The unlikeliest cult hit of 2004 was <I>What the (Bleep) Do We Know?</I>, a lecture on mysticism and science mixed into a sort-of narrative. Marlee Matlin stars in the dramatic thread, about a sourpuss photographer who begins to question her perceptions. Interviews with quantum physics experts and New Age authors are cut into this story, offering a vaguely convincing (and certainly mind-provoking) theory about... well, actually, it sounds a lot like the Power of Positive Thinking, when you get down to it. Talking heads (not identified until film's end) include JZ Knight, who appears in the movie channeling Ramtha, the ancient sage she claims communicates through her (other speakers are also associated with Knight's organization). What she says actually makes pretty good common sense--Ramtha's wiggier notions are not included--and would be easy to accept were it not being credited to a 35,000-year-old mystic from Atlantis. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

1 out of 5 stars there really IS a spoon........2007-06-23

i just watched this movie recently. a friend of mine suggested it, because of it's "thought-provoking, positive message".

i only give this movie a 1 star rating, because there was no way to give it negative stars.

"what the bleep do we know" is the biggest piece of claptrap that i've had the misfortune to sit through since i read "illusions" by richard bach.

the "science" presented in this book is anything but. they've incorrectly applied scientific theories of quantum mechanics. only one of the people in the movie is even a professional physicist and *he* states his views are misrepresented.

the film makes much ado about masaru emoto's work with water crystals. none of mr. emoto's work has been subject to peer review nor does he use the scientific "double blind" method. in other words, it's pseudo-science.

all in all, if you like "feel good" pieces with no validity... this is a movie for you! if you think that reality is perception... this is a movie for you! however, if you like substance in a movie, don't even bother picking this movie up. if you are aware that reality is not subjective (yes, margaret, there really is a spoon), don't even give this movie a second glance.

p.s. will one of these people who creates reality PLEASE run around and solve problems of drought, starvation, etc? ~create a reality~ with some water and food in it, okay? and while you're at it... turn yourself into a big chicken or something similar. not that a big chicken would accomplish much, but we'd all get a laugh out of it, at least.

5 out of 5 stars YOU MUST SEE THIS FILM.......2007-06-18

I was curious about Quantum Phisics and this film really enlightened me. However even if you are not interested in the subject, this film is life changing and entretaining. It's more like a documentary, but really fun to watch. Only top scientists.

1 out of 5 stars It's a Bleeping Cult.......2007-06-16

Believe it or not, one of the "experts" in this film is J. Z. Knight, a woman who pretends to "channel" a 35,000-year old warrior-god named Ramtha. The films' producers, writers, directors, and a number of the stars are members of J.Z. Knight's "Ramtha School of Enlightenment" cult in Washington. Scientific American debunked this movie a long time ago. Check it out.

5 out of 5 stars What the Bleep!? - Down the Rabbit Hole.......2007-06-14

Just the idea that thought can alter reality was most provocitive and made believable by the presentation. The interviews were equally as exciting.

Description

WHAT THE BLEEP DO WE KNOW?! is a new type of film. It is part documentary, part story, and part elaborate and inspiring visual effects and animations. The protagonist, Amanda, played by Marlee Matlin, finds herself in a fantastic Alice in Wonderland experience when her daily, uninspired life literally begins to unravel, revealing the uncertain world of the quantum field hidden behind what we consider to be our normal, waking reality. She is literally plunged into a swirl of chaotic occurrences, while the characters she encounters on this odyssey reveal the deeper, hidden knowledge she doesn?t even realize she has asked for. Like every hero, Amanda is thrown into crisis, questioning the fundamental premises of her life ? that the reality she has believed in about how men are, how relationships with others should be, and how her emotions are affecting her work isn?t reality at all!

Art film and road movie collide for Vanishing Point, an existential car chase across the desert in a post Easy Rider</I> America. Barry Newman stars as Kowalski, a taciturn driver who bets that he can drive a new Dodge Challenger from Denver to San Francisco in 15 hours. He loads up on amphetamines and begins his odyssey through the contemporary west while a funky black DJ (Cleavon Little) turns the driver into a folk hero and broadcasts advice on dodging the cops. It's like a counterculture precursor to Smokey and the Bandit</I>, with the road as the last bastion of freedom and the DJ as a combination commentator and mystical guide. The slim plot offers a network of society drop-outs that aid the "last free Man on Earth" (as the DJ describes him) on his obscure but obviously symbolic quest while flashbacks paint Kowalski as a world-weary hero. It doesn't really make much sense, but the amazing car chases and excellent stunt work are stunningly set against the American west, beautifully captured by cinematographer John A. Alonzo. Vanishing Point is most assuredly a product of its time, the heady, anything-goes era of rebellion in the early 1970s. --Sean Axmaker

