No film better utilizes Audrey Hepburn's flighty charm and svelte beauty than this romantic adaptation of Truman Capote's novella. Hepburn's urban sophisticate Holly Golightly, an enchanting neurotic living off the gifts of gentlemen, is a bewitching figure in designer dresses and costume jewelry. George Peppard is her upstairs neighbor, a struggling writer and "kept" man financed by a steely older woman (Patricia Neal). His growing friendship with the lonely Holly soon turns to love and threatens the delicate balance of both of their compromised lives. Taking liberties with Capote's bittersweet story, director Blake Edwards and screenwriter George Axelrod turn New York into a city of lovers and create a poignant portrait of Holly, a frustrated romantic with a secret past and a hidden vulnerability. Composer Henry Mancini earned Oscars for the hit song "Moon River" and his tastefully romantic score. The only sour note in the whole film is Mickey Rooney's demeaning performance as the apartment's Japanese manager, an offensively overdone stereotype even in 1961. The rest of the film has weathered the decades well. Edwards's elegant yet light touch, Axelrod's generous screenplay, and Hepburn's mix of knowing experience and naiveté combine to create one of the great screen romances and a refined slice of high society bohemian chic. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>
Product Description
Winner of two Oscars®, the romantic comedy that sparkles like diamonds! From the opening strains of Henry Mancini and Johnny Mercer's haunting, Oscar®-winning song "Moon River," you'll once again be under the alluring spell of that madcap, carefree New York playgirl known as Holly Golightly (Audrey Hepburn) in this 24-carat romantic comedy based of Truman Capote's best-selling novella. George Peppard is the struggling and "sponsored" young writer who finds himself swept into Holly's dizzying, delightfully unstructured lifestyle as she determinedly scours Manhattan for a suitable millionaire to marry. The sparkling special features on this Anniversary Edition DVD only add to the luster of director Blake Edwards' timeless film classic. Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen, Martin Balsam and Mickey Rooney co-star; Mancini won an additional Academy Award® for his enthralling musical score.
Customer Reviews:
Why is this movie considered a classic?.......2007-06-24
THIS MOVIE IS THE BEST!!! at being terrible!
This movie is, frankly, one of the most uninteresting, and utterly boring movies I have ever seen. Seriously, this movie makes reruns of c-span seem as exciting as "Raiders of the Lost Ark". This movie does not even begin to have what could be loosely described as a plot. Instead it focuses on the uninteresting life of a woman who calls herself "Holly". It focuses on various occurrences in her life, primarily on her love interests (which are contingent entirely on money). However the man that falls in love with her seems not to care, lending to one extremely stupid seeming character. When Hepburn throws her cat out of a cab into the rain, it left me wondering why he didn't do the same to Hepburn. Her character is so unlikeable it's nearly impossible to describe. At one point she states "lets each do something we haven't done before", then states "but I couldn't think of anything I haven't done before". At this point, I couldn't contain myself anymore. I yelled at the screen "How about something interesting to watch! Neither of you have done that before!"
All in all, the lack of a plot, unlikeable characters, and mediocre scripting lead to an outright dull and uninteresting movie. There should be a warning on the box that says "hide all sharp objects before attempting to view this movie" because chances are, you will be stabbing yourself in the eyes before you've finished this one. Whoever decided this movie was a classic should be shot!
A true classic film........2007-05-26
This is one of Audrey Hepburn's finest films. It is based on the novel by Truman Capote set in early 1960's New York City. Hepburn plays Holly Golitely, a stylish New York socialite with a hidden past (which couldn't be more different than her life today). Her character is quirky, vulnerable, sweet, and lonely, while at the same time is selfish, naive, and strong. She considers herself to be "a wild thing" that can never be tamed. She detachedly "dates" several older men who give her money which is how she makes her living. While in search of a glamorous life and a wealthy husband, she is at the same time is afraid of true love. She won't commit to anything, even naming her cat.
Whenever she is very upset, she dresses up in her finest, most glamorous dresses and jumps in a cab to the famous Tiffany's jewelry store. As she dreams of owning the diamonds someday, she thinks "nothing bad could ever happen to you here."
Along comes Paul Varjak, played by George Peppard, who is a writer and a kept man that moves into an apartment in Holly's building. He lives off the money that he receives from his older, married lover. He develops a friendship with Holly that turns to love. He understands Holly's vulnerablity and wants to help her, but he has a difficult time trying to love this "wild thing".
Though the film is over forty years old and looks dated now, it still stands the test of time. The scene where Audrey Hepburn sits in a window singing "Moon River" is a truly magical moment of film history. It is a great romantic movie and the ending will bring a tear to your eye.
classic movie.......2007-05-19
What's not to love about this movie. It's a true classic and timeless. Loved it. Great for "date night" or dressing up with the girls and watching.
A Classic Worth Adding to One's Collection.......2007-05-14
Taken for what it is, it's a fun movie. One can simply enjoy the story, the music, and the relief at the recovery of "Cat". The closing scene is always touching to the romantic at heart. It is a vastly superior way to spend one's evening compared to watching the news or the various crime dramas that seem to dominate TV nowadays.
