If some younger viewers (or less attentive older ones) will wish for a diagram to sort out the players, Miyazaki's atmospheric world and its lush visual design are reasons enough to watch. For the English-language version, Miramax assembled an impressive vocal cast including Gillian Anderson, Billy Crudup (as Ashitaka), Claire Danes (as San), Minnie Driver (as Lady Eboshi), Billy Bob Thornton, and Jada Pinkett Smith. The Princess Mononoke is a contemporary fable, an outstanding story, a vibrant and emotive warning for us, the human beings, but besides, iot's an invitation and (if I may)a smart returm to the roots of myth and the encounter with the Geeat Spirit of the Forest, wolves and characters that have aprofound specific weight and transcendence into we denominate the primordial essence of the nature's scream.

Far beyond its relevant significance, there is a lot of significative issues that you should take into account, because the kinetic script involves you from start to finish.

Don't overlook this picture, beacuse it's much more mature than many pretended films for adults.

Fabulous is the word to qualify this extraordinary novie. Don't miss it!

One of the best movies ever made.......2007-05-31

It's an allegory about the moment when Humankind stopped living with the Natural and Spirit worlds, and sought to master them. Man's need for Nature, BTW, was also a major theme of Miyazaki Hayao's earlier classic "My Neighbor Tottoro". The English dub is okay, but do yourself a favor and listen to the Japanese Audio with the subtitles "on". Don't be put off by the "Anime" tag. This isn't about transforming superheroes or kiddy card games. It's a heart-felt epic, and you'll forget you're watching animation within a few minutes of hitting "play". If at least one Miyazaki film isn't on your list of "Best Movies-Ever", then truly you are missing out.

Argueably the best anime I've ever seen........2007-05-23

I am a huge fan of anime. I have watched everything from Naruto (unfortunately) to Bleach (highly recommended) but this anime movie is the best I have ever seen. It is a good watch for anyone, even those who simply think of anime as simply a "cartoon." The characters are incredibly deep and the usual sense of right and wrong is blurred creating for an incredibly interesting ride. I highly recommend this film to everyone. Hope you enjoy!

Must See.......2007-05-14

My family LOVES this movie. It is "One of Roger Ebert's top 10" for a reason. The cast is great, the story is moving and the animation is breathtaking. The really cool thing about this DVD is you can watch it in English or in Japanese with English subtitles.

If you can give The Astronaut Farmer the big, bounding leap of faith it requires, you'll probably enjoy this good-natured film about the importance of holding on to your dreams. The title character (and the dreamer in question) is Charlie Farmer (Billy Bob Thornton), a Texas ranch owner and former aeronautics engineer who's got a homemade rocket in his barn and a dream to blast into space. Even though Charlie's deeply in debt and threatened with foreclosure, his wife (Virginia Madsen) and kids are deeply supportive of Charlie's Earth-orbit mission, even when he attracts the glaring attention of a seasoned Air Force colonel (played by Bruce Willis, in an uncredited role), the FAA, the FBI, and the national media. "If we don't have our dreams, we have nothing," says Charlie at a particularly desperate impasse, and this loopy, offbeat, and unabashedly sentimental drama embraces that message with disarming sincerity.

Suspension of disbelief is a challenge when the movie glosses over so many of its logistical details (like, where does one buy an old NASA space capsule?), and in trying for a kind of Capra-esque, eccentrically Western spin on the American dream, the Polish twins--director Michael and cowriter/actor Mark (making their mainstream debut after such indie hits as Twin Falls, Idaho and Northfork)--are only marginally successful in making Charlie's ambition genuinely believable. The film works much better as a kind of post space-age fable for families, and it's just involving enough to make its climax emotionally rewarding, mostly because Thornton, Madsen, and their costars (including Bruce Dern and Tim Blake Nelson) handle the delicate material with the earnestness it needs to be marginally convincing. Elton John's "Rocket Man" is predictably heard over the closing credits (accordingly, Charlie's launch-time is "zero hours, nine a.m."), and at a time when several adventurous entrepreneurs (including Amazon.com founder Jeff Bezos) are gradually developing a civilian space-flight industry, The Astronaut Farmer is an admirable yet forgivably flawed reminder that we should never stop reaching for the stars. --Jeff Shannon

