The Sopranos, Season 6, Part 1 is the most contentious release yet in the acclaimed series' history. While many fans think it jumped the shark at the exact moment Vito said "I love you, Johnny Cakes" <cringe>, this season also contains some of the series finest moments and plumbs new depths of character, while continuing to add to the body count. Things get started with a bang, literally, that unexpectedly sends Tony (James Gandolfini) to the hospital and into a coma where he experiences an alternate reality while in limbo. At one point he awakes and asks "Who am I? Where am I going?" encapsulating this season's central theme in a moment of desperation wrapped in a fever dream. But it's not all existentialism. With Tony and Uncle Junior both of the picture, the capos in the Soprano crew try to take advantage of the situation and begin jockeying for position while a reluctant Silvio (Steve Van Zandt), acting in Tony's place, struggles to keep everyone in check. Things aren't going much better for Tony's family, as A.J. (Robert Iler) confesses to Carmela (Edie Falco) that he flunked out of school, and while at Tony's bedside, swears revenge for his injury. The stress of the situation finally gets to Carmela, who takes up Dr. Melfi's (Lorraine Bracco) offer to help and finds herself in the strange position of confiding in her husband's therapist, revealing for once that she feels some guilt over making the kids complicit in how Tony makes his living—plus there's the issue of whether she really loves him. Christopher (Michael Imperioli) continues to provide much of the comic relief for the series, culminating in one of this season's best episodes when he flies out to L.A. in a bumbling attempt to get Ben Kingsley to sign on for his fledgling movie (Saw meets The Godfather), and ends up mugging Lauren Bacall for her goodie basket at an awards ceremony. Sowing further discord in the ranks, Vito (Joseph Gannoscoli) finally gets outed as homosexual, and is forced to flee for his life up to New Hampshire where he meets "Johnny Cakes." Finally, even with New York boss Johnny "Sack" Sacramoni (Vince Curatola) in prison, Phil Leotardo (Frank Vincent) makes plays against Tony and eventually sets in motion a hit against someone on Tony's crew, and now a larger war with Johnny Sack's crew seems to be looming.

Series creator David Chase seems to be saying with this season that character is destiny. If so, then Season Six, Part 1 is taking the necessary time to flesh out who these people really are, and is leaving the destiny part up for Part 2. The fact that the series' writers have been able to maintain such a strong show with so many interweaving storylines for so long is a feat not to be taken lightly. That said, this season of The Sopranos does deserve some of the criticism it's received: the Vito storyline would have been better served by resolving it in fewer episodes, and the season ending is the most unsatisfying one yet, leaving many fans wanting more. But the bottom line is that this season deserves more praise than criticism, proving that even at its weakest, The Sopranos is still the strongest show on TV.--Daniel Vancini

If you are a fan of the Sopranos, how could you not love the first part of Season Six. Once again an action packed thriller. Couldn't believe that Jr. shot Tony. But then again, there are a lot of characters that would love to see the Mob Boss dead. Can't wait for Part 2 to come out.

Like its predecessor <I>Ocean's Eleven</I>, <I>Ocean's Twelve</I> is a piffle of a caper, a preposterous plot given juice and vitality by a combination of movie star glamour and the exuberant filmmaking skill of director Steven Soderbergh (<I>Out of Sight</I>, <I>The Limey</I>). The heist hijinks of the first film come to roost for a team of eleven thieves (including the glossy mugs of Brad Pitt, Matt Damon, Bernie Mac, and Don Cheadle), who find themselves pursued not only by the guy they robbed (silky Andy Garcia), but also by a top-notch detective (plush Catherine Zeta-Jones) and a jealous master thief (well-oiled Vincent Cassel) who wants to prove that team leader Danny Ocean (dapper George Clooney) isn't the best in the field. As if all that star power weren't enough--and the eternally coltish Julia Roberts also returns as Ocean's wife--one movie star cameo raises the movie's combined wattage to absurd proportions. But all these handsome faces are matched by Soderbergh's visual flash, cunning editing, and excellent use of Amsterdam, Paris, and Rome, among other highly decorative locations. The whole affair should collapse under the weight of its own silliness, but somehow it doesn't--the movie's raffish spirit and offhand wit soar along, providing lightweight but undeniable entertainment. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Description

They're back. And then some. Twelve is the new eleven when Danny Ocean and pals return in a sequel to the cool caper that saw them pull off a $160 million heist. But 160 million doesn't go as far as it used to. Not with everyone spending like sailors on leave. Not with a mysterious someone stalking Danny and crew. It's time to pull off another stunner of a plan?or plans. With locations including Amsterdam, Paris and Rome, the direction of Steven Soderbergh and the original cast plus Catherine Zeta-Jones and others, Twelve is your lucky number.

1 out of 5 stars should be retitled "Zeta-Jones's Twelve".......2007-06-13

The plot was slightly more serious in this film, and it was dominated by Pitt and Zeta-Jones (mostly Zeta-Jones). The main drawbacks for the sequel are that the heist is not the major focus, the "supporting" characters did not get the opportunity to play pivotal roles in the heist, and it lacked the lighthearted atmosphere and stylishness of the first film. While Catherine Zeta-Jones is a very lovely woman, I felt that her plot was dull, interesting and terribly predictable, and I despised her character as the foil. The sub-plot (the heist) and the other characters deserved more screen time because that is what made me love the first movie. Can't really say much more about the movie because it was utterly forgettable and a waste of time.

3 out of 5 stars This is lazy `sequel' that tends to do nothing but bring back a bunch of celebrities.......2007-06-13

"Ocean's Twelve" faces the same difficulties as any sequel. By this I don't mean those movies that are essential components to trilogies that continue the story; I mean those movies that basically take an established cast and throw them in a completely new storyline. The problem is trying to meet the expectations of an audience that loved the first and wants a new movie to love for all the same reasons. So many people were disappointed to learn that "Ocean's Twelve" was not yet another heist movie.

