This <I>M*A*S*H</I>-tastic 36-disc collection is one for the television time capsule. It contains all 11 seasons of this multi-Emmy Award-winning series, PLUS Robert Altman's 1970 iconoclastic anti-war classic, PLUS two discs of special features, including two reunion specials and a series retrospective episode of A&E's <I>Biography</I>. As with the individual season sets, there are no new episode commentaries, a major disappointment. But <I>M*A*S*H</I>-ophiles will enjoy this set's other bonus features, including emotional behind-the-scenes footage of the filming of the last half-hour episode, "As Time Goes By," the inevitable bloopers, interviews with cast members as well as fans about their favorite episodes, a segment about the series' "Jocularity," a parade of PSAs (cut down on salt to avoid heart disease), and the text of an unproduced script penned by Alda for an episode titled, "Hawkeye on the Double." All of this material (except for a commemorative booklet) is available elsewhere in different configurations, but this space-saving (albeit ungainly packaged) box set collects them all under one tent.

Adapted for television by legendary comedy writer Larry Gelbart, the series has long since supplanted Altman's film in the public's consciousness. Life and death at a Mobile Army Surgical Hospital during the Korean War doesn't seem like ripe fodder for a comedy series, but <I>M*A*S*H</I> masterfully balanced laughter and tears (less so in its later, more preachy seasons). It often does play better without a laugh track (a viewing option for all episodes). During its run, <I>M*A*S*H</I> survived several delicate operations, including the departure of Gelbart after season 4 and the loss of core ensemble members McLean Stevenson as Col. Henry Blake and Wayne Rogers as Trapper John (after season 3), Larry Linville as Frank Burns (after season 5) and Gary Burghoff (a veteran of the original film) as Radar (after season 8). The show thrived with the introduction of some new blood, Henry Morgan as "regular Army" Col. Potter and Mike Farrell as compassionate BJ (season 4) and David Ogden Stiers as elitist Charles Emerson Winchester III (season 6).

<I>M*A*S*H</I> was honored with the prestigious Peabody Award "for the depth of its humor and the manner in which comedy is used to lift the spirit and, as well, to offer a profound statement on the nature of war." This was a sitcom that did not always leave you laughing, as witness the classic season 3 episode "Abyssinia, Henry." And throughout its run, <I>M*A*S*H</I> broke the sitcom mold with several episodes, including "The Interview" (season 4), in which Clete Roberts interviews the staff of the 4077th, "Point of View" (season 7), subjectively seen through the eyes of a wounded soldier and "Life Time" (season 8), which unfolds in real time. <I>M*A*S*H</I> boasted one of television's greatest ensembles, fully embodied characters who each became icons, most notably Alan Alda, who served with distinction as Hawkeye, the series' soul and conscience. But a special salute to Loretta Switt, whose Margaret Houlihan went from "Hot Lips" to nobody's pushover. From the "Pilot" to the feature-length finale, "Goodbye, Farewell & Amen," still the most-watched episode in history, this essential (but not so much if you bought the individual season sets) collection honors one of television's greatest half-hours. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

5 out of 5 stars mobile army show heaven.......2007-06-24

Attention all personel! The greatest television show in history is looking even better with this spectacular box set

4 out of 5 stars The perfect way to kill an entire rainy day or two, or a painfully long flight........2007-06-19

Product wise, the "M*A*S*H - Martinis and Medicine Complete Collection," has its fair share of problems.
Like the other reviewers have noted, the disc storage is less than perfect. It's obvious the manufacturer was going for aesthetics over practicality.
This is a handsome set despite the cardboard slots that definitely affect the individual DVDs.

As a collective work, the motion picture MASH and certain blocs of episodes deserve separate reviews.
The Robert Altman film that preceded the television series is very different from most TV episodes. If you saw the film first, your likely partial to the format and characters of the film, if you've grown up having only seen the television series you'll likely be put off by dark nature of the film.
I love the show and grew up with it, but became a huge fan of the film while serving in the Army.
With an amazing cast of actors: Robert Duvall, Donald Sutherland, Tom Skerritt and Elliot Gould the movie shares only Gary Burghoff (Radar O`Reilly) with the TV show. if you appreciate Altman's style, you would be hard pressed to find a more definitive Altman film.
The TV show became more of a collection of parables or anecdotal comedy, not often as dark and reflective as the film, but has its moments under the direction of Alan Alda.
Early episodes drew on Altman's influence for inspiration and this is clearly obvious, but later episodes evolved to reflect an independent feel with cast members often taking a guest director`s role. Many of the TV episodes featured contemporary issues in a Korean War setting.
For a television series to last longer than the war it parodied is remarkable in its own right, but to have a final episode audience that rivals a Super Bowl secures MASH's place in TV history.

5 out of 5 stars I am in hog heaven for sure........2007-06-12

I finally have enough M*A*S*H to watch and rewatch. The whole works, the whole shebang. I love it. Someone has needed to make all this available for a long time. There are still M*A*S*H fans who want to see favorite old episodes and much loved characters on demand. Great investment!

Purchased this MASH Martinis and Medicine collection for my husband as a birthday/father's day gift. I'm so happy I did. He enjoys it so much. So surprised to find out that there's shows that we've never seen before. This is a purchase that I'm so pleased with.

5 out of 5 stars Mash Medicine and Martinis Collection.......2007-06-02

I was over the moon when this came out. Everything in one package (complete series, extras, movie), what more could a Mash-er ask for ?

Well worth the price - cheaper than buying individual items. And the case is great and a tremendous space saver.

Bernard Slade's smart, funny, and touching play about an adulterous couple who meet one weekend a year for 26 years is nicely adapted for the screen by Robert Mulligan (To Kill a Mockingbird) in this 1978 film. The two-person story stars Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn, both of whom are outstanding at conveying a rainbow of emotions over a quarter-century as life gives and takes away, and the world convulses with change. Mulligan brings taste and honesty to the film, and Alda and Burstyn give full, living performances. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars Passionate ..and funny.......2007-05-26

Loved the historic timeline as backdrop to this movie.Alan Alda was perfect for this role! Wish it could be updated to the present time. The title song always gives me tingles....