Real? Or Not?.......2007-06-19

Stewardess told me this was a true story and it's only now, several days later, that I begin to think she might have been pulling my leg. I guess that's a tribute to the way the movie sort of makes you believe. Charles Farmer might be a real guy, but if so, he had the kind of dream you just don't find anywhere else but in Hollywood movies. This is a quasi-"indie" sort of mood picture from the Polish brothers (who show up as government agents halfway through the film), and it uses mostly actors you recall from various indie pictures over the years. For me, the highlight was seeing yet another grand old "old man" performance by the underrated Bruce Dern, whose new memoir I reviewed recently. Dern doesn't have to say a word (in fact most of the time he just shows his face, with Einstein hair exploding from his skull, so at first he looks like Christopher Lloyd from the BACK TO THE FUTURE movies). Indeed BACK TO THE FUTURE now that I think of it must have as much of a "real science" basis as THE ASTRONAUT FARMER and was likely a direct influence on it. Anyway Dern has only one scene where he does any talking at all, and yet, his quiet and heroic individuality dominate every scene of the picture.

Virginia Madsen might be asking her agent, "Why did you let me do this?" and yet at the end of the day I expect she will be glad she has this film to look back on. The two twin brothers who wrote and directed this film must have been in love with her. I have never seen her photographed looking so gorgeous, young, or sexy, even when she was a starlet 25 years ago. She is incredible here and by the way, she's what gives the movie its reality quotient, not white-lipped, white-haired Billy Bob Thornton.

I kept wishing the rocket would somehow strand the two little girls out in space or something. They were annoying plus. Take them out of school? Leave them in school? I just couldn't get interested. But I'm sure that they are fine little girls in real life and girls, if you're reading this, remember, it wasn't your fault, and better parts will come your way and there's always the Olsen twins to emulate.

A movie for dreamers.......2007-06-11

This movie is perfect, I could not have been more moved by the story and Billy-Bob Thorntons acting. When you walk into a movie, whether its based on a true story or not, you either "buy into it" or you dont. Like "The Man From Snowy River", its not a real story but an incredibe and wonderful adventure.

If you are a dreamer I believe this movie will touch you deeply. When one "dreams" he/she is essentially believing that something wonderful is possible, against all odds, and if you want to realize that dream you must hold on even when everyone loses faith. All of the emotional highs and lows of that experience are captured beautifully in this movie.

This movie is in my top 10 favorites of all time. Dare to dream!

Reach the stars and your dreams.......2007-05-29

Once again we come across another inspirational film to tell us that dreams do come true. The road to success is a difficult one--you might be the only one seeing it. The Astronaut Farmer is an uplifting, but formulistic film about a man who fought against all odds to follow the path to redemption--yes, we have seen it before, but it doesn't hurt to experience it again.

Story:
Texan farmer and ex astronaut-in-training Charles Farmer (Billy Bob Thornton) has a particular dream; he wants to go to space. In order to accomplish that, he builds a rocket--with a bunch of leftovers from a military junkyard--right in his barn. He is smart and has a strong engineering background to complete this peculiar, but dangerous project. His family and many of his friends support his goal, but unfortunately he is broke--the bank is about to take his property. Not only that, the government has found out about his "project" and will try to stop it. Will he ever launch his rocket?

Review:
The Astronaut Farmer brings back the same "feel good" formula of previous films like The World's Fastest Indian and The Pursuit of Happyness, where our main characters have one thing in common; they all want their dreams come true at any cost. In this film we see a supportive family--his wife and three kids--who stick with Farmer during the good times and bad. In a way, the rocket is what unites his family. They have no money--probably spent on the rocket--but he makes his family part of his dream by letting them participate in his project. Working on the rocket becomes a family tradition.

I'm not a big fan of Billy Bob Thornton--the memories of Bad Santa and The Alamo are still fresh on my mind--but in this movie, he gives us a decent performance. He is a likable family man. His "follow your dream" cliché speech is not as uplifting as other similar films, but it gets the job done.

The Astronaut Farmer was craftily shot. The special effects are about average, but create the desired effect--and some funny moments. It's not jaw-dropping a la Apollo 13 and it doesn't want to be.

