A movie that exudes affection and goodwill, <I>The World's Fastest Indian</I> is an unabashed mash note to a lovely character from New Zealand's recent past. Burt Munro, played by Anthony Hopkins, is a cantankerous Kiwi with an obsession: he's been tinkering with his 1920s-era Indian brand motorcycle for years, pushing it to ever-faster speeds. It's the 1960s, and Burt has the utterly mad idea of taking the bike to the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah, site of world records for speed racing. The movie takes a while to get to the journey--and then the journey takes a while--but the genial atmosphere prevails. (People of a certain age, for whom the word "Bonneville" evokes pleasant associations with hotrods and world-speed records, will not be disappointed in the film's location shooting, or its sense of awe.) Hopkins is not quite on-the-money casting for the jovial, happy-go-lucky Munro, and his accent wavers, but he nails the emotional scenes and the fascination with speed. Smaller bits are well-filled by Diane Ladd and Christopher Lawford (son of Peter), who looks uncannily of the era. New Zealand director Roger Donaldson doesn't take any chances here, but the story clearly means something to him, and that sense of commitment carries the film through its sleepier moments. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

Great, uplifting movie.......2007-06-12
This is a thoroughly enjoyable movie. Anthony Hopkins is terrific. I highly recommend this film.
Great movie.......2007-06-12
Totally reminded me of my father-in-law. Great gift for all eccentric inventors or speed enthusiasts! Anthony Hopkins is extremely colorful and entertaining in this film.
Not a motorcycle movie.......2007-06-11
I'm an avid rider, but when I saw that Anthony Hopkins had the part of Burt Munro, it was clear this would not be just another motorcycle movie. It's an inspiring journey of faith, hope, courage, talent and perseverance. The motorcycle is only part of the story, albeit a prominent part. This wonderful epic of a wonderful man is filled with inspiration, joy and humor, and will find a place on my list of all-time favorites.
Worlds Fastest Indian.......2007-06-11
Great movie! This was another fantastic job by Anthony Hopkins. Great Family movie!
The Fastest Indian.......2007-06-08
This is an excellent production in which Anthony Hopkins
portrays Bert Munro,a New Zealand motor-cycle "personality".
Hopkins has captured not only a NZ South Island accent but also typical Kiwi characteristics. The story line is about a guy with little means, who with help along the way, achieves his dream and then some. The fastest Indian is a souped-up motor-cycle on which Bert set world speed
records on US saltflats.

Product Description
The revolution came when we weren't looking. It happened in a garage. In a dorm room. In countless hours of effort, imagining and intrigue. Apple co-founder Steve Jobs and Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates were changing the way the world works, lives and communicates.<BR /><BR />The event-packed saga of the quirky visionaries who jump-started the future unfolds with exhilarating, cutting-edge style in Pirates of Silicon Valley. Noah Wyle (ER) portrays Jobs and Anthony Michael Hall (The Dead Zone) portrays Gates in this chronicle of the fierce and often humorous battle to rule the fledgling personal computer empire. "The story is almost Shakespearean... it's a tale of lust, greed, ambition, love and hate," writer/director Martyn Burke reflects. And it's a success story unlike any other.<BR />

