Warping into syndication in 1987, <I>Star Trek: The Next Generation</I> successfully launched its seven-season "continuing mission" of the starship <I>Enterprise</I>, and this classy DVD boxed set gathers the show's inaugural season in crisp picture clarity and dazzling 5.1-channel sound. A ratings leader with a sharp ensemble cast, this revamped <I>Trek</I> honored series creator Gene Roddenberry's original <I>Trek</I> concept, nurtured by returning veterans like producer Robert H. Justman and writers D.C. Fontana and David Gerrold. Several first-season episodes have original-series counterparts, and while the season was awkwardly inconsistent for all involved (including Roddenberry's heir apparent, producer Rick Berman), in retrospect the series began on remarkably solid footing.

Patrick Stewart was perfect as <I>Enterprise</I> Captain Jean-Luc Picard, while Marina Sirtis struggled with a wretched hair bun and an ill-defined character, eventually blessing Counselor Troi with delicate nuance. Denise Crosby made a strong but underutilized impression as Security Chief Tasha Yar, and left the series before season's end, allowing writers to develop Klingon Lieutenant Worf (Michael Dorn) into a fan favorite. Brent Spiner transcended Spock comparisons with his triumphant portrayal of the android Lieutenant Commander Data; and while Jonathan Frakes was accepted as First Officer Will Riker, fans ultimately rejected Wil Wheaton as ensign Wesley Crusher, the teenaged son of the ship's doctor (Gates McFadden). Still, these 25 episodes laid a firm foundation for subsequent seasons, and highlights include the Raymond Chandleresque "holo- novel" of "The Big Goodbye," Data's backstory in "Datalore," the Klingon rituals of "Heart of Glory," and a Romulan encounter in "The Neutral Zone." The DVD supplements (all on the seventh disc) are good enough to make anyone wish for more: four featurettes recall myriad first-season challenges, filled with insider perspective and enough <I>NextGen</I> trivia to satiate all but the most obsessive Trekkers back on Earth. Looking back, it's easy to see why <I>NextGen</I> lived long and prospered. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars "Lets See What's Out There".......2007-05-16

Watching this DVD does bring back happy nostalgiac memories for me;towards the end of September in 1987 my folks allowed me to stay up until 11:00PM (which seemed like eternity then)to watch the premire of Star Trek:The Next Generation. At the time I was fascinated:the huge ship, these new characters,Q-it was such an grand adventure.Seeing "Encounter At Farpoint" 20 years later my opinion has improved;it's such a different story from anything done in TOS.It's almost like a feature film.A lot of people will tend to critisize this season for not quite being as secure characterizations. That is present here to a certain degree:in episodes such as "Code Of Honor" and "The Last Outpost" Captain Picard tends to make a big deal of being French.Another interesting notion about this season is Worf's smugness and strange lack of purpose;until the unfortunate death of Tasha Yar Worf seemed to be an overly aggresive token Klingon.None of that matters to me though because I think the first season of TNG is one of the best and most unique this show ever did.Actually some of the look of this season I prefer the look of this season, especially early on.The lighter colors of the crew quarters lighting and the jumpsuit uniforms (that would extend through the second season),as well as a lot of character exploration. This first season should be re evaluated by fans who once looked at this corney and incomplete at first.TNG is,to me (even at this stage) is the best of the Star Trek spin offs and has aged beautifully to this day!

Even-numbered Star Trek movies tend to be better, and <I>First Contact</I> (#8 in the popular movie series) is no exception--an intelligently handled plot involving the galaxy-conquering Borg and their attempt to invade Earth's past, alter history, and "assimilate" the entire human race. Time travel, a dazzling new Enterprise, and capable direction by Next Generation alumnus Jonathan Frakes makes this one rank with the best of the bunch. Capt. Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his able crew travel back in time to Earth in the year 2063, where they hope to ensure that the inventor of warp drive (played by James Cromwell) will successfully carry out his pioneering warp-drive flight and precipitate Earth's "first contact" with an alien race. A seductive Borg queen (Alice Krige) holds Lt. Data (Brent Spiner) hostage in an effort to sabotage the Federation's preservation of history, and the captive android finds himself tempted by the queen's tantalizing sins of the flesh! Sharply conceived to fit snugly into the burgeoning Star Trek chronology, First Contact leads to a surprise revelation that marks an important historical chapter in the ongoing mission "to boldly go where no one has gone before." --Jeff Shannon

Description

In their second big screen adventure, the year is 2373 and the crew of the Enterprise-E has learned the Borg has returned. Because of Captain Picard's past experiences with the Borg, Starfleet has ordered the Enterprise to stay out of the fight. Realizing too much is at stake, Picard disobeys orders and takes the Enterprise to Earth. His knowledge of Borg technology leads the Federation fleet to victory, but a Borg sphere escapes and opens a temporal vortex. The Enterprise pursues and travels back to April 4, 2063; the day before the first warp flight.