Description

Thrills, spills and a handful of pills. It all adds up to one of the most spectacular car chases in motion picture history! Barry Newman stars as Kowalski, the last American hero, who set out to prove that he can drive from Denver to San Francisco in just fifteen hours. Along the way, he meets an old prospector (Dean Jagger), a snake worshipper, a nude woman on a motorcycle, and a blind D.J. (Cleavon Little) who "sees" danger ahead in this super-charged, action-packed adventure!

"The book was better" has been the complaint of many a reader since the invention of movies. Frank Darabont's second adaptation of a Stephen King prison drama (<I>The Shawshank Redemption</I> was the first) is a very faithful adaptation of King's serial novel. In the middle of the Depression, Paul Edgecomb (Tom Hanks) runs death row at Cold Mountain Penitentiary. Into this dreary world walks a mammoth prisoner, John Coffey (Michael Duncan) who, very slowly, reveals a special gift that will change the men working and dying (in the electric chair, masterfully and grippingly staged) on the mile . As with King's book, Darabont takes plenty of time to show us Edgecomb's world before delving into John Coffey's mystery. With Darabont's superior storytelling abilities, his touch for perfect casting, and a leisurely 188-minute running time, his movie brings to life nearly every character and scene from the novel. Darabont even improves the novel's two endings, creating a more emotionally satisfying experience. The running time may try patience, but those who want a story, as opposed to quick-fix entertainment, will be rewarded by this finely tailored tale. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

5 out of 5 stars Stephen King's Best Film Adaptations Are Not Horror Films.......2007-06-24

This film is wonderful, although the ending is not at all what I had hoped for and I suspect that this might have been a part of why there were mixed reviews- beyond the comparisons with the book. It has a bit of Shawshank in it and some great actors that are familiar to King and Hanks best work.

5 out of 5 stars Throught provoking.......2007-06-24

Usually, i dont like prison movies, but with Good ol Tom Hanks in the lead and the supernatural aspect Green Mile is an exception. This movie is sickening at times (the electrocution) Uplifting (the healings) It is a death row movie. This cast and crew do a great job. the special effects are great. The End gives the viewer something to think about at least it did me.

5 out of 5 stars good book.......2007-06-06

Do you know what it's like to get blamed for something you never did, well this book THE GREEN MILE takes that to the extreme when John Coffey a miracle from God is accused for the rape and murder of two little girls. He really was trying to use the powers God gave him to heal the wounded or as he would say, "take it back." John found the little girls hurt and wounded and he tried to help them but they both died in his arms and that's were the police found John holding the dead girls. Cold Mountain Penitentiary (the green mile) is where John Coffey was sentenced to die from the electrical chair, and this is where basically the whole book takes place. The main characters in this book are Paul Edgecombe, Brutal, John Coffey, and more prison guards. This story takes place over 80 years from start to finish. The problem was that Paul had to put John Coffey a friend, gift from God, and also an innocent man to death. Paul solves this problem by asking John Coffey what he should do because he didn't want to kill an innocent man nor a gift from God. Paul asked, "on my judgment day, when the lord asks me why I killed one of his greatest miracles what will I say, that it was my job?" John just said, "You just tell him it was a kindness you had done." Three major events that affected the plot were John being put on death row, Finding out that John could heal the wounded, and when John died from electrocution. My favorite part in the book was when Percy Wetmore a man who nobody liked squashed Del's mouse just to be a jerk. So once Percy left John healed the mouse and Percy came back the mouse was running around and Percy could not believe his own eyes. I believe that the message in this story is that you should be good to people so they be good to you. This way when you die your not scared because you knew you were the best person you could be. In this book there is always something happening to make you want to keep reading. I would make the book a little bit shorter to improve it but that's the only thing. If you are going to read this book you should like action and entertainment.

