From the moment that Prince Eric's ship emerged from the fog in the opening credits it was apparent that Disney had somehow, suddenly recaptured that "magic" that had been dormant for thirty years. In the tale of a headstrong young mermaid who yearns to "spend a day, warm on the sand," Ariel trades her voice to Ursula, the Sea Witch (classically voiced by Pat Carroll), for a pair of legs. Ariel can only succeed if she receives true love's kiss in a few day's time and she needs all the help she can from a singing crab named Sebastian, a loudmouth seagull, and a flounder. The lyrics and music by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken are top form: witty and relevant, and they advance the story (go on, hum a few bars of "Under the Sea"). Mermaid put animation back on the studio's "to do" list and was responsible for ushering Beauty and the Beast to theaters. A modern Disney classic. --Keith Simanton

Customer Reviews:
One of the last great Disney Movies.......2007-05-28
Mermaid was one of Disney's last great movies.....before they started trying to spin each classic tale into a 2nd, 3rd movie....each meaningless money making machines.
The Little Mermaid is the Disney version of the Hans Christian Anderson tale. Disney brings it to life with the beautiful Ariel, and a whole cast of loveable characters- Flounder, Eric, Sebastian, Flounder, Skuttle.
Ariel, the youngest of many daughters is bored with life under water and want to explore life on land as a human. She see's a man aboard a boat and falls in love. His name is Eric. When a storm rages, Ariel saves Eric and leaves his ashore. He sees her and can't forget her face. Against her fathers wishes Ariel dreams of life on land. She bargains with the sea witch Ursula to turn her into a human. The price she pays is her voice. She has to make Eric fall in love with her- but she has no voice.
Ursula uses Ariels voice to bring her father to her knees. In the end, she is overcome, and Triton- Ariels father is saved, and let's Ariel go- to become a human.
The music is some of the most creative animated music EVER. From Kiss the girl to Under the Sea, each songs is singable, and unforgettable. Boy and girls alike will love this movie about dreams, courage, and adventure.

<I>The Music Man</I> was one of the last great movie musicals from any studio, and it proved to be that rarest of events: a Broadway show that was measurably improved by its transition to the screen. Robert Preston made his musical debut--both live and on film--as "Professor" Harold Hill, the upbeat charlatan who promises to teach a small-town boys band by the "think system." But it's the part Preston was born to play and the one for which he will always be best remembered. Composer Meredith Willson based <I>The Music Man</I> on his own small-town Midwestern boyhood, circa 1912, a quasi-mythical place where the old-maid librarian looks and sings like Shirley Jones. The boy himself is an adorable Ron Howard, lisp-singing "Gary, Indiana." Willson's entire score, featuring a combination of what are now standards, such as "Goodnight My Someone" and "Till There Was You" and show-specific numbers ("Trouble," "76 Trombones"), is never less than infectious. This dazzling special edition is also as bright and sunny as any 4th of July in Iowa could ever hope to be. <I>--Robert Windeler</I>
Description
Let 76 trombones lead the big parade from the Great White Way into your home. It's the Music Man, the screen version of one of Broadway's all-time blockbusters, a skyburst of Americana as irresistible as 4th of July fireworks. Robert Preston and Shirley J Year: 1962
Customer Reviews:
Great film. Poor picture quality.......2007-06-18
This is a classic musical film and I have nothing but glowing things to say about it, however on my 50" plasma television, the picture quality is sub par and I would love to see it remastered.
Fantastic!!.......2007-06-12
I always enjoy the show but especially with no commercials and watching the way they do the "Seventy-Six Trombones". Thanks. Kimberly.
the music man.......2007-05-26
This has always been one of my favorites. Great music, romance and an ever immportant lesson on life. Can never be replaced by the Disney version that came out a few years ago. Original is always good.
Ultimate entertainment.......2007-05-24
This musical simply had it all: Humor, drama, romance, great music, and final redemption/ultimate happiness for the con man!
Review of The Music Man.......2007-05-22
An excellent classic movie musical with an excellent story line. There are significant comedic instances and areas of plot to make this interesting for any number of audiences. The score itself is worth owning this edition. It is an entertaining movie from start to finish and the rousing ending brings it all together.

