<I>The Waltons: The Complete Fifth Season</I> finds the Depression-era, Blue Ridge Mountains family a little more in touch with the outside world, largely because of the aspirations of the growing Walton children. The most dramatic example, over numerous epsiodes, results from the assertiveness of professional journalist John-Boy (Richard Thomas) as he insists on publishing national and international news in the small-circulation Blue Ridge Chronicle he writes, edits, and publishes. A lot of people in the county are mystified as to why John-Boy would want to bring Walton's Mountain closer to epochal events in Germany, or why he would choose to provide coverage of the Hindenburg zeppelin's aerial triumphs despite its link to the Nazis. Yet John-Boy is just as interested in his backyard as the world stage: In season opener "The First Edition," he stands up to strong pressure to kill a story about a judge whose drunk-driving offense causes costly property damage. In "The Fire Storm," locals are appalled when he prints excerpts from Hitler's Mein Kampf in order to make readers aware of what kind of madman the German chancellor is.
While John-Boy stands up to popular opinion, brother Jason (Jon Walmsley), a talented musician, has to take a job playing piano at a roadhouse to make up for the loss of his college scholarship. The decision doesn't go down too well with the Walton women, but Jason's presence at the Dew Drop Inn allows for some interesting scenes over the course of the season, none more so than the unexpected visit of a fire-and-brimstone evangelist in "The Baptism." In that same show, father John Walton, played by Ralph Waite, notorious in his Christian community for eschewing church services, faces renewed pressure from wife Olivia (Michael Learned) to accept her faith, making for one of the most interesting episodes of the season. Meanwhile, John-Boy's sister, Mary Ellen (Judy Norton), is wooed by a couple of different men and hears wedding bells with one of them. She also pursues her nursing degree and misdiagnoses an ailment of Grandma Esther (Ellen Corby), resulting in long-term hospitalization and no end of grief for Grandpa Zeb (Will Geer). The other, increasingly restless Walton boys and girls grab their share of the spotlight, too, but <I>The Complete Fifth Season</I> is, once again, John-Boy's year, capped by dramatic developments in his career and vision of himself. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Description

And, in a story filled with surprises and a ceremony filled with beauty, Mary Ellen becomes the first Walton child to marry. More adventures await, including Jason's job in a honkytonk, Grandma's set-to with the minister, and an exciting, heartwarming Christmas episode that's sure to become a holiday favorite with your family. And along the way old friends return, new friends arrive and the family bedrock of love endures in this 5-Disc, 24-Episode Season-5 Set of one of television's most enduring series.
Customer Reviews:
old time beauty salon.......2007-06-17
As I am trying to recreate a 1930's beauty salon, I found that the episode, The Rebellion, was right on target. Not only is the beauty salon seemingly authentic, so is the perm machine that is being used. Steam was shown rising from the head! Seeing this helped me understand what I should see with my own perm machine for my videos. For those intrigued by beauty salons of days past, I highly recommend the 5th season of the Waltons, even just for this one episode!
Classic Waltons.......2007-06-17
The 5th season is the last with the full cast and it is very good. We are already about 12 episodes in and there have been many changes during that time. For one the kids all seem to be growing up rapidly and there has already been a marriage this season. It's a great joy to be able to view these again as the last time I saw them was with my grandparents when they were originally aired on TV. The Waltons is still one of the best shows ever to grace the TV screen. What can I say if you like The Waltons then go get it now; you won't be sorry.
GREAT DVD's set........2007-06-11
These are a great purchase for someone who was a Waltons fan. And even if you weren't it is a great addition to your DVD collection and very good for your children to watch.
Outstanding as Usual.......2007-06-11
I love the Walton's. This creates a large amount of bias to my review. The Pony Cart is a don't miss episode which teaches us the importance of respecting our elders and their legacy. Looking forward to the rest of the series as they come available.
Great DVD.......2007-06-11
I am so glad they come out with this season. I love the show where MaryEllen gets married. I can not wit for the one where she has the baby.

Just the right amount of drama for your money!.......2007-06-17
This show just keeps getting better and better as the seasons are released. It starts getting into more detail about the personal lives of the doctors and nurses. This season is the season that starts the development of Dr. Greene's brain tumor. I can't wait until season 8 is released. This is real drama!
Good season.......2007-05-26
There is no doubt why ER has been on so long. Not my favorite season on dvd but good nonetheless.