5 out of 5 stars The most perfect movie I have ever seen........2007-04-18

Ok, granted nothing can be completely perfect. But I never seem to be able to find a single thing to complain about in this film. It's based of what happens to be the only Stephen King novel I have ever read. While I love just about everything about it, the thing that always comes to mind is how perfectly every major role was cast in this film. Tom Hanks was definitely a wonderful choice for the central character. Nobody could be more perfect for the role of the gentle giant that is John Coffey than Michael Clarke Duncan. I'll never forget that huge reveal of what appears to be the scariest looking man imaginable until you finaly see his face and immediately know he wouldn't harm a hair on your head. Supporting characters are also well cast, especially those of Eduard Delacroix, Bill Wharton, and Percy Whetmore. If you haven't seen this movie I urge you to do yourself a favor and pick it up.

5 out of 5 stars The Green Mile.......2007-03-24

The pinnacle of Tom Hanks' career, under the direction of a Master.

    Description

Brace yourself for nonstop action and suspense! Sylvester Stallone races against time to lead a group of stranded commuters out of a collapsed tunnel 100 feet below the Hudson River, in director Rob Cohen's (The Fast and the Furious, XXX) Daylight. The ethics of the press are roundly slapped around in an entertaining if not always believable drama from director Sydney Pollack. Sally Field is the Miami reporter who is set up to leak information on a dead-end murder investigation. A sneaky government official (a marvelous, rubber-band-spinning Bob Balaban) provides the information that implies liquor distributor Paul Newman is under investigation. When the story runs, it uncorks a legal quagmire that puts the spotlight on presumably innocent lives. As the lawyers explain, the paper's story is accurate, even though it may be untrue. The details of the story are sharply drawn by first-time screenwriter and former reporter Kurt Luedtke (who later went on to win an Oscar scripting Pollack's <I>Out of Africa</I>); the film could be used in a Media Ethics 101 class. Newman secretly counterattacks in a clever plot to derail the process that quickly encompasses his jittery friend (Oscar nominee Melinda Dillon). Field's continuing ethical gaps--including falling in love with her subject--stretch the film's credibility. Then again, who wouldn't fall for Paul Newman in the Florida sun? <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

5 out of 5 stars An accurate portrayal of journalism.......2007-06-21

When this movie came out, I was a reporter at a daily newspaper. I went to "Absence of Malice" fully prepared to hate it. Instead, I came away thinking that it was an accurate and believable portrayal of what happens in a newsroom. To this day, I am bothered that journalists too often fail to understand the impact their words have on people's lives. Most journalists I've known prefer to insulate themselves from the public and never hear about the negative effects of the stories they write. I highly recommend this movie to anyone interested in how reporters and editors operate.

5 out of 5 stars Ethics are a good thing.......2007-05-27

A very enjoyable film and quite topical in today's arena of "fair and balanced" journalism. The impact of what is in print and how lives are impacted - perhaps even ended - make this a compelling film. Credibility is tested in some aspects but this is a lot of story to tell in a short period of time. Some shortcuts can be forgiven.

Put it in, put on the popcorn and enjoy. And then watch our "cable" news channels and decide whether the film's lesson was ever learned. Hint: No.

5 out of 5 stars Absence of Malice.......2007-03-19

This is Sydney Pollack's best film in my opinion. A great example of how politics, the legal system, the court of public opinion, and journalism intersect. First-time screenwriter Kurt Luedtke, a former reporter was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Screenplay. Also, a great example of the tragedy of unintended consequences. Paul Newman plays the leaned upon everyman who stands up for himself, and Sally Field as the eager yet naive twenty or thirty-something newspaper reporter who gets the story but at a personal cost. The climatic courtroom scene at the end is one of the most dramatic and well written dialogues in American film.

5 out of 5 stars One of Brimley's best performances ever!.......2007-02-24

One of my all-time favorite legal venue films, the single best performance was delivered by Wilford Brimley, during the short but climactic "Inquiry Scene." All actors rendered very creditable performances, and there were certainly no weak links. Perhaps the classic "getting even" film!

4 out of 5 stars An enjoyable revenge and justice tale..........2006-12-14

Paul and Sally are both fine in this suspense drama, in which an unethical prosecutor unfairly uses both of the stars to achieve progress in an important case. Paul and Sally are attracted to each other, but when Paul's character needs to teach the prosecutor a lesson, he sacrifices Sally's job to accomplish his own vindication. It's just good entertainment, within a plot that shows the dark sides of the justice system and big media.

