The come-from-behind winner of the 1981 Oscar for best picture, Chariots of Fire either strikes you as either a cold exercise in mechanical manipulation or as a tale of true determination and inspiration. The heroes are an unlikely pair of young athletes who ran for Great Britain in the 1924 Paris Olympics: devout Protestant Eric Liddell (Ian Charleson), a divinity student whose running makes him feel closer to God, and Jewish Harold Abrahams (Ben Cross), a highly competitive Cambridge student who has to surmount the institutional hurdles of class prejudice and anti-Semitism. There's delicious support from Ian Holm (as Abrahams's coach) and John Gielgud and Lindsay Anderson as a couple of Cambridge fogies. Vangelis's soaring synthesized score, which seemed to be everywhere in the early 1980s, also won an Oscar. Chariots of Fire was the debut film of British television commercial director Hugh Hudson (Greystoke) and was produced by David Puttnam. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie!.......2007-03-09

I first saw the film in 1982 shortly after it won for best picture. I did not even know what the film was about. However, since that first viewing Chariots of Fire has always been a special movie to me. The honesty of the film is invigorating, and compelling. What do I mean by that? It does not apologize for the forthright faith of the Scotsman, or the almost self destructive drive of the Jew. The triumph of this film was it took these two men, presented them not only as athletes, but instilled in them human spirit and drive, then sat back and allowed the audience to draw their own conclusion as to who they were. The only issue I had with the DVD, and the reason I rated it only 4 stars was the fact the special feature disk was nothing more than a self congratulatory documentary and interview of the cast and crew. I was hoping for more background on the history of the time, and the people of the film, to bad. The movie itself is one of the best ever made, more than enough reason to buy this DVD.

1995 had already seen the box-office success of sword-wielding heroes in Rob Roy and Braveheart when along came this glossy revision of the Arthurian legend, in which Lady Guinevere (Julia Ormond) is torn between her love for the noble King Arthur (Sean Connery) and the passionate knight Sir Lancelot (Richard Gere). As the story opens, Guinevere's lands are under attack by the evil knight Malagant (Ben Cross), and she must choose between marriage to Arthur and the security of Camelot, or encouraging the affections of Lancelot, who has heroically rescued her from a potentially lethal attack. Anyone looking for meticulous medieval authenticity won't find it here, but director Jerry Zucker (Ghost) keeps the action moving with exuberant spirit and glorious production values. Even if you don't completely believe Richard Gere as a somewhat too-contemporary Lancelot, the performances of Ormond and especially Connery are effortlessly appealing. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The Best Kind Of "Popcorn Movie"!.......2007-04-21

I don't see why people are making so much noise against this movie. We all know this isn't a history class. We all know this isn't realistic in any way. It is NOT and it's NOT supposed to be!
I've never heard people say : "The musical version of The Three Musketeers with Gene Kelly isn't faithful to the book". Frankly, who cares? If you want the true story, the realistic story, get a book or a documentary. What we have here is a true "popcorn movie", the kind of film you put in your DVD player for a nice evening of "no thinking, just enjoying". This is a Hollywood family movie, with 3 great stars, fancy costumes, beautiful scenery and great music. To me, this is some of the best entertainment! The kind of entertainment that cinema was invented for and that was so succesful in the 40s and 50s.
It seems to me that people today just can't enjoy that kind of entertainment anymore. That's sad!
So, please, stop complaining and just enjoy for Pete's sake, lol!

2 out of 5 stars Torn.......2007-04-12

This movie is GOOD, if you do not think of the traditional Arthurian story. But, unfortunately, to those of us who like the original Arthurian story, this is really a bad movie. Also, Richard Gere's character fits his real life attitude and so he really didn't have to act in this movie.... Don't get me wrong, I LOVE the movie, as a movie, BUT, it has little to do with the King Arthur legend... much like the more recent movie about King Arthur. Because of this, it is a major let down to real Arthurian lovers...... So, I am torn between giving it 4 stars for being a fun and exciting movie and giving it a negative 4 stars for letting us true Arthurian buffs down..... so, I will give it a 2 star rating....

5 out of 5 stars MY KIND OF MOVIE.......2007-04-10

Not alot of critics liked this movie and it didnt do great but I loved it- I am playing it on my new Toshiba HD dvd and it is great on that machine. I think the acting is good enough and the music is great. It is a good story with prenty of action. The 2 battle scenes are good. The first with the horses running across the field at night is great. I lost my first copy after 25 plays or so and bought another on Amazon.

3 out of 5 stars Review: First Knight.......2007-03-26

I wasn't sure what to expect. At the end, I wasn't sure what to think. (No Spoilers Included)

The open-ended one sentence summary: Guinevere is going to be married to old King Arthur, but on her way over she meets this guy Lancelot...

Content Inappropriate for All Ages: Battle scenes with a little blood, some allusion to "adult situations" (none happen)

Characters: 3 of 5 swords. Just want to say, spot on for Guinevere. She did have a look of terror/confusion for all alot of the movie, but she had a rough time. Sean Connery as an old King Arthur was pretty good, but sometimes he mumbled. Kings don't mumble. Lancelot. We needed a new one. Our Lancelot looked like he walked onto this set from a modern archeologist action/adventure. Not even speaking of the conspicous American accent. He did get a good scene of development, but not enough. And why was the bad guy evil? He even has a bad guy name: Malagant!