Unfortunately, not everything in The Astronaut Farmer is "inspirational." Low points of the film are the tiresome topic, soapy feeling and long draggy parts. The notion of somebody building a rocket in his farm--by himself and with almost no budget--to go to outer space is a bit far-fetched. Also some of the humor feels force and unnecessary, especially the "it's so huge" comments by a local girl.

The Verdict:
"Been there done that" is what people are going to say when they get out of the theater. The Astronaut Farmer is another film that gives us hope--once again--to go ahead and build a rocket to reach our dreams. It has its flaws, but it's a good "feel good" family film nevertheless.

Great FICTIONAL movie!.......2007-05-21

This movie was fantastic. I think what a lot of people are missing is that some movies, while not actually plausible, are meant to entertain. This is a work of fiction; it should be taken as such. As a result, it's a feel good movie with fantastic imagery that you can't help but love, so long as you take your "impossible" disposition out of the equation.

Barn Burner.......2007-05-21

A man wearing a spacesuit rides horseback across the sand dunes of a barren desert. He moves right-to-left, which spells trouble in movies' silent language. There, he finds a calf that has strayed from its mother, lying in the sand. With a firm but gentle hand, he returns the lost beast to the herd.

It's a scene whose incongruous visual elements reminded me of the 1968 sci-fi thriller Planet of the Apes. But this isn't some spaceman marooned in a strange place; it's the movie's earthbound hero, a Texan named Charles Farmer (Billy Bob Thornton). A graduate of the University of Texas aerospace engineering program and one-time member of NASA's astronaut program, Charlie left the space agency decades ago to run the family ranch after his father's untimely death. Yet, through all the years of operating the ranch and raising his own family, he hasn't let go of his dream of defying gravity.

In his barn, Charlie works obsessively, day and night, to build a rocket that may help him realize his dream. He models it after 1950s-era Atlas missiles, using salvage parts he buys on the cheap from rocket graveyards. His supportive wife, Audie (Virginia Madsen, enjoying a rewarding second wind onscreen), and their three kids get caught up in the daily up-and-down drama of his quest; indeed, his first-born, son Shepard (Max Thieriot), was named in honor of the first American in space, Alan Shepard.

However, their neighbors in the farm community regard Charlie as the town oddball, a frustrated man going through a bizarre mid-life crisis. There's even an ongoing bet among the locals as to whether he "will ever go up, or blow up." When he attends show-and-tell at his daughter's elementary school in his spacesuit, her teacher humors him: to spur the kids' imaginations, "we need more parents willing to dress up." Foremost among Charlie's woes: to finance his idea, he's gone into hock for over a half-million dollars to the local bank, and they're about to foreclose on his ranch for delinquent payments.

What I like about Thornton's portrayal is that it actually justifies the townsfolk in pigeonholing him as a square peg. A quixotic figure with a bit of a mean streak (when he receives a foreclosure letter, he throws a brick through the banker's plate-glass window), he reminds me a little of Anthony Hopkins's quirky Burt Munro in The World's Fastest Indian. But, when push comes to shove, Thornton recalls Burt Lancaster in so many of his tough-guy Western roles.

When Charlie forwards his flight plan to the FAA in anticipation of his expected launch, government officials dismiss him as a crank. But when he attempts to purchase high-grade liquid rocket fuel, he opens a can of alphabet soup: the FBI, CIA, FAA, NASA, and a host of other agencies descend upon his ranch to stop him. Even the local Child Protective Services closes in when Charlie decides to home-school his kids and draft them into his "space program." In typical bureaucratic fashion, the CPS agent diagnoses the children, long-distance, as "brainwashed and violated," and threatens his wife: "It's about time you take charge of your family before someone else does it for you."

A visit to his lawyer makes Charlie more aware of the pressure the government intends to apply. "With the Patriot Act," the attorney tells him, "they can do whatever they want if they think it's a threat to homeland security." He advises Charlie to "embrace the media, invite them in for your protection." Next, an astronaut from the old days (Bruce Willis, in an uncredited role) shows up to try to talk his eccentric friend out of his scheme. "They don't let civilians into outer space, they let astronauts into outer space," he says. We then learn that he's been sent at NASA's behest, because if successful, Charlie's shoestring-budget launch could embarrass the space agency, which needs to defend its multi-billion-dollar budgets.