The exceptionally fine cast--Susan Sarandon, Tommy Lee Jones, J.T. Walsh, Mary-Louise Parker, Anthony Edwards, William H. Macy, Anthony LaPaglia, Ossie Davis, and Brad Renfro--goes a long way toward making The Client one of the more solidly enjoyable screen adaptations of a John Grisham southern gothic legal thriller. Teen-hearthrob Renfro is a natural, playing a kid whose life is in jeopardy after he witnesses the death of a Mob lawyer. Susan Sarandon is the attorney who decides to look after the boy; nobody can match her when it comes to playing strong and protective maternal figures (Thelma and Louise, Lorenzo's Oil, Dead Man Walking). Sarandon won her fourth Oscar nomination as best actress for this role, before finally winning the following year for Dead Man Walking. Author Grisham was so impressed with former window dresser/fashion designer/screenwriter-turned-director Joel Schumacher's work on this movie that he later asked him to direct A Time to Kill. --Jim Emerson
Description
Settle in. Take a deep breath. Hold tight. The best screen version yet of a novel by John Grisham (The Firm, The Pelican Brief) delivers all-out, moment-by-moment suspense! Headliners Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones join newcomer Brad Renfro in The Client, a whirlwind thriller that "starts like a house afire and keeps on blazing" (Chicago Tribune). Renfro plays Mark Sway, an 11-year-old torn between what he knows and what he can never tell. A hitman will snuff him in half a heartbeat if Mark reveals what he learned about a Mob murder. An ambitious federal prosecutor (Jones) will keep the pressure on until Mark tells all. Suddenly, Mark isn't a boy playing air guitar anymore. He's a pawn in a deadly game. And his only ally is a courageous but unseasoned attorney (Sarandon) who risks her career for him...but never imagines she'll also risk her life.
Customer Reviews:
Not wonderful.......2007-06-14
The Client was a disappointment.
I thought the book was very good and some of the characters in the book were outstanding. The movie was not coherent and certainly not at the level of the book.
The Client.......2007-01-29
Sarandon is always good but if you like Tommy Lee Jones you will love it.
Good movie, however, we have the positives and the negatives........2006-10-07
Plot: A mafia lawyer commits suicide. But before he does, he forces 11-year old Mark Sway (Who lives with his brother and mother in a trailer park) into the car. And so he tells Mark secrets about where Loisianna Senator Boyd Boyette was buried. Since Mark's little brother has a stress syndrome (he can't see anything scary), Randy Sway had to go to the hospital. Ever since his father was divorced, he tends to believe that lawyers are morons (at times, they can get in the way) and gets his info about courts and judges on T.V. Mark meets Reggie Love, a woman lawyer who used to have a drinking problem; at first, he doesn't trust her. After many pelts by F.B.I, mafia, and annoying reporters (already sick of Elvis sightings), Mark has to trust her.
Positives: Mark is told by Reggie that he can't lie, or he'll be just like them (mafia). As such, the mafia in this movie are seen as a bunch of criminals. Even though Mark was threatened by a very nasty mafia "dude", he tries to tell the truth, he didn't tell about where Boyd was buried. Many scriptures from the bible are written in cells and there is a picture of Jesus in the hospital. Though Mark can be a pest at times, Reggie tries to help him because she cares about him.
Negatives: For those people who don't like cursing, there is a moderate amount of cussing in the film. 1/3 of them comes from Mark Sway's mouth, which disturbed me a bit. Mark also gives a mafia guy the middle finger secretly. Mark disobeys his mother by going in the woods and therefore, getting mixed up with all this. Mark got his info about an affair like this on T.V, and he claims that he saw a guy having his legs blown off because of the witness protection program (on T.V, though this isn't shown). Due to medication, Mark's mother fights the F.B.I at one point, though you have to watch to find out.
Funnies: In the hospital, "Elvis" complains about his guitar. The way Reggie deals with Mark at times can be humorous.
Conclusion: If you can take the negatives, then I highly recommend this movie. Though, I'd like to say that you shouldn't buy "The Client" To anybody younger than thirteen because even though violence is rarely seen.
mostly good, some flubs.......2006-06-02
The movie started out nice and exciting, then, unfortunately, every few scenes would have a slip in reality that makes you say "oops".
Here are just a few:
1. Boy does not actually see a man die, but is traumatized nevertheless (for the balance of the movie).
2. Person shoots a lock open with gun (just like in the movies), though it never happens in real life.
3. In a closed dark boathouse, there are the convenient reflections of light on the water to illuminate everything we need to see.
4. At least one, if not two, people should have fired or not fired their gun (I don't want to spoil it). Instead, we get the usual Hollywood "talk-down"... (oops, I spoiled it).
5. In one scene, the police supposedly have cordoned off a parking lot to try to locate someone, yet there are many pedestrians, and in fact it is the important escape scene in a car that just drives through among the cop cars.
Apart from those and other similar gaffes, it was a well-made movie with a long list of notable actors. I enjoyed some supporting characters (Anthony LaPaglia, JT Walsh) more than the top 3 leads, however.
The DVD has some skimpy text-based extras about cast/crew, a few boring paragraphs of "behind the scenes", a bit of text about casting Brad Refro, and some "reel recommendations" that show the cover of some related DVDs.
If you are not picky about "reality points" you can easily add another star.
Action thriller with emotion........2006-05-23
A mixture of well-developed characters, seemingly inescapable situations, mystery, thrilling action and truly scary moments make this film a solid piece of work. The seasoned and talented cast add the spice that makes this a tasty thriller for any fan of the cinema. Emotion spills effortlessly into every corner of the film, spreading 'human' moments everywhere. There's never a dull moment.

Amazon.com essential video
Jingoism, beefcake, military hardware, and a Giorgio Moroder rock score reign supreme over taste and logic in this Tony Scott film about a maverick trainee pilot (Tom Cruise) who can't follow the rules at a Navy aviation training facility. The dogfight sequences between American and Soviet jets at the end are absolutely mechanical, though audiences loved it at the time. The love story between Cruise's character and that of Kelly McGillis is like flipping through pages of advertising in a glossy magazine. This designer action movie from 1986 would be all the more appalling were it not for the canny casting of good actors in dumb parts. Standouts include Anthony Edwards--who makes a nice impression as Cruise's average-Joe pal--and the relatively unknown Meg Ryan in a small but memorable appearance. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Description
In TOP GUN, Tom Cruise stars as Maverick, a talented training pilot in an elite U.S. school for fighter pilots. When he stumbles upon some MiG's over the Persian Gulf, and his wingman panics, Maverick cleverly talks him through the situation to safety. Consequently, he is moved up in rank and sent to the Top Gun Naval Flying School. There he has several conflicts with other students while trying to live up to his deceased father's reputation. Unable to cope with the death of his best friend, and fellow pilot, Goose, Maverick contemplates dropping out, but follows through with his dream and ultimately becomes one of the "best of the best."

