You're better off having been born after, say, 1965, if you really want to enjoy this corny romantic comedy and its abundant references to the MTV culture of the mid-1980s--and even then the odds are only 50-50 that you'll have a shamelessly good time. But a lot of people beat those odds, because <I>The Wedding Singer</I> was a surprise box-office hit when released in early 1998, and it resulted in <I>Saturday Night Live</I> graduate Adam Sandler's salary going ridiculously sky-high. It's a schizophrenic film about a seemingly schizophrenic wedding singer (Sandler) who's charmingly sweet to some people but a tongue-lashing maniac to others, probably out of frustration over his fading ambition as a wannabe rock star (not to mention Sandler's penchant for loud-mouthed lunacy). When he meets an admiring young waitress (delightfully played by Drew Barrymore), it's love at first sight, complicated by their pending marriages to <I>much</I> less appealing fiancés. The plot then contorts itself to accommodate this contrived will-they-or-won't-they? scenario, so you're better off ignoring the love story and focusing on the comedy, which is sporadic but occasionally hilarious. This is also a lighter, friendlier Sandler than moviegoers had seen before, which probably accounts for the movie's success. Toss in a fine supporting cast--including a show-stopping drunk act by indie-movie stalwart Steve Buscemi--and you've got the ingredients for a no-brainer that's ultimately more fun than it is annoying. --Jeff Shannon

1 out of 5 stars Never received.......2007-05-25

It was funny how when I went through an independent seller I got my other items at the address I have on file and yet when I went through Amazon I never received this item along with all of what I ordered.

5 out of 5 stars A romantic comedy!.......2007-04-26

Adam Sandler at his best, matched up with Drew Barrymore, this dynamic duo makes you want to laugh, cry, and fall in love. The frosting on this wedding cake is when you flash back to the 80's with a great soundtrack of hits from all your favorites.
The movie takes you back to all fads such as Michael Jackson's white glove, Miami Vice, Billy Idol, Alabama Slammers, all-temper-Cheer, and hairdo's that wil make you laugh.

The story is simple--boy meets girl, girl meets boy ...they fall in love.
Only problem is: the girl, Julia, is going to get married to someone, Glenn the rich boyfriend, who she doesn't love.
The wedding singer, Robbie, gets dumped at his own wedding, and helps Julia plan her wedding; thats when they fall in love.

This is a fun movie with lots of passion from the actors, and leaves you smiling in the end.

4 out of 5 stars Sandler Sings For His Supper.......2007-03-14

Adam Sandler's film career has had its ups and downs. From the easily forgotten "Billy Madison" to the well-intentioned but slightly miscued "Click," Sandler has played both straight man and buffoon to varying degrees of success. In "The Wedding Singer," Sandler manages to harness his inner goofball and pulls off a wonderful performance in what is probably his best film to date.

Sandler plays Robbie Hart, an aspiring songwriter who plays weddings for extra cash until his career takes off. He's nice to old ladies, lives in his sister's basement, and is the best wedding singer money can buy. At the opening of the film, Robbie and his bandmates are setting the dancefloor aflame with the 80's classic, "You Spin Me Round" (originally by Dead or Alive). While at this wedding reception, Robbie runs into Julia (played to sweet perfection by Drew Barrymore), a soon-to-be married server with the catering service at the reception. The two hit it off instantly and become good friends. Julia even works at Robbie's wedding and witnesses his being left at the altar by his would-be wife, Linda.

Robbie falls into a funk, refusing to play any and every wedding reception he's offered, including Julia's. He eventually agrees to help her set up her wedding with her Don Johnson wannabe fiance, Glenn (Matthew Glave). As any good romantic comedy would have happen, Robbie and Julia begin to fall for each other and their respective fiances are proven to be no good and undeserving of their love. Even though, neither Robbie nor Julia can openly reveal their love for one another to anybody. In the end, everything is tied nicely together by a ballad sung by Robbie, and everyone goes home happy.

The cast in this film is wonderful. Christine Taylor plays Holly, Julia's loose cousin. Frank Sivero is hilarious in a brief role as Robbie's brother-in-law. Steve Buscemi and Jon Lovitz also have bit roles but make the most of them. Sandler's buddy, Allen Covert, plays his best friend, Sammy, a limo driver who wants to be like the Fonz. Alexis Arquette is George, a Boy George lookalike. Also look for Kevin Nealon as a banker who interviews Robbie.

