Groundbreaking on several counts, not the least of which was an innovative use of animation and stereophonic sound, this ambitious Disney feature has lost nothing to time since its release in 1940. Classical music was interpreted by Disney animators, resulting in surreal fantasy and playful escapism. Leopold Stokowski and the Philadelphia Orchestra provided the music for eight segments by the composers Tchaikovsky, Moussorgsky, Stravinsky, Beethoven, Ponchielli, Bach, Dukas, and Schubert. Not all the sequences were created equally, but a few are simply glorious, such as "Night on Bald Mountain," "The Sorcerer's Apprentice," and "The Nutcracker Suite." The animation ranges from subtly delicate to fiercely bold. The screen bursts with color and action as creatures transmute and convention is thrust aside. The painstaking detail and saturated hues are unique to this film, unmatched even by more advanced technology. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-04-04

While it is not plot based or known for a memorable and charming story, it is a wonder to watch. Music creates images in most of us, whether they be memories of something prior, or something conjured up from the sound. Fantasia is based on that idea. Listening to this classic music, set to such elegant and wonderful images is a treat. One of the best of it's kind. Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars A child's memories.......2007-03-09

This is the first movie I remember seeing as a child. I was probably about 7 years old at the time. I've never forgotten it, and now, after 59 years, I'm viewing it again. It's just as wonderful as it was when I saw it the first time, although there are a couple of "bits" that I don't remember from my first viewing. It keeps me company during my treadmill walks. It does a wonderful job of helping me to pass the time. It's a beautiful combination of art and classical music.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT BUT DATED 3 DISC SET IS NICE BUT.............................2007-03-08

I am a big fan of Disney films. The animated classics will be forever imprinted in my mind. I do have a huge problem with any censorship! Unfortunately, the people at Disney decided to buckle under to it, because of a few cry babies complaining about racial stereotypes in some of their films. I know I am not the first to say this, but really are these people serious? I am Italian and German, do you think I have not seen my share of stereotyping in my 45 years on this planet? Why hasn't Stromboli from Pinochhio been altered for it's depiction of an Italian? It seems we are very selective with what we censor..hhmmm!I don't mind it because I know the characterization is just that and it doesn't reflect the entire race! Please stop censorship of any kind especially regarding these historic works of art. You can not change history you can only learn from it!

4 out of 5 stars I'm a bigger fan of Lilo & Stitch! .......2007-02-17

I bought it when I was on my Disney kick -- was fascinated by it for like a week and then sold it on eBay. It's great for kids though!

5 out of 5 stars Fantasia will amazia!.......2007-02-16

Sorry Disney studios, but my heading was an actual promo quip for the FANTASIA theatrical release.
I was first introduced to the awareness of the Fantasia movie while in elementary school viewing a "prehistoric animation clip" narrated as a seperate dinosaur documentary. Later I learned it was taken from Walt Disney FANTASIA feature. When I finally saw the movie as a whole in the theater, I was mesmerized. "The Dance Of The Hours" sequence was especially memorable, since no one in the audience could stop laughing at the animal ballet antics.
Being a soundtrack collector, even as a young kid, I got the 3 vinyl album issue of Fantasia soundtrack on Buena Vista label, which included a program insert that was as wonderful as the movie. It even included a fold out long colorful poster which had been used to promote the re-release of Fantasia in the 70's.
Therefore I totally agree with people's opinions that this animated feature is relevant to interests of all ages, young children and adults.
I would listen to the classic movie soundtrack over and over, picturing the fantasies in my mind. This is a wonderful addition to any childs collection, whether soundtrack, movie, or both! Do not wait!

4 out of 5 stars Made an excellent gift for a horror buff.......2007-06-15

I bought this for my friend for Christmas who loves the older, pre 80s era special effects movies and TV shows. This was a little before his time, to say the least, but it was a great way of seeing where we've been and how far we've come.

I'd seen only bits and pieces of these movies over the years in late night movie marathons and cable, it was one of the first opportunities I had to see the entire movie from beginning to end. These movies are funny in so many ways, as in the silent movie era a lot of these actors were made up to look cartoonish rather than scary. I'd read that for movie make up Lon Chaney Sr. (and Jr.) didn't even use make up or prothetics but taped their faces and used hooks to change their appearence. There never was a "How To" instruction book on things, they had to learn by doing.

