Description
Rosalind Russell recreates her hallmark stage role as the accentric grande dame of highlife, briging up a 10-year-old nephew. A banquet of laughter, nominated for 6 Academy Awards(R).
Amazon.com
Remember darlings, "Life's a banquet, and most suckers are starving to death." That tag line sums up this exuberant and immensely amusing 1958 comedy that can be seen repeatedly, as it never grows stale. Rosalind Russell plays the flamboyant aunt who takes in poor, orphaned Patrick, played with sophisticated ease by Jan Handzlik. Mame, all glitter and martinis, raises her nephew in a world filled with acceptance and her oddball literati friends. Nothing is too bohemian. This unfolds in colorful episodic segments that allow us to watch Patrick grow as Mame oversees his unusual upbringing while she juggles a few spouses and an extended household. Russell, who created the title role for the stage, simply shines. She is bright and brassy, but never goes too far over the top. Peggy Cass is a comedic delight as her befuddled secretary, and Coral Browne brings class to the production as her best friend. This was based on the exuberant stage play, which in turn was based on Patrick Dennis's humorous, bittersweet novel. The screen version was written by the clever duo of Betty Comden and Adolph Green. Not to be confused with the pathetically lackluster musical version starring Lucille Ball (1974), simply entitled <I>Mame</I>. <I>--Rochelle O'Gorman</I>
Customer Reviews:
LOVE IT STILL!!!.......2007-04-11
I love this movie. I saw it several years ago along with Mame (starring Lucielle Ball) and loved both for very different reasons. My older kids (aged 15 and 17) are into school play ans musicals so I got it for them to see and they both loved it. They laughed through the whole thing. Rosalind Russell is an amazing woman who brings Auntie Mame to life from the pages of Patrick Dennis' book and everyone is able to associate Mame Dennis with that one member of every family who is a bit eccentric.
Auntie Mame should be a beloved member of everyone's DVD Library.......2007-03-23
Rosalind Russell gives a powerhouse performance (nominated for Best Actress, but lost to Susan Hayward in "I Want to Live") in a sparkling, sophisticated, laugh-a-minute classic that should be required viewing for everyone at least once a year!
Auntie Mame - Great Video.......2007-03-17
This DVD replaced our VHS tape which had faded. It provides excellent picture, very good sound and many extras all on a non-fade media. We are very pleased and consider the purchase a very good value.
You'll be mamed from side-splitting comedy! (recommended).......2007-02-25
Where do I begin? AUNTIE MAME traverses so much subject matter within 2 hours and 36 minutes that if you get up for a snack you are likely to believe a different movie came on when you return. Get prepared to laugh from the moment gregarious AUNTIE MAME (Rosalind Russell) meets her articulate queer sounding nephew Patrick Dennis (Jan Handzlik). Through the years she redecorates her New York apartment, changes careers, reals from untold wealth to the depths of the Great Depression while keeping her chin up. Now matter how far she falls, Mame Dennis seems to always land on her feet (which can't always be said for her accomplices). Don't drink any liquid beverages as Mame makes her on-stage theatre appearance or vies for a Texas suitor by feigning horseback riding proficiency.
Russell is no stranger to comedy. She adroitly traded barbs with Cary Grant in HIS GIRL FRIDAY and chattered incessantly in THE WOMEN. However, AUNTIE MAME is the funniest performance I've seen yet!
Movie quote: "That's a B. It's the first letter of a seven-letter word that means your late father."
My Favourite Aunty........2007-01-29
Just a Great Old Movie, everybody loves Aunty Mame she was just so adorable.

Not bad for the money.......2007-06-08
While this pack isn't worthy of a 5 star rating, it's still a good value. Some of these titles I had purchased earlier at a cost of $5.00 a piece. The quality is not great, but they're watchable.
From or To.......2007-05-15
Clearly escape, but as Isaac Asimov said, 'There is escape from and escape to'.
These mostly awkward speculations do take you imaginative places. What more could you ask?
50 Flicks of Public Domain Goodness.......2007-04-27
SciFi Classics is a collection of 50 movies that have only one thing in common: they are all public domain and as such it is possible for them to be presented in highly affordable collections. I paid $21.99 for my set and that comes down to about 44 cents per movie. The way that movie tickets cost nowadays, you really cannot complain about this collection.
Anyways, here is how I rate the movies in SciFi Classics:
Good:
The Amazing Transparent Man
Assignment: Outer Space
Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylon
Hercules Unchained
Killers From Space
Laser Mission
Lost Jungle
Phantom From Space
The Phantom Planet
Planet Outlaws
Queen of the Amazons
The Wasp Woman
Zontar, the Thing From Venus
Average:
Colossus and the Amazon Queen
First Spaceship On Venus
Horrors of Spider Island
Robot Monster
She Gods of Shark Reef
They Came From Beyond Space
Voyage to the Prehistoric Planet
Voyage to the Planet of Prehistoric Women

Bad:
The Astral Factor
Attack of the Monsters
The Atomic Brain
Battle of the Worlds

Cosmos: War of the Planets
Crash of the Moons

All in all, an incredible bargain.
On a 1 to 10 scale, this collection is rated: 3.2.......2007-03-31
SCI-FI CLASSICS COLLECTION is an eclectic mix of hokey science fiction and fantasy, with a sprinkling of action films (of the sandals and swords variety). One commonality here is the typically low score all fifty of these "classics" got from users of a film-related website. On a one to ten scale, the current average for this set calculates out to: 3.2.
Scoring is relevant only to plot, editing, effects, etc, and doesn't consider stock condition or audio/video transfer quality. This multi-pack may only be for the most ardent of sci-fi/fantasy fans, as well as lovers of well-aged cheese.

