The folks at Pixar can do no wrong with <I>Monsters, Inc.</I>, the studio's fourth feature film, which stretches the computer animation format in terms of both technical complexity and emotional impact. The giant, blue-furred James P. "Sulley" Sullivan (wonderfully voiced by John Goodman) is a scare-monster extraordinaire in the hidden world of Monstropolis, where the scaring of kids is an imperative in order to keep the entire city running. Beyond the competition to be the best at the business, Sullivan and his assistant, the one-eyed Mike Wazowski (Billy Crystal), discover what happens when the real world interacts with theirs in the form of a 2-year-old baby girl dubbed "Boo," who accidentally sneaks into the monster world with Sulley one night. Director Pete Doctor and codirectors David Silverman and Lee Unkrich follow the Pixar (<I>Toy Story</I>) blueprint with an imaginative scenario, fun characters, and ace comic timing. By the last heart-tugging shot, kids may never look at monsters the same, nor artists at what computer animation can do in the hands of magicians. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

Description

From the Academy Award(R)-winning creators of TOY STORY comes the computer-animated film that captured the hearts of fans and critics everywhere. MONSTERS, INC., is "visually dazzling, action-packed, and hilarious" (Boston Herald), featuring groundbreaking animation, imaginative storytelling, and unforgettable voice talent. John Goodman stars as the lovable James P. Sullivan (Sulley) and Billy Crystal as his wisecracking best friend, Mike Wazowski. Top scarer Sulley and his enthusiastic Scare Assistant Mike work at Monsters, Inc., the largest scream-processing factory in Monstropolis. The main power source of the monster world is the collected screams of human children. Monsters believe children are dangerous and toxic, however, and they are scared silly when a little girl wanders into their world. Sulley and Mike do their best to return the girl home, but they face monstrous intrigue and some hilarious misadventures along the way. MONSTERS, INC., is "supremely clever -- fun for kids and adults alike" (CBS-TV). Treat yourself to the most entertaining movie of the year with all-new exclusive bonus features and animation for monster laughs and monster fun.

5 out of 5 stars WOW!! What a great movie.. This movie should live on FOREVER!!!.......2007-06-22

This movie was great and it was really enjoyable and funny. I have had this movie since it came out as I went to see it in the movie theater. This would be my favorite movie of all time. Sulley(James P. Sullivan) and Mike Wazowski (the main characters of this movie) are my favorite characters in this movie and are my two favorite characters in any movie. Randall Boggs would be my third favorite character in the movie because he makes me LAUGH!! But he gets destroyed into a trailor during my favorite part of the movie which is when Mike and Sulley are hanging or flying on doors to try to get Boo home. Boo is my least favorite character in this movie because she CRIES a lot during the movie and just not my favorite. Celia, who Mike is in love with isn't all that great too. But I think Roz is great. She makes me laugh when she tells Mike that he didn't turn in his paperwork. and Mr. Waternoose would be my 5th and last most favorite character in this movie till he gets arrested by the CDA. Also, the part where Mike and Sulley go to Himalayas is great because they're in a BLIZZARD!! The worst part of the movie is when Sulley and Mike take Boo home that's when I feel to cry. But overall, this is a really great movie which I wish I could give this 10 stars. Please get this movie but Shrek s$cked!!!
Best film of the year.

5 out of 5 stars Power-ful Kiddie Entertainment.......2007-06-21

Some of the best stories for children have presented their worst fears only to have the menace brought down to size. "Jack and the Beanstalk" works that way perfectly. 'Monsters, Inc.' helps to tuck the kiddies in and give them the giggles, too. Taking near day-glow colors, the Monsters in this fluid Pixar picture are hideously cute. They live in a "green" world where the renewable resource of children's fright powers the Monster community. Looking like the sorts in (Lucas Films, Ltd. is credited here) a 'Star Wars' bar scene, the film's focus is on the power company where the employees go through magic doors, their portals to children's bedrooms where the fright factor generates their power plant.

Heading the troops is big blue "Sully" (John Goodman) a good natured monster, proud of his ability to be the equivalent of "Employee of the Month". Keeping track of his generating power, he is out to set a plant record. His green, one-eyed sidekick, Mike Wazowski, (Billy Crystal) has a Martian appearance, but his voice couldn't scare a mouse. He is smitten by one-eyed purple princess, Shroopsy with hydra hair (snake braids). They all face their competition with rascally Randall, (perfectly villainous, Steve Buscemi) the salamander-like monster with invisible capabilities. Pivotal to the plot is Mr. Waternoose, (James Coburn) a tycoon who resembles a tarantula in a three-piece suit. In the causality is 'Silkwood'-like contamination if any child or remnant remains in the Monster world. (In other words: Just like parents often say about insects or some animals: "They're more afraid of [children], than [they] are of them.") Sully and James come across "Boo" whom they find in their best interests to return to the dark realm of her own bedroom.

Formidable to the fore, 'Monsters,..." takes a premise that could have been a dumb non-starter, and provides supporting plot structures with enough heft to turn the adventure on. With Pixar animation, the movement is flowing enough to take the technological edge off the look, and Andrew Stanton and Daniel Gerson's screenplay keep the dialogue fresh and funny. Director Pete Docter gives the movie proper assembly. 'Monsters, Inc.' is therapeutically good for children's dreamscapes as well as their funny bones. (Highly recommended to rent and to own.)

