In his most effective thriller since Enemy of the State, Tony Scott makes time travel seem plausible. It helps that his New Orleans hero, ATF agent Doug Carlin (Denzel Washington in his third go-round with the director), spends more time in the present than the past. In order to catch a terrorist, FBI Agent Pryzwarra (Val Kilmer) invites Carlin to join forces. They have the technology to see the past. He has the expertise to interpret the data. Unfortunately, the bomb has already gone off and hundreds of ferry passengers have died. Then there's the body of a beautiful woman, Claire Kuchever (Paula Patton, Idlewild), that turns up in the vicinity of the blast. Evidence indicates she was killed beforehand. Since the FBI enables him to observe Claire prior to her murder, Carlin gets to know what she was like and finds himself falling in love. He becomes convinced that the only way to solve the case--and prove her innocence--is to travel to the past. But as Pryzwarra's colleague, Denny (Adam Goldberg), argues, "You cannot go back in time. It's physically impossible." Or so he says. Déjà Vu is constructed around a clever script and executed by a top-notch cast, notably Washington, Patton, and an eerie Jim Caviezel (miles away from Passion of the Christ). In shedding the excesses of recent years--the sadism of Man on Fire and weirdness of Tarantino favorite Domino--Scott re-affirms his rep as one of the action movie's finest practitioners. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

4 out of 5 stars A pretty interesting take on reaching back into the past to investigate the present.......2007-06-20

Denzel Washington always makes me want to believe in any movie he is in. Here he plays ATF agent Doug Carlin who is brought in to investigate a ferry bombing that killed more than 500 people. Some odd details start bothering him including the body of Caire Kuchever (played very well by the beautiful Paula Patton). At first she looks like another victim of the blast on the ferry, but Agent Carlin notices some things that don't match up.

Agent Pryzwarra (a nicely done turn by Val Kilmer) brings Carlin into a special investigative unit that has a special tool to view a stream from the past. I can't get into details of this team or much more of the movie because unraveling it is part of the fun of the film. You know from the title of the film that it has something to do with reliving the past, but how this film does it is pretty fresh. There is one very cool car chase that includes trying to drive in the present to keep in view the villain in a car from the past and is something I hadn't seen before.

Yes, there are things in the plot that require artificial limits on things and require the cast to say and not say or do or not do things that would make things much more mundane and realistic, but still, as a romantic thriller, it is a pretty good entertainment. And they do pull things together more neatly than one might expect from the early scenes.

So, enjoy the film. It is a pretty good way to have some fun.

3 out of 5 stars Not A Cool Movie.......2007-06-20

Denzel Washington in this movie is way too emotional and not nearly as cool as in other movies like "Training Day". He was basically a stalker!

Another thing I didn't like about this movie is the computer graphics. The director must have believed we will think the past viewer CG so cool and like it so much that he used it over and over again. On the contrary, I feel slightly insulted to be thought of that way. I like computer graphics in movies that are used to reproduce reality to show spectacular scenes that cannot be shot otherwise, like those in Star Wars episodes. However, I loath CG used as if it were something cool, e.g. CG on computer user-interface. When PCs are so ubiquitous these days everybody can tell a good user-interface from a bad one. And bad ones are not cool to me, no matter how much computer graphics you put into it. They should have just showed the past viewer as a Windows-based application as would be developed in research institutions in reality today.

1 out of 5 stars I know what Deja Vu 2 will be!.......2007-06-17

This 'Time-Machine' gets into the hands of the US government.
They make one that is about a 100 times larger, consisting therefore, of 100 times more bolts, screws and monitor screens. (surely the US government will be able to afford that)

Then, (here comes the exciting part) President Bush come up with the brightest idea he has ever come up with in his presidential carreer. He sends groups of well-trained specialists (bringing high tech technology with them) that will prevent all the evil that has ever infected the history of humanity.
So, one group to prevent 911, one group to prevent WorldWar2, another to prevent WorldWar1, another to prevent poverty, and so on... Now the great thing is, it doesn't matter if these specialist groups die while on their mission in the past because they will be alive in the future anyways. (Like denzel washington, who still was alive in the end of the movie)

Ultimately, the result is a dreamworld. A world with no terrorism, war or anything evil in large scale. Paradise.

Everyone lives happily ever after. The end of the Movie.

But wait a second, is time travel really possible? You never know what humans will be able to do in the future...

Switch on CNN or any international news program and you will find out that DejaVu 2 might be a silly daydream. Today, there is more terror and evil than ever. Nobody has ever come from the future to help us eliminate all this terror for us.
If time travel was possible, our world would have been eliminated of evil by now...

4 out of 5 stars Wild, Wild, WILD ride...and a kicker ending.......2007-06-17

OK -- I did not totally get all the sci fi stuff, but it didn't matter in the whole scheme of things. This movie left me breathless.

Denzel Washington plays a sharp ATF Agent investigating a ferry explosion which left over 500 people dead. He figures out (rather quickly) that the ferry disaster is connected to a seemingly unrelated murder of a young woman whose body washed up on shore shortly BEFORE the explosion. He eventually joins a special "surveillance" team that has technology that I cannot even begin to explain accurately here. In a nutshell, they are able to use satellite imagery to recreate everything that took place 4 days and 6 hours ago, from every vantage point. As the team uses this technology to find the identity of the person who blew up the ferry, Denzel's character devises ways to maximize its potential to save lives. It's already been mentioned in several reviews that he travels back in time, so that's no surprise, but what he does when he gets there will blow you away (no pun intended...sorry.)

This is a WILD ride...there's no need to understand the science behind the technology, the murder mystery/suspense is enough to grab you for the duration of the movie. It is extremely fast-paced and features excellent (beyond excellent, really) acting by Denzel. The ending totally blew me away, although I really didn't get that either! Highly recommend.

