This absolute winner, based on a stage play by Jonathan Harvey and adapted by him, is a kind of enchanted, urban slice-of-life tale about a gay teen, Jamie (Glen Berry), who is in love with the boy next door, Ste (Scott Neal). Hampering Jamie's progress on the romantic front is his fear that his mother (Linda Henry) will find out, as well as concern over complicating Ste's existing problems. <I>Beautiful Thing</I> is a relationship movie, to be sure, but that description doesn't really describe the buoyant tone of this British television production. Democratic in its inclusive regard for each character (whether camera-pretty or not), the film--well-directed by Hettie Macdonald--is full of surprises. Chief among them is the terrific personality of Jamie's mum, a strong and independent woman who truly worries over and adores her son. But this is a movie involved in a kind of happy dialogue with itself: the tunes of Mama Cass, for instance, play a part in both the story and overall ambience, while a strategic placement of the Rodgers and Hammerstein chestnut "Sixteen Going on Seventeen" during an act of love is fun and exciting. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Description

A pair of teenage boys growing up in a working-class neighborhood become aware of their homosexuality. While both were vaguely aware they might be gay, neither had ever acted on their impulses. Once they decide that they're attracted to each other, neither is sure just what to do. Winner of 4 International Film Festival Awards.

4 out of 5 stars beautiful thing.......2007-06-02

enjoyed the story. only problem was the strong accent. difficult to hear the sound. didnt understand a word from the black girl though it was well acted. loved the ending.

1 out of 5 stars Beautiful Thing, impossible to understand.......2007-05-29

This movie is very difficult to understand, is spoken in a British jargon which is impossible to follow. It does not have any subtitles or a better translation to an American Standard English. I recommend buying it only if you live in the UK and understand their jargon.

4 out of 5 stars snap.......2007-05-24

A good coming of age/romantic comedy. The Brit humor is always good for a laugh.Would watch this one again just to catch all the one liners.

5 out of 5 stars I never tire of seeing this movie. It IS a beautiful thing!.......2007-05-06

As a gay man, I have to say the plot of this film takes me back to a time when I first started to find myself and, eventually, came out. "Some things are just hard to say", says Jamie (one of the teenagers in the film), effectively coming out to his mother. I remember saying that or something not unlike it at the time.

Jamie and Ste live next door to each other, and when Ste's father and brother have physically abused him (an ongoing problem), Sandra (Jamie's mother) takes him in for the night, whereupon he and Jamie begin their self-discovery.

Perhaps my favourite scene is when Jamie and Ste are running through the woods together when they finally stop to begin a long, passionate kiss. It always brings tears to my eyes because I feel so happy for them, not to mention deliriously envious.

I think the gay theme of this film is mild enough as to not offend too many people if they are already open to viewing a film covering such a topic. However, some of the language is quite crude - the "C" word appears a number of times. I've read many American reviewers stating they have trouble with the accent so I suspect British TV and films are not widely shown there (perhaps there is little interest). Being Australian I fortunately have no trouble understanding both accent and colloquialisms.

I've seen plenty of gay films before. Most have not had that great a storyline or lasting feeling to them. Beautiful Thing has genuine effects on the emotions, especially if you can relate to the main characters. It is definitely my favourite film in this genre. I just love it!

5 out of 5 stars Do Something You Won't Regret.......2007-04-02

This movie is awesome! It's definetly a repeat I watched it again and again. Its entertaining to watch and there's great music throughout.

The Ronald Reagan 1980s were all about going back to the future--rewriting the past to better suit Reagan's upbeat vision of the present. So, Sylvester Stallone's John Rambo (a psychotic, shell-shocked Vietnam vet in the original film, transformed into a flag-waving hero in the sequel) was able to go back to Southeast Asia and "correct" history by decisively (and single-handedly) winning that messy ol' war on behalf of America. Red Dawn is a paranoid cold-war cautionary tale that presents us not with a rosy alternative past, but with an ominous vision of the future, metaphorically plopping a piece of Russian-occupied Afghanistan into America's back yard. In this celebration of the Second Amendment, storm troopers from the Evil Empire descend upon the inadequately defended United States and hold America hostage. Stealthily avoiding the invaders, a motley group of red-blooded, small-town, gun-toting teenagers go underground to form the Wolverines, a guerilla resistance squad dedicated to making those Russkies rue the day they parachuted onto U.S. soil. It's a darn good thing those kids had the right to keep and bear arms, huh! Written and directed by macho filmmaker John Milius, the self-described "Zen fascist" who also cowrote Apocalypse Now, as well as the horrifying shark story Robert Shaw tells in Jaws. The cast includes Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, Jennifer Grey (a few years before she and Swayze took up Dirty Dancing), Charlie Sheen, Powers Boothe, Harry Dean Stanton, and Ben Johnson. Red Dawn was a commercial success, although audiences invariably split into two camps, finding it either patriotic or appalling. Whatever your verdict, the film remains a telling reflection of its era. --Jim Emerson

