You wouldn't think a movie that uses the game of golf as a metaphor for class struggle could be so entertaining. <I>The Greatest Game Ever Played</I> stars the charming Shia LaBeouf (<I>Holes</I>) as Francis Ouimet, a golfer who, in 1913, rose from caddy to U.S. Open champion at the age of 20--despite the resistance of the powers that be, who thought it unseemly for a lower-class plebian to play the sport of gentlemen. Ouimet's main competitor is Harry Vardon (Stephen Dillane, <I>The Hours</I>), a British professional, still considered one of the greatest players of all time, who fought his own class battles. The two go head to head in a genuinely gripping match, deftly balanced against the juxtapositions of their personal struggles. Is it sentimental and formulaic? Is the outcome a foregone conclusion? Yes, but it doesn't matter--formulas exist because, when executed with verve and dexterity, they work. Bill Paxton, best known as an actor (<I>One False Move</I>, <I>Apollo 13</I>), steps into the director's chair and hits all the right notes, aided by an excellent cast playing colorful characters, a vivid recreation of the time period, glowing cinematography, and an expert pace. <I>The Greatest Game Ever Played</I> works. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

A truly inspiring movie...I want to become a golfer now!
Gentleman's Game.......2007-06-09
Epitome of the nature of the game - sportsmanship. Gentle movie dealing with the competition between two lowly-born men who were true gentlemen. I love this movie as I love the game.
The Greatest Game Ever Played.......2007-05-24
This is a great family movie about a little piece of ground breaking golf history. It is a true story about a young caddy who wins the U.S. Open in the early 1900's, and it is such and interesting story that it would appeal to both old and young viewers. My family watches this movie every time it's on so we bought it. We also bought the book that it is based on.
If you love golf this is for you.......2007-05-14
I have read this book and enjoyed it so much. I ordered this movie as a gift to my grandson who also loves golf and had read this book. We both found that much was left out of the movie but then no movie can cover everything in a good book.
The movie is about the Greatest Game Ever Played in golf. It was the U. S. Open and two very popular players from England were in Bookline, Mass to play this event. There happened to be a local young man Francis Auimet who lived next to this golf course and became fascinated with the game. He would find balls that would land in their field and he made clubs out of hickory stick and would play his own game.
He found he could become a caddie at Brookline so on certain times was able to play the course. He was discovered to have a great talent and was sponsored to play in the amateur events. During this U. S. Open he earned his way into playing this event During the difficult days of the event he was tied with these two players from England Harry Vardon and Ted Ray. Francis ended up winning on the 18 hole playoff.
An amazing story and good movie.

NASA's worst nightmare turned into one of the space agency's most heroic moments in 1970, when the Apollo 13 crew was forced to hobble home in a disabled capsule after an explosion seriously damaged the moon-bound spacecraft. Tom Hanks, Kevin Bacon, and Bill Paxton play (respectively) astronauts Jim Lovell, Jack Swigert, and Fred Haise in director Ron Howard's intense, painstakingly authentic docudrama. The Apollo 13 crew and Houston-based mission controllers race against time and heavy odds to return the damaged spacecraft safely to Earth from a distance of 205,500 miles. Using state-of-the-art special effects and ingenious filmmaking techniques, Howard and his stellar cast and crew build nail-biting tension while maintaining close fidelity to the facts. The result is a fitting tribute to the Apollo 13 mission and one of the biggest box-office hits of 1995. --Jeff Shannon
Customer Reviews:
Apollo 13 is a gripping tale of moon travel.......2007-05-19
I remember seeing this movie in the theater, and it was awesome. It still is, on DVD. The astronauts almost didn't make it back. One of the top ten movies ever made.
The extras are nice, if you have the time. Together they take at least a couple of hours.
Review.......2007-05-07
I had to replace my original Apollo 13 DVD which, after several successful playings, started to fail to "play back." Possibly, this failure was exacerbated by my attempted "fix" which was to clean the business side of the DVD with an (electronic grade) 99% alcohol cleaning solution.
At any rate, I am happy to have the new disk.
(Of the many [more than 100] DVDs I have, this is the only instance of media failure I have experienced.)
Keep It Honest !.......2007-04-29
Good movie of a great human adventure, well acted and professionally filmed.
Looks a bit stiff and un-imaginative in the developpement of the "story" but overall a very fine visualisation of this tragic-heroic piece of American history.
Can't say enough good about this movie!.......2007-04-12
There were a few "hollywood" inaccuracies that bothered me. For example, it was Meniere's disease, not an ear infection that plagued Al Shepard. Furthermore, it wasn't Menieres that kept him off Apollo 13. It was an administrative decision based on the need to give him and his rookie crew more time to train.
Other than those minor nitpicks, I REALLY enjoyed this film. I didn't obsess over the missed details, mind you. This is, after all, a hollywood adaptation of Jim Lovell's recounting. Facts are going to be skewed a bit here and there. As entertainment value goes, it was wonderful! Suspenseful, emotional and, all-in-all, pretty close to the reality of the situation.
As historical movies go, it actually wasn't too bad on accuracy. And what it lacked in accuracy, it more than made up for in sheer entertainment value.
Jim Lovell's cameo in the end was the icing on the cake.
well told technically accurate film.......2007-02-28
I first saw this film at the cinemas back in 1995 and have seen it countless times since then. I have always been a space enthusiast and remember reading books about astronauts and the Saturn V rocket as a kid. This film is probably the most technically accurate spaceflight film out there. I love how all the zero G scenes are real (filmed in KC-135 aircraft) and all of the switches, lights etc. in the Command module are 100% realistic. The Saturn V liftoff was incredible. This film is still as exciting to watch today as it was back when it came out.