This dramatization of the tangled history of Apple Computer and Microsoft, based on a book by Paul Freiberger and Michael Swaine, hits enough of the right notes to make its failures all the more frustrating. The script follows the entwined paths of Apple's Steve Jobs and Microsoft's Bill Gates with a pointed sense of the cultural divide between the hip, self-absorbed Apple cofounder and the brilliant alpha geek behind Microsoft's eventual software empire, contrasting the Mac's countercultural underpinnings with the PC's more strait-laced origins. But <I>Pirates of Silicon Valley</I> seemingly can't decide whether it wants to be a serious-minded history of these key figures in the personal computer revolution or a trashy wallow in the more ignoble foibles of its principals. As a result, it falls short of exacting history while never achieving the guilty pleasure it might have.
If Gates has become synonymous with corporate conquest at its most striking, <I>Pirates</I>' interest lies more with Jobs, given a nervous energy and flashes of adolescent selfishness by Noah Wyle, who benefits from a reasonable physical resemblance to the Apple chief. Eyewear and a comb-over do nearly as well for Anthony Michael Hall, who also grafts some of Bill Gates's better-known mannerisms onto his performance and renders Gates as a smart if socially maladroit entrepreneur who, like Jobs, provides the ambition and business savvy to exploit his partner's computing talents. There are a few fanciful touches (Ballmer and Wozniak become Greek choruses, addressing the viewer as they comment on the principals), but the story plays out in straightforward fashion. It's tantalizing to consider how the Apple/PC melodrama might have fared with an edgier, more openly satirical script. <I>--Sam Sutherland</I>
Customer Reviews:
Insanely great!.......2007-06-04
Hugely enjoyable and quite accurate (by most accounts) telling of the rise and ultimate clash of two modern tech titans, Steve Jobs and Bill Gates. Canadian Martyn Burke deserves great credit for both writing and directing this gem. While made for television, this is better by far than most made-for-theater Hollywood productions. The 70's and 80's music fits especially well; tremendously appropriate songs and soundtrack for the story. And the use of the famous Apple "1984" commercial, compared with the vision of a huge, televised Bill Gates hovering over a humbled Steve Jobs is absolutely brilliant.
The dual narration is brilliant too, using the Steve Wozniak character to narrate the Apple story, while the Steve Ballmer character narrates the Microsoft side of things. Sure, there are major oversimplifications of many characters, and while a Paul Allen character is an active presence here - we learn virtually nothing about him as a person. But so what? As the commentary on the DVD points out, there's an almost Shakespearean feel to much of this. The focus is on the events surrounding the ultimate clash for PC superiority between Apple and Microsoft, and on Jobs himself, to a lesser extent on Gates. With no attempt to fully flesh out the other players (and none needed, in the particular story that's being told/dramatized). A few weakish scenes are included, but not many; virtually every scene adds a dimension to the plot and to the ultimate conclusion. The pace is very good, very strong. Noah Wyle gives a terrific performance as Steve Jobs; Anthony Michael Hall is also excellent as Bill Gates. And the DVD has a brief but interesting and entertaining introduction by Wyle; be sure to view it.
As to any "inaccuracies", from what I can tell those are very, very minor. Those interested may want to check Steve Wozniak's website, a section (in "letters") discusses his take on this movie. In a nutshell, Woz was not consulted for the movie, and was flattered by the way he was portrayed. He seemed to feel the movie was accurate or portrayed accuracies; he mentions a few things such as they weren't allowed to wear the "Alice in Wonderland" costumes home, but changed out of them before leaving the performance - personally I thought it was a nice touch to have them walking home while still in costume. Also there's some obvious dialog added for humorous or dramatic purposes; for example, in one scene the Gates character tries to connect socially with women by complimenting their "bandwidth" and by attempting to imitate John Travolta's disco moves while on rollerskates - funny, almost believable, but not likely strict reality. Or when both Jobs and Gates quote the Picasso line about "...great artists steal", but Gates (unlike Jobs) doesn't really care which artist said it. Minor stuff like that should be treated as artistic/dramatic license, not absolute reality. It's a movie (or docudrama), not a strict documentary, yet still manages to make a great story while still being essentially true to the reality of the events. (By the way, "Insanely Great" was of course an Apple marketing phrase for the Mac, created by Steve Jobs himself; so I'm not meaning to infringe on any copyright there!).
Decent TNT original movie, nice brief stroll through computer history........2007-05-31
The computer revolution has change everything over the past 30. I hope someday a good documentary will be available. This film is so far the only thing I have noted along the way that even tried to touch on the computer wars at the beginning. TNT produced this film back in 1999 as one of its first original movie shows. Its good drama, and really got me interested in looking at the interesting history of computer development. Yes it's kinda nerdy, but hey, I think everybody has to admit it, Apple/Macintosh has always been a more reliable/stable system, very hard to crash. Why the heck then did the IBM/microsoft platform take off as it did? Well, this movie only touches on it. Noah Wyle plays the outlandish Steve Jobes, who was co founder of Apple with Steve Woznyack. This movie illistrates his control in the company, but only touches how Apple's priprietary protection/isolation killed its strong foothold on the market, while the IBM/IBM clone market skyrocketed secondary to competition keeping computer price and software down while Microsoft, the little program maker, rake in the money from lisencing it's software. Is this really how Steve Jobes and Bill gates (anthony michael hall) are in real life, I don't think so, but hey, its still a decent movie. Check it out if you like this kind of history.
good but not accurate.......2007-05-21
the movie paints a good picture of the people in the movie, and touches on a lot of realistic events, but is not totally accurate
Good unbiased information.......2007-05-18
My wife and I enjoyed this film alot. It's cool to see how all of this computer stuff began, and how stupid the big companies were early on. It's interesting because they still are slow to react and a little stupid most of the time. It really shows the truth of what Bill Gates did, and has continued to do, which is be dishonest, cheat, steal, AND make really low quality products. But it is not biased as it shows the downfalls of Steve Jobs and Apple in the early days as well. Get this movie!
nonpareil.......2007-05-15
I've sat through this movie over twenty times, since we use it as part of a training course at work.
And every time, I gotta say, I'm hooked right up to the end. It grips me like few movies ever have. Even after all these viewings, my opinion of it could not be higher.
Offhand, this is probably the best movie I can think of that I know was made for TV (this was made for the TNT channel in the late 90's). I have never met anybody who was disappointed with this film, or even thought it so-so. Everybody remembers it.
The whole thing is Shakespearean. On the surface, you are treated to the inside story of the race to corner the PC market.
But the hubris! The complacency! The vision!
There is much to meditate on here.

In this 12th-century version of <I>Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf?</I>, Henry II of England (Peter O'Toole) and his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine (Katharine Hepburn), meet on Christmas Eve to discuss the future of the throne. These two are having slight marital problems, as she is kept in captivity most of the year for raising a rebellion against him, and he flaunts his young mistress. Then there are the problems raised by their three treacherous and traitorous sons.
James Goldman won an Oscar® for the brilliant screenplay, based on his Broadway play. It is a tad wordy, as the action is kept to a minimum, but those words are sharp as daggers. The humor is wicked and black and delivered with very dry, dead-on precision. Sparks fly and the screen sizzles whenever Hepburn and O'Toole tango, which is often. Both were nominated for Academy Awards® for their vigorous performances. (She won; he didn't.) There's also an infamous homo-erotic exchange between Philip of France (Timothy Dalton) and Richard the Lionhearted (Anthony Hopkins). Both actors were making their feature-film debuts. <I>--Rochelle O'Gorman</I>
Description

Behind the great stone walls of an English castle, the world's most powerful empire is in crisis. Three sons struggle to win their father's favoras well as his crown. King Henry II (Peter O'toole) and his queen, Eleanor (Katharine Hepburn), engage ina battle of royal wits that pits elder son Richard (Anthony Hopkins) against his brothers, while the cunning King Philip of France (Timothy Dalton) takes advantage of the internal fracturing in his bid to destroy their kingdom. *1968: Actress

