Frequency is really two different--though inextricably linked--movies. First, the emotional drama of a father and son reunited after 30 years of separation. Then there's a science fiction thriller, in which a couple of chance solar storms, occurring exactly 30 years apart, can provide the agency through which the father and son can communicate using the very same ham radio in parallel time frames of 1969 and 1999. The son is John Sullivan (Jim Caviezel), a cop, and his father is Frank (Dennis Quaid), a firefighter who died on the job when John was 6, which just happens to be tomorrow for Frank when he and his now-adult son begin talking across time. This is great for John, because now he can warn his dad about the upcoming fire and avert the catastrophe that left him fatherless for most of his life. Accomplishing this gives John new memories of his life with Dad, but unfortunately alters the course of a serial killer, with tragic effect on John's family history. Since John's a cop, and the case he's working on turns out to be the same unsolved case from 30 years before, he and his father work together over the ham radio to solve the case and hopefully avert the tragedy that befell their family.
Time-travel stories have always been problematic, demanding either an extra degree of credulity on the part of the audience or an extra level of explanation on the part of storytellers, which is invariably cumbersome. Frequency handles the troublesome time paradoxes by having John explain how, having altered his past, he now experiences both timelines, as if he's had two pasts that converge in his present. And as changes continue to be wrought in John's past, we see him becoming more and more confused. No doubt the audience can sympathize, at least those of us who try to follow the ramifications of the rapidly accruing time fractures. Luckily, the bond between father and son is so strongly realized in the deeply felt performances of both Caviezel and Quaid that you don't even need to consider the science fiction elements in order to enjoy the film. But if you can suspend your disbelief long enough to allow for the possibility of time shifts, you'll have a far richer experience. --Jim Gay

Making it Right.......2007-06-18
Frequency is a remarkable movie. I just discovered it and am glad to see that others continue to add their comments here. First, I must applaud the premise - the use of a ham radio as the device that connects father and son in a supernatural way. My uncle was a ham radio operator and even taught classes. It had a tremendous mystique all its own.
Dennis Quaid is fabulous. He effortlessly portrays Frank Sullivan, a man who is passionate about his values, devoted to his family, and larger than life as a fireman. The movie opens to this father's heroic rescue of a pair of workers trapped underground after a tanker crash. He comes right home to the wife he loves, the son he loves -- John, his "Little Chief" -- in the home he loves; he has it all. Moving forward thirty years, we meet the adult John. James Caviezel tears me to pieces in these early scenes as we learn that this father died in a fire 30 years ago. John is a cop working homicide. He is still living in the house he grew up in. He did not completely recover from his father's death. He drinks to find numbness and his girlfriend (who he loves) walks out on him. But he is a good man in his own right. His mother's phone number is on his speed-dial and he takes the time to stay involved in her life. On this difficult night in October 1999, as he approaches the anniversary of his father's death, his childhood friend Gordo (Noah Emmerich - The Truman Show) helps set up his father's old ham radio that they find looking for fishing gear under the stairs. Later, with the aurora borealis glistening overhead, father and son make contact on this radio over the distance of 30 years. Awesome! My favorite scene on the DVD is captioned "Catching Up," and takes place after a skeptical Frank, up to his ears in smoke and flames, follows his son's frantic warning that he should "go the other way" to safety rather than the death that John remembered. On returning home unscathed, Frank, accidentally wakes his six-year old son, evolving into a joyous bike-riding lesson. He then finds adult John's voice on the ham and they catch up. At one point, Frank asks adult John if he is still his "Little Chief" and James Caviezel's tearful reply "I'm trying to be" is profound. Dennis Quaid and James Caviezel run with their roles here. They are two great American actors at work.
The entire cast is wonderful. Elizabeth Mitchell as wife and mother plays so much love and strength into her role. The screenplay, by Toby Emmerich, brother of Noah, is tight, tender and imaginative. (The brothers do a great commentary together on the DVD special features.) The crime-thriller sub-plot is gripping and the ending satisfying.
Let's rewrite H.G. Wells.......2007-06-16
A thriller that associates many interesting elements. First a serial killer, running after him, trying to stop him, in the radical way of today, a good self-defense shot. Then a fireman (yes not very politically correct: firefighter it should have been, but in 1969...) father and heroism, and dying on duty. Then a nurse mother, which is rather banal but explains the overworking schedule of the mother and the over-protective attitude. Then a time warp that happens in a strange way, through an old radio from the time before transistors and computers, with beautiful lamps and diodes. The orphaned son of the fireman father in 1999 gets in contact through this radio with his father in 1969 or about and they try to stop the killer. After discovering he is a cop. And it works, and the past is changed, and the future of that past is changed, hence the past future is no longer what it could have been or should have been and is what we would have liked it to be. Father, son et grand son. Grandfather, father and son. Three generations instead of two and the orphaned son of the second generation no longer being unable to cope with starting the third generation. Typically American: the desire to change the past, the only thing you cannot change. The future? Maybe if you try hard, and yet without any guarantee. But the past, no way, no hope, and yet there is always an American somewhere who is trying and believing Auschwitz can disappear in thin air. But the most difficult part of the film is the constant shifting from one time to another without being very clear all the time where we stand or are. Except that we get confused after a while.