This is the film that cemented Schwarzenegger's spot in the action-brawn firmament, and it was well deserved. He's chilling as the futuristic cyborg who kills without fear, without love, without mercy. James Cameron's story and direction are pared to the bone and all the more creepy. But don't overlook the contributions of Linda Hamilton, who more than holds her own as the Terminator's would-be victim, Sarah Connor--thus creating, along with Sigourney Weaver in <I>Alien</I>, a new generation of rugged, clear-thinking female action stars. It's surprising how well this film holds up, and how its minimalist, malevolent violence is actually way scarier than that of its far more expensive, more effects-laden sequel. <I>--Anne Hurley</I>
Description
In the year 2029, the ruling super-computer, Skynet, sends an indestructible cyborg (Arnold Schwarzenegger) back in time to 1984 to kill Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) before she can fulfill her destiny and save mankind.
Customer Reviews:
Great Movie, but this is not the Special Edition DVD........2007-06-23
Don't be fooled, I have been looking everywhere for the Real Special Edition DVD.
The first DVD was a barebones Disc that was non-anamorphic. Then in 2001 MGM released the Special Edition with the following features.
- Other Voices Documentry.
- Terminator: a retrospective fetturette.
- Deleted Scenes with optional Commentary
- Theatrical trailers and TV spots.
- DVD-ROM features.
The DVD that Amazon is selling is only includes one trailer and some DVD-ROM stuff. I can't find the Special Edition DVD anywhere. Also, there are three Reagon 2 releases, a Special Editon, a Definitive Edition, and an Ultimate Edition! Why aren't there any Reagon 1 Ultimate Editions, all we have is a barebones Disc with no good extras. Someone tell me where I can find the Reagon 1 Special Edition DVD.
Man plus Machine equals Schwarzenegger!.......2007-06-16
Entertainment Weekly recently touted the first sequel ("Terminator 2: Judgment Day") to this film as being one of The Twenty-Five Best Action Films of all time. That title may be an accurate assessment of the non-stop action of the sequel but what would it have been without its predecessor which ranks as one of the best science fiction commentaries on the path that we may be going with our computer-dependent society.
James Cameron scored a casting coup when he gave the role to Arnold. At the time, the muscle-bound actor had had a few films under his belt, films that played mostly on his physical appearance and his novice acting skills. "The Terminator" character was short on dialogue but Cameron made the best of his star by providing him with one-line zingers and stares that could wake the dead.
To call the part "tailor-made" for Schwarzenegger would be a major understatement. He was muy perfecto.
Linda Hamilton, not yet the household name that she would become for TV's "Beauty and the Beast," as well as not yet the future "Mrs. James Cameron," is appropriately confused and terrified as the waitress that would ultimately become the mother of the man that would rescue humanity.
Michael Biehn is well-cast as the other traveler from the future, intent on preventing Arnold's malevolent cyborg from doing his killing-thing.
Stan Winston's effects still hold their own after almost a quarter of a century.
Great movie.......2007-06-07
Great movie, pretty impressive FX for it's time. The Blu-ray version suffers a little due to this movie's old master. It's no where near being Pirates of the Carabean clear (Probably the best Blu-ray video quality so far).
There are some extras, one which show the making of the FX, which is a plus.
But for 19 dollars, it's a no brainer. Get Blu-Ray version if you don't already own DVD version.
The Terminator.......2007-05-27
Lots of action from beginning to end. If you love an action film, this is for you!
Schwarzenegger was a perfect pick to play this character.
The History Of This Movie (and of course the review).......2007-05-20
Since I'm a HUGE Terminator freak (I've read ALL of the books I could get my hands on about the Terminator series),I also know the history of this movie and it's rather quite interesting:
James Cameron actually made this movie after he had a nightmare about a killer robot from the future and from there, he created one of my favorite movies of all time; The Terminator (T2 was FAR superior but that's another story).
Before they starting filming they actually wanted Arnold to be the good guy but once he read the script for Cyberdyne System's Model 101 (or better known as the Terminator) Mr. Cameron decided to put him as the killer robot.
James Cameron called his good friend Stan Winston to be apart of the film (Stan Winston is an AMAZING special effects artist; he also did work for another film starring Arnold; Predator), he drew up the skeleton for CSM-101.
At the time Linda Hamilton was dating James Cameron; he put her in the main role of Sarah Connor and the rest is history.
The story goes like this; in August 21, 1997 Cyberdyne launched nuclear warheads at Russia, and after mankind was nearly wiped out thanks to the nuclear winter, there was another war; a war against the machines.
John Connor decided to launch a rebellion against the machines but the war must be fought in the past before John is born.
Cyberdyne decided to send a machine back into the past to kill the mother of John Connor back in 1984, but along with the machine comes John's father Kyle Reese to help Sarah and to help train her into becoming the soldier of the future so she can train her son into the man that he is going to become.
The movies are VERY INTERESTING to me and I'm not into sci-fi at all but I LOVE The Terminator series and everything that is associated with it, so if you haven't seen it yet (God knows where you have been if you haven't seen this movie yet) or just want to catch a really good flick this is the movie for you.