4 out of 5 stars Great Thriller - Non stop intrigue and suspense.......2007-06-15

Denzel Washington plays Agent Carlin, a sharp, valiant AFT agent who is so extraordinary talented, that he can analyze a crime scene with little more than a glance or quick walk-through.

These talents come in handy when a ferry, full of innocent people suddenly explodes near New Orleans. The terrorist who sent the 500+ people to their fiery deaths filled up an SUV with explosives and all of the evidence seems to have been blown sky high.

That is, until Carlin checks his voice mail and discovers a phonecall that took place shortly before the explosion. The phonecall would be of little consequence if not for the fact that the young woman who made the phonecall washed up on shore dead, but was not a victim of the explosion.

A little ingenius reasoning in typical Denzel fashion comes to the conclusion that the killer of this young woman is also the terrorist. But there isn't enough evidence to find this man/woman. Impressed by Carlin's skills, he is recruited into an elite group of investigators bent on finding the mysterious terrorist before he permanently escapes or strikes again.

Carlin finds out that the investigators have a set up of high tech imaging equipment that might just get a glimpse of the young woman who washed up dead, or, better yet, her killer. But something happens, the plot takes several twists and Carlin starts to experience a little Deja Vu as he visits the key sites of the investigation.

He begins to fall in love with the images of the woman who was murdered and starts to doubt the imaging equipment is really what they say it is. You might just think that Carlin is the terrorist, with his odd recollection of the crime scene, and you may or may not be right. Perhaps there is a conspiracy that strikes at the very heart of America, or perhaps it is something else entirely. What is certain, is that the evil is efficient and frightening and might be deeper and darker than a single warped mind.

For a few moments, I thought the the investigation began to question the very essence of time and space and thought I had it all figured out. I was wrong.

The acting is superb, the plot twists keep the viewer glued to the seat, and there is sporadic action that is always well done. For those who like suspense, don't miss this one. The actors are well selected for their roles, the cinematography conveys an action filled and mysterious environment to near perfection, and the dialogue is neither excessive nor insufficient. The movie is well balanced and well put together for a nail biting Saturday night.

The ending has a prophetic message. Like many unusual endings, there are some who may leave unsatisfied. They prefer the predictable, stereotype image that we have grown accustomed to. I say, plot twists and suprises are welcome, after all, this is a thriller.

When released in December 2000, <I>Thirteen Days</I> was pummeled for taking liberties with the facts of the Cuban missile crisis and smothering its compelling drama with phony Boston accents by its primary stars. More tolerant critics hailed it as one of the year's best films, and that's the opinion to believe for anyone who enjoys taut, intelligent political thrillers. For those too young to relate directly to the timeless urgency of the crisis that played out over 13 days in October 1962, <I>Thirteen Days</I> joins the classic TV treatment <I>The Missiles of October</I> (1973) as an intense and thought-provoking study of leadership under pressure.

The film (and costar-coproducer Kevin Costner) drew criticism for fictionally enhancing the White House role of presidential aide Kenneth O'Donnell, but while Costner's Boston accent may be grating, his fine performance as O'Donnell offers expert witness to the crisis, its nerve-wracking escalation, and the efforts of John F. Kennedy (Bruce Greenwood) and Robert F. Kennedy (Steven Culp) to negotiate a peaceful settlement with Russia. While Soviet missiles approach operational status in Cuba, director Roger Donaldson (who directed Costner in <I>No Way Out</I>) cuts to exciting U.S. Navy flights over the missile site, ramping up the tension that history itself provided. Donaldson's occasional use of black and white is self-consciously distracting, and he's further guilty of allowing a shrillness (along with repetitive, ominous shots of nuclear explosions) to invade the urgency of David Self's screenplay. Still, as Hollywood history lessons go, <I>Thirteen Days</I> is riveting stuff. You may find yourself wondering what might happen if reality presented a repeat scenario under less intelligent leadership. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Brings back memories. I was in SAC at the time and we were really close to going to nuclear war. After my first shift I went home and nailed G.I. blankets over the windows. I figured if the Russians were as accurate as WE thought there might be a lot of lying glass. If they were as good as THEY said they were I knew it wouldn't matter.

I could easily visualize the events in the movie happening as they were portrayed.

5 out of 5 stars This really tells how close to nuclear war we came .......2007-05-31

I thought that this was a very well made film that tells how close to nuclear war we came. I knew that this was kind of a scary time in the history of our country but i wasnt aware of how scary it was intil i saw this. This Was a well made film and the acting was quite good.Rather you are Republican or Democrate you need to see this film.

3 out of 5 stars A decent film which could have been even better.......2007-05-24

A film that takes place during what has become known as "the Cuban Missile Crisis", an event which is not only a harrowing chapter for the United States, but potentially for human civilization as well. This important historical period is a interesting and fascinating subject, centered around then-President John F. Kennedy's handling of the extremely tense situation whereby the Soviet Union was shipping and basing medium-range missiles capable of reaching the continental United States from the proxy regime of Cuba.

Although this is excellent subject matter for a movie, unfortunately it is just a backdrop for the film THIRTEEN DAYS, which focuses on Kenny O'Connell (Kevin Costner), a friend and political advisor to JFK. In spite of the gravity of the Crisis, the film spends too much time centered around someone not deserving of being the subject of the film. O'Connell's character is not as interesting as the events unfolding around him, and not really compelling enough to warrant the attention, which would have been better spent on JFK and the confrontation and the Soviet perspective. Further, Costner's attempt at a genuine Yankee (Massachusetts) accent is obvious and labored and ultimately unconvincing. The whole thing comes off as a hint of a vanity project for Costner.

Among the film's strengths includes Bruce Greenwood doing arguably the best portrayal of JFK to date depicted on film or TV. The actor (Steven Culp) playing Bobby Kennedy was also a good pick and did a fine job in his limited role, and Dylan Baker gave an interesting performance as SecDef Robert McNamara.

