Description

Times change. Dangers remain. 10 years after he became President of the Interstellar Alliance, Sheridan prepares for a fateful Babylon 5 reunion that could prevent Earth's impending doom...if he will also compromise his core principles. Meanwhile, commander Lochley confronts an unexpected interloper on the way station - a being whose presence makes the B5 freeport the crossroads between heaven and hell. In Voices in the Dark, Series creator J. Michael Straczynski reunites with stars Bruce Boxleitner and Tracy Scoggins in two richly imagined stories set after the events of the original series. Richly imagined, too, is Straczynski's vision of the 23rd century (including a dazzling New York City) - a vision made more spectacular via filmmaking technology unavailable during the original series.

5 out of 5 stars Real Potential and good news for B5 fans.......2007-05-19

This is a great concept that allows JMS to directly market to B5 fans. It gets the broadcasters out of the way which is great. This works because B5 has such a large established fan base. However we need to wait and see how well it was implemented. Personally I am waiting with bated breath.

I really hope it works because there is so much more to do. I would love to see the Centauri trilogy and the continuation of Crusade in the following sets. The one regret I have is that Andreas Katsulas is no longer around so no more G'Kar. He was such a major character and a great actor that his loss will be felt dearly. If this was BBC they would just get someone who vaguely looked like him and add the makeup but am not sure that would for either JMS or the fans. As for Girabaldi's hair, I am not too worried, after all that is what wigs are for :-)

5 out of 5 stars I've seen a bit of it.......2007-04-30

At the New York Comic Con in February, JMS showed a couple of versions of the opening sequence. Once was with completed CGI but no music. Once was with music but incomplete CGI. It wouldn't be right to give a detailed description but I can tell you that the CGI is excellent and that the opening sequence is wonderful, pure Babylon 5 and even manages to give a 'nod' to Andreas Katsulas. The music is also great.

To correct a previous review, the disk does only have two stories - one on B5 and the other on the Presidential starship. Galen, as I undertand it, will be in some key scenes in both stories but doesn't have a segment of his own.

Oh, and the Director's Blogs are a hoot.

2 out of 5 stars 75 minutes ?.......2007-04-28

Run time: 75 minutes.

Are they kidding? For two stories? That means each one is less than the length of an episode.

As Ivanova once said in a classic episode of Babylon 5, "I'll wait in the car."

Rather than assume its going to be good, I'll wait to hear if someone whose opinion I respect gives it a thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars New Babylon 5!.......2007-04-27

Although I can't deny I wish JMS had chosen not to start things out with a Lochley story (Pretty much any other main character would have been preferable) I am really looking forward to this disc. New B5 for the first time since the failed Legends Of The Rangers movie. How cool is that?! The release date is still over three months away and Lost Tales is already at number six in Amazon's sales rankings. Hopefully high sales will mean more Lost Tales in the future.

5 out of 5 stars It's coming, better than ever!.......2007-04-26

Wow, this is really exciting for all the B5 fans. The cover is up on JMS's Babylon5scripts.com, By the way. Technomage Galen returns, along with our greatest hero, John Sheridan. Prince Regent Vintari, third from the Centauri throne, is aiding President Sheridan on a quest.

As the official site says: "One part of the story follows Sheridan as he picks up an unexpected visitor on the edge of Centauri space, Prince Regent Dius Vintari, and a warning about what will come afterward delivered by the techno-mage, Galen. The other part of the story is set aboard Babylon 5, as Colonel Lochley summons a priest from Earth space to deal with a problem that may have dark supernatural overtones." The stories will intersect on various levels, of course.

The stories travel everywhere: from Minbar, to Earth, Mars, the future, the distant past, as well as B5 itself, of course. Best of all, they're written by the original producer, JMS, the one who wrote most episodes of the beloved series. He's determined to use better technolgoy to make much better special effects. With his fantastic gift for story and our beloved character, it can't miss.

Product Description

The future begins - or ends - here and now. Here is the huge space station Babylon 5. Now is the fateful year 2261. Commander John Sheridan has already declared the station free, breaking the ties between it and Earth Alliance. It was perhaps only a matter of time before he would have to fight to remain free. That time has come in this complete 22-episode fourth-season adventure presented on six discs and featuring an exciting array of exclusive extras.
Running Time: 966 min.

Format: DVD MOVIE

Season 4 began on a high point with the Centauri Prime in the grip of the insane Emperor Cartagia (Wortham Krimmer) and a run of six shows leading to the climax of the war against the Shadows in "Into the Fire." If this colossal narrative was resolved a little too easily and the ultimate aim of the Shadows turned out to be a tad disappointing, it still proved to be the most powerful slice of space opera to ever grace the small screen. In the aftermath the sheer scale dropped back a little but the pace never slowed as the rest of the season played out in one relentless cycle of conspiracy, betrayal and conflict, <I>Babylon 5</I> siding with the rebel Mars colony against the totalitarian Earth.