Outstanding movie. Thank you Amazon........2007-06-14
Though FREQUENCY is a bit old but has a brilliant story. Everything is perfect. I searched for the complete DVD in our local shops (in Sri Lanka) but couldn't find. You know, most of the movies are copies and they don't have the complete stuff (making the movie, discussions, deleted scenes, etc.).
About the service of Amazon, I should say THANK YOU. When I put my order it said that the item should arrive between June 14, 2007 - July 25, 2007 and I got it yesterday (June 13). Simply brilliant. This is my second order with Amazon and I will definitely continue.
Frequency.......2007-05-12
Frequency is a totally different story-line than the usual fair and
a much overlooked fantastic movie. It certainly never received the
attention it should have. It is a movie you'll never forget and
definately want to own. If it seems slow at the beginning, stay
with it -- it gets really dramatic and when you figure out what is
going on, you'll be intriqued. Great Movie!
My Alltime Favorite Movie!!!!!.......2007-05-08
This has to be the most underrated movie ever. It has incredible performances from two incredible actors (Dennis Quaid is awesome and Jim Caviezel is beyond awesome!!!) It keeps you on the edge of your seat nearly through the entire movie, and it has some awesome plot twists. I highly recommend this movie!!! Buy it because you will want to watch it again and again!
p.s. The music is also great! If you don't like the song "When You Come Back to Me Again", there is something wrong with you.

One of the very best films about the Civil War, this instant classic from 1989 is also one of the few films to depict the participation of African American soldiers in Civil War combat. Based in part on the books Lay This Laurel by Lincoln Kirstein and One Gallant Rush by Peter Burchard, the film also draws from the letters of Robert Gould Shaw (played by Matthew Broderick), the 25-year-old son of Boston abolitionists who volunteered to command the all-black 54th Regiment of the Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry. Their training and battle experience leads them to their final assault on Fort Wagner in South Carolina, where their heroic bravery turned bitter defeat into a symbolic victory that brought recognition to black soldiers and turned the tide of the war. With painstaking attention to historical detail and richness of character, the film boasts superior performances by Denzel Washington (who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor), Morgan Freeman, Cary Elwes, and Andre Braugher. Directed by Edward Zwick (co-creator of the TV series thirtysomething), this unforgettable drama is as important as Schindler's List in its treatment of a noble yet little-known episode of history. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Incredibly moving.......2007-06-13
It's been 15 years since I last saw this movie and was as excellent as I had remembered it. The movie is superbly cast and is beautifully written and directed. Of particular note are the sweeping vistas of the military gatherings. They're big and rich and really set the tone for the magnitude of a great war epic. It's a great picture and should be viewed by all to gain an appreciation for just how important the black military was in effecting the outcome of the Civil War.
The finest Civil War movie.......2007-05-18
Quite simply, this is the very best (by a long shot!) Civil War film ever made by anyone. It is the gold standard by which all other films of the era should be measured. Outstanding acting by all, brilliant direction, stunning visuals and music, if you haven't seen this yet, all I can say is don't wait any longer, see it now!!!
Completely satisfied, Excellent condition........2007-04-04
The product is excellent.
The condition represented online is what I received.
I am completely satisfied.
Thanks you,
Larry Tucker
This is the definition of a truly great war movie........2007-03-23
To be quite honest, I had low expectations for "Glory." It was just another boring day at school sitting in my history class drawing random drawings in my notebook. Suddenly my teacher says we're going to watch a movie. I wake up from my dreamy state and I decide I'll give it a chance. He loads the VCR tape into the machine and I fix my eyes upon the screen.
I will put "Glory" into a few words--this is what every war movie strives to be and beyond. Glory tells the story of a Civil War colonel (Matthew Broderick) who leads the war's first all-black volunteer regimen into battles and discovers along the way he has to confront the moral question of racial prejudice within, and outside of, his regimen.
So as I'm sitting in history class watching "Glory," I immediately begin to perk up. From the explosive first scene, I was fully awake. My luck skyrocketed when I discovered two of my all-time favorite actors in the film, Morgan Freeman and Denzel Washington. The movie progressed and I found myself becoming yet more and more drawn into the film--not just watching it, but actually EXPERIENCING every ounce of war, prejudice, and moral questions that face the characters in the movie.
What's even more, is that you find yourself becoming attached to ALL of the characters--every single black soldier--in some strange way, so strange, that when these men fall in battle you feel a jolt of power inside of you that is converted to emotional sadness in your mind.
The final scenes in Glory are mesmerizing. No, more than that--utterly spectacular. The final battle scene at Fort Wagner is so amazingly shot you will think you're actually there fighting along with the black regimen. You're not in your seat watching the film--you feel like you're there! The final battle scene is so spectacular, it will easily remain one of the most memorable battle scenes I've ever witnessed in all of film. After watching Glory, you will find yourself truly moved in all ways possible. You will almost feel like a new person.
All of this paired with a beautiful score by James Horner, Glory is simply one of the best war movies of all-time. Anyone who misses this film is missing out one of the most powerful, moving, and memorable experiences a movie can bring you.
I'm so glad I found myself in history this year.
Wonderfully acted and filmed..........2007-03-13
and mostly true, this look at the doomed black soldiers accepted into the Union Army during the waning days of the Civil War shouldn't be missed. Matthew Broderick gives perhaps his best performance, and the supporting cast is stupendous.

