A baseball comedy and slob comedy rolled into one, this one actually works as entertainment, if not as a piece of cinematic mastery. James Gammon is the has-been manager hired to lead the last-place Cleveland Indians whose owner wants them to lose so she can sell them. But the team of has-beens and never-wases that he assembles (including Tom Berenger, Charlie Sheen, Corbin Bernsen, and Wesley Snipes) develops a sense of pride and turns the team around. There's plenty of rowdy humor about sex, race, and whatever else they can make fun of. Look for Rene Russo (in her first film role) as Berenger's romantic interest; Snipes also had his first showy role as Willie Mays Hayes, the team's base-stealing ace. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

5 out of 5 stars Best Sports Comedy Ever.......2007-06-09

This movie is a classic. They don't make good movies like this anymore. Great story line, great casting, and a happy ending. Baseball fan or not, you need to check this out. If you've already seen it, buy it anyway. I've seen it 100 times and could watch it 100 more.

5 out of 5 stars Top five.......2007-06-08

I'd place this comedy in the top five of good baseball movies (probably at #5). Everyone in it seems to be having fun, and that always helps the audience to have fun, too.

5 out of 5 stars Truly A Wonderful Film!! Highly Recommended........2007-06-09

If you've never read the book by Alexander Dumas, The Three Musketeers is a fabulous film that you will absolutely love. Several reviewers harp on the differences between the book and movie, but the very reason for creating a movie version is that it's SUPPOSED to be different. This one is excellently filmed, directed, and of particular note are all of the amazing actors! Personally, I've been in love with Oliver Platt, one of the most underrated actors of our time, for years, and this movie is an excellent showcase for his talents. But the star is most definately Tim Curry as Cardinal Richelieu, at his most evil best. I very highly recommend this movie to ALL ages, as it is appropriate to watch with your entire family.

1 out of 5 stars What WAS That?.......2007-06-08

I don't even know where to begin--the horrible acting, the terrible costuming, the obviously fake sets, the lack of continuity, or the cliched (and/or just plain stupid) lines? The "action and adventure" to which some have alluded is no more than a few people shooting each other or clashing swords while saying some really idiotic things; either that, or trying, and failing, to give the impression that they are truly courageous heroes. D'Artagnan looks and acts like a men's clothing model. The Musketeers are brainless wierdos. The king is a temper tantrum-throwing little kid. De Rochefort is obviously modifying his voice to make it more foreboding--but the fact that this is so obvious rather ruins the effect. And he looks like he should be in a gangster movie. Milady is definitely trying too hard. The red-haired doofus...I don't know where he came from. Well, that basically sums it up, folks.

4 out of 5 stars Forlicking Classic.......2007-05-15

Frolicking Classic; the classic story told in few words and comical scenes.
I love Oliver Platt who plays one of the Musketeers. All for one! and One
for all! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars A classic - Musketeers at their finest.......2007-05-07

The evil Cardinal plots to murder the young King, attempts to seduce the queen in her chambers, and plots with the English. The Three Musketeers rebel and refuse to surrender and uncover the Cardinal's plans. Perfect heros, damsils in distress, "Save the King" sword play. Great movie.

Michael Douglas won an Oscar for perfectly embodying the Reagan-era credo that "greed is good." As a Donald Trump-like Wall Street raider aptly named Gordon Gecko (for his reptilian ability to attack corporate targets and swallow them whole), Douglas found a role tailor-made to his skill in portraying heartless men who've sacrificed humanity to power. He's a slick, seductive role model for the young ambitious Wall Street broker played by Charlie Sheen, who falls into Gecko's sphere of influence and instantly succumbs to the allure of risky deals and generous payoffs. With such perks as a high-rise apartment and women who love men for their money, Charlie's like a worm on Gecko's hook, blind to the corporate maneuvering that puts him at odds with his own father (played by Sheen's offscreen father, Martin). With his usual lack of subtlety, writer-director Oliver Stone drew from the brokering experience of his own father to tell this Faustian tale for the "me" decade, but the movie's sledgehammer style is undeniably effective. A cautionary warning that Stone delivers on highly entertaining terms, <I>Wall Street</I> grabs your attention while questioning the corrupted values of a system that worships profit at the cost of one's soul. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Description

In this riveting, behind-the-scenes look at big business in the 1980's, an ambitious young broker (Charlie Sheen) is lured into the illegal, lucrative world of corporate espionage when he is seduced by the power, status and financial wizardry of Wall Street legend Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas). But he soon discovers that the pursuit of overnight riches comes at a price that's too high to pay.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVED YOU IN WALLSTREET!!.......2007-06-20

What a great line from Hot Shots 2!! This movie was great. Sheen gets thrown in the slammer, and Douglass acts like a big shot the whole movie. Ten piece suits and a lot of other stuff. Sheen probably became a garbage man like in the movie, "Men At Work" after being released from prison.

5 out of 5 stars Great!!.......2007-06-19

Flawless acting by Michael Douglass (Gordon Gecko), and Charlie Sheen (Bud Fox). Great Movie!

