4 out of 5 stars "Baby, you're no good".......2007-05-27

William Katt, who was well known to me as the boyfriend to be in the horror film Carrie, has a chance to ham it up again with his Robert Redford grin. This time he has inherited a haunted creepy house from an aunt who committed suicide in one of the rooms.
This horror film cannot be taken seriously because it borderlines consistantly on the comedic angles.
One marvelous scene was when William Katt gets introduced to his new neighbor and tells him that he is now the new owner of the house. The neighbor gives a few rumoured details on the mental instability of the previous owner, to which William Katt declares the previous owner as his relative. The neighbor, who's watering his lawn goes "Heart of gold, though. . . a saint really."
Funny stuff like this is what keeps the movie going, and the creepy moments remain just that, with my favorite monster being the flying demon behind the broken bathroom mirror wall with a love for shotgun.

5 out of 5 stars My child hood.......2007-05-07

I saw this movie years ago when i was younge, and i forgot how entertaining it was. It brought me back to myyouth and home town. It was everything i find to be compforting and a walk in my past.
For all those out there who miss the way they use to feel when they were younge I strongly suggest finding that specail movie or movies that can take you back.

5 out of 5 stars It was the house that did it..........2007-04-11

This movie is great! I loved it when i was a kid and it's still good now. The action isn't none stop and theres not a ton of gore but the action and monsters in the movie are awesome! and good music too!of the two "House" movies this is by far the more serious one but if you like it i recommend the 2nd!

5 out of 5 stars gift for mother in law.......2007-03-08

I purchased this as a gift for my mother in law. It was a big hit with her. I must confess I have even watched it a couple of times. Very funny and something different.

4 out of 5 stars Not bad.......2006-11-10

If you are looking for a scare but also for some comedy, this is the film for you. The movie isn't gory (like most horror movies are), so don't worry about that here. Sit back, turn off the lights and prepare for a good at home movie. Enjoy!

One of the overlooked films of the 1980s, perhaps because it is such a downbeat tale of an amoral family. Sean Penn plays a kid whose small-time criminal impulses are stoked to a new level when he falls in with his father (Christopher Walken), a vicious career criminal for whom no problem is so large that it can't be solved by a murder. At first exhilarated by the attention from his father (and the jobs he gives him to do), he gradually catches on to just what a bad guy Dad really is. But when he tries to extricate himself, he discovers that Dad now has him squarely in his sights. Penn is terrific in a role of emotional complexity, while Walken, king of the creeps, is positively frightening as this soft-spoken but highly lethal patriarch. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

even with Sean Penn involved, you will not be able to take your eyes and ears off the great C. Walken as he plays this heartless, yet intelligent and interesting creep. i am a huge Walken fan and this is my favorite role. he even throws in a little ballet move in a warehouse scene as an ode to his dancing days. if you have seen Walken's actors studio thing, he talks about the kitchen scene w/ S.Penn. It's Great. check it out.

5 out of 5 stars BEST OF TRUE CRIME - Unbelievable DYSFUNCTIONAL family!.......2006-09-26

I love movies based on true crime and this is one of my favorites. The soundtrack is the song by Madonna "Live to Tell." It goes "A man can tell a thousand lies - I've learned my lesson well - Hope I live to tell -The secret I have learned, 'til then - It will burn inside of me." I always thought this song was about "a girl done wrong" until I saw this movie. It must refer to the relationship between Brad, Jr. (Sean Penn) and his father (Christopher Walken). If you think that your family is dysfunctional, WAIT until you watch this movie! Ooops almost forgot, Sean Penn looks great in a tight t-shirt! YUM!

5 out of 5 stars Absolute knockout.......2006-06-05

Holy cow, what a great movie! I completely missed it until I saw it on IFC (I think), and just caught a few minutes in the middle out of curiousity. I set my alarm and watched it all the way through the next showing, which was like 2AM, it grabbed me that much. How did this not garner some awards? It's not even mentioned on Reelviews, though to his credit Ebert did give it a mostly positive review at the time. A backlash against Madonna/Penn, one of those Ben/Lo notorious Hollywood couples that fall out of favor? It happens sometimes, needless to say.

