Description

One of the most influential, radical science-fiction films ever made and a mind-bending free-form travelogue, La jetée (The Jetty) and Sans soleil (Sunless) couldn't seem more different—yet they're the twin pillars of one of the most daring and uncompromising careers in cinema history. Chris Marker, filmmaker, poet, novelist, photographer, editor, and now videographer and digital multimedia artist, has been challenging moviegoers, philosophers, and himself for years with his complex queries about time, memory, and the rapid advancement of life on this planet. These two films—a tale of time travel told in still images and a journey to Africa and Japan—remain his best-loved and most widely seen.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Stunning.......2007-05-26

Sans Soleil has long been one of my favourite films. Superlatives barely begin to scratch the surface, but it is surreal, haunting, poignant, ethereal and unlike any other 'documentary' you have seen or are ever likely too. The film is ultimately about the heartbreaking beauty of the time and place in which we (do or do not) exist. Featuring Marker's central preoccupations of time, space and memory, Sans Soleil needs to be seen to be believed.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most moving, esoteric, and unique science fiction films ever made..........2007-05-12

I am very happy that Chris Marker's La Jette (and Sans Soleil) are on DVD. La Jetee is a wonderful, incredibly haunting film. It can easily be classified as one of the greatest science fiction films ever made in my opinion. It only runs 40 minutes, and is composed of nothing but still images and narration (except for one shot), yet the universe is contained within it. It's that rare cerebral science fiction that hardly gets made these days, along the lines of 2001, Blade Runner, and Solaris (Tarkovsky's version). It was the inspiration for Twelve Monkeys, and while Monkeys is a great film in itself, La Jetee is much more haunting and moving. It's wonderful to be able to see La Jetee in a proper transfer.

5 out of 5 stars Way overdue.......2007-05-09

Simply stated, this disc features two of the greatest films of the 20th Century. La Jetee is often called a "science fiction" film while Sans Soleil is labeled as a "documentary", however both films defy these simple descriptions. While very different in form, both La Jetee and Sans Soleil will challenge your ideas of memory and time and spacial relationships. These films are absolutely critical viewing for discerning film fans. Kudos to Criterion for finally bringing these films to the U.S. I only wish that other films such as "La Mystere Koumiko" by Marker will follow.

[...]This film has believable action compared to the last few Bond films before Casino Royale and has some great set pieces, this is what action films should be like, great acting from Matt Damon and supporting cast, I even love the music as well and cant wait for this to come out on HD DVD as the 2nd film looks awesome on it. 2 out of 5 stars The only things preserved are a few names.......2007-06-04

As far as a shoot-um-up with the obligatory car chase goes, this movie did it quite well. And like many of the other "1984" (book by George Orwell in which to satisfy the proletariat they had a machine mass produce formula pulp fiction) type machine churned out films for the proletariat, the title and a few names bare the only resemblance to the Ludlum story. Quite a few of the characters that give this story depth and mystery are left out of the movie completely.

Fortunately or unfortunately it is easy to get wrapped unpin technology as assume that high definition (HD) or even 3Dis going to take the place of Carlos and the search for his real identity.

Now let's not compare this quickie in shoot-up land with the well thought out book "The Bourne Identity" by Robert Ludlum or the much better portrait of the story portrayed in the Mini-Series "The Bourne Identity" (1988) starring Richard Chamberlain and Jaclyn Smith; then we can enjoy what is left.

A sailor on a fishing trawler spots a human body in the water. After retrieving it we find it is alive. Helping this stranger back from the near dead we find a couple of bullet holes and a mysterious capsule under his skin. The capsule displays what the fisherman recognizes immediately as a Swiss bank account. The man can not remember who he is. Now we follow along with his journey to Switzerland and find out if he will recover. In the mean time someone is out to kill him. Why?

Based on the book by Lt. Col. Harold Moore (ret.) and journalist Joseph Galloway, <I>We Were Soldiers</I> offers a dignified reminder that the Vietnam War yielded its own crop of American heroes. Departing from Hollywood's typically cynical treatment of the war, writer-director Randall Wallace focuses on the first engagement of American soldiers with the North Vietnamese enemy in November 1965. Moore (played with colorful nuance by Mel Gibson) and nearly 400 inexperienced troopers from the U.S. Air Cavalry were surrounded by 2,000 North Vietnamese Army soldiers, and the film re-creates this brutal firefight with graphic authenticity, while telling the parallel story of grieving army wives back home. While UPI reporter Galloway (Barry Pepper) risks his life to chronicle the battle, Wallace offers a balanced (though somewhat fictionalized) perspective while eliciting laudable performances from an excellent cast. Like the best World War II dramas of the 1940s, <I>We Were Soldiers</I> pays tribute to brave men while avoiding the pitfalls of propaganda. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

4 out of 5 stars A good movie........2007-06-23

THis movie tells of the men who fough and died in the Vietnam Nam War.

2 out of 5 stars Oh please.......2007-06-18

Super American Mel has actually tarnished reality. He superbly recreates what transpired for the first 2/3rd of the movie. But that unbelievably embarrassing charge that hill ending is so far from the truth that it removes any redeemingvalue from this movie--read the book--see what happens the next day as the "relief" force marches back to camp.

I guess Mel thought that the follow up battle, which was even worse than X-Ray, never happened much like he and his father feel the holocaust never happened.