5 out of 5 stars The higher the building the higher the pile of ..........2007-06-05

The film avoids as much as possible the sentimental side of things and concentrates on the financial depth of the business. There is a slight touch of romanticism with the cover-girl, sorry home decorator. There is a little bit more feeling with the father, maybe because the father is playing the father and the son is playing the son, though it remains essentially business, in this case union business. Then there is nothing but buying and selling, owning and dumping, saving and killing, and the game is only pleasant if it is always both together. To kill one by saving another and to buy one in order to make the other sell and then buy him out. Even the police and justice are used that way. I expose you to the police to humiliate you and have you arrested, but then you trap me for the police with a tape-recorder and you will get a rap on the fingers from the judge while I will get to prison. When you know that that I was the one who wanted to kill a certain company that that you decided to save by having it bought by the sworn enemy of that I, you understand what inside business and inside dealing and inside embezzling and inside anything you want means. Just read or watch American Psycho, Unrated Version, and you will have the schizophrenic reading of the same situation. This film is maybe slightly too technical, but it is the way we are totally messed up in our lives by a bunch of psychopaths who have enough money to buy the federal government out of the federal reserve at Fort Knox, or vice versa, which might even be funnier. As Gekko said so simply: "You're not naive enough to think we are in a democracy. It's the free market." And we are the bait to catch the fish or the fish caught by the hook, or even maybe nothing but the hook itself to catch the shark.

5 out of 5 stars Oliver Stone's Best FIlm..........2007-02-27

Oliver Stone is one of my favorite "Hollywood" filmmakers, and I have enjoyed many of his movies over time. While I haven't seen a few of his works, he has given more than his share of fine cinema from his beginnings, and I count "Platoon," "Born on the Fourth of July," "JFK," and "Nixon" as among his better efforts, and I applaud and repeatedly watch parts of all of these. However, to me, Oliver Stone's "Wall Street" is, overall, his best.

For one thing, it avoids a lot of the overlength and filler in many of his other films, as well as his sometimes uncomfortable mixture of fact and fiction/speculation. "Wall Street" is pretty much a standard length and mainstream studio production, and while, as in almost all Stone films, it has a message to preach, in this one, he goes for a much lighter, more obscure, and subtle but just as powerful approach. And while this is fiction, and does not really deal with actual known historical or present-day people, the message here, both moral and profound, seems as timely these days as when the movie was first released in the 80's. That "morality" message posits that pursuit of profits and materialistic riches above any/most other considerations, especially above individual human integrity and decency, is an eventually losing proposition for any truly decent, thinking person, with true integrity.

Being a more "conventional" film, the "morality message" here may pass way over a lot of people's heads, especially those Oliver Stone haters who've never seen this and/or who are automatically turned off to any Oliver Stone effort, but the message remains Stone's most powerful, if obscure. And this is a must see, and Stone's overall best movie.

Charlie Sheen, (and to a lesser extent, his real life father and cinematic icon Martin Sheen, who amazingly enough plays the main character's real life father), as well as an outstanding performance by oscar-winning Michael Douglas, and other acting gems, as well as a fast-pace, little filler, linear plot and execution, add up to something really special.

The junior Sheen plays an up and coming and hoping, Wall Street, poor, "player" wannabe, who works as a going nowhere fast financial investments seller within the legal stock market system, whose main goal is to get close to one of the real players in the American financial market. After much effort, he finally and with dogged persistence, gets a short "meeting" with an all powerful, super-rich, almost legendary established player in the form of Michael Douglas.

Selling his soul early on, "Bud" (Charlie Sheen) soon begins to throw aside all of his roots and basic decent, moral upbringings, as well as the fate of his father and many decent working folks, in order to happily fall under the spell of his sociopathic leader/teacher (Gordon Gekko - Douglas), and enjoys enormous financial "success" within the philosophy of his indecent mentor. For awhile, the almost religious mantra of Gekko's "greed is good" more than succeeds, but for a short time only.

Before long, Sheen finds himself in a swank upper-east side Manhattan apartment, with money and the company of a beautiful, intelligent, but shallow girl (the best that can be bought), and sees a promising future as a true Wall Street player and wealthy corporate parasite. Trouble is, he loses his soul and moral fiber somewhere along the way, and realizes that for all his material gains, he has hurt the real people closest to him, and has betrayed them and his own self as well.

While Oliver Stone could've resolved and ended the film in a way he might've these days (strangely and sadly and even more so the same as it ever was concerning rich versus poor, haves versus have-nots, etc.), when corporate interests and money hunger rules over substance, he gives us instead a character who finally and deeply realizes the evil he has helped create, and does something about it.

If only the true humanitarian message and morals of this film could be realized and understood by our present day corporations, CEO's, power brokers, and by our indecent PTB and politician/law-makers (and the superficial and sensationalist-driven mainstream media and Hollywood elite), this world would be, I believe, a lot better one in which to live.

This is a film as topical as anything since, unfortunately, but the lessons have yet to be learned, and if anything, the PTB (powers that be) have only since gained more and more, at the expense of others less fortunate. For those viewing this as simply a pretty decent flick, without any heavy moral undertones, it is still Stone's most satisfying and easily understood filmic experience. In addition however, for those who read between the lines, and truly get the under-the-surface morality message here, it simply but powerfully renders upon the viewer a deep questioning of what "success" really is, and at what acceptable cost.