What also should be mentioned is the unique way "Live to Tell" is used in the film. It's not just on the soundtrack, it is the soundtrack. Having just a few chords from one song permeate an entire film is risky, and could be a real mess, but it works extremely well here. The song has been called "haunting", well that's certainly true in this context, it provides just the right note to the material. Outstanding all the way around.

4 out of 5 stars A tug-of-war between father and son in a small town with no opportunities other than crime.......2006-02-21

At Close Range, which is based on a true-crime story from the 1980's, centers on the relationship between Brad Jr. (Sean Penn) and Brad Sr. (Christopher Walken). The younger Brad has a mess of a life, has no direction, and lives with his mom and a boyfriend who resents her pot-smoking grown children. Along with his brother Tommy (played by Penn's real-life brother, Chris Penn), Brad Jr. turns to his dad as a father-figure for an intro to the family business of small-time crime. Tensions run high has Brad Jr. is forced to faced the true demon his father is, and Brad Sr. has no qualms about hurting or murdering anyone, including Tommy (the bastard son) and his own son's girlfriend.

The is a gritty movie with great questions about family ties and what to do with your life when you have no real options. Most of the cast was relatively unknown at the time, so check out actors like Kiefer Sutherland, Crispin Glover, and Mary Stuart Masterson at the beginning of the careers.

More than merely <I>Deliverance</I> in the Louisiana bayou, Walter Hill's taut little tale of weekend-warrior National Guardsmen on swamp exercises reverberates with echoes of Vietnam. Powers Booth brings a hard pragmatism to the "new guy" in the unit, a Texas transplant less than thrilled with his new group. "They're just Louisiana versions of the same rednecks I served with in El Paso," he tells the levelheaded Keith Carradine.

The barely functional unit of city boys and macho rednecks invades the environs of the local Cajun trappers and poachers, "borrowing" the locals' boats and sending bursts of blank rounds over their heads in a show of contempt. Before they know it the dysfunctional strangers in a strange land are on the losing end of a guerrilla war. The swamp rats kill their commanding officer (Peter Coyote) and terrorize the bickering bunch as they flee blindly through the jungle without a map, a compass, or a leader to speak of.

Hill directs with a clean simplicity, creating tension as much from the primal landscape and the Cajuns' unsettling reign of terror as from the dynamics of a platoon of battle virgins tearing itself apart from rage and fear. Ry Cooder's eerie and haunting score and the primal, claustrophobic landscape only intensifies the paranoia as the city boys splinter with infighting (sparked by a bullying Fred Ward), blunder through booby traps and ambushes, and finally turn just as savage as their pursuers in their drive to survive. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

Description

From the director of The Long Riders comes this eye-widening, gut-wrenching tale of backwoods terror that draws you into the eerily beautiful Louisiana bayou...then has you running for your life (Pauline Kael, New Yorker)! Keith Carradine, Powers Boothe and Peter Coyote lead a first-rate ensemble (Newsweek) in this exciting, arresting and tautly told suspenser (Variety). When nine National Guardsmen enter the Louisiana swamp for routine training, they are unaware that just a handful of their ranks will make it out alive. Through an error in judgment, they incite an all-out war with some angry Cajuns who know the territory like the backs of their hands. Armed with a precious few bullets, and confused by the dimly lit, moss-covered maze into which they ve stumbled, the innocent guardsmen know they'll be picked off one-by-one...until they come up with a solution using the only resources they have left'themselves.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars It's SOUTHERN DISCOMFORT.......2007-06-22

If you have watched Platoon, you'll see a great similarity here. The plot was about a group of soldiers killed one by one by unseen enemies. In Platoon, it's the Viet Cong who killed the American soldiers. In Southern Comfort, it's the Cajuns who murdered the National Guardsmen.

What supposed to be a suspenseful movie turned out to be a bland picture. The acting look stiff, fake and unemotional. I was never scared during the whole film. In one scene, a Guardsman, was so frightened that he went crazy. He cut and painted himself just like an Indian who was going to war. And yet the act did not stir up any suspense or emotion at all. On the contrary, the similar scene in Predator is truly gripping.
I prefer The Hunt for Red October and U571. They're greatly suspenseful and entertaining.

