Jack Klugman and Tony Randall give an advanced course in chemistry in the auspicious first season of <I>The Odd Couple</I>, which would only get better as the veteran character actors made themselves at home in their signature roles and the series switched from a laugh track to a live audience. In these first episodes, <I>The Odd Couple</I> hews pretty much to the voice and spirit of Neil Simon's play about mismatched roommates, sloppy sportswriter Oscar Madison and "miserable, picky, irritating" photographer Felix Unger ("That was the point," defends series executive producer and writer Garry Marshall, who provides lively audio introductions for each episode and commentary for the pilot). Playing pivotal roles this first season are Felix and Oscar's poker playing buddies, Murray the cop (Al Molinaro), Vinnie, Roy, and Speed, the fabulous Pigeon sisters (Monica Evans and Carole Shelley reprising their Broadway and film roles), and, of course, Neil Hefti's jaunty, jazzy theme, which was introduced in the 1968 film. As with <I>M*A*S*H</I>, the series would establish its own identity and supplant previous incarnations in the public's consciousness. <I>The Odd Couple</I> was never a ratings smash before it became a syndication staple.

The series' loyal following is amply rewarded with this five-disc set. In addition to all 24 first season episodes, a bonus disc contains four billed as "Tony and Jack's Favorite Episodes," including the one where Oscar attacks Felix in his sleep, and the duo are paired as contestants on the game show <I>Password</I>. In a clip from <I>The Mike Douglas Show</I>, Tony Randall promotes the series, and somehow ends up challenging Douglas and Pat Boone to a push-up contest (Boone wins!). A reunited Randall and Klugman, his voice a rasp following his throat cancer surgery, are seen in a priceless clip from a 1993 performance of <I>The Odd Couple</I> to benefit Randall's National Actor's Theatre. A gag reel is negligible, but Klugman contributes home videos of a book tour and he provides commentary for a clip of him winning his first Emmy Award ("I've never seen this," he says delightedly). <I>The Odd Couple</I> is the very model of a classic character-driven comedy. From its dream-team casting to the literate, witty writing, there is nothing odd about why this series' remains one of the most beloved in all TV Land. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

Product Description

Two divorced New Yorkers---a slob and a fussbudget---try to live together "without driving each other crazy" in this classic sitcom based on Neil Simon's hit play and movie. Both Jack Klugman and Tony Randall won Emmys in the leads, the latter in the final year of a five-season run. "Now if I only had a job," Randall said at the Emmy gala. The show inspired two remakes, one an animated series portraying the main characters as a cat and a dog, and a 1982-83 version with a mostly black cast.

5 out of 5 stars Just like old times.......2007-06-18

I used to watch it all the times in the 90s when I lived in NYC. This DVD brought back memories from those good old days. Not bad for a pack of 4 DVDs for under $30.

5 out of 5 stars The Odd Couple - a winner.......2007-06-10

My husband and I love watching this late at night, since I remember watching it late at night growing up. I forgot how racey it is, even for that time, so our kids could never watch it. But we enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars As Good As You Remember It.......2007-06-08

Tony Randall and Jack Klugman are as funny as you remember them in this long awaited release of the Odd Couple's first season on TV. A rare example of a TV series being better than the movie, Randall and Klugman are a comic team for the ages in this TV series based on an adaptation of a Neil Simon play. We were disappointed at first when the opening credits weren't the ones we were hoping to see, but the right ones can be found on the disc labeled "Tony and Jack's Favorites". We remember enjoying the reruns when we were kids and now our kids are watching the DVDs with us and loving every minute.

5 out of 5 stars Oddly Awesome!.......2007-06-08

Have been waiting for this for years...Finally, this set is really great. Fantastic quality images with commentary from Garry Marshall, et al. A real must have for any fan of the Odd Couple!

5 out of 5 stars One Of The Top TV Series In History.......2007-06-05

Those who are too young to remember, the Odd Couple is probably one of the best TV Series in history. One of the few series that is actually better than the movie. M.A.S.H. being another. The packaging is very durable and lite. On a scale from 1 to 10, 1 being the packaging used for Musters Season 2 which I still cannot put it back together, I would give it an 8. All single sided DVD's instead of annoying double sided (difficult to tell which side is which) DVD's.

This 1987 thriller was a predictable hit with the teen audience it worked overtime to attract. Like most of director Joel Schumacher's films, it's conspicuously designed to push the right marketing and demographic buttons, and granted, there's some pretty cool stuff going on here and there. Take Kiefer Sutherland, for instance. In <I>Stand by Me</I> he played a memorable bully, but here he goes one step further as a memorable bully <I>vampire</I> who leads a tribe of teenage vampires on their nocturnal spree of bloodsucking havoc. Jason Patric plays the new guy in town, who quickly attracts a lovely girlfriend (Jami Gertz), only to find that she might be recruiting him into the vampire fold. The movie gets sillier as it goes along, and resorts to a routine action-movie showdown, but it's a visual knockout (featuring great cinematography by Michael Chapman) and boasts a cast that's eminently able (pardon the pun) to sink their teeth into the best parts of an uneven screenplay. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Have move to Santa Calra where there is lots of vampires. Micheal thinks he i a vampire now.

5 out of 5 stars 80's Classics .......2007-05-23

If this movie could be rated Higher I would. Its just that great era where movies were just good, I love this movie a whole lot, I believe this movie got me into the whole genre of Vampire Loving. And of course the actors in this movie for a child growing up in that era were also hot. The soundtrack to this movie is off the hook and its a great summer time CD. I highly recommend this movie. It truly is the best movie ever of its time.

