Three days in the summer of 1863, at a place called Gettysburg. Although it received a theatrical release, this four-hour depiction of the bloody Civil War battle was shot as a made-for-television film. But no taint of cheapness or shortcuts should stick to this magnificent picture (well, except maybe for those phony-looking mustaches). Based on Michael Shaara's book <I>The Killer Angels</I>, this film takes a refreshingly slow, thorough approach to the intricacies of battle. In ordinary circumstances, those intricacies might seem of importance only to fans of military strategy or Civil War enthusiasts, yet in <I>Gettysburg</I> they come across as the very stuff of life, death, and unexpected heroism. If the film has a problem, it's that it climaxes too early: the first long segment, detailing the struggle of a "civilian soldier," Union Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain (Jeff Daniels), to hold his ground against long odds, is an enthralling piece of moviemaking. Daniels, in a heartbreaking performance, does his best film work. Other cast members include Tom Berenger, Sam Elliott, and Martin Sheen as Robert E. Lee. Richard Jordan, in his final role, gives a powerhouse performance as Confederate general Lewis A. Armistead. Oh, and you can also try to spot Ted Turner, whose company produced the film, as a Confederate soldier. Writer-director Ronald F. Maxwell seems inspired by the gravity of the battle; long as it is, every moment of Gettysburg is informed by a nobility of purpose. <I>--Robert Horton</I>
Customer Reviews:
Gettysburg.......2007-06-12
Gettysburg is a great movie that was inspired by one of the most decisive battles during the Civil War. Ronald Maxwell, the director, hired a historain, James McPherson so help him in making sure the battle scenes were as true as they actually happened in 1863. Gettysburg has three days of fighting along with events that led up to the war making it very gory and action-packed. There is alot of death in this movie but since Gettysburg was one of the bloodiest battles with 50,000 American casualties, the amount of death in the movie is appropriate.
The first day of fighting consists of Buford trying to maintain his position in Gettysburg to make sure that the Union army has the best land position. The second day of fighting is centrally located at Cemetery Hill, Little Round Top, and Culp's Hill. The third and final day at Gettysburg consisted of one of the most famous battles at Gettysburg: Pickett's Charge. This is the day that Lee realizes that he has to retreat due to too many Confederate losses.
This movie is, historically, very correct. The locations of the battles are historicall accurate along with the general's names. Mostly everything in this movie was, in McPherson's eyes, historically accurate. One can learn alot about the Civil War by watching this movie because it shows how the soldiers felt and lived and the effects of war on them. It also talks about past and upcoming issues in the war. This was a great historical movie but also very entertaining and i would recommend it to anybody that was interested, or wants to become knowledgable about the Civil War.
Historical Referance.......2007-05-24
I found this movie to be an excellant composite of historical facts and charactors.
Heavilly based on the book "Killer Angels" by Michael Shaara.
For Civil War Enthusiasts..........2007-04-19
Turner Pictures' "Gettysburg" is the lengthy but fascinating dramatization of Michael Shaara's classic Civil War novel "The Killer Angels." At mini-series length and populated with an army's worth of solid actors, "Gettysburg" delivers the gripping story of the three-day battle as experienced by some of the key personalities.
Among the highpoints:
Sam Elliot as hardbitten Union Cavalry General John Buford, who recognized the value of the terrain at Gettysburg and whose decision to stand there helps bring on the battle.
Jeff Daniels is absolutely superb as Lieutenant Colonel Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain of the 20th Maine, a professor at Bowdoin College become a leader of men at war. Jeff Daniels manages to capture both the intelligence and the determination that won Chamberlain a Medal of Honor in the desperate struggle for the end of the Union line at Little Round Top.
Tom Berenger gives a nuanced and conflicted performance as Confederate General Longstreet, Lee's most reliable Corps Commander, who advises Lee against the Battle at Gettysburg and who must overcome his better instincts to execute Lee's orders.
Martin Sheen does his best to deliver as Confederate General Robert E. Lee, but only just fails to capture the charisma and the hidden steel that made Lee such a deadly and successful battlefield commander for so long. Perhaps the best of his performance in this movie is his meeting with his missing cavalry commander, J.E.B. Stuart, after the second day of battle.
The movie was filmed over the actual ground at Gettysburg using properly equipped re-enactors who add much authenticity to the battle scenes. The sharp-eyed viewer will enjoy picking out a number of actors hiding behind more or less authentic period whiskers. The magnificent score adds to the appreciation of what was at stake at Gettysburg, while the prologue and epilogue provide a haunting sense of the harsh fates awaiting many of the key players in the battle.
This movie is most highly recommended to fans of the Civil War who are prepared to overlook some TV-movie production shortfalls for an entertaining and educational dramatization of the Civil War's most fateful battle.
LOVED IT!!!!!!!!!.......2007-04-14
Gettysburg may seem kinda long for most people, but it is defenitley worth the time! I have watched it many, many times over! Civil war buff or not, you need to watch it!
Fine depiction of three days of horror and honor..........2007-03-31
I think the four-hour saga of "Gettysburg" might be one of Ted Turner's enduring positive gifts to the world. This is worth seeing just for the performances of Jeff Daniels as Joshua Chamberlain, the heroic Yankee, and Kevin Conway as Sgt. Buster Kilrain, the non-commissioned officer who saw his worth and gave him confidence. The fact that it was filmed on the actual battlefield (with modern roads, buildings and monuments erased via computer) is a plus. It is a balanced mixture of talk, both brave and brooding, and action, both glorious and gory.

