There's no getting around a simple, basic truth: watching Lawrence of Arabia in any home-video format represents a compromise. There's no better way to appreciate this epic biographical adventure than to see it projected in 70 millimeter onto a huge theater screen. That caveat aside, David Lean's masterful "desert classic" is still enjoyable on the small screen, especially if viewed in widescreen format. (If your only option is to view a "pan & scan" version, it's best not to bother; this is a film for which the widescreen format is utterly mandatory.) Peter O'Toole gives a star-making performance as T.E. Lawrence, the eccentric British officer who united the desert tribes of Arabia against the Turks during World War I. Lean orchestrates sweeping battle sequences and breathtaking action, but the film is really about the adventures and trials that transform Lawrence into a legendary man of the desert. Lean traces this transformation on a vast canvas of awesome physicality; no other movie has captured the expanse of the desert with such scope and grandeur. Equally important is the psychology of Lawrence, who remains an enigma even as we grasp his identification with the desert. Perhaps the greatest triumph of this landmark film is that Lean has conveyed the romance, danger, and allure of the desert with such physical and emotional power. It's a film about a man who leads one life but is irresistibly drawn to another, where his greatness and mystery are allowed to flourish in equal measure. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
A powerfully brilliant film, Lean's great masterpiece from a film renaissance. .......2007-06-21
There is no way that enough could be said about the film "Lawrence of Arabia."
Based loosely on Lawrence's book "Revolt in the Desert," which is and abridged version of "Seven Pillars of Wisdom."
This the definitive classic film from a transitional time just before salacious movies became the norm. It is to director David Lean's credit that he chose patently unknown actors (at the time) for his key roles that truly made this film soar. The fact that they performed so exceptionally is a testament to the professionalism and dedication of those actors.
The contributions of "Lawrence of Arabia" to future films are seen to this day in the cinematographic techniques and similar shots in recent films.
Compared to Lawrence's books, the film, by virtue of its medium can never capture the Shakespearean quality language that T.E. Lawrence possessed. If any book parallels the film it would be Lowell Thomas's 1925 book, "With Lawrence in Arabia," that recounts the journalist's experience as an "imbedded" reporter with Lawrence. Thomas is often credited with spreading the stories of Lawrence's Arabian exploits that made him so popular in the west.
A simply brilliant film on par with Lean's "Bridge on the River Kwai." A motion picture nearly as remarkable as the man himself.
I waited much too long.......2007-05-29
I had never before seen one frame of this film, and now I hope one day to have the chance to see it on a big screen, even a big-screen tv. Wherever this was filmed, it seems no-expense-spared in its lushness, in its sets, in its battle scenes. Lean was at the top of his genius as far as I'm concerned.
O'Toole's performance was, as O'Toole himself, as T E Lawrence was, also, quirky, unpredictable, subtle. His character seems to move from boredom to arrogance to brilliance to cynicisim to sensitivity to near-madness, and then back again. O'Toole's acting outshines everyone else's, even the estimable Alec Guinness, though Alec as King Faisal is fun to watch--he, too, like the British, uses Lawrence toward his own ends. He plays the "noble sheik" who wants to lead his own people, because he is just another power-hungry leader.
The desert scenes are beautiful, the glowing shots almost familiar because we've seen similar movie shots like these, but they were AFTER this film was made--it clearly inspired many imitators. You can almost feel the desert heat and dirt. The film also offers prescient insights into today's sectarian violence where religious and tribal loyalties and feuds are seemngly more important to many Arab leaders than are national agendas or progress for all their people. The history within the film is mostly accurate and there is no neat wrap-up at the end, no ponderous speeches, no stirring conclusion. I waited too long to see this film but now I know why it is a classic.
This is the wide-screen edition, which is essential to appreciating the cinematography.
Lawrence has one problem.......2007-05-25
My VHS tape of Lawrence of Arabia arrived quickly and had no noticable flaws. However, when I viewed the video, I found a 30 second section on the second tape that was damaged. Otherwise, the tape was very good.
Experiencing Lawrence Of Arabia DVD on a new 37" TV.......2007-05-15
Our 2002 JVC recently bit the dust(went DARK)and we upgraded to a 37" Olevia (Best Buy from Consumer reports). We tried our new "Lawrence" DVD and were stunned to see the difference in picture quality, sound and brightness. The desert vistas were breathtaking and it was like being there - - - with a regular DVD.
This picture and the music are as good as they get. A monumental achievement!
Well Worth the Honors.......2007-05-13
In a world where we can only take YouTube videos for 10 minutes at a time, or have commercials that are a brief 30 seconds long, it's amazing to expect people to sit still for 217 minutes straight in order to watch a long, drawn out epic story. This isn't a rough-and-fast war film full of flowing blood and heads blowing off. It's much more subtle than that. It's about understanding a people very different from yourself, about being willing to immerse yourself in their world.
