5 out of 5 stars Al Pacino's first starring role, a stunning debut........2007-04-08

Thirty-six years (1971) after it came out it is finally being released on DVD. This stark and grim film was heavily criticized by critics mostly because of its brutal and honest drug content. Filmed on location in New York City, THE PANIC IN NEEDLE PARK, marked the real beginning of what was to become the amazing career of one of the greatest actors to ever grace the screen the legendary Al Pacino. Great movie that I am happy is finally making its way to video. The movie had been released in Europe for some time but never in the United States that is until now. I will definitely be purchasing this underrated movie classic that for years has become among die-hard Pacino fans one of his most sought after movies ever. To the studio that finally thought about releasing this movie after so many years of waiting I thank you kindly.

2 out of 5 stars The Boredom in Needle Park.......2007-02-12

This film drags along at snails pace, without any discernible plot. Although occasionally one is hinted at, it never seems to unfold. The "highlights" are a couple of extended, graphic heroin injection scenes, and otherwise two hours of muddy, low register mumbling of street jive and drug talk. After an hour it became a struggle just to sit through, but I forced myself to keep watching, convinced it was all leading to 'something'. Unfortunately it wasn't, and nothing happens.

Pacino himself is not remotely convincing as a down and out addict, and he doesn't fit in at all with the junkie crew. The lone saving grace is Pacino's creepy brother Hank (played by Richard Bright), who convincingly portrays a career burgular. His scenes and character draw you in, but unfortunately he vanishes midway, and we're back to dragged out scenes of Pacino and his girl slumped in bedrooms, high and staring vacantly into space.

Maybe this film will be of some interest to the Pacino-completist, but my personal advice would be to steer clear. And this is coming from both a Pacino fan, and a fan of 70s American cinema. Otherwise if you still want to proceed, a shot of heroin may be necessary before viewing.

5 out of 5 stars Pacino and Wynn.......2007-02-05

A true (*****) star movie is one that: 1.) Makes you think 2.) Makes you cry 3.) Makes you shudder 4.) then think again.
Ordinary People, A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, Goodfellas, Shawshank Redemption, and "I Want To Live", are five star movies.
This IS a five star movie.
The writing is rough, the characters are flawed, camera angles are off, yet this film is gripping to the core. I first saw this film on AMC when AMC was a pay channel. My first impression was,... how can a film end this way?
On second viewing,... what a masterpiece.
Pacino is at his (RAW) best. Wynn,... how can anyone act in this manner if they truly aren't like this in true life?
Moving and thought provoking.

5 out of 5 stars Keepin It Gangsta.......2007-01-25

Drama well first off i am a hard core al pacino fan.. I first heard if this movie in 1997, and just saw it for the first time last year....Granted I missed the first 15 minutes of it the movie lived up to my expectations in every way. Drug use, betrayl, and all around street... If it anit hood it aint right...... shout out to al pacino...whats popin wit scareface2...lol just playin holla at da kidd 1....

3 out of 5 stars The Panic In Money Court.......2006-10-20

Bobby (Al Pacino) is a small time drug dealer who lets his heroin addiction get in the way of his ability to turn a profit. Helen (portrayed by Kitty Winn) is the girlfriend who turns tricks to support their habbit and will stop at nothing (and will even have sex with Bobby's brother Hank) to keep the heroin flowing in their veins. Betrayal runs rampant in needle park as narcotics detective Hotch played by Alan Vint (Badlands) tries to convince Helen to turn against Bobby. Mis-cast and lost in the story is Helen's ex-boyfriend Marco (played by the talented Raul Julia) and look for Paul Sorvino (Goodfellas) as one of Helen's "Johns". Also lost in the plot are the constant delays of this films release on DVD. My guess is that it has more to do with who gets payed what and when.

Casual Pacino fans will find this about as disgusting as his role was in the 1980 film "Cruising". Directed by Jerry Schatzberg (1973's Scarecrow, which also starred Al Pacino) and produced by the "infamous" Dominick Dunne, 1971's "The Panic In Needle Park" has become somewhat of a cult favorite for it's graphic depiction of drug usage in the under belly of New York's kitchen district. A note of interest is Richard Bright's performance as Pacino's brother "Hank". Bright (Once Upon A Time In America & The Sopranos) is probably best remembered for his recurring role as Micheal Corleone's henchman in all three of "The Godfather" films, and his classic role as the silent thug in 1976's "Marathon Man". This is most certainly a must have film concerning Pacino fans, considering its Pacino's first feature length film.

