The lovably ugly green ogre returns with his green bride and furry, hooved friend in <I>Shrek 2</I>. The newlywed Shrek and Princess Fiona are invited to Fiona's former kingdom, Far Far Away, to have the marriage blessed by Fiona's parents--which Shrek thinks is a bad, bad idea, and he's proved right: The parents are horrified by their daughter's transformation into an ogress, a fairy godmother wants her son Prince Charming to win Fiona, and a feline assassin is hired to get Shrek out of the way. The computer animation is more detailed than ever, but it's the acting that make the comedy work--in addition to the return of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, and Cameron Diaz, <I>Shrek 2</I> features the flexible voices of Julie Andrews (<I>Mary Poppins</I>), John Cleese (<I>Monty Python's Flying Circus</I>), Antonio Banderas (<I>Desperado</I>), and Jennifer Saunders (<I>Absolutely Fabulous</I>) as the gleefully wicked fairy godmother. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

I like this movie, but I'm giving the DVD a bad rating because this DVD forces you to watch two other pixar video previews and does not allow you to go straight to the disk root menu. Nearly all DVD's allow you to either fast forward using your chapter forward button or your menu button so that you can go straight to starting the movie instead of watching other promos. This DVD forces you to sit through Ben Stiller promote Madagascar... which you can handle once, but not over and over and over.

When it was announced that Tom Cruise would play the vampire Lestat in this adaptation of Anne Rice's bestselling novel, even Rice chimed in with a highly publicized objection. The author wisely and justifiably recanted her negative opinion when she saw Cruise's excellent performance, which perceptively addresses the pain and chronic melancholy that plagues anyone cursed with immortal bloodlust. Brad Pitt and Kirsten Dunst are equally good at maintaining the dark and brooding tone of Rice's novel. And in this rare mainstream project for a major studio, director Neil Jordan compensates for a lumbering plot by honoring the literate, Romantic qualities of Rice's screenplay. Considered a disappointment while being embraced by Rice's loyal followers, the movie is too slow to be a satisfying thriller, but it is definitely one of the most lavish, intelligent horror films ever made. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A true classic!!!.......2007-06-04

I just want to go on record and say, this is my favorite movie of all time! (Based on movies I have seen.) I saw this movie when it was first released back in 1994, and being as young as I was, I didn't understand it.

Flash foward to now. After buying and reading all of the Vampire Chronicles by Anne Rice, I was instantly heel-bent on getting my hands on a copy of this movie! I was able to watch it again, and I must say I believe this movie is a true work of art, and an instant classic.

The adaptation from the novel to the on-screen story is changed ever so slightly (omitting some parts as most book-to-movies often do) but keeps the whole thing flowing seemlessly together, while also maintaining the substance the viewer needs to fully appreciate the film.

The acting is beyond amazing. Many people called into question Tom Cruise playing the character of Lestat (I am not a huge Tom Cruise fan either) but I can honestly say he did an amazing job with such an important role. Having Brad Pitt play alongside Cruise as the character of Louie only caused Cruise to step his game up as well. Pitt was still fairly young in this movie and he shows a dark energy about him that gelled naturally with the movie.

Who can forget the young Kirsten Dunst, as the loveable and innocent Claudia! A break-out role for the (at the time) young star that propelled her to future A-list status. (What if Leelee Sobieski had gotten the part?) Dunst plays her role so well, you do actually forget that she is just a child in the movie! Add the incredible acting by Antonio Banderas, and you do have a young all-star cast!

The story itself remains true to the novel. A tale of lonliness, friendship, immortality, loss, grief, and acceptance. This movie never over-does the story to make it more "Hollywood," they just seem to let the movie take a course of its own and let the characters do the story-telling. This movie will leave you with many questions, as well as a feeling that everything is settled and the end course has been set.

This movie is well worth every penny you spend to rent or buy it. I whole-heartedly recommend this movie for any and all movie fans! A true 5-star classic.

5 out of 5 stars I <3 Lestat! I <3 this movie!.......2007-06-01

Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt dont suck in this movie so dont let them scre you off. Stays true to the book and characters. I really love Lestat but Rice is a ***** that sues her fans.

5 out of 5 stars The Movie That Introduced The World to the Modern Vampire.......2007-05-20

Anne Rice created the modern vampire with her novel, and the movie did it justice. Brad Pitt is definitely what makes the movie, he plays the role of the depressed vampire Louis perfectly. This the movie also has the very young Kirsten Dunst playing the role of Claudia, and she is an amazing actress for one her age at the time. The overall film is just perfect, from location to wardrobe, it feels like a trip through time. It's just a shame that the second movie wasn't as good as this movie. The movie "Interview With the Vampire" will go down in movie history as a classic and won't be forgotten any time soon if ever.