The only bit of criticism for this is that it's quite long. Don't think that you can watch an entire disc in one sitting. A little of these movies go a long way.

3 out of 5 stars Old Horror.......2007-06-07

This is a fine, cheap package of movies if you like the old Black and White horror movies. Most are seemingly low budgetted movies, such as "Attack of the Killer Shrews" where dogs are dressed up in ratty costumes and puppets are used for close ups. I for one enjoy these types of movies.

4 out of 5 stars For the true Horror afficionado.......2007-06-02

I'm a professional writer of supernatural thrillers. My Book of Common Dread reinvented the vampire, and my The Bell Witch/An American Haunting became the movie An American Haunting with Donald Sutherland and Sissy Spacek. Not only does my work demand knowledge of what's out there in print and on film, but I was also born just early enough to have caught a number of the films in this collection when they first came out. In most genres, a collection of works of such low acting and production value quality would be a waste of money. But we all know most so-called horror movies are second-rate Hollywood citizens right from the get-go. How many have won Academy Awards? Some of these are fun because they're so bad. Others are interesting because they have famous directors getting their start somewhere, mystery and horror writers of skill penning the dialogue, or actors who will later become famous. An occasional diamond is found among the zirconia here, but the real reason to purchase this collection is that it is incredibly inexpensive for what you get, and you can devour the cinema equivalent of nutritionless calories (like movie popcorn) for many nights of enjoyment.

4 out of 5 stars Cult movies , bad quality.......2007-05-30

All 50 movies are cult classics but the only thing bad is the sound quality, sometimes you just cant understand what the characters are talking about they should at least put subtitels, but thats not a big problem because the movies are fantastic.
It realy pays to have this movie pack!

4 out of 5 stars 50 Classic Horror Films for a Good Price.......2007-05-14

This is a nice package to own for a great price. The quality is good on most of the films. Some of the movies in this package are really good and enjoyable, and there are some that is not worth seeing a second time unless you like it. But like many others have stated this is a good bargin for this amount of movies.

I found out that there is a 100 Horror Movie Pack, and it includes most of the movies from this pack and others. Maybe that will be a good start for some of you who don't own any of the sets yet. So if you like classic horror, then you will love this 50 Movie package.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Classic.......2007-05-25

Wonderful classic featuring Lon Chaney Jr and Bela Lugosi. Chaney's sympathetic performance as the doomed Lawrence Talbot is one of the most recognized performances in the horror industry's genre.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection Of Classic Oldies!.......2007-03-28

Every family would do well to add this group of movies to their own collection, especially if you are a fan of Lon Chaney. The acting and special effects of this period are very well-done, even by today's standards...

4 out of 5 stars Horror Classic lives on!.......2007-03-15

Truly a wonderful package set of horror with "The Wolf Man" as Lon Chaney Jr. at his best and a true classic movie that will be remember for ages to come. Get this set for not only for "The Wolf Man" movie, but, for the other movies that come with it as well, which, are truly hard to find by them self...highly recommended!!

1 out of 5 stars the wolf man- the legacy collection.......2007-03-11

just rcve this disc last week along with Frankenstein- legacy collection. Both came thru loose in box and are scratched and freeze up, very dissapointing waste of money.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-03-05

If you are a fun of monster movies then this is a must. From the four movies "The Wolf Man" stands out as the best and the true classic. Very atmospheric it really is one of the best monster ovies ever made. Granted it does not have the special effects that you find in today's films, but the mood and atmosphere is there.
The collection is benefited by some intersting extras.
There is a negative- the transfer quality of this dvd is not the best possible- there are some still points and thus the fifthstar is dropped. However the viewer will enjoy it.