Generally acknowledged as a bona fide classic, this Francis Ford Coppola film is one of those rare experiences that feels perfectly right from beginning to end--almost as if everyone involved had been born to participate in it. Based on Mario Puzo's bestselling novel about a Mafia dynasty, Coppola's <I>Godfather</I> extracted and enhanced the most universal themes of immigrant experience in America: the plotting-out of hopes and dreams for one's successors, the raising of children to carry on the good work, etc. In the midst of generational strife during the Vietnam years, the film somehow struck a chord with a nation fascinated by the metamorphosis of a rebellious son (Al Pacino) into the keeper of his father's dream. Marlon Brando played against Puzo's own conception of patriarch Vito Corleone, and time has certainly proven the actor correct. The rest of the cast, particularly James Caan, John Cazale, and Robert Duvall as the rest of Vito's male brood--all coping with how to take the mantle of responsibility from their father--is seamless and wonderful. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars The Godfather.......2007-06-21

The greatest movie ever. It can teach you all you need to know about life in 180 minutes. There you go, life in 3 hours

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Best!.......2007-05-15

What can I say, this is a fantastic epic! In my opinion, it is one of the best movies of all time. A+++

5 out of 5 stars IMHO, closer to the reality.......2007-04-15

It's sad to see the mafia or cosa nostra portrayed as a couple hundred thugs in New York hustling up money. The mafia is a worldwide organization and in the overall evaluation performs many good deeds and must benefit others more than it harms (Aquinas - "The greatest good for the greatest number"). The governmental systems in all countries always leave people behind and there must be some underground that picks up these people and helps them survive. Also, it seems to prove useful to have an underground which is at least somewhat prepared to fuel revolutions. Frequently, the mafia within a given country can prove a great asset to its government since they are usually privy to intelligence that escapes the ears of the government's agencies.

Everyone knows this movie, I would point out that I really liked the development of the expansion of the Cosa Nostra and in the sequels the international expansion.

5 out of 5 stars The movie that started the modern American mafia genera.......2007-04-14

The Godfather set the American Mafia movie genera. A good plot line with a tight scrip, superb direction and well acted. There are many murders, after all this is about gangsters but why it's rated "R" is beyond me. It's way less gruesome with less disturbing violence than Casino and many modern MA films are much more violent.

The power plays, honour and business scheming between the Mafia families give the framework of the film with personal trial and tribulations providing more depth for the character development that echo throughout the genera ever since and make The Godfather repeatedly watchable.

I wanted a copy for a present and after spending months looking for a copy in the retail shops without success, I found this widescreen version at a great price on Amazon within seconds and, I ended up keeping it.

5 out of 5 stars The King Kong of Gangster Movies.......2007-04-01

If I could rate this movie with ten stars, I wouldn't. it deserves 100 stars! This is one movie that should forever be rated as one of the top ten movies of all time!

It is about loyalty. it is about power. it is about honor. It is about how power is aquired in the dark world of the Underworld and how that power is transferred to the next generation, and how the next generation must secure and keep that power.

Santino Corleone is the obvious choice for the Don to give that power to. But he is a hot tempered loose cannon, and his temper is the thing that his enemies prey on to eliminate him. Fredo Corleone has no spine for that world, although he covets the power. Constanza Corleone is brought up in that world and obeys it's eddict to be the obediant wife, even to her creepy violent husband. but Michael... he is the idealist who wants nothing to do with that world.

Yet when the Don is shot, Michael accepts the mortal threat to his beloved family. He chooses to enter their world to protect them all. We see him "make his bones" to protect his father. We see his first wife take the bomb intended for him in Sicily. We see him transformed by these incidents to a creature barely recognizable to the happy idealist he once was.

Mike is groomed by his father to take over the Family "Business." When the Don dies, Michael is prepared and he orders a bloodbath to eliminate all enemies and consolidate his power. His ultimate betrayal is when he lies to his wife in the end.

Like moths to a flame, great actors gravitate to the singular genius of playwright-screenwriter David Mamet, who updated his Pulitzer Prize-winning play for this all-star screen adaptation. The material is not inherently cinematic, so the movie's greatest asset is Mamet's peerless dialogue and the assembly of a once-in-a-lifetime cast led by Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, and Alec Baldwin (the last in a role Mamet created especially for the film). Often regarded as a critique of the Reagan administration's impact on the American economy, the play and film focus on a competitive group of real estate salesmen who've gone from feast to famine in a market gone cold. When an executive "motivator" (Alec Baldwin) demands a sales contest among the agents in the cramped office, the stakes are critically high: any agent who fails to meet his quota of sales "leads" (i.e., potential buyers) will lose his job. This intense ultimatum is a boon for the office superstar (Pacino), but a once-successful salesman (Lemmon) now finds himself clinging nervously to faded glory. Political and personal rivalries erupt under pressure when the other agents (Alan Arkin, Ed Harris) suspect the office manager (Kevin Spacey) of foul play. This cauldron of anxiety, tension, and sheer desperation provides fertile soil for Mamet's scathingly rich dialogue, which is like rocket fuel for some of the greatest actors of our time. Pacino won an Oscar nomination for his volatile performance, but it's Lemmon who's the standout, doing some of the best work of his distinguished career. Director James Foley shapes Mamet's play into a stylish, intensely focused film that will stand for decades as a testament to its brilliant writer and cast. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

2 out of 5 stars Glengarry review.......2007-06-22

I am a huge Al Pacino fan, but honestly, this film bored me.
I did not enjoy any aspect of it and would not recommend it
to anyone. I am surprised so many others enjoyed it.
This is the only Al Pacino film I did not enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Sheer genius.......2007-06-17

If you've ever worked in sales then this movie will be instantly recognizable to you. Sales, especially commission-based sales, with all of it's epic highs and crushing lows, are the stuff of dreams. Anyone who's worked in any type of sales will recognize the characters portrayed in this movie; one day you're on a hot streak, master of your universe, and management can't stop telling you how great you are...then before you know it you're in a cold streak where you can't give product away and you stink so bad of failure that no one wants to be around you. It's no wonder that the highest paid people in the world are people who are really good at sales. It's also no wonder that this script drew such an all-star cast of actors; the dialogue is undeniably real because of the mix of desperation and cockiness. Buy it, live it, sell it...and always be closing.