The "Lion" roars.......2007-06-14
"The Lion in Winter" is one of the best films ever made. It has the language, scope and beauty of a great Shakespearean play. It also has two magnificent performances by O'Toole (King Henry II) and Hepburn (Queen Eleanor)and a fine early film appearance by Anthony Hopkins (Richard the Lionhearted). It concerns the struggle of Henry's three sons to take the crown and King Philip of France (Timothy Dalton) is willing to use Richard's love for him to destroy the kingdom.
Start to finish great performances........2007-06-06
Great storyline. Untoppable Performances. I keep buying copies, because my friends keep making off with them. This one dosn't dissapoint.
Well, What Family Doesn't Have Its Ups and Downs?.......2007-06-02
"Katharine Hepburn, from her first scene when she is briefly taken out of her 10-year imprisonment, shows a wonderful relish for even the most unimpressive sarcastic line. "Well, what family doesn't have its ups and downs," she says, when sodomy, patricide, treason and incest are running their daily course. There is something about an actress with this degree of presence and a wholly distinct, pleasant and idiosyncratic voice that gets her through even misplaced weepy or extravagant scenes." Renata Adler
How many times can you watch a masterpiece and not get tired of it? Apparently as many as you want. Thus 'The Lion In Winter' is the masterpiece for me. The action is contained within one day,Christmas Eve. Henry II, Peter O'Toole is 50 years old and wants to choose his heir before he dies. He has three sons: John, his favorite; Richard, the soldier genius; and Geoffrey, reserved and quiet. Henry calls a Christmas court, letting his wife, Eleanor of Aquitaine Katharine Hepburn out of prison for the occasion. King Philip of France is also a visitor. He wants to know when his sister will be married to the heir to the throne. But, Henry has not been able to appoint an heir yet, and what's more, the girl's become his mistress. This film marks the debut of Anthony Hopkins, as Richard the Lion-Hearted, Nigel Terry as the adolescent Prince John; John Castle, as Prince Geoffrey; and Timothy Dalton, as Philip of France. This film brought forth many Oscars and they deserve to be mentioned.
Katherine Hepburn-Eleanor of Aquitaine brought Hepburn her third of four Oscars.
Peter O'Toole- Nominated but did not win-Best Actor
James Goldman- Best Screenplay
Anthony Harvey- Best Director
Margarret Furst- Best Costume Design
Because of the powerful acting we know at the outset that the outcome will be a result of power, politics and will. The stakes grow high as the film moves along until there is no game any longer only reality. The emotional tug of war is palpable between the Queen and King. The issues of trust, love and honor are at stake. This film takes on the human emotions and the full realm of laughter, smiles, tears and anger invade our souls. We root for the Queen until her manipulation has so evidently destroyed her family. We feel sorrow for the three sons, until their foibles become self-evident. The King is the King and thus all powerful. And,the mistress is but the pawn in this game.
"Jesus himself would have a hard time bringing peace to this yuletide household. Here's a family whose every deed and word is a chess move or a dagger stroke. After all, there's more at stake than merely the future of England and France. Alliances (political and sexual) rise and fall amid skillful maneuvering, clashing, and scheming for Henry's throne. At the center of this regal melee are Henry and Eleanor, whose combination of high mutual fondness and take-no-prisoners warfare -- on battlefields and in bedrooms -- make them one of cinema's great complicated relationships."
Mark Bourne
If there are any neophytes out there who have not seen this film- take thee to the nearest DVD store. A film not to be missed.
Highly, Highly Recommended. prisrob 6-02-07

Absolutely excellent. The real purpose for the purchase was to have this great film on DVD. I curently have it on tape and by now it is worn out. Hepburn and O'Toole are exquisite. You feel as though you are right there in the mix of things, and oh what a mix. Would recommend it to everyone.

(Drama) A re-telling of the assassination of Senator Robert F. Kennedy at the Ambassador Hotel in 1968. The film follows 22 individuals who are all at the hotel for different purposes but share the common thread of anticipating Kennedy's arrival at the primary election night party, which would change their lives forever. This historic night is set against the backdrop of the cultural issues gripping the country at the time, including racism, sexual inequality and class differences.
Customer Reviews:
A Political Version of "Crash".......2007-06-13
I only got this movie because of the all-star cast. Having lived through the events I didn't feel the movie would do it justice but I was wrong. The movie uses all real footage of the events leading up to June 4, 1968 and focuses on the hotel on that fateful day. It is basically like the movie "Crash" and has many different stories going on at once inside the hotel where Kennedy's victory party and shooting took place. Like Crash the stories come together when the Senator is shot just after he makes his victory speech. There is a lot of inspirational footage, excellently interspersed throughout the film of Kennedy talking political issues both in California and about the country at large. Many of his thoughts ring true today with the concerns about the war in Iraq, global warming and poverty.
Each of the stories presented in the film are excellent by themselves and with so many big name actors, none have any bigger roles than any others. My favorite is one where a young man came with his girlfriend to the hotel to get married so he would not be sent to the front-line in Viet Nam. The girl's father calls him a coward, if that is the actual reason for the marriage. Another good tale involves Harry Belefonte dealing with the onset of Alzheimer's disease, while his main goal is to win a game of chess before he dies. Also, there is a tale of a Mexicano kitchen worker who wants to take off because he has Dodger tickets on the night that Don Drysdale is going for the consecuitive shut-out innings record. He talks about the Latinos being the next group to win their "civil rights."
The tales were so intriguing that this movie held me spellbound until the ending credits.
Good movie just know what you are expecting.......2007-06-13
Bobby is a good movie, however realize what the movie is portraying before you watch. I did not know much about the assasination of Robert Kennedy and I was expecting more of a biography on the specific events that led to the assasination. However, the movie is really more about a short glimpse of specific lives that were directly affected by the assasination of Kennedy at the Ambassador hotel.
Do not expect to learn more about the events that took place but rather the individuals who played some sort of role immediately following the assasination. The movie wasn't great, nor was it bad yet I think if I knew a little more about what to expect before I saw the movie I would have enjoyed it more.
The film making and the story line are extremely thought provoking and keep your interest throughout entire film. Although, you may be left somewhat dissapointed by the abrupt end. But what do you expect when you know exactly how this movie will end? Enjoy the film, just realize it is not about Bobby Kennedy, it is about the lives surrounding him on the day of his assasination
Good Acting, Some Problems - Not About Bobby Kennedy.......2007-06-07
I was very interested to see this movie, in part because of the historical period, and in part because of the cast.
1. The cast was generally wonderful, with an all-star cast playing regular folks going about their business at the Ambassador Hotel in Los Angeles on the day that Robert Kennedy was assasinated in June, 1968. Two of my favorites were Ashton Kutcher as a drug dealer turning two Kennedy staffers on to LSD, and Christian Slater as a rather unlikeable racist kitchen staff manager. Kutcher's real-life wife Demi Moore played a soggy alcoholic singer who passes out in the beauty shop chair with a martini in one hand and a Marlboro in the other. It seemed as though writer/director Estevez was aiming at something like "Babel", "Traffic", or an Altman picture in the way that the various stories danced around each other, all culminating with Kennedy's murder and the non-fatal wounding of a number of bystanders. Some of the writing was actually quite poetic, as when Martin Sheen's character talks to his materialistic wife about the real values in their marriage. That was really a great speech. At other times, the writing felt contrived.
2. Estevez' handling of the period was patchy, but that is understandable, since he was only six or seven years old when Kennedy was shot. Sometimes his "take" on Los Angeles 1968 was spot-on (as with the fabulous big hairpieces, earrings, and indoor smoking like chimneys), and sometimes way, way off. As, for example, when a young kitchen staffer says "I'm not a Mexican, I'm a Latino" - my recollection is that the PC term used at that time in Southern California wasn't "Latino", it was "Chicano". There were a number of other times when the language used was not accurate to the historical time frame, as when someone referred to "getting down", and (as all senior citizens know), people didn't start to get down until the 80's.
I thought about going with 3 stars here, but the actors were generally just too good. It is worth seeing for that alone, but it's not Altman and it's not "Traffic".