Of course, the one thing most people seem to focus on in this film is the music and fashion of the 80's. Pop culture abounds in this film with references to Van Halen's breakup, Burt Reynolds and Loni Anderson's "strong" marriage, J.R. getting shot on "Dallas," Freddy Krueger, all temperCheer, and the Dunkin' Donuts guy. The musical lineup includes songs by Journey, Flock of Seagulls, Culture Club, David Bowie, and Huey Lewis and the News among others. Heck, Billy Idol even has a scene-stealing cameo on a flight to Las Vegas.

Obviously, if you grew up in the 80's, you're going to catch onto most of the pop culture references in the film. However, you need not know them in order to enjoy this film. It's a hilarious romantic comedy that showcases the talents of Sandler and Barrymore, and I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars If you love 80's music..........2007-02-12

You will like this movie. It is set in 1985, and Robbie Hart is a wedding singer who lives in his sister's basement and is set to get married to an unsatisfied fiance (played by Angela Featherstone, the famous Xerox girl from Friends). Everything comes tumbling around him when she announces they aren't meant to be because she deserves more than a low-paid wedding singer, and he sets on a mission to improve himself so that one day a girl would actually want to marry him.

Drew Barrymore is the sweet catering hall waitress who is engaged to a cocky Miami Vice-loving two timer. They become great friends during the course of this very funny movie, filled with great 80's references and terrific music. I won't tell you how it ends (though i'm sure you can guess) but it's a great movie.

Click is a high-concept, low-brow variation on It's a Wonderful Life that will have Adam Sandler fans laughing even as it leaves Frank Capra spinning in his grave. In their third collaboration (after The Wedding Singer and The Waterboy, Sandler and director Frank Coraci aim at the lowest common denominator and consistently hit their target, from scary casting (David Hasselhoff as Sandler's shallow, sexist boss; Sean Astin in a tight red Speedo) to a rancid menu of fart jokes, fat jokes, oversexed dogs, and other attempts at humor that rarely rise above the level of grade-school pranks. Sandler's "family comes first" sentiment somehow manages to survive the onslaught of rude, crude attitude that Sandler brings to his role as Michael Newman, a workaholic architect who learns the hard way that, well, family comes first. This happens after Newman gets a magical remote control from Morty (Christopher Walken, the film's one and only highlight), an eccentric oddball in the "Beyond" section of a Bed, Bath & Beyond store who's a devilish version of Wonderful Life's benevolent guardian angel. But Sandler's no James Stewart as he uses his techno-marvel (complete with a DVD-like "life menu") to fast-forward through his life's most unpleasant moments, only to realize that he's been missing lots of good stuff, too. With Kate Beckinsale as Newman's neglected wife, impressive older-age make-ups by Rick Baker and a lot of digital wizardry to beef up the humor, Click won't disappoint Sandler's established fan base, and its $40 million opening weekend offered ample proof that Sandler's box-office clout remains remarkably consistent.--Jeff Shannon

Product Description

A harried workaholic, Michael Newman (Adam Sandler) doesn't have time for his wife (Kate Beckinsale) and children, not if he's to impress his ungrateful boss and earn a well-deserved promotion. So when he meets Morty (Christopher Walken), a loopy sales clerk, he gets the answer to his prayers: a magical remote that allows him to bypass life's little distractions with increasingly hysterical results. But as Michael gleefully mutes, skips and scans past his family and his friends, the remote gradually takes over his life and begins to program him, in this fast, funny and out-of-control comedy adventure.

2 out of 5 stars Rent it instead.......2007-06-23

This movie started out well enough but turned to multiple crude jokes that got tiresome really quickly. Having dogs humping a stuffed duck and even Sandler once (in shadow)during sex with his wife, definitely does not make this family movie material. As everyone has mentioned, Click does in the end, mirror the message from It's A Wonderful Life -- and for that reason, it is worth a rental. Watch it with your favorite workaholic who is missing out on family.

The casting was great. Julie Kavner and Henry Winkler were perfect as the parents and the make up department did a great job of making them appear younger and older. David Hasselhoff and Sandler's crew of regulars were totally funny in their parts but as much as I love Adam Sandler, Click was disappointing. If it had a stronger script, it would have worked.

5 out of 5 stars Humor and a lot of heart.......2007-06-10

Sandler continues to select comendies that almost always leaves the audience with something to think about. This movie is probably best described as a modern version of it's a wonderful life and it's message is just a poignant as Jimmy Stewart pleading that he "wants to live". Many can relate to living on auto-pilot, wanting to fast-forward through struggles and fights, but it often those things which build character. A good movie with a great message. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars A Thinker.......2007-06-03

Michael is an architect, married to a great gal and they have 2 adorable children. There is one problem however, Michael never has time for his wife, children or parents. He is desperately trying to move ahead in his job, for their good, or is it? One day he goes to the store to buy a univeral remote and meets Morty who gives him one that will change his life. This remote Michael soon learns is to be used on his life. Don't like something that is hapening, fast forward. don't want to hear someone? Put it on mute! Wow....this should be great, or is it? Soon Michael is at the end of his life and perhaps from the use of the remote Michael realizes what is important and what is not.
I really liked this movie because it brought out so many things we all share in life. The responsibility to give our family all that we feel they need and yet showing perhaps it isn't what they need after all. It's very funny at times, yet sobering and the ending had me in tears, but that was a good thing. I really believe you will enjoy this movie and it will leave you perhaps a little wiser.