I know some reviewers have said how they got it right and that is true for the grunts, but what does the movie's John wayne message say to those who died at Albany onboth sides?

5 out of 5 stars More than a just a movie, its an experience you live through.......2007-06-17

As many of the previous reviewers mentioned, the reality of this movie made it more than just a movie in itself. Being the most accurate and realistic Vietnam movie Hollywood has ever produced, it has turned into a invaluable tool for Husbands, Sons and Fathers to be able to truly show their families just how horrific being in a combat situation was for them. It can really open the eyes of some people that couldn't understand why Vets are still strugling to deal with the after-effects the war had on them mentally. This is just my experience as a 34 year old father and husband and how it effected me watching this movie with my father.

I was not in the Vietnam war, but my father flew the Huey right through the thick of the battles, exactly as it shows in the movie. He has also been a Bell Helicopter employee all his life.

I watched this movie with him when it came out on DVD, I saw it in the theatre and finally convinced him to come over and watch it with me when it came out on DVD. See, my dad is not a big movie fan, he has a ranch here in Texas and isn't much impressed with all the Hollywood flair and glorification they used in the other movies. I could tell this was different when about 1/3 of the way through I looked over and he was intently watching the movie and had not said one word. When it was over, he simply said "Wow, I never thought a movie would hit so close to home, that was pretty darn close to real".

That's when a movie became more than "just" a movie. We watched it again, but this time he told me stories I have never heard about his tour, details of how Mom and him lived on base like that, things I never knew but am very thankful that the movie brought back memories he had forgotten and I heard a part of his life I had only speculated about.

It was great listening to him point out parts of the movie and explaining how accurate a certain part was and how that's just how it was like on another part. There were some really incredible events that he lived through over there, I mean amazing stories I would have never known about. I never even knew he had been that involved in the action, he never really would go into detail, but this movie have him a picture to use to help me visualize the fear and horror that he and the other front line soldiers had to endure.

This movie still had some Hollywood flair to it, but when a movie can create that kind of impact on someone, and create an unforgetable evening spent with my father learning about his past, it is worth 5 + stars to me. We watched it 3 times since then, and those moments spent with my father are forever going to be remembered by myself.

Amazing movie, one of the best ever put on film, period.

5 out of 5 stars A TRUE Story and an Excellent Historical War Movie! .......2007-06-11

WE WERE SOLDIERS is a great war movie that has tense battlefield action as well as tear-jerking moments over the families left behind.

The DVD cover should have described this film as the TRUE STORY that it is! That is what makes this movie interesting, it is the TRUE STORY of the first official battle between US troops and North Vietnam Army troops!

This is soldier against soldier, both sides wearing their distinctive helmets and uniforms. This is not the typical Hollywood version of evil US troops fighting civilians and the enemy disguised as civilians, (which, come to think of it, is the very problem that we now have with the War on Terror, that the terrorists often disguise themselves as civilians).

Sometimes the writing in WE WERE SOLDIERS seems a little corny, cheesy, or melodramatic, but if you listen to the informative Director's Commentary, he explains that most of those moments are directly from the real life book, WE WERE SOLDIERS ONCE... AND YOUNG, by the real life main character, played in the film by Mel Gibson.

The movie has a lot of very nice, family moments, and there is plenty to like in that the characters all honor traditional family values and wanting to keep the family together -- but which soldiers will come home again?

The Bonus Features add about 40 minutes of interesting documentary and Making Of material, and often it is surprising how similar the final movie version looks compared to the old footage of the characters and places in the story! Many characters seem to be just generic, made up characters, until you watch the Making Of footage and see that most of them are named and based on real life soldiers, and often they even seem to look like the real life people did, too!

There is about 20 minutes of Deleted Scenes, which are all good, too. Most of these should have been kept in the film, in my opinion, because they add a lot of good character development.

Like most Mel Gibson movies, WE WERE SOLDIERS can get a little graphically violent, but I don't mind as long as they are portraying historical violence in a realistic way. The films that Mel Gibson directs are more intense, as well as historical, like APOCALYPTO, and Mel Gibson's best film, THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, but WE WERE SOLDIERS is still very good. Mel Gibson's Apocalypto (Widescreen Edition) The Passion of the Christ (Definitive Edition)

The film makers did an excellent job of staying true to the material, and this is a very interesting, entertaining, tense, and heartfelt film!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent example of an air mobile assault.......2007-06-07

We Were Soldiers is about a Lieutenant Colonel Harold Moore(played by Mel Gibson), commanding officer of one of the infantry battalions, the 1st of the 7th, of the 1st Calvary Division, during a fight in the Fall of 1965,since the book was written by Colonel Moore, now Lieutenant General (retired). Colonel Moore comes off looking pretty good. Maybe he was, maybe that's why he made Lieutenant General.

All I can say is Hollywood sure loves napalm (it isn't anywhere near as effective as shown in the movie; the Air Force must have paid to have the movie made. All I can say is that I never had a Phantom stay on station longer than ten minutes and you had to cease firing all artillery and mortars before they'd come in. All for one or two 500 pound bombs. Just not worth it.

Artillery on the other hand could crank out 60 105mm rounds per minute sustained fire with a battery of six howitzers. . That's with just with the direct support 105mm howitzers in direct support of the infantry battalion, not counting any 155mm or eight inchers.