SIMPLY a Classic - Always!.......2007-05-11
First of all, "Breakfast at Tiffany's" is a fine classic and one of Audrey Hepburn's best. The assemble cast is exceptional. I love this classics and yes, old Hollywood made many mistakes in portraying people of color back then. I do agree that Mickey Rooney's portrayal is over the top, but I don't see it as an insult. I see it as a silly parody portrayed by one of America's most beloved classic actors and not meant to hurt anyone's feelings. IT WAS OLD HOLLYWOOD back then so forgive them. Being a woman of mixed extraction, I could understand why Asian Americans would find the role insulting, but I could see that perhaps they are being overly sensitive. I think Hollywood has learned from their mistakes being that they have also portrayed many other nationalities in such bad light. Let's just dismiss this silly parody and actor miscast from over 40 years ago and enjoy the rest of the movie.
Audrey performance is lovable, charming, endearing and just funny. George Peppard is wonderful as the straight-laced author who falls in love with her. The party scene is a classic and nobody could have ever planned it the way it turned out. FUNNY! I absolutely love it. I recommend this classic to everyone but for those who are too stringent on past Hollywood, let it go. It's a small parody done long ago by old Hollywood. Regardless, it's one of the classic movies I highly recommend.

Davy Crockett 2 Movie set.......2007-05-09
Brought back the good ol' days. Great family entertainment and a peek of American folklore.
Davy Crockett - Two Movie Set.......2007-03-09
This item was purchased as a gift. He grew up watching Davy Crockett as a boy and sang along with the movies. He really enjoyed them, and I am sure he will watch them time and time again.
Watch over and over.......2007-01-12
I grew up watching, my kids grew up watching and now a grand child is watching!
Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier.......2007-01-04
This movie came out when my sons were small. We went to see it in Cincinnati. After the movie, Fess Parker and Buddy Ebson were in person greeting the youngsters.
I purchased it for my son this Christmas for him to watch with his grandson. They watched it twice (both DVD's) the day after Christmas. Joe is still "hooked" on the movie after all these years and now his grandson, Cody, as well.
I copied all the verses of the song off the internet for "them."
Davy Crockett.......2006-11-13
This product arrived when they said it would and it is an excellent purchase. Lots of old memories.

"All I know is, the Democrats elected a president, and the Republicans cheated 'em out of it!" No, this is not a Michael Moore documentary, but a 1968 Disney musical. <I>The One and Only, Genuine, Original Family Band</I> is probably the best musical comedy set against the 1888 presidential campaign between Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison. The family band, a bit like American prairie Von Trapps, settles in the Dakota territory. Problem is, Grandpappy Walter Brennan is a diehard Democrat, and Dakota is rife with Republicans, including the suitor (John Davidson at his dimpledest) to his granddaughter (Lesley Ann Warren). The score by the Sherman brothers is not their best, and the "family fare" approach almost killed Disney films during this era. Nice to see old hoofer Buddy Ebsen get to dance a bit, and trivia buffs should note that Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn are first linked here--he's one of the kids, she's a featured dancer. <I>--Robert Horton</I>
Description
There's magic in the memories as great Disney moments are captured right here for you and your family to enjoy in THE ONE AND ONLY, GENUINE, ORIGINAL FAMILY BAND -- a large slice of Americana set to music and dance. This is the captivating saga of a musical family that homesteads in the Dakota Territory of the 1880s and becomes embroiled in the presidential battle between Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison. A robust, song-filled movie for those who enjoy a good love story, admire a family that sticks together through thick and thin, or respond to rousing, Broadway-style music ... composed by the Academy Award(R) winning Sherman Brothers (1964 Best Score, Best Original Song, MARY POPPINS).
Customer Reviews:
If You Like Songs About Politics........2007-04-06
This 1968 film was doomed to failure before they started, when someone decided to write songs about politics in a movie about politics. It is like a song about a dead camel; does not matter how talented the song writers are; how interesting is song about a dead camel going to be? The political song is catchy "Were going over with Grover", but politics in our time is depressing, and we would like another topic. The successful song in "Mary Poppins" of the secret suffragettes (women's Right to vote) was different, a song saying humor not politics, by exceptional character actresses. It appears the producer has broken "Mary Poppins" into a formula to apply here, and like applying a formula to religion, a formula does not give personality, spirit, and soul. "Mary Poppins" was not made with a formula, and was a great film.
Of some interest to see Walter Brennan, Buddy Ebsen; and some children who go on to other movies and television. Butch Patrick is charming as the boy politely questioning the substitute teacher's credentials (the best scene). Too bad he was type-cast as Eddie Munster, as he shows charming talent at a young age.
It is a shame Disney stopped doing musicals. It was not the song-writers.
Better Disney type musicals are: "Chitty Chitty Bang Bang" and "Summer Magic".