5 out of 5 stars Star Trek saga.......2007-05-13

Good epilogue for the BORG neverending threat to humanity!!! Great Jean-Luc PICARD in the end against the BORG QUEEN!!!!! Not so bad the Klingon WORF!! Nice and offhands rendering of the human race left (especially the creator of the warp dirve engine, COCHRANE, played amazingly well by James CROMWELL!) after the nuclear world war!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie!!!!.......2007-04-05

I really love this movie but beware, I don't know what I was thinking I thought this was the directors cut which usually puts back all the deleted seens in a movie. Well this one isn't it. It will show you the seens deleted as extras but not intergrated back into the movie. Thats my only complaint but that is a minor complaint and totally my fault. The movie itself is a great, try watching it on a big sreen TV you will love it esp. the opening fight seen in the movie when the Borg attack the fleet. This is a great buy so don't hesitate if you haven't seen the movie or just want it for you collection.

3 out of 5 stars Loved the movie, but unimpressed with the extras.......2007-04-03

I love the movie. I'd be hard pressed to say it's my favorite Star Trek movie since it's so hard to beat Wrath of Khan, but it's definitely my favorite Next Gen movie.

The bonuses however, are hardly worth purchasing the two disc collector's edition. I understand that the movie was filmed before the days of DVD and the producers didn't go into the project expecting to hand over hours worth of bonus material. It shows. All of the extras felt like they scrounged together whatever behind the scenes footage they could find and tried to build little documentary segments out of it. In my opinion, it failed spectacularly.

I, personally, was hoping for extras about the Borg Queen. Her makeup, her art direction. There is some of that, but not a lot. The only mention of her makeup is in passing and there are no behind the scenes footage of the makeup process at all.

All in all, I found the extras to be seriously lacking and not worth the additional price.

5 out of 5 stars The Line Must Be Drawn Here!.......2007-04-03

I'm not sure if I'd have ever started watching Star Trek TNG if it wasn't for Patrick Stewart and his amazing performance in this movie. How they ever got such an amazing actor to jump on board is beyond me but I'm very happy that he did.

When I watch or read a favorite movie or book, I tend to always skip sections to get to the part that was constantly replaying itself in my head over and over again all day. In First Contact, I repeatedly jump to Patrick Stewart's "Moby Dick" scene where he passionately expresses his obsession with destroying the Borg. It doesn't happen too often when an actor performs exactly how you'd like to express yourself in a way that you never realized might be in you. I first saw this movie when I was young so it made a distinct impression on me when I saw it. Been a Trekkie ever since.

I also thought James Cromwell played Zefram Cochran incredibly. When he comments on the disparity between him and his future self to Commander Riker, it's just funny how life can turn out and that there is still hope for us all. Without those two actors, the movie still would have been awesome but it would have just been another good movie but nothing you really had to watch over again.

So in my opinion, rent it if you must but it's definitely worth the $10.99. By far the best movie from the TNG series and although I more often than not skip most of the movie to get to my favorite parts, I enjoy them enough to watch the movie in it's entirety once in a while.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly The Best Star Trek Movie?.......2007-03-28

One editorial review is right: the even numbers are better.

There is a Next Generation episode which shares the name "First Contact", but the only common thread is the contact with a planet and those outside. Actually, the emphasis is not as much on the first contact but the battle to allow it to be so.

SKIP THIS PARAGRAPH IF YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE MOVIE, BECAUSE IT CONTAINS SPOILERS! I found elements of different movies in this story, especially hints to Star Treks III (destroying the Enterprise) and IV (going back in time and telling select earth people something about the future). Sometimes, it takes away from the originality of the story, but this is an exception.

Unlike Generations, this movie developed the teamwork that made this series and all other Star Treks. However, the movie gets right into the action.

I find the Borg the most disturbing of the Star Trek villains, and this fit the bill. Alice Krige was excellent in her role.

There are themes that were great in this movie. For example, the friendship between Captain Picard and Data and sacrifice. The issue of revenge and obsession. The issue of submission to authority and the boldness to take risks when necessary. The fact that people we look up to as heroes are just ordinary people like you and I who are motivated by the same things we are (or maybe not as high a motivation). As a Christian, I can see spiritual warfare implications in the movie, as well as illustrations of pitfalls we believers can fall into.

<I>Star Trek: The Next Generation</I>'s third year was an important development in syndicated television. After two shaky years, Paramount nonetheless decided the franchise still had plenty to do. Their confidence was bolstered by two significant factors. First, cast uncertainties were finally settled: Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher) was back for good; Denise Crosby (Tasha Yar) regretted her first-year departure, and so contrived a return in the Emmy Award-winning "Yesterday's Enterprise"; and Whoopi Goldberg happily continued her actor's-scale contributions.

Second, after the show had survived the previous year's writers' strike, new writing blood revitalized both characters and ideas: Data experienced fatherhood ("The Offspring"), Worf's Klingon heritage kick-started a huge story arc ("Sins of the Father"), and Picard got a saucy vacation ("Captain's Holiday"). There were memorable star cameos: John de Lancie played more mischief alongside Corbin Bernsen ("Déjà Q"); Dwight Schultz played truant in a gentle warning about addiction ("Hollow Pursuits"); and pleasing fans even more was Mark Lenard as Spock's dad ("Sarek"). The strongest evidence that <I>TNG</I> would continue for some time was the trend-setting cliffhanger finale. Fans and critics still agree that "The Best of Both Worlds" (properly introducing the Borg) was one of the greatest tricks ever pulled on TV to make audiences come back for more. <I>--Paul Tonks</I>

5 out of 5 stars Picking up steam..........2007-06-05

ST:TNG Season 3 begins with a slow burn that ends with a blazing bonfire.