A lot could've gone wrong in <I>Red Dragon</I>, but the movie exceeds expectations. Replacing the acclaimed <I>Manhunter</I> as an "official" entry in the Hannibal Lecter trilogy, this topnotch thriller--the second adaptation of Thomas Harris's first Lecter novel--returns to the fertile soil of <I>The Silence of the Lambs</I>, serving as both prequel and heir to the legacy of Lecter as portrayed, with mischievous menace, by the great Anthony Hopkins. Familiar faces and locations reappear (along with <I>Lambs</I> screenwriter Ted Tally) as Lecter coaches FBI profiler Will Graham (Edward Norton) in tracking the horrific "Tooth Fairy" killer (Ralph Fiennes), whose transformative killing spree is inspired by a William Blake painting. By dutifully serving Harris's potent material, Tally and director Brett Ratner craft a suspenseful film worthy of its predecessors, bringing Hopkins full circle as one of the cinema's all-time greatest villains. With overtones of <I>Psycho</I> and a superb supporting cast, <I>Red Dragon</I> succeeds against considerable odds. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Customer Reviews:
Forget Man Hunter! .......2007-05-12
I give this movie four stars, because like all Hannibal Lector movies, the book is better. But if you are not up for reading a book, then the movie is a short and sweet summary. Of course Anthony Hopkins is as slithery as ever, but the rest of the cast is also amazing. Edward Norton and Ralph Fiennes are more than qualified to fill these complicated roles. If you have ever seen Man Hunter, erase it from your memory, it will only cause you damage. Red Dragon is a much better version than Man Hunter.
Better Than The Old Version MAN HUNTER!!!!.......2007-05-09
Good package protection and in great conditions, thanks.
Near Greatness.......2007-04-11
While this movie is not the best of the series it is good. Its near greatness. I would say if you have yet to see the others (get out from under your rock) this would be a great movie. The acting is top notch and the HDDVD transfer is great. So nice.
Same scenario than "Silence of the lambs".......2007-04-09
Nothing new here, this is simply a pale copy of the first movie "The silence of the lambs", there is absolutely nothing new here. The kind of movie we have seen over and over again. Stick with the first movie.
Very powerful.......2007-04-04
"Red Dragon" is a very interesting piece of modern cinema. It is scary, filled with action and suspence and has a very subtle underlying sense of humour. The cast performs very well, Anthony Hopkins reprising his probably most well known role as evil incarnate, Hannibal Lecter, and Edward Norton giving a performance nothing short of sheer brilliance. Norton was not really my bag prior to seeing this movie, but he performs so well that it immediately changed my mind. We can quite easily identify with his troubles, his tormented self and can almost hear the gears churning when he investigates a murder scene. Ralph Fiennes also delivers a great performance as the twisted murderer the "tooth fairy". There is a subtle feeling of madness underscoring the rage in him. Very good indeed. Very notable also is Philip Seymour Hoffman as the hack writer Freddy Lounds. In the short screen time that he has he still manages to leave us all with a very deep impression. In fact, the movie is, in a word, well cast and well performed.
The direction, editing and scoring of the film is equally up to par and really captures the mood perfectly.
The ending, as another reviewer remarked, is, although similar to the one in the book, not as powerful. This is probably because of the crowdpleasing factor. It is after all a hollywood movie. Then again, one shouldn't measure it against the book, but see it as an independent picture.
In short: this is definitely a film to watch. Highest possible recommendation.