Meanwhile Delenn came increasingly into conflict with her own people and, paralleling her relationship with Sheridan, Garibaldi became involved with his ex-fiancée Lise Hampton (Denise Gentile), while an intense platonic love grew between Ivanova and Marcus Cole. On an unstoppable wave fuelled by roller-coaster plot twists and spectacular action shows from "No Surrender, No Retreat"--when Sheridan avows to overthrow EarthGov--to "Rising Star"--when the aim is realized--<I>Babylon 5</I> achieved a consistent excellence rare in television. Yet within that run "Intersections in Real Time" stood out as a bold experiment; essentially a two-hand drama taking place entirely within one dimly lit room. Beyond this a major character died and Sheridan and Delenn married before the season finale again broke with expectation. In "The Deconstruction of Falling Stars," a future descendant of humanity one million years hence reviews excerpts from the history of <I>Babylon 5</I>. In one sequence set in 2762, a Brother is devoted to the preserving of history some time after the "Big Burn." A homage to Walter M. Miller's classic <I>A Canticle for Leibowitz</I>, Sheridan and Delenn have themselves become the stuff of legend. <I>--Gary S. Dalkin</I>

5 out of 5 stars One of the best series, ever!.......2007-05-24

This series got better and better. It is well written, the characters are wonderful, well developed and well portrayed.

The fourth season, like all of them, was great! The DVD collection fills the void in the universe left by such an excellent show.

5 out of 5 stars 1261... What a year!.......2007-04-01

Babylon 5 Season VI continues to shed light on the ongoing adventures and parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major space station under Human control in neutral territory orbiting Epsilon 3.
The date is 2261 and representatives from both the major and minor space-faring races have all gathered at Babylon 5 in a last effort at achieving victory during the most deadly conflict the universe has seen to date... the Shadow War!
Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the series is without a doubt guaranteed to provide hours of entertainment.
The only setbacks are in relation to:
1) Enough with the writer's, J. Michael Straczynski's, obsession with the Germans, the Soviets and WWII; it gets tiring after the first THREE seasons! JMS, as he himself states in The Lurker's Guide to Babylon 5 website, has a lot of (too much) personal issues/baggage going back to the WWII era: "I have had a longstanding interest and familiarity with this area...and through my European roots with relatives who were in Germany and Poland when the camps were in full swing, and later when the Russian government beat down its people. I have plenty of personal background on this one."
JMS would do well to keep all these personal issues... personal (!) and to himself. This is an outstanding sci-fi show that should not become the instrument or the means for anyone's personal agenda and not-so-hidden messages.
2) In the episode "The Exercise of Vital Powers," JMS trash talks Greeks through Garibaldi by stating that happiness for a Greek consists of "3 goats and some wine."
I wonder though, why JMS doesn't make similar "witty" jokes about Ivanovas' faith... Hmmm... He is a self-professed atheist, but is he though? I wonder...
3) What has happened to Vir? He is so much thinner, hyper and so much less adorable now...
On the positive side:
1) The OUTSTANDING plot and subplots keep getting better and better!
2) The GREAT characters become more and more developed, and
3) The wonderful feeling of being addicted to the show and wanting more!
4) The music has gotten even better in this season.

In conclusion, Babylon 5 is a series definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

5 out of 5 stars Babylon 5 - The Complete Fourth Season.......2007-03-21

I have always enjoyed watching this series and have been waiting for the chance to be able to watch anytime I want. I plan on buying the whole set eventually.

5 out of 5 stars The climatic season of a really great series.......2007-03-04

This is the real climax to the Babylon 5 series. True there is another to follow but it is a denounment to the series. Action, it is there. The Shadow War comes to a surprising conclusion. Earth and her colonies throw off the yoke that has held them, with help from B-5. The writing stay on line as a laser beam. The characters are well rounded and very real. Any fan of sci-fi space opera should have this in their collection.

3 out of 5 stars Great season, very disappointing video quality.......2007-02-03

I just wanted to comment briefly on the video quality of this set. I just bought a new HDTV and was looking forward to watching this series filling that nice large screen in a proper 16:9 aspect ratio. As everyone probably knows, all the DVDs in this series suffer from some quality issues due to the way the CGI shots were originally done. This was noticeable in previous season releases as well as this one. So I was prepared for this when I popped the first disc in. But I wasn't prepared for the extreme amounts of grain in the video. When watching this on my old 32" Trinitron TV, the video looked fine. But on my new 46" HDTV, it looks really, really awful. All the flaws are laid bare on a large HDTV screen. At first, I thought it was an issue with my TV. But all my other DVDs look fantastic. So I tweaked the settings as much as I could, but it didn't really help much. Then for comparison purposes, I popped in a disc from Season 1. There is some noticeable grain there, too, but it's still quite watchable and it even gives it a nice film-like quality which is kind of pleasing. I also tried the movie "A Call to Arms" from the Babylon 5 movie collection set. It looks pretty good, too. But on the Season 4 set, and on "Thirdspace" from the movie set, the grain is seriously distracting and looks just plain bad. It has unfortunately ruined my enjoyment of this very good season. From what I've read, this seems to be a problem with the source and not with the DVD transfers themselves, so I don't know if this will ever be correctable. And like I said, it looks fine on a regular TV. But I just wanted to give a warning to anyone who plans to watch this on an HDTV someday. Prepare to be disappointed.