Stanley Kramer's sprawling 1963 comedy about a search for buried treasure by at least a dozen people--all played by well-known entertainers of their day--is the kind of mass comedy that Hollywood hasn't made in many years. (Another example from around the same time is Blake Edwards's <I>The Great Race</I>.) After a number of strangers (including Milton Berle, Jonathan Winters, Sid Caesar, Phil Silvers, and others) witness a dying stranger (Jimmy Durante) identify the location of hidden money, a conflict-ridden hunt begins, watched over carefully by a suspicious cop (Spencer Tracy). The ensuing two and a half hours of mayhem has its ups and downs--some bits and performers are certainly funnier than others. But Kramer, who is better known for socially conscious, serious cinema (<I>Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?</I>), is in a mood for broad comic characterization, and some of his jokes are so intentionally obvious (Durante literally kicks a bucket when he dies), they'd have a place in <I>Airplane!</I> Watch for lots of cameo appearances, including Jerry Lewis (who had called Kramer and asked him why he hadn't been invited to participate). <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Customer Reviews:
The mother of all comedic chase movies.......2007-05-15
The best chase comedy ever. Great cast, locations. It brings back memories of LA area in the fifties and sixties. One of my favorite comedies of all time.
An absolute "must have"!.......2007-05-13
Sure... it's dated; that's part of its charm. That said, it's one of the most madcap, zany comedies I've ever seen and is a "must have" for those of us old enough to appreciate the all-star cast of comic icons. Also, if you love old cars, the vehicles you'll see in this movie are worth the price of the DVD alone. Pure entertainment.
One of the best comedies.......2007-05-12
This is a very funny movie with an all star comedy cast. From Jimmy Durante "kicking the bucket" to the fire escape at the end, you'll laugh all the way through. The number of comedy stars in this movie are almost overwhelming. I personally think Jonathon Winters steals the movie.
abolute madness, loved it!!!.......2007-04-11
I first saw this movie with my father when i was a young boy for some reason it never left my mind, so out of shear curiosity i purchased this movie and fell in love with again.
I later found out that there are a few of us that love this movie so much that they have taken pictures of all those wonderful places and made a montage of before and after pictures showing the "Big W" and the back yard where it once stood.
In conclusion i just loved this movie. What more can i say Oh btw Amazon got the movies to me in less than a week, isn't that great.
One of the best comedies ever.......2007-03-30
Great cast help make this one of the funniest movies ever.

Ariel and her husband, Prince Eric, have a little problem with their daughter, Melody, in the sequel to Disney's landmark <I>The Little Mermaid</I>. Melody is threatened by Morgana, the evil sister of the sea witch Ursula (both voiced by Pat Carroll). Before you can say "Briar Rose," Melody's parents decide to keep their daughter's roots a secret, forbidding her to learn about the ocean while Morgana is around. Now the budding teenager secretly frolics in the sea with Ariel's old friends, Sebastian and Scuttle. When she learns the truth from Morgana, Melody becomes an unknowing pawn in her scheme--and Mom has to take to the sea again to help.
As with Disney's other made-for-video sequels, <I>The Little Mermaid II</I> looks and sounds wonderful (and reunites much of the same vocal talent). Four- to nine-year-olds who grew up with the original will certainly enjoy seeing the friends again. A new set of artists has come up with four catchy tunes and some fun new characters, including Tip and Dash, a pensive penguin and his blubbery walrus friend. Yet, where <I>Beauty and the Beast</I> had a deliberate Christmas-themed sequel, and <I>Pocahontas</I> told the tale of her historical trip to England, the plot here is very forced. It is pretty much a rehash of the first film with different characters. Tip and Dash are a reincarnation of Timon and Pumbaa, and Morgana is exactly like her sister, except thinner. Besides the stellar music, this unneeded sequel also misses another important aspect of the original--heart. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

Story is a nice continuation of the first (for kids).