5 out of 5 stars LIKE A GOOD WINE - BETTER WITH AGE.......2007-05-14

My wife and I celebrate our 30th anniversary of marriage this year and remember this movie fondly from almost 30 years ago. We both agreed that every aspect of the movie seemed better than when we viewed it last. The story was easier to follow, the humour seemed more ironic and the music exceeded my expectations in it's placement within the movie. I was left wanting more.

5 out of 5 stars A classic romance.......2007-05-13

Witty, philosophical, and an unlikely affair that happens once a year ... over decades. Delightful and sometimes a little painful. Ultimately, a classic romance (so now you know the ending).

4 out of 5 stars Heritage House, Mendocino.......2007-05-07

I bought this video to view before we visited the inn where it all happens: Heritage House in Mendocino, CA. As we drove up the coast, we talked about the movie, the moral issues, the actors, and it gave us so much to talk about, we almost missed the view of the Pacific! Just a little dated, but Alan Alda is so magnificent in this that you can put
aside your critic's pen and just enjoy. His performance should have brought him an Oscar.

5 out of 5 stars terrific romantic comedy.............2007-05-06

Doris (Ellen Burstyn) is a young housewife who has a chance encounter with George Peters (Alan Alda), at a country bed and breakfast. Though married to others, the two have an instant connection and mutual attraction. Though, both of them are devoted to their spouses and children, they agree to meet at the same time and place, year in and year out. As their 26 year love affair progresses, their conversations reflect the evolution of United States politics and social issues.

This film is funny, insightful and witty. Alan Alda and Ellen Burstyn have wonderful screen chemistry. They are very believable and are a joy to watch, as they celebrate one another's joyous ups and comfort each other at their darkest hours in life. Really great!

Like the TV incarnation of <I>The Odd Couple</I>, the <I>M*A*S*H</I> series has supplanted the original film in the public's consciousness. Legendary comedy writer Larry Gelbart (<I>Your Show of Shows</I>) deserves a medal for developing Robert Altman's bloody, funny 1970 classic for television with much of its anti-establishment spirit intact. These 24 first-season episodes--bracingly less politically correct than the shows in the final seasons--chart the program's sometimes bumpy evolution as it tried to remain true to the film's anarchic spirit while finding its own voice. The most memorable episodes include "The Pilot," which establishes the characters in broad strokes; "Sometimes You Hear the Bullet," in which a friend of Hawkeye's (Alan Alda) dies on the operating table (look for "Ronny" Howard as an underage soldier); "Cowboy," in which someone is trying to kill clueless commander Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson); and the pivotal "Dear Dad," the first of what would be a series of multistory episodes in which Hawkeye writes to his father about life at the 4077th. It is interesting to note film characters who made early exits from the series, including Timothy Brown's Spearchucker and Karen Philipp's Lt. Dish (George Morgan, who plays Father Mulcahy in the pilot, we hardly knew ye). Klinger (Jamie Farr), bucking for his Section 8 discharge, doesn't appear until the fifth episode, "Chief Surgeon Who?" And Gary Burghoff's Radar is a much more wily and savvy partner in crime to "Yankee Doodle Doctors" Hawkeye and Trapper John (Wayne Rogers) than in later seasons. In its 11-year run, <I>M*A*S*H</I> earned 14 Emmy Awards, and it remains one of TV's most beloved series. Though it is a staple of syndication, the episodes are presented here uncut, probably for the first time since their original broadcast. For <I>M*A*S*H</I> devotees, this three-disc set is just what the doctor ordered. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

Description

Korea, 1950. They were a MASH (Mobile Army Surgical Hospital) unit stationed three miles from the front. Incoming helicopters full of wounded brought the horrors of war to them daily and sometimes bullets flew right outside the operating room door. Occasional hilarity and constant hijinks were all that kept them sane. <P>Loosely based on real-life MASH unit 8055, life at the 4077 revolved around the day-to-day routines of Captain "Hawkeye" Pierce, Captain "Trapper" McIntyre, Lieutenant Colonel Henry Blake, Major Margaret Houlihan, Major Franklin Burns and Corporal "Radar" O'Reilly. Through these characters, viewers traveled beyond the long hours and the horrors of the operating room to a place where friendships were forged, laughter was found and drinks were served.

Buy this DVD if you like the show. Or communism wins.

5 out of 5 stars All my favorite Characters at their very best.......2007-05-18

For a 1970's TV series, the Picture is Excellent and the Sound is Very good. There are two sound tracks; one is without the irritating laugh track.
This was a present for my Mom, and she watches it, when there is nothing good on TV.
I never get tired of this show, and it has a lot of good memories.

5 out of 5 stars Mother's Day M*A*S*H.......2007-05-17

M*A*S*H is my mom's all time favorite. The week before Mother's Day my mom's mom passed away and while I was there for the funeral I gave it to her as an early Mother's Day gift. Now, when she goes over to check on my Granddad they watch it together and both are loving it! It was the perfect gift and at the perfect time--Season One is her fave!

