I can't believe I had never heard of or seen this movie before. Awesome commentary on American media and the use of propaganda in America, still relevent today. Lots of famous people are parodied in this film, including Marilyn Monroe, Tennessee Ernie Ford, Jerry Lee Lewis, Jayne Mansfield, and wonderful cameo appearences by Walter Winchell, and Mike Wallace, playing themselves. I show this film in my college level "Media & Society" class, excellent perspective for young people especially since it was made in 1957, released in '58. Andy should be given an Oscar for this performance.

I'm not going to write about the symbolism or get into political jousting where this film is concerned because that doesn't matter to me in the least. All I know is that from the first time I saw this approximately 10 years ago on AMC one Saturday morning, I've wondered who the hell was Andy Griffith's agent back then and why did he keep him out of movies of this callibur and genre. I barely remembered that Matthau, Remmick and Franciosa were even in it. He engulfed each and every scene he was in like nothing I'd ever seen before. He chewed up anyone else who had the misfortune of even being in the same scene with him in this movie.

With this being one of his first movies (the other standout being No Time for Sargents) you'd think he'd have been typecast as a villian, and maybe that's why his agent avoided his getting this type of role. His take of the down-home county boy radio show ham who hands out bits of wisdom as Lonesome Rhodes starts out like a quaint little fire in a pot-bellied stove that warms you and is comforting. But all of that quickly gets out of control as he is discovered and the flames of his new level of fame whip out of control and engulfs EVERYTHING AND EVERYONE that comes in contact with Lonesome. (Even his loyal listening audience)

Andy's boisterous, obnoxious and outrageous performance might have easily come off as over the top in someone else's hands but he is so believable that you too can feel the wave of ego build inside him yourself, yet you can only do much like Patricia Neal does; stand back with your mouth open in astonishment and hold on for the ride or get run down like a dog in the street. Andy's Lonesome Rhodes character is much like an approaching train wreck, you know it's coming, you know it's going to be a bad scene littered with bodies when it's over but somehow you just can't look away. WHAT A RIDE!!!!

Walter Matthau's final speech in this movie could be played tomorrow and might be more current than it was in 1957, but that's secondary to the overall quality.
This movie is a staggering achievement on any objective level. Andy Griffith puts up an acting portrayal that really has to be seen to be believed, and it's a true shame it's not better known. There are movies that make a viewer stand up and take notice. Citizen Kane, On The Waterfront, The Godfather...This movie is at minimum their equal, and not to be overly hyperbolic, a superior to many movies we regard as classics. "A Face in the Crowd" is why movies are worth watching.

You practically never see Andy Griffith in a film. Noted for his roles as "Andy Griffith" and "Mattlock," many might think him one dimensional. Although it's clear that he was perfect to portray the sheriff of a small town via his performance in "A Face in the Crowd," he delivers an Oscar worthy performance in this behind the scenes entertainment classic. Performances by supporting cast Patricia Neal and Walter Mattheau are equally impressive. A film that all who work in media should see, liken to Lumet's "Network" and/ or Lee's "Bamboozled."

Yes, if you're looking for a feel-good movie, you should definitely get this one. Darrah Cloud knows how to put together a story with bang-up endings, and this movie with its two story threads has two great endings, back-to-back.

But there is some bad news. Naomi Judd (unless of course you're a fan of hers) is not much of an actress here. Her scenes look more like a personal appearance, with lines.

The daughter is cute and believable. The uncle is also credible.

The love story is totally botched. The pacing is disjointed. And there is a lack of motivation. It is simply not credible, so don't expect to be touched by it.

Andy is Andy, and he adds a touch a quality that makes the others look more amateurish than they otherwise would.

The rock music (and the absence of Christmas music) was a bit grating. It was sad that the school kids couldn't relate to any Christmas carols. They had to have rock. The raw, harsh tone of the girl singing what were supposed to be Christmas songs was a dischordant note for me. Others might not be bothered.

