    Amazon.com essential video

Screenwriter William Goldman's novel <I>The Princess Bride</I> earned its own loyal audience on the strength of its narrative voice and its gently satirical, hyperbolic spin on swashbuckled adventure that seemed almost purely literary. For all its derring-do and vivid over-the-top characters, the book's joy was dictated as much by the deadpan tone of its narrator and a winking acknowledgement of the clichés being sent up. Miraculously, director Rob Reiner and Goldman himself managed to visualize this romantic fable while keeping that external voice largely intact: using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his skeptical grandson (Fred Savage) into the absurd, irresistible melodrama of the title story.

And what a story: a lowly stable boy, Westley (Cary Elwes), pledges his love to the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright), only to be abducted and reportedly killed by pirates while Buttercup is betrothed to the evil Prince Humperdinck. Even as Buttercup herself is kidnapped by a giant, a scheming criminal mastermind, and a master Spanish swordsman, a mysterious masked pirate (could it be Westley?) follows in pursuit. As they sail toward the Cliffs of Insanity...

The wild and woolly arcs of the story, the sudden twists of fate, and, above all, the cartoon-scaled characters all work because of Goldman's very funny script, Reiner's confident direction, and a terrific cast. Elwes and Wright, both sporting their best English accents, juggle romantic fervor and physical slapstick effortlessly, while supporting roles boast Mandy Patinkin (the swordsman Inigo Montoya), Wallace Shawn (the incredulous schemer Vizzini), and Christopher Guest (evil Count Rugen) with brief but funny cameos from Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and Peter Cook. <I>--Sam Sutherland</I>

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Parody On Fairy Tales. Cute, Funny & Romantic With All The Classic Fairy-Tale Elements We Love. "As You Wish." .......2007-06-23

In only his 3rd time behind the camera, director Rob Reiner brings Academy Award winning screenwriter William Goldman's "The Princess Bride" to the silver screen, with Goldman himself writing the script. With excellent performances by Cary Elwes, Mandy Pantinkin, Wallace Shawn, Andre The Giant (In pace requiscat), Chris Sarandon and Christopher Guest, special appearances by Peter Falk, Carol Kane, Billy Crystal, Fred Savage Peter Cook and Mel Smith and starring Robin Wright as The Princess Bride, this classic fairy tale never disappoints for all of its 98 minutes (it never feels that long; then again, I was so busy enjoying the movie that I didn't notice the length of the film). I haven't viewed the special features yet, but they promise to be as good as the movie itself.
I recommend this movie to every female out there. You will love it and have your significant others saying "As you wish" to your every word.

The film could pass for a Disney movie, as MGM rarely produces anything this clean in this day and age (virtually no swearing, sex or nudity). A movie the entire family (and especially young couples) can enjoy together.

If I were to remake this film (theoretically speaking, of course), I would take out the bits where the Grandson interrupts the Grandfather every time Buttercup and Westley kiss. Those bits are some of the best.

The film is crammed with memorable lines, from Westley's signature saying
"As you wish" to Inigo's "My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father. Prepare to die." Watch the movie and, I promise you, you will love it.

    Rated PG for comic violence.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best films I've seen........2007-05-24

Simply put, this is one of the most clever, witty, and entertaining films I've ever seen. It's one that will always have a place of honor in my collection; it's more like a stage show than a full scale cinematic production, but that fact adds to it's charm I think.

This is one of those films that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, young and old alike. I grew up on this film, and now as an adult, I enjoy some of the more subtle comedy on an entirely different level than when I was younger, and it never loses it's appeal.

5 out of 5 stars A special edition with more than a new cover!.......2007-05-23

Princess Bride is a classic, a favorite movie of many. And this special edition is what a good Princess Bride fan is probably looking for. The home footage taken by cast members during the filming, the little tour guide book by "Fezzik", and the additional commentaries add even more magic to the movie. Did you know Andre kept Robin Penn warm by covering her whole head with his hand? It's great.

4 out of 5 stars Tremendous Fun for the Family...........2007-05-21

This film is so creative and entertaining. You will get caught up in the romance, adventure, and humor that has made this film famous. You will be quoting this film for years. It is definitely a must-see film. There is no hidden depth to it, but if you are out for entertainment, fun, and laughter this is a film you can count on. "As you wish!"

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story!.......2007-05-12

This movie is a lot of fun. The story is entertaining, the acting is very good, and the premise - the visualization of a book being read by a grandfather to his sick grandson - is terrific. We watch an imaginary topic come to life. Mandy Patinkin is great!

Blake Edwards, who managed to capture middle-aged angst so well in 10, managed to offend a variety of constituencies with this sporadically funny take on that reliable laugh-getter, bigamy. Well, not bigamy, technically: Dudley Moore is only married to one woman, Micki (Ann Reinking), but she's too busy to have the baby he longs for. He winds up in an affair with Maude (Amy Irving), who gets pregnant, thus satisfying his paternal urge. Except that then Micki announces that she, too, is pregnant, doubling his pleasure--and his problems. Twin pregnancies lead to a variety of complications, particularly because Maude's father is a professional wrestler. And when both women wind up delivering in the same hospital on the same day, well, director Blake Edwards does what he can to make this sordid situation seem comic--which it is as long as you don't think about it too much. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

5 out of 5 stars Rooting for the Villain.......2007-03-19

Dudley Moore is the villain in this one but it is hard not to root for him. He plays the supportive husband of Ann Reinking.