More impressed with this bunch than the "horror" set we purchased.........2007-03-20
My husband and I enjoyed watching this 50 CD collection set 3 times a week before bedtime. We've watched all of the movies except the Hercules titles (why bother - we didn't watch them in the 60s either). Most of the movies were in good shape and fun to watch. The transfer quality was good. A much better collection than the Horror 50 CD collection. It was interesting to see the mix of countries that made SciFi movies back in the 50s and 60s and their interpretation of space travel and what's out there. Some of the foreign movies were a little too long as the story dragged on and on. There were a few we didn't bother to finish, e.g., Eegah, Gammera, the Invincible. The Astral Factor was in color with Elke Sommers. The story had an ending that didn't really explain the plot, but it was entertaining and did a good job putting us to sleep as did most of these movies. Have fun watching them and remember they are old B films mostly.

Amazon.com essential video
The Crow set the standard for dark and violent comic-book movies (like Spawn or director Alex Proyas's superior follow-up, Dark City), but it will forever be remembered as the film during which star Brandon Lee (son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee) was accidentally killed on the set by a loaded gun. The filmmakers were able to digitally sample what they'd captured of Lee's performance and piece together enough footage to make the movie releasable. Indeed, it is probably more fascinating for that post-production story than for the tale on the screen. The Crow is appropriately cloaked in ominous expressionistic shadows, oozing urban dread and occult menace from every dank concrete crack, but it really adds up to a simple and perfunctory tale of ritual revenge. Guided by a portentous crow (standing in for Poe's raven), Lee plays a deceased rock musician who returns from the grave to systematically torture and kill the outlandishly violent gang of hoodlums who murdered him and his fiancée the year before. The film is worth watching for its compelling visuals and genuinely nightmarish, otherworldly ambience. --Jim Emerson

Customer Reviews:
Amazing........2007-06-02
First time I saw this film, I watched it on VHS. Not that great. It was extremely dark and I had a hard time seeing things. I popped in the DVD and WOW! I could see what was going on! It's great. The story is beautiful, dark but powerful. I highly recommend this film. Especially this eddition.
classic.......2007-05-27
1994 saw the release of Alex Proyas' cult-classic "The Crow". The plot of the film is pretty straightforward; a vigilante killer, one year after the murder of himself and his girlfriend, goes out for revenge. In terms of the plot there aren't a lot of twists and the film is, dare I say...predictable...You know exactly how the film will unfold twenty minutes into it. Apart from the fact the vigilante has risen from the dead, movies with similar plots have been done before. Still, almost immediately after its release, "the Crow" achieved cult-status, enjoying a large, dedicated following. Why is that, exactly?
One reason that "The Crow" has struck a nerve with people is its theme of love defying death. The reunion scene between Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) and Shelly Webster (Sofia Shinas) is one of most bittersweet moments in film that I can recall. The relationship between the "good" characters (and there are very few) is also quite touching. Sarah (Rochelle Davis) is a quite likeable kid and there is genuine warmth in her scenes with her dysfunctional mother, Lee and Sergeant Albrecht (Ernie Hudon).
Most of the thugs in this film, apart from "Top Dollar" (Michael Wincott) are pretty generic. They are so vile, however, that it's satisfying when Lee takes them all down. The dark atmosphere, (dark streets, urban decay, cemeteries) cinematography, and action sequences are all quite exciting and well done.
Even if the film, at its core, (vigilante killer after bad guys) doesn't have the most original story line, the rich charectors, setting and themes of friendship and undying love more than make up for it. The abundance of excellent music (NIN, The Cure, RATM, there isn't a bad song on the soundtrack, infact) throughout the film is also a great bonus.
While Brandon Lee, sadly, never got a chance to really develop as an actor, his role of Eric Draven in this film no doubt ensures that his legacy has at least one classic.
Untitled.......2007-05-14
Received product very quickly and on time, and product was in very good condition... extremely satisfied with this order!
Must See.......2007-03-08
If you ever wanted to see the greatest movie of all times this it. Brandon Lee is by the far the best of all of the series. It is a shame that he had to die so young.
One of the Best Movies of the 1990's.......2007-02-28
It is a tragedy that Brandon Lee died while making this film. Had he lived, the Crow sequels would have been much better.
The Crow is an action packed movie that moves at a quick pace. It set the standard for the dark cinema of the 1990's.