Description

Red Dawn opens with one of the most shocking scenes ever filmed; on a peaceful morning, through the windows of a high school classroom, students see paratroopers land on the varsity football field: the invasion of the United States has begun! As their town is overrun by foreign nationals, eight teenagers escape to the mountains. Taking the name of their high school football team, the Wolverines, they wage unremitting guerrilla warfare in defense of their parents, their friends and their country. Powerful, chilling and absolutely gripping, this outstanding film features some of today's most popular stars, including Patrick Swayze (Ghost), Charlie Sheen (Platoon), C. Thomas Howell (The Hitcher), Lea Thompson ("Caroline in the City"), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing) and veteran actor Harry Dean Stanton (Alien). When it comes to thrilling entertainment, Red Dawn wins the war with a vengeance!

Red dawn is a classic 80s movie from writer director John Milius. Milius also co wrote the screenplay for the brilliant Apocalypse Now which he shared an oscar nomination with Frances Ford Coppola.
I also learned this was the first movie to get a Pg-13 rating from the mpaa after public outcry of the violence in pg rated movies such as Indiana Jones and the temple of doom, and Gremlins.(movieweb)
I own about 1200 dvds and i actually do not have this one, so i will splurge and get this new collectors edition. I've listed some info below about the new version i found on the internet hopefully it helps. Thanks for reading.

4 out of 5 stars WOLVERINES !!.......2007-06-20

Though some people may think that this movie is far fetched because it depicts teenage men and women taking on a communist invasion, I believe that this is a very good movie.
If somehow something like this did happen I think that it is very likely that there would be civilian freedom fighters, look at past wars and invasions and this happens. If you were in this situation would you set back and let them win or would you take up arms and fight for your family, friends, country and freedom.
This movie brings about a very strong feeling of patriotism ( Something our country needs much more of) and is very good to watch around independence day.
"WOLVERINES!!!!"

4 out of 5 stars Red Dawn Revisited.......2007-05-21

The first time I saw this in the mid 80s I thought it was kind of cool, with great action, and a bit over the top. I never bought it because I just didn't think it was worth owning. Over the years as I have seen this on TV I realized this was worthy of a revisit to my initial opinion. As I have grown in age, I realized these young teens are thrown into a whole different world and their over-acting if you will, is quite honestly nothing more than I think a teen would do when stressed to this point. After all they lose their families and their world is turned upside down. What am I talking about, any adult would over-act as well in this kind of post holocaust situation. Basicly become distraught and over emotional.

So all things considered this movie deserves much more credit than it typically gets from critics. It is a good fictional story. The action and special effects are well done. I finally ordered a copy for my DVD library. Don't wait till you have seen it at least a half dozen times on TV like me. The commercials are to painful for that. You can even buy it with "Navy Seals" in a two pack for less than fifteen dollars. "Navy Seals" is a reasonably good movie as well and for about seven dollars and change each it is a good deal. Navy Seals has Charlie Sheen, Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton, Dennis Haysbert, and several other familiar faces. Good action movie that most people will enjoy. So grab a Big Gulp and a big bowl of popcorn and make an afternoon of it.

5 out of 5 stars Coming Soon..........2007-04-29

Special Edition DVD coming out on 7-17-07. Loved this movie when it came out in '84 when I was a kid, and still enjoy my yearly viewing of it.

1 out of 5 stars Oy Vey!.......2007-04-28

I thought about giving this film an intellectual review, but that would have been a complete waste of time. Watching this film could be compared to listening to a C.W. McCall album with a bad case of nausea or perhaps something scatological. Simply pathetic. The only redeeming role was performed by William Smith, who was the ONLY actor who seemed to exhibit talent, putting Sheen and Swayze to shame as acting professionals. This film would only have value for students who are seriously studying Russian and at that would be applicable to Chapter 22 with Smith's "I am a Hunter" speech. This film is a good example of how you can't win a game when only one person on the team shows up.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars beautiful musical version of the timeless tale.......2007-05-22

This great version of BEAUTY AND THE BEAST comes from the fondly-remembered Cannon MovieTales series. Rebecca DeMornay and John Savage star in the lead roles, with lavish costumes and a delicate musical score.

