4 out of 5 stars Glad to see another release from the Filamation Library.......2007-06-24

When I found out that Warner Home Video was releasing this and the 66 Superman cartoons on DVD, I was ecstatic but I was disappointed that they are releasing the the 77 series before the 1968 or 69 series. That series was more superior and it had more action. Don't get me wrong, I liked this cartoon but I believe the only reason, as it has been stated in the other reviews here, this series is being released is because that Adam West and Burt Ward are doing the voices and this will sell because of that fact since the live action series has yet to released on DVD.

This series had no action(it was toned down due to the restrictions of the time period)and most of the stories stunk(though the Bat-Message segments at the end of each episode were enlighting.......RIIIIGHT). The saving grace for this series (if there was any) was Lou Scheimer's voice over as Bat-Mite. I thought that it was hilarious and it was the reason I tuned in each week just to see what he was going to do next. I give kudos to Lennie Weinrib for making an effort to do the the voices of The Joker and Commisioner Gordon but they sounded too much alike.

I will buy this to be a part of my Batman collection as I will the Superman DVD but I will be happier when Warner Home Video releases the other Batman Filmation series,Aquaman and the Superboy cartoons.

Oh yeah,I will be even happier when they release the 66 Batman live action series,The Green Hornet TV Series and the Tarzan, Lord of The Jungle Filmation series.

1 out of 5 stars I'm only rating the packaging.......2007-06-22

While I do remember watching this cartoon in the '70s and even then finding it inferior to the way-cool '60s Filmation cartoon, I'm not rating the set, but rather the HORRIBLE, HORRIBLE PACKAGING. There is absolutely no excuse for Warner to allow the kind of shoddy, poorly drawn artwork that adorns so many of their animation sets. This artwork and design look like something that would adorn an unauthorized bootleg. While some may think this is nitpicking, it's honestly kept me from pre-ordering it. There are some of us who consider this kind of stuff important.

5 out of 5 stars Batfan in Heaven.......2007-06-21

I strongly remember watching The New Adventures of Batman a lifetime ago. I've been looking forward to getting this DVD ever since I found out it was due for release. I've been wondering if it can live up to my memory of it, or wither I would feel let down by it. Adam West was my childhood hero in the live action Batman TV series, but even back when I first seen this, I was too young to realise it was the same actor playing the part. Too young, or not old enough not to care, I was just wrapped up in the adventure of it all.

After not long watching some of the episodes, I was surprised that it has lived up to my memory of it. Oh, it's vastly inferior to 90's version in every way, Batmite is still irritating, but it has charm, strong nostalgia value, and the great Adam West!

Even though I'm still working my way through the episodes on these discs, I'm looking forward to some of the episodes that I can still remember after all these years. This 36 year old batfan is in heaven.

Now I'll come to the packaging. It sucks! I'd like to shake whichever muppet at Warner Bros who signed off on this packaging warmly by the neck! The cover artwork is poor and doesn't especially represent the cartoons and I hate digipacks. Why couldn't it just of come in the study standard plastic DVD packaging like the new `The Batman' series? Instead it's all cardboard. Once it's damaged, it stays damaged, unlike a standard DVD case which you would just swap. We're paying for this, so stop going cheap on us!

I will Buy the Superman cartoons coming out on DVD. but i will only rent the "New Adventures of Batman" as in 77, when it first came out, i only thought it slightly better than Super Friends, which had horrible execution. The Art in the 1966 Batman cartoons was not the best, but it hit home. The colors were brilliant, the music unforgettable and the plots short sighted enough to hold my young interest. I respect Lou and the people at Filmation, their commentaries are great and and they really seem to be moving at breakneck speed to put out their catalogue. Star Trek Animated, Groovy Ghoulies, Jason of Star Command, Ect.I even think i saw a box set of Sabrina the Teenaged Witch somewhere, but really, when the ENTIRE series of Spiderman '67 cartoons has been out for a year, its time to release "The Adventures of Batman, with Robin, boy wonder. Batman and Robin, dynamic duo against crime and corruption. Whose secret identities as millionaire philanthropist Bruce Wayne, and his young ward, Dick Grayson, are known only to Alfred, their faithful butler. Ever alert, they respond to a signal from the police, and moments later, from the secret batcave deep beneath Wayne Manor, they roar out. To protect life, limb, and property as...Batman and Robin, caped crime fighters. Batman and Robin, scourge...to Gotham city's kooky criminals; The Joker, clown prince of crime. The Penguine, pudgy purveyor of pervity. And ,the cool, cruel Mr. Freeze. Watch out villains here comes.... Batman and Robin. Cmon already!!!!

5 out of 5 stars Filmation's Super New Adventures of Batman!.......2007-05-03

Featuring the voices of Batman's Adam West and Burt Ward as Batman/Bruce Wayne and Robin/Dick Grayson, The New Adventures of Batman (1977) was the 2nd Batman animated series produced by Filmation for CBS following their 1968 Batman animated series.

Though Filmation retained most of the '60s show's character designs and production art for the '70s series, The New Adventures of Batman's use of rotoscoping (tracing over live footage), coupled with West and Ward's vocal performances gave the 70s show its artistic edge. Like most Filmation shows, educational messages were addressed at the end of every episode via "Bat-message."

The New Adventures of Batman - The Complete Series is a 2-disc set featuring all 16 episodes; Full Frame (1.33:1) video; Dolby Surround Stereo audio; plus the following Special Features:

* Featurette: "Dark Versus Light - Filmation and the Batman": Examines the legacy of Filmation and its depiction of the DC character through interviews; and explores the split between Filmation's lighter comedic version of the character and the darker brooding Detective Comics version of the time.