A movie that only true horror buffs could love, <I>Army of Darkness</I> is officially part 3 in the wild and wacky Evil Dead trilogy masterminded by the perversely inventive director Sam Raimi, who would later serve as executive producer of the popular syndicated TV series <I>Hercules: The Legendary Journeys.</I> Raimi's favorite actor, Bruce Campbell, returns as Ash (hero of the first two Evil Dead flicks), a hardware-store clerk who is magically transported--along with his beat-up Oldsmobile and a chainsaw attachment for his severed left forearm--to the brutal battlefields of the 14th century. He quickly assumes power (who else in the Middle Ages packs a shotgun and a chainsaw?), and unites his band of medieval knights against the dreaded Army of the Dead. Raimi gleefully subverts almost every horror-movie cliché as he serves up a nonstop parade of blood, gore, and vicious sword-bearing skeletons--an affectionate homage to animator Ray Harryhausen's classic <I>Jason and the Argonauts</I>. The frantic action is fun while it lasts, but even at 80 minutes <I>Army of Darkness</I> nearly wears out its welcome. You know that Raimi can maintain the mayhem for only so long before it grows tiresome, and fortunately this madcap movie quits while it's ahead. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Army of Darkness.......2007-05-18
This movie was great, very entertaining and funny. If you love Night of the Living Dead, this is even better.
Without Embeth Davidtz, this movie is garbage.......2007-04-12
The only thing reedeemable about this movie is the beautiful Embeth Davidtz, without her, the movie is pathetic. Honestly, this movie is one of the worst I ever witnessed. "The Mummy" doesn't even equal its patheticness, and that is saying something!!
WORST MOVIE EVER!.......2007-03-29
Apparently for some reason, everyone loves this movie. They say watch it with fun friends. I did. It was so bad. There is no plot, it goes from one thing to another with no explanation. Unless you don't know a good movie from a bad one, don't get this. The "comedy" in it is so repeatative. He fought the mini version for it seemed like 10 minutes and he fought the deadites in the well for another half hour. The phrase it's so bad it's good don't even apply. It passed that point on how bad it is. The action is horrible, and you shouldn't waste your money or your time on the "greatness" this movie supposedly has. Disgrace to movies and horrible spin off of an H.P. Lovecraft theme.
Great movie - bad transfer.......2007-02-28
I got this one mainly for the commentary track. The quality of the print was hit and miss. Yes, I know they added 15 minutes of footage from various sources, and that would account for some of the inconsistancy of the quality of the print, but there were other parts that are in the standard 82 min. version that just looked awful here. The Universal release isn't the long version, and there are no extras, but IMO the print was better. I understand the Boomstick edition looks even better, though I haven't seen it. Anchor Bay seems to have a history of using bad prints for their DVD releases, and this one would seem to fall into that category. I would recommend this for extreme fans only - just for the commentary, which is pretty good.
Excellent, legendary.......2007-02-15
A legendary film. A must for the horror movie lovers that can also laugh of the gender.

The off-Broadway comedy-horror-musical hit that ran for years makes a successful transfer to film with a bevy of big-name cameos and two perfectly cast leads. Rick Moranis is the nebbish Seymour, who pines for flower-girl Audrey (Ellen Greene) while living in the basement of florist Mr. Mushnik (Vincent Gardenia). Things start turning around for Seymour, though, after he buys a little plant during a solar eclipse, christens it Audrey II, and discovers that it likes to drink blood. Soon enough, though, Seymour finds out that Audrey II, now grown to epic proportions, is in actuality a "mean green mother from outer space" that is hell-bent on world domination. Based on the 1960 Roger Corman cheapie that featured a young Jack Nicholson, <I>Little Shop</I> boasts a hilarious, amazing score by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken, who would go on to revitalize Disney's animation arm with <I>The Little Mermaid</I> and <I>Beauty and the Beast</I>. Greene, the lone holdover from the original cast, is a ravishing, goofy Audrey, whose awkward demeanor belies a voice that could knock Ethel Merman off her feet. She's ably matched by Moranis, whose lack of a singing voice is perfectly in sync with Seymour's nerdiness. And Levi Stubbs Jr. of the Four Tops provides the lowdown, nasty-minded voice of Audrey II; his rendition of the Oscar-nominated "Mean Green Mother from Outer Space" is a showstopper. As for those celebrity cameos, Steve Martin's sadistic dentist is a masterful creation, as is Bill Murray's masochistic patient; John Candy, James Belushi, and Christopher Guest also pop up. And there was never a lovelier and funkier Greek chorus than the three Motown-fueled girls (Tichina Arnold, Michelle Weeks, and Tisha Campbell) who appear throughout the film. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>
Customer Reviews:
Like the movie...not the singing.......2007-05-18
This is a pretty good movie, except for all the singing....I know it's that type of movie, but I don't care for it. But I love the plot!
The second best musical of all times.......2007-05-15
I first saw this when I was about 12. I hated it at first because I wasn't mature enough to watch it with out having nightmares. Luckely after occasionaly watching it over a period of about two years I final was able to to watch the whole movie from beginiing to end without stopping except for bathroom breaks. If you saw the original black and white version of this made in the sixties and the off brodway play which ran four about four years in New York. I also thought I would inform you that the whole alternate first ending is not include on this dvd. The al;ternate nding was only avilable for about the first three days the dvd was avilable for sale on line and in stores when it first came out. Unfortunately Mr. Griffen had not given approval to have the alternate ending included on the dvd so only fragments of it remain on the second release of it. When young rick morransis discovers a mystery planet trouble some comes up. Can rick tame this blood thirst monster will he is forced to murder to feed it;s growing hunger. I also thought I'd inform you that two of the members of this cast are currently decased. John Candy died from a heart prtoblem I belive it was shorly after his role as Barf in spaceballs the famous spoof of the starwars triology that came out after this. In addition shortly before the dvd release vincent Garden also passed away. Can seymor control this monster of nature and what fate lies in store for the human race. Find out in thrilling action packed hillarious finally. This movie should be fine for kids 13 and up due to mild gory images mild rude humor mild violence in a couple of parts, intensity and occasional inapropriate language at the begining, middle and the end of the movie.
Funny with a great Soundtrack!.......2007-04-06
I'm not crazy about musicals, but if the music's right and the story's tight, then I can be sold. I fell in love with this movie when I first saw it and I still love it today. I also admire the original by Roger Corman. Who can resist a giant wise cracking plant that eats people and sings! Gotta love it.
Humorously Devious.......2007-03-23
I have nothing but respect for the puppeteers who controlled dear Audrey II. That plant ran the show, no doubt about it.
As musicals go this is one of the greatest, only second to Rocky Horror.
Rick Moranis is brilliant, and Ellen Greene has such an amazingly deep voice for such a tiny woman.
The three women singing throughout the movie gave me chills with every note. The vocal in this film are surprising and beautiful.
The story itself is brilliantly funny and horrific, it will have you laughing and cowering at the same time.
A true classic and worth watching...again, and again and again.
Great Service.......2007-03-22
I ordered the dvd and within the week it was already in my mail box, it was fine and we watch it all the time A+!