The <I>Alien Quadrilogy</I> is a nine-disc boxed set devoted to the four <I>Alien</I> films. Although previously available on DVD as the <I>Alien Legacy</I>, here they have been repackaged with vastly more extras and with upgraded sound and picture. For anyone who hasn't been in hypersleep for the last 25 years, this series needs no introduction, though for the first time each film now comes in both original and "special edition" form.
<I>Alien</I> (1979) was so perfect it didn't need fixing, and Ridley Scott's 2003 director's cut is fiddling for the sake of fiddling. Watch it once, then return to the majestic, perfectly paced original. Conversely, the special edition of James Cameron's <I>Aliens</I> (1986) is the definitive version, though it's nice to finally have the theatrical cut on DVD for comparison. Most interesting is the alternative <I>Alien 3</I> (1992). This isn't a "director's cut"--David Fincher refused to have any involvement with this release--but a 1991 work-print that runs 29 minutes longer than the theatrical version, and has now been restored, remastered, and finished off with (unfortunately) cheap new CGI. Still, it's truly fascinating, offering a different insight into a flawed masterpiece. The expanded opening is visually breathtaking, the central firestorm is much longer, and a subplot involving Paul McGann's character adds considerable depth to story. The ending is also subtly but significantly different. <I>Alien: Resurrection</I> (1997) always was a mess with a handful of brilliant scenes, and the special edition just makes it eight minutes longer.
The <I>Alien Quadrilogy</I> offers the first and fourth films with DTS soundtracks, the others having still fine Dolby Digital 5.1 presentation. All four films sound fantastic, with much low-level detail revealed for the first time. Each is anamorphically enhanced at the correct original aspect ratio, and the prints and transfers are superlative. Every film offers a commentary track that lends insight into the creative process--though the Scott-only commentary and isolated music score from the first <I>Alien</I> DVD release are missing here.
Each movie is complemented by a separate disc packed with hours of seriously detailed documentaries (all presented in full-screen with clips letterboxed), thousands of photos, production stills, and storyboards, giving a level of inside information for the dedicated buff only surpassed by the <I>Lord of the Rings</I> extended DVD sets. A ninth DVD compiles miscellaneous material, including an hourlong documentary and even all the extras from the old <I>Alien</I> laserdisc. "Exhaustive" hardly beings to describe the <I>Alien Quadrilogy</I>, a set that establishes the new DVD benchmark for retrospective releases and looks unlikely to be surpassed for some time. <I>--Gary S. Dalkin</I>

A Must Have For Any Alien Fan.......2007-05-23
I have been a fan of the Alien movies since I was a kid. I never got to see any in theaters except for Alien Resurection. This is a great set and each movie has extended or deleted scenes added to the films. The first two, Alien and Aliens are great classic movies and the extended scenes make the classics that much better. The final two, Alien 3 and Alien Resurection are the mos underated in my opinion. Alien 3 was a great movie but has alot more cursing than the other three but it fits considering it is set in a prison. There was a bunch deleted from this film and it really adds alot to it as several key scenes are completly different and make more sense IMO. The only issue is that the added scenes have degraded over time and some of the dialouge was unusable so at times the audio is hard to hear, but it is still very interesting to watch. Alien Resurection was the most underated of the four and while it's not the best it is still a good movie. The added scenes really make it that much better. The special features on all of these movies are imense and this is one set that is a must buy for Alien fans and science fiction lovers.

Warning for potential buyers... the cd of Alien 4 is full of compression errors and won't even play on my dvd player. I managed to start the movie by scene jumping, but halfway through on a scene jump the movie stalled, dumping me into a "dvd video compression" screen, and I could not access anything beyond this point.
I don't know if I have a defective cd or if there are scores of compression problems with this product.
Caveat emptor.
A must have!.......2007-05-15
This is a fabulous boxed set, especially if you can get it at a decent price. It is available on-line and in some shops at very comptetitive prices.
Alien and Aliens are already classics (as everybody knows) and merit repeated viewings.
The 3rd and 4th are not up to the same standard but have their moments.
There are 9 DVD's in total.
Disc 1 contains both versions of Alien + Commentaries
Disc 2 contains documentaries on Alien
Disc 3 contains both versions of Aliens + Commentaries
Disc 4 contains documentaries on Aliens
I have watched these and they are very good. Especially in relation to creating the special effects and James Cameron working in the UK at Pinewood (there were problems - indeed almost a strike!).
Disc 5 contains both versions of Alien3 + Commentaries
Disc 6 contains documentaries on Alien3
I have watched some of this and there is some fascinating information on the original script and director.
Disc 7 contains both versions of Alien Resurrection + Commentary
Disc 8 contains documentaries on Alien Resurrection
Disc 9 More Extras
All in all a superb set to get.
A fan must have!.......2007-05-12
I've always been fan of the Alien series and I wanted to have them all in one package, and this set box is great. The 9 discs are worth the price and you can get to see other versions not previously seen, which are excellent and give you a different perspective. Only the first one has no major changes, maybe a few extended scenes, but the rest of them are amazing! My favorite so far is "Alien Resurrection", when we get to see a glimpse of earth after soooo many years and Ripley is finally home. Get it ONLY if you're a true fan, otherwise...
Oh Goodness.........2007-04-25
I'm having wonderful thoughts about tHe beautiful Sigorney Weaver..Winona Riders in this and H.R Gigier's monsters make everything come so (When is "Classmates" going to be back uP..I'D rather be visiting Amy Roskelley's profile..)alive..