"Matters of Honor" launched <I>Babylon 5</I>'s third season with the introduction of the <I>White Star</I>, a spacecraft added to enable more of the action to take place away from the station. Also introduced was Marcus Cole (Jason Carter)--in another nod to <I>The Lord of the Rings</I>, a Ranger not so far removed from Tolkien's Strider. In "Voices of Authority" the show finds an epic scale as Ivanova seeks the mysterious "First Ones" for allies against the Shadows, and evidence is discovered pointing to the truth behind President Santiago's assassination. A third of the way through the season "Messages from Earth," "Point of No Return," and "Severed Dreams" prove pivotal, changing the nature of the story in a way previously unimaginable on network TV. Earth slides into dictatorship, the fascistic Nightwatch takes control of off-world security, and Sheridan take decisive action by declaring Babylon 5 independent.

"Interludes and Examinations" presented the death of a major supporting character, while the two-part "War Without End" reached apocalyptic dimensions in a complex tale resolving the destiny of Sinclair and the fate of <I>Babylon 4</I> (dovetailing elegantly with the events of the first season's "Babylon Squared"), resolving a 1,000-year-old paradox and presenting a vision of a very dark future for Sheridan and Delenn. All this was trumped by the monumental "Z'ha'dum." In the preceding "Shadow Dancing" Anna Sheridan (Melissa Gilbert, Bruce Boxleitner's real-life wife) returned from the dead, no longer entirely human. In the mythologically resonant climax Anna invited Sheridan back to the Shadow homeworld with no hope of survival. Just as in <I>The Lord of the Rings</I> Gandalf fell into the abyss at Khazad-Dum, so Sheridan took a comparable leap into the unknown on an alien world. <I>--Gary S. Dalkin</I>

5 out of 5 stars I Love This Series.......2007-05-01

This is a well-written and wonderfully acted sci-fi series, and season 3 has some of the most exciting episodes in it. The characters are very rich and unique, and each has their own agenda and set of ethics motivating their actions. The series slowly builds from the beginning through every episode leading up to the climatic war of the shadows where everything finally ties together neatly, making perfect sense. The first 3 seasons are well worth the money and reveal more of the subplots when watching them the second time through. This is definitely a classic series worth having. I would suggest renting the pilot to get a bit of background information (although it's a bit slow) and owning seasons 1-3. Season 4 isn't quite as good as the first three, but it does have a few good episodes in it. The series wasn't as good after Claudia Christian and Bruce Boxleitner left the series, so I wouldn't recommend buying anything after season 4.

5 out of 5 stars Here There Be Shadows..........2007-03-24

Babylon 5 Season III continues to shed light on the ongoing adventures and parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major space station under Human control in neutral territory orbiting Epsilon 3.
The date is 2260, twelve years after the Earth-Minbari War, and representatives from the (remaining) four major space-faring races, the Centauri, Humans, Minbari, and the Vorlons, as well as numerous minor races have all gathered at Babylon 5 in a last effort at maintaining galactic peace. This peace, however, is long past now and Babylon 5 finds itself in the middle of the most deadly conflict the universe has seen to date... the Shadow War!
Season III has even managed to surpass the previous two seasons. Specifically:
1) The OUTSTANDING plot and subplots keep getting better and better!
2) The GREAT characters become more and more developed, and
3) That wonderful feeling of being ADDICTED to the show grows ever bigger!

Babylon 5 is a series definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful series, a little difficulty with the product........2007-02-12

I could write pages on how much I adore Babylon 5 but I'm not going to. The first product I received from Amazon was defective in that the sound was off in a few of the episodes. I couldn't tell you exactly what it sounded like but you'd know it if you heard it. In any case, when I put in my request for a replacement, my order was shipped out much more quickly than I expected and without the same glitch.

5 out of 5 stars shadow end.......2007-01-16

this series raises the tone slightly from 1 & 2 and presents a higher level of intregue & conclusions

5 out of 5 stars Babylon 5 - Season 3: the paragon of space Sci-Fi.......2007-01-08

If you already saw seasons 1 & 2 and liked them - there's no question: you will love seaon 3! The story you have seen unfold reaches a new level of intensity, and everything is coming together. With amazing character development, stunning space scenes, and thrilling plot, this season is possibly the best B5 season of all - and that in a series I would consider the very best Sci-Fi series created to date.

If you have not seen any Babylon 5, I recommend starting at the beginning. In many Sci-Fi series you can hop in somewhere and watch episode by episode. While this is possible with B5 due to completed mini-plot in each episode, one would miss the special allure of this marvelous series. The whole B5 universe and all the characters in it are part of a carefully crafted whole story. Each episode advances the global plot and each character. I found myself greatly disliking some characters on the onset of the series. Later, I could totally empathize with most (no matter how much I may have disagreed with their actions), and others changed so completely (yet believably) that they became some of my favorite characters.

In short: if you like Sci-Fi, treat yourself to this masterpiece. If I could only keep one TV-series of any kind: this would be it.