"Wall Street" was produced in the 80's, but its message and power, seem as true today as ever. Unlike so many other murky or over the top Oliver Stone films though, it remains, and probably will for some time, the definitive cinematic morality play from one of America's greatest filmmakers. Its message is clear, upon repeated viewings, and that is that reality is, we are all in this together, we sink and/or swim together, and harming others in the pursuit of selfish gain, is a moral philosophy doomed to spiritual and individual failure, in the end. No matter how great the temporary materialistic gains.

If you only see one Oliver Stone film in your life, let it be his best, in my view, this one. If its subtle but sublime morality message does not grab you at first, it probably will eventually, as you think about it more and more later on.

4 out of 5 stars Arguably Oliver Stone's best film.......2007-02-19

Wall Street is the story of young, naive stockbroker Bud Fox (Charlie Sheen) who is too impatient to go through the right channels to success and instead lets him impatience get him in trouble. Sick of cold calling, Bud Fox goes straight for the big fish... in this case, Gordon Gekko (Michael Douglas) an entrepreuneur who is often written about in Fortune magazine, aka the Bible. When Bud gets involved with Gordon, before he knows it he's losing all his inhibitions, caring nothing about the consequences of his actions, and is involved in an insider trading scam that threatens to ruin his family.

Wall Street is arguably Oliver Stone's best film, and has the solid acting, stellar film quality, and impressive use of light and sound to earn itself the title. It's even more relevant in the insider trading obsessed climate of the early 21st century, and I think its tale of backstabbing and betrayal will--sadly--always have a place in modern society. Charlie Sheen shines as a naive, impatient young buck who refuses to take the necessary time to achieve success on his own and instead is willing to cut any corners on the path to fame and fortune. Michael Douglas plays the villain perfectly, without remorse and with no qualms about who gets crushed in the process. For anyone who enjoys Oliver Stone films or impressive drama with a solid cast, I'd recommend Wall Street.

The Ronald Reagan 1980s were all about going back to the future--rewriting the past to better suit Reagan's upbeat vision of the present. So, Sylvester Stallone's John Rambo (a psychotic, shell-shocked Vietnam vet in the original film, transformed into a flag-waving hero in the sequel) was able to go back to Southeast Asia and "correct" history by decisively (and single-handedly) winning that messy ol' war on behalf of America. Red Dawn is a paranoid cold-war cautionary tale that presents us not with a rosy alternative past, but with an ominous vision of the future, metaphorically plopping a piece of Russian-occupied Afghanistan into America's back yard. In this celebration of the Second Amendment, storm troopers from the Evil Empire descend upon the inadequately defended United States and hold America hostage. Stealthily avoiding the invaders, a motley group of red-blooded, small-town, gun-toting teenagers go underground to form the Wolverines, a guerilla resistance squad dedicated to making those Russkies rue the day they parachuted onto U.S. soil. It's a darn good thing those kids had the right to keep and bear arms, huh! Written and directed by macho filmmaker John Milius, the self-described "Zen fascist" who also cowrote Apocalypse Now, as well as the horrifying shark story Robert Shaw tells in Jaws. The cast includes Patrick Swayze, C. Thomas Howell, Lea Thompson, Jennifer Grey (a few years before she and Swayze took up Dirty Dancing), Charlie Sheen, Powers Boothe, Harry Dean Stanton, and Ben Johnson. Red Dawn was a commercial success, although audiences invariably split into two camps, finding it either patriotic or appalling. Whatever your verdict, the film remains a telling reflection of its era. --Jim Emerson

Description

Red Dawn opens with one of the most shocking scenes ever filmed; on a peaceful morning, through the windows of a high school classroom, students see paratroopers land on the varsity football field: the invasion of the United States has begun! As their town is overrun by foreign nationals, eight teenagers escape to the mountains. Taking the name of their high school football team, the Wolverines, they wage unremitting guerrilla warfare in defense of their parents, their friends and their country. Powerful, chilling and absolutely gripping, this outstanding film features some of today's most popular stars, including Patrick Swayze (Ghost), Charlie Sheen (Platoon), C. Thomas Howell (The Hitcher), Lea Thompson ("Caroline in the City"), Jennifer Grey (Dirty Dancing) and veteran actor Harry Dean Stanton (Alien). When it comes to thrilling entertainment, Red Dawn wins the war with a vengeance!

4 out of 5 stars WOLVERINES !!.......2007-06-20

Though some people may think that this movie is far fetched because it depicts teenage men and women taking on a communist invasion, I believe that this is a very good movie.
If somehow something like this did happen I think that it is very likely that there would be civilian freedom fighters, look at past wars and invasions and this happens. If you were in this situation would you set back and let them win or would you take up arms and fight for your family, friends, country and freedom.
This movie brings about a very strong feeling of patriotism ( Something our country needs much more of) and is very good to watch around independence day.