5 out of 5 stars Full screen & Widescreen included.......2007-05-12

The great thing about this dvd is on one side is the 'full screen' version , and the other side is the 'Widescreen' (2:35) version. Its cool when dvds come with both versions!!

4 out of 5 stars Guilty Pleasure.......2007-04-29

Reading these reviews, it's clear that "The Lost Boys" has some irresistable magic going for it; I've loved it ever since I saw it in the theater when it came out. The '80's trappings are at least authentic, as the film was made in 1986 when the splashy colors of Corey Haim's shirts were actually chic (believe it, kiddies, I was there).

But what really makes it work, I think, is the care the writer (or writers) took to get the details of vampire mythology - the "hellhound", the importance of inviting the vampire into the home - right even as they re-shaped it to fit the contemporary setting. The twists all work, and the ending is just brilliant ("..all the damn vampires"). It's a solidly entertaining and engaging horror film, possibly deserving a place in a "top ten" of the genre.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Vampires movie if not the BEST!!.......2007-04-16

First of all, im not going to get into the history of who's in it and who isn't. Second, this movie is a DEFINITE! for Vampires fan. Third, Keifer Sutherland at his best, although Coreys are lame together, in this movie they did work together as best as they could. Fourth, the Movie, the plot, the action, and the look of the vampires, are all Cool. This movie is a must *HAVE* especially the 2 Disc Edition. The Fifth reason is just that, the bonus CD is extremely what EVERY "COLLECTOR'S EDITON" should be. This is the a great movie and a great buy any place for the price!

A beloved tabby cat becomes the catalyst for healing and hope between a young girl and her widowed father in Disney's 1964 classic, based on the enchanting fable by Paul Gallico. Set in the Scottish highlands in 1912, the story focuses on Andrew MacDhui (Patrick McGoohan) a veterinarian who, after the death of his wife, has closed his heart to goodness and empathy-- toward his animal patients and his only child. Left essentially an orphan, Mary (Karen Dotrice) finds love from her cat, Thomasina, until a tragedy injures the cat and her father orders it to be killed. A tenderhearted maiden (Susan Hampshire) finds Thomasina, detects a heartbeat, and nurses the feline back to health. Her healing powers eventually move beyond the animal kingdom into the lives of MacDhui and Mary. The stellar cast includes standout performances by Dotrice and Matthew Garber (who plays Mary's loyal chum)--better known as the duo, Jane and Michael Banks, in <I>Mary Poppins</I>. Best watched with kids and Kleenex. (Ages 5 and older) <I>--Lynn Gibson</I>

Description

Set against the beauty of the Scottish Highlands, Paul Gallico's best-selling story of a little girl's undying love for her cat comes wonderfully to life in this classic Disney adaptation. Tragedy strikes when Mary McDhui (Karen Dotrice) finds her beloved Thomasina seriously injured. Not even her stern father, a widowed veterinarian (Patrick McGoohan), can save the pet. Their only hope lies in a mysterious "witch" and the healing power of love. Conjuring up both tears and laughter, this tender film has a magical charm that will linger long in your heart.

5 out of 5 stars Best of the Best .......2007-03-09

At last! This classic story of a motherless Scottish child's love for her pet and the battle of her heart-broken veterinarian father is now preserved for us on DVD. The performances of Susan Hampshire and Patrick McGoohan and magical young Karen Dotrice are unequalled in children's film to this day. Treat yourself to a wee trip to Scotland today and watch Thomasina.

The movie was easy to order and was received shortly there after, and was in excellent shape.

5 out of 5 stars Cat lovers delight!.......2007-01-29

I have loved this movie since I was a little girl. It wonderfully captures the loving bond between a cat and it's owner.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming Family Entertainment.......2007-01-19

This is another of my childhood favorites. I never thought I would be able to find it on DVD. This is definitely a film to add to your collection.

4 out of 5 stars Still a favorite.......2007-01-18

I remembered this movie from my childhood. So I ordered it for my grandchild (age 3). She absolutely loves "the cat movie" and asks to watch it over and over. Appropriate films seem to be difficult to find for a young child who does not care for animation.

Like, radical, dude--but not nearly as funny as it should be, even though it was a box-office hit. Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter are a pair of dim Valley boys, whose life is made heinous by a school history project. Enter George Carlin as a futuristic dude with a time-traveling phone booth. So Bill and Ted go back in time to round up a gang of historical figures (Socrates, Joan of Arc) to bring back for their presentation. Abe Lincoln at the mall? That's about as witty as it gets, rendering this the kind of comedy that gives teenaged audiences a bad name. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

Description

Keanu Reeves (The Matrix) and Alex Winter (The Lost Boys) deliver "spirited performances" (The Hollywood Reporter) in the original righteous comedy about the two ditzy dudes from San Dimas, California. Also starring George Carlin, this hysterically funny historical comedy is a "snappily directed" (Time), "bouncy good time" (The Boston Globe) and a party that goes on and on! Bill (Winter) and Ted (Reeves) have spent so much time forming their rock band, The Wyld Stallyns, that they're flunking history. Whoa, duuuude! And when Ted's dad threatens to send him away to military school, Bill and Ted realize it could mean the most heinous end of The Stallyns! Luckily, a guardian angel from the future, Rufus (Carlin), has come to them with a most bodacious solution: a time-traversing phone booth to take them into the past to learn about the world from some of history's most influential personalities. Their journey through time turns out to be a blastÂ...but will they learn enough to pass their class?