Top Gun Fun.......2007-06-15
With my new home theater sound system it sounds like your sitting at the end of the aircraft carrier when they take off! Awesome.
best opening 3 minutes of a movie ever...and then just good fun.......2007-05-26
this is a movie to leave feeling good, patriotic if you're an American, proud if you simply like the feeling of understanding a small portion of what it means to defend good.
Its irrational, illogical, and sometimes silly.
But it is exceptionally well shot, the characters although thinly developed are great to look at, the music is perfect for this venue, and as stated in the title, the first 3 or so minutes on the deck of the "Big E" (this was shot on the carrier Enterprise) are some of the best ever, matching emotion, cinematography, music, and story in a way that simply makes you want to watch the rest of it no matter what.
Get a soda or a beer, some popcorn, and prepare to smile. Or maybe even cheer.
THE BEST MOVIE CRAZY TOM EVER MADE.......2007-04-30
THIS IS A FANTASTIC MOVE IF YOU ENJOY ADVENTURE AND GREAT SPECIAL EFFECTS
REMEMBER THE GOOD OLD DAYS , WHEN GOOD OLD TOM WAS NORMAL????

GILTED PLEASURE [TOP GROAN].......2007-04-18
Oh yeah; the jets roar, the top gun aces sass and swagger and the script trips and plops out such memorable quoters as: "you can be my wing man anytime" . . . (right up there with Kirk Douglas's Spartacus snarling at Crassus' legions: "they can't stop men who wan't to be free", etc.); well, news is, they can stop men who want to be free; they can do that by casting Kelly McGillis up against the very short Tom Cruise (Maverick); they can hope for something like charisma, sexual tension, animal magnetism or just good ole fashion' lust on the tarmac; but, no dice; it just don't happen; the best (and only) love affair in this hot-to-be-liked Tony Scott film is that between tiny Tom and Anthony Edwards (E.R.'s favorite bald surgeon); oh, yeah -- those two bohunks click; as does Val Kilmer's Iceman -- the nerves of steel by the books hot shot who will probably wind up marrying Ollie North's daughter and running for Congress (note: please, do not let me see him wearing towel only ever again -- his is a torso only Ben Kingsley in Gandhi outdoes); but back to Top Gun; yes, that's Meg Ryan as Anthony Edwards' wife/widow; it is one of her best parts; you can almost like her; Tom Skerritt, who is never forgettable in any part, looks as if he wishes his mustache were on Tom Cruise (who, if he had a mustache, might look old enough to sign up for his own paper route); Michael Ironside doesn't know if Cruise/Maverick will ever shape into the ace of aces we all know he has to become if the film is to end; and end it does; all is well in the azure skies of freedom and at Top Gun school in Miramar, CA; the juke box plays "You've Lost That Lovin Feelin'" as Kelly and Tom reunite; I hope they don't have kids; or, if they do, the kids avoid this movie; just kidding; there are great aerial scenes and then there are great landing and take-off scenes; I like the jet trails too; and the overplayed Berlin song, "Take My Breath Away", which should have been bought up by Certs or Listerine or a Mexican Restaurant chain; oh well, there is no irony in popular movies any more; wait for the trading cards.

<I>The Waltons: The Complete Fourth Season</I> finds life on Walton's Mountain changing in some significant ways. The first episode, "The Sermon," sets the tone with a story in which oldest son John-Boy Walton (Richard Thomas) is asked by the local preacher (John Ritter) to substitute for him at one Sunday service. Meanwhile, John-Boy's mother, Olivia (Michael Learned), is asked by the local schoolteacher to fill in for her for a week. Each of these Waltons has doubts that they're up to the task (Olivia has an especially hard time, since her charges include several of her own children). But they persevere, and Olivia finds herself teaching on and off throughout the season. Meanwhile, patriarch John (Ralph Waite) has a midlife crisis that causes him to leave home for a stretch, a cousin of Olivia's comes to grieve the death of her husband, the family closely follows the abdication of King Edward from the throne in England, and musician Jason Walton (Jon Walmsley) has a crisis of confidence as a performer. Special episodes include "The Fighter," starring Cleavon Little as a boxer who takes a paying job working for the Waltons, and whose presence upsets Olivia and Grandma (Ellen Corby). "The Genius" finds John-Boy being asked by his school to supervise a brilliant but socially cold 16-year-old who has to learn a lot about life. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Description
It's 1936: Hitler and Mussolini threaten the world, King Edward gives up the English throne for love, Gangbusters is on the radio, a movie crew hires John-Boy as a scriptwriter, Mary Ellen applies to nursing school, Jim-Bob discovers a shocking fact about his birth and a fire drives the Waltons from their home. Events large and small, far off and near touch the lives of all 11 Waltons, from Grandpa down to little Elizabeth. They bring tests, tears and triumphs...and bring the closely knit Waltons even closer together.