With generous amounts of good luck and good timing, <I>50 First Dates</I> set an all-time box-office record for the opening weekend of a romantic comedy; whether it deserved such a bonanza is another issue altogether. It's a sweet-natured vehicle for sweet-natured stars Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore, and their track record with <I>The Wedding Singer</I> no doubt factors in its lowbrow appeal. But while the well-matched lovebirds wrestle with a gimmicky plot (she has no short-term memory, so he has to treat every encounter as their first), director Peter Segal (who directed Sandler in <I>Anger Management</I>) ignores the intriguing potential of their predicament (think <I>Memento</I> meets <I>Groundhog Day</I>) and peppers the proceedings with the kind of juvenile humor that Sandler fans have come to expect. The movie sneaks in a few heartfelt moments amidst its inviting Hawaiian locations, and that trained walrus is charmingly impressive, but you can't quite shake the feeling that too many good opportunities were squandered in favor of easy laughs. Like Barrymore's character, you might find yourself forgetting this movie shortly after you've seen it. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars Falling in love for the first time, everyday, for the rest of your life and maybe even crying... .......2007-06-09

After "The Wedding Singer" the Sandler-Barrymore duo do it again with their wonderful on-screen chemistry and an adorable story. The movie also makes you think philosophically. Actually many people in life whose actions are still very mechanical and robot like, live a life as Drew does in this movie. However unlike Drew there are none to tell these people what's wrong with their lives. However it is also tragic to think that one day she has to wake up somewhere in her 60's and realise that her father died and then relive that everyday. The same feeling would multiply if more of her loved ones were to die before her. The other thing to imagine is that someone ought to ensure her daily treatment continued till she died.

Then there are those unforgettable numbers from the 80's, particularly "Lovesong" and "Friday I'am in love" by the amazing, The Cure, "Drive" by The Cars, "Hold me now" from the Thomson Twins, The Police's "Every breath You take" and Spandau Ballet's "True" which was also featured in "The Wedding Singer". Most of these numbers this time are played as cover songs by newer artistes making the soundtrack to this movie another big seller. "Could you be loved" the original by Bob Marley is retained though. And like "The Wedding Singer" there's that adorable song from Adam Sandler as well.

Hawaii is pictured so beautifully that the movie literally promotes tourism for this lovely island.

Several other characters also deserve praise. Henry's Hawaiian Friend, Lucy's brother (played by the guy who plays Frodo's friend in "Lord of the Ring",series), the Chef at the restaurant, the owner of the restaurant, the Drew's father and Henry's assistant at the zoo.

A movie that can make you laugh as much as it can bring a tear to your eyes, see it if you haven't seen it yet.

4 out of 5 stars Very cute and worth the purchase price.......2007-05-29

I have not been disappointed in the duo Sandler/Barrymore so far, their movies have been rather good, they have the chemistry. This is one of those cute movies that gets you to laugh from time to time and even think about how your life can be different. Sometimes you wonder if these two characters would really get together in real life, but then realize it's just a movie that you can watch for the entertainment of it. It's in my collection and I think you will want it in yours as well after you watch it.

5 out of 5 stars Equal Parts Romantic and Comedy.......2007-04-15

Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore give memorable performances in this very funny romantic comedy. Don't worry guys this isn't a total chick flick just kinda. This movie was shot in the very beautiful state of Hawaii. Of course the Sandman makes this movie very worth buying.

5 out of 5 stars Adorable Movie........2007-04-09

I love this movie. It's just so cute and I love to see Adam Sandler and Drew Barrymore paired together. They just have such great chemistry

4 out of 5 stars 50 First Dates.......2007-01-19

I purchased numerous copies of this movie for my friends on the mainland who haven't yet come to visit. This movie was filmed on the Windward side of Oahu where I live. The movie shows the true feel of lif
e in what the locals call "country". Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler were both excellent in their characters, but Rob Schneider as Ula was perfect. He obviously has spent some time with local Hawaiians, we all said right-on and laughed out loud. People who think there is nothing to see on Oahu should definitely see this movie.

