Franklin J. Schaffner (<I>Patton</I>) directs this true story of Henri Charriere (better known as "Papillon" or "the butterfly"), a prisoner so determined to escape the notorious Devil's Island, he attempted it multiple times until he reached old age. Steve McQueen plays Charriere, and Dustin Hoffman is very good as the hero's anxious, defenseless friend. Based on Charriere's own memoir and uncompromisingly adapted by screenwriters Dalton Trumbo (<I>Johnny Got His Gun</I>) and Lorenzo Semple Jr. (<I>Three Days of the Condor</I>), the film is tough going (it is set, after all, on Devil's Island) but not gratuitously violent. There are sequences that stay with one for a long time, such as Papillon's brief stay at a leper colony and the long periods of starvation and solitary confinement he endures after each attempted flight. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Description

They called him Papillon, meaning "butterfly." If only he had wings to go with the name. Unable to fly, Henri Charriere virtually willed himself free. He persisted until he did the impossible: escape Devil's Island. Based on Charriere's bestseller and shot in Spain and Jamaica, Franklin J. Schaffner's film of Papillon united two stars at key career junctures. After a decade of fine work in The Great Escape, The Sand Pebbles and Bullitt, Steve McQueen found in Charriere another ideal tough-guy role. Coming off The Graduate, Midnight Cowboy and Little Big Man, Dustin Hoffman again distinguished himself as Dega, Charriere's scruffy friend. <P><b>DVD Features:</b><b>Other:</b>Vintage Featurette: The Magnificent Rebel<b>Theatrical Trailer:</b></p>

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-06-19

It came fast and exactlly the way it was ordered.

5 out of 5 stars Superb.......2007-05-25

This is one of the best films that I have ever had the pleasure of enjoying. Steve McQueen is unparalleled. Dustin Hoffman gives one of his most professional performances as an actor par excellence. I highly recommend this film. It is a film for eternity.

3 out of 5 stars A good film, but..........2007-04-15

This is a good film. It is excellently shot, consistently well acted, interesting, and all in all good solid entertainment, and it is based on fact so there is that added worthy "eduatainment" feeling. In fact, if this film was based on an original script it would probably be the best prison film of all time. The thing is though, that it isn't. It is based on "Papillon" by Henri Charriere, and the book is so much better than the film that the film pales into total insignificance when compared to it. Its not that the film is bad, it is just that the book delivers 5000% more than the film could ever hope to, in scope, drama, plot, excitement, intrigue, breadth and ... pure distilled human spirit.

The book is a masterpiece, easy to read, and functionally perfect. The film is a pale imitation, and an entertainment. See the film if you want, but if you like the film, take my advice and read the book because the book will blow you away and live with you in a wonderful place in your heart and mind for the rest of your life. If you hate the film, give the book a shot as well, since I believe that "Papillon" is truly universal and easily, far and away, one of the best books ever written.

5 out of 5 stars Best Prison Escape Movie Ever!.......2007-04-11

Everyone has a favorite movie for their own reasons. This well shot, intense flick is my favorite for it's grit, pain, passion, suspence and excellent acting. You could put your-self in Papillon's shoes; it's that close to each of are own realities. This is a must have and you'll want to share it with your friends. Excellent movie!

5 out of 5 stars Epic Filmmaking.......2007-03-09

On top of the fact that it has been solidified that Steve McQueen is the "king of cool and action" of the 1970's and 1960's. It's always best not to forget his more challenging films with so much character development and intimacy like Papillon is. I only wish this DVD had more extras and got a better special edition treatment than it did, but we all can't be winners. Nearly all of McQueen's films got that treatment in the past year or so, including my favorite Bullitt. Dustin Hoffman's early career proves to be impossible to top with The Graduate, Straw Dogs and this as well. I simply can't stress enough how great this movie is, upon first view many years ago, I couldnt take my eyes off the screen. That sentiment is still very much the same as I have the ability to watch this film now over and over and it still hits me the exact same way.