The best parts of the film were the two marvelous aerial scenes: the first featuring the 2-ship formation of RF-8 aircraft doing their high-speed, low-level recon of the Cuban missile sites; the second featuring the dramatization of Maj. Rudolph Anderson's fateful mission. This was a compelling and tense sequence which completely draws the viewer in, even though the heartbreaking outcome was already known ahead of time.

All in all, it was a decent film which could have been better if it concentrated on where the more compelling interest, characters, and actions were.

5 out of 5 stars Suspenseful.......2007-05-16

Great movie that will keep you on the edge of your seat. As history is recounted of this intense and highly-pressurized situation of the Cuban Missile Crisis, the viewer is entertained and educated.

Authentic in costume and dialect, this movie brings you back to the time when John F. Kennedy was in office, and one of the most important decisions he and his advisors made and took action on during his presidency. Kevin Costner is good in his role as the lead actor but a supporting character to JFK himself.

4 out of 5 stars Whew, That Was Close!.......2007-05-05

Kevin Costner's gotten such a bad rap lately that I was a little nervous about this one (though I loved "Bull Durham" and have liked some other Costner flicks "Field of Dreams", "Tin Cup", "Dances with Wolves"). Costner produced and starred in this historical drama about the Cuban missile crisis of October 1962. Director Roger Donaldson gets great credit for creating a "edge of the seat" drama about events where the outcome is well known--JFK worked out a deal with Khruschev, the missiles went back to Russia, and Cuba remains anathema, albeit uninvaded, today.

The suspense builds as JFK and his team figure out how to respond to the presence of nuclear missiles in Cuba that initially put about 100,000,000 Americans in the path of destruction. The military favors a "hit", which is presented as the "only solution" on many occasions. But JFK insists that another solution be developed, which eventually is unearthed by Secretary of Defense McNamara and then implemented with great uncertainty as to how it will work.

High points are Bruce Greenwood's understated performance as JFK (he even works in the back problem); Steven Culp's eerie resemblance to and electric performance as RFK (Emilio Estevez should have cast him as "Bobby" and redone his lame film); and an equally fine performance from the actor playing McNamara (whom the casting, makeup and wardrobe people have captured perfectly). We also get to see a "Kennedy"--actor Christopher Lawford (son of Peter Lawford and Patricia Kennedy) as a Navy captain.

Low points are Costner's annoying attempt at a Boston accent as he plays presidential aide and Harvard buddy Kevin O'Donnell (although the story is so engrossing that you soon are able to ignore it), and Donaldson's use of black-and-white film for several scenes (mostly near the beginning and end) for no apparent reason (maybe to give the movie a documentary feel--in any event, I thought it was unnecessary). Exposure to the Soviet viewpoint is limited to a couple of scenes involving their UN Ambassador and Ambassador to the US. We probably could have traded a couple of scenes with Costner's family for a "look" at the Soviet machinations during the crisis, which are depicted entirely as the subject of analysis and conjecture by the President, his aides, the CIA and the military.

The movie also made me think of what a great idea it is to have civilian control of the military. "Cooler heads", thinking with broader perspective than the mission-focused military brass, averted World War III and a possible nuclear catastrophe in this case. Of course, it can cut the other way too, as the civilian leadership that started the current Iraq War has demonstrated.

4 out of 5 stars A different approach to a typical "action movie"..........2007-05-17

I watched the blu-ray version of this film, and the picture is stunning. Color saturation, black levels and sheer image crispness make this movie one of the finest i've seen yet on blu-ray. As for the movie's story it's pretty simple. Washington is an atf-agent sent to investigate a bombing aboard a New Orleans ferry where he meets Val Kilmer's character. Kilmer's an fbi agent who is in charge of a top secret "surveilance" project assined to this case as well. It's pretty clear early on that there is going to be some time travel in this flick, especially with a title like "Deja-vu". But the director knows how implausible this premise is, and tries hard to pull the viewer into the emotional side of this bombing first. This works with a lot of help from Washington's conviction to a beautiful victim of the attack...or is she? All the little clues of her death & the case in general don't add up. This combined with Denzel's performance makes the viewer care. It makes us want to stop this thing before it ever happens. I could empathize with Washington's desperation to try anything to help the girl, and of course stop this 'terrorist attack'. It's at this point where the film draws you into the techincal side of how Kilmer's fbi-team accidentally figured out a way to witness the crime scene before it actually happens...hmm. Anyhow, there are some nifty action pieces a lot of which revolve around the premise that all the events leading up to the attack are intertwined. True, there are a few times where whats happening onscreen can be a little confusing. That's okay. The movie-goer is supposed to be in a flux at these times. It's all going somewhere, so don't overthink it. One could endlessly analyze all of the parallels of time-travel until...well, the end of time, (ha-ha)...instead, just roll with the premise of this film, and have fun. It's a typical good-guy/bad-guy action movie, but with a fresh approach to the genre.

As paranoid cop Del Spooner, Will Smith (<I>Independence Day</I>, <I>Men in Black</I>) displays both his trademark quips and some impressive pectoral muscles in <I>I, Robot</I>. Only Spooner suspects that the robots that provide the near future with menial labor are going to turn on mankind--he's just not sure how. When a leading roboticist dies suspiciously, Spooner pursues a trail that may prove his suspicions. Don't expect much of a connection to Isaac Asimov's classic science fiction stories; <I>I, Robot</I>, the action movie, isn't prepared for any ruminations on the significance of artificial intelligence. This likable, efficient movie won't break any new ground, but it does have an idea or two to accompany its jolts and thrills, which puts it ahead of most recent action flicks. Also featuring Bridget Moynahan (<I>The Sum of All Fears</I>), Bruce Greenwood (<I>The Sweet Hereafter</I>), and James Cromwell (<I>Babe</I>, <I>LA Confidential</I>). <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Description

In the year 2035, technology and robots are a trusted part of everyday life. But that trust is broken when a scientist is found dead and a skeptical detective (Smith) believes that a robot is responsible. Bridget Moynahan co-stars in this high-tech action thriller that questions whether technology will ultimately lead to mankind's salvation . . . or annihilation.