This film had to be a sequel. The plot takes advantage of the relationships the characters developed in the first film, and throws in many subtle jokes the average viewer may miss if they don't listen closely. Some of the phrases like "thief a la mode" used in the film may require a bit of culture to appreciate. While Ocean's teams do work together in the same fashion as the first film, the thievery itself doesn't take the spotlight in the film. "Ocean's Eleven" was the traditional heist film in its plot development with its climax at the point of executing the plan. Ocean's Twelve breaks away from this formula in favor of developing opportunities for some great character interaction.

The film disappoints with many characters taking a back seat in their roles to such an extent that the film could have been named after Pitt's character, with the Benedict aftermath merely serving as a catalyst for the characters finding their way back together. However, it would have been unreasonable for all eleven original characters to share an equal share of the spotlight and still turn out as well. The story is more about Brad Pitt and Catherine Zeta-Jones than George Clooney and Julia Roberts. The rest of the cast perform very well and the guest-star appearances, including an unforgettable one by Bruce Willis, are hysterical. Half of the time I was unsure if the actors were even acting!! It appeared as if they were not even looking at the script, and instead talking amongst themselves like, "Hey, so how you've been?". "Oh, I `v been good, the kids at home are taking up a lot of my time, ya know". Come on now, really.

In the end, "Ocean's Twelve" is not a mere heist film but an Intelligent Comedy that may need to be watched more than once to appreciate some of the subtleties in the dialog. Just the amount of activity on this film's message board regarding some of the subtleties in the plot is a testament to the thought that went into making this film. Will "Ocean 13" rectify this, well I would have to go see it for myself.

2 out of 5 stars Boring..........2007-06-11

The first movie was great! i loved it! I expected this to be as great as the first or maybe even greater but it failed to deliver. The plot was not great and it was kind of boring... But I was glad to see the actors come back for the sequel.

A frantic and frequently amusing cocktail of Tarantino cool and Hong Kong bullet ballet, Joe (Narc) Carnahan's Smokin' Aces delivers some inspired moments of action and dark comedy in its dizzying-comic book plot about a rogue's gallery of killers on the hunt for a mob informer. At the core of Carnahan's bloody shaggy-dog tale is Buddy Israel (Jeremy Piven, offering a more desperate take on his standard hustler persona), a Vegas magician who's turned informant against the mobsters who have treated him as their personal entertainment. Wishing to close Buddy's overactive mouth permanently, the mob capo puts a bounty on the two-bit showman's head, and a horde of hitmen descends on Buddy's digs to claim the prize. The unholy crew of gunmen offer the movie's most inspired (and outlandish) moments, with R&B singer Alicia Keys (as a cool, Foxy Brown-esque assassin), Nestor Carbonell (as a torture-minded sadist), Ben Affleck and Peter Berg (low-key bail bondsmen) and Chris Pine (the leader of a trio of semi-savage brothers) among the more memorable villains. Ryan Reynolds, Ray Liotta, and Andy Garcia represent the other side of the coin as FBI agents determined to get to Buddy before the legion of doom, and the clashes between both factions produce some eye-popping gunplay. If there's any complaint to be made about Smokin' Aces, it's that the tone shifts between action-drama and hipster comedy feel forced (Carnahan struck a firmer balance between the two in his 1998 indie effort, Blood, Guts, Bullets and Octane), but the performances and shootout set pieces, as well as Carnahan's hyperactive camera work, do much to make those transitions palatable. Eagle-eyed audience members will note the presence veteran scene stealers Curtis Armstrong (Ray), David Proval (The Sopranos), and Alex Rocco (The Godfather's Moe Green) in supporting roles. -- Paul Gaita

Description

Slick Las Vegas illusionist Buddy "Aces" Israel isn't playing nice. Turns out, he's telling mob secrets to the FBI. After a $1 million contract is put out on him, Aces tries to pull his greatest disappearing act before a rogues' gallery of ex-cons, hit men and smokin' hot assassins tries to rub him out in this dark action comedy that takes no prisoners.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Sure it won't win any awards, but it was still fun to watch........2007-06-22

Believe it or not, this movie was actually relatively entertaining. Even when some pretty small parts are involved, I am always interested in seeing a movie with a cast like this. Let me list a few people who made appearances in Smokin' Aces: Ryan Reynolds, Ray Liotta, Jeremy Piven, Ben Affleck, Peter Berg, Common, Andy Garcia, Alicia Keys, "that girl from Hustle & Flow," Jason Bateman and Matthew Fox.

The movie was completely ridiculous. Ryan Reynolds started to go a little overboard at the end, but other than that the movie does not take itself seriously at all. If you try to take this movie seriously, you will be grossly disappointed. Smokin' Aces combined just about every possible stereotype into a murder-for-hire movie, but did it to be satirical and did not come across as cliché. It was so ridiculous, in fact, that I considered it almost on par with a Quentin Tarantino flick.

Call me crazy, but I liked Smokin' Aces...for what it was. I was looking for an off-the-wall, shoot-'em-up, action movie and that is exactly what I got. I was even impressed with the creativity behind the story (though the end was somewhat of a let down).

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining and satisfying........2007-06-22

This movie was entertaining from the start to the end. I enjoyed finally seeing Ryan Reynolds have a serious role in a movie, and I personally think he did quite a good job. Ray Liotta didn't really have much to work off of and I never really liked him in the first place. The plot is very cliche, but I think Carnahan did a good job with it. Some say that there's a lack of transition in between the two different styles the movie alternates between (crazed out action scenes or parts that actually move the plot of the movie forward), but I didn't really notice it. If I had to relate this to another movie I would say Lucky Number Slevin. LNS is a better movie imo, but the way they story is drawn out is similar if the flashback in LNS is removed. I was sort of disappointed with part of the outcome of the story, seemed anticlimactic but that's all up to opinion. Overall, I was satisfied and this review was pretty useless.