Get yourself set up front for a long, thoughtful experience. Pour yourself a glass of wine. Set out a tray of cheese and grapes. Watch this on a widescreen TV if at all possible so you get the full sweeping experience of the hot desert, the enormous landscapes. This movie really does transport you to another world - where the ticking clock doesn't matter as much as the hot sun moving slowly ... slowly across the sky.
This really is a journey. Lawrence was an 'every man' at the beginning, drawn into the situation, drifting along. As he went, he grows, matures, and learns to take a stand. When others would abandon a boy to the fates, Lawrences decides that the boy can be saved. It is not up to nature - it is up to each of us, as a human, to make a stand for what we believe in.
This is definitely a film you want to watch on DVD - no commercials, no interruptions, no cutting out segments to "save time". It is almost a form of meditation, to immerse yourself in a world where a different clock kept time. The messages from the early 20th century are just as meaningful today. We must learn from our history.
Highly recommended.

Originally made for TV in 1977, this in-depth (six hours plus) version of Jesus' life is so thorough that the first hour is devoted solely to the story of his birth. The film doesn't skimp on some of the other landmark events of this famous story either. Director Franco Zeffirelli gives more than 12 minutes screen time each to the Last Supper and the Crucifixion. Passages of the Bible are quoted verbatim, the locations have a Palestine-like authenticity, and, aside from some of the principals (Robert Powell as Jesus, Olivia Hussey as Mary, and Stacy Keach as Barabbas), many of the non-Roman characters are actually played by Semitic-looking actors. Zeffirelli diligently provides the sociopolitical background that gave rise to Jesus' following and the crisis in belief it caused for the people of Israel (and one or two Romans). While not graphic by today's standards, some of the scenes--baby boys being ripped from their mothers' arms and slaughtered, nails being driven into Jesus' hands--may disturb young and/or sensitive children. <I>--Kimberly Heinrichs</I>

Best Jesus Gestures Representation.......2007-06-23
There is not another movie that will show you what a human Jesus can look like better than this movie, eating, walking or thinking while he speaks are some of the characteristcs that shows how Divine an actual human being can be. A real masterpiece that will get you familiar to Jesus Ghospel's personallity.
The DVD says that comes in Spanish, but it doesn't, there is an exelent Spanish version for this movie, but is not included in this DVD, even though it says it is included; however the English version, which is the original version, surprisely is very good, so I'm not complaining.
Jesus of Nazareth.......2007-06-02
For anyone who is a history buff I can honestly say that this is the closest that comes to truth from the history of the bible of Jesus Christ's time on earth. Everytime I watch it I always have tears in my eyes. A very beautiful film.
The Life Of Christ.......2007-05-30
The best version of the life of Jesus, I have seen.
Just what we expected.......2007-05-17
This is a great movie, which all catholics have as a reference for Holy Week. It depicts the life of Jesus since he was born, and dramatically but with realism brings it all the way through his resurrection. Despite the minimum use of special effects, it brings quite an amazing message from the Gospels, with amazing acting from all main characters.
This move makes you feel as if you were actually there... nice acquisition.
A must see movie.......2007-05-15
I have seen a lot of movies on this subject this one goes into more detail and seems a lot more believable.

Description
Director David Lean follows the heroic true-life odyssey of T.E. Lawrence (Peter O'Toole) in this dramatic portrait of the famed British officer's journey to the Middle East. Assigned to Arabia during World War I, Lawrence courageously unites the warring Arab factions into a strong guerrilla front and leads them to brilliant victories in treacherous desert battlefields where they eventually defeat the ruling Turkish Empire.

Customer Reviews:
Great film, transfer not up to other Fox classics.......2007-05-31
Irresistible hogwash from the golden days of these swashbuckler films. In many ways, more satisfying than "Pirates of the Carribean" since this film is slightly more grounded in a recognizable reality, and is therefore somehow more accessible. The Technicolor photography, which was one of the film's many asstes, receives much attention on this DVD, with Maureen O'Hara's commentary discussing the technique and the film's use of it. But the transfer here isn't up to snuff: some scenes are soft, and the color is subdued and muddy ocassionally. It's not a bad transfer, but certainly not as sharp as Fox's "Leave Her to Heaven," or "Blood and Sand". Still, for fans of Power, O'Hara, or the underrated Laird Cregar, an entertaining and physically lavish production worth more than one viewing. Old Hollywood the way it used to be, when opulent production values and sincere casts made such nonsense a real treat.