This is one of the funniest movies I have ever seen. Unfortunatly, this is an extremely weak special edition! All the extras include are a outtake reel, deleted scenes, and production notes. They should also have put on a commentary, theatrical trailer, behind-the-scenes or retrospective featurette, and probably some other things. But they shouldn't say 'special edition", they should say remasterd version, or something else instead. But unfortunatley, this was a dissapointment to fans of adam sandler along with Bill Madison, but at least it just passed over "barebones". Be grateful for that!Movie:B+ Extras:C-

Gilmore can't skate in the ice rink very well which is what always stops him from becoming a professional hockey player. A golf talent notices how far Gilmore can hit a golf ball and gets Gilmore involved in golf. There are some funny scenes in this movie. Some of the humor though is dirty or just not funny.

Basically in this movie, Adam Sandler acts like he does in all of following movies like Big Daddy and Mr. Deeds - a guy who is tough, but nice on the inside and always falls in love with a woman. However, as the years go on, Adam Sandler has polished himself and his character has geniunly become more likable with each movie.

Product Description

America's favorite wild and zany funnyman, Adam Sandler (50 FIRST DATES, MR. DEEDS, PUNCH-DRUNK LOVE), scores big laughs in a smash comedy hit where the laughs never run dry! Just an oddball mama's boy from the back bayous of Louisiana, Bobby Boucher (Sandler) never wanted anything more than to quench the thirst of the dehydrated athletes who treat him like dirt! But when Coach Klein (Henry Winkler -- HOLES, TV's HAPPY DAYS) makes the call that allows Bobby to finally stand up for himself, it unleashes a torrent of bottled-up frustration ... and exposes a talent for tackling that transforms him from a meek "water distribution engineer" into the hardest hitter ever to roam the gridiron! Also featuring award-winning Kathy Bates (ABOUT SCHMIDT, TITANIC, MISERY) and sexy Fairuza Balk (ALMOST FAMOUS, RETURN TO OZ) in a hilarious cast of stars -- here's your chance to join the millions everywhere who've proudly stood and cheered for The Waterboy! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Amazon.com

Adam Sandler vaulted into the $20-million-salary stratosphere with this, his second $100-million hit in 1998--a movie that further shows just how deeply embedded he is in the Jerry Lewis tradition of idiot comedy. He plays Bobby Boucher, a backwoods Cajun and a mentally challenged individual with a fixation on water: specifically, on serving the coolest, most refreshing H2O available to the college football team he has served since he was an adolescent. But when he's fired from his position, he takes up a similar job with a lowlier college team coached by neurotic Henry Winkler. One day at practice, Bobby loses his temper and delivers a bone-shaking tackle to the starting quarterback; before he can say, "blackened crawdads," he's the star of the team and leading it to a bowl game. But it's all against the wishes of his overprotective mother (Kathy Bates), who wants to keep her Bobby to herself--and that includes keeping him away from the floozy girlfriend (Fairuza Balk) who's sweet on him. There are two kinds of people in this world: People who find Sandler funny and people who view him as a neon-lit symbol of the decline of popular taste. You know who you are and, based on that, you can decide whether this is a movie for you. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

4 out of 5 stars ONE OF SANDLERS BEST EXCELLENT CAST.......2007-03-27

I saw this film in theaters and thought it was OK. After waching it on DVD a few times over the years it has really grown on me. Henry Winkler, Jimmy Reed and Kathy Bates are hystrical. A classic sports comedy that blows away his lame remake of the Longest Yard!

5 out of 5 stars A great girft.......2007-01-03

I ordered 2 of the Waterboy DVDs...one for a gift and one to keep. As always, we love the movie!

5 out of 5 stars Boy, Are You Playin' the Foozeball?.......2006-11-16

I am not a big Adam Sandler fan. I find most of his movies to be a little bit on the boring side but for some bizarre reason, I absolutely love this movie. Maybe because it's just bizarre.

Adam Sandler plays Bobby Boucher (pronounced Bo-shay). He's not exactly the sharpest knife in the drawer, he's in his thirties, he's a momma's boy, and he makes his career as being a professional water boy. Water is his life. Sandler created a very interesting character in Bobby Boucher.

He goes to work for the Louisiana Mud Dogs where the Coach, played by Henry Winkler discovers a "hidden talent" in Bobby. When Bobby gets angry, he has the strength of twenty men so the coach makes Bobby a defensive tackler with the Bobby's condition that nobody tell his momma.

In college Bobby learns that alligators are aggressive not because they "have all these teeth and no toothbrush" but because of the way their medulla oblongata is geared. He learns to have friends' outside of his momma. In other words, Bobby is growing up which is his momma's biggest fear because she is afraid that once he grows up, he won't need her, any more.