<b>Manhunter</b>:Though it will always be remembered as the movie featuring the "other" Hannibal Lecter, Michael Mann's 1986 thriller Manhunter is nearly as good as The Silence of the Lambs, and in some respects it's arguably even better. Based on Thomas Harris's novel Red Dragon, which introduced the world to the nefarious killer Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter, the film stars William Petersen (giving a suitably brooding performance) as ex-FBI agent Will Graham, who is coaxed out of semiretirement to track down a serial killer who has thwarted the authorities at every turn.
Graham's approach to the case is a perilous one. First he seeks counsel with Lecter (Brian Cox) in the latter's high-security prison cell--an encounter that is utterly horrifying in its psychological effect--and then he begins to mold his own psyche to that of the killer, with potentially devastating results. As directed by Mann (who was at the acme of his success with TV's Miami Vice), this sophisticated cat-and-mouse game never resorts to the compromise of cheap thrills. Predating Anthony Hopkins's portrayal of Lecter by four years, Cox plays the character closer to Harris's original, lower-key conception, and he's no less compelling in the role. Petersen is equally well cast, and as always Mann employs rock music to astonishing effect, using nearly all of Iron Butterfly's heavy-metal epic "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida" to accompany the film's heart-stopping climactic sequence. All of this makes Manhunter one of the finest films of its kind, as well as further proof that Harris's fiction is a blessing to any filmmaker brave enough to adapt it. --Jeff Shannon
<b>The Silence of the Lambs</b>: Based on Thomas Harris's novel, this terrifying film by Jonathan Demme really only contains a couple of genuinely shocking moments (one involving an autopsy, the other a prison break). The rest of the film is a splatter-free visual and psychological descent into the hell of madness, redeemed astonishingly by an unlikely connection between a monster and a haunted young woman. Anthony Hopkins is extraordinary as the cannibalistic psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter, virtually entombed in a subterranean prison for the criminally insane. At the behest of the FBI, agent-in-training Clarice Starling (Jodie Foster) approaches Lecter, requesting his insights into the identity and methods of a serial killer named Buffalo Bill (Ted Levine). In exchange, Lecter demands the right to penetrate Starling's most painful memories, creating a bizarre but palpable intimacy that liberates them both under separate but equally horrific circumstances. Demme, a filmmaker with a uniquely populist vision (Melvin and Howard, Something Wild), also spent his early years making pulp for Roger Corman (Caged Heat), and he hasn't forgotten the significance of tone, atmosphere, and the unsettling nature of a crudely effective close-up. Much of the film, in fact, consists of actors staring straight into the camera (usually from Clarice's point of view), making every bridge between one set of eyes to another seem terribly dangerous. --Tom Keogh
<b>Hannibal</b>: Yes, he's back, and he's still hungry. Ten years after The Silence of the Lambs, Dr. Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter (Anthony Hopkins, reprising his Oscar-winning role) is living the good life in Italy, studying art and sipping espresso. FBI agent Clarice Starling (Julianne Moore, replacing Jodie Foster), on the other hand, hasn't had it so good--an outsider from the start, she's now a quiet, moody loner who doesn't play bureaucratic games and suffers for it. A botched drug raid results in her demotion--and a request from Lecter's only living victim, Mason Verger (Gary Oldman, uncredited), for a little Q and A. Little does Clarice realize that the hideously deformed Verger--who, upon suggestion from Dr. Lecter, peeled off his own face--is using her as bait to lure Dr. Lecter out of hiding, quite certain he'll capture the good doctor.</p>
Taking the basic plot contraptions from Thomas Harris's baroque novel, Hannibal is so stylistically different from its predecessor that it forces you to take it on its own terms. Director Ridley Scott gives the film a sleek, almost European look that lets you know that, unlike the first film (which was about the quintessentially American Clarice), this movie is all Hannibal. Does it work? Yes--but only up to a point. Scott adeptly sets up an atmosphere of foreboding, but it's all buildup for anticlimax, as Verger's plot for abducting Hannibal (and feeding him to man-eating wild boars) doesn't really deliver the requisite visceral thrills, and the much-ballyhooed climatic dinner sequence between Clarice, Dr. Lecter, and a third unlucky guest wobbles between parody and horror. Hopkins and Moore are both first-rate, but the film contrives to keep them as far apart as possible, when what made Silence so amazing was their interaction. When they do connect it's quite thrilling, but it's unfortunately too little too late. --Mark Englehart </p>

Classic, fantastic horror set.......2007-06-06
I recently bought Hannibal Rising, and was very impressed. It reminded me of the horrific energy I remembered from the earlier Hannibal Lecter movies.
It's been years since I've seen the earlier movies, so I bought this set from Amazon. I also ordered Red Dragon, individually. It has not yet arrived.
All of these movies are excellent. They're some of the best horror movies I'd seen in decades. I love this boxed set.
Worth it...........2007-05-29
I am a relatively new fan to this genre of movies and after reading the book Silence of the Lambs it was the next best thing. I throughly enjoyed this movie and haven't yet watched the others, yet is the key word, I'm sure I'll enjoy them as much as Silence of the Lambs. I highly recommend this collection for purchase....

Great buy, but a little disappointed........2007-03-31
I love the Hannibal movies. So I bought the three disc edition. The thing that was a little disappointing was that these dvds had NO BONUS FEATURES. I understand maybe Manhunter or even Silence of the Lambs probably wouldn't have any. But Hannibal definitely was released in the time frame to have special features. Regardless, they're still great movies, and I really enjoy them.
Hannible "Trilogy".......2007-03-27
Being the movie buff I am, I enjoyed this set; however, I was disappointed a bit. When I watched Hannible, it says, to watch the special features, insert disc 2. That's where the problem lies; there is no disc 2. Other than that I enjoyed it, although I wished it also included Red Dragon. Overall, I was very pleased with the set.
It was more than what I expected.......2007-03-21
Because it had manhunt which is the first version of red dragon and the first in the series. I give it two thumbs up.

Description
A psychopath nicknamed Buffalo Bill is murdering women across the Midwest. Believing it takes one to know one, the FBI sends Agent Clarice Starling (Foster) to interview a demented prisoner who may provide clues to the killer's actions. That prisoner is psychiatrist Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Hopkins), a brilliant, diabolical cannibal who agrees to help Starling only if she'll feed his morbid curiosity with details of her own complicated life. As their relationship develops, Starling is forced to confront not only her own hidden demons, but also an evil so powerful that she may not have the courage or strength to stop it!