Yesterday's Enterprise is the episode, halfway through the season, that begins the hectic race to the dramatic cliffhanger episode, The Best of Both Worlds, part I.

While slow at the outset, this season gives the viewer payoff after payoff that will keep you coming back for more in season 4.

Plus, Dr. Crusher is back! What more need be said?

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD Star Trek Episodes.......2007-05-27

This is a little bias because I am a star trek fan. Love the Series!

4 out of 5 stars One of the best seasons!.......2007-04-08

This season is worth purchasing for the finale episode alone. Patrick Stewart made a simply wonderful borg, and seeing Riker in command with the feisty blonde as his 2nd made that episode (in our opinions) the best in the entire series! When it viewed on the original air date we both remember literally standing up and cheering when "Locutus" came on screen!

The season also includes our second favorite episode of the series, "Q Who" where Q is banned from the continuum and forced to become human. That episode was pure fun! The biggest disappointment of the season was the return of the wimpy Dr. Crusher. We had really hoped that Dr. Pulaski would last for several seasons at least (if not the entire series!); she was so much better and stronger in the role as Chief Medical Officer--her you could believe people would follow as a leader in a military operation!

Overall, the third season was a very good one, and it was exciting to see it end with a bang (and a cliffhanger!), ensuring its continued existence... very satisfying for those of us who wish the original series had seen the same continued success.

4 out of 5 stars Stng 3rd season.......2007-03-30

If you don't love Star Trek and hate it then I can't understand why anyone would hate it.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Satisfied.......2007-02-20

To put it simply, if you're a Star Trek fan you'll like this season. If you're not, you'll probably find that some of the episodes are weak on plot or character interaction. However, there are some gems hidden among the these episodes. The Klingon sub-plot gets its starting point here and the season finale is legendary in NextGen canon. Season 3 really begins to reveal what NextGen was really all about. All in all much better than Seasons 1 and 2.

To the delight of <I>Star Trek</I> fans everywhere, the stellar second season of <I>The Next Generation</I> (1988-89) belonged to Lieutenant Commander Data. As the <I>Enterprise-D</I>'s resident android, Data (in the Emmy-worthy hands of Brent Spiner) would gain legal sentience in the season highlight "The Measure of a Man," and his increasingly "human" personality would refine itself in such diverse episodes as "Elementary, Dear Data" (Data as Sherlock Holmes), "The Outrageous Okona" (a misfire, but worthy from the Data perspective), and "Pen Pals." While Gates McFadden (Dr. Crusher) took a sabbatical of then-unknown duration (gracefully replaced by original <I>Trek</I> guest star Diana Muldaur as Dr. Pulaski), the remaining bridge crew would match Data's vitality: Riker grew a handsome beard and proved his command potential; Worf became richly nuanced in "The Icarus Factor," and met his match (and mate) in guest Suzie Plakson's fiercely Klingon sexpot K'Ehleyr; Wesley matured admirably, despite continuing fan disapproval; Betazed culture emerged as Troi locked horns with her eccentric mother, Lwaxana (Majel Barrett, in a recurring role); and La Forge made good on his promotion to chief engineer while Chief O'Brien (Colm Meaney) flawlessly rode on Geordi's coattails.

In a crucial series development, Guinan (special guest Whoopi Goldberg) revealed a connection to Q in her helpful capacity as Ten-Forward's enigmatic host, while Q himself (John DeLancie) precipitated the <I>Enterprise</I>'s first, fateful encounter with the Borg (in the suspenseful "Q Who?"). Through it all, Patrick Stewart brilliantly intensified all of Picard's renaissance qualities (especially in the dazzling "Time Squared"), exploring the captain's facets with equal measures of curiosity, fascination, amusement, courage, and philosophical insight. Despite its lame finale with the money-saving clip-show "Shades of Gray," season 2 charted a warp-nine course to the even better season 3. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Gift.......2007-06-12

I bought this as a birthday gift for my husband. It the was perfect gift for a Star Trek TNG fan. He can barely contain himself from watching the whole season straight through.

4 out of 5 stars Worth the watch........2007-05-23

I have been a Trekkie most of my life, but I had to say that I was somewhat disappointed with the first TNG season. It seemed too slow, almost tedious at times. It almost suprises me that there was a second season, but I'm glad that there was. The second season is a definate improvement. I have nothing against Dr. Crusher, but I do like Dr. Pulaski much better. Another thing in its favour is the character developments in the second season. I like getting to know the characters better and seeing what they do with their lives, rather than just the wonders the ship has to offer. Probably the best episodes in this season, in my humble opinion, were Manhunt, Elementary, Dear Data, The Child, and Up the Long Ladder. Definately worth the watch.

