Emma Thompson scores a double bull's-eye with this marvelous adaptation of Jane Austen's novel. Not only does Thompson turn in a strong (and gently humorous) performance as one of the Dashwood sisters--the one with "sense"--she also wrote the witty, wise screenplay. Austen's tale of 19th-century manners and morals provides a large cast with a feast of possibilities, notably Kate Winslet, in her pre-<I>Titanic</I> flowering, as Thompson's deeply romantic sister. Winslet attracts the wooing of shy Alan Rickman (a nice change of pace from his bad-guy roles) and dashing Greg Wise, while Thompson must endure an incredibly roundabout courtship with Hugh Grant, here in fine and funny form. All of this is doled out with the usual eye-filling English countryside and handsome costumes, yet the film always seems to be about the careful interior lives of its characters. The director, an inspired choice, is Taiwan-born Ang Lee, who brings the same exquisite taste and discreet touch he displayed in his previous Asian films (such as <I>Eat Drink Man Woman</I>). Thompson's script won an Oscar, and 1995 was a fine year for Jane Austen all around: <I>Persuasion</I> was made into an excellent picture, and <I>Emma</I> became the spritzy high school comedy <I>Clueless</I>. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

5 out of 5 stars Chick Flick.......2007-06-08

This adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense & Sensibility was an exceptional one. With the starring cast who could hardly go wrong. Enjoy!!

5 out of 5 stars Anything by Jane.......2007-06-04

My favorite movie of ALL TIME!! Anything by Jane Austin is wonderful and Emma Thompson did a wonderful adaptation of this story.

5 out of 5 stars Sense and Sensibility.......2007-06-04

An attractive and intelligent presentation of Jane Austen's interesting novel. The acting is superb; the settings are lovely.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT adaptation of Sense & Sensibility!.......2007-05-30

A "MUST HAVE" for the J. Austen fans and the DVD collection! The sisters (Elinor and Marianne) were well-portrayed by Emma Thompson and Kate Winslet. I especially liked the actress who portrayed Ms Lucy Steele-- the body language, the facial expressions, etc. were so effective in portending the true nature of this character (who was found to be quite conniving and insidious in her engagement with Edward and later his brother Robert). With the exception of the male actor who played the Colonel, I found the female actresses to be more convincing in their portrayal of the female characters in Sense and Sensibility. Overall, this film adaptation remains quite true to the book story line. One would not have to read the book in order to understand the film story line. I enjoyed watching it and was glad to have this DVD in my collection!

5 out of 5 stars What's not to love!.......2007-05-15

The cinematography is beautiful, the soundtrack amazing, honesty of the characters and Austen's story. This movie sucks me in every time-- and I confess to weeping along with Elinor at Edwards's confession... every time. This is a keeper!

Here's an event movie that holds up to being an event. This filmed version of <I>Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone</I>, adapted from the wildly popular book by J.K. Rowling, stunningly brings to life Harry Potter's world of Hogwarts, the school for young witches and wizards. The greatest strength of the film comes from its faithfulness to the novel, and this new cinematic world is filled with all the details of Rowling's imagination, thanks to exuberant sets, elaborate costumes, clever makeup and visual effects, and a crème de la crème cast, including Maggie Smith, Richard Harris, Alan Rickman, and more. Especially fine is the interplay between Harry (Daniel Radcliffe) and his schoolmates Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson), as well as his protector, the looming Hagrid (Robbie Coltrane). The second-half adventure--involving the titular sorcerer's stone--doesn't translate perfectly from page to screen, ultimately because of the film's fidelity to the novel; this is a case of making a movie for the book's fans, as opposed to a transcending film. Writer Steve Kloves and director Chris Columbus keep the spooks in check, making this a true family film, and with its resourceful hero wide-eyed and ready, one can't wait for Harry's return. Ages 8 and up. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