From the beginning, both were running out of time. The space station that was the last, best hope for peace was sooner or later certain to be eclipsed by new political coalitions and technical advances. And John Sheridan, who guided the massive freeport through its most tumultuous days, knew that his own fate had been inalterably prophesied. Now both storylines converge in a 22-episode final season (with dazzling Exclusive DVD Extras!) whose events also include Sheridan's attempts to wage peace for the Interstellar Alliance, the tragic fate of the telepaths and the ultimate fireball destruction of the outmoded station after it is declared to be a spaceway navigational hazard. You are cleared for final approach to Babylon 5. <BR />

Amazon.com

A disappointment after the superb two previous seasons, the final run of <I>Babylon 5</I> found Claudia Christian departed and Ivanova replaced by Captain Elizabeth Lochley (Tracy Scoggins), who in a soap-opera twist turned out to be Sheridan's first wife. Sheridan was promoted to President of the Interstellar Alliance and the action moved to a group of telepaths seeking sanctuary from the PSI-Corp on <I>B5</I>. Giving a prominent role to Patricia Tallman's Lyta Alexander, a love story for her was woven with the leader of the telepaths, Byron (Robin Atkin Downs). Meanwhile the aftermath of the Shadow War was explored as the origin of human telepaths became clear in "Secrets of the Soul," and the appearance of PSI-Corp's Bester (Walter Koenig) brought the plight of the refugees to a powerful close in "A Tragedy of Telepaths" and "Phoenix Rising."

This was immediately followed by a rare episode not written by J. Michael Straczynski. Much was expected of "Day of the Dead," penned by Neil Gaiman, the British creator of DC's landmark <I>Sandman</I> comic and graphic novel series. Yet despite a change of tone including a guest appearance by Penn & Teller as 23rd-century comedy favorites Rebo & Zooty, the story proved an incongruous side trip into an unexplained twilight zone of fantasy. As usual the season picked up toward the end, with a string of fine political episodes leading to "The Fall of Centauri Prime" and the haunting "Objects at Rest," in which Sheridan and Delenn leave <I>Babylon 5</I> for new quarters on Minbar.

The final episode, "Sleeping in Light," was directed by J. Michael Straczynski and made an epilogue to the series. Set 20 years later, after all the sound and fury this quiet, elegiac tale is the apotheosis of the love story that proved the balance to the tragedy of the preceding darkness. A personal story resolved against a background of the epic, at once transcendent, deeply human, and profoundly optimistic, "Sleeping in Light" is as moving as any hour in the history of television drama and a thoroughly satisfying conclusion to one of the greatest series ever made. <I>--Gary S. Dalkin</I>

5 out of 5 stars Babylon 5 Stars!.......2007-06-03

Season V of Babylon 5 brings to the screen the ongoing adventures and parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major space station in neutral space.
The year is 2262, and the Babylon 5 space station orbiting Epsilon 3 has become the temporary home for the representatives of the newly established Alliance while the permanent headquarters are under construction on planet Minbar. Though things should be quieting down now, more trouble is brewing and threatening galactic peace...
Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Jerry Doyle, Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the series is without a doubt guaranteed to provide hours of entertainment.
Regarding this season's developments, I must admit that I did not shed a tear seeing Ivanova go and I did find Lochley to be an acceptable replacement, if not an improvement.
Nevertheless, there were some unfortunate instances; Vir is just not himself after losing all that weight, and there are times when Lyta Alexander and Lennier evolve into characters that are not as likable as they once were.
Furthermore, Byron and his cult of rogue telepaths were ever annoying to the point that the Psi Corps became indeed "Mother" and "Father" as Al Bester put it so often.
Nevertheless, that is all so minor and insignificant compared to:
1) The OUTSTANDING plot and subplots,
2) The GREAT, overall, character development,
3) The last episode, which leaves you breathless and gasping for air, and
4) The wonderful feeling of being ADDICTED to the show and wanting more!

Babylon 5 is a series definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection (if you haven't done so already)!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best series, ever!.......2007-05-24

This series got better and better. It is well written, the characters are wonderful, well developed and well portrayed.

This, the planned final season, was a great conclusion and, as such, created a desire for more. The DVD collection fills the void in the universe left by such an excellent show.

5 out of 5 stars For John and Delenn Alone.......2007-02-08

Tracey Scoggins? What the ham sandwich were they thinking?! Sorry but if Ivonnova couldn't be Captain they could have gotten anyone else but Tracey Scoggins! I see that not even half way through season 5 she became nothing but a 2nd player.

This season has 5 stars for the sake of John and Delenn Alone. For that matter, the last episode is enough.

5 out of 5 stars Excelente, pero.......2007-01-03

Después de la guerra de sombras, esperaba que hubieran más cruces con Crusade pero no paso nada.
Y el último capítulo fue muy abrupto. Sin embargo es una serie imperdible de los '90 del siglo XX.

5 out of 5 stars No 3.......2006-11-06

overall the series maintains the high standard set by the whole series but this season does rush things toward the end ( maybe should have stretched it for another season.

Delenn's future love interest, Captain John Sheridan (Bruce Boxleitner) arrived on <I>Babylon 5</I> in the first episode of season 2, "Points of Departure." The show marked the handing over of command of <I>B5</I> to Sheridan from Commander Jeffery Sinclair, actor Michael O'Hare becoming a victim of studio politicians who wanted a bigger star in the leading role. This excellent installment also revealed more about why the Minbari surrendered to Earth at the Battle of the Line when they were on the verge of victory. "Revelations" explains that Sheridan's wife, Anna, died during an archaeological survey of the world Z'ha'dum, the name being just one of many references to Tolkien's the Lord of the Rings (the bridge at Khazad-Dum). "The Geometry of Shadows" introduced the Technomages, characters who featured more significantly in the ill-fated spinoff series <I>Crusade</I> (1999), while "The Coming of Shadows" proved to be <I>Babylon 5</I>'s finest hour to date. The story of political intrigue foreshadowing the fate of two of the major characters beat <I>Apollo 13</I>, <I>Toy Story</I>, <I>12 Monkeys</I>, and <I>Star Trek: Deep Space Nine</I> episode "The Visitor" to win the Hugo award for Best Dramatic Presentation at the 1996 World Science Fiction Convention and proved so powerful that J. Michael Straczynski included it in his <I>Complete Book of Scriptwriting</I>.