4 out of 5 stars Buy it for Dr. Pulaski!.......2007-04-08

Although later seasons had more really good episodes and saw more development in the core characters, this season is worth buying just for the stellar performance of Diana Muldaur as Dr. Pulaski. We never liked the character of Dr. Crusher, who was weak at best, and were greatly disappointed when she returned to replace the far superior Dr. Pulaski. My families' favorite episodes were the one with Lor, Data's brother, and the one where Pulaski operates on Captain Picard, which did a great deal to develop the characters of Picard and Wesley Crusher as well as the good doctor. We give it 4 stars for Diana Muldaur's sake.

4 out of 5 stars STNG 2nd season.......2007-03-30

If you love Star Trek then you like this and anything else StarTrek ,except the movie Insurrection which is the only thing Star Trek that SUCKS!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars One-Ups Season One.......2007-03-08

Season 2 of ST:TNG is a definite improvement over Season 1, despite Gates McFaddin being on sabbatical and the writer's strike of the time. Diana Muldaur spiced things up as the hard-edged Dr. Pulaski, and Whoopi Goldberg slipped in nicely as the charismatic Guinan. Some of the episodes leave a lot to be desired, but there is plenty here that makes up for it.

In <I>Independence Day</I>, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. <I>Independence Day</I> is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, <I>Independence Day</I> is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the president's injured wife, who are then both rescued by Smith's character who somehow runs across them in alien-ravaged Los Angeles County.) The movie is just sheer fun, aided by a cast that knows how to balance the retro requirements of the genre with a more contemporary feel. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

    1 out of 5 stars I hated this movie.......2007-05-31

This movie sucked big time. It was so Over the Top. One man takes on the galaxy with help from the President and a guy flying a crop duster. Gimme a break. Also, this movie sports some of the worst one liners.

    5 out of 5 stars Love It.......2007-05-15

I'm not usually one for action and too much excitement but this movie was exciting and funny and had a great message to it. I loved the movie and I think you probably will too.

5 out of 5 stars entertaining annual event.......2007-05-12

We have been watching this movie almost yearly since we saw it the first time shortly after it came out. We had a vcr version and watched it in our travel trailer. Now with the dvd, we have introduced it to our youngest grandson. For him it is a change from his normal space adventure. And he loves it too.

5 out of 5 stars Great action movie.......2007-05-12

One of the best Alien invasion action movies, amazing effects, great acting and an awesome story, highly recommended!

3 out of 5 stars not bad but..........2007-03-30

The scene where Will Smith and his partner Jimmy get chased by alien space craft...there were 2 alien ships chasing them...what happened to the other? When Jimmy gets killed in his fighter jet the other alien ship just decides to fall back and stop chasing Will Smith??? give me a break!! There should have been 2 alien ships chasing Smith not 1...so there's a discontinuity issue there.

<p clear=left> <img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/video/stills/aviator-01_m.jpg" align= "left" border="0"> From Hollywood's legendary Cocoanut Grove to the pioneering conquest of the wild blue yonder, Martin Scorsese's The Aviator celebrates old-school filmmaking at its finest. We say "old school" only because Scorsese's love of golden-age Hollywood is evident in his approach to his subject--Howard Hughes in his prime (played by Leonardo DiCaprio in his)--and especially in his technical mastery of the medium reflecting his love for classical filmmaking of the studio era. Even when he's using state-of-the-art digital trickery for the film's exciting flight scenes (including one of the most spectacular crashes ever filmed), Scorsese's meticulous attention to art direction and costume design suggests an impassioned pursuit of craftsmanship from a bygone era; every frame seems to glow with gilded detail. And while DiCaprio bears little physical resemblance to Hughes during the film's 20-year span (late 1920s to late '40s), he efficiently captures the eccentric millionaire's golden-boy essence, and his tragic descent into obsessive-compulsive seclusion. Bolstered by Cate Blanchett's uncannily accurate portrayal of Katharine Hepburn as Hughes' most beloved lover, The Aviator is easily Scorsese's most accessible film, inviting mainstream popularity without compromising Scorsese's artistic reputation. As compelling crowd-pleasers go, it's a class act from start to finish. --Jeff Shannon

    <b>DVD Features</b>
In his commentary track, director Martin Scorsese offers his own impressions of Howard Hughes and rattles off his memories of experiencing Hughes's films. He mentions how he made Cate Blanchett watch every Katharine Hepburn film from the '30s on the big screen, and observes that Kate Beckinsale had "a real sense of the stature of a Hollywood goddess." But in general he doesn't talk much about the craft of making the film. That area is covered better by editor Thelma Schoonmaker, who also appears on the commentary track, and producer Michael Mann makes a few appearances (all were recorded separately). The picture is brilliant, but the 5.1 sound is not as aggressive in the rear speakers and subwoofer as one might expect, other than some nice surround effects in the <I>Hell's Angels</I> flying sequence.