Still, I say don't miss it. There aren't that many that you can afford to pass it up. Darrah Cloud's "A Holiday for Love" is a much better movie, so if you're only getting one, get that one instead.

I really liked this Christmas movie, but I don't understand why the identical movie has two different names. The new principal (hatchet-man) has come to Bethlehem to revamp the high school and falls for the music teacher who is helping his niece.

These days it's hard to find a good, family movie that tells a great story without being too sentimental at the same time. I really enjoyed the way Naomi Judd brought out the best in Gerald McRaney and his niece. This was a heart-warming movie of many triumphs.

Shut Up Stupid Future Critics!!.......2007-03-16

I went ahead and bought this and it is really cool! Just because the first few seasons of the dub weren't as good doesn't mean this one is the same. This one was totaly awesome because nearly absolutly nothing was edited out of this DVD. Sega is also making sure 4kids dosen't edtit out anything important or cool. Like when Shadow was attacking Tails and Cosmo, Shadow was beating the crap out of Tails and it is all on this DVD. There is also some blood that was left in as well. So don't start critisising anything until you have personaly seen it yourself. I thought this DVD set made a great series finally for Sonic X.

It should be noted that the Amazon description for this product is WRONG. It does NOT contain both English and Japanese audio tracks. No 4Kids DVDs ever do (save for a few rare, uncut releases that were discontinued).

Sonic X may not be one of 4Kids WORST dubbed animes, but it ranks fairly high. Things are edited out for seemingly no reason, even the mildest of violence is cut, Japanese text and references are blanked and not even translated, and entire episodes are re-arranged. Not to mention, plenty of references to the Sonic games are not translated properly.

This "season" of episodes 53-78 received some of the worst dubbing treatment of the entire series. These episodes in their original version contained very mild violence coupled with story arcs that were directed to older children around the ages of 9-14. It was still perfectly fine for younger children, but 4Kids decided to cut it to ribbons anyway removing anything in reference to character violence and death, instead re-writing the scripts and piecing together footage to make it seem like nothing ever happened. I do not think children should be exposed to graphic violence, but there was none of that in Sonic X and 4Kids has practically destroyed the entire Sonic X series.

Do not buy this set if you are looking for a high-quality, entertaining product.

If this was dubbed well, I would rate this a 5, I love series 2 of Sonic X, but NOT THIS VERSION. I'm sorry but this was the worst dubbed 26 episodes of Sonic X ever. They delete Cosmo and Molly's death, and change Tails' feelings completely showing NO love or romance. Cream, Vector and Sonic's horrid voices or the screechy Rebecca Honig, the painfully annoying and Barney Gumble sounding Carter Cathcart, and the bland, emotionless, and dweeby Jason Anthony Griffith (Though on voice matters, if there was ANY voice that made me stop watching this show ever again in English, it's Rebecca Honig as Cream, gave me a headache listening to it, that is NOT how a kid sounds). That horrid replacement music. The original made me cry, but after episode 74, I stopped and just read the edits and such, and what I read about episodes 77 and 78 appalled me, no true anime fan should buy this DVD set, it's an insult to anime, it's an insult to emotions, and it's an insult to Sonic. download the episodes in Japanese or French if you can find them, it's better then this. Trust me, I watched the English episodes as well as the Japanese episodes. Naruto was a good edited dub, this is not.

Some of the edits involve editing out Molly's death, Changing Cosmo's death completely to something else that makes it look like a bad fanfic (and if my friend Jason is reading this, I said BAD Fanfic, NOT JUST fanfic), they also cut out the part where Knuckles was trying to save Zelkova which I felt was an inportant character part for Knuckles and even the bad guy before he died. They also changed Tails feelings towards Cosmo to just friendship rather then love, why? it was some junk on seeds and such, it made no sence and made it sound nasty. the ONLY episodes I think were dubbed decently were episodes 73 and 74 but they were still badly voiced and the music was still annoying. And even so, some translations was pathetic, like when Tails attacked Shadow to protect Cosmo, when Shadow struck Tails, instead of Cosmo yelling to Tails by name in fear for his safety, she just said quietly "he's hurt" talk about stating the obvious....... Why does Cosmo's actress have to sound old and emotionless? in Japanese Cosmo is an 8 year old girl full of emotion, did 4Kids not know that?