Simply Divine!.......2007-03-30
I remember seeing "Family Band" when it first came out on the big screen in the 1960's and was enchanted with it then. I am still enjoying it today on DVD. Everything about it is so beautiful. The digital remastering, the bright, crisp images, the gorgeous music, etc. So many talented actors are in this film, and the score is chock full of tunes that will stay in your head for a long time. The music is so fine. Like "Mary Poppins," the Sherman brothers worked their magic again to produce tunes that will keep you singing for days. The dancing is so good, too. And then there's the story! You'll get an American history lesson on top of everything else. You can amaze your friends with your knowledge of the Grover Cleveland/Benjamin Harrison presidential campaign of the late 1880's! This is truly a family movie, one that will surely please the little ones as well as the adults. And any musicians and singers in your viewing audience will love and appreciate the talent and hard work that went into making this musical. I just cannot say enough about this fine movie. I thoroughly enjoyed it. They just don't make 'em like this anymore, sadly.
No story line.......2007-03-23
This movie did not have much of a plot. I know it was made to be a musical, but most musicals have more of a plot than this one. I enjoyed watching Walter Brennan and Buddy Ebsen, two classic actors.
Not the best Disney movie ever made but...........2007-03-10
I'm a big fan of Disney movies, and sappy-ness doesn't bother me, but this was off the scales corny. Not much story, too much dancing around. Kind of chilidish for grownups and hard for kids to understand some of it, as it's mostly about politics, so it kind of gets lost in the middle. Buddy Ebsen, though, gives his usual stellar performance, and Kurt Russel and Goldie Hawn appear in the movie together and met on the set for the 1st time!
The One and Only , Genuine , Original Family Band.......2006-10-31
Get this while Disney still has it in print! So much fun! First movie with Golde Hawne and Ken Russell together! Leslie Anne Warren and John Davidson's second! Skip over the narrative ... just watch the movie! It speaks for itself.

Description
Jim Varney, Cloris Leachman, Lily Tomlin and Dabney Coleman star in the riotous rags-to-riches story of America's favorite backwoods billionaires. It features hilarious cameos by Dolly Parton, Buddy Ebsen and Zsa Zsa Gabor. Instant oil baron Jed Clampett moves Granny and his kin from the Ozark hills to Beverly Hills. Though unsophisticated, the Clampetts are decent, hard-working, trusting people- in other words, perfect marks for the swindlers, social climbers and gold diggers who can't wait to welcome them! Even their Fawning bankers, Miss Hathaway and Mr. Drysdale, may not be able to keep the Clampett cash from disappearing into the Hills!
Customer Reviews:
LUUUUUUUUUUUVED IT!.......2007-02-28
I disagree w/ other commenters that this movie had "dirty parts". OK, it wasn't Pollyanna; there were a few PG13 moments, but nothing to make you send the kids outta the room. They had to add a LITTLE spice, GEEZ!! It was made in 1993-far past the age of innocence! Anyhoo, the characters-
JIM VARNEY as JED-SHOCKINGLY WELL DONE, and VERY ENDEARING! I really wish he hadn't died, there's no telling what else he could have done.
CLORIS LEACHMAN as GRANNY-OH MY LORD, how is it possible to put into words WHAT A GREAT JOB SHE DID! The word HILARIOUS just doesn't cut it! Dare I say, SHE WAS A BETTER GRANNY THAT THE ORIGINAL, IRENE RYAN? THERE, I SAID IT! Whew, what a relief! I mean it too!
DEIDRICH BADER as JETHRO-VERY FUNNY! DIFFERENT than Max Baer, for sure, but still VERY FUNNY! Those big horse teeth really added to the redneck effect. I really loved the part when he & his mom Pearl were flying down the road, and she asked him didn't he order the new brakes yet, and he said "sure I did Maw, they're coming in next week"! He was funny as Jethrine too, although maybe just a little too pretty (?)
ERICA ELENIAK as ELLIE MAE-did a good job, pretty true to the character, although I couldn't get over how bushy her eyebrows were, but I guess that added to the hillbilly effect. She is a VERY pretty lady.
LILLY TOMLIN as MISS JANE-NAILED IT, NAILED IT, NAILED IT!!!!!!!!!!!
the same for DABNEY COLEMAN as MR. DRYSDALE, and whomever that was as MRS. DRYSDALE, and also the lady who played COUSIN PEARL. The rest of the cast-well, not very important.
HILARIOUS COMEDY!!!!!!!.......2006-05-19
What can I say??? "The Beverly Hillbillies" is the funniest
movie ever! I'm not talking "KANGAROO JACK" funny, or "Ernest
rides again" funny, NO! I'm talking 11 OSCAR winning funny!
And the cast was perfect! Jim Varney as Jed, Deidrich Bader as
Jethro, Erika Eleniak as Elly May, Cloris Leachman as Granny,
and Lily Tomlin was an extra treat as miss Hathaway!
But, there was something different about it. Instead of the
family freindly jokes, they relied on ADULT humor! Can you
believe they said the word "SEX" in the beverly hillbillies
of all things!??!?!?!?!?