Thank you
It's Probably What you Expect -- An In-Depth Review (SPOILER).......2007-03-07
"The Little Mermaid II: Return to the Sea". Well, just by looking at that title, it's not exactly difficult to tell what sort of sequel it will be. Not just, "The Little Mermaid II", but they added a little hint for you: RETURN TO -- as in, a rerun of -- THE SEA.
Therefore, it's what you would expect from Disney. First off -- technicalities. They've taken some shortcuts and used CAPS animation, so it lacks that old-fashioned Disney look from the original Little Mermaid and the "classics". It doesn't look too bad or too cheesy, though. The colors are only a tiny bit more neon than before, and it's only a bit overly-smoothed. It's not as bad as many would make it seem.
The voices are, with the exception of Eric, kept, and they sound great. My only pet peeve is Melody's voice. Technically, I am YOUNGER than the character, and much younger than her voice actress Tara Strong, but I solemnly promise that I do not sound that much like a hyperactive six-year-old. But, really, what can you expect from the voice of Bubbles from the Powerpuff Girls?
The story, if you haven't gathered it yet, is simple: Ariel is grown up. Eric is grown up. They've had a baby girl named Melody, who inherits her mother's contempt of boundaries. Apparently, Ursula the Sea Witch has a younger sister named Morgana, who conveniently shows up at Melody's christening (Sleeping Beauty, anyone?). She attempts to ransom Melody for King Triton's trident, fails, and is (sort of) banished from the kingdom. Ariel decides it's too dangerous for Melody to know anything about the world of merpeople -- including King Triton, Melody's grandfather -- and hides it from her daughter.
It might be nice to mention here that only King Triton or his ancestors/descendents can remove the triton from its holster-like thingie, which is where it is stored when not in his hands.
Melody, however, longs to go in the sea or even be a mermaid (though is not sure they even exist.) When she finds a mysterious golden seashell "locket" -- which, in perfect Disney fashion, is roughly four or five times the size of a normal locket, to get the point across to the younger audiences -- she has an angsty teenage fit at her mother, Ariel, and makes up her mind to run away. Or, technically, rows away in an absolutely tiny rowboat.
Morgana seizes the chance to use a descendent of King Triton, lures Melody into her trust by using Ursula's bottled magic (?) to transform her into a mermaid, and weepily convinces Melody to "recover [her] lost trident". Melody, not knowing any better and only wanting to "belong" as a mermaid, captures the trident with the help of a talkative penguin, "Tip", and a blubbery walrus, "Dash".
Of course, Ariel and Eric are frantic during all of this, searching here on the land AND sea (coincidentally the name of the finale song), which, in effect, causes Ariel to be turned into a mermaid for the purpose of searching underwater for her daughter. If you think about it, Ariel is acting as a sort of tour guide through the original film: her grotto and "Under the Sea" rock are featured during a little musical "duet" she sings with Melody.
Naturally, Ariel and her re-united pal Flounder arrive at Morgana's lair -- strangely made of ice and above water, as opposed to Ursula's bony underwater lair -- at the exact moment that Melody arrives with the trident. Mother and daughter go through the traditional you're-a-mermaid-deal before Morgana reminds Melody that she is still waiting for her trident. Ariel rebukes this and begs Melody to not give the trident to Morgana. Melody, with a new bargaining chip, rubs it in her mother's face that she never told her about merpeople and -- with a dramatic "too late, Mom!" -- hands over the trident.
The obvious happens: Morgana gains command over all the seas, Melody is locked away with Flounder in a quickly-made ocean prison cell to await the loss of her fins and underwater breathing, King Triton's sea-army and Eric's land-army come to defeat Morgana and fail, and ultimately, Melody escapes with the help of Tip, Dash, and Flounder to reclaim the trident and give it to her newly-reintroduced grandfather, Triton.
It could've stopped there, but didn't. After the climatic battle, the first thing King Triton says to his granddaughter is that he'll give her a choice -- come to Atlantica and live as a mermaid with him, or stay with her mother and father on the land. She invents a new option: break down the (literal) wall between merpeople and human people once and for all. Voila! The End! Complete with an exeptionally good-looking teenage mer-boy and a trident-created rainbow!
Though it took a few cues from it's prequel, it was a pretty entertaining story, once you've sprinkled in a few songs:
"Down to the Sea" -- opening scene, Jodi Benson, mostly. Sweet and catchy. Almost as good as one of the originals.
"For a Moment" -- Tara Strong and Jodi Benson. Beautiful song, period.
"Tip and Dash" -- Tara Strong, Max Casella, and Stephen Furst. I'm sorry to say that this song simply ANNOYED me. It does succeed in getting stuck in your head, however, which may be the point.
"Here on the Land and Sea" -- finale, chorus. This is also a catchy song, though not especially moving. A good, solid, happy-ending song.
Characters...what can I say? Ariel has lost her characterizing feistyness, but, unless you refuse to accept a "new" Ariel, it probably won't bother you. She's more motherly than I thought the teenage Ariel could be, but that makes sense, as she is...oh, thirty- or forty-something now. Eric, I'm sorry to say, was a bit wimpy until he brought out his army. And he was my favorite Disney Prince. Tip and Dash, well, I never felt sorry for them or cheered them on. I didn't really dislike Melody until she started using too much out-of-date slang ("Hey, fellas! What's kickin'?") and was selfish and didn't think about consequences. Sebastian...good ol' Sebastian. He stayed just the same. Same with Scuttle. Flounder, on the other hand, has turned into a beady-eyed, deep-voiced obese yellow-and-blue father fish. Morgana was actually very hateable, and I loved her sharp-witted anchovy of a shark, Undertoe. Her pet stingrays, supposedly a replacement for Flotsam and Jetsam, didn't impress me nor scare me. What was really scary about them? They just laughed in this hissy way reminiscint of a toddler or a bat.
Overall, however cynical I may have been, it is a good -- not excellent, but very good -- sequel to the original. It's less epic than the first, certainly, but as the original was based on a long-known fairytale and Return to the Sea was based on the Disney adaption of the long-known fairytale, it's hard to compare them. Kids won't really care about the little characterization flaws or annoying dialogue, and it is, after all, marketed toward kids.
Excellent movie. .......2007-02-18
This is a good movie. Unlike Ariel Ariel's thirteen year old Melody dreams of being a mermaid like Ariel, dreamed of being human. But in the upcoming Ariel movie,The Little Mermaid 3 ARIEL'S MELODY Ariel is pregnant with Melody at the begining of the movie. How come Melody is thirteen in here? I like this movie and I like the fact that it doesn't have Melody in her late-teens like Ariel was. Melody goes to Morganna{Ursala's sister} with her need{want} like Ariel goes to Ursala. The two movies are a little simualar and both very good. The little Mermaid 2 has quite a few songs in it here are all the ones I can remember: DOWN TO THE SEA, FOR A MOMENT, DIP AND DASH and HERE ON THE LAND AND SEA. ENJOY THIS MOVIE.
P.S THE LITTLE MERMAID 3 IS COMING OUT IN NOVEMBER!
P.P.S I HOPE YOU LIKE THIS MOVIE!
P.P.S.S . I think this is just as good as the first little mermaid one. Hope you do to!
Walt Disney is Rolling Over in his Grave.......2007-02-08
Of course a straight-to-video sequel is not going to be as polished or professional as the orignal, but even my dog could have written a better set of dialogue to go with the plot to Little Mermaid II.
The music stinks. I understand that for straight-to-video movies they aren't going to hire the big guns to come in and compose an Oscar worthy score, but really, a child could have written better music and more imaginative lyrics. Even children aren't going to take the songs seriously, they are that bad.
The wall thing was stupid, Ariel was almost senile wondering around the castle not knowing where the heck her brat is! Flounder is old and fat, and Prince Eric is a drain on society.
Melody is an ungrateful brat and if my daughter were like her, I would smack her silly. There are far better teenage girl role models who do not fit in that are way more pleasant than she is.
Then we also have the cheap token Timon and Pumbaa pair with the penguin and the walrus.
This movie is for Disney to make some quick cash, and for parents to get rid of having their kids underfoot for 75 minutes (though it might not even be good enough to do that)
It might be worth renting if you get severely drunk before watching it.