5 out of 5 stars Great movie for all!.......2007-06-22

"Harry Potter and SS" is the best fantastic movies I have watched so far. Together with the excellent skills of director Christ Columbus and well-done acting of Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson as three main characters, and other stellar casts, "Harry Potter and SS" has becomes one of the most-watched movies once it's first released in the threater. The plot mainly focuses on the friendship between Harry and his two best friends, Hermione and Ron, and how they struggle throughout the movie to make the stone protected from the Lord Voldermore, an evil darkwizard. As the movie begins, Harry Potter, portraits by Daniel Radcliffe, a 10-years-old wizard, who is being treated so badly by his mean uncle and aunt. The Dursley's family has been concealing the fact that Harry doesn't belong in this Muggle world, and try all attempts to block all the invited letters from Hogward, a magical school where all young wizards go. It all changes, however, until his eleventh birthday when Hagrid, a giantkeykeeper of Hogward, comes and directly give him a letter, which simply says that Harry has been acccepted to attend to Hogward. Leaving the Dursley's family to go to Howard, Harry learns all about the death of his parents and begins to feel himself important as every wizard eagerly wants to shake his hands wherever he passes by. He also learns that the scar on his forhead, which makes him invulnerable from LV when he was a little baby, has made him the most famous wizard in the Wizard World. Once Harry sets foot on Hogward, a school full of matric spells, he struggles to make himself adjusted to the new World; he befriends with Ron and Hermione and other young wizards as well. Ron, who is Harry's closest companion, keeps Harry reasonable at all times and is willing to risk his life and everything he could for friendship. In the movie, you will witness how he sacrifies himself in the magnificently dangerous chessmatch in order for Harry to keep going. On the other hand, Hermione is a sensitive and very intelligent girl who really helpful throughout the movie. Thanks to her knowledgable tips, Harry could be able to choose the right potion and move on to the next door. Perhaps, that is their friendship which makes the movie go smoothly and held my interest and curiosity 'til the end, when Harry is face-to-face with LV.......
This movie is highly recommended for all, especially for youths who are searching for adventure and fantastic movies.

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good Movie.......2007-06-13

I liked this movie. It was pretty funny. It was little bit scary, but great other than that. The parts I saw was good, only that I didn't see the full movie. I was outside in the hall doing POS (Parts of Speech). I watched this movie in class. It was pretty good.

NOTE: Rated PG. Parental Guidance Suggested--Some Material may not be suitable for children.

Rated PG for spooky moments and mild brief language. This movie may not be appropriate for younger kids under age 8.

4 out of 5 stars Faithful Book Adaptation.......2007-06-06

Now here's something you don't see every day - a movie that is faithful to the book.

11 year old Harry Potter (Daniel Radcliffe) is an orphan living with his uncle and aunt. They treated him barely better then a servant.

All that changes one day when he finds out that he's a wizard. Suddenly, he's introduced to a world that he doesn't know yet where he's famous. Before it all really sinks in, he's off to Hogwarts for his first year of schooling in the art of magic.

There, he makes friends with Ron (Rupert Grint) and Hermione (Emma Watson). But he also makes enemies in the form of Draco Malfoy (Tom Felton), a snobbish student. He evens seems to have attracted the negative attention of one of the teachers.

But under all the fun, a serious danger lurks. And Harry is stumbling upon the pieces. Will he figure it out? What can an inexperienced wizard do against overwhelming powers?

This movie was my introduction to Harry's world. Now I'm going back and watching it again after having read the books. I was pleased to see just how faithful it really was to the story. It tried to stay as true as it could to the book. The set, costumes, and special effects all worked well to bring the world of the books to vivid life.

But that faithfulness is also the movie's downfall. Outside of Harry, Ron, and Hermione, none of the characters get much in the way of development. Additionally, the story takes a while to really get going. This is a flaw with the book as well, so I can't blame this only on the movie.

Even with those complaints aside, it's wonderful to see this imaginative series brought to such vivid and accurate life. Fans of the books will be pleased.

5 out of 5 stars HARRY POTTER & THE SORCERERS STONE.......2007-05-31

GREAT MOVIE. FUN TO WATCH AND THE SPECIAL EFFECTS WERE GOOD.

5 out of 5 stars Great movie and great series!.......2007-05-07

Had to have this one because what's the sense in having the collection if one is missing. I'm sure all you Harry potter fans know what I'm talking about!

1 out of 5 stars live free or buy this again?.......2007-06-24

This is a money grab, absolutly right. Better editions exist and they will release the box set again with the fourth film included a couple of months after it's been available on it's own. Isn't that the formula these days?