Plot: 3 of 5 swords. Well, thinking back... the movie's plot was nothing to speak of. Just a love triangle. It's also hard for a modern audience to accept that Guinevere would love someone thirty years older than herself. Malagant seemed to be evil for no other reason than to kidnap Guinevere on several occasions. This movie does have a good script (except leaving out Malagant's motivation).

Cinematography: 4 of 5 swords. Good action scenes, by the way. Nice intimate character shots (too bad about the characters). Nice locations. All in all, good cinematography.

Music: 4 of 5 swords. A good score by Jerry Goldsmith, but I would have liked to hear some more "medievel sounding" music.

Impact: 2 of 5 swords. This movie came off a bit thin. I didn't really feel one way or the other about most of the characters. Lancelot's "change" wasn't very noticeable (did he even change?). And I wondered alot about the last couple scenes and felt unsatisfied.

All in all, 3 of 5 swords.

Would I buy it on DVD? For $5!

My notes as a King Arthur (book) fan: Weeeeelllllll, this movie got all kinds of things "wrong". Lancelot is supposed to be a gallant French knight, Guinevere is supposed to be blond (but this is very minor), and King Arthur, as far as I know, wasn't an old guy. All the other Arthurian characters are missing. No Merlin, Gawain, Morgana le Faye; even Excalibur was not mentioned. They did get Camelot's code pretty right.

But, I judge movies on their own merit. So, though it might fail as an Arthurian movie, it might be a good movie. This one left something to be desired, but I'm kinda glad I saw it.

School for Scoundrels is the kind of stupid-fun comedy for which the phrase "Wait for the DVD" was invented. Like a lot of its jokes, it fell flat in its brief theatrical release, but there's enough funny stuff here to warrant a look, especially if you enjoyed writer-director Todd Phillips' previous films Old School and Road Trip. Of course, Phillips also directed the comedy remake of Starsky and Hutch, so you know there's going to be as many misses as hits in the movie's constant barrage of slapstick, insults, and tasteless gags. Loosely inspired by the 1960 British comedy directed by Robert Hamer, this crudely Americanized version finds a meek and geeky parking-meter reader named Roger (Napoleon Dynamite's John Heder) looking for love and not getting any, so he enrolls in a confidence-building school led by Dr. P (Billy Bob Thornton), who turns out to be Roger's #1 rival in his quest to win the heart of Amanda (Jacinda Barrett), Roger's cute Australian neighbor and the would-be girl of his dreams. As an escalating war of one-upmanship in which Roger's quick learning provokes Dr. P's competitive instincts, School for Scoundrels isn't exactly a laff-riot, but it's got some aces up its sleeve that make it worthwhile, like a crazed appearance by Ben Stiller, a fun if not-always-funny supporting cast (Michael Clark Duncan, Horatio Sanz, Todd Louiso) and a pair of stars who work well together as comedic opposites in the game of love. --Jeff Shannon

Description

(Comedy) Jon Heder plays an unlucky meter reader who enrolls in a confidence-building class so he can win the love of the girl of his dreams. The class turns out to be something quite different when it becomes clear to the young man that his professor (Thornton), has his sights set on the same girl. "Uproarious…fiendishly funny!" - Rolling Stone, Peter Travers "A+ for laughs and genuine comic smarts" - Maxim, Pete Hammond

4 out of 5 stars A school many would like to go.......2007-04-23

We were expecting this film to be a disappointment, but it surpassed our expectations. I laughed most of the time. It's not the perfect underdog comedy, but if you're fan of movies like "The 40 year old Virgin," "Old School," and "Anger Management," you might enjoy this film.

Story:
Things are not going well in the life of Roger (Jon Heder). He lives alone in his apartment and works as a New York meter maid. He is a shy, introvert, and emotional young man who is always picked on by people around him. He likes an Australian beauty Amanda (Jacinda Barrett) who lives next door with her annoying roommate Becky (Sarah Silverman). Roger feels lost, but fortunately his current situation is about to change. A weird friend of his gives him a phone number that is going to change his lonely life. What Roger doesn't know is that he is about to enter a school for men with low self-esteem. The rude teacher is Dr. P (Billy Bob Thornton) who is evil and lies to women to get what he wants. He is going to teach the class how to become real men. At first, things seem to be going well for Roger, but then he finds out that his teacher is trying to get Amanda. Things get harsh between teacher and student. They will fight until one of them wins the heart of Amanda.

Review:
The movie doesn't waste any time and takes you right to the main plot. It is a comedy and there are no confusing subplots. We get hooked up to the story right away. Jon Heder ('Napoleon Dynamite') as a lead actor does wonders in this new movie. I never took the guy seriously before, but this is probably his best work. He is very believable, likeable, funny, and perfect for the role. We hope he won't get stereotyped because he is getting known with these kinds of roles. He is not the only big star; Billy Bob Thornton is another actor who plays the evil teacher very well.