Johnny Depp...eat your heart out..........2007-05-29
Old school pirate movie...just as good as newer Pirates of the Caribbean...Tyrone Power swashbuckling his way throughout...if you like pirates and old films...this is a movie for you.
The Black Swan.......2007-05-20
Ecxelent Adventure. Tyron Power at his best with the gratest Maureen Ohara. Full of ecxitement, great for kids.
Maureen O'Hara and Tyrone Power - who could want more?.......2007-05-15
I mainly purchased this because Maureen O'Hara did a commentary track for this picture. Since she is a favorite of mine, I wanted to hear some of her stories and insight in working with Tyrone Power and on this particular film. I only wish that the other commenter would have had more information about the film (or 20th Century Fox) to speed up the dialog between them or to prompt Maureen O'Hara to say more than she did. As for the film, it's a classic tale of pirates and adventure. A good addition to any collection.
Great adaptation of the Sabatini novel.......2007-04-14
An excellent movie. Lest we forget, it was based on the classic swashbuckler written by Rafael Sabatini.

A box-office hit when released in 1994, this sprawling, frequently overwrought familial melodrama may get sillier as its plot progresses, but it's the kind of lusty, character-based epic that Hollywood should attempt more often. It's also an unabashedly flattering star vehicle for Brad Pitt as Tristan--the rebellious middle son of a fiercely independent Montana rancher and military veteran (Anthony Hopkins)--who is routinely at odds with his more responsible older brother, Alfred (Aidan Quinn), and younger brother, Samuel (Henry Thomas). From the battlefields of World War I to his adventures as an oceangoing sailor, Tristan's life is full of personal torment, especially when he returns to Montana and finds himself competing with Alfred over Samuel's beautiful widow (Julia Ormond), whose passion for Tristan disrupts the already turbulent Ludlow clan. Under the wide-open canopy of Big Sky country, this operatic tale unfolds with all the bloodlust, tragedy, and scenery-chewing performances you'd expect to find in a hokey bestselling novel (in fact, it's based on the acclaimed novella by Jim Harrison), but it's a potent mix that's highly entertaining. Not surprisingly, John Toll won an Academy Award for his breathtaking outdoor cinematography. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Three brothers and one woman under the Big Sky country........2007-06-17
This movie is an epic tale told of three brothers and one woman in Montana in the first part of the twentieth century. The youngest brother comes home from college with a beautiful woman on his side. She falls for the middle brother Brad Pitt, who is not altogether interested. The oldest brother falls hopelessly in love with her. This movies plot does get convoluted and confusing at times. The tortured soul that is the middle brother is a model for narcissistic ego maniac. It does have beautiful cinematography, and the story and the characters are interesting enough to keep your attention. The problem I have with the movie is that it does just get too bogged down with its own story. Overall it is fun to watch and I recommend it.
Love, betrayal, and drama..........2007-05-16
The beauty of the countryside in this movie is magnificent. The Rocky Mountains of Montana in the early 1900s must have offered challenging experiences as people wrestled with the elements.
The movie is the story of a man, played by Anthony Hopkins, who has three sons and is abandoned by his wife. So he sets out to raise these three boys and at some point writes to his wife to say... I know how to guide men through war, but this is much harder...
Anthony Hopkins plays the role of Colonel Ludlow, discharged from the war because he wanted to regain some sanity. Therefore, he hates government, he despises the drive to conquer and fight over land, and is highly protective of Indians.
This family of men lives out in the wilderness, therefore, nature is the chisel that forms the character of the three boys. They are very close and the oldest two, played by Brad Pitt and Aidan Quinn, are extremely caring and protective of their younger brother, played by Henry Thomas.
The younger son goes away to college and there he meets Susanna, played by Julia Ormond [played Princess Guinevere in the movie First Knight]. He falls in love with her and upon returning home, brings her along to meet the family.
As she enters the life of these lonely men, she captures the heart of each and everyone. The father is delighted that a refined lady has joined them because thanks to her they read, sing, and enjoy the feminine side of life. But... the three brothers soon encounter the difficulties of jealousy, envy, betrayal and competition for the same woman.
Brad Pitt, as usual, plays the role of the man who breaks other people's relationships, breaks hearts all around, but his performance is superb as Tristan... the favorite son.
Don't miss it! A 1994 Academy winner for best cinematography, this movie offers the passionate journey into the darkest secrets of love, betrayal, and families.
One of the best movies ever made........2007-03-27
Personally I think this movie is one the best that has ever been made. The acting is all superb and the storyline is so unique that I have never seen another movie like it. It is the story of a legend as the young boys grow into men and strive to find their own way in the world.