4 out of 5 stars Worth buying if you don't currently own it........2007-06-24

I have to agree with one of the previous posters. This collection is worth buying if you don't yet own it and/or you don't really care about what special features there are. I am a little upset that the newest movie is PG-13, but don't feel it will change the tone of the movie. All in all, factor in the free ticket, and you're looking at saving nearly $20 over the "5 Star Collection" from Fox.

1 out of 5 stars Glorification of Violence.......2007-06-22

This sort of nonsense is fed as entertainment to young teen boys. The elite love that. It creates a steady supply of foolish young men that "volunteer" to die for the sordid wars for profit, such as the one in Iraq. Bruce Willis is an OLD man; he was middle-aged for the first movie and even older now. It's unlikely that an aged hero could do anything portrayed in these films. Violence kills and cripples - get it right. "W" Bush knows that, he kept well out of harm's way during the Vietnam War.

1 out of 5 stars Die Hard Tripple Dippers!!.......2007-06-22

First of all let me start by saying I have been waiting for this set since I heard rumors of it's release back in 10/2006. Second DO NOT buy this set if you are looking for a cleaner newly restored version of the films! these are indeed a re-hash of the first and second releases the menus are the same as the five star/special editions respectively. The video quality has not changed. I am seriously disappointed in this release I expected better from fox for the re-release of the franchise that they have re-dipped into for a 2007 summer blockbuster! I did NOT buy this set I rented it from Blockbuster Online and compared it to the first release box set and the fives star/special editions.
I would expect they would do more than make this an advertisement campaign for the sequel. If you are looking to get this set for the simple reason that you find that it's cheaper than the previous versions and you DO NOT have the previous versions... then by all means go ahead buy it but be forewarned... I hear rumors of a remastered set when DH4 releases on dvd.

1 out of 5 stars Pointless release of these films........2007-06-19

It is obvious that in this day and age of DVD releases and HD DVD not so much a problem because most of the older releases have not come out yet. There is already the die hard collection on dvd that was released in 2000.Even these are terrific action films especally Die Hard , do we really need another release of these films just for the sake of a promotional disk for Die Hard 4 sure i like other fans of Die Hard will go to see the 4th movie it's good to have Mclane back but who cares about this collection they should have released this for the people that have HD DVD give this to them and forget about releaseing these on DVD again it is pointless. And for those who want to buy this get the ones that were

released in 2000 better sound don't fall prey to there promotional crap. And im sure they will release this again when Die Hard 4 comes out proof positive that these studios are not smart on releasing Dvd's.

You don't have to be a <I>Star Trek</I> fan to enjoy <I>Galaxy Quest</I>, but it certainly helps. A knowingly affectionate tribute to <I>Trek</I> and any other science fiction TV series of the 1960s and beyond, this crowd-pleasing comedy offers in-jokes at warp speed, hitting the bull's-eye for anyone who knows that (1) the starship captain always removes his shirt to display his manly physique; (2) any crew member not in the regular cast is dead meat; and (3) the heroes always stop the doomsday clock with one second to spare. So it is with Commander Taggart (Tim Allen) and the stalwart crew of the NSEA <I>Protector</I>, whose intergalactic exploits on TV have now been reduced to a dreary cycle of fan conventions and promotional appearances. That's when the Thermians arrive, begging to be saved from Sarris, the reptilian villain who threatens to destroy their home planet.

Can actors rise to the challenge and play their roles for real? The Thermians are counting on it, having studied the "historical documents" of the <I>Galaxy Quest</I> TV show, and their hero worship (not to mention their taste for Monte Cristo sandwiches) is ultimately proven worthy, with the help of some <I>Galaxy</I> geeks on planet Earth. And while <I>Galaxy Quest</I> serves up great special effects and impressive Stan Winston creatures, director Dean Parisot (<I>Home Fries</I>) is never condescending, lending warm acceptance to this gentle send-up of sci-fi TV and the phenomenon of fandom. Best of all is the splendid cast, including Sigourney Weaver as buxom blonde Gwen DeMarco; Alan Rickman as frustrated thespian Alexander Dane; Tony Shalhoub as dimwit Fred Kwan; Daryl Mitchell as former child-star Tommy Webber; and Enrico Colantoni as Thermian leader Mathesar, whose sing-song voice is a comedic coup de grâce. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