Beauty (Rebecca DeMornay), the youngest daughter of a widowed merchant, spends her days caring and tending to her lazy brothers and sisters. When her father angers the mysterious occupant of a castle, Beauty selflessly offers to live with the hideous Beast (John Savage). Every night, Beauty dreams of a handsome prince who begs her to find him...

This version of the romantic fairytale takes it's cue from the classic 1946 French movie "La Belle et la Bete" (directed by Jean Cocteau) with it's lavish costumes and production design. There are several lovely musical numbers--the main highlight being "If You See with Your Heart", a tender duet for the Beast and a homesick Beauty.

The Cannon MovieTales series was filmed--rather economically--in Israel; you'll note that many of the films feature the same sets and costumes. It's refreshing to see Rebecca DeMornay playing a naive innocent (years before producers began casting her as sexy psychopaths in films like "The Hand That Rocks the Cradle").

Most of the Cannon MovieTales have found their way to DVD (the others include "Hansel & Gretel", "Sleeping Beauty", "Rumplestiltskin", "The Frog Prince", "Snow White", and "Red Riding Hood").

Children of the 80's rejoice! (Single-sided, single-layer disc).

2 out of 5 stars The stars are only for Rebeca and the story.......2007-02-27

Come on! I can't believe that the Mr. below said that this is the basis for all the beauty and the beast features! You must see the Jean Cocteau's Beauty and the beast, wich is truly a great film, and the inspiring of all other good versions (Faery tale theatre of Shelley Duvall, with Klaus Kinsky as the beast, and Roger Vadim as director), and the crap versions (this one, disneys). This one is boring, low paced, and a bad copy. The only thing of this film is the beauty. But i prefer to see her in the movie with Michael Fox.

4 out of 5 stars The Basis of all Beauty & the Beast Stories.......2007-02-21

This movie was produced before the Disney movie, and you can see where they got many of their ideas. This movie was produced before the TV show, and again you can see where they got their ideas.

It is a creative enchanted look at a fun fantasy! It is worth the money and the time you will spend watching it. And ... if you believe in romance, this is the movie for you! It made a great Valentine's present.

5 out of 5 stars very cute and sticks to the origional story!.......2007-02-09

I just recived this dvd and am very happy with it! I now have all the cannon movie tales on vhs and dvd. I had never seen this. I love the songs and lavish costumes and sets. my favorite song is " if you see with your heart" what a beautiful song and well written amd composed. This collection of live action fairy tales are MUCH better than the faerie tale theatre versions. If only cannon had decided to make a more complete series. These movies are wonderful!

5 out of 5 stars Beauty and the Beast.......2007-01-09

It was great to see that they have the Cannon Tales on DVD now! My daughter and I used to watch it together when she was an adolescent and now she is going to be a mother herself. I purchased this so that my grandchildren will be able to view the movies that their mother watched when she was little. A fairytale with the stars!

4 out of 5 stars Quite Funny, Stefan........2007-06-24

"Clifford" was ready for release in 1991 but it's distributor, Orion, was on the verge of bankruptcy. Despite the box office and critical success of "Dances With Wolves" and with "Silence of the Lambs" and "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey" in the can Orion made too many blunders. Being Woody Allen's distributor probably didn't put any money in the coffers. "Love Field" with Michelle Pfeiffer and this film collected dust until the court matters could be settled. When "Clifford" was finally released theatrically in 1994 it was savaged by the critics and ignored by the public. I never thought too much about this movie until a critic for "Entertainment Weekly" named it as a guilty pleasure. By happenstance I came across the film at a local video store when they were liquidating their stock. To be frank I was expecting "Problem Child" but "Clifford" is more akin to "Pee Wee's Big Adventure". Credit the comic mastery of Martin Short for finding within the rotten kid he is playing some endearing qualities. It also helps that Short has great reparte with Charles Grodin as his harried Uncle Martin. With those unfamiliar with Grodin it would behoove them to check out his work with Robert DeNiro in the underrated "Midnight Run". Mary Steenburgen is wasted, though, in the stock girlfriend role. Great script that has consistently funny gags and lines. Why didn't this film find it's audience in 1994? Probably because they marketed it as a family film which it definitely isn't because there are too many risque elements in it. For teens and those teens at heart this is greatly entertaining.

3 out of 5 stars It has it's moments.......2007-05-12

not the best but with some moments that are really funny... sometimes gets a little bit boring, but in general it's ok... very 90's.... if you like the kind of comedies made in those years this is for you

5 out of 5 stars funny, funny, funny.......2007-01-29

I watched this film, over and over, a good few years ago with my oldest child. We loved it. Got it recently to watch with my younger children (12-15 years). They loved it and have watched it several times already. It is the sort of film that gets better each time you watch it. We love Martin Short. I really think this is his best film. He is hilerious as Clifford. I would recommend this film to anyone. A real family film. only problem it is only available from amazon america so be careful about it playing in the uk.

