If you've never seen an aviation movie before in your entire life, you'll be blissfully ignorant of the fact that <I>Memphis Belle</I> shamelessly (and yet gloriously) incorporates just about every cliché in the flight-movie handbook. If you're a big fan of aviation movies--especially movies about World War II bomber crews--you'll be glad that the genre's clichés have been handled with such professional flair. As it follows the crew of a B-17 bomber on its final and most dangerous mission over Germany, <I>Memphis Belle</I> may be little more than a slick and highly authentic presentation of familiar thrills and characters, but it's a rousing piece of entertainment. Featuring an ensemble cast of fresh faces who've since enjoyed thriving careers (including Billy Zane, Sean Astin, Eric Stoltz, D.B. Sweeney, and Harry Connick Jr.), the movie exists as a fitting tribute to the men who fought and often died in the air over hostile territory. It's the Hollywood version of a 1944 wartime documentary made by legendary director William Wyler (whose daughter served as one of this film's producers), and as such it's a bit contrived and melodramatic. And yet, this exciting movie is almost certain to grab and hold your attention, offering an honorable reminder of the bravery and integrity that were crucial ingredients of any bomber's crew. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

4 out of 5 stars Sentimental, But It Works!.......2007-06-17

1990's "Memphis Belle" may be sentimental, corny, and cliched, but as a movie about bomber crews flying dangerous routes over Nazi Germany, it works wonderfully well. Only the most cynical of viewers will failed to be moved by its simple but effective story.

"Memphis Belle" is based on the story of a real-life B-17 about to finish 25 combat missions, after which its crew will be eligible to rotate home from the war in Europe. Their final mission will be a daylight run over Dresden, a heavily defended target. An ensemble cast headed by Matthew Modine as the sober young pilot-in-charge goes through its flight preparations, while a series of short vignettes introduces the viewer to the individual members of the crew. The stand-out young cast includes Eric Stoltz as a radio operator with aspirations of being a poet; Tate Donovan as the cocky, attention-seeking co-pilot; Billy Zane as a bombardier who is about to pay a price for living a lie; DB Sweeney as the flak-happy navigator; and in a superb cameo, jazz musician Harry Connick, Jr, as the tail gunner. Connick, by the way, does a impressive job on an improvised version of "Danny Boy" early in the movie.

The action involving the aircrew is nicely balanced by a subplot on the ground, as a war-weary Bomber Group commander (earnestly played by David Straitharn) must reel in a cynical public affairs officer (John Lithgow). Their confrontation provides context to what is happening to the Memphis Belle in the air.

The final mission turns into a nightmare of flak, enemy fighters, casualties, and mechanical failures, as the crews ends up nursing a stricken bomber towards its home field in England. The final minutes of the movie should leave no viewer unmoved.

This movie is highly recommended to those looking for an entertaining and fairly realistic movie on the bomber campaign against Hitler's Germany.

5 out of 5 stars The key to enjoying this movie..........2007-05-21

...is to realize that, although no single plane and crew experienced everything that's shown happening to the Memphis Belle in this film -- and certainly not on a single mission -- nevertheless, everything that is shown undoubtedly happened to many, many planes and crews during the long bombing campaign in the European theater. To watch this movie is to get a small taste of the fear, tragedy, and triumph experienced by those brave men (and boys).
Several years ago, I stood in my back yard and watched a vintage P-51 Mustang (the "little friends" of this movie) roar overhead at low altitude on its way to an air show at a nearby airport. I was stunned at the raw power of that 60 year old aircraft, which made today's small Cessna-type aircraft seem like mosquitos in comparison. Watching "Memphis Belle", I couldn't help but feel that the 40s were in some way the peak of manned flight. Today we have supersonic or hypersonic flight, and are beginning to see pilot-less combat aircraft. It seems to me that none of them compare to those big, lumbering, steel and plexiglass B-17s and their young, inexperienced crews.

5 out of 5 stars Good Show.......2007-03-24

I liked this movie. The airplanes in this movie are getting rare, and I like the historical aspect of the movie. We should all remember what those men did for our freedom. I would not have wanted to be in their shoes. I am thankful to be an American!