Clever twists and a bona fide surprise ending make this an above-average courtroom thriller, tapping into the post-O.J. scrutiny of our legal system in the case of a hotshot Chicago defense attorney (Richard Gere) whose latest client is an altar boy (Edward Norton) accused of murdering a Catholic archbishop. The film uses its own manipulation to tell a story about manipulation, and when we finally discover who's been pulling the strings, the payoff is both convincing and pertinent to the ongoing debate over what constitutes truth in the American system of justice. Making an impressive screen debut that has since led to a stellar career, Norton gives a performance that rides on a razor's edge of schizophrenic pathology--his role is an actor's showcase, and without crossing over the line of credibility, Norton milks it for all it's worth. Gere is equally effective in a role that capitalizes on his shifty screen persona, and Laura Linney and Frances McDormand give memorable performances in their intelligently written supporting roles. --Jeff Shannon

The Butcher Boy.......2007-05-18
I just recently seen this movie and I was completely blown away. Specifically by Edward Norton's performance. He is always an outstanding actor but in this movie he truly shines. Richard Gere doesn't do a bad job either. The movie has a great story line and it is the best courtroom drama I've ever seen.
Man questioned over vicar's death - Thursday, March 15, 2007 BBC News.......2007-03-16
A man is being questioned after a vicar was found stabbed to death in the grounds of his south Wales church.
Father Paul Bennett, 59, died at St Fagans Church in Trecynon, near Aberdare, Rhondda Cynon Taf.
The father-of-two and grandfather was found dead by his wife Georgina at about 1450 GMT on Wednesday.
A 23-year-old local man was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and is being questioned. Police said they were not looking for anyone else.
SOMETHING TO PONDER..........This movie is the first thing I thought of when I saw this headline.
Primal Fear.......2007-03-09
I enjoy mainly true stories, but this movie is excellent and as many movies I have watched over the years, the ending really surprised me.
Awesome..Wow!!.......2007-02-24
Edward Norton in his first movie, won a nomination for a supporting role at the Oscars? Is this true or is this true?
Even if it's not - then he definately deserved one - nomination,if not an Oscar.
Kudos to Edward Norton. And he followed it up soon,in another move by the name of 'Fight Club'.
A movie that will have you saying WOW!.......2007-01-12
In my opinion, this movie was Edward Norton's best performance (yes, even better than Fight Club). For a movie that will really leave you stunned, this is one great movie!