4 out of 5 stars Peter Watkin's WAR GAME gem.......2007-06-05

The 1965 BBC nuclear war horror/docudrama THE WAR GAME is the gem buried in this Mill Creek comprise of 50 movies, entitled,NIGHTMARE WORLDS.Typical of other 12 double-sided DVD offerings in this series, the movies range from very good to bogus to the max(with most in range of what were once-called great Drive-in flicks).Peter Watkins'THE WAR GAME,however,is acknowledged masterpiece which so graphically presented aftermath of a "limited nuclear strike" against Great Britain(in mid-60's as consequence of escalation of crisis confrontation between formerly powerful NATO forces and now non-existent USSR)that was banned by BBC that initially oversaw its production. The film is on DISC 5/Side B. It's in very clear to very grainy BxW.It is 48 minutes long and is scary as hell.Scenes depicting MEDICAL TRIAGE of survivors;peremptory execution of violators of Martial Law(from food rioters to mob-killers of military & medical personnel);and the autistic state of thousands of children "hospitalized" in refugee camps, are staggering in impact."This is NUCLEAR WAR,"declares the narrator in classic,British understatement. It is Nightmare World,
indeed;well worth purchase of the other entertaining "thrillers" to view a TRUE and still possible cause in The ultimate in Global Warming...

4 out of 5 stars Just My 2 cents worth.......2007-05-26

Pretty much what everyone else has said, it's a collection of wonderfully good & bad films, dating from the 1920s to the 1990s, some of the transers are fair to good, others are poor, but "worth every penny".

One complaint. Why do these comapnies insist on having their watermarks pop up ever 10-15 minutes for 20 seconds throughout the film? It's most annoying. And I buy DVDs to get away from that sort of thing. (And it's put me off buying any more from "Mill Creek"). And seriously apart from advertising it's pointless. My local community station shows films all the time where this happens. I'm assuming they just buy the boxed set and broadcast without clearance.

Only other disappointment with this set. One of the disc sleeves had the BBC documentary from the 1960's "War Games" listed. I got most excited. The film on the disc is "Flight 412". Sad.

Overall, worth getting.

5 out of 5 stars 50 Movies of Public Domain Goodness.......2007-04-18

Nightmare Worlds is a collection of 50 science fictionally oriented horror movies that have only one thing in common: they are all public domain and as such it is possible for them to be presented in highly affordable collections. I paid $21.99 for my set and that comes down to about 44 cents per movie. The way that movie tickets cost nowadays, you really cannot complain about this collection.

2 out of 5 stars Maciste Is 65 Minute Version, NOT 95 As Stated.......2007-04-12

I purchased this set for 2 films:

1. Maciste In Hell - The packaging & advertising for this set states that it includes the full 95 minute version of Maciste. It actually has the 65 minute version. The picture quality is also worse then collector's copies in circulation. Tremendous film, though. I'd love to find a print of the 95 minute version.

2. Mistress Of Atlantis - Unlike Maciste, this print is a moderate upgrade from the collector's prints in circulation, & is about 3 minutes longer. One of the very few Brigitte Helm films available to English speaking viewers. If you don't already own this film, & are a Helm fan, the box is probably worth the price, & heck you're getting 49 other films with poor video quality for free.

GREAT MOVIES
IT SEEMS THE HORROR ACTORS BACK THEN PUT THEIR ALL INTO THEIR CHARACTERS

4 out of 5 stars Great Horror Classic.......2007-03-15

This Legacy collection of "Dracula" isn't really as bad as most folks would think. Even though, the restored version of "Dracula" is better (cause all they did was "brighten" it up thats it), and they won the Rondo Award for it, and it is better than this version of the movie. However, dont over look it because of that alone. Its a wonderful set with other movies that make up for it, try finding the movies on your own and be successful!..trust me!, it would be very hard to do so today on DVD..so, buy the set on that alone..highly recommended!!

4 out of 5 stars The blood is the life.......2007-02-28

Bram Stoker's vampire novel has been remade dozens of times, but perhaps the best adaptation is the classic Bela Lugosi version. And "Dracula - The Legacy Collection" collects not only Lugosi's movie and the Spanish version, but three inferior sequels that are still moderately entertaining -- basically a vampire-lover's delight.

A solicitor, Renfield (Dwight Frye), is travelling to Count Dracula's castle for a real estate deal, despite the locals freaking out and crossing themselves whenever Dracula's mentioned. He soon finds out why -- the Count (Lugosi) is a vampire, who enslaves a mad Renfield to his will. Soon after, a ship with a dead crew (and Renfield and Dracula in the hold) arrives in England.