This movie is primarily about the Battle of the Ia Drang Valley. As far as I could tell it was fairly realistic, except that:

I never saw the first tracer round fired and no one showed an illumination fire mission. Useful when you're fighting at night. They did show the infantry firing their 81mm mortars and their four deuces. I used these primarily for illumination fire mission, of course I was in Viet Nam somewhat later, in 1969 and 1970, and had some twenty batteries of artillery that could shoot for me.

As an artillery officer I'm appalled at how poorly they used their artillery fire support. I would have relieved my forward observer if that had been mine. Maybe artillery needs to hire a better PR firm.

All-in-all an entertaining movie.

The movie is rated R for a reason. A lot of blood and guts.

Manic energy and an agreeable level of comic insanity turn Just Friends into the kind of brainless comedy you can enjoy as a modest guilty pleasure. If you liked director Roger Kumble's previous comedy The Sweetest Thing (and let's face it, that movie had some really funny moments), chances are you'll get at least a few solid belly-laughs from this not-so-high-concept premise, in which a formerly fat high-schooler named Chris (Ryan Reynolds) is transformed, ten years later, into a womanizing music executive with a high-profile client (Anna Faris) in the Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera mold. As it zips along with some broad-stroked slapstick and snappy one-liners, the screenplay by Adam Tex Davis contrives to reunite Chris with Jamie (Amy Smart), the former cheerleader who was the great, unrequited love of Chris' miserable high-school life. By his narcissistic logic, he'll seduce her by treating her badly (i.e. she'll want what she thinks she can't have), but he gets unexpected competition in the form of a "Mr. Sensitive" type (Chris Klein, from American Pie), and it's pretty much Hollywood formula from there on, as Just Friends loses momentum without losing its basic appeal. And while Reynolds invests his character with an unexpected degree of emotional nuance, Faris (Scary Movie 3) pulls out all the stops, going deliriously over-the-top to maintain her reputation as a rising comedy starlet with a (hopefully) promising future. We're not talking rocket science here, folks... just sit back, take off your thinking cap, and have some fun. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Great Comedy Movie!!!.......2007-06-18

Great comedy!

This movie had me laughing almost the entire time. Anna Faris gives an amazing performance in this movie as a ditzy pop wanna-be singer. The rest of the cast is amazing in this movie as well. The story is very good and many could relate to it, specially if you've had a crush on someone in high school and you always felt like you were never good enough, unless you were rich, famous, and thin. This is defiantly a good comedy and revolves around the holidays but it's not just another holiday comedy either.

I have this movie as my top favorite films of all times. Just watch it and you'll see what I mean. great movie at a great value!

The shipping was fast, and the DVD was in great condition. This DVD has a great variety of DVD extras. You'll also get to see a lot of behind the scenes and a writer's journey on how to become an actor for a small role in the movie. It's a great DVD with lots to offer and it will keep you entertained through out the whole movie and special features as well.

I highly recommend it!!!

4 out of 5 stars JUST FRIENDS IS JUST HILARIOUS!.......2007-06-13

This is the second movie I've watched with Ryan Reynolds in it in a short while. This movie is every bit as good as "Waiting" if not better. A quirky romantic comedy that is funny and has some heart. The DVD transfer is excellent and there are some very funny and interesting extras.

5 out of 5 stars Love Ryan Reynolds.......2007-06-08

Just a good fun movie. I love his sense of humor. I could and did watch it over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars I'm Samantha James, B*$#!.......2007-03-20

If romantic comedies are not your thing; if outlandish lines and excentric characters bug you, then please politely turn your eyes away from this review. Because this moie gives you just what you don't like.

I am not usually a fan of romantic comedies, but my interest in Ryan Reynolds led me to buying this DVD on a whim. And, I was not disappointed.

(Read synopsis for what the film is about)

I absolutly enjoyed the comedic mishaps of Chris Brander as he tried to win the heart of his high school crush. I also fell over laughing at the other cast of characters that accompanied Brander on his quest: Brander's younger brother; his pop-star diva "girlfriend", and his arch-rival. The film begins on a comedic note, and ends the way all romantic comendies do. Still, for a good laugh, and something to do on a Saturday night, this is the movie to watch!

Overall 5/5 for comedic value, and wholesome Saturday night goodness!!

4 out of 5 stars Quirky and cute........2007-03-07

Just Friends starring Ryan Reynolds and Amy Smart is silly fun. Don't take this movie too seriously, it's just one of those films you see for hijinxics and laughs. Smart is delightful as ever and Reynolds is quite a comic genius but of course Anna Faris steals every scene she is in, the scene with the toothpaste is simpy Anna. Cute date movie, this movie is worth checking out.

2 out of 5 stars Unrealistic and annoying - one slow motion kill after another.......2007-06-24

There are hundreds (at least it seems that way) of deaths shown in slow motion. It gets really annoying. Ruins what could have been a good movie.

5 out of 5 stars Possibly the most realistic Vietnam war movie ever.......2007-06-14

As many of the previous reviewers mentioned, I am a war movie fanatic. I was not in the Vietnam war, but my father flew the Huey right through the thick of the battles, and has been a Bell Helicopter employee all his life.

I watched this movie with him w en it came out on DVD, three times in a row, and once again on HD.

Dad's not a movie type guy, and no Vietnam movie ever impressed him because of too much Hollywood flair and glorification. This was completely different, he said it was the most realistic Vietnam war movie he had ever seen.