5 out of 5 stars Salesmen acting badly very well...........2007-06-10

Pretty powerful stuff here. Picks apart flaws in middle management, and
demonstrates the frustration rampant in any similar business situation. And
plenty of bad language which helps to underscore how the pressure sends
one into a tailspin almost instantly, with sometimes irretrievable damage
done in the process. A very good viewing experience, and not a job I'd
want to do.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Sales Movie.......2007-06-08

This is one of few great Sales movies. This movie ranks right up there with Wall Street and more recent Boiler Room. This movie employs an entourage of big name actors. This is a must see for any person in the Sales Industry.

4 out of 5 stars An instant classic set in the Real Estate market.......2007-04-27

What is there to say about a film where you have Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Ed Harris, Alan Arkin, Alec Baldwin, and Kevin Spacey all in the same room at one time? Oh, and it's written and directed by David Mamet.

I'd heard of this film but didn't know much about it. After watching it, I'm surprised I waited so long. Glengarry Glen Ross is the kind of film that actors both love and dread to work on. As Alan Arkin says in the special features, it was the most exacting work any of the actors had ever done. The Mamet script comes through a bit intensely sometimes when you can hear the repetitiveness in the language, but with actors like these, it all feels natural, even when it seems a bit written.

The story is engaging, and the transfer from stage to film is of the highest quality. Set in the Real Estate industry, Glenngarry Glen Ross is the story of four salesman and the stringent new guidelines they are put under in order to keep their jobs. Lemmon and Pacino shine especially brightly in this film, but the rest of the cast handle their characters with the superb skill we've all seen in their other films.

This is a classic in every sense of the word.

I'm not sure why this is a 2-disc set. Disc 1 just has the widescreen presentation of the film, while Disc 2 has the fullscreen presentation as well as a ton of special features... but I think being able to buy the fullscreen OR the widescreen would be good enough.

Tony Kushner's prize-winning play <I>Angels in America</I> became the defining theatrical event of the 1990s, an astonishing mix of philosophy, politics, and vibrant gay soap opera that summed up the Reagan era for an entire generation of theater-goers. Post-9/11 would seem to be too late for a film version--philosophy and politics don't always age well--but this 2003 HBO adaptation, ably directed by Mike Nichols (<I>The Graduate</I>), provides a time capsule of the '80s and reveals the deep emotional subcurrents that will give the play lasting power.

The story centers around Prior Walter (Justin Kirk) and Louis Ironson (Ben Shenkman), a gay couple that falls apart when Prior grows ill as a result of AIDS. But cancer is not the only thing invading Prior's life: He begins to have religious visions of an angel (Emma Thompson, <I>Sense and Sensibility</I>) announcing that he is a prophet. Louis, who doesn't cope well with disease and suggestions of mortality, leaves and starts a relationship with Joe Pitt (Patrick Wilson), a closeted Mormon who works for Roy Cohn (Al Pacino, <I>Dog Day Afternoon</I>)--the real-life right-wing lawyer, notorious for his ruthless behind-the-scenes machinations. Add in Joe's depressed and hallucinating wife Harper (Mary Louise Parker, <I>Fried Green Tomatoes</I>), his determined but open-minded mother Hannah (Meryl Streep, <I>Adaptation</I>), a fierce drag queen/nurse named Belize (Jeffrey Wright, <I>Basquiat</I>, reprising his celebrated performance from the Broadway production), and you've still only begun to discover the wealth of characters and storylines in Kushner's ambitious work.

The powerhouse cast (also featuring James Cromwell, Michael Gambon, and Simon Callow) is uniformly superb. The script has its weaknesses--some of the fantastic elements, including Prior's journey to Heaven towards the end, fall flat--but even what doesn't work is bristling with ideas and a ferocious desire to capture human existence in this time and place. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

If I could rate it 10 stars I would. Heart-Wrenching, Funny, Appalling, Spiritual, Sexual, Powerful. Evoking Anger, Laughter, Sadness, Joy, Hope, Love for fellow human beings who have been discarded and ignored instead of included and cherished. Amazing Film Adaptation.