Eventually, Charlie defends himself before a meeting of federal officials in words that express the aspirations of the lone creator against the regulatory state and the pessimistic mindset:

It's not your right to tell me whether or not I can launch into space.... I know we have laws; we've got all kind of laws. We've got more laws that tell us what we can't do than anything else.... You see, when I was a kid they used to tell me that I could be anything I wanted to be. No matter what. And, maybe I am insane, I don't know, but I still believe that. I believe with all my heart. Somewhere along the line, we stopped believing that we could do anything, and if we don't have our dreams, we have nothing.

Soon after, in a fit of desperation, he launches his rocket, using an unstable kerosene-based fuel mix. It leads to disastrous consequences, but...

Well, I don't want to give away the ending. Let's just say that The Astronaut Farmer isn't just a "feel-good movie"; it's a preposterously "feel-good movie." Its plot has to be taken with a grain of salt, but then, so does movie popcorn. I don't go to the movies to bask in the mundane or to nitpick at continuity errors; I go to be entertained, perhaps even enlightened. And the Polish brothers tell a highly entertaining and sometimes thought-provoking tall tale.

In a way, I found The Astronaut Farmer almost as predictable as Pan's Labyrinth, also reviewed in this issue. However, it's one of those unbelievable flicks that you can truly believe in, because its creators take the preposterous seriously. That, and an expertly suspenseful buildup, makes all the difference. Somehow, they were able to take the plot of the forgotten Andy Griffith 1979 TV movie Salvage One, seize the theme of Francis Ford Coppola's Tucker: The Man and His Dream, mix in cinematic references to John Ford Westerns and Apollo 13,and yet make it all jell. The movie's only real drawback is an undistinguished soundtrack.

Credible acting enhances the story's credibility. Billy Bob Thornton brings to the role of Charlie his quiet, idiosyncratic, yet steadfast demeanor. For her part, Virginia Madsen exudes a natural warmth and unflagging conviction. The supporting actors are well-cast, too, including sisters Jasper and Logan Polish as Charlie and Audie's daughters; Bruce Dern as Audie's cantankerous, aging father; and J.K. Simmons as the gruff FAA official who keeps setting up bureaucratic roadblocks in Charlie's path.

What I most enjoyed, however, is that The Astronaut Farmer is a great family movie, as entertaining for the kids as it is for their parents. One of my earliest childhood memories is from late one night in July 1969, when I was four years old. My father woke me up and took me to the living room television set to watch Neil Armstrong walk on the moon. Lately, I've been thinking that perhaps I'll never get to share a moment like that with my own son, who will soon turn two--that in his lifetime, man may never again set foot on the moon, let alone walk on Mars.

After watching Billy Bob Thornton's unwavering, "can-do" performance for almost two hours, however, those dim prospects somehow seem to grow a little brighter.

This Western has become a modest cult favorite since its release in 1993, when the film was met with mixed reviews but the performances of Kurt Russell (as Wyatt Earp) and especially Val Kilmer, for his memorably eccentric performance as the dying gunslinger Doc Holliday, garnered high praise. The movie opens with Wyatt Earp trying to put his violent past behind him, living happily in Tombstone with his brothers and the woman (Dana Delany) who puts his soul at ease. But a murderous gang called the Cowboys has burst on the scene, and Earp can't keep his gun belt off any longer. The plot sounds routine, and in many ways it is, but Western buffs won't mind a bit thanks to a fine cast and some well-handled action on the part of Rambo director George P. Cosmatos, who has yet to make a better film than this. --Jeff Shannon

This movie is very close to the actual circumstances of the OK Corral. Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliot (who is so perfect in westerns it makes you wonder if he was time shifted from 1880!!), and Bill Paxton are great! Then you see some of the actors from classic western movies and TV back as older men. Another one that we have memorized the lines to and still have to watch it each time it is on the satellite!! If you've never seen it....buy it, pop some popcorn, pour some butter on it and turn on the home theater!!

Phenomenal.......2007-06-05

This movie is absolutely awesome. Sure, that sounds like a young awe struck boy in its description of the film, but that is what it reduced me to. Some of the best one-liners of all-time, and a great chemistry between the always solid Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer. Kilmer is at his best as the Consumption addled (read TB) Doc Holliday. This is a novie that I have never heard a bad thing about, even though the discussions almost always involve guys. Really a fun and well-made film. One of the few movies that I can watch time and time again. A 5 star classic. Enjoy!!!