All he wants to do is be a father but his wife is busy working on a political campaign. She promises they will settle down when it is over. When it ends, she is instead rewarded with a judgeship in another city which she has to take. That leaves Dudley back home and lonely, mourning for the kids he is sure he will never have.

That's when he meets Amy Irving. She is a cellist he interviews and they share some type of spark with each other right away. He is not the type to be an adulterer but the situation gets the best of him because he feels abandoned by his own wife. He and Amy fall in love and he decides to get a divorce from Ann so he can settle down with Amy and have kids.

If it were that simple, though, there would not really be a movie here. Just as he gets ready to tell Ann the news, she tells him that she is pregnant from their last conjugal visit. Amy turns up pregnant at the same time. Since he really loves them both, he cannot bring himself to divorce Ann nor can he stop himself from marrying Amy. Neither knows about the other and it is slapstick as he tries to manage his life to keep both of his secrets. Needless to say, the world conspires against him.

When both women head into labor at the same time, the secret comes out with disastrous consequences for the guy who only ever wanted to be a dad.

    This one is comedy throughout.

5 out of 5 stars A bittersweet story of bigamy.......2005-03-12

This film released in late 1984,is about a married man named Rob Salinger(the late Dudley Moore) who secretly marries another woman during his current marriage. Rob is a newspaper editor married to Micheline "Micki" Salinger(Ann Reinking),a judge. While secretly romancing Maude(Amy Irving),he proposes to her(Maude). Rob has babies by both women and in one of the last scenes, they(the women) both meet and converse about their respective simultaneous marriages. But Rob keeps both wives. In the real world, bigamy is undoubtedly illegal. Director Blake Edwards' previous film credits include BREAKFAST AT TIFFANY'S and THE PINK PANTHER. Subsequently,he directed the late John Ritter in 1989's SKIN DEEP.

    4 out of 5 stars "You're my woman...and I'm your man " .......2004-12-11

Sorry, if you missed the humor in my review title. It's actually a quote from the film itself. And I don't memorize line from movies, unless they've really made some kind of impression , on me. "Micki and Maude" was impressionable , because it's hilarious. Not hilarious, like "The Jerk", or "Dumb and Dumber". It's not that kind of film. Rather it's hilarious, in the sense of it's dry wit and added humor ,into everyday life situations. Not overplayed or over the top. Hollywood doesn't make too many films like this anymore and that makes "Micki and Maude" , even more enjoyable. This is one of those ,little ,jewels, of a film , that has escaped the popularity and credit , that it's worth. I originally , saw "Micki and Maude" , back in the 80's , on HBO. I was a huge Dudley Moore fan , and so that was the initial appeal , and he's very funny as the story's leading character ( Rob ). I'm also a huge Blake Edwards fan , and this story is exemplirary of his directing and hilarious writing skills. Richard Mulligan also adds to this hilarious farce about a married man ( Dudley Moore ) , who falls for an ambitious , talented and very beautiful younger woman ( played by Amy Irving ). Things get complicated , as Rob ( Dudley Moore) tries to cover it up , from his wife and tries to keep his wife a secret from his mistress. If that sounds tricky , add the fact that he's madly in love with both and gets them both pregnant , at the same time. By today's Hollywood standards , this film would never get the greenlight. Simply because the formula of the script is entirely too murky. However , this film proves that with a wonderful script , director, and cast , that it is possible to make a highly entertaining film with this type of material. Moreover, " Micki and Maude " is a quaint little film , that harbors alot of it's storyline with chauvenistic themes. But who else can make this theme, more humor filled than Dudley Moore ? I've seen this film, countless times and I enjoy it even more, as I get older. A very funny film , to see on a lazy Sunday afternoon.

    3 out of 5 stars pretty good.......2004-11-29

this film had some good moments&then other moments where it kinda dragged in spots for me. I prefer other Blake Edwards Films&also Dudlet Moore.same with Amy Irving but they have Chemistry in here.i hadn't seen this film in years.it has some moments.

5 out of 5 stars funny and touching.......2004-05-06

What a movie! Dudley moore is married to ann reinking for years and then falls for amy irving. when irving tells him she's pregnant he wants to divorce ann reinking. but when he plans to tell ann guess what she tells him? what's a guy to do? you actually feel for this guy because you know he loves both women even though he is a jerk for marrying both. i have loved this movie for years and watching in later in my 20's it gets better and more touching. of course this movie ends a little too nicely, but how else could they end it?? dudley moore amy irving and ann reinking are all great.