The human beings are almost as interesting as the title character in this surprisingly subtle and engaging film about the cross-country adventures of a smart-mouthed parrot. As director John Roberts deploys the footage, the bird becomes a vivid personality; every quizzical twist of his head is oddly expressive. The people who interact with Paulie are a quirky and interesting bunch as well, and the casting is topnotch: Tony Shalhoub (<I>The Siege</I>) as a Russian immigrant janitor, Cheech Marin as an open-hearted mariachi musician, and Gena Rowlands as a widowed painter in a footloose Winnebago--all are vividly eccentric individuals, memorable in their own right. There are some tired swipes at the cold-blooded meanies of Big Science (beady-eyed researcher Bruce Davison has Paulie clapped in irons), but for the most part the film respects the complexity of everyone's motivations, and that's virtually unheard of in today's Hollywood, even in films supposedly designed for grownups. <I>--David Chute</I>

5 out of 5 stars Pauli.......2007-05-18

This is just a delightful and inspring family movie. The actors all support the plot. The lessons are well illustrated. The concern for animals is strong without being dogmatic. Just a great 2 hours of enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars A movie I could send to my granddaughter!.......2007-05-17

Funny, intelligent, warm and touching - and a movie that wouldn't embarrass me if I were watching it with my 12 year old granddaughter. I'm mailing it to her immediately (she lives out-of-town). I really enjoyed this movie and I would recommend it to anyone, any age. It has something for everyone in it.

I wish Hollywood would come out with more movies like this one. The actors are great and natural. The birds and animals in this movie are amazing.

5 out of 5 stars A great family movie!.......2007-05-14

"Paulie" is a sweet movie and perfert for a family video night! The parrot tells such a wonderful story of love, loss, trust - and the breaking thereof - that there are many 'moral of the story' moments! Gena Rowlands is wonderful in showing that no matter the age, or circumstance, we all have adventure within us! It may be hidden under fear and friends (in this case, Paulie) can help us 'stretch our wings'. The man who stars in this, currently seen on the t.v. show "Monk", did a wonderful job in his intent listening and resolve to help this bird - his friend. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who wants to spend an evening just 'kicking back' and enjoying a good story.

5 out of 5 stars Paulie.......2007-04-23

I am a parrot owner, and loved the movie. Even non-bird fanatics will enjoy this family movie. It's captivating, touching, and children and adults can equally relate to having learning difficulties while growing up, having a pet as your best friend, to losing loved ones and romantic relationships that didn't happen as we had hoped. Throughout all of Paulie's adventures with the different characters in the movie, you're always rooting for Paulie and that he'll find his "Marie", and the ending leaves you with a "feel good" feeling. I highly recommend this to anyone, and especially bird lovers. It made me look at my parrot(whose been with me for 28 years) with a renewed sense of wonder and respect for her intelligence and wondering what's she's thinking even though she doesn't talk like Paulie!

<I>Holly Hobbie & Friends - Surprise Party</I> is an hour-long animated feature starring Holly Hobbie's great-granddaughter, Holly, who is a modern woman in the making. Dressing in jeans, and sporting long, permed hair and a cool bike, Holly is a far cry from her homely relative who has long been adored for her country-style calico dresses and her ability to bake great cakes. In this episode, Holly is invited to her Aunt's birthday party, so she wants to learn how to make a cake. She takes baking lessons, in between nightly excursions during which she cuts fake crop circles in the neighbor's corn patch to trick her little brother into believing in aliens. Pranks continue until a guilt-ridden Holly confesses her dishonesty to Robbie, her brother, and her mother. As Holly seeks familial harmony and a sense of domesticity, she finds a treasure chest containing her great-grandma's memorabilia. Holly's rebellious feelings melt away as she discovers that her elder Holly also loved to party. In the end, the cake she makes is awesome and Holly is proud of both her heritage and of herself. <I>Surprise Party</I> seems made for little girls whose use of technology sets them apart from previous generations, but ladies who grew up with the original Holly Hobbie will prefer her humble pioneer look as a reminder of how much times have changed. Nevertheless, this lighthearted story will entertain kids everywhere. <I>—Trinie Dalton</I>

4 out of 5 stars My daughter's favorite new DVD.......2007-01-25

We saw the Holly Hobbie Christmas special on Nick Jr. in December and my four-year-old enjoyed it so much that I bought her this DVD. She absolutely loves it and wants to watch it every day. The story is rather simple - Holly wants to throw a surprise party for her Aunt Jessie. But there's a cute part that explains that this Holly is the great-granddaughter of the original Holly Hobbie that I remember from my childhood. There's humor and some good songs...overall a very enjoyable movie, especially for girls in the 4-8 age range.

5 out of 5 stars Holly Hobbie DVD .......2007-01-15

My grandaughter really liked this dvd. She watches it over and over and has even learned all the songs.