Waltons 4th season.......2007-05-13
As far as the Waltons it was good, but the first disk had 1,2,3 on both sides, and the quality was a little lacking
The Waltons Season Four was Great!.......2007-05-12
This season of our favorite Great Depression family, the Waltons, was one of the best in the whole entire series. Changes in the normal life of everyone increase more and more. New people come and old kin visit. John-boy takes on a challenge in the latter part of the series that will leave Walton's Mountain a beacon calling "Home,, Sweeet, Home!"
Waltons 4th season.......2007-05-09
I enjoy these types of family movies. I especially enjoy the continuing story as the children grow up. I also watched all 9 seasons of Little House On The Prairie. That one was my favorite. I wish the children of today has just 1/2 of the values they did back then.
Great Family Show But Poor Transfer Quality & No Extras.........2007-04-26
Now don't get the wrong impression of my rating because this is an excellent family show and it gets 5 stars it that area, but the 2 rating is my opinion of the poor way that this quality show was put on DVD.. First i noticed that this is a bare bones transfer with no extras but you would think since we are paying good money for these dvds that they would at least make sure the trasnfer quality from film to dvd is excellent, but sadly its not, it seems like there was not much care taken in the transfer process. Let me explain, during the opening music i noticed that it fades in and out something that i did not notice in the previous 3 seasons. Also on a few episodes i just watched, it appears like there was little cleaning up of the film done before transfer to get rid of all the spots or floaters that sometimes appear on older films, it would have been nice if the time was taken to remaster the film for good dvd viewing. It also would have been nice to include a closed caption feature for the hearing impaired for those who need it. In closing i really enjoy watching the Waltons and I am very pleased to have it on DVD, but if a little more care and extra work was put into the transfer process this could be so much better and i would feel i am getting the most for my money spent...
GREAT SHOW BARE BONES RELEASE IS A BUMMER.......2007-04-18
Another great season! I wish someone would get some kind of behind the scenes info for some bonus material for these releases. Season 5 the last great season is coming out soon. After John Boy's departure and the loss of Grampa the series goes down hill fast!

<I>The Waltons</I>' nearly 10-year run on network television grew out of the popular, 1971 made-for-TV movie <I>The Homecoming</I>, which was derived from a Depression-era, rustic setting ("Walton's Mountain"), and characters based on Earl Hamner Jr.'s autobiographical novel <I>Spencer's Mountain</I>--itself the source for a very nice 1963 feature film starring Henry Fonda and Maureen O'Hara. That's a lot of entertainment sprouting from Hamner's prose. But something about his seminal story of family values, rugged independence, and big dreams amidst a hardscrabble existence captured the hearts of American audiences, many of whom personally recalled severe economic adversity in the 1930s.
<I>The Waltons: The Complete First Season</I> collects those initial episodes from the series building on the strengths of the <I>Homecoming</I> pilot, which introduced the extended Walton clan led by a strong-willed mill owner, John (Andrew Duggan), and his equally resolute wife, Olivia (Patricia Neal). <I>The Waltons</I> recast those key roles (as well as a few others) with Ralph Waite and Michael Learned (yup, a female), but Richard Thomas carried over as oldest child John-Boy Walton, an aspiring writer whose cusp-of-manhood view informs the series. Will Geer (<I>Seconds</I>) replaced Edgar Bergen as Grandpa Walton, Ellen Corby remained as Grandma, and John and Olivia's large brood (seven kids in all) were filled out by largely unknown, young actors. The episodes, still delightful and touching, strong on production values and unusually tight and polished for primetime drama, tended to focus on creator Hamner's pet themes of self-sacrifice and heroic effort when the going got tough.
Year 1 highlights include "The Carnival," in which the impoverished Waltons, who can't pay for tickets to see a circus performance, end up sheltering stranded carney folk. "The Typewriter" is a classic about John-Boy "borrowing" a museum's antique typewriter, only to have his sister Mary Ellen (Judy Norton) sell it as junk. "The Sinner" concerns the arrival of a fundamentalist minister on Walton's Mountain, finding comfort in the words of religious iconoclast John Walton after the clergyman makes a fool of himself with moonshine. That's Hamner himself providing touches of narration. During the long run of the multiple-award-winning <I>The Waltons</I>, there were many changes in casting and storylines. But this boxed set reveals a fine series in its pristine state. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