4 out of 5 stars Red Dawn Revisited.......2007-05-21

The first time I saw this in the mid 80s I thought it was kind of cool, with great action, and a bit over the top. I never bought it because I just didn't think it was worth owning. Over the years as I have seen this on TV I realized this was worthy of a revisit to my initial opinion. As I have grown in age, I realized these young teens are thrown into a whole different world and their over-acting if you will, is quite honestly nothing more than I think a teen would do when stressed to this point. After all they lose their families and their world is turned upside down. What am I talking about, any adult would over-act as well in this kind of post holocaust situation. Basicly become distraught and over emotional.

So all things considered this movie deserves much more credit than it typically gets from critics. It is a good fictional story. The action and special effects are well done. I finally ordered a copy for my DVD library. Don't wait till you have seen it at least a half dozen times on TV like me. The commercials are to painful for that. You can even buy it with "Navy Seals" in a two pack for less than fifteen dollars. "Navy Seals" is a reasonably good movie as well and for about seven dollars and change each it is a good deal. Navy Seals has Charlie Sheen, Michael Biehn, Bill Paxton, Dennis Haysbert, and several other familiar faces. Good action movie that most people will enjoy. So grab a Big Gulp and a big bowl of popcorn and make an afternoon of it.

5 out of 5 stars Coming Soon..........2007-04-29

Special Edition DVD coming out on 7-17-07. Loved this movie when it came out in '84 when I was a kid, and still enjoy my yearly viewing of it.

1 out of 5 stars Oy Vey!.......2007-04-28

I thought about giving this film an intellectual review, but that would have been a complete waste of time. Watching this film could be compared to listening to a C.W. McCall album with a bad case of nausea or perhaps something scatological. Simply pathetic. The only redeeming role was performed by William Smith, who was the ONLY actor who seemed to exhibit talent, putting Sheen and Swayze to shame as acting professionals. This film would only have value for students who are seriously studying Russian and at that would be applicable to Chapter 22 with Smith's "I am a Hunter" speech. This film is a good example of how you can't win a game when only one person on the team shows up.

Platoon put writer-turned-director Oliver Stone on the Hollywood map; it is still his most acclaimed and effective film, probably because it is based on Stone's firsthand experience as an American soldier in Vietnam. Chris (Charlie Sheen) is an infantryman whose loyalty is tested by two superior officers: Sergeant Elias (Willem Dafoe), a former hippie humanist who really cares about his men (this was a few years before he played Jesus in Martin Scorsese's The Last Temptation of Christ), and Sergeant Barnes (Tom Berenger), a moody, macho soldier who may have gone over to the dark side. The personalities of the two sergeants correspond to their combat drugs of choice--pot for Elias and booze for Barnes. Stone has become known for his sledgehammer visual style, but in this film it seems perfectly appropriate. His violent and disorienting images have a terrifying immediacy, a you-are-there quality that gives you a sense of how things may have felt to an infantryman in the jungles of Vietnam. Platoon won Oscars for best picture and director. --Jim Emerson

Description

Winner* of 4 Academy AwardsÂ(r), including Best Picture, and based on the first-hand experience of OscarÂ(r)-winning** director Oliver Stone, Platoon is powerful, intense and starkly brutal. "Harrowingly realistic and completely convincing" (Leonard Maltin), it is "a dark, unforgettable memorial" (The Washington Post) to every soldier whose innocence was lost in the war-torn jungles of Vietnam. Chris Taylor (Charlie Sheen) is a young, naive American who, upon his arrival in Vietnam, quickly discovers that he must do battle not only with the Viet Cong, but also with the gnawing fear, physical exhaustion and intense anger growing within him. While his two commanding officers (OscarÂ(r)-nominated*** Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe) draw a fine line between the war they wage against the enemy and the one they fight with each other, the conflict, chaos and hatred permeate Taylor, suffocating his realities and numbing his feelings to man's highest value life.

1 out of 5 stars A Movie That Anti-War Media Loved!.......2007-06-04

First off, this film is fiction and what happened in the movie is not totally square with the facts of this war nor does it protray Vietnam veterans as they really were. It is a liberal attempt to justify their anti-war stance and to show America and the world that all of us Vietnam veterans were out murdering people and burning villages. The plot of this movie does not fly - and yet so may people think this is one of the best war films ever made. It shows what people think of that war and what they wish to keep believing about the men who fought it.

This film helps feed the media's image of crazzy veterans. I was offended by the movie but even more so by the huge reception it has gotten as a "realistic movie" about the war. They could have filmed this at Berkeley and cast the actors from the Cal student body.

I know it is just a movie but it serves no veteran - and is not healing for this nation. It is a popular film no doubt about it - and the acting is done well. The action is realistic in the battle scenes - but it is plot and the message of the film that gets in the way of me viewing this as nothing more than left leaning trash and another attempt to make us veterans look bad.

I served my tour of duty in Nam from October 1966- October 1967 - I was wounded and saw my fair share of combat as a crew-chief door-gunner on a Huey. I have been helping my fellow veterans now for 3 decades trying to adjust from that war and our poor welcome back home - this film hurts that effort and is an insult!