This three-disc set, part of Warner's Essential Classics series, collects three truly classic films--<I>The Music Man</I>, <I>Meet Me in St. Louis</I>, and <I>Seven Brides for Seven Brothers</I>--in one inexpensive package. The drawback is you don't get the second disc of either <I>Meet Me in St. Louis</I> or <I>Seven Brides for Seven Brothers</I>, so if you're a featurette junky or if you simply have to see the reshot version of <I>Seven Brides</I>, you'll want to stick with the individual releases. But this set does include the commentary tracks and any other material that was on the first disc of those two-disc sets (<I>The Music Man</I> still has everything that was on the one-disc release), and best of all, they have the great remastered pictures of the previous releases. So if you just want the movies looking better than ever with some bonus features thrown in for good measure, the price per movie makes this set an attractive bargain. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>

Great Musicals at a fabulous price!.......2007-05-14
While this set doesn't include all the extra material dvd's at this price it's still well worth it for these great musicals. They are indeed classics as the title states. My favorites would be "Meet Me in St. Loius" and "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers". Not very found of "The Music Man" but the package is still cheaper than what I would pay individually. The movies speak for themselves.

Grandchildren Loved The Little Mermaid.......2007-05-17

The Little Mermaid (2-Disc Platinum Edition).......2007-05-13
Bought this for my wife. She's always loved the story and had been wanting the DVD for a while. When the special edition came out, I grabbed it. The commentaries are great. The history of the story, the animation process, and the cast/crew is wonderful.
Little Mermaid.......2007-05-09
An upgrade to DVD. Wonderful movie to watch, beautiful coloring and music. Ariel can sing the pants off a crab.