5 out of 5 stars I can't give this enough stars.......2007-01-18

Wow I just saw this movie on cable and was so dissapointed they rated it 1 star. This movie all depends on you. If your into superficial comedy like Beerfest and Harold and Kumar, this movie isn't for you. This movie is all about that little subtle something, that seems bizarre when analyzed but is definately from the divine. It is a comedy that made me almost pee my pants, it all depends on your state of mind while watching it. If your in a bad mood you wont like it, if your in a good mood you will wanna watch it again. Again it is soooooo funny I immediately went to review it and to buy it for myself.

1 out of 5 stars At least it tries (sometimes).......2006-12-08

I rented this recently and watched it with friends because I so-vaguely remembered it from my younger years, but the result was pretty disappointing. I suppose it's worth a glance, because it's never unwatchable, but damnit it just isn't very funny.

I'm not a --huge-- fan of Martin Short but I do get a kick out of most of his antics, and considering myself a heterosexual male, I'll openly admit I don't think I've ever been attracted to a man as much as Charles Grodin (in a completely non-sexual way). Thus, it's that much more disheartening that this movie always works at barely working... It never crosses the line into complete debauchery, but it rides it with the type of hard-headed stubbornness Short's Clifford exudes.

Grodin goes as psycho as he can in the midst of a demon child considering it's a PG rated flick (and it'd never get away with a PG rating these days... it's too twisted), and it's always mildly amusing, but their dynamic just isn't that funny, sad to say. Short's Clifford, likewise, is curiously nasty and perverse (with his obvious sexual fancy for Steenburgen -- just look at that face whenever he's around her), but his exuberance in bringing this unique spawn to fruition rarely hits the the funny mark.

Maybe it's just me. Maybe it's not. I'm a fan of most the people involved in this disaster, but none of their real strengths are overly apparent. Even still, while I readily admit I don't find 'Clifford' too much of a riot myself, I won't put those off who find it delectable... If nothing else, 'Clifford' is unique. I just wish I could taste that sense of bittersweet, opposed to my own (albeit tolerable) gag reflex.

<I>Without a Clue</I> is an underrated comedy featuring stellar teamwork by two great actors, Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley. This Sherlock Holmes pastiche with a twist stars Kingsley as physician, writer, and self-effacing super-sleuth Dr. John Watson, who channels his genius for deduction into lucrative stories about Holmes. Watson wants the world to believe the fictional private eye actually exists, posing a problem when a steady stream of troubled souls come seeking Holmes's help. The doctor's prescription: hire a two-bit, drunken, skirt-chasing actor (Caine) to portray the Great Detective, an arrangement that causes Watson consternation whenever "Holmes" tries to improvise his way through a case. Wonderful comic timing and tension make <I>Without a Clue</I> a delight; Caine, particularly, gets a lot of mileage out of the faux Holmes's grand efforts to appear a genius. Henry Mancini's score adds a touch of old Hollywood gloss, and Thom Eberhardt (<I>Night of the Comet</I>) directs. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Description

Suppose for a moment that Dr. Watson was the real brains behind Sherlock Holmes? The result is anything but elementary! Academy AwardÂ(r) winners* Michael Caine and Ben Kingsley deliver stellar performances as a delightful duo, an 1890s Odd Couple (Los Angeles Times) in this madcapmystery that's 'the most hilarious Sherlock Holmes adventure of them all ('sneak Previews )! But to protect his reputation as a physician, he hires bumbling, boozy, out-of-work actor Reginald Kincaid (Caine) to play the part of his fictional creation, Sherlock Holmes. Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Kingsley and Holmes as comic geniuses; 4+ 1/2 stars of sparkling spoof!!!.......2007-05-19

What a joy to see two of the finest actors on the planet, Ben Kingsley and Michael Caine in a comedy! Academy Award winners, both,WITHOUT A CLUE is a great reminder of how real comedy done by classically trained actors can be so much more rewarding, especially Ben Kingsley who is more noted for his serious roles. Caine on the other hand has often played a lout and a buffoon before (SAVING GRACE)with great effect. Both show why they have such long and distinguised careers as they, with great agilility, bring Dr. Watson and Mr. Holmes to life in this funny and ficticious role reversal.

It is not necessary to have an indepth working knowledge of the Sherlock Holmes stories to appreciate this wonderful film, though knowledge of the Sir Arthur Conan Doyle stories does make this screenplay all the more clever!