5 out of 5 stars A Masterpiece.......2007-04-10

"Interview with the Vampire" is bar none, one of the best vampire films ever made. Based on the first novel in The Vampire Chronicles, by Anne Rice...Interview is directed by Oscar winner Neil Jordan ('The Crying Game') and scripted by Rice herself. I remember the first time I saw this movie, 6 years ago, and immediately reading the first book. Not only is it a great vampire film, but it's also a terrific literary adaptation. Rice only removed things from the novel that weren't completely necessary and, in doing so, created a brilliant, passionate script. The film stars Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt, Kirsten Dunst, Antonio Banderas, and Christian Slater. Seeing these names doesn't really shout "masterpiece." Incredibly, every actor is suited very well for their role.
The film opens in modern day New Orleans, where a vampire named Louis (Pitt) has agreed to give a reporter (Slater) an interview. The story then jumps back to the late 1700's, where Louis was a 24-year-old, suicidal plantation owner who had recently lost his wife and child in childbirth. His invitation to death is open to anyone, but it is Lestat (Cruise) who accepts his offer. Lestat kills Louis and, before he dies, offers him the chance to live forever. Louis accepts. This offer means that Louis will live forever and stay eternally youthful, but must stay away from sunlight and must feast on the blood of others. Unable to take the lives of humans (something Lestat does with ease), Louis begins feasting on rats and other animals; When Louis ends up taking the life of a young girl, Lestat turns her into a vampire and she becomes Claudia (Dunst), the daughter/lover of Louis and Lestat. Louis and Claudia become a kind of Romeo & Juliet type, but they remain complete opposites. Claudia is more like Lestat, deadly and cruel...Odd, since she hates Lestat. Jumping ahead a bit, Louis and Claudia eventually end up in Europe where they meet Armand (Banderas), the self-proclaimed "oldest living vampire" and head of a theatre troupe called The Theatre de Vampyre. I don't want to say much more about the plot to avoid spoilers. When Cruise was cast as Lestat, Rice publicly critisized the decision but later recanted her comments when she saw the film. On the DVD, in the bonus features, she rants about how good Cruise was. And he is incredible, this is one of his best performances. I've only read the first book (I'm currently reading "The Vampire Lestat"), but Cruise captures this character so well. He's charismatic, good-looking, but capable of being cruel and evil as well. Pitt delivers one of his best performances too as Louis. Louis is a complex character, who needs to a complex performance to really capture him. Pitt handled that completely; Watch his eyes throughout the film and watch how they go from young and youthful to world weary and sad. Dunst, who was thirteen when she made the film (I think), also delivers a spectacular performance. Since the character begins as a child and, by the end of the film, is still a child but with an adult mind; Dunst showed incredibly maturity in the role. Few child actors could have captured the emotion she did. I can not rave enough about this movie. Vampire/Dracula movies are the most cliched and overly used stories out there, but "Interview with the Vampire" is bursting with originality. It's not a horror film, despite it's subject matter. It's really a drama and much of Louis's story is heartbreaking. The gothic look that Jordan gave the film works very well to set the tone and atmosphere of the film. Even if you're a person who despises horror films or movies about vampires, I highly recommend this movie.

GRADE: A

5 out of 5 stars An erotic vampire tale!.......2007-04-07

This is one of my all-time favorite vampire movies. The cast led by Tom Cruise as the vampire Lestat, and Brad Pitt as the vampire Louis does an excellent job of bringing to life Anne Rice's Interview with the Vampire. The costumes and sets are evocative of the respective eras the vampires live through, and the cinematography is lush and sensual, evoking the decadent lifestyle that Lestat leads...even Kirsten Dunst has a role here as a child vampire, and her famous line "I want some more" has been rendered immortal in movie history. The chemistry between Lestat [Cruise] & Louis [Pitt] is believable and in fact, they give one of their best dramatic performances in this movie. All in all, a cinematic treat.

The sensuous thrill of ballroom dancing collides with the hip-hop world of self-expression in <I>Take the Lead</I>. Antonio Banderas (<I>Desperado</I>, <I>The Mask of Zorro</I>) stars as Pierre Dulaine, a dance teacher who--perhaps to fill a void in his own life--decides to teach the foxtrot and the tango to a group of inner-city high school students who've been put in detention. The kids sullenly resist this intruder with his silly box-steps, but gradually succumb to the allure of passion channeled into physical grace. It's a lot of hooey, of course--the stories about the individual kids are shallow melodrama--but a movie like this isn't so much about plot as about dancing, and the dancing bewitches. The main problem of <I>Take the Lead</I> is that there isn't enough dancing; at least half of the personal struggle of the students could be jettisoned and happily be replaced by fifteen minutes of a sleek and sexy rhumba. Still, Banderas has a warm, ingratiating presence and can spout platitudes about dance with conviction; Alfre Woodard (<I>Crooklyn</I>, <I>Desperate Housewives</I>) has her usual charismatic authority as the school's hard-nosed principal; and the dance competition at the movie's end gives the movie the lift it's wanted for the previous hour and a half. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Description