Good, old-fashioned family saga.......2007-02-24
If you liked Brad Pitt before he began appearing on the cover of People magazine every week, this is the film for you. Set in the early 20th c., before and after WWI, it's the story of Captain Ludlow, a veteran of the Indian Wars, marvelously played by Anthony Hopkins, and his three sons. Brad Pitt is Tristan, the middle son, a loner and lover of the wild, incredibly sexy and the favorite. Beautiful Julia Ormond shows up on the arm of the youngest brother, Samuel, as his fiancée, and the seclusion that the Captain has enjoyed from the turmoil of the wars is shattered. All three brothers are smitten, but reality intrudes when the idealistic Samuel decides to go to Canada to enlist, and his devoted brothers go with him to protect him. Samuel's foolish decision sets off a train of events that leaves many victims behind, except Tristan, who in the end is "the rock against which all others break."
Brad Pitt is marvelous in this film--although a bit overwrought at times, he can convey love, sincerity, integrity and humor, as well as brutality and insanity. Aidan Quinn, who seems to do mostly TV these days, is the pained older brother, who does everything right but is never loved. This sweeping epic won the Oscar for cinematography, and the prize was well-deserved. Be prepared for a few tough WWI scenes, and some gratuitous gore along the way, but the story grabs you and doesn't let go--you'll enjoy it.
Rage against Leviathon.......2007-02-17
Three sons grow up under the authority and love of a libertarian father. They fall in love with the same woman and sibling rivalry takes on a devastating turn. Each brother attempts to find his place in the world whether it be with the accepted norms of society, the revolutionaries, or the extreme individualist anarcho-libertarian life. Each pays a heavy price for his choice. A moving tale of relationships, government, and belonging. The Montana scenery is as much a star as any of the main characters. A wonderful piece of work that will leave you pondering the intricate plot themes.

Keanu Reeves is completely wooden in this romantic misfire by Alfonso Arau (<I>Like Water for Chocolate</I>). Reeves plays a World War II vet who hits the road as a traveling salesman and agrees to help a desperate, pregnant woman (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon)--who is afraid to let her father (Giancarlo Giannini) see her condition--by pretending to be her husband. Most of the story takes place in the old man's vineyard, and Arau makes a life of swollen fruit, grape-stomping, sunlight, and tan flesh that looks amazingly erotic. But there are plenty of sillier distractions, such as the sight of farm hands chasing insects with flapping gossamer wings attached to their arms. Reeves is terribly self-conscious, while stalwart Anthony Quinn is memorable as the damsel's benevolent grandfather. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Description
After returning from World War II, a young G.I. (Keanu Reeves) finds he has little in common with the wife he left behind. Disillusioned, he heads north to work as a travelling salesman where he meets the daughter (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon) of a wealthy vineyard owner (Giancarlo Giannini). On her way home, she is unmarried and pregnant. The young man gallantly offers to help by posing as her husband for one night, unaware that doing so will change both of their lives forever.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful! They don't make them like this anymore........2007-06-10
Do not pay attention to all those negative comments. This movie is simply a delight to watch. The story, the photography and the music are simply beautiful. I've watched it several times and continue to enjoy it. The spreading of the heat on the grapes with the butterfly-like wings and the grape stumping are my favorite scenes.
Great Movie.......2007-06-02
Hubby saw this 1st and then insisted I watch too! Glad I did!! It is an excellent movie, despite views posted by others. It has depth, great photography and just a general all around GREAT movie. I loved it!
Absolutely fantastic.......2007-05-18
The first time I watched this movie was at the theater. I thought the scenery had been painted. After all, no where on earth looks like that, right? Then I went to Napa for myself and, surprise!
I watch this movie a few times every year. The scenery is beautiful but so is the story. What orphan wouldn't want to be part of this wine-producing family? The grandfather is the star of the movie in my opinion. The female lead is luminous. Keannu's understated performance is well-suited to the character of a veteran shell-shocked from war and finding out that his war bride didn't care enough to read all the letters he sent her during the war.
If you want to know the definition of chivalry, watch and learn.
One of my two favorite movies of all time. I suddenly feel like going home, turning out the lights, snuggling up to my wife on the couch, and watching this work of art another time! I suggest you do the same.
So Romantic!.......2007-05-17
This movie is so romantic. Keanu Reeves is gorgeous. The Mexican family in this movie is such a treat to watch. I love the family dynamics and the fact that poor Keanu has no family and he wants to belong. The scenery of the vynard is spectacular.
Wonderful Love Story...........2007-04-28
Keanu Reeves is a World War II veteran and a traveling salesman on a bus when he meets a pregnant woman (Aitana Sanchez-Gijon) on her way to Napa Valley to help her family with the grape harvest. She needs someone to pretend to be her husband at her family's vineyard, the ex-soldier agrees. However, her father can sense something is not right about the story and tries to prove that his daughter is hiding the real truth.