5 out of 5 stars Magnificent.......2007-03-03

I have seen many hundreds of movies, and this is only the third that I rate 5 stars. The acting was beyond superb, the screenplay and story line truly outstanding. I saw the play many years ago and totally enjoyed it. The DVD was even better.
While reading the reviews, it becomes obvious folks get different things out of the movie depending on their frame of reference. As a straight man working in San Francisco during the 80s and 90s, I watched the devastation this disease wreaked on friends, colleagues and strangers while the world ignored the issue. This movie gave me an insight into some of the emotional and spiritual struggles of the human beings affected by AIDS. I also loved how the lives of the characters intertwined in unique and sometimes outlandish ways. For me, a truly satisfying film. Most of the reviews express my thoughts better than I. A must see, but schedule 3 hours for each of the 2 DVDs.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful movie.......2007-01-04

This is a long movie but well worth the time. It's thought provoking, insight and even humorous in parts. Money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Marvelous.......2006-12-19

Profoundly moving. Evangelicals, please read the description. Don't buy it just because of the name and cover. It might not be about what you think it is. Nevertheless, if you've found yourself with it and have around six hours on hand, it's definitely worth a viewing or two. Part 1: Millenium approaches might drag a little bit, but Part 2: Perestroika, is some of the best theatre that I have ever seen or read. It's well worth your time. The writing is excellent, the acting is wonderful. It's a piece of art that definitely stays with you long after you've viewed it. Additionally, for people who truly love the miniseries, I also strongly recommend you read the play itself. There are a few changes in the adaptation, and it's worth your time from a critical perspective so how things are different. Both the DVD and the written play are wonderful on individual merit. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Hated it!.......2006-11-05

I spent more than $30 for this movie based on the glorious cover with no idea what it was about. I then spent six hours watching the entire movie. Twice. Someday in the new millenium the Republican-Christian hegemony prophesied in the movie during the 80s will outlaw movies like this and the behaviours that they portrey. Francis Ford Coppola took some of the deep background from the life of Mafia chief Vito Corleone--the patriarch of Mario Puzo's bestselling novel <I>The Godfather</I>--and built around it a stunning sequel to his Oscar-winning, 1972 hit film. Robert De Niro plays Vito as a young Sicilian immigrant in turn-of-the-century New York City's Little Italy. Coppola weaves in and out of the story of Vito's transformation into a powerful crime figure, contrasting that evolution against efforts by son Michael Corleone to spread the family's business into pre-Castro Cuba. As memorable as the first film is, <I>The Godfather II</I> is an amazingly intricate, symmetrical tragedy that touches upon several chapters of 20th-century history and makes a strong case that our destinies are written long before we're born. This was De Niro's first introduction to a lot of filmgoers, and he makes an enormous impression. But even with him and a number of truly brilliant actors (including maestro Lee Strasberg), this is ultimately Pacino's film and a masterful performance. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Description

This brilliant companion piece to the original film continues the saga of two generations of successive power within the Corleone family. Coppola tells two stories in Part II: the roots and rise of a young Don Vito, played with uncanny ability by Robert De Niro, and the ascension of Michael (Pacino) as the new Don.

5 out of 5 stars The Hardening of the Idealist.......2007-04-01

Most critics and the Motion Picture Academy agree. Godfather 2 is a worthy sequel to the blockbuster movie, The Godfather.

If you think that the Godfather saga is only about Organized Crime, you are wrong. It is about Family dynamics in a Sicillian family who's business just happens to be Organized Crime.

Michael is the quintessential Idealist. Whereas his father was a pragmatist bound in honor, and his brothers were respectivly a loose cannon and a milquetoast, Michaels idealism turned out to be his downfall. Whereas a pragmatist can be flexible, an idealist always insists that he is right all the time, and he runs his life in such a manner. When your life involves the Underworld, all your ideals will morph you into a pillar of granite. This is what Godfather 2 is all about.

In it we see two stories running paralell tracks. The first story is of Don Vito choosing to be a strongarm to protect his Family, his friends and his honor. Then we see Michael trying to do the same thing, but his ideals get in the way and he chooses to abandon them. He drive his friends and family away from himself by his sheer heartlessness and ruthlessness. In the end of Godfather 2, he has no honor, for he kills everyone in his way. Even his own brother, Fredo! We see in the end him sitting alone on a bench with an icy stare. But after all, he believes that all his actions were not only neccesary, but RIGHT!!! Michael tells Tom Hagen: "I dont feel that I have to kill everybody! Only my enemies." Yet to Michael, in the end, all those who do not agree with him are enemies!

To see Michael deal with his sins and attempt to buy his redemption, you must purchase Godfather 3 from Amazon.com!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful sequel to the Godfather.......2007-03-30

This is as fantastic a movie as the first part. The Metamorphosis of Michael Corleone which started in the first part reaches its completion in this sequel. He is so besotted with power that he does not want any one opposing him be it his wife, brother, or anyone. This movie shows us how life can change a "War-hero" to a power-drunk godfather.

5 out of 5 stars Great sequel.......2007-03-12

Even better than the original - because it probes deeper into the personalities, especially of Michael Corleone (Al Pacino) and his obsession with family and loyalty and snubbing out his enemies. He is quiet, educated, and coldly calculating. The movie traces his dealings in the 1950s-60s, set mainly in Nevada. Interspersed with these developments is the story of the rise of his father Don Vito Corleone in Little Italy in NYC in the 1920s, with Robert De Niro doing a brilliant job in that role. Both stories are excellently told. Despite my never quite understanding America's obsession with the mafia and its ilk, it's not hard to conclude that this is a major movie achievement.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Follow up.......2007-03-10

a good movie that explains the first one a little more

5 out of 5 stars Quality .......2007-02-26

I'd read that Godfather II was a worthy sequel, so I was desperately hoping that this would be true - and, oh, how it was! Although the movie was only filmed two years after the Godfather, about 7 years have gone by in the timeline of the story. The Corleone family, under the guidance of their new leader Michael, have moved to Las Vegas to make money from gambling. At the same time, the film also steps back into the past to show how Vito Corleone, Michael's deceased father and former Don, came to America and made his fortune.