The great Henry Mancini provides a wonderful romp of a soundtrack fitting for this sparkling spoof on the team of Holmes and Watson.....or is it Watson and somewhat if none of Holmes at all???

Beautifully filmed on locations in and around London it is a real shame that WITHOUT A CLUE was released in a year when comedies such as BEETLEJUICE and A FISH CALLED WANDA as well as heavyweights DANGEROUS LIAISONS, THE LAST TEMPTATION OF CHRIST and RAIN MAN were garnering all of the praise .Perhaps in a different year WITHOUT A CLUE , Kingsley and Caine would have received the recognition so richly deserve!

Both vhs and dvd are adequate for WITHOUT A CLUE as they are both in FULL SCREEN and both have wonderful colour saturation.

Another suggested companion film spoofing the Holmes stories would be YOUNG SHERLOCK HOLMES.

5 out of 5 stars a novel view in figure holmes.......2007-05-07

4 out of 5 stars Fun, frothy comedy crime caper.......2007-04-16

This 1988 Sherlock Holmes spoof boasts Michael Caine as Reginald Kincaid, an occasionally drunk, often womanizing actor (with gambling debts as well) who's recruited by Dr. John Watson (Ben Kingsley) to play the part of Holmes, whose stories Watson writes and sells to Strand Magazine. The premise is a clever one, and both Caine and Kingsley carry off their roles splendidly--as mayhap may be said in the UK--providing enough wit and even slapstick to generate a nifty flow of chortles as the movie progresses.

Even the notorious Professor Moriarty is included here and while the movie is decidedly lighter than air, it's immense fun to see a group of talented actors having fun themselves spoofing the most well known literary sleuth of all time. Dudley Moore's former partner Peter Cook shows up in a small role--another bit of fun--and Jeffrey Jones is perfect as the semi-dopey Inspector Lestrade.

Caine and Kingsley play extremely well off each other; the movie almost doesn't need anyone else. But of course a mystery plot demands other characters and so they are there including, of course, the aforementioned Moriarty (Paul Freeman) who supplies the dastardly plot point of ultimately bringing down the entire British economy. Caine is funny and, at times, absolutely hilarious.

Lots of fun and definitely recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful.......2007-03-17

My Russian born soulmate and I recently watched this movie (DVD) and I have to admit I was a bit nervous. I discovered shortly after we started dating that the Russians have their own movie renditions of Sherlock Holmes and I must admit they are quite excellent. I was a bit afraid that she might find the whole idea of a comedy based on Holmes rather rediculous. I was also a bit concerned for myself, as I'd never even HEARD of this movie before we picked it up at the store the other day, despite the fact that it came out in 1988. But, given that it WAS a Holmes story and starred Ben Kingsley and Michael Caine, we figured "how bad can it be?".

Well, I'm happy to report that we both thoroughly enjoyed this movie, both as Holmes fans and as folks who enjoy a good comedy now and then. I was a bit surprised just how much and how often my girlfriend laughed. When we'd finished watching it, she said she not only liked it but considered it one of her favorites. This coming from a woman who judges both movies in general and Holmes movies in particular with a rather discerning eye.

Others have explained the plot well enough here so I'll just that the production values, acting and directing of this movie make it great fun for lovers of Holmes and comedy alike.

5 out of 5 stars "Thank you, gentlemen, I am touched." "I can vouch for that!".......2007-01-16

The reviewers who have said you don't have to be a Sherlock Holmes enthusiast who is familiar with the Holmes stories to enjoy this film are exactly right. I don't generally give in to hyperbole when reviewing a movie, so I won't go overboard with superlatives here, suffice to say that this is a charming, delightful and VERY funny satire! It really is. If you are reading this review and have never heard of this movie, or have heard of it but never got around to watching it because it didn't get rave reviews, don't let that deter you any longer! Buy or rent this movie and you will not be disappointed, I'm willing to bet.

The plotline and background of the film have already been reviewed here, so I won't repeat them. I will say that I first began watching this movie with luke warm hopes that I would enjoy it, but boy, did I enjoy it! The time flew by and I laughed almost all the way through it. Usually, movies with so many in-jokes, visual humor and tongue-in-cheek one-liners will have several jokes that fall flat, but very few, if any, do here.

The character of Mrs. Hudson has a prominent role in this film, and it turns out to be a blessing, as Pat Keen played the role to the hilt. Her comedic portrayal of the proper and sometimes haughty Mrs. Hudson of the books was hysterical! (Oops! Some unintended hyperbole there! Well, what the heck, she really was extremely funny and I was impressed at just how engaging Ms. Keen really is! I had never heard of her before this movie and I found myself searching online for roles she has had in other films.)