1 out of 5 stars Thank you for NOT smoking!.......2007-06-19

This movie was a wannabe Quentin Tarratino movie. However, where Quentin Tarratino has a unique gift with words and visuals this movie was a hodgepodge of extremely graphic violence and cliches.

Now I don't mind extreme violence. I love Kill Bill and Pulp Fiction. But those movies were clever. The writing was superb, the visuals were mesmerizing and the nods to other genre movies made watching them over and over again fresh and fun.

This movie did not have a well written script and it showed. Some of the ideas were not bad. A collection of oddball assasins all trying to take out one mob informant and the violence ratcheting up to an absurb level could have been slyly amusing. BUT the hackneyed language and cliched characters destroyed any possibility of a decent movie.

There was one plus. They did kill off Ben Afflack in the first 20 minutes. I applaud that decision.

1 out of 5 stars Ben Affleck school of sh*tty acting.......2007-06-18

Don't waste your time or money on this movie made to make musicians appear talented and talented actors appear stupid (Ray Liotta) I'm surprised that Ray took a look at this script and instead of wiping his[..]with it he was apart of the flic. Also, that cute girl from Hustle n Flow was superb in that movie, only to be an unconvincing, over-energetic lesbian with the hots for big thighed Alicia Keyes. Not buying it. There's no talent in this movie, all the good actors suck, all the musicians suck worse. If this post had negative stars, I would've given that.

5 out of 5 stars Fun.......2007-06-16

This movie was everything I'd hoped it would be. It had plenty of action and the cast was enjoyable to watch. It did seem a bit jumbled in parts but all made sense in the end. Id recommend this movie to action fans.

As noted critic Pauline Kael wrote, the 1987 box-office hit The Untouchables is "like an attempt to visualize the public's collective dream of Chicago gangsters." In other words, this lavish reworking of the vintage TV series is a rousing potboiler from a bygone era, so beautifully designed and photographed--and so craftily directed by Brian De Palma--that the historical reality of Prohibition-era Chicago could only pale in comparison. From a script by David Mamet, the movie pits four underdog heroes (the maverick lawmen known as the Untouchables) against a singular villain in Al Capone, played by Robert De Niro as a dapper caesar holding court (and a baseball bat) against any and all challengers. Kevin Costner is the naive federal agent Eliot Ness, whose lack of experience is tempered by the streetwise alliance of a seasoned Chicago cop (Sean Connery, in an Oscar-winning performance), a rookie marksman (Andy Garcia), and an accountant (Charles Martin Smith) who holds the key to Capone's potential downfall. The movie approaches greatness on the strength of its set pieces, such as the siege near the Canadian border, the venal ambush at Connery's apartment, and the train-station shootout partially modeled after the "Odessa steps" sequences of the Russian classic Battleship Potemkin. It's thrilling stuff, fueled by Ennio Morricone's dynamic score, but it's also manipulative and obvious. If you're inclined to be critical, the movie gives you reason to complain. If you'd rather sit back and enjoy a first-rate production with an all-star cast, The Untouchables may very well strike you as a classic. --Jeff Shannon

    Product Description

The critics and public agree. Brian De Palma's The Untouchables is a must-see masterpiece - glorious, fierce, larger-than-life depiction of the mob warlord who ruled Prohibition-era Chicago... and the law enforcer who vowed to bring him down. This classic confrontation between good and evil and stars Kevin Costner as federal agent Eliot Ness, Robert De Niro as gangland kingpin Al Capone and Sean Connery as Malone, the cop who teaches Ness how to beat the mob: shoot fast and shoot first.

    Product Description

Andy Garcia stars and makes his directorial debut in a passionate and historical tribute to his native Cuba. Havana in 1958 is a place of pleasure for many, but others are not happy under the rule of dictator Fulgenico Batista. As the revolutionary forces of Fidel Castro and Ernesto "Che" Guevara prepare to move on the city, Fico Fellove (Garcia)-owner of the city's classiest music nightclub, El Tropico-struggles to hold together his family and the love of a woman (In s Sastre). Observing all is The Writer (Bill Murray) an ex-patriot American who sees Fico being drawn into events as the revolution changes everything. Though Fico watches a culture vanish and a people transformed, it is his love of Cuban music that keeps his memories alive. Co-starring Dustin Hoffman and Steve Bauer.

For his first feature film as a director, Andy Garcia has crafted an ambitious and vivid love story set amid the Cuban revolution. El Tropico, an elegant nightclub, overflows with exuberant music and sinuous dance; the owner, Fico (Garcia, <I>Ocean's Eleven</I>, <I>The Untouchables</I>), and his family live a life of privilege in Havana, but Fico and his father hope to steer the brutal reign of Batista towards democratic reforms. Fico's two brothers are not so patient and get caught up in the guerilla forces that seek to overthrow Batista by force; one dies after a failed coup attempt, the other joins Fidel Castro's revolutionary army. Meanwhile, Fico and his widowed sister-in-law Aurora (Ines Sastre) fall in love, their romance unfolding in the still-thriving Havana nightlife, while during the day Castro's new regime turns as repressive as Batista's. Gorgeous cinematography captures the spectacle of the musical numbers in El Tropico, which are never less than stunning, and the depiction of the political chaos is effective and dynamic. Unfortunately, at the heart of the movie is stasis; Fico, though morally indignant, never takes any action, and his courtship with Aurora is beautifully filmed but lacks palpable heat. Clumsy dialogue and odd digressions with mobster Meyer Lansky (Dustin Hoffman, <I>Rain Man</I>) and a seemingly metaphorical character known only as the Writer (Bill Murray, <I>Lost in Translation</I>) make a long movie feel even longer. But the music is undeniable; if your feet don't itch to dance after watching <I>The Lost City</I>, you have no soul. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