2 out of 5 stars The Fresh Prince vs. I Robot's. (Now it's on.).......2007-06-17

I recently had the opportunity to view the film I, Robot, or Short Circuit 3 as it has come to be known by the Ft. Collins cultural elite. Although this movie is set 30 years in the future, Detective Del Spooner's (Will Smith) jokes and witty antics keep with the times and never fail to elicit uproarious laughter. I guess phrases like "Oh, hell no" and "Now that's what I'm talkin' bout" are timeless comic masterpieces. Don't let the Fresh Prince's diction fool you, this movie pushes as many P.C. hot buttons as Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 and Mel Gibson's recent emotional masterpiece Lethal Weapon 4. I, Robot exemplifies a tried and true statement: when there are a lot of fancy robots in the future, all types of ill stuff will happen. Sure it's the same lesson we learned in The Terminator trilogy but let's face it, jokes and robots never really get old. The producers certainly did their homework in taking some ingredients from other popular sci-fi movies to complete their futuristic recipe for 100% action. A certain scene comes to mind when Will Smith must traverse a giant staircase, pure Ghostbusters. They might as well have suited him with a proton pack and warned him of the dire consequences that may arise by crossing the streams. I guess I can't argue with success. Does the film do its job? While I wasn't impressed very much -- and I am an avid fan of the Bad Boys films -- I have a good feeling that the younger crowd got the message loud and clear. As I was leaving the theater with a few friends, some teenagers in a futuristic looking Subaru yelled swear words at us and drove somewhat recklessly thereafter. (It should be noted that one of us looks strikingly similar to a robot.) They were obviously fired up by what they had just seen and had taken notes from a few of the car chase segments in the film. My fellow theater goers and I shook our heads and laughed: These kids today have no idea, one little fight and your mom may get scared, then you're moving with your auntsie and uncle to Bel-Air.

Grade C-, spend 7 dollars on one of those hats that make it look like there is an arrow through your head instead.

3 out of 5 stars Nice special effects, somewhat implausible plot.......2007-06-17

I was inherently suspicious of this film, having heard that only about five percent of it had anything whatever to do with Asimov's novel. Taking it on its own terms, though, it's really not a bad hour and fifty minutes of escapism. Will Smith plays Detective Spooner, a man with a bias against robots generally, even though he turns out to be partly bionic himself. The principal architect of the positronic robot revolution -- there's one for every five humans, now -- has apparently committed suicide but Spooner becomes convinced he was killed by one of the new generation of robots U.S.R. is about to release on the market. Asimov's Three Laws don't allow that, but (of course), a way has been found around that little problem. Aside from the fact that the laws even of Newtonian physics are ignored, and that Spooner's weapons seem to hold many thousands of bullets, the gymnastics of the big climatic scene are no more implausible than those in Star Wars. Nice CGI, too.

5 out of 5 stars Daring Racial Theme.......2007-05-01

I am not quite sure if everyone picked up the daring racial theme in this movie. The robots operate as a type of slave society on which humans rely, much like ancient Rome or America as a developing nation. Keep in mind that not only did the economy of the Old South depend on black slavery but Yankee trading firms greatly strengthened their capital base through the well-known "triangular trade", in which captured Africans would be transported across the Atlantic and sold at great profit.

So, here we are in the future with robots now the subject class. Will Smith plays the standard Black American action hero. However, instead of sympathizing with the robots, his character appears to be working out some sort of vendetta toward them -- and prejudice. Detective Spooner is right to suspect a robot uprising but his motives hardly seem pure.

At the end of the movie, we see that Detective Spooner's hostility toward the robots is not because they are different from him but because they are too similar. "I, Robot" rejects the standard movie sentimentality toward Black American males and holds its protagonist up to an unsparing moral judgment.

5 out of 5 stars More than meets the eye..........2007-04-29

I'm not a devotee of Will Smith/Asimov/Sci-fi nor a film buff, so there's no reason for me to prefer this kind of film, or bring any bias or preconceived baggage to watching it, and I rented it originally. However, I have to say this is a thoroughly absorbing, thought provoking and intelligent film which, for these reasons, kept me entertained right from the start - and isn't that the whole point? The film works on many levels, from an appreciation of the superb set design, CGI design and special effects (so good that they sometimes detract from the storyline as your chin hits the floor in amazement!), good dialogue, great action sequences, an excellent performance from Will Smith, and a central character that can draw out your sympathy and even steps it up as the film progresses, and is the real star of the whole show, having to face the ultimate choice each of us must make - choosing one's own destiny.

If you haven't seen it, I envy you. And yes, I have bought a copy. If you only watch it once, you'll miss so much.

4 out of 5 stars A good Will Smith movie.......2007-03-29

Will Smith shows a little more maturity in this one and is good as a robot-hating detective on a case that implicates a robot in a murder, something robots are not supposed to be able to do. Alan Tudyk's portrayal as Sonny, the robot with its own personality that can choose not to obey the three laws was really good. He really is the soul of the film.

I admire the fact that director Alex Proyas tried to blend a good science fiction story with a popcorn movie mentality, although it falls well short of being a classic because of that. Even the special effects, the fights, and the bots were all good. This is one of Smith's better movies (up there with Independence Day). The film works, but one wonders what could have been if Smith didn't always try for a laugh, or if they went for a darker feel. However, despite those problems, it was a fun film.