I give this five stars. Admittedly, I am a huge Holmes fan, but my daughter is not and when I loaned this movie to her, she returned it to me saying that she thought it was great. She even threw a couple of notable quotes at me from the film. I liken Without a Clue, in many ways, to the original version of The Out of Towners with Jack Lemmon, another film I reviewed last month. (NOT the new, inferior version with Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn). Like Without a Clue, it is also relatively unknown by many people and is a very underrated comedy.

As for the packaging, I too, like others, am disappointed that this DVD is only available in full screen version and take off half a star on my rating for that. I would gladly have paid a few bucks more for some extras, possibly a commentary by Caine or Kingsley (or best of all, BOTH), or even a short interview or two. But since I am not able to give it 4 1/2 stars, I have given it five, as it is clearly worth more than four. Confusing? Peace.

It's important to note that Spike Lee's drama is not titled <I>Son of Sam</I>. <I>Summer of Sam</I> doesn't chronicle the killer as much as the times: the blistering hot summer of 1977 when the Big Apple's psyche was taken hostage by the lone gunman. We spot the killer (Michael Badalucco) in his mad ramblings, but the film centers on two friends from the Bronx: Vinny and Ritchie (John Leguizamo, Adrien Brody). Vinny and his wife, Dionna (Mira Sorvino), bury a bad marriage (he cheats at a drop of a hat) in the disco halls of the area. Ritchie returns to the neighborhood sporting punk hair, punk clothes, and a British accent that immediately infuriates the neighborhood boys oozing far too much testosterone. Cops, local mob leaders, and the guys on the street all have ideas who the killer is; neighborhood loners to Reggie Jackson (in the midst of World Series heroism) are on their misguided lists of suspects. When the film looks at how the citizens faced the fearful times, Lee scores with his energetic camerawork and pop soundtrack. Yet the film is banal in its domestic dramatics. The film takes large detours into Vinny's home sex life (stagnant) and Ritchie's extracurricular activities. One of the marriage arguments--though real and well acted--is so long and cliché-ridden you wonder if someone fell asleep in the editing booth. Add the point-blank killings and nonstop vulgarity and you have Lee's most unpleasant film. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

This movie has all the marks of a bad porno movie; one animalistic and unrealistic sex scene after another loosely strewn together with a thin and uninspiring plot. One has a difficult time remembering the basic plot premise when every other scene is one more perversion splashed on the screen as if in attempts to shock us more than the previous scene. If you watch it at all, be sure you have the remote handy to fast-forward. Doing so will help you focus on what little plot their is and lesson the time you waste which you could have spent watching something worthwhile. If the Son of Sam murders of the late 1970's are your interest, you will find precious little about it here so do not bother. It is a very sad that Spike Lee, with hints of true talent, could release something that would not even pass for mediocre pornography - much less serious drama.

4 out of 5 stars Not a big fan of the Spikester.......2007-03-22

but, I do give credit when credits due. The movie was very well done, the cast was sincere and portrayed their characters with a real-ness that was believable. The dumb as dirt New York Italian men, the long suffering woman who can't enjoy sex but are as neurotic as the men who kept them down. And don't forget the humidity, which, I'm sure, if anyone ever did a scientific survey, would show more violence is committed in the sweltering summer than winter. The always entertaining and talented, John Leguizamo adds much to the overall sleazey, horrific, humidity laden story. Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Spike lee is a horrible director.......2007-02-01

During the sweltering summer of 1977, the notorious killer Son of Sam set New York City on edge. An accidental encounter with the homicidal maniac sends the life of a philandering Bronx hairdresser named Vinny (John Leguizamo) spinning out of control. As the police and vigilantes hunt the killer, Vinny's life unravels amid a haze of suspicion, drugs and promiscuity.

This film has the distinction of being the hands-down worst film I ever saw in the theater. It's so bad that I use it as a basis of comparison for other bad films "Dead Man on Campus? That's about a 30% Summer of Sam" "Last Action Hero? That's a 75% Summer of Sam" When I saw this film in the theater, about half the audience walked out in disgust and the other half toked up and watched the rest of the film high. I was in neither of these categories, sufficing to sit quietly, painfully, begging for it all to end. John Leguizamo should never be allowed near a camera again.

Didn't we learn our lesson from Spawn? Yikes, Lee, give it up. I mean, it'd be one thing to make bad films that have some sort of unintentional comedic quality so that at least those who are not awed by your B.S. can have a good chuckle or two, but your films are just painful to watch. Right after we got out of the theater, I screamed "I must watch a decent movie! Anything, I don't care! Let me have faith in film again!A little advice...Hey Spike, how about a movie about the serial killer next time?!