Inspired by a true story, Antonio Banderas stars as internationally acclaimed ballroom dancer Pierre Dulane in the energetic and moving film Take The Lead. When Dulane volunteers to teach dance in the New York public school system, his background first clashes with his students' tastes...but together they create a completely new style of dance. <P><b>DVD Features:</b>

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Choice.......2007-06-08

This is an excellent dance movie. Antonio Banderas shows that with a little caring and a helping hand we don't have to loose our children to the streets.

5 out of 5 stars great values for kids and adults.......2007-05-22

Great movie to show to kids, teens and adults, dealing with values. Very entertaining as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great tango sequence!!.......2007-05-07

Loved the tango sequence in this movie. Banderas was a delight and the rest of the cast quite authentically NEw York!! Love it.

3 out of 5 stars OK Moves.......2007-04-26

Even for a "dance movie," Take the Lead is a little silly, but if you sit down to watch it without too many expectations, it provides with a decent amount of entertaining. Antonio Banderas is cute as a teacher who decides to use ballroom to inspire troubled students in a public school, and the competition scene with the three dancers is absolutely stunning--that alone is worth the rental price.

2 out of 5 stars Corny and predictable, but sometimes amusing.......2007-04-18

Cons: I'm dead tired of seeing movies about teachers from different backgrounds come to inner city schools and save the day with dance competitions and miraculously great hip hop dancers who turn into great dancers in other areas. This movie has been done over and over again but there were some really strange scenes. For example, the best dancer was not even highlighted until the end when she had the dance-off with two men (automatic elimination), people were arriving on the floor late, music was changed when in a real competition that would never happen, and how a bunch of kids managed to get in a private ballroom to practice, no clue. Too many things were unrealistic for me to believe in this plot.

Pros: I loved every minute of the rivalry between the sister and brother of the two deceased relatives on the principal's wall. Their constant bickering and snarling at each other made for great entertainment, although predictable, but cute nonetheless. Personally, I wish the movie was just about those two and the dancing was left out.

This movie was more like a comedy than a dance movie, but I'm always pleased to see Antonio Banderas in anything. I don't think he's ever not been cool in his whole life. Charisma oozes off of that guy. I was also pleased to see how "Moesha's brother" has grown over the years. He turned out quite handsome. I liked all the characters in the movie, just not the actual movie.

Salma Hayek makes up for many bad movies with her fierce performance in this sumptuous film. Hayek plays the Mexican surrealist painter Frida Kahlo, whose tempestuous life with her unfaithful husband, muralist Diego Rivera (Alfred Molina), drives the story of <I>Frida</I>. Maverick director Julie Taymor (<I>Titus</I>, the Broadway stage production of <I>The Lion King</I>) pulls out a wealth of gorgeous visuals to capture everything from the horrific bus accident that damaged Kahlo's spine to her and Rivera's trip to New York City, where Rivera's political leanings ruptured a commission from the Rockefeller family. Though the script spends too much time telling us how great Frida's painting is (rather than trusting in the power of the images themselves), Taymor's dynamic energy and Kahlo's forceful personality give <I>Frida</I> genuine emotional impact. The superb cast includes Roger Rees, Valeria Golino, Ashley Judd, Geoffrey Rush, Antonio Banderas, and Edward Norton. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

5 out of 5 stars PHENOMENAL!.......2007-05-30

salma hayek is BRILLIANT and julie taymor needs to make more films! absolutely stunningly gorgeous film with vibrant colors. the film may not be in spanish, but the culture is certainly made apparant through the visual aspects of this film. one of my all-time favorites! everyone must own this film! especially those who are fans of the artist herself - frida.

3 out of 5 stars is her art as forgettable as this movie?.......2007-05-12

she painted alot of pictures, and she married a famous artist, and she had a mustache, and theres alot of nice music. the film is vastly less important than it thinks it is; i dont know enough about its subject to determine if thats fair ...

3 out of 5 stars Whitewash.......2007-03-13

Frida is a cinematic whitewash of the real Frida Kahlo who was both physically beautiful and spiritually ugly. She was regarded by many of her fellow artists as being a "despicable cur." This movie presents a sanitized version of Kahlo's life and left out much of what was an oftentimes ugly personal life.