While it suffered a nearly unanimous beating from critics, <I>The Girl Next Door</I> attracted more than a few loyal defenders during its brief box-office lifespan. It pales when compared to its teen-comedy role model (the 1983 classic <I>Risky Business</I>), but you've got to admit that <I>any</I> movie about a teenager whose new next-door neighbor is a 19-year-old former porn star has bona fide cult-movie potential. To its credit, this rather schizoid blend of sleaze and comedy boasts an engaging pair of costars in Emile Hirsch (as the smitten, voyeuristic virgin) and <I>24</I>'s Elisha Cuthbert (as his sexy new house-sitting neighbor). And there are some good laughs in a script that takes unexpected turns when we learn that Cuthbert's character is trying to leave her porn-star past behind, to the chagrin of her pimp-like producer (Timothy Olyphant, in a scene-stealing role). Faring somewhat better than he did with the Rob Schneider non-comedy <I>The Animal</I>, director Luke Greenfield clearly recalls the turbulence that goes hand-in-hand with being young, horny, and confused. There's honesty and even (dare we say it?) maturity to be found in this raging-hormone fantasy, even if it's partially buried in a convoluted plot that's appalling or appealing, depending on your tolerance for good-natured prurience. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Description
Eighteen-year-old Matthew Kidman (Emile Hirsch) is a straight-laced overachiever who has never really lived life - until he falls for his hot new neighbor (Elisha Cuthbert). When Matthew discovers his perfect "girl next door" is a former porn star, his sheltered existence spins out of control. It's "Risky Business" meets "American Pie" (Premiere Radio Networks) in this "titillating, laugh-out-loud funny comedy!" (US Weekly)
Customer Reviews:
Darker than I expected.......2007-06-15
When I picked up this movie, I was thinking it was going to a smutty comedy along the lines of American Pie / Risky Business / Porky's. It turned out to be a bit darker than I expected, with some not so funny parts and some downright grim realities coupled in with it.
Matt is a stereotypical "nice guy" who has an ordinary high school career, not very popular, not very exciting, and a bit on the dull side. One day, a beautiful girl moves in next door and he is smitten. Much to his surprise, he discovers Danielle is a 19 year old former adult film star. That is, she's every horny teenage boy's dream come true. She's running away from the life, and doesn't want anything to do with it anymore. But she's being stalked by ghosts from the past, her manager is looking to make his investment back and he'll stop at nothing to get her back into his movies. Soon he and his friends propose making their own movie to pay him off once and for all, and even offer some of the other popular boys to be in it. They get many offers, and suddenly things are looking up for Matt.
What a movie like this says about our culture cannot possibly be summed up in a review like this. There are so many layers to this. The porn industry, while it seems exciting and glamourous on the outside, is really a horrifying place where women are mislead, abused, and intimidated into preforming. Danielle wants nothing else but to escape, and she's being stalked by the monsters who have lured her in. Matt sees her on one hand as his ultimate object of desire, and ends up falling for her. (Fiction!) Matt seems to be a nice guy, but he seems to hold this porn star girlfriend closer to him for the fact that she's a former porn star and not just "the girl next door".
Perhaps the most telling of events is when they are going to film the porn movie in the library of their school. When they talk the popular boys into doing it, they jump at the chance thinking that it will enhance their status. And the one who seems the biggest and strongest of them all can't preform. Stuck in the situation, Matt at first volonteers to be the one, but he can't do it. He loves Danielle too much to degrade her again. So his friend volonteers (the biggest laugh of the movie, when he appears on camera with the fencing mask on). And I had the best thought of the entire movie when he did that. I just thought "Wow, what a good friend". Perhaps that was the most noble thing of them all.
A Pleasant Surprise.......2007-05-30
I first rented this so that I would just kill some time. I was expecting a silly movie, but I was pleasantly surprised. I had to buy it. The acting is excellent and the ages of the actors is very close to the ages of the characters. This is a teenage movie for adults. It has its crazy moments, but in the end it's a love story.
I'm glad that it didn't do well at the box office. If it did, a sequel would been made.
Awesome Flick for fans of John Hughes and 80's Growing Up movies!.......2007-05-24
So one night when the wife was away i decided to bring some easy on the eyes, hollywood pap, home with me from the video store where i worked. I picked the girl next door based purely on the picture on the cover. I didn't want something too involving. I had seen the trailer some time before and it seemed to be an 'American Pie' kind of movie....
Well, i was wrong. I sat in amazement the whole length of the movie, dumbfounded that it was so good. SO GOOD!. It takes alot of it's influence from another of my favorites, Risky Business. It's not a remake and it's not a sequel. it's more of an homage. It's far better than if it were a remake. It really is just a joy to watch. I told my wife about it when she got back, and she kind of rolled her eyes and said 'yeah, okay, lets watch it'. An hour and a half later of staring, jaw dropped, at the screen, she turned to me and said just one word: "GENIUS!"
Really, it's up there with Risky Business and Ferris Buellers Day Off. It's a movie about growing up that we can all relate to. This is the kind of movie that changes a persons perspective on life. Amazing cast. Amazing SoundTrack! All over, great film!
The politically correct girl next door........2007-04-23
This movie never gets off the ground, due to "political correctness", i did see it's potential wasted in almost every scene.every scene had the chance to become outragesly funny but never takes off. theres almost no nudity, none by the female lead at all, all punchline and no joke with this movie. typical politically correct movie for these days.
unexpected.......2007-03-10
You might think from the title and the commercials this movie is about a super sexy porn star slut...but it's actually the opposite. I really liked how the movie was done to portray the struggles some girls really have to go through in their carrers and mixed it with the toughness of high school.
This is definately a movie i would reccomend to people over like 16 but only if you want to watch a funny movie about the discovering and strength of two people...This movie is the real thing, i enjoyed it and i think many other people could too.