Soon Dracula has moved into his new home, Carfax Abbey, and is insinuating himself with the Seward family -- and especially with pretty Lucy Westenra, who dies of blood loss and is reborn as a vampire. Only the intervention of the mysterious Dr. Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan) can stop Dracula's attacks in London.

Then there's the Spanish-language one, which is virtually identical and was filmed on the exact same sets, during the hours when the English-language one was not being shot. It's incredibly good, and although it lacks that iconic intensity that Lugosi brought the English-language film, it's full of atmosphere and amazing acting.

And there's an immediate sequel, "Daughter of Dracula," about a beautiful Transylvanian vampire -- created by Dracula -- who comes to England seeking a way out of her eternal torment, now that her "father" has been permanently killed. But her sinister servant wants to keep her enslaved to her bloodlust.

Then there are two inferior sequels: "Son of Dracula," which is basically a whittled-down plot set in the early twentieth century, with an exceptionally wooden "Count Alucard" played by Lon Chaney Jr. He moves in next to an heiress's house, kills her father, and marries her, so it's up to her ex-boyfriend to save the day.

And finally there's "House of Dracula," in which the very popular Dr. Edelmen (Onslow Stevens) gets two requests for supernatural cures from some kind of miraculous mold: Count Dracula (John Carradine), and the wolfman Lawrence Talbot (Lon Cheney Jr). Talbot is suicidal over his transformations, and Dracula is secretly pursuing Edelman's vacuous nurse and driving the good doc insane. And they stumble across Frankenstein's monster too.

It's a mixed bag, vampirewise. The first two are among the best classic horror ever made, but the sequels deteriorate as they proceed -- "Daughter" is a very solid movie on its own, and "Son" is cliche and wooden. By "House," they've decided to just be silly and campy, and throw in as many fictional monsters as they can fit in.

The direction in the first three movies is quite solid, eerie and gothic, with plenty of memorably haunting moments ("I never drink... wine," Dracula says smilingly). Lots of cobwebbed castles, foggy London streets, bats and women drifting around in white dresses. The last two are strictly B-movie fare in terms of directorial skill, and some moments like the flaming mine are simply awful.

Lugosi is simply brilliant as Dracula. While not the stately, imposing figure that Stoker described, he has a blazing intensity that works just as well, as well as great charm. Carlos Villarías is not quite as good, but does an excellent and faithful job in the Spanish version. Carradine doesn't seem to be trying too hard, and Cheney just doesn't work as a vampire (though he's glorious as Talbot).

These actors are backed by casts that range from the sublime (creepy, bug-eating, cackling Frye) to the ridiculous (the dreamy-eyed, hammy nurses in "House"). Gloria Holden deserves special kudos for her tormented, bisexual vampiress torn between good and evil, and Edward Van Sloan as Dracula's nemesis, Van Helsing.

"Dracula - The Legacy Collection" has a dud and a campy monsterfest, but the first three movies are divinely dark horror/suspense movies. Definitely worth getting and enjoying.

5 out of 5 stars A Most Have Collection.......2007-02-07

This is a true gem. Of course all the Universal Horror Legacy Collections are but Dracula and the Creature from the Black Lagoon are by far my favorite. They come in cool and spooky looking cases that have a view window to see the spooky picture on the DVD case. The only real complaint I have is that the DVD menu that usually appears on the inside covers of DVD cases, that lists what each DVD has on it, is just laying loose inside the case and there's no real place to put it. I tried putting it in the actual case but then the case won't close right and then won't fit back in the box right. But the selections found on this DVD collection are hard to find movies unless you tape them off TCM during October-LOL ;) So I have no qualms about saying that this collection is worth the price you pay for it and I've watched all the movies over and over again. If you are a Horror, vampire, or Universal movie fan then this collection is a must have for you.