If you want to watch this movie, please rent it. Do not buy it. The purchase of this DVD cost me only ten dollars but I still think it's a waste of money.

5 out of 5 stars Southern-Fried Film Noir.......2006-09-05

This film came out just as I was finishing a six-year stint with the Louisiana National Guard, so I eagerly went to see it soon after its release. I enjoyed it so much then that I bought a copy on DVD when reminded of it after I bought "Deliverance".
Though there are surface similarities, Southern Comfort is not Deliverance Louisiana-style, though it may have attracted much the same viewers.
I won't rehash the story to a great extent, but I want to point out a few errors in the film before singing its hosannahs. First of all, if the Guard unit started its exercise in the Catahoula swamp and was supposed to pass through the Great Dismal Swamp (they called it the Great Primordial Swamp in the film) to a rendezvous with another unit, there would have been precious few Cajuns as those swamps are north of the Red River. Most Cajuns live south of that river and west of the Mississippi. Secondly, the interstate which "Casper" kept referring to would have been Interstate 20, 100 miles to the north and they'd have crossed many other roads before that. The type of swamp the unit was in would be far more likely south of Interstate 10, 100 miles to the south of where the movie placed them. Finally, there would probably have been at least a couple of the troops who could speak Cajun French. My unit, based at Pineville LA, had a good mix of North Louisiana "rednecks" as Cajuns referred to them and South Louisiana "coon-asses" as the Cajuns called themselves. A lot of the Cajun guys were fluent in Cajun French. As for the troopers themselves, we did have one guy in our unit reminiscent of the wild-eyed punk in the film who got the real trouble started by firing blanks at the Cajun trappers, but beyond that they were a decent bunch of men and women.
With that straightened out, lets talk about the movie. This is a great story about men under stress, how they interact and how they respond to fear. Some keep their heads, some snivel and whine, while others go berserk. You have prototypes of all three in this film. Texas Guard transferee Powers Boothe is the most level-headed of the group, you somehow know that he is going to make it.
The Cajuns themselves are shown as pretty one-dimensional characters until the end, but that's because these particular Cajuns live life in the shadows and are involved in many activities of questionable legality. Only at the end, when Boothe and Carradine seemingly have saved themselves and find themselves in the middle of a real Mardi Gras, is the fun-loving devil may care side of the Cajun soul bared.
That one-armed Cajun trapper who was captured and tortured by the guardsmen spared Boothe and Carradine near the end and gave them directions out of the swamp, but probably only because Boothe had saved him from further torture and he recognised that both guardsmen were essentially decent men. But, as the trapper warns them, the others are not as nice as he is.
Apart from the unlikely storyline itself, you will be transfixed by this Southern-Fried Film Noir. You have people from the outside world pitted against an insular and seemingly peculiar minority. You have the unrelenting gloom of the setting, whether it be in the swamp and all its clues of impending doom, or at the bayou-side Mardi Gras with all sinister symbolism that keeps up the suspense and the viewer on edge. The dark and gloomy atmosphere is sustained by the brooding and mysterious soundtrack by Ry Cooder.
I heartily recommend Southern Comfort to anyone who enjoys dark action films, to those for whom the swamps of Louisiana stir a mixture of curiosity and dread, and for anyone who has not been to backwoods Louisiana who might like to see what a real Cajun party sans tourists may be like.

5 out of 5 stars A THRILLER WITH AN INTERESTING PREMISE!!.......2006-07-17

I highly recommend this film to fans of thrillers, as well as fans of action films! It was a suspenseful movie with lots of action and an interesting premise!
The movie keeps you waiting for what is going to happen next and makes you laugh a few times along the way.
Do yourself a favor and see this nerve-inducing thriller!!!

3 out of 5 stars Bought this for a dollar at Wal-Mart and was very happy.......2007-04-02

OK, no Oscar winner(or Emmy winner , as this was a T.V. mini-series) here but a very nice pre-CGI effects try at once again sending Los Angeles rolling around and destroying the dream factory. THe effects are not bad and the actors are very good and the 3 hours roll(sorry had to do it) by very well.