Some critics complained that City of Angels could never compare to Wim Wenders's exquisite German film Wings of Desire, which served as the later film's primary inspiration. The better argument to make is that any such comparisons are beside the point, because Wings of Desire was a much more deeply poetic, artfully contemplative film, whereas City of Angels is an enchanting product of mainstream Hollywood. Meg Ryan stars as Dr. Maggie Rice, a heart surgeon who is grieving over a lost patient when an angel named Seth (Nicolas Cage) appears to comfort her. She can see him despite the "rule" that angels are invisible, and Seth's love for Maggie forces him to choose between angelic immortality and a normal human existence on earth with her. Featuring heavenly roles for TV veterans Andre Braugher and Dennis Franz, the film liberally borrows imagery from Wings of Desire, but it also creates its own charming identity. Cage and Ryan give fine performances as lovers convinced they are soul mates, and although the plot relies on a last-minute twist that doesn't quite work, this earnest love story struck a chord with audiences and proved to be one of the surprise hits of 1998. The Special Edition widescreen DVD includes audio commentary by Nicolas Cage, producer Charles Roven, and director Brad Silberling in addition to deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes documentary, a featurette about the film's special effects, and the theatrical trailer. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Wings of Desire is better by far.......2007-05-16
"Wings of Desire" (the movie that "City of Angels" is loosely inspired upon), is a masterpiece and "City of Angels" is...is... how could I explain it not being too rude? It is just a piece of junk in comparison. Somebody wrote that he didn't like "Wings of Desire" because he didn't feel the same as he felt watching "City of Angels". I agree in the "feeling" part, because I felt nausea watching "City of Angels" and that didn't happen to me watching "Wings of Desire"!! I own "Wings of Desire" and have seen it and enjoyed it many times. Regarding "City of Angels", well I rented it and barely could see it once!
The Original Is Better.......2007-05-13
Back in 1988, on a friend's recommendation, I saw "Wings of Desire" in the theater and loved it. Subsequently, I was interested when Hollywood made its own version of Wim Wender's film with Nicholas Cage and Meg Ryan, both actors whose work I've enjoyed. I saw "City of Angels," and for the most part I liked it -- that is, until the very end. What a DOWNER!! No matter that the movie gets all psedo-warmfuzzy-philosophical and time-to-get-out-your-handkerchiefs, it misses the point of the original film, which was a celebration of Human Life and Love. I own the DVD of "Wings of Desire." One viewing of "City of Angels" was enough for me.
City of Angels.......2007-05-09
this is a great movie, a must have. Beautiful music. Two wonderful actors with very expressive eyes. upgrade to DVD

i like this movie because for me, it was a nice, simple story about love. it made me think and it reminded me not to take life, love and peoples feelings for granted...
Best In Class - Chick Flick.......2007-03-09
I bought this for my wife for Valentine's day and I'm now a hero. This is her favorite "chick flick". Actually, I've been able to sit through a couple of showings of this DVD and still been entertained. BTW, the sound track is excellent.
Be a hero, buy this for your wife or girl friend.

This true story of the black flyers who broke the color barrier in the U.S. Air Force during World War II is a well-intentioned film highlighted by an excellent cast. Proud, solemn, Iowa-born Laurence Fishburne and city-kid hipster Cuba Gooding Jr. are among the hopefuls who meet en route to Tuskegee Air Force Base, where they are among the recruits for an "experimental" program to "prove" the abilities of the black man in the U.S. armed services. Fighting prejudice from racist officers and government officials and held to a consistently higher level of performance than their white counterparts, these men prove themselves in training and in combat, many of them dying for their country in the process. Andre Braugher costars as a West Point graduate who takes charge of the unit in Africa and in Italy (where it's christened the 332nd). The film is rousing, if slow starting and episodic, but it's periodically grounded by a host of war movie clichés, notably the calculated demise of practically every trainee introduced in the opening scenes (ironic given the 332nd's real-life combat record--high casualties for the enemy, low casualties among themselves, and no losses among the bombers they escorted). Ultimately the Emmy-nominated performances by moral backbone Fishburne and the dedicated Braugher and the energy and cocky confidence of Gooding give their battles both on and off the battlefield the sweet taste of victory. --Sean Axmaker
Description
Featuring an all-star cast headed by Laurence Fishburne, fireballs of high speed air action explode off the screen in this exciting story of the "Fighting 99th," the first squadron of black American pilots to be allowed to fight for their country. Based on the true story.

Military film.......2007-05-14
Great flic. Some liberties taken with regard to the Tuskeegee situation, but overall gives a fair representation of the attitudes of the time. Good action scenes, with a very good performance by Fishburne. Highly recommend the film.
Well worth it.......2007-05-07
My father was one of the men who were depicted in this movie. I thought it was well worth watching, it will be a legacy to pass on to my children, thanks to the well acted script.
black saviors.......2007-05-07
this is one of those movies everyone should own. this movie depicts how the african american group of soldiers played a major role in winning parts of a war when african americans were not even considered to be real soldiers in the american armed forces.
WONDERFUL!.......2007-04-18
I'm a huge mark for History movies, so it was quite a shock that I'd never heard of this movie before seeing it on cable TV for the first time. Now I'm bordering on obsessed. It's a good thing I can watch it anytime I want.
The real story of colored men and their contributions to World War 2. Their triumphs, tragedies and all the obstacles they overcame to contribute to America's victory in the Great War. It's clear to anyone who studies history that the valiant contribution of these brave men could have literally spelled the difference between victory and defeat. Their bravery in the face of adversity ON THEIR OWN HOME SOIL hardened them... battle-readied them... in a way that no white flyer could say he was hardened.
Men boarded those planes to fly off to battle... heroes landed the planes, returning from the mission.
Truly one of the best WWII films out there!.......2007-04-16
One of the most underated, action filled, educational and entertaining films from World War II out there!