Description

Edward D. Wood Jr. (1924-1978) remains one of the best-remembered, most talked-about directors in the history of cinema. He is a certifiable legend (well, he was "certifiable" anyway). This fun and fascinating collection throws a spotlight on the man whose work personifies the phrase "so bad it's good." <P> Here on two diabolical discs are six feature-length films written by and/or directed by and/or starring the unforgettable (or is it unforgivable?) Ed Wood. Plus the original documentary The Ed Wood Story, including exclusive interviews with such luminaries as Dolores Fuller, Bela Lugosi Jr., Martin Laudau and Johnny Depp, among others. <P> Disc One <P> GLEN OR GLENDA? (1953) - The cross-dressing classic that started it all, with Wood as a triple threat - writer, director, and star, along with future Plan 9 co-stars Bela Lugosi, Dolores Fuller, Lyle Talbot, and Conrad Brooks. <P> JAIL BAIT (1954) - Ed Wood goes film noir with this cautionary tale of a naïve young man who is lured into a life of crime. Dolores Fuller and Lyle Talbot co-star once again, and future Hercules Unchained star Steve Reeves has his first speaking role in this film as a police lieutenant. <P> BRIDE OF THE MONSTER (1955) - One of Wood's most-celebrated...er...creations, with Bela Lugosi as a mad scientist who kidnaps people and tries to turn them into super-men using atomic power. Tor Johnson and Paul Marco make their Ed Wood debuts as Lobo and Kelton the Cop, dis-respectively. <P> THE VIOLENT YEARS (1956) - Wood penned the script for this good-girls-gone-bad tale, helmed by veteran western director William Morgan. In something of a switch from Glen or Glenda, the girls dress up as boys in order to commit their crimes! Timothy Farrell of Glen or Glenda and Jail Bait is the only Ed Wood returnee here. <P> Disc Two <P> NIGHT OF THE GHOULS (1959) - Wood is back behind the megaphone again as the director and writer of this strange tale that is arguably worse than Plan 9 From Outer Space (if such a thing is possible). Western star Kenne Duncan is Dr. Acula (get it?), a phony spiritualist who conducts fake séances. Tor Johnson and Paul Marco reprise their perennial roles as Lobo and Kelton the Cop. <P> PLAN 9 FROM OUTER SPACE (1959) - Wood's piece de resistance (or piece of something). The grand-prize winner of so many so-bad-it's-good lists, this horror/sci-fi curiosity has something to do with evil (and kinda bitchy) aliens who come to earth and resurrect the dead, using these vampire-zombies to help them take over the world. Starring Wood favorites Lyle Talbot, Tor Johnson, Paul Marco, Bela Lugosi, and Tom Mason (Wood's wife's chiropractor) as Bela's double (since Lugosi died before principal photography had commenced). <P> BONUS FEATURE: The Ed Wood Story - An affectionate look at E.W. featuring clips and interviews with those who knew and admired him, including Dolores Fuller, Johnny Depp, and Martin Landau. <P> Approx. 7-1/2 hrs.

5 out of 5 stars Passport Video got the message!.......2007-04-15

Okay, i was really rough on a previous title by this company because of their highly aggravating huge logo that appeared in the right hand corner of the screen, it was so distracting i couldn't concentrate on the film. This title is different, so far i have not seen that notorious huge logo, i did manage to catch a glimpse of of a small opaque logo saying " Ed Wood", but it was so slight and lasted only a second, it didn't bother me in the least. This is a great value and the quality of the prints are wonderful, great deal, and nice packaging too, no flippers!!! Great deal Passport, hopefully you re-do Bela Lugosi 15 Frightful Films!

5 out of 5 stars The best of the worst .......2007-02-14

This is probably the greatest collection of the worst movies of all times. All are the creations from the mind of Ed Wood. Most people may remember the movie of Ed Wood's life with Johnny Depp as the title role. While that was played for laughs and some pathos, the real story was not too far away. Ed Wood had a true passion for making movies. He just did not make good ones. These are all fun to watch and have a laugh at, but understand that the intent was serious movie making. It might be somewhat sad to watch the declining years of Bela Lugosi, though. Get this set to watch and have fun with.