4 out of 5 stars Well-done disaster flick.......2007-03-08

Joanna Kerns, the lovable mom from Growing Pains, leads us through the "Big One" that hits Southern California. I admit that my penchant for disaster movies biases me, but The Great Los Angeles Earthquake provides a better-than-B-movie presentation of the destruction of L.A. The 'science' appeared convincing enough to bring me into the story. A cross between an educational after-school special and a prime-time disaster flick intended to grab market share, this movie adequately captures the drama surrounding the event, before, during, and after. The underlying storylines moves us through easily and credibly. The special effects certainly date this movie to some degree, but considering its own era, and the fact that the film was made for TV, the effects come off as convincing enough to repel laughter and instead draw in the audience into a horrible realism. I waited years for the movie to be placed on DVD. It's well worth the wait.

5 out of 5 stars The way a natural disaster flick is SUPPOSED to be!.......2007-01-22

This movie was so good, I don't think I could watch it again. This is not to knock the movie in any way, it's just my stomach isn't made for these movies. That said, the whole movie is very realistic, and the ending is not a feel good ending like Aftershock. So if you like these movies, strap yourself in.

4 out of 5 stars The Great Los Angeles Earthquake.......2007-01-03

Very prompt order receiving (unlike the ones I have waiting since 22nd December to receive directly from Amazon.com for textbooks). The movie was used by several students for reports due in a Natural Disasters class in college. We had to pick out what was "right" about the science and what was "wrong" about the science. This particular movie was mine to do so was very interested in it. It portrayed an earthquake on a real fault pretty good but what happens in earthquakes and the time it takes to get to people (or across town in a disaster) is unreal.

5 out of 5 stars Shake, rattle and roll with The Great Los Angeles Earthquake.......2006-10-31

Disaster movie fans will be happy to know that the DVD transfer of The Great Los Angeles Earthquake (originally titled The Big One: The Great Los Angeles Earthquake) appears to be a complete and uncut translation of the original miniseries that aired on NBC in 1990. For a made-for-TV movie, the special effects are outstanding, made even more incredible considering the lack of CGI at the time.

Some scenes and subplots cut from the VHS version and the version farmed out for syndication on local stations have been restored, most notably the assassination subplot (featuring Clarence Gilyard, Jr. and the late Brock Peters) and the original ending (featuring Dan Lauria).

The Big One is a better, more realistic disaster thriller than the later 10.5 and 10.5 Apocalypse that NBC most recently broadcast, and has better effects than CBS's more recent earthquake offering, Aftershock: Earthquake in New York, although that movie is pretty good. For the money, getting three hours worth of movie is a treat. Buy this movie!

A very savvy, 1978 film directed by Ted Kotcheff (<I>First Blood</I>) dealing with the seamier side of professional football. Phillip Elliott and Maxwell (Nick Nolte and Mac Davis, respectively) are players for a Texas football team loosely based on the championship Dallas Cowboys. Though at the peak of his football career, Elliott is a personal and physical mess, needing all manner of drugs prescribed by the team physician to play and even to move around. The indifference of the team management and the hypocritical stance toward recreational drug use versus the drug abuse practiced by the players leads to a crisis of conscience for Nolte. The combination of Nolte's volatile presence and Davis's understated performance as the quarterback who thinks he's seen it all helps make <I>North Dallas Forty</I> one of the best sports films around. --Robert Lane</I>

5 out of 5 stars The dark side of pro football.......2007-01-13

NORTH DALLAS FORTY is based on the semi-autobiographical book written by Michigan State's own Pete Gent. Gent played basketball @ MSU and went on to play Tight End for Tom Landry's Cowboys in the 1960s. The coach of the team in the movie is obviously a caricature of Landry in the way that he calls guys out in film sessions and mixes football with religion, computers, psychology and philosophy (not to mention some mind-games to boot!).

The crux of the film details what it's like to be an aging player in football. Once players get north of 30 they become much more dependent on shots and pain pills and have to watch their skills erode with each passing season. The movie depicts the devastating toll that football takes on even the most athletic bodies.

Nick Nolte plays a wide receiver who finds himself in just such a circumstance. He is fighting for his pro football life while younger players are trying to push him out of the league to make a place for themselves. He also is in the middle of politics being played out on multiple levels over who gets to play.