The dark, brooding tone of Conan the Barbarian is replaced in this rousing sequel by a lighter, more humorous tone and one of the campiest casts ever assembled. This time, Conan is assigned by a duplicitous queen (Sarah Douglas) to escort a virgin princess (Olivia d'Abo) on a treacherous trek to a crystal palace where they will retrieve a priceless gemstone. Basketball champ and self-described Lothario Wilt Chamberlain plays Bombaata, a warrior sent on a secret mission to kill Conan, and the androgynous Grace Jones plays Zula, a wild woman who becomes Conan's loyal ally. Some consider this sequel a disappointment, but the film makes no apologies for its silliness, and that's the key to its success as gloriously pulpy entertainment. --Jeff Shannon

    2 out of 5 stars typical 80's fantasy .......2007-01-24

I have seen this movie several times. While it does have a few good moments, it is not enough to save this film. So why do i own this? After the masterpiece that was the first film, why would i have bought this and subject myself to watching it again. The answer is simple. It's because of the score. And even that doesn't save this film. This film is a mere watered down take on the first that takes a great character and turns him into a mere shadow of his former self. All the moments in this movie intended to be funny really aren't. All the serious moments can only make me chuckle. I mean, who wants to see a basketball star (wilt chamberlin) trying to play some warrior. Or some singer (grace jones) trying to act when she should clearly be singing. How a song of hers wasnt on the score seems amazing. So be thankful that some corporate bigwig in some studio decided to not use rock music in this score. Be thankful that Basil Poledouris got the chance to make this score. Without it, this film would be even more of a monstrosity than it already is. But hey, i still have this film in my collection. But this movie is not for everyone. so if you want real gut wrenching blood and gore stick with the first film. Your eyes will thank you and so will your ears.

1 out of 5 stars This movie reeked.......2006-11-19

How is it possible that 7 years after Star Wars and 3 years after Excalibur, Hollywood could still produce a movie of such pathetic special effects, nightmarish casting, and ugly, amateurish cinematography? What a mess.

4 out of 5 stars An action adventure movie whose faults (of which there are many) are now charming in their cheesiness.......2006-06-07

Filming movies back-to-back is nothing new, the obvious savings and advantages on sharing production costs, crew and even marketing meant that the second and third BACK TO THE FUTURE films were filmed simultaneously in the late 1980s. Even today the two sequels to PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN are being filmed hand-in-hand and there are reports that the second Daniel Craig 007 movie will enter into production shortly after the crew have wrapped CASINO ROYALE.
So, it should be no surprise then that the second Conan movie was part of a similar back-to-back deal in the early- to mid-1980s. But what is surprising is that the movie that partnered with the rollicking adventure movie was a quirky science fiction blockbuster from David Lynch named DUNE.
That's right, as that big-budget turkey was roasting under the Mexican sun, a pre-Terminator Arnold Schwarzenegger was working on a much more entertaining movie with a colorful cast of characters.
Based (rather loosely) on the series of novels by Robert E. Howard, this 1984 feature was a sequel to the much darker and more sinister 1982 movie CONAN THE BARBARIAN and saw Schwarzenegger reprise his role as the monumentally strong thief and adventurer.
The director of this entry, the veteran Richard Fleischer actually owed his hire for this movie to another movie he had made almost 30 years earlier, 1958's THE VIKINGS. Producer Raffaella De Laurentiis had commented that since they had tried to copy that movies style and look for the 1982 picture, why not hire that movie's director for this production - and so Fleischer was hired.
Once hired Fleischer set about shaping the movie to his liking. One of the most publicized, decisions he made was telling an incredulous Schwarzenegger that he needed to buff up a bit more. Fleischer said that at the time of the release of CONAN THE BARBARIAN he had been disappointed that Arnold's incredible physique had been covered up for most of the movie, Fleischer also consciously set about making this a lighter entry to the series. The Conan here has a number of genuinely comedic moments, from punching a camel, a horse and attempting to teach a beautiful princess how to wield his sword, Schwarzenegger shows early promise in a genre that would not fully be realized until movies such as TWINS and KINDERGARTEN COP.
Joining Schwarzenegger this time is Sarah Douglas (of SUPERMAN II fame) as the evil Queen Taramis who enlists Conan's help in retrieving a crystal and in turn a magical jeweled horn. Former basketball star Wilt Chamberlain is on board also as the towering Bombaata, who is charged with keeping the princess Jehnna, who is destined to bring back the mystical object (played by the impossibly beautiful Olivia D'Abo) a virgin so that she can be sacrificed. Along the way Conan's ragtag group meet up with Zula, played by Grace Jones. The scene that introduced Jones' character sees her wielding a stick against a group of tormentors and reportedly she landed a few strikes sending a couple of stuntmen in the hospital. It was in fact her role here that brought her to the attention of the James Bond producers that in turn led to her starring in Roger Moore's swan song as 007 in 1985's A VIEW TO A KILL. Far from a great acting display her character still provides a number of memorable moments and is one of the movie's highlights.
The special effects are very dated by today's standards and Pat Roach (veteran of NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN and the Indiana Jones movies) makeup as the wizard Toth-Amon guarding the crystal really is appallingly fake-looking. But the movie is a good popcorn flick that is both fun and fast-paced enough that you can easily forgive these lapses.
Interestingly in the audio commentary that accompanied CONAN THE BARBARIAN Schwarzenegger commented that he would be interested in making a third Conan movie. Sadly this has not been forthcoming and now that he looks intent on pursuing political goals it appears less and less likely. A shame.
This movie is nowhere near as good as its predecessor, but it's still recommended for those rainy Saturday afternoons.