As with the first film, the performances are incredible. The standout actors are Al Pacino as Michael and Robert De Niro as the young Vito Corleone. Both radiate power and dynamism the entire time they are on screen. De Niro looks regal (as befits the older man played by Marlon Brando in the first movie) whilst Pacino smoulders, somehow looking much more mature than the Michael from the first film, with his eyes practically burning holes in the TV screen. Some of the most moving shots were when Michael's face faded into Vito's, seeming to represent how the two characters were inextricably linked through time.

To watch the continuing transformation to Michael's character is both heartbreaking and fascinating. At the start of the film we see how the Corleone family are falling apart - Connie has become wild and cold-hearted to punish Michael for her husband's murder, Fredo is as hopeless (although well-meaning) as ever and Kay has pretty much stopped hoping Michael will ever turn into the 'good' man she hoped he would. Michael is also about to make some important business decisions, which cause tension and rivalry with other businessmen who don't want him to succeed. This all creates a power keg of anger, violence and emotion that explodes across the next few hours with shattering consequences. I thought it was a masterstroke to intertwine the present day happenings with the old story of Vito growing up. The history of the family explains and enlightens so much.

There are too many great performances by secondary characters to mention. Robert Duvall is sensational in his reprisal of the role of Tom Hagen. Diane Keaton completely nails the part of Kay - even when she reveals something completely shocking to Michael it is believable and her gaunt face seems to show all that has gone before.

The ending is completely satisfying, if indescribably tragic. I was torn between hating Michael (particularly after he ordered a murder in the last minutes of the film that completely shocked me and showed how he has changed irredeemably) and yet I wanted to sob for him and for the loss of what his life might have been. The final few minutes bring the stories of Michael and Vito together and leave you feeling like you've been punched in the stomach.

Overall, the Godfather II is just as iconic as the Godfather. It's great to watch a sequel that continues the story so well and is faithful to the characters. I have never seen a pair of films that so hauntingly and movingly trace the destruction of one man's soul and conscience.

This sprawling epic of bloodshed and excess, Brian De Palma's update of the classic 1932 crime drama by Howard Hawks, sparked controversy over its outrageous violence when released in 1983. Scarface is a wretched, fascinating car wreck of a movie, starring Al Pacino as a Cuban refugee who rises to the top of Miami's cocaine-driven underworld, only to fall hard into his own deadly trap of addiction and inevitable assassination. Scripted by Oliver Stone and running nearly three hours, it's the kind of film that can simultaneously disgust and amaze you (critic Pauline Kael wrote "this may be the only action picture that turns into an allegory of impotence"), with vivid supporting roles for Steven Bauer, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, and Robert Loggia. Universal's special edition digital video disc includes a documentary about the making of the film that features numerous interviews and several deleted scenes. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Al Pacino Proves Why He is a Legend.......2007-06-07

Al Pacino's charisma is incredible in this movie. Despite the anti-hero he plays, you can't help but to cheer for him to go further and further, become larger than life. Tony Montana is a cinematic icon as well as the American Dream gone dark.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE TOP 5 MOST VIOLENT FILMS EVER MADE........2007-05-26

I will be writing a review on the legendary DVD film "SCARFACE" starring one of Hollywood's all-time greatest actor's ever. I give you Mr. Al Pacino.

This legendary film would also be responsible for creating acting careers for other actors and actresses such as Steven Bauer (From Que Pasa USA), Michelle Pfeiffer (Hollywood Knights) and newcomer Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio.

It was the 1980's and Hollywood was still making violent films that were equivalent to the most violent films made in its hey day. 1971's Dirty Harry would be a violent film that would take violent films to another level resulting in other Dirty Harry sequels being made and open the doors for many other violent films that were yet to come.

In 1983, the whole world would get their answer as to which is the most violent film ever made. SCARFACE dared to take us all on a wild journey into the gothic tales and stories of Cocaine binging and drug lord killings unimaginable. SCARFACE also dared to take violence on film to another level and dimension so thrilling, that it built our adrenaline and kept us glued to the film from beginning to the end. Before SCARFACE was even released, there was already a controversy as to this film receiving an R rating or an X rating. SCARFACE would also dare to abuse the "F" word when most violent movies wouldn't even dare to mention it. SCARFACE to this very day, is definitely far ahead of its time. When SCARFACE was released, it singlehandedly shocked the world. I can see this film over and over and NEVER get tired of it. SCARFACE can EASILY stand up to any of the most violent films ever made today.

Al Pacino has delivered many great performances and given us some great movies through the years. In my opinion, SCARFACE stands as Pacino's best work and greatest achievement ever. I hope all of you will buy this legendary film and enjoy it for many years as I have. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Nice.......2007-05-12

I am a huge fan of Scarface (the older and the newer version). It's worth the purchase.

5 out of 5 stars SAY HELLO TO MY LITTLE FRIEND!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-06

All I have to say is that this film is a MASTERPIECE!