* Bat-Commentary: Audio commentary on two episodes by Filmation historian Michael Swanigan and Filmation founder Lou Schiemer. (The special feature will be denoted with a selectable button indicating the respective episode from which the commentary is derived.)

Episodes:
1. The Pest
2. The Moonman
3. Trouble Identity

A classic fable gets fused with <I>War of the Worlds</I> in Disney's <I>Chicken Little</I>. In the small town of Oakey Oaks, young Chicken Little (voiced by Zach Braff, <I>Garden State</I>) struggles to live down the embarrassment of having once thought the sky was falling. But when he gets struck again by a hexagonal, sky-camouflaged, hi-tech doohickey, he and his friends Ugly Duckling (Joan Cusack, <I>School of Rock</I>), Runt of the Litter (Steve Zahn, <I>Sahara</I>), and Fish Out of Water discover that aliens are preparing to invade Earth--but since no one believed Chicken Little the first time, why would they believe him now? Though kids will enjoy the bright whizz-bang action sequences of <I>Chicken Little</I>, discerning parents will find the movie tedious. Technically, it has the computer animation quality of Pixar--but with none of their intelligence, heart, or simple storytelling skill. The basic idea of connecting the fable to aliens is amusing, but the script routinely bogs down in clumsy father-son issues that seem like material edited out of <I>Finding Nemo</I>. The jokes rarely have anything to do with the characters, but are mostly pop-culture references that are sadly out of date. The action sequences were obviously created with the inevitable video game in mind, for which the movie is little more than an advertisement. <I>Chicken Little</I> falls flat. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars highly entertaining.......2007-06-20

Highly enjoyable. Fun twist on the old. Getting tired of the Disney formula (child missing one or both parent(s)disfunctional and/or ignorant
parent or family member(s) raising misunderstood child)
Love the fact that being yourelf and not conforming to the stereotypical cheerleader and jock theme is encouraged throughout the movie. The characters had depth and personality, the animation was fun, the jokes and little remarks kept the movie rolling. Most younger kids won't get the jokes, or the references but then again kids aren't usually even paying attention to those details. It was just fun to watch.

5 out of 5 stars great movie.......2007-05-27

This is a great movie for the young and old. It has a great story line and is funny. A good DVD buy.

5 out of 5 stars More Chicken Little.......2007-04-11

I Love This Movie! I can't say it any clearer. The story carries the day in a classic tale with a twist. The fun is fun for all, reaching both young and old. If you don't like this movie, you just don't like having fun.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie for 3 year old.......2007-03-17

I bought this for my grandaughter's 3rd birthday. She loves it and sits with all her animals around her.

3 out of 5 stars Let the screaming begin.......2007-03-10

I bought the DVD because I didn't catch it at the movies. So I premiered it for myself-at home. The first few times. . . I absolutely hated it (and I am a big Disney fan!)because the alien invasion part of the movie required alot of non-stop screaming, rather than dialogue. And I kept wondering, why are they continually playing oldies but goodies?? The ending credits almost takes it for granted that everyone in the audience had a wonderful time, by allowing the various characters dance to "Don't go breaking my heart" as if success was inevitable. This made things worse.
For some unknown reason, I find myself hopelessly drawn to replay this movie at home, slowly digesting the looney tune madness for whatever it's worth. Maybe my barrier brain began to let loose, but I found myself liking the nonsense. It's almost like I said to myself, "I GET IT NOW!!"
Here is a circle of looney tune nerds relying on each other for friendship and support, much like high school outcasts that bond for survival. Of course, they are unattractive. . . most outcasts nerds from the main social circles. . . generally are!
The backwards music only exemplifies how they also don't subscribe to the latest hits, and are caught up in the entertainment of it.
Chicken Little, deserved a quick flash of a kiss, because he wanted to be a winner, and nothing else, in spite of what he thought were hallucinations. He wanted to go the distance, and not like a typical nerd.
It's all beginning to gel somehow, and I can't wait to see it again. .ok??
By the way, Chicken Little's father confessing to his son towards the end of the movie, that he quite possibly is responsible for mistreating him, is unusually candid for an animated parent to admit to his offspring, and definitely give this production a thumbs up for that.

<I>Pete and Pete</I> took an alternative rock approach to the family sitcom. In other words, this wasn't your dad's situation comedy. Is it any wonder so many alternative musicians, like Juliana Hatfield, the B-52's Kate Pierson, R.E.M.'s Michael Stipe, and Blondie's Debbie Harry flocked to the (fictional) town of Wellsville? Nor could independent film actors, like Richard Edson (<I>Stranger Than Paradise</I>), Martin Donovan (<I>Saved!</I>), and Steve Buscemi (<I>Fargo</I>), resist the allure of the appealingly offbeat Wrigley family.

Meet the Wrigleys: redheaded teenager Pete (Michael Maronna, <I>Home Alone</I>), redheaded elementary school student Pete (Danny Tamberelli, <I>The Mighty Ducks</I>) and his tattoo Petunia, Dad (Hardy Rawls), Mom (Judy Grafe)--and the metal plate in her head. First season cast members include Big Pete's almost-girlfriend Ellen (Alison Fanelli), Little Pete's pal Natasha (Heather Matarazzo, <I>Welcome to the Dollhouse</I>), bus driver Stu (Damian Young), and Little Pete's personal superhero, Artie (Toby Huss), the strongest man in the world. Buscemi appears as Ellen's dad in "Apocalypse Pete" and would return for another episode in the second season.