Beginning its six-year run in 1982, <I>St. Elsewhere</I> was neither television's first ensemble medical drama nor, heaven knows, its last. Yet this four-disc set of all 22 episodes from the first season is a reminder that this was, and still is, one of the very best. Even now, when "reality" programming blights the landscape like some biblical plague, doc, cop, and lawyer shows remain staples of the medium, and while the likes of <I>C.S.I.</I>, <I>E.R.</I>, and <I>Grey's Anatomy</I> have it all over <I>St. Elsewhere</I> in the sizzle department--the production values are much flashier, the content sexier, more graphic, and faster-moving, the technology both in front of and behind the camera light years more sophisticated--the older show, despite its somewhat cheesy '70s vibe, is the hands-down winner when it comes to the actual steak. That's because it does it the old-fashioned way: by relying on good writing, vividly-drawn, identifiable characters, and excellent performances by an eye-opening group of actors.

Co-creators Joshua Brand and John Falsey's pilot episode, which establishes the scene at Boston's St. Eligius Hospital (mocked as "St. Elsewhere" due to its rundown facilities and reputation as a "dumping ground" for the poor and disenfranchised), isn't especially promising. While we can see right away that the show sports a lighter, more humorous tone than others of its genre, the direction is static, the acting and dialogue are often stiff, and what passes for "chaos" is pretty tame. But it hits its stride almost immediately thereafter, as the characters (including Howie Mandel's wisecracking Dr. Fiscus, David Morse's driven, committed Dr. Morrison, William Daniels' egotistical, pompous Dr. Craig, and Ed Begley, Jr.'s nerdy Dr. Ehrlich) are more fully realized. The cast, in fact, may be the most impressive ever assembled for a TV program: in the first season alone, the list of actors with regular, recurring, and one-shot appearances includes future movie stars Denzel Washington (a regular, but his role is minor), Tim Robbins, Ally Sheedy, Christopher Guest, Laraine Newman, Ray Liotta, Tom Hulce, Michael Madsen, and Rae Dawn Chong. Sure, some of the multiple storylines are dated: the handling of issues like gun control, immigration, and terrorism seems almost quaint by today's standards, and a running gag concerning ladies man Dr. Samuels' (David Birney) having to inform his many lovers that he has gonorrhea comes off as tasteless and unfunny, notwithstanding that era's low awareness of AIDS and other STDs. But on the whole, this <I>St. Elsewhere</I> set (extras include audio commentary for "Cora and Arnie," plus four featurettes) is a reminder of episodic TV at its best. <I>--Sam Graham</I>

Description

Over its six-season run, the ground-breaking, critically acclaimed St. Elsewhere was nominated for over 60 Emmy Awards, winning 13 of them! This remarkable series, with its unique blend of intense medical drama, off-beat humor and imaginative storytelling, paved the way for later TV classics such as E.R. and Chicago Hope, while introducing America to future superstars Mark Harmon, Howie Mandel, and Oscar(r)-winner* Denzel Washington. Eccentric, insightful, and intelligent, St. Elsewhere is considered to be one of the best dramas ever to air on broadcast television.

5 out of 5 stars Great Show!!.......2007-06-19

St. Elsewhere is one of the best series ever, I bought the 1st season a few while ago. I hope so much, that they will release the other seasons (2-6)on DVD also.
The Show is so rar on TV, it's almost 11 years ago since I saw the series on screen...I would love to see the other episodes again!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Great Show Deserves Better DVD Treatment.......2007-06-12

St. Elsewhere was a great show in its heyday. It's still a fine show though it's a bit dated in spots. Strong writing, thoughtful acting, inventive direction and camera-work (for the time). Terrific fun to sit and watch early performances of actors who went on to do more great work (the late Robert Pastorelli, for one) and those who probably should have had better careers than they've had (Lance Guest, for example).

What gives this DVD set a 4-star rating instead of a 5-star rating is the sad extras. On the plus side, St. Elsewhere has closed captioning. On the negative, there is only one episode with commentary, "Cora and Arnie." And nearly all the other extras deal with this same episode or the arc of stories in which it's included! It was a great episode and Doris Roberts (who does commentary with Mark Tinker) and the late James Coco were very credible in the title roles. In fact, they both won well-deserved Emmys. But there's a lot more to the season than this one episode (#4) and its three or four episode arc.

It'd be great to have commentary with William Daniels, Howie Mandel, Ed Begley, Jr., Bonnie Bartlett, etc. There's one very slight "Cora and Arnie" documentary which includes some comments from David Morse, but, again, it'd be great to get some talk from a variety of people on a variety of episodes.

I don't mind the double-sided DVD's all that much, and I don't need fancy packaging. I just want meatier extras, spread out over the entire season. More behind-the-scenes. The best DVD episode commentaries are those involving two or more of the cast members. Take a look at NCIS, for example. Maybe by the time the second and later seasons of St. Elsewhere roll out, they will have beefed up the extras and gotten together a few cast members to sit together and watch 4 or 5 episodes per season.

By the way, the character who dies of AIDS, Bobby Caldwell, was played by Mark Harmon NOT Mark Hamill as one reviewer stated. Just trying to clear things up.

5 out of 5 stars fun to see it again.......2007-04-20

My husband and I have been buying DVDs of the older television shows that we have enjoyed. This is a well-written, well-acted drama that is sometimes a bit kooky. It's fun to watch without commercials.

5 out of 5 stars St. Elsewhere - Season 1.......2007-04-11

I loved this show and have been waiting for it to come out on something so I could watch the episodes again...I can't wait for season two to come out. If you were a fan of this show, you have to get it...

5 out of 5 stars Fun to Watch.......2007-03-13

We enjoyed watching this exceptional video set. You will really care about these medical soap characters and be touched in many ways includung a few chuckles along the way...very entertaining indeed.