Do us all a favor and do not buy this film and enrich those who made this propaganda. Reach out and help those veterans coming home from this war on terrorism - they are in need of your support! Let us not do to them what this country did to us Nam veterans!

If you agree with this review let me and others know! I know that others must feel as I do.

5 out of 5 stars POLITICS IN JUNGLE BOOTS - A VIETNAM WAR DEPICTION THROUGH MOVIES.......2007-06-01

BY: Fernando de Mello Pimentel

The world we see today, thrusted by a globalized set of integrated political and commercial trading practices, is arguably very dissimilar from the bi-polarized and ideologically lugubrious background of the 20th Century's post World War II years, also known as the "Cold War". At a time when an imaginary line divided the globe in two geopolitical blocks -the capitalist and socialist -, the United States and the former U.S.S.R where the two major players at the chessboard in charge of the strategy for the rest of the World's fate. Both sides designated what was known at the time as their "Spheres of Influence", which in practical terms meant that strategic alliances with other ideologically close countries were drawn with the sole purpose of achieving world-wide domination. Such concept was clearly materialized with the construction of the Berlin Wall (1961-1989), also known as "Iron Curtain", which literarally divided the world into zones of capitalist and communist ideologies.

America's role at the time was to secure the deployment of capitalist economical aid, political influence and military support to other areas of the world in detriment of Soviet communist regime expansion, and vice-versa. The Cuban Missile Crisis (1962), the wars of Korea (1950-1953), Vietnam (1959-1975) and the Soviet-Afghan (1979-1989) and the constant and widespread fear of nuclear annihilation - at the verge of a massive arms race - were all under the spotlight of world foreign affair policies promoted by both parties. The Vietnam War was perhaps one of the most intriguing outcomes of this conflicted era. It has been increasingly depicted in countless hollywood productions and television series ever since the mid 70's.

Debuting in 1978, in this sphere of cinematographic story telling, is Michael Cimino's epic "The Deer Hunter", which describes the friendship of 3 Pennsylvania steel workers of Rusyn ancestry. As strong and realistic as this tale is, perhaps no other film is as psychological and nerve-wrecking as Francis Ford Coppola's "Apocalypse Now", with its intense narrative about an american special forces elite soldier having gone totally insane in the jungles of south asia and having decided to take matters by his own hands and methods. This 1979 motion picture has stirred up audiences around the globe by portraying the horrors of war and its tormenting effects on both civilians and military personnel. Embracing all of this chaotic nature is the fictional Nung River, which metaphorically stands for Colonel Kurtz's gradual but irreversible psychological navigation towards a derranging stream of consciousness which undeniably led him to cross over to the dark side of mental sanity.

While "The Deer Hunter" was a film about friendship ties dilacerated by mental breakdown caused by imprisonment in Vietnamese P.O.W camps and the unbearable hardships of coming home, and "Apocalypse Now" was a harshly psychological metaphor for military desertion and misconduction of War, Oliver Stone's 1986 auto-biographical "Platoon" is the definite account on the sheer loss of innocence every young enlisted man underwent during his tour of duty. In the movie, Stone explores the 25th Infantry Division's Bravo Company Platoon as a microcosm which emblematizes the Pentagon's controversial and misleading military policy to restrain communist expansion in southeast asia.

Political and ideological clashes erupt between the outfit's two main leaders - Staff Sergeant Barnes and Sergeant Elias - triggering a polarizing conflict within the platoon which precipitates the decay of morale. The inoperative Lieutenant Wolfe is incapable of controlling the ongoing joust within his group. His total lack of authority over the platoon is accurately portrayed throughout the movie and is somehow Stone's testimony on America's incompetence in directing the war.

Politics is a recurring theme in "Platoon" which uncompromisingly displays the military's unquenchable thirst for power. While Sergeant Barnes is the personification of the ambitious quest for unlimited power, Sergeant O'Neil represents a submissive class of `boot-licking" scoundrels who will give unconditional support to their superior officers in exchange of personal benefits. On the extreme opposite end lies Sergeant Elias, a hippie humanist who cares for his fellow men as if they were his own blood. Elias is an authentic crusader who has been in country long enough - at least three complete tours - to become completely acquainted to the devastating sub-products of war and thus form a solid contrary opinion about it - traces of pacifism can actually be inferred by his non-violent behaviour and clear pursuit of escapism. His natural leadership skills spontaneously blossom as he constantly finds himself supporting and coaching rookies who have just been freshly shipped into the combat zone. On the other hand, Sergeant Barnes gains similar respect from his men by casting terror among both foes and friendlies - which pretty much builds his reputation on being feared. Although morally distinct in character, both leaders are equally sharp on combat skills and military tactics.

In addition to the testimonial nature of the film, "Platoon" is also renowned for its scenes of graphic and verbal violence which have been warmly captured by Stone while in duty. "Platoon" is arguably one of the most authentic and visceral movies to depict the tragedies and misfortunes of an entire generation of Americans living during the cold-war era. It also realistically depicts the crude "Politics in Jungle Boots" of a nation struggling to find its role in a Post-World War II nazi-fascist free world.