This Western has become a modest cult favorite since its release in 1993, when the film was met with mixed reviews but the performances of Kurt Russell (as Wyatt Earp) and especially Val Kilmer, for his memorably eccentric performance as the dying gunslinger Doc Holliday, garnered high praise. The movie opens with Wyatt Earp trying to put his violent past behind him, living happily in Tombstone with his brothers and the woman (Dana Delany) who puts his soul at ease. But a murderous gang called the Cowboys has burst on the scene, and Earp can't keep his gun belt off any longer. The plot sounds routine, and in many ways it is, but Western buffs won't mind a bit thanks to a fine cast and some well-handled action on the part of Rambo director George P. Cosmatos, who has yet to make a better film than this. --Jeff Shannon

Tombstone is one of my favorite movies!!! I thought it was about time I bought the DVD.
Tombstone is tops.......2007-06-11
This movie is very close to the actual circumstances of the OK Corral. Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliot (who is so perfect in westerns it makes you wonder if he was time shifted from 1880!!), and Bill Paxton are great! Then you see some of the actors from classic western movies and TV back as older men. Another one that we have memorized the lines to and still have to watch it each time it is on the satellite!! If you've never seen it....buy it, pop some popcorn, pour some butter on it and turn on the home theater!!
Tombstone review.......2007-06-08
Excellent movie. Hard to beat if you are a true western fan. Amazon service is great!
Phenomenal.......2007-06-05
This movie is absolutely awesome. Sure, that sounds like a young awe struck boy in its description of the film, but that is what it reduced me to. Some of the best one-liners of all-time, and a great chemistry between the always solid Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer. Kilmer is at his best as the Consumption addled (read TB) Doc Holliday. This is a novie that I have never heard a bad thing about, even though the discussions almost always involve guys. Really a fun and well-made film. One of the few movies that I can watch time and time again. A 5 star classic. Enjoy!!!
A gorgeous example of western nobility and honor..........2007-05-24
"Tombstone" is a classic American film of honor and nobility. In a time when villains openly used force, true heroes stood up to these men not because they were tough guys, but because they knew they were right. It provides a fine example of how cowards and bullies rely on fear and intimidation to gain their power, and how one needs only be strong to stand up to them.
Kurt Russell plays one of the most conflicted, yet noble characters with gravitas and strength. Val Kilmer as "Doc Holliday" steals the show as the southern gentleman with an unfortunate affliction and deadly vices. The Villains, led by Powers Booth as Curly Bill, are fantastic and able acting foils to the protagonists. The entire cast is strong and the script is outstanding.
This movie should be a standard for every young man on the nobility in honor, the value of intelligence and education, and the merits of being a gentleman.

Product Description
The house rips apart piece by piece. A bellowing cow spins through the air. Tractors fall like rain. A 15,000-pound gasoline tanker becomes an airborne bomb. A mile-wide, 300 miles-per-hour force of total devastation is coming at you: Twister is hitting home. In this adventure swirling with cliffhanging excitement and awesome special effects, Helen Hunt and Bill Paxton play scientists pursuing the most destructive weatherfront to sweep through mid-America's Tornado Alley in 50 years. By launching electronic sensors into the funnel, the storm chasers hope to obtain enough data to create an improved warning system. But to do so, they must intercept the twisters' deadly path. The chase is on!

<I>Twister</I> was a mega-million-dollar blockbuster--helmed by a director (Dutchman Jan de Bont) hot off another scorcher hit (<I>Speed</I>)--that flaunted state-of-the-art digital effects and featured a popular leading actress (Helen Hunt) who would win an Academy Award for her next film (<I>As Good As It Gets</I>). But ask anybody who's seen it and they'll tell you who the real star of <I>Twister</I> is: the cow. Not to give anything away, but the cow is one of those inspired little touches (like, say, Bronson Pinchot's career-making cameo in <I>Beverly Hills Cop</I>) that adds a touch of personality to a gigantic Hollywood production. The story is blown out the window after an impressive prologue in which Hunt's character, as a little girl, witnesses her daddy being sucked into a tornado. Basically, Hunt and Bill Paxton are thrill-seeking meteorologists chasing twisters in order to study them (and help warn people of them, of course) with a new technology they've developed. If you thought the Kansas tornado in <I>The Wizard of Oz</I> was every bit as scary as the Wicked Witch of the West, then this may be the movie for you. <I>--Jim Emerson</I>