The second disc collects almost three hours of features. There's one unnecessary deleted scene, and an 11-minute making-of featurette that's basically the cast and director heaping praise on each other. More interesting are the short featurettes on visual effects (including the XF-11 scene, of course), production design, costumes, hair and makeup, and score, and Loudon Wainwright discusses his and his children's musical performances. Historical perspective is provided by spotlights on Hughes's role in aviation and his obsessive-compulsive disorder, and a 43-minute Hughes documentary from the History Channel (part of the Modern Marvels series, it focuses on his mechanical innovations and spends less than a minute on his movies). More unusual are DiCaprio and Scorsese's appearance on an OCD panel, and a half-hour interview segment DiCaprio did with Alan Alda. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>

5 out of 5 stars A film that takes flight and soars above the rest..........2007-06-22

It took me a while to see `The Aviator' since word from my friends and family was that the running time was exhausting. While they have some reason to feel that way personally I feel that the film is so well put together that it more than makes the running time worth while. Leonardo DiCaprio is at his best here and delivers an award worthy performance as the legend Howard Hughes. Martin Scorsese delivers as well, directing powerhouse performances with great effects and amazing storytelling capacity. `The Aviator' truly is a mesmerizing biopic and is probably, but don't quote me on this, the best of the bunch to be released in `the year of the biopic'.

The film gracefully covers most of Hughes adult life, exposing his love life and his business escapades not to mention his quarks and obsessions. Along the way we are introduced to some of Hollywood's most elite, from Katherine Hepburn, played magnificently by Oscar winner Cate Blanchett, to Jean Harlow and Ava Gardner. His relationships with these women is dissected, mostly when it comes to Hepburn, and the chemistry between both DiCaprio and Blanchett is so effortless that it makes the whole experience comfortable and believable to the viewer.

The film, as is apparent by the title, focuses in large part on Hughes obsession with aviation, but it's his other strange obsessions that make a great canvas for DiCaprio's in-depth and articulate performance. I've always known that there was a great actor underneath those pretty boy looks and thankfully Leonardo took advantage of that when he took this role on full speed ahead. The way that he delves deep into the madness that overtook Hughes was pure genius, and the way he was able to keep his head, making it believable as apposed to over the top, his commendable and noteworthy.

The supporting cast including John C. Reilly, Alec Baldwin, Gwen Stefani, Kate Beckinsale and Jude Law is very impressive, and everyone is on key, but none so much as Alan Alda who plays Senator Brewster, the enemy as you could label him. The court hearings towards the end of this film where Brewster and Hughes square off are exciting and real and they really show the brilliance of these two actors. Watching them debate back and forth is so effortless it transcends acting. It's actually, don't take this wrong, beautiful to watch.

Scorsese really outdoes himself here, combining a great true life story with a powerful script that does it's best to flesh out a man who had a lot to uncover, not to mention the fantastic acting and fluid chemistry, making `The Aviator' one of the must see movies of the given year. I remember watching it and wondering how anyone could walk away feeling indifferent. Sure, it's not perfect, but it's one of the best films of the year and surely one of the best showcases for pure acting genius. Scorsese and company is truly to be commended for delivering one great work of art.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Work of Art.......2007-05-02

One of the greatest compliments to any film, IMHO, is when it can be called a great work of art. And this one is just that, a great work of art. Leonardo DiCaprio was great, as usual, in this film. I've read, in some places, that the film took a few liberties with facts about Hughes, but it's still a great film. It also highlights the rather unknown facts of Hughes' excentricities, OCD, which can be devastating for some, and greatly misunderstood by those around them. But the art and craftwork that went into creating the period are just fantastic.

5 out of 5 stars Come Fly with Hughes, Scorsese and Di Caprio (4.5 stars).......2007-04-25

"The Aviator" carries more similarities with earlier Martin Scorsese's masterpiece -- "The Raging Bull" -- than might be obvious at first viewing. Both the aviator and film producer Howard Hughes (Leonardo di Caprio) and the boxing pro champ Jake LaMotta (Robert de Niro in the 1980 movie) achieved much in their lives, but were prevented to reach even higher heights -- partly due to their own mistakes, partly due to circumstances that were against them. But the most striking similarity between the two films lies in the way Scorsese masterfully injected them with understated compassion with the characters -- Interestingly, even the names of the two Scorsese's favorite actors are similarly Italian.

There are some differences, too. While Jake LaMotta's demons are an integral part of the film and its events, Howard Hughes' mental illness does not really carry the film forward and is the main reason why "The Aviator" feels a little too long. But not too long, rest assured. You can devour it, time flies with it -- so irresistibly watchable this is. Also due to the stellar cast headed by di Caprio. And the word to Cate Blanchett -- when Katharine Hepburn, so far the only actress (or actor, for that matter) who owns 4 acting Oscars, passed away at 96 in 2003, it could not occur to many that in just a year there will be such a great incarnation of HERSELF on film.

Blanchett earned the Oscar of her own for this role and the film got four more statues, but the most prestigious ones went to Clint Eastwood's sombre and more intimate "Million Dollar Baby". Indeed, "The Aviator" has not as high emotional resonance as some other big prize winners and as such does not stay with you for days after you see it, but solely for its sheer, classy filmmaking craft it easily ranks among the best works of the century so far.