    5 out of 5 stars A must have movie!!!.......2006-05-06

this was an fun fantasy-action movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger as a powerful kick ass/warrior. Arnold is so damm sexy with all the muscle showing sword-fighting ....And yes, the movie is visually interesting, too, even though, the special effects are obsolete and a little goofy...but thats ok...its an old movie now... A movie I love seeing over and over again...a movie that is a must have for any Arnold -Fan!

1 out of 5 stars Awful movie. I wish I could forget it.......2005-11-29

In the first movie, magic was just that. Magic. It was dangerous, expensive in terms of life, and used only in dire circumstances. In this movie magic is reduced to the level of a poor "Dungeons and Dragons" game. I halfway expected The wizard (Mako) to pull out some oddly shaped dice and roll them in his battle with the Man Ape/Toth-Amon.

In the original movie, Conan ponders The riddle of steel, he's a man of action, but still a thinker. He speaks little. In this movie, talks too much.

Conan rescues a blonde girl and is betrayed by the evil stepmother. It was a variation of Snow White, Cimmerian style. At least there weren't seven dwarves.

Finally, Conan movies should be R rated. The world of Conan is violent, brutal, lusty and grim. Solutions to problems are found with the edge of a blade, not with talk. This watered-down milquetoast version of a Conan adventure was designed to pander to a family-friendly audience. There's plenty of family entertainment out there, and to adapt Conan to that environment is unnecessary and wrong.

It's too bad that John Milius was not in charge of this movie. The suits in Hollywood had their way and this movie stinks as a result. The fans lost, because instead of three movies we only got one good one, one bad one, and if a third is ever made, it won't star Arnold in the title role. What a missed opportunity. It could have been SO much better.

If you like the Conan stories, ignore this film, and stick to the one and only Conan movie.

5 out of 5 stars Best Wrestling DVD ever?.......2007-06-12

Now I don' really know what I was expecting when I purchased this DVD, but I know that I ended up with the best wrestling DVD I have ever bought. Wrestling with Shadows was #1 but it is now a distant #2.

I have purchased many tapes and DVDs over the years, mostly "classics" and have never been in a big hurry to put money into the WWE's hands. A year or two ago I relented and bought "The Ultimate Ric Flair Collection". That had been the only other DVD I have based on a single wrestler (beside WWS mentioned above) and as a result my only point of comparison. There is NO comparing this DVD with the Ric Flair DVD. Flair's DVD is just matches and TV interviews. I do like the Flair DVD but my respect for Flair has decreased more and more as I hear more about him.

Disc #1 contains a fantastic 2-hour synopsis of Bret's career. It covers his days in Stampede to his introduction into the WWF and eventually WCW and his career ending concussion. We learn more about the mule kick from Goldberg, Shawn Michaels telling Bret to get out of his ring, the ineptitude of WCW, and of course Owen.

Being that this is a WWE video, Montreal is covered but only lightly, and does not tell the true story of why Bret left WWE. Watch WWS to see it unfolding in real time.

There are lots of interviews with Bret, Vince, Shane, Mick Foley, Chris Benoit, Edge, Christian, Roddy Pipper (wow, I had no idea Bret was the first to pin him cleanly) and many many others. The interviews with Bret are post-stroke and at times are very emotional. There appears to be the beginning of reconciliation based on Bret and Vince's comments. It's interesting too because Bret comments that his favorite matches are mostly one's in which he lost. And after viewing all of the matches in the set, I have to agree.

Disc #2 and Disc #3 contains lots of really good matches including his fantastic tribute match with Chris Benoit. But I have to admit, I will be watching Disc #1 over and over.

    5 out of 5 stars A Household Favorite................2007-05-31

I never would of thought that WWE would ever even consider putting out A Bret Hart dvd. Because Of the bad blood between Vince And Bret which all started at Survivor series 1997. (It Was Vince's fault may I add!) Anyway I'm glad Bret chose to set their differences aside in order to make this dvd. The documentary was a real treat. Learning about Stu Hart's Dungeon,Owen Harts death, And his sad last run working with WCW. In a few occasions in the dvd It looked like Bret Hart was going to cry, but held back in some degree. I really feel sorry for Bret for losing Owen, It must of been awful. I enjoyed watching all the great bonus matches as well. What was even better was that Bret hand picked all these matches himself. I will always be a fan of Bret. It's no joke when he says he's the best there is, the best there was, & the best there ever will be!