Being the Sonic fan and Anime purist I am, I am making a fandub of this show to see if I can make a better, uncut and more in character English version.

I can say this, THIS IS the final release of Sonic X, TMS and 4Kids confermed it to me resently in a email from each. So maybe with this gone for a bit, things can get back on track for Sonic, and when another company hopefully licences Sonic X, they can make a better english versions with the original music, original story and better voices, especially Sonic's (it doesn't actually have to be Ryan Drummond or Jaleel White, just someone who can fit Sonic's character like those two were able).

So for now I do say SO LONG SONIC!

It is based on Sonic Acventure 2. It does not go into who the real Shadow is (to find this play the game and pay close atention to the cut sceens). Very fast paced. Great entertainment

The Truth.......2007-02-17

I can't beleve you people think that on the English version Maria was not killed but arested. That is not true! When that retired policeman was telling Scarlet and Mr. Stuart his story about what happened at the ark fifty years ago, it showed him pointing a gun at Maria and when she pulled the lever, yes they did skip the scean when she was shot but after that, the guy was crying and regreting he ever shot her, he wouldn't be doing that if nothing happened to her, besides he was pointing a gun at her and telling her to get away from the lever and she disobays him what else would you have expected to happen. When he said they took her away, he ment her dead body because they were camanded to take the casualty's bodies back to Earth to have them identified and that is when Professor Garald found her name in the list of those who died when the ark was shut down. If Maria was still alive and was arested as you guys say she was, even 4kids would know that Shadow wouldn't waist his time trying to destroy the earth, he would go strait to the prison that was holding her and break her out.

Man, these shows are so great together, I personally think Project Shadow should've been a full-length movie and released into theaters. Obviouslly, there's some parts that need to be edited, but there's many scenes in it, especially the end, that make it look like it should've been a full-length film and released into theaters.

Sonic Adventure 2 Adaptation!.......2007-01-29

To start things off, let me just say that Sonic Adventure 2, or SA2, is my absolute very favorite video game. EVER. Better even than Pokemon! (For me, that is definitely saying something)

While there were still some differences between SA2 and the Sonic X adapt, I have to say I loved it. Still the same blue blur that rocked the world with a Sonic Boom 15 years ago. Amazing. 15 years, and he's still making new game-totally awesome. Despite what those so called 'profession' reviewers say, I loved the new Sonic '06 game, Sonic Heroes was immensely fun, (Who couldn't love it? Totally awesome Neo Metal Sonic claiming that he was 'the one true Sonic.') and Shadow the Hedgehog had an awesome story.

But, now for the review. The Project Shadow SA2 adapt is probably one o the deepest Sonic stories ever. Shadow the hedgehog is a Mewtwo-like character, planning to gain revenge for the death of his best and only friend-a girl named Maria.

The military, GUN, mercilessly murdered her, and now, Shadow aims for revenge! Although, in the dub (English translated version is what 'dub' means) Maria is apparently arrested. Well, thats what some people have said anyway. IMO (In My Opinion) the dub implied it well enough that Maria was shot, and not arrested (They never explicitly said she was killed, but they never say she was arrested, just taken away. Of course, that could be a metaphor, and they showed a scene with the GUN soldier with a, duh, shotgun, and Maria...eh, I won't spoil it) So, yes, Maria died.

Its very emotional, (Though not as much as the game) and very, very good. Many scenes are very good, one in particular where Knuckles hijacks a space shuttle becuase the Master Emerald flew out the window. Strange, I know xD.

There is also a very cool battle between Sonic and Shadow as well. Very fun, so don't miss it!