    5 out of 5 stars Loved It........2007-05-24

This was just plain outright funny. Pokes fun at the Trekkies out there. Tim Allen is super as is Sigourny Weaver. Two thumbs up.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent Star Trek Spoof.......2007-05-16

Tim Allen mocking Captain Kirk, Sigourney Weaver repeating everything the ship's computer says, classic. Bored, bitter and alcoholic from touring the conventions, the washed up has beens are suddenly beamed onto a ship modeled on their TV series and expected to defeat a formidable foe. The problem is -- even though their hosts expect them to know how to do everything (after all, they did on the show) -- they initially can't even perform basic tasks. This is a silly movie, but if you liked Star Trek and can handle some silliness, this is among the best you can get.

    4 out of 5 stars Good for a Laugh.......2007-05-13

Personally, I think this movie is pretty cheesy, and it isn't one of my favorites. My husband, however, thinks it is a riot. He loves it. He laughs out loud every time he watches it. For me, it is worth watching it just to see my husband's reaction.
We both like the characters and how it plays off of Star Trek. I think the acting is good.

    5 out of 5 stars A geek's treasure........2007-04-16

Excellent and funny movie that pokes fun at "Star Trek". If you like sci-fi and funny movies you will like this one.

4 out of 5 stars Hilarious parody of "Star Trek" et al........2007-04-08

The humor in this movie works on two levels. First is the comedy that results from the movie's basic premise: a bunch of TV actors suddenly find themselves in exactly the same sorts of adventures they used to act out on screen, only now it's real. But second, and even funnier in my opinion, is the humor derived from parodying the entire world of science fiction, and its all to often rabid, religiously devoted fans.

It also showcases the darker side of being involved with a pop-culture phenomenon: actors who become so closely identified with their roles, they find they simply can't get work doing anything else. I imagine the real cast of "Star Trek" could feel how close to the mark this hits (and George Reeves, TV's Superman of the 1950s, may have even killed himself in despair at suffering this fate). The most memorable scene in the movie for me was Alan Rickman's delivery of the line "By Grabthar's Hammer, I've never seen such savings." His rigid posture, hesitant speech, and stony facial expression are hilarious. He's a classicly trained actor who's become pigeonholed in a role he considers beneath him, and he has been reduced to the humiliation of uttering childish drivel at store openings. For all that much of the movie is made in the spirit of William Shatner's famous SNL "get a life" skit, the movie takes an affectionate look at fans, and two sci-fi geeks even provide indispensible help to the heroes in the end.

"Die Hard" - (1988, 131 min.) - Bruce Willis stars as a lone cop locked in a desperate battle against terrorists who have taken over a Los Angeles high-rise in the blockbuster action thriller that started it all! "Die Hard 2: Die Harder" (1990, 131 min.) - A rogue U.S. special forces unit celebrates Christmas by hikacking an entire Washington, D.C. airport. Their plan to crash all in-coming flights until an imprisoned dictator is released is flawless except for one detail: off-duty cop John McClane. "Die Hard 3: With a Vengeance" (1995, 124 min.) - When a psychopathic criminal who calls himself "Simon" plants bombs throughout the city of Manhattan, washed-out cop John McClane finds himself in a race against time: not only to defuse the bombs but to uncover the truth behind Simon's madness.

Christmas is not a good time of year in the McClane family. Especially for John McClane, who always happens to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. But if it weren't for the heroics of this rugged, resourceful cop, many lives would be lost and megalomaniacal terrorists with various European accents would be having their evil way. In 1988, director John McTiernan and the phenomenal hit <I>Die Hard</I> introduced the world to maverick Sgt. John McClane (Bruce Willis) of the New York Police Department, and in the course of this film and two blockbuster sequels McClane was frantically saving lives, buildings, airports, schools, cities, and even his marriage from the threat of international terrorists, psychopaths, and cagey mercenaries. Now you can watch antihero McClane blast his way through all three movies. Witness his transition from a happy-go-lucky, slightly cranky cop to extremely burnt-out, partially alcoholic cop with a propensity to attract extreme violence and catastrophe. Yet the one thing that always overshadows his character flaws is his uncanny ability to spoil the schemes of stylish villains with slick names such as Hans Gruber (the nasty terrorist from the first film, played to perfection by Alan Rickman). Sit down, pop some corn, grab a bottle of Coca-Cola, and get ready to watch (in any order you please) the <I>Die Hard Trilogy</I>--a must for any action buff or fan of Bruce Willis, who owes his film career to the enduring appeal of these global box-office hits. <I>--Jeremy Storey</I>