Karaoke is a way for average people to get on stage and sing cover songs. In Duets, it's also a money sport. No, really. As with other bar sports (pool, darts), the karaoke-for-money game is rife with hustlers. One such hustler is Ricky Dean (Huey Lewis), who takes time off the karaoke circuit to attend the funeral of his ex-wife, where he meets his estranged daughter (Gwyneth Paltrow) and can't shake her desire to go on the road with him. The other hustler is Suzi Loomis (Maria Bello), a woman who literally prostitutes herself to get from gig to gig, until she meets up with a kind-hearted cabby (Scott Speedman). Then there's Todd Woods (Paul Giamatti), who gets so fed up with his sales job and being ignored at home that he hits the road, moving from karaoke bar to karaoke bar in a voyage of self-discovery. Along the way he picks up Reggie Kane (Andre Braugher), an escaped felon with a voice like an angel. All three couples end up in Omaha for the $5,000 karaoke finals. Chock full of bad writing and bad direction, the movie inspires a perverse fascination. Braugher and Giamatti chew up the scenery at every opportunity, but most interesting is the father-daughter incest subtext (compounded by the fact that the movie is directed by Gwyneth's dad, Bruce Paltrow). Eeeeesh. --Andy Spletzer
Description
Academy Award(R)-winner Gwyneth Paltrow (Best Actress, SHAKESPEARE IN LOVE, THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY) and Scott Speedman (TV's FELICITY) are part of the stellar ensemble cast in a hilariously offbeat comedy! The lives of six stranges become outrageously intertwined when a riotous road trip culminates at the site of the national Karaoke championships. As they compete for the $5,000 grand prize, this unlikely group will eventually learn all about each other ... while discovering answers to the questions about themselves! Also featuring great performances from Maria Bello (COYOTE UGLY), Andre Braugher (FREQUENCY), Paul Giamatti (BIG MOMMA'S HOUSE), and Huey Lewis (SHADOW OF DOUBT) -- you'll agree with audiences everywhere who fell in love with this uncommonly entertaining comedy!
Customer Reviews:
Better Than American Idol!.......2007-03-20
Winning at karaoke might not seem like a promising theme for a movie. It might initially strike you as providing as flimsy a foundation for drama as Sylvester Stallone's movie about arm-wrestling. But this movie works. And unless you are a devotee of karaoke, it will probably also surprise you. It will make you aware that there's a whole subculture out there that, like the world of pool players, is filled with hustlers, fans, newbies who become addicts, and a host of other colorful characters.
"Duets" isn't perfect though. It generally adopts an up-beat tone as it follows the stories of a variety of people who all converge for the finale at a high-stakes karaoke contest. The individual stories tend to be as life-affirming as the interweaving stories in movies such as "Grand Canyon." However, some jarring elements seep through. And in fact, the bonus commentary reveals that this movie was adapted from a novel consisting of violent, surreal episodes. Some scenes with that slant were indeed shot, but the director wisely chose to relegate them to the "Deleted Scenes" pile. If they had been included, the whole movie would have been derailed into some nihilistic view of a world ruled by random acts of brutality. As it is, this original conception of the material is only hinted at in the mysterious truncation of certain scenes and in a few leaps in narrative logic.
However, these minor flaws are more than compensated for by what became the overall arc of this movie. Most particularly, the chemistry between the players here is wonderful and universally redeeming. Gwyneth Paltrow and Huey Lewis as daughter and father have a real spark between them. Paul Giamatti as the escapee from suburbia and Andre Braugher as the hitchhiker he picks up similarly develop an unlikely, but very real rapport.
Most of all though, this movie is about the music. Almost all the actors here did their own singing. Paul Giamatti reportedly protested that he couldn't sing at all and wanted to be dubbed. But when the cameras started to roll, he blossomed into a song-stylist par excellence. All sorts of unsuspected talent is revealed, making this movie a better trip than a whole season of American Idol!
Duets is FANTASTIC.......2007-02-02
For me, you don't get much better then stars who are known primarily for their acting ability making an attempt to try their hand in singing/dancing (with the exception of straight guys dressing up as girls). Duets is non-stop entertainment. I can't take my eyes off the screen when it is on. My only critique would be more singing, less dialogue.
Duets.......2007-01-09
I like this movie because it is pure entertainment & moves along quickly. It's one of those "feel good" movies.
Great Music.......2006-11-19
This was one of my favorite movies. Unlike one other reviewer, I'd say this is one to watch more than once ..... like listening to a good album many times. I thought the story was decent, but the music is what really made the movie. Much like the music made Dirty Dancing (another of my all time favs). I also thought Mario Bello did a great rendition of "I Can't Make You Love Me". This is well worth buying.
For the most part... sour talent & plot.......2006-10-23
This is one of those movies you will want to watch only once. There was so much potential for the story line and comedy, but it appears somewhere along the line everyone just got lazy. The only worthy converse is between the father and daughter. Huey Lewis, Gwyneth Paltrow and Arnold McCuller's acting and talent were great, but everyone else really lacked. Especially Maria Bello's, which I was really surprised that she was cast to sing since she has no talent and her voice just made you want to turn off the volume. There is a ton of holes in the story line and talent with this one. Save this for a rainy, bored day or skip it all together....