So, a brief and spoiler free summary of the DVD? Sure! Why not? Sonic has been framed by a mysterious black hedgehog, and is on the run form the military. Meanwhile, this same hedgehog teams up with Dr. Omele-I mean, Eggman, and Rouge the Bat. When a dangerous space station known as the ARK prepares to fire a cannon into earth, can Sonic stop it? And what does a professor named Gerald and a girl named Maria have to do with this? Why, watch and you'll see~!

Despite the editing that the dubbers did to it, its still very, very good, but the game itsdelf is the very best. If you want the absolute ultimate SA2 experience, then just go buy the game itself.

All in all, this is a very deep story and any respectable Sonic fan should watch this DVD. And as a side note, fans of SATAM never fear, for a SATAM DVD has been released! To anyone who's missed the 'way past cool' Sonic the Hedgehog Freedom Fighter, buy that DVD as well as this one.

Oh yeah, the moon gets blown up.

It had to be a made for TV movie. NO DOUBT AT ALL. While the movie was 0K in a 70's kind of way, to much 'meat' was chopped (read the book) to be a "scary" look at 60's teenage drug use. Course I could just be old and jaded. A strange little flick from a odd little decade.

i was very disappointed with this movie, the book was so much better. it left out alot of parts, like where she was baby sitting in the end and got drugged by a 'friend'. it skipped the entire scene and went straight to the hospital, leaving you wondering what really happened. i guess if i had seen the movie first i might have liked it better though, but i recommend reading the book also

Jess was so happy with this Sonic Video and that it had so many episodes. She watches it over and over. A real Sonic fan. The video arrived in time for Xmas and securely packaged. Her grandparents are very pleased with this purchased. Amazon is the best!!

Filmed in Little Rock, Arkansas, this film is a languid telling of a Southern family's domestic travails.

All the characters appear to be enjoying themselves most of the time, except Ben Affleck and Jamie Lee Curtis. And John Prine, who seems to be enjoying himself all the time.

Prine's gravelly voice is a treat. Wait for the credits to roll and you will finally get to hear him sing ("In Spite of Ourselves"--just right for this film).

The soundtrack is stunning, especially the acoustic "Dixie," soft and reflective, strummed while Billy Bob reflects on himself.

The director's commentary is very well done, with Billy Bob Thornton adding a lot of detail and insight into how he made the film.

The only reason this DVD got a "one" was because they do not give the option of zero or negative number ratings. This is one of the worse movies I have ever attempted to see (I say "attempted" because I took it out after 20 minutes!). The language and theme is true gutter. I cannot understand anyone giving this a good review. The only thing I can imagine is they have a vested interest in the good rating ... maybe they have some to sell and write a good review just to get rid of them. Don't waste your money.

Hillbillies and their Discontents.......2006-10-15

Its a little known Billy Bob Thornton film, put out by the Weinsteins,
I assume, in their days at Miramax before Disney dumped them out of the
company. I've never heard of it. It must've went straight to video.

Billy Bob wrote and directed Daddy and them. It seems a little
autobiographical.

I'm just a little way into the movie. Laura Dern and her husband Billy
Bob are down and out and living in a little house with no money.

Billy Bob is 52 but he's playin' a guy about thirty. Laura's nearing 40
in reality, but she's playing someone who is a post-teen.

It opens with Billy Bob wearing a hat backward and chasing Laura around
the yard. But its primitiveness is what makes this movie worth talking
about.

Their dialog is so remorselessly hillbilly that I have to share. Laura
complains that Billy Bob's tattoos aren't tattoos at all but cover ups
of the names of former loves he's had that he don't want Laura to see
anymore. He replies that he wouldn't have bothered coverin' em up if
she hadn't bitched so much about them.

Which leads her to complain that he shouldn'ta f****d her sister like
that, it makes bein' married to him extra hard. To which Billy Bob
replies, "Sure I f****d your sister, but what was I supposed to do? You
was only 13 at the time and if I'da f***d you, theyda put me in the
hoosegow."

It goes on like that. I suspect the Weinstein Brothers sent this one
straight to video cause it was too embarrassing to release. I'd call
this an unintentional comedy, only I don't think it is. Billy Bob
intended for this to appear to be an unintentional comedy.