2 out of 5 stars Great Movies, who's the swelled head that packaged them?.......2007-01-13

The Movies, what can I say they are great as always. The problem I have is the packaging. This collection of three Willis' films (6disks) takes up more shelf space than a five film "007" collection, or the 4 film (9disk) Alien collection. Now these are good/even great action flicks, but they are not 007, who has the swelled head in the production company?
Guys, I do buy DVDs because the quality is better, I also buy them because they take up LESS shelf space. So lets get with it?

5 out of 5 stars Die Hard = Action At Its Finest.......2006-08-31

The original 'Die Hard' is one of those rare movies that come around once every 10 years or so. If you look at any of the AFI lists of the greatest movies ever made, you will see this film make their list, the amazing thing being that the lists I am referring to are not meant for action but movies IN GENERAL. With an amazing cast, wonderful script, solid directing, this is a rare example of the perfect movie. If you love action movies and haven't ever seen Die Hard before, stop reading this review and go pick up the film. Even 18 years later, the movie had stood the test of time with barely a bump in the road, and it's the quickest 2+ hours that will go by.

    ***** HIGHEST POSSIBLE RECOMMENDATION

Die Hard 2 is another fine movie and a wonderful sequel. The writers could have easily copied the same storyline as with the original Die Hard (see the Under Siege films), but instead they go a different route with another fine script. This movie only gets better with age for me. Another solid performance by Bruce Willis, fine directing and you have a sequel while not as good as the original, it's enjoyable to say the least.

    **** HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

'Die Hard With A Vengeance' is an odd film. Wonderfully acted and written at times, there are scenes which I think are even better than the original Die Hard. But then you have ridiculous moments like Bruce Willis and Samuel Jackson falling 100+ feet and not killing themselves where the movie just falls flat. I think the script itself is even better than the Die Hard 2 story, but with 5 years time between the 2nd and 3rd films, this just doesn't have the same enjoyment as the other movies. Deciding to make Bruce Willis a divorced down and out drunk cop doesn't help you connect as well to the character as in the 1988 and 1990 films either, so this movie gets the lowest rating of the bunch.

    *** RECOMMENDED

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome action.......2006-07-22

First, I love Bruce Willis! I love movies that portray the "bad guys" getting what they deserve in the end. Bruce Willis movies do a great job showing fans that. I also enjoy the fact that he is a family guy. Not a perfect father but he really does love them. In "Die Hard" (Collection) there are some corny parts but you can get past them quickly because they are so action-packed. The "Die Hard" (Collection) is NOT POLITICALLY CORRECT! Go Bruce!! :)

Kevin Costner's lousy English accent is a small obstacle in this often exciting version of the Robin Hood fable. That aside, it's refreshing to have a preface to the old story in which we meet the robber hero of Sherwood Forest as a soldier in King Richard's Crusades, coming home to find his people under siege from the cruelties of the Sheriff of Nottingham (Alan Rickman). After Robin and his community of outcasts and fighters take to the trees, director Kevin Reynolds (<I>Fandango</I>, <I>187</I>) is on more familiar narrative ground, and he goes for the gusto with lots of original action (Robin shoots two arrows simultaneously from his bow in two directions). Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio, as Marion, makes a convincing damsel in distress, and Morgan Freeman brings dignity to his role as Robin's Moor friend. Alan Rickman, however, gets the most attention for his scene-chewing role as the rotten sheriff, an almost campy performance that is highly entertaining but perhaps a little out of sorts with the rest of the film. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars An example of why I hate extended versions of movies.......2007-05-09

First of all this movie is a classic. I remember watching it all the time when I was a kid. I'm pissed though because of the way they have released this movie on dvd. First, they put the original version on two sides of the disc, which force the viewer to get up and flip the dvd to finish the movie. Then they make this 2 disc special edition with a whole lot of new scenes that totally didn't need to be in the movie. Plus, they don't even include the original version on the 2 disc special edition. Jesus christ, what does a person have to do to get a great movie decently put on dvd? Is it too much to ask of these movie companies that they show these movies proper respect?