    4 out of 5 stars Cuba Libre.......2007-05-21

In his feature-film directorial debut, Andy Garcia uses the screen as his canvas to paint a vibrant and wistful picture of a Havana he never really knew firsthand. In 1961, Garcia's parents fled the prison that Cuba had become under Fidel Castro. Alarmed at the sight of their five-year-old boy Andrés marching in their front yard and singing the communist hymn The Internationale, they decided to leave Cuba to raise their family in Miami Beach.
The Lost City represents Garcia's quest of sixteen years to tell this epic story of a Cuban family's struggle to grapple with the turbulent events of the communist overthrow of strong-arm dictator Fulgencio Batista in 1958--events that inevitably tear the family asunder. The film's dramatic, moving script is the final screenplay penned by the late, legendary Cuban novelist Guillermo Cabrera Infante. An early supporter of the Castro revolution, Infante's gradual disillusionment with the communist dictator forced him to flee in 1966.

The Lost City revolves around nightclub owner Fico Fellove (Garcia), who runs the El Tropico, the ritziest cabaret in downtown Havana, and his two brothers, Ricardo (Enrique Murciano) and Luis (Nestor Carbonell). The movie opens with an elaborate dance scene onstage at the club, where Fico's extended family celebrates his parents' anniversary. But as soon as the camera lurks backstage, the audience discovers that all is not well in the family, nor in Havana.

Fico's father, university professor Don Federico--played with great intelligenceby Tomas Milian (one of many Cuban expatriates among the cast and crew)--holds court in Fico's office, arguing for reasoned, democratic opposition to the brutal Batista regime. But overzealous son Ricardo predicts that a coming revolution will free the oppressed people of Cuba. Heated discussion escalates into a violent confrontation between patriarch and prodigal son, and Fico and Luis have to forcibly restrain their brother. The rift within the family ominously symbolizes the divisions that have broken out in the Fellove's island paradise, once known as the "Pearl of the Antilles."

In the tragic saga that chronicles the Fellove family's dissolution, Fico loses both brothers: Luis is executed by secret police when caught as the ringleader of an [...] attempt on Batista, and Ricardo commits suicide after betraying his family to win favor with the communists. The meaning of the movie's title emerges as we see what has been lost; the film becomes an elegiac love letter to the graceful and glamorous world in which Fico moves, but which is now slipping through his fingers as the communists impose control over every aspect of Cuban society.

Elaborate musical and dance sequences, featuring the impulsive Afro-Cuban rhythms that define Cuban music, set off the onscreen action. Rumba and mambo show-stoppers make The Lost City the kind of fusion of light entertainment and serious drama that American movie studios have forgotten how to make. But what most grabbed me were the ballet scenes, featuring the lithe agility of dancer Lorena Feijóo, who in real life is principal ballerina for the San Francisco Ballet.

This kind of filmmaking threw many critics for a loop. But for me, The Lost City comes off more like a Bollywood extravaganza than does the mostly anemic "serious" fare Hollywood serves up these days. The most convincing scenes are in the love story between Fico and brother Luis's aggrieved widow, Aurora, played by the exquisite Inés Sastre. Emmanuel Kadosh's camera simply loves her serene, alluring beauty: as Fico falls for her, so do all the men in the audience.

Most crucially, Infante and Garcia don't whitewash or gloss over the true history of Fidel Castro's tyrannical rise to power: he is shown for exactly the brutal dictator he was and is. One wouldn't think that actor Jsu Garcia's portrayal of Ernesto "Che" Guevara as a murderous goon--rather than as the Martyred Saint of the People--would be controversial almost forty years after his death, but it has caused The Lost City to be banned in many Latin American countries.
Although uneven in a couple of scenes, the film overall is gripping and beautifully made, full of forceful, evocative performances that would make any new director proud. In a memorable cameo, Dustin Hoffman nails gangster Meyer Lansky's quietly menacing demeanor. Fans of The Incredibles's sultry "Mirage" character will get a glimpse of actress Elizabeth Peña playing a communist bureaucrat who threatens to shut down Fico's nightclub, unless he removes the orchestra's saxophone ("an instrument of imperialist oppression"). Bill Murray provides comic relief as "the Writer," an obvious stand-in for novelist Infante. Some of his jokes fall flat, but altogether he injects a sense of uneasiness that foreshadows the beginning of the end for Fico's fortunes.

Emmanuel Kadosh's vibrant cinematography bathes the screen in rich hues reminiscent of Gordon Willis' Technicolor prints of The Godfather, Part II (also filmed in the Dominican Republic). Production designer Waldemar Kalinowski and art director Carlos Menéndez re-create a rich, elegant Havana, adding first-rate production values to this low-budgeted movie.

Oddly, The Lost City was panned by most critics in the U.S., presumably for its length and uneven execution. However, after reading many of the reviews, I suspect more than just a little opposition to be rooted in politics rather than aesthetics. Typical of the reviews was Stephen Holden's in the New YorkTimes:

The impoverished masses of Cubans who embraced Castro as a liberator appear only in grainy, black-and-white news clips, awkwardly shoehorned into the movie to fill in historical blanks, and in some buffoonish parodies of sour Communist apparatchiks barking orders once Mr. Castro takes over.
Almost fifty years after Castro seized power and turned Cuba into a death camp and a sewer, its suffering captives still risk shark-infested waters and treacherous currents to reach the freedom of America's shores. Yet to many American Baby Boomers, nostalgic over the red "Che" t-shirts of their pampered college years, the nightmare reality just ninety miles from American shores might as well be invisible.

Earlier this summer, when the aging Castro went under the knife and, for the first time, temporarily relinquished power to his brother Raul, you could witness more accurately what Cuba's muzzled masses probably felt: thousands of Cuban-Americans of all ages and incomes filled downtown Miami, celebrating Fidel's impending demise, waving Cuban and American flags, literally dancing in the streets.

