In the fourth and reportedly final film of the <I>Lethal Weapon</I> series, director Richard Donner reunites with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, who reprise their roles as Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh for one last hurrah in a film that is decidedly better than the third and first chapters. This time the pair are pitted against Jet Li, who plays the leader of a Chinese organized crime unit. Li, a veteran of hundreds of Hong Kong action films, more than holds his own against the more established team of Gibson, Glover, Renee Russo, and Joe Pesci with his subtle yet strong portrayal of the quietly irrepressible Wah Sing Ku. As always with the Lethal series, the plot is incredibly simple to follow: someone steals something, someone gets killed, and Murtaugh is reluctantly thrown into the mix while Riggs dives into the case with gleeful aplomb. As with the previous movies, we watch for the sheer action and chemistry alone. The action sequences throughout the fourth installment are exquisite, from the opening scene involving a flamethrower, a burning building, and a half-naked Murtaugh strutting like a chicken (don't ask, just watch), to the climactic showdown that pays genuine tribute to Jet Li's masterful martial art skills. As for chemistry, the bond between these characters is so strong by now that you sometimes feel like you're watching a TV series in its sixth season, such is the warm familiarity between the audience and the personalities on the screen. The humor is more fluid than ever, aided immeasurably by the casting of comedian Chris Rock, who like Li does a great job of making his presence known in some memorable verbal tirades that would bring a smile out of the Farrelly brothers. But it's the verbal and emotional jousting between Glover and Gibson that makes this fourth episode especially appealing; both are in peak form with great physical and verbal timing. One can only hope that if this is indeed the last of the Lethal films, that it won't be the last time we see Glover and Gibson together on screen. <I>--Jeremy Storey</I>

5 out of 5 stars Mel,Danny,Joe,Richard and Rene reunite!.......2007-01-24

Again Martin Riggs(Mel Gibson) and Captain Roger Murtaugh(Danny Glover) are doing their dirty police work in this third and most recent sequel to 1987's Warner Bros. action-packed film LETHAL WEAPON. Now Martin and Lorna(Rene Russo) are husband and wife. Roger still has his wife Trish(Darlene Love) and their children(some are now young adults). Oscar-winner Joe Pesci returns as the annoying Leo Getz("Anything you need,Leo gets!"). Saturday Night Live veteran Chris Rock(BOOMERANG) and Jet Li join the cast in this installment. Eric Clapton brings another great song in this soundtrack,PILGRIM,from his 1998 album of the same title. And again,Richard Donner directed this film. I guess he woudn't have allowed anyone else to. This film was theatrically released on July 10,1998 and was just as successful as the three predecessors. Possibly,Gibson and Glover will reteam for future films, with or without Donner or anyone else aforementioned. I heard a rumor over a decade ago, that a fifth LW film was in the works along with this film. But I think it was in 1997 when this film was made. Maybe it was over a decade ago, that this film's script was written. If Gibson and Glover haven't yet received stars on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame, they should now.

3 out of 5 stars Very good, but flawed in several areas.......2006-12-16

3 1/2 stars.

Being a huge fan of both comedy and action films,I love seeing films that have both action and comedy in them being made and released. And despite how dark the first "Lethal Weapon" film was,the humor in LW2 and LW3 alllowed the idea of the fourth LW film being an action/comedy film to be a great idea. Not only was the idea to bring back Mel Gibson,Danny Glover,Joe Pesci, and Rene Russo for what has become the last LW film a excellent, the addition of Chris Rock was both smart and creative, while it was a pretty cool idea at the same time. Having Jet Li play the villian here was a nice touch, especially since Li now shares the honor with Gary Busey of being one of the two famous actors who share the honor of being one of the only two famous actors playing lead villains out of the LW series, for the LW film that Busey was in (LW1),and for the LW film that Li is in (LW4).