5 out of 5 stars MASH Season 1 Is Very Funny and Entertaining.......2007-03-16

I grew up in the 60's and 70's. I was a teenager in the 70's. I always enjoyed watching MASH.The first season of this show, was superb, funny, and entertaining. I bought the first season on DVD, and I'm recalling seeing MASH,when it originally aired on television. I do plan on someday, purchasing Season 2 of MASH, and hopefully Season 3 as well. Though,I only liked the seasons 1 through 3,because I liked Wayne Rogers, who played Captain John "Trapper" Macintire, over Mike Farrell. So, when Wayne Rogers, left the show,at the of the third season,I didn't watch MASH, on a real regular basis, just every now and then. I really thought that Mike Farrell, was a weak comparison, to Wayne Rogers, and I honestly in my opinion, think that Mike Farrell, wasn't not a good choice, for the role, of BJ. One other thing--I'd like to mention, I also plan on buying the movie MASH, which the tv version, of MASH, is based on. Now,I've seen the movie MASH,and it's a great movie. As for theme song, on both the tv and movie versions, the title, of the theme,is "Suicide Is Painless". Now,concerning the movie version,of MASH,you can hear the words,to the theme song, being sung, and as for the tv version, the theme song,is instrumental. It has been while, since I last saw the movie version,of MASH, so I don't recall the words, to the theme song,"Suicide Is Painless",but what I do recall, is that the words, to the theme song, are very haunting and disturbing.

3 out of 5 stars Poor sound quality..........2007-01-23

First off, the 3 stars have nothing to do with how I feel about the show. I've always loved the series, the pre-Potter/Honeycutt episodes are my favorites. I wasn't a big fan after Frank Burns left the series. But enough of that, you know why you like MASH.
My problem is with the sound. I have to turn my TV up nearly full to be able to hear them. I know it's not my DVD player as I don't have to do this with other DVD's. You wouldn't expect to have to raise the volume so high with a DVD.
The picture quality is real good. There are a few spots where the I've experienced spots and frame freezes, but only a small few of the 16 out of 24 eppisodes I've watched.
Other than that it's a pretty good product so far.

<I>M*A*S*H</I> redux. Sign up for another stint with the 4077th. This three-disc set contains all 24 episodes from the superb second season (1973-74) of the series ranked by <I>TV Guide</I> as among the top 25 television shows of all time. The season opener, "Divided We Stand," is a deft reintroduction to these now iconic characters: bleeding-heart surgeon Hawkeye Pearce (Alan Alda in his signature role), kindred misfit spirit Trapper John (Wayne Rogers), clueless administrator Henry Blake (McLean Stevenson), buttoned-up Frank Burns (Larry Linville), and unbuttoned head nurse "Hot Lips" (Loretta Swit). In this episode, a visiting psychiatrist evaluates the 4077th to determine whether the unit "can function as a team." His evaluation can serve as this series' mission statement: "These impossible people are in an impossible place doing totally impossible things. They're mad--quite mad." <I>M*A*S*H</I> experienced no sophomore slump from its Emmy Award-winning first season. It continued to subvert sitcom convention with multiple-story episodes such as "Radar's Report." Scenes in the operating room play without a laugh track (this DVD gives viewers the option of watching entire episodes minus the intrusive chuckles and guffaws). <I>M*A*S*H</I> also tackled such issues as racism ("Dear Dad... Three," "L.I.P.--Local Indigenous Personnel"), homophobia ("George"), and war atrocities (Hawkeye and Trapper try to get the Army to take responsibility for the accidental shelling of a South Korean village). Not that <I>M*A*S*H</I> forgot how to be funny. "Five O'Clock Charlie" and "For Want of a Boot" are strictly for laughs. Hawkeye and Hot Lips memorably exchange flu shots in "Carry On, Hawkeye." Loyal viewers will note the emergence of several supporting characters, including Jamie Farr's Klinger and William Christopher's Father Mulcahy. One also sees the (to some) unfortunate transformation of Gary Burghoff's savvy, crackerjack clerk Radar into a naïve innocent. Allan Arbus makes his first appearance as compassionate psychiatrist Dr. Sidney Friedman in "Radar's Report." This second-season set is representative of why <I>M*A*S*H</I> was a cut above. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

Description

After a first season in which M*A*S*H barely rated among television's top fifty shows, the show received a boost in its second season when CBS switched their time slot to Saturday nights right after "All in the Family." <P>Knowing a lot of new people would be tuning in to the second season, creator/writer Larry Gelbart reveals, "We wrote the first episode as a sort of second pilot to introduce all the new viewers to the characters." Almost immediately after the second season began, the show became a hit—and the actors became household names. <P>Little did they know the show was going to last longer than the war itself.

5 out of 5 stars Far More Depth, Laughter, & Diversity Than Season 1........2007-02-19

Qualitywise the second season saw a huge improvement in the scripts & the total consistency of the series. "Hawkeye," was clearly the heart & Soul of the show. Larry Linville was exceptional as the awful snitch Major Frank Burns, who did not appear to have any redeeming qualities. He may be the most loathsome character on 1970's TV? Indeed, he & Major Houlihan's-Loretta Swit battles with Colonel Blake-McLean Stevenson, & Captains Hawkeye-Alan Alda, & Trapper John-Wayne Rogers respectively provided the bulk of the humorous plots. Episode-8, "The Trial Of Henry Blake," was exceptional. Here all the diverse characters blended their distinctly different natures into a fine ensemble. Other well balanced message based episodes were 19-"The Chosan People & 6-Kim." These two focused on the relationships between the local South Korean's & the Americans. The vignette types of episodes like "Dear Dad...Three, & Letters Home," added more balance & continuity, while the additions of recurring characters like compassionate Psychiatrist Sidney Freedman-Allan Arbus & Paranoid Colonel Flagg-Ed Winter {the latter being a brave version of Frank Burns with a Hero complex}, widened the breadth & depth of the season. For me, "The Incubator," was the funniest episode of the season. Trapper & Hawkeye go to great lengths in pursuit of an Incubator for the 4077. They run into burauecracy, corruption, & incompetance along the way. This season had it all. Heartbreaking poignancy, moral outrage, growing characters, & hilarity.