The first season followed three years of 60-second shorts. It features 12 adventures (eight regular episodes plus four specials). Highlights include "King of the Road," in which the Wrigleys battle for road trip supremacy, "Tool and Die," in which Big Pete learns not to judge a shop teacher by his cover, and "Hard Day's Pete," in which Little Pete forms the Blowholes with Syd Straw and Marshall Crenshaw. Then there's "Don't Tread on Pete," in which Little Pete utters the immortal line, "Is this guy pickin' your scabs the way he's pickin' my scabs?" <I>The Adventures of Pete and Pete</I> ran on Nickelodeon for three well-loved, much-missed seasons. <I>--Kathleen C. Fennessy</I>

Description

In THE ADVENTURES OF PETE & PETE, Pete and Pete are two redheaded brothers living in the somewhat surreal town of Wellsville. Pete, the older of the two, narrates the stories about their adventures in everyday life.

5 out of 5 stars a must own!.......2007-06-23

I never realized how sophisticated this show was when I watched it as a child. It is almost depressing to watch knowing the garbage that is out there on kids' networks today! What has happened to Nickelodeon?

You could watch the entire season without being bored.

I WANT SEASON THREE! I feel cheated after buying seasons 1 & 2 and no season 3 in sight!

4 out of 5 stars A CHRISTMAS HIT!!!.......2007-01-20

MY 14 YEAR OLD SON "M" WANTED THIS DVD FOR CHRISTMAS AND HE REALLY ENJOYED THIS DVD, I ALSO GOT SEASON 2. HE USED TO WATCH THIS SHOW WHEN HE WAS STILL IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL SO WHEN HE RECEIVED BOTH DVD'S FOR XMAS, HE'S BEEN WATCHING SINCE XMAS DAY.

4 out of 5 stars Offbeat and Fun.......2007-01-12

If you've never seen Pete & Pete on Nickelodeon, you've missed out. The characters are quirky, strange and a lot of fun. I watched this show with my children as they were growing up and it's still really great to watch now. I highly recommend this TV show for anyone aged 6-96.

5 out of 5 stars A child's perception?.......2007-01-03

Pete & Pete is a wonderful series of shows. Similar in style to "A Christmas Story", these stories are related through the eyes of the young, except in a modern setting.

It is said that humor only works when it contains an element of truth. And so Pete & Pete works as many levels, as it reflects on the experience of being young, and provides significant insights on the apparent comedy of the adult world.

It is thoroughly enjoyable, especially for those with the youth or wisdom to see life's comedy.

5 out of 5 stars A Childhood favorite is Still Relevant.......2006-12-10

I first began watching "The Adventures of Pete and Pete" as a kid growing up in the 90s. The show instantly struck a chord (literally) with me. The combination of narrative and whimsical tales that every kid ponders (International Parent Conspiracy, Outer Space, Independence, Love), to the great cameos (Michael Stipe, Iggy Pop, Steve Buscemi, Adam West, Kate Pierson), exposure to indie rock (which I still appreciate to this day), and endearing characters really made this show magical for me.

I'll never forget watching "King of the Road" and just giggling my head off while my dad watched next to me and laughed along. There aren't many kids shows out there that can transcend generational gaps like that. I can still go back and enjoy these episodes at 24 as much if not more so than I did when I was a kid. I think that says it all. The commentary on the DVDs makes it just that much more special when you see how fresh this all was for the time.

Holy camp site, Batman! After a fabulously successful season on TV, the campy comic book adventure hit the big screen, complete with painful puns, outrageous supervillains, and fights punctuated with word balloons sporting such onomatopoeic syllables as "Pow!," "Thud!," and "Blammo!" Adam West's wooden Batman is the cowled vigilante alter ego of straight-arrow millionaire Bruce Wayne and Bruce Ward's Robin (a.k.a. Dick Grayson, Bruce's young collegiate protégé) his overeager sidekick in hot pants. Together they battle an unholy alliance of Gotham City's greatest criminals: the Joker (Cesar Romero, whooping up a storm), the Riddler (giggling Frank Gorshin), the Penguin (cackling Burgess Meredith), and the purr-fectly sexy Catwoman (Lee Meriwether slinking in a skin-tight black bodysuit). The criminals are, naturally, out to conquer the world, but with a little help from their unending supply of utility belt devices (bat shark repellent, anyone?), our dynamic duo thwarts their nefarious plans at every turn. Since the TV show ran under 30 minutes an episode (with commercials), the 105-minute film runs a little thin--a little camp goes a long way--but fans of the small-screen show will enjoy the spoofing tone throughout. Leslie H. Martinson directs Lorenzo Semple's screenplay like a big-budget TV episode minus the cliffhanger endings. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

5 out of 5 stars The Dark Knight, As Campy As Ever!.......2007-04-15

The film adaptation of the hit ABC series of the 1960's has it all. Action, danger, romance, and comedy! Adam West and Burt Ward were at their best as Batman and Robin, Lee Meriwether was just as sexy as the Catwoman than Julie Newmar(who was unable to appear in the film due to a prior commitment), and Cesar Romero, Burgess Meridith and Frank Gorshin was hilariously excellent as the villains. The special features in the DVD has a mini-documentary featuring Adam and Burt talking about their days on the set of the Batman movie, and there's also a tour of the 1966 Batmobile as told by the man who made it possible, George Barris. I love this film, I have not seen it in years. It may not be the TV series that we wished for, but it is close enough!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for chidren.......2007-04-01

My 3 year old grandson loves Batman and Scooby Doo, so this couldn't have been better. He watches it over and over and is thoroughly entertained. It can fill up a rainy afternoon with fun and enjoyment.