5 out of 5 stars Pixar Created A Classic!.......2007-06-14

Monsters Inc is a great piece that your family will love! Loveable monsters are brought to life and make you laugh a lot! Laughter is more powerful than screams you know. A loveable classic for any collection!

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-06-13

Hey it's Mike,
Wow!! What a great movie this is. This is by far my favorite movie due to the presence of Mike and Sulley. There is not a lot of great movies out there, but this one is one of the very best!! Sulley, Mike, Randall, Roz, and Waternoose are all great characters and 3 of them are really funny! Boo and Celia are my two least favorite characters in the film. The best part of this movie is the Flying on Doors part where Randall gets destroyed.
The end is the saddest part of the movie when Sulley and Mike take Boo home.

Well this movie is the best as I wish that I can give this much more than 5 stars like a million stars. Please buy.

Kenneth Branagh's four-hour production of Shakespeare's full text for <I>Hamlet</I> is visually lush (shot in 70mm, which is rarely done) and full of fascinating story moments that normally get cut from shorter stage versions. (Your idea of what kind of fellow Polonius is may change quite a bit.) The unexpurgated approach is truly enlightening, and Branagh intermittently succeeds at giving familiar moments in the drama an original cinematic spin, including Hamlet's spooky confrontation with his father's ghost (Brian Blessed). (Branagh also imposes some Hollywood glitter on the proceedings by casting the likes of Robin Williams, Billy Crystal, Charlton Heston, and Jack Lemmon in the smaller parts.) The pre-<I>Titanic</I> Kate Winslet is very good as the doomed Ophelia, and Derek Jacobi delivers a wonderfully nuanced performance as Claudius, whose character is definitely filled out by the restored material. Branagh's own performance is a little revisionist--some viewers have quibbled with it while others seem fine with it. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

4 out of 5 stars Prepare thyself.......2007-06-25

OK...let me get my complaints outta the way, the things that make this film loose a star, first and foremost. After all, it's only my opinion.

I hate the way the Ghost is handled. Too literal...too much is shown. I prefer Zeff's take on the ghost to anyone's. Now that was creepy. This isn't. Also, Branagh has the WORST taste in music in all of Europe. It's embarrassing.

But this is a Hamlet to be seen. It's like no other. Yes, yes...the actors are fantastic, and it is beautiful to behold, like other Hamlets. Branagh's special device... and self challenge for which I applaud him, is to do the entire play. Every word. The whole shebang. In a world where even ABT is editing down their great works of 19th century entertainment, so it won't last longer than your average film I guess, this film is refreshing.

One must prepare for it. It's like going to see Wagner's "Ring" or a Eugene O'Neill play.... you know it's going to be long and intricate. You may become bored at times, but you must know you won't be for long before things pick up again, and paying attention has great rewards. Resolve yourself to meet it halfway. Also, like a Wagner opera, you must accept it for what it is, warts and all. Like a Bach Passion, or a Beethoven string quartet, it is a universe of its own. It is full of nooks and crannies. It is a complete world.

This is the great thing about this version of Hamlet. It's not tidied up for modern sensibilities of theatre. It's sprawling and expansive. The threat from Fortinbras and the entire "players" scene and the scenes on the ship to England....these tentacles from the main plot only add to the complete world of "Hamlet". It's wonderful! It puts it on par with "Lear" [which I've always though better]. It is epic. Art! With a capital "A".

5 out of 5 stars One of the best presentation of a Shakespeare play.......2007-06-22

I had the opportunity to see this film during limited premiere back in December 25, 1996. I still have the program from that time. The 3 theatres to have the honors were The Paris Theatre in New York, The Royal Theatre in Los Angeles and The York Theatre in Toronto. These theatre showed the film in its entirety with one intermission of about 10 minutes. When it went nationwide the following January 24, 1997, it was edited and shorten by about 1 hour.

I must say, watching it for the first time was exciting. The film was amazing and I was intrigue throughout. Keep in mind I was still a young high school student when I first saw this. I enjoyed every aspect of it and did not want to see it end. When the film was first released on DVD or LD, I rented it and it was still good but there is nothing like experiencing it at the theatre and presented the way it was meant to be seen.

5 out of 5 stars The Full-length Hamlet..........2007-06-10

1997's "William Shakespeare's Hamlet" is a full-length production of the original play, running to a daunting but entirely worthwhile four hours.

Kenneth Branagh, veteran of earlier screen productions of "Henry V" and "Much Ado About Nothing", is entirely credible as the melancholy Prince of Denmark, suspecting subterfuge in his father's murder and his mother's rapid remarriage. His delivery of Hamlet's signature sililoquy in a hall of mirrors is his own but excellent. The length of the production allows for a full exploration of Hamlet's behavior and of his plan for revenge; Branagh deserves credit for sustaining the ambiguity of his character throughout. His energy drives what might otherwise have become an exhausting movie, which even includes the timely arrival of the Norwegian Army at the end of the climactic sword fight between Hamlet and Ophelia's brother.

Branagh is supported by an absolutely stellar cast of "name" actors and actresses, including Kate Winslet as the unfortunate Ophelia. Noticing actors like Robin Williams and Jack Lemon in their minor roles becomes almost a little distracting as the movie progresses.