It was great listening to him point out parts of the movie and explaining how accurate a certain part was and how that's just how it was like on another part.

This movie still had some Hollywood flair to it, but when a movie can create that kind of impact on someone, and create an unforgetable evening spent with my father learning about his past, it is worth 5 + stars to me. Especially when I had such high expectations after Braveheart and the movie still impressed me, that is why I am a Mel Gibson fan.

Great movie, one of the best!

4 out of 5 stars They were Soldiers, and much more!!.......2007-05-15

I like this movie, and especially on HD. Overall, the story was good, and it was just passionate scene with Mel and Pepper at the end. I bought this for my HD Collection and I'm happy to say that it was worth the purchase! Although, its not the best HD DVD Movie that I own, it is certainly a great movie about a war. Keep me at the edge of my seat! Good war movies, and I hate war movies, but it drew me in every minute. Atleast give it a watch to see if you would like it before you by the Standard or HD version.

5 out of 5 stars The GORE of WAR.......2007-05-14

Warning do not eat anything during this film (because of the gory scenes)This HIGH-DEF WAR FILM does not hide anything, the pictures talk for themselves An absolutely Brilliant FILM only to be surpassed from the sound, amazingly detailed and directional the best gunshot sounds i have ever heard on film, you can tell with closed eyes which weapon is being fired and from where. You are virtually captured in this war film.At the end I crept out from behind my couch to check the floor of my Home Cinema for blood stains and the walls for bullet holes. It dosen't get more realistic than this unless you are a soldier

4 out of 5 stars HD ACTION.......2007-03-08

I do wish the studio had of included the lossless PCM audio instead of just Dolby Digital, but hey, the sound was fantastic anyway.

If you've got BD, get this one. It's also out on HD-DVD, can't speak to that version but it's probably equally as good.

1 out of 5 stars subpar transfer.......2007-03-18

this film looks terrible on my 1080p hdtv. this blu-ray disc looks worse than some of the regular dvds that get upscaled to 1080i thru my regular player. paramount should be ashamed of themselves.

5 out of 5 stars Into the Valley of Death.......2007-02-01

Mel Gibson's WE WERE SOLDIERS is a provocative war film. It works effectively as an action war film but that is a rather simplistic assessment. What makes this film effective is the camaraderie that flourishes and intensifies amongst the American soldiers, their valor, heroism and Mel Gibson's sincere performance as the dedicated Lieutenant Colonel Hal Moore who is the first man on and last man off the field of battle. The film is both intense and emotional and we also get to see their families stateside adding another perspective to this military engagement. Perhaps the film's greatest strength is its intimacy of putting the viewer in the center of this frenetic encounter where staying alive for the good of the whole involved reflex-like action tinged with a great deal of energy and emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Dedication to One's Loyalties Against All Odds.......2007-01-12

What I like about this movie is how both sides are depicted in this vicious engagement during the Vietnam War. You get a genuine feeling of conviction for the ideals being fought for by both opposing officers in command. The fighting is fierce and the North Vietnamese are going to hold their ground at all costs. The Americans will try and take the ground until ordered otherwise. This film examines the nature of war through the eyes of both men in charge on the field of battle. Barry Pepper in a very colorful role represents every man's instinct to survive.

4 out of 5 stars Irresistibly watchable.......2007-01-08

Well it is Mel all right; he started getting gung ho with whit "Brave heart" hand has been gearing up ever since. The only problem I have with this movie is I can not figure out what he has to say even when he tells you. With the probable exception of "All Quiet on the Western front", most war movies just use war as a back drop to their main purpose as in "Apocalypse Now" (an updated "Hart of Darkness"). This movie has the look and feel of an updated "Green Berets" Pluck out John Wayne and plug in Mel.

We know the base story is of the stand off of the NVA at Ia Drang November 1965 against overwhelming odds, with a little help of superior technology. The uniforms and equipment look pretty authentic. The terrain was well done also; it could be the real thing as much as California. Not all of Vietnam is swamp.

Even though there is a lot of action (more phosphorus than C4) this is not just a shootemup movie. They also focused on the wives back home, showing how they had to cope with the situation. There were also some cursory sub stories as a combat photographer getting more than he expected.

I have the same conundrum as others do that have not been there. The Vietnam I was in (67-68) had a few firefights; but most of the time it was our spies against their spies and there was no front. When we tangled both sides lost an even average of 15% but if you could find them and drop something on them you got your 15% from a safe distance. I was in the special reactionaries and trained for just the situation this movie depicts. I was the RTO and was supposed to fight out and retake the base to not let the NVA get a foot hold. However it never came.

One thing you can say about this movie is that you will get involved and almost forget that it is a movie.