great series .......2007-05-07
THERE SO MUCH TO BE SAID ABOUT THE WALTONS ALL THERE HARDSHIPS AND THERE DAILY LIFE FROM CHILDHOOD TO ADULTS I HAVE SEASONS ONE THROUGH FOUR AND WILL CONTINUE TO PURCHASE THEM UNTIL I HAVE THEM ALL IF YOU LIKE THE TV SERIES DO NOT PASS THEM UP YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED
A strong family drama, well worth watching..........2007-03-24
With 21st century eyes, it's wonderful to see a family like the Waltons. Although they are scrabbling against poverty, living in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia during the Depression, they are happy. The large family, which includes seven children, parents, and grandparents, is loving and supportive. Sure, the kids aren't angels -- like any others, they squabble and have their problems. But when push comes to shove, they've got one another's backs, like when eldest sister Mary Ellen beats up a classmate for mocking little brother Jim Bob's shirt (made from sister Erin's old dress) or when eldest brother John-Boy defends Mary Ellen from a potential assault by a guest staying with the family.
Most gratifying is the children's overall contentment. Sure, they aspire for "things" - they long to see a traveling circus that comes to the mountains, and they pause by toys displayed in the general store. But for the most part, they don't dwell upon what they don't have. They take contentment in life in general, and when the occasional treat comes their way, they truly appreciate it...unlike many kids today, whose parents buy them the latest iPods and video games, and it's STILL not enough.
The Waltons' saga is told through the eyes of eldest son John-Boy, who is 17 and aspires to be a writer. He is based on Earl Hamner, a Virginia native who wrote "Spencer's Mountain," the book upon which the show is based. Hamner does a voiceover in each episode, speaking as the adult John-Boy looking back on his childhood.
(For the record, I'm 26 years old, not someone who grew up with this show, or looks down upon "today's youth" from the vantage of age. But, as you know, not all young folks are content with the attitudes of today's society as a rule. I, for one, truly wish we could return to a simpler time; it won't be long before our complicated lives lead us to self-destruct.)
GREAT SHOW...BUT WHERE ARE THE EXTRAS?.......2007-03-13
The Waltons is a show that I never ever watched as a kid. It just wasn't something I thought I would like. I found these shows on TV in the early 90'. I was very surprised how quickly I became a fan! I really only like the the first 5 years, but it is a great show and I have bought the seasons as the are released. I just wish there were some sort of bonus material.:-(
I LOVE the WALTONS!!!.......2007-03-11
The Waltons are a wonderful, inspirational, fun, heartwarming, feel good shows...we still watch the re-runs, but that isn't enough, so the DVD is great! They are truly a great American family who have much faith in God and love each other with unending love! What else can be said? I feel they are a part of MY family!
A classic that never tires....
The Best Family Show to Hit The Air waves In Its Time.......2007-03-03
The year was 1972 when this show hit the airwave on CBS September 14 as a weekly series. The Waltons was based on a large close-knit family living in rural Virginia during the Depression. The Creator Earl Hamner Jr. based the series on his own childhood, which he previously fictionalized in his novel, "Spencer's Mountain". The Waltons debuted on with Richard Thomas playing the role of John Boy Walton. In the Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia, during the Great Depression, the Walton family makes its small income from its saw mill on Walton's Mountain. The story is told through the eyes of John Boy, who wants to be a novelist, goes to college, and eventually fulfills his dream. The saga follows the family through depression and war, and through growing up, school, courtship, marriage, employment, birth, aging, illness and death. This is the true story of the Waltons. The show takes place during the Depression and then during World War II. The other case members were as followed Ralph Waite played the role of John Walton Sr. Michael Learned played the role Oliva Walton, Judy Norton Taylor played the role of Marry Ellen, Jon Walmsley played the role of Jason Walton, Mary Beth McDonough played the role of Erin Walton, Eric Scott played the role of Ben Walton, David Harper played the role of Jim Bob Walton, Kami Cotler played the role of Elizabeth Walton, Will Greer played the role Grandpa and Ellen Corby played the role of Grandma. Other original characters included Joe Conley as general store owner, Ike Godsey, John Crawford as Sheriff Ep Bridges, Mariclare Costello as schoolteacher Miss Rosemary Hunter and Helen Kleeb and Mary Jackson as eccentric sisters-- Mamie and Emily Baldwin, respectively. The Waltons' first season brought critical acclaim and several awards. Both Richard Thomas and Michael Learned took home Best Actor Emmys, Ellen Corby was awarded the Best Supporting Actress honor and the series was given the Emmy for Outstanding Drama Series. The show also earned Emmys for writing and editing in addition to receiving the prestigious Peabody award. The series entered the top-ten in its second season and finished second that year to All in the Family. The show remained in the top twenty for the next few seasons and received several more Emmys, including two more for both Michael Learned and Ellen Corby and a Best Supporting Actor award for Will Geer. In all, The Waltons received 37 Emmy nominations and took home 13 of the golden statuettes. Three reunion movies have been produced in the 1990s for CBS. "A Walton Thanksgiving Reunion" (1993), "A Walton Wedding" (1995) and "A Walton Easter" (1997) all feature the original cast with the exception of the late Will Geer. The series opened in the fall of September 1972 with the first episode titled The Foundling. A six-year old deaf and dumb girl is abandoned on the Walton's doorstep. With loving care they teach her to "talk" with sign language. But their kindness to the foundling causes a family crisis. Elizabeth, playing hide-and-seek with the deaf and dumb girl Holly, runs into an old abandoned shack and hides inside an empty trunk, but the lid falls shut and locks itself. Holly sees what has happened and runs to get help but is picked up by her father who doesn't understand sign language and takes her away. John and the family pursue and Holly then tells them by sign language what has occurred, and Elizabeth is rescued in time. Holly's parents now realize that their little girl is not retarded and are now able to communicate with her.