5 out of 5 stars Even my son loves it!.......2006-12-09

My 4 year old son has been watching this movie over and over again since last March. It's cute, it teaches them about respecting their friends and others. It's got a kind of cute, a little annoying song but nothing too annoying for the parents. Great little movie.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Movie!.......2006-11-04

My almost 5 year old twin daughters love this movie....and the surprise was that I actually liked it too. The characters are entertaining and likeable. The story-line is well put together with a lot of life lessons interwoven. Values such as respect, honesty, loyalty, tolerance and friendship are taught yet don't come off as being preachy. I just wish the producers would put out more Holly Hobbie movies.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing movie-Holly is wonderful!.......2006-06-11

This adorable little movie combines modern H.H.while remembering the classic H.H.I find it interesting that the modern Holly and her brother are named for the Holly and Robbie of earlier generations. There is nothing you won't like about this movie if you are a Holly Hobbie fan.It has so much to keep the attention no matter what age you are.
I rate this 5 star for everything from characters,to theme, and music.
I hope they continue to make more movies in this series.
Holly classic or modern is a charming refreshing delight to all that watches!

4 out of 5 stars A Disney 'Almost' Classic.......2005-02-13

When a cuddly baby raccoon snuggles his way into the life of a lonely boy named Sterling North (Billy Mumy), things go riotously awry as the ringtail's mischievous nature gets more and more out of control. Everyone in the small town gets to know Rascal, whether they want to or not - the bandit-masked mammal is especially fond of the eggs in the neighbor's chicken coops. Eventually, it's decided that Rascal will have to be returned to the wild. But Rascal doesn't want to go!

Based upon the memoir by Sterling North, the movie suffers from sluggish editing... but that little raccoon is just too cute!

Staci Layne Wilson

4 out of 5 stars A Must for Raccoon Lovers.......2004-04-30

If you are a Procyon Lotor lover, this film is for you. If you're looking for a classic, lively Walt Disney animal film--this one isn't it. The film follows Sterling North's book, and does it well. Yes, it seems to drag at times, and therefore does not "meet" the high action/drama expectations of today's viewers. But this film was made before the days of high-tech computer animations, and the coons used in it--are real--and therefore a true representation of this wonderful, mischievious critter. This whole film deals with a raccoon. It is not just a brief "tease" scene in a film for us raccoon lovers.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Film for Animal Lovers.......2004-02-18

Disney did a good job of incorporating Sterling North's story of "Rascal" into a film. The film version remains close to the book's story. While Rascal is mainly a children's film, it also good for viewers who love animals. The raccoon does a lot of cute things the film has a relatively happy ending.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing actually:.......2003-01-31

...I thought it was going to be another film like "the Incredible Journey" or even like "air bud". My son loves both these pet films and I thought this one would be cute like those. But, I actually found it to be alittle long and 'draggy'. I didn't really feel like it ever enticed even my attention. I just couldn't develop the love for the animals and characters in this one, like i did in "the Incredible Journey" and "Air Bud". Anyway, For [the money], I really can't complain. Maybe we'll give the movie another try in 6 months. I'll keep it in the video cabinet for now.

3 out of 5 stars slow and quiet movie.......2003-01-29

A warm story of a young boy who's father is a single parent, but is gone on travel as a salesman most of the time. The boy is well behaved though, and his love for animals is what gets him in trouble at times. He collects them in a way, but when he brings home a baby raccoon, things really get wild. Naturally when the raccoon grows up, it changes, and that is hard on the boy. I love old Disney films, and this is very nostalgic. But let me warn you, it is a litle slow paced. It is a neat time period, with the cars, clothes and homes. But I agree that people expect to see more fun and action with the raccoon, my son was bored too.
I wish Disney had released this in widescreen or taken the time to add any extras such as theatrical trailers, or footage from their many shows that included animals. Disney made the best animal movies of all time, and they made the most. If you want great animal stories for your kids try other Disney fare such as "Nikki the Wild Dog of the North", "Lobo", "Sammy the Way Out Seal", "Charlie the Lonesome Cougar", "The Ugly Dachsund", "That Darn Cat", and many more. Some of these are released as videos under the name Anchor Bay instead of Disney, but they are originally Disney in the theatre.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Movie.......2007-03-26

While this film might appear as somewhat dated, it is nevertheless a great movie. The story told is moving and thought provoking. And the imagery is breathtaking in spots. Obviously, the film likely had far more affect back when it came out, as buffalo were nearly extinct at the time. The story is still relevant, however. It shows what can happen when people (whether they be kids or adults) decide to make a difference.