This savvy Disney hit from 1969 made a star of a Volkswagen precisely when the car was becoming more popular than ever. Dean Jones and Michele Lee head the cast in a story about a VW bug with a mind of its own. Disney point man Robert Stevenson, director of <I>The Absent-Minded Professor</I>, <I>Mary Poppins</I>, and lots of other Disney live-action hits, makes the slapstick work perfectly and keeps the laughs coming. Buddy Hackett is very funny in a supporting role.
The first sequel, <I>Herbie Rides Again</I> (1974), is similar enough to the first film's charm and raucous comedy that it works on its own. Neither Dean Jones nor Michelle Lee are back, but a nice cast of familiar pros (including Disney vet Ken Berry) keeps things moving along slickly. The story finds Herbie helping Helen Hayes--yes, the First Lady of the American Theater--keep out of the clutches of Keenan Wynn's villain.
Dean Jones came back to the fold for this third lap around the block, <I>Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo</I> (1977), which finds him racing in the famed city while thieves plant a stolen diamond in Herbie's gas tank. The plot is forced and conventional, but the cast is the thing: the excitable Don Knotts (<I>The Apple Dumpling Gang</I>) and the tormentable Roy Kinnear (Mr. Salt from <I>Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory</I>) are good men to have in a potboiler such as this.
The fourth movie, <I>Herbie Goes Bananas</I> (1980), is a wooden story about Herbie's funny adventures heading toward a race in Brazil. Charles Martin Smith and Steven W. Burns try hard to bring some life into this project, but it just doesn't happen. There is one good laugh in the whole thing, in a scene where Herbie becomes a matador. Otherwise, even the picturesque, south-of-the-border stuff doesn't help. Harvey Korman and Cloris Leachman star. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Description
Herbie Goes Bananas - English/Spanish DVD- Set in exotic locations in Central America, the internationally renowned Herbie, everyone's favorite "love bug," demonstrates his special brand of "car-isma" and high-octane humor in this action-packed, stunt-filled comedy outing. The fun begins when Herbie sets sail for Rio de Janeiro's Grande Premio racing competition with his two new owners. En route, they get sidetracked by a smuggling syndicate, pestered by a pint-sized pickpocket, and bullied by a raging bull. Laughter shifts into high gear in this zany Disney comedy! Herbie Goes To Monte Carlo - DVD- Herbie, the VW with heart, adds some international flair to his lovable personality! Upon entering a Paris-to-Monte Carlo road race, Herbie falls hood over wheels in love when he encounters a sleek, sporty, light blue Lancia. Also vying for Herbie's attention is a gang of jewel thieves, who've ingeniously hidden a stolen gem in Herbie's gas tank! Thus begins a madcap chase across the French countryside that only The Love Bug could create! Herbie Rides Again - DVD- Herbie is back in gear -- revved up and ready for more madcap comedy adventure in this sidesplitting sequel to Disney's popular smash hit, THE LOVE BUG! This time Herbie's leading lady is award-winning actress Helen Hayes, superb in the very first screen comedy of her illustrious career. Aided by co-stars Ken Berry and Stefanie Powers, she's out to save her beloved Victorian firehouse home from the wrecking ball of greedy real estate tycoon Keenan Wynn, Disney's most lovable villain. It's up to Herbie and his bug battalion to "come through in the clutch"! Fasten your seatbelts and get ready for a really great time! The Love Bug - DVD Special Edition- For the first time ever you can enjoy this timeless classic in a Special Edition DVD. Fully restored to look and sound as it was originally intended, it also features hours of exclusive bonus materials your entire family will enjoy again and again. He's the star who provides the most laughs per gallon. He's Herbie, the lovable car with a mind of his own. Dean Jones, Michele Lee, and Buddy Hackett join Herbie in this revved-up comedy classic. Jones plays down-on-his-luck race car driver Jim Douglas, who reluctantly teams up with the little machine. Douglas thinks his sudden winning streak is due to his skill, not Herbie's. He finally realizes the car's worth when a sneaky rival plots to steal Herbie for himself. But it's Herbie who'll steal your heart in this wildly fun roller-coaster ride of a movie you'll never forget!