Twister, not just a party game.......2007-06-15
Being from the west coast I never had a whole lot of interest in the natural phenomena showcased in this film. Where I live an inch of rain is headline news. I had absolutely no interest in Twister until I saw it was on late one boring night. Having nothing better to do, I obliged the television and payed attention. I found Twister to be what I call a nice bedtime movie. While it failed to anthropomorphize the tornado the way Backdraft successfully did with fire, the characters were well fleshed out, there was a healthy balance of comedy, drama and (at the time) cutting edge special FX. I found that as long as the viewer came in with no expectation, Twister would be a fun and easy to watch nappy time movie, perfect for watching on a rainy day, curled up with a blanket. So to sum everything up, don't expect an epic, emotionally charged extravaganza, but if you are willing to accept a decently woven story with reasonably believable characters, and have a rainy afternoon to kill, check out Twister. You shouldn't be too disappointed.
A game of Twister anyone?.......2007-05-17
The funnest game of Twister I've EVER seen! Good movie, good cast. Watch it miss this house, hit that house, and then come straight for you.
GREAT.......2007-05-14
The movie was great seen it one thousand times, perfect condition and the seller i received my copy from was wonderful. Recommend to anyone who likes Tornadoes.
Twister is about characters........2007-05-14
Sure most of the relationships and characters are one dimensional, but they're still loads of fun. Sure you know what's coming, but it looks really amazing when it gets there.
Twister is an action movie with a little romance and comedy thrown in, but it's really the relationship between the main to characters and the fun dialogue between all that make you want to watch this over and over again.
As for realism, who cares, it's an action movie. But to be fair as unbelievable as most of this looks tornados really can do most of the things that are seen.
Overall, a fun ride.
one of the best disater movies of all time.......2007-05-08
This was one of my favoriote movies I saw grown up in my adolescent years. The story is about Jo a young woman living in the late eigties or ealy ninties who is obbsed with tornado after she saw here father sucked up and killed by and f5 tornado when she was about ten years old. Joining here I Hunt her ex husband and his new wife. The three go on adventures with his storm chaser bodies and tornadoes get bigger and the action more intense as it gets futher into the movie. The second half of the movie after the scene at the out door movie theater gets super intense. Can they survive the twisters and be the first people to take measurements inside there funnel with assitance of four weather machines filled with seansr all nicked named Dorthy. This action packed adventure movie will have you sitting on the edge of your seat and screaming for more. If you like this I also recommend Night of Twister, Volcano, and Earthquake if you can find it. This movie should be fine for 13 and up due to some heavy language and heavy peril scenes for a movie of its time. This movie is worth having regardless of the price. I say about 15 to 30 dollars is a reasonable price to pay for this movie depending on the conditon.