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I always liked it..........2007-05-16

I'm not sure I understand why a few people here seem to be upset that a) the two main characters are totally moronic and goofy. They're -supposed- to be. They're supposed to be the type of kids you laughed at in school because they were just such losers (but hey, loveable anyway)

b) That's not what would 'really' happen if such characters from history met! Of course it isn't! This movie wasn't made to be a history lesson any more than 300 was. It's supposed to be all out silly. I suppose if you can't let yourself just be silly a while, you won't enjoy the movie.

That being said, I think it -does- help if you grew up with the movie (I first saw it when I was 8 or 9 I think... ) and know the nostalgia behind such phrases as ' radical dude' and all that really awful 80's Valley Slang. Watching it now, almost 20 years later, it's even more amusing because I remember my friends and I thinking Bill and Ted were awesome and copied them using such words as 'Bogus' and whatever. Kids of a newer generation or people that weren't really growing up in that era might not find it so charming or a trip down pleasant childhood lane... but hey, for those of us who did grow up with it, most everyone I know loves the movie for what it was. Stupid, silly, entertaining.

Plus the part where they introduce Ghengis Khan as Bob Genghis Khan always made me laugh.

5 out of 5 stars A true classic.......2007-05-13

I can't get enough of this film...I still laugh throughout the film to this day...ziggy piggy ziggy piggy LMAO! I can't imagine why anyone would rate this below 4 stars. It's an 80's classic that hopefully someday I can share with my children if I have any in the future.

The popular children's books by Mary Norton have been filmed before, but never with as much imagination and ingenuity as you'll find on display in this delightful fantasy film released to critical praise in 1998. The "Borrowers" of the title are a family of tiny people who live in the walls and under the floorboards in the homes of "normal-sized" humans; they earn their by "borrowing" the household items (string, food crumbs, buttons, etc.) needed to furnish their tiny hiding places and provide their meals. The little Clock family lives happily undisturbed in the home of an aged aunt, but when the aunt dies and her will is stolen by an unscrupulous lawyer (John Goodman), the Clocks face eviction and the frightening hazards of the outside world. Under the ingenious direction of Peter Hewitt, this simple, straightforward movie mixes comedy, adventure, and suspense with some of the cleverest special effects you've ever seen, taking full advantage of effects technologies to immerse you in the world of the tiny people. A climactic chase scene in a milk-bottling plant is a visual tour de force, and the movie's smart and dazzling enough to entertain parents and children alike. After its modest success in theaters, <I>The Borrowers</I> stands a good chance of becoming a home-video favorite. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

4 out of 5 stars The Borrowers--Good entertainment.......2007-05-09

If you have a cold, rainy Saturday afternoon, and everyone's sitting around looking dejected and bored, here's what you do. Make a huge bowl of popcorn, drag out the old blankets and make a tent on floor in front of the TV. Pop in "The Borrowers," and snuggle with each other.

It's a wonderful movie with just enough good-guys-and-bad-guys, suspense, adventure, and laughter for all ages.

The Borrowers are little people. Really little. About the size of mice, really. They live in the walls and under the floors of a house, co-existing with humans who never can figure out where stuff goes missing. The humans are being evicted by a greedy bad guy (a lawyer) who wants to make a condominium. The Borrowers take an interest and help the humans to save their home.

Great fun for everyone! I highly recommend "The Borrowers."

4 out of 5 stars this is a good movie.......2007-03-24

This is a good movie and it came very quick.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2006-11-10

I had read The Borrowers in a magazine installment with my Great Grandmother. Then, I could hardly wait for the next month's magazine installment to arrive. I then reread the books with my daughter [who is now 32 years old] when she was about 12 years old. We wanted to share this DVD of The Borrowers with her son, my 4 year old grandson. That is why I purchased this item. We FORCED ourselves to watch almost half of the DVD, and then we all said, "Yes, let's shut it off." And we haven't watched any more of it. This new version is very contrived, with not much connection to the original story! I would like to perhaps buy a copy of the old original version sometime, but this version has soured me for a while on The Borrowers.

4 out of 5 stars wonderful tale.......2006-03-19

This is a wonderful interpertation of the book. Very entertaining. My only complaint is the muted lighting but that is minor. Acting, costumes, excellent.

4 out of 5 stars borrowers review.......2005-10-15

The borrower is a good movie I think it is cool to watch. It is about tiny people that borrower from humans. They aren't supposed to be seen and a young boy tries to find out why his things go missing. It is good because you can watch it over and over again and not get board.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is the best movie of this series... I love it!.......2007-03-11

The video quality of this DVD is reason enough to give it 5 stars. They definately used good cameras to film this movie, and it shows in this DVD. So it's unusually good for an 80's movie. The only extras are trailers. And yes, I could watch this movie over and over, espically the last half hour. The scenes where someone tries to steal his car and his camera are priceless too.

3 out of 5 stars My least favorite of the series.......2006-12-01

Of all the Death Wish movies, this one is my least favorite. Though Bronson's performance is fine and consistent as always, the other actors in this film are mostly not very good.

For one thing, there isn't much plot in this film. Its like a big excuse to have Bronson shoot people.

The bad guys in this film are 80's punks. Well, I used to be one of those back then and frankly, this movie portrays punks in a rediculous way. If anyone actually walked around looking as bad as these people do, they'd have been laughed out of the Village! Plus, they all look much too old to be acting like a bunch of teenage thugs, so instead of seeming threatening, they're like mentally challenged, homeless idiots. The leader of the gang, especially so. Its completely not believable, all the way down to the idea that these weirdos would actually be living in that horrible section of what I believe was Brooklyn in abandoned buildings. Its also rediculous that they would come into people's apartments on a regular basis and steal from them.