"And Now for a Word" took the unusual step of presenting a day-in-the-life of <I>B5</I> seen through the eyes of a TV news crew, just as the Narn declared war on the Centauri. The inclusion of a PSI-Corps commercial paid homage to Paul Verhoeven's satirical ads in <I>Robocop</I> (1987), while his later <I>Starship Troopers</I> (1997) seemed at times like a spoof of <I>B5</I>'s earnest space opera. In "In the Shadow of Z'ha'dum," Sheridan learns that Morden was on the ship on which Anna died; the episode sees the captain pushed to his limits by grief and determination to discover why Morden survived. Three exceptional shows conclude the season. The Narn-Centauri war escalates in "The Long, Twilight Struggle," Sheridan faces a most unusual ordeal in "Comes the Inquisitor," and in "The Fall of Night" all hope of peace is shattered as a nerve-racking assassination attempt reveals a startling secret about Ambassador Kosh. <I>--Gary S. Dalkin</I>

5 out of 5 stars They don't make them like this anymore........2007-05-12

The second season of Babylon 5 is one of the best sci fi out there. The main leads grow in such a way that even by the end of the season I felt a bit of sadness for Londo, even though he was responible for the near genocide of a whole race! The actors are so good and the storys so compelling, that outside of the 3rd season of STNG I would say that this is a good as it gets! I wish there was more tv like this on the air now!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Service.......2007-03-22

I have been slowly collecting all the Babylon 5 seasons, using coupons and discounts to get the best price. I bought this one from amazon because the price was lower than normal for amazon. These disk sets have a problem in that some times a disk or two becomes dislodged and floats around the case. This allows the disk to get scratched so that it will not play properly. So far this has happened everywhere i bought, and i had to return the disk set at least once before i had a good set. This is where amazon excells. There is no fee to return a damaged item for replacement (not true of other online sellers). Plus, the day i logged in and indicated i needed a replacement set, another set was shipped out to me and i had it in a few days, before i even mailed back the first shipment. Another seller took a month to proces my return and ship back a replacement, and i had to pay to return the damaged product. I would strongly recommend checking any of the Babylon 5 series disks closely (i fast forwarded each disk to check for places where it skipped or go stuck). This product has serious packaging issues, but amazon has you covered if there are any problems.

5 out of 5 stars Babylon 5 - The Complete Second Season.......2007-03-21

I have always enjoyed watching this series and have been waiting for the chance to be able to watch anytime I want. I plan on buying the whole set eventually.

5 out of 5 stars Could it get any more addictive? Probably not..........2007-03-19

An excellent series, Babylon 5, brings to the screen the parallel stories of prominent people aboard a major station under Human control in neutral space.
The setting is the Babylon 5 space station orbiting Epsilon 3. The date is 2259, eleven years after the Earth-Minbari War, and representatives from the five major space-faring races, the Centauri, Humans, Minbari, Narns, and the Vorlons, as well as numerous minor races have all gathered at B5 in a last effort at maintaining galactic peace. This peace, however, is in jeopardy when two of the major races resort to war...
Bruce Boxleitner, Mira Furlan, Andrea Thompson (who is HOT!!!), Andreas Katsulas, Peter Jurasik, and the rest of the cast, have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)! Very well written and very well presented, the series is without a doubt guaranteed to provide hours of entertainment.
The only setback is in relation to the not-so-hidden agenda of promoting a specific religion through Ivanova. What is the point? What a waste of precious minutes of an otherwise wonderful show.
Nevertheless, that is so minor and insignificant compared to:
1) The OUTSTANDING plot and subplots that keep getting better and better!
2) The GREAT characters (especially the aliens ones) that become more and more developed, and
3) The wonderful feeling of being ADDICTED to the show and wanting more!

Babylon 5 is a series definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

The surprising truth about Disney's 1982 computer-game fantasy is that it's still visually impressive (though technologically quaint by later high-definition standards) and a lot of fun. It's about a computer wizard named Flynn (Jeff Bridges) who is digitally broken down into a data stream by a villainous software pirate (David Warner) and reconstituted into the internal, 3-D graphical world of computers. It is there, in the blazingly colorful, geometrically intense landscapes of cyberspace, that Flynn joins forces with Tron (Bruce Boxleitner) to outmaneuver the Master Control program that holds them captive in the equivalent of a gigantic, infinitely challenging computer game. Disney's wizards used a variety of cinematic techniques and early-'80s state-of-the-art computer-generated graphics to accomplish their dynamic visual goals, and the result was a milestone in cyberentertainment, catering to technogeeks while providing a dazzling adventure for hackers and nonhackers alike. Appearing just in time to celebrate the nascent cyberpunk movement in science fiction, <I>Tron</I> received a decidedly mixed reaction when originally released, but has since become a high-tech favorite and a landmark in special effects, with a loyal following of fans. DVD is a perfect format for the movie's neon-glow color scheme, and the musical score by synthesizer pioneer Wendy Carlos is faithfully preserved on the digitally remastered soundtrack. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Together, they fight the ultimate battle with the MCP to decide the fate of both the electronic world and the real world!