Personally, this movie is on my top 10 list. The book is somewhat different in parts, but the film captures the spirit of Glendon Swarthout's written words. I've been to South Dakota and have seen the wild buffalo herd (about 1,500 strong) that roams throughout Custer State Park in that state. They're magnificent animals, and I can't imagine wanting to shoot them just for sport, never mind shooting them while defenseless or being unable to flee from the hunter's gun.

If you've never seen this movie, it is highly recommended. Great plot, excellent characters. Here's to the Bedwetters... Enjoy!

1 out of 5 stars Disingenuous.......2006-09-08

I enjoyed the book back in school immeasurably but the movie blew chunks. I know directors take liberties with movies in their direction. But the book's message and the movie's finale were completely different. Two completely different versions.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2006-03-18

I saw this movie in the theatre as a child soooo many years ago and loved it even though I had a hard time dealing with it (although at 11, I fell in love with one of the characters, Cotton). I remember it was on tv a few years later and again, I put this movie into my top ten favorites, but it wasn't until I was 40 that I heard the Carpenters song - Bless the Beasts and the Children on the radio, the title to this movie, and a flood of memories came back. I had to have this movie in my collection
I found this movie on Ebay one day and ended up spending a lot of money for it because I just had to have it, but I wish I would have come to Amazon.com first to get a better deal.
If you are liberal, vegetarian, hippie, animal loving or just a good hearted normal person, this movie will move you too.

5 out of 5 stars For those of us who never became cowboys.......2004-10-27

"Bless the Beasts and Children" remains among my
favorite books and movies.

Both are extraordinary evocation of childhood, done in
reverie, poetry, that manage to appeal to all generations,
for the wind does still blow in all places, and the yearning
to be accepted for what one is, to say this is what I
believe, can never die, not until the human spirit itself is
extinguished. They haunt. Who has not had memories of
wanting to free their own symbolic helpless beast,? who,
in the trying, has not or will not pay the terrible price,?
though hopefully not so terrible as that paid by
Cotton--the buffalo are the clouds in autumn gray, always.
"Lost/stumbling blind/after a dream I just can't find..."
from the film can still make me weep, as does the whole
soundtrack, and glad to be able to.

Bless Glendon Swarthout forever for his unique bold
novel, and Miles, who was there to tell him. Bless Stanley
Kramer for making such a superb movie of it, and that
splendid cast, the lovely music, the sorrowful theme
performed so lovingly, so forlornly, by the Carpenters.
One of my cats was named Lally 2 after the character in
"Bless the Beasts..". My Lally had dreams also. I'd like to
think he has now found them come true.

Like the boys in the film and novel, he was gentle, and he
was sensitive, and he stayed with me all day long when I
was so ill. All those months. Those wise large brown
eyes, that seemed so concerned, so warm, and the paw he
always kept on my wrist as we lay in bed most of the day,
like he wanted to be sure he knew I knew he was there.
How like the movie and novel he was.

It was summer when I read the heartbreaking novel.
November when I saw the sometimes sad beyond bearable
film. It has helped make always November a very sweet
month, and summer finer, because of them. If you are a
parent, reading this, see the movie, read the book, then
consider carefully and then pray that your children do or
do not become Bedwetters at the Box Canyon Camp for
Boys--"send us a boy--we'll send you a cowboy" becomes
in the misfits world, "Send us a sad child; we will
accidentally send you a human being of worth and
strength and precision of sight." The cost, though, as one
critic wrote, the terrible cost involved.

There are some movies that become a pattern of memory,
as there are some books. And if one has the hope of
believing in something no one else sees as worthwhile, and
if one can pass by the portals of fools successfully, you
can follow, and your dream may blow up in your face and
it may end in such a sad lesson, but to be pushed in a mud
puddle by bullies, in only your underwear, to be laughed
at, and called names, and to have a boy named Cotton
come along and talk with you, and make you feel like
somebody, and start you on a heroic adventure, then
sometimes the terrible wracking cost is worth it. Maybe.

Why the movie did not do well at the box office is beyond
me. It is prescient right to this second and always will be.
Stanley Kramer was known for making epics like
"Judgment at Nuremberg," another fine film. But this
"little movie" is an epic of the heart. It maintains
Swarthout's free form dream like sometimes caustic
character studies. It shows how parents caught in booze
and fights and delusion and divorce, can destroy their
children. The opening of the film shows this so
frighteningly, so chillingly. And then shows the specificity
of each child's nightmare. That turns real.