The cops are as unbelievable as the punks and the most annoying character of all was a little old lady with a super-annoying fake accent! She and everyone else kept referring to the gang as "creeps" and nobody says that in a more annoying voice than this old lady did. Between that voice and her stupid grimaces, I wished Bronson would have put her out of her misery along with the gang members.

Frankly, this movie is comical and rediculous. Tons of shooting but little plot or substance. I would have given it no stars if Bronson wasn't in it, but his performance is worth the 3 stars I gave this film.

Buy it used as cheap as you can. Its not worth full price.

4 out of 5 stars "Who's Wildey?".......2006-11-01

They just don't make movies like this anymore.

The third entry of this excessively violent series has our
man Kersey on his way to visit his ol' buddy Charlie, who just
happens to live in an extremely seedy neighborhood overrun by
coked-out gang members with too much time on their hands. As soon
as Kersey gets off the bus he is bumped by a few gang members,
apparently this man attracts street trash like a magnet. Never
getting a moments peace, Kersey listens over the phone as
his old friend's insides are pulverized into mush.

Kersey apparently entered New York with his luckless buddy Murphy as
he steps into his murdered friend's apartment only to be
quickly apprehended by the local authorities. Enter the rights
violating police chief, whom gives Paul an ultimatum:
either help them clean up the streets or spend the rest of
his life behind bars. Of course he chooses the
former -- hell, heads need to roll for the death of Charlie.

Soon, Kersey is welcomed by a few of the warm-hearted,
victimized tenants that each have their own grievances
to share. Little time is spent fraternizing for Kersey has
an obligation to fill; to fill with bullets. One of the
most comical moments is when Kersey non-chalantly gets up
from a Jewish couples' dinner table to deal with a few
lowlifes attempting to steal his car. The dialogue is classic.
This overtly defying act gets the attention of the gang leader
who soon declares war on Kersey, the downtrodden tenants of the
rundown building and anyone casually walking home carrying a
bag full of groceries.

Our man actually manages to fit in a little romance
in between filling punks with lead. An aggressive lawyer quickly
becomes infatuated with Kersey soon after his release from
jail. She literally travels to the same crime-filled neighborhood
that Charlie died in so she could ask the infamous vigilante out to dinner.
Unfortunately she was unaware that it doesn't pay to know Paul Kersey, and she learns this lesson painfully. The romance seemed too forced and awkward and the director obviously seen fit to end it
abruptly. This loss however is no real heartache for our
desensitized hero for it took time out of his murderous schedule.

Soon after, a war breaks out as the streets are inundated
by gang members shooting civilians and cops as Keresy makes his
own giant holes in any fool even resembling a gangster. It truly
becomes an action parody in the latter parts of this film.

There are no bonus features worth mentioning. All we get
is the original theatrical trailer. Hopefully some time
in the near future we will see a Special Collector's Edition.

4 out of 5 stars Violent. Violent. Violent. And Funny........2006-10-15

DEATH WISH 3 is, for its time, an extremely violent movie. Paul Kersey (Charles Bronson) is a seemingly placid soul who goes about killing several hundred thugs and crooks in 1980's NYC. The "plot" finds Kersey returning to NYC where he visits an old war buddy, whom Kersey finds dying on his apartment floor, a victim of intruding gangs. Having lost his friend, Kersey decides to move into his buddy's old apartment and take up a war against the gangs overrunning the neighborhood. I wouldn't even say this is a tale of revenge, because you never get the sense that Kersey gives a damn about his friend's death. It's basically an invitation to kill, something Kersey accepts when a police commissioner asks for "help" in thinning out the criminal herds.

Kersey, a character born from the "silent majority" of the Nixon Era, has no character arc, no narrative, no place to go where he will eventually find peace. This movie is a showcase for violence-- funny, absurd, over-the-top violence. Whether on purpose or not, there are several classic moments that make this movie worthwhile. And Bronson's deadpan delivery makes his sparse dialogue memorable. This is crude, terrible filmmaking that I greatly enjoyed to the very end.

4 out of 5 stars Cidade de Kersey, or the Problem with Being Pally with Paul.......2006-08-19

For Death Wish 3, director Michael Winner knew he couldn't just follow the same template he had on the first two films. It had worked for those, especially as the first was a bit rough, feeling a bit like trying to find one's way in the darkness, and the second almost perfected the formula, even if that meant stumbling into a contradictorily attractive sewer. Of course, Death Wish 3 still basically a revenge flick featuring Charles Bronson as Paul Kersey, an oddly charismatic architect turned vigilante taking out hordes of theatrical punks, but Winner expands on the previous films here, bringing in allusions to other genres and films, and giving Death Wish 3 added thematic and emotional dimensions.

One of the new dimensions may have been somewhat unintentional, but it's one of my favorite modes, so it worked extremely well for me--an absurdist humor that stems from the context of all three Death Wish films as a continual story. By this point in the series, Kersey has such incredibly bad luck--it seems that to be or become chummy with him in any way is virtually a death sentence--that it is hilarious. This aspect is amplified by the fact that Bronson deadpans his way through the film. So when he expresses hesitation for a romantic relationship because of past events, and both reassurance and disaster quickly follow, it's as funny as tragic in context of the three films. Winner also incorporates a lot of intentional humor and irony as the film progresses.

Winner doesn't caricature his crime-ridden city as much as he did previously, but his gangs, or at least some gang members, still have a bit of Broadway to them. However, it's much easier to take the setting's anarchic state seriously, especially since Death Wish 3 is set in Brooklyn (the East New York section) during the tail end of its worst crime period. There is a bit of the feel and probably an influence from The Warriors (1979) here.