5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2007-04-15

Still awesome after what, 100 plus times viewing? This film was panned by virtually all of the critics and has yet remained a classic for nearly 25 years! Pacino is simply brilliant, the casting is superb and even the tawdry photography and music (at times) is delicious. The critics never could quite get over the controversial chainsaw scene and the 160 some odd uses of the "F word" and therefore slammed the movie as a whole. But in doing so, they missed what millions of others haven't: a great film with great acting and pacing. If you haven't already, see for yourself whether the violence and language is obscene and over-the-top, or whether it fits the movie nearly perfectly in its context. Oh, and Michelle Pfeiffer is hot..

"Cruising"

Perception

Amos Lassen and Cinema Pride

It is hard to believe that William Friedkin's "Cruising" is already 27 years old. What is amazing is that it has not been released on DVD but rumor has it that it will be soon. Friedkin
has recut it and is showing it again at this year's Cannes Film Festival so I suppose that is a sign that its release is imminent.
When "Cruising" came out it created quite a furor because of the way it depicted gay men as "they are". People saw masculine men dancing and kissing and participating in S&M activities and this was something that many had never seen before. The movie violated the picture people had of gay men as being effeminate and weak. The movie broke ground by showing that gay men, in particular the leather subculture, are real people and have some influence. The movie also showed the interiors of gay bars and the activity there as it was.
This is a brutal film and definitely affects the viewer as it combines murder, mystery, sex and subculture. Viewed today it still shocks and many still consider it to be homophobic by depicting gay men as being sexually obsessed whereas those many of the men who are members of the leather scene claim that it is accurate. It is important to remember that the movie was made before AIDS when sexual excess was extremely popular.
I do not think that people were fair to the movie--it is not a look at gay culture as a whole--it uses the leather scene to show how one man's life is affected by his work. Al Pacino as a cop investigating a murder gives an outstanding performance.
William Friedkin is known for making mysterious, dark films and he has done himself proud with this film. The controversy around it brought about a dialog which led to a better understanding of the gay community and if had done nothing else, that would have been enough. But "Cruising" is also a good movie even with all of the controversy.
This is not an easy film to watch. The characters are not the kind of people that we like and for some reason the film seems incomplete. I have heard that 40 minutes of film were cut due
to censorship problems but some of that is being restored to the film with the new cut. This should clarify any ambiguity of the film. What the film really seems to be about is the thin lie between good and evil.
"Cruising" is more than a movie--it is an experience and a provocative one at that. It has no soul and it is dark and physical. It is a riveting ad dark look at something many know nothing about. It is a sexual thriller in which Steve Burns (Al Pacino) is sent undercover into the gay community to find a serial killer who stalks the leather bars. The grittiness of the film reflects the scenes it pictures. This is not a gay film--it is a horror film, a very tense thriller with remarkable performances. It is also important as it pushed the door wide open for others to come in and take up filming the gay community. The plot may ramble but then so does life---like the movie, life is all over the place.

4 out of 5 stars you loved it or hated it.......2007-04-13

Cruising is an offensive thriller and that's precisely what Friedkin wanted it to be, despite the disclaimer at the beginning of the movie. I was 13 when this came out. I remember it was the talk of the town for a few weeks before disappearing from theaters. Some of the scenes are so vile and make one's stomach turn. In 1980 homosexuality was not quite as accepted as it it today, and it was pretty much okay to call yourself a "homophobe." This movie played on those fears that people had- and some still have. While it's undeniable that this type of underworld existed- and I'm sure still exists- I think the movie implied that this is how most gay men probably live.
I do agree with an earlier reviewer who said that the movie gets more interesting after watching it several times. By the way, did you notice who plays one of the police detectives?? it's that guy from "Married With Children."

4 out of 5 stars Why all the angst over this film & others like it?.......2007-02-24

"Crusing'"was a film that was both a crime drama and a social statement..it succeeded on both levels, but perhaps because it succeeded as a social statement it took unnecessary, politically correct heat...A nutcase is dismembering gay men...the police call upon a new detective, played by Al Pacino,to find him by faking it as a homosexual..Pacino follows leads through the'80s leather bar scene and,in the process, may begiving in to latent gay strains existing within himself...
The gay community was outraged by this film,as if,for starters, there could never be a gay murderer who randomly slaughters and dismembers other gays...Flapdoodle...there have been quite a few real-life homosexual murderers, whose mentality and whose crimes are every inch as disgusting as the ones depicted here, but, worse, unlike the killer depicted here, they were real...John Wayne Gacy comes to mind, among others...Then there have been the snipes directed towards Pacino, especially his dance scene..Now,honestly,does ANYONE out there think that, for an apparent straight guy,a cop no less(no matter that, latently,he may be otherwise)becoming a gay overnight,as it were,is as easy as turning a light-switch on and off?I defy any of these critics, straight or gay,to just up and relocate themselves into that other culture and see if they just fit right in right away...
Films that say or suggest uncomfortable truths about "fringe"cultures seem vulnerable to attacks by the politically correct police force out there...There can be no stereotypes...Gays must ALWAYS appear to be"just like the rest of us"even if,by definition, they are not...likewise there can be no cheap jews,no drunk Irish,no ignorant or violent blacks, ect ect...Apparently wish-fulfillment is more important than reality to the thought police...This film suggested that maybe the gay lifestyle was not all that it was cranked up to be...Straights recoiled from some of the representations because they were, well, offensive, while gays saw these same scenes as representing the loophole truths that they would prefer not to have been made so public..
When this film finally does get to DVD see it...it is hard-edged,and uncompromising, but it it worth the price of admission...