5 out of 5 stars Mysterious.......2007-05-12

In this collection you find one of the cineastic highlights of the 30ties; "The Black Cat", directed by Edgar G. Ulmer; a fantastic variation of the old Edgar Allan Poe - Story; crossed with demonic memoires of the 1st World War - Boris Karloff and Bela Lugosi have been in this war, one has become a victim, his love ans life destroyed, the other is a human monster, responsible for the death of thousends of soldiers and a sick collector of female beauty. The setting is a Bauhaus-building on a mountain, where the battlefield was, a kind of futuristic mausoleum. This film was made in Austria in 1934, the time of fascism, and you can smell the near danger of Nazi-Terror. John J. Mescall is a genius on camera. I think this movie is singular in the history of gothic art. The other movies are good exampels for the singular art of the Dracula-actor Bela Lugosi.

5 out of 5 stars Should have been titled Lugosi/Karloff collection.......2007-04-25

This box set of movies captures Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff at the height of their respective careers. Both are highlighted here in 5 different films that allow them to share the spotlight and explore some fairly meaty roles. Especially in the "The Black Cat" A particularly subtle yet brutal horror tale pitting Lugosi against Karloff in a twisted psychological battle of revenge, mysticism and devil worship. Very much ahead of it's time in both subject matter and brutality. The makeup, set design, mood and lighting are quite memorable.

All 5 movies though are quite enjoyable, and while tame compared to today's horror fare, they still explore some weighty subjects with an appropriate amount of abject horror and suspense.

It's fun to review some of the details of each of these movies, and pick out small little mistakes and missed edits. A particular example is seen in "The Invisible Ray" watch closely as Walter Kingsford as he plays a murdered Sir Francis Stevens. He is lying on the bed as Lugosi shines a bright light into his face to snap a couple of photos. After Lugosi turns off the bright light, Kigsford obviously blinks his eyes, even though he's supposed to already be dead. pretty funny, and the first time I watched the movie, I could hardly believe the obvious mistake.

At any rate, all 5 movies are entertaining, well written, and provided both Lugosi and Karloff with vehicles with which to display their talent.

Highly recommended for any classic horror buffs.

4 out of 5 stars Horrors!.......2007-02-05

Universal Pictures has had a number of different movie openings over the years, but my favorite has always been one of its oldest, the one showing the airplane flying around the Universal Globe. This opening is shown on several films in the Bela Lugosi Collection, which is just another little perk in a generally decent set.

Three of the movies (all on Side One of the single disc) are loosely based on Edgar Allan Poe stories. In Murders in the Rue Morgue, Lugosi plays a demented showman at a circus. His show features an ape that is willing to kill for his master. Lugosi also has an obsession with creating some sort of ape-human hybrid, and if a few women need to die in the process, so be it. Although not the most well-written of movies, it does have a nice look to it, with that eerie German Expressionist influence that is seen in other horror films of the period. This is also the only film in the set that doesn't also include Boris Karloff.

The Black Cat has Lugosi in a more heroic role as a man out for vengeance against Karloff's villainous Satanist, who years earlier had committed a treasonous act that led to Lugosi's imprisonment. Now Lugosi and a honeymooning couple are at Karloff's estate where both characters plot against each other. In a nice contrast to the standard old dark houses, the setting for this film is a futuristic mansion.

The Raven has Lugosi returning to evil as a doctor obsessed with a woman whose life he has saved. He also is an avid Poe fan, leading him to set up some nasty traps (especially a deadly pendulum). Karloff is a fugitive who is forced to help Lugosi in his schemes. These are probably Lugosi's and Karloff's best roles in the set.

The Side Two movies put Lugosi in distinctly supporting roles. The Invisible Ray features Karloff as a scientist who is irradiated by a strange element, one that threatens to kill him, but also gives him a lethal touch and a homicidal mania. Lugosi plays a doctor again, this time one who creates a serum that offsets the effect of the radiation. The science is awful, but the movie itself is fun.

The final film, Black Friday, has Lugosi in a minor role as a gangster. Karloff plays one of his mad scientist roles, this time a brain surgeon who transplants part of a gangster's brain into his dying friend's. Here the acting laurels go to Stanley Ridge's as the man whose personality alternates between kindly literature professor and vicious gangster.