This movie is a mystical romance based on a 1942 Italian film of the same name.
I really enjoyed this movie...although it did bring tears to my eyes.

If you think <I>Zorba the Greek</I> is a simple-minded homage to a man with a zest for life, then you haven't seen the movie. Basil (Alan Bates), a reticent British writer, comes to the Mediterranean island of Crete to revive a mine his father owned. On the way, he meets a Greek roustabout named Zorba (Anthony Quinn) and hires him to help, little suspecting that Zorba's exuberance will lead him to some dark and troubling places--frankly, if the last 30 minutes of <I>Zorba the Greek</I> are what it means to embrace life, some viewers will want to shut the door in life's face. But there's no denying the movie's ambitious scope and implacable force, even as it paints an alien and disturbing portrait of life in a Greek village. On top of that, gorgeous cinematography and one of the greatest film scores ever give this movie almost demonic energy. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>
Description
On the Greek isle of Crete, Basil (Alan Bates), a shy inhibited writer from England is befriended by Zorba (Anthony Quinn) a boisterous peasant with an astonishing love for life. When Zorba agrees to work at Basil's abandoned mine, it is the beginning of a lesson for the young man as he gradually moves from an observer of the world to a participant. This acclaimed classic co-stars Irene Paps and Lila Kedrova in an Oscar winning performance. "An utterly absorbing and sharply memorable film" (The Hollywood Reporter)
Customer Reviews:
Wow!.......2007-06-11
Basil, an English writer caught up in orderliness ("I write essays") meets up with Zobra, a Greek with a huge lust for life. Basil hires Zorba to help him restart a mine he inherrited, and Zorba teaches Basil to get more out of life. It's more than a typical buddy scenario - the lessons are clearly only one way, and they're not always good ones.
There are several strong points in the movie. The humor is frequently dark, and not sanitized hollywood. The Buddhist undercurrents and morality are shown, lightly told, but no over-preachy. And rather than present a purely rosy picture of "living large" the darker sides are also explored.
It's a great movie, certainly worthy of the oscars it won, and perhaps it deserved a few more.
Zorba the Great!.......2007-05-13
This film is, has been and always will be one of the 10 ten films ever made in my opnion. Anthony Quinn's performance is magnificent as well as Alan Bates' and Lila Kedrova's. I was fortunate enough back in the '80s to see him do Zorba at Ford's Theatre in D.C. And Lila was in it also. Sadly they have both passed away.
great film!.......2007-05-07
My introduction to this film was actually the wonderful soundtrack on vinyl, played while a small child, in our family living room. Much of this great music, with traditional Greek accompaniment, is often heard at Greek restaurants, too. I always had wonderful memories of souflaki, piping hot spanakopita and saganaki, associated with all of the songs!
It wasn't until some years later that I saw this great film, starring Anthony Quinn, as Zorba, with Alan Bates, as Basil, the young English writer he befriends and helps awaken to the sights and sounds of life. There is more to this film than meets the eye. For starters, it isn't all dancing and singing. There are also some very dramatic moments that I won't elaborate on, here, so as not to spoil the plot for you! I will say that the acting is superb, that Irene Papas and Lila Kedrova are fabulous co-stars, and the music will linger in your ears for days following your intial viewing of the film.
IT IS ALL A CLASSIC SHOULD BE.......2007-03-26
What can you expect from a classic? "Zorba" is simply excellent. Anthony Quinn, Alan Bates and Irene Papas are the big guns that make this an unforgettable movie.
Zorba the Greek.......2007-01-03
I saw this film when it came out in 1964 and I must have been moved by it because I decided to see it again after all these years. WOW!!! What a film. Discribing it is like trying to discribe dancing. Do the dance. See the film. The rest is just words.

This rousing, explosive 1961 WWII adventure, based on Alistair MacLean's thrilling novel, turns the war thriller into a deadly caper film. Gregory Peck heads a star-studded cast charged with a near impossible mission: destroy a pair of German guns nestled in a protective cave on the strategic Mediterranean island of Navarone, from where they can control a vital sea passage. As world famous mountain climber turned British army Captain Mallory, Peck leads a guerrilla force composed of the humanistic explosives expert, Miller (David Niven), the ruthless Greek patriot with a grudge, Stavros (Anthony Quinn), veteran special forces soldier Brown (Stanley Baker), and the cool, quiet young marksman Pappadimos (James Darren). This disparate collection of classic types must overcome internal conflicts, enemy attacks, betrayal, and capture to complete their mission. Director J. Lee Thompson sets a driving pace for this exciting (if familiar) military operation, a succession of close calls, pitched battles, and last-minute escapes as our heroes infiltrate the garrisoned town with the help of resistance leader Maria (Irene Papas) and plot their entry into the heavily guarded mountain fort. Carl Foreman's screenplay embraces MacLean's role call of clichés and delivers them with style, creating one of the liveliest mixes of espionage, combat, and good old-fashioned military derring-do put on film. In 1978, the sequel <I>Force 10 from Navarone</I> was released, but MacLean fans will prefer to check out the action-packed thriller <I>Where Eagles Dare</I>. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

A Long Time Favorite.......2007-04-02
THE GUNS OF NAVARONE has been a long time favorite around my house. We saw it years ago and have never forgotten it. I think the performances and the strong characterizations are indelible. We watch it whenever it is on TV even though my son has it on tape, laserdisc and DVD. There is just something reassuring about that film, something of value you take away each time you watch it. There are a lot of heroics yet there is dignity and honor demonstrated throughout the tale. I suppose it has now become a legend for all time.