<I>Aliens</I> is one of the few cases of a sequel that far surpassed the original. Sigourney Weaver returns as Ripley, who awakens on Earth only to discover that she has been hibernating in space so long that everyone she knows is dead. Then she is talked into traveling (along with a squad of Marines) to a planet under assault by the same aliens that nearly killed her. Once she gets there, she finds a lost little girl who triggers her maternal instincts--and she discovers that the company has once again double-crossed her, in hopes of capturing one of the aliens to study as a military weapon. Directed and written by James Cameron, this is one of the most intensely exciting (not to mention intensely frightening) action films ever, with a large ensemble cast that includes Bill Paxton, Lance Henriksen, Paul Reiser, and Michael Biehn. Weaver defined the action woman in this film and walked away with an Oscar nomination for her trouble. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>
Description
In this action-packed sequel to Alien, Sigourney Weaver returns as Ripley, the only survivor from mankind's first encounter with the monstrous Alien. Her account of the Alien and the fate of her crew are received with skepticism - until the mysterious disappearance of colonists on LV-426 leads her to join a team of high-tech colonial marines sent in to investigate. <P>Personally supervised by director James Cameron, this special edition includes scenes eliminated prior to the film's 1986 release which broaden the narrative scope and enrich the emotional impact of the film.
Customer Reviews:
Marketing ploy to enjoy.......2007-06-16
If you're not the type to run out and replace your VCR collection as soon as the new format arrives, you probably appreciate a slightly clever ploy to spring for a new version of a classic. An additional 17 minutes of film may seem little justification for this expensive proposition. But seeing the slimey xenomorphs on DVD is reward enough for a fan. The discs include the theatrical release and the director's cut along with other extras, which include an interview with director James Cameron. Cameron dwells excessively on his strained patience dealing with a British film crew. His comments may reveal insight into Cameron's choice to forgo taking the director's seat for the third film (which received some critical acclaim but disappointed fans).
I originally screened Aliens in the theater in July 1986. I remember watching the credits roll with the powerful soundtrack that kept the heart pounding as the last of the text disappeared. Even with the lights coming up, the sound of a slithering alien sent chills down my spine. Sadly, this part of the track is missing from this set.
Successive viewings have not spoiled enjoyment of this finely crafted script and its special effects. Rubber suits, scale models and puppetry have never been used to such great effect. The scenes involving the "drop ship" are stunning. The breathless sequence that takes the drop ship from the mother ship to the planet's surface is but one of many that make this nightmare so real.
Few pauses and a lot of action pace this relentless story. Cameron's decision to write Marines into the confrontation was nothing shy of genius. The Marines think they're heading to a "bug hunt." Bill Paxton's Hudson, who provides comedic relief, describes the array of weaponry they bring. But for all the techno gadetry and fire power, the Marines find themselves stranded amid an army of aliens intent on making them hosts for more bugs. Sigourney Weaver's Ripley, whom we didn't know was a parent from the original release, provides a first-rate performance in the escape ahead of the massing aliens.
Cameron's tip of the hat to Hitchcock is one the best moments in cinematic history. The confrontation in the bowels of the disintegrating atmosphere generating plant is as disturbing as anything science fiction has to offer. Not since Hitchcock's "The Birds" has there been anything like it. And, there's more. The final battle with the queen alien is a masterpiece of action filming. Not until the survivors are snuggly tucked into their cryotubes, do we finally get to gasp a sigh of relief.
This Time There's More..........2007-05-31
After achieving huge critical and box office success with 1979's "Alien", it is surprising that 20th Century Fox didn't rush a sequel into production, although at the time sequels were not so quick to arrive after their predecessors, but still the property was hot and the decision would have made them a lot of money. On the flip side, if a sequel had been rushed, the story may have suffered which would have lent to reduced box office and possibly the death of the franchise, so it's probably a good thing that Fox exercised patience with this franchise and waited 7 years before releasing the James Cameron directed sequel, "Aliens" to excited audiences worldwide.
"Aliens" begins with Ripley (Sigourney Weaver), the only surviving member of the Nostromo crew, being discovered by a salvage ship a half century after the events in "Alien". Upon arriving on Earth, she discovers that a human colony has been set up on the very planet her former crew had found the creatures on. Not surprisingly, contact with that colony has been lost, and a squad of Marines are being prepared to be sent to the planet to determine what happened, if there are any survivors, and exterminate whatever creatures are left. However, the best bet the Marines have for success is if Ripley returns with them to the planet, so after just recovering from her fight with the first alien, and her excessively long sleep, Ripley finds herself face-to-face once more with the creatures of her nightmares.
James Cameron (director of "The Terminator") was given no small task when he wrote and directed this sequel to the incredible 1979 film "Alien". A major decison that Cameron made in creating this movie was changing the tone and type of movie this is from that of its predecessor. Instead of being a methodical game of cat-and-mouse, relying heavily on atmosphere and the audience's imagination to craft the horror like the first movie, "Aliens" was a much more action-packed thrill ride with a little bit of horror thrown into the mix. The decision could have been costly by isolating fans of the work Ridley Scott had done on the first film; however, the decision worked out for the best, delivering audiences what is quite possibly a superior movie to "Alien". The story was much faster paced, yet still not skimpy on the details or the fear factor, with more action involving the aliens. Though shadows were not used as heavily in this film as they were in the original, the suspense surrounding when and where the aliens would strike next was equally thrilling to that of Ridley Scott's creation. The special effects work in this one was better than the original (as it should be considering advancements made during the 7 year gap between films), but the best part about the effects for this movie was the practical effects work that was done to create the massive alien creature known as the Queen. The effects for that alien is some of the best practical effects seen in almost any movie, and the final fight between the Queen and Ripley is incredibly fun to watch.
The cast, led by Sigourney Weaver (the only returning cast member from the original), was full of talented actors such as Michael Biehn, Paul Reiser, and Lance Henriksen who each brought a depth and reality to each of their characters that is often lacking in action/horror films. The success of "Aliens", coupled with that of the first film brought even more acclaim for actress Sigourney Weaver, who solidified her place in the pantheon of great action heroes (or heroines), and even garnered her an Oscar nomination for her work in this film.
"Aliens" is rated R for violence and language.
A classic science fiction movie with Sigourney Weaver at her best.......2007-05-17
It is very rare that we have the chance to see a science fiction movie where part two of the movie was better than part one. This is that kind of movie. If you are a fan of science fiction movies then you must add this one to your collection. Although this one was better than the first (Alien 1979), you'll still want to add the first one to your collection as another science fiction classic.
A brilliant sequel.......2007-04-19
James Cameron directed one of the most exciting and fascinating SF action adventure films ever made in Aliens. Not only does the story flow seamlessly from the first film of the series, Alien, but the characters, special effects and directorial pacing cause the film to pound like a sledge hammer from start to finish. The action is nearly non-stop once it begins and the character of Ripley as all protagonists should be, is driven further and further up that tree of absolute peril until you are just sure she'll be torn limb from limb. The grisly antagonists drive the action with such relentless power that the screen seems to come alive with their swarming malice. No surprise there though, since these monsters were dreamt up by Dan O'Bannon and Ron Shusett and brought to organic, ghastly life by the artist and sculptor H.R. Giger. If you haven't seen it, see it. If you've seen it already, see it again and tune into the finer cinematic touches that make the danger so palpable, especially the sound.

Oh yeah. Ripley as the Orkin Man. This is the version with the extra dialog, softening her up a bit. It was a bit noticeable, but I've seen this about 50 times so it was more apparent to me. It was actually kind of good because it made her transformation all the more logical. The movie is rip roaring great on all levels. The bugs are on screen much more than in Alien, and the momma bug is a sight to see. The two momma figures battling it out over their progeny (sort of) is truly great ("leave her alone, you beotch!" being a highlight). Special effects are good, Sigourney Weaver is good, Bill Paxton as the coward is excellent, livening things up a bit.
This movie is in a different category than Alien, the first movie, but as itself it is still great entertainment.