5 out of 5 stars A Big Hit for the Elementary School Boys Crowd.......2007-03-23

We purchased this DVD for our friends' son's 7th birthday. He is obsessed with airplanes. He usually fast-forwards movies to get to any scene with a fighter jet. This is his favorite movie, so of course he loved the gift. We haven't been able to find it locally for sale, only for rent. I would recommend this to anyone who has a son/nephew/etc who is into airplanes.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better..........2007-02-23

I wish I could give this movie a better rating but I saw it on cable a little while ago and it set me thinking. My problem is that the movie is a bit too prosaic and formulaic. It suffers from a weak script. Most of the crew are the clean-cut, all American boys from the movies of the war era and, as such, they lack definition, individuality and some credibility. The song by Harry Connick seems like a gratuitous addition. Having said that, it was good to see some of the old warbirds in the air and the movie gains life when the mission actually begins.
I took my Dad to see the movie when it was in the theaters. He was an waist gunner on a B-17 in 1943 and I was interested in his reaction. He said he'd seen most of the instances portrayed except the mid-air collision. He also managed to tell me a few more things over the years before he passed: like the time a plane blew up on the ground while being loaded for a mission or the time their tail gunner bailed out after the plane was hit and the communications link was shattered. He also saw men fall to their knees in tears out of fear of the upcoming mission. Anyone who has stood in a B-17 and seen the thin sheet aluminum and bracing that was their protection will realize how naked these men must have felt. They deserve a grittier and more nuanced homage than this film gives them.
It's not that it's a bad film; it's better than the juvenalia of the more recent Pearl Harbor but lacks the strength that made the series Band of Brothers so exceptional.

Filmmaker Robert Zemeckis topped his breakaway hit <I>Romancing the Stone</I> with <I>Back to the Future</I>, a joyous comedy with a dazzling hook: what would it be like to meet your parents in their youth? Billed as a special-effects comedy, the imaginative film (the top box-office smash of 1985) has staying power because of the heart behind Zemeckis and Bob Gale's script. High schooler Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox, during the height of his TV success) is catapulted back to the '50s where he sees his parents in their teens, and accidentally changes the history of how Mom and Dad met. Filled with the humorous ideology of the '50s, filtered through the knowledge of the '80s (actor Ronald Reagan is president, ha!), the film comes off as a <I>Twilight Zone</I> episode written by Preston Sturges. Filled with memorable effects and two wonderfully off-key, perfectly cast performances: Christopher Lloyd as the crazy scientist who builds the time machine (a DeLorean luxury car) and Crispin Glover as Marty's geeky dad. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

Critics and audiences didn't seem too happy with <I>Back to the Future, Part II</I>, the inventive, perhaps too clever sequel. Director Zemeckis and cast bent over backwards to add layers of time-travel complication, and while it surely exercises the brain it isn't necessarily funny in the same way that its predecessor was. It's well worth a visit, though, just to appreciate the imagination that went into it, particularly in a finale that has Marty watching his own actions from the first film. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Shot back-to-back with the second chapter in the trilogy, <I>Back to the Future, Part III</I> is less hectic than that film and has the same sweet spirit of the first, albeit in a whole new setting. This time, Marty ends up in the Old West of 1885, trying to prevent the death of mad scientist Christopher Lloyd at the hands of gunman Buford "Mad Dog" Tannen (Thomas F. Wilson, who had a recurring role as the bully Biff). Director Zemeckis successfully blends exciting special effects with the traditions of a Western and comes up with something original and fun. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

4 out of 5 stars Excellent movie for all family.......2007-06-08

I've watched all films when they where first released more than one time.

They depict the adventures of michael j. fox's character in a light and (nowadays) naive way.

The effects are good even tough pretty simplistic for today's standards.

The extras worth the price!

4 out of 5 stars The Source of Oedipal Complexes Throughout the 80s.......2007-06-07

This was Hollywood magic all the way. With the direction of Zemeckis, the handling of Spielberg, and the comedic talents of Fox, how could you go wrong? Yes, parts 2 and 3 lost a bit of the luster of the series, but part 1 was genius. Who wouldn't want to have known what their parents were like at their age? Original storytelling with heart, Hollywood could do some refresher courses on how to make movies by reviewing this one. I fear the day Spielberg retires.

While director Norman Jewison's <I>Moonstruck</I> is a romantic cornerstone, this 1994 film is often overlooked. It's a sweet valentine about a young woman, aptly named Faith (Marisa Tomei, never cuter), who chases an unknown man to Europe because the name "Damon Bradley" was once spelled on an Ouija board as her true love. With her sister-in-law (Bonnie Hunt, whose own marriage seems to be falling apart), she travels the streets of Rome looking for Damon Bradley.