5 out of 5 stars TWA - - The Way of the Future!!! All aboard!!!.......2007-04-23

Wow.... just got done watch the Aviator, and that is one word I can absolutely describe the movie. The picture/scenes, for a minute I thought I was watching HD, but it was only 420p. I had to rub my eyes because I thought I was robbing HD :). Anyways, this movie by far, on a scale of 1 to 10. This movie is hmmm let me think a second, forget it, it breaks the SCALE! I couldn't believe my eyes through out the whole movie. Leo playing Howard, and here I thought he did an amazing job (which he did) in Blood Diamonds, but WOW!! Leo did an unbelievable acting job. At times, I was like, this is Howard Hughes!! Wow! The determination of Howard. The passion of Howard. The unwilling to give up on his Goal! Leo definitely brought out in Howard! It was shear entertainment! RENT ATLEAST! Just get to know Howard through Leo! But not be everything accurate of Howard, but you get the gist. I bought it and it was well spent, for $4? Come on! I just robbed someone! It was a great bargain!! I would give this movie 10 stars, 20 stars, no amount of stars would justify how great this movie was overall. I am impressed with the man that is called "Mr. Howard." The rest of the cast was just as good.... but Leo, wow, I felt like it was a one man show and it was him trying to let me to get to know who Mr. Howard was. And his eccentrics, felt so sorry for him especially at the end all naked with a bunch of tissue warzone. It undoubtablely (if thats even a word) the movie one have to watch. Great Job, Leo, might of not won an Oscar, but you definitely deserve an ovation of a great performance! RENT THIS MOVIE! OR BUY IT! Either way . . . you WIN!!!! :)

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing movie!.......2007-04-11

I knew nothing about Howard Hughes before watching the movie, and I think this movie did a good job of introducing me to this historical figure. DiCaprio did an amazing job, his acting talents never cease to amaze me! Wonderful movie!

OK, let's get all the disclaimers out of the way first. Despite its colorful (if crude) animation, <I>South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut</I> is in no way meant for kids. It is chock full of profanity that might even make Quentin Tarantino blanch and has blasphemous references to God, Satan, Saddam Hussein (who's sleeping with Satan, literally), and Canada. It's rife with scatological humor, suggestive sexual situations, political incorrectness, and gleeful, rampant vulgarity. And it's probably one of the most brilliant satires ever made. The plot: flatulent Canadian gross meisters Terrance and Philip hit the big screen, and the South Park quartet of third graders--Stan, Kyle, Kenny, and Cartman--begin repeating their profane one-liners ad infinitum. The parents of South Park, led by Kyle's overbearing mom, form "Mothers Against Canada," blaming their neighbors to the north for their children's corruption and taking Terrance and Philip as war prisoners. It's up to the kids then to rescue their heroes from execution, not mention a brooding Satan, who's planning to take over the world.

To give away any more of the plot would destroy the fun, but this feature-length version of Trey Parker and Matt Stone's Comedy Central hit is a dead-on and hilarious send-up of pop culture. And did we mention it's a musical? From the opening production number "Mountain Town" to the cheerful antiprofanity sing-along "It's Easy, MMMKay" to Satan's faux-Disney ballad "Up There," Parker (who wrote or cowrote all the songs) brilliantly shoots down every earnest musical from <I>Beauty and the Beast</I> to <I>Les Misérables</I>. And in advocating free speech and satirizing well-meaning but misguided parental censorship groups (with a special nod to the MPAA), <I>Bigger, Longer & Uncut</I> hits home against adult paranoia and hypocrisy with a vengeance. And the jokes, while indeed vulgar and gross, are hysterical; we can't repeat them here, especially the lyrics to Terrance and Philip's hit song, but you'll be rolling on the floor. Don't worry, though--to paraphrase Cartman, this movie won't warp your fragile little mind. Unless you have something against the First Amendment. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

    5 out of 5 stars Genius!.......2007-05-19

To start this movie is the worste animated, rudest and full of swears. Yet I am not joking when I say this movie is truly a masterpiece.

The plot is quite hilarious and well thought out. At every point in the film is a laugh or two. Playing the movie over again, you may laugh even at stuff you missed the first time.

This movie is terribly overlooked in an important department, music. This film has some of the best music composition Ive ever heard. The film can almost be called a musical.... hell it is a musical. Every song is truly catchy. La Resistence is my personal favorite song.

This movie is not only funny but very smart. It is a guilty treat that never gets old. Do not over look this movie because of profanity.

5 out of 5 stars South Park At Its Finest!.......2007-05-09

If you are a fan of South Park, then you will absolutely LOVE this movie. I continually watch this DVD over and over and the jokes are never old. Was surprised the first time I saw it, to find it was a South Park Musical. The songs are sung and written by Trey Parker and Matt Stone and you will find yourself singing them long after the DVD is out of the player. Buy it, you will have no regrets!

5 out of 5 stars Kyle's mum is a b**ch, but this movie is excellent.......2007-05-02

I watched this when it first came out years ago, and I've just recently bought it again on the discount shelf at a shop and i have to say I'm still laughing hard and hate kyles mum more then ever. I cant wait to catch up on seasons 5-9 which i've ordered off here (order the seasons seperatly it works out much cheaper then in the one box of seasons 1-5).