So I would not recommend it to anyone who liked the TV series
as a kid. This is a DIRTY, VULGAR movie and I cringed when I
watched this!
Still it's a reeeeeeaaaaaaly funny movie!
Just one word describes this movie: AWFUL!!!!.......2006-04-23
don't waste your time watching this HORRIBLE, AWFUL movie!!! The acting, the dialouge, the direction, the casting...all HORRIBLE!!! This, along with "The Honeymooners" "The Dukes of Hazzard" and countless other movies that are based on TV shows, should be held up as prime examples as to why certain shows should never get the big-screen treatment. However, there is one bright spot: Lily Tomlin as Jane Hathaway, she captures the character perfectly, the way Nancy Kulp did in the classic TV show. But, the all-time worst performance is,without a doubt, Diedrich Bader (Oswald from "The Drew Carey show") as Jethro.
Don't waste money on this movie!!! Instead buy the DVDs from MPI. I'm just glad I didn't buy this, and instead rented it.
I loved this movie. Funny,but dirty........2006-02-27
My name is Andy. I'm a huuuuuuuuuge fan of the classic tv series, "the beverly hillbillies". and I was surprised to see
this film on the 5 dollar rack in wal-mart. needless to say,
when I saw the DVD in my reach i was ecstatic! I begged my parents to buy it and they did! Jim Varney is my favorite actor. it was hilairious! on the scale of 1 to 5,this was shooting a 7!!! but there was one problem...it had WAAAAAAAAY
too much sexual humor. mainly between the bad guys. I counted 12 dirty things throughout the whole movie! One part was when the clampetts were on the freeway. Some guy drives up in a jeep and yells,"Nice wheels!"and gives them the finger. so, Jed says,"Jethro, what's that man a-pointin' at?" "I reckon that's
how you wave hi to folks in beverly hills." See what I mean?
also, I discovered that on the box it said "rated PG".For what???????? It didn't say! Heck, i'm only 12!!! Movie people think some bits of dirty stuff would just fly over kids heads!! I would recommend this to anyone who wants to see a funny movie. But I would not recommend it to anyone who don't want to let their children see a dirty film. don't see this if you're one of those people.
By the way, thanks for putting this child's form here amazon. now this is my first comment i've ever written online! Keep going amazon!
Not the Beverly Hillbillies!.......2006-01-10
Captures none of the folksy comedy of the original series instead relying on bathroom humor. Don't waste your money or time. Spend your money on the TV series instead. Only thing worth mentioning is Lily Tomlin as Jane Hathaway who almost captures to a T the characterization of the original Nancy Culp. Otherwise, this one's a turkey and Jed would be a-shootin it!

Available uncut for the first time, the five episodes of <I>Davy Crockett</I> that aired on Walt Disney's "Disneyland" show (1954-55) launched one of the great pop culture crazes of the '50s. An estimated $300 million worth of Crockett merchandise was sold during the first eight months of the craze, including 10 million "coonskin" caps. Disney didn't spend a lot on the original episodes, but as host Leonard Maltin observes, the colorful location and matte shots distinguished <I>Davy Crockett</I> from the cheesy-looking westerns of the 1950s. The three original episodes were later recut into the theatrical feature <I>Davy Crockett, King of the Wild Frontier</I> (1955); the more comic adventures from the second season that introduced the flamboyant riverman Mike Fink (Jeffrey York) became <I>Davy Crockett and the River Pirates</I> (1956). Tall and ruggedly handsome, if somewhat limited as an actor, Fess Parker was effective as the laconic frontiersman. The more experienced Buddy Ebsen (playing sidekick Georgie Russel) carried many of their scenes. Fifty years later, <I>Davy Crockett</I> remains an engaging example of national myth making. Younger viewers may be surprised to find this straightforward hero retains much of his appeal in an uncertain time. <I>--Charles Solomon</I>

Confused.......2007-01-14
Maybe I'm wrong, but didn't the original movie start out earlier than with the Indian episode? I thought it actually showed him "grinnin'" down a "bar" before leaving his beloved Polly and family.
Can someone straighten me out? And for some reason, I want to hear "Green Grow the Lilacs" some where in the show.
Great show, Bad DVD .......2006-11-13
I loved the Davy Crockett Televised Series as a kid but these left a bit to be desired. The picture sometimes goes to a sepia tone and other times it loses its color contrast. It also get super fast in some places. It looks like it was hodgepodge together from different lesser quality sources. Also on parts do not play well. The story is great and so is the packaging but the quality of the DVD leaves something to be desired. However if a full original copy has been lost to time this is better then nothing.
King of the Wild Frontier.......2006-07-03
Walt Disney made five television shows about Davy Crockett with Fess Parker in the title role and Buddy Ebsen as his sidekick George Russel. You can now own all five of these television shows in two versions. This version presents all five television shows as they were first presented on ABC in the mid-1950s. There is also a two-movie version that combines these five television shows into two movies. I personally prefer the Disney Treasures version. This version also includes additional material that may be interesting to a fan of the series. The gem of the additional material is the interview with Fess Parker.