A superior, made-for-cable film, this Home Box Office adaptation of Randy Shilts's chronicle detailing the emergence of AIDS in America and the fight against bureaucracy and society for a cure is a taut, outrageous, and affecting true-life drama. Matthew Modine (<I>Birdy</I>, <I>Married to the Mob</I>) is featured as a doctor with the Centers for Disease Control at the time when the first reports of a disease plaguing the gay community were heard. Modine and his colleagues embark on an investigation that resembles a compelling detective story as they try to track the source of the disease and discover a cure. Their efforts are thwarted by an ambivalent government and a turf war between French physicians and a celebrated American researcher (Alan Alda) who seems to place his own glory above the dead and the dying. Featuring heartfelt performances from a stellar cast including Richard Gere, Glenne Headly, Anjelica Huston, Steve Martin, Ian McKellen, Saul Rubinek, and Lily Tomlin, this impassioned film stands as an impressive and important document of one of the darkest eras in modern human history, and a tribute to the spirit of those who sought to save lives. <I>--Robert Lane</I>

5 out of 5 stars And the Band Played On Played it RIGHT!.......2007-06-17

I saw the movie first and I cried. To think that millions of people had to die,( or at the time thousands)before someone would get off the pot and do something. I read the book afterward, many times and was moved even further. We're not out of the woods yet, but we're a heck of a lot further along than we were...THANK GOD! Randy Shilts would be pleased at the screen adaptation of his book!

4 out of 5 stars This is a weird movie.......2007-05-11

primarily because it doesn't take a stance. It argues neither in favor of the homosexual rights groups most heavily hit by AIDS at first, nor Reagan and the Republican Party who refused to allow AIDS to enter the media- it demeans such tenants of modern science as the scientific method and its inherent refusal to practice medicine off emotionalism while having a lot of fun giving people who work off emotionalism grief. It's one long, tortuous "I told you so."

However, everything else about the movie excelled enough to compensate. The actors, choreography, music, filming, and directing more than make up for a script centered heavily around "Whose fault is it?" And keep in mind- the subject is AIDS in the 1980s, when inaction made a disaster a pandemic. Maybe we should be asking "Whose fault is it?"

4 out of 5 stars Good Movie.......2007-02-01

The movie was for my 11th and 12th grade classes to see how and when the HIV/AIDS was brought to national attention. Very interesting and good movie. The movie proves that AIDS has no boundaries on those who suffer from the disease. Education is our best ally.

5 out of 5 stars very educational.......2007-01-09

i bought this movie for a friend, she is doing a paper on aids, and it was very helpful to her,a great cast very well done

5 out of 5 stars And The Band Played On.......2007-01-05

I have read the book and found that the movie followed the content. It was interesting to find out how money was more important the saving lives. This movies is interesting, factual, and will ellist a strong reponse from any one that watches it. It is not a movie for children.

<p clear=left> <img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/video/stills/aviator-01_m.jpg" align= "left" border="0"> From Hollywood's legendary Cocoanut Grove to the pioneering conquest of the wild blue yonder, Martin Scorsese's The Aviator celebrates old-school filmmaking at its finest. We say "old school" only because Scorsese's love of golden-age Hollywood is evident in his approach to his subject--Howard Hughes in his prime (played by Leonardo DiCaprio in his)--and especially in his technical mastery of the medium reflecting his love for classical filmmaking of the studio era. Even when he's using state-of-the-art digital trickery for the film's exciting flight scenes (including one of the most spectacular crashes ever filmed), Scorsese's meticulous attention to art direction and costume design suggests an impassioned pursuit of craftsmanship from a bygone era; every frame seems to glow with gilded detail. And while DiCaprio bears little physical resemblance to Hughes during the film's 20-year span (late 1920s to late '40s), he efficiently captures the eccentric millionaire's golden-boy essence, and his tragic descent into obsessive-compulsive seclusion. Bolstered by Cate Blanchett's uncannily accurate portrayal of Katharine Hepburn as Hughes' most beloved lover, The Aviator is easily Scorsese's most accessible film, inviting mainstream popularity without compromising Scorsese's artistic reputation. As compelling crowd-pleasers go, it's a class act from start to finish. --Jeff Shannon

<b>DVD Features</b>
In his commentary track, director Martin Scorsese offers his own impressions of Howard Hughes and rattles off his memories of experiencing Hughes's films. He mentions how he made Cate Blanchett watch every Katharine Hepburn film from the '30s on the big screen, and observes that Kate Beckinsale had "a real sense of the stature of a Hollywood goddess." But in general he doesn't talk much about the craft of making the film. That area is covered better by editor Thelma Schoonmaker, who also appears on the commentary track, and producer Michael Mann makes a few appearances (all were recorded separately). The picture is brilliant, but the 5.1 sound is not as aggressive in the rear speakers and subwoofer as one might expect, other than some nice surround effects in the <I>Hell's Angels</I> flying sequence.

The second disc collects almost three hours of features. There's one unnecessary deleted scene, and an 11-minute making-of featurette that's basically the cast and director heaping praise on each other. More interesting are the short featurettes on visual effects (including the XF-11 scene, of course), production design, costumes, hair and makeup, and score, and Loudon Wainwright discusses his and his children's musical performances. Historical perspective is provided by spotlights on Hughes's role in aviation and his obsessive-compulsive disorder, and a 43-minute Hughes documentary from the History Channel (part of the Modern Marvels series, it focuses on his mechanical innovations and spends less than a minute on his movies). More unusual are DiCaprio and Scorsese's appearance on an OCD panel, and a half-hour interview segment DiCaprio did with Alan Alda. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>

5 out of 5 stars A film that takes flight and soars above the rest..........2007-06-22

It took me a while to see `The Aviator' since word from my friends and family was that the running time was exhausting. While they have some reason to feel that way personally I feel that the film is so well put together that it more than makes the running time worth while. Leonardo DiCaprio is at his best here and delivers an award worthy performance as the legend Howard Hughes. Martin Scorsese delivers as well, directing powerhouse performances with great effects and amazing storytelling capacity. `The Aviator' truly is a mesmerizing biopic and is probably, but don't quote me on this, the best of the bunch to be released in `the year of the biopic'.