4 out of 5 stars TRON: Way Ahead Of It's Time.......2007-06-17

Like "The Black Hole" three years before it, 1982's "TRON" was another Walt Disney sci-fi movie that did not get proper respect upon it's initial release, but has developed an avid cult following ever since. "TRON" tells the story of a young, hotshot computer programmer named Flynn (Jeff Bridges), who created a handful of popular video games for the company ENCOM but had his ideas stolen by a sneaky co-worker named Dillinger (David Warner), who subsequently rose to the Senior Executive position at the company, while Flynn was subsequently booted out and now makes his living running a video game arcade. With the aid of two friends, Alan (Bruce Boxleitner) and Lora (Cindy Morgan), Flynn breaks into ENCOM and attempts to retreive the evidence of Dillinger's crime, but gets detected by ENCOM's Master Control Program (a highly-advanced computer program with a mind---and voice---of it's own), which catches Flynn and beams him (ala Star Trek) *into* a computer, where computer programs have human feelings & physical bodies (in fact, they are the dopplegangers of the "users" who wrote them). Flynn is forced to fight for his life as a video game warrior in this vastly colorful, computerized world he finds himself trapped in, as he seeks a way back to his own world...."TRON" was the very first film to extensively use computer animation for it's visual effects, and it is without question a dazzling feast for the eyes. Writer/director Steven Lisberger and his production team created a fascinating, unique, *alive* world that has never been seen on the screen before or since. "TRON" also has going for it a brilliant, atmospheric score by Wendy Carlos (available on CD at last!), and terrific performances by Jeff Bridges as Flynn, and David Warner as the oily Dillinger (and his demented program counterpart SARK). Boxleitner, Morgan, Bernard Hughes and Dan Shor also lend good acting support in their roles. However, "TRON" is not a perfect movie. Lisberger's screenplay could've used some more dramatic weight, and somehow, the movie's finale feels rushed and doesn't quite pack the emotional punch that it should. But these mistakes are forgiveable. "TRON" is so much fun, that I don't really mind a less-than-perfect script or a rushed ending."TRON" was way---and I mean WAY---ahead of it's time, which may explain why the movie went sailing over the heads of some audience members & movie critics back in 1982 (although Siskel & Ebert, in particular, praised "TRON" to the hilt---thank you, Gene & Roger!). But the passing of time has been very kind to "TRON," as the film is now recognised as the landmark, groundbreaking sci-fi film that it is. This DVD edition of "TRON," with it's remastered print of the film, the excellent "Making Of" documentary, deleted scenes and other goodies, is wonderful to have, but I hope the folks at Disney will do the right thing and re-release "TRON" back into theaters, so everyone can experience this movie the way it was meant to be experienced. In the words of the late Gene Siskel, "TRON" is a whole lot of fun. It simply dazzles.

4 out of 5 stars This must be seen on the big screen to be fully appreciated........2007-06-01

You have to understand, I was about 12 years old when this first came out in theatres and I've already had a personal computer for a few years by then (got my first Atari 400 in 1980) and was definitely a computer geek, even then. To see this movie back then was almost beyond words, as it fired my imagination more than just about anything else had before or after. It was a great time - videogames were taking off, computers were taking off, and there was just a feeling in the air that anything could happen. This film was a perfect example of people taking these feelings to their extreme and no other movie takes me back to that era (except for maybe Wargames) better than Tron does.

Back then, a lot of people actually felt threatened by computers and this film did little to help that notion. Viewing Tron today, it may be hard for the younger set to see what the big deal was, but in 1982, this was probably just as mind-boggling to audiences as 2001 was when it came out in '68. I still remember being absolutely floored after seeing this the first time on the big screen...you have to remember, back in '82, there really WAS no CGI and the best graphics resolution on the best home PC or arcade game was not even as good as the original Gameboy. This movie pulled out all the stops and really showed the world what could be done with computer graphics and I feel that it was HUGELY influential in the development of CGI in the years to come.

Ok, the plot is kind of lame and there are a few lines in the script which are cringe-inducing when heard today (eg. "C'mon you SCSI data, be in there"), but I can forgive the writers for dropping a few buzzwords in the script, even if they didn't quite know what they meant. The acting is great - Jeff Bridges completely sells the movie and is solid, as usual, and David Warner is fantastic as Sark. Bruce Boxleitner was definitely cast against type but also did a great job and Cindy Morgan nailed her character as well. Barnard Hughes played his usual father-figure role to great effect as well.

After the lackluster original non-anamorphic DVD which was plagued by line noise, Disney has finally done right by Tron with this double-disc set. The Anamorphic picture looks about as good as possible and the colors really pop. The faces on the characters are a bit grainy due to the process used to make the film, but it's not a problem. The sound has been remixed to 5.1 (unlike the 4.0 of the previous release) but to my ears, for some reason the original DVD has much deeper bass - I'm not quite sure why. On the original DVD, the recognizers absolutely THUNDER, on this DVD, the effect is diminished somewhat.