    4 out of 5 stars Simply Superb.......2007-05-06

Hitman Hart has always been my favourite wrestler. There's this ceasing intensity on his face. He is or rather was a very good friend of Vincent McMahon, atleast that's what this dvd shows. In this documentary movie, the direction simply blows you away. Hitman Hart's career is shown in videos ranging from his high school years up until the time he appeared for the first time in WWF and later, when he joined WCW and all those matches with Shawn Michaels we all loved to watch as children. To see him grown from above average amateur to a world leader at entertainment wrestling is very inspiring. His music, his dark side, his Shawn Michael, his Steve Austin hatred, his ladder matches, his tag team matches, his brother's career and his departure from wrestling is all showcased in a way one won't forget. If you have been a fan of his, I suggest you shouldn't think twice before giving this DVD a try. It is quite "grown up" and doesn't really show you 'please don't try this at home' adverts. So long. I wonder if there is a similar doc made for Shawn Michaels and sundry. If not, producers - what are you waiting for?

    I love Bret Hart.He was always one of my favorite wrestlers.I thought he had a lot of natural skill that a lot of wrestlers didnt posess just coming from an family of 12 in Calgary Alberta Canada and his dad being the legendary Stu Hart you knew he would be great!Now their are a lot of biased opinions toward Bret people may feel differently than me and Im open to everyones views and opinions and Im not one to bash other people because of how they feel.Thats their view so thats their view.The only thing I seen wrong with the dvd was some of the matches.I felt Bret could of put in more classics or more of his famous matches dont get me wrong they were good matches I guess that he liked but not the fans or at least me.Here are some I wouldnt of minded watching again;

The Hart Foundation vs Demolition @ SummerSlam 1988 for the Tag Team Titles

And probably for closure Bret vs Michaels from Survivor Series 1997 known as "The Montreal Screwjob" for the WWE Title but theirs no way Bret would have wanted that on his dvd so you cant really blame him but from an fans standpoint it would have been nice to see that match again for historical reasons oh well.*****Funny when Bret spit on Vince.

4 out of 5 stars From "The Ultimate Challenge" To "10 Years In The Making".......2006-09-05

Now I'll be honest, I didn't buy the DVD set (I have the WM 1-13 VHS set from almost 10 years ago) so I don't know what's been edited or changed as far as theme music or anything of that nature.

WrestleMania 6 - The Ultimate Challege was the first international WrestleMania and was a very unique WrestleMania as there was a main event that was never seen or done before on many levels & also another attempt of a new era in the WWF without Hogan as it's champion. Standout matches include Tag Team Champions Andre & Haku vs. Demolition (only because it was Andre's last in-ring appearence), Brutus Beekcake vs. Mr. Perfect, Roddy Piper vs. Bad News Brown (for those who like brawls), Dusty Rhodes & Sapphire vs. Randy Savage & Sherri, Jake Roberts vs. Ted Dibiase, and the Title vs. Title match between WWF Champion Hulk Hogan & I.C. Champion Ultimate Warrior in a rare "good guy vs. good guy" match were the crowd was split between the two & was Hogan's first clean pinfall loss since his return to WWF in '83.

WrestleMania 7 - This was most memorable as WWF's attempt to capitalize on the Gulf War in Iraq through the main event storyline & the theme "Stars & Stripes Forever". The standout matches here were Tag Team Champions Hart Foundation (in their last PPV match) vs. Nasty Boys, Undertaker vs. Jimmy Snuka (only because this began Taker's undefeated streak), Ultimate Warrior vs. Randy Savage in a retirement match and the aftermath that had everyone in the arena crying, Intercontinental Champion Mr. Perfect vs. Big Boss Man (with the last PPV appearence of Andre The Giant), Virgil vs. Ted Dibiase, and WWF Champion Sgt. Slaughter vs. Hulk Hogan.

WrestleMania 8 - WWF's first ever attempt at the "double main event" & this event had a lot of short average matches, some comedic standouts, and the exit of Hulk Hogan, the elevation of Sid as a monster heel, & the return of the Ultimate Warrior (all of which didn't last long). Standout matches here were Tito Santana vs. Shawn Michaels (the beginning of his singles career), Intercontinental Champion Roddy Piper vs. Bret Hart, and WWF Champion Ric Flair vs. Randy Savage.

WrestleMania 9 - WWF went to Las Vegas for this one & back in time to the roman days at Ceasar's Palace with many memorable moments such as Hogan's last WM appearence for almost a decade, the debut of Jim Ross (in a toga), and the entrances of Savage & Heenan. Standout matches were Intercontinental Champion Shawn Michaels vs. Tatanka, Steiner Bros vs. Headshrinkers, Tag Team Champions Money Inc. vs. Hogan & Beefcake, and Mr. Perfect vs. Lex Luger.

WrestleMania 10 - WWF went back to Madison Square Garden with this 10 year anniversary (eventhough WM11 technically would have been the 10 year anniversary) show featuring highlights from the previous WM's throughout the night. The standout matches here were Bret vs. Owen, Randy Savage vs. Crush in a Falls Count Anywhere match (Savage's last WM appearence), the Intercontinental Ladder match between HBK & Razor Ramon, and WWF Champion Yokozuna vs. Bret Hart with Roddy Piper as the referee.