4 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC PIECE OF HOKINESS.......2007-02-10

I like everything Batman, except for the sequels that followed the 1989 movie, and this is one of the best incarnations. Though it looks cheesy by todays standards, that's really what they were shooting for back in 1966. I loved the bonus features and especially the commentary by Adam West and Burt Ward who let the viewers know that they also were'nt taking this seriously. My favorite is when Batman and Robin are trying to separate the dehydrated dust and are wearing doctors masks and aprons and Adam West says "look at these two idiots." Also if the execs at Fox are reading these reviews, PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE ON HANDS AND KNEES, release the show on DVD!!!

4 out of 5 stars The Series is Better.......2007-01-21

I'm not a big fan of the dark, unhinged Batman of today. I prefer the Detective Comics of the 1930s-1960s. I have always loved the classic, campy "Batman" (1966-1968) series starring Adam West and Burt Ward.
Fox's movie is more and more illogical the older I get. Much of the events that took place in the feature film happened by chance. Alfred, Aunt Harriet, Commissioner Gordon and Chief O'Hara have almost no part in the film. But overall, with the five most famous super villains--the Joker, the Riddler, the Penguin and the Catwoman--the film was a satisfactory one, even though it was extremely zany. I hope that Fox or whoever has the decency to release the TV series on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Holy Nostalgia!.......2007-01-17

I had the pleasure of watching this movie -- and the accompanying TV series -- in two different, but equally enjoyable, phases: First, as a 4th grader when they were first released in the 60s -- when I took them at face value as super hero adventure stories; and later, as an adult, reveling in the campy humor and the droll, dead-pan delivery of Adam West. This is a very corny movie -- but in a good way! Lots of fun. I especially enjoyed watching it while listening to the commentary by West and Burt Ward.
And by the way, though I'm not a kid any more, I still want that Batmobile in my garage, and want to take the Bat Boat out for a high-speed run on the lake!

A new neighbor joins the redheaded brothers for their second season on Nickelodeon. The accident-prone Nona Mecklenberg (Michelle Trachtenberg) makes her first appearance in the premiere ("Grounded for Life"), where she is introduced as "the loneliest girl in Wellsville." By the end of the episode, that's no longer true as she and Little Pete (Danny Tamberelli) have become fast friends. Alas, nobody can take the place of his pet lizard, Gary, who makes his debut--and swan song--in the following adventure ("The Big Quiet'). Mona's dad, James (Iggy Pop, looking sharp in cardigan and khakis), will join the cast just in time for "Halloweenie," in which Pumpkin Eaters terrorize the neighborhood.</p> As for Big Pete (Michael Maronna), he'll finally ask Ellen (Alison Fanelli) out in "Time Tunnel". Endless Mike (Rick Gomez), in a rare moment of kindness, will lend him his car. It won't really change things, however. Maybe some people are meant to be friends--and others to be enemies. Then there are the Wrigley parents. In the first season, Dad (Hardy Rawls) fought for road trip supremacy. Now it's about having the best lawn and catching Bob, the biggest fish in the lake. Metal plate aside, Mom (Judy Grafe) does what she can to keep the craziness in check.

As before, Big Pete narrates in that delightful deadpan, and many old favorites are back: bus driver Stu (Damian Young), math teacher Miss Fingerwood (Syd Straw), Ellen's dad, Mr. Hickle (Steve Buscemi), and strongman Artie (Toby Huss). Little Pete's personal superhero will make his final appearance in the two-part "Farewell, My Little Viking." Guest stars include Gordon Gano as substitute teacher Zank ("X=Why?"), Bebe Neuwirth as McGinty the mailcarrier, David Johansen as park ranger Thorsen ("On Golden Pete"), and Chris Elliot as psychic meter man Ray ("Sick Day"). --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5 out of 5 stars This is the real deal. .......2007-06-11

Ok Pete and Pete was always one of my favorite shows as a kid. I mean Big Pete and Little Pete were really believable characters, and I remember watching the show to the point of thinking when I walked down the street, Little Danny or Nona would come out of their house and want to play. Really good acting! (I knew reality, just painting a picture) I loved the entrance music, though I have to admit it kinda had the wannabe grunge punk sound to it. I love it! Anyways this show is actually enjoyable to watch, even at 22 years old. Not this crap thats on tv nowadays.

Nickelodeon SUCKS! How dare they only give us seasons 1 and 2 only. Season 3 was due out March 2006 and got canceled. That is a real d--- faced move. Nick, you suck. Give us the rest of the series. I'm sofa king mad at Nick.

My husband and I use to watch this with our kids, when they were growing up. My husband really loved the show, as it has a very strange side to it. I have bought season one and season two for him and the kids to watch together. Though the "kids" are young adults, they still humor the old man and watch.

As someone said before it will have been good if this dvd had some dubbed language and subtitles. I am from Latin America and as a kid I watched the episodes in Spanish and I wanted to experience that again, that is a big mistake of nickelodeon, also the quality of the image is poor. Definitely not what I expected I hope they will release another version with at least spanish subtitles.