What we like about the story is the way the main character evolves from being a nervous kid to a fearless street-smart man who is willing to challenge anyone. He becomes an unstoppable force willing to do whatever it takes to save his girl from the evil Dr. P. The writers Scot Armstrong and Todd Phillips did an excellent job in creating a very likable character. The jokes and dialogue are funny and could be over the top sometimes, but if you watched movies like "Old School"--also made by the same director--you will probably expect some strong language. What we like in the technical department is the editing. The film doesn't drag and seems to go smoothly.

Without giving up the end, there are two "twists" that will keep you guessing. One thing we noticed though is that the plot reminds me so much of a comedy we saw few years ago.

The Verdict:
"School for Scoundrels" is a quite enjoyable film that will keep you entertain if you are fan of the new wave of edgy comedies.

4 out of 5 stars Attention All Jon Heder Lovers!.......2007-04-15

If you liked Jon Heder in Napolean Dynomite, you will love him in this film; only here we see him for what he really looks like: buttercup face and smile, gorgeous hips and lanky legs, a true knockout!
Life isn't fair for Roger (Heder) given that he's a fearful pushover. All that is about to change as his friend at a Big Brothers institute advises him to take a class in self-confidence. Only to gain the self-confidence he needs to impress a girl and society at large, he really has to go through the mud before he reaches the honey. In other words, his venture takes him through an underworld of lies, intrigue and deceit. Who wins? Bill Bob Thornton against Heder or the reverse? I will leave this to first-time viewers to find out!

3 out of 5 stars CAMEOS GALORE SAVE THIS FILM !.......2007-04-08

Liking the many talented people in this film will make you appreciate the humor in this OK comedy. I don't want to be too harsh as It did hold my interest the entire time, but with all these veterans it should have had me rolling on the floor.

1 out of 5 stars comedy? what comedy?.......2007-04-05

This movie starts with a absurd love triangle between a loser and con artist. A set up perhaps similar to something about mary.

But instead of trying to get laughs - the film spends most of its time trying to be sincere and emotionally deep and believable. I gues the film tries to be a romantic comedy. Unfortunately, all the action is between the rivals, the chick doesnt get enough screen time (she seems kinda bland and nice), plus the initial romance is never really established. SO the emotional heart of the film is missing. Most of the emotion of this film is the brooding of a gloomy loser.

there are a few jokes. the only time the film goes into real comedy territory is the very very end. and its not really that funny.

4 out of 5 stars Funny Movie That Keeps You Entertained............2007-04-04

If you thought Jon Heder was a good actor in "Napoleon Dynamite", you love his acting in this movie!

This movie is not only funny, wacky and fairly original in terms of plot line, but the actors also do a terrific job in playing their roles. The storyline keeps you guessing as to what will happen next..... So, I'd say this movie has a nice mix of both humor and storyline.

3 out of 5 stars Better than most Horrorfests I've viewed as of late . . ........2007-06-22

I've been very disappointed in these "Horrorfest" films, but this is one is probably one of the best. I'll give it "3" stars if only for the fact that I didn't feel cheated when the film was over. It looks and feels more like a horror film and relies less on bombastic CGI effects.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD MOVIE!!!!!.......2007-05-29

I must admit I only watched this because Scout Taylor-Compton who stars in the new Halloween. But then I watched it and I really liked it. The children scared the heck out of me. Dont believe all these bad reviews. check it out for yourslef.

2 out of 5 stars Save Your Time and Money .......2007-05-24

Wicked Little Things held promise, simply because it was selected for the After Dark filmfest. Other movies in the series are good, if not great, like Dark Ride and Gravedancers. I expected similar quality from Wicked Little Things. I was vastly disappointed.

The basic plot without giving away many spoilers is that children worked the mines years ago, and due to shotty and corrupt practices by the owner, the kids were killed. Now they roam the mountains by their mine looking for revenge and blood. Into this comes a recently widowed mother and her two daughters. They inherited a house just by the mine and are determined to make a new life for themselves, but they cross paths with the zombie miner children.

Now I like a good, cheap horror movies. This movie isn't good, just cheap. The little zombie minors are just kids with black contacts and dirty faces. That might have been scary in maybe 1960, but now it looks pretty lame. The kids sometimes eat bits of people. Most of us have seen that done to death if we've watched 28 Days Later, or Night of the Living Dead. This movie offers nothing new, just bad directing, bad acting, a weak script, and a feeble ending.

If you haven't seen them yet, watch Dark Ride or Gravedancers instead. If you must see a zombie movie try Army of Darkness for comedy, or 28 Days Later for great zombie action. But do yourself a favor. Save your time and money and avoid Wicked Little Things.

Not recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Not a bad little wicked movie.......2007-05-21

This may be one of the better recent horror movies I have seen. There were so many things I liked about it also!
First off... I've read the other reviews and do not agree with some of the comments. I will agree that the plot is a bit cookie cutter... the plot has been reiterated a number of times so I won't go into that.
But... the good things I liked are: The acting is not overdone... it's right on par. The special effects AREN'T the movie.. they enhance the movie. The plot is easy to follow, direct. All the characters fit into the story... no suprise characters. No special camera effects that took away from the movie.
Simply stated... this is a more traditional scare fest. But I happen to like those.