While this is a sports movie, we hardly get to see any "game" action at all. This is not a bad thing, just different. The basis of the movie centers around the "behind the scenes" issues of a pro football team.

If you like sports movies (especially football) you'll likely enjoy this one. Just so you know it's bound to not be as uplifting and cathartic as most sports films tend to be.

4 out of 5 stars Sad But True.......2006-03-02

I'm not a particularly big sports fan so I am not qualified to rate the football sequences of this film but by impression is that there is nothing wonderful about them. That's fine because they are beside the point. They are just an incidental part of the story. The real story is of the aging athletes.

Nick Nolte plays the receiver of the Dallas football team. He was great in his day and still has the talent but a life on the field has severely battered his body. He's having a hard time keeping up and, for the first time in his career, he is not a starter. That slot goes to some younger talent. He's at the age where his body and his love interest insist that he should retire. The problem is that he genuinely loves the game.

He has other problems as well. Most of the team are spoiled rotten and act little better than spoiled children. The team owner and the team coach are difficult to work for; they demand sacrifice of their players but are two faced and willing to permanently see them hurt in order to further other goals such as bringing along a newer player. Having your girlfriend catch the eye of the owner's brother is also something that tends to put a damper on either your professional career or your love life.

This was presented as a comedy and there are some light moments where the players are acting badly. They are, after all, getting paid millions to play a game. It is really about the human decisions, though. It is about making tough, personal choices and being willing to live with the consequences. It is about being willing to give up that which is important.

5 out of 5 stars Great insight to the past???.......2006-02-25

Hi

Really enjoy this film (the book was good to). It was nice to find this on DVD. no real extras but it is a really good film with some nice performanaces). It was one of the first US football films I ever saw and it has remained a favourite ever since

4 out of 5 stars A better halftime show than Janet Jackson.......2006-01-31

This is an unsparing, unsentimental look at pro football in which the players are alternately brutes, and slaves to management. Coaches shamelessly manipulate the players and then discard them the moment injury strikes; the players are drugged up in order to coax them onto the field, while at the same time the unpopular players are ensnared by drug charges in order to trap them at contract renegotiation time.

"North Dallas Forty" is probably one of my favorite sports movies, and definitely my favorite football movie. That's because of its defiant outsider approach -- "Ball Four", the baseball book that made Peter Gent's football novel possible, only ever wound up a lame sitcom; "North Dallas Forty" goes all the way. Even though the movie is based on the Dallas Cowboys of the 1960s, the instantly dated 1970s' filmmaking technique remains timeless (even if it's from the same director who made "Weekend at Bernie's", which is timeless for very different reasons).

Part of the movie's continuing appeal remains its cast. Nick Nolte is a brilliant lead, as the rebellious but honest-to-a-fault North Dallas wide receiver Phil Elliott. Phil tells it like it is and sees management for what they are, but doesn't realize he's being cheated out of his career until the third or fourth time he's been double-crossed by owners, coaches and friends alike.

Playing a riff on Dandy Don Meredith, country singer/songwriter Mac Davis plays sly quarterback Seth Maxwell. The rest of the football team is filled out with several ex-NFL players. John Matuszak's second acting career was launched by this movie, and Bo Svenson's football career should have been launched by this movie. The coaches, Charles Durning (as a cliche-spouting offensive coordinator) and the great G.D. Spradlin (playing a thinly veiled Tom Landry) both dominate their scenes. And yes, that's Dabney Coleman as an oil man and part owner who delivers one of the movie's best lines ("Do you speak Canadian?").

Dayle Haddon looks great as Phil's love interest, but otherwise gets overshadowed by the rest of the cast. She seems so disinterested in Phil throughout the movie that I was convinced their relationship wouldn't make it another week after the story ended.

Kotcheff directs his football scenes with an interesting approach that could never be duplicated today: there's not a single wide shot of a packed house, not a single closeup of a spectator in North Dallas face paint and a Maxwell jersey. Gone are the excesses of modern TV football coverage, and the only product endorsement I could spot was for xylocaine. Most of the early football action is shown in mute flashbacks, and the climactic game against Chicago is not joined until after the two-minute warning. Even with such minimal football, however, Kotcheff's action is so muddy, bloody and cruel that you can imagine the final game sequence was cued up in L.T.'s VCR the fateful Monday night he tangled with Joe Theismann's leg.