In this drama, set in New Orleans just as the civil rights movement was about to send shockwaves through society, Andre Braugher plays a priest from Baltimore who has offended his superiors and is sent southward to teach at a Catholic high school for young African American men. Braugher's character, Father Verrett, is to teach history and stay out of trouble, but before long he's making problems by raising the consciousness of his students. Named as the school's basketball coach, Verrett succeeds in instilling pride in his team, especially when, in a scene fraught with tension, he drives the team bus to a "whites only" diner after a game and insists on being served. As the sports leagues in New Orleans are segregated, Verrett's team will never play the team from the all-white high school that is supposed to be the best in the city. But one of his energized players issues a challenge to the white team, and a real championship game ensues. This all may sound simplistically moralistic, but the film does provide a multilayered look at segregation, and especially at the tensions it created within families when the younger generation sought change. And though the plot's outcome may not be surprising, the film's strongest points are the fine performances, in particular Braugher as the idealistic if abrasive priest. --Robert J. McNamara
Description
A true story of a priest (Andre Braugher) in New Orleans who formed a group of black players and challenged an all-white prep school basketball team in the 1960's. Eventually events like these signaled the pivotal turn in the games' history leading to the integration in today's sport. Directed by Steve James (Hoop Dreams), these basketball players didn't just make shots, they made history.
Customer Reviews:
A small gem.......2007-06-23
Based on a true story, the mixture of morality, sports, and quality acting and directing makes for a winning combination, especially for teenage viewers and the young at heart.
Great Movie.......2006-09-18
I love basketball and history, so when these two elements are mixed together, I'm automatically hooked. This movie tells the story of the 1965 St. Augustine High (black school) Purple Knights and their trials and tribulations to play against the Jesuit High (white school) Eagles for the New Orleans high school basketball championship. Prior to that blacks could not play for the city title. They could only sit home and wonder "what if". The acting by Andre Braugher and his supporting cast was superb, but i wasn't feeling those accents that Travis and Boo had. I've live in New Orleans, and black folks don't talk like that. Other than that, it was a good movie.
Well Done!.......2003-10-26
I can't get enough of watching this movie. It was well-written, well-acted, and even though it was easy to figure out the outcome of the final game, that really isn't the point. The point was that the game happened at all. I am actually in the movie (yes, I am an extra-sitting next to one of the parents during the final game), so I saw it first-hand many, many times in real-life during filming. Yet, I still find myself watching it once again to see the story yet one more time. This should be required viewing for high school kids.
In A Class By Itself.......2000-02-15
TNT has often called itself the best movie studio on telivision. PASSING GLORY would suggest that maybe it is. This is a first rate production. The performances are gripping. The basketball sequences are thrilling. I have rented this movie over and over again. It is truly a classic. This is a small gem that no one should miss.

Amazon.com essential video
Directed by Edward Zwick (cocreator of the TV series thirtysomething), this unforgettable drama is as important as Schindler's List in its treatment of a noble yet little-known episode of history.

The 1972 disaster hit The Poseidon Adventure was ripe for a big-budget CGI remake, and who better to helm it than thriller expert Wolfgang Petersen, director of Das Boot and The Perfect Storm? It hardly matters that a TV movie remake (also based on Paul Gallico's original 1969 source novel) was made less than a year before, because Petersen's version is far more spectacular, with shocking digital effects, massive sets, amazing stunt-work and enough fire and water to fill five movies with challenging worst-case scenarios. Once again, the plot concerns the capsizing (by a massive "rogue wave") of a state-of-the-art luxury liner, and the struggle of a small group of survivors (including Josh Lucas, Kurt Russell, Emmy Rossum, and Richard Dreyfuss) to climb upwards, to the ship's hull, in their treacherous quest for a safe exit. Unfortunately, most of these characters are two-dimensional and under-developed (especially when compared to the 1972 film's all-star cast), and the unimaginative screenplay by Mark Protosevich (reportedly worked on by several uncredited writers) subjects them to a rote series of obstacles that grow increasingly routine and repetitious, not to mention contrived and illogical. Again, it hardly matters, because Petersen's handling of non-stop action is so slick and professional that Poseidon gets by on sheer adrenaline. The capsizing scenes are nothing less than awesome, with some effects so real (and so horrifying) that younger and more sensitive viewers may need to look away. And while it lacks the engaging humanity of the 1972 version, Poseidon is certainly never boring. Faint praise, perhaps, but you'll get your popcorn's worth of mindless entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