The length of the movie allows for the close exploration of the lavish sets; Blenheim Palace in England stands in for the Elsinore of the play. Period costumes and furnishings are detailed and everywhere in evidence.

This movie is most highly recommended to fans of Shakespeare and of Hamlet, who will be rewarded with an entertaining and quality effort for the investment of time.

2 out of 5 stars Where Are The Grace Notes?.......2007-05-24

I know I'm going to catch hell for this review, but I've tried to watch Branagh's Hamlet twice and quit half way through both times. This is not meant pejoratively, but Branagh's Hamlet is an assault on the senses. He brays and he mews and he mugs for the camera. Where are the grace notes? How can the Dane be such an unsympathetic character? Winslet's Ophelia is a raving hysteric, Polonius a caricature of a hypocrite, Lemmon woefully miscast, his line readings leaden. The soundtrack, always intrusive, at time overwhelms the dialogue. Bigger is not necessarily better. Give me Olivier, even Gibson, any day.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-05-21

Though quite lengthy, this version of Hamlet is amazing. Kenneth Branah does a wonderful job acting as Hamlet and Kate Winslet's performance of Olivia is equally appealing. This age old story of trechery, pride, and revenge comes to life in this movie and I would reccomend it to anyone.

Screenwriter William Goldman's novel <I>The Princess Bride</I> earned its own loyal audience on the strength of its narrative voice and its gently satirical, hyperbolic spin on swashbuckled adventure that seemed almost purely literary. For all its derring-do and vivid over-the-top characters, the book's joy was dictated as much by the deadpan tone of its narrator and a winking acknowledgement of the clichés being sent up. Miraculously, director Rob Reiner and Goldman himself managed to visualize this romantic fable while keeping that external voice largely intact: using a storytelling framework, avuncular Grandpa (Peter Falk) gradually seduces his skeptical grandson (Fred Savage) into the absurd, irresistible melodrama of the title story.

And what a story: a lowly stable boy, Westley (Cary Elwes), pledges his love to the beautiful Buttercup (Robin Wright), only to be abducted and reportedly killed by pirates while Buttercup is betrothed to the evil Prince Humperdinck. Even as Buttercup herself is kidnapped by a giant, a scheming criminal mastermind, and a master Spanish swordsman, a mysterious masked pirate (could it be Westley?) follows in pursuit. As they sail toward the Cliffs of Insanity...

The wild and woolly arcs of the story, the sudden twists of fate, and, above all, the cartoon-scaled characters all work because of Goldman's very funny script, Reiner's confident direction, and a terrific cast. Elwes and Wright, both sporting their best English accents, juggle romantic fervor and physical slapstick effortlessly, while supporting roles boast Mandy Patinkin (the swordsman Inigo Montoya), Wallace Shawn (the incredulous schemer Vizzini), and Christopher Guest (evil Count Rugen) with brief but funny cameos from Billy Crystal, Carol Kane, and Peter Cook. <I>--Sam Sutherland</I>

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Parody On Fairy Tales. Cute, Funny & Romantic With All The Classic Fairy-Tale Elements We Love. "As You Wish." .......2007-06-23

In only his 3rd time behind the camera, director Rob Reiner brings Academy Award winning screenwriter William Goldman's "The Princess Bride" to the silver screen, with Goldman himself writing the script. With excellent performances by Cary Elwes, Mandy Pantinkin, Wallace Shawn, Andre The Giant (In pace requiscat), Chris Sarandon and Christopher Guest, special appearances by Peter Falk, Carol Kane, Billy Crystal, Fred Savage Peter Cook and Mel Smith and starring Robin Wright as The Princess Bride, this classic fairy tale never disappoints for all of its 98 minutes (it never feels that long; then again, I was so busy enjoying the movie that I didn't notice the length of the film). I haven't viewed the special features yet, but they promise to be as good as the movie itself.
I recommend this movie to every female out there. You will love it and have your significant others saying "As you wish" to your every word.

The film could pass for a Disney movie, as MGM rarely produces anything this clean in this day and age (virtually no swearing, sex or nudity). A movie the entire family (and especially young couples) can enjoy together.

If I were to remake this film (theoretically speaking, of course), I would take out the bits where the Grandson interrupts the Grandfather every time Buttercup and Westley kiss. Those bits are some of the best.

The film is crammed with memorable lines, from Westley's signature saying
"As you wish" to Inigo's "My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father. Prepare to die." Watch the movie and, I promise you, you will love it.

    Rated PG for comic violence.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best films I've seen........2007-05-24

Simply put, this is one of the most clever, witty, and entertaining films I've ever seen. It's one that will always have a place of honor in my collection; it's more like a stage show than a full scale cinematic production, but that fact adds to it's charm I think.

This is one of those films that can be enjoyed by people of all ages, young and old alike. I grew up on this film, and now as an adult, I enjoy some of the more subtle comedy on an entirely different level than when I was younger, and it never loses it's appeal.

5 out of 5 stars A special edition with more than a new cover!.......2007-05-23

Princess Bride is a classic, a favorite movie of many. And this special edition is what a good Princess Bride fan is probably looking for. The home footage taken by cast members during the filming, the little tour guide book by "Fezzik", and the additional commentaries add even more magic to the movie. Did you know Andre kept Robin Penn warm by covering her whole head with his hand? It's great.