Filmmakers often remark that it's just so hard to make a bad picture that few would take on the challenge if they weren't so naive. Steve Martin's Bobby Bowfinger is cut from that pattern, one of those sweet, indomitable operators of Hollywood who seem to be descended directly from Ed Wood (of <I>Plan 9 from Outer Space</I> infamy). To resurrect his ramshackle existence, Bowfinger opts to film his accountant's sci-fi spectacular, <I>Chubby Rain</I>, about aliens invading in raindrops. The snag is he needs to attach action megastar Kit Ramsey (Eddie Murphy), an actor so paranoid he counts the <I>K</I>'s in scripts to uncover possible Ku Klux Klan influences. When his effort fails, Bowfinger hits on an ingenious scheme to film Ramsey without his knowledge, throwing his actors at the hapless star whenever he appears in public. Only Kit begins to believe he's being hounded by aliens for real, and runs hysterically to his guru (Terence Stamp) at a Scientology-clone group called MindHead, where people walk around in fine suits wearing white pyramids on their heads. Deprived of his star, yet not to be undone, Bowfinger hires a look-alike, Jiff (also Eddie Murphy), to fill in. The tone of the picture is sometimes flat, rather than deadpan, but that's nitpicking. The farce is quick and engrossing, and populated with terrific performances, especially by Eddie Murphy, whose dual role as Kit and Jiff showcases his character-building gift, and by Martin, whose Bowfinger, part con man and part would-be visionary, manages to capture your sympathies. Heather Graham's would-be actress cheerfully sleeps her way to the top like she knows she's supposed to, and Christine Baranski plays her shopworn method actor with myopic self-absorption. <I>--Jim Gay</I>

    4 out of 5 stars A Comic Gem.......2006-08-15

One of the great unheralded comedies in recent years, "Bowfinger" (1999) excels in its satiric attack on Hollywood filmmaking. Thanks to Frank Oz's razor-sharp direction, the inventive characterizations of Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy far surpass their current formulaic efforts. Heather Graham, Christine Baranski and Terence Stamp provide memorable support. The "Fake Purse Ninjas" finale is hilarious.

5 out of 5 stars The Last good Steve Martin movie.......2006-08-13

I thought the film was great. Steve Martin and Eddie Murphy have two different comedy styles but the movie was good. The storyline was original and Eddie Murphy's multiple role technique was good but not like the nutty professor movies. Chubby Rain and Fake Purse Ninjas are probably the more memorable moments in this movie.

    5 out of 5 stars FUNNY.......2006-06-30

This is one of the best of Eddie Murphy and Steve Martin I think. It is hilarious to see the charactors trying to make a movie with someone who doesn't even know they are making the movie with them.

5 out of 5 stars "I'll see you at the Oscars!".......2006-05-18

Whats so great about this movie is that it relentlessly makes fun of itself and works every minute. The film revolves around failed actor-producer-directed Bobby Bowfinger (Martin) as he tries to give his dead career a jump-start. After reading a script for a sci-fi film entitled 'Chubby Rain' that was written by his accountant (and friend) Bowfinger decides that this is the next big hit. He tries to get a famous producer to take it (Downey Jr.) and he's told (in sarcasm) that if he gets international action star Kit Ramsey (Murphey) to star then he'll take on the film. Theres only one problem, and the problem is Kit Ramsey. Kit is one of my favorite comedic characters, mostly because he's so obsesive compulsive and downright paranoid that everything he says and does is histerical. Kit believes that aliens, amoung other things, are coming to get him (and he has this obsession with the Laker's cheerleaders). That's important to the comedy in the film because, while it's a little thing, it plays big on laughs. You see, when Kit turns down the film Bowfinger decides, instead of telling his cast that the film won't happen, he tells them that Kit signed on, but that he doesn't want to talk to anyone about the film, he doesn't want to see the camera during the shoot, and they only get one take with Kit so they better put in all they have. In other words, he decides to film Kit without Kit knowing it. This results in Kit believing aliens are really following him and he resorts to hiding out in the 'MindHead' facility (a spoof on the ever popular scientoligy or 'Tom-Cruise-Syndrome') Without his star he has no picture and so Bowfinger shops around for a look-alike, and he finds him in Jiff (Murphey). Jiff is shy, Jiff is eager...but Jiff is stupid and so that makes filming with him a feat in itself. The film, from start to finish, is just downright hysterical with a brilliant performance (yes I said brilliant) by Eddie Murphey who masters two completly different roles within the same film. Heather Graham plays a young actress-wannabe who is willing to sleep with EVERYONE to get ahead, and Christine Baranski (my personal favorite) does a brilliant job of playing the 'professional' actress waiting for her big break. This is chuck-full of laughs and fun and is worth every moment.