If you haven't seen this movie, please do as soon as you can as it not only is funny, but says so much more on behalf of the perceptive nature of many people not just in america but in the west in general (well, in that i could say the east too, but the south park version in arabic was stopped after three episodes!)

Just watch it. You'll thank me another time ;)

John Travolta's should've-been-nominated-for-an-Oscar performance is the best reason to see this largely moving work, which is a little reminiscent of the novel Flowers for Algernon (basis for the film Charly). Travolta plays a mechanic who sees a bright light in the sky one night and wakes up the next morning a genius, hungry for knowledge and so smart he figures out national defense secrets in his own living room (and gets in hot water for it). The more interesting drama, however, is not with the government but with the character's longtime neighbors and friends, who come to reject him for being different. Robert Duvall gives a stirring performance as a doctor who has known the hero all his life, and Kyra Sedgwick is very good as an ambivalent love interest. If you missed this one in the theaters, then you haven't seen one of Travolta's best performances since his comeback. The DVD release presents a widescreen image, optional French soundtrack, optional Spanish subtitles, and theatrical trailer. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

4 out of 5 stars Much, much more than a simple vehicle for Travolta's 15th comeback.......2007-05-21

George Malley (John Travolta) is an affable, easy-going auto mechanic in a sleepy American town. He has become smitten by Lace (Kyra Sedgwick), a ferociously-independent and emotionally guarded single mother who manufacturers chairs in an even more remote location than the town itself. George's bumbling attempts at piquing her interest continually fail, yet he remains optimistic, even after she rebuffs him for his 37th birthday party.

Remonstrated by his long-time friend Nate (Forest Whitaker) that he shouldn't be purchasing his own drinks at his own birthday party, George wanders outside, where he has a most unusual encounter--perhaps even of the "first" and "close" variety. Rendered senseless by the experience, he soon recovers and heads back inside the bar, where his pals continue their celebrations and chuckle as he tells his story. Later that night, George lies awake, pressured thoughts consuming his mind. Suddenly, he bolts out of his useless bed as a surprising illumination enters his brain: he now knows exactly how the darned rabbit keeps getting in his fenced-off garden!

There are so many undercurrent messages socked away in this movie, it is a wonder the director, Jon Turteltaub ("Instinct," "National Treasure"), remembered to film the thing. It is a testament to this director's subtlety that these messages come across as gentle and graceful reminders of life's beauty, rather than as annoying platitudes meant to placate the unwashed masses. A few examples, and I have doubtless missed many: "sometimes remarkable things happen to unremarkable people," "every person's life belongs to a greater whole," "judge not with haste," "information is power," "humans possess near-unlimited potential," and "love can be everything." I tend to view the cramming of acceptable moral precepts down an audience's collective throat--during something meant as entertainment--to be a particularly sad method by which Hollywood demonstrates its humanity; however, this tactic is not being employed here.

    *minor spoilers/plot points below*

We are witness to George coming to grips with his new-found powers. His rise in the community from country gentleman to powerful entity is shown clearly through the eyes of the audience, who exhibit very believable reactions: fear, humility, puzzlement, and, that most cursed of double-edged swords, worship. He witnesses friends drifting away, metamorphing into disciples, or being shamed into silence because of their perceived intellectual inadequacy. George becomes slave to these myriad new ideas filling his brain, preventing sleep, self-care, and respite. He involves himself in a cipher "game" on the short-wave radio belonging to Nate, and ultimately provokes very highly-placed unwanted attention, indeed. George wonders why all his newfound abilities help him not at all in his quest to pierce Lace's heart. He invents many rude implements, which yet work spectacularly well in their functions. A seismologist from Berkley, visiting Mr. Malley to verify his ability to "sense" ULF (ultra-low frequency) emissions--which herald the arrival of an earthquake--is swept along on a scavenger hunt of sorts for an extremely sick local boy.

    *end minor spoilers/plot points*

There are far, far too many ideas explored in this movie, but it succeeds anyway. Travolta is not fantastically convincing in the beginning; yet he, like George, becomes more and more remarkable (and thus, believable) as the movie progresses. The gentle way he informs Lace that "it's happening," made me want to switch the movie off, so real it seemed. Kyra is absolutely convincing, as always. I fell in love with her character at least five separate times in the movie. Robert Duvall and Forest Whitaker also steal many scenes with their requisite skill. Mr. Duvall's outburst in the pub towards movie's end stunned me into silence. Forest's performance as socially-stunted introvert, incapable of expressing his feelings towards women, was totally on the money. I'm sorry I waited nearly eleven years to see this movie. It touched my mind and my heart by the end--just as Malley's experience touched his, and those of the people he loved. This was a beautiful and worthwhile movie. Sometimes "star-studded" yields something truly memorable: here is that movie.

    5 out of 5 stars Phenomenon.......2007-05-09

Another outstanding movie with John Travolta. Such a romance. John stretched for this role and pulled it off with flying colors. His costars were perfect too.