Always worth watching every late January, "North Dallas Forty" is one of those films you hope is never going to be remade, because the original has everything you need in a football movie.

5 out of 5 stars North Dallas Forty, a sports classic!.......2005-08-27

Even though it is a little dated by the football equipment and clothes of the era, the message of Pro football is resounded honestly and comically. The whole cast is awesome scene to scene, and do a great job keeping you laughing.

Pierce Brosnan, bloody and beaten and hysterically screaming in French, whispers a word, Innuat, into the ear of emergency-room physician Lesley-Anne Down and promptly dies. John McTiernan (<I>Die Hard</I>) knows how to kick off a movie, and his directorial debut, <I>Nomads</I>, shows a real flair for visual tension and eerie imagery. For reasons never explained, Down relives the final days of anthropologist Brosnan in mind-jolting flashes of memories that send her stumbling across L.A. and into the path of a demonic gang of black-leather punks (led by cult singer Adam Ant). McTiernan's ambition overreaches his abilities--the muddled story depends on smart people doing dumb things, and the hints of personalities merging in Down's tormented psyche remain frustratingly unexplored--but his sense of mood and mystery created solely out of suggestion is unerring. There's a fascinating movie lost in the confusion of this unsettling supernatural thriller. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

I received the movie within 7 days of ordering and I am overseas in Iraq. Was very pleased with the movie and the service

5 out of 5 stars One of those rare, very good supernatural thrillers!!.......2005-09-30

A renowned french anthropologist and his wife move to California - a kind of semi-retirement to teach at UCLA after years of field work with native peoples from all over the world. They move into their house and find that it has been vandalized by some local riffraff (goth-like young ruffians) driving around in a van.

The instincts of the anthropologist (Jean-Charles Pommier played by Pierce Brosnan) kick in and he's on their trail - the trail of the "Nomads".

Now most of the story is actually told through the mind/memory of a medical doctor (Lesley-Anne Down as Dr. Eileen Flax). She treats the anthropologist at the hospital when he is near death from violent injuries. (this happens at the beginning of the movie). Before he dies he communicates his soul/memory to her.

This movie is haunting, intelligent, beautifully directed - very well acted and last but not least - very interesting.

Just one very cool movie!!

5 out of 5 stars "You, They Know About You".......2005-04-28

"You, they know about you." This may be the most chilling line of dialogue ever delivered on film. It is the pivotal moment in the movie, the moment of realization that not everything we see is real. Whether we want to belief it or not, forces exist in the universe that we dismiss or ignore at our own peril.

Such is the moment of truth for Jean-Charles Pommier (Pierce Brosnan), a sophisticated, well respected anthropologist newly arrived in Los Angeles and about to embark on a new phase in his career as a professor of Cultural Anthropology at UCLA. After years of living in some of the most remote regions of the world studying the spiritual beliefs and customs of nomadic cultures, Jean-Charles is reluctant but willing to leave the spiritual cosmos of the 'primitive' for a better life with his wife in sunny California.

He soon discovers that things are no different in the urban sprawl of a major city than they are anywhere else. The very first day in their new home Pommier encounters a troublesome, unruly band of misfits driving around the neighborhood in a black van. Curious about their anti-social behavior he follows them about Westwood secretly taking notes and photos of their activities. His findings are unexpected and earthshattering. They are Nomads (hostile, wandering spirits), and his interest in them has now turned their attention in his direction. The hunter has become the hunted and poor Jean-Charles must attempt to flee from the Nomads before it's too late.

Wonderful performances abound in this film. Pierce Brosnan and Lesley-Anne Down (as Dr. Eileen Flax) are at their best in the lead roles, but it is the supporting cast that really takes this film to a higher level. Anna Maria Monticelli is absolutely beautiful as Pommiers' loving, vulernable wife while Jeannie Elias supplies a Streisandesque burst of energy and a little comic relief as the hardnosed, agnostic best friend of Dr. Flax. Frances Bay who delivers that crucial line of dialogue at the beginning of this review has a small but significant role that she plays to eerie perfection.