Though "Lost," the most haunting song in the film, has
been for some years now the theme song of the soap,
which is, I believe, "The Young and The Restless," it
deserves hearing as it should be heard with those aching
lyrics, in this movie.

It is about the world children and animals secretly see. It
is about the world they see too well, and turn their backs
on. It is about crying too often, feeling too much, and
being too scared, or too weak, or too thin, or too fat, or
too sissy. It is about the depth of deftness and conscience,
and how sometimes to free buffalo from monstrous
deaths, is to free something so intangible you never can
quite pin it down, which is as it should be, and to try. And
God forever bless the beasts and children, please "keep
them safe," please "keep them warm." They are the most
deserving of all. And the most in need.

And also, keep in your prayers, please, Glendon
Swarthout (who wrote books, this one especially, as
lovely as his name) and the fine film makers who put
everything they had in this film. It is unique, unwavering,
courageous, and a little plea of sanity and hope to all of us
Bedwetters out here.

The first indication that this made-for-TV tribute to <I>Lost in Space</I> was hastily slapped together is its choice of hosts. Instead of picking somebody associated with the show, or with show creator Irwin Allen, or even with science fiction, the producers picked sitcom star John Larroquette. That's the first of a series of awkward choices (Larroquette's banter with the Robot is particularly awful), which reaches its nadir in a segment in which Billy Mumy, Jonathan Harris, and the Robot reunite--in character as Will Robinson, Dr. Smith, and the Robot--on the reconstructed deck of the <I>Jupiter 2</I>, and pretend to get lost in space... forever! Ick.

The fact that Billy Mumy was a producer and cowriter on this project only erodes the credibility he built up for himself by being half of the musical duo Barnes & Barnes (whose "Fish Heads" video was directed by character actor Bill Paxton). Was Mumy really "one of the busiest and most versatile child actors of the decade"? (Busiest, perhaps.) Was the premiere of the 1998 film version of <I>Lost in Space</I> really "the most eagerly anticipated in motion picture history"? Doubtful. But there are some nice moments pulled out of the archive. Clips from the original pilot are shown in length with no annoying commentary, and the screen test of Guy Williams (Prof. John Robinson) shows a charming man who might be described as a '60s version of George Clooney. Recommended for hardcore fans of the show who are willing to sort through the modern-day crap for the archival gems. <I>--Andy Spletzer</I>

I read the other amazon reviews about this show and was almost reluctant to buy it. However being a hardcore fan of Lost in Space, I bought it and very much enjoyed it. I think John Larroquette hosted the show wonderfully regardless of his lack of affiliation with it. I do agree with one thing: The "BONUS Footae" became quite boring after awhile. Unfortunately there was NO SOUND and it was just LONG, OVERLY-EXTENDED scenes of the cyclops giant, the chariot, and the Jupiter 2. Other than that, I enjoyed the reenactment of grown-up Will, aged Smith and the Robot getting lost in space. It was evident to me that Jonathan Harris hadn't changed a bit and was an outstanding actor until the end. They could have done so much more with this show, perhaps it was hastily put together. I have to agree with Andy Spletzer: "Recommended for hardcore fans of the show."

5 out of 5 stars I liked it. Worth the $$$ to me.......2005-07-02

After reading the many lukewarm reviews here, I didn't have very high expectations for this DVD of a 1998 documentary produced in part to hype the Lost In Space motion picture released around that time. But after hearing that there was one last scene on here with the 1960s Dr. Smith and Will Robinson in character circa 1998, I knew I HAD to have this.

Turned out the documentary itself wasn't half as bad as I had been dreading. In fact I'd say overall it's pretty decent. Yeah, so John Laroquette is irrelevant to LIS, but I've seen many other documentaries hosted by people equally unrelated to their subject matter (--hell, Bill Mumy himself sometimes acts as host of Biography). At least Laroquette wasn't particularly irritating here like he could have been.

Maybe if you're a hardcore LIS fan who has read every book and article available on the subject, then there probably won't be much new here for you. But as someone who always enjoyed the show but hasn't really gotten into the fandom side of things, this documentary was just right for me and I picked up many a new fact here and there (eg.: John "Star Wars" Williams did the music for LIS too? I did not know that. And the guy who did the robot's voice was a completely different person from the one inside the suit? I did not know that either.)