There are also a ton of extras, the best of which is an absolutely incredible 88-minute making-of documentary which was obviously lovingly prepared and is almost as good as the film itself.

When you discover the actual work it took to create this movie, you realize that it was WAY ahead of it's time. And as I said, if you ever have a chance to see this on the big screen, jump at it.

Tron is a blast form the past. Awsome story its just a good SIFI movie. Tron is comming from the dawn of special effects. A simplely enjoyable. if you like stuff from the Early 90s and Late 80s this is the way to go. and the THXcertified audio is amazing. It takes this movie to the next level.

4 out of 5 stars Well Done!.......2007-05-14

The Babe is a great baseball movie with a few flaws, mostly in the embellishment of the true facts, but it's miles better than the 1948 movie with William Bendix as the Babe. John Goodman gives his all as he portrays Babe Ruth, a man who enjoyed life a little too much. Other strong performances are given by Kelly McGillis, James Cromwell & Bruce Boxleitner. I recommend this film.

4 out of 5 stars Well done.......2007-04-04

John Goodman's role is so realistic that I thought I was seeing the Babe many times! He is outstanding in his role as Babe Ruth. Hollywoood liberties, sure ...... but an excellent story and a look at an Baseball hero ........... A must for baseball fans.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Baseball Movie........2006-08-10

A highly enjoyable baseball movie. John Goodman give a good potrayal of the famous slugger. From his rookie year with the Boston Red Sox,the New York Yankees, and his retirement from the Boston Braves.Watch how he responds to a bad call from the plate umpire, saying he ought to get his eyes and ears checked.Babe Ruth was a pitcher with the Boston Red Sox,and in his last year with the Boston Braves, but played outfield with the New York Yankess. Now maybe the film exaggerates the antics of Ruth, but Goodman's potrayal makes them beliveable.

2 out of 5 stars too close to a caricature.......2006-05-11

Be advised that after 45 minutes of the movie my 8 year-old son and I gave up. Goodman seems to have been given the license to "go for broke" with a "larger than life" approach, that leaves little for the viewer to consider of Ruth's actual life. With the broadest of strokes, Goodman plays Ruth self-consciously; the mis-en-scenes are without any surprises and Hollywood-predictable.

Too little was shown to give us the sense of Ruth-as-athlete and the milieu of early 20th century baseball, a fascinating story that awaited telling but missed the opportunity here.

3 out of 5 stars Good baseball movie, but not what it should have been.......2006-03-21

Probably the most famous baseball player of all-time, Babe Ruth should definitely have had a movie done about him, and "The Babe" is a decent effort, but is not without flaws. First, there are many inaccuracies in this movie, but I won't go into that too deep. At the end of the movie (1936), The Babe is spitting up blood during the game between the Braves and the Pirates, but Ruth did not pass away from cancer until 1948. Certainly Ruth did not have cancer in 1936.. There's many other things, but I don't need to list them all.

But the thing that really bothered me about this movie is that Ruth is portrayed as nothing more than a bumbling idiot while he was with the Red Sox. While this is good for a few laughs, it really took away from my enjoyment of the first half of the movie. I'm thinking "THIS guy is Babe Ruth??" However, as soon as Ruth is sold to the Yankees, he becomes much more intelligent and doesn't act like a complete dumba$$ all of the time. At this point, the movie takes a much more serious turn, and in my opinion, the last half of the movie is EXCELLENT. The film delves into the Babe's issues both on and off the field, and definitely has some touching moments, and a strong finish to the movie. Too bad the first half of the movie was so silly.. So overall, 1 star for the first half of the movie, 5 stars for the second half, for a final score of 3 stars.

I thought that John Goodman was very good as The Babe, although yes, he was much larger (weight) than Babe Ruth really was at any point in his life, but let's not get hung up on details. Goodman was a good fit for the part, and Kelly McGillis was excellent in the supporting role of Claire Hudson.

All of that said, if you're a true baseball historian, you will find plenty to complain about with "The Babe", but if you just want a fun baseball movie to watch, then I would definitely recommend it. I would hope that someday a movie is made about Babe Ruth that is more historically accurate, and has a much more grand feel like the movie 61*, because this telling of Babe Ruth's life just isn't quite the home run that it should have been.

5 out of 5 stars What Great Movie Kuffs........2007-02-13

I forgot how funny this movie is kinda of a ferris bueller/fletch comedy thriller keep you on the edge of your seat while laughing too what a great movie. supporting cast is wonderful in this film you'll just love it.

It's PG-13 For Lauguage , Action Violence.

2 out of 5 stars Time travel back to the early to mid 1980's.......2007-01-04

Now exceeding 20 years, this 1980's movie may attract
viewers on account of the big-name actress Ashley Judd in
it, although in reality she's shown for less than 90
seconds in the entire movie, and this in an action
sequence, showing a paint shop getting drilled with
machine gun fire. In that respect, KUFFS will be a major
disappointment for those expecting Judd to be at the
center stage.

In reality, the protagonist is the Jack Nicholson wannabe
or hopeful of the time, Christian Slater as well as the
city of San Francisco. Much like the other movie, also in
San Francisco, (TWISTED with Ashley Judd), that city is
prominently shown in various aspects, namely the world
reknowned bridge, and some surroundings of the area,
parks, hills, etc.