Anyone who's watched just about any teenage film knows that the greatest evil in this world isn't chemical warfare, ethnic cleansing, or even the nuclear bomb. The worst crime known to man? Why, virginity, of course. As we've learned from countless films--from <I>Summer of '42</I> to <I>Risky Business</I>--virginity is a criminal burden that one must shed oneself of as quickly as possible. And while many of these films have given the topic a bad name, <I>American Pie</I> quietly sweeps in and gives sex some of its dignity back. Dignity, you may say? How can a film that highlights intercourse with fruit pies, premature ejaculation broadcasted across the Internet, and the gratuitous "gross-out" shots restore the dignity of a genre that's been encumbered with such heavyweights as <I>Porky's</I> and <I>Losin' It</I>? The plot may be typical, with four high school friends swearing to "score" by prom, yet the film rises above the muck with its superior cast, successful and sweet humor, and some actually rather retro values about the meaning and importance of sex. Jason Biggs, Chris Klein, Thomas Ian Nicholas, and Eddie Kaye Thomas make up the odd quartet of pals determined to woo, lie, and beg their way to manhood. The young women they pursue are wary girlfriend Vicky (Tara Reid), choir girl Heather (Mena Suvari), band geek Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), and just about any other female who is willing and able. Natasha Lyonne as Jessica, playing a similar role as in <I>Slums of Beverly Hills</I>, is the general adviser to the crowd (when Vicky tells her "I want it to be the right time, the right place," Jessica responds, "It's not a space shuttle launch, it's <I>sex</I>"). The comedic timing hits the mark--especially in the deliberately awkward scenes between Jim (Biggs) and his father (Eugene Levy). And, of course, lessons are learned in this genuinely funny film, which will probably please the adult crowd even more than it will the teenage one. <I>--Jenny Brown</I>

5 out of 5 stars American Pie.......2007-03-17

Well I had all the other movies, but this makes my collection complete. This is the kind of movie you can watch over and over again and it never gets boring.

1 out of 5 stars Just so over-rated.......2007-02-23

This may be one of the most over-rated movies of the last 20 years. It is typical mindless skirt chasing by high school boys. How many times will this premise be used before people stop watching it?? Please god stop.

Thank you

5 out of 5 stars so stupid it is funny.......2006-10-17

There are good movies and then there are movies like these that are just worth the price for the laugh factor. Yeah it does have a plot a pretty stupid one, but it is so funny. The second one is really funny too. are you trying not to watch things with sex in them or not your kids well do not watch this. this is full of sex references and inuendo. It is really funny and worth the laugh if you are like me and just are not offended.

5 out of 5 stars A pleasant teenage romp!.......2006-08-08

American Pie is a favorite for those of you who like hillarious teenage movies.Jason Biggs plays Jim,an average American teen opening new worlds in his sex life. From encounters with pies to embarrasing moments with other teenage girls,American Pie is a definite favorite.Sean William Scott is wonderfull as Scott Stifler. You'll love it!

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly touching for its genre.......2006-07-22

For a teen comedy flick with potty humour and "showcase" nudity, American Pie does really well with some coming of age themes. Four boys are on a quest to lose their virginity by prom night, and go to various lengths to impress the girls they meet. Life lessons are learned and the boys grow up in ways other than sexually. The four boys led by Jason Biggs are all likeable, and Seann William Scott had a breakout role as the party-loving fifth wheel to the group. Eugene Levy, one of great comedic alumnis from the 80s, has hilarious moments as Jim's dad. And for who can forget the Shannon Elizabeth scene and the bit with the movie's namesake?

Not a lot on the dvd, but there's a fun commentary with the staff and actors, though it's a bit crowded at times. American Pie's not a groundbreaking film, but it's a solid one for its genre, and may be one of the few really worth owning.

Matthew Broderick makes up for years of wet-noodle performances with his low-key but unsparing characterization of Jim McAllister, a high school teacher at George Washington Carver High School in Omaha, Nebraska. Driven by a strange mixture of loathing and lust for pathologically overachieving student Tracy Flick (Reese Witherspoon), McAllister encourages a dim but popular athlete, Paul (Chris Klein from <I>American Pie</I>), to run against her in the election for student-council president. Director-cowriter Alexander Payne (<I>Citizen Ruth</I>) turns this deceptively simple premise into a complex and scathing comedy of ambition, corruption, and desire, all at its most naked and petty. Every scene contains some painfully funny nuance that will make you wince in a mixture of astonishment and empathy. Witherspoon flips effortlessly back and forth from adolescent vulnerability to steely-eyed strength; she's becoming a contemporary Carole Lombard. The movie itself feels like a magnificent throwback to the richly layered comedies of the '30s, which drew their humor from sharply drawn characters and twisting plots instead of explosions of bodily fluids. With a wealth of smart, cutting details, <I>Election</I> rewards multiple viewing. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

1 out of 5 stars Bored me to tears *Spoilers*.......2007-04-18

Yea, yea, let's all beat up people with ambition. Being the president of the lazy and procastination club myself, sure I'd love to hop on that train. The thing is, this movie isn't funny or even mildly entertaining. I see absolutely no point to have Tracy Flick involved in a sexual relationship with one of her teachers, especially one who was so beneath her intellect and not in the least bit attractive. Flick makes a comment that maybe she was looking for a father-figure-but then her search seemed to just stop and there's no real point to it. If you look at it as further coal to the fire for McAlister to hate her (since it was his best friend) it doesn't really work, since he, too, struggled with the moral and ethical war within himself. What was the point of the lesibans angle or Tammy taking the fall for Tracy? Nothing in this movie seem like it was building toward anything. It was a bunch of isolated incidents thrown together. Even the ending felt like it didn't know when to end. No one ever seems to have a problem when a man is ambitious or drunk with power, but when you put those characteristics in a woman: watch out. I think it all started with that darn apple.