    3 out of 5 stars GOTCHA SUCKERS.......2005-08-19

BOWFINGER is so shamelessly bad that you can't help but like it in spite of its self. While struggling hard for guffaws, the movie manages some chuckles along the way. Steve Martin plays the titular character, a hasbeen producer who thinks he's found the perfect script in CHUBBY RAIN, an alien movie penned by his accountant. He wants to get superstar Kit (Eddie Murphy) to play the lead, but Murphy wants nothing to do with it. Martin and his ramshackle crew decide to film their movie with Murphy without him knowing it. Murphy is especially funny in his dual role and Martin is Martin. Kohl Sudduth, Jamie Kennedy, Heather Graham and Christine Baranski etch fine caricatures in support. Not one of Martin's or Murphy's best efforts, BOWFINGER is still entertaining in its own silly fashion.

Paul Newman plays a racecar driver, Frank Capua, who steps out of his professional and personal isolation long enough to marry a single mother, Elora (Joanne Woodward). The two have a brief but happy life together with Elora's 13-year-old son, Charley (Richard Thomas), but it comes to an end when Frank goes back on the racing circuit and Elora assuages her loneliness in the arms of her husband's chief rival, Luther (Robert Wagner). Frank checks out, and Charley travels across the country to find him and effect a reconciliation. A touching movie (with some good racing footage) by director James Goldstone, <I>Winning</I> is about the real pain of people who have become used to a certain way of safe, arm's-length living, and who have to learn to get beyond it to find redemption in love and faith. Good performances by Newman, Woodward, and Thomas, who makes a terrific impression in one of his earliest roles. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars "Winning" is really Newman's picture all the way..........2007-01-17

Newman is a successful driver who marries a small-town divorcée (Joanne Woodward), soon after they've met... As usual, he devotes too much time to his career and ignores everything else, and, as in "From the Terrace," Woodward turns in desperation to another man--here a rival driver (Robert Wagner). Newman finds them in bed, and becomes estranged from her (again, as in "From the Terrace"), but after winning the big race, he realizes his life is empty, and attempts a reconciliation (the theme of the "winner" who's really a loser).

The relationship is superficially written, but Newman and Woodward make us care about it... Their first film together since "A New Kind of Love," it's their best since "The Long Hot Summer." They exude a naturalness, intimacy and spontaneous affection that one suspects come from their own feelings for each other... It is apparent in their first scene, where he is slight1y drunk, delightfully playful, and confident (but no longer unpleasant) in his attempt to pick her up; and she responds with smiles and applause at his tricks with a fireman's hat, but looks slight1y uncertain about this glamorous stranger...

Following their wedding, they sit on a swing, drinking beer from cans, talking and laughing quietly... She describes her previous loneliness, and he responds, typically, "Beer's a lot less complicated." They smile, she rubs his back and leans her head on his shoulder: these are people who really know each other, and who have attained a maturity about themselves...

Newman exhibits this maturity throughout... His loose, casual style, evident in "Cool Hand Luke," has given way to an almost complete mellowness... Perhaps because of the confidence gained from his directing experience, he has gotten rid of his mannerisms; and except for the intense determination he shows while racing, he's more relaxed than ever before... Although the script tells little about his past, there's a wealth of experience etched into his face, especially in his brilliant, silent reaction to finding the couple in bed--one of quiet resignation that suggests a lifetime of pain and frustration...

Newman has many fine scenes of quiet underplaying: his camaraderie with Wagner early in the film; his solitude after the race; his genuine warmth in the relationship with his stepson (Richard Thomas). The scenes in which they drink champagne and come home drunk together project for the first time in Newman's career a really paternal feeling--only vaguely suggested in strikingly similar scenes in "Hud."

    5 out of 5 stars Paul + Joanne= Beautiful Chemistry.......2007-01-16

I recently watched this movie for the first time ever, and was met with an interesting, compelling storyline and phenomenal acting. Paul Newman is top-notch, as always, making acting look like a walk in the park. His real-life wife Joanne Woodward was excellent, as well. I enjoyed the racing sequences in the film, but I'd say what grabbed me the most about it was the obvious love between Newman and Woodward. They'd been married for 10 years when they filmed "Winning," and in my opinion it really shows. They are at ease with each other...the love scenes are comfortable and romantic. Robert Wagner and Richard Thomas also bring fabulous performances to the table.
All in all, a wonderful movie.