Walter Hill's updated (1984), highly stylized take on biker movies still looks like a determinedly eccentric project that happens to work at times, but not at others. Michael Paré plays a biker who agrees to rescue his ex-girlfriend (a rocker played by Diane Lane) from kidnappers (led by Willem Dafoe). The ensuing battle against a nocturnal background of industrial blight, chrome, and loud music is like some fever dream of a Springsteen fan who listened to the song "Born to Run" far too often. The audacity of the film carries it a long way even after it becomes clear that Hill's experiment is crumbling under its own weight. Dafoe, who looked even spookier back then than he does now, is memorable, as are Amy Madigan and Rick Moranis. Music is by Ry Cooder, with an appearance by the Blasters. The DVD release has a widescreen presentation, optional French soundtrack, optional Spanish subtitles. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Streets of Fire Diane Lan .......2007-06-11
Amid a brooding rock & roll landscape, the Bombers motorcycle gang, led by the vicious Raven Shaddock (Willem Dafoe),kidnap diva Ellen Aim (Diane Lane). Her hope for rescue lies with unlikely heroes: soldier of fortune Tom Cody (Michael Pare) and his sidekick, the two-fisted beer-guzzling, McCoy (Amy Madigan). Joined by Ellen's manager,Billy Fish (Rick Moranis),the trio plunge headfirst into a world of rain-splattered streets, hot cars and deadly assassins.
Excellent Diane Lane as Ellen Aim - Top Movie
Streets of Fire is a rock & roll shotgun blast to the senses.
I love this movie, the sets are fantastic, the dialogue is deadpan. .......2007-05-07
This is one of the classic B movies of all time.
Really enjoyed Streets of Fire.......2007-03-27
This movie is great. This movie has a "dark" feeling to it. It reminds me of the "50's". It has a great deal of motorcycle stunts, and the music is very good. Again the music reminds me of the "50's also. The movie is not a real serious movie. It is sort of a tongue in cheek movie.
Michael Pare, Diane Lane, and Amy Madigan are good in it.
An all time great movie.......2007-03-21
Maybe it's a bit of a cult movie, but I never get sick of it! I love the music, the characters, the lines, it will be one to watch with my grandkids!
A GREAT ROCK AND ROLL FABLE IN THE 50's MOLD.......2007-03-20
This is a great film for any pure rock and roll fan. It's timeless with good acting. It's a good escape film.

Yes, that is Bill Paxton as Ilan Mitchell-Smith's militaristic big brother. And that's Robert Downey Jr. as one of the in-crowd jerks who makes nerds Mitchell-Smith and Hall's lives miserable. Fortunately, this is a John Hughes comedy and our smart nerds create the perfect woman, Lisa (Kelly LeBrock), using a computer and voodoo. Lisa is a willing sex toy, has magical powers, and just wants to help the boys get even and meet nice babes. She even cleans up. The fantasy ebullience of Hughes is given full rein here and that's good and bad (mostly good). It's all aimed at a certain kind of hormone-addled, 16-year-old sensibility; but who doesn't have a little bit of that in them? --Keith Simanton

I wish I could love this like others do..........2007-06-12
Weird Science has a funny high-concept premise and an endearing cast, but even when I was a teen and the movie was brand new, I thought the humor was messy and heavy-handed. I never understood how so many of my contemporaries consider this a "classic", especially when stacked up against Revenge of the Nerds, Real Genius, Better Off Dead, or even Hughes' masterful 16 Candles or Ferris Bueller. Still, the movie is not without a certain odd charm and there are some great moments (mainly involving Bill Paxton); I find myself wishing Amazon would let me give it an extra half star!
2 kids made a woman.......2007-06-10
These kids are nerds too, they want to party a fall in love.
Weird Science.......2007-05-24
Great 80's Classic. I would put it in the top 10 80's definitively 80's movies list.
One of my all time favorites.......2007-05-18
TOTALLY worth owning. Kids loved this throwback just as much as they liked Shrek. My boy couldn't stop laughing when the last part came on when Chet was turned into a giant fly-eating turd.
a 1980's classic.......2007-05-13
It's a great movie! If you enjoy silly goofball comedies, I think this is the one for. Its extremly funny and you will see a young Anthony Michael Hall, the lovely Kelly Lebrock and a movie with some unforgettable scenes. Especially, the one where Gary(Anthony Michael Hall)and Wyatt(IIan Mitchell Smith) are in the bathroom disgusting their party, its hillarious. Enjoy Weird Science (high School Reunion Collection)