It's actually a very sweet movie. What I really liked about this movie were the visualization scenes. The Coach has Bobby visualize his opposition as people who have made him angry in the past. There is this one scene where he sees the whole offensive line with Henry Winklers head on their shoulders singing, "Water sucks...it really, really sucks..."

You have to see it...it's hysterical.

For the most part I review spiritual/metaphysical/philosophical books and movies, but I love films like this even though they may appear to have no "redeemable" aspects. Which is not true. I can find meaning and depth in everything. I'm not saying that The waterboy is a major philosophical triumph, but it does have meaning and depth even though it's primarily silly and highly bizarre...which is also good!

I love this movie and even though I do not own this DVD, I do watch it every time it's on television. It does generate some hardy laughs and I appreciate it just for that!

Peace & Blessings.

5 out of 5 stars Forrest Gump with passive aggression.......2006-08-27

Waterboy is the story of a poor man's Forrest Gump who owes his dim-witted persona to the overprotective nature of his mother. Adam Sandler is at his silly, "stupid comedy" best playing Bobby Boucher, a Cajun recluse who has been a waterboy for one football team or another his entire life. After losing his job, he eventually catches on with another team where his life changes dramatically.

One day while perorming his waterboy duties, something he takes to ridiculously hilarious extremes, Bobby is abused by his new team. His precious water gets spit in, he gets tackled, and everyone of the players makes fun of him. With his old team, he had to endure the pain and ridicule without retaliation, but not with the new team.

A star is born.

Bobby eventually joins the team where he immediately, albeit inexplicably, becomes the starting linebacker. Despite his lack of football knowledge, he ends up becoming one of the greatest forces in college football history. He destroys everyone and everything on the opposing team, with highlight after highlight, using visualizations of all who have wronged him in the past to fuel his aggression.

Waterboy is highly enjoyable, with classic Sandler, and tons of either comedy or action to satisfy all needs. Henry Winkler is great in his role, bringing laughs whenever he's on-screen. Kathy Bates is great as the near-psychotic mother, a Col. Sanders lookalike who brings about easy comedy, and the cameos of Rob Schnieder and Clint Howard are subtle comedic genius.

I must warn all potential viewers. You may find yourself quoting several portions of the movie when finished, and quotes are FOR THE DEVIL!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2006-08-06

This movie is top-notch hilarity, this is a must-own for Sandler fans or slapstick comedy fans. This movie is a classic in many ways and has a lot of firsts for later Sandler movies(like Rob Schnieder). A great movie, has almost non-stop laughs, I recommend it!

If you loved them on "Saturday Night Live" you will find this movie to be very entertaining. Although the sets look straight out of the 80's you can't help but love their interesting way of adapting to life on earth; and, chris farley is a hoot too.

5 out of 5 stars A peek into American Life.......2006-11-07

I could watch this movie over and over. The verbage is a scream, their acclimation to American culture is certainly eye-opening, and David Spade is just so smarmy. Not just for SNL fans, but more understandable if you remember the old Conehead bits from the show. Good stuff, with surprising cameos.

4 out of 5 stars Saturday Night Live comes to life!.......2006-11-03

Some of my favorite actors portray their best SNL characters in this movie. It has been a long-time hit in my family and I was just dying to finally own it because its never run on television anymore. It was a blast to see this again now that I am in my late 20's and able to understand some of the humor that I never got as a child. I recommend this to anyone young or old.

Gosh--kids. You gotta love 'em, right? Well, not necessarily-- particularly if you're Adam Sandler. But <I>Big Daddy</I> is about paternal devotion in its own oblique way. Sandler plays Sonny Koufax, a law-school grad who has been milking an accident settlement to cover his living expenses, while he continues to slack his way through life. But when his girlfriend threatens to dump him, he decides to show her he's serious about their relationship and pretends to adopt a little boy (in fact, his roommate's son from a one-night stand several years earlier, who shows up on their doorstep just after the roommate leaves town on a job). But after taking care of the tyke for a couple of days, Sonny finds that it's a little like feeding that stray dog that followed you home: Before you know it, you've grown attached to the little fella--and then what are you going to do? By turns crude and maudlin, <I>Big Daddy</I> has its share of laughs and will certainly entertain fans who like Adam Sandler best when he plays the case of arrested development with a smart-aleck retort for everything. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A nice comedy.......2006-10-19

If there is one thing that Adam Sandler does well, that's comedy, and Big Daddy is just that: a good comedy.
The movie brings to the screen the story of a good-hearted though rather lazy and immature young man who in an effort to save his relationship attempts to impress his girlfriend by adopting a five-year-old boy!
Adam Sandler, Rob Schneider, and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.
The setting, the plot, and the dialogues are all good, though what was the point of incorporating a homosexual couple into this movie? It came out of the blue and served no purpose whatsoever, except to taint the overall mood.
In a nutshell, it's probably not a movie you would want to add to your collection, but it will surely provide for an evening's entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars Big Daddy is Big Hit........2006-08-06