Tyrin Turner may not have broken out into stardom as was initially expected, but his work in <I>Menace II Society</I> is one of the more powerful cinematic debuts. The film, from the brother writer-director team of Allen and Albert Hughes, chronicles life in the Los Angeles 'hood. Similar territory was covered in the equally commanding <I>Boyz N the Hood</I>, but what makes this cautionary tale stand out is not only the Hughes brothers' forceful story, (written with their friend, Tyger Williams) and direction, but the naturalness of then-newcomer leads Turner as Caine, Larenz Tate as O-Dog, and Jada Pinkett as Ronnie. They are so credible--occasionally frighteningly so--that the repressive universe of violent ghetto life is captured effectively. Life as portrayed here--and no doubt accurately so--is both figuratively and literally narrow. As a very young boy, Caine witnesses his dad murdered over something inconsequential, and his mom OD. His is a world where respect comes from intimidation, power from violence. Despite his understanding of right and wrong (values passed on by a good friend, his kind grandparents, a caring teacher), his life and its entrapments are too much to overcome. <I>--N.F. Mendoza</I>

even if you don't like it, wait until the last scene..........2007-05-08
...it'll be worth it. i won't go into details, but that chilling image that the hughes brothers crafted was probably one of the best pieces of cinema i've ever seeen. even after seeing a number of times, it still gets me. having said all that though, do check out the movie for its performances, particularly larenz tate's, belivability, and overall message.
A Hood Classic for sure................................2007-04-19
The shock and horror of urban violence pierces through screen on this movie.
Stunning Depiction of Life In the Hood.......2007-04-18
This film is the best of it's type for stunning realism and incredible performances from all the main characters. Set in 1990's LA, the film captures the gangsta life and the tragic circumstances that young people deal with that make every decision so consequential for how their lives ultimately turn out. What seperates the movie from the rest of this type is the characters. Despite the seeming random violence the viewer can't help but care about these kids and hope they find a way out.
Unauthorized bigraphy is what it felt like.......2007-04-04
This is by far one of my favorite movies. I do not however own the DVD version of the film.
Actually I am lucky to own the VHS version. You see one night while I was sleeping an ex-girlfriend decided to assault me with my VHS copy of the film Seven staring Brad Pitt and a human head.
I awoke to the tape bouncing off my noggin...when I realized what was going on it was too late for SEVEN, the tape had been pulled from the plastic rectangle and all I could do was jump to my feet to see what was happening outside my bedroom. What I stumbled upon was pure horror!
The soon to be ex had my copy (my most prized movie possession) of Menace to Society in her clutches and was about to begin dismantling the movie I had come to love. I bolted forward and grabbed the tape from her and escorted her away from the property.
Now most of you may not see this review as a review of the movie, but having a crazy woman try to break your most prized possessions and twarting her efforts on Round 2 (since she won Round 1 with Seven...a film I didn't particularly care for, but stole fair and square from a buddy we call Lunch Box) is a victory for me.
I mean I liked the movie so much I chose it over a woman. And it was the grainy VHS version that needed to be replaced and was outdated anyway.
The Real Thug Life.......2007-01-15
A truly groundbreaking film about the harsh realities of life on the streets and hustling in the ghettos, 1993's "Menace II Society" gives us a poignant look at what can happen when wrong choices are made and when redeeming one's self is too late. This film also magnifies the pressures that many young African Americans must deal with on a daily basis.
Meet Caine Lawson (a brilliant performance from Tyrin Turner). As a boy in the Watts, California hood with his heroin addict mother and murdering drug dealer father Tat (Samuel L. Jackson), was it any wonder that Caine would become drawn to a similar lifestyle? When his parents die, Caine is sent to live with his grandparents. Fresh out of high school, Caine hits the streets as a drug hustler trying to make money for expensive cars to attract the ladies and to take care of Ronnie (Jada Pinkett-Smith) and Anthony, the family of his childhood role model Pernell who is in prison. It is a struggling situation between family/role model man, and the lure of the streets for Caine. Despite the preaching from his grandfather, trouble is always around the corner for Caine, especially when he's with his best friend O-Dog (a very convincing performance from (Larenz Tate), who is basically a don't give a f**k ticking time bomb waiting to explode. Besides being involved in a fatal convenience store shooting and being stalked by the police, Caine also struggles to keep himself alive. When his cousin gets killed and he himself gets shot, Caine realizes after talking with Ronnie that he needs to make a fresh start in life before it's too late. Traveling to Atlanta with her and Anthony may be the only thing that would save him. But there's no fighting the lure of street trouble; selling drugs, getting into mischief of O-Dog and the gang, getting back at the guys who killed his cousin and possibly impregnating a woman. But by the time Caine decides to go away with Ronnie and Anthony, his mistakes may have stirred up a hornet's nest that will come back to haunt him in the most tragic of ways. For Caine, it may be too late to redeem himself for good.
This movie is an eye-opener and sends a very harsh and true message about upbringing, lifestyles and choices. Boozing, drugs, shooting, attacking, cruising and all the while trying to survive, get respect and rise above, not to mention being a role model. These are just a few of the things that mirror inner city life. You can run from the streets, but the streets will always be in you. This is what Caine must face. Awesome funky hip-hip soundtrack and some serious intense acting make this movie great. The street-wise lingo, the clothes, the attitude; all this pulls the movie together. Special features include an in-depth interview with the Hughes twins who directed the film, as well as the theatrical trailer, and more. Watch the film, get engrossed and recognize!