"Put the F**king Lotion in the Basket.".......2007-05-11
The only film that can be dubbed a "horror film" to win the Oscar for Best Picture, "The Silence of the Lambs" is a film that has and continues to stand the test of time. #65 on The American Film Institute's Top 100, it's also one of the few films on that list to actually make the average film critic's top 100 as well. The film stars Jodie Foster in her 2nd Oscar-winning role as Clarice Starling, a fledgling FBI agent assigned by Jack Crawford (Scott Glenn) to interview Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins), a former psychiatrist doing time in a maximum security facility. There's a serial killer on the loose dubbed Buffalo Bill, who has been kidnapping innocent young women and taking portions of their skin. People often mention that this movie and its book are based on the legendary serial killer Ed Gein. It's not, but that aspect of the story is. As Clarice begins interviewing Lecter, she finds herself drawn further into the case and finds herself forming a sort-of friendship with Dr. Lecter. Now, this is a film that is much like "The Godfather" in the fact that it's been parodied endlessly ("Joe Dirt" and "Family Guy" have recently parodied this film), yet when we actually see the legendary scenes of the film we don't start laughing. Most people who haven't seen this film can still recite the lines "It puts the lotion on its skin or else it gets the hose again." This movie is not just filled with legendary portions of dialogue, but also legendary scenes. Notably, the introduction of Dr. Hannibal Lecter. This scene is simple, yet unforgettable. Clarice is walking down a hallway, to the final cell at the end. When Lecter is revealed, he is merely standing in his cell completely erect waiting for Starling. It's this kind of body language (among other things) that won Anthony Hopkins the Oscar. Few other actors have created characters that have had so much effect on our society (other examples would be Marlon Brando and Al Pacino). Ask someone to identify a line of dialogue from this film and it will either be the line I listed above or "I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti." This is a film in which Hopkins proved (much like Pacino did in "Dog Day Afternoon" and John Malkovich did in "Of Mice & Men") what a complete actor he is. In a lot of films you watch, you see an actor and think, "there's [insert name here]." When Lecter first appears, my thoughts were "there's Hannibal Lecter." Foster is also effective as Starling, considering she's in damn near every scene of the film. She's also the moral center of the film, as well as the protagonist. Hollywood is nervous about giving a woman the lead role, especially in a role that requires the woman to be both vulnerable and strong-willed at the same time. Foster does both and makes it completely believable. Ted Levine is one of the only actors who could've played Buffalo Bill (the only other actor I can think of that could have pulled off the role is John Malkovich). It's the voice mostly. Much like the line "I coulda been a contender" probably wouldn't have been much had it not been Brando who recited it. "The Silence of the Lambs" is a perfect film, at least of it's genre. The reason it has stood the test of time is for the same reason movies like "Pulp Fiction" and "Casablanca" have. Like those movies, every scene is absolutely necessary for the film to function as a whole. Howard Hawks once defined a great movie as "three great scenes and no bad scenes." "The Silence of the Lambs" has more than three great scenes, several legendary ones, and no bad scenes. After 16 years, more people still see this than they do its sequel and prequel "Hannibal" and "Red Dragon." I'm sure in 16 more years, it will still be seen more than those two films and it's recent 2nd prequel "Hannibal Rising."
GRADE: A
Hannibal at his Height.......2007-04-01
The Movie
Nevermind the pop culture boogie man the character became. The only superb film in the series was the first good horror/thriller in decades. It did this not by shedding the humanity of it's characters, but drenching them in it. The streamlined script (relying on exposition by showing memory in action rather than the usual talking head, for example, Clarices memories of her father), the superior direction and inventive cinematography steeped the film in tragedy, doom and suspense. The casting was perfect. All surrounded by institutional squalor and the flipside of the american dream.
The Disc
Finally we get the extras we deserve. I already have the Criterion Edition with it's interesting commentary track and more key players than you can shake a script at...well, all of them actually. Too bad they couldn't have combined the two discs for those who don't have the Criterion. As pissed off as I get about the heinous act of Double Dipping, this was one I couldn't pass up, and the extras made it well worth it for me.
Yet another Repackaging of a classic.......2007-03-18
I have an almost pathological devotion to this Film. Like Cassablaca it is that rare meeting of the right director with the right cast at the proper place in time. It is a tribute to this film that all the sequels and prequels have done well inspite of a less then spectacular treatment of the authors writen word. (Don't get me started on the ending of the Movie "Hannibal"!
I own the original DVD of SOL and the Criterian editon and because of the added extras listed on the sales page I decided to purchase this two disk package. I have to say I enjoyed the new Two Disk package very much but can not really say if it is worth the purchase if you are like me and own any of the earlier multi feature packages.
The feature on the making of the film that show the building of the feature and it's inpact durring it's initial release was very interesting. It shows how unique a film it was and how it's very disturbing story caused such a stur even at Oscar time. I had almost forgoten that.
There is a very interesting "From Page to Screen" piece that I always find enjoyable. These featurettes are always literate and well constructed.
One aspect of the this set I truly loved was the Anthony Hopkins phone message in Character you can transfer to your message machine. I was so there for that. ( I need Help. HeHe)
As far as the transfer quality it is a fine letterbox quality rendering and It is almost theatre like if you have a Hi-Def televison and I urge all who have the Dash for such a purchase to make it. It takes the viewing experiance to the next level.
In the end It is a very good package and I do not feel I was swindled by making the choice of buying it. I don't think alot of new ground was covered from the other special additons but the small diffeances were enough for me.
I like scary movies........2007-03-16
Silence of the Lambs is an intense psychological thriller. Anthony Hopkins is truly creepy and believable and Hannibal the cannibal. Jodie Foster is great as the rookie FBI agent given a case that required her to learn fast and think faster. I like this movie very much.