***** - A CINEMATOGRAPHIC MASTERPIECE!!!

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Vietnam movie of all time!.......2007-05-26

I'm a huge fan of war movies, especially vietnam era ones. Probably because I've been in war and I like to see it depicted on film. This movie does a wonderful job of showing what the vietnam war was like through one particular army platoon. Now I read several reviews that discredited this movie becuase it didn't depict the various men serving in vietnam in a good military manner and I will say that Stone does highlight the drugs and insubordination alot but that stuff did go, a good bit from what I've read and heard from vets. lets face it, people want to see action and drama, not boring robot, do what your told all the time, every time. No matter what people might say, I still think this is an awesome movie and a must see for ANYONE.

5 out of 5 stars The Nightmare of War.......2007-05-24

I have watched Platoon more than any other war movie. So much so that I've had to give it a rest over the last few years.
Why is it so good?
Perhaps because it is the most realistic (certainly Vietnam) war movie ever made. Its based on Oliver Stones own experiences in Vietnam. Now I doubt whether there were actually two so clearly good and bad characters, as represented by Willem Dafoe and Tom Beringer in the film, but it is the spark between these two that creates much of the films atmosphere.
There are quite a few scenes in this film, such as when the Charlie Sheen character wakes up in the middle of the night (in the jungle), that are wonderfully done. You really get an idea of just how scary being a soldier might be.
I'm also sure that the film would not not have been as successful as it was, without its marvellous soundtrack. Most noteably Samuel Barbers 'Adagio for Strings'. This piece of music alone adds an extra dimension to the scenes it is used in. A very haunting and sad piece of music.
The ending of the film is perhaps the only weak point, but it is a minor quibble about a very powerful and moving film.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST WAR PICTURES EVER MADE!.......2007-05-13

This film has been copied so many times, but never duplicated. I have never been to war, so I do not know if it is a realistic view of it. It is still a great film that leaves you thinking in silence as the credits role.

5 out of 5 stars Major League 2.......2007-06-03

It was a pretty good movie and I enjoyed seeing it again, but why were they playing in Baltimore's Camden Yards? Cleveland Municipal was still open, but Jacobs' Field wasn't opened until 1994.

4 out of 5 stars Major League 2.......2006-07-18

Ok. As this movie follows on from the first Major League movie, expect laughs and a couple of new faces. It continues with the same players who end up coming back to play for another season. The "Wild Thing" has gone commercial, is always looking at selling something, you have Roger Dorn who now owns the team and is slowly going bankrupt. The team morale is down and they end up on a losing streak and then the witch comes back and buys the team back again. Watch for the part with the japanese warrior and pedro exchanging the phrase of "losing your marbles". Great movie for those who are interested in a quick laugh while enjoying watching baseball.

5 out of 5 stars The Indians Are Back!.......2006-01-15

The boys from Cleveland are back to prove that last year's team was no fluke in this great sequel film. After winning their divison, the Indians were defeated by the Chicago White Sox in the ALCS. After losing, team owner Rachel Phelps (Margaret Whitton) sold the team to former third baseman Roger Dorn (Corbin Bernsen). Roger then brought in high-priced free agent catcher Jack Parkman (David Keith) to bolster the Indians line up. However, incumbent catcher Jake Taylor (Tom Berenger) is still on the team, along with another catching prospect, Rube Baker (Eric Brushotter). Pedro Cerrano (Dennis Haysbert), Willie Mays Hayes (Omar Epps), and Rick "Wild Thing" Vaughn (Charlie Sheen) also return from last year's team, along with manager Lou Brown (James Gammon).

Hayes starred in his own action movie in the off-season, and also tried turning into a power hitter, much to the chagrin of manager Brown. Cerrano discovered Buddhism, and now treats everybody as a friend, even the opposing players during a game. Jake's knees finally got the best of him, but Lou asks him to stay on as a coach. Roger soon finds out that he's in way over his head. He overpaid Rachel for the team, and now he has only enough money left for two months of operations. His first move is to trade Parkman to the hated White Sox for outfielder Isuro Tanaka (Takashi Ishibashi). Tanaka immediately challenges Cerrano, saying he has "no marbles". Roger's second move is to re-sell the team back to Rachel, much to the horror of everyone else! Rick Vaughn has shed his "Wild Thing" image. He and his agent/girlfriend Rebecca Flannery (Alison Doody) have concentrated on getting commercial advertisements and endorsement opportunities. Meanwhile, Rick has lost a lot of the zip off of his once-blazing fastball, and he's now getting hit hard by opposing teams.

Their season starts out rather slowly, just like the previous year, and to make matters worse, Lou Brown suffers a heart attack and is forced to step down as manager. Jake is given the job as manager in Lou's absence, and it falls on his shoulders to mold the team back into winners. Will Jake be able to get the team back on track. Will Rick, Willie, and Pedro re-discover their lost talents?