A gorgeous example of western nobility and honor..........2007-05-24

"Tombstone" is a classic American film of honor and nobility. In a time when villains openly used force, true heroes stood up to these men not because they were tough guys, but because they knew they were right. It provides a fine example of how cowards and bullies rely on fear and intimidation to gain their power, and how one needs only be strong to stand up to them.

Kurt Russell plays one of the most conflicted, yet noble characters with gravitas and strength. Val Kilmer as "Doc Holliday" steals the show as the southern gentleman with an unfortunate affliction and deadly vices. The Villains, led by Powers Booth as Curly Bill, are fantastic and able acting foils to the protagonists. The entire cast is strong and the script is outstanding.

This movie should be a standard for every young man on the nobility in honor, the value of intelligence and education, and the merits of being a gentleman.

There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid- fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving. Bay's protagonists--the eight crude, lewd, oversexed (but lovable, of course) oil drillers summoned to save the world from a Texas-sized meteor hurling toward the earth--are not flawless heroes, but common men with whom all can relate. In this huge Western-in-space soap opera, they're American cowboys turned astronauts. Sci-fi buffs will appreciate Bay's fetishizing of technology, even though it's apparent he doesn't understand it as anything more than flashing lights and shiny gadgets. Smartly, the duo also tries to lure the art-house crowd, raiding the local indie acting stable and populating the film with guys like Steve Buscemi, Billy Bob Thornton, Owen Wilson, and Michael Duncan, all adding needed touches of humor and charisma. When Bay applies his sledgehammer aesthetics to the action portions of the film, it's mindless fun; it's only when Armageddon tackles humanity that it becomes truly offensive. Not since Mississippi Burning have racial and cultural stereotypes been substituted for characters so blatantly--African Americans, Japanese, Chinese, Scottish, Samoans, Muslims, French ... if it's not white and American, Bay simplifies it. Or, make that white male America; the film features only three notable females--four if you count the meteor, who's constantly referred to as a "bitch that needs drillin'," but she's a hell of a lot more developed and unpredictable than the other women characters combined. Sure, Bay's film creates some tension and contains some visceral moments, but if he can't create any redeemable characters outside of those in space, what's the point of saving the planet? --Dave McCoy

This action-packed, fast paced, movie has it all and it keeps your attention as well. People need to understand that Hollywood makes millions of dollars with this particular style of film, and who is to blame them. If something gives you a positive outcome, then it would be foolish not to attempt it again. I also understand that there are those movies that are on a category of their own and that break the boundaries of a typical Hollywood movie. But, Armaggedon serves its main purpose. It keeps you entertained and it has all the elements that make an action movie great. Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer are a lethal combination when it comes to this particular genre of movies, and I feel that is an honest compliment to admit that they are two of the best out there. Job well done!

I don't understand it when people say that this movie is not realistic, it never claims to be! It is a fun ride with with a great sound track and cast. I don't want this type of movie to be realistic, it would be too boring! This was the biggest hit of the year it was released for good reason......IT'S ENTERTAINING!!!!! That is what a movie should be! I watch a movie to escape and be swooped away from reality and that is what Armageddon does very well. If you can't just sit back and enjoy this movie with some popcorn and a soda than I feel sorry for you. Life is too short to not enjoy a great flick like Armageddon! I can't wait until it comes out in HD! Now go put the DVD in the player and hang on! :-)

The perfect movie for stupid people!.......2007-05-30

Armageddon ranks up there with one of the absolute worst movies I've had the misfortune of seeing. It gives new meaning to the phrase 'over the top'. (Bigger is not better). Why is it that Hollywood insists on giving 99% of the attention to ridiculous special fx and 1% to the script/writing? Mega budget blockbusters like Armageddon are the most guilty of misappropriation of resources. Somebody please make Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer stop ...

Totally Awesome!.......2007-06-19

If you are a real free thinker than this movie is for you. If you need to have everything scripted and compartmentalized than this movie is not for you. The story line and soundtrack are a perfect marriage. Watch this movie when you are not distracted and can concentrate on the subtle dialogue ... Some pretty cool stuff here. Great characters. This film plays itself out like a hazy dream. Not everybody's cup of team, but it sure is mine. I can't think of another film that approaches this dream state.