Frida Kahlo was a great artist and a horrible person. This movie fails to present the latter part of her personality and it suffers because of that deficiency.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty Yet Pretty Unattractive.......2007-03-06

Frida is a visually attractive, yet over the top glamorization of egocentric, self-righteous artists that just click. Besides the fact that the film tries really hard to come off as artsy, Hayek's acting shows too much effort and the continuously very short sequences have a TV sit-com feel.

Hollywood loves taking stories like these and making lives that are degenerate look like sacrifices for noble causes be it art, politics or love. In the end Kahlo and Rivera were great artists and poor humanitarians, with a penchant for stupidity. From this movie you'd think that's a wonderful thing.

It must be hard to make movies about artists because there are so few that are that good. Pollock, Vincent And Theo, Basquiat, Lust For Life, Modigliani, Surviving Picasso all were enjoyable films in degrees; but they all focused on and romanticized some of the worst aspects of the artists' lives like egotism, womanizing, alcoholism, mental illness, and drug addiction, and rarely show the more vulnerable weakness's that was the cause of the problems. The characters in all those movies just end up seeming like two-dimensional modern cliches of what we expect from artists. Frida is yet another example of that but one of the poorer ones yet.

3 out of 5 stars Vanity effort at best.......2007-03-05

This has all the story elements of a great movie: a talented and outspoken woman painter; her relationship with Diego Rivera, Leon Trotsky, and others; Mexico from the 1920s-1950s; the Rockefellers; communism; more.

Unfortunately, in the outspoken and dramatic hands of Salma Hayek, Frida Kahlo's story becomes a mediocre soap opera. Hayak shows her breasts a few times to keep the boys interested; there are some lesbian interludes to show Frida's bisexual side; Diego comes and goes and has sex with everyone he can. Hayak plays it as a modern and brash young woman full of herself and the world.

I thought we might learn about: Mexico in the 1920s-30s and the communist influence there; Frida's art; Rivera's art; other artists; art & communism; Frida's family; Rivera's family; Frida's motivations. We get a little of this but it mostly revolves around blood and sex.

The script is TV-grade, with dramatic pauses and shallow talk. The direction is weak and distracting, especially when collages are used to depict places and events.

There are other movies about Frida. See one of them.

After more than a decade of false starts and several potential directors, the popular Andrew Lloyd Webber/Tim Rice musical finally made it to the big screen with Alan Parker (The Commitments) at the helm and Madonna in the coveted title role of Argentina's first lady, Eva Perón. A triumph of production design, costuming, cinematography, and epic-scale pageantry, the film follows the rise of Eva Perón to the level of supreme social and political celebrity in the 1940s. Like Madonna, Perón was a material girl (she was only 33 when she died); she was instrumental in the political success of her husband, Juan Perón (Jonathan Pryce). But Eva was also a supremely tragic figure whose life was essentially hollow at its core despite the lavish benefits of her nearly goddess-like status. The film has a similar quality--it's visually astonishing but emotionally distant, and benefits greatly from the singing commentary of Ché (Antonia Banderas), who serves as a passionate chorus to guide the viewer through the elaborate parade of history. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Savior in the Eyes of Argentina.......2007-05-01

Evita is a historically relevant musical about a woman named Evita Peron who, in the early twentieth century, rose to the top and became a significant influence to the people of Argentina. She started her life out on the lowest ranks of society, an outcast in her own right, she slowly rose her way up to become a national figure in the political spectrum. I thought it was a very well made movie with a great deal of historical accuracies incorporated into it. Madonna was an excellent choice for casting. This movie has an excellent entertainment value while also incorporating historical value into it!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific musical.......2007-04-26

Evita is the best contemporary historical musical out there. Madonna shines in this film, as does Antonio Bandaraz. Anyone who doesn't appreciate Evita, obviously doesn't know their history.

My one complaint is that the DVD has NO extra features! There really is no point in purchasing the DVD over the VHS unless you want to be able to flip through the chapters or care about wide screen. I would have liked to see some director's commentary as well as an interview with Madonna. Some historical notes would have been nice too.

3 out of 5 stars Original and flawed.......2007-04-18

Evita is not really a musical. It is an uneasy combination of tableau and opera. There is no spoken dialogue. It is worth seeing just for the great costumes and production values and the exquisite cinematography. Crowd scenes are well staged and exciting. There are also some great dance scenes. With powerful voices and a convincing star this could have been an extraordinary film. However, with the exception of Antonio Banderas, the singing is surprisingly thin and weak. Jonathan Pryce as Juan Peron gives a fine understated performance, but Madonna is miscast: past her prime and out of her depth. The first rule of acting is "look good on screen" and unfortunately she doesn't. Gaunt and sallow, with garish makeup and inexplicably bloodshot eyes, she cuts an unconvincing and depressing figure. As he did in Cats, Andrew Lloyd Webber wrote one great song and a whole lot of junk. Sequences of rock music here and there are jarring and anachronistic.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2007-04-16

I haven't heard the original cast recording so I can't compare this to it but, I think this is a very good movie/musical. Madonna and Antonio Banderas did a great job! The music is really good. This musical is not as good as The Phantom of the Opera but it is hard to be better than Phantom. You MUST see EVITA!