<I>Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth</I> is essential viewing for anyone old enough to appreciate its vital teachings. One of the greatest interviews ever recorded, this six-part, six-hour encounter between teacher- mythologist Campbell and student-journalist Bill Moyers (recorded in the two years preceding Campbell's death in 1988) covers a galaxy of topics related to Campbell's central themes: Mythology is humanity's universal method of seeking the transcendental, and "follow your bliss" is the timeless formula for spiritual satisfaction. Campbell himself is the embodiment of these themes, an erudite scholar and quintessential storyteller, recalling a wide spectrum of myths from throughout history (Japanese, Native American, Egyptian, Mayan, and many more) to illustrate humankind's eternal quest to grasp the mysteries of creation. Historical artifacts and illustrations bring these timeless stories to life.
An astute interviewer, Moyers is an acolyte in perfect harmony with Campbell-as- mentor, wording questions with penetrating perfection as their intellectual dance reaches exhilarating heights of meaning and fascination. Moyers also finds the perfect hook for a global audience, examining Campbell's admiration of George Lucas's <I>Star Wars</I> saga as a popular tapestry of ancient myths, and Lucas himself is interviewed in a DVD bonus segment ("I'm not creating a new myth," he says, "but telling old myths in a new way"). Campbell's seemingly endless well of knowledge reaches a simple conclusion: we need myths to survive like we need oxygen to breathe, as a life force with which to understand our existence--past, present, and future. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

So much in such a small package.......2007-06-14
This series condensed on man's life long study and thoughts into a few hours of interactive discussion. I did not know what to expect and was overwhelmed with the richness of what Joseph Campbell had to say. I recommend this to anyone who is interested in finding out more about what shapes us as humans.
Master Of Mythology Speaks.......2007-05-08
Truly inspiring! If you are a storyteller, or a lover of storytelling, or a crafter of stories, this video offers valuable insights in the dynamics of storytelling mythologies. Joseph Campbell, like life's "call to adventure" (for the hero soul), invites us into the human realm of mythology to inform us, to illuminate us, and to endear the hero within us all. Journey along with Bill Moyers as he probes the mysterious mythological meanings in our human stories. Moyers continuously asks the penetrating questions which ultimately reveal Mr. Campbell's profound knowledge our mythological archetypes. Moyers' genuine interest, student-like attitude, and friendly-conversational manner put the viewer directly in the interview. Truly enthralling!
a wonder.......2007-05-03
campbell is pretty much an unique entity among humans. its really difficult to mention his breadth and vision but what he has done is something near to immortal akin to the myths themselves. he has synthetized and with his insight revealed the kernel of truth that lay encrusted in myths around the world. his visions of myths is what galapagos island was to darwin. it was all there to see, if only we had paid attention! if joseph is ideal teacher bill is teacher's dream come true. bill's penetrating questioning and the deepest enquiries that stirs within us, once in a while makes feel true, alive and sublime, all you get to see within span of few hours. these conversations we will feel like revisiting time and again; its like the nectar of truth, once tasted we cannot shake off the sensation. please experience this, it will be like a moment of truth and divinity in our stupid little lives.
Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth.......2007-03-19
I saw this when it was first broadcast. It has not lost any of its power of the years!
A great way to start.......2007-03-15
If you're interested in learning about the teachings of Joseph Campbell, this is a great way to start. I started by taping the shows when they were on the local PBS station, then collected a "formal" (purchased) set of VHS tapes, and have even purchased the DVD set. I also own the audio version and have a copy of the book based on the series. I don't think you can go wrong with this collection.