4 out of 5 stars The Title Says It All!.......2007-05-29

"Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show!" as announced in the opening main title by veteran voice artist Dick Tufeld (Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends, Thundarr the Barbarian) was the next to last incarnation of the long-running Super Friends series.

Based on the Super Powers toy line of the time featuring select DC Comics heroes including hero Firestorm (a long-time personal favorite of mine), Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show (1984) is most revered as the Super Friends series that first introduced Firestorm the Nuclear Man in animated form, along with evil Apokalips lord Darkseid. Not to mention Adam West reprising his caped crusader role as the voice of this show's animated Batman.

Though still "Super Friends fun," the art and animation for "Super Powers" was diminished to rather cartoony proportions, as most Hanna-Barbera cartoons of the time (Challenge of the GoBots, Scary Scooby Funnies) tended to be. Dedicated SF fans will overlook it, while those spoiled on today's animation may not be so inclined. Firestorm's transformation scene still looks cool though. Plus the tone of the show is *slightly* more intense (for Super Friends) than the previous versions thanks to the presence of Darkseid. So while the quality of the show is down a bit, it still remains highly watchable.

Comprised of 16 episodes totaling 8 half hours (all 15 minute shorts), this "Super Powers" collection also may seem limited, especially to SF fans who were hoping that the follow-up series Super Powers Team: Galactic Guardians episodes would be included on the set. However, unlike the previous collections (each also containing 16 episodes, but were wrongly/confusingly titled "The First Season" and "Volume Two"), Super Friends: The Legendary Super Powers Show - The Complete Series is properly titled and contains exactly what the title says. Look for "Galactic Guardians" to follow suit later on in its own similar complete set.

Superfriends: The Legendary Supers Powers Show - The Complete Series is a 2-disc set featuring all episodes from the 1984-1985 season; Full-Frame (1.33:1) video; plus the following Special Features: "Evolution: New Heroes, Viler Villains, and Ethnic Additions": Featurette on the impact of the Super Friends era of cultural diversity in animation; "The Super Powers Collection": Featurette covers the correlation between the Super Friends and the toy industry; Commentary: On 5 key episodes by experts.

Episodes:
1. The Bride of Darkseid (Part I)
2. The Bride of Darkseid (Part II)
3. The Case of the Dreadful Dolls
4. The Case of the Shrinking Super Friends
5. The Curator
6. Darkseid's Golden Trap (Part I)
7. Darkseid's Golden Trap (Part II)
8. The Island of the Dinasoids
9. The Mask of Mystery
10. Mr. Mxyzptlk and the Magic Lamp
11. No Honor Among Super-Thieves
12. Reflections in Crime
13. The Royal Ruse

15. The Wrath of Brainiac
16. The Village of Lost Souls

4 out of 5 stars Probably one of the best SF series ever.......2007-05-02

Yes if they are only doing the 1984 series, it will be a bit skimpy (still want to know what the bonuses are, and I wonder if any of the "lost" 1980s shorts will make it on this set, as they were seen as filler on some of the original broadcasts). But being "abused" by WB's marketing schemes in this case is worth it to me...well, in general, I am a big Superfriends fan anyway. And by this time, the show was turning towards the elements (including a slightly more serious nature) that would culminate with The Super Powers Team. It took one of Challenge of the SF's main strengths by using more villains from the comics; Lex Luthor and Mxyzptlk would return, joined by appearances from Mirror Master, the revamped Brainiac, and most of all, Darkseid and other New Gods characters! And on the side of justice is one of the most underrated DC heroes, Firestorm the Nuclear Man (by the time of the SPT, Cyborg would join next, and we'd see the Wonder Twins and most of the Multicultural Pals phased out). As a bonus, Batman's voice from then on would be Adam West, which made the character seem less nerdy than the Olan Soule version. Soule would take over the role of Martin Stein, one-half of Firestorm, in this season. Stein and Batman even team up for one episode!

Yes this might be a sparse DVD release, but still worth it for me to have pristine copies of this season. Bring on the Super Powers Team, and some more of the Superfriends series (All-New SF Hour, anyone? World's Greatest SF? The aforementioned "lost" episodes? Heck I'd even buy a set devoted to the Wendy and Marvin episodes)

3 out of 5 stars Really Really hoping for more.......2007-04-30

I am glad that WB is continuing to release different incarnations of the Super-Friendsa, and will hopefully release them all, but I have concerns with the lack of content of this set. The 1984 season of "Superfriends:The Legendary Superpowers show" only had eight 1/2 hour episodes (sixteen, 11 minute episodes if you break them down), but with most DVD box sets all that could easily fit on one disk. I am hoping the 2nd disk has the follow up season "Galactic Guardians", which only had seven 1/2 hour episodes with some being a full 1/2 hour, and some being two short episodes. These would be great to package together as one set, but I fear WB will get cheap and try to get the most for their money that they can. Lets just hope they decide on what most fans would like, so that their DVD sales can continue to be profitable.