5 out of 5 stars Banderas and Madonna are in top form in this great film........2007-04-15

This masterpiece of film-making needs re-evaluation since in hindsight it can be seen for the superb and masterful work of art and entertainment that it is. I have now seen the film three times and each time I am amazed that this film has not been recognized widely for its considerable attributes.

How does a director convey the oppressive nature of Fascism in a musical? Alan Parker succeeds wonderfully through his use of a muted brown, beige, black, and vanilla color range. He does it through the wonderful photography of riots, poverty, wealth, militarism, and the signs and symbols of power. The cinematography in this film is great. The art direction is super. The editing is perfect. It is a mystery to me why this film wasn't more appreciated by the public.

I think one reason is that folks don't know history and understand the rise of fascism in Germany, Italy, Spain, and Argentina in the 1930s and 1940s. Peron's brand of fascism was threatening to the oligarchy in Argentina that had ruled a nation of farmers and cowboys and peasants. Thus there is no clear picture of good guys and bad guys in the film. At times Eva's appeals to the poor and underserved, the establishment of her foundation, and her ability to communicate with the masses puts her in the role of saint. However, the extortion of the rich to pay for her charities and thus maintain the popularity of Peron is a shrewed political power play.

Madonna is super in this film. Her acting is not naturalistic because she is playing an over-the-top diva and saint. It is Antonio Banderas who gives us a running commentary thorughout the film that continually grounds the viewer in the facts and the actions in this opera.

One last comment: there are very few songs that have the power of Webber and Rice's Don't Cry for Me Argentina. Madonna's performance is spotless when she sings this from her balcony to the crowd below.

This unbearable quartet of stories was written and directed by hot filmmakers Quentin Tarantino (<I>Pulp Fiction</I>), Robert Rodriguez (<I>El Mariachi</I>), Allison Anders (<I>Gas Food Lodging</I>), and Alexandre Rockwell (<I>In the Soup</I>), which only proves that even the smart guys can really blow it sometimes. The anthology is linked by the hotel in which all the events are taking place, and by Tim Roth as a bellboy flitting from scene to scene. Nobody overcomes the insufferable air of self-congratulation that permeates this exercise in forced hipness. With Bruce Willis, Madonna, Lili Taylor, Ione Skye, Jennifer Beals, and Antonio Banderas. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars More Of A Pet Project Than True Cinema ...But Still ..........2007-06-10

An anthology of short films bound by one character is what you'll find in FOUR ROOMS. And all of the shorts are directed by four different directors with decidedly four different styles that overlap one another via Ted the Bellhop (Tim Roth,(...) .

It is Ted's first day on the job and it just so happens to be one of the busiest days of the year for the hotel (New Year's Eve). Relieving the old bellhop who'd worked there for fifty years, Ted is given sage advice that eventually falls apart on him (mostly related to sex, accountability, and keeping one's own council.)

The first episode is entitled "The Missing Ingredient." A clutch of witches inhabits a hotel room and they try to stir up incantations to revive a lost sexual sisters. Sammi Davis, Amanda De Cadenet, Valeria Golino, Ione Skye, Lili Taylor, Alicia Witt, and sex-pot Madonna round out the cast here. All of the witches brings a required item to the resurrection ceremony ...except one. She forgot to bring the sperm of a young man to add to their concoction. Enter Ted the Bellhop who finds his manliness much in need. This was the weakest of the four stories, failing to develop the tale or any of its characters, thus making the entire thing fall flat on its cinematic butt (even though there were plenty of nice butts and boobs in it). (...) director Allison Anders misses his mark.

The next episode is "The Wrong Man." Sigfried (David Proval) and his wife Angela (Jennifer Beals) are having an interesting New Year's Eve playing a rather kinky game of tie-up-the-wife- and-see-what-happens. Ted is brought into their midst and the sparks start to fizzle. Is Sigfried gay? Is Angela psychotic? Funny thanks to David Proval's history as a film bad-guy, this one had potential thanks to director Alexandre Rockwell.