The television shows in this set are diverse in style. The first three television episodes are "Davy Crockett - Indian Fighter," "Davy Crockett Goes to Congress," and "Davy Crockett at the Alamo." These television shows have some basis in historical fact, though many of the things portrayed in these shows are wrong. For example, Davy left the rifle he called "Betsy" back in Tennessee when he went to Texas.
What is amazing about these television shows is the response of Americans. Suddenly children everywhere were sporting coonskin caps and carrying replicas of muzzle-loading rifles. It became unfashionable to be a Native American, and very fashionable to say "bar" instead of bear.
Though Davy did not survive the events at the Alamo, Davy's popularity was such that Walt Disney brought Davy back in two additional television adventures, "Davy Crockett and the Keelboat Race" and "Davy Crockett and the River Pirates." According to Walt Disney, this second set of adventures was based on stories created about Davy Crockett, who had become a legend in his own time. The stories were more humorous than the first three, and showed an even larger-than-life version of Davy Crockett than the first three adventures.
What is most remarkable about these television shows is how well they hold up. The story of Davy Crockett is timeless. Davy's attributes are those that form the basis of how Americans see themselves. Self-reliance, honesty, keeping your word, and being plain-spoken remain characteristics that most Americans value.
A viewer does have to forgive several things that we now regard as politically incorrect, particularly in the first part of the first movie, where Davy seems to have little regard for Native Americans. However, in later episodes Davy clearly values his friendship with Native Americans and attempts to honor the commitments the U.S. government made to them.
I allowed my children to watch these movies when they were very young. Yes, there is some violence in these movies. However, Davy and George Russel used violence only when there appeared to be no other reasonable way out. Given that the era depicted in these movies was violent, I think the movies were directed and produced well.
These movies are a great way to introduce your children to an era when the American ethic for honesty, hard work, and trust were formulated. Davy Crockett was instrumental is being an example we can all follow, perhaps now more than ever. This movie is a must for every family film library. Enjoy!
Correcting an uninformed review.......2006-06-25
Regarding the review, below, written by "crazysunseteacher", this complete TV series DVD set is nothing at all like the two theatrical film releases. It contains the full, uncut original television episodes, as they were originally broadcast on "Disneyland" in the 1950s. These five TV programs included considerably more footage than the theatrical film releases.
The theatrical film releases have been available previously on VHS (and now on DVD) and anyone who bothered to watch them and compare them to the TV series DVD set would know immediately that there is considerable additional footage in the TV series, as released on this grand DVD set. There are even different musical cues in "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" in the film version that were specially written to accompany new film transitions. For starters, the very beginning of the film version omits the scene at Crockett's cabin with his family. How could you miss that if you watched the two versions at all?
The reviewer in question clearly did not bother to watch and compare carefully the two versions before posting the review. Please do not let this uninformed, inaccurate review dissuade you from buying this DVD set.
Patchin' up the crack.......2005-07-12
Half century ago, Walt Disney and Fess Parker struck gold with The Adventures of Davy Crockett. It was a very different time for Disney and television in general. It was a time when both parents and children could watch a prime time television show and not have to be embarrassed about anything. It was a time when things like profanity, sexual immorality, and blatant disregard for one's neighbor were unheard of on the screen. It was a time when the heroes would sometimes even do something as offensive today as quote from the Bible (which Davy Crockett occasionally does).
On a lighter note, today's generation will not readily recognize the need or desire to wear a hat made of raccoon's skin on one's head. Nor would most young people today (myself included) be familiar with a phrase like "Give 'em what fer!" For the record, this phrase refers to beating the living snot out of something or someone which has rubbed you the wrong way.
This DVD comprises part of the "Walt Disney Treasures" series. This is a series of classic Disney shows from different eras or genres and is hosted by film historian and critic Leonard Maltin. Other releases in this series include ON THE FRONT LINES (an exhaustive collection of the cartoon propaganda shorts Disney put out during World War II) and DISNEYLAND USA (which chronicles the opening of Disneyland to the public and how it evolved over the years). And there are many, many more.
Whether or not you grew up watching Davy Crockett is really beside the point. This show is for anyone who has a love for the old American pioneer stories; the Old West; and perhaps most of all, the old Disney.

There's dissension in the ranks during the Battle of the Bulge! OscarÂ(r) winner* Jack Palance and OscarÂ(r) nominee** Eddie Albert star in this "tightly directed" (Leonard Maltin) and "gritty film [that] packs a wallop" (Blockbuster Entertainment Guide). "Prepare to take a tight grip on the arms of your seat" (Los Angeles Times) Â- the power of Attack! will rattle you! When Lieutenant Joe Costa (Palance) learns that his men died because the commander, Captain Cooney (Albert), was too much of a coward to join the fight, Costa issues a serious warning: Don't let it happen again! But Cooney's cowardice forces Costa into a fateful choice: continue to risk the lives of his menÂ...or take the life of the captain!