And lo and behold, she literally runs into a man claiming to be Damon. Is this meant to be? Faith certainly thinks so. Robert Downey Jr. (also never cuter) plays Damon in a role that showcases his charms. He shows his quick wit in handing Faith's advances and his absolute devotion to her when the winds change. Despite the cuteness factor, this is a movie to fall in love with. Jewison and Sven Nykvist (Ingmar Bergman's cameraman) present a sun-kissed Italy so beautiful, you might be tempted to hop a plane immediately after viewing the movie. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

A story written by the stars.... This is an amazing movie. Beautiful locations, excelent actors and a fabulous plot. Has been my favorite for the longest time. If you liked The lake house or what dreams may come you will absolutely love this one.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Sweet Movie.......2006-11-10

I have seen this movie before I purchased it, but somehow it didn't have the same effect on me as it did when I was younger. It's still a sweet movie, although it really isn't interesting to me until she gets to Europe. The end is very romantic and sweet.

5 out of 5 stars A Man Dares to Review This Movie.......2006-11-06

I don't want to parrot what the editorial review says, but he pretty much nails it right on. "Only You" is something of an enigma--you can never find it in stores, rarely even in a rental shop. My sisters and I loved this movie in our teens--Sarah holds the record for "Most Times Watched." She's not pathetic, it's just that enjoyable. Like "the cop and the waitress" or "While You Were Sleeping" it's one of the genre that belongs in your rotation.

Here's what the editor didn't tell you:
Bonnie Hunt and Marisa Tomei are beautiful. I still have a crush on Marisa Tomei...well, at least enough to chase down whatever movies she's been in since I saw this one. Also, it's quotable. Not quite as good as "The Princess Bride" but a lot of fun to rehash! ("It'ly! My wife's in It'ly!")

Yes, the scenery. Yes, Robert Downey Jr. is at the top of his game. And I've gotta say that with all the scandalous behavior in the movie world today, I feel so good about the treatment of marriage in this movie. (I'll spoil this much of it for you.) This movie makes 3 true statements: Both finding the right person and marriage itself are nearly impossible quests, but both are well worth working out. And you can tell a lot about a woman by the shoes she wears.

I'm buying the widescreen version as soon as I am done with this review. You should too.

4 out of 5 stars Nice Movie.......2007-05-14

Nice Hollywood movie. Lots of bare nudity for those who like it. Unfortunately the DVD does not have any English subtitles & hence it becomes dificult to understand the movie, in case you've got to watch the movie in mute mode for reasons whatsoever.

5 out of 5 stars very nice t&a movie.......2007-03-09

To make a long story ... short, this is a movie with LOTS of Joan Severance and I mean LOTS of her and some other chic.
For anything else go and look elsewhere.
Regards

3 out of 5 stars Joan Severance --what can you say!!!!!!!.......2007-01-26

Not the best movie ever made that's for sure but any movie with Joan Severance is always worth a look. How she is not a top A star I will never know,Paris Hilton or Britney don't even come close to Joan Severance.

4 out of 5 stars Mmm, mmm Good!.......2003-02-26

This erotic drama is a keeper. It definitely appeals to the senses. Hot steaming chinese baths, firecrackers. Passion, passion, passion all around. You will love it. Never thought acupunture could look so exhilirating. Billy Zane -- whoo, baby! Wonderfully sexy film.

4 out of 5 stars Joan Severance is delicious.......2002-08-01

I would say this is Joan Severance's best movie. Since appearing in small roles in See No Evil, Hear No Evil and Bird on a Wire, she has been relegated to B-movie erotica, but she has given it her best. She truly is an exquisite creature, with mesmerizing blue eyes and an incredible body.
She is perfect as the sexually repressed housewife who stumbles into a sexual liaison with her gardener, played by Billy Zane, and his sometime lover May Karasun. Like others have said, the photography at the lake in the movie is stunning and adds tremendously to its sensual appeal.
The movie takes a downturn into negativity with the revelations about the Severance character's painful past, at which point the sensuality is abruptly cut off. Talk about coitus interruptus! But it is still a captivating, memorable movie.