The third installment is "The Misbehavers." A husband and wife played by Antonio Banderas (...) and Tamlyn Tomita plan to spend a romantic evening out but have to take their two misbehaving kids with them. Or do they? Enter Ted the Bellhop again. They hire him to watch over the boy and girl while they're away. Porno channels, a dirty syringe, flames, and a dead hooker all await the husband and wife upon their return. More of a slapschtick homage to (...), this over-the-top episode was directed by (...) director Robert Rodriguez -- who loves to direct Antonio Banderas (they worked together on (...) and (...) Probably one of the more laugh-out-loud endings of the four.

The final short is "The Man From Hollywood" directed by and starring Quentin Tarantino (...). At the end of his shift as well as his wits, Ted is summoned to the penthouse suite where he gets involved with a wager between two very drunk Hollywood types. Norman (Paul Calderon) and Chester Rush (Tarantino) have a bet going that Norman can't light his cigarette lighter ten times in a row without it failing. If Norman succeeds, he'll get Chester's cherry and expensive car. If he doesn't, Norm will lose a finger. But none of his friends in the room want to be responsible for doing hacking it off should Norman lose the bet. Enter Ted again. Offered a large stack of (...) bills if he'll do it, Ted numbly picks up a meat clever and...

But we won't give away the ending.

Seeming more like a pet project than anything of note, this 1995 offering is entertaining but sorely bland. The Jerry Lewis antics of Tim Roth are admirable (Lewis also starred in a film entitled (...) but the homage to comedy of days gone by felt forced or missing.

There are still laughs to be found but don't expect too many chuckles.

4 out of 5 stars cult classic.......2007-05-28

If you are a Tarrintino fan you must buy this movie. It features four different stories, all with different directors. Must have for any cult classic fans.

1 out of 5 stars Please for the love of Christ don't watch this movie!.......2007-02-04

I'm not usually one to be critical of a thing and not back it with balanced insightful information, but I wasted enough of my life with this movie to go that deep. I would rather have spend the 90 minutes hammering my fingertips flats with a ball peen hammer. Just don't do it. It's not funny no matter your "mindset" or "frame of reference".

4 out of 5 stars FOUR STORIES FOR THE PRICE OF ONE.......2007-01-18

Bellhop (Tim Roth at his best) vs guests.

The first two stories suck (minus one star) with Maddona as herself.

The third story is priceless.(Antonio Banderas at his best as the head of the Latin Kings)

The fourth story is a great sequel to a "Twilight Zone" episode.(Bruce Willis and Quentin play themselves)

Marisa Tomei at her best as a crack-ho.
Kathy Griffin at her best as the hotel owner.

Adult content.

Worth having in your collection.
Once you see this, you'll want to share it with your friends.

3 out of 5 stars A surprise and worth many viewings .......2006-12-25

I'm not typically a Tim Roth fan, in fact the work he did in Planet of the Apes was so convincing I couldnt ever see him playing an enjoyable or particularly likeable character. From the moment Roths character goes out to start his shift at the hotel you get a feeling this guy has the best of intentions.

Each of the "Four Rooms" contains a different story, with different characters, Roth being the only connection between the four. Some smaller plot elements tie the four rooms together as well. These are slight and might be missed, but help to make the movie more whole.

My favorite "room" is the Tarintino room. Once you see Quentin you know things are going to get really funny, really dark, kind of weird but always worth the price of admisssion. His is the last of the four rooms though.

Antonio Banderas' room is also great. Although hes not a major part of this room, because the story focuses on his two kids in the scene, his reaction to the mischief the kids get into is awesome! Very fuuny.

Madonna has a nice little role as the head of a witch coven. In their room they are trying to raise a goddess, and need some "special" help from Roth.

Depending on how you like your comedies this movie may or may not be very funny to you. I liked it becuase I thought it was a bit smarter than slap stick comedies...Roths caricature of the proper British bellboy is the absolute best part of the movie as a whole.

Not perfect but worth owning and worth watching again and again.

What happened to <I>The 13th Warrior</I>? Directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard), it's the tale of young Arab ambassador Ahmahd ibn Fahdalan (Antonio Banderas), who's vanquished from his homeland for loving the wrong woman. On his journeys he associates with a ragtag group of Vikings who are traveling back to their homeland to confront a nefarious threat that's cloaked in such superstition they're forbidden to speak its name. It is prophesied by a witch doctor that 13 warriors must confront the evil; however, the 13th chosen man must not come from the north. Suddenly Banderas is forced into the breach, somewhat against his will. More poet than battle-worn warrior, he must not only fight the aggressors but come to terms with the unfamiliar Norse culture. What follows is a vigorous and brutal adventure reminiscent of Kurosawa's <I>Seven Samurai</I>. Sumptuous and invigorating battle sequences fill the screen from beginning to end as the brave Norsemen battle insurmountable odds.