In the real world, drug use is unimaginably boring to watch--but it inspires spectacular visuals in movies like <I>Trainspotting</I> and <I>Drugstore Cowboy</I>. To this list add <I>The Salton Sea</I>, a moody thriller starring Val Kilmer as a musician who goes undercover into the world of speed freaks to find the men who killed his wife. Though that plot summary may sound trite, creative direction, strong performances, and a solid script that shifts to and fro in time make <I>The Salton Sea</I> worth a look. Kilmer has an erratic track record but he's always an intriguing on-screen presence; Vincent D'Onofrio has a field day playing a noseless speed dealer called Pooh Bear. The cast is full of excellent character actors, including Anthony LaPaglia (<I>Lantana</I>), Peter Sarsgaard (<I>Boys Don't Cry</I>), B.D. Wong (<I>Jurassic Park</I>), Deborah Kara Unger (<I>Crash</I>), Adam Goldberg (<I>Saving Private Ryan</I>), and Luis Guzman (<I>The Limey</I>). <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Description

In the Imperial Valley of Southern California there is a little known body of water 226 feet below sea level, one of the lowest points in the United States. As there is no outlet from this sea, water is being removed only by evaporation, which results in a salinity level more than 25 percent higher than the Pacific Ocean. There is an eerie stillness to this vast sea, and a peculiar density to the water. This lake is the Salton Sea. Set against this remote and mysterious landscape, an unexpected and brutal crime leaves an innocent woman, caught in the wrong place at the wrong time, dead at the hands of masked gunmen. Her husband's life is left in ruins, his every waking moment haunted by the recurring imagery of the murder he witnessed, but was powerless to prevent. "The Salton Sea" is a character-driven crime thriller about an unlikely hero entangled in a web of deceit and treachery. Full of unexpected twists and turns, this is a compelling and emotionally-charged story about loss and recovery set to the lonely resonant tones of jazz great Miles Davis' horn. Danny Parker (VAL KILMER) is a man in search of redemption, consumed by a sense of loneliness and alienation. Following the death of his wife (CHANDRA WEST), he is set adrift in a seedy underworld inhabited by an eclectic, and often comical, cast of characters united principally by their choice of drug: crystal methamphetamine. An accomplished jazz musician, Danny is now a low-life "tweaker" in Los Angeles who leads us through a frenzied maze, one from which he must emerge before his tenuous grip on reality snaps for good. In a bold attempt Danny secretly hatches a plan to serve as middle-man in a lucrative drug deal. With the help of his friend Jimmy "The Finn" (PETER SARSGAARD), Danny is introduced to Pooh-Bear (VINCENT D'ONOFRIO), a methamphetamine baron with a penchant for sadistic recreational games, who seals the deal. But in this mad world, nothing - most of all Danny - is what it seems.

4 out of 5 stars Slick, grimy noir........2007-05-27

The Salton Sea (D. J. Caruso, 2002)

It took me a while to get round to seeing this movie, and I regret that now. For some reason, there was about a five-year stretch where neo-noir was huge in Hollywood (blame Fargo, I guess), and then they just stopped coming. With a few exceptions that pretty much everyone ignored, The Salton Sea being one of them. This is a travesty, because The Salton Sea manages to avoid a lot of the cookie-cutter noir trappings from which so many of those films suffered from. I grant you, I'm not saying it's anything original. No noir film is, or it wouldn't be noir. But it stays firmly in the present in its sensibilities, rather than either being a period piece or being set in the middle of nowhere so it can act like a period piece (viz. U-Turn or the aforementioned Fargo). Caruso also roped a stellar cast into this project and got top-notch performances out of the lot, and that's often what makes the difference between a Sunset Blvd. and a [insert generic fifties noir no one, including you, remembers anymore].

Danny Parker (Val Kilmer) is a jazz trumpeter who also happens to be a crystal meth addict. He developed the addiction after the untimely death of his wife. As we open, we have no idea what killed her, or why, only that Danny's life is a pretty ugly mess. He hangs around with a similar batch of meth addicts, but the only one who he can really consider a friend is Jimmy (Peter Sarsgaard). We quickly find out... oh, hell, I can't tell you that. Everything after the first five minutes of this movie is spoilersville. It's not that the plot is terribly complex, but it's terribly linear--this isn't one of those mysteries where you get dropped a piece of information, and then everyone assumes you forget it until miss Marple is in the drawing room. When Danny finds something out, he immediately uses it. Tony Gayton's screenplay approaches the doling out of information to the viewer the same way. When you get something, you can immediately paste it into the bigger picture the movie is drawing for you. (This is by design, as Danny challenges you to figure out who he is, and why he's playing a trumpet in a burning room, in the opening scene of the film.)

I vaguely remember the critical reaction to The Salton Sea being lukewarm. I'm hoping that my memory is, as usual, less than reliable, `cause this movie has, and delivers, the goods. If you missed it the first time round, and you're fond of noir, I recommend it highly. *** ½

5 out of 5 stars Best movie I have ever had the pleasure of seeing........2007-02-17

This is my number one film. Its the best example of neo-noir. Its kinda hard to get through at first, but as he says, just bear with him. It does a great job of screwing with your mind. Great flick, especialy if your into films like Memento or Fight Club.

5 out of 5 stars Great Drug Culture Noir Movie.......2007-01-31

Largely panned by critics, this is one of those movies that takes you into a culture that not many movies have done before. The tweaker world is a rich source of material, and this film takes pretty good advantage. You have to pay attention, though; It's tricky and hip, both in it's dialog and look. The cinematography and locations have some astounding moments; The violence is brutal, the situations unpleasant, and the humor surprisingly good. All the supporting performances are excellent, and the ending packs a wallop. This is a personal favorite; It's off-kilter, but that's the way I like them.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good Movie.......2007-01-30

I had decided to rent this film after seeing two recent Val Kilmer movies "Mindhunters" and "Kiss, Kiss, Bang, Bang" last year. Both movies were really good, so had decided to rent this movie as it seemed that Val Kilmer had really matured as an actor since his early days in movies like "Real Genius" and "Top Gun".