Many times, sequels fail to live up to the success of the original film, but that is not the case with this excellent movie. Major League 2 is every bit as good as the original. Having everyone except Wesley Snipes back from the first movie helped to make this movie so much fun to watch, and Omar Epps does a fantastic job taking over for Snipes as Willie Mays Hayes. Newcomers David Keith (Parkman), Takashi Ishibashi (Tanaka), and Eric Brushotter (Baker) add new flavor with their new characters, and Bob Uecker returns as the zany Indians announcer Harry Doyle.

I give this movie my highest recommendation. Baseball fans will surely enjoy watching the Indians in their chase to win the World Series.

2 out of 5 stars Not up to the standards of the original.......2005-12-21

While the original film was great and is one of my all-time favcorites, this sequel in no way comes up to the same standards of humor or storyline. In fact, it comes off as a blatant attempt to squeeze a few more dollars off of the original films followers. You don't need to believe me. Try renting it before you put down hard-earned cash on this wannabe...

3 out of 5 stars good to the last drop.......2005-08-31

Eliot Asinof's detailed book <I>Eight Men Out</I> illustrates how the system of American sports collapsed in 1919, the year the Chicago White Sox threw the World Series. Filmmaker John Sayles worked on his script years before the 1988 film (or before he had the rights to make the film) as a labor of love. Sayles's adaptation proves one can make a historically accurate film in the day and age of artistic license. And what a story. Although many know about the "Black Sox," made famous--again--in the 1989 hit film <I>Field of Dreams</I>, the details of the saga are far less known. The center of <I>Dreams</I>, Shoeless Joe Jackson (portrayed correctly by D.B. Sweeney as illiterate and left-handed in <I>Eight</I>), is not the core of this film; it's ace pitcher Eddie Cicotte (Sayles favorite David Strathairn), who took the money, and third baseman Buck Weaver (John Cusack), who did not. The film fits nicely into Sayles's (<I>Lone Star</I>) strong suit: the ensemble drama. We are introduced to bickering owners, famous crooks, high-minded judges, lowlife gangsters, investigative reporters (played by Studs Terkel and Sayles himself), and, most of all, players who are at the breaking point when it comes to low salaries and degrading rewards. While some may feel the film is not as visceral as it should be, there is a great amount of verisimilitude when watching finely tuned athletes telling their bodies to play poorly--heartbreak on the nation's diamond. Beautifully detailed (like Sayles's previous labor-drama, <I>Matewan</I>), <I>Eight Men Out</I> gives us powerful lessons in which everyone lost: players, gamblers, and especially the fans who love the game. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

Description

John Cusack (Con Air) and Charlie Sheen (Major League) lead a "superb ensemble of actors" (Newsweek) delivering "striking performances" (The New York Times) in this "mesmerizing story" (Los Angeles Times) about the infamous 1919 Chicago White Sox scandal, certainly one of the saddest chapters in the annals of professional sports. Buck Weaver (Cusack) and Hap Felsch (Sheen) are young idealistic players with the Chicago White Sox, a pennant-winning team owned by Charles Comiskey Â- a penny-pinching, hands-on manager who underpays his players and treats them with disdain. And when gamblers and hustlers discover that Comiskey's demoralized players are ripe for a money-making scheme, one by one the team members agree to throw the World Series. But when the White Sox are defeated, a couple of sports writers smell a fix and a national scandal explodes, ripping the cover off America's favorite pastime.

The Black Sox were a great team. i doubt Joe Jackson and Bucky Weaver threw the seris. They may have been guility by asociation, but no player was found guilty in court.Eight Men out made me mad and a little down, if they did it who else did? This is a good movie if you get a sick feeling from it youre not alone. Great job by this cast.

To the best of my knowledge, nobody but Aaron Sorkin has ever put plausible words in the mouths of magnates and robber barons to explain their unreasonable obsession with the profit motive.

Having said that, I'd like to add that there really IS more gut-clenching baseball in this film than in all of the others I've lately begun collecting. And the baseball MATTERS to Anybody because the central characters are exquisitely drawn and beautifully realized by a truly wonderful cast of exceptionally fine actors...except Komisky, who Clifton James makes perfectly contemptible.
On the other hand, Bill Irwin actually speaks! That fact all by its lonesome justifies the expenditure. And it's a GREAT motion picture.

5 out of 5 stars One of best baseball movies ever.......2006-11-01

Without a doubt, this stands as one of the great baseball movies. Unlike "The Natural" or "Field of Dreams", this is a true story- that of the 1919 Chicago White Sox and their plot to throw the World Series spurred on by the miserly ways of their owner Charlie Commiskey. The movie brings to life early 20th century baseball and all of the many actors are very good in their parts. Bringing to life people, events, and an era almost a century old are not easy but it is very well done here.
I think the movie will appeal to non baseball fans also as the film is more concerned with the drama of the characters rather than the "X"s and "O"s of baseball.