4 out of 5 stars Tremendous Fun for the Family...........2007-05-21

This film is so creative and entertaining. You will get caught up in the romance, adventure, and humor that has made this film famous. You will be quoting this film for years. It is definitely a must-see film. There is no hidden depth to it, but if you are out for entertainment, fun, and laughter this is a film you can count on. "As you wish!"

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderful story!.......2007-05-12

This movie is a lot of fun. The story is entertaining, the acting is very good, and the premise - the visualization of a book being read by a grandfather to his sick grandson - is terrific. We watch an imaginary topic come to life. Mandy Patinkin is great!

Like a dream, Howl's Moving Castle carries audiences to vistas beyond their imaginations where they experience excitement, adventure, terror, humor, and romance. With domestic box office receipts of over $210 million, Howl passed Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke to become the #3 film in Japanese history, behind his Spirited Away and James Cameron's Titanic. Based on a juvenile novel by Diana Wynne Jones, Howl's Moving Castle marks the first time Miyazaki has adapted another writer's work since Kiki's Delivery Service (1989). Sophie, a 19-year-old girl who believes she is plain, has resigned herself to a drab life in her family's hat shop--until the Witch of the Waste transforms her into a 90-year-old woman. In her aged guise, Sophie searches for a way to break the Witch's spell and finds unexpected adventures. Like Chihiro, the heroine of Spirited Away, Sophie discovers her hidden potential in a magical environment--the castle of the title. Using CG, Miyazaki creates a ramshackle structure that looks like it might disintegrate at any moment. Sophie's honesty and determination win her some valuable new friends: Markl, Howl's young apprentice; a jaunty scarecrow; Calcifer, a temperamental fire demon; and Heen, a hilarious, wheezing dog. She wins the heart of the dashing, irresponsible wizard Howl, and brings an end an unnecessary and destructive war. The film overflows with eclipsing visuals that range from frightening aerial battles to serene landscapes, and few recent features--animated or live action--offer as much magic as Howl's Moving Castle. --Charles Solomon

5 out of 5 stars What a wicked movie! (kids review).......2007-06-20

i thought this movie was an awesome movie! It was one of my favorites out of all the myuzaki movies. Well almost. And what a spectacular ending. Usually the characters wouldn't kiss at the end but in this one it shocked me. I'm fourteen and do not think kissing was disgusting.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good movie, unless you expect it to be like the original book.......2007-06-18

First of all, I need to mention that the three-star rating has more to do with my frustration with the extra features and interviews on this disc, than with the movie itself.

The movie itself is visually great, as are all of Miyazaki's movies. I was a bit taken aback since I'd read the book the movie was based on (more on this later) about 2 months before seeing the movie. It was as if Miyazaki just read the first third of the book, then put the book down and wrote his own story. The second two thirds of the movie bear no resemblance to the book whatsoever, either in plot or characterization. In some ways, I think this is a good thing - some aspects of the book's plot wouldn't translate too well to movie format. I did like the book's plot better, although it was enjoyable watching Howl the bird. :)

Then I started watching the interviews, and sat through a half an hour of Miyazaki getting praised for coming up with such ORIGINAL ideas (like a girl who comes into her own after being cursed with age, or a moving castle, or a door which opens to different cities depending on the way the doorknob is turned). While Miyazaki did take a LOT of creative license, and the movie is definitely a Miyazaki work... all of the specific ideas that I just listed SHOULD have been credited to Diana Wynne Jones, who published the book in 1986. I sat through interview after interview, waiting for SOME mention of the fact that these creative ideas had come from a children's book by the same name, but it never happened. It's as if the movie makers are completely unaware that there had been a book before the movie. And I just don't like it when credit is not given where credit is due.

If it weren't for my frustration with the interviews, I probably would be giving this DVD four stars instead of three... I did enjoy the movie, and once I accepted the fact that Miyazaki had taken the basic story elements from the book and then written his OWN plot, I thought that there were many good things about the movie. It wasn't my favorite Miyazaki movie, but it was still pretty good.

3 out of 5 stars Not one of his best movies!.......2007-06-12

I have mixed feelings about this film. I'm not a big fan of Howl! The film had plenty of action and drama but I couldn't swallow some aspects of this film. It strives to be real concerning the but ends up naseauting toward the end!

I think when anime tries to make it's characters more real it seems more surreal! I love the visuals I just couldn't stomache the characterization. Definitely not his best film!

    5 out of 5 stars Classic!.......2007-06-03

We went to the movie theater to see this premier, and it was even more mind blowing then. This is not a simple story, like Disney. The story gets very complicated, but in the end it's all worth it. Billy Cristal as a fire was genius! We fell in love with this movie.

    5 out of 5 stars Beautiful .......2007-06-01

Howl's Moving Castle was the third movie that I watched of Miyazaki's movies I believe. Every one of his movies has touched me in some way and I love them all. This one in particular is very beautiful. I guess being of his newer ones, it's visuals and stunning art is astounding. It took me a couple of times of watching to actually grasp the whole plot of the story and to understand what was going on. This movie is surely a Miyazaki classic and will catch the hearts of children and adults. If you love Miyazaki films you won't be disappointed.