Attack.......2007-03-21
Great cast, They do an outstanding job. I was a little disappointed in that I though there would be more battle action. However, still rate it a 3.5
Best War Movie!.......2007-03-15
I saw this movie as a child in the 60's and I never forgot it. I recently bought it and now I know why. It is exceptional. The cast is incredible, and the acting, especially Jack Palance, is remarkable. The human drama is what drives this film, but the battle scenes, without all the special effects available today, are, in my view, more credible and riveting than what I've seen in more recent war films. You do not have to be a WWII buff to love this movie.
the best.......2007-02-15
One of the five best war movies
ever made, in my opinion.
Everyone, Palance, Albert,
Lee Marvin, turn in superior
acting performances. Recall
this movie was made only
11 years after the end of
WW II, and that both Palance
and Marvin saw combat action.
Their experiences seemed to
bring an air of authenticity
to the tense, nail biting drama.
Excellent movie.
A violent and very effective war melodrama!.......2006-12-18
'Attack' is a violent exposure of cowardice and corruption among American officers fighting the Germans in Belgium... The film shows far less interest in America's war against Germany than in the fatal conflict between an embittered, idealist soldier and his cowardly superior...
Robert Aldrich said that his main argument was not the usual 'war is hell,' but the terribly corrupting influence you can have in the most normal, average human beings, and what terrible things it makes them capable of that they wouldn't be capable of otherwise.
The hero, Lieutenant Joe Costa (Jack Palance), is a tall, gaunt man from whom war has scraped away all the social graces... He suffers the injustices but cannot judge them... He seems strong, straightforward, but completely disillusioned...
Corruption is Captain Erskine Cooney (Eddie Albert), the company commander... He is a cowardly sadist captain who holds power because his father is a political bigwig back home, and because Colonel Clive Bartlett (Lee Marvin), has political aspiration... Marvin portrays the cynical superior officer who treats war as a political game, mindless of the sufferings of the ordinary soldier...
Palance and Albert play, at high-tension hysteria, two officers who clash on the battlefield...
The film opens with a squad being wiped out in an advance assault on an enemy position... Back at the company HQ a seething Palance confronts Albert: 'You double cross me. You play the gutless wonder just once more and I'll come back and I'll get you, Cooney.'
The skin is scraped away, leaving the raw fibers of hurt men... Touch it and you scream... Palance is going to rip Cooney apart, no going through proper channels, no intriguing, a direct, gut response: 'I'll shove this grenade down your throat and pull the pin.'
Despite its inevitable fondness for the dramatic values of combat and the savagery of men at arms, 'Attack!' is a violent and very effective war melodrama, even though by the end we seem to be in the company of raving lunatics rather than soldiers...
Good old fashioned war drama.......2006-09-08
This sounds like one of those routine war movies -- brave unit leader having problems with a cowardly superior just as the enemy launches a major offensive. But what sets "Attack!" apart from the others is its great cast and director Robert Aldrich's masterful handling of a story derived from a stage play.
Jack Palance is the tough lieutenant who has been let down once too often by his drunken and cowardly captain (Eddie Albert) just ahead of an attack by the Germans. Taking it up with their commanding officer (Lee Marvin) is no use as he is covering Albert's back because he is the son of an influential judge back home.
Matters come to a head when Albert sends Palance's unit head-first into a town crawling with Germans and then refuses to send in more troops to help them. You just know that a major confrontation is coming up, and its one heck of a ride getting there, thanks largely to the fine acting by Palance, Marvin, Albert and the bit players like Robert Strauss, Richard Jaeckel and Buddy Ebsen.
The US Army reportedly extended no cooperation to Aldrich after reading the hard-hitting script, and this movie was shot on the backlot with a shoe-string budget. Aldrich had only two tanks for his big action scenes, but none of these constraints show up on the screen. The action scenes help open up the movie and broaden its stage play origins.
The film isn't without the usual war movie problems, like the stereotypical evil Nazis and SS troops, but the such problems are few and far between.
Palance is in terrific form, carrying the picture on his broad shoulders. If ever proof was needed that the guy could act, this movie delivers it in spades. His character is no hero -- just a guy doing his job the best he can.
Lee Marvin turns in a strong performance too, and Eddie Albert is perfect as the cowardly captain, especially considering the fact that he was a real life war hero. But the real star is director Aldrich, who keeps things moving along at a nice clip.
The DVD serves up "Attack!" in all its black and white splendour...the print is good with little evidence of wear and tear. The soundtrack is a nice solid mono. A great thinking person's war movie.