This plain-vanilla version of the old Lee Falk comic strip stars Billy Zane as a 1930s incarnation of the Phantom, an African-based, masked hero whose forefathers have all donned the costume at one time or another. Sworn to crush evil, the Phantom leaves his jungle lair to venture to New York, where he takes on a charming but criminal mastermind (Treat Williams). There's no oomph to this film at all. The very capable director Simon Wincer (<I>Phar Lap</I>) seems to be working with a leaden production and an inferior talent pool behind the camera. The talent in front of the camera do their best, but it isn't enough. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars Love the Phantom.......2007-05-23

I wish there could be a sequel. Love the Phantom and his gang.

3 out of 5 stars Mr. Walker!.......2007-03-16

Oh Ghost Who Walks! What way to kill a potential series. Zane is great as the Phantom. However, they should have stuck to his origins as written by the creator and not come up with a weak "rule the world" with mystic skulls story. It would have been more exciting to see how he gave up fame and love to become the Phantom when his Father died....and to explain his "Mr. Walker" alter ego...not to mention his other traits and qualities.

4 out of 5 stars My boys picked this out and we all loved it.......2007-03-08

Ok , so this isn't the best movie ever made , it's still one slam bang adventure movie that even though it has some places that might not be kid friendly, is still a great family action movie. Billy Zane and Kristy Swanson make a nice couple and Treat Williams is one bad guy that you can't wait to see get what he should. All in all a very good , but not great action movie for the whole family

4 out of 5 stars Comic .......2007-01-30

Based on the comic it was good. A little bit corny but the scenery was awesome!

5 out of 5 stars Loved it.......2007-01-23

My two year-old boy loves this movie - he even seems to find it humorous. Something about the man in the purple body suit ... I like it a lot, too - good thing since we watch it about 4 times a week or more. I like it because a. the violence is minimal and mostly either off screen or just silly - one villian falls in a shark infested moat - but the camera doesn't dwell on it. b. lots of planes, trucks and boats, a horse and a dog - which Nathan likes. c. Finally, it is funny! Treat Williams as Xander Drax is very funny, in a comic-booky way - and so is Billy Zane, as the Phantom. CZ Jones makes a good villianess, too. All in all, I think the casting is excellent, and the scenary is beautiful.

This is a good movie for kids and for the adults who have to watch the movies with them! I hope there will be a sequel.

There are several occasions when this rousing Australian thriller from 1987 should have ended with a well-placed shot from a speargun or a stronger knot of rope, but you don't think about these nit-picky details when you're being scared out of your wits. In a role that catapulted her to international stardom, Nicole Kidman plays a young wife who's joined her husband (Sam Neill) on a yachting trip to recover from the tragic death of their son. Far out to sea, they encounter a sinking ship with one survivor (Billy Zane, ten years before Titanic), but inviting him aboard turns out to be a very bad mistake. While Neill attempts to salvage the sinking boat, Kidman is fighting for her life against the psychotic Zane--a villain so creepy that you eagerly look forward to his demise. By the time that moment arrives director Phillip Noyce has resorted to a typical slasher-movie climax (proving that no boat should be without a flare gun), but until then Dead Calm is a nail-biting thriller that's guaranteed to keep you in a state of nail-biting suspense. To accommodate the widescreen compositions on the open ocean, the DVD offers the film in its original 2.35:1 aspect ratio. --Jeff Shannon

Description

A suspense thriller about a husband and wife, recovering from a personal tragedy, who encounter a stranger while cruising their boat in the Pacific and become ensnared in a drama of mystery, high emotions and extreme danger.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Dedicated Wife.......2007-04-11

You never hear much about this movie when people speak of Nicole Kidman I think this is one her very best roles, she is sweet, dedicated and a true heroine. She is cute in the movie as the wife who never gives up trying to save her husband and she never loses her temper being the victim she keeps her calm..................

4 out of 5 stars A fine little thriller........2007-04-03

This movie may not have cost a bundle to make, but none the less it was finely done and is a really tight well crafted psychological thriller. Many weeks out to sea Nicole Kidman and her Husband help a stranded gentleman in a sinking ship. The man ,Billy Zane, is a paranoid delusional who is extremely dangerous. Situations take a turn for the worse when Husband and wife get separated, and Nicole Kidman gets stuck with the madman. The movie keeps you interested and you find yourself rooting for Nicole. The ending is a bit over the top, but still a most enjoyable ride.

1 out of 5 stars Boring.......2007-03-24

I watched this movie with my fiancee last night, and it was disappointing. We started watching the clock after about twenty minutes, asking "Is this over yet?" The actors themselves aren't bad, but the dialogue they were given to work with was pretty bad, cliche, overcooked, etc. The fact that the husband and wife were split up and effectively had separate stories for most of the movie was a pretty cool idea, but I was never invested enough in either character to really care.