5 out of 5 stars horrorfest 2006.......2007-05-07

haven't even watched the movie yet, i bought it because it was one of the movies in the horrorfest 2006. and i can't wait to watch it! can't wait for horrorfest 2007!

Michael Jai White replaces Ving Rhames in <I>Undisputed II: Last Man Standing</I>, a sequel to the 2002 <I>Undisputed</I>, in which a heavyweight champion boxer is sent to prison as a ruse to get him to fight a champion pugilist on the slammer circuit. White is serviceable as "Iceman" Chambers, this time arrested in Russia (framed for drug possession) and sent to hard time in a horrible prison. There Iceman resists efforts to convince him to fight a champion kickboxer (Scott Adkins), but the system is determined to break him or get him to cooperate with the plan. This brutal adventure is pretty much by-the-numbers as follow-up features go, but it is generally exciting, and martial arts buffs will certainly enjoy the taut action sequences. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Description

Sequel to the 2002 film. This time, Heavyweight Champ George "Iceman" Chambers (White) is sent to a Russian jail on trumped-up drug charges. In order to win his freedom he must fight against the jailhouse fighting champ Uri Boyka (Adkins) in a battle to the death. This time he is not fighting for a title, he is fighting for his life!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-06-11

I really love the action in this movie. Some of the language however, is a little over the top. The purchasing experience was wonderful. Fast shipment and the condition was just as advertised.

5 out of 5 stars superb.......2007-05-22

just like every other reviewer here, i was surprised by how good this movie was. i was in awe while watching how quick these fighters moved and i was extremely glad that someone recommended this to me because i wouldn't have even thought twice about it.

not much to say about the plot other then it has been done to death by other movies. don't let that discourage you, it's still well worth a watch. the only thing that i wished was different was that it wasn't a sequel to the first undisputed. the character differences of Iceman were unbelievably noticeable and that is why i would like to make it clear that i rated this movie as a movie all on it's own, not as a sequel. there were no references to the first one and if it weren't for the name of the champ as well as the movie title, you wouldn't even know they were one in the same.

4 out of 5 stars U II.......2007-03-21

I enjoyed this movie. I only bought it because of White, but it was not the greatest but pretty OK for entertainment.

3 out of 5 stars Undisputed II'Last man standing.......2007-03-09

A lot of action. All fights, axcept the final, were intence.

2 out of 5 stars undisputed 2.......2007-03-09

A pretty good movie, it was definetly better than I expected it to be, good enough for me to submit a review about it.

One of the most memorably offbeat romantic comedies of the 1990s begins when a talk-radio veterinarian named Abby (Janeane Garofalo) takes a call from Brian (Ben Chaplin), the owner of a roller-skating Great Dane. Brian is intrigued by Abby's voice and asks if she'll agree to meet him. Insecure about her looks and her nonexistent love life, Abby agrees, but describes herself as a tall blonde, then begs her attractive neighbor Noelle (played by Uma Thurman) to meet with Brian in her place. The ensuing case of switched identity is complicated when Noelle takes a liking to Brian who, of course, thinks she is Abby. This confusion gains comedic momentum when Abby safely plays herself on the radio and in a long, hilariously seductive phone call with Brian, but by now the situation has grown hopelessly complex, and Abby has to find a way to reveal herself without disappointing Brian. Many viewers rightly complained that the movie relies on the assumption that Abby is unattractive, even though Garofalo is more attractive and appealing here than she'd been in several movies before and since. Still, this contemporary variation on <I>Cyrano de Bergerac</I> is a lightweight, good-natured surprise that values the quirks and foibles that make lovelorn romantics (including their pets) uniquely appealing. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Description

Charming and bittersweet, this modern-day romantic comedy starring Uma Thurman, Janeane Garofalo and Ben Chaplin, explores the beguiling perils of mistaken identity. <P>Abby (Garofalo), a savvy, witty veterinarian who hosts her own radio talk show, is anything but confident when it comes to love. A petite brunette, she describes herself as tall and blonde when Brian (Chaplin), a caller who is smitten with her radio persona, asks her on a date. She then talks her tall, blonde neighbor Noelle (Thurman) into assuming her identity, setting off an escalating series of hilarious and romantic crises.