Year two of Earl Hamner's <I>The Waltons</I> still finds the original cast complete and the show humming along nicely on nostalgia for an earlier America, specifically the Depression-era 1930s, a time of sacrifice and family unity as <I>The Waltons</I> portrays it. The characters we came to know so well in season one (see <I>The Waltons: The Complete First Season</I>) continue to live in a spirit of cooperation and generosity, and with hope that a younger generation of Waltons will prosper and dream new dreams for everyone.
The 24 episodes included in this box set feature a number of very strong stories, including a handful of classics, all immersed in the series' typically old-Hollywood production values. (Several season two shows were directed by <I>Waltons</I>' star Ralph Waite.) Among the best is the premiere, "The Journey," in which the ever-noble, college-bound John-Boy (Richard Thomas) passes on a school dance and an important date to take an aging neighbor, Maggie Mackenzie (Linda Watkins), on a special, final journey. "The Separation" finds Grandpa (Will Geer) and Grandma (Ellen Corby) Walton feudingeven living apart--after the former crafts a secret plan to raise money to pay the family's electricity bill. (Their reconciliation is one of the series' most enjoyable and tender moments.) The memorable "The Thanksgiving Story" is a nail-biter in which John-Boy, facing a hopeful future as he awaits college and a visit from his girlfriend, endures a head injury in the family mill and must undergo surgery. Finally, "The Honeymoon" sees John (Waite) and Olivia (Michael Learned) finally taking their honeymoon after 19 years of marriage and seven kids. Throughout all the major storylines is a constant buzz of subplots concerning John-Boy's younger siblingstheir joys and disappointments, first loves, accomplishments and relationships with one another. <I>The Waltons</I> never slows down, but it is capable of revealing the most delicate of feelings within shared or private moments. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

LACK OF BONUS MATERIAL KEEPS ME FROM RATING THIS GREAT SHOW 5 STARS.......2007-03-13
This show is great, but with most of cast still alive its a shame they can't get some of them together for some inside information and other bonus material for these season sets. One of the best seasons though.
No English Subtitles, FRENCH ONLY! DUH!! .......2007-02-04
In what must have been a production error? or just flat idiots that run the show making dvds, ( seems to be common on way to many dvd's )
the subtitles are in French only. There are no English subtitles.
Obviously someone at Warners Home Video has made a bad mistake in production. This makes it difficult for any elderly viewers or hard of hearing that might want to watch this show. ( um hey, guess what, they have money to spend, too! ) Are you HEARING that?
Subtitles are supposed to be standard on all DVD box sets and I note that overseas versions of The Waltons have corrected this mistake(just not the American version).
This is getting to be old hat by now. I have some dvd's that are 10 years old that are CC. just flat lazy and ignorant decisions.
The Deaf and hard of hearing are the last "group" in the USA to still be looking for they're rights. Everyone else has recieved them in the last 50 years. How long is this going to go on??
Socialist France gets to watch and understand the great show, but not those in our own country. amazing
No Good Night John Boy in this house.
Simply the Best.......2007-01-15
I grew up watching the Waltons. After the second season, they became like good friends I enjoyed being with week after week. Though I always found Richard Thomas (John-Boy) a bit "actor-ish" in his role, the series always hung on the excellent performances of Ralph Waite and Miss Michael Learned, (Did she ever get married, I wonder?) as well as the rest of the excellent cast.
The strength of the show is the great writing and the excellent relationships the characters had with each other. Things rarely got bored, tedious, or drawn-out, even though the material covered a lot of topics. Things always seemed very interesting around Walton's mountain.
I really identified with the people on this show. They were wholesome and believable in an entirely different way than on shows like Father Knows Best. Because the episodes are set in the 30's and 40's, they never go out of style. I guarantee you'll enjoy watching them every bit as much today as when they were first produced over 30 years ago, (and that's hard to believe.)
The Waltons DVD Second Season Set.......2007-01-11
Item delivered promptly and in excellent condition. I appreciated the low shipping fee. Transaction went smoothly. No complaints. I would make future similar puchases.
A great classic .......2007-01-09
When I was a little girl, I watched re-runs of the Waltons every weekday with my entire family. It is a heart warming story perfect for all ages. Within the last five years, it was pulled from primetime tv, and now is only aired very early in the mornings. Because of this I was only able to watch it on rare occasion and almost never with my mother, who loves the show. So this purchase, as well as my puchase of Season 1, has allowed my mother and I to watch our favorite, the Waltons, again whenever we are together.

In need of some good old-fashioned gore? You'll find it by the bucketload in the low-budget monsterfest Feast, which arrives on DVD in an even bloodier unrated edition. The winning entry in the third season of Ben Affleck and Matt Damon's reality series/talent contest Project Greenlight (Wes Craven is also on board as an advisor/producer), Feast is a wall-to-wall splatterthon that operates on an agreeably simple premise: A crew of motley characters is trapped in a remote location (in this case, a desert bar) by ravenous, flesh-eating monsters (here, a quartet of toothy and astoundingly fecund humanoids). The result? Lots of gruesome deaths and plenty of manic action, delivered with kinetic style by first-time feature director John Gulager. Not everything about Feast works--Gulager's drive is thwarted by the unfocused script, which favors smarmy dialogue over substance--but the effects are impressive, given the film's price tag, and the cast is incredibly game for the gory goings-on, with Krista Allen (Entourage), Judah Friedlander (30 Rock), Balthazar Getty (Alias), and Gulager's father, veteran actor Clu Gulager, among the stand-outs. The DVD includes a smattering of outtakes and deleted scenes (including an alternate ending); commentary by Gulager, the screenwriters, and two of the film's numerous producers; and a making-of featurette, which Project Greenlight viewers should find interesting solely for producers Chris Moore and Michael Leahy's attitudes towards Gulager (both were a hair's breath away from firing him throughout the production, but here, amusingly suggest unconditional support). -- Paul Gaita