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites!.......2007-05-09

Okay... when this movie came out it was panned by the critics. And aside from a special few of whom I've discussed this movie, it isn't a big favorite of the masses.
But I ignore everyone else's opinion because I totally love this movie! Purchased this DVD to replace my VHS. I love the story, I love the actors, and I love the Brian Adams song at the end. I'm a stickler for a good villian, and this movie has one. Not necessarily the evilest, but unintentionally, character wise, very funny.
If you've not seen this movie, perhaps you should rent it first, but sometimes purchasing a used movie is actually cheaper than renting it. And if you don't like it... sell it on e-bay.

    5 out of 5 stars Kevin Costner's best.......2007-05-05

Kevin Costner may have received some criticism for this movie, to wit: his lack of an accent. He may have gotten more accolades for other more mediocre films, to wit: Dances with Wolves. But in my book, this is the best movie he's ever done. This is just a good, wholesome, fun, rendition of the classic story. It deserves to be watched and enjoyed by anyone - even those who rightfully panned such losers as Waterworld and The Postman.

5 out of 5 stars Response to an earlier review.......2007-03-17

I have to agree with the other positive reviews of the Two-Disc special extended edition. I do want to respond to one reviewer who said that key scenes were cut from the original... I'm not sure about the other scenes referred to, but I am currently watching the movie, and I can definitly say the scene where Robin cuts the Sheriff's cheek is in the extended version. It is very fast... the cutting sequence is probably less than 1/2 second so you have to be watching for it... but it is there.

<I>Something the Lord Made</I> recounts the relationship between Dr. Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman) and Vivian Thomas (Mos Def). It begins in 1930s Nashville when imperious cardiac surgeon Blalock hires Thomas, an African American carpenter, as his janitor. When the latter reveals a passion for medicine and facility with surgical instruments, Blalock promotes him to lab tech. Thomas isn't given a raise, works side jobs to make ends meet, and is expected to be grateful. Along the way, he follows Blalock from Vanderbilt to Johns Hopkins, where they save thousands of lives through their pioneering work, but will Thomas ever get any credit? The film provides a satisfying answer to that question. Joseph Sargent (<I>A Lesson Before Dying</I>) directs with subtlety and intelligence, while Rickman and Mos Def are in top form, often underplaying where most actors would do otherwise. <I>Something the Lord Made</I> won the 2004 Emmy for outstanding made-for-TV movie. <I>--Kathleen C. Fennessy</I>

    Description

(Drama) Something the Lord Made tells the emotional true story of two men who defied the rules of their time to launch a medical revolution, set against the backdrop of the Jim Crow south. Working in 1940s Baltimore on an unprecedented technique for performing heart surgery on "blue babies," Dr. Alfred Blalock (Alan Rickman) and lab technician Vivien Thomas (Mos Def) form an impressive team. As Blalock and Thomas invent a new field of medicine, saving thousands of lives in the process, social pressures threaten to undermine their collaboration and tear their friendship apart.<P><b>DVD Features:</b>

5 out of 5 stars Something HBO Made.......2007-05-17

When I read the description of Something The Lord Made, I thought to myself - there is just no conceivable way that this is going to be interesting. However, it did have a lot going for it. It was directed by Joseph Sargent, who also directed the brilliant, A Lesson Before Dying. It starred Alan Rickman who is so good he could make an IKEA commercial look like it was directed by Ingmar Bergman. It paired Rickman with Mos Def, who has remarkable screen presence. (I first noticed Mos Def in another exceptional film, The Woodsman, which, coincidentally or not, also featured Kyra Sedgwick.) So, despite the promise of (in)action confined exclusively to a medical lab, I forged ahead.