This movie is much better than the re-makes with that insufferable Lindsey Lohan. The oldies are still the best!
THE FIRST IS THE BEST ALL IN GOOD FUN.......2007-03-25
The Love Bug is a very entertaining Disney Comedy and the 2 disc special edition which is included in this box set is excellent. The other three sequels are not as good, but still good family entertainment. If you find the box set at a fair prce, buy it.The Transfers aren't bad,but they could be better.
My kids love Herbie!.......2007-03-08
Nothing better than watching movies from my childhood with my children. They love Herbie!
Great Family Entertainment.......2007-01-10
There are not many family friendly movies being released today, so I turned to the classics from my childhood. The Herbie movies are fun and my two boys (age 4 and 6) absolutely love them. We watch one of these four movies at least once a week. Although all of the movies are entertaining, the best of the foursome is Herbie Rides Again, with The Love Bug a close second. If you have young boys in your house, I highly recommend introducing them to Herbie. These are movies that stand the test of time!

The human beings are almost as interesting as the title character in this surprisingly subtle and engaging film about the cross-country adventures of a smart-mouthed parrot. As director John Roberts deploys the footage, the bird becomes a vivid personality; every quizzical twist of his head is oddly expressive. The people who interact with Paulie are a quirky and interesting bunch as well, and the casting is topnotch: Tony Shalhoub (<I>The Siege</I>) as a Russian immigrant janitor, Cheech Marin as an open-hearted mariachi musician, and Gena Rowlands as a widowed painter in a footloose Winnebago--all are vividly eccentric individuals, memorable in their own right. There are some tired swipes at the cold-blooded meanies of Big Science (beady-eyed researcher Bruce Davison has Paulie clapped in irons), but for the most part the film respects the complexity of everyone's motivations, and that's virtually unheard of in today's Hollywood, even in films supposedly designed for grownups. <I>--David Chute</I>

Great Service.......2007-05-19
I received my DVD really quick from sender. I will use their service again.
Pauli.......2007-05-18
This is just a delightful and inspring family movie. The actors all support the plot. The lessons are well illustrated. The concern for animals is strong without being dogmatic. Just a great 2 hours of enjoyment.
A movie I could send to my granddaughter!.......2007-05-17
Funny, intelligent, warm and touching - and a movie that wouldn't embarrass me if I were watching it with my 12 year old granddaughter. I'm mailing it to her immediately (she lives out-of-town). I really enjoyed this movie and I would recommend it to anyone, any age. It has something for everyone in it.
I wish Hollywood would come out with more movies like this one. The actors are great and natural. The birds and animals in this movie are amazing.
A great family movie!.......2007-05-14
"Paulie" is a sweet movie and perfert for a family video night! The parrot tells such a wonderful story of love, loss, trust - and the breaking thereof - that there are many 'moral of the story' moments! Gena Rowlands is wonderful in showing that no matter the age, or circumstance, we all have adventure within us! It may be hidden under fear and friends (in this case, Paulie) can help us 'stretch our wings'. The man who stars in this, currently seen on the t.v. show "Monk", did a wonderful job in his intent listening and resolve to help this bird - his friend. I would highly recommend this movie to anyone who wants to spend an evening just 'kicking back' and enjoying a good story.
Paulie.......2007-04-23
I am a parrot owner, and loved the movie. Even non-bird fanatics will enjoy this family movie. It's captivating, touching, and children and adults can equally relate to having learning difficulties while growing up, having a pet as your best friend, to losing loved ones and romantic relationships that didn't happen as we had hoped. Throughout all of Paulie's adventures with the different characters in the movie, you're always rooting for Paulie and that he'll find his "Marie", and the ending leaves you with a "feel good" feeling. I highly recommend this to anyone, and especially bird lovers. It made me look at my parrot(whose been with me for 28 years) with a renewed sense of wonder and respect for her intelligence and wondering what's she's thinking even though she doesn't talk like Paulie!

This savvy Disney hit from 1969 made a star of a Volkswagen precisely when the car was becoming more popular than ever. Dean Jones and Michele Lee head the cast in a story about a VW bug with a mind of its own. Disney point man Robert Stevenson, director of The Absent-Minded Professor, Mary Poppins, and lots of other Disney live-action hits, makes the slapstick work perfectly and keeps the laughs coming. Buddy Hackett is very funny in a supporting role. --Tom Keogh
Description
For the first time ever you can enjoy this timeless classic in a Special Edition DVD.