A 1936 vehicle for Shirley Temple, <I>Captain January</I> is actually a remake of a 1922 feature starring Baby Peggy Montgomery as an orphan informally adopted by the lighthouse keeper who rescues her from a storm. The Temple version, directed by David Butler, finds the little star playing a child named, well, Star, who is rescued and taken in by a salty old lighthouse-keeper known as Captain January (Guy Kibbee). Like a briny variation on Bret Harte's classic story, "The Luck of Roaring Camp," <I>Captain January</I> finds Star nurtured by a community of aging sailors who adore her, including her hoofer friend Paul (Buddy Ebsen), with whom Star sings and dances one of the most-beloved numbers from a Shirley Temple movie, "At the Codfish Ball." Star's fable-like paradise is disrupted by the appearance of a truant officer (Sara Haden), who determines the child isn't receiving proper schooling and overall care. That decision leads to a bit of conflict and despair, but with Temple wiggling, singing, and charming her way through her character's mostly enchanted circumstances, it's not hard to have faith in happy endings. The film is offered in both its original black-and-white presentation and in colorized form. Special features include a trailer and clips from Temple's appearance at the presentation of a memorial to Will Rogers. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Description
Four year old star (Temple) has been living with Captain January (Guy Kibbee) ever since he rescued her form a shipwreck when she was a baby. Now their happy life together is unexpectedly threatened when the town's new truant officer tries to take her away from the lighthouse keeper and place her in an institution.

An Oldie but Goodie.......2007-05-11
I had been waiting a long time for Amazon to get this movie in on DVD. As soon as they got it, they sent me notice and I bought it. It is a cute movie. Makes me remember the days when I was a little girl and watched the Shirley Temple Theater every Sunday with my big sister. Most people remember the song in the movie, "At the Codfish Ball", but my favorite is "The Right Somebody to Love." Good family movie. Kids need more like this these days.
WE LOVE SHIRLEY TEMPLE!!!.......2007-03-17
I just had to get this movie for my young daughter. My daughter had a tap dance recital, and the song they were dancing to was "Cod Fish Ball", which is in this movie. She has watched this over & over :) The whole movie is great, but our favorite part was watching Shirley Temple dance with Buddy Ebsen.
A RESTORED SCENE HAS BEEN PUT BACK IN!!!!!!!!.......2006-07-26
This is one of Shirley's best movies and, the color version looks fantastic!!! The print used is in very good condition and the color just looks quite stunning!!
The exciting thing of all about this release is that there is a fantastic restored scene that has not been seen since it was first released!!
This scene happens after Shirley ends her "AT THE CODFISH BALL" number. The scene where the old bearded guy tells Shirley about "spitting", and the scene shows him spit and then make a funny sound and then he has Shirley try it and she does and Shirley makes a spitting sound and then such a cute noise, she does this spitting 3 times and the sound 3 times and each time she does this, she looks so very adorable!!!
Of course this scene is a real treat for all of us who are big fans of little Shirley, and to see a NEW scene of her is a big time treat!!
As an extra on the DVD there is a newsreel of Shirley being anxious to pull the rope to a Will Rodgers momorial. Notice how she seems to get kind of mad when she is first shown, she does this thing with her arms and has such a face at that point and the guys around her all look at her when she does this.
This is a MUST HAVE DVD if you are a fan of little Shirley!!
Enchanting and delightful!.......2006-07-23
This enchanting tail about an orphan adopted by an old sea captain will capture your heart and your family's heart. In another heart warming and spectacularly acted film by Ms Temple, you won't want to miss a single moment. Why not get family values back and start watching these with your children instead of putting them on the computer?
Great dancing scenes from some famous actors and of course the usual singing round this great film out! I wish they made like this today!

A callow Southern aristocrat (the charismatically challenged Robert Wagner) acquires character and democratic values in the crucible of combat, via a laboriously complicated script that begins in the middle of things and then loads on explanatory flashbacks like a forklift. On "an island in the Pacific, 1945," the scion of a Tennessee cotton dynasty becomes not only comrade-in-arms but also friend to the sharecroppers he once scorned. Although the jungle island is crawling with Japanese snipers and patrols, the greatest danger comes from U.S. officers who are variously incompetent, "yellow," or--in the case of company commander Broderick Crawford--certifiably insane. Screenwriter Harry Brown wrote the World War II classic <I>A Walk in the Sun</I> 11 years earlier, but the characters here are a dull lot and the dialogue terminally flatfooted. However, director Richard Fleischer blocks his action scenes to take full advantage of the CinemaScope format. <I>--Richard T. Jameson</I>
Description
Robert Wagner, Terry Moore, Broderick Crawford and Buddy Ebsen star in this absorbing drama about a young, self-centered recruit who comes of age during WWII. Sam Gifford (Wagner) is a successful cotton planter who treats his sharecroppers as if they were little more than farm machinery. But during combat in the Pacific, as he sees "quality" people crack, endures life under a sadistic officer (Crawford), and learns true friendship, from a "cropper" (Ebsen), Gifford slowly discovers there's more to a person than social class and good breeding.
Customer Reviews:
Nothing depresses or disheartens the blood of a soldier on the battle field more than the sudden sharp sound of a rifle shot and.......2006-12-18
Gifford (Robert Wagner) plays a Southern landowner who treats his croppers badly... His beautiful wife Jenny (Terry Moore) just saw a side of him she never saw before... Gifford argues that Jenny has just seen his business side... But Gifford only came to realize the error of his rude ways when he was called to active duty and put among the troops in the Pacific theater in World War II...