In the horror films of the `30s and '40s, Lugosi often played second fiddle to Karloff, and this set demonstrates why. Although Karloff himself is not at his best, he is definitely more skilled than Lugosi. That's not to say Lugosi is bad, but he can't steal a show the way Karloff can. As a Lugosi showcase, this is merely okay (and there aren't much in the way of extras) but the movies themselves are pretty fun. As a whole, this set gets a low four stars and should be enjoyed by fans of the classic era of Universal horror films.

3 out of 5 stars Fun.......2007-01-13

Interesting variations on some Poe stories, though not extremely helpful... You get the feeling these guys were going through the motions here, reaching for material to take advantage of the sets and odd facial features they had at their disposal.

4 out of 5 stars Horrible old movies you've got to love!.......2007-01-12

Anyone who loves to watch those old black and white horror movies will surely love to have this collection included in their DVD library. Not only do you get Bela doing his best to terrify you, but Karloff also comes along for the ride. At times the acting is bumpy, but, hey, that's what makes these movies so much fun to watch. So get the popcorn ready, dim the lights, and be prepared to be intertained.

When Universal Pictures picked up the movie rights to a Broadway adaptation of <I>Dracula</I>, they felt secure in handing the property over to the sinister team of actor Lon Chaney and director Tod Browning. But Chaney died of cancer, and Universal hired the Hungarian who had scored a success in the stage play: Béla Lugosi. The resulting film launched both Lugosi's baroque career and the horror-movie cycle of the 1930s. It gets off to an atmospheric start, as we meet Count Dracula in his shadowy castle in Transylvania, superbly captured by the great cinematographer Karl Freund. Eventually Dracula and his blood-sucking devotee (Dwight Frye, in one of the cinema's truly mad performances) meet their match in a vampire-hunter called Van Helsing (Edward Van Sloan). If the later sections of the film are undeniably stage bound and a tad creaky, Dracula nevertheless casts a spell, thanks to Lugosi's creepily lugubrious manner and the eerie silences of Browning's directing style. (After a mood-enhancing snippet of <I>Swan Lake</I> under the opening titles, there is no music in the film.) <I>Frankenstein</I>, which was released a few months later, confirmed the horror craze, and Universal has been making money (and countless spin-off projects) from its twin titans of terror ever since. Certainly the role left a lasting impression on the increasingly addled and drug-addicted Lugosi, who was never quite able to distance himself from the part that made him a star. He was buried, at his request, in his black vampire cape. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

I'm not sure what was more enjoyable...watching this classic tale in black & white or watching my son get spooked without the blood and gore found in the horror films of today. A must have for horror film collectors or anyone that appreciates Bela Lugosi's contributions to the genre.

Got my kids to actually sit down and watch it with me. Teenagers! When we did research on the history and background of the film and actors they enjoyed the movie so much more. They said it helped put them in the mindset of the 1940's movie goer and felt the sheer terror they felt watching Dracula come to life.

5 out of 5 stars I never drink... wine.......2007-03-09

Bram Stoker's vampire novel has been remade dozens of times, but perhaps the best adaptation is the classic Bela Lugosi version. Fairly faithful to the novel and dripping with gothic atmosphere, what really makes "Dracula" stand out is the bone-chillingly charming performance by Lugosi.

Same settings, same marks, same cinematography, many of the same scenes -- although it's much longer. It's excellent, and although it lacks that iconic intensity that Lugosi brought the English-language film, it's full of atmosphere and good acting.

Technically "Dracula" wasn't the first adaptation of "Dracula" -- that honor belongs to "Nosferatu" -- but it was the first to actually tackle the storyline in Stoker's book. And to date, it's perhaps the only to portray everyone's favorite vampire with the necessary atmosphere -- ominous, dignified and creepy.

Tod Browning sets it in all the necssary places -- crumbling castles, savage mountainous villages, foggy London streets, and sumptuous Victorian drawing rooms with eerie noises from outside. Granted, a fair amount of stuff is changed -- Jonathan Harker is partially replaced by the mad Renfield -- but none of these really detract from the storyline.

And Browning pours the creepiness on thickly, such as Dracula's seduction of young women, which keeps up the whole idea of vampiric sexuality. But Browning also knows how to pour on the subtle horror, without blood or violence -- like any scene with Renfield.