"Without a real car, I'm only half a man.".......2007-03-19
Jim Douglas (Dean Jones) is an aging race car driver who hasn't had much luck in recent years. He keeps wrecking cars and loosing sponsors. Walking by the show room of a specialized dealership, he notices the beautiful secretary, Carole Bennett (Michele Lee) hanging a sign and decides to go inside and flirt a little. Their conversation is interrupted at first by Ms. Bennett's boss, Mr. Peter Thorndyke (David Tomlinson) and then by a little Volkswagen Beetle deluxe ragtop sedan. Mr. Thorndyke verbally abuses the little car, but Jim sticks up for it. Unbeknownst to everyone, the little car has a head and heart of its own and follows Jim home. His partner and mechanic, Tennessee Steinmetz (Buddy Hackett) immediately falls in love with the car and names him Herbie (in real life the screenwriters took the name Herbie from one of Hackett's comedy routines so it was right that he bestowed the name Herbie upon the car). Jim soon discovers that Herbie isn't like a typically car and eventually enters some races with Herbie and starts winning again. Things start looking up, but Jim's pride and vanity get in the way and threaten to ruin everything, including his racing career and his budding romance with Carole.
I never saw THE LOVE BUG when it was first released in theatres. I wasn't even born, yet. I do know that at an early age in an era before cable and VCRs my brother and I happened to see the Herbie movies and fell in love with the cute little car. THE LOVE BUG was made at a very interesting time, both at Walt Disney and the world at large. Originally released in 1969, the film became the highest grossing movie of that year. Walt himself had died just a few years before and there were many at the time who questioned whether the studio would be able to survive intact. THE LOVE BUG was one of those films that seemed to show the world that even though the founder and creator was dead, his dream would go on. The film represents everything good that Walt Disney tried to portray in all of his movies. For example, that the best things in life don't necessarily come in the biggest and brightest packages, that even though life is difficult you shouldn't give up hope, and that love is a very powerful force of good. It's not hard to see why people flocked to the movie. Just a year before Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Robert Kennedy had been assassinated and Chicago erupted in a riot at the Democratic National Convention. People were tired of seeing dark and dreary things. Went they went to the movies they didn't just want to escape. They wanted to be told stories that filled them light, hope, and love.
In the post-modern era we have inherited and are continuing to build, pictures like THE LOVE BUG can be overlooked and thrown to the side for being too innocent. As a whole, we've become much more jaded and cynical and that's not really a good thing.
I like THE LOVE BUG because of those things and I wish filmmakers would make more pictures like it now and again. The world's a dark enough place already. It'd be nice to watch a light-hearted family comedy now and again that wasn't just escapist fare, but reminded us of the best things in life.
Film-buffs should see THE LOVE BUG for a variety of reasons. Besides being the #1 grossing film of 1969 the film is notable for its contribution to the film industry in special effects. THE LOVE BUG was created in an era were there was no such thing as CGI. All of the special effects in THE LOVE BUG were done the old fashioned way and it is amazing how well done they are. These effects might seem old and outdated by a child raised by computer-graphics, but in the era that the film was released the special effects are extraordinary.
THE LOVE BUG Special Edition is a great DVD to own, especially if you are fans of the film. There are two discs all total. On the first disc, in addition to the usual commentary (in this case with Dean Jones, Michelle Lee, and Buddy Hackett), there is a short Disney cartoon entitled "Susie--the Little Blue Coupe". This cartoon is a delight to watch and was in the inspiration for the characters in the Pixar film CARS.
The second disc is loaded with special features. There are several featurettes including "That Lovable Bug", "The Many Lives of Herbie", "Herbie Mania", and "Lost Treasures: Searching For Herbie". "That Lovable Bug" is my favorite of these featurettes. It's basically a documentary about the making of THE LOVE BUG, including interviews with Dean Jones, Michele Lee, and Buddy Hackett. "The Many Lives of Herbie" is a run-through of how Herbie changed throughout the various films he has been a part (excluded is HERBIE FULLY LOADED which was released after this DVD was made). "Herbie Mania" is basically a long interview with a couple of guys who own their own Herbie recreations, one that is complete with oil spills and doors that open automatically. "Lost Treasures: Searching For Herbie" is more or less a combination of information included in other special features that ends by showing where the first trick Herbie now resides. A couple other extras I enjoyed were a "Behind the Scenes" promo that had been culled together from archived footage and "Love Bug Day at Disneyland" which is archived footage of the Love Bug Day that was held at Disneyland in 1969; it must have been incredibly difficult to choose a winning entry from all the cars that were there that day. I also enjoyed "The Man Who Gave Herbie His Voice" which is a documentary tribute to Jimmy McDonald, the sound effect supervisor on THE LOVE BUG and countless other Disney films and shorts. Other extras include the 1969 Disney Studio Album, production gallery, deleted scenes that were never shot, the theatrical trailer, radio spots, two sound studio exercises, production stills, a comic book, biographies of the film's main actors and director, publicity documents, and an excerpt from the screenplay.