For devoted fans and nonfans alike, <I>Spider-Man</I> offers nothing less--and nothing more--than what you'd expect from a superhero blockbuster. Having proven his comic-book savvy with the original <I>Darkman</I>, director Sam Raimi brings ample energy and enthusiasm to Spidey's origin story, nicely establishing high-school nebbish Peter Parker (Tobey Maguire) as a brainy outcast who reacts with appropriate euphoria--and well-tempered maturity--when a "super-spider" bite transforms him into the amazingly agile, web-shooting Spider-Man. That's all well and good, and so is Kirsten Dunst as Parker's girl-next-door sweetheart. Where <I>Spider-Man</I> falls short is in its hyperactive CGI action sequences, which play like a video game instead of the gravity-defying exploits of a flesh-and-blood superhero. Willem Dafoe is perfectly cast as Spidey's schizoid nemesis, the Green Goblin, and the movie's a lot of fun overall. It's no match for <I>Superman</I> and <I>Batman</I> in bringing a beloved character to the screen, but it places a respectable third. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Spiderman PG-13
Sam Raimi
This movie is about an ordinary boy named Peter Parker who is played by Toby Maguire gets the unexpected when a spider bite changes life. Later that day Peter's dad also gets the unexpected when he was testing a formula on him for the air force but something went wrong. When Peter finds out he has to defeat he green goblin learns what his uncle Ben said to Peter before he got shot with great power comes great responsibility. Peter also must protect M.J. who gets in a lot of trouble. Now Spider man must save New York City from the green goblin.
I think that this greatly written movie deserves a two thumbs up and I would rate this movie a 9/10.
This movie was really great but should not be seen by like really young kids because there was little to much violence for those kinds of kids.
spider manspider man.......2007-06-12
SPIDER-MAN
In the beginning of the movie Spider-man, a nerdy kid named Peter Parker got bit by a spider during a field trip to a museum / lab. The spider gave him special powers. He was able to climb walls, and squart webs. Then he started making costumes. After that he looked for cars to buy in the news paper. But, he needed to fine a way to get the money. He found a way it was wrestling the prize was $3000 if you can last 3minutes in the ring with Bone Saw. Spider-man (Peter Parker) won in 2minutes. There for he ended up getting $100. At the same time Peter was getting the money a robber came in and stole all the money. He killed Uncle Ben for the car. Spider-man follwed him to a building the robber backed up fell out of a window and ended dieing. Peter made a new costume, and later in the movie he met the green goblin. When Aunt May, Mary Jane, a Peter Parker, Harry, and his father Norman Osborn were eating a big dinner, the green goblin found out Spider-Man was Peter Parker. IN the end when the green goblin died Peter Parker saw that he was Norman Osborn.
I thought that this was a very good movie especially the ending. I recommend this to every one in the world. I guarantee you'll like it.

Great service.......2007-06-09
What is left to say? Amazon's service is great - and the movie was delivered as though I just picked it up from the manufacturer.
Spiderman was not a movie typical of my normal purchases, but I'm glad I bought it. It has a great story line and has something for everyone - even women like the movie. The movie industry has worked hard to make their movies more appealing to a wider audience, and they hit a home run with this one.
Superheros and Comic Gods - Our Modern Mythos.......2007-06-05
A lovely, good-looking and fine-spirited adventure of a boy and his commitments to self, as he passes into adult spider-hood. Spiderman is a modern myth, our hero is the anonymous Perseus, the successful Icarus, masked for humility, or vanity's sake.
The familial threads are touching, and Cliff Robertson's `Uncle Ben' might get you welling at the eyes. The story is well-fleshed and animated, and sometimes, too plucky.
Sam Raimi is so versed in light-comic storytelling that he doesn't miss an opportunity to goose the material good-naturedly. Perhaps a silent moment or two would have added a touch of grandeur.
But he gets so much right, and it's joyous, and so much fun you forgive it it's occasional silliness.
Superheroes in ancient and modern myth are often overgrown boys propelled by a loss of family.. they seek their father's approval and to re-attach with their lost mothers..
Superman, orphaned in space, is nothing without earth, and his adopted earth-mother is Metropolis... Batman was orphaned in Gotham City, the place he returns to enact constant, remorseful vengeance, seeking catharsis for his anger.
And Peter Parker, parentless, but raised by loving relatives, takes flight in the only American city with a downtown long and tall enough to support his peculiar gifts; New York, which he protects, even as it torments him. It supplies both an endless series of potential casualties for him to save and quiet hiding places far above the noise of the world.
Whatever flaws you can find in costuming, line-reading, etc, you'll be enchanted by the freedom and power of his impossible movement...the inspiring beauty of his muscular near-flight, held aloft on sticky organic threads spewed and strewn among the arches and shoulders of his mothering, antagonistic, tormenting, beloved and inextricable city.
Great movie , sound and image.......2007-05-29
It worths it to own it as one the the Sci-fi modern Classics, wonderful F/X, sound and photo, very entertaining movie, great actors

Bill Murray at his wry, wisecracking best in this riotous romantic comedy about a weatherman caught in a personal time warp on the worst day of his life.

After a surprise blizzard traps him in small-town hell, things get even worse; Phil wakes the next morning to find it's Groundhog Day all over again... and again... and again.

Bill Murray does warmth in his most consistently effective post-<I>Stripes</I> comedy, a romantic fantasy about a wacky weatherman forced to relive one strange day over and over again, until he gets it right. Snowed in during a road-trip expedition to watch the famous groundhog encounter his shadow, Murray falls into a time warp that is never explained but pays off so richly that it doesn't need to be. The elaborate loop-the-loop plot structure cooked up by screenwriter Danny Rubin is crystal-clear every step of the way, but it's Murray's world-class reactive timing that makes the jokes explode, and we end up looking forward to each new variation. He squeezes all the available juice out of every scene. Without forcing the issue, he makes us understand why this fly-away personality responds so intensely to the radiant sanity of the TV producer played by Andie MacDowell. The blissfully clueless Chris Elliott (<I>Cabin Boy</I>) is Murray's nudnik cameraman. <I>--David Chute</I>

I watch this movie every Groundhog Day with my wife. Goundhog Day just happens to be her birthday and she loves this movie! A smart funny romantic comedy with Murry at his comedic best. The DVD is a good transfer and should be in everyones collection.
FUNNY.......2007-03-14
One of the funniest movies I have ever seen! Also, one of the best movies I have ever seen. Great Movie. No flaws.
Hilarious!!.......2007-03-13
This is one of the funniest movies you're going to see...but it's also got some thoughtful messages about life. Some of the funniest scenes are when Murray's character realizes he not only can't get out of Groundhog's Day, but there are no consequences to his actions, because he keeps waking up to the same day. What follows is a hilarious string of self-destructive situations...just how many ways CAN a person try to kill themselves?! My personal favorite scene is in the diner, where Murray gorges on every artery clogging breakfast treat, while smoking a cigarette...gluttony at it's best! As the movie moves along and he tires of his self-descructive attitude, Murray's character starts to explore the possibilities of having unlimited time to do all the things a person would ever want to do and how much more meaningful it is to be kind instead of cruel. Interesting twist...while being lots of fun.