<I>61*</I> is an endearing ode to the baseball days of yore when the press was the enemy, salaries were in check, and breaking records with bat and glove took on Ruthian proportions. In 1961 baseball expanded its season from 154 games to 162, allowing weaker pitching into the major leagues and two New York Yankees teammates--the colorless Roger Maris and golden boy Mickey Mantle--to make an assault on the sport's ultimate record: Babe Ruth's 60 home runs. To add to the stew, baseball commissioner Ford Frick announced any record set in the last eight games of the season wouldn't count toward the official record; records had to be achieved in 154 games.

Director Billy Crystal guarantees success for his movie in the perfect casting of the leads. Barry Pepper (<I>Saving Private Ryan</I>'s religious sniper) is deft as Maris, and Thomas Jane is a perfect Mantle, a superman in a Yankee uniform. Despite the differences between family man Maris and hard-living Mantle, they form a rewarding friendship amid the media and fan frenzy. The shy Maris took the brunt of the storm, even facing boo-birds in his home stadium. Crystal and first-time writer Hank Steinberg keep the pace moving quickly between the field, the locker room, the press box, and the home front. The film never tries to dazzle with more than the facts (and it softens Mantle up a bit), yet it belongs on the short list of grand baseball movies. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

5 out of 5 stars Another great baseball movie!.......2007-05-29

I think that I have never watched a game of baseball on tv all the way through. I have been to see some great teams play live, including one of the last games with Nolan Ryan pitching. So you could say I'm not a fan, nor am I a complete non fan.

However, I find that I almost always love baseball movies! Bull Duram, The Natural, The Rookie, The Babe, Field of Dreams, Eight Men Out, etc, etc, etc...

Here in "61" is another great Drama, with comedic moments, but more so a touching film, that explores the trials and tribulations of greatness. Watching this fillm is an excellent way to spend a couple of hours!

4 out of 5 stars Still the homerun King.......2007-03-07

I wasn't alive during the chase. Wasn't born until 20 years later. However my father was and his father as well. From what they tell me, it was a great time for baseball. It was a great time to be a baseball fan. Little did I know that in the summer of '98, I'd be going through a chase of my own. Yes, it was a great moment for baseball, and yes it was great to be a fan.

However, as we all now know, the most respected record in all of baseball was tainted soon after by allegations and denials and by the sheer un-believability that 61 and eventually 70 would fall. As baseball fans we went through enormous highs to then go through an enormous low. Some of us are still stuck down there actually.

So a couple of fans of my father's generation decided to come out with a true story of baseball glory. A real chase of monumental proportions was made available to us in the movie, 61. Some of us younger fans were glad we got to see records being broken, but now the majority of us feel cheated. We didn't get to see records being broken. We got to see records being stolen. So what do we have to look back to? What can we say was the greatest moment in baseball history while we were alive? Right now, I can't think of any. This is why I appreciate the efforts of this movie to tell the true-life story of the real chase between Mantle and Maris for Ruth's record. While I was never ther to witness it for myself, I can certainly paint a picture now thanks to Billy Crystal and to the actors involved.

I don't think I can rate this movie based on performances, but I can rate this movie based on facts and what is real. Something whole and pure was brought back to us some 40 years later to remind us of how pure the game used to be. This film is not the greatest film ever made, but if you're a generational baseball fan, this movie stands right next to the likes of Field of Dreams and others who were true to the sport of baseball.

1 out of 5 stars Crystal's "Rewriting of history" is a shameful joke.......2006-12-30

Crystal's rewriting of history does no one any service. The historical scene about Mantle complaining that he "failed" his draft induction physical is laughable at best. Mantle was selected to the all star team that year! He was MVP later! Mantle was known as the "fastest man to first base" at this time, and his complaint that he couldn't serve is a joke. Boston Red Sox's Ted Williams, while in Korea on his SECOND tour of military duty (WWII was his first), stated when he was crash landed his fighter jet, he ran away from it "FASTER THAN MICKEY MANTLE!" Crystal a draft dodger himslf (Vietnam), should be ashamed of this portrayal of Mantle and rewriting history! Disgusting.

4 out of 5 stars The M&M Race for the Babe's Single Season Record, SUBERB MOVIE!.......2006-07-26

The Greatest race between two baseball players is told with the direction of big Yankees fan Billy Crystal & suberb performaces from Thomas Jane as #7 Mickey Mantle & Barry Pepper as #9 Roger Maris in the Yankee's 1961 season as the two marvels race to beat Babe Ruth's 1927 single season record of 60 homers. It's a suberb, enthralling, entertaining movie of America's past Time, It's a grand slam triumph & one of most accurate baseball movies ever made. If you liked "Field of Dreams" & "the Natural" witness baseball history at it's finest in the movies with "61*" "ROGER!" "ROGER!"