It was great seeing the remaining cast members as they looked in 1998 and finding out what they had been doing during all the years since. I also found this documentary very useful when trying to educate friends brand new to the classic LIS with more background info on the show. It really helps to show them how important this show is to many people (yes, I am NOT a freak for liking this!), and why. After watching this, they are not quite so dismissive of the show and are more willing to try and give it a chance.

Bonus material includes the original network promo presentation for potential advertisers (now also available on one of the LIS TV show DVDs), some SFX footage they shot of the giant cyclops for the show's pilot (I was surprised it was in colour. Did they shoot all the B & W shows in colour first?), and Guy Williams' screen test for Irwin Allen to get the part of Prof. John Robinson (my squeaky-clean image of Prof. Robinson is forever destroyed thanks to a moment when Williams seems intent on revealing to Irwin Allen the tender young age he lost his virginity at. Gah!)

But the real highlight here is of course the scene with Will and Dr. Smith. Both actors deliver their lines as convincingly as if they had just walked off the 60s set, and the Jupiter II mock-up they are in looks quite authentic too. The scene is over in a brief couple of minutes and the ending is a little silly, but I have to say it was really great just to get one final glimpse of them. It will be the last, unfortunately, due to the death of Jonathan Harris just months after. I really wish they had done more like this and sooner, but I guess something is better than nothing....

So for me, this disc was the perfect way to complete my LIS DVD collection. Just like the extra disc included especially for the fans in the Space 1999 DVD Megaset, it adds that last little something extra that's really nice to have. I think that this is one of those obscure titles that will be highly sought-after by fans after it goes out of print, so grab it while you can.

(--And for any people reading this from the DVD-making biz, howsabout releasing the episode of the 80s gameshow "Family Feud" that they mention in this documentary, where the cast of LIS were guests? I'd buy that!)

4 out of 5 stars Great, but could have had a little more.......2005-04-03

I'm not sure why someone would question the choice for the host of the show. John LaR was just fine, seeming to grasp the importance of Lost in Space to its fans. he also seemed to blend in with the inside humour.
I would have liked to have seen some outtakes, but you can't have it all.
As stated by another, the colour was great. Seeing Guy Williams doing the interview was very enlightening to me. He's been described as a 50's/60's George Cluny. Bull! He is an Errol Flynn if there ever was one, and that screen test mkaes him seem more akin to Flynn in that cocky way. Cluny does not have the features of those two, nor could he be considered a looker at all, in comparison.
To see Johnathon Harris have some fun again was great. At the time of the 1997 movie he was asked if he did a cameo in the film. His answer was, "Cameos? We do not do cameos!"
Mumy actually seemed like a kid again, which is strange for all the growing up he had to do. He was fine.
All of the interviews were much appreciated, but a tad too short.
Watching this made me decide to get all of the DVD's of the three seasons, but I am going to wait to see if there is a package of all of them when the second half of the third season hits. Sure beats cable-cr**ola.

3 out of 5 stars One Last Trip Aboard the Jupiter 2.......2003-02-23

While the majority of this DVD is a rehash of other Lost in Space documentaries, it is worth purchasing for the last 10 minutes of the main feature - in which Dr. Smith and Will reappear aboard the pretty accuruate reconstruction of the Jupiter 2 - in full character and costume. The late great Johnathan Harris shows he can still play Dr. Smith to a tee. While its a shame he did not live to participate in the "Voyage Home" TV movie, this is the next best thing seeing these memorable characters give it one last show. Also interesting is the "making of" segment showing the filming of the final segment. No serious Lost in Space should be without having this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage Disney, funny, animals, nice old car.......2005-09-05

Sammy The Way Out Seal is your average 1960s Disney family-animal comedy, with several effectively amusing comedy sequences and, probably due to Norman Tokar's direction, a uniquely aesthetic underwater swimming scene, as the 3 children, the seal, and a dog play in a suburban pool. Tokar directed episodes of Leave It To Beaver and several Disney movies including Big Red, Savage Sam, Rascal, and A Tiger Walks.

The story, similar to "Andre" 30 years later, is about a wild seal adopted by two boys played by Michael McGreevey (a Disney regular) and Billy Mumy (Dear Brigitte, Lost In Space, Bless The Beasts and Children).

Robert Culp (I Spy, Greatest American Hero) is the boys' father, and Patricia Barry their mother. Personally, I love the old station wagon they drive.