The film opens with Gifford reassigned to a company posted up in the hills, a very isolated area under the command of a fanatical and probably queer army captain called Waco (Broderick Crawford).
With brief flashbacks, we discover that Gifford holds a well-earned Silver Star but one day, his emotions became dominant and his self-control completely lost when he assaults an officer in combat nearly killing him...
The attempt of Gifford-- seen to get a little shaky in combat--to master danger as far as to walk right along with the enemy, or not to leave the island without saving a wounded pal, hit the core of what must have happened on battlefields in World War II...
Aside from a beachhead landing and a final battle with the Japanese, Fleisher's film shockingly touches on the US officers martyred at the hands of Japanese snipers...
Good WWII flick.......2006-08-28
This is a good 50's era Cinemascope war film about a National Guardsman's harrowing experience after his "deep South" unit is mobilized in WWII, and sent into action during the Pacific campaign. Great cast, including Robert Wagner, Buddy Ebsen, and Broderick Crawford.
WRONG INFO?.......2006-08-28
THE FIRST REVIEWER CALLED THIS A VHS BUT IF I READ CORRECTLY THE REVIEW SHOULD BE ABOUT A DVD NOT VHS. I READ REVIEWS FOR INFO WHICH MANY TIMES INFLUENCES MY PURCHASE. OH WELL!!!!!!!!!!!
The Cinematography is quite spectacular!!.......2006-04-10
I recall watching this movie on color TV in 1969 and being impressed with the visual awe within the story itself. Flashbacks are the basic form of narration. Pay attention and be prepared to watch it a few times to soak it up. This one stands alongside the well-presented WWII films of the 1950's like Battle Cry and The Naked and The Dead, though somewhat flatter in tone.
Between Heaven and Hell.......2006-02-25
This is one of my all time favorite movies. And still is!
Thank you.

andrew stevens is philip kent.......2006-05-23
andrew stevens (son of stella stevens) stars as philip kent in this first mini-series based on the john jakes kent family novels.
stevens is a french boy who learns that he is the title person after finding out that his real father is an english nobelman and heads to england to claim his birthright. his fathers family doesn't intend to let him have anything and tries to have him killed. this causes philip to flee to america, under the name philip kent , and gets him involved in the fight for liberty.
this is a very good show, even if it mainly plays like a soap opera, and stevens is quite good as philip. give this one a chance and you may like it.
the beginning of the kents in america.......2006-02-14
i saw this mini-series when it first air in the 70's on a late night channel when they had to call it the kent family chronicles because you couldn't say the word bastard on t.v.! how times have changed. well i felt it was a very good show and i bought the books and read them. now on that level the mini-series isn't near as good as the book, but it is very entertaing and fun to watch. there are very few movies or t.v. shows about this time in american history for some reason but i felt it did catch the idea behind the books very well. we see the birth of america through theeyes of philip kent former french boy with titled english father who kepet him hidden from his family. after the duke of kent dies the family sends people out to kill philip and forces him to flee to america where he takes the name philip kent and starts a new life as a printer in boston in the early 1770's. before long the man is swept into the colonies atemp to break free from england. it is more a soap than anything but it is great fun and sets up the second mini-series the rebels. worth a look
VERY GOOD for..........2004-10-06
After reading all of the books in the series by John Jakes, I was very eager to watch this movie...I was not disappointed!! Of course this movie is not up to today's standard of made for t.v. movies but considering the time it was made it is very good and gets BETTER after the first hour!!
IF YOU LOVE the John Jakes books, you should watch this movie!!!
Dreadful.......2002-06-14
I bought this because I am reading all 8 volumes. What a waste (the video, that is ....) The acting is embarrassing and over the top, the music is intrusive, and some of the casting, such as Tom Bosley, is laughable. Don't waste your time with this made-for-TV drivel from the 70's.
The Kent Family Chronicles - expected more?.......1998-12-31
Well, thats it. The first mini series of one of John Jake`s best selling sagas ever: The Kent Family Chronicles. For a German viewer like me, it was an experience because this series was never shown on German television. Spoiled by the fascinating North and South Trilogy and the marvellous and price-winning mini series it was a little disappointment at first. Young Andrew Stevens as Philip Kent seemed a bit overtaxed in the first scenes but became better and better. The whole setting seemed pale and the dialogues were little more than just "small talk". But I think they got round to it by the middle of the film. When Philip arrived in America beautiful and convincing Kim Cattral appeared and Andrew Stevens seemed to act more out of his stomach than out of his head (forgetting what he learned at acting school). It became a pleasure to watch, see how everything fit together (and everyone:Olivia Hussey esp.). All in all it is worth to watch and makes you want to watch the other two sequels, too. And: you must not forget that North and South was filmed nearly seven years later with a much bigger budget perhaps. Watch it!!