This set of WrestleMania's were a step below the first five but better than the next 5. I would say this is section is for old school fans of the early '90's.

5 out of 5 stars WWE Wrestlemania Anthology ... Worth the Money!.......2006-03-20

I waited a long time for the WWE to release WrestleMania I-XIV on DVD. I must say that overall I was not disappointed. Each WrestleMania is shown in its entirety (with the exception of WrestleMania XI). The WrestleMania DVDs show the original television broadcasts. I owned just about every WrestleMania in their original VHS format. The older tapes of the shows they released were heavily edited in order to fit the program on one cassette. They even edited some matches to make them shorter. The only way you could see all these matches in their entirety was to watch the original television broadcasts ... until now!

Now, here is what is what is wrong with the DVD sets:

-Entrance music for a lot of Superstars is dubbed over with crappy, generic music so the WWE would not have to pay royalties to use these songs.
-Any verbal reference to WWF is edited out
-WrestleMania XIV-X8 blurs out the WWF scratched logo
-The Salt N' Pepper performance at WrestleMania XI was completely taken out so the WWE would not have to pay them royalties
-There are no extra features whatsoever ... just the event itself for every WrestleMania

I hated that all this great entrance music was taken out. The edited out the entrance music to Slick's "Jive Soul Bro," HillBilly Jim's "Country Boy," Ricky "The Dragon" Steamboat, Demolition, Big Boss Man's "Hard Time," and Ric Flair's original entrance music to name just a few. I really miss "Jive Soul Bro!" I would have shelled out more dough for these DVDs if they ensured all the old theme music was included. The blurred out WWF scratched logo is annoying but bearable.

Personally, I only purchased the first three box sets of WrestleMania I-XV because I already owned WresteMania XV-21 on DVD. If you would prefer to own copies without all the WWF references edited out, I recommend you do the same and try to buy the original WresteleMania DVD releases off of Amazon or eBay for XV-21. Plus, you miss out on a ton of DVD extras that the original DVD releases are packed with.

Regardless of the gigs I give this box set, I highly recommend to add these DVDs to your collection if you are a professional wrestling fan. Every single match and interview is shown in its entirety. Plus, it is the only way you will get these classic WrestleMania's in DVD format.

5 out of 5 stars WM Anthology Vol 2 - "10 Years In The Making".......2005-11-07

At last, here it is. Every WrestleMania to date. Volume 2 features WrestleMania's 6-10. They are on 5 separate discs, the first 2 of which are double sided, & all appear to be in their entirety. On the plus side, there is very little visual editing, except a few signs here & there that actually say "WWF". Logos however are not blurred. Another plus - Jesse Ventura's commentary is in tact. However, no WW'E' disc these days would be complete without some kinda editing though, & most here is in the audio area, in particular entrance music. Demolition, Akeem, Big Bossman, & Jimmy Snuka (I think that's it) all have their music replaced with generic guitar riffs, & Howard Finkle's announcing is redone for those particular guys, making it sound more like a video game announcer.

There are some incredible moments in this WrestleMania set that still sent shivers down my spine, & I'd like to share some of those moments:
WrestleMania VI - I was a huge fan of Demolition & the Ultimate Warrior. Demolition winning the Tag Title for the 3rd time & the epic Title for Title match still give me goosebumps.
WrestleMania VII - Another Warrior moment (& more shivers) in the Retirement Match vs Randy Savage.
WrestleMania VIII - Bret Hart vs Roddy Piper almost made me cry, along with Randy Savage recapturing the Heavyweight Title, & the brief return if the Warrior to help the 'retiring' Hulk Hogan from a 2 sided attack.
WrestleMania IX - Honestly, not too much sticks out here. I was actually hoping Yokozuna would hold the title for a little longer than the few seconds that he did.
WrestleMania X - Bret Hart pulls double duty, putting on an amazing match against his brother to open the event, & a Heavyweight Title win to close the event, plus the amazing Ladder Match for the Intercontinental Title.

In all, I can't complain. Entrance music editing aside, these were very nicely done. Quite highly recommended.

3 out of 5 stars One good WrestleMania.......2005-11-04

The WrestleMaina featuring Hogan vs Slaughter as the main even is probably the greatest WrestleMaina out there. Alot of good matches but the rest of the set is lackluster. It was a dark period for WWE in 92 and 93 and the WrestleMaina's will show that.

5 out of 5 stars Ooooh Yeeeahhh! Shout Out to the B Team!.......2007-05-08

Although historians of Ancient Rome may disagree, this disc set has the best Wrestlemania Events off all time. 1985-89 is The Golden Era, headed by Hulk Hogan, and my fave - Randy "Macho Man" Savage (The Stones to Hogan's cute Beatles). Ooooh yeeaahh! Throw in Ravishing Rick Rude, Classy Freddy Blassy, Cyndi Lauper (manager), Mr. T, Brutus "The Barber" Beefcake, Jake "The Snake" Roberts, Rowdy Roddy Piper, and the Rest, and you have the most talent ever assembled since Thomas Jefferson dined alone! (That's an old Wrestlemania joke the Hulkster used to tell). And how about The Iron Sheik and Nikolai Volkav, singing the Soviet national anthem before their match, while waving the hammer & sickle?! (The State Department pencil neck geek who gave Volkav a visa should have been fired or executed!) But leave it to rugged individual Hacksaw Jim Dugan to chase those commie bastards out of the ring with a 2x4 -- "Heeeey-OOOOOOOO!!!"