Billy Bob doesn't like her folks, including Diane Ladd, Laura's
real-life actress mother and Bruce Dern's ex-wife. The movie is one
long dysfunctional family feud. Billy Bob emphasizes family and its
discontents. Andy Griffith is O T Montgomery, Billy Bob's Daddy.

Its about family, you see, and it don't get much better than that.

It has an extraordinary cast. Jamie Lee Curtis, Brenda Blethyn, the
English Actress who played Mrs. Bennett recently in Pride & Prejudice,
and Ben Affleck.

I haven't actually finished watching the movie yet, but with its mix of
bowling alleys, liquor stores, family dinner tables and just down home
country, I just got a feelin' this one can't go bad on me.

Relate-able Dysfunction.......2005-11-19

I loved this movie! I saw John Prine in concert and he
mentioned it, or I would have never found it, nor purchased
it. It was never released at the theater, straight to
video from what I understand. Anyway, the movie is a
great story of this southern dysfunctional family. The
opening language is a little "rough" but ends up being
pretty funny. I could relate to how the family acted
with each other. "Uncle Hazel loves you, but he can't
stand a one of you!" I wish the movie would have received
more attention. It is a good story with many laughs.

The legacy of 1980's Airplane! has lasted a long, long time, as this dopey, 1996 comedy demonstrates. Physical Comedy At It's Best .......2006-07-07

This is indeed a great film for LN fans. Everything we have come to know and love about his movies are once again used in this film with laughs at almost every minute, they are non-stop. You gotta love the Weird Al opening song, that really does set the mood for the film and gives a hint of what to expect. Andy G. does a great job as the villian of the movie, it's good to know that he can poke fun at himself for the sake of the movie and it works! If you are a fan of LN and you haven't seen it yet, then you truly are missing something. If you love the Naked Gun films, then you owe it to yourself to see this!

Andy Griffith burst to stardom with this surprisingly funny film adaptation of the Broadway comedy (by, of all people, Ira Levin of Rosemary's Baby fame). Griffith plays a hillbilly who is drafted into the army where, among other things, he has to wear shoes regularly for the first time. Griffith brings an engaging glee to the role of this likable bumpkin, whose happy-go-lucky demeanor is impervious to insult. Ask him to clean the latrines and he rigs the toilet seats to stand up and salute. The film follows him through basic training and into the paratroops, where he becomes an unlikely hero. Andy Griffith an underrated actor (as another poster says)? Griffith is a total legend in his own time! This movie has some hilarious moments with Griffith largely responsible for it all though Murray Hamilton, Nick Adams, and Myron Mccormick are all good support. The scene where the latrine is rigged so the toilets salute (!) was too riske for 1958 but they got it pass censors somehow (a mystery). Lastly, a splendid bit of thanks to the now late Don Knotts for his splendid cameo as the high strung enlisted man in this film. RIP Don!

Andy Griffith a great actor........2006-03-02

Griffith is one the most underrated actors of our time. Just watch this film "No Time for Sergeants" and then "A Face in the Crowd". Few actors could pull it off. Now, when the heck does this movie come out in DVD?

Ridiculously Hilarious.......2006-01-12

This movie was introduced to me by my grandfather The Late Reverend M. C. Griffin. He sat me in the chair next to him and made my daddy go get the video out of his closet. I initially loved the movie because it created one of my favorite sounds, my Pa Pa laughing histerically. He then gave me the video and i took it home and re watched it. This movie is ridiculous hilarious. I laugh everytime i see it. This has got to be one of the funniest movies i have ever seen. And the part that seals the deal on my last sentence is the scene where Will's dad make him fetch and get that book and read to the recruiter. That is dumb funny LoL Its a golden movie to have in anyones collection. I highly recommend it to EVERYONE that loves to laugh and those that dont. It NEEEEEEEDDDSSSS to be on DVD! really soon. Thanks