Jack Carson (Destry Rides Again, The Hard Way, A Star Is Born, etc.) is a town big wig, a business associate of the father. His daughter, the little girl who joins the seal and boys in the pool, is played by young Ann Jillian

Some of the funnier scenes involve the seal concealed in a baby carriage, as the boys try to sneak around with it. In one scene it ends up on an elevator, and repair men think it's a baby, but it keeps pushing the buttons and they, and the boys, run up and down the stairs trying to catch up with the elevator.

There's plenty of mischief and slapstick comedy like this to keep the movie interesting and amusing, and a number of dogs join in for the finale.

4 out of 5 stars Good; clean fun........2004-03-27

I just wanted to write this review because this is one of my favorite silly; older; clean; family Disney films. I so enjoy good clean fun. And this one is so imaginative and humorous. Just about what could be more fun than the idea of two brothers coming home from a summer vacation with an adorable but mischievous seal and trying to keep him hidden from mom and dad? All the cast do their parts really well. I especially like Robert Culp's humor. He just so adds to the picture. I guess my favorite scenes are when the seal eats what is supposed to be a very expensive collection of tropical fish and the chaotic and humorous scene in the grocery store. Sophisticated; modern audiences may not appreciate this film; but they don't know what they're missing. Now this is good family entertainment! Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars Operation Adopt-A-Seal, in a Hilarious Way!.......2003-11-02

Bill Mummy (Lost In Space), and Michael McGreevey (Snowball Express among other 70's Disney flicks) star as Arthur and Petey Loomis, two boys who are determined to have a great adventurous summer. While at their summer beach house, they discover a hurt seal. They quickly take him under their wings and nurse him back to health. They know their parents (Robert Culp and Patricia Barry) won't adopt such a wild animal, so when it comes time to go home at the end of the summer, they can't bear to leave Sammy the seal there and sneak him home in back of the family wagon.

When they arrive home, many hilarious things happen as they try to keep Sammy hidden. A pool party becomes a town party in the neighbors pool, and disastorous results in the town grocery store all lead up to a hilarious and enjoyable ending to a classic Disney family movie. It portrays the typical "nuclear" family that is very close. Although this isn't the norm today, it is still an enjoyable "nostalgic" film that you can let your children see without the fear of foul language, violence or sex.

Sammy the Way-Out Seal was often shown on a Wonderful World of Disney, broken up into two one hour episodes. The video is also available (usually only in rental stores, ebay or Amazon as you can see) in it's entirety.

Bill Mummy, Michael McGreevey, and the very young Ann Jillian create a very laid-back film that I enjoyed as a child, and my child now enjoys as well. The families, the clothes and the fashions may have changed, but the delightful story and innocent characters will carry on for generations to come.

4 out of 5 stars More fun than Supermarket Sweep.......2002-03-22

Brothers Arthur ( Michael McGreevey - whatever happened to him?) and Petey (Billy Mumy - before he got Lost in Space) discover and befriend a wounded seal (Sammy) while summering on the coast and nurse him back to health. Come time to go home at the end of the season, the boys bring their new friend back to inland Gatesville, without telling their parents (Patricia Barry and Robert Culp - back when he was just Arthur and Petey's Dad - not U>N>C>L>E) Sammy feels, well, like a seal out of water in his new home. The boys get help from the neighbor girl (Ann Jillian - THAT Ann Jillian?) who has a pool. Things get wet and wild later that night at her parents' pool party, when Sammy does what comes naturally to a seal. The kids try to make amends and just keep getting themselves and Sammy in deeper and deeper waters.

The reviewer from Portland is right, this can be viewed as "A period piece, this film is so campy it held my interest just observing mens' and womens' roles, the expressions used, etc." The boosterism guy wants to rip out all the quaint old gingerbread on the stores downtown and replace it with plastic and neon. The swimcaps on the women are a throwback hoot!

But the true brotherly love and their compassion for the animal is timeless. And the trek through the supermarket is one of the funniest movie segments I've ever seen!