Johnny Depp. I have never been disappointed by Johnny Depp on the screen. Not an action packed thriller, but if you don't "PAUSE" before leaving the room and don't rewind you'll miss something.

I also think that Amazon should be ashamed of allowing their reviewer to give such a negative review. I can see if the guy had given an abundance of details to support the reasons why he hated the film so much, but to rattle off a couple of generalities about "Dead Man" is atrocious of him.

I loved "Dead Man." I just saw "Pirates of the Carribean 2," and I'm glad that great actors like Johnny Depp are allowed to flex their creative muscle in real roles instead of cookie-cutter Hollywood roles. I do admit to anyone interested in viewing "Dead Man" that so far, the majority of people I attempted to introudce the film to did not like it. This movie is made for a very particular audience, and I'm not sure if even the director can pin-point exactly who this audience is.

I loved everything about this movie, even the black & white, and I normally hate black & white movies. But "Dead Man" in color would have killed so much of the effect. I loved the characters, like Nobody, and the ruthless bounty hunters. Johnny Depp plays one of the most tragic individuals introduced to audiences in a long time.

This movie could not have been better. I consider it to be a masterpiece of art.

I just finished watching this movie again and was really surprised to see the negative review given by Tom Keogh of Amazon (whoever he is). If Tom can only describe the superficial events of the story without recognizing the broader themes, then he is really missing out. I am always amazed at how much storytelling punch Jim Jarmusch manages to pack into so few scenes- minimalism at its best. He encapsulates the human experience in just a few short strokes- the innocence of the young as they make their way out into the world, taking the first long journey alone, seeing new & strange lands/people, encountering the decadence of the city, treachery in big business, enduring ridicule, sharing fragile dreams with another and seeing those dreams slip away. In the end, William Blake is transformed from innocence to maturity and understands the necessity and tragedy of it. Chances are pretty good that Tom Keogh did not understand that the dead baby deer was a symbol of William Blake's lost innocence; much less some of the other metaphors presented here. A great, great movie.

Robert Duval, the cast, and crew all do a great job and make The Apostile the best of the flawed preacher films. Robert Duvals Apostile E,F. is realer and more beleavable than Burt Lancasters Elmer Gantry. I like this style of peaching better than the cold stoic kind.

Psychopathy in Action.......2007-05-08

I don't think I've ever seen a clearer portrayal of the charismatic psychopath than Robert Duvall playing the part of Euliss "Sonny" Dewey. Do not think that psychopaths are mad-dog killers - only very few are and they could be considered "unsuccessful" psychopaths.

Some people think that psychopathy is the result of some attachment or bonding difficulty as an infant but psychopathy expert, Dr. Robert Hare, has turned the idea around. After all his years digging into the background of psychopaths. He says:

"In some children the very failure to bond is a symptom of psychopathy. It is likely that these children lack the capacity to bond readily, and that their lack of attachment is largely the result, not the cause, of psychopathy." Without Conscience: The Disturbing World of the Psychopaths Among Us

In other words: they are born that way and you can't fix them.

The differences in how psychopathy manifests does have to do with family background, however. How one is raised determines how the psychopath expresses himself in life.

A psychopath who grows up in a stable family and has access to positive social and educational resources might become a white-collar criminal, or perhaps a somewhat shady entrepreneur, preacher, politician, lawyer, judge, or other professional. Another individual with the same traits, and a deprived background might become a common con-artist, a drifter, mercenary, or violent criminal.

A psychopath born into a very religious background, having the early experiences with evangelism that are depicted in the movie, would very likely grow up to be exactly as Sonny is portrayed.

The point is, social factors and parenting practices only shape the expression of the disorder, but have no effect on the individual's inability to feel empathy or to develop a conscience.

As psychologist Martha StoutThe Sociopath Next Door has pointed out so eloquently, psychopaths seem to be born without a conscience. Conscience seems to depend on the ability to imagine consequences. But most "consequences" relate to pain in some way, and psychopaths really don't understand pain in the emotional sense. They understand frustration of not getting what they want, and to them, that is pain. But the fact seems to be that they act based solely on a sort of Game Theory evaluation of a situation: what will they get out of it, and what will it cost? And these "costs" do not seem to factor in being humiliated, causing pain to others, sabotaging the future, or any of the other possibilities that normal people consider when making a choice.