Young Libby Parsons (Ashley Judd) is happy as a clam, and why not? She's got a loving, successful husband (Bruce Greenwood), an adorable son, and an island home to die for. One morning, after a romantic sailing expedition with her husband, Libby finds herself covered in blood. Her husband's missing, the boat resembles a murder scene, and there's a knife on the deck. One might stop right there and call for help; Libby, however, takes matters--or, more specifically, the knife--into her own hands, and the moment she does, there's the Coast Guard. Faster than you can say frame-up, Libby's been charged with murder and jailed, with her young son stripped from her custody. It's all cut-and-dried, except for one thing: Libby's husband isn't dead, and she's about to track him down. And thanks to the Fifth Amendment's double jeopardy rule, she can't be charged twice for his murder.

<I>Double Jeopardy</I> has a singularly seductive revenge premise and, in Judd, one of the most seductive leading ladies to grace the silver screen in recent years. So then why does this thriller feel like it came from the bottom of the Lifetime television movie barrel? Instead of taking a gritty, hard-boiled approach, the film plays up all of Libby's mushy emotions--tellingly, the director here is Bruce Beresford, whose best film, <I>Driving Miss Daisy</I>, is as far from thriller territory as you can get. No matter how stoically or deviously Judd plays her, Libby comes across as a soccer mom with a slight taste for blood. Only in a few scenes, specifically when she tracks her wily husband to his new identity in New Orleans, does Judd get to strut her stuff, stealing an evening gown and crashing his charity auction. Most of the time, though, this thriller offers only a smattering of suspense. Well, at least like Libby, the filmmakers can't be condemned twice for the same crime. With Tommy Lee Jones duplicating his <I>Fugitive</I> role, as Libby's conscientious parole officer. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

4 out of 5 stars A Grain of Salt Review.......2007-05-22

If Ashley Judd is in the movie, I AM GOING to see it. Period. It could be a four-hour documentary on elephant bathing and I'm going to watch it if Ashley Judd makes an appearance. I say that only so that people considering my review can better understand where I'm coming from in my admittedly biased review of this movie.

HOWEVER....

I did truly love the plot of this movie. It could have starred Grover from Sesame Street and Jeff Phat from the Wiggles and I would have enjoyed it pretty much the same. (well okay maybe not, but still... the actors merely ADDED to a plot that was truly amazing.)

The plot can be summed up best with one of Ashley's more famous lines. "I can shoot you in the middle of Mardi Gras and they can't touch me..."

She'd already been convicted of a murder that had never even taken place. The guy faked his own death! And in the end, he learns a very valuable lesson... Karma is a witch... and so is Ashley Judd Scorned!

5 out of 5 stars It's a fun, vicarious thrill ride, not an art film.......2007-05-21

Critics can trot out all the evidence they like: Gaping plot holes, legal inaccuracies, cliched improbabilities, etc. It doesn't matter. 'Double Jeopardy' was a surprise box-office hit in 1999 because it was exciting, had two immensely likable powerhouse leads, and one intensely despicable villain. Ashley Judd's passionate unstoppability in pursuit of Bruce Greenwood's bottomless evil kept viewers riveted till the last frame. They couldn't wait to see him get his payback. And that coffin scene was extremely intense in a darkened theater. It was the talk of the season!

Don't rent this. Buy it. You'll thank me later.

This is third time I have watched this movie, I absolutely like the premise. LEE

4 out of 5 stars One for the library.......2007-04-12

Two awesome stars, Tommy Lee Jones and Ashley Judd. This was a really good movie and one that is in my library.

4 out of 5 stars Murder isn't always a crime.......2007-01-06

I love any movie with Tommy Lee Jones in it, as I believe he ia fine actor. Ashley Judd is also superb in this film and although it has many plot holes, it is still a very entertaining movie, best watched I believe without knowing anything about it as has too many plot twists that can be accidently revealed. Watch it if you really like action thrillers.

Despite a likable cast of humans, it's the canine stars who steal the show in Eight Below, a terrific live-action adventure in the time-honored Disney tradition. Based on a true story that was previously filmed (much differently) as the 1983 Japanese hit Antarctica, this above-average family film takes place in 1993 and focuses on a dog-sled guide at an Antarctic research station (Paul Walker) who is forced by a severe storm to abandon eight beloved sled dogs for the duration of a harsh Antarctic winter. Left to fend for themselves, the rugged and resourceful dogs encounter danger at every turn, surviving for nearly six months while Walker and his closest colleagues (engagingly played by Bruce Greenwood, Moon Bloodgood, and American Pie's Jason Biggs) join forces to mount a daring rescue mission. Having endured similarly extreme conditions on his 1993 film Alive, director Frank Marshall brings an abundance of natural splendor (and minimum use of digital wizardry) to spectacularly arctic locations in Norway, Greenland and Canada, and Walker (star of The Fast and the Furious) lends an amiable sincerity to his compassionate role. For most viewers, however, it's the remarkable dogs (six Siberian huskies and two malamutes) who make Eight Below so thoroughly entertaining. It's not quite an instant family classic, but it comes pretty doggone close. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Walt Disney Pictures presents EIGHT BELOW, the thrilling tale of incredible friendship between eight amazing sled dogs and their guide Jerry (Paul Walker). Stranded in Antarctica during the most unforgiving winter on the planet, Jerry's beloved sled dogs must learn to survive together until Jerry — who will stop at nothing -- rescues them. Driven by unwavering bonds of friendship, enormous belief in one another, and tremendous courage, Jerry and the dogs make an incredible journey to reunite in this triumphant and inspiring action-adventure the whole family will treasure.