With dizzying cinematic tricks and astonishing performances, Francis Coppola's 1992 version of the oft-filmed Dracula story is one of the most exuberant, extravagant films of the 1990s. Gary Oldman and Winona Ryder, as the Count and Mina Murray, are quite a pair of star-crossed lovers. She's betrothed to another man; he can't kick the habit of feeding off the living. Anthony Hopkins plays Van Helsing, the vampire slayer, with tongue firmly in cheek. Tom Waits is great fun as Renfield, the hapless slave of Dracula who craves the blood of insects and cats. Sadie Frost is a sexy Lucy Westenra. And poor Keanu Reeves, as Jonathan Harker, has the misfortune to be seduced by Dracula's three half-naked wives. There's a little bit of everything in this version of Dracula: gore, high-speed horseback chases, passion, and longing.
Customer Reviews:
Lush and decadent!.......2007-06-02
Purists might hate this version of Dracula for the liberties it takes but I loved it. Gary Oldman's performance as Dracula was simply amazing...he brings romance to the role, a dark knight who is depicted more as a victim of fate than a true evil creature, and his love for Mina [whom he feels is the reincarnation of his long-dead wife] is altogether real and credible. Anthony Hopkins brings a certain level of zealousness to the role of Van Helsing, but I can't say Iwas very impressed by Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder's performances. Firstly there was no chemistry between them though they were supposed to be engaged, and similarly Winona's Mina seemed like a cold fish to me, especially in her love scenes with the Count [the actress who played Lucy on the other hand was pretty scintillating].But despite some of the flawed performances, the movie on the whole was beautifully filmed. The cinematography was lush and evoked decadent images, especially the seduction scenes, in particular Keanu's seduction by the three wives of Dracula, and also Lucy's seduction and attack by Dracula. The costumes are sumptuous to look at. The use of the color red throughout the movie [Lucy's dress, the scene where Dracula stalks Mina] is vivid and reminds us of the lust for blood. The score is haunting and serves to keep viewers' at the edge of their seats as the story unfolds. Overall, this is one of the best contemporary adaptations of Dracula, and a classic.
95% Excellence; 5% Missed Opportunities.......2007-05-15
The most grandiose retelling of the legendary story, and one that casts one of the world's most famous tales of horror as a love story (although certainly a very dark love story), this 1992 version of Dracula features Gary Oldman turning in probably the greatest portrayal of the Count ever.
Everything in this huge, haunting tale centers around the love story between Dracula (tied in much closer here than in most depictions to his supposed real-life counterpart, Vlad The Impaler) and Mina, the reincarnation of his centuries-ago love, Elisabeta. Beginning with the origin of Dracula's vampirism following Elisabeta's death, the story then flashes forward to late-1800s Transylvania and Johnathan Harker's famous trip to the Count's ancient castle. Having dwelled in and terrorized Transylvania for centuries now, the Prince Of Darkness comes by chance upon Harker's locket, in which is a small picture of Mina, the exact image of Dracula's deceased wife. The passion reawakened in the lord of the vampires, he journeys to London and confirms that Mina and Elisabeta are one and the same. From there the vampire Dracula preys on inhabitants of the city even as the mortal and emotional side of the beast is reawakened by re-discovery of his true love.
On a technical scale, "Bram Stoker's Dracula" is brilliant, with masterful cinematography, an outstanding dark score by Wojciech Kilar, chilling shadow imagery and extraordinary special effects. The romantic angle is also a total success. Where the movie does run into some trouble is here: despite the intensified focus on Dracula and Mina, the Dracula tale is still very much an ensemble piece, and some of the other characters just aren't captured as well as I wished they had been in a movie that was otherwise so great. It's not the performances per se, it's just that things didn't come together for some of the other characters. Dr. Van Helsing (although very well played by the always impressive Anthony Hopkins) comes off cold, arrogant, and curiously unconcerned for the people he's supposedly trying to protect - a far cry from the compassionate, courageous and emminently likable versions of the doctor seen in movies like "Horror Of Dracula" (with Peter Cushing as Van Helsing). I think that they may have been thinking that in presenting some sympathetic aspects to the otherwise evil Dracula, they had to counterbalance it by 'darkening' Van Helsing a bit. I don't think it really worked. Add to this a somewhat wishy-washy Harker and a Mina who wasn't nearly as developed as her pivotal role would have seemed to dictate, and it detracts a bit from the whole. The 'lesser' players - Lucy, her three suitors, and the insane Renfield, were all better done in my opinion. Dracula himself is done to perfection. In spite of the occasional problems with some of the characters, "Bram Stoker's Dracula" keeps coming on strong all the way through - until, tragically, the last five minutes or so. With a kind of anti-climatic (though far from terrible) ending to what was a vibrant and dramatic movie, plus the difficulties with some of the characters, we're left with a great show but one that fell a bit short of the mark it could have hit.
Still highly recommended; the weaker parts wouldn't have been so noticeable if 95% of the movie wasn't so awesome. A very, very good version of the Dracula tale despite a few chinks in the armor.
extremely good movie with a few minor flaws.......2007-05-15
A good film that for me sums up alot of what was good about early 1990s cinema. Oldman as dracula, Hopkins as van hellsing, Richard E Grant as Dr Seward, Carey Elwes as Arthur Holmwood and country legend Tom Waits as renfield make this film an extremely well acted peice. It is an alternative take on the book, much like the last temptation of christ was a different take on the life of christ. The bones of the story are there but some characters are more realistic and different. Van helsing is a pompus , lecherous alchoholic with a good heart, Seward is addicted to morphine and dracula was actually a victim of life but nevertheless a creature of darkness.
This movies best feature was that it showed vampires in an extremely unique and interesting way, they are not just normal guys with fangs and charisma like in the christopher lee draculas, but are powerfull creatures of the night, capable of flight, shape changing, mind manipulation and telekinesis. all together a fantastic romp.
Fact, Fiction and My Inspiration!.......2007-05-11
1462, Transylvania, Vlad the Impaler leaves his wife to fight the Turks. Out of malice, The Turks send her a letter telling her that her husband is dead. She is so distraught over his death and terrified at being captured that she throws herself from the castle turrets. When Vlad returns, he is told that his wife may not enter the Kingdom of Heaven as she has killed herself, which is a mortal sin. Vlad immediately renounces God and then he himself is condemned.
400 years later, Jonathon Harker leaves London and his fiancée Mina to travel to Transylvania. He has been assigned to help Count Dracula acquire property in England. Jonathon may never return...
This film, despite its flaws, will always hold a place in my heart as it inspired me to write my novel, Vrolok. I have always loved horror movies so when I heard that Francis Ford Coppola was making a new Dracula film, I could not wait to see it. I remember eagerly anticipating the announcement of who was to play Dracula, and when I found out that it was Gary Oldman, I was not happy! The only thing I had seen him in was JFK, and I was not very impressed (I was too young to have appreciated Sid and Nancy). However, I still decided it was worth going to the cinema to see the movie as Keanu Reeves, Cary Elwes and Bill Campbell were also in it. From the moment Gary Oldman appears on screen, he captivates his audience. His performance is camp, overdone, and at times preposterous, yet it is still somehow seductive, mesmerizing, and sublime. (Bram Stoker would have been proud!). He even utters the line "The children of the night. What sweet music they make" with a thick Romanian accent and gets away with it. I saw this film when I was fifteen and was immediately converted into a life long Gary Oldman fan.
As previously stated, and despite Oldman's performance, the film does have its flaws. Keanu Reeves is about as wooden as a stake and the rest of the cast seem to, just like Gary Oldman, overdo the accents and this is a strategy that doesn't quite work for the rest of the cast. In addition, Sadie Frost and Wynona Ryder running around in the rain in see-through outfits is clichéd and slightly annoying (I am sure most boys who see this film love that bit). Apart from Oldman's performance, there is one other thing that has to be commended - the soundtrack - both Wojciech Kilar's score and Annie Lennox's theme are dark, chilling, and poignant.
All in all a great movie - it inspired me to write a book that may or may not make me a million but will always be something that I am proud to have completed.
Come on you bunch of Siskels!.......2007-04-11
Ok you bunch of no taste bums! lol! First, the only word I could have ever associated with Dracula before I watched this movie was TACKY. The big capes, the really bad accents and the bats on a string, were all so overtly horrid, I could never bear to watch those movies. This movie was a dark love story with superb special effects and a truly superior performance by Gary Oldman as Dracula. I swear, I think that man can be anyone! I grant you, Keanu did have a poor grasp of the Brittish accent and Winona struggled a bit in the passion area, but their performances were above adequate and Winona was a perfect straight man to Oldman's lavish Dracula performance. Anyone who could insinuate that Anthony hopkins was even capable of a bad performance, should be strung up in the town square and tickled mercilessly until unconscious! lol!!
All the world is a critic and for my money, as long as I enjoyed a movie, the whys and wherefores aren't really that important. Maybe this kind of movie is not your cup of tea. If not, don't ruin it for the rest of us by your crude and mellow dramatic reviews. Take my advice, buy this movie! If you want to see the real love story behind the Dracula myth, without all the "bluck bluck, I come to bite your neck" stuff, then this movie is for you. If you want "Blade" in the 1800's, this is probably not for you.