Is there anything scarier than clowns? Of course not. And who knows scary better than Stephen King? You see where we're going. <I>It</I> puts a malevolent clown (given demented life by a powdered, red-nosed Tim Curry) front and center, as King's fat novel gets the TV-movie treatment. Even at three hours plus, the action is condensed, but an engaging <I>Stand by Me</I> vibe prevails for much of the running time. The seven main characters, as adolescents, conquered a force of pure evil in their Maine hometown. Now, the cackling Pennywise is back, and they must come home to fight him--or, should we say, It--again. Admitting the TV-movie trappings and sometimes hysterical performances, this is a genuinely gripping thriller. As so often with King, the basic idea (the bond formed during a childhood trauma) is clean and powerful, a lifeline anchored in reality that leads us to the supernatural. <I>--Robert Horton</I>
Description
Based on the King Of Horror's 1986 Best Seller, "It" is a jittery, jolting excursion into personal fear. "It" raises goosebumps-and brings out the stars. Harry Anderson, Dennis Christopher, Annette O'Toole, Tim Reid, John Ritter, Tim Curry and Richard Thomas star in this thriller about a malevolent force in a small New England town.
Customer Reviews:
Simply Awful.......2007-06-24
"IT" is one of my favorite Stephen King novels. Naturally, I caught the movie. Most movie adaptions pale in comparison to their source, but this one takes the cake. The acting is very, very bad and the film quality is cheap. It simply reeks of that made-for-TV feel and just isn't scary at all. The movie is so embarrassing that I'm surprised that the listed director isn't "Alan Smithee". Just read the book and avoid this at all costs.
A good thriller.......2007-06-19
A really good, thriller movie. I have always been afraid of clowns. (Even before watching this) Very bloody. An awesome plot. The charectors are grown people in Part 1 or 2 of the movie, I think. Then they have flashbacks to when they were kids, and IT use to haunt them. Only those 5 people can see it, and damage IT leaves.
IT'S a deal!.......2007-06-02
I can remember watching "It" as a child, and falling in love with the movie. As soon as I could, I bought it on video. When I'm bored, or there's nothing to watch on tv, I would put my tape it. After wearing it out to the point of no return, I went on the hunt for the DVD. Finding it at such a great price was a deal I couldn't refuse. I never realized how much I really destroyed my tape til I saw it on DVD. Thanx!
It.......2007-05-21
One of the best movies based on Stephen Kings books! When I first saw it it scared the hell out of me!!