Sounds good. So why did this film, once known as the <I>Eaters of the Dead</I>, sit on studio shelves for two years? Presumably because of the thoughtless editing that trimmed down the film to its bare bones, crafting an actionfest out of an epic. It's not often that you crave for a movie to be longer, but <I>The 13th Warrior</I> could've benefited from fleshing out of its subplots and characters. On the surface it's good eye candy with some fine pulse-quickening moments, and Banderas and the accompanying cast turn in sympathetic performances, epitomizing camaraderie in the face of impending doom. However, if you're looking for a good thematic tale from the Dark Ages (akin to <I>Braveheart</I>), you may be disappointed. <I>--Jeremy Storey</I>

4 out of 5 stars A nice adaptation of 'Eaters of the Dead'.......2007-04-30

Far be it from me to quibble about the book Eaters of the Dead being better than its movie adaptation. However, I could easily have lived with a longer cut of this 'Beowulf epic'. Nevertheless, inspite of the evident & drastic culling of scenes, 'The 13th Warrior' remains a movie-goer's treat. Antonio Banderas continues to amaze me with his flair for subtle comedy. The rest of the cast too play their viking parts to near perfection. The action sequences and 'battle scenes' are down-to-the-earth raw (no CGI magic!), intelligently done, and immensely enjoyable. My recurring complaint being that the movie was about 30 minutes too short ...

Turn on your home-theater, kickback, relax, and enjoy the visuals for sheer entertainment value.

5 out of 5 stars Set in a time long, long ago.......2007-04-16

I just watched this for the 2nd time to be sure. Simply the best Modern era, Viking type movie I have seen. Excellent story, good acting, action and a touch of realism with just enough movie effects. Well done cinematography and good, solid acting all around. Some nice attention to detail. I liked the "learning to speak the same language" and prayer sequence as well. These scenes are clever and very well done as examples. Tightly put together. An excellent tribute to the loosely, historical action / adventure films of the classic movie era. If you enjoy this you should probably see the 1958 (yes, way back to 58) movie The Vikings staring Kirk Douglas, Tony Curtis, Ernest Borgnine, and Janet Leigh. After that "a more distant maybe" the Long Ships. In any case, if you like good, rousing tales of yore type movies, you'll like this one.

4 out of 5 stars Eaters Of The Dead.......2007-03-18

"The 13th Warrior" is the exciting film adaptation of Michael Crichton's novel "Eaters of the Dead." Antonio Banderas stars as an Arab exile conscripted into a band of Vikings who are asked to confront an ancient horror that is ravaging their homeland in the North.

As the Vikings and their Arab companion journey to the small village under assault from the mysterious but terrifying evil, the Arab, Ahmed, manages to pick up their language, impressing his companions in a humorous sequence that bonds him to his warrior companions. Upon arrival at the threatened village, the Vikings take on the challenge of defending it with true warrior gusto, while Ahmed, a poet by nature, must quickly learn the ways of a fighter to survive a barbaric and deadly opponent that may kill them all. Ahmed will become a man in this trial, aided by his rough and ready but good-natured Viking companions.

The action sequences add to the bulding suspense, as the warriors only slowly come to understand the true nature of their mysterious opponent through a series of brutal combats that attrites their numbers. Badly outmatched, the warriors make a desperate last stand inside the seemingly doomed village with their dying leader. Only a final act of heroism may save their lives.

This movie is highly recommended as an enjoyable and well-staged action thriller.

5 out of 5 stars Best Vikiling vs Cannibals movie.......2007-01-27

The 13th Warrior is definitely the best Vikings vs. Cannibals movie. If that makes it sound like a down market schlockier, it's anything but, offering instead an imaginative account of what the real inspiration for the epic Anglo-Saxon poem Beowulf just might have been.

Retitled (it was originally called Eaters of the Dead), re-edited, shelved and partially reshot by Michael Crichton, who replaced Graeme Revell's evocative world music score with an excellent old-fashioned adventure one by Jerry Goldsmith (part of which was used on Kingdom of Heaven's "Rise a knight" sequence), even in its final compromised state, it's a terrific adventure movie.

It certainly boasts one of the best action scenes of recent years, with a fiery night-battle between the aforementioned Vikings and hundreds of bearskin-clad riders. On the minus side, this set piece is so very good that the others fail to live up to it, especially the slow-motion final battle.

Antonio Banderas is fine as the bewildered Arab ambassador drafted into helping a group of Vikings defeat an evil that cannot be named and Dennis Storhi immensely likable as his translator/guide into the ways of the Northmen. Great fun, and a far from guilty pleasure.