In The Lost City, this same spirit moves Fico Fellove, who chooses to live and work alone in poverty and freedom, as a dishwasher in New York City, rather than as a slave in the socialist "paradise" of Havana:

I can't go back. It's too dangerous...for my soul. I have no money. But here, I feel as though I'm worth more than I ever was.

5 out of 5 stars The Lost City.......2007-03-15

A very good historical account of the early days of Castro's revolution. It is narrated as a personal experience. It shows how families were separated by either murdering the oposition or having to flee the country.

5 out of 5 stars Saga and Drama.......2007-03-12

Wow. What a movie. This is defintely to keep you on to the screen until the very end. Good actors such as Dustin Hoofman,Bill Murray. But my favorites such as Steven Bauer and Andres Garcia were spectacular. Makes me want to be living in that Era, just because the costumes and the backdrop was so very real. Beautifual job Mr. Garcia from un Boricua.

2 out of 5 stars Boring and scattered.......2007-02-17

This movie is about a nightclub owner in Cuba shortly before Castro took power and thereafter. It is too long and tries to cover too many things. As a result, it never develops any drama or tension and the characters never develop into people you understand or care about.

5 out of 5 stars An amazingly heartfelt and educational film.......2007-02-08

The word "patria" means homeland in Spanish...and sometimes, when we live in the land of freedom, we forget what it means and we forget how to love it. This is the first movie that I have seen that depicts the harshness of Castro's revolution in a way for people to understand. It provides concrete examples of why it's so horrible...everything from taking your property to having to leave your family. It also briefly shows the jails where so many political prisoners were held in the years to follow. It wasn't only those that worked for Batista...in the following years, thousands of men and women were imprisoned for their political views without due process.

If that time in the history of Cuba had to be summed up in 2 hours, Andy Garcia hit the nail on the head as best as it could be done.

As noted critic Pauline Kael wrote, the 1987 box-office hit <I>The Untouchables</I> is "like an attempt to visualize the public's collective dream of Chicago gangsters." In other words, this lavish reworking of the vintage TV series is a rousing potboiler from a bygone era, so beautifully designed and photographed--and so craftily directed by Brian De Palma--that the historical reality of Prohibition-era Chicago could only pale in comparison. The movie approaches greatness on the strength of its set pieces, such as the siege near the Canadian border, the venal ambush at Connery's apartment, and the train-station shootout partially modeled after the "Odessa steps" sequences of the Russian classic <I>Battleship Potemkin</I>. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

    Description

In THE UNTOUCHABLES, federal agent Elliot Ness leads a group of mob fighters with the intent of taking out the infamous Al Capone in 1930's Prohibition-era Chicago. Realizing that practical methods will not work in securing Capone's capture, Ness and his men resort to using even more force in order to take down the Chicago mob boss once and for all.

    4 out of 5 stars The Untouchables.......2007-06-08

This movie has action, mystery and hope. The story line twists and turns and has a few surprises. Its not for children under 13 due to the violence.

1 out of 5 stars Not the Real.......2007-06-07

I can't see how anyone can like this movie after seeing it. 1st off, Elliott Ness owes his success to Hollywood writers.Elliott did nothing to stop capone, Nitti, Paul (the waiter) Ricca or anyone else in the Chicago Outfit. Do your mafia history, The made up Character of Frank Nitti is just Disgusting. He was a respected, Feared mobster great in strategy although Paul Ricca directed them all. Capone was fared and very Brutal. Elliott Ness would never confront him like the movie showed. I watched this movie once and never opened it again, Please dont waste your money & time. For the real mafia lovers disreguard the people who left comments saying that they loved the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Eliot Ness vs Al Capone in prohibition-era Chicago.......2007-06-04

"The Untouchables" tells the tale of crusading Federal Agent Eliot Ness (Kevin Costner) bringing down the gang warlord Al Capone (Robert Di Niro) in prohibition-era gangland Chicago.

In these corrupt times no-one can be trusted - least of all the Chicago Police Force - so Ness recruits a disparate band of like-minded crimefighters - wise old Irish beat cop Malone (Sean Connery), young Italian-American hot-shot police recruit Stone (Andy Garcia) and an accountant (Charles Martin Smith) an accountant!? yes Capone was actually brought down for tax evasion!

Director Brian De Palma's over-the-top style works superbly in this film bringing these larger than life characters bursting to life, immeasurably enhanced by Ennio Morricone's superb score.

Connery is moving as the wise old cop, De Niro is spendidly evil as Capone, and Billy Drago is particularly memorable as Capone's oily henchman Frank Nitti - but the entire cast is excellent.

    De Palma's finest achievement.

The picture and sound quality on the DVD is excellent.

DVD extras consist of interviews with the film-makers but sadly no commentary.

1 out of 5 stars FRANK NITTI'S FAMILY SHOULD SUE.......2007-04-13

among all the five star reviews, it's funny nobody mentioned the blatant
misrepresentation of frank nitti in this movie.
he was not a rat-faced psychopath who was thrown off a building by elliot ness as portrayed in this movie. mr. nitti was second in command, and after capone was incarcerated, nitti ran the mob for 13 years.
his life ended when he allegedly committed suicide in 1943.
i don't mind movies blurring the facts in the name of dramatic license,
but in this case being completely blind to actual events will earn this film only one star from me.
btw, de palma also ruined "the black dahlia."
please mr. de palma, don't make anymore movies.

5 out of 5 stars My Review Of The Untouchables On DVD.......2007-04-01

The Special Edition of the 1987 Brian DePalma classic is better than from the version I had seen on Cinemax years ago. The special features were also a delight with interviews by DePalma, Kevin Costner, Sean Connery and others. Now if only Paramount releases the 1993 Untouchables TV series on DVD, that would be cool.