3 out of 5 stars The Truth Must Be Told: I like this romantic comedy that echoes "Syrano de Bergerac".......2007-05-02

Janeane Garofalo stars as Abby, a veterinarian who has her own radio show. She is a cultured, educated woman, who is smart, has a good sense of humor and makes a great living. The problem is that her self-esteem is low because she does not find herself attractive being 5'1 brunette who once upon a time while in college had gained 40 pounds. Well, she looked like she lost all of them and she was charming if you ask me (perhaps, it is solidarity of another 5'0 brunette ) but when she developed a relationship over the phone with one of the callers, she tells him that she is 5'10" statuesque blonde who is hard to miss. The blonde (Uma Thurman) happened to be her next-door neighbor, the aspiring model/actress who agrees to go on the date instead of Abby... It may sound like cliché, and the film has several holes in the plot but is very enjoyable thanks to wonderful performance by Janeane and to these words:

"You know how someone's appearance can change the longer you know them? How a really attractive person, if you don't like them, can become more and more ugly; whereas someone you might not have even have noticed... that you wouldn't look at more than once, if you love them, can become the most beautiful thing you've ever seen. All you want to do is be near them."

3 out of 5 stars A good movie that I would not want to see twice.......2007-04-11

Good actresses, interesting plot. It is a nice comedy, just not one that I would choose to watch again. My 14-year old daughter loved it though and would watch it again! You will have to see for yourself...

3 out of 5 stars Cats and Dogs.......2007-04-11

What a heartbreaker! For a minute ten years back it seemed as if Janeane Garofalo would break out and jump to the head of the pack. She was burning down the house trying to beat the Parker Posey record of having made the most consecutive movies within a twelve month period. Then came this movie and she was forced to confront the Garofalo ceiling, that there would be no big future for her in the movies. People just didn't warm up to her enough. She was funny and sassy and had that amusing deadpan face Sarah Silverman later rode to the top.

And yet there was something smug and repulsive about her, and this movie showed it in spades. She played a radio talk show host and dog expert, who gave sarcastic advice to pet owners about their dogs and cats (hence the title) and who fell in love with the handsomest British man in town. And yet he preferred Uma Thurman to her! Then she decides to masquerade as Uma Thurman--never a bright idea, and one certain to backfire on you. Actually Garofalo isn't a bad looking woman, maybe a little hunched together like Judy Garland but that worked for her in general, but in THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS there were too many uninspired Michael Lehmann shots of her nose to nose with a pitbull or boxer, far too many visual comparisons of her as a dog. Few stars could walk away from this constant barrage unscathed and, of course, she wasn't quite a star. And plus people felt cheated, they had plunked down their $9 to see an Uma Thurman movie, and instead of Uma, the camera was constantly going to Janeane Garofalo! Indeed Uma hardly appears in the last half hour of the movie and none of the remaining characters even mentions her existence! Plus how humiliating for Uma! The credits list "Acting Coach for Uma Thurman," an indignity none of the other actors had to endure. What they should have hired was a "Personality Coach for Janeane Garofalo."

The dog is super cute and they should have just called the movie, "Hank," it would have been a modest success instead of a monster flop.

Jamie Foxx just twiddles his thumbs and glowers in the stereotypical "black best friend" part. What a waste of talent. If Foxx hates white people this must be the reason why and who could blame him!

2 out of 5 stars Great idea gone wrong.......2007-04-10

I am all for the multi-dimensional character. I found Garofalo's role promising in this. She was interesting to watch and was pretty much believable. Uma Thurman was ok too - a little less multi-dimensional but was lovable in a ditsy kind of way. However, the guy picked for leading man was the pits. Perhaps he is a good actor but you really can't tell from this movie. What is it exactly . . . he, honestly, doesn't come across as being smart enough for Garofalo. He's good looking to be sure but . . . boring. I don't believe the movie the second he enters it. I can see her falling for him initially but then getting tired of him because they have nothing to talk about. It would have been much better if he wound up with Thurman and some really interesting leading man showed up or he turned out to be some con man or something. There really was NO chemistry between them and that phone conversation . . . I was frankly embarrassed for Garofalo. I guess I didn't find her character believable in that. This movie really misses the mark - I love the premise - but Garofalo needs a leading man as strong as herself. I own the movie but doubt I will ever watch it again - I could sell it but I would feel like a peddler of shabby wares.

2 out of 5 stars Movie still great, DVD quality leaves a lot to be desired.......2007-04-07

I loved this movie when it first came out, and I still love it, which is why I ordered the DVD. However, the scenes are coming off as dark (as in unlighted) and without needed contrast. There was also one point where the DVD skipped. For less than $6 the DVD was worth it, but if it had been any more I would return it.

Product Description

When a young Edwardian family leaves the shores of England to build a home in the wilderness of East Africa, what they encounter is beyond their imagination, but forever remembered through the eyes of their 11-year-old daughter. Based on the beloved memoir by Elspeth Huxley, The Flame Trees of Thika brings to life the color and adventure of turn-of-the-century Kenya. In 1913, Robin (David Robb) and Tilly Grant (Hayley Mills) arrive in Kenya with the dream of transforming a barren plot of land into a thriving coffee plantation. But torrential rains, relentless insects and murderous animals, as well as relations with natives and other settlers, challenge their ambitions. Will England call them back? Or will the wide-eyed wonder of young Elspeth (Holly Aird) help unlock the mysteries of a foreign land and open the doors into the pleasures and rewards of a new home? From the creator of Upstairs, Downstairs, The Flame Trees of Thika is an enchanting, critically acclaimed mini-series featuring all seven episodes authentically shot on location.