5 out of 5 stars PUT IT OUT ON DVD !!!.......2006-08-03

I saw this movie when it originally came out
and I was blown away by it.I got sick of waiting
for it to come to dvd so I transferred it onto
a blank disc just so it wouldn't deteriorate any
further.
How do I begin to describe this movie. When it
first came out it shocked both the gay and
straight community.I can understand the shock
of the straight community and the anger of the
gay community.
It was the 1980's and most gays were in and
not out of the closet. They needed positive images
of themselves to be projected to the straights.
So far there had been The Boys in the Band (1970)
and Le Cage Aux Folles ( 1979).So from these two
movies, gays were either suicidally unhappy or
limp wristed fruity tuities. And then along comes
Cruising. To state at the beginning of the movie
that it is not representative of the entire gay
community was a political move engedered to make
the gays less angry about it.It failed miserably.
Here's why.A whack job is knocking off gay men
in leather bars.( straights were probably saying
so what's wrong with that and what's a leather bar).
Al Pacino a straight cop is asked to infiltrate
the gay community posing as a gay leather freak.
The longer Pacino spends time in this sub culture
the stranger he acts with his girlfriend. He also
seems to be losing touch with his own reality.
The scenes in the leather bar are as scary as hell.
Scenes with f*** F****** and every one taking poppers,
along with the coloured hankerchief signals is enough
to turn most straights into anti-gays if they weren't
already.( I must say however that Pacino trying to
dance in the leather bar scene is hysterically funny)
In the end Pacino really loses it and kills someone.
I guess that's what happens to straights when they
try to enter the gay community. ( I'm joking)
Why did I like this movie?Because it did give a
true portrayal of the leather scene sub culture.
It wasn't one of those black water melon movies
that make todays black people cringe at.
Al Pacino does give a compelling performance of
a man who is losing himself in this sub culture
life style.
Is this movie worth seeing ? DEFINATELY

BRING IT OUT ON DVD !!!

Having developed his skill as a master of contemporary crime drama, writer-director Michael Mann displayed every aspect of that mastery in this intelligent, character-driven thriller from 1995, which also marked the first onscreen pairing of Robert De Niro and Al Pacino. The two great actors had played father and son in the separate time periods of <I>The Godfather, Part II</I>, but this was the first film in which the pair appeared together, and although their only scene together is brief, it's the riveting fulcrum of this high-tech cops-and-robbers scenario. De Niro plays a master thief with highly skilled partners (Val Kilmer and Tom Sizemore) whose latest heist draws the attention of Pacino, playing a seasoned Los Angeles detective whose investigation reveals that cop and criminal lead similar lives. Both are so devoted to their professions that their personal lives are a disaster. Pacino's with a wife (Diane Venora) who cheats to avoid the reality of their desolate marriage; De Niro pays the price for a life with no outside connections; and Kilmer's wife (Ashley Judd) has all but given up hope that her husband will quit his criminal career. These are men obsessed, and as De Niro and Pacino know, they'll both do whatever's necessary to bring the other down. Mann's brilliant screenplay explores these personal obsessions and sacrifices with absorbing insight, and the tension mounts with some of the most riveting action sequences ever filmed--most notably a daylight siege that turns downtown Los Angeles into a virtual war zone of automatic gunfire. At nearly three hours, the film qualifies as a kind of intimate epic, certain to leave some viewers impatiently waiting for more action, but it's all part of Mann's compelling strategy. <I>Heat</I> is a true rarity: a crime thriller with equal measures of intense excitement and dramatic depth, giving De Niro and Pacino a prime showcase for their finely matched talents. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Description

An L.A. cop (Al Pacino) becomes fixated on a deadly thief (Robert Dinero) and his crew ( Val Kilmer & Jon Voight) who are taking Los Angeles to the cleaners. This movie includes one of the most spectacular shoot outs in film history as Dinero and Kilmer rip through downtown Los Angeles with both guns blazing.

5 out of 5 stars feel the heat.......2007-06-15

So far I have not been dissapointed by anything directed by Michael Mann. This is an outstanding movie with a complete 5 star cast. Anyone who enjoys gritty, crime dramas and armed robbery should see this movie. Mann shows both sides of the coin(especially in the greatest scene of the movie where Pachino, the cop, has a face to face conversation with De Niro, the crook). A definite must have for movie collectors

5 out of 5 stars Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino ROCK.......2007-06-08

You can't expect anything less than a quality movie with 2 incredible actors such as DeNiro and Pacino. Awesome to see them battle against each other. My favorite part is when they sit down to chat and you'll see why. Long movie, so you better have time to watch it. For as long of a movie as it is, there were some ends left untied. Either way worth the watch.