Sixteen years after Francis Ford Coppola won his second Oscar for <I>The Godfather II</I> (his first was for the 1972 <I>Godfather</I>), the director and star Al Pacino attempted to revive the concept one more time. Despite an elaborate plot that involves Michael Corleone seeking redemption through the Vatican while simultaneously preparing his nephew (Andy Garcia) to take over the Corleone family, the film fails to take shape as a truly meaningful experience in the way the preceding movies do. Still, Pacino is very moving as an elder Michael, filled with regret and trying hard to make amends with his wife (Diane Keaton) and grown children (one of whom is played, and not all that well, by the director's daughter, Sofia Coppola). <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

    Description

In this third film in the epic Corleone trilogy, Al Pacino reprises the role of powerful family leader Michael Corleone. Now in his 60's, Michael is dominated by two passions: freeing his family from crime and finding a suitable successor. That successor could be fiery Vincent (Andy Garcia)... but he may also be the spark that turns Michael's hope of business legitimacy into an inferno of mob violence.

5 out of 5 stars The One To See.......2007-04-05

I'm sort of a late-comer to the Godfather movies and while I enjoyed part 1, enjoyed part 2 a little more, I was blown away by part 3. It's also the one I've seen the most. Of course, this it at the beginning of the era in Al Pacino's career where I think he did his very best work: GIII, Glengarry Glen Ross, Scent of a Woman, and Carlito's Way. To me, this Godfather movie serves as a far better character study because it allows the reflection and depth that only an older Michael can show. And better than ever does he display the anger that gives way to frustration that is simmering beneath the surface. No, I suppose it isn't much like 1 and 2. Pacino's range here is riveting, from his heart attack to his confession to Cardinal Lamberto, which almost brought tears to my eyes. To all the awful things he says he's done, the Cardinal simply replies to a man who thinks he is beneath forgiveness, "Gone. It is gone." Michael sinks to the ground in tears because of a sugar attack and asks for orange juice - a mighty man brought to his knees by old age, diabetes, and sin. Extremely powerful, coupled with the grace and gentleness of the Cardinal. Very powerful. The raw, fierce display of emotion at the end when tragedy hits harder than ever was fitting. While I enjoyed 1 and 2, no way I could get wrapped up in them like this.

The plot is actually rather simple. To start, Michael takes care of what I call "old business." He reconciles with those he has made rich, essentially trying to go out on top and sincerely get away from crime. So what he does is by way of a back-against-the-wall Archbishop, Michael agrees to take on and relieve a Vatican holding company of an exhorbitant debt. But in exchange Michael wants majority control over the company's board of directors. Fine. Well... until, because the company is both very old and very European, the deal brings in a host of shady, threatening, and powerful people, such as Don Lucchesi and Don Altobello. It is not in the interest of these people that Michael should get control. The new Pope (interestingly, an Italian who chooses the name John Paul I) attempts to "clean house" and among many other things, get the company out of shady hands. So the Pope finds himself on the wrong side of some of these characters, and the Mafia is indeed implicated in the death of the fictional John Paul I. The real-life John Paul I only held the office from August 26 to September 28, 1978, when he died suddenly. Wild rumors had spread about a poisoned coffee. Francis kind of takes some of that and runs with it a bit. It's quite a unique story, actually.

In reality, this movie is about things coming full circle, people paying for what they've done, and as Michael says, the new overthrows the old. There is a scene in the back of a car where Michael's face distinctly passes in and out of deep shadow as the car travels down the road, sort of representative of his life. Had Scorcese done this it would have been 50 times more gruesome and had others done it it would have probably involved the Illuminati and who knows what else, but Francis finds the perfect balance between story, fictional realism, and the violence, which is necessary but not at all shocking or overly brutal.

3 out of 5 stars It should have ended with Godfather 2.......2007-03-01

I don't hate this movie, it has several strong points, but in truth I can't say it's a great end to the Godfather series. I've come to the conclusion that Godfather II should have been the last Michael Corleone film. That's because every time I watch it I get chills during those last few moments, a piece of perfect and haunting cinema history. Somehow those last seconds sum up everything Michael might have had and everything he might have been - they are utterly heartbreaking. And they are enough. The message didn't need to be carried into a third film explaining about Michael's regrets - from the end of part 2 we already knew! Michael has had his brother killed and is emotionally dead, so we don't really need to see his physical death and deterioration in Part 3.

So what did I like about Part 3? Several scenes stick in my mind. When Vincent killed Joe Zaza there was a flash of Vito / Sonny / Michael from the old days. When Michael told Kay he'd always loved her and she said it back, I couldn't hold back the tears, although it did feel a little contrived since Kay had remarried and we weren't given a sense of who her new husband was. The ending was the best bit, symbolic and achingly sad. Al Pacino's final moments were heartbreaking, as I knew they would be.

The performances are generally good, particularly from Al Pacino, although his character unfortunately no longer requires him to use his remarkable quiet voiced anger that he displayed so chillingly in the first two films. I thought Andy Garcia was only OK as Vincent, his character wasn't really fleshed out enough to be truly compelling. Talia Shire's character, Connie, seemed to be a completely different woman, and it was strange how Michael suddenly let her sit in on business meetings. The main problem I had was that Mary, Michael's daughter, and Vincent, did not have any chemistry between them so it was impossible to see how they had fallen in love. Their romance was unrealistic because they never acted 'in love', there were no intense glances as there were between Apollonia and Michael in Godfather 1, for example. The whole 'forbidden romance between cousins' plot seemed unneccesary and a bit of a strange choice. I also would have liked more closure on Michael's first marriage to Apollonia, it wasn't clear if he ever told Kay before or how she found out or how she (or their children) felt about it, they didn't even seem surprised which didn't seem quite right.

Overall, the Godfather III is a difficult movie to review. It isn't a classic like part 1 and 2, but it's not terrible either. I just question whether it was ever needed in the first place. Perhaps 'Part 3' should have been left up to our imaginations, with Al Pacino's dark-eyed intensity from the final scenes of Godfather 2 forever etched in our minds.