The major way that Winner breaks his previous plot template is that this time most of Kersey's Brooklyn neighbors join in the fray. The idea is a lot of fun. It not only gives us a couple handfuls of attractive, new characters to root for, but it gives Death Wish 3 the opportunity to mix its usual mood with elements from both war films and westerns. The Mad Max films (1979 and 1981) also seem to have been an influence, and Aliens (1986) was to expand its plot in a similar way the following year.

To make the war-like scope of Death Wish 3 believable, Winner also makes the smart move of putting the head of police, Richard S. Shriker (Ed Lauter), on Kersey's side, after a pleasantly gritty and surprising opening that first has them at loggerheads.

Winner was also smart to retain most of Jimmy Page's score for Death Wish 2. That it's the same score isn't at all a minus, as Page primarily composed a series of leitmotifs for characters and moods, so they serve to give Death Wish 3 a more solid continuity from the previous film. The additional music here, which wasn't by Page, isn't nearly as good, which is making me a bit anxious about Death Wish 4, because Page's music was dropped there.

For me, this is an odd series to this point because of the continual rise in the series' quality. I still have never watched Death Wish 4 or 5, so it will be interesting to see if the series can continue the trend. There isn't much further up to go.

Released in 1961--the same year as <I>The Absent-Minded Professor</I> and <I>The Parent Trap</I>--<I>Greyfriars Bobby</I> epitomizes the heart-on-its-sleeve sentimentality that was the special preserve of the Disney Studio. Based on a true story, the film follows the adventures of a wee Skye terrier who refuses to be separated from his master, even in death. Bobby sleeps on the old man's grave in the cemetery of Greyfriars church; he won't be driven away by Mr. Brown, the groundskeeper (Donald Crisp), or adopted by Mr. Trail (Laurence Naismith), the kindly restaurant owner. Bobby wins over both men, as well as the children in the neighborhood tenements. When a priggish policeman charges Mr. Trail with harboring an unlicensed stray, the case becomes a tempest in a dog dish. <I>Greyfriars Bobby</I> offers handsome vistas of Edinburgh; however, even at 91 minutes the pace is meandering. Crisp and Naismith offer engaging performances as the reluctant friends (and rivals for Bobby's affection), but everyone speaks with such thick Scottish burrs it's like attending Groundskeeper Willie's family reunion. Suitable for all ages. <I>--Charles Solomon</I>

GREYFRIARS BOBBY: THE TRUE STORY OF A DOG (1961) Directed by Don Chaffey, Based on the book by Eleanor Atkinson. Cinematography by Paul Beeson. Produced by Walt Disney.
Starring Laurence Naismith, Freda Jackson and Donald Crisp.
The true story, set in 1865 Edinborough, of a cute terrier named Bobby who, when his master dies, sleeps every night at the grave. In the daytime, he spreads happiness and joy among lonely bachelors, a childless couple and the neighborhood's poor children. However when the bad people want to take Bobby away because he does not have a license, a trial ensues that will prove to be one of the greatest in the history of Western jurisprudence. Will the dirty [...]. kill Bobby or will justice triumph??
A lowkey, somewhat sad but charming Disney film with gorgeous cinematography, solid direction, a good script and a solid cast of welcome faces. It occurs that there is a scene in the Karlolf/lugosi film THE BODY SNATCHER that is a nasty bad joke based on the story of Bobby. Naismith was also in the excellent JASON AND THE ARGONAUTS(which Chaffey also directed) and SCROOGE. Jackson in BRIDES OF DRACULA and Crisp...nearly the end of a long career appeared in everything from Griffith silent classics such as BROKEN BLOSSOMS to myriad highly regarded John Ford pictures and the horror classic THE UNINVITED. So this is not some kiddie film with a cast of unknowns going nowhere.
An unheralded effort by Disney that sadly was not a box office success. However well worth seeing in any case. A likable film on every level.

Delighted that a film has been made of this wonderful story. A real tear jerker

4 out of 5 stars Touching Dog Story.......2007-01-30

Old Jock worked as a shepherd for many years. Unfortunately, the master of the farm can no longer afford to keep Old Jock on. Old Jock heads to Edinburgh to an uncertain future, leaving his dog Bobby behind to be the dog of his master's daughter. Bobby has other ideas and follows Old Jock off to Edinburgh. To use a cliché, the rest is history.

We know that Old Jock is sick at the beginning of the movie. He has a persistent cough that must be an indication of something bad. After his arrival in Edinburgh he has the good fortune to meet with Mr. Traill, who owns a tavern. Old Jock also has the good fortune to encounter Bobby, who has been looking for him everywhere. Mr. Traill tries to get a doctor to see to Old Jock, but Old Jock associates doctors and infirmaries with dying, so he disappears into the rain before the doctor arrives. Old Jock eventually finds a room at a cheap inn with a leaking roof and a screechy old woman as the proprietress. Old Jock plays with Bobby one last time before falling into a sleep from which he will never arise.

A problem arises immediately. Where is Old Jock's Skye Terrier Bobby to live? Bobby knows only one master, Old Jock, and he sleeps now in Greyfriars Kirkyard (which means a church yard). There is trouble for Bobby to stay in the Kirkyard. Mr. Brown, the caretaker of Greyfriars Kirkyard, will not permit a dog to stay in the Kirkyard. What no one has reckoned with is the power of Bobby's pure love and the effect it has on everyone who meets him.