4 out of 5 stars Seaworthy thriller.......2007-03-17

Alone on an ocean sailing trip to recuperate after the death of their son, a husband and wife (Sam O'Neill and Nicole Kidman) find themselves in a battle of wits against an insane killer (Billy Zane) who they rescue from the sea. The great majority of the film revolves around these three characters, and the actors generate some real tension, particularly Kidman and Zane, since O'Neill is alone on a sinking boat for much of the time. The tense stand-off between wife and killer and the husband's struggle to avoid drowning are effective counterpoints.

The subplot about the dead son never figures in the film after the extraneous prologue, and there are some classic dunderhead horror film cliches (ie, the killer who won't stay dead and the victim who doesn't shoot the killer when she can), but this remains an entertaining film.

5 out of 5 stars dead bang to rights.......2007-03-12

Just a wonderful movie that will make you think, keep you mildly interested and overall, a good spend of 90 minutes. Filmed before anyone really knew any of these actors, they do a fine job of keeping you suspended during the life of the film. Not a great movie but certainly entertaining enough.

When the theatrical release of James Cameron's <I>Titanic</I> was delayed from July to December of 1997, media pundits speculated that Cameron's $200 million disaster epic would cause the director's downfall, signal the end of the blockbuster era, and sink Paramount Studios as quickly as the ill-fated luxury liner had sunk on that fateful night of April 14, 1912. Some studio executives were confident, others horrified, but the clarity of hindsight turned Cameron into an Oscar-winning genius, a shrewd businessman, and one of the most successful directors in the history of motion pictures. <I>Titanic</I> would surpass the $1 billion mark in global box-office receipts (largely due to multiple viewings, the majority by teenage girls), win 11 Academy Awards including best picture and director, produce the best-selling movie soundtrack of all time, and make a global superstar of Leonardo DiCaprio. A bona fide pop-cultural phenomenon, the film has all the ingredients of a blockbuster (romance, passion, luxury, grand scale, a snidely villain, and an epic, life-threatening crisis), but Cameron's alchemy of these ingredients proved more popular than anyone could have predicted. His stroke of genius was to combine absolute authenticity with a pair of fictional lovers whose tragic fate would draw viewers into the heart-wrenching reality of the <I>Titanic</I> disaster. As starving artist Jack Dawson and soon-to-be-married socialite Rose DeWitt Bukater, DiCaprio and Kate Winslet won the hearts of viewers around the world, and their brief but never-forgotten love affair provides the humanity that Cameron needed to turn <I>Titanic</I> into an emotional experience. Present-day framing scenes (featuring Gloria Stuart as the 101-year-old Rose) add additional resonance to the story, and although some viewers proved vehemently immune to Cameron's manipulations, few can deny the production's impressive achievements. Although some of the computer-generated visual effects look artificial, others--such as the sunset silhouette of <I>Titanic</I> during its first evening at sea, or the climactic splitting of the ship's sinking hull--are state-of-the-art marvels. In terms of sets and costumes alone, the film is never less than astounding. More than anything else, however, the film's overwhelming popularity speaks for itself. <I>Titanic</I> is an event film and a monument to Cameron's risk-taking audacity, blending the tragic irony of the <I>Titanic</I> disaster with just enough narrative invention to give the historical event its fullest and most timeless dramatic impact. <I>Titanic</I> is an epic love story on par with <I>Gone with the Wind</I>, and like that earlier box-office phenomenon, it's a film for the ages. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars i loved it.......2007-03-02

I WISH I COULD GIVE THIS MOVIE 10 STARS. UNLIKE THE REST OF MY FRIENDS I SAW THIS MOVIE FOR THE FIRST TIME NOT TOO LONG AGO( A WEEK OR 2). I LOVED IT SO MUCH I VE WATCHED IT EVERYNIGHT SINCE THEN(NOT EVERY LAST PART CUS ITS A LONG MOVIE, BUT MOST OF IT)!

ITS FULL OF ROMANCE.MOST PEOPLE SAY THEY DONT LIKE IT BECAUSE THEY KNOW WHATS GONNA HAPPEN BUT DONT LISTEN TO THEM. BUY THIS MOVIE! I USED MY DADS COPY AND I LIKED IT SO MUCH I M GOING TO BUY MY OWN(HE DOESNT LIKE ME USIN HIS MOVIES)!.

p.s- I KNO THE TITANIC REALLY SANK AND BLABLABLA(REST IN PEACE) BUT WERE JACK AND ROSE REALLY PASSENGERS, OR DID THEY JUST THROW THEM IN 2 MAKE IT GOOD?