5 out of 5 stars Sammy the Way Out Seal.......2000-04-10

I've loved this film since I was a child. My father used to rent a 16mm version of it every year for my birthday. It's hilarious! If any body has a copy of it I'd like to buy it. wcrandell@aol.com

If you had a baking soda-powered Seaview submarine when you were a kid, then you're probably a fan of <I>Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea</I>, either the movie or the TV show, where that high-tech sub originated. And therefore you're probably a fan of that show's creator, producer-director Irwin Allen, the subject of this documentary. Allen is probably best known for starting the disaster film craze in the '70s with hit movies like <I>The Poseidon Adventure</I> and <I>The Towering Inferno</I>, where he earned the title of "Master of Disaster." But perhaps he's best loved for the string of TV series he made in the '60s: <I>Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea</I>, <I>Lost in Space</I>, <I>The Time Tunnel</I>, and the bizarre <I>Land of the Giants</I>. The documentary glosses over Allen's film career, rightly spending more time on the TV shows, revealing Allen's penchant for monster costumes and using stock footage. We find out that Allen often filmed some sequences for black-and-white shows in color so he could use them later as stock footage. Also, when he needed to shoot a sequence that was supposed to be inside a whale, he saved a fortune by using leftover sets from <I>Fantastic Voyage</I>. The format of the documentary is corny, hosted by Bill Mumy and June Lockhart, along with "The Robot," all from <I>Lost in Space</I>, all hamming it up. But there is such a wealth of behind-the-scenes footage that any fan of Allen's TV shows will want to own this disc. Especially noteworthy is a bonus 55-minute featurette of series proposals, including lengthy footage of two shows that didn't make it, <I>City Beneath the Sea</I> and <I>The Man from the 25th Century</I>. That's worth the price of the disc. <I>--Jim Gay</I>

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Enthusiasm- and Monsters!.......2006-03-08

_If you remember these televison shows and movies from your younger days then this is a pleasant nostalgic experience. I also found it amazing just how much of what I found interesting on TV as a boy came from one man's vision. I think this was because there was a genuine enthusiasm in Irwin Allen for the future- and for adventure and monsters. There is quite alot of biographical footage about Allen's life thrown in (it is afterall a biographical presentation) but enough clips of the television shows and movies are included to satisfy everyone. The whole show is held together well by Bill Muny and June Lockhart- not too serious and not too hammy.

The show covers the early movies: The Sea Around Us, Animal World, The Story of Mankind, The Big Circus, Five Weeks in a Balloon, The Lost World, and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea (I remember the last three from Saturday matinees at the movies.)

Then it moves on to the four great science fiction television shows: Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, Lost in Space, Time Tunnel, and Land of the Giants. The clips are well chosen- and there are plenty of interviews with cast members and guest stars.
There are even clips from two shows that didn't make it- "Man from the 25th Century" and "City Beneath the Sea."

The rest centers primarily around his block buster movies such The Poseidon Adventure and The Towering Inferno- as well as all the other disaster flicks that followed.

You know it is funny, even as a kid I recognised the overuse of stock film footage, and the inane dialog, and the lack of scientific accuracy in much of his work- but I still watched it. I guess that was because the dream and the enthusiasm of other worlds was still there- even if he tried to do it on a low budget.

4 out of 5 stars Simply Great........2005-11-27

Basically I am doing research on TV shows and movies. Irwin Allan was one of the true characters that spanned both TV and Film.

This DVD is everything that is advertised. You also get bonus features that give you a look into Irwin Allen on the studio lot.

What I found as a great surprise in special features was the "Pitch" TV shows that didn't make it. A great lesson in blending story boarding and live action to communicate your "idea" to the people who will buy it.

Film and TV people today might laugh at the series Irwin created.. But there is much to learn from even today. Like all science fiction TV producers, Gerry Anderson, Gene Rodenbery, and others... Irwin threads the needle with his distinct vision of the future.

The music of "the worlds of" Irwin Allen is done from John Williams.. A true genius that everyone seemed to take for granted until Star Wars and Jaws. Much of the special effects and the suspension of belief that is needed to enjoy "Lost in Space" and "Time Tunnel" was the music from Johnny Williams.

If you're going to make a sci-fi Indy film, TV show or ?? This DVD should be seen and studied. This really goes for the new filmmakers that have never seen "Land of the Giants" or "Voyage to the bottom of the sea".

I would surely give this 5 stars if it wasn't part of a 1996 Sci-Fi Channel project. (seen on the sci-fi channel) If you had a Timex watch.. Give it to the "talent" at Sci-Fi and surely it would STOP TICKING.

Great fun to re-aquaint myself with these old shows. Hilarious line from Billy Mumy, and I paraphrase, "Irwin Allen was always looking for ways to top himself." meaning to improve on his work after the The Towering Inferno. Over here it means to commit suicide...

It's a shame that most of the tv material here is not yet available as DVD boxsets. My credit card is waiting in aniticipation!