A box-office hit when released in 1994, this sprawling, frequently overwrought familial melodrama may get sillier as its plot progresses, but it's the kind of lusty, character-based epic that Hollywood should attempt more often. It's also an unabashedly flattering star vehicle for Brad Pitt as Tristan--the rebellious middle son of a fiercely independent Montana rancher and military veteran (Anthony Hopkins)--who is routinely at odds with his more responsible older brother, Alfred (Aidan Quinn), and younger brother, Samuel (Henry Thomas). From the battlefields of World War I to his adventures as an oceangoing sailor, Tristan's life is full of personal torment, especially when he returns to Montana and finds himself competing with Alfred over Samuel's beautiful widow (Julia Ormond), whose passion for Tristan disrupts the already turbulent Ludlow clan. Under the wide-open canopy of Big Sky country, this operatic tale unfolds with all the bloodlust, tragedy, and scenery-chewing performances you'd expect to find in a hokey bestselling novel (in fact, it's based on the acclaimed novella by Jim Harrison), but it's a potent mix that's highly entertaining. Not surprisingly, John Toll won an Academy Award for his breathtaking outdoor cinematography. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Customer Reviews:
Three brothers and one woman under the Big Sky country........2007-06-17
This movie is an epic tale told of three brothers and one woman in Montana in the first part of the twentieth century. The youngest brother comes home from college with a beautiful woman on his side. She falls for the middle brother Brad Pitt, who is not altogether interested. The oldest brother falls hopelessly in love with her. This movies plot does get convoluted and confusing at times. The tortured soul that is the middle brother is a model for narcissistic ego maniac. It does have beautiful cinematography, and the story and the characters are interesting enough to keep your attention. The problem I have with the movie is that it does just get too bogged down with its own story. Overall it is fun to watch and I recommend it.
Love, betrayal, and drama..........2007-05-16
The beauty of the countryside in this movie is magnificent. The Rocky Mountains of Montana in the early 1900s must have offered challenging experiences as people wrestled with the elements.
The movie is the story of a man, played by Anthony Hopkins, who has three sons and is abandoned by his wife. So he sets out to raise these three boys and at some point writes to his wife to say... I know how to guide men through war, but this is much harder...
Anthony Hopkins plays the role of Colonel Ludlow, discharged from the war because he wanted to regain some sanity. Therefore, he hates government, he despises the drive to conquer and fight over land, and is highly protective of Indians.
This family of men lives out in the wilderness, therefore, nature is the chisel that forms the character of the three boys. They are very close and the oldest two, played by Brad Pitt and Aidan Quinn, are extremely caring and protective of their younger brother, played by Henry Thomas.
The younger son goes away to college and there he meets Susanna, played by Julia Ormond [played Princess Guinevere in the movie First Knight]. He falls in love with her and upon returning home, brings her along to meet the family.
As she enters the life of these lonely men, she captures the heart of each and everyone. The father is delighted that a refined lady has joined them because thanks to her they read, sing, and enjoy the feminine side of life. But... the three brothers soon encounter the difficulties of jealousy, envy, betrayal and competition for the same woman.
Brad Pitt, as usual, plays the role of the man who breaks other people's relationships, breaks hearts all around, but his performance is superb as Tristan... the favorite son.
Don't miss it! A 1994 Academy winner for best cinematography, this movie offers the passionate journey into the darkest secrets of love, betrayal, and families.
One of the best movies ever made........2007-03-27
Personally I think this movie is one the best that has ever been made. The acting is all superb and the storyline is so unique that I have never seen another movie like it. It is the story of a legend as the young boys grow into men and strive to find their own way in the world.
Good, old-fashioned family saga.......2007-02-24
If you liked Brad Pitt before he began appearing on the cover of People magazine every week, this is the film for you. Set in the early 20th c., before and after WWI, it's the story of Captain Ludlow, a veteran of the Indian Wars, marvelously played by Anthony Hopkins, and his three sons. Brad Pitt is Tristan, the middle son, a loner and lover of the wild, incredibly sexy and the favorite. Beautiful Julia Ormond shows up on the arm of the youngest brother, Samuel, as his fiancée, and the seclusion that the Captain has enjoyed from the turmoil of the wars is shattered. All three brothers are smitten, but reality intrudes when the idealistic Samuel decides to go to Canada to enlist, and his devoted brothers go with him to protect him. Samuel's foolish decision sets off a train of events that leaves many victims behind, except Tristan, who in the end is "the rock against which all others break."
Brad Pitt is marvelous in this film--although a bit overwrought at times, he can convey love, sincerity, integrity and humor, as well as brutality and insanity. Aidan Quinn, who seems to do mostly TV these days, is the pained older brother, who does everything right but is never loved. This sweeping epic won the Oscar for cinematography, and the prize was well-deserved. Be prepared for a few tough WWI scenes, and some gratuitous gore along the way, but the story grabs you and doesn't let go--you'll enjoy it.
Rage against Leviathon.......2007-02-17
Three sons grow up under the authority and love of a libertarian father. They fall in love with the same woman and sibling rivalry takes on a devastating turn. Each brother attempts to find his place in the world whether it be with the accepted norms of society, the revolutionaries, or the extreme individualist anarcho-libertarian life. Each pays a heavy price for his choice. A moving tale of relationships, government, and belonging. The Montana scenery is as much a star as any of the main characters. A wonderful piece of work that will leave you pondering the intricate plot themes.