A classic war movie!.......2007-03-08
I first saw this film at a British army outdoor cinema in Cyprus in 1962 when I was 11 years old. I have lost count of how many times I have seen it since. It still rates for me as one of the greatest war films ever. Great performances by all the cast: one of David Niven's best roles but all of them seemed to be at the top of their game. I own an earlier DVD than the Special Edition, so cannot speak to the special features.
A Thrilling yet Fictional Commando Raid.......2007-03-07
Oh, to destroy the heavy ship-killing artillery housed on an enemy-held island! Bombing cannot take out the site, and it would take a suicide plane loaded with explosives to destroy it. How about a commando raid? Intelligence indicates that the island of Navarone has a cliff so tall and steep that the Germans don't bother to guard it.
A group of commandos leaves in a fishing boat, and the miracles begin to happen. The fishing boat is stopped at sea by a German naval vessel, and the commandos manage to shoot and fight off all the Germans. And, to top it all off, the Germans situated at Navarone are not warned of the commandos.
After that, everything goes wrong that possibly can. The wooden fishing boat in which they are traveling gets battered to pieces by the storm against the cliff. During the arduous climb, one of the climbers breaks both legs, thereby becoming a liability to the rest of the commando outfit for the remainder of the mission. The climb is successful, but the commandos discover that they have lost their food. They manage to kill a German guard at the top of the cliff, only to fail to convince a German, calling the field phone used by that guard, that they are Germans. The search is on. The commandos belatedly link up with some Greek partisans, and make is just in time into a cave, from which they hide from German bombing.
Then, suddenly and unexpectedly, they end up in German hands. The German commander reminds them that they, not wearing uniforms, are not entitled to rights as POWs, and will be shot (as spies or saboteurs). He calls in the SS to torture them into divulging the location of the explosives, beginning with the man with broken legs, whose splints are to be rearranged. To make things worse, it turns out that one of the Greek partisans is a German agent, and that she has rendered the explosives useless.
Will the commandos escape death? If so, will the miracles continue and will they destroy the artillery at Navarone? I will not spoil the ending by revealing it.
Navarone does not appear in any atlas, and it takes a while for the viewer to realize that this account is fictional. It would be helpful if there was a disclaimer in the beginning of this flick indicating that it is fiction.
Excellent Classic Movie.......2007-01-11
Great classic WWII flick. Gregory Peck, Anthony Quinn, David Nivven.
Good acting - nominated / won like 8 acadamy awards...
The Legend of Navarone.......2007-01-08
THE GUNS OF NAVARONE have long been silent but the legend of this extraordinary and endearing film lingers on in our memory. They just don't make them like this any more. The script, the score, the cinematography, the actors and the characters they played are indelibly etched into the psyche. I often have fleeting thoughts of this film, happy ones, of the images, the words and the music from this WWII legend. The examination of camaraderie, the morality of killing and not killing, bravery, survival, betrayal, forgiveness and getting the job done are all integrated into a logical and emotional cohesive film that is both entertaining yet important in its representation of the extraordinary human qualities that can only be realized during war. This is one of my favorite films and the less said the better. I just savor my memories of it and get a little warmth in my heart.