The word "vampire" is never mentioned in <I>Near Dark</I>, but that doesn't stop this 1987 cult favorite from being one of the best modern-era vampire films. It put then-unknown director Kathryn Bigelow on Hollywood's radar and gave choice roles to <I>Aliens</I> costars favored by Bigelow's ex-husband James Cameron: Lance Henriksen is the leader of a makeshift family of renegade bloodsuckers, nocturnally seeking victims in rural Oklahoma; his immortal gal pal is <I>Aliens</I> and <I>Terminator 2</I> alumnus Jenette Goldstein; and Bill Paxton is the group's deadliest leather-clad ass kicker. Fellow traveler Jenny Wright lures Okie farm boy Adrian Pasdar into the group with a love bite, and he's soon turning toward vampirism with a combination of frightened revulsion and relentless desire. With Joshua Miller (<I>River's Edge</I>) as the youngest vampire, <I>Near Dark</I> is Bigelow's masterpiece of low-budget ingenuity--a truck-stop thriller that begins well, gets better and better (aided by a fine Tangerine Dream score), and goes out in a blaze of glory. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Gritty, Haunting & Eerily Sublime ..........2007-06-23
Near Dark is a vampire film with a look and feel unlike your typical fang-fest: daylight is harsh and painful, while the quicksand-lull of shadows by night are at once sharp and surreal, altering the landscape and ensnaring the viewer unawares.
Co-written by Eric Red (writer of the original "The Hitcher") and Kathryn Bigelow (director of "Strange Days"), this film is a taut, smart and surly Western Vampire flick that still stands up to - and surpasses - today's standards of chop and spray film-making (thank goodness). This was a film with a vision, evolving out of the mid-80s when film-makers were still taking chances and the genres of old were a-changing. These are no walking corpses in molding black capes, hiding in coffins and dodging wooden stakes. These vampires mean business and the landscape in which they travel is as cruel and as unrelenting and as personable as are they.
Charactor development, the look and feel of the piece, plot, and snappy dialogue are those things that matter in Near Dark. If you're going to make a horror film, by god, make the thing. And the cast/crew/creators of Near Dark did just that.
I was a pre-teen when I first saw Near Dark, back in the late 80s. No movie before or since has left me with such an eerie memory of intensity, pain, and ... strangely enough given the subject matter ... a giddy sort of hope. As a kid the infamous "bar scene" nearly did me in, and provided fodder for nightmares this fearless horror-film watcher didn't think were possible. For years, just remembering that scene, was enough to keep me passing it by in the rental aisles.
But, being the admirer I am of many of the central cast in Near Dark, I couldn't stay away for long, and so I rewatched it with adult eyes. It was even better than I'd remembered it. I'm not ashamed to say I had to buy my own copy, which I watch every couple of months.
There is the naive and flirtacious Caleb Colten, perfectly cast in Adrian Pasdar (who plays the polar opposite in the deliciously wicked "Jim Profit" in the tv show "Profit", also now available on dvd) who meets the at once simple
There vampire's.......2007-05-20
Only Calab doesn't know that. He is thinking with his heart, not his brain.
Be Bitter if this movie was before your time.......2007-05-02
Certain vampire movie franchises which I shall not name are as so many other media products all about selling lipstick and lisp in these shallow shallow days.
This movie has so much style and probably was made for very little money.
Jenny Wright and Adrian Pasdar heat up the screen.......2007-02-28
Put simply, this is the most sensual portrayal of the vampire myth in recent cinematic history, and it does a neat turnaround of the roles, since most renditions have a sweet, innocent young woman seduced by a dark, handsome bloodsucker.
Instead, Jenny Wright is the ethereally beautiful, seductive, mysterious stranger who initiates Adrian Pasdar (as farm boy Caleb Colton, whose openly displayed lust is kind of amusing for a minute there) into the mysteries of her night-focused world. Watch her during the scenes in which she bites Caleb -- and later, kills for him. Jenny Wright certainly never reached the caliber of Meryl Streep during her short career, but she COULD act. Her performance as Mae in "Near Dark" was chilling -- and admirable.
Caleb is on a sort of probationary vampire status, and he finds it impossible to kill (which is a requirement, since according to Mae, "The night has its price.") And yes, the end is probably not what the readers of Fangoria would have preferred, although they probably would've bailed on this anyway once they learned the only real gore was in the bar room scene.
Terrific supporting cast, especially Bill Paxton, who stole every scene he was in. But the scenes with just Wright and Pasdar -- oooh. Powerful, sexy, and unforgettable. Not to be missed.
A Terribly Underated Vampire Film..........2007-01-26
I first watched this film when I was younger, but since then I have loved this film and consider it definitely one of those films that should be much more popular than they are. Most people I know don't even know it, although they claim they have a good knowledge of horror films. I always recommend it, but at least where I live the video stores don't even have it.
Anyway though this movie does go above so many other vampire films made today. It definitely gives its own unique view on vampires. I was a huge fan of Anne Rice's romantic, suffering vampires but watching this film where instead the vampires are dusty and completely cruel to their victims without any air of sophistication gave it a much more real and frightening view on such creatures.
The cast carry out their parts well, but its truly Paxton that steals the show. He is the most cruel of them all, and the loudest. Right away he just steals the show. The others kind of fade compared to him, but quiet Mae, the complete opposite of Severen, holds her own candle on the show. And yes, you do root for her and Caleb, who is roped into being a vampire thanks to her seduction.
A dark, harsh and powerful movie about vampires that matches to the maturity of Interview with the Vampire, yet with a complete new view on their lifestyle. I highly recommend it if you can find it.