The film gracefully covers most of Hughes adult life, exposing his love life and his business escapades not to mention his quarks and obsessions. Along the way we are introduced to some of Hollywood's most elite, from Katherine Hepburn, played magnificently by Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, to Jean Harlow and Ava Gardner. His relationships with these women is dissected, mostly when it comes to Hepburn, and the chemistry between both DiCaprio and Blanchett is so effortless that it makes the whole experience comfortable and believable to the viewer.

The film, as is apparent by the title, focuses in large part on Hughes obsession with aviation, but it's his other strange obsessions that make a great canvas for DiCaprio's in-depth and articulate performance. I've always known that there was a great actor underneath those pretty boy looks and thankfully Leonardo took advantage of that when he took this role on full speed ahead. The way that he delves deep into the madness that overtook Hughes was pure genius, and the way he was able to keep his head, making it believable as apposed to over the top, his commendable and noteworthy.

The supporting cast including John C. Reilly, Alec Baldwin, Gwen Stefani, Kate Beckinsale and Jude Law is very impressive, and everyone is on key, but none so much as Alan Alda who plays Senator Brewster, the enemy as you could label him. The court hearings towards the end of this film where Brewster and Hughes square off are exciting and real and they really show the brilliance of these two actors. Watching them debate back and forth is so effortless it transcends acting. It's actually, don't take this wrong, beautiful to watch.

Scorsese really outdoes himself here, combining a great true life story with a powerful script that does it's best to flesh out a man who had a lot to uncover, not to mention the fantastic acting and fluid chemistry, making `The Aviator' one of the must see movies of the given year. I remember watching it and wondering how anyone could walk away feeling indifferent. Sure, it's not perfect, but it's one of the best films of the year and surely one of the best showcases for pure acting genius. Scorsese and company is truly to be commended for delivering one great work of art.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Work of Art.......2007-05-02

One of the greatest compliments to any film, IMHO, is when it can be called a great work of art. And this one is just that, a great work of art. Leonardo DiCaprio was great, as usual, in this film. I've read, in some places, that the film took a few liberties with facts about Hughes, but it's still a great film. It also highlights the rather unknown facts of Hughes' excentricities, OCD, which can be devastating for some, and greatly misunderstood by those around them. But the art and craftwork that went into creating the period are just fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Come Fly with Hughes, Scorsese and Di Caprio (4.5 stars).......2007-04-25

"The Aviator" carries more similarities with earlier Martin Scorsese's masterpiece -- "The Raging Bull" -- than might be obvious at first viewing. Both the aviator and film producer Howard Hughes (Leonardo di Caprio) and the boxing pro champ Jake LaMotta (Robert de Niro in the 1980 movie) achieved much in their lives, but were prevented to reach even higher heights -- partly due to their own mistakes, partly due to circumstances that were against them. But the most striking similarity between the two films lies in the way Scorsese masterfully injected them with understated compassion with the characters -- Interestingly, even the names of the two Scorsese's favorite actors are similarly Italian.

There are some differences, too. While Jake LaMotta's demons are an integral part of the film and its events, Howard Hughes' mental illness does not really carry the film forward and is the main reason why "The Aviator" feels a little too long. But not too long, rest assured. You can devour it, time flies with it -- so irresistibly watchable this is. Also due to the stellar cast headed by di Caprio. And the word to Cate Blanchett -- when Katharine Hepburn, so far the only actress (or actor, for that matter) who owns 4 acting Oscars, passed away at 96 in 2003, it could not occur to many that in just a year there will be such a great incarnation of HERSELF on film.

Blanchett earned the Oscar of her own for this role and the film got four more statues, but the most prestigious ones went to Clint Eastwood's sombre and more intimate "Million Dollar Baby". Indeed, "The Aviator" has not as high emotional resonance as some other big prize winners and as such does not stay with you for days after you see it, but solely for its sheer, classy filmmaking craft it easily ranks among the best works of the century so far.

5 out of 5 stars TWA - - The Way of the Future!!! All aboard!!!.......2007-04-23

Wow.... just got done watch the Aviator, and that is one word I can absolutely describe the movie. The picture/scenes, for a minute I thought I was watching HD, but it was only 420p. I had to rub my eyes because I thought I was robbing HD :). Anyways, this movie by far, on a scale of 1 to 10. This movie is hmmm let me think a second, forget it, it breaks the SCALE! I couldn't believe my eyes through out the whole movie. Leo playing Howard, and here I thought he did an amazing job (which he did) in Blood Diamonds, but WOW!! Leo did an unbelievable acting job. At times, I was like, this is Howard Hughes!! Wow! The determination of Howard. The passion of Howard. The unwilling to give up on his Goal! Leo definitely brought out in Howard! It was shear entertainment! RENT ATLEAST! Just get to know Howard through Leo! But not be everything accurate of Howard, but you get the gist. I bought it and it was well spent, for $4? Come on! I just robbed someone! It was a great bargain!! I would give this movie 10 stars, 20 stars, no amount of stars would justify how great this movie was overall. I am impressed with the man that is called "Mr. Howard." The rest of the cast was just as good.... but Leo, wow, I felt like it was a one man show and it was him trying to let me to get to know who Mr. Howard was. And his eccentrics, felt so sorry for him especially at the end all naked with a bunch of tissue warzone. It undoubtablely (if thats even a word) the movie one have to watch. Great Job, Leo, might of not won an Oscar, but you definitely deserve an ovation of a great performance! RENT THIS MOVIE! OR BUY IT! Either way . . . you WIN!!!! :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing movie!.......2007-04-11

I knew nothing about Howard Hughes before watching the movie, and I think this movie did a good job of introducing me to this historical figure. DiCaprio did an amazing job, his acting talents never cease to amaze me! Wonderful movie!