Jim Morris, the real-life hero of <I>The Rookie</I>, has an inspirational story all but guaranteed to put a smile on anyone's face. Happily, this G-rated Disney drama, based on Morris's published memoir of the same title, is suitable for an all-ages audience. Blessed with an awesome fastball, Morris nursed dreams of pitching for Major League Baseball during his 20s; injuries and bad luck, however, forced him to give up hope and become a teacher and coach. Years later, pressed by students and colleagues to try out for "the Show" one more time, Morris discovered he still had a powerful arm, and he was signed by the Tampa Bay Devil Rays. <I>The Rookie</I> is at its best throughout this first chapter in Morris's midlife adventure, though the rest of the film finds fresh angles on more familiar baseball-movie conventions. Dennis Quaid is soulful and charismatic as Morris, perfect in his depiction of a man both thankful and startled that destiny has given one of the good guys his due. Appropriate for ages 4 and up. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Description
From the studio that brought you REMEMBER THE TITANS comes an inspirational film based on a true story. Jim Morris (Dennis Quaid), father, teacher, and high school coach, thought his dream was over. He'd had his shot playing baseball, blew out his shoulder, and retired without ever making it to the big leagues. Then, in 1999, Coach Morris made a fateful bet with his perpetually losing team. If they won the district championship, Morris -- who threw a 98 mph fastball -- would try out for the majors. The team went from worst to first, and Jim, living up to his end of the bargain, threw caution to the wind and was on the road to becoming the oldest rookie in the major leagues. This heartfelt, uplifting story about not giving up on your dreams will have everyone cheering.
Customer Reviews:
Never Grow Up.......2007-04-18
What a good movie. After having to call it quits due to a shoulder injury, Coach Jim Morris took another approach to baseball, coaching. After taking over a high school team in Texas, he made a promise to them. He told them that of they won districts, he would try out for a big league team.
After the districts were won, that only left Coach Morris with one thing to do, try out for the majors!
Nice formula movie.......2007-04-01
This is an affecting movie. Many of those who have loved and played basball in their teens has, even if only fleetingly, a question in the back of their minds. Could I make it in baseball? Obviously, very few do succeed in the quest to make the bigs. But lots of us wondered.
This movie is actually two movies in one. First, the local team, with no record of success over the past few years, starts off poorly. They make a deal with their coach (played by Randy Quaid) that if they win the district championship, he--who had once labored in the vineyards of minor league baseball before calling it quits--would attend a try out and try to attain his dream. Needless to say, things work out as you would expect.
Then, upon attending a try out, the coach throws harder than he ever did in his earlier minor league efforts. He goes from a mid-80 MPH fastball when he was younger to a 98 MPH fastball well into his thirties. Makes one wonder? However, this movie is based on a real life story; the real Jim Morris (played by Quaid), indeed, got to the major leagues.
Lots of emotional moments. Baseball afficianados will like this, even if it is formulaic. Others might not "get it," although it is an affecting movie on several levels (father-Morris as son, husband-wife, Morris as father-son).
All in all, worth watching. A lot of fun.
A wholesome family film.......2007-03-17
This is a good movie to watch with the whole family. It may also spark some interest in baseball for those not already interested. All in all the movie is entertaining, realistic and believable as far as families and emotions are concerned.
The Rookie Shines Like the Stars of Life.......2006-11-10
I feel that the Rookie is by far the best movie that I have ever seen. One cries with Quaid as he wrestles with his love of pitching and we feel the heart and soul that he puts into teaching and coaching, akin to the same "giving his all" to baseball. Quaid teaches all of us that true greatness isn't found in great success, but rather, in doing one's best at whatever task one is given to do. Quaid does this and is rewarded not only by success, but by the love and adulation of the many relationships that he has cultivated, even during the times when things weren't going so well for him!
Baseball lovers only........2006-10-27
If you don't enjoy baseball at all, then you won't enjoy this movie.

This likable 1976 comedy gently skewers the whole post- Rocky mania for movies about losers who find their mettle or salvation or purpose in life in competitive sport. Walter Matthau stars as a drunk who becomes manager of a pathetic little-league baseball team. When he brings in a talented girl pitcher (Tatum O'Neal), the crew have an actual chance at winning some games and maybe a championship. But director Michael Ritchie (Downhill Racer) undercuts the romance of it all with the team's foul-mouthed tendencies and Matthau's own decadent spin on mentor-coachdom. Similarly to Ritchie's wicked comedy Smile --which lampooned the fervor surrounding beauty pageants--The Bad News Bears pokes fun at another American institution. --Tom Keogh

Love it.......2007-05-19
Thanks for delivering what was promised. Totally satisfied and great fun going back to my childhood with this great movie :)
Its a baseball classic.......2007-03-08
My wife is not from the US and when I started talking more and more about baseball she watched this film with me. Now she understands. This is far better than the Billy Bob version. As a kid I loved this movie and as an adult I still do.
Rather excellent.......2007-02-24
Hollywood is still churning out films like this but they don't seem to be able to capture the simplicity and charm of this very likeable classic little movie. There really is nothing to it but its a little charming gem probably long since forgotten after being done over and over again. Kicking and Screaming, another good movie, springs to mind. It is interesting to note that Jackie Earl Haley has been nominated for a Best Supporting Actor Oscar for his role in the film Little Children. I am South African and have never played baseball but this movie was a nostalgic trip back to my childhood. It is to be cherished. What is refreshing is it does not get all moralistic in the end. The Bad News Bears starring Walter Matthau and Oscar-winner Tatum O' Neal is still a delightful film after all these years. Great acting all around from the supporting cast. This movie does have a good message at the end. This movie is a classic especially for those who loved playing little league baseball when they were a kid. You can't go wrong with this family classic, get The Bad News Bears today!
Shockingly Good.......2007-01-12
I watched this with my 12 year-old son and he immediately wanted to watch it again. 'The Bad News Bears' is an amazingly raw, unsentimental and brilliantly evocative little timepiece of a film. It's strange how a movie like this --so bursting with life and character-- seems almost like it came from another planet now. Today a film about this subject (a disastrously bad little league team turning their season and their self-esteem around) would be layered with mountains of horrible, sugary sentimental baloney and tarted up with overt sexuality. This film has none of that. It feels, instead, extremely real and also provides an amazing snapshot of American life in Southern California in the mid-seventies. It's like a kids movie made by John Cassavetes.
People over-use the term "forgotten classic" but this is it. 'The Bad News Bears' has the timelessness of baseball itself and is just as hard, raw, unforgiving and ultimately joyous.