"Greyfriars Bobby" is a marvelous Disney film that captures all the things we love most about animals and dogs in particular. Some animals just seem to capture our hearts with their single-minded devotion, and certainly everyone, including the Provost of Edinburgh and the population of Edinburgh, felt Bobby's love. I certainly got a warm feeling as I watched this movie. I am glad that this movie is part of my collection and I look forward to watching it again.

This movie contains quite a few well-known actors. Donald Crisp played Mr. Brown. Crisp also appeared in "Spencer's Mountain," "Pollyanna," "A Dog of Flanders" (1960), "National Velvet" and many more. Laurence Naismith played Mr. Traill. Naismith made a number of television appearances in the 1960's and 1970's. He also appeared in the James Bond movie "Diamonds Are Forever," "Sink the Bismarck," "Boy on a Dolphin," and dozens of other films. Alex MacKenzie played Old Jock (whose real name was John Gray). Mackenzie has a relatively short career, but he appeared in two other Disney films in the early 1960's: "Kidnapped" and "The Three Lives of Thomasina." Many of the other actors also had long and successful acting careers, including Duncan McRae, Gordon Jackson, Freda Jackson, Joyce Carey, Jameson Clark, and Bruce Seton.

Historical Note: There is a statue to Bobby located at the corner of King George IV Bridge and Candlemaker's Row. Bobby was a real dog who watched over his master's grave for fourteen years after his death. The movie did take a number of liberties with Bobby's story, but those liberties did a nice job of capturing the feeling of Bobby's loyalty and love.

"Greyfriars Bobby" captures all the magic that Walt Disney could put into a film inspired by a true story. This film is suitable for every member of the family and every family should have this film in their library.

Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars A British Disney classic.......2006-11-30

Greyfriars Bobby is a true life dog story. This isn't the shaggy dog, there is no Disney humor characters. This story of Bobby (a dog) whose Master died and the small town which adopted him. Its basicly unknown to American audences, British and Scotish cast is headed by actor Donald Crisp (from the film, The Great Escape)

This film is a simple tale that Disney film told in the late 1950-1960's. These sorta films were run as second features to the Disney cartoons when they were released to theaters.

You can see the great hand of walt himself at work. This simple tale has no special effects, just a story a family can watch together. I wish there were more of these type of classic film chestnuts from Disney available on DVD to watch today to share with the younger people

On the surface, Priscilla Chase (Parker Posey, Superman Returns) has it all: good job, stable marriage, attractive Cleveland abode. In truth, the smartly dressed ad exec is sexually unsatisfied. In fact, she's never experienced the "oh" of the title. Husband Jack (a scruffy Paul Rudd, The 40-Year-Old Virgin), high school bio teacher, has problems of his own. He's so unhappy with their lackluster sex life he's taken to drinking on the job. Priscilla sets out to overcome her dysfunction. That means trips to a therapist, a self-help guru (a blonde Liza Minnelli), and an adult toy shop (staffed by an unbilled Heather Graham). Eventually she finds a possible solution. All the while, Jack solicits advice from a smooth-talking colleague (Keith David in hilarious form) and spends time with precocious student Kristen (Mischa Barton, more construct than character). Then there's local celeb Wayne the Pool Guy (a ponytailed Danny DeVito), who fills an unexpected role in this passion play. Billy Kent's debut is pitched somewhere between Everything You Always Wanted to Know about Sex and an episode of Sex and the City. (The dialogue may be unbridled, but there's only a hint of flesh.) The main reason to see the film is simply for the star. From start to, um, finish, Posey is thoroughly charming, never overplaying the kind of role that could've been painful to watch in the hands of a lesser actress. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

1 out of 5 stars another film ruined by shoddy DVD manufacturing.......2007-03-22

This is a review of the OH IN OHIO DVD, rather than the film itself. It's also a warning.

I first rented OH IN OHIO from Netflix. The DVD kept skipping and stalling. I couldn't watch it all. I figured it was badly scratched. So I bought a new DVD from Amazon. It arrived looking pristine, still wrapped in celephone. I even played it on a different DVD player. Yet this DVD also SKIPPED AND STALLED!

My DVD player was even RUMBLING and GROANING when it tried to play this new DVD. And it's not the DVD player, because when I put in another DVD, it had no trouble.

Seems OH IN OHIO went through some pretty shoddy DVD manufacturing "quality control."

Why do SO MANY DVDs skip and stall? And if DVDs are so fragile, why don't CDs and CD-ROMs have this problem?

In the 1980s, VIDEO magazine published a theory that the studios were releasing poor quality VHS tapes because they didn't want consumers to build longterm libraries. That makes sense.

Remember, the studios never wanted to sell their movies, they only wanted to rent tapes to video stores. It was a series of court cases in the 1970s/80s concerning antitrust, restraint of trade, and fair use in copyright (such as the Sony Betamax case) that barred the studios from restricting the trade of independent video stores.

Yet the studios made a bundle when people built tape libraries. Another bundle now that people are replacing their fragile tapes with fragile DVDs.

I can see why the studios don't want to manufacture decent quality DVDs, lest consumers have permanent movies floating around for decades. Studios earn nothing on the sale of used DVDs. Better for them to manufacture fragile DVDs that won't last, so consumers will more easily replace their scratchy DVDs when the next format comes along.

I'm really tired of SO MANY DVDs skipping and stalling. I wish there was more consumer outrage against these crappy studio practices.

Based on what I could see of OH IN OHIO, Parkey Posey is pretty and delightful, although the film is fluffy and lightweight, unlike her darker 1990s comedies (i.e., HOUSE OF YES, CLOCKWATCHERS).