good fast pasced fun, .......2007-06-18
This one didnt spend much time on the big screen but is a great one for your collection.. gets off to a fast start, similar to Dusk till Dawn, but more realistic..set in a bar, you never get tired of being there due to good acting and quick witted dialog.
Great B Horror flick.......2007-06-17
This horror film has both the "scarey" and the "humorous" mixed all into one. What I found most funny is the monster's babies mate and then they eat what they have mated with. I just about fell off my chair laughing at this one. It also has a very scarey side and the feeling of being "trapped" in this film. Yes, there is alot of gore, the monsters look very good and the acting was excellent for this B horror flick. I recommend anyone that loves horror movies with a little humor.
Wow, pretty damn good!.......2007-06-12
Funny, gorey as hell with beautiful women and non stop action! Worth the buy, difinetly one to see again.
Underrated horror movie.......2007-05-23
I was pleasantly surprised by "Feast." After seeing a few episodes of "Project Greenlight," I expected this movie to be a mess. But it succeeds as an enthusiastic horror movie despite (or perhaps because of) the severe lack of money and time available, and the constant presence of "Project Greenlight" camera crews. Gulager put together a product that is definitely a B movie, but one that's head and shoulders above much higher-budgeted studio horror fare. It helps that the script, while imperfect, has some great moments, and that the actors are generally at least competent.
One real virtue of "Feast" is that it just keeps moving. At 85 minutes, you don't have time to stop and think about the plot holes too much. It's a rocket on rails from start to finish. One way "Feast" keeps moving is the unique way in which we "meet the meat." Some viewers will hate it. I liked it, myself; but that's purely a matter of taste. The first few minutes are entertaining and get a lot of the exposition out of the way fast.
"Feast" is at least worth a rent by horror fans.
A Horror Extravaganza.......2007-05-23
This is a pretty good movie, it has some pretty good special effects and is pretty gresome. It's a must see.

<I>Hoodwinked</I> fuses the classic fairy tale of <I>Little Red Riding Hood</I> with the crisscrossing storylines of <I>film noir</I>--pretty ambitious stuff for a computer-animated cartoon. The police cordon off Grandma's cottage and an amphibious version of William Powell named Nicky Flippers (voiced by David Ogden Stiers, <I>M*A*S*H</I>) begins interrogating the suspects: A Little Red in bell-bottoms (Anne Hathaway, <I>Ella Enchanted</I>), a Wolf turned investigative journalist (Patrick Warburton, <I>The Woman Chaser</I>), a snow-boarding Granny (Glenn Close, <I>101 Dalmatians</I>), and a dimwitted would-be Woodsman (Jim Belushi, <I>Curly Sue</I>), each of whom have very different reasons for ending up in that cottage living room. The visual style of <I>Hoodwinked</I> mixes a clunky, video-game look with an homage to the stop-motion puppetry of <I>Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer</I> and other Rankin-Bass holiday specials. While sometimes awkward, there are also moments of surreal beauty, such as when a depressed Red wanders through a field of blue and red flowers--and moments of lunatic comedy, such as the Schnitzel song, which is irresistibly bizarre. The <I>Shrek</I>-style pop-culture references grow annoying, but the left-field goofiness of a yodeling goat points toward a far more distinct and delightful comic world. Also featuring the voices of Anthony Anderson (<I>Kangaroo Jack</I>), rapper Xzibit, and an especially witty turn by Andy Dick (<I>NewsRadio</I>) as a deceptively cute bunny rabbit. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>
Description
So you think you know the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Don't be too sure. . . . One of your favorite fairy tales is turned upside-down and inside-out in what the L.A. Times called "high-energy, imaginative entertainment." With irreverent storytelling, spunk and wit, Hoodwinked delivers a comedy caper for the young, the young at heart and everyone in between. When the police arrive at Granny's cottage in the woods to answer a domestic disturbance call, it looks like just another open-and-shut case. But Red, Granny, the Big Bad Wolf and the Woodsman are not your usual suspects, as they have their own dark secrets, wily deceptions and conflicting accounts of the crime. Together, they must put aside their differences and find their own original twist on Happily Ever After in this "raucous, genre-busting, animated gem (Entertainment Weekly, The Must List)."
Customer Reviews:
Wow- this was a BORING, uninteresting stinker..........2007-06-19
...and it looked good from the trailers. So I finally rented it. Watched the first 30 minutes and found it too ANNOYING for some reason & just hard to keep any interest in. So I stopped it & did other stuff. The next day, my cousin says, come over and we'll watch a movie. I said I had Hoodwinked and she said to bring it over because she wanted to see it. Again, after 30-40 minutes, we both looked at each other and stopped it. We both agreed it was annoying, uninteresting and definately NOT funny. If you want to laugh, then just rent Fletch.
BTW- LOOK BEYOND THE GLOATING REVIEWS OF THIS DVD AND AT ALL THE 1 STAR REVIEWS IT RECEIVED.
Wonderful film; innovative, fresh, clever, well written/animated/voiced.......2007-05-27
Super job on this film - congrats to the writers, producer, director and actors on it. One of the better of it's genre I've seen in recent years. Much better than most. Clever writing, wonderful voice acting, great comedic delivery, timing, and superb plot twists.
This was one of the best animated features I've seen (and I've seen almost all of them). Great to watch w/family, very fast paced, witty and well done. Bravo, gang! Cheers for a wonderfully produced family film. A+++
Regards,
Ken Calhoun
Witty! Clever! We watch it all the time........2007-05-25
I love this movie. My son has a bunch of kids movies, and when he wants to watch one together this is always the one I want to put in.
It's got grown up humor, but not "adult" humor, so you don't have to worry about your kid repeating something awful. I hear a new one-liner or witty remark every time I watch it. Without exception I laugh out loud when we watch it. It's got quick, humorous dialoge, and good music (catch myself singing little snippits of tunes around the house). All this and my kid (5 when we got it, 6 now) thinks it's hilarious, too.
Most of the characters are really likable and well done. There is one character I wish they'd have cast with a different voice, and Little Red Riding Hood could have been designed a little cuter or softer, but the movie's good features make up for the little shortcomings.
Really funny. Can't decide which character I like best -- probably the wolf, but the goat's pretty darn funny, too.
WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST MOVE.......2007-05-08
WOW DANG ONE OF THE BEST MOVE I HAVE EVER SEEN & FOR BEING ANATMAED IT IS UN-BLEAVABLE IN SO MEAN WAYS
Maybe even more fun for parents.......2007-03-27
As have many parents, I've watched hundreds of kid's films. Many are insufferable to sit through. This is so fun, so fast-paced, so laden with plot twists and colorful characters and quotable lines and NO scary stuff or sex jokes... it's a rare treat for children and adults alike. I consider Hoodwinked simply the best animated feature of the past ten years.