Good flick.......2007-06-14
The plot was good and the acting was also. Like other HD-DVD movies the picture was great. Well worth the price to have at home.
Exciting..........2007-05-31
and keeps you watching! There really isn't enough of the story line in the mix though. It could only be better if there had been. Rogue wave meets ocean liner and it doesn't turn out very well for most of the passengers!
Great movie!!.......2007-05-20
My teenage daughter and I are both fans of the original, so we approached this one with some trepidation...remakes usually fall short, and disaster flicks are MEANT to be cheesy, so how good could this be?
Well, we were pleasantly surprised! There wasn't a lot of character development, and I had trouble for a while distinguishing one female character from another, but it was a good, fun, adventurous thrill ride, a great Sunday afternoon popcorn movie.
We give it our own two thumbs up.
Great DVD.......2007-05-16
Your DVD was great and in great condition. I will bye more soon. Thank you
Pure Popcorn, But Man What A Ride!.......2007-05-14
Everyone knows the story of the POSEIDON. This is only the third movie to bear the name and be based (loosely) on Paul Gallico's novel, THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE. There was also a sequel to the original diaster film made by Irwin Allen that starred Ernest Borgnine and Shelly Winters and a ton of others that went on to be major stars.
This version offers Kurt Russell, Richard Dreyfuss, Emmy Rossum, Jacinda Barrett, Mike Vogel, Mia Maestro, Jimmy Bennett, and Andre Braugher. Unfortunately, it only features the actors and actresses in roles that you can understand at a glance. There are no real characters here, no sense of history.
What you do get is a knuckle-buster of an adrenaline-soaked movie. After POSEIDON was overturned by the rogue wave about eighteen minutes into the film, I didn't draw a breath till the final frames rolled through. Was the plot predictable? Sure. Could I figure out who was going to live and who was going to die? I was right more times than I was wrong.
POSEIDON was shot on 53 sound stages, some of them several stories tall. The special effects were amazing and the digital work is unsurpassed. The ship felt real even though it wasn't.
In this HD-DVD version, the video portions are beautiful and really show off the cinematography and sets. But the audio is where POSEIDON soars. Captured in Dolby TrueHD, one of the best lossless codec on the market today. A surround sound system totally enhances the viewing experience, and this is one of the movies you can show off your system on.
The viewing can be gut-wrenching and the intensity is definitely pumped up, so young viewers probably aren't a good idea. But for someone who's looking for a high-end action movie that doesn't slow down during a 90-minute presentation, POSEIDON is great entertainment.

The vampiric Stephen King tale returns to the small screen, 25 years after the first made-for-TV Salem's Lot, a Tobe Hooper-directed ratings hit. This time it's Rob Lowe as a successful writer who returns to his haunted hometown. As a kid, something awful happened to him in the spooky mansion on the hill; now that he's back, the mansion is once again buzzing with evil portents. The physical production (shot in Australia) is convincing, and it's fun to see old pros such as Donald Sutherland, Rutger Hauer, and James Cromwell cutting up in juicy roles. The storytelling, however, feels oddly disjointed, as though King's sprawl had been arbitrarily hacked away rather than adapted (a few big moments are bewilderingly left offscreen). The approach misses the basic assets of a vampire story: the disbelief, the lore, the sex appeal. Instead, it feels like a random collection of bits for short attention spans. --Robert Horton