3 out of 5 stars sappy.......2007-02-17

i like anything to do with titanic, and i love the graphics, but the characters are pretty annoying, especially jack. the characters aren't beleivable, and rose, sixteen years old, is way to mature (both physically and mentally) for her age. I'm 15 years old; i should know this. they tuned what could have been a moving story about the greatest ship of all time but they had to ruin it and make it into a sappy love story.

5 out of 5 stars Titanic.......2007-02-14

This is the best movie EVER!!!! If I could, I would give it WAY MORE stars than five. But I can't so...I'll just have to settle with five. I absolutely LOVE Titanic...very much. I've seen it many, many times...I've lost count of how many times, but I've watched it a lot. I've been totally obsessed with Titanic even before the movie came out...and I was only five when the movie came out. And yes, I did watch a PG13 movie at the age of five. My entire family is tired of the movie because they have been forced to watch it so much. I've also made my friends watch it if they haven't seen it before. I say that they're crazy if they haven't see Titanic yet. But me? I never get tired of it, and I never will :)I definitely recommend this movie to everyone.

Now. About the movie.... :)

Titanic is about two young people from two completely different classes falling in love. Jack Dawson, traveling in third class by using a free ticket, is, needless to say, a poor young artist, who wins a ticket to go to America on Titanic by playing poker.
Rose De Witt Bukater is a first class passenger, traveling thanks to her fiance, Caledon "Cal" Hockley. She is traveling with her mother, who is pushing her hard to marry Hockley, no matter how much she doesn't want to. But it only took one moment for everything to change.
From the first moment that Jack Dawson laid his eyes on her, he knew that he loved Rose. They met when Rose was...well, when she was about to make a bad decision. From there on, they started as friends. But soon, their friendship turned to more than just being friends--it turned to love. Titanic is not only a movie about the forbidden love between Jack and Rose, but also about those who lost their lives that tragic night, April 15, 1912, when Titanic sank.

Okay...I know I put facts in there along with the review. Sorry. But hey. Now ya know some Titanic facts. :) Anyway. I think everyone should see this movie because it is totally awesome and I definitely recommend it.

Director John Singleton (Boyz N the Hood, Rosewood) made an earnest effort in this, his second, film to say a great deal that is true and relevant about living and loving in a violent, difficult time in American history. Janet Jackson plays a beautician and poet who withdraws into herself after her boyfriend is murdered by gangsters. The late Tupac Shakur plays a postman who tries to get through to her, and the two travel on a course through urban America, connecting with family and community. Singleton has so much on his mind that the film comes out a terrible muddle, but there is a certain integrity peeking through the fog. Shakur makes a startlingly good impression in his film debut, and Jackson strips away her star veneer to play something like a real person--and entirely succeeds. Maya Angelou wrote the poems that pass as those penned by Jackson's character, and she also appears in the film. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars Realler than most.......2007-05-03

This is a great movie. Shows real life, the difficulties trying to communicate to the opposite sex. and growing up with the struggles of everyday life.

Someone wrote terrible movie and Lucky acts like a dog. . .but if you watch the whole thing and understand it. Here is a guy stuck with a girl he is into, already uneasy from earlier. and the only way to get her attention is to call her names. The frustration should of been apparent.
I would say this is one of Tupac's best works on film. His skill only got better as he matured. But since he was so young. He did a good job. And unlike what was said before, he was acting. He wasnt playing himself. Only someone who listen to the media and news reports to make that judgment, would say that. Then to turn around and praise Janet, for her acting cause of her life experiences? that just dont make sense. She did a good job. I think the Poem was too mature for her character. Maybe it would of been better served if she was older and reminiscing on the trip. But it was a little too much for her.

THe rest of the cast is good. Joe Torry, Regina King and Tone Loc are all great. Showing the everday life, and the struggles trying to survive day to day, and connect with someone.

Better than a Hood Movie, its a great Coming of age/ love story. Its more realistic than most.