<I>The Waltons: The Complete Third Season</I> finds series creator Earl Hamner's running story about the proud, Depression-era family living and working on Walton's Mountain going through some changes. The big news is that oldest son John-Boy (Richard Thomas) is now a freshman at Boatwright University, pursuing his dream of becoming a writer but encountering a lot of tough challenges and distractions. Still living at home but driving to classes every day, John-Boy gets an unpleasant taste of hazing from arrogant upperclassmen, grief from impatient professors, insecurity in a competitive writing class, and an ever-broadening sense of how the other half lives through exotic, quirky, yet sometimes sweet and attractive young women he meets on campus.
Meanwhile, John-Boy's father, John Walton (Ralph Waite), nurses a dream of opening a father-and-son-operated lumber mill, knowing full well that the very busy John-Boy can't do much without sacrificing his education. (John also discovers next-in-line son Jason (Jon Walmsley) is already dreaming about his own career beyond the mountain.) Walton mom Olivia (Michael Learned) looks wistful over the speed with which her children are growing up, and Grandpa (Will Geer) tries to do his part for the family's well-being within the limits of his age and rocky health. <I>The Complete Third Season</I> starts powerfully with a story about Walton kin, living elsewhere on the mountain, who refuse to leave their generations-long home in an eminent domain struggle with the government. Glimpses of the world Grandpa grew up in--full of moonshine, guns, and hardheaded men and women--abound in this fascinating episode. Other dramas concern heart problems for Grandpa; a runaway crisis when Jim-Bob (David W. Harper) bolts from home; a proper (and long-delayed) wedding for formerly eloped couple John and Olivia; a horse race that's supposed to be fun but takes on greater dimension; and troubles for John-Boy with a femme fatale and Boatwright's flawed honor code. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Description
They built their home on the timeless mountain that bears their name. They built their lives on even stronger stuff: the bedrock of family. This 5-disc set features all 25 Season-three episodes of the beloved series that ran 9 years and won 5 Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Drama Series. Through another hard year of the Depression, Season 3 entails the Walton family's discovery that the true richness in life comes from the joy they bring each other, while fans also relive John-Boy's first year at college.
Customer Reviews:
Growing up and branching out.......2007-06-13
Season 3 finds John-Boy a freshman at Boatwright University, realizing his longtime dream of attending college and becoming a writer. Of course, it isn't easy -- unable to afford the cost of living there, he must commute the 28 miles each day. That's the least of John-Boy's problems, however, as he struggles to fit in amongst rich classmates who never thought twice about whether college would be in their future.
Back on the mountain, the other Waltons are also growing up and branching out into the larger world. Mary Ellen, who has just begun pinning her hair up each day, attends her first college dance with one of John-Boy's friends. Jim-Bob, sick of being ignored by the elders, learns that running away from home isn't the answer, either. Having nursed a lifelong interest in art, Olivia finally musters the courage to sign up for a free adult education course...necessitating that she learn to drive!
Character development isn't limited to the Waltons, either -- store owner Ike, single for so long, finally meets a woman with whom he immediately falls in love.
Despite this being its third season, the warm supportiveness, tinged with humor, of the Walton clan remains as strong as ever in this DVD set.
3rd Season of the Waltons.......2007-05-28
Wonderful as always! One of the best family series to every grace television.
EXCELLENT SHOW STILL A BARE BONES RELEASE.......2007-04-18
I enjoy this show and the fair price is a plus. I would really like to see some sort of bonus material on these releases. The DVD has a good transfer. I deduct i star for no bonus material.
GREAT.......2007-04-05
I love these DVD'S. The color and clarity is great. The stories are so wonderful. They make me feel like i've stepped back in time to my childhood when things were a lot simpler and safer. We have a cabin in the Mts. and we try to go every weekend and these DVD's go with us every weekend. I have all 4 seasons. Can't wait for the next one to come out.
Heartwarming and wholesome show you want your family to watch........2007-03-17
My all time favorite TV series that's heartwarming and instills a sense of value that America used to have. Why can't they make shows like this today with good moral values, where the kids respect the parents and the Dad is a good leader of his household?