4 out of 5 stars And they are out in Eight Men Out .......2005-12-30

In the early 1920's, the baseball world was shocked by a scandel, when 8 players of the 1919 Chicago White Sox team was accussed of throwing the world series. The players were Eddie Cicotte (David Strathairn), Buck Weaver (John Cusack), "Shoeless" Joe Jackson (D.B. Sweeney), Fred McMullin (Perry Lang) , Lefty Williams (James Read), Chick Gandil (Michael Rooker) , Hap Felsch (Charlie Sheen), and Ray Schalk (Gordon Clapp). These 8 players I am sure you all know of, was suspended from playing baseball in the Major Leagues for life for thier part in the crime, even if the jury had aquitted them. The movei starts before the World Series happens, and before we get into see a deal, or talk between players and gamblers, but mor names get added on in the deal, and they are each paid a certain amount of money each for each game in the World Series. The White Sox was considered in this season team in baseball, and was favorly favored to win the World Series, but in yet these players took thier turn in games, while they team met the Cinncianti Red Stockings, and look who turns out to win the World Series, whcih should make it easy to review this movie, and even if you know of the scandal that took place and broke the hearts of kids in America, and even the Chicago White Sox fans, the movie runs about 2 hours long, which even takes some time, before we get to see the World Series games, the trail bacially happened in 1921, even if it is seen in ths movie between 1919 and 1920, but White Sox and history buiffs should enjoy this movie.

5 out of 5 stars Eight Men Out.......2005-09-29

The film is fantastic for all baseball lovers, history lovers, and anyone who wishes to escape for a few hours. No baseball fan should miss this one.

Part of what was touted as a late-1980s revival of Westerns (and you can see how long that lasted), this good-looking, empty-brained film was like a spurs-and-chaps version of a Joel Schumacher movie, filled with pretty faces, prettier imagery, and absolutely no new ideas. The idiotically grinning Emilio Estevez is cast as Billy the Kid, who slowly accumulates a gang of Brat Pack buddies (Lou Diamond Phillips, Kiefer Sutherland, Dermot Mulroney) and fashions them into a group of male models with six-guns. The action is confused and the script is trite, though Terence Stamp is intriguing as the old reprobate who helps the gang get its act together. Followed by an even worse sequel. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

4 out of 5 stars "By The Way, You're Under Arrest" ~ Do The Good Guys Always Wear Badges?.......2007-06-14

The '88 mini-classic 'Young Guns' is a rowdy, shoot em up, good old time starring some of Hollywood's favorite young actors at the time of its release. Emilio Estevez delivers probably his best role to date as the hot-headed, amoral Billy the Kid. He is joined by a gang of sharp-shooters and knife throwers played by such notables as; Keifer Sutherland, Lou Diamond Phillips, Charlie Sheen and Dermont Mulroney. Add to the mix Terrance Stamp and the beloved bad guy Jack Palance and you've got yourself a western you can enjoy over and over again. So pull up your boots, strap on your six-shooter and find your hat. As far a badges go, who needs a stinking badge.

A surprisingly engaging story of puppy love and friendship in a teen setting, this film focuses on the title character (Corey Haim), who is nerdy but winningly outgoing. He falls madly for a new girl in town (Kerri Green); since school is out for the summer, he becomes her only friend--until she meets his hunky pal (Charlie Sheen). Meanwhile, Lucas ignores the romantic yearnings of another female pal (Winona Ryder, in her screen debut). Written and directed by David Seltzer, this one is a charmer with substance, featuring strong, open performances by its young cast. It's also fascinating to watch today, more than a decade later, and consider what became of these performers: while Ryder grew to be one of Hollywood's brightest lights, Haim descended into substance abuse, as did Sheen, whose predilection for call girls also made him a talk-show punch line. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

Description

At 14 years old, Lukas is a bit too small for his age, and far too smart for his high school classmates. He's more interested in symphonies and science fairs than food fights and football. But when Lucas finds himself falling in love with a cheerleader, who only has eyes for the school's top jock, he grows desperate for her attention, Even if it means risking his pride and his neck at the big game.

5 out of 5 stars "LUCAS" IS CLASSIC, CHARMING, POIGNANT TRIP BACK TO MID-1980'S TEEN CINEMA.......2007-06-06

Long before he was forced by obscurity and/or poverty to try selling his teeth on the Internet for cash, Corey Haim had a brief heydey in mid-1980's films.
(SEE HAIM ALSO IN "SILVER BULLET" AND "THE LOST BOYS.")
This charming film from writer/director David Seltzer is the best. I was delighted to find this on DVD at Amazon, com, and equally delighted to find, after all these years, that the movie retains all of its charm.

Haim plays Lucas, a scrawny geek who doesn't fit in anywhere. He covers his pain by being goofy and outspoken. We know little of his home life. We hear his dad is "alcoholic" and nobody knows where his mother is.
Lucas is smart and sensitive. Lucas loves insects and classical music. He soon falls in love with Maggie (Kerri Green) the new girl in town. The two begin a touching friendship, but things change a bit once school starts. Maggie cares for Lucas, but falls for sensitive/sexy football player Cap (Charlie Sheen). Meanwhile, Lucas never notices that Rena (Winona Ryder in her film debut) has a crush on him. Instead, he joins the football team in order to prove his "prowess" and attractiveness to females. Lucas nearly gets himself killed, but he gains the respect of the entire school.
There is one unfortunate moment in a football team locker room/shower scene where a negative te