4 out of 5 stars Spike Lee captures the reality of Summer in New York City - Bad vibes.......2006-11-30

I think this is clearly Spike Lee's best movie. I am not a great fan of Spike Lee - I think he is a pretty repulsive individual and his movies generally fall down into hatred of White people, pornography and just general disrespect of everyone, especially women, but I will give Spike Lee credit that he does have a very good understanding for the look and feel of New York City in his time (70s) - he understands the hostile vibes of the street, various different racial, ethnic, class parts of New York City, with the various groups falling down into the same bad, hostile vibes. Summer of Sam shows you how disgusting and hateful New York City can become in the hot, hot Summer. Also, Lee does a great job of depicting a very interesting lower middle class Italian community that is completely hostile to all outsiders - all, hostile to Blacks, hostile to upper class White suburbanites that might want to date an Italian girl from the neighborhood, hostile to anything "different" like British punk rock music and a local guy from the neighborhood who tries to act like a British punk. The movie is very vulgar and violent, but yeah, New York City in the late 70s was violent and hostile. One of the best movies about New York.

1 out of 5 stars A terrible spike lee joint.......2006-09-25

This is what spike lee created? This movie was horrible...graphic sexual content repetitive vulgar language (F words) and a terrible storyline too. It should have never been made this way and spike should have never directed this movie either. He didn't even focus on the son of sam which is the name of this movie. Avoid this movie unless you want to see A rare overrated vulgar soft porno movie. For a good spike lee joint see DO THE RIGHT THING atleast he created a better storyline in that movie than this highly overratted garbage.

<I>Boy Meets World</I> joined the ABC network's successful "TGIF" lineup in 1993, and instantly distinguished itself from the dewy-eyed hokum that passes for much family viewing with its relative sophistication, emotional complexity, and smart, stylish dialogue. In a way, <I>Boy Meets World</I>, starring Ben Savage, picked up where ABC's <I>The Wonder Years</I> (1988-1993), featuring older brother Fred Savage, left off. Both shows looked at the world from the point of view of largely unformed and untested boys as they faced dilemmas concerning love, loyalty, and ethics within their families, among friends, and at school. But where <I>The Wonder Years</I> was an arch and poignant series with nostalgic, grown-up appeal--and which had a young hero often at a loss for words--<I>BMW</I> looked more like a broader, conventional sitcom where chatter never ceased. The show was and is more easily taken for granted, but its unusual gracefulness and wit can't be denied after a couple of viewings.

<I>Boy Meets World</I> lasted seven seasons, and one of the real pleasures of following the series is that its story and character changes are largely organic, rather than forced by cast departures or other pressures. Thus the auspicious first meeting of Savage's 11-year-old Cory Matthews and his classmate Topanga (Danielle Fishel) in season 1 leads, quite sweetly and logically, to a deeper relationship in subsequent seasons. Cory's attachment to his formidable yet compassionate 6th-grade teacher, Mr. Feeny (William Daniels in a tailor-made performance), who also happens to be Cory's neighbor, grows and deepens as Feeny eventually becomes the principal at Cory's high school and a mentor beyond. Season 1 also introduces Cory's likeable father (William Russ), a grocery store manager, and mother (Betsy Randle), a homemaker and realtor, as well as appealing siblings Eric (Will Friedle) and Morgan (Lindsay Ridgeway) and best friend Shawn (Rider Strong). A slightly surreal tone (a little similar to <I>Family Ties</I>) keeps the jokes coming, but <I>BMW</I> is at its most touching when Cory's awareness of and empathy for the needs of others expands. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars I now remember why I love this show so much!.......2007-06-15

I received the first season of Boy Meets World as a birthday gift from my brother. He got it for me because (a) I love to collect TV series on DVD, and (b) Boy Meets World was one of my favorite shows as a kid. I held off watching the DVD set mainly because it had been years since I've seen the first season and while it was my favorite show as a kid, I assumed it would be really cheasy and corny now.

My husband and I finally got around to watching it, and we were BOTH very pleasantly surprised! Sure, it had its cheasy moments, but overall the series was very funny and entertaining... even for two adults!

Yesterday we finished the season and now I'm buying seasons Two and Three. I was sad to hear that seasons 4-7 will not be coming to DVD because of a drop in sales (saw this when my husband "wiki'ed" the show). They don't make shows like this anymore!