Big Daddy is about a guy named Sonny (Adam Sandler) who adopts a 5 year old kid (Julian) under the name of his room-mate, Kevin Garrety (Jon Stewart) to impress his girlfriend Vanessa (Kristy Swanson). He finds out his girlfriend is dating an older guy and Sonny is dumped and left with the kid. Sonny decides he can take care of him until Social Services can find an foster home for him, but Sonny falls in love with the kid and avoids Social Services. Then Social Services finds out Sonny was using Kevin's name and they take the kid away. Sonny tries to fight for him, but unable to get him and custody goes to the real Kevin who is in China for most of the movie. Juilan wants Sonny to be his dad, but Sonny says he can't, but he can always be his friend. So the movie ends at a happy note.
During the movie you'll have some laughs, giiggles and some tear jerking scenes. The funniest part of the movie is the court room scene, with Nazo, Mr. Hurley and the Bum. I almost cried when Social Services takes Julien away.
Overall great story-line. By far the best comedy and great story to a movie.

Anyone familiar with writer/director James L. Brooks (<I>Broadcast News</I>, <I>As Good As It Gets</I>) knows the man has a real feel for interesting women and a disarming way with a one-liner. The main women in <I>Spanglish</I> are Deborah Clasky (Téa Leoni), a moneyed SoCal mom, and non-English speaking Flor Moreno (Paz Vega), the beautiful Latina whom Deborah hires as a housekeeper. The one-liners, some of them amusing, are everywhere. Brooks provides an intriguing set-up for the two women to butt heads--Deborah's pudgy daughter Bernice (Sarah Steele) needs the affection at which Flor excels, while Flor's clever, bi-lingual daughter Cristina (Shelbie Bruce) is enamored of the financial advantages Deborah can provide--then proceeds to make Deborah so hatefully ignorant you can't imagine why her neuroses are the main thrust of the film. And Deborah's celebrated chef husband John (Adam Sandler, way over his head) is such a perfect parent he doesn't seem human--what happened to the Brooks who had <I>Terms of Endearment</I> mom Debra Winger turn to her scowling little boy and grunt "Don't make me hit you in the street"? Cloris Leachman has a nifty supporting role as Deborah's boozy, ex-jazz singer mother, but it's only one offbeat chord in an earnest film that hits all the wrong notes. <I>--Steve Wiecking</I>

Description

John Clasky (Adam Sandler) is a devoted dad whose skills as a chef have afforded his family (T=E9a Leoni, Cloris Leachman) a very upscale life, including a summer home in Malibu and a breathtaking new housekeeper, Flor (Paz Vega), who has recently immigrated to L.A. from Mexico, and is trying to find a better life for her remarkable daughter, Cristina (Shelbie Bruce), who is rapidly embracing the American way of life. When Flor and Cristina move in with the Claskys for the summer, Flor has to fight for her daughter's soul as she discovers that life in a new country is perilous...especially when you're being embraced by an affluent, eccentric American family.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty bad.......2007-05-16

I purchased this on someone's advice - to see Cloris Leachman. Turns out she had a very small part. This is a movie strictly for Adam Sandler's diehard fans. Even he's not at his best here. The writing was one cliche after another. Bored, I found myself wondering how much exercise Tea Leoni has to do to get that body.

4 out of 5 stars sandler gets serious.......2007-01-25

Adam Sandler in a serious role? Yes, after a fashion. As the most famous chef in America, husband, and father, he plays John Clasky, and is married to Deborah, a suburban housewife who raises the bar for what it means to be a type-A control freak. When we meet her mother Evelyn we understand why. This Los Angeles family is very wealthy and profoundly dysfunctional. Enter Flor, a Mexican housekeeper who has a teenage daughter Cristina who is the same age as the Clasky's daughter Bernice. Since her mom does not speak English, Cristina narrates the film for us. You can imagine the sub-plots of this "blended" family, but in the end Flor is a source of humanity, warmth, and normalcy for everyone.

1 out of 5 stars I'll never forgive my girlfriend..........2007-01-24

...for dragging me to this estrogen-drowned disaster of a movie. Truly, this is one of the top three worst films I've ever seen. I am convinced that Adam Sandler must have been blackmailed somehow for him to appear in this dreck.