5 out of 5 stars The Sins of the Fathers..........2007-01-10

I consider this movie a fitting endpiece to the saga of the Corleone Family. I think it is the best and most deeply moving piece of the Trilogy.

It is about the end game of the quintessential idealist, Michael Corleone.
Whereas his father (Marlin Brando) was the honor bound pragmatist, his brother Sonny was the violent loose cannon, his brother Freco was the gutless whiner, Michael was moved by his ideals and what he considered was right.

In Godfather 1, we see him throwing away his ideals for Family protection, and in Godfather 2, we see him turned to stone by his own actions. This is stressed in the Birthday party scene at the end of Godfather 2.

In Godfather 3, we see a sick and dying Godfather haunted by the once idealistic Michael Corleone he was. The idealism is returning to him, and of neccesity there had to be recompence for the earlier sins he did. Yet the Sins of the Father affected all of his attempted repentance. He paid the ultimate price at the end by the death of his daughter being part of the neccesary attonement. And after all that, in the end, he has visions of dancing with the most important women in his life, all which he threw away by his behavior. He died totally alone and unloved.

My favorite caracter was Joe Montagna (Joey Zasa) When Vince blew him away, I cheered! Could that caracter be based on John Gotti? Hmmmmm...

5 out of 5 stars By far the best, the mafia and the future.......2007-01-10

The third part is nearly the most interesting because we finally have
these Corleones in the modern world. They have sold their casinos and
gambling institutions, they have never been in drugs or prostitution
and the new Godfather, Michael Corleone, wants to get respectable,
recognized by the catholic church and world influential. So he tries to
donate big quantities of money to the Vatican bank in exchange of a
majority share in the Vatican's real estate institution. He fails at
first but goes on and tries to find the invisible ways into the
labyrinth. So he makes friends with as many people as possible in the
financial, religious and political circles around the church. He finds
out he has to go to Sicilia to get in touch with an important cardinal
who is actually elected Pope, but does not last more than a few months.
They have special teas that make you sleep very long in the Vatican.
But this third part shows a great evolution of the Sicilian-American
and Italian-American communities in the US. Violence is becoming less
and less easy in the US. They have to respect the law and law-enforcing
institutions are too strong and powerful for them to be neglected or
under-evaluated. Then there is a shift in that mafia violence. The
Corleones going to Sicilia, among other things to take part in the
first operatic production of Michael's own son who is an opera tenor,
violence catches them up and Sicilia becomes the theatre of what they
can't do in the US any more. And once again Michael goes through and is
well protected by the men of his nephew who he has just appointed his
successor, and also by chance. The final gun directed at him cannot be
prevented from firing, though the assassin will be shot back on the
spot by the new Don Corleone, but Michael is once again lucky and the
bullet does not reach him. For more details rush to the DVD. Thus the
third part ends in drama, even melodrama. But it is definitely clearer
than the second that is too long and too complex and entangled. We seem
though to be living the last powerful years of this family that has to
accept the challenge of becoming legal and respectable. In other words
the world is changing and the mafia along with it.

3 out of 5 stars Not really all that bad.......2006-09-18

"You know, Michael; now that you're so respectable, I think you're more dangerous than ever. I liked you better when you were just a common Mafia hood."

I have finally seen all three entries in The Godfather trilogy. Part III is widely considered a bad film and has been named one of the worst sequels of all time. But after finally seeing all three movies I can justly say that this movie is not deserving of the bad rep it gets.

In the final installment of the Godfather Trilogy, an aging Don Michael Corleone seeks to legitimize his crime family's interests and remove himself from the violent underworld but is kept back by the ambitions of the young. While he attempts to link the Corleone's finances with the Vatican, Michael must deal with the machinations of a hungrier gangster seeking to upset the existing Mafioso order and a young protégé's love affair with his daughter.

This movie was probably not necessary but its here and although it is leagues behind Parts I and II, its still a great movie. I think that's it greatest fault too, that its predecessor's were so great that it couldn't help but be inferior. Al Pacino gives us an aged Michael Corleone but, at least to me, he wasn't as believable as he was in the previous two. Here he was Al Pacino and lacked the intensity and, well, believability of the character he showed previously. Maybe that's because of the character's age and he's so different than what we have perceived him as in the other two movies. But, you eventually accept him again as Michael and Pacino gives another stellar performance. Talia Shire returns as Connie, Michael's sister only this time she tries to pull some strings and get into things. Shire's performance is good but the problem is that this is unbelievable for the character. In the previous two Godfather films she was there, not involved in the business in any way and suddenly here she's thrown herself into the fray. Andy Garcia plays Vinnie, Sonny's illegitimate son. He plays Pacino Sonny's role in the original Godfather and it seems he's trying to imitate James Caan's presence instead of being his son. It works in the long run but it feels like he could have done something more with the character. Diane Keaton is Michael's ex-wife Kay. She doesn't really do much until near the end of the movie and seems like she is only there to further the ending of the movie. Her role is very detached from what she did in Parts I and II where she was Michael's loving wife whom he was trying to hold on to. Here, she's married to another man and doesn't have an impact on Michael until, as I said, the ending and even there her role isn't vital. Sofia Coppola is Mary Corleone, Michael's daughter, and she completely slaughters the character. Did she know that this film wasn't a comedy? She doesn't speak in the movie, she awkwardly yells and is reminiscent of the stereotypical bad actor that reads their lines monotonously. And George Hamilton takes over Robert Duvall's role as B.J. Harrison. George Hamilton? Whoever the hell decided to replace Duvall after he refused to reprise his role should be shot but then to go and cast George Hamilton was just wrong. He sticks out and I was waiting for him to rip open a bad of Baked Ritz crackers and start munching on them. I'm sorry but I just couldn't take him seriously. The rest of the cast does their job well and their really isn't a weak link outside of Sofia.