All of these issues are depicted in this movie: Sonny is traveling most of the time and often cheats on his wife, but considers himself to be basically a "good guy." His mother falls on the floor in a weak spell and he just walks out the door and says he'll see her in a few weeks. His barely controlled aggression against his wife when he discovers that she is cheating while he's on the road (also cheating, as he admits), and later when they discuss the break-up of their marriage, finally culminating in a violent break-out where he scares the bejeebies out of everybody by going berserk at a kid's softball game, inflicting a fatal injury on his wife's boyfriend, are all clues to the seething selfishness that drives Sonny.

Sonny also exhibits what psychopaths DO have that is truly outstanding: an ability to give their undivided attention to something that interests them intensely right now or in terms of setting up a situation where they have power and authority over others. Some clinicians have compared this to the concentration with which a predator stalks his prey. This quality is abundantly evident in Sonny's drive to preach, to "have a church," and the work he is willing to put into acquiring that status.

The qualities of the psychopath are also on display in Sonny's talents as a preacher with a mastery of hypnotic techniques. Psychopaths are naturally interesting as all get out - even exciting! They exude a captivating energy that keeps their listeners on the edge of their seats (and they talk a LOT!). Even if some part of the normal person is shocked or repelled by what the psychopath says or does, they are like the mouse hypnotized by the torturing cat. Even if they have the chance to run away, they don't. This is evident in the movie in Toosie's fascination for Sonny even though she is also repelled by him.

Many Psychopaths "make their living" by using charm, deceit, and manipulation to gain the confidence of their victims. You see that clearly when Sonny travels to Bayou Boutte and tells an out and out lie to Rev. Blackwell that "God sent me to fellowship with you." The viewer knows that he learned about Rev. Blackwell from his cousin whom Sonny met while on the run from his criminally violent behavior. In fact, this scene is the dead giveaway that we are watching a psychopath in action. With all his praying, self-baptizing, Bible reading and thumping, and assorted other self-righteous activities, Sonny sits there and tells a bald-faced lie to another minister and ascribes it to God. (Well, he probably convinced him that it WAS God, that this was how God directed him, but that's really stretching it.)

The fact is, many psychopaths can be found in white collar professions where they are aided in their evil by the fact that most people expect certain classes of people to be trustworthy because of their social or professional credentials. Preachers, lawyers, doctors, teachers, politicians, psychiatrists and psychologists, generally do not have to earn our trust because they have it by virtue of their positions. But the fact is: psychopaths are found in such lofty spheres also, and more often than most people suppose!

At the same time, psychopaths are good imposters. They have absolutely no hesitation about forging and brazenly using impressive credentials to adopt professional roles that bring prestige and power. They pick professions in which the requisite skills are easy to fake, the jargon is easy to learn, and the credentials are unlikely to be thoroughly checked. Psychopaths find it extremely easy to pose as financial consultants, ministers, psychological counselors and psychologists. It may even be due to the fact that the science of psychology is infested with psychopaths that truly helpful research on psychopathy is never funded despite the fact that psychopaths cause more damage to society than any other psychological problem. This film is an example of that very sort of damage. Multiplied millions of U.S. citizens are subjected to this kind of hypnosis/evangelism which twists and warps their minds.

Another clue to the reality of Sonny Dewey is that psychopaths make their way by conning people into doing things for them; obtaining money for them, prestige, power, or even standing up for them when others try to expose them. That's what they do and they do it very well as Sonny demonstrates with just about everyone he comes in contact with. What's more, the job is very easy because most people are gullible with an unshakable belief in the inherent goodness of man.

Manipulation is the key to the psychopath's conquests. They will feign false emotions to create empathy, and many of them study the tricks that can be employed by the empathy technique. Psychopaths are often able to incite pity from people because they seem like "lost souls" as Guggenbuhl-Craig writes. So the pity factor is one reason why victims often fall for these "poor" people.

Hare cites a famous case where a psychopath was "Man of the Year" and president of the Chamber of Commerce in his small town. (Remember that John Wayne Gacy was running for Jaycee President at the very time of his first murder conviction!) The man in question had claimed to have a Ph.D. from Berkeley. He ran for a position on the school board which he then planned to parlay into a position on the county commission which paid more.