I'm so glad I did. This is one of those minor gems you might easily miss. Make sure to pay attention to the score, which is outstanding. It's way too easy to sketch this movie out as an anti-racism diatribe, that's way too facile. As with A Lesson Before Dying, racism is simply a fact, not a larger-than-life villain. This, of course, makes the depiction that much more powerful. We don't see the pain of racism courtesy of gassy soliloquies; we feel the pain of it as we read Mos Def's face watching Dr. Blalock receive his award at Baltimore's Biltmore Hotel.

Why beat a dead parrot? We know the Biltmore is segregated. Vivien - Def - can only gain admittance by posing as a bellhop. We know that Blalock is a vain and arrogant surgeon (quelle surprise!) only too willing to bask in glory that would never have been his without Vivien's remarkable contributions. And yes, we know that the racist culture surrounding these men makes it easy for Blalock to distance himself from Vivien when it suits him.

This context of racism is woven right into our flag; it's part of the culture, hardly newsworthy enough to merit a film. The engine that's really driving Something The Lord Made is not racism at all; it's the subtle, complex relationship joining these very different men who share a passion for medicine. The interplay between Vivien's self-effacing, quiet dignity and Blalock's braggadocio is pure gold, these two are so right for each other; they balance one another in a way that is touching at the very least.

Certainly there were moments when I wanted to explain to the supercilious twits at Hopkins that Vivien was the genius behind the wheel and they should be lavishing praise on him. At times it was sad, and Vivien's stoicism makes it sadder. But the movie never takes cheap shots; Def and Rickman offer marvelously reserved performances, thereby increasing the impact. Ultimately I was left with an overwhelmingly positive sense of how people can, and often do, achieve miraculous things despite the mountains of debris and bizarre baggage they've been saddled with. A wonderful film.

The movie is good, probably better if you didn't or don't read the essay in the WP that the movie was made from. I ended up regifting the movie--gave it to mom for mother's day, and that really says it all.

5 out of 5 stars Movie was great!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-05-09

The movie was recommended to me from a friend. I bought the movie and have since loaned it out to others. It really shows the power and intelligence of African-Americans and their contribution to medicine. If you are aware of anything that happened back in the 1930's you can really relate to this movie. It is a must for your movie collection!!!!!!!!

Tom Selleck plays Matthew Quigley, the cowboy hero in this traditional Western, set very untraditionally in Australia. After some macho silliness in the opening minutes, the story settles into a surprisingly evocative tale of Quigley, a sharpshooter who had come to the country to work for a land baron (Alan Rickman) and who is on the mend after a brutal attack. In the company of a woman (Laura San Giacomo) abused by that same baron, Quigley gets his strength and his shooting skills back while healing in the midst of aboriginal people as well as some stunning Australian settings. Director Simon Wincer (<I>Phar Lap</I>) brings a lot of integrity to this rare horse opera from contemporary Hollywood. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Classic Western in a new setting. The stoic cowboy and the damsel in distress Down Under. It is always a good evening when watching the interactions of the cowboy and the 'crazy lady'.

From the beginning when he rescues her and she 'latches onto him' as her protector, right to the end when she.... Well... that would be telling.

It has all the right mixtures, The Good Guy, The Surprisingly Tough Damsel, and The Overstated Evil Cattle Baron, all in the wilds of old Australia. Good Stuff!

5 out of 5 stars I never thought this movie could be a Western was I Wrong this is a Western in a Far off Land........2007-03-11

Man I love it when the bad guys get it in the end, and they do in this movie. Tom Selleck plays a Great Hero in this movie. If you can handle some Brutal seens ,Blood and Shot'em up swearing, but in the content of this movie its done to bring its point across and does that.Hey Who Watchs Westerns in Todays World? I-still-do.Dont forget Open Range too!

    5 out of 5 stars Tom Selleck.......2007-02-12

A different kind of western! The story line is good and Tom Selleck his usual great self!

    3 out of 5 stars Quigley ... not a bad movie.......2007-02-06

It was sort of a Revisionist Western. It was set in the Colonial period of Australia . The best things were

    * the cinematography of Australia's glorious landscape. Most of it shot around Alice Springs where I lived the a while.

    * adequate performances from the 3 main characters ..Tom Selleck, Laura San Giacomo currently seen as Maya Gallo in TV show "Just Shoot Me", and Alan Rickman .... and it has dingo's too

"Quigley" is a reasonable action movie which revealed the truth of our shameful past.