5 out of 5 stars The best crime movie ever?.......2007-05-29

Theres not much I can add to what has already been said. However if by some miracle you've missed this film over the last 12 years then here is a quick overview of one of the best crime movies ever made.

Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro star as respectively dedicated cop and master criminal. Pacino as Cop Vincent Hanna is so dedicated that he neglects his family and his 3rd marraige is falling apart. DeNiro as Neil McCauley is a man who is prepared to walk away from any relationship in order to maintain his criminal lifestyle. A previous reviewer gave the acting honours to Pacino, which I'd have to disagree with. Lets be clear here both are excellent, and I like both actors, they are amongst the best ever. But for my money DeNiro steals it in perhaps his last great performance. Pacino just overplays his part just a little bit, which allows me to give it to DeNiro - but only just.

The remainder of the cast are excellent and Michael Mann directs with his usual skill. Some of the action sequences in this film are brilliantly done. I recently saw Mission Impossible III, which has some impressive action sequences in it but they aren't in the same league as the ones in this film. Why? Because Heat does not rely on CGI effects and the camerawork is vastly superior. Furthermore action sequences do not need to contain explosions every 30 seconds to make them work!

This is quite a long film at 164mins but you will find that it passes very quickly - always the sigh of a good film.

4 out of 5 stars Awesome movie!.......2007-05-28

DeNiro, and Pacino together in one movie. Enough said. Buy this movie if you like explosions and gunplay.

5 out of 5 stars Heat is around the corner - and you only have 30 seconds flat!.......2007-05-23

Since its release I've seen it a 100 times - The way Pacino and Deniro are dressed is just extravagant! The Deniro's French Cut and the Hair style of Pacino, the Tatoo on Tom Sizemor's Arm and the makeup on Val's Eyes -whoo! its just GREAT. The two sides of the law - the rules to follow and the disciplines and loyalties of Partners and Families. It all comes together in each of Michael Mann's movies and HEAT was just the beginning. I recommend every one of his films to be bought and watched again and again.

Hoo-hah! After seven Oscar nominations for his outstanding work in films such as The Godfather, Serpico, and Dog Day Afternoon, it's ironic that Al Pacino finally won the Oscar for his grandstanding lead performance in this 1992 crowd pleaser. As the blind, blunt, and ultimately benevolent retired Lieutenant Colonel Frank Slade, Pacino is both hammy and compelling, simultaneously subtle and grandly over-the-top when defending his new assistant and prep school student Charlie (Chris O'Donnell) at a disciplinary hearing. While the subplot involving Charlie's prep-school crisis plays like a sequel to Dead Poets Society, Pacino's adventurous escapades in New York City provide comic relief, rich character development, and a memorable supporting role for Gabrielle Anwar as the young woman who accepts the colonel's invitation to dance the tango. Scent of a Woman is a remake of the 1972 Italian film Profumo di donna. In addition to Pacino's award, the picture garnered Oscar nominations for director Martin Brest and for screenwriter Bo Goldman. --Jeff Shannon

2 out of 5 stars Two Perspectives.......2007-06-19

There are basically two ways to see this film. The sentimental fan of classic Hollywood sees it as an inspiring, uplifting story with a feelgood ending. The fan of realism and originality sees it as a predictable and formulaic cliche. The sentimental fan of classic Hollywood sees Al Pacino's performance as colorful, facinating, and larger than life. The fan of realism and originality sees Pacino's performance as over the top and lacking in any subtlety. The fan of classic Hollywood sees Pacino's closing speech and the ending of the film as inspiring and heartwarming. The fan of realism and originality sees the speech as a lame moralization and the ending as well as Pacino's character transformation to be a phony and unrealistic sellout to popular sensiblity.

If you are looking for the familiar crowd-pleasing kind of entertainment that Hollywood has always been trusted to provide, you will definitely find it here. But if you are a fan of artistic cinema you will wonder how Al Pacino could win an oscar for a role like this in a film like this and somehow not win for Godfather II. In fact, you will probably wonder what Pacino, as a dedicated method actor with such a great vision for playing complex and interestingly subtle characters, was thinking when he played this role.

During a downturn in his career, Al Pacino starred in this unfortunate comedy about a guy coping with a new romance, a house full of kids, and a new play--and doing a bad job of it. Pacino is a playwright who is convinced that he's about to have his first stage success. As opening night approaches, his wife bolts from the marriage, abandoning him with five kids (only one of whom is his). While he tries to juggle rewrites and a potential entanglement with a flighty actress and a demanding producer and director, he also has to solve his baby-sitting woes. Talk about trying to do it all. If only the material was as funny as Pacino, who may have made this film out of allegiance to its writer, Israel Horovitz, whose play The Indian Wants the Bronx gave Pacino one of his breakthrough roles in the early 1960s. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

Description

Life is getting complicated for Broadway playwright Ivan Travalian (Pacino). His flaky wife Gloria (Weld) is moving in with her lover, his director hates his new play and his leading lady (Cannon) is a terrified movie star who's never been on the stage. With five children to look after (most of them Gloria's), a budding romance with his leading lady, and a producer (King) demanding a rewrite, it's no wonder the emotionally and financially unstable Ivan starts to exhibit all kinds of irrational behavior.