I personally didn't think the music was as good as it was in the previous two installments. There wasn't anything memorable outside of the "Godfather Waltz". That's not to say it was bad, because it wasn't. The music perfectly complemented each scene it was used in. It's just that it wasn't as good as previous efforts.

I don't think this should have been called The Godfather Part III, it should have been titled The Godfather: The Musical because after every few scenes another musical piece would pop up. This, accompanied with the editing, made it feel like a TV movie. At the end of 97% of each scene the transition was a fade to black. I was honestly expecting a commercial to pop up one of these times. There were just too many musical pieces in the film as well. We get a long one at the beginning, a few shorter ones scattered throughout the middle and another long one at the end. The whole final movement of the film in which two intrigues are inter cut with Anthony performing in an opera are supposed to be suspenseful, but they're not. They're so confusing that we don't even know where the hell one of the intrigues is taking place. Is it in Rome? Sicily? London? I don't know.

The whole of the movie is a tad convoluted and hard to believe. Michael is trying to go legit with...the Vatican? This only adds to the confusion of the movie. This entry is easier to grasp and understand what's going on than Part II was but you are left scratching your head at some points. This will definitely require a second viewing just as Part II does. Another problem is that this feels like a sequel unlike Part II, which felt like a natural continuation of the original. You're also just thrown into this world without so much as an introduction or a re acquaintance to some characters so you're left to figure it out on your own which can be pretty annoying when you're trying to do that and follow the complex storyline all at once. But one of the biggest eyebrow raisers is the incest plotline. That's right. Vinnie and Mary are first cousins but are in love with each other. The movie even acknowledges that this is wrong but it's still kept. At the it is supposed to hit us hard due to the circumstances but it just doesn't because you didn't believe in it in the first place because it is wrong. That plotline was unneeded and came out of left field. That was probably the worst addition to this film next to Sofia herself.

But what really brings this movie together is its spectacular ending. The whole scene on the steps is superbly shot and you really feel the raw surge of emotion that's going on in that scene. You feel for Michael because of everything he did to try and right his wrongs thus far. But directly after that is the death of Michael Corleone which is tragic yet fulfilling. He is 77 years old and retired to Sicily, alone and distraught when he dies from a stroke. Before he dies he thinks of the women he loved and ultimately lost due to his choices in life. We feel for this character and when he dies, at least with me, a surge of emotion came over because you think back to the journey we went through with this man and here is the end of a legacy. The whole way it is shot and presented struck a chord with me and was the highlight of the movie Michael is alone with nobody left because they are either dead or have left him. It's a sad way to go but perfectly executed here. The music that accompanies it is superb as well. It isn't an original piece conducted for the movie but it works amazingly well. It adds so much to the scene and is a great listen on its own. I cannot say enough good things about this ending. Its just superb and a truly great way to end this monumental series.

The Godfather Part III is a great movie. It isn't up to snuff with its predecessors but it can't be expected to be. It is wholly undeserving of the bad rep it gets because underneath, there is a great movie that has just gotten flack for being inferior and a sequel. Despite some rough edges and lacking in areas that the original two excelled in, The Godfather Part III is very worthy of bearing the Godfather name.

<I>When a Man Loves a Woman</I> is a dumb title (not <I>another</I> classic pop song, please) for a very smart movie. A kind of gender-switch take on <I>The Lost Weekend</I>, it's about a woman (Meg Ryan) whose alcoholism almost destroys her family. That may sound like just another TV movie, but <I>When a Man Loves a Woman</I> is so authentic in detail and emotion, that everything about it seems fresh, urgent, and engrossing. That's because the film is grounded in the actual experience of co-writer Al Franken (assisted by <I>Rain Man</I> scripter Ronald Bass). Franken is best known for his affiliation with <I>Saturday Night Live</I> and <I>Politically Incorrect</I>, and as the author of <I>Rush Limbaugh Is a Big Fat Idiot, and Other Observations</I>. You may recall that Franken is the creator of Stuart Smalley, 12-step programmer extraordinaire. Well, if you want to know how Stuart was born, you can start here. This is no comedy, however. In fact, one of the most painful realizations comes when attractive, "good-time girl" Alice Green (Ryan) and her husband (Andy Garcia) begin to realize how much of a role alcohol played in their marriage and in bringing them together in the first place. The issues and experiences confronted in this movie go far beyond the stuff you see on <I>Oprah</I>. <I>--Jim Emerson</I>

5 out of 5 stars One of best love movies ever!!!.......2007-03-23

I have watched this movie probably 20 times....consider it one of the best love movies ever along with "The Notebook", "The Wedding Date", "Sleepless in Seattle", and some of the oldies. Keep em' coming!!

    4 out of 5 stars Alcoholism.......2007-03-09

This movie was wonderful to show to adolescents who are struggling with addictions. What I really enjoyed about the movie, and its portrayal of addiction, was the emotional work involved after the main character left rehab. It showed the struggle to regain normalcy (if there ever was normal within the family). It showed the struggle of learning how to live together sober and how to enjoy life sober. She ended up leaving her husband for a time in order to work on herself before trying to work on her marriage, which was a healthy thing to do. Great movie.

5 out of 5 stars I have always loved this movie!.......2007-02-11

Far under rated! Total BS that both Meg & Andy were not at least nominated for Golden Globes. This is the only movie I actually like Andy Garcia in actually. He seems to play a lot of shady slimy characters which I really do not feel suite him. In this role he was so loving, kind, honest, and devoted. Even with his typical male issues he was still the husband I'd want. Meg did an amazing job as an alcoholic and it's a very difficult and commendable role to take on. Loved the little girls in it as well. The littlest one just takes my heart. Such a sweetie!

    5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-02-03

This movie is fantastic and it really shows the destructive power of addiction. More importantly, it shows the enduring power of love! I never get tired of this film.