Glamour girls Hilary and Haylie Duff (featured in <I>Lizzie McGuire</I> and <I>7th Heaven</I>, respectively) star as cosmetic heiresses Ava and Tanzie Marchetta, whose lives get turned upside down when their deceased father's company is accused of selling toxic products. Wouldn't you know it, Ava and Tanzie decide to go all <I>Erin Brockovich</I> and investigate. <I>Material Girls</I> should be awful--but it isn't. It's not a great film, it may not even be a good film, but it's more watchable than it has any right to be, thanks to the confident and thoughtful guiding hand of director Martha Coolidge (<I>Rambling Rose</I>, <I>Valley Girl</I>). It's hard to say exactly how a director can keep something like <I>Material Girls</I> from being as insipid as, say, <I>New York Minute</I>. Coolidge injects some hint of awareness of what it actually means to be poor, casts some surprising actors (like Anjelica Huston, <I>Prizzi's Honor</I>; Brent Spiner, <I>Star Trek: The Next Generation</I>; and Lukas Haas, <I>Brick</I>), and somehow makes the Marchetta sisters both vapid and sympathetic--all of which is some impressive cinematic alchemy. The result is the most enjoyable film of Hilary Duff's career. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

material girls.......2007-05-26
this film was brilliant i really enjoyed it. hilary was fantastic and so was her sister haylie really good film recomend it :D
A cool movie!.......2007-05-12
A really cool, funny video! I'll give it 4 stars, since its not Hilary's best movie, but it's worth too see!
Not as Pleasant as Getting Your Wisdom Teeth Pulled. .......2007-04-14
I really wanted to like this movie because I think the Duff sisters are cute and actually have some potential. This movie has nothing about it to offer additional points to that train of thought. Hilary and Hayley are two spoiled brats who lose all their money, then get it back--an obvious parody of the ditzola factor the Hilton sisters live for real. About as painful, stupid and empty as My Date with the President's Daughter (UGH!), the only redeeming thing about this vapid little teen chick flick is Anjelica Houston. For good teen flicks that are thoroughly enjoyable, I highly recommend 10 Things I Hate About You and the old 80s classic hit, John Hughes' Sixteen Candles. Where this movie is concerned, I wouldn't recommend it to your dog's fleas.
Not the best :-l.......2007-04-13
While I'm not a teen anymore, I still like to watch the occasional movie in this 'genre' (ones that appeal to the tween market) and I do normally like Hilary Duff but this was NOT GOOD.
Hilary was OK in this, but her sister was annoying. There were the odd funny moments here and there. The plot was OK (two rich kids lose their money and become broke, yet bounce back into riches again). It was mostly unbelievable, yet kind of cute if you are of the age that this was intended for. I think kids would like this, but I found it to be only average.
Same cookie cutter, but still cute.......2007-04-10
Okay, same story line, rich person gets too comfortable, someone else is running the show, makes mistakes, rich person has to have a reality check and fix the world and everyone is better off because of it. It was still a cute movie. Suggest you watch, but don't buy.

Like <I>The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement</I>, <I>Ice Princess</I> is a fairy tale for girls who dream about what they can be. Casey Carlyle (Michelle Trachtenberg of <I>Buffy the Vampire Slayer</I>) is a physics geek who discovers a mathematical formula for those tricky figure-skating jumps that her fellow high schoolers are performing. It's all part of her plan to nab a juicy college scholarship, but a funny thing happens on the way to Harvard: Casey decides that in the name of research she should try the jumps herself, and she discovers that not only does she have talent, she <I>likes</I> figure skating. Will she throw away her Ivy League dreams in favor of those frilly dresses? <I>Ice Princess</I> isn't a movie that will change the world, and it treads lightly on the downsides of the sport (it costs a lot of money, rivalries are bitter, careers are short, and long hours mean less time to party!); there's also more than one unfortunate reference to how skating makes Casey look "hot." But just as Casey says: "What's wrong with wanting to feel strong and graceful and beautiful?", what's wrong with a movie that lets people explore their options and make decisions for themselves? The on-ice action is believable, and Trachtenberg is especially appealing in the lead role. With Kim Cattrall as the snarling coach, Joan Cusack as Casey's anxious mom, Trevor Blumas as the light romantic interest, Hayden Panettiere as the rival, and champion skaters Michelle Kwan and Brian Boitano as themselves.<I>--David Horiuchi</I>
Description
From Walt Disney Pictures, the studio that brought you THE PRINCESS DIARIES, ICE PRINCESS is a hilarious and heartwarming coming-of-age story featuring popular teen star Michelle Trachtenberg (TV's BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER, EUROTRIP). Though she longs to become a graceful champion figure skater, gawky Casey Carlyle (Trachtenberg) has always been just a brainy high school misfit. And with a strong-willed mother (Joan Cusack -- RAISING HELEN) pushing her toward a top university, it seems as if she'll never get the chance to be like the elite skating prodigies she sees at the rink. But when Casey uses her head and follows her heart, she'll find herself transformed beyond her wildest dreams! Also starring Kim Cattrall, it's an uplifting and laugh-packed story your whole family will flip for!