5 out of 5 stars Janet Jackson at her best!!!!.......2007-02-14

The film Poetic Justice to me is a great one. The first time I saw this film, I fell in love with it, especially the characters. Janet's character, Justice, struck a chord in me. She went through a lot, but she also gained strength. Tupac's character, Lucky, I fell in love with him. Chicago, what an idiot, and Regina King's character, Iesha, interesting. This film is a good one, and I loved it. One of my favorite films of all time!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Movie - Bad DVD Release........2006-09-24

I want to start by saying that I didn't see this film when it was first released. I saw it when it came on t.v. one night in '98 or '99. Anyways, I enjoyed the film and I believe it parallels what life is like for many people. Althought I intially saw the the t.v. edit, my feeling about the film only deepened when I bought the tape, and later the DVD. (I do have the original artwork on my DVD cover BTW.)

While I buy Janet's portrayl as Justice, in my opinion, it is Tupac who steals the show. Whether or not he is playing himself, it works. I also buy Regina Kings' performance. She is the ignorant and careless friend That I have tried to save from herself.

While the film does go in many directions and leave me with many unanswered questions, for me real-life isn't much different. There's something in this film that I relate to and whenever I want to escape from my own life for a while, this is one of the films I turn to.

I gave it 4 stars because the DVD itself is lacking. I would have given it 3 stars, but it has Directors' Commentary, which is something I enjoy. :o) I also apreciate the addition of the subtitles, but I would have really loved to see a small documentary or even reflections on the film from Miss Jackson, Regina King - Anyone! And I can't believe there's not even one deleted scene. Pitiful. . .

4 out of 5 stars Shot out to Dennis and Michael...two idiots. .......2006-08-08

1. to Michael: Lucky blames Justice because he was late to Oakland because of the time them two spent on the beach (then he realizes that he was just mad at the time and apologizes to her...

to Dennis (who said "at least Tupac is dead"): may Tupac Amaru Shakur rest in peace..God bless his soul. Some people who just don't understand..but the acting was great...you probably just think it's exaggerated cuz you are ignorant and you haven't seen this type of hood drama. It was actually a very real and accurate account of problems that these type of communities face..and how people actually act (fights in relationships, disrespect between men and women. Lucky was treating Justice in a disrespectful manner..but that is just an accurate portrayal of how men in the hood don't know how to come at a woman that he's interested in..so they just trip.

To all of those good-hearted people who would not bless the death of no-one...and who understand or are open-minded to learn about what life really is like for some people..and the emotioins and pain and joy that they feel ....check out this great movie.

Thank you John Singleton for brightening a day in my life..the day that I chose to rent this movie. Thank you for your honesty in portraying what life is like.

Peace-

2 out of 5 stars Just an awful movie!.......2006-07-04

I am a big fan of Janet Jackson and Tupac's music. However, they are both awful in the boring movie! Tupac is a dog towards women and treats Jackson terribly but she is attracted to him. The two spend the day riding around in his mail truck (he is a mailman in this one) and you can virtually go to sleep and not really miss anything important.

If you want to see Tupac, I suggest some of the action films he made. Jackson is definately not the cute little girl from Good Times in this film. Just an awful movie.

3 out of 5 stars Bloodrayne (Unrated Director's Cut)(DVD ROM game is included).......2007-05-13

This movie is not for the avid Blood Rayn game playing fan this movie has nothing to do as far as plot and story line goes considering the vidio game, However this peticular Eddition comes with the sequal computer Game to the first Blood Rayn Vidio Game and the Game Rates 5 Stars if you can deal with haveing to remember all the key command or buying the game play computer Controller. the game has excellent graphics. If you however have not plade the game then prepair yourself for good acting and greate Leading Charicter with all the Gore you can handle but what it has in gore it lacks in plot.

1 out of 5 stars eeek!.......2007-05-07

What a joke. I guess few of the "stars" decided over a dubie to make this movie. And probably filmed it during the weekend. Hilarious action scenes. Oh, they also used tons of make up just for the sake of gore. Skip it and save your money.

1 out of 5 stars Horrid.......2007-04-16

Ok, quickly and without hesitation, click the `Back' button on your web browser as many times as it takes to get completely get away from seeing anything that has to do with this movie.

If you didn't heed my advice above, then you are obviously into watching train wrecks, ten car pileups and little kids frying ants with their magnifying glass. In other words, you're a cinematic sadist. If you've already seen this movie, then you've probably lost some self esteem. If you plan on seeing it after you read this review...you're just a masochist.