5 out of 5 stars boy meets world petition.......2006-12-20

Remember back when Boy Meets World was part of your daily life? When you sat and laughed through seven seasons with Cory, Topanga, Shawn, Eric, and Mr. Feeny? We were there in the beginning, when they were 6th grade, to the end, when they separated off on their own. Weren't you sad when the season ended and it wasn't on DVD or VHS for that matter.

The first three seasons of this classic series has been released but when Buena Vista Home Entertainment saw that the sales were dropping they discontinued the DVD releases. Many of us like to wait until every season is released and buy them in a bundled boxset. Because of the low sales, we might not see seasons 4-7.

Please sign this petition if you want Buena Vista Home Entertainment to release a boxset for Boy Meets World: Seasons 1-7 (Complete).

If the set actually comes out, kindly purchase it so they actually realize how many fans there are.

Spread the word!! Just tell 2 people and tell them to do the same, at that rate there will be hundreds and thousands in no time.

5 out of 5 stars Boy Meets World: One of the Greatest shows made.......2006-11-14

Boy Meets World (BMW) first aired in the early ninties, and it stayed on the air about 10 years. Boy Meets world first appealed to elementary school children and tweens, but as the show stayed on the air, the writers very wisely changed the characters to be age appropriate. Issues talked about in the first few seasons were honestly, friendship and loyalty. As the Cory, Shawn and Topanga grew up, so did there problems. In Middle School and Highschool issues with Cults, God, abuse and Death became very real. The dilemas in college were more intense yet. Focusing on issues like adoption, Co-ed living, Sex, Alcohol, marriage and true love.

The creators kept the show fresh by shedding some early characters: Minkus, Mr. Turner and added "Fresh Meat" with Jack, Angela, and Rachel. Although, through it all, Mr. Feeny remains the wise Grandfatherly figure to Cory, Shawn and Topanga, and Mr. Matthews (Cory's Dad) is seen a Hardworking, Devoted Father to his wife and family and all of Cory's friends.

I'm 22 years old now, and looking back, I'm glad I watched this show instead of others that were on TV at the time. This show grew up with it's viewers and rewarded it's fans with simple lessons to help them along their way.

I AM SO HAPPY!
I think that's pretty good for seven (nine?) seasons of one of the funniest shows ever. PS. I only rated this 1 star because i HATE the first 3-4 seasons.
I love when Jack and Angela and Rachel come in!

5 out of 5 stars This isn't the sort of thing I usually review, but..........2006-05-15

...I absolutely love this show. I also love that other great show Smart Guy, which is sadly not on anymore, along with this. I just think it's sad how they've taken away all these great old shows that used to be on Disney Channel and replaced them with the incredibly stupid ones that are on there today. But then again, Disney is becoming more self-absorbed, and they really don't care anymore about what people think of them, so they're losing fans. I have friends who used to like Disney Channel, but not anymore. I really never watch it anymore either, because they got rid of everything that made it great. Certainly That's So Raven was funny for a while, but now it's just tiresome, predictable, and annoying. Lizzie Mcguire I never enjoyed because it's just plain dull. Phil of The Future was only funny for so long before it got to the same situation as TSR. Even Stevens is good but it's never on. Life With Derek seems like something I've seen a million times. The Suite Life of Zack and Cody & Hanah Montana both have the same problem as TSR and POTF. I won't even talk about the animated cartoon shows because I find them all ridiculous, and The Proud Family is the only one I would ever consider watching because it actually is pretty good. But Boy Meets World, Smart Guy, and Even Stevens are the only reasons I ever watched Disney Channel, aside from the awesome movies that used to be on (just like with the shows, none of the movies they play anymore are even remotely good). I just don't get why Disney got rid of all their good shows and movies and replaced them with what they play nowadays. This show has one of the best casts of a sitcom I think I've ever seen, as did Smart Guy. These two shows are creative, funny, imaginative, touching, and very very very hard not to like. If I could buy this DVD I would, but I can't. And of coarse Smart Guy isn't even on DVD, and it was only on the air for so long before they got rid of it, and it was also one of my favorite sitcoms ever. Smart Guy was as good as Boy Meets World, because it also had an awesome cast and pretty creative storyline. I reccomend this DVD to anyone who misses the good old days, and/or who just loves this show, like me, and also all the other DVD's of BMW. But don't bother watching Disney Channel unless you're just into stupid shows, because everything that's come out on Disney over the past four years has been just plain dumb. Oh, I forgot to mention Sister Sister, which is also a really good show (at least the first several seasons before Tia & Tamara get boyfriends). That one is also just as good as Boy Meets World, Even Stevens, and Smart Guy. If that show is on DVD, I reccomdn it as well.