My one star is no slam on Posey, nor even on the film. It refers to the crappy DVD.

IMPORTANT: Google "DVD rot". You'll be surprised and disheartened by what you'll find.

4 out of 5 stars Sex Has Come Between Us! (3.5 Stars).......2007-02-22

"The Oh in Ohio" is a self-assured slice of life that can touch viewers while disconcerting them all the while. Its comedic aspirations don't come to full fruition and its screenplay is a tad undercooked, but the actors overcome this with suave, easy charm.

Poking sly, understated fun at the overemphasis of sex in society, it is neither for the prudish nor for those who need slapstick to find humor. Sex may be the centrifugal force of the film, but this is no "40-Year Old Virgin," even though Paul Rudd plays similarly sympathetic characters in each.

Priscilla Chase, played by Parker Posey, is an ambitious, ditzy woman on the fast track to large-scale corporate success. However, to the dismay of her schoolteacher husband Jack, played by Rudd, she is the consummate cold fish. She may know the exact number of times they've had sex, but she has never had a single orgasm - ever - due to a "sexual dysfunction." Nor does she seem interested in doing so soon.

Things go up in smoke. She may have caused the problem, but Jack cannot get past the fact that the one woman he has not satisfied in bed is his wife of ten years. After moving to the garage and confiding in his friend and colleague Popovitch, played with cheeky delight by Keith David, he finally begins a full-fledged separation from Priscilla when she becomes overly addicted to a vaginal vibrator. He moves to the Manly Arms apartment complex - "Why settle for the mundane when you can be the king of your domain?" - and gives in to the advances of sophisticated 18-year old student Kristen, played perfectly by Mischa Barton, who lost her innocence long before he came along.

Priscilla is thus left to find her sexual identity. She pursues sex with random men, but she finds it unsatisfying. Sex with sex shop clerk Justine, played by Heather Graham, doesn't do the trick either. Wayne the Pool Guy, played with zest and warmth by Danny DeVito, however, puts an entirely new spin on things, awakening "parts of Cleveland" she never knew existed. In Wayne she finds

Liza Minelli is a hoot in her scene as an overzealous sex therapist, and Posey really brings it home when Jack finally gives Priscilla the satisfaction that was missing from their bedroom by merely calling her cell phone during, of all moments, an important board meeting. It's where the phone specifically is, of course, that matters.

"The Oh In Ohio" is equal parts raunchy and touching as it cloaks its characters in genuine humanity. Sex may come between them, but it's who they are, not what they are, that matters in the end.

4 out of 5 stars O as in Orgasm....even in Ohio ............2007-02-12

You have to take this with a grain of salt. Full disclosure, I'm from Cleveland originally so I had a ball watching this satire. That's what it is -- don't take it for a comedy or a drama...it's a satire and a bit of a black comedy. Subtitled one woman's story is about to climax. About Parker Posey's sexual dysfunction, it's both naughty and nice. Danny DeVito is hilarious....the section of the movie where there's a slide into the pool is a good analogy for the theme which is about the quest for not only the big O but also personal fulfillment. Paul Rudd lets Parker take the lead, Mischa Barton is sweet and savvy and very sexy. And it proves that all is not perfect with the prettiest girl in Cleveland even when you marry her. Don't miss the hilarious and deleted scenes....completely mindless popcorn movie...for late night viewing instead of HSN....

2 out of 5 stars When Sex is All that Matters..........2007-01-28

THE OH IN OHIO reminds us that late night suggestive sitcoms are still around only now they are becoming full length feature films: 20 minutes worth of idea becomes stretched beyond the elastic point in this silly and oh-so-pink little bit of fluff. First time director Billy Kent and writer Sarah Bird with assistance from Kent somehow managed to not only get producers to pay attention to their project but also attracted some good actors to try to pull it off. 'Money makes the world go around...'

The plot is minimal: Parker Posey plays successful business woman Priscilla Chase who is known for her beauty, is married to a Biology teacher Jack Chase (Paul Rudd) who is on the skids from depression over the fact that his machismo is daily challenged by the fact the Priscilla has never had an orgasm. This fact somehow demeans Jack who has always bragged about his triumphs in bed but his career and self-esteem are in a pit due to Priscilla's sexual dysfunction. Priscilla attends a sex therapy session for women hosted by none other than Liza Minnelli where she is encouraged to get to know her vagina. At the suggestion from Priscilla's friend Sherri (Miranda Bailey) concurrently with Jack's friend Coach Popovich (Keith David) and the counsel of a therapist, Priscilla buys a vibrator and the story from then on is how Priscilla's new-found satisfaction alters her life, pushes Jack into the arms of a student (Mischa Barton), and on and on with Priscilla finding outlets for her discovery with a sex toys salesgirl, a pool guy (Danny DeVito). Everything about Priscilla and Jack is changed and for the rest of what's left of the standup comedy routine viewers will have to decide if they care to watch the DVD.