Based on the beloved autobiographical novel by Elspeth Huxley, BBC miniseries <I>The Flame Trees of Thika</I> brings an eventful childhood in Eastern Africa to vivid life. In 1913, 11-year-old Elspeth Grant (Holly Aird) traveled with her mother, Tilly (Hayley Mills), from England to Kenya to help build a coffee plantation. (Born in 1907, Huxley was actually six at the time.) Her father, Robin (David Robb), who had preceded them, was waiting to greet his family in the arid town of Thika. Also waiting for them were lions, elephants, giraffes, and countless other creatures (the 18-week production was filmed on location in Kenya).

Directed by Roy Ward Baker (<I>A Night To Remember</I>) and written by John Hawkesworth (<I>Upstairs, Downstairs</I>), <I>The Flame Trees of Thika</I> isn't just about one girl, or one family, adrift in an occasionally hostile foreign land, but also about the dangers of colonialism. The Grants, their neighbors, the Palmers (Nicholas Jones and Sharon Maughan), and most of the other Europeans in Thika feel certain they're bringing culture to the uncivilized, without realizing what they're destroying in the process. Ian Crawford (Ben Cross from <I>Chariots of Fire</I>), is one possible exception to the rule, but he brings another kind of danger in his pursuit of Mrs. Palmer.

Since their actions are seen through the eyes of a child, <I>The Flame Trees of Thika</I> is never preachy, but the meddling of these adults--however well intentioned--in the affairs of the Masai, the Kikuyu, and other locals frequently creates tension. As Tilly notes, "It's like two whole separate circles revolving around each other--their world and ours--and only just touching occasionally." What began as Elspeth's coming-of-age story, becomes one for her parents, as well, in this sensitive and engaging series. <I>--Kathleen C. Fennessy</I>

2 out of 5 stars British Couple in Africa in 1913........2007-04-22

A British couple with daughter, start a coffee farm in Kenya Africa in 1913.

Haley Mills and family are pleasant. However, the pleasant is undone, by adultery and deaths (not Haley Mills), and the little girl is the only English-speaking child in a 100 miles.

A pretty scene of gazelles, is undone by a gazelle being shot. A terrific song duet at the piano, is undone by the singers being adulterers, singing for the deceived spouse, in the spouse's home. Schizophrenic producer.

One tragedy within 2 hours, is enough for me, rather than ten. Different from TV, holds your attention, is ok, some scenes of interest. I will not keep it to watch again. However, if price is not a thought, then it is of some interest. We never see the flame trees grown, only saplings. We never see the sprouts of charm blossom.

Good cast and location. Only, the idea of a British child on a farm in Africa, is worth keeping. Add some other children. The end of the leopard episode is good, but not the beginning. Re-write the rest. A missed opportunity for a good film. Show the workings of the coffee farm, from seedlings to harvest. British farm life in Africa, without the game hunting, and a happier script would be better. I recommend Johnny Weissmuller's good "Tarzan" series.

    5 out of 5 stars A Short Review.......2007-04-14

Other reviewers cover most of the bases. I would just remind you of the stout Europeans who sought their fortunes and endured the hardships after the Boer War and before World War I. Much like the 49'ers of Gold Rush days, it's the sort of pioneer spirit no longer seen today. Many stories have been written of men in that era but few have been told from the view of the Women and Children. I should think a good companion film would be Out Of Africa w/ Meryl Streep, R. Redford. A good companion book might be West into the Night by Beryl Markhum. (spelling from memory) Hayley is lovely in this role and I can say with all honesty, this series is worth the time you will spend watching it. I see fears of unsuitability for children in some of the posts but personally think there's nothing worse than what we saw in the old Tarzan movies.

3 out of 5 stars Flame Trees of Thika.......2006-11-12

Having read the book, written from the persapective of an 11 year old girl, I thought the DVD would be a nice gift for my 10 year old grandaughter. Fortunately I reviewed it prior to sending. The TV series has been scripted for an adult audience and it was not an appropriate selection. That being said my husband and I enjoyed it as we had just returned from Kenya. However, I would rate the book far higher than the DVD set.

    5 out of 5 stars memorable filmmaking.......2006-03-26

One of BBC's finest miniseries. Hayley Mills is perfect and subtle and full of surprises as Elspeth's mother. Hawkesworth's adaptation cuts sumptuously to the bone, understated and pulsing with life. Shot entirely in Kenya, director Roy Ward Baker favors colors gorgeous and contagious, and courageous in the indoor scenes, with thoughtful closeup angles underscoring the accumulating tensions that orchestrate the heart of the story. It ends up a relentless examination of British Colonialism, but without rancor. Bitterness is hidden most of the film, peeking out at a few crucial moments, but in the end the indictment stands. For all its natural beauty, Flame Trees is a film of a big sadness, and is more lovable for it. Holly Aird is a revelation as Elspeth, sometimes seeming to channel the woman Elspeth Huxley became, curious and invincible. Elspeth's trusting friendship with Njombo, an African plantation worker, is a small sweet light coursing through the film, and her exploration of African wildlife is moving. If you missed Flame Trees of Thika, get this DVD, then by all means read Elspeth Huxley - the two fit hand in glove. Warm recommendation.