Kilmer plays trumpet player Danny Parker, who's wife has been murdered. Danny Parker takes matters into his own hands & goes undercover in attempts to find revenge/justice for his murdered wife. In the process, Danny Parker becomes a drug addict himself and immerses himself in the drug culture underworld. Slowly working his way to finding out who killed his beloved wife.

5 out of 5 stars A Must See Great Movie.......2007-01-12

This is a great movie! It had a limited showing in theaters. Not too many people know about it but, in time I think it will have a huge following.

Two deadbeat dudes are about to trade beer and pizza for soymilk and tofu in this outrageously funny comedy from the producers of Dumb and Dumber. But their world suddenly changes when they're accidentally trapped inside Bio-Dome a year long scientific ecological experiment with no fast food or cable television! Will Bud and Doyle adapt to their new found habitat or will their very presence spell extinction for themselves, the project and perhaps the entire planet?!

1 out of 5 stars Unfunny..........2007-02-25

I tried watching this on tv one time and couldn't get into it.I've never been a fan of Pauly Shore.I've always thought he was very grating and very annoying and couldn't act.I could see that they were trying to be funny, but it just didn't work.I thought the relationship between him and Stephen Baldwin bordered on homosexuality, which seemed kind of weird and wondered, why would the 2 girls be interested in these 2 in the first place?? I'm sure there are other Pauly Shore movies that are way better than this one,but I doubt it.I guess you have to be a certain age and mentality to enjoy this.He never did do anything beyond his "weasel" persona, like Adam Sandler or Jim Carrey did with their career.I guess he didn't have the talent to pursue anything else and so he faded into oblivion, which seemed that nobody else missed him.I mean,is anyone out there waiting and wanting a comeback from Pauly Shore? No,there isn't.If you like sub-mental movies, then try this one,but you're missing a whole lot of better quality and better written movies done by people who know what they're doing...If you want to see a movie where Stephen Baldwin doesn't embarrass himself, then try THE USUAL SUSPECTS.Otherwise, stay away from this completely!!!

5 out of 5 stars "Keep on going, buddy, keep on going down the line...".......2006-10-20

"Ahoy Noah, Your looking kind o' grizzly..."
"No, I am god..."
This is obviously an important flick, with over 100 reviews on Amazon. Most rave, a few bash -- almost none in the middle. It could be mindset, maybe political bent. But I feel sorry for those who cannot appreciate this little gem, an outrageously hilarious, quotable romp with a message! Yes, maybe the message is mixed with fart and stoner humor, but Bud and Doyle (the Frog and the Squirrel) who "own this place, total!" really grow and realize that they have "made Vasquez lake" and "have to fix it". They are not some "shaved down pool Nazis" they want to "free the Mahi-mahi, if you will..." and they go from guys who "can't cork it (negatory)" wanting to "pee in your Jurassic mall" to rejects even within the closed world of the Biodome: "I'm going to start my own dome, like a dome within a dome... so don't come knocking on my door!..." To formulating a plan to fight back after Doyle single-handedly and in one (mouth filled with Pizza) sentence "Don't give me any of that bourgeois/smourgeois -- gimme the drink, gimme the drink..." wins back his Photocopier-employed friend to make the flyers: "Have a beer with a deer..."

A better environmental piece than even Koyaanisqatsi. Almost as much fun as "Dancing. Naked. Want us to take of all our clothes, feed us some weird punch..."

I disagree that it's not right for kids. I think they should show it in the schools. (Current music is much more suggestive.) And my kids have watched it (with supervision) since an early age. We quote it all the time to each other a crack up. It is an endless source of family humor. we have watched it dozens of times together. Just a really great flick all around. I would give it six stars if I could.

So all I can say to the inimitable Pauly Shore is "Thank you Naomi!"

Kevin Costner is the big name here, but the film belongs squarely to Elijah Wood, who plays his son. The film deals with the children of a Vietnam veteran in 1970 Mississippi; as their dad (Costner) tries to cope with posttraumatic stress disorder after serving in the war, the kids build a mammoth tree house in the woods--then must defend it against the local white-trash bullies. The film includes a particularly harrowing contest involving a swim across the reservoir of a decrepit water tower; still, director Jon Avnet can't avoid a certain "can't we all just get along" didactic message. That doesn't put a damper on the youthfully natural quality of the child actors, and Costner is actually quite winning as a sensitive, troubled soul. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

5 out of 5 stars Wrongfully Accused.......2007-06-05

I read a lot of the other reviews and while a lot said good things about this film, some were also bad. One review said it should get an R rating because of the violence bewteen the kids, but childhood brawls, fights, failures and conquests are all about growing up. If we censor things for the children we don't prepare them for what to come. I think this movie has alot of important messages in it and I would suggest it for any parent to watch it with their kid. This was one of my favorite films when I was a kid, and although I didnt understand the post-traumatic stress disorder Kevin Costner was going through, I understood his angst and I had a better understanding of fights between children after I saw this movie. I did my share of neighborhood brawls when I was a kid and looking back now I dont even know of a reason. Its just something that we all go through. Parents shouldnt shun this away from their kids, after all it isn't Lord of the Flies. SPOILER* at the end of the movie it has a really important message when Elijah Wood's character risked his life to save one of the bullies, the message is that when in the face of death the minor fights between the kids were all forgotton in that instant- it didnt mean anything. It is also an important movie to show to kids for the vietnam aspect. How there was a war for the veterens of vietnam when they came home and soldiers have to deal with the guilt and whether they did the right thing or not- somewhat a good starting point for other movies like Born on the Forth of July and Jacob's Ladder. Other messages in this movie are racial ones, standing up for whats right, standing up for your friends, backing away from fights, and to treat anyone with dignity and respect no matter who they are. Also if you do watch this with your kid, prepare yourself, this like Fried Green Tomatoes is a sad movie. It deals with loss and hardships.
I hadn't watched this movie since I was a kid and I watched it again for the first time in 12 years. I have the same fondness I did since I was a kid and more so now because I can appreciate the wonderful soundtrack and score, with great songs by Janis Joplin, CCR, and Cat Stevens and one of the best places in a movie for Gimme Shelter. The score was beautiful and very inspirational from the very talented Thomas Newman. This was a wonderful movie that I would suggest to anyone- one that will always be close to my heart. And anyone who loved Friend Green Tomatoes and Forrest Gump will love this.