About the only thing that pulls this together is Parker Posey, unafraid to take on a script that asks her to demean herself in the process. This is definitely one of those films to perhaps rent when the video store shelves are empty. Grady Harp, January 07

By the time the pair of bloodshot, gun-toting, Rastafarian eyeballs appears, you know you're witnessing the birth of a new cult film. In the delirious <I>Freaked</I>, a sleazy multinational corporation hires a spoiled-rotten former child star named Ricky Coogin (Alex Winter, <I>Bill & Ted's Excellent Adventure</I>) to be the spokesman for a toxic biochemical fertilizer. When Ricky goes down to the poverty-stricken third world country where the toxin is used, he---along with his best friend and a comely anti-corporate activist (Megan Ward, <I>Joe's Apartment</I>)--get sidetracked to a freakshow presented by the flamboyant Elijah C. Skuggs (Randy Quaid, <I>Kingpin</I>). But Skuggs doesn't just display freaks, he <I>creates</I> them, and Ricky is going to be his masterpiece. This is only the beginning of a crass, tasteless, and hysterical (in both senses of the word) movie. Co-writer/co-director Winter and his pals pile on joke after idiosyncratic joke (clearly influenced by the shotgun-style humor of <I>Airplane!</I> and <I>Mad</I> magazine). You can feel that they fell all over themselves with laughter when they conceived each bit--no tepid Hollywood committee would have turned a movie's love interest into a double-gendered conjoined twin or cast Mr. T as a Bearded Lady, along with such an eclectic bunch as Bobcat Goldthwait, Brooke Shields, and an uncredited Keanu Reeves. <I>Freaked</I> is clearly a labor of love that deserves to find its infatuated audience. This dvd features a bushel of extras, including some unjustly deleted scenes. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Description

A company that produces a toxic chemical tries to improve its image via popular spokesperson, Ricky Coogan. Ricky travels to South America to get a first-hand look at the chemical's effects and finds himself at a mutant freak farm. Elijah, who runs the farm, is only too happy to have new subjects on which to try his freak machine. The very chemical that Ricky is supposed to promote is the one responsible for creating the great variety of freaks.

5 out of 5 stars Those who ignore this film will stand knee deep in the blood of their children.......2006-06-02

Despite being one of the most overlooked and underpromoted films upon its release in 1993, most of the cult following for FREAKED never saw the film until much later. This hysterical debut feature from Tom Stern and Alex Winter began life with plenty of promise: a funny script, two talented up-and-coming comedy directors, a great ensemble cast, plenty of shock value, and even cross-promotion merchandising (HIDEOUS MUTANT FREEKZ action figures made their way to stores before the film's title was changed, and are now considered valuable collectors items). However, the film was shuffled into obscurity thanks to a change in the corporate leadership of Twentieth Century Fox. FREAKED had only a limited theatrical release and little fanfare when it finally hit home video.

FREAKED is the tale of one-time child actor (and full time jerk), Ricky Coogan (Winter) who makes a Faustian deal with the EES (Everything Except Shoes) Corporation to promote a dangerous chemical fertilizer, Zygrot 23, in the South American country of Santa Flan. Joined by his horn dog buddy Ernie (Michael Stoyanov) and perky environmentalist Julie (Megan Ward), the trio happen upon a freak show only to become part of the act thanks to the handiwork of evil Elijah C. Skuggs (Randy Quaid), a crazed ringmaster who creates new freaks using--what else--Zygrot 23.

And that's just the first act of the film! If you're at all familiar with Winter and Stern's earlier short films (SQUEAL OF DEATH), then you may have an inkling as to what a treat FREAKED is. The humor is extremely twisted and the sight gags and jokes just keep coming. Once transformed into freaks, Ricky, Ernie, and Julie befriend a cast of characters that include psychic trolls, Rastafarian eyeballs with legs, down-trodden wrenches, a giant worm, a woman played by Mr. T (playing himself, only female), and Bobcat Goldthwaite playing a freak with the body of a man but the head of a sock-pocket. The freaks must band together to escape from Skuggs and stop the spread of Zygrot 23 before the world is overrun by more freaks. The movie boasts cameos from Keanu Reeves, Brooke Shields, Morgan Fairchild, Butthole Surfers frontman Gibby Haines, and Calvert DeForest (AKA Larry "Bud" Melman).

5 out of 5 stars Freakin' A+.......2006-01-17

Why do I give this movie five stars? Because it is funny. That's all. I really liked it. The story is bizarre, the writing the height of silliness, and the acting intentionally goofy. It's also got a fair amount of gross out humor, which I usually don't enjoy. But in this case I'm willing to make an exception.

There's some great extras as well, surprising for a low budget, forgotten film like this. They're not all great, but they're still included. That's pretty cool.

The favorite part for me is seeing William Sadler, Keanu Reeves, and Randy Quaid acting in this strange film. Sadler as head of the EES corporation has perhaps the greatest evil line ever uttered by a ruthless bad guy.

Freaked is sort of a cross between Mad magazine, Monty Python, and Airplane. It won't appeal to everyone, but it's still pretty damn funny after all these years. Rent it before you buy it if you want to play it safe.

2 out of 5 stars This movie is a bad as it gets.......2006-01-16

I can't believe Hollywood would make such a film as Freaked. It should be called "Boring", and a waste of time and money.

Their is no plot, and it just rambles along. The Attack of the Killer Tomatoes at least had some suspense to it. Despite the big name actors in this --it goes nowhere. If you like movies made for celebral pygmies then maybe you like Freaked.

4 out of 5 stars in a sea of cookie cutter movies, one stands out.......2005-10-12

I love this movie, the crude humor, tasteless action and complete misuse of quality actors, shows promise in hollywood. I never laughed so hard, and when i can't take it anymore, they come with that right hook that some comedy writers fear to go. Alex Winter, may have sold his soul with Keanue Reeves in Bill and Ted, but he regained it with this beautiful piece of art. I wished more Brooke Sheilds in the movie, but hey, I am gonna take it that the budget was pretty much blown on her little role. Mr. T, now there is a man who doesn't take himself to serious. All and all, one of my favorite movies.