Boy, the way the Beaver played. Ricky Nelson made the hit parade. Voices they were seldom raised. Those were the days. And then, on January 12, 1971, America met the Bunkers, and sitcoms would never be the same. The Bunkers were TV's first dysfunctional family: blue-collar bigot Archie (the late Carroll O'Connor in his iconic role), his long-suffering but loving wife Edith (Jean Stapleton), "little goil" Gloria (Sally Struthers), and her liberal husband "Meathead" Mike (Rob Reiner). Series creator Norman Lear broke near every rule and taboo in adapting the British series "Till Death Do Us Part" for American television. The series pilot, "Meet the Bunkers," was a bracing shocker that dared to find humor in prejudice. Archie dispenses racial epithets and ethnic slurs. Mike and Gloria clearly have an active sex life, while Edith, in the pilot at any rate, is more "pip" than "dingbat." In its first season, the series refused to, in Archie's words, "stifle" itself, tackling such hot-button topics as homophobia ("Judging Books by Covers"), racism ("Lionel Moves into the Neighborhood"), feminism ("Gloria Discovers Women's Lib"), and the generation gap (the touching "Success Story," with William Windom as Archie's former army buddy, a successful man who is revealed to be estranged from his son). <I>All in the Family</I> was a rich human comedy. Brought to life by a peerless ensemble, these characters would come to feel like family. Their foibles produced some of television's biggest laughs. They could also make us cry, as with the heartbreaking "Gloria's Pregnancy." Another series landmark is the season finale, "The First and Last Supper," in which we meet Isabel Sanford's Louise Jefferson (but, hilariously, not her husband, George). <I>All in the Family</I> was an instant lightning rod for controversy but went on to earn the comedy Emmy Award in its first year. This three-disc set has no extras (future sets will hopefully contain commentary by Lear or surviving cast members), but each episode is presented complete and uncut, restoring the funny, sometimes touching codas that were cut for syndication. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>
Description
From one of television's pioneering creators, Norman Lear comes one of the most beloved families in television history, the Bunkers, starring Carroll O'Connor as Archie, Jean Stapleton as Edith, Rob Reiner as Mike "Meathead" Stivic and Sally Struthers as Gloria. Television was changed forever the night of January 12, 1971, when the premiere episode of "All in the Family" debuted. This three disc set contains the first complete season. The show's central character, Archie Bunker, is a working-class family man who holds bigoted, conservative views of the world. His viewpoints clash with nearly everyone he comes into contact with, especially his liberal son-in-law Mike Stivic (or, as Archie delights in calling him, "Meathead"). The two disagree about nearly everything: politics, minorities, sex, religion, economics, war, gun control, crime, free speech, women's rights, morality, philosophy and (so it seems) life in general. Archie's daughter, Gloria, often (but not always) sides with Mike, while his saintly wife, Edith, is the rock that holds the family together. Edith is as friendly, reserved, considerate and open-minded as Archie is bigoted, loud, rude and closed-minded; however, the love and faithfulness between them is undeniable. During the course of its remarkable eight-year run, All in the Family was nominated for an amazing 48 Emmy Awards, taking home 20 trophies with multiple wins for all of the lead characters as well as three wins for Outstanding Comedy Series. Numerous spin-off series resulted from All in the Family including the very successful "Maude" and "The Jeffersons."

I love All in the Family is Great!!!.......2007-04-10
I really like All an the Family is fun see old Sit-Com's again and again
Still funny after all these years.......2007-02-12
I enjoyed every episode spread over these three discs. The only feature I wish it had was a "play all" feature. Season one has 13 episodes:
Disc 1:
1. Meet the Bunkers-In this pilot episode, it's Archie & Edith's 22nd wedding anniversary and Gloria & Michael have planned a surprise brunch to celebrate. But a heated discussion that leads to the question of whether or not Archie is predjudiced alters the party atmosphere.
2. Writing the President-Archie leanrs that Mike has written a letter to the president critizing what is wrong with America, so Archie decides to write one telling the president what is right with America.
3.Oh, My Aching Back-When Archie is rear-ended by a Jewish woman he decides to sue and demands to be represented by a Jewish firm.
4. Judging Books by Covers-Archie thinks Mike's friend is gay, however it's Archie's friend Steve, who sets the record "straight".
Disc 2:
5. Archie Gives Blood- Archie tries to chicken out of giving blood saying he is worried about who the recipient will be.
6. Gloria's pregnancy-A very touching episode. Gloria discovers she is pregnant. Mike decides to quit college and get an apt. to support Gloria and the baby.
7. Mike's hippie friends come to visit-Mike invites his unmarried hippie friends to spend the night and Archie objects.
8. Lionel moves into the neighborhood-Archie's is not prepared for the first black family to move into the neighborhood. He attempts to have Lionel persuade the new family to sell their house, but there's one problem:it's Lionel's family who bought the house.
Disc 3:
9. Edith Has Jury Duty-Edith is chosen for jury duty for an improtant murder case & is sequestered away from her family, which doesn't make Archie too happy and when Edith lone dissenting vote causes the deliberations to run longer, there is no telling when she'll be coming home.
10. Archie Is Worried about His Job-Archie can't sleep from worrying when he learns his company is cutting their personnel by 20%.
11. Gloria Discovers Women's Lib-Gloira reads some books about women's lib and tries to convince her family that both sexes are equal, but Mike isn't buying it.
12. Success Story-One of Archie's old army buddies, who is now a wealthy man, reveals to Mike that although he make look like a million bucks on the outside, inside he is bankrupt.
13. The First and Last Supper-Edith accepts a dinner invitation from Louise Jefferson, but Archie refuses to go. But when Lionel puts Archie ont he spot, they bring the meal over to the Bunkers.
All three discs play fine and the quality is good. No special features but does have english and spanish subtitles. Still a very funny show.
progress.......2007-02-07
This is one of the first TV shows that was progressive enough to include subjects that weren't talked @ too much, but should have been. It was almost too real, when meathead and Archie started having an argument @ certain subjects, it made you want to step in to cool the two of them down. It felt like they were in your home having the conversation. It was still so funny though.
Excellent, funny, not dated.......2007-01-06
Every episode is extremely funny and socially enlightening without being in the least dated. The cast is superb and the DVDs are of excellent quality. It is still a hit!
All In The Family.......2006-12-02
Perhaps they got away with it because the cast was so pitch-perfect, balancing against each other so well with their various personalities and quirks. Certainly this show came along at the right time -- and got away with things you don't even see on television TODAY!
A quick history, for those who are unaware: After TV's debut in the late 40's, sitcoms became a television "norm," with families such as those portrayed in *Leave It to Beaver* or *That Girl* bringing a polite, very false gentility into American homes. Those shows weren't seen as false depictions at the time, and many are still appreciated today.
On January 12, 1971, this show debuted, and it is the single show responsible for almost everything you see on TV today. *All in the Family* was very, very different.
My father has explained to me, on one occasion, what a resounding shock this show was to the public. Suddenly TV shows weren't showing the nice, genteel side anymore. This show shattered the mold, with episodes about menopause, sexism, racism, homosexuality, politics, pregnancy, miscarriage, you-name-it. Some of the words uttered on this show likely can't even be reprinted *in this Amazon review* without portions of my review being censored. Perhaps incredibly, however, audiences jumped right in and were able to handle it: The show was apparently #1 in the ratings for five years straight, with people laughing their heads off at the goings-on in the Bunker household.
A true piece of history. As Alex McNeil says in his compendium *Total Television*, this show is probably the single most influential in television history. The world has never looked back, and I certainly hope these are selling well. I plan to buy every season released.