The best wrestlers of the Renaissance Era are here in all their glory! (The time period between the fall of Rome and the late 1970's is considered wrestling's Dark Ages. And the mid-eighties is the Renaissance in full bloom!)

Wrestlemania was for the best of All Time - wrestlers with The Right Stuff. It's like the NCAA basketball tournament, where only the best 64 qualify. There are other "second-tier" wrestlers who came close to making the grade and sharing the Wrestlemania spotlight. The had spirit, strength, and the intangible -- sass! And in any other era, they would have been A-team stars. I'd like to give a shout out to these so-called "B-Team" wrestlers of the Golden Age, in the hope that they won't be forgotten. They have certainly provided me with hours of entertainment and inspiration:

    * The Masked Chiropractor! Knocks guys out, then realigns their spine!
    * Neville "The Fancy Boy" Puddington! Wears a three piece suit with shorts, and hits opponents with his satchel of antique British poetry books.
    * Rich "The Casting Agent" Tanner! Hurts opponents' feelings by answering his cell phone during the match; then destroys their self-esteem by telling them to lose ten pounds!
    * "The Passive Aggressive" Paul Shrug! Tells opponents "whatever," and walks away -- which makes them feel really guilty!
    * The Big Fat Guy! Not very athletic, but big!
    * Star Spangled Sammy! The kids' hero! A red, white, and blue super-patriot for this, the greatest country on God's green earth!
    * "The Flower Child" Burke Lee Protest. Climbs into the ring with tie-dye trunks, and asks the booing crowd to join him in singing "Give Peace a Chance"!
    * Bob Smith. A regular guy who gets beat a lot. (Like those guys who play the Harlem Globetrotters).
    * "The Punk Rocker" Regi Mentle! Leaves opponents dumfounded by destroying himself more than they do! Each match lasts about two minutes, but has amazing energy.
    * Buddy "The Fraternity Guy"! After he knocks out opponents, Buddy puts shaving cream in their hands and krazy-glues a beer can to their forehead!
    * Rico Suave. That's right, *the* Rico Suave! A crowd favorite, he lands a killer move and leads the chant, "Rrrrrrrii-co! Suuaav-eh!"
    * Dangerous Danny Deadpan. He's always deadpan!
    * Tag Team: Sergeant Sprightly and Ragin' Captain Sassy! Head toward the ring in camouflage, hoisting the Stars and Stripes -- while rave dancing to Donna Summer remixes?!
    * Tag Team: Middle Age Man and Grandpa Ed Hatcher. Middle Age Man confuses opponents by describing escrow, then hits them on the head with investment portfolios! Then Grandpa Ed keeps repeating the same stories until opponents cry "uncle"!

1 out of 5 stars Some good stuff, but a bit misleading.......2007-02-21

I bought these DvD's because of one thing. My favorite wrestler of all time. THE ULTIMATE WARRIOR! I got the first two....Anthology 1 and 2, so that it would cover the appropriate years for the UW. Well......I open the box, and view the matches listed on the inside covers...His matches are all listed...Wrestlemania IV vs. Hercules? Well...some of his matches are not contained on these DVD's even though it says right in the INSERT that they are. I believe this is a case of false advertisement. There are also alot of other things missing as well, but the Ultimate Warrior was the most important one to me. There are some other matches that are ok, like alot of the Hogan and Randy Savage matches vs. the likes of Andre the Giant and Ted Dibiase, but overall I think you better be careful ordering....you may not get all that you think you are getting...

    5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Fantastic.......2007-01-29

This set is amazing. There is a bit of editing yes. The missing music can be a bit distracting but it does not deter from the quality of this set. It was a real bit of discovery to see the footage that was added back in. There were a lot more interviews shown in Wrestlemania I and III. Plus, Wrestlemania 2 had full matches, which wasn't seen on the Coliseum Video VHS editions and it was quite eye opening. But could someone tell me why the Craig DeGeorge footage from Wrestlemania IV is completely missing? But this is history, It's definitely the best thing around.

3 out of 5 stars It is OK.......2006-11-04

These DVD were Ok. They are what one should expect. It was nice seeing the matches which started the sports entertainment craze but the matches were so dull compared to more recent matches. It was good to remember the old times.

5 out of 5 stars The Beginning Of An Era.......2006-09-05

The first five WrestleMania's for me were the 5 best WrestleMania's as far as in-ring wrestling since that was more of a focus in the early years than storylines & entertainment that it would be in it's later years. Now I'll be honest, I didn't buy the DVD set (I have the WM 1-13 VHS set from almost 10 years ago) so I don't know what's been edited or changed as far as theme music or anything of that nature.