Begin with the oh-so-heartwrenching story of a single mother forced to flee her native land in search of a better future for her daughter. Of course, the daughter will end up attending Princeton and her entrance essay is the premise of the storytelling in this movie. Shaking your head in bewilderment? It gets worse.

The dysfunctional family that the mother finds work with is possessed of a shrew of a father (the soft, unimposing and backbone-free Sandler) who is dominated by his overacting, speed freak-like, obsessive wife (Leoni), and round it out with a live-in, late-stage alcoholic mother-in-law (who of course, acts as a moral compass thanks to the wisdom gained by decades of squandering her life in a booze-soaked haze. Please!) and a few damaged, utterly unbelievable caricatures of kids. Viola, enough ammo for "drama" to make any menopausal woman salivate in anticipation of the impending deluge of emotional excess that comes with such movies.

The problem is, there is not one scene in the movie where the characters earn your empathy. If there was ever a point where the viewer was meant to wonder what was going to happen next, or what course of action a character might take, I missed it. I believe it would be impossible to find a point in the movie that was not spelled out and spoon-fed to the viewer in the most plain and predictable terms.

Another problem I have with this picture is the off-target promotion it received. It is not a comedy. I don't know what it is in terms of genre. Suicide-accelerant maybe? Since there are so many who love this movie, I'm sure that my review won't stop you if you want to see it. However, if your wife/girlfriend suggests you watch this movie, I urge you to spare yourself the agony you are sure to endure if you sit through this one. Amazon should implement an option for rating zero stars, just for movies such as this.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie...but.......2007-01-23

..I don't understand all the comments about how the husband is "too perfect to be believable". He's not perfect, he's weak. He allows himself to be walked over, and is so anxious to keep the peace that he does not defend his daughter or the employees. This type of weakness is a serious flaw, in my opinion, because it causes others to believe that he is giving tacit approval; he's more scared of his wife than protective of his daugher. I still like the husband, but I guess I am commenting on the other reviewer's comments, which I frankly don't understand. I had no idea that Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni were such good actors. Thumbs up for an absorbing movie!

We loved the movie. It was on old Friday night of fun with the kids.

3 out of 5 stars Video Quality Review (Blu-ray).......2007-02-01

I may have rated this Blu-ray disc higher if it weren't for the downloadable trailer available through the PS3. The trailer is perfect high definition, a reason to spend too much money on a good TV. The colors are as bright and fresh as the image is detailed. The closest I have yet seen to the 'looking through a window' effect. Stunning, absolutely stunning. So what a shock when I started watching the Blu-ray disc. Don't get me wrong, it's good, very good, but not anywhere in the same league as the trailer. I then watched a clip from the trailer and found the matching clip in the film; night and day. The film has a slight haze of grain jumping pixels throughout, the trailer has none. Colors are subdued, no, the colors are burnt and crushed in this film when compared to the trailer. The whole movie was shot digitally so what happened. If you like Click the Blu-ray disc is going to be better than the DVD, even the special features are in high definition. But after seeing the trailer it's clear that someone dropped the ball in encoding this transfer.

5 out of 5 stars "Family Comes First".......2007-01-31

A very pleasant surprise, Click, is a movie that brings to the screen the story of a married man and father of two who is given the opportunity to skip all the unpleasant situations in his life, only to come to the realization that the phrase "Careful what you wish for" is meant to mean something...
The plot has elements of both comedy and drama making it rather difficult to label it as one or the other; it's actually a bit of both.
There are the slightest hints of The Family Man starring Nicolas Cage.
It is a film about human relations, hope and second chances, but most importantly about trust, love, and inner strength.
Adam Sandler, Kate Beckinsale, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few laughs, not to mention a few tears.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, the humor, and the music are all wonderful!
In short, Click is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection! 4 1/2 Stars

4 out of 5 stars Fun Movie but the blu-ray is not better than dvd.......2006-12-27

This is one of the worest Blu-ray disks. The picture is is terrible!

4 out of 5 stars I "Clicked" With Click.......2006-10-10

I'm not really big on Adam Sandler movies. I thoroughly enjoyed, the Waterboy, however, and even though I have yet to buy that movie on DVD, I watch it every time they show it on television.

So, I'm sitting through this movie and the first thing I find hard to believe is that the Adam Sandler Character landed a babe like Kate Beckinsale. But of course, this movie is a "Fantasy" and so I guess anything is possible.

Michael (the Adam Sandler character) meets Mort (played by the always delightfully weird, Christopher Walken)in the "Beyond" section of Bed, Bath, and Beyond and receives a universal remote free of charge because it is not yet on the market. Well, this universal remote not only controls Michael's television it also controls his universe.