5 out of 5 stars Days of Colonial Britain.......2006-01-20

Although this video is from a book based on a true story and is from the author's life experiences, it is somewhat out of date. The story, scenery, acting, etc. are excellent. It provides a true insight into life in colonial Africa, particularly Southern Africa. A must see for anyone interested in this period of history. Also, an excellent film for young teenagers.

The first happy day in the adult life of Anjuli (Amy Irving) is the day her husband's body is set on fire. Her rich and powerful husband, the Rana of Bhitor (Rossano Brazzi), is ritually immolated in a lavish ceremony where his other wife, Anjuli's half sister, is expected to commit ritual suttee. Only after she is released from her marriage is Anjuli free to follow her heart. Based on M.M. Kaye's beloved novel, <I>The Far Pavilions</I> tells the haunting love story of Anjuli and Ash (Ben Cross) against the spectacular backdrop of mid-19th-century colonial India, replete with accurate historical and cultural details. Full of battle, treachery, intrigue, passion, and prejudice, the film brims with stunning sights, from the peaks of the Himalayas to the famed palaces of Bhitor, remarkable battle scenes, and royal pageantry, including a lavish, several-day-long traditional Hindu wedding where the groom enters on an elephant. The all-star cast, including Omar Sharif, Sir John Gielgud, and Rupert Everett, truly brings the novel to life.

This two-DVD set includes interactive menus, a scene index, production notes, and a Kaye biography and book list. Originally released for television in 1984, <I>The Far Pavilions</I> has inspired viewers to travel to India, plus it has been included in numerous university courses because of its postcolonial and multicultural themes. This film will appeal to viewers interested in postcolonialism or Indian history and culture as well as anyone who loves a good romance. <I>--Tara Chace</I>

Had read the book and waited a long time for the DVD to come out. It follows the book well and I enjoyed viewing

    4 out of 5 stars Classic Romance.......2007-01-08

This is a classic romance story, along the same lines as Dr. Zhivago. Basically, you have two people who are in love. But circumstances and events that are larger than they are keep them apart. Ash and Anjeuli love one another, and yet, the choices they make keep them apart. Not only their choices, but also the customs and traditions of the times continually stand in the way of them being together.

The romance is only given a short amount of screen time, however. There is no shortage of action and adventure. This is a period full of war and conflict after all. The conflict between the British and the Emir of Afghanistan, as well as the political manipulations happening in the court of the Maharajah continually serve to spice up the plot.

Ash, played by a young Ben Cross, is an officer in the British army. And Anjeuli, played by a young Amy Irving, is an Indian princess. Ash was assigned to accompany the Princesses Anjeuli and Sushila to Bhitor. The Princesses are to marry the ruler of Bhitor, and Ash has been assigned to command the escort party. Ash and Anjeuli fall in love during the journey. Anjeuli chooses to go through with the marriage and stays with her husband. Meanwhile, Ash has been assigned to Afghanistan to help the British establish their presence in that part of the world.

Without spoiling the story for you any further, let me recommend this movie to you. If you liked Dr. Zhivago, you will like this movie. If you liked A Passage to India, you will love this movie. I would also like to add that this is one of Amy Irving's best performance, in my opinion. Ben Cross, Sir John Gielgud, and Omar Sharif make up the rest of the excellent cast.

2 out of 5 stars The Far Pavillion movie direction.......2006-12-24

I was quite bored throughout the movie. Amy Irving looks sickly and she has been made to look very ugly. The Kings and Princess' in those times in India enjoyed good clothes and good living. The dresses worn even by the royals are shown to be very cheap. The royal processions shown are shown to be worse than the poor tribals. The movie would be better to watch if it was directed by someone who understood Old Indian royal life. Overall a poor depiction of royal life in India.

3 out of 5 stars Did not hold my attention very well (2.5 Stars).......2006-06-09

I may be in the minority here, but The Far Pavilions was just not that interesting to me (I have never read the book so I am solely commenting on the DVD). The story just lulled along, forcing viewers to watch many slow-paced battle scenes and little side plots; Anjuli and Ash, the "star crossed lovers", were hardly ever even together in the movie. It took me a while to get through the entire five hours.

I thought Ben Cross was perfect in his role as Ash, but there was severe miscasting in the role of Anjuli! Amy Irving is a good actress, but the producers should have cast someone more to the character's description. While I realize that Anjuli was of mixed blood (Russian, I believe), they should have cast an actress with at least SOME Indian in her. Irving looks as if her face was painted to make her complexion look darker and that hideous eyeliner...Basically, she stuck out like a sore thumb against the rest of the authentically Indian cast.