Like <I>Schoolhouse Rock</I>, Marlo Thomas's 1970s children's TV show, <I>Free to Be… You and Me</I> met with immediate success and became a treasured piece of entertainment over the years. Based on her award-winning album of songs, skits, and comedy, <I>Free to Be</I> explores the infinite possibilities of childhood. Fans know most of the skits in the 45-minute show verbatim, and it's easy to see why right from the beginning with an infectious title track followed by a puppet sketch featuring Thomas and Mel Brooks as newborns. Top talent appears on both sides of the camera, including Alan Alda who directs and performs a cartoon about a boy who wants a doll. However, the presentation does show its age at times: a teenage Michael Jackson singing (with Roberta Flack) on how he's not going to change when he grows up. For all ages. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

3 out of 5 stars Sadly dated, get the CD.......2007-05-12

I vaguely recall bits and pieces of video from my childhood, but it was still a bit of a shock when I got the DVD. The CD seems unfortunately timeless, but the DVD looks very very dated. Some of the animations (e.g. "Atalanta" and "William's Doll") aren't too bad, but the rest is too 70s. Get the CD instead, you'll be much happier.

5 out of 5 stars Stands the test of time.......2007-03-24

Kids loved this. Girls 7 (first grade) and 5 (pre k) and son 2 yrs. We moved from a very relaxed, well funded, full of arts school district to across the world, heavily congested, low funded little to standard art school district. Found the transition from fun sunny friends to competitive relatively unhappy community tough. This video really helped my 7 year old see her diversity in a soft and soothing way, believe it helped her move. Kids loved it for the entertainment value too. I swear I heard their brains blooming open with possibilities when they watched this. I loved the retro revisiting my childhood of it. It was a lot shorter than I remember it, which is handy for rewatching.

4 out of 5 stars Fun for me, and my 2 yr. old.......2007-02-10

I knew this stuff from the album, but hadn't ever seen the TV show. It is dated...cartoon unicorns flying off a carousel in Central Park. And unfortunately the video quality was obviously mediocre to start with. But it is fun, and the humorous parts are enduring. The songs are great too, as you'd remember if you were young when this came out...

I left my 2 yr old this morning on the couch watching the puppet babies (Mel Brooks and Marlo T) doing the I AM A BOY/GIRL thing--she had a big smile on her face..

5 out of 5 stars heartwarming.......2007-02-06

It is so nice to hear this music again! My daughter enjoys it immensely and it'll be so nice to both be able to be nostalgic about it someday. I love that they're putting these shows from my youth onto DVD so she can enjoy them also.

Sure, it's dated, and not a lot of kids know who Rosie Greer is. But, if you don't love it for the simple childhood "niceness" factor, rent it for the kitsch factor -- a young Michael Jackson is a hoot!

4 out of 5 stars Good but could be better.......2007-06-17

I was a bit disappointed that for the price of this set, that there was no information about which shows were on it, no booklet...etc...It was really well done as far as quality, but I really would have enjoyed being able to read a little something about each show. Also there is no way to contact whoever made this set to see if they will be making more shows available...my favorite episode ( The Thin White Line) where Todd is given LSD, was not on this set...I have tried ordering the entire series on DVD just to be told it is back ordered, or not available after paying over $100.00 for it, so this set is great to have....

5 out of 5 stars Route 66 - A Classic Show Done Right..........2007-06-10

Although this is not the "offical DVD release" from Columbia House, Roxbury Entertainment did an EXCELLENT job transferring these from the original broadcast film negatives. These 11 episodes are by far the best quality transfers out there. We can only hope that when Columbia "figures it out" to release the entire series on DVD, they'll do the same. There's nothing like watching an Episode of Route 66 with the original commercials, bumpers, sponsor tags and previews intact, it transports you back (for an hour) to a time when quality television prevailed.

5 out of 5 stars Route 66 episodes that are sharp and clear....!!!.......2007-06-08

I highly recommend this 2 disk DVD set of Route 66. The 11 episodes are very clear which makes all the difference. In the past, people have sold tapes or disks of Route 66 where they were just copies of copies and the picture quality was terrible! Not here. So if you grew up watching Route 66 or you love the series, this is the DVD disk you'll want to own. The collection of the 11 episodes are a fine representation of the series and they span across all four years of the show. On some of the episodes the orginial commericals are not edited out, but I did not mind that at all. As a matter of fact, it was rather enjoyable to see the espisodes as they were shown back in the 1960's. Some of my friends got a big kick out of the old commericals. I hope more Route 66 are coming in this format! Please make more!!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of The Best.......2007-06-06

This is Route 66 at it's very best!! The transfers are straight from the masters with everything left in like they originally aired. Commercials, Next week previews, etc. The studios will not release the classics shows this way as they should. 90 percent of the people that buy these classics shows are collectors. And they want everything left in! The studios don't get it! Nor do they care! It's their way or no way! This is the real way to preserve are Television History! Thanks Roxbury Entertainment! We salute you and want more soon!! Don't think about it!, Buy it! This is truly "THE BEST OF THE BEST".

It must've made for a great pitch meeting: Male chauvinist advertising executive gains the ability to hear the thoughts of any woman around him. Add Mel Gibson--as Nick, the divorced "man's man" who can charm almost any woman into bed--and you've got high-concept comedy made in Hollywood heaven, right? Not necessarily. The smartest thing director Nancy Meyers did with <I>What Women Want</I> is dispose of this ludicrous plot contrivance before it wears out its welcome. It's fun to see Mel react to a deafening chorus of female thoughts, but his dubious "gift"--courtesy of an accidental electro-shock in his bathtub--is a mixed blessing for the audience. The women in Nick's life conveniently think in complete sitcom-friendly sentences, and the novelty quickly wears thin.