High concept and high class, <I>An American Classic</I> is a worthy visual complement to Tony Bennett's 2006 duets CD of the same name. The notion of pairing veteran artists with a variety of singing partners is nothing new, of course (cf. B.B. King and Frank Sinatra, among many others), but this one goes a step further; under the direction of Rob Marshall (<I>Chicago</I>, <I>Memoirs of a Geisha</I>) and his team, Bennett appears in what's described as a "docu-musical," faithfully re-creating a variety of performance settings much like the ones in which the 80-year-old singer has appeared in the course of his long, fruitful career. Thus we find him on a concert stage with Barbra Streisand ("Smile"), in a nightclub with John Legend (a swinging, uptempo "Sing, You Sinners"), in the studio with k.d. lang and trumpeter Chris Botti ("Because of You"), on a '60s-style TV variety show with Diana Krall (a classy "The Best is Yet to Come"), in Vegas with Elton John ("Rags To Riches") and then Michael Buble (an amusing "Just in Time"), and so forth, on up to Bennett's triumphant shot on <I>MTV Unplugged</I> with Christina Aguilera (no jazz singer, but she keeps most of her excesses in check on "Steppin' Out") and the inevitable "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" (Bennett with piano accompaniment only). It's all very respectful, well staged, and entertainingly choreographed, but if this 45-minute cavalcade has a significant shortcoming, it's that it mostly lacks fire and spontaneity; the only time Bennett cuts loose is during an audio-only "I Got Rhythm" heard under the various DVD menus. Viewers may also be disappointed that Sting, Bono, Paul McCartney, James Taylor, the Dixie Chicks, and several others on the CD do not appear here, and it's a notable drag that not a single one of the composers or arrangers of the material is identified. Bonus features include a "making of" documentary and other featurettes. <I>--Sam Graham</I>

TONY BENNETT: AN AMERICAN CLASSIC is a ground-breaking television event that takes us on a musical journey of this legendary entertainer's life. Re-creating the venues of Tony's career, from the downtown Greenwich Village club where Tony was discovered, to the Columbia recording studios of the early 60's, from rat pack Las Vegas to Carnegie Hall, Tony will be joined for each show-stopping number by the myriad of superstars that appear with him on his Duets album. In a bold re-invention of the form, each set piece was filmed as a small movie by an Academy Award-winning team, lead by director Rob Marshall (Memoirs Of A Geisha, Chicago.) Seamlessly woven throughout the program will be introductions and narrative insights. This event invites us to celebrate the life of who Frank Sinatra called "the greatest singer ever." As the special ends, Tony Bennett will take the empty stage, this time alone, and deliver his signature classic, "I Left My Heart In San Francisco."

5 out of 5 stars Great production, great choreography, great performances!.......2007-05-12

Before I purchased this item, I thought I would only enjoy a few tracks by my favorite artists. But, it kept me enthralled all through the playing time. Personally, I bought this one because I like Barbra Streisand. But, wow, all the duet performances are so great. I've watched it twice now (in only 2 weeks). And I think I'll still enjoy it some more times. I think this DVD can be played at your home parties for the enjoyment of your valued guests.

    4 out of 5 stars Living Legend!.......2007-03-27

First, I give this four starts and not five only for the brevity of the program. But 40-odd minutes still offer many opportunities to appreciate what this 80 year-old can do! The creative program was directed by Rob Marshall and includes choreography (Tony even dances a bit) and visuals that live up to his Chicago accomplishments. Being something of a purist, I have to say I was initially skeptical of the "guest list." Each musician rises to the challenge, and the songs alternate between touching and flashy. Tony shines in each tune, an effect heightened by a full orchestra and elaborate sets. The film quality is excellent and vivid as is the sound recording. I found myself watching and re-watching sections over and over again -- you will, too. The extra features (including the "making of" documentary) are very interesting, too. This project was clearly a work of love for all involved. What a fine way to celebrate Tony's career.

    4 out of 5 stars Great Buy.......2007-03-26

I had caught the tail end of this concert when it was on tv. I enjoyed what I saw and heard, and It was definately what I had expected. Very good singing by Toney B's guest and the incomperable Toney B was excellent as always!!!!!!!! He still has his pipes at 80!!!!! Totally blew me away!!!! The concert is more of a mock tv show. Though I did like this format, it lacked the enthusiasm of those old dean martin tv shows. The director should have had more interaction with Tony and his guest singers. It would have been fun to see him talking about jazz music, with the modern day crooner, Michael Buble , for instance. All in all this is a great dvd definately worth buying, with the performances with Christina Agulara and Michael Buble standing out!!!!

4 out of 5 stars cancel the CHEEZY dancers -you don't need em + won't miss em.......2007-03-20

I am giving four stars because I dont waste my time writing negative reviews- so a four star review means I have to diss something. My stomach was turning watching the cheezy and totally gross dance scenes- feathered fans and top hats and canes- PUHLEEZE !! None of these vocals are enhanced in any way buy these gyrating midriffs with the same old sorry meaningless cliched moves and the horrific non flattering outfits- they look like pole dancers in an atlantic city off the beaten path porn palace. Have I made my case?
Other than that the songs chosen were interesting, everyone does a masterful job singing - but I couldn't watch this tape again. These 2006 scenes just makes one all the more nostalgic for the neon lights of the old time dimly lit smoky jazz clubs when musical craft was king- I bet tony wishes that this style was still reigning as well

Three middle-age buddies (Billy Crystal, Daniel Stern, Bruno Kirby) facing personal crises decide to sign up for a two-week cattle run for a change of pace. The trail proves a tougher place than anyone thought, and the boss (Jack Palance) is a grizzled taskmaster who doesn't cotton to tenderfoot urbanites. Popular in theaters, the film is both funny and moving, with Crystal giving one of his most complete performances and Palance (who won a Best Supporting Actor Oscar) a lot of colorful fun. Director Ron Underwood (<I>Heart and Souls</I>) subtly shifts the tone of the film from broad comedy to poignancy over its running time, and he makes the story's end a bittersweet victory that feels like life as most people know it. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars In Appreciation of Bruno Kirby.......2006-09-17

Bruno Kirby passed away not too long ago...wow...it really kind of blew me away...he was so young and talented and still had so much to offer the world. But we must not be overly sad at his death, we must know and feel that even now the life that Bruno Kirby was/is/and will always be is doing even greater things...