The script is just as great as the direction, with some unspeakably good dialogue ("For one who has not lived even a single lifetime, you're a wise man, Van Helsing"), usually from Dracula. But the best scenes and dialogue are made up of highlights from the novel (such as Dracula saying dreamily, "Listen to them, the children of the night. What music they make!").

But the star of all this is Lugosi himself, one of the two quintessential vampire actors (the other being Christopher Lee). While he doesn't resemble the book's Dracula, his hypnotic stare and charming, intense manner make him an ideal vampire count. And Frye deserves a nod for one of the nastiest, maddest, creepinest performances in cinema history. Sort of a nuttier, bug-eating Gollum ("Not when I can get nice fat spiders!").

The original "Dracula" is still the best, more than seventy years after it was made. Dripping with Gothic atmosphere and seductive charm, this is a magnificent piece of work.

The actor that played Dracula in the spanish couldn't comepare to Lugosi . The Spanish count looked as scary as my mother-in law ! They don't make movies like this anymore . I heard about this movie and was curious watched it and was not disapointed .

Universal Pictures made a great deal of money from its monster movies in the 1930s. In the early '40s, the burlesque team of Bud Abbott and Lou Costello kept the studio's coffers full. When the two franchises were combined in 1948, the result was another windfall--despite the apparent oil-and-water mix of subject matter. Abbott and Costello Meet Frankenstein was the first of these summit meetings, although the title is a misnomer. Actually, Bud and Lou bump into most of the Universal heavy-hitters, including Count Dracula (played by Béla Lugosi himself), the Wolfman (Lon Chaney Jr.), and the Frankenstein monster (veteran monster Glenn Strange). There's even a token appearance by the Invisible Man, whose disembodied voice is recognizable as that of Vincent Price. Sure enough, the film is funny, especially since it gives the portly Costello multiple opportunities to do his wide-eyed, quivering scaredy-cat routine. Audiences ate it up, and in future installments Bud and Lou would run into Boris Karloff, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, the Invisible Man, and the Mummy. But the first was the best. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

Timeless classic blends comedy and monster movie, resulting in something spooky enough to excite kids without causing sleepless nights. The best A&C vehicle by far, its great to have Lugosi and Chaney on hand. A fast, funny scarefest that viewers of all ages should love.

Theres nothing that beats a movie that fits with famous movie monsters and this has it all. Very well known names in the movie that brings back great memories. A true gem to Abbott and Costello fans. Buy this cause they rarely play it on TV anymore. Highly Recommended!

5 out of 5 stars Exorcising the Monsters.......2007-05-15

This film assumes a knowledge of the Hollywood horror films it satirizes, else it may not be appreciated. In London Larry Talbot tries to call America. Wilbur has a problem unloading a wagon, but Sandra likes him. A phone call warns him about two crates shipped to the House of Horror. Mr. McDougall got them dirt cheap from Europe - the remains of Dracula and Frankenstein! Chick and Wilbur must deliver the crates personally. Their banter is full of jokes. "Does Dracula know it?" the comedy comes from knowing what Chick and Wilbur can't see. The missing contents lead to an investigation by McDougall. We learn more about Sandra and her interest in Wilbur; its business not pleasure. Larry Talbot arrives, and asks to be locked in his room.

Wilbur and Chick arrive at the castle. They begin to search for the missing monsters, and Wilbur discovers them. But they disappear when Chick arrives. They all show up for the masquerade party. The full moon affects Larry Talbot. There is much comic action and confusion. [The special effects have advanced since the 1930s.] Chick and Larry arrive to rescue Joan and Wilbur. But Larry is affected by the full moon. There is a comic chase down the hall, and at the party. At the end the monsters are eliminated, at least as far as we can see. There is a clue to their next film.

The horror films of the 1930s reflect the concerns of people. "Frankenstein" represents the man-made horror of the Great Depression, almost beyond control. "Dracula" represents the threat of a powerful foreign ruler. World War Two saw an end to those fears. The horror films of the 1950s represented new fears, about the environment or society. "Them" or "The Creature from the Black Lagoon" are of one type. "The Invasion of the Body Snatchers" represent unnameable fear. "On the Beach" was the ultimate horror film, one that may have prevented a nuclear calamity.