The movie improves by focusing on the fallout of Nick's predicament. Exploiting his unfair advantage, he sabotages the career of his new boss (Helen Hunt) even as he's falling in love with her; says all the right things to the aspiring actress (Marisa Tomei) who previously spurned his advances; and uses mind reading to curry favor with his 15-year-old daughter (Ashley Johnson). This two-faced scheming isn't malicious, however, and <I>What Women Want</I> is blessed by Gibson's amiably nuanced performance. His graceful riff on Fred Astaire is a dazzling surprise, and as Nick reforms, Gibson takes major credit for whatever depth this movie achieves. After a bit of nonsense, <I>What Women Want</I> has a lot to say about male <I>and</I> female behavior, be it noble or unappealing. It's both amusing and truthful, and that's almost as fun as a glimpse into someone else's brain. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars Adorable movie with a classic flair.......2007-06-17

This is a charming movie with a great soundtrack and superb acting by Mel Gibson and Marisa Tomei. Gibson reaches a peak of comedic genius in the movie, playing funny and compassionate moments with equal skill. Although the movie's premise is rather absurd--a man who can hear women's thoughts after accidentally electrocuting himself in the bathroom--the viewer suspends disbelief and is drawn into the plot. Marisa Tomei is hilarious as the ditzy coffee shop girl. Delta Burke and Valerie Perrine, as well as Bette Midler, all have minor roles and are great in them. Mark Feuerstein as Gibson's buddy is also excellent. Some of the funny lines get a laugh from me every single time I watch (e.g., "The poodle give you that one?"). I loved the music, which included songs by Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin, Cole Porter, and more. This is a romantic comedy, and although I find it hard to see Helen Hunt as a vulnerable, romantic leading lady--I think of her more as the sardonic and not terribly feminine shrew in "Mad About You"--I thought she acted well in the movie and even worked in some "cupcake"-type moves. I love the movie and have watched it over and over, but I really think she is the one character I would have cast differently; I just do not think of her as feminine and sweet like her character in the movie, and that troubles me a bit when I watch it. This is a DVD whose extra features are worth watching, particularly director Nancy Meyers' comments on how the movie was made. This movie is a keeper that marries the modern dilemmas of romance with the feel of romantic comedies from the 40s and 50s. Mel Gibson's dance scene and the scene where he waxes his leg are outstanding, and he is entirely believable as the chauvinistic playboy who is shocked at what women think. If you want to have fun watching a movie, this is the one for you.

5 out of 5 stars Great rapport between Mel Gibson and Helen Hunt . . . .......2007-01-22

This is a funny movie--Mel Gibson is so cute and Helen Hunt is great as the new boss in town. As I was watching this, I couldn't imagine any other actor playing Mel Gibson's role--he has a great self-deprecating sense of humor. Highly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars i bet it's real stupid,.......2006-07-29

i have not seen this movie, nor do i EVER want to. i've only seen the previews on tv and read about it in previews. why do i think it's probably one of the stupidest, pointless movies on the face of the earth?, because i bet just about every guy who's had trouble getting girls watched it, took notes, and believed each and every single thing that was in this movie, and believed every sentence that was in this movie where you got to hear the woman thinking out loud in the movie. i bet many guys took this movie way too seriously.

well, i bet some of the stuff said in there where it has the woman thinking out loud was garbage. not all women are the same, and not all men are the same... you can't believe every thing a woman says. not all women want what that one individual woman wants and some women lie. but hey, nobody's perfect. every guy had individual tastes too, and guys lie sometimes to.

i for one, as far what i finad sexually appealing with a woman's appearance, like women who are a tad bigger. i like'em to weigh about 140 to 160 lbs. if they're around 5'5" to 5'7". yet there are guys who like petite women(i personlly don't know why).

there shouldn't be a movie that tries to help guys get girls. the movie title "what women want" was just wrong. i bet many guys thought of it as the gateway to seriously improving their game if they're looking for a date.

i personally think guys put way too much emphasis on trying to find out what women want. i don't think that should be necessary. i think it's ridiculous. i think the guy should be himself like the girl is practially all the time and just feel good about himself. not every girl is going to be into every guy... i think self-confidence is probably the most important thing for a guy to have when trying to get women.

i'm a guy and that's my opinion....

4 out of 5 stars What Women Want....Does Anyone Really Know?.......2006-07-23

This is pretty much the typical romantic comedy, but with an interesting twist; the main character has the ability to hear womens thoughts. The important thing was that for it to work, the character would be placed in a lot of interesting comical situations, where you could laugh at it, without it being too mocking of womens thoughts, or too far-out to enjoy. It succeeds pretty well, however the way the character gains and loses the ability were handled somewhat poorly. The humor is good, and there is plenty of it, throughout the entire runtime. The characters were believable, and the main character eventually grew to be likable. The plot was good, and the acting likewise. The only thing that brings the movie down, is the poor execution of the gain/loss of the ability to hear womens thoughts, and the sugar-sweet ending, that was too predictable and plain boring, as anyone who's seen one of the hundreds of romantic comedies out there. No actual new stuff brought to the table, apart from the interesting and original concept of a man being able to hear what women are thinking.
I enjoyed the movie thoroughly and enjoyed the humor. The film was filled with talented acting, laughs, and lighthearted suspense. It would be a good recommendation for anyone who is bored and desires a humorous, fun movie. The idea of a man being able to read women's minds is clever and amusing. Should this ever happen, would it be classified as a gift, or a nightmare?

Along with <I>Deconstructing Harry</I> which would follow seven years later, this is Woody Allen's most somber comedy-drama, as well as his most ambitious film of the 1980s. Allen weaves together two central stories about very different groups of Manhattanites, linking them through a mutual friend, a rabbi (Sam Waterston) who's going blind. This image is key to the sometimes ponderous, often clever musings on faith, morals, and vision (or lack thereof) that obsess his deeply troubled and unhappy characters. At its center, the film explores people who, through lack of religious conviction or arrogance, rationalize their awful, selfish acts by presuming that God couldn't possibly be watching.