5 out of 5 stars A keeper!.......2007-05-30

This Disney movie is a great movie to watch with your entire family. It is about a guy with 8 great dogs (Huskies) and his attempt to get back to rescue them after being left alone when several people had to be transported out of a snow storm. The story not only shows you this guy's struggle to get to his dogs but also shows the bravery and intellegence of these dogs. If you love animals, not only dogs, you will love this movie. I saw it last night with a friend and we both jumped up at the same time (couldn't sit still) and cried after various incidents. I saw it on On Demand HBO but I am going to purchase it so I can see it anytime I want to see a great movie.

FOR THOSE OF YOU READING REVIEWS BEFORE YOU SEE THE MOVIE, BE CAREFUL AS A FEW OF THE REVIEWERS BEFORE ME GAVE AWAY VERY IMPORTANT PARTS OF THE STORY THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE BEEN TOLD AS IT WILL SPOIL THE ENDING FOR YOU.

WARNING: THIS REVIEW CONTAINS MAJOR SPOILERS

TITLE: Eight Below

RELEASE DATE: 2006

PLOT: Inspired by a true story: during a horrific snow storm in Antarctica, Jerry Shepard is forced to leave his eight snow dogs behind due to no room for the trip back home. So now Shepard does all he can to rescue the worthy canines who try to survive in the southern most part of the Earth. 10/10

CHARACTERS/PERFORMANCES: Paul Walker as "Shepard" and Bruce Greenwood as "McClaren" are outstanding, while Jason Biggs as "Cooper" can be a bit of an irritant sometimes as the comedic sidekick. Having two of the dogs die wasn't really that heartbreaking to me, but maybe it was because of the way it was filmed. 8/10

THE SCRIPT/DIALOGUE: Dialogue is never over-exaggerated, but a few parts are still sappy. 8/10

DIRECTOR: Frank Marshall did a splendid job with avoiding any over-the-top mumbo jumbo. However, his handling of conflicts on screen and crafts of character development needed some work. Not to say that it was all ridiculous, but that some scenes involving suspense between characters and other characters, or characters and Mother Nature, weren't very strong. The dog trainers for this film were excellent in showing and telling the dogs what to do. 8/10

PACING: The film drags during the second half, when Shepard is away from Antarctica. The canines' journey makes up for it, though. 9/10

CINEMATOGRAPHY: The scenes that were shot on location are particularly beautiful. All the snow and ice and frozen water make me want to visit Antarctica (even though the film was shot in Greenland, Norway, and Canada instead of in Antarctica). 10/10

SETS AND COSTUMES: Good; nothing special but still good. 10/10

MUSIC: Much of the music sounded too melodramatic. I didn't like it that much. 5/10

VISUAL EFFECTS: The leopard seal swimming underwater is probably the only computer-generated creature that looks very unrealistic. Otherwise, all the other computer-generated shots and figures are spectacular. 9/10

DVD SPECIAL FEATURES: The deleted scenes are wonderful to look at, and the Making-of documentary is not good but not enough to grab the viewer's attention. 8/10

CONCLUSION: "Eight Below" is very entertaining for people of all ages. Just don't judge it by its irritating comedy or slow progress toward the climax and resolution.

Back when he wasn't relegated to the lesser cable channels, soft-porn meister Zalman King uncorked this howler of a drama on moviegoers, who were initially titillated by the ratings battle, but then shrugged and went off in search of the next cheap sensation. Model and subsequent Mickey Rourke squeeze Carré Otis plays a brilliant young attorney--well, we're told she's brilliant, although watching her in action, straining to wrap those puffy lips around her legalese dialogue, definitely conjures up other adjectives. She's dispatched to Rio de Janeiro under the guise of real-estate law and ends up seduced both by the exotic culture and by a brooding, highly misunderstood and frighteningly orange-skinned multimillionaire (Rourke). Kinky (for the time) sex games and deliriously mannered dialogue make this a rather pretentious exercise, unleavened by any truly erotic sensuality. Fun for taunting purposes, though. <I>--David Kronke</I>

Description

Set in the sultry splendor of Rio de Janeiro, Wild Orchid stars Mickey Rourke (9 1/2 Weeks), Jacqueline Bisset ("Joan of Arc") and supermodel CarrÃ(c) Otis in a "torrid" (Variety) adventure of the senses. Filled with "exotic settings" (The Hollywood Reporter), it is a hypnotic odyssey that will leave you breathless and spellbound. Beautiful young attorney Emily Reed (Otis) travels to Rio to work with international negotiator Claudia Lirones (Bisset) on a multimillion-dollar deal. But once exposed to the raw sensuality of her surroundings, Emily is increasingly drawn into a world of erotic fantasy. Eager to guide Emily through this underworld is Claudia's old flame Wheeler (Rourke). Mysterious and seductive, Wheeler unleashes Emily's most primitive desiresÂ...even as she threatens to unlock his world-weary heart.

OK....I had a 2 night stand with Bob who at the time lived on Balboa Blvd around 32nd Sreet. It was "Wild Orchid" walk after the "Canery". Without seeing the movie it blew my mind. Bob was the best and I hate myself for not responding to the guy. He called and I hung up on him several times:)

Perfect Match...Just didn't know it at the time.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly sexy!.......2007-01-12

So, it's a little dated but this movie is still HOT! It's twisted tale of lust as a kinky rich guy (Rourke) gets a shy, sexually inhibited young lawyer (Carrie Otis) to drop her inhibitions and do things 'good' girls don't do. Otis's character is HOT and one wonders how Wheeler (Rourke) can resist her charms as he plays an emotionally unavailable guy with some serious intamacy issues. He watches in the background as he persuades her to do nasty things with another guy and lives 'through' her as she enjoys herself. Emily seems frightened of her own desires at first as she sees the sexy people of Rio being free and letting loose and having a good time and she ultimately is unable to resist her urges. Meanwhile, Jaquiline Bisset's character is and older lady obsessed with Wheeler, who is trying to throw the young and gorgeous Carrie Otis at him to see if he can resist. I didn't find this movie insulting to women or perverted, it's just a sexy film about people who enjoy sex and there is nothing wrong with this. Anyone who is seriously offended by this is probably not very comfortable with sexuality on screen in general. It's really a pretty tame movie by today's standards, though I DO beleive the Rourke/Otis love scene was not faked. Overall, I found this a sexy movie I would watch it again. The plot is not great but the visuals are awesome, the bodies are HOT and all natural (before this dreadful 'breast implant' craze took over and made all women in nude scenes look like they have grapefruits in them!) and the chemestry between the characters is awesome! This might be a good date movie but be sure of the other person's taste before watching it, some people might consider it smutty or too nasty!