5 out of 5 stars Future Hillary Clinton.......2007-02-22

A true satire, Election displays Reese Witherspoon as the precise, cunning, and ruthless Tracy Flick, the student council wiz. She's going to be class president, but don't get in her way. Matthew Broderick, her history teacher sees the monster in waiting, but is unable to stop the juggernaut. In his desire to thwart, he manages to destroy his career and marriage, while Tracy Flick thrives. Witherspoon gave us a sympathetic version of this character later with Legally Blonde, but in Election, as a young teen, she balances her innocence with her craving for power, if not, order. She is your junior year girlfriend on political steroids about to become a Hillary Clinton.

Teenage frisky behavior in our modern times, gads, I didn't know what was under a girl's skirt till the Nixon administration. Lesbian sisters, hot tub teens with potty mouths and more, its all right kids.

Alexander Payne the writer director delivers repeatedly, Something About Schmidt, Sideways, and Election, his Midwesterners are having an existential crisis. Their milk and honey has mutated.

5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining and reality-based morality tale.......2006-11-29

Reese Witherspoon and Matthew Broderick star in this variation on ethics and morality tale played out through a high school election. This film reminded me very much of 2003's "Saved", where a ver similar tale was played out at a Christian school.

Here Witherspoon is remarkably well-cast as Tracy Flick, a high school go-getter than wants to be school president. However, teacher Mr. McAllister (Broderick) knows Tracy is bad news and tries his best to prevent her from winning. He enlists a football star to run against Tracy; later, the star's lesbian sister gets in on the election on an apathy ballot.

Everyone manages to violate some form of ethical behavior in this film, which is very well-acted with a brisk pace, good sets and wonderful sense or realism in a fictitious Omaha, Neb. high school. Almost every character in the story starts out wanting to do well but ends up violating some moral or ethical behavior.

Is there a point to this film? Obviously, that people will go to extremes to get what they want. I think that is secondary to the "fun" element, however. The morality tale is what makes the film memorable (aside from the brilliant acting by all the students and the direction) but it is the laughter and humor the individual stories generate that keep you glued to the story.

In the end, this is a great movie for any adult that attended school, demonstrates a human frailty, or knows anything about power and the abuse of power. It is one of many notches in the bedpost for Witherspoon, who is now Hollywood's most highest-paid actress. You'll begin to see why watching her characterization here.

5 out of 5 stars Pick Flick.......2006-11-28

Last night I finally had the chance to watch `Election' and I have to say that it was everything I hoped it would be. It was smart, funny and enjoyable, a pretty good way to spend an evening. This was truly a shining moment for its young star Reese Witherspoon, and arguably the role of Tracy Flick should have landed her her first Oscar nomination. As Tracy, Witherspoon effortlessly switches from sweet goody-two-shoes over achiever to evil revenge driven competitor.

The film follows a school election where Tracy is the sole runner for school council president. After having an affair with a teacher, Dave (Mark Harelik), who proved to be the best friend of teacher Jim McAllister (Matthew Broderick in a performance I didn't see in him) she has formed an enemy in Jim, and so when Jim realizes that her constant winning streak of getting whatever she wants no matter who she bulldozers over needs to end he bribes popular jock Paul Metzler (Chris Kline) to run against her.

This small gesture sparks a feud that gets all but too heated and leads to some pretty crazy, and funny situations. Not only does Paul run but so does his younger sister Tammy (Jessica Campbell), a lesbian who is so upset that her ex-girlfriend has taken up with Paul that she decides to run against him and when she begins to get more support than Paul and Tracy combined Tracy begins to think of ways to get Tammy removed from the race. The election is far from the only thing on Jim's mind as he becomes too close to Dave's ex-wife Linda (Delaney Driscoll) and begins an affair that may cost him his marriage.

The script is tight and fresh and the acting is genuinely hysterical (all except Chris Kline who is just a horrid actor). Matthew Broderick, an actor I am normally none to fond of, actually delivers here, but it's Reese who steels the show with every tantrum, every concerned and or distressed facial expression and that whole poster tearing scene...priceless! If you want a fresh high school comedy that's smart enough for the adult mind then pick `Election'.

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious Example Of How Deadly-Funny Dark Satire Can Be.......2006-10-16

The bite to this movie comes from its near-perfect insight into what high school, overachievers, bored teachers, society, competitive people, politics, and marriages mired in ennui are all about. It's smart, it's incredibly funny, and it gets the most out of a very good cast.

Election, set in the 1990's at a school outside Omaha, tells the story of a frightening human dynamo, a senior who wishes to cap off her near-perfect career in high school by being elected to the student counsel presidency. As played by Reese Witherspoon, Tracy Flick (whose last name spelled several times in the movie all in capital letters---"FLICK"---looks suggestively like another word) sees the office as the next logical step in her sociopathic upward climb toward a full scholarship to Georgetown. Tracy has a single-mindedness that borders on mental illness, and a ruthlessness powered by a vicious drive that at times seems genuinely scary to behold. This uber-overachiever has been top of the honor roll for years, and has headed a number of extracurricular clubs, from being editor of the school yearbook to...you name it. She has also destroyed the life and reputation of a teacher who grew carelessly fond of her, and before Election is done she does-in another, here played by Matthew Broderick. Broderick's social sciences teacher, Mr. McAllister, senses the destructive force Tracy let loose on post-high school society might become, and he makes it his mission to sabotage her bid to become class president. First McAllister convinces the school's dopey star athlete, played Chris Klein, to oppose Tracy in the election, and later McAllister crosses the line and uses his position as head of the election committee to make certain Tracy loses. The meltdowns that occur to several key characters in Election are at times played off as funny but more than once the makers of this movie were courageous enough to let them be disturbing, particularly the scene where Tracy, believing the outcome of the election has not been in her favor, breaks down emotionally, revealing the insecure, needy figure beneath her extroverted exterior.