This story this movie touches me in so many ways and
on so many levels. It is a bittersweet but lovingly
told story of the power and magic that is life and death.
It will reach into your heart into your soul and you
will feel the tears in your heart and some may fall
from your eyes. I believe that I can guarantee you
that this movie will be time well spent. Immerse
yourself in this story and feel the magic, the
power of love and life , and the passing of life.
It is definitely worthy of your
movie collection. I recommend this movie to
one and all. May you be blessed for having
    watched it.

    4 out of 5 stars A Bittersweet Story.......2006-10-23

George Malley, played by John Travolta, is a nice enough guy but he is not exactly the brightest crayon in the box. He is a well liked auto mechanic who tries hard but is not too good at anything except fixing cars. Then one day, when leaving his birthday party, he sees a light in the sky and then passes out.

When he comes to, everything is different but it takes a while for him to put his finger on it. His concentration is better. He is able to retain what he reads. He has lots of bright ideas. Along with all of this, though, he cannot sleep. He spends all night reading and coming up with gadgets and theories. Most of them work.

His friends notice things are different but they cannot shake the ideal of a dull George Malley. His intelligence makes them a bit jealous and then even frightens them. This is especially true when he manages to learn Portuguese in half and hour in order to save a lost child with food poisoning. They are sure they are afraid when he exhibits some telekinesis. Rumors abound.

Most of the rumors center around the UFO George saw on the night of his change. That makes things scarier.

George falls in love with a single mom and has a hard time winning her over. Eventually, though, he does because she can see his good heart. This is about the time that he comes under scrutiny from academic and government types. The academics want to study him and the government is frightened because they cannot control him. Things come to a head when it turns out that there is a very mundane explanation for the phenomenon and some medical types want to cut him up.

This story has its happy moments and its share of sad ones as well. It a story of acceptance and character. In some case it is the story of the lack of those attributes.

The sacrifice of a beloved character is just one of many highlights in <I>Nemesis</I>, the 10th feature in the lucrative <I>Star Trek</I> franchise. Enigmatically billed as the beginning of "A Generation's Final Journey," this richly plotted <I>Next Generation</I> adventure maintains the "even number rule" regarding <I>Trek</I>'s feature quality, and it's one of the best in the series. It hits its brisk stride when Picard (Patrick Stewart) and his <I>Enterprise-E</I> crew encounter Shinzon (Tom Hardy), a younger clone of Picard, rejected by the Romulans as the human weapon of an abandoned conspiracy. Raised on the nocturnal Romulan sister planet Remus, Shinzon now plots revenge against Romulus <I>and</I> Earth but needs Picard's blood to carry out his scheme. A wedding, a childlike "duplicate" Data named B-4 (Brent Spiner), spectacular space battles, and uncommon acts of valor make this a tautly-paced action thriller, poised to pass the franchise (but not quite yet) to a new generation of Starfleet personnel. Die-hard Trekkers will <I>not</I> be disappointed. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

3 out of 5 stars Not true to the series but..........2007-06-17

its not the worst film I've ever seen. (a few Spoilers below)
The main problems are that the story doesn't hold up to being made as a movie. I could have seen this as a special mini series or something. Everything seemed so THROWN together at the last minute and there were many gaps on continuity from DS9 and the original TNG. I hated the idea of Worf leaving his position with the Klingons to stay with Star Fleet knowing he can never move up in position, no possible way for him to be promoted ever...yet this movie makes it seem like he is doing just that. I liked the idea of him staying with the Klingons as was shown in the last episode of DS9.
What helped me give this movie 3 stars is that the deleted scenes made the movie better in my opinion, and should have been included. That shot with Spot and Worf answered my question as to what would be done with his things and what ever happened to Spot (though I can't see Worf keeping him...they should have had Deanna in the room with Spot and Spot going to her that would have been touching and more plausible). I liked seeing Admiral Janeway too, really helped bring the shows together.
Also it was nice how the extended ending had a new XO come on board and that joke with the captain's chair was nice.
Without the extras, however, I would only give this 2 stars. It was a disappointment for a true fan of the ST universe.

4 out of 5 stars Dark, very dark for a Star Trek Movie.......2007-06-04

I'm not a fan of the dark movies, it may create an evil effect, but also makes it hard for the viewer to enjoy all that there is to be seen. This does live up to the Franchise history. Good battle scenes, conflict between good and evil, and true victory to the one that out thinks or out strategizes the other. I'm glad to see that they continue to bring the "technology" further into the future and that they allow the characters to grow and receive some "promotions" as side stories in it all. All in all, I have to say that I wasn't really disappointed with this movie and have added it to my collection. If you are a Star Trek fan, you should buy it. If you like Sci-Fi movies, you should at least watch it.

5 out of 5 stars The Most Underapreciated Star Trek Film.......2007-05-15

The final Star Trek film is the most underapreciated in my opinion. I have and always shall be a trekkie. I have all the films and enjoy everyone of them though some are better than others. I have always enjoyed the Romulan stories and for the first time the Romulans are in one of the movies, and it just happens to be the final one. It was a very well done story and is one of my favorites.

    4 out of 5 stars Nemesis.......2007-05-06

This was the only S.T. movie I had not seen. Sure glad to have found it and enjoyed it!