I love this movie. I watch this movie every time I'm in the "dumps". No matter how much my life has improved over the years, there are those days where I just don't feel I'm doing enough. I don't think this makes me "nagative" as much as it means that I am human. The whole reason why we don't think our life is living up to our expectations is because deep within our soul, we know that we have EVEN MORE to express, extend, and experience...

This movie especially moves me now because I am in my early 40s. When I first saw it, I thought it was funny, but I couldn't totally relate to it. I thought that I was eons away from becoming 40. (It gets here sooner than you realize, kid...) I mean, I remember when my dad turned 40 and I could never get as old as my dad!

    Yeah, okay...dream on...

This movie will make you look at life differently, that is, if you are willing to look at life differently. If you just go into it thinking it's just going to be a funny movie with Bruno Kirby and Billy Crystal and Daniel Stearn, then that is just what you'll get, but if you go into it with a willingness to see it as a metaphor for life, you will get this as well.

Y'see, everyone talks about women going through the change of life...men go through a change, as well. But as a rule, we don't talk about things like that. Men are always supposed to be stoic and strong and able to leap tall buildings with a single bound...not true...we are not made of steel...we are made of bone and blood and muscle...we are bound by the same laws as everyone else and sometimes, we feel even more pressure to become something or do something big and when we haven't made the deadline or scored the touchdown or hit the home run by the time we thought we would, we feel like even more of a failure.

But just like the movie suggests, Life is a "do over". We can decide today to begin again. To shake the dust of our butts and get right back in the saddle.

    YEEEEE-HAAAAAA!

Oh, life is good people...life is good! Thank you, Bruno Kirby for making this movie part of our document to human history.

5 out of 5 stars "You eat lunch at 10. You eat dinner at 2:30. You eat breakfast the day before.".......2006-08-19

I saw this movie about 11 years ago when I was 10. I had forgotten how funny it truely was. My mother wanted to rent it to let my step brother and sister watch it. I laughed the whole time. What the movie is about is 3 guys are fereling bad about there age so one of them sets a trip up. On the trip they are driving cattle from New Mexico to Colorado. Along the way many things happen that helps them realize just how strong they are. I laughed so many times at this movie. Billy Crystal and Daniel Stern are great. This is a movie anyone will easly be able to enjoy.

    5 out of 5 stars City Slickers.......2006-07-01

I love Billy Crystal anyway and thought this was a great movie.
As always he kept me laughing. I love it when people are in places that are out of their element and it was a very funny and enjoyable movie.

    5 out of 5 stars Really Funny.......2006-06-01

This is the movie I watch when I am a little depressed, or just need to laugh for awhile. It never fails to cheer me up. It is one of my go-to movies.

Quality movie, clean humor for the most part, and a good plot. The contrast of the main characters is really good and gives the movie its edge.

This is not Dumb and Dumber type humor, it is intelligent humor, for lack of a better term. There is no way you can watch this movie and not enjoy it. Highly recommended.

    5 out of 5 stars He's Not the Father!.......2006-04-15

CITY SLICKERS holds the secret to life, and gives it up to viewers with plenty of laughs. What I mean is, it's funny, but it's not slap-stick. The story stays with me to this day because it portrays the problems of your average joe-shmoe and gives an overly simplified, but right answer to living a joe-shmoe life.

It has a little bit of run-down urban life, a little bit of the wild, wild west, and a lot of Billy Crystal doing what he does best while giving birth to a calf (turns out he's not the father--he's the mom).

Cast Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal together in a film and it should be a sucker's bet as to who's going to be funnier and who's going to give the more nuanced performance. Somehow, though, De Niro walks away with most of the laughs in <I>Analyze This</I>, a buddy action-comedy about a mob boss (De Niro, natch) suffering from panic attacks who makes a nebbishy shrink (Crystal, natch) an offer he can't refuse--actually, it's not really an offer, it's a command. The good doctor is forced to help the gangster get in touch with his feelings. Had the brilliant TV series <I>The Sopranos</I> not underscored how thin and watery and shticky director-cowriter Harold Ramis's approach to such potentially rich material actually is, the movie--a hit in theaters and De Niro's biggest film ever--would seem more fresh and kicky. De Niro's definitely a hoot as the ever milder menace, and Crystal actually concentrates on giving a credible performance opposite the acting legend (alas, he doesn't turn his character's fear of his patient into inspired comedy, as Alan Arkin did in <I>Grosse Pointe Blank</I>). The conclusion devolves into the requisite gunplay, and Chazz Palminteri and Lisa Kudrow are criminally wasted as an opposing mob boss and Crystal's fiancée, respectively, but overall, it's breezy fun. <I>--David Kronke</I>

    5 out of 5 stars SPOOF PROOF.......2007-03-24

If you'd like to see and hear Billy Crystal at the top of his game, while Robert De Niro does a terrific parody of some of his previous roles, go no further. This movie has something for everyone, including a very hip score, as well as a surprise appearance by Tony Bennette. Try to beat that combination for some entertainment on a chilly night in front of the television, along with a fire in your fireplace, a glass of Champagne and a bowl of popcorn, shared by the one you love.