Election is comedy at its smartest. The writing is polished, the delivery of these stunningly perfect lines is flawless, and the humor mixes cerebral parody with at times a fun version of crudity. It's one of the best dark comedies of all time.

If you see <I>Comedian</I> expecting a concert film with Jerry Seinfeld, you'll be disappointed. But if you're looking for an incisive--almost surgical--examination of the psyche of a stand-up comedian, this is your movie. <I>Comedian</I> zigzags back and forth between the hugely successful Seinfeld, who's trying to get back to his stand-up roots by developing an entirely new act, and an unknown comic named Orny Adams, whose naked craving for success is almost painful to behold. Adams lays bare his ego to an embarrassing degree; Seinfeld is more subtle but just as revealing about the fears and anxieties that drive him to go back on stage. By following these two through comedy clubs, festivals, and spots on David Letterman's talk show, the documentary cunningly explores how jokes are put together, the in-the-trenches camaraderie (tinged with competition) of stand-ups, and the sheer existential terror of trying to make people laugh. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Description

Jerry Seinfeld is a working stand-up comic again. COMEDIAN is a candidly revealing, intimately observed, and often very funny look at what it takes to be a comedian. On-stage, Jerry delivers his hilarious brand of observational humor. Off-stage, he struggles with difficult material, confronts self-doubt, revels in small successes, and accepts help and support from friends and colleagues, including Colin Quinn, Ray Romano, Chris Rock, Garry Shandling, Jay Leno, and Bill Cosby. COMEDIAN also discovers the sharp wit of rising young comic Orny Adams -- outspoken, insecure, and fanatical about becoming the "next big thing." What emerge are two fascinating journeys by two contrasting personalities who have some surprising parallels.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great Insight Into The Life of a Comedian.......2007-06-09

This is an engrossing film that highlights the life of an up-and-coming comic, against mega-comic Jerry Seinfeld's return to stand-up. It features many interesting behind the scenes situations with Jerry's famous comic friends. Well shot and crafted. As an interesting comparison, watch Jerry and friends early appearances on The Tonight Show when they were first starting out - The Best of The Tonight Show - Stand-Up Comedians (2 Discs)

2 out of 5 stars Totally Misleading.......2007-05-08

This was a total waste of money....I Love Seinfeld, but this "documentary" has little to do with Jerry Seinfeld and a lot to do with a bunch of other comedians. WAY MISLEADING!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Seinfeld - behind the scenes.......2007-03-15

This portrays to be a "behind the scenes" view of several comedians' lives showing the ups and downs of the occupation. I found it to be boring and that it just drags on. It had some funny lines but was not a comedy; it gave us some information of the occupational lives of comedians but just scattered, disjointed and incomplete. I just do not believe there is any reason for this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Who is this guy Seinfeld..........2007-02-01

Back in the last millenium this fellow Seinfeld apparently had a tv show. Who knew? The best part of this movie is the commentary by Jerry.

Seinfeld's obsession with pettiness, materialism, fame, money, name-dropping and everything wrong with America is rivetting. It's like watching a car crash: you can't turn away. Seinfeld needed to show his private jet (several times), his entourage, his penthouse view of Central Park, his private beach and his other possessions (like his pretty wife and child) to prove to us all that he is where it's at. He obviously doesn't believe it himself. In his words, "The dream of every Jewish man is to own a home in Malibu". How much more out of touch can you get. Even Sadaam Husein showed more humility. The psychopathology that forms this kind of narcissistic demon is revealled in the homunculus that is Orny Adams. A foil to the materially successful Seinfeld, Adams is a purely dysthymic, neurotic egotist. The contrast is presumably intended to highlight Jerry's success against the odds of an industry that delights in degrading and humiliating its workers. The Comedians in this movie are paid poorly, forced to work in smelly, decrepit clubs in seedy neighborhoods to rude and unappreciative audiences. We should all feel sorry for them. But we have to really feel for Jerry (or so he believes) because he is driven by an angst to toil his craft even when he has the creature comforts to relax on a beach. In reality, we should pity Seinfeld for having become so enmeshed in the bicoastal despiritualistic obsession with celebrity that he feels a need to create a documentary channeling his deeper disaffection with his own empty existance and seeking a greater salvation by reminding us all that we are not him.
Very funny.

4 out of 5 stars Stars Made of Flesh and Blood........2006-06-13

Despite the confidence that most comedians project, this documentary showcases the fact that these often brilliant performers suffer from the same type of maladies as the rest of us. They are filled with anxiety, irritability, and ambition. By focusing on a legend, Jerry Seinfeld, and an unknown, Orny Adams, the audience discerns some of these characteristics and others which result in greatness on the stage. Examples evident are the need for compulsive attention to detail along with personal obsession over delivery and rehearsal. It's hard to imagine anyone going anywhere in that business without the concentrated efforts we witness here. It's surprising to find Adams watching tapes of himself and filling notebooks copiously with jokes and material.