I can't exactly say when the movie actually "clicked" with me because at first, it just seemed kind of cheesy. Maybe it's because those scenes just primarly had Sandler in them. To me, Sandler needs a strong supporting cast because I really don't think he holds up on his own...but then again, do any of us...we all really need each other...

The basic message of this film is that Life is a process; that things that we normally find tedious, and dull, and difficult to go through are all part of Life. We would all love to just "fast forward" to the good parts, but maybe every part of life - including the dull and tedious parts - are good. Be sure to bring some Kleenex because even though I didn't "bawl" I did tear up a bit which is crazy in the first place...I mean, it's an Adam Sandler movie...who knew?

I was having a discussion with my friend who had also seen the movie and he felt that I was "reading" too deeply into things and maybe it was just a movie. Maybe it didn't have any other meaning other than to simply "entertain". Okay, I'll buy that. For the average movie goer who just wants to be entertained, it is definetely entertaining, but if you are like me and want to be entertained as well as reminded of certain basic truths about life than this movie will definetely remind you of those truths that we often forget ( or misplace) during our own process called life.

Besides, after all is said and done, Kate Beckinsale is in this movie for godssakes so you have to see it!!!

Have a great life, people...

Has his karma come around to kick him in the butt or what? Actually, Lucy has short-term memory loss so every night all memory of her day is erased. 4 out of 5 stars Entertaining.......2007-02-28

I like this movie - I found it amusing and entertaining. It's a unique story. The story does depict real life and its meant for entertainment so its not necessarily focused on being realistic. I would watch this one again and don't have a problem paying regular price for it.

5 out of 5 stars 50 first Dates Blu-ray.......2007-02-08

I was going to purchase this movie on standard DVD until I bought my PS3. I've seen the movie previously on DVD but after watching it on Blu-ray I am glad I waited to purchase it. The picture quality is so much better than DVD and the sound is so clear. I have fallen in love with Blu-ray since I bought this movie and I plan to buy Blu-ray from now on.

4 out of 5 stars A Decent Blu-Ray Release...........2006-12-14

Story Synopsis:
Dr. Henry Roth (Sandler) is living a dream life in paradise. Afraid of commitment, he lives his life happily enjoying a constant stream of one-night stands with just about any tourist who comes to town. But when he falls for local girl Lucy Whitmore (Barrymore), he learns that Lucy has short-term memory loss and doesn't remember him each time they meet, and he has to come up with new ways to woo her as he takes her on 50 First Dates.

Disc Picture:
The 2.40:1 Blu-ray Disc picture exhibits bright, well-rendered colors, deep blacks, and accurate skintones. Some outdoor night shots look very good indeed, with great detail in the blacks to help give the picture a three-dimensional feel. Some scenes, however, look slightly washed out with blacks that are more a charcoal gray. Close-ups can be very detailed, although the detail isn't as sharp as some of the best high-definition presentations. Source element artifacts do show up from time to time, and the images can be a bit noisy with heavy film grain as well. The picture quality is quite good for the most part, but sometimes a bit hit-or-miss.

Soundtrack:
The improved fidelity provided by the uncompressed PCM 5.1-channel encoded soundtrack is welcome, but the mix is still a bit uneventfull. Surround envelopment is limited and the front stage imaging is not very wide or deep.

5 out of 5 stars Surprising depth of conciseness.......2006-06-24

The island is Hawaii, a temporary paradise for many women; the man on the island is Henry Roth (Adam Sandler) also a temporary paradise. Unwilling to commit to anyone or thing but his boat.

Then he meets Lucy Whitmore (Drew Barrymore). After an accident she has lost her ability to transfer short term memory to log term. So every day since the accident is erased and she starts over. So the relationship starts from an bet and ends up who knows where if any where.

At first it the film looks just like any old Adam Sandler film that only Sandlerights could like. Then it settles down to cute. Then it settles down to meaningful, finally you forget that you are watching a movie and then it is over. Drew excels in this movie and is very believable.

The film would have come off a lot better with out all the Sandleright left over characters that contributed zip to the story. The two that came to mind is the brother Doug Whitmore (Sean Astin). And the what-not Alexa (Lusia Strus.)

Another warning is that the version of DVD had a bunch of coming attractions after paying good money I do not need forced attractions at the beginning. Wait for a better release or just press the "Menu" button to escape them.

5 out of 5 stars How to review a DVD before you've seen it :).......2006-06-23

Amazing, boggles my mind how you can review a blu-ray DVD version of a movie before you've even bought your player OR DVD! We don't need an Adam/ Drew naysayer, what we need is an objective evaluation of the blu-ray transfer. I for one can't wait to get my hands on this to review. I have no stars to award other than to balance the 1 star "gee I haven't seen the blu-ray but I'm rating" evaluator.