WrestleMania I - The event that started it all with many memorable moments...including Mean Gene singing the National Anthem. There wasn't a bad match there (unless you want to count the King Kong Bundy squash of S.D. Jones) based on the type of wrestling/sports entertainment they were doing at this time. Just me but you can't have the rest without having the baby that started it all.

WrestleMania 2 - This year, they tried having it from three different locations in Chicago, Los Angeles, and New York with each having it's own main event...interesting concept but it didn't work out so well that they didn't do it again. The standout matches here were Paul Orndorff vs. Don Muraco, the WWF vs. NFL battle royal, Tag Team Champions Dream Team vs. British Bulldogs, and the Hogan vs. Bundy Steel Cage match.

WrestleMania 3 - The event that to this day still holds the world's largest indoor attendance records of 93,000+ fans. Bob Uker did commentary and was really hilarious all night. They had the ultimate dream match in sports (not just entertainment) at that time. The standout matches here were the mixed tag match involving Hillbilly Jim & King Kong Bundy (seeing Bundy squash the midget like that was really something to see), JYD vs. Harley Race, Roddy Piper's retirement/hair match vs. Adrian Adonis which lead to the birth of Brutus "The Barber" Beekcake, Bulldogs & Tito Santana vs. Hart Foundation & Danny Davis, Jake Roberts vs. Honky Tonk Man, the memorable match between Hulk & Andre and the wrestling classic between Randy Savage & Ricky Steamboat.

WrestleMania 4 - This was the first ever WWF Title tournament and was about to usher in a new era of WWF since for the first time since WM, Hogan wasn't the champion or even in the main event (at least not wrestling). The only negative I can say about this was that they tried to squeeze alot this one PPV (there were 16 matches) making the event more about "quality instead of quanity" & alot of great potential matches being real short on time to be anything memorable. Standout matches were the 20 man battle royal, Jake Roberts vs. Rick Rude, Bulldogs & Koko B. Ware vs. Islanders & Bobby Heenan, Tag Team Champions Strike Force vs. Demolition starting the longest tag team title reign in WWF history, and the finals of the tournament with Randy Savage vs. Ted Dibiase.

WrestleMania 5 - The Mega Power's Explode was the PPV where you really start to see the "sports entertainment" take effect here compared to the previous four WM's. Standout matches were Brutus Beefcake vs. Ted Dibiase, Blue Blazer (a young Owen Hart) vs. Mr. Perfect, Tag Team Champions Demolition vs. Powers Of Pain & Mr. Fuji, Jim Duggan vs. Bad News Brown (just for those who like brawls), and WWF Champion Randy Savage vs. Hulk Hogan. Also on here, Roddy Piper returned to the WWF with his classic Piper's Pit segment where he had guest Brother Love & Morton Downey Jr...your either gonna love or hate that one.

Basically, this was the beginning of sports entertainment here but this collection gives you the best WrestleMania's as far as "professional wrestling" goes.

5 out of 5 stars from a fan from that time!.......2007-01-14

the previous reviews are in my opinion, PETTY!!! Nothing will satisfy such people! This production could be let's say volume 1, hopefully, vol. 2 and 3 will come later on, and they'll include what the previous reviews complained this one doesn't have. Please keep in mind, that putting out a product is risky, and wrestling today is more entertainment than sportsmanship and technical holds! I applaud Kevin for putting it out for us oldie but goodie fans! Thanks Kevin!!! Thanks a Billion!

This dvd focuses on one of their main feuds, with the Freebirds, and this is one of the more memorable feuds with the von erichs, yeah, flair's matches w/ them are imp. but more momentum was fueled w/ the freebirds. the cover does have pics and some video clips of kevin vs. flair, but not the actual match. But the other matches are what I was looking for, the freebirds vs. von erichs feud matches, there is another one of gentleman chris adams (may he r.i.p.) vs. kevin von erich (2 matches, one which leaves kevin bloodied and taken to the er by an ambulance. I've bought other collections looking for the freebirds, but the matches aren't complete. This dvd has the complete matches, and yes, only 2 matches have the ringside commentary, but don't get discsouraged by it, the audio of the crowd, the ring announcer and the music for the wrestler's enterance is audible and the very wrestler's themselves are audible as they pant to victory. It gives you the raw feeling of what wrestling was before it became too clownish or hollywood. the audio does fade just a little, but it quickly gets restored. I hope more volumes keep coming!
although, as it seems, they might not, people want too much, when these collections are the glory of what wrestling was at world class championship wrestling, WRESTLING! buy it if you were a fan, buy it if you'd like to see awesome talented moves of kevin, and not just behemoth giants kicking, punching, slamming and yelling, wccw is truly missed!

I grew up watching all the old territories and I liked WCCW. This disk does a great job highlighting all those old matches and fueds. However some of the matches do not have the original commentary. This disk does not have the classic Kerry Von Erich versus Ric Flair match in Texas Stadium. It brought back so many warm memories of when there was a variety to pick from in wrestling. I wish in some ways it could still be like that.