5 out of 5 stars Classic western (about as far west as one can get!).......2007-01-14

I've watched this movie at least 15 times since it was made in 1990; it's one of my two favorite westerns (the other, Silverado, 1985), and when Amazon advertized it for $10.99, I had to buy it. It's a great depiction of 1870's life in a different country. Tom Selleck is great as Matthew Quigley, and Alan Rickman (Die Hard) is one of my favorite bad guys. If you like good westerns, you can't go wrong with this movie.

Irish writer-director Neil Jordan followed up his surprise hit The Crying Game with this controversial biography of IRA leader Michael Collins (Liam Neeson), one of the most important political leaders of the 20th century. The film follows Collins as he matures from guerrilla leader to national hero and statesman. Jordan's take on Collins is that he was set up by Irish president Eamon De Valera (Alan Rickman), who was jealous of Collins's legendary popularity. De Valera puts Collins in the position of negotiating a peace treaty that would never satisfy the Irish hero's hard-core followers. When the IRA leader returns with a first-step compromise, De Valera undercuts Collins's popularity by refusing to support the revised treaty. And the civil war continues for decades. Michael Collins occasionally loses focus and momentum, but is the kind of exciting historical drama that deserves to be called "sweeping." It is also one of the most beautifully photographed films in years: cinematographer Chris Menges uses color and texture to set moods and accent emotions. The movie also stars Aidan Quinn, Julia Roberts, and Stephen Rea. The digital video disc includes a 50-minute BBC documentary on the making of the movie. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars "Who'll Take My Place?" ~ The Art Of 20th Century Warfare And Doing The Unexpected.......2007-05-20

The '96 release of `Michael Collins' chronicles the life and death of the famous, or infamous depending on your perspective, of the Irish freedom fighter Michael Collins. I can't vouch for the historicity of the events chronicled in this film since I know very little about the early years of the IRA, I can only judge it for its entertainment value and message.

First, the cast is excellent with the likes of; Liam Neeson (as Michael Collins), Aidan Quinn, Alan Rickman, Stephen Rea and Julia Roberts. There's even a short appearance at the end of the film by Jonathan Rhys Meyers. With such a cast in place it's no wonder that the acting superior and highly believable. The storyline is also superior and perfectly captures the angst of a country in turmoil. It clearly and expertly shows that the problem is not simply black and white, England versus Ireland. This multi-faceted and layered plot also explores the divided loyalties and passions of a people in search of a cohesive vision of freedom.

Factual or not `Michael Collins' is a stirring and emotional story that explores a form of warfare that is essential to understand in today's world, giving some clarification to the all important question, "Who is the patriot and who is the terrorist?

4 out of 5 stars Fact and Fiction.......2007-05-13

I love this movie. Not just because Liam Neison is just so cool. The story line has a lot of fact and if you remove the love angle you have a peek into the Irish Rebellion.

2 out of 5 stars Michael Collins poor quality of a DVD.......2007-02-16

To put it bluntly, the DVD freezes up many times throughout the movie. I've sent messages to the seller without any replies. I would not recommend making any purchases from this company.

5 out of 5 stars Accurate and Entertaining. .......2007-01-08

Well, of course, no historical movie is ever completely accurate but I think the film provides a legitimate view of who Michael Collins was and of the era in which he lived. I've always liked Liam Neeson, but I appreciated him about three times more after seeing this effort. His portrayal of the great hero was charismatic and riveting. As for Rickman, who plays de Valera, he's brilliant here although I don't think that I have ever seen him be average in anything. The sum of Michael Collins is far greater than its individual performances, however. The plot is brisk and it's difficult to take your eyes off the screen because even the special effects are memorable.

    Description

For the good of all men, and the love of one woman, he fought to uphold justice by breaking the law. In this richly-detailed, action-packed retelling of the legendary story, Robin Hood must battle the evil Sheriff of Nottingham not only to save King Richard the Lionhearted and England but also to save his love, the noble beauty Maid Marian.

5 out of 5 stars Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves.......2007-05-14

Charming love story with a good bit of humor built in. Kevin Costner is perfect for the part of Robin Hood. Not only is he gorgeous, but you truly believe that he's capable of being that hero that Robin Hood was.