The more things change, the more they stay the same? When it comes to <I>All in the Family</I>, the answer is an unqualified yes
and no. Considering the show's tremendous popularity (this sixth season, spanning 1975 and '76, was the fifth straight year it held down the top spot in the Nielsen ratings), creator-producer Norman Lear was unlikely to make any drastic adjustments to the basic formula. And sure enough, in these 24 episodes (on three discs, <I>sans</I> bonus features), the four main characters--Archie Bunker (Carroll O'Connor, brilliant as ever), ditzy wife Edith (Jean Stapleton), daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers), and contentious son-in-law Mike Stivic (Rob Reiner)--and their relationships remain the obvious focal point. What's more, while it's true that various new developments, including Mike and Gloria's move next door (to the house once occupied by the Jeffersons), her pregnancy, and the birth of little Joey, are more than cosmetic and account for the lion's share of the storylines, <I>All in the Family</I>'s basic dynamic remains one of the strongest and most instantly recognizable in TV sitcom history. Ditto the writers' penchant for the trenchant; social issues include tolerance and homophobia (Archie saves a woman's life with "mouth-to-mouth restitution," only to discover that "she" is a transvestite), women's rights (Gloria gets fired for being pregnant), vigilantism (Archie fends off a mugger with illegal tear gas), religion (Archie wants his grandson baptized and raised as a Christian, but Mike has other ideas), and so on. And now more than ever, some of the language will seem a little shocking, as Archie regularly uses a variant of the gay slur that got <I>Grey's Anatomy</I> cast member Isaiah Washington in very hot water more than three decades later.
Some changes, however, are a little more profound. The kinder, gentler Archie who began to appear a few seasons back is more in effect now; an extended and largely improvised scene in which he coddles his infant grandson is surprisingly tender, and when he hugs Mike after Joey is born, longtime viewers might wonder if what on earth has happened to TV's most unrepentant, close-minded bigot. But hey, even cavemen evolved, and the Archie Bunker we see in Season 6 bears an increasing resemblance to a character he most surely inspired, one who usually ends up removing his foot from his mouth long enough to do the right thing: Homer Simpson. <I>--Sam Graham</I>
Product Description
All in the Family centers on a working class family man whose conservative views of the world clash with nearly everyone he meets. The cast of supporting characters includes Archie's long-suffering but loving wife Edith (Jean Stapleton); daughter Gloria (Sally Struthers), and liberal son-in-law Mike "Meathead" Stivic (Rob Reiner). In the sixth season, Mike and Gloria finally move into their own home and discover Gloria is pregnant. After the baby is born, Archie has the baby baptized without their permission. While driving a cab, Archie rescues a woman who turns out to be a transvestite, and Edith starts volunteering at an old age home. Guest stars this season include Billy Crystal, Doris Roberts (TV's "Everybody Loves Raymond"), Robert Guillaume (TV's "Benson"), Bernadette Peters and Betty Garrett, who won a Golden Globe® for her role.
Customer Reviews:
Why so long?.......2007-05-11
Why is it taking so long to release this series? Not only that but why would they release Season 1 of "Archie Bunker's Place" before the rest of the "All In The Family" series is released? "Archie Bunker's Place" is more or less a continuation of "All in the Family". I don't get it. I remember when the first Twilight Zone DVDs started coming out. They released the first 12, then all of a sudden they stopped production. It took something like five or six years before they resuemed production. After buying them though, I found the reason: The first 12 DVDs were released by Panansonic and apparently they lost the release rights until another company, "IMAGE" bought the rights and started production. Who knows, maybe Michael Jackson bought up the rights to "All in the Family" the way he did the Beatle's master tapes, in which case, we'll never see them released.
UNFORGETTABLE.......2007-05-07
How I miss this program on TV ! "All In the Family" truly was one of the all-time best TV-series. I am so glad I can watch the shows now on DVD. Unforgettable !