    4 out of 5 stars Neat Movie.......2006-11-08

Winning is a pretty good movie. I think what I appreciate the most about it is the old footage of Indy (1968) It really gives you insight into the differences between the sterile modern races and the kind of race that men REALLY let it hang out.

The story, on the other hand, is a little wishy-washy and overly dramatic at times and Richard Thomas really comes off sappy and weird. And the plot stays a tad on the thin side with no REAL dramatic moments or challenges (barr one) that the characters face. Still, the charisma of Paul on screen is very powerful.

I guess my biggest problem is editing. Shots are used to build up drama that never really plays out. Some shots are held uncomfortably long for no reason and the race footage wasn't pieced together to maintain continuity with a lap around Indy. Shots jump all over the track. However, some of the camera positions are very Grand Prix-esk and give you a good sense of speed.

The racing footage alone is enough to prop this movie, but some of the fluff in between could have used some polishing.

    5 out of 5 stars Winning.......2006-11-05

Great movie. Around the time Newman started roadracing. I roadrace and see Newman on track every once in awhile. He's still a fine driver even at what, 82? Neat to see the old Indy and compare to the present. Jeepers, wooden Gasoline Alley... was that ever a good idea? Also fun to see the Brickyard Crossing as it was almost 40 years ago. Really hasn't changed much.

4 out of 5 stars Much under rated movie........2006-11-03

This film is much better than was realised at the time of release.
While the racing scenes are not up to Grand Prix or Le Mans standards, the above average story line helps that along.
Newman and Woodward give good performances, as does the rest of the cast, including Robert Wagner and Clu Galagher.
Richard Thomas is great in his first film.
Excellent vintage racing footage from the 1966-68 Indy 500's.
Among the cameos in the film are Indy 500 winners Foyt and Unser.

Steven Soderbergh's follow-up to his sexy thriller <I>Out of Sight</I> is an equally stylish but far more austere crime drama, a work of memory that mixes flashbacks, flashforwards, and ruminations on the present into an invigorating cinematic quilt. Terence Stamp is Wilson, an aging cockney criminal fresh out of prison who flies to Los Angeles to search for his daughter's killer. She died in a car wreck, but he suspects that her lover, a music industry mogul named Valentine (Peter Fonda), knows more than he's telling. Wilson is a fish out of water indeed, a cool, cruel London thug on the airy, sun-bright street of L.A., a silver-haired criminal taking on street punks and hit men with the relentless drive of a man possessed. It's like <I>Get Carter</I> channeled through <I>Point Blank</I>, a hard-edged revenge thriller steeped in sorrow and regret, trading the warmth of <I>Out of Sight</I>'s romantic heat for a more contemplative remove. Fonda beautifully plays off his cinematic history of 1960s hippies and rebels as a nervous, cowardly millionaire sellout in white cotton peasant shirts and a deep California tan. Luiz Guzman and Lesley Ann Warren costar as Wilson's "adopted" guides through modern L.A., and Barry Newman is excellent as Valentine's tough, terse head of security, another aging pro blindsided by Wilson's relentless single-mindedness. Soderbergh quotes from Ken Loach's 1967 film <I>Poor Cow</I> (sadly not available on video in the U.S.) for Wilson's flashbacks as a fresh-faced teenage thug. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

3 out of 5 stars A celebrated film worth one viewing but not much more.......2007-04-23

The Limey is celebrated as the film that gave Terence Stamp a starring role and as director Steven Soderbergh's last independent hurrah before winning the Academy Award with Traffic. It's a revenge drama (an ex-con heads out to Los Angeles to avenge the murder of his daughter) told in flashbacks and flashforwards. I've read dozens of reviews on Amazon and on the Amazon-owned movie database website, and I was surprised to notice how often the analogy of a deck of cards was employed in descriptions of the movie. Fans celebrate the film for its agile flipping through a deck of cards, for the fluidity of time in the storyline.

I'm a dissenting voice, and no, I didn't not like the movie because I'm not "film-savvy." It is a beautiful Los Angeles piece which portrays the seedy underside and self-centered social climbing of the city of glitter. Henry Fonda, Terence Stamp, Luis Guzman, and the supporting cast are all excellent. The plot is simple and weak, and the jumbling of time does not make up for what the plot is lacking, The dialog is flat. The viewer is distracted by the camera angles and the use of music which swells over the dialog.