The story is well developed, and is sort of a direct follow-up to the first LW film, with leftovers and flashback information from both LW2 and LW3. A combination of the story for the first LW film and the story for the second LW film, this film finds Mel Gibson reprising his role as Martin Riggs, and Danny Glover reprising his role as Roger Murtaugh. In this installment of the LW films, not only do you find both Riggs and Murtaugh going through personal struggles in their own lives (Riggs being engaged to Rene Russo's character of Lorna Cole and Cole being pregnant, with Riggs not feeling like the time is right for him to be a father, while you find Murtaugh being worried about his daughter Rianne making him a grandfather, and what resulted in Rianne doing just that for Murtaugh),they have another tough assignment to deal with. That tough assignment is to bring down a murderous Chinese group by the name of The Triads, lead by a man named Wah Sing Ku (Jet Li's character)who bring illegal Chinese immigrants into America to begin new lives under slavery.
This becomes difficult for Riggs and Murtaugh not only because of the level of the assignment, but also due to Riggs and Murtaugh being so busy in their own lives during this period of time, and an official new member to their "team" of Riggs,Murtaugh, and Joe Pesci's Leo Getz. That official new member turns out to be a younger and more recent officer of the LAPD,Detective Lee Butters (Chris Rock),who finds himself having problems with Murtaugh that, once you discover them, will make you laugh and realize how far the producers of this movie expanded the first three LW films for this film itself.

As I already said, this movie is very good, but flawed in some areas,so let me address all of that. While it was nice to see Richard Donner and the producers of this film turn this film into an action/comedy with LW2,LW3,and even some of LW1 having signs of comedy to them,a problem results in this script due to that. The humor in this film works, but is usually tied into the movie story and results in less action, something that hurts this film a little bit. Don't get me wrong--the jokes here are good, but are still nowhere close to Chris Rock's humor outside of this film and Joe Pesci's humor in the first two "Home Alone" films. Also, the action in here is the weakest out of all of the action scenes from the first three LW films. This time, the action here is more martial arts than the original style of action from the first three LW films, making the movie a little bit hard to follow and deteriorating it from some--but not all--of its potential. For the last LW film, you would surely think that the action would be more real and more towards the style of the action that was used in the first three LW films--something that every film needs for its sequels.

There are some really good scenes in this movie though, which pulls this movie off. Not only do Mel Gibson and Danny Glover do a good job at bringing out the original personalities of Riggs and Murtaugh in this movie (a good sign, considering the fact that Gibson and Glover were a lot younger when they made the first three LW films, compared to Gibson and Glover both getting older during LW4's filming),Chris Rock is a good supplement to Gibson,Glover, and Joe Pesci. Rock being in this film allows this film to have more chemistry and humor in it,which works on behalf of Rock's scenes with not only Joe Pesci, but also the scenes that find how Rock's character of Butters is like around Murtaugh and to see how Butters,Riggs,Murtaugh, and Getz all work together as a team in this movie.
There is also a lot of energy that is brought out in this movie, which keeps it on a somewhat similiar level that the first three LW films were set on. The drama here, which is brought out very well by the script (most notably the graveyard scene with Gibson and Pesci at the end of the movie),does a good job at letting the producers of this movie make it more serious and more funny then the previous LW films,at the same time.

The "Behind The Scenes" feauture that appears at the end of this VHS is good, and a good substitute for the fact that as of this writing,LW4 has not been issued as a director's cut (something that the first three LW films got). It is also worth adding that a lot of good music from older bands/musicians (Van Halen,Eric Clapton, etc.)appear here, and prove themselves to be excellent supplements to this movie.

Overall, while this film could have been better,it still does a good job at living up to the standards that it was intended for,and is worth watching after you have watched LW1,LW2,and LW3 in order. Hopefully, this will be issued as a director's cut like the other three LW films were. I would say that this film does a good, worthwhile, and interesting way and job at ending the series of "Lethal Weapon" films.

5 out of 5 stars The best lethal Weapon Since the first one.......2006-10-20

The Lethal Weapon series has been a great item in the whole action/comedy buddy genre. The first was instant classic from the 80's. Easily the best. All of its sequels were terrific, however just short of being as good. However this fourth installment I believe may come to being as good as the first. I would not say better, but I do not which one I would rather watch. Their are just so many great things to take note of in this film such as the car chase scene and the ifhgitng sequences performed by Jet Li. Brinigin in Jet ;Li was a great idea, plus compared to his other american films that followed (Romoeo Must Die, Kiss of the Dragon, The One) the movie ws deinetly one of his better films (even though he was not in the starring role). And the comedy could not have any better with the addition of Chris Rock. Although I do not think he's that funny in real life, his antics defiently gave me a good laugh in this movie. Anyway, here is the plot.
The movie starts of with Riggs (Mel Gibson)and Murtough (Danny Glover) facing off a pyromaniac. While they are attempting to take him down we learn that both Rigg's girlfriend Lorna (Rene Ruso) and Murtough's daughter Rianne (Tracy Wolfe) are pregnant.
The film then fowards to about nine moths later. While fishing Murtough and Riggs (And Leo Gets played by Joe Pesci) get into a gun battle with chinese mobsters. We learn that these guys were smuggling in chinese immigrants. The leader of the bad guys is Wah Sing Ku (Jet Li) who needs the immigrants to produce counterfeit money. He will then use this money in order to free the "4 fathers" (4 big chinese Criminals, one whom is Wah Sing Ku's brother) Also a young a detective named Lee Buttters (Chris Rock) joins the gang and helps the investigation. He also happens to be the father of Riannes baby but Murtough does not know that yet.