There are also amazing performances to be found by those in the role of the Nomads. They don't speak a word yet have the uncanny ability to create the most disquieting, otherworldly atmosphere with nothing more than a facial expression or gesture. They're absolutely mesmerizing. Adam Ant as "Number One", Mary Woronov as "Dancing Mary" and Hector Mercado as "Ponytail" are unforgetable.

Every movie fan knows that the soundtrack plays a major role in the success or failure of a film to create the appropriate mood, or elicit the desired emotional response from the audience. In 'Nomads' Bill Conti and Ted Nuggent have provided the perfect accompaniment, successfully capturing the angry, restless nature of these hostile entities in their hard-driving, discordant rhythms. Like an incessant, demonic heartbeat the thundering music and lyrics of Ted Nuggent coupled with the etheral, exotic sounds of Bill Conti envelope the viewer drawing them into the savage, archaic Underworld of the Nomads.

Departing from the usual action/adventure features he's so well known for, director John McTiernan delivers a stunning masterpiece of psychological, supernatural terror. Nomads is as near perfect as a movie could be. However I will admit if you're not familiar with the subject of territorial spirits or shamanic transference it might be difficult to follow. Without question, "Nomads" is my all-time favorite film!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, A Great Ride.......2005-01-27

I am so glad this is on DVD. I enjoyed Brosnan's excellent work in this film. A Superb French accent, and an amazing scene in the hospital.
The Mythos behind this film is excellent, eerie, and so haunting. Worth watching, and will, if you get right into it, inspire you to look up books on the Inuit.
This is a briliant, albeit low budget, supernatural /surreal thriller.
Well worth the watch, and may inspire you to see more in this type of genre.

4 out of 5 stars This one haunts me.......2004-02-05

I first saw this movie about 10 years ago on VHS. I could not watch it alone or in one sitting. It scared the stuffing out of me. No, it doesn't serve up every answer neat and clean, it forces you to think. I don't care much for Adam Ant as a musician, but I think his casting here as an evil entity was inspired. The role played by Lesley Ann Downs would have been better served with a man in the role, making the blending of minds/spirits much smoother and the interactions a little cleaner. But overall, I've loved this movie and am happy to find it on DVD.

3 out of 5 stars what a gem, what a pearl.......2007-05-03

what an absolute delight, a gem of a piece of art, totally engrossing and a sort of movie you want to immediately, no, INSTANTLY, call friends and family alike, and tell them all about it...in great detail...on and on endlessly.....

Joshua Zhulke's performance can be laid on pace with that of Christian Bale in Empire of the Sun, Haley Joel in Pay it Forward or Edges of the Lord or Barrett Oliver in Neverending Story.

Awesome.

The power of one is all we have, but we all have it.

That quote sums up this movie.

4 out of 5 stars sweet & hopeful family fantasy.......2006-08-20

The Amazing Grace and Chuck is a feel good film that we need now in this time of bumbling policies and cynicism. Sure it is far-fetched, but so is Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz, and you don't see very many detractors of those classics.

The fact that the setting makes it seem real doesn't interpolate to actual reality, but there is a lot of morality to be learned from it in any case.

Then there is the splendid debut of the central Chuck, Joshua Zuehlk, who has never been seen again in anything of any substance. A shame, cuz the lad has chops. Haley Joel chops. And with the much-deserved not-so-overnight success of the fine Manhunting William L. Petersen (Mr. CSI himself), you'd think this hollers for release. Given all the bilge that DOES make the bins, this stuns me.

A great cast, funny, suspenseful, tender, current. And a bonus for fantasy hoops and Beantown fans, lotsa Garden footage of an erstwhile dream...Alex English donning the kelly shamrocks.

HBO/TriStar release this gem...NOW!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars A fantasy about how things might be............2005-11-25

This movie, in my opinion, is one of the most overlooked and unappreciated movies in film history. Most people have dismissed it as being unrealistic and far fetched. I think that they have missed the point. I don't think this movie was intended to be received as a potentially plausible solution to the menace of the Nuclear threat presented by the Cold War, but rather an idealistic fairy tale about how one, seemingly ordinary boy, could change the world.