53 Is a Lovable Little Car.......2007-02-13
1968 was a great year for Dean Jones. He starred in "Blackbeard's Ghost," followed that up with "The Horse in the Gray Flannel Suit," and finished with a movie where he really shined, "The Love Bug." Perhaps no one told Mr. Jones that the real star of this movie was a Volkswagen Beetle.
Jim Douglas (Jones) is a race car driver. Unfortunately, he is a washed up race car driver who has a hard time recognizing that he is washed up. Jim's life changes when he wanders into a car showroom that caters to foreign luxury cars, just after seeing a pair of beautiful legs belonging to Carole Bennett (Michele Lee, who has been a fixture on television for decades, including a regular role on "Knott's Landing").
Jim wanders around the showroom looking at cars that he is unable to afford when a Beetle nuzzles his leg. Peter Thorndyke (David Tomlinson, perhaps best known as Mr. Banks in "Mary Poppins" and Mr. Emelius Browne in "Bedknobs and Broomsticks") is anxious to get rid of the little car and makes Jim a deal he is unable to refuse.
At first, it seems as though the little car is just one more in a series of disasters in Jim's life. However, Jim's friend Tennessee Steinmetz (Buddy Hackett, "The Music Man," "The Little Mermaid" and "The Little Mermaid II") quickly recognizes there is something special about the little car. Jim begins winning races with the little car, which Tennessee names after a relative. Unfortunately for Jim, some of the races he wins are against Peter Thorndyke, who decides he wants the car back.
The climax of the movie is a race through the mountains and deserts of the West as Herbie the Love Bug races his heart out trying to save Jim and himself.
Disney specializes in movies about lovable characters, and Disney hit gold with "The Love Bug." Disney's special effects team gave Herbie a lot of character. Herbie is like an intelligent and lovable dog with wheels and enough horsepower to pop wheelies. The choices of Buddy Hackett and of Michele Lee were brilliant because they were so natural in their roles. Even Dean Jones was a good pick for this movie.
The comedy in this movie ranges from subtle humor to outrageous slapstick. Most of the comedy works. This family movie is one of those rare movies that every member of the family will find amusing.
This edition of "The Love Bug" is the best edition available. The movie has been restored and is in wide screen. One of the extras is an audio commentary that includes the late Buddy Hackett. This DVD also has a second disk that includes a cornucopia of information about the lovable little car. This DVD is a requirement for fans of this movie.
Enjoy!
One of Disney's absolute best non-musical live actions.......2007-02-10
I am so glad the Disney studios took the time to diversify their resume apart from animation, cute cuddly creatures, and musicals. They were honestly on a roll there almost more so with Haley Mills and Annette Funiciello at the helm. Dean Jones was another Disney favorite, aside from his Ugly Dachsund days, with this comedy classic that struck gold for the Disney Studios. This movie moves like it was made from the concrete that helps move the lively volkswagon. (Thank God, it didn't talk). It didn't have to, the bug had absolute body language like one's most favorite pet. The storyline does not waste a moment, and begins to the very end, or should I say, the finishing line. Everything in this movie works, and the suttle scenes where the confused love bug takes a quick jolt by bouncing off of things, or gets drunk from being fed irish coffee, is not just added comedy, but is an actual part of the story. Good work for the Disney clan of movie inventors, and great to see these products available on DVD. The next generations have plenty to look forward to from Disney!
Herbie's back.......2007-01-12
My kids loved the new Herbie movie, so I thought we'd try some classic Herbie. They love this movie, even though the special effects are not quite what they're used to these days :-)

Most critics couldn't get behind Bill Murray's modern retelling of Charles Dickens's <I>A Christmas Carol</I>, finding it too unfocused at times and not nearly wicked enough. Still, if you're a Murray fan, you have to enjoy his deliciously nasty portrayal of the world's meanest TV executive, who has his cathartic moment one cold Christmas night in New York City. The various ghosts lead him on a ghost-town tour of Manhattan, with stops at holidays past, present, and future and a Kumbaya moment when Al Green and Annie Lennox sing "Put a Little Love in Your Heart." The effects are otherworldly, but one wishes the writing were as sharp as Murray's edgy portrayal. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>