The central story--a neo-noir of sorts--follows a fortuitous ophthalmologist (Martin Landau, all sweat and grimaces) who faces the prospect of his obsessed mistress (Anjelica Huston) ruining his life by telling his family of their affair. Desperate, the doctor hires his slimy criminal brother (Jerry Orbach) to eliminate the situation, and then suffers overwhelming regret afterwards. The flip tale is more typical Allen. Funnier and lighter, it focuses on an impossible romance between Allen's character and Halley Reed, a film producer played by Mia Farrow. Between Allen and his Hollywood fantasy stands his brother-in-law (Alan Alda, perfectly cast as an obnoxious, successful sitcom producer), who also desires Halley. Allen is Landau's opposite: an honest, struggling documentarian who cares nothing about fortune, suffers in a loveless marriage, and is surrounded by triumphant phonies. The nice-guys-finish-last moral may be as contrived as it is devastating. Yet, when Landau and Allen finally share a final scene during a wedding, their faces, subtle body movements, and contrasting fortunes somehow suggest that indeed God may be blind, and if not, the deity has a very sick sense of humor. <I>--Dave McCoy</I>

Description

"Poignant, penetrating [and] scathingly hilarious" (Long Beach Press Telegram), Crimes and Misdemeanors is a deftly rendered tale about the complexity of human choices and the moral microcosms they represent. Showcasing Allen's brilliant grasp of the link between the funny and the fatal, his 19th movie is "one of the watershed films of his career" (Los Angeles Times). Cliff Stern (Woody Allen) is an idealistic filmmaker until he's offered a lucrative job shooting aflattering profile of a pompous TV producer (Alan Alda). Judah Rosenthal (Martin Landau) is the pillar of his community until he learns that his ex-mistress (Anjelica Huston) plans to expose his financial and extramarital misdeeds. As Cliff chooses between integrity and selling out, and Judah decides between the counsel of his rabbi (Sam Waterston) and the murderous advice of his mobster brother (Jerry Orbach), each man must examine his own morality, and make an irrevocable decisionthat willchange everyone's lives forever.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars a long long time ago, woody allen made good movies.......2007-05-12

woody allens best film since the 70s (and hey this one was 18 years ago!) features great acting turns by martin landau, sam waterston, alan alda, angelica huston, jerry orbach, joanna gleason, claire bloom, and even the usually awful mia farrow (who it might be noted hasnt been cast by a real director she want sleepoing with in 30+ years). his nod to dostoevski (however you want to spell that guys name) is clear in both the title and theme, and for once (maybe its because he only plays a minor role) one of his his post-"manhattan" manhattan movies comes off as real instead of stilted.

5 out of 5 stars My favorite Woody Allen film.......2007-03-15

Simply put, a terrific movie and Allen's masterpiece. At once funny, troubling, romantic, hopeful, sad... Allen manages to both sypathize with and damn the characters in both stories. Interesting plot, truly great acting, and a screenplay that makes you think about the common themes of Allen's work (death, humor, love, identity, etc.) in new ways.

I'm writing this after years of watching and re-watching because I just saw Match Point, which horribly cribs this movie's characters and plot and marries them with bad acting and a terrible screenplay. Sadly, Match Point was heralded as Allen's best film in years. Wha?

5 out of 5 stars One of Woody's best.......2007-03-15

This is a superb film. In essence there are 2 main overlapping parts and few smaller subplots.
One part revolves around the guilt of Martin Landau, who has never been better. This section is Woody Allen in Bergman mode and doing it very well.
The second section is Alan Alda and Woody Allen fighting over Mia Farrow. This contains some classic Woody Allen lines which once heard you won't forget. Alan Alda's "If it bends its funny..." and "Comedy is tragedy plus time". Woody Allen finding out that Prof Levy (his hero and who he is making a TV docu about) has killed himself leaving a note that justs says "I've gone out the window".
The film comments on a number of very serious moral issues but still manages to be funny and entertaining at the same time. This is the DVD equivilent of the unputdownable book.

4 out of 5 stars the power of transgression.......2007-01-25

Judah Rosenthal boasts all the accomplishments of a successful ophthalmologist, but is wracked by the guilt and angst of having entangled himself in adultery, lies and murder. He realizes, as the film says toward the very end, that we "define ourselves by our moral choices." Meanwhile, Cliff Stern (Woody Allen) loses the love of his life, Halley (Mia Farrow), who falls for his wife's boorish brother, Lester (Alan Alda). Along the way, Allen's characters discourse on nearly all the important themes of life--love and sex, God and religion, marriage and family, work and calling. Some have hailed this as Woody Allen's best film.

5 out of 5 stars "Human happiness does not seem to be included in the design of creation..........2006-12-29

...If you want a happy ending, you should go see a Hollywood movie"

"Crimes and Misdemeanors" (1989)- is Woody Allen's masterpiece and my favorite film. It is urban and sophisticated, subtle and cruel. It is darker than dark and self-ironic. It is profound and touchingly poignant. It is deadly serious and in the same time it is incredibly funny. Its humor is razor sharp and sparkling and the best and funniest Woody's one-liners and comic performances belong here. As always in his best films, Allen had created a clever and elegant film out of his own weaknesses and insecurities and it shines. How much was Allen able to meditate on life, death, God, religion, morality, crimes and the responsibility, love and lust, happiness and the price one pays for it, and among those eternal subjects - how much fun it is to skip work or school and to sneak to the movies.

It is universal. It has the references to many Artists and cultures - Chekhov, Dostoyevsky, and Bergman among the others but it is so undeniably and uniquely Allen. It could not have been made by any other director.

It is the movie Allen will be remembered for.