This opinion is evident in the quote that is flashed on the screen stating "But wouldn't it be nice...". That quote is your cue that you are about to be drawn into a representation of a more perfect world; one where all people discover a way to lay down their arms and live together peacefully.

Granted, the actors that portray Chuck and Amazing Grace were both newcomers, so their performances are somewhat amaturish at times. Nonetheless, Alex English does a good job for his first (and I think only) turn at dramatic acting. And Joshua Zhulke absolutely shines in his portrayal of Chuck.

Then there are the wonderful pros as well. Jamie Lee Curtis is brilliant, as always, in one of her first dramatic, post Horror Genre, performances. Frances Conroy fits easily and seemlessly into her role as Chuck's mother. And William Petersen presents us with a glimpse of how he attained his future success through his spot-on performance as Chuck's Father. One of my favorite moments in this film is when Petersen's character swallows his pride and tells his son that he is proud of him in spite of the fact that Chuck's actions have caused a major disruption in the lives of his family, his community and his Father's career in particular.

Believeable or not, you cannot leave this move without having ridden a rollor coaster of emotions from joy to sorrow; amusement to greif; desolation to elation. You will laugh. You will cry and your faith in humanity will, in someway, be changed forever.

I highly recommend this movie for the entire family. I have watched it innumerable times and have never been disappointed. I don't think you will be either.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Film!.......2003-08-27

Proud Men is a wonderful film. Charlton Heston and Peter Strauss did an outstanding job in this heart-touching film about a man and his son coming to terms with each other. They finally realize that being proud does not mean you can't express love for each other. It is always nice to see a film with a good story that doesn't have to rely on special effects or sex. This film stands out by having a great story. Proud Men is one of Mr. Heston's best.

4 out of 5 stars Small Town Fun At It's Best!.......2001-08-18

After getting his radiator shot at by three local toughs, Beckman(Judge Reinhold) and hitchhiker Johnny(Willem Dafoe) find themselves stranded in a small Arizona town over Labor Day weekend. Soon, they meet Jessie, who owns the auto parts store,(played by Kaaren Lee) and her just home from college sister, Melissa, (Kate Vernon). After getting the radiator fixed, they spend time hanging in the local tavern (The 66), where they meet up again with the trouble-making trio. Hostility builds between the two sides, as does attractions between Beckman and Melissa, and Johnny and Jessie. Beckman, who is driving a 1955 Thunderbird, decides to enter the local Labor Day race (Open only to cars built before 1966), pitting him directly against the three (or so it would seem). Great drama and action follow as does excellent rockabilly music provided by a powerful and driving soundtrack. Just a fun and very entertaining movie.

5 out of 5 stars I just don't understand!.......2006-11-04

Could someone explain why this movie is available on DVD in England and Australia in PAL format, but not here? This movie is great, and I don't understand why it's not available in the U.S. Richard Crenna was terrific in this. Please make this available to buy!

5 out of 5 stars INTRUDERS.......2006-10-11

I saw this movie when I was a kid, and thinking about it now still gives me the chills. It's a must-see for anyone interested in the phenomenon. As someone said earlier, it's 10x better than Fire in the Sky; but I haven't seen anyone mention COMMUNION yet. It's a book by a guy named Whitley Strieber based on his experiences, and was adapted to a major motion picture starring CHRISTOPHER WALKEN. It's also out on DVD.

WORD.

This is the best movie I've seen on the subject, it is a shame it is not available on DVD, so I support the general claim to sell it on DVD, PLEASE!! I frequently remember the part of "little boy" as I call him (the boy in the valley)...it's FREAKY!!

5 out of 5 stars A superb candidate for DVD issue!.......2005-05-03

Having read Budd Hopkins' book 'Intruders' from which this TV mini-series originated, I can only conclude that this hot topic deserves a DVD reissue. And soon! It will undoudtedly sell lots and bundles, since the similarly-themed X-Files has been THE most popular TV show ever (Translated into 18 languages around the world, no less!). There seems to be an ever-growing audience for the subject. See the related website 'ufoevidence.org'. The cover-up will soon come to an end. A Disclosure could very well be finally on the way. Meanwhile, we have this nice documentary!