<I>Lust for Life</I> is appropriately titled, for mere <I>passion</I> seems inadequate when describing this superb fictionalized biography (based on Irving Stone's popular novel) of Vincent Van Gogh. In a deservedly Oscar®- nominated performance, Kirk Douglas is physically and emotionally perfect as the tormented Dutch painter, whose life is chronicled from his ill-fated stint as a preacher to Belgian miners in 1878, to his Impressionist-inspired artistic awakening and psychological descent to suicide in 1890. Having triumphed with 1952's <I>The Bad and the Beautiful</I>, Douglas, producer John Houseman, and director Vincente Minnelli brought vigor and vitality to this blessed project, which centers on Van Gogh's stormy friendship with fellow artist Gaugin (Oscar-winner Anthony Quinn). Minnelli used an outmoded color film process and innovative camera techniques to vividly recreate Van Gogh's paintings, and he filmed on the actual Dutch and French locations where Van Gogh's mastery flourished. The artist's lust for life also fed his madness, and this film deeply understands the fine line in between. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Description
Vibrant orange sunflowers. Rippling yelow grain. Trees bursting with white bloom. "The pictures come to me as in a dream," Vincent Van Gogh said. A dream that too often turned to life-shattering nightmare. Winner of Golden Globe and New York Film Critics Best Actor Awards, Kirk Douglas gives a fierce portrayal as the artist torn between the joyous inspiration of his genius and the dark desperation of his tormented mind. The obsessed Van Gogh painted the way other men breathe, driving away family and friends, including artist Paul Gauguin (1956 Best Supporting Actor Academy Award winner Anthony Quinn). Directed by Vincente Minnelli and saturated with the hues of Van Gogh's sea, field and sky, Lust for Life captures the ecstasy of art. And the agony of one man's life.
Customer Reviews:
Great film.......2007-03-15
After waiting years and years finally Lust For Life film was released on DVD last year. Two things that I love about this film. Firstly the real paintings were used (not prints) throughout most of the film. They are beautifully shot closeup. Secondly the music score by Miklos Rozsa is sublime. When the paintings and music are combined, well words cannot do justice.
There are a number of scenes where a shot seques from Van Gogh actually painting one of his masterpieces to the painting itself. Again this is marvellous stuff.
Naturally the acting is good, Kirk Douglas and Anthony Quinn spark well off each other and rest of the cast are all good.
But I have to come back to the paintings and the music...
One of Douglas' best movies.......2007-02-22
A "must have." Really just beautifully filmed, with photos of paintings cut in with the actual locations where they were painted. Anthony Quinn is great as Gauguin.
I saw a behind-the-scenes clip where an extra (one of the locals in Arles) interrupted filming to say how much Douglas looked like Van Gogh - she knew Vincent when she was a little girl.
'I want to create things that touch people!'.......2007-01-08
Kirk Douglas - with a powerful portrayal of Vincent Van Gogh (1853-90) the greatest Dutch painter after Rembrandt, lost the Oscar to Yul Brynner ("The King and I") in 1956..
The film captured the artist's agony and everything in Van Gogh's pictures seems to be pulsating with life..Yet of the more than 800 oil paintings and 700 drawings which constitute his life's work, he sold only one in his lifetime..
"Lust for Life" begins in Brussels in 1878 where Van Gogh intent to do missionary work among the impoverished population of the Borinage, a coal-mining region in southwest Belgium.
There, he experienced the first great spiritual crisis of his life..He was sharing the life of the poor completely but in an impassioned moment gave away all his worldly goods and was thereupon dismissed by his 'superiors' for a too literal 'interpretation' of Christian teaching..
Penniless and with his faith destroyed, he sank into despair..
When his brother Theo (James Donald) arrives in Le Borinage, he finds him living in a little shack.. sleeping in the dirt and straw..Theo persuades him to return to Holland..
At home..he cut himself off from everyone, and began seriously to draw, thereby discovering his true vocation..Van Gogh decided that 'his mission' from then on would be to 'bring consolation' to humanity through 'art', and this realization of his creative powers restored his self-confidence..
A passionate man by nature, he needed 'love' and he wanted a 'home' and 'children'..He impulsively proposes it to his cousin Kay (Jeanette Sterke) - a widow with a son - who violently rejects him ( 'No..Never! Never!')
Late, in The Hague, he settled in after meeting with Christine (Pamela Brown) a prostitute who becomes his model and his housekeeper..He acquires technical proficiency confining himself almost entirely to drawings..
He visits his cousin Anton Mauve (Noel Purcell) - a Dutch landscape painter - who offered to teach him how to work with color and oil..
Van Gogh extended his technical knowledge and experimented oil paint in "In the Field", in "The Potato Eaters", in "The Loom", in a "Peasant Woman in a Red Bonnet"...
At Nuenen, after the death of his father and a discussion with his sister Willemien (Jill Bennett) he decided to leave to Paris..where he was introduced to the world of Impressionists like Cezanne, Toulouse-Lautrec, Renoir, Monet..He joins his brother Theo and met Pissarro, Seurat and Gauguin..
Paul Gauguin (Anthony Quinn) opened his eyes to the latest developments in French painting..
In Paris, Van Gogh hoped to form a separate Impressionist group with Gauguin, Toulouse-Lautrec and others whom he supposed to have similar aims..