    5 out of 5 stars I loved this film.......2006-05-02

I bought this cheap off amazon or ebay and was very happy to see it. I wish I had seen it on the big screen but those are days gone by. Peter Fonda was good in this movie as was the whole cast. Terence Stamp is outstanding and I like the way he talks. This movie plesantly suprised me.

    5 out of 5 stars SODERBERGH'S FINAL INDIE HOORAH.......2005-10-06

This was STEVEN SODERGBERGH'S last Indie Hoorah before he becam the OSCAR winning director of TRAFFIC. I absolutley love this movie. TERRENCE STAMP gives on of the best performances of his movie career as WILSON a career criminal who comes to AMERICA to avenge his dead daughter. The entire cast is exellent, and I love the editing trick (particularly splicing in clips from STAMP'S first movie, POOR COW, in flashback scenes). PETER FONDA is just as great as VALENTINE the sleazy record producer. This is a definate must see for film buffs.

5 out of 5 stars The push that Soderbergh needed towards greatness.......2005-09-25

I will not pretend this is not my favorite American film ever, it is. I first saw this in the initial theatrical release in 1999. This is the film that made me change my major from marketing to film, and change my goals in business, and life. Now that's an impact on at least one viewer. :-) This is also the film, that I believe pushed Director Steven Soderbergh over the cusp of greatness. Already with an impressive body of work in "Sex, Lies, and Videotape", "Gray's Anatomy", and the outstanding thriller "Out of Sight", here the director applies the sum of his education, and gives you the the single most innovative revenge/crime thriller in American film.

I will touch on the plot briefly as far better writers than I already have well covered it dozens of times over. Terrance Stamp portrays career con Wilson, a cockney Brit who travels to L.A. upon his release to get answers concerning the suspicious "accidental" death of his estranged daughter. Upon arriving he makes contact with his daughters friend Eduardo, wonderfully portrayed by the usually underutilized Luis Guzman, and, voice/acting coach played by Lesley Ann Warren. After cutting through some henchman types who had recently come in contact with Wilson's child, his path of revenge leads to aging 60's icon, record producer Terry Valentine. Valentine is portrayed by the legendary Peter Fonda, who is at his most animated, and sleazy best as the cowardly Valentine.

Everybody in this film is absolutly terrific which is typical of a Soderbergh cast who seems to just bring the best out of a cast like nobody else. One cast member who gets no notice in any of the reviews I have seen is Melissa George who in haunting flashbacks, and Wilson's imagination portrays his daughter Jenny. I cannot give this young lady enough credit for giving such a revealing face to a character only seen in memory, with no voice, with no dialouge. She is beautiful, meloncholy, and unforgettable and manages without ever speaking to give somekind of voice to the voiceless along with another young actress named Michela Gallo who does duties as the young child of Wilson's memories.

The direction of Sodergergh, and most importantly his cutting of the film alongside editor Sarah Flack is imaginitive, and daring. The cut is as chaotic as the memories of a faded conman, who time passed by so long ago would be, yet the direction of this cut is nothing short of masterful. Much like the era the antagonist/protagonist saw thier heyday in, Soderbergh weaves the surreal, with the very real, advances the story, and studies his "hero" in ways that I had never imagined before seeing "The Limey". This film could not have been made without Stamp, and Soderbergh has said as much before. The icon easily outperformed any and every actor in 1999, and got nothing in the way of nominations for this achievement, which I still think a travesty. This is a film with excellent dialouge, but never relies on dialouge to explain, or advance, or develop. The breadth of Wilson's development in our eyes is done for just that, our eyes. Stamp's face, his eyes, his mouth, his body language tell us all we ever need to know. It seems that everybody looks at this as a crime thriller, but really this is human drama, and character study at it's finest.

I've followed Soderbergh for many years, and this was a really fun step in his progession to the director who will soon be tackling Che Guavera in an epic that I had onced hoped to make. But I won't hold it against him :-)

If you want a great work, that you will watch again, and again....go to the top of the page and order this gem.

5 out of 5 stars I loved it , great to see Terence Stamp starring again .......2005-08-21

This film owes so much to the wonderfully intense performance of Terence Stamp . I don't know why he doesn't get more work . Only now after seeing a film like POINT BLANK do I notice the original influence . This is a revenge film but you cannot wait to see how it happens .