To end with, the picture quality was awful. I realize the movie was made in 1984, but my 1939 remastered DVD of Gone With the Wind looks ridiculously better. Viewers are not able to fully appreciate the lush visuals and location shots the movie has to offer. Also, the miniseries was initially divided into six episodes, but one cannot tell on this DVD where they begin and end. It is divided into a Part I and Part II, and Part I cuts off at an inappropriate point where it seems they are still talking. No bonus footage or extras. I suggest they come out with a new remastered version.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Love Story.......2006-03-19

The Far Pavilions is a wonderful love story set in India during the Britsh rule. Ben Cross is great as Ash the English boy raised in India by his nurse. This movie is well worth viewing and owning. I have seen it over and over and never get tired of watching. Very well done.

Premise and title are the only elements this low-budget military drama shares with the 2001 Gene Hackman-Owen Wilson theatrical feature, but those seeking a dose of action won't be disappointed, despite the lack of on-screen star power. Nicholas Gonzalez (Resurrection Boulevard) and Matt Bushell star as Navy SEALs stranded in North Korea after a mission to destroy a nuclear plant is aborted; a brace of dependable character actors (including Keith David, Bruce McGill, and Glenn Morshower) debates with President Peter Coyote on the best plan of action to bring the troops home safely. Writer/producer/director James Dodson's approach may strike some as less than subtle, but he keeps the film's pace brisk and the action heavy, and yields some commendable results on what is clearly a limited budget. The DVD includes an audio commentary track by Dodson, as well as a pair of making-of featurettes and the original trailer. --Paul Gaita

2 out of 5 stars Yet Another In-Name-Only Sequel: Equally Unique Political Background, Much Less Actions.......2007-03-27

Though it is a low-budget, in-name-only sequel to the Gene Hackman / Owen Wilson film made in 2001, "Behind Enemy Lines 2: Axis of Evil" has one new and bold idea that is certainly interesting. The newer film tries to employ the standard action flick formula against the recent political and historical background around and since the 1994 framework accord between North Korea and the United States. The film has even a neat twist in the story, which refers to the real-life event in 2004, a mushroom cloud that was allegedly witnessed in North Korea.

The story begins promisingly. It is about the mission of the Navy SEAL team to destroy a missile site found in North Korea. When they start to drop out of an airplane flying over the target area, however, the order to abort the mission arrives. The order came too late and four soldiers are left `behind enemy's line.' It is contrived, and considering the geography of Korea, jumping from the sky is too risky and highly implausible (going from the sea is much easier), but well, it is still OK.

Unfortunately the film goes downhill from there. The actions themselves are not bad, but they are poorly edited. Many reviewers (including me) are complaining about the shaky camera, but more problematic is the lack of suspense that was felt in the original "Behind Enemy Lines' or "BAT 21." Instead of giving the thrilling scenes of how US military headquarter communicate the isolated SEALS through the radio and other media, it shows us painful tortures, one old `taxi' and a bizarre car accident on the country road. Frankly I still don't see the point of the last two episodes.

The film also shows us the game of international politics in White House with Peter Coyote's US President and Bruce McGill's stereotyped general. During the discussion on the consequences of the attack on North Korea, Ambassador of South Korea shows up, but the names of Japan and China are not mentioned in this film, which is I think very strange.

Unlike other action flicks `like "Stealth," "Die Another Day" and, yes, "Team America: World Police," "Behind Enemy Lines 2: Axis of Evil" tries to incorporate real on-going events into action film. It's a bold step (especially when North Korea really announced its nuclear test in 2006), but still it must be said the film's story is weak, and actions need better choreography.

5 out of 5 stars movie is just as good as the first part.......2007-03-12

I Have no Idea what these folks talk about. movie is just as good as the first part and you'll never be bored till the last minutes. it's pure action with very good and accurate story and line. and about that handycam stuff, thas not annoying and that either helped movie to be a great action/war movie. I recommend it and Although it's not an oscar worthy movie like "Black Hawk Down" I gave it 5 stars to increase the rating. It's real grade is 4 stars.

1 out of 5 stars This is hard to look at, gives me a headache........2007-02-27

They use that stupid constant camera jerking around fake action so you can't even watch a scene in it. Poor plot, poor acting, waste of time.

    3 out of 5 stars Weak Professionalism.......2007-01-26

First of all; the camera use and the effects seem to be cool at the beginning, but the director abused those too much to the irritating level. The movie and the plot were good. However, the action scenes seem to involve a lot of trigger happy seals and the "spray and pray that you'll hit the target" kind of thing. It looks like although the recoil of the real AK47 never bother these guys. Professional soldiers such as the US NAVY SEAL should be firing in volleys of 3-4 at max, not trying to empty the magazine by squeezing the trigger like they do. In addition, the part that they run after a random Korean kid all the way into the village full of DPRK soldiers is unacceptable. Furthermore, some of the South Korean covert ops seem to be just plain "stupid" (two that ran for the jeep in the middle of crossfire and one that jumped on the barrels just to throw a grenade -_-"), but overall it is an exciting film to watch.

3 out of 5 stars A film to watch while eating.......2007-01-10

Behind Enemy lines II: Axis of Evil is not a bad film, it's just not a great film. It's entertaining to watch while eating or relaxing. I enjoyed it, but it's not the kind of film you have to think about what, why, or when while watching. After viewing, I went about my normal routine, not thinking about the film, but not upset that I watched it.