Bloodrayne is horrible. Beyond horrible. Ben Kingsley has made some bad career choices in his day but this one takes the cake. Michael Madsen, who used to be considered respectable if not great, is heading down the career failing slope faster than a California mudslide after a monsoon. Michelle Rodriguez, who has openly stated she wants to be a gypsy actress, a free spirit, is the most unscathed simply because you're going to limit yourself with that kind of career decision. That doesn't get her off the hook for this travesty. I can't imagine anyone as rebellious as her standing quietly while this heap of crud was being dumped around her like garbage at a landfill. And then there's Kristana Loken...well, you get to see her nude. That's about the highlight of her role. And what the hell is Meatloaf doing in this movie...and credited by his FULL name?! He picked this atrocity to decide he wants to be credited with TWO names instead of ONE? HUH?!

Everyone else is unknown, which surprisingly doesn't leave many roles left for the unknowns. It was amazing how they amassed this group of named actors for something so horribly bad. It's not just the actors, it's the dialogue, the F/X and the even the plot...which escapes me for the moment. I guess I'm trying to remove this movie from my memory. So do yourself a favor and stay away, stay far, far away. Trust me, it's for your own good.

3 out of 5 stars Just as well they included the game.......2007-04-13

So many bad reviews and so much adverse comment as to the skills of Uwe Boll, was it deserved ? I'm afraid the answer is largely yes, this film is patchy in the extreme, truly laden with clichés and in common with most game derived movies seems to have been written by somebody with only a passing knowledge of the game. Which is pretty silly as BloodRayne the game doesn't exactly have the most complex plot ever seen. For example in the game Rayne a Dhampir is searching for her father, the setting is Europe in the nineteen thirties, she is located and hired by the Brimstone society and then goes on a series of missions recovering three artefacts from the Thule Society.
For reasons that remain unexplained the film decided to run as a prequel and being scripted as a predictable cliché is set in that mythical eastern Europe beloved of Hammer and all the old Dracula movies. There Rayne is looking for her father and is found and trained by the Brimstone society, presumably they mutually forget each other and the later game setting meeting is an amnesiacs reunion. In common with the game Rayne searches for the artefacts of Beliar, though these would appear to be somewhat different to the game versions she searches out later, presumably some kind of generic naming system for supernatural items. If you're going to do a prequel at least make it imaginative, why swipe bits from the game and take them out of context? It's lazy means nothing to non gamers and will only irritate the game fans who are the core audience. Rayne acquires two artefacts and we are told becomes incredibly powerful, though the special effects budget clearly doesn't run to anything that could demonstrate this. She then gets to enter her fathers castle and kill him, another sign of memory loss perhaps as having exterminated dear old dad, one wonders why she spends the next century or so looking for him, or how he crops up in the game BloodRayne 2. Still not to get bogged down in details, lets look at the film as it stands. As I've already said it's clichéd, oldie worldie eastern European settings and a plot that creaks. A massive and pointless overdose of dismemberment, luridly blood splattered and all very badly done, poorly choreographed and filmed fight scenes, the list goes on. Then we look at the actors, Madsen and Rodriguez are fine in their comfort zone as urban Americans with attitude, take them out of the zone and their limitations are painfully obvious, they just do not fit into this scenario and utter some of the most painfully stilted lines ever committed to film. Kristanna Locken isn't the worlds greatest actor, but at least she tries, which is more than can be said for the Oscar winning Sir Ben Ghandi Kingsley who's performance is so wooden it's teak like, a man who is clearly hating every moment of the shoot, has no idea why he signed the contract and wants everybody to know what a bad time he's having. Instead of dark and brooding, his head vampire just comes over as constipated. It's not a good movie, but given time may acquire a bit of cult cachet as one of those bad movies you need to see.
And yet despite all this I'm not spitting blood at money wasted and that's because the set includes a DVD copy of BloodRayne 2 the game and to be honest that's what I was after in the first place. I think packing the two together is a good idea and one that other game film teams should consider taking up.

2 out of 5 stars Not what I expected...........2007-04-10

I was very disappointed with this movie and it was horribly done. I understand that it is difficult to make a movie based off of a video game and that this movie wasn't widely released but still... it could have been a lot better. The movie had a great cast but unfortunately that wasnt' enough to save it. The action sequences looked staged, wooden in appearance so there wasn't any believability. The acting was overdone and over the top in some scenes and combined with bad accents it just gave the whole movie a cheesy feeling. I am a fan of the video game and a fan of movies but this one just sucked. I felt like I was watching a really bad made for t.v. movie.