At some point, a local reporter suddenly had the idea to check up on the guy - to see if his credentials were real. What the reporter found out was that the only thing that was true about this up and coming politician's "faked bio" was the place and date of birth. Everything else was fictitious. Not only was the man a complete impostor, he had a long history of antisocial behavior, fraud, impersonation, and imprisonment. His only contact with a university was a series of extension courses by mail that he took while in Leavenworth Federal Penitentiary. What is even more amazing is the fact that before he was a con-man, he was a "con-boy." For two decades he had dodged his way across America one step ahead of those he had hoodwinked. Along the way he had married three women and had four children, and he didn't even know what had happened to them.

When he was exposed, he was completely unconcerned. "These trusting people will stand behind me. A good liar is a good judge of people," he said. Amazingly, he was right. Far from being outraged at the fact that they had all been completely deceived and lied to from top to bottom, the local community he had conned so completely to accrue benefits and honors to himself that he had not earned, rushed to his support!

And it wasn't just "token support." The local Republican party chairman wrote about him: "I assess his genuineness, integrity, and devotion to duty to rank right alongside of President Abraham Lincoln." As Hare dryly notes, this dimwit was easily swayed by words, and was blind to facts.

This has been observed in many psychopathy cases; more often than not, and it tends to make one shake their head in wonder at how many people seem to WANT to be duped, to be made fools of. What kind of psychological weaknesses drive people to prefer lies over truth?

The kinds of people that are susceptible to hypnotic evangelists such as Sonny Dewey and become mind-controlled members of those kinds of fanatical religions.

This may have something to do with what is called Cognitive Dissonance. Leon Festinger developed the theory of Cognitive Dissonance in the 50's when he apparently stumbled onto a UFO cult in the Midwest. They were prophesying a coming world cataclysm and "alien rapture." When no one was raptured and no cataclysm he studied the believers response, and detailed it in his book "WHEN PROPHECY FAILS (A social and psychological study of a modern group that predicted the destruction of the world)." Festinger observed:

"A man with a conviction is a hard man to change. Tell him you disagree and he turns away. Show him facts or figures and he questions your sources. Appeal to logic and he fails to see your point.

"We have all experienced the futility of trying to change a strong conviction, especially if the convinced person has some investment in his belief. We are familiar with the variety of ingenious defenses with which people protect their convictions, managing to keep them unscathed through the most devastating attacks.

"But man's resourcefulness goes beyond simply protecting a belief. Suppose an individual believes something with his whole heart; suppose further that he has a commitment to this belief, that he has taken irrevocable actions because of it; finally, suppose that he is presented with evidence, unequivocal and undeniable evidence, that his belief is wrong: what will happen? The individual will frequently emerge, not only unshaken, but even more convinced of the truth of his beliefs than ever before. Indeed, he may even show a new fervor about convincing and converting other people to his view."

Psychopaths just have what it takes to defraud and bilk others: they can be fast talkers, they can be charming, they can be self-assured and at ease in social situations; they are cool under pressure, unfazed by the possibility of being found out, and totally ruthless. And even when they are exposed, they can carry on as if nothing has happened, often making their accusers the targets of accusations of being victimized by THEM. (Witness how Sonny blames his wife and her lover for taking everything away from him instead of taking responsibility for his philandering, lies and callousness.)

In the book Violent Attachments, women and men have noted the particular stare of the psychopath - it is an intense, relentless gaze that seems to predict his destruction of his victim or target. Women, in particular, have reported this stare, which is related to the "predatorial" (reptilian) gaze; it is as if the psychopath is directing all of his intensity toward you through his eyes, a sensation that one woman reported as a feeling of "being eaten." They tend to invade peoples' space either by their sudden intrusions or intimidating look-overs (which some women confuse for sexuality.)

The callous use of the old, the lonely, the vulnerable, the disenfranchised, the marginalized, is a trademark of the psychopath and the traveling preacher. When any of the victims wake up to what is happening, they are generally too embarrassed to complain. And those are the kinds of people attracted to this brand of fanatical Christianity promulgated by psychopaths.

One of the chief ways psychopaths prey on others is to make use of the normal person's need to find meaning or purpose in life. They will pose as preachers, grief counselors, or "experts" of various sorts that attract followings of people who are looking for answers. They are masters of recognizing "hang-ups" and self-doubts that most people have, and they will brazenly pander to them to gain a follower to use later.