The story is not entirely serious, which is a benefit,
considering most people going to the movies want to relax,
so in this sense, the picture is successful, if not for
the not tasteless but redundant nudity involving Slater
and the lovely and young Milla Jovovich, playing his girlfriend.

The movie, from a visual point of view, works extremely
well, with many varied, sharp, colored and interesting
streets, buildings and filming locations chosen. Anyone
not having done tourism in that city or area will benefit,
much like that which is the case in another movie, showing
Raleigh, NC, "Kiss the Girls" with Morgan Freeman, for example.

There is a focus on the clothes people wear, obviously, as
the characters seem to only wear pastel-colored items that many
for some were trendy at the time, as made clear from other
movies, such as Miami Vice, also from the 80's, for example.
Ironically, in the opening sequence, the bad guy has his mug
shot stenciled onto his pastel T-Shirt, yet is covering his
face with a scarf, to avoid being later recognized. How
his victims would fail to remember to police the image seen on his
T-Shirt, to track him down, is less understood.

The weak spot, clearly, is the music, as it is had considerably
aged and seems considerably unsophisticated. In reality, the music may
or may not be a liability, considering often there's a
discrepancy in tastes and musical experience among the
audience, regardless of age, who themselves are very differnet
from one another.

A a recurring jingle is obviously inspired from the one heard
on Beverly Hills Cop, a big commercial success at about the
same year KUFFS was released.

Overall, KUFFS completely wasted Judd's acting talents, as
only 90 seconds were shown. On the other hand, for those
wanting a light-hearted time travel back to the early to
mid 1980's this is not a bad place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Kuffs.......2006-01-15

This is a great Mid 90s movie.

5 out of 5 stars Sadly Overlooked Action Adventure Comedy.......2005-01-16

Christian Slater's character reminds me of a young Jack Nicholson, who replaces his brother on the Police Force after he is murdered. I was surprised that he didn't become as popular as Tom Cruise after this film was released in 1992, but he had a few personal issues during the 90s that stalled his career. I think he's a better actor than most people realize, with much more talent than making below average movies like "Broken Arrow".

4 out of 5 stars 7 out of 10.......2004-08-18

Kuffs is a highly enjoyable Christian Slater film. Great narration. Very quirky ideas. Clever at a lot of times. Great acting by Christian Slater. There is a certain "Johnny Depp" quality about Christian Slater when I saw this film. He pulled it off great. Great comedy. Very good lessons taught here also. Consider the film as a smart comedy about being stupid but lucky. A couple highest points in this film were the gunshot wound lesson and the subtitles while being duct taped. There are other great moments. It is very unpredictable and fun movie to watch. This movie has solidified me as a great Christian Slater fan. Although it was made in 1992, I find it hard to believe that I haven't seen films like this. That is amazing. This kind of thing just tells me that Hollywood is releasing the wrong kinds of films. Kudos to Bruce Evans for witty direction.

Description

The Rutland Dam is "a titanic waiting to happen." A melting snow pack, torrential rains, and a rising reservoir threaten to put the small town under millions of gallons of water. A tragic accident at the dam alerts disgraced architect David Powell (Joe Lando) to the impending danger, but the corrupt construction company president (Bruce Boxleitner) does his best to discredit him. David must convince his estranged wife, Rutland's acting mayor (Michele Greene), and his son, an architectural apprentice at the dam, that the town must be evacuated. Time is running out, the water is rising, and Rutland could be submerged in a flash!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars OPEN THE FLOOD GATES.......2006-04-04

This made for TV disaster flick has all the ingredients expected:
1. Three former TV Stars (Joe Lando from DR. QUINN; Bruce Boxleitner from SCARECROW AND MRS. KING and Michelle Greene from LA LAW).
2. A corporate baddy whose greed has led to inferior construction of the dam.
3. A broken family with a father who hasn't kept in touch with his child.
4. Stubborn lawmen who answer to money.
5. Lots of oh my Goodness moments.
6. A strongwilled architect who tries to warn everyone of the impending dangers.
7. Average special effects.
But, in spite of its lack of originality, the direction and acting are good, with Greene doing a nice job as the mother/substitute mayor, etc.
A little above average for movies of this type.

5 out of 5 stars Killer Flood : The Day the Dam Broke.......2005-09-19

I thought this film was very well done. I really enjoyed it and I thought that the acting and the special effects were great.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty good disaster flick; better than many..........2005-04-06

This is very far from the worst of disaster flicks. It has a coherent plot, a nasty villain, and heroic though flawed heroes. One might be impelled to ask whether the effects or the talent had the lowest budget, but given that the film is pretty good.

The movie IS satisfying. It procedes from beginning to end with a rather classic inevitability. Unlike so many films in its genre, the heroes do NOT forsake their responsible positions of authority in order to perform personal quests (for examples of this, see "The Big One," "Aftershock," and "The Day After Tomorrow"--in all of these, the leading characters stop their formal functions midway in order to rescue family members).

One might question the actions of some characters (hide in a dumpster when about to be engulfed by a kazillion tons of water?), but there is a continuity of tragic inevitability throughout the proceedings. Also, the "good guys" are pretty likable. That certainly helps in the enjoyment of the movie.

For folks "into" disaster films, will say this is a must-see.