4 out of 5 stars Very nice film to see.......2007-01-21

Robert De Niro and Billy Crystal together make you laugh through all over the movie. Robert De Niro as a mafia boss who become "too soft" and Billy Crystal as a "schrink", who desperately wanna marry on his fiancee (Lisa Kudrow), but can't... because he is too good and too honesty... and was unlucky to hit mafia guys car... And now he has to work on problems of mafia boss, that is certainly not easy.

The cherry of the crew is Lisa Kudrow, who as always funny and crazy.
    Amazing comedy for all family.

    5 out of 5 stars Masterpiece!.......2006-05-29

Ever thought about a psychiatrist interacting with a leader of a gang? Well, this is what this movie will be all about!

Paul Vitti (Robert Deniro) is the leader of a very powerful gang of New York City, he can get himself anything he demands; anything but happiness. As we can see, this guy is being tortured by some of the dark memories from his childhood, and a psychiatrist is what he exactly needs.

Ben Sobol (Billy Crystal) is a divorced psychiatrist who is about to merry another person, a news reporter (Lisa Kudrow). During his well planned honeymoon, Paul paid him a visit seeking emergency treatments to turn him into a happy person. Ben wants no part of this, you can't do much with a gun pointed at your face eh?

Could he handle it? Well, watch this movie! This movie tells you an unique story with many fascinating jokes, a great plot and... hehe you will see.

    Enjoy the show!!! :)

    4 out of 5 stars YOU... YOU..........2005-11-13

A great comedy, Analyze This, brings to the screen the story of a divorced shrink about to get remarried. Things get a little more complicated when a mobster who feels that he is going all "soft" seeks his counselling...
Robert De Niro, Billy Crystal, Lisa Kudrow and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are exceptional to say the least!
Very well written and very well presented, the movie is without a doubt guaranteed to provide more than just a few laughs.
On the negative side, there is a little too much exaggeration e.g. the delivery of the fountain as a wedding gift.
Nevertheless, the setting, the plot, the dialogues, the humor, and the music are all wonderful!
In short, Analyze This is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

What a great blend of two different genres. That combined with Billy Crystal and Bob De Niro becomes a winning combination. Filled with non-stops laugh this movie is sure to entertain all audiences. I recommend both this movie and the sequel, "Analyze That."

4 out of 5 stars One of the better sequels.......2007-06-11

Sequels are often lame imitations of the original, but City Slickers 2 keeps the atmosphere and much of the chemistry of City Slickers 1. The acting is excellent, especially Jack Palance (as usual). The "Indiana Jones" mine ride is a bit corny, but after all, the storyline is a fantasy anyway! If you enjoyed the first one, you will like City Slickers 2. The video and sound quality on this sequel is somewhat superior to the first one.

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome movie!!!.......2006-09-17

I actually saw this movie before I saw the first one. I loved it so much though! It is really a funny movie and the cast is phenominal! I was a little disapointed that Bruno Kirby wasn't in this one but the character Glen soon replaced that. Its a really awesome movie and should be watched again and again and again...

    5 out of 5 stars Great movie!.......2006-05-29

I have seen this movie on HBO and it is cool!Rated PG-13 for a comic sex scene and off-color humor.

    4 out of 5 stars Clueless-But Funny Characters.......2006-04-29

I don't have a problem with sequels because many times I find them more appealing than the original. This is another example, although not a wide margin. The first was good; this is a little better.

Despite being almost two hours which is long for a comedy, this moves very fast. That's the selling point of the movie: it's entertaining. Not only do you get a comedy with a lot of laughs, you get brilliant Western scenery enhanced by the widescreen DVD.

The negatives, at least for me, was the all-too-secular outlook on life and an obsession with sex espoused by lead actor Billy Crystal and his clueless buddies Daniel Stern and Jon Lovitz and the unnecessary profanity by Jack Palance.

All the characters, however, are definitely fun to watch and there is a good message in the end about sacrificing for friends and relatives. The story also features a very neat twist at the end. This is a film you can laugh at with multiple viewings.

5 out of 5 stars "What do you think of that, Spanky?".......2006-03-16

    Here comes . . . something different.

In the first city slickers, you are introduced to mitch who is a buisness man trying to do something different with his life and joins a cattle drive with his friends. Along the way he learns about life and morals from his cattle drive buddy Curly. Unfortuneatly, he died during the cattle drive and had to be buried by his friends.

    Fast foward a year later.

After realizing that he's now forty, he decides to have no surprises on his birthday but gets one very big one instead: A map in Curly's hat that was given to him.

A treasure map from the 1900's to be exact.

And what's more surprising is the fact that Curly, although he was buried for a year, might still be alive.

This is a great sequel. A different pace, mood, setting, theme, everything. That's what you gotta do with a sequel; try something different.

I loved watching mitch and his buddies figure out the clues while battling claim jumpers and avoiding dangerous territory.

There's gold in them there hills . . . and Curly's buddies are just the ones to find it.

    Enjoy!