1 out of 5 stars Wild Orchaid.......2006-11-05

This movie was NOT good at all. Other than it has beautiful people with real nice bodies, everything else is a waste of money and time!

4 out of 5 stars Theatrical Soft Core Porn.......2006-06-20

In the late 80's to early 90's, Mickey Rourke may as well have been a porn star. Hell, every movie Rourke was in he was playing the same character who got a different hot chick...They were big-screen soft core porn films. Problem is, Mickey Rourke is so good at playing these characters that the movies he's done aren't that bad. Here, Rourke plays Wheeler...Who won't really enter into the synopsis for a moment. Rourke's ex-wife Carre Otis plays Emily, a young International lawyer who recieves a job with a big firm in New York and is hastily sent to Rio De Janeiro. In Rio, with her boss Claudia (Jaqueline Bisset) away; Emily begins to come into contact with sex almost everywhere she goes. Then, she meets Wheeler. Wheeler is that odd, soft-spoken, rich, womanizer guy every guy wishes they could be. Wheeler is the guy who says stuff to women in movies that we would never be able to get away with, but onscreen it just looks so damned easy. Anyway, unlike "9 1/2 Weeks", Wheeler and Emily don't just begin having sex. In fact, the big sex payoff isn't until the final minutes of the movie. And let's face it, if you rent this movie...You're not renting it for the story. Truth is, the story's not even that intriguing or event good for that matter. The whole movie has a plot like a soft-core porn movie. Thing is, Otis and Rourke have enough charisma on screen to pull of a movie like this. So, even if you ignore the sex, the movie isn't that bad. I, personally, think it's better than 9 1/2 Weeks. Fact is, even if you don't give a damn about the story. Carre Otis is f**king hot, so check it out.

Description

5 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-05-15

It was great movie if you like dogs. It shows the nature of dogs and how they are with each other, and the link that humans have with their dogs.

5 out of 5 stars Eight Below.......2007-05-10

What a way to earn a living. Dogs are so important to the existence of the Anartica.........

5 out of 5 stars Need a good cry?.......2007-05-08

If you cry every time you watch "Ol Yeller" then you'll enjoy this movie. It gets a little slow in the middle but the dogs are amazing. Well worth the time.

Academy Award-nominee Sylvester Stallone stars as war hero, ex-Green Beret John Rambo in the one that started it all! FIRST BLOOD is an explosive action-thriller that will keep you on the edge of your seat until the final, powerful frame.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great movie.......2007-05-15

Great movie, Stallone's best movie next to Rocky. The only thing that was kinda disapointing is the video quality of this Blu-ray version.

First Blood looks only slightly beter on Blu-ray than DVD. So close that I even Beleive most average joes and not enthusiasts like me would not be able to tell the diffrence.

There are not many extras either. However this is the trend for up and comming media formats. However if you were to watch new release movies on Blu-ray instead of a re-release. The HD quality will blow your mind.

Unfortunately First Blood is a Re-Release.

4 out of 5 stars They Drew First Blood , Not Me!!!.......2007-05-07

With the amount of different versions of the Rambo movies on DVD, you really get the best of both worlds with this one. For years, the very good David Morrel commentary was the highlight until a Sly Stallone version came out... both commentaries are excellent. The transfer is good for a movie that was shot back in 1982, the sound is pretty good. With the amount of "bubble gum' movies out there, this one is reasonibly priced, great replay value and one of the best Sly movies to boot!!!!

5 out of 5 stars First Blood (Blu-ray).......2007-03-29

Fantastic remastering, superb picture, unbelievable sound, probably about as good as it gets, and for such an old title to have been reproduced with clarity that almost defies belief, I can strongly recommend this title to anyone who has doubts about the reproduction. Just make sure that you have a high definition panel and only the very best in HDMI gold plated leads to get the best out of any Blu-ray title.

4 out of 5 stars First Blood is Back.......2007-02-15

I was very impressed with this Blu Ray Transfer, for a 25year old film Lionsgate have actually done a pretty good job, this is miles better then what they did with Total Recall! The Picture and Sound are a marked improvement over the DVD, there are only a few frames that I could see where it isnt prisitine but dont let this deter you, buy this if you love Rambo he's never looked better!

4 out of 5 stars Looks and sounds great!.......2007-02-07

The Blu-ray version of this looks amazing. I bought the "ultimate edition of the standard DVD a few years ago and this looks notably better - even compared to the former's image being upscaled. This is is the type of picture I expect out of Blu-ray. Not being a Hi-def rocket scientist, I can't speak too much for the sound quality other than it sounds great. I don't have the euipment to process DTS-HD, so I can only assume that it sounds better than what normal DTS provides. The extras on the disc are the same as on the ultimate edition DVD, so you're not losing out on anything like in some of the other Blu-ray ports. My only complaint is this: Lionsgate has got this thing for having the pop-up menu take up most of the screen. Given that the other studios have gone with a nice, low-profile menu that only appears at the bottom, I hope that Lionsgate will adopt this practice sometime in the near future. Other than that, if you're a fan of 'First Blood' I can easily reccomend this disc.