The film has an 'arty non linear' storytelling style , but is easy to follow . The film is set in sunny California , which seems to make things more sinister somehow .
I recommend this film and also another one like it , but set in 70's England called GET CARTER , which stars Michael Caine .
Both DVD's have good special features , which include the lead actors speaking in the commentaries .

For the price , you cannot go wrong .
You may find it hard to believe the same director that made this was behind the remake of OCEAN'S ELEVEN , but it's true .
If you like it , do pick up the POINT BLANK DVD as well .

    5 out of 5 stars The night was . . ........2006-02-22

I gotta tell ya, everything that happens in this movie that is associated with writer's block is absolutely true. It's very hard to begin a novel. At the begining of the movie, larry, who is billy crystal, is driving himself mad trying to write his next book. I'm ashamed to say that I've done the exact same things that he's done in the one opening scene. As for the rest of the movie; it is hysterical. Danny devito purposely used a sort of dark humor hicthcock style for this film. I also love the personalities of the two characters. Larry is the hyperactive, struggling writer who wants to be brilliant and owen is the dopey, bumbling, low-brow writer who wants to be brilliant. Every line in this movie is pure gold, I tell ya. If you really want to buy this movie, I say just do it. You'll have sympathy for writers and you'll also see a ecentric comedy that delivers on all the goods. Enjoy, fellow movie buffs!

    4 out of 5 stars Beware Momma, She's Not a Woman, She's The Terminator.......2005-08-12

Alfred Hitchcock made a great movie called Strangers on a Train and this very funny film is a sort of comic reworking of that same theme. Two people trade murders so there is no motive and the suspect creates an alibi, there is nothing to tie them to their crimes. Things go wrong however because one never agreed to do this in the first place. Danny DeVito and Billy Crystal make a great onscreen pair, but Anne Ramsey steals the show as momma, an overbearing and grumpy woman who's son wants her dead. This film wasn't well received in it's release but dark comedies almost never are. Well worth a watch if you never seen it, and if you have seen it before try it again you may like it better the second time around.

5 out of 5 stars Superb new transfer of a great comedy!.......2005-06-07

This should be advertised more even though it's exactly the same as the last release with one exception. It now has a beautiful new transfer and boy did it need it. As before it has a trailer and 4 deleted scenes, not a loaded special edition, but a beautiful picture once again enhanced for widescreen tvs. Believe me that this is the best you will have seen this movie since it's original theatrical run.

    4 out of 5 stars What a Momma!.......2004-11-19

Despite the dark story that lurks behind the comedy in this film it is entirely entertaining from beginning to end.

Larry (Billy Crystal) is a creative writing teacher with a class full of inept writers. He is divorced from a woman (Kate Mulgrew) who has taken his novel and "written" it herself and is now receiving all the glory. Larry is stewing. One of Larry's students, Owen (Danny DeVito), becomes obsessed with a murder mystery he is working on and he follows Larry around hoping for a moment of his attention. Owen has issues....his Momma (Anne Ramsey). The fun begins with a mistaken clue being taken by Owen to mean that he and Larry should criss-cross their anger and murder one another's nemesis and it all leads to a completely amusing journey into the dark part of a suffering mind.

Danny DeVito is the king of black comedy and here he stars and directs with a talented ability to find humor in the darkest desires. Along with Billy Crystal they complete a madcap comedy duo in search of some relief from those who taunt their insecurities. The stand out talent in this film is of course Anne Ramsey, who as Momma, will make you roar with laughter....you stupid poop! For you writers out there this movie takes a great look at the inevitable block that stares us in the face every now and then. Get ready to laugh and store this classic close at hand to re-watch time and again when your own heart feels a little heavy and you need a dose of Momma to ease the pain.

5 out of 5 stars Finally added this classic to my DVD collection.......2004-10-16

Really, how can you go wrong? Billy Crystal and Danny Devito in their primes. I still hear the old lady's voice in my head whenever I hear the name Owen. This movie is hysterical, both in situational and physical comedy. Devito and Crystal made a good team, it would have been nice to see them work on another film together. Owen's mother is played by the same woman who played Mama Fratelli in the Goonies. A great character actress, she makes you hate her as soon as she makes her entrance. Devito is wonderful in his portrayal of an immature man who stills lives with his mother and can't seem to stand up on his own. Crystal plays one of his classic type roles, similar to the Albert Brooks characters, the whiny and frustrated average Joe. A very fun dark comedy, one that every comedy fan should own.