Seinfeld is probably the most talented comedian that I've ever seen, but I never had any idea just how much effort he puts into his work. He labors for six months building, writing and performing until he becomes confident in the new shtick he has created. Even then we find that he is not satisfied. He is an intense perfectionist as is Adams, but the younger man is far less healthy than Seinfeld. Jerry may joke about neurosis but Adams appears to be the genuine article. He is oversensitive, self-doubting, agitated, abrasive, and fairly depressed, yet in every scene he tries to sell us on why he is so great. He doesn't really believe it and neither do we. When George Shapiro decides to represent him, he tells Adams something to the effect of that he's going to be a big success but will forever remain unhappy. Without knowing him well, Shapiro has already mastered his client. After Adams laments to Seinfeld that he has not made it, the genius puts it all in perfect perspective by asking him what exactly what he'd rather be doing with his life. Adams can give no answer which is itself an excellent answer and reflective of why these fellows sacrifice so much for their vocations. This is one of those films that would be impossible to quit watching in the middle as every character is engaging at some level.

Product Description

DILBERT - the most popular comic strip of the decade - is now on DVD. With his signature turned-up tie, round glasses and buzz cut, Dilbert is already a pop culture phenomenon, providing an irreverent reference point for workers everywhere. Developed and produced by Emmy Award-winning writer/producer Larry Charles ("Seinfeld," "Mad About You"), DILBERT, the series, follows the "every man" as he copes with daily life at The Company. Daniel Stern ("The Wonder Years," Home Alone, City Slickers) stars as the voice of Dilbert, while Chris Elliot voices his roommate Dogbert, who views the entire world as existing for his personal entertainment. Joining Dilbert in the office are his fellow engineers: the no-nonsense, caffeinated Alice (Kathy Griffin) and selfish, slothful Wally. Guest voice talent includes Jason Alexander, Andy Dick, Eugene Levy, Jay Leno, Jerry Seinfeld, Stone Cold Steve Austin, Tom Green and more!

After being fired from UPN's primetime line-up, this animated series based on Scott Adams's nationally syndicated comic strip has received a well-deserved promotion to DVD. Dilbert, the bespectacled potato-shaped engineer with the upwardly mobile tie, is the poster boy for the corporately disenfranchised. Though Adams's cynical, cubicle eye-view of corporate culture was somewhat co-opted by <I>The Drew Carey Show</I>, animation gives the series a surreal flourish not possible in a live-action series. In the first episode, for example, we can see the devastation wreaked by an "all-natural" anthrax lozenge, and an interoffice riot sparked by budget cuts. Co-executive producer Larry Charles, whose resume includes <I>Seinfeld</I> and <I>Mad About You</I>, wisely preserved Adams's Kafka-esque comic vision. Dilbert may "just want to make the world a better place," but that is difficult in a workplace where the Pointy-Haired Boss insists his employees first come up with a name for an as-yet-undeveloped product, employees literally give their souls to the company, and an evil cat reigns as an evil director of human resources loathe to help employees. As the old saying goes, it's funny because it's true. The voice cast are excellent hires, with Daniel Stern as Dilbert, Larry Miller as the clueless Boss, Kathy Griffin as sardonic co-worker Alice, and Chris Elliot as Dogbert. You don't have to have a refrigerator, cubicle wall, or computer festooned with yellowed <I>Dilbert</I> strips to appreciate the series. It will strike a beleaguered chord in fans of <I>Office Space</I> and <I>The Office</I>, or anyone toiling for a company that loves misery. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Started good - and went downhill fast.......2007-05-02

There are a number of good episodes with the Dilbert tv show. Those episodes are the main reason I bought the DVD set. However, the series went downhill in the second half or so.
The comic strip never translated well to a television show. I thought the character voices were well chosen though. Jason Alexander as Catbert was classic. The stories, however, just didn't hold up.

There were a couple of episodes that were outright slams against God and religion which I don't care for. The story of Todd (God) and the Wally story which was a slam against Jesus and the Last Supper were in extremely poor taste. Make an episode slamming Mohammed, Allah and Muslims in general - watch the riots begin.

The 'Dilbert gets pregnant' episode looked so stupid from its previews that I did not watch it on television. To this day, I have not watched it on DVD. Yes, I have not watched it to completely judge it. But, given where the series had gone up to that point, it seemed to be following the same trail that lead to "Stupidville".

Should you buy it? Get it off Ebay for much cheaper than retail. That's what it is about worth.

5 out of 5 stars Dilbert the Complete Series!.......2007-03-28

Dilbert has got to be one of my top 3 favorite TV series ever. After Comedy Central took this show off air in 2006 I have been devastated for I was left with nothing to watch on Saturday mornings. Thankfully I could order the complete series right here on amazon for a low price.

I recommend Dilbert the Complete series for anyone who likes to share a chuckle or a laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Best purchase ever........2006-11-13

Undoubtedly the best purchase I've ever made. Scott Adams is a genius that manages to transform mundane, everyday situations into endless sources of comedy. I'd certainly recommend this to anyone.

5 out of 5 stars if you work 9-5 for a cold blooded corporation get this!!!!.......2006-08-14

i work for an oil company, i have to say Dilbert gets it so right that it shocks me, its funny, and its really funny because its actualy true about jobs and managers and co workers.

bottom line you have to get this because its one of those DVD's that must be owned, and its true that it never gets old, it could have went on for two more seasons for sure

5 out of 5 stars never gets old.......2006-03-24