Real Life Drama.......2007-03-27
A truly gifted person succeeds while her best friend is pushed forward by
her mother: frustrated, overbearing and non-successfull figure skater. She at last admits that her daughter's friend is truly gifted and she seems to be satisfied; her daughter no longer under pressure to succeed is very happy too and is finally able to do those things for which has yearned for lo these many years.
Surprisely good........2007-02-23
Ice Princess was a movie I didn't think I would enjoy but to my chargin, I found it very charming, intelligent and not at all sappy even for a Disney movie. The ice skating scenes are beautifully shot, Kim Cattrall is one catty board but you forgive her character later in the film. And Michelle Tractenberg's acting was very convincing, thank god they didn't get that Lindsay Lohan to star in this. I recommend this somewhat serious and "go for your dreams" mantra to every little girl who loves ice skating. Enjoy!
Just watch.......2007-01-26
This is a good movie if you stop criticizing that she mastered a triple jump quickly, and bringing your arms together decreases inertia. Honestly, thats not the point of the movie, it's more about the go for the goal kind of stuff. It's not realistic, but so what?, it's good anyway. One flaw is,she doesn't wear the white dress on the front cover at all in the video. It's also good for kids around 12-13 because it isn't something like Barney or Ariel the Mermaid, but there is nothing inappropriate in it's content.
WOW, people REALLY love happy happy endings to give this movie a 4 star rating.......2006-12-30
I expected to have a good time with this movie because 1. it's about figure skating, my favorite sport, 2. it's disney, fun, happy endings YAY. But after seeing it, I've only begun to remember the ridiculousness in disney movies, but even the Princess Diary wasn't as ridiculous.
first of, I don't care HOW TALENTED YOU ARE, a few months training CAN NOT, and I repeat CAN. NOT. make you master the triple jumps, in fact, they take a LIFETIME of ANY figure skater to master, this I find soley annoying. 2. any figure skating fan who watches figure skating constantly can see that Michell T just can't skate well, I mean, 'course she's good for someone who isn't a renouned figure skater, but even when she skates you can see her body is very tense and hard, not someone who has "natural talent" and graceful movements, the star of the show is the jumping shrimp, and alot of the other skaters who are obvious real skaters, not some actor who tries to skate but did her best, and got silver, gosh I have a big hard time believing that, and Michell Kwon too, you can feel the anger and annoyance in her voice. But what do they make up for that? yeah, she MAGICALLY did the triple jumps, I think this movie'll make any figure skater/figure skater fan really angry
Other than that would be the annoying disney formula: OF COURSE parents can never understand their kids, OF COURSE skating is more glamorous than school, and OF COURSE the science geeks don't have a life and they dress geek-ish. And yeah, one more thing: of course it's either Harvard or skating, GOD knows you can't do both!!! YEAH RIGHT, if she really won silver at such competition it won't matter, Harvard would LET her in non-the-less, and lots of athelets are honor students.
and what else? yeah, the physics, like tucking yourself in DECREASES the moment of inertia, NOT increase, common writer, DO some research at least!!! And everything else she talked about are simple Newtonian laws and equations, nothing impressive or advance as the book she's sleeping on in class- which is an AP physics book- I took the class, I know
they've only done two things right: 1. the blond girl isn't evil- THANK GOD! 2. she won silver with her fall- at least that's less fake, along with everything else...
If you are under 12 you'll like this movie better, if not, avoid, especially if you love figure skating.
"No, Mom. I'm giving up on your dream. I'm going after mine.".......2006-08-30
"Ice princess" is one of those blockbuster movies you cannot help but love. It certainly doesn't give you lots of food for thought, but it is entertaining, has good music, and at the end makes you feel happy you watched it. This movie will appeal mainly to young girls, but also to those adults that have nothing against Disney movies if they are well done.
The main character is Casey Carlyle (Michelle Trachtenberg), the classical "A" student with not too many friends and a strict mother (Joan Cusack) that encourages her to study more and more, so she can earn a scholarship and go on studying. The problem is that to earn the scholarship she wants, Casey will have to find a project in which she can put a little of herself. Even though choosing what to do seems difficult at first, Casey realizes that she can combine her love for ice skating with physics, using physics to improve the skills of talented ice-skaters. In order to work on her project Casey will have to spend some more time on the ice rink, a place where she will discover an incredible talent she didn't know about, friends waiting to be discovered, and maybe even love. However, Casey will also have to make some choices, for example what and who she wants to be.
All in all, I can say that I loved "Ice princess". It was no more and no less than what I expected, a charming movie that provides good entertainment for children and teens, and allows adults to forget about everyday problems for almost 2 hours. Of course, recommended :)