He rented and decorated ' a yellow house ' in Arles and invited Gauguin with the intention of persuading him and found a working community of Impressionists..They worked together..each influenced the other to some extent but their relations rapidly deteriorated because they had opposing ideas and were temperamentally incompatible..
One night, after Gauguin leaves, Van Gogh broke under the strain and cut off part of his left ear..He was taken by Theo to a mental institution at Saint-Rémy-de-Provence in order to be under medical supervision..
At Saint-Rémy he muted the violent colors and tried to make his painting calmer : "Self-Portrait with Pipe and Bandaged Ear", "La Berceuce", "Garden of the Asylum", "Cypresses", "Olive Trees"..etc...
Oppressed by homesickness - he painted souvenirs of Holland - and loneliness, he longed to see his brother Theo in Paris who invited him to see a pleasant homeopathic doctor-artist Gachet (Everett Sloanne) with a passion for arts..But this phase was short : Feeling dependence on Theo (now married and with a son) and his inability to succeed and in despair of ever overcoming his loneliness or of being cured, he shot himself after finishing his last painting : "The Wheatfield and the Crows" dying July 29, 1890 in 'a bright daylight..the sun flooding everything..in a light of pure gold'..
Anthony Quinn received his second Academy Award as Best Supporting Actor - after "Viva Zapata", 1952 - for his 'splendid' performance as Paul Gauguin.. The film presented him as slow and careful.. pipe smoking and unfeeling.. face to face with the 'nervous' Van Gogh.. ('If there's one thing I despise, that's emotion in painting..')
Vincente Minnelli mounted beautifully a faithful account of the life of a great painter and manages to convey his 'genius' and his personal 'agony'..
Brilliant, Yet Painful Classic Offers Douglas' Finest Performance..........2007-01-03
"Lust for Life", Vincente Minnelli's rich interpretation of Irving Stone's Vincent Van Gogh bio-novel, is a film both compelling and repelling; in delving into the psyche of the artist (unforgettably portrayed by Kirk Douglas), one can see an untrained, unbridled genius smashing convention to open viewers' eyes to a world defined by passion; yet in doing so, we share in the growing nightmares and agony of his creative mind, teetering toward the madness that would destroy him, and it is an unsettling experience, to be sure!
This is a film so rich in visual imagery (with a Technicolor 'palette' that attempts to recreate Van Gogh's view of his world), that it demands repeated viewings, just to savor the details. From wheat fields 'aflame' in color, to night skies that nearly writhe in waves of darkness, the elemental nature of the artist's vision is spectacularly captured. And in experiencing the world through his eyes, the loving, yet uncomprehending concern of his brother (James Donald), and more hedonistic, shallow patronizing, and gradual disgust of fellow artist Paul Gauguin (Anthony Quinn, in his Oscar-winning performance), become elemental 'barriers', as well. Van Gogh wants to 'speak', but no one can understand his 'language', not even the artist, himself!
This film deserves a wealth of bonus features, yet the DVD offers only a very dry audio commentary, by film historian Dr. Drew Casper, which sounds like one of those college lectures I used to sleep through! MGM produced a wonderful documentary, when the film was made, about the production, locations, and reactions of locals, who knew Van Gogh, of Kirk Douglas' dead-on appearance and portrayal. Why this was not included is a mystery, as it provides the kind of insights Casper's comments don't!
Kirk Douglas never plunged as deeply into a portrayal as he did, in "Lust for Life", and the experience nearly crushed him, as he related in his autobiography, "Ragman's Son". His total immersion in the role SHOULD have won him an Oscar (Yul Brynner won, instead, for "The King and I"), and his bitterness and disappointment at the snub would haunt him, to this day. With the passage of time, his performance has only increased in luster and stature, and it certainly shows an actor at the top of his form!
"Lust for Life" is an unforgettable experience, not to be missed, even if this edition is lacking in 'extras'!
Nonplussed for Life.......2006-08-24
People jumping around like monkeys. Tall dignified monkeys, or lowly grimy monkeys, but monkeys none the less. Melodramatic, affected monkeys bopping around papery, evenly lit sets, with occasional exterior establishing shots. Stage acting? Silent film acting? Who cares. The activity of a scene ends and suddenly the lighting jumps 3 shades brighter, because they have inserted another film layer for a slowly cross-fading transition to the next scene. Yes, its one of those.
Its unfair to judge this movie by today's standards, and unfair to this review not to.
--Did Van Gogh cut off his own ear?
--Did he mail it to anyone?
--Was it all over a man or a woman?
Anyway, after the "accident" I found the decision to simply shoot Douglas from his right for the rest of the picture rather than create some kind of make-up special effect for his ear, a rather tasteful one.
If you are curious about Van Gogh, but not curious enough to read "Lust for Life" then watch it.