All in the Family Season 6.......2007-04-06
I dont write reviews anymore because when I wrote one that the seller didnt like he became very threatening and literally forced me to take it off. Too many weirdos in this country to have freedom of speech anymore. You should screen your outside sellers with a backround check. Seriously.
Love this season!.......2007-03-26
This is one of my favorite seasons of this great show. Although some may disagree, I enoy seeing the softer side of Archie and it starts showing through on this season, as Archie and Edith become grandparents. However, even with Archie's softer side starting to peek through this season, the show is just as funny as ever. Mike & Gloria move next door and Joey is born, which creates even more conflicts between Mike & Archie. Can't wait for the next season to be released. I plan on adding every season to my classic tv dvd collection.

More than a few critics hailed Spider-Man 2 as "the best superhero movie ever," and there's no compelling reason to argue--thanks to a bigger budget, better special effects, and a dynamic, character-driven plot, it's a notch above Spider-Man in terms of emotional depth and rich comic-book sensibility. Ordinary People Oscar-winner Alvin Sargent received screenplay credit, and celebrated author and comic-book expert Michael Chabon worked on the story, but it's director Sam Raimi's affinity for the material that brings Spidey 2 to vivid life. When a fusion experiment goes terribly wrong, a brilliant physicist (Alfred Molina) is turned into Spidey's newest nemesis, the deranged, mechanically tentacled "Doctor Octopus," obsessed with completing his experiment and killing Spider-Man (Tobey Maguire) in the process. Even more compelling is Peter Parker's urgent dilemma: continue his burdensome, lonely life of crime-fighting as Spider-Man, or pursue love and happiness with Mary Jane Watson (Kirsten Dunst)? Molina's outstanding as a tragic villain controlled by his own invention, and the action sequences are nothing less than breathtaking, but the real success of Spider-Man 2 is its sense of priorities. With all of Hollywood's biggest and best toys at his disposal, Raimi and his writers stay true to the Marvel mythology, honoring Spider-Man creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko, and setting the bar impressively high for the challenge of Spider-Man 3. --Jeff Shannon

DVD Features:</br></b>
The first commentary track is by director Sam Raimi and a self-deprecating Tobey Maguire speaking in tandem, and producer (and Marvel CEO) Avi Arad and coproducer Grant Curtis speaking in tandem. They discuss a number of topics, including Raimi's memory of his excitement over Richard Donner's Superman and how the character of Black Cat had to be dropped from the film. The second commentary is by six members of the Oscar-nominated effects team, and one of their primary focuses is how Doc Ock's arms were achieved by a combination of puppetry and CGI. </p>
The centerpiece of the second disc is a massive two-hour documentary that can be viewed all at once or in 12 separate pieces. It covers the development of the story, the visual effects, costumes, stunts, and sound and music. Three shorter featurettes cover Peter Parker's struggle between his personal and hero lives, Doc Ock, and the women in Spider-Man's life, and what's interesting is how they discuss those topics not just in relation to the movies but to the comic books as well. (For example, Betty Brant and Gwen Stacy had a much greater impact in the comics.) There's a scene in which you can toggle among three different camera angles, and a gallery of 17 paintings Alex Ross created for the opening sequence. The sound and picture are spectacular, though only the Superbit edition has DTS. --David Horiuchi </p>

Spiderman 3.......2007-06-15
Spiderman 3 is an incredible movie with outstanding effects. The effets are a compliment to the amazing graphics!! Starring Toby Maguire as Peter Parker/Spiderman, and James Franco as the new Goblin/Harry Osborn. Which side will Harry and spidey be on joining. Will they reunite or rebel?
Was flint marko the true killer of uncle ben parker?who is the sandman? Many questions only to be answered if you see this movie yourself!!
This movie is unbelievable!! It is the best spiderman yet, I cant wait forthe 4th movie.Like i said the affects arent even comparible to the other spidermans. This is my favorite movie ever! Spiderman 3 waswas released may 4th with a rating of pg-13. It got this rating because of intense action violence. The movie lasted about two hours long.
I would probably reccomend this movie to anyone who likes the other spidermen. If you havent seen them, then if you like action you would love it!
Ok.......2007-06-12
I bought the special edition as well. The new scenes are cool. I wish they came out with this first.
top of the line.......2007-06-08
the tape came in very good condition and well packaged tha
Liked it better when it was called Superman 2.......2007-06-08
There are so many people who laud this as the best comic book movie ever. I call shenanigans on that. Lifting the excellent plot device of Superman 2, Petter Parker decides to surrender being Spider-Man in order to find love and a life. Unlike the decision made by Superman, where he is forced to change who he is in order to embrace a normal life and find true love, Peter Parker selfishly gives up being Spider-Man to continue being who he was to begin with, a dork with school, girls, and work on his mind. The opening of the movie leading up to the central part of the story work quite well and I applaud the writing. Dr. Octopus' origin and goals, Harry Osbourne's continuing disdain for Spider-Man, and Peter Parker's angst all come across realistically and draw the audience in. Then they start to throw in the cliches and lame plot devices, a clear foreshadowing to what was to cripple the third installment: Peter's subconscious ridding him of his powers because deep down he doesn't want to be Spider-Man, the kid asking Peter where Spider-Man disappeared to giving ol' Parker second thoughts on surrendering the persona, etc. This is New York City. The belief that Spidey's removal would prove dire not only insults the true heroes of the city (firemen, police, etc.) it also stretches the realms of believability. With Superman, the world truly suffered when he surrendered who he was to become someone else. With Peter, it never really makes sense as to why he would want to be Spidey again, especially since his life improved once he surrendered the persona. The death of Doc Oc at the end was unnecessary as was Harry's pause when he could have killed Pete and finally gain vengeance for the death of his father.
Overall this was a fun movie. The best comic book movie, not quite. There is great writing and a good arc, but deep down it just rings hollow as to why Pete would want to remain Spidey.
Not as good as the first........2007-06-03
I wish that they would/could carry the movie on one villain and not a montage. I think that if they would move like in the comic they might have a better product on the back end and not just to cash in. Set teasers. Should someone peaking from around the corner or view a monitor and making cryptic comments. Where is Carlton Fisk. Where is the Shocker, Vulture. There are many villains that Spiderman fought that weren't super famous but they could have been with some corrective/creative brainstorming in the movies. The CGI was good and appropriate where it was applied. So it's good for the entertainment value but not as a blockbuster.