Carmen and Juni Cortez will soon find out that their favorite bedtime story, "The Spies Who Fell in Love," is really the story of their parents. So begins this affable fantasy, a James Bond adventure for wee ones with all the trimmings. When Dad and Mom (Antonio Banderas and Carla Gugino) mess up their first mission after coming out of retirement, their kids must come to the rescue, equipped with some cool gadgets. The Cortez family gets involved in a bizarre plot hatched by a Pee-wee Herman-type entertainer named Fegan Floop (a wonderfully hammy Alan Cumming) that's as giddy as it is ridiculous. Needless to say there is plenty of derring-do concerning long-lost uncles, goofy monsters, double agents, evil robots, look-alikes, and energized chases. Did we mention the gadgets? Although Banderas and Gugino make terrific impressions, the movie is carried (as it should be) by the younger Cortezes, winningly played by Alexa Vega and Daryl Sabara. Who would have thought an action/horror studio (Dimension) and writer-director Robert Rodriguez had this pleasing family film up their sleeves? Rodriquez (who produced with his wife Elizabeth Avellán) seemed to be mired in cheesy horror films but here breaks out by capitalizing on the talent that gave him instant status with his debut, <I>El Mariachi</I> (1992). <I>Spy Kids</I> has plenty of verve but never swerves into potty humor (OK, there is one good potty joke) or wicked gunplay. All 7-year-olds should have a film as fun as this in their movie-going lives. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

Action packed and fun to watch. My kids loved it.

5 out of 5 stars Great kids movie.......2005-09-25

This movie is full of action, adventure and creative characters without being violent and scary. My two boys loved it. It was loads of fun for my husband and I as well as there is plenty of comedy that transends generations. We have seen Spy Kids 2 as well but can't reccomend it as it contains more violence and the characters were pretty scary.

<I>Original Sin</I> belongs in the "so bad it's good" category of languid potboilers, offering enough nudity, sexual chemistry, and far-fetched plotting to make it an enjoyable lazy-day diversion. Based on Cornell Woolrich's novel <I>Waltz into Darkness</I> (previous filmed by François Truffaut as <I>Mississippi Mermaid</I>) and set in turn-of-the-century Cuba, the film traces a tailspin of amorous obsession when coffee plantation owner Luis (Antonio Banderas) discovers that his American mail-order bride (Angelina Jolie) is not the plain wife he'd expected, but a beautiful, scheming thief who's after his fortune. The movie asserts that love is truly blind, but absurd twists of plot make Luis appear more stupid than passionate. Writer-director Michael Cristofer fared better with Jolie in <I>Gia</I>; here, he's made another good-looking film about beautiful people, but its plot just can't be taken seriously. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-05-13

I had been searching for the Original Sin DVD for a number of years. I had seen it once when I was very young, and it wasn't available in the UK. It may not be a life changing movie, but I found it very enjoyable to watch. Jolie and Banderas work very well together. A lot better than you'd think.
Definitely one to buy!

5 out of 5 stars Passion of Mind entertwined with Passionate Bodies.......2007-02-15

The film is well titled and is full of intrigue and mis-direction, yet it always returns to its central theme of over arching sexuality and attractiveness.

5 out of 5 stars Better than expected.......2007-02-13

I had seen the rated version of this movie, but bought the unrated version instead. Great Movie...!! Rated or not. Worth the watch. Angelina Jolie is wonderful in this movie. And Antonino Banderas-its always a pleasure to watch him.

4 out of 5 stars Sexy afternoon thriller.......2007-01-25

Please don't buy this film if you are a super film critic and wish to tear apart the weaker aspects of Original Sin. Buy this film if you love love and are fans of Antonio Bandaras and Angelina Jolie. It was quite a strech for these two blockbuster actors to do such intimatly nude scenes together, I have never seen either do nudity. They were beautiful together and sizzled the screen with their bedroom and tub love making. It was definatly an afternoon turn on to see these two great actors make love in such a realistic fashion it made me blush. Thomas Jane added more to the film with his bad boy good looks, these three actors were made to take their clothes off, they all had such awesome bodies, it was art on the screen. The plot was set in Havana, and shot in Mexico and you could really get a feel for the Spanish influence Antonio wore elegant panama suits and the wedding scene all the people wore beautiful panama draped white suits it really made you feel you were in Cuba, the shots of the cuban country side were rich with sensual colors and mexican people and planations were beautiful. The plot had many interesting twists to keep you intrigued. When I saw this movie I was extrmemly surprise that it didn't get a better box office review, but I am the kind of person that doesn't always like what everybody else does and this is one film I really loved.

4 out of 5 stars Original Angelina.......2006-09-11

I am really glad that I got the unrated version of this movie. It was worth the extra cost. I would put this at the top of my favorite Angelina Jolie movies list.

Hot Dawg! This one rocks!