5 out of 5 stars Complete Tear Jerker!!!.......2007-05-24

I love this movie! To me, this is probably Costner's best performance. I cried from beginning to end. I definitely recommend this movie to anybody. My boyfriend even cried when he watched it!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-01-17

Good movie with some important lessons in a world that gravitates more and more toward violence. It really makes you think about whats really important in life.

The best acting I have ever seen from Elijah Wood. Surpases LOtR in my opinion.

2 out of 5 stars R..... not PG.......2006-05-22

This movie is rated PG; yet I was not able to show this movie to my kids. I know that the world is full of aggression, however how can I sit with my family and watch a movie with so much violence between kids. Some will tell me that it is good to expose children to such violence and possibly reality of life and the human beings among each other. I totally disagree.
This movie should be rated R and not PG
2 stars, only because of the great acting; the story is basic, about a father feeling awful for leaving his best buddy behind during the Vietnam War while his kids are fighting other children over a tree hut. I know I am probably going to bombarded with bad feedbacks however this is my honest opinion about this movie.
(Have you ever noticed that when someone writes a review that doesn't give the artist 4 or 5 stars - the reviewer gets slammed in the votes?)

5 out of 5 stars A Fantastic Box Office Sleeper.......2006-03-24

This is one of my all time favorite movies, "lipstick and rouge" is now a favorite way to describe all the superficial elements of life. This is a meaning of life movie, packed full of values for every age group. Enjoy and Savor!

Executive-produced by <I>Superman Returns</I> director Bryan Singer and narrated by star Kevin Spacey, <I>Look, Up in the Sky: The Amazing Story of Superman</I> is an exhaustive, nearly two-hour documentary covering over 60 years of the Man of Steel. It begins with the early work of Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster leading to the 1938 <I>Action Comics</I> debut of Superman, then continues through the Max Fleischer cartoons, the Columbia serials, to the 1950s <I>Adventures of Superman</I> series and the tragic suicide of its star, George Reeves. Then it's on to the 1966 Broadway musical, the 1970s feature films (including screen tests of Stockard Channing and Lesley Anne Warren), the paralysis and death of star Christopher Reeve, the subsequent TV series <I>Lois & Clark</I> and <I>Smallville</I>, and the 2006 feature <I>Superman Returns</I>. The documentary also discusses Superman's transformations during World War II, the atomic age, and the 1960s; events in the comic books such as John Byrne's reboot and <I>The Death of Superman</I>; and obscurities such as a pilot for <I>The Adventures of Superpup</I> and the TV-musical version of <I>It's a Bird… It's a Plane… It's Superman</I>. Interview subjects range from two-production stars such as Noel Neill and Jack Larson (who were in both <I>Adventures of Superman</I> and <I>Superman Returns</I>), and Annette O'Toole (<I>Superman III</I> and <I>Smallville</I>) to producer Ilya Salkind, director Richard Donner, Margot Kidder, Stan Lee, Dean Cain, and Brandon Routh. The animated series deserves more coverage, and some interviewees are conspicuously absent--no surprise <I>Lois & Clark</I>'s Teri Hatcher couldn't find the time, but what about <I>Smallville</I>'s Tom Welling?--but overall it's an impressive and engaging examination of the DC Comics icon. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>

4 out of 5 stars Review for this film.......2007-03-08

It was very interesting. There were a lot of things I didn't know about the history, but I really liked it overall.

Any Superman fan will enjoy this look at all the supermans in cinematic history.

5 out of 5 stars A Tribute to the Man of Steel.......2007-01-04

This DVD covers almost the entire history of Superman. From comics to radio to cartoons to movies. It's thorough and very informative. Guest stars include Billy Mummy, Mark Hammell, Gene Simmons, the original Lois Lane and Jimmy from the George Reeves' Superman show from the fifties, and several more. It keeps your interest and is a must for any Superman or just plain comic book fan of all ages. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars A hero for the ages.......2006-12-15

When did you first see the Man of Steel? Was it Christopher Reeve? George Reeves? Dean Cain? Even Kirk Allen, or maybe an animated Superman? This DVD makes a nestolgic trip across the characters 70+ year old history. Many moments taking me back to the times in the past. I first really got into Superman in 1986, when John Byrnes "Man of Steel" comic book came out. I was 15 years old then. However, I was a fan of the Christopher Reeve series but became distanced from the character after Superman 3 and Superman 4. Look up in the sky, really helps tell the history of the Man of Steel straight through Superman Returns, which is also a really great chapter for Superman in its own right. I recommend this DVD to collectors or anyone interested in Superman, or anyone wanting to know more about the roots of the character.