In the fall of 1979, Sam Raimi and his merry band headed into the woods of rural Tennessee to make a movie. They emerged with a roller coaster of a film packed with shocks, gore, and wild humor, a film that remains a benchmark for the genre. Ash (cult favorite Bruce Campbell) and four friends arrive at a backwoods cabin for a vacation, where they find a tape recorder containing incantations from an ancient book of the dead. When they play the tape, evil forces are unleashed, and one by one the friends are possessed. Wouldn't you know it, the only way to kill a "deadite" is by total bodily dismemberment, and soon the blood starts to fly. Raimi injects tremendous energy into this simple plot, using the claustrophobic set, disorienting camera angles, and even the graininess of the film stock itself to create an atmosphere of dread, punctuated by a relentless series of jump-out-of-your-seat shocks. <I>The Evil Dead</I> lacks the more highly developed sense of the absurd that distinguish later entries in the series--<I>Evil Dead 2</I> and <I>Army of Darkness</I>--but it is still much more than a gore movie. It marks the appearance of one of the most original and visually exciting directors of his generation, and it stands as a monument to the triumph of imagination over budget. --Simon Leake

An Awesome Movie That Became An Icon of Horror.......2007-05-03
It may not look like much by today's standards, but for the budget that was used making this movie, it really comes off great. This film is different from the two sequels in a couple of ways, one being that Ash is more of the cowardly co-star and second being that this is strictly horror. Not that it is really scary, but it's intention are in that genre with no real laughs intended. Everytime I watch the movie, I am amazed with how much was able to get done with such a low amount of money to spend and how well the movie comes off. It is just as good as any major film of the same year, you can't really tell the difference between a big budget horror movie and the Evil Dead when it comes to quality.
It is easy to tell that there was talent that was working in front of and behind the camera. Not just Bruce (who would be the only star with any future success in film), but everyone else was equally impressive. The way the entire movie was written, set up and shot is nothing short of amazing for a young director and writer (Sam Raimi). Overall, if you have seen any of the other movies in the series or never have, this movie is a big recommendation. Just know that this is different from the other movies, as I said, Ash isn't the heroic icon he is known for now with the quick one liners. He is more of a side kick who accidentally has to survive his friends turning evil.
EVIL DEAD THE FIRST OF THREE.......2007-04-11
THIS FIRST EPISODE OF THE EVIL TRILOGY IS DEFINITELY THE BEST. IT IS SCARY AND FUNNY. BRUCE CAMPBELL IS GREAT. EVIL DEAD 2 AND ARMY OF DARKNESS WERE ALSO GREAT MOVIES. I RECOMMEND THIS TO ANYONE WHO LIKES SCARY MOVIES.
evil dead .......2007-04-11
the evil dead movie is hit on my part, in my books the movie is second place so far, in 1st the therd movie army of darkness is in first. But i have not seen the second movie.I loved the movie and injoyed it a lot, will they ever die!?!?!?!
Very good scary movie.......2007-01-23
I really love this movie. It is one of my favorite scary movies of all time.
Why are you torturing me like this? Why? .......2006-12-25
It's the early 80's, what do you expect? This is a scary scary film. And I think I know why films now a days can't hold a candle to films like Halloween and Evil Dead. And that is because a photo copy is never as good as the original. That is the bottom line. Directors don't care about a lot of the material that they are filming today, especially when it comes to horror films and that is because they don't write their own stories. They do someone elses work. But not Evil Dead. This was Raimi's baby from the outset. When films like the two mentioned were filmed they were filmed by two directors that were complete unknowns. They had no pressure to make a great film and they did it on an incredibly low budget. Halloween was made for $150,000 and Evil Dead for $50 000. So what that meant is that the directors could stick to their visions but they had to find innovative ways to do so. Their budgets didn't allow a heap of special effects so they had to rely on what they knew. And that was, how to create atmosphere using the camera. And Evil Dead is one of the best at doing that. There is one scene in this film that I will never forget and that is one of the early scenes where the cast arrives at the cabin. Here we see a long shot of the cabin and it has very eerie music playing. This shows the cabin as being menacing. It lets you know that there is evil in that cabin. And that we are in for a hell of a ride.
Sam Raimi made a masterpiece here that I believe stands the test of time. You can put this film up against any of today's so called horror films and I guarantee you this scares you more. Raimi cares about his movie and he does everything to make you feel the terror that the cabin people feel. We are scared and disgusted at what happens when one of the women goes outside alone at night and meets a tree that does unspeakable things. And when the book is first introduced.... that is horror movie history there. What a brilliant concept. A book that is evil. I have often wondered about such books. We hear about them all the time in movies about ancient Egypt and ancient times. But here we have a book that has weird incantations from another world and another language, and you just know that as soon as some idiot utters the words that they are not supposed to say, well they won't be around much longer.
The Evil Dead is a miracle. It was made on a rock bottom budget yet it is scarier than any Hollywood movie that is made for 20 million could ever hope to be. If you want to truly experience a frightening experience, rent this film, it knows what it wants to say. And it knows how to make you afraid. So be afraid. Be very afraid. You may never look at the forest the same again.