What's the fuzz about? This is the one true version!.......2007-06-22
Most of the critics here compare this mini-series to the first movie adaption of 1979 and not to the book. And I guess most of them knew the 1979 before they read the book (if at all), and they did it as boys or girls, being scared and thrilled and loving it ever since. If it was the other way round - reading the book first and then watching the two movies (without the fond memories of thirty years inbetween) - the contest wouldn't even be close: This is by far the more faithful adaption of the original story.
Most critics keep coming up with totally irrelevant details: So Straker isn't bold anymore. Who cares? So Matt Burke is an African American and gay. What's the problem there? I find it pretty annoying that most of the detractors here are complaining about this. It's the 21st century, for christ's sake! True, King didn't put any minorities in the book, but this was the 70s, and I'm quite sure he would today.
King had a whole book to develop characters and relationships. This movie only has three hours. So to speed up character development they gave them back stories that weren't originally there: Ben was in Afghanistan, Burke is gay, the doctor had a crush on Sandy, etc. etc. It is all in sinc with the feel of the mood of the original story. This is movie making 101, actually.
And then Barlow. What an improvement on the first version! I mean, James Mason was a fine Straker in 1979, and Donald Sutherland is slightly overacting here. But coming from the book's Barlow I was sorely disappointed to find that Tobe Hooper had turned him into a blue skinned caricature of Max Schreck. Here we have Rutger Hauer - who was born to play King's seductive and charming villain. Again, the choice isn't even close.
So, if you don't mind having black and gay characters in your story and if you love the book, especially its non-horror aspects, this is the movie for you. Of course, you can always turn to a wooden 70s monster flick, if you like. But don't pretend it has anything to do with Stephen King.
Good But not Great.......2007-05-12
Good movie, but not nearly as good as the origional. Barlow is a jolk in this film compared to the amazing Barlow from the Tobe Hooper film, plus the Toby Hooper Salem's Lot is so much more scarier and has so many more horror elements contained within it, even the skull in the moon at the end with the burning house is so spooky. This film however did have good parts to it and was explained in more detail but it is not nearly as spooky as it should have been, too much explaining and not enough development. Over all 3/10 worth watching but not nearly as amazing as the origional which is a 10/10 spook fest.
SUCKS.......2007-04-26
Garbage. They tweaked it in every place that didn't need tweaking. Straker is no longer bald, Matt Burke is no longer caucasion, and now he's gay. The bus driver is now a vietnam vet instead of korea. In this adaptation, Ben Mears was the kid who found the bodies of Hubie Marsten and his wife. The story begins in winter instead of late summer. Ralphie Glick doesn't just go missing, he's drowned in an icey pond. Instead of Ben Mears coming to town and finding the Marsten house already sold, Crockett has already promised it to Mears, but now he's renegged and sold it out from under him. I don't see the point. They didn't just change the story, they didn't leave anything intact. It's bad. It's unwatchable, especially if you loved the book. None of the characters have Maine accents... Hmm. Could it have been filmed in... oh I dunno... AUSTRALIA PERHAPS??
Not great, but not totally bad, either!!!!!.......2007-03-23
I remember trying to watch the newer television version of Salem's Lot when it was first on TNT a few years ago, but it just didn't grab me at the time. I hate watching a mini-series on television that has a ton of commercials. Also, the little bit that I saw of the show didn't appear to be any more chilling or scary than the original version had been. For some strange reason, television and Stephen King simply don't mix very well. Almost everything by King that's been done for television has turned out to be rather mediocre at best. Some of it has been downright awful. That's not to say that I don't own the DVDs of The Stand and The Shining and Nightmares & Dreamscapes. I do. It's just that I seldom watch them, except for maybe "Battleground" in the Nightmares & Dreamscapes series. That was an EXCELLENT adaptation of a Stephen King story. The best that's ever been done for television. I wish the rest of King's stuff that's been done for television was just as good as "Battleground," but it isn't. Which brings me back to Salem's Lot. I found a good price on the DVD and decided to give the movie another chance, but without the commercials. I'm glad I did. Though the mini-series still had its share of problems, I certainly enjoyed it more this time around. Rob Lowe takes over the role of Ben Mears from David Soul, playing a writer who returns to his small hometown to write a book about evil and ends up having to fight it tooth and nail. Rutger Hauer plays the vampire, Barlow, and Donald Sutherland plays his assistant, Straker. Both of them take over the evil Marsten House that overlooks the town of Jerusalem's Lot, and it isn't long before people start disappearing. Andre Braugher and Samantha Mathis play Ben's friends and accomplices in fighting the vampires. James Cromwell plays Father Callahan, the priest who lacks the faith to destroy the evil that's taking over his town. It's been so long since I read the novel that I unable to tell just how well the newer television version actually holds up. I will say that it's difficult to find someone to root for. None of the characters appear to be very likable. Still, the special effects are well done, and both Sutherland and Hauer steal the show with their over the top performances. It's easy to see that both men were enjoying themselves and hamming it up to a certain degree. Rob Lowe does a good job with his character, but David Soul was infinitely a more likable actor in the original series. I liked it that one of the search dogs in the movie was named Cujo, though he wasn't a St. Bernard. The movie runs three hours in length, and the last third is by far the best part, though there is one scene in the middle where a vampire in a jail cell squeezes into a tiny air vent in an attempt to get to Lowe, who's in a cell that's further down the corridor. That was a cool effect! While not a 5-star film, Salem's Lot is definitely not a 1-star movie, either. I am happy that I now have it for my "Stephen King" film library. Last, the DVD doesn't have any extras on it. It would've been nice if there had been an interview with Stephen King and maybe some of the cast and crew, explaining why Salem's Lot was being remade and what they hoped to accomplish with the newer version. No such luck. It's like everyone took the money and ran!!!
Misterious and scary.......2007-01-04
IT is a misterious and scary movie that can scare anyone.
One of Stephen King's best!
The only bad thing about this movie is that it last's too long
but it is one of my favorite and scariest movies.