In short Lethal Weapon is a great fun film. Get it now a fun enjoyable time!

4 out of 5 stars Great to see Danny and Mel together again.......2006-08-29

When "Casino" opened, some complained that Joe Pesci's performance was a retread of his work in "GoodFellas". I made the defence that his character was the same sort of person, and it would be inappropriate to act in a different way.

I'll make the same sort of defence for "Lethal Weapon 4", to anyone who claims that the series is settling down into a formula. It is, yes, but it was always about character, and these characters are carried not by a story which keeps giving them different things to do, or different interactions to have, but simply new lines and convincing performances. We get this with each new "Lethal Weapon" film, and "LW4" shows that the same thing can work yet again, making it about four times as good as you'd expect. Who cares if the witty banter is the same type as in the other three movies, it's still slightly different in its specifics, getting a little more outrageous each time. And even though Mel Gibson said a while back he had no interest in doing another "Lethal Weapon" film, no matter how good the script was, he and Danny Glover are putting in as much effort as they always have, making the screen sizzle with their chemistry.

This time, the plot involves some Chinese mobsters who Riggs and Murtaugh first meet they disrupt their fishing trip with gunplay. It transpires that they are attempting to buy back, from some other Chinese mobsters, some old dudes who lead the Triads. I wonder, in retrospect, how they got captured by anyone in the first place, if they're hard enough to be the leaders of the Triads, but never mind, because we get another enormously effective villain out of the Chinese element. His name is Wah Sing Ku, played by Jet Li, the star of those many violent martial arts movies that dealers at film fairs will tell you they have a copy of out in the car, with Japanese subtitles, but they couldn't get it in any other way, it's banned! Li creates a cold, sadistic-yet-disciplined scumbag, who deserves every second of Riggs' disgusted looks. He does this by not changing his facial expression from a totally mastered look of calculation, even when he breaks out into spectacular moves of violence. These are also performed skillfully, and Wah Sing is such a quick cat that, at one point, he even dodges a bullet. The guy is as seemingly invincible as the villains who inhabit the higher levels of "Mortal Kombat".

The action sequences are terrific, and I don't just mean entertaining and well-done, I mean exciting. That's a rare thing, especially for a cops-and-robbers comedy, but the slick cinematography and the wonderfully energetic crunch-bang-boom sound stirs us until we're dissolved in the onscreen activity.

Of course, we still have to have the "Lethal Weapon" humour here, and the members of the trusted supporting cast are all back to enrich it, with Leo Getz (Pesci) thinking he's become a private investigator, and Lorna Cole (Rene Russo) pregnant, as is Murtaugh's daughter Rianne. The latter has been knocked up by Lee Butters, a cop who hangs around with Riggs and Murtaugh, and who is very funny despite being played by Chris Rock.

"Lethal Weapon 4" is not as good as the other three films in its series, borrowing their heart as a substitute for one of its own, and certainly without one outstandingly memorable line, which the others all had. It's all glossy, cocky surface. But likeably glossy, hilariously cocky, and difficult to resist.

3 out of 5 stars Introducing Jet Li.......2006-08-13

The series had pretty much run it's course, but Jet Li gave this movie a real punch. As a fan, it was really interesting to see him as a villain. I was scared of him.

The penguins steal the show. In the sprightly <I>Madagascar</I>, a mid-life crisis inspires Marty the Zebra (voiced by Chris Rock) to escape from his lifelong home, a New York zoo. His equally pampered friends--Alex the Lion (Ben Stiller), Gloria the Hippo (Jada Pinkett Smith), and Melman the Giraffe (David Schwimmer)--then escape to bring him back. Unfortunately, their attempt at damage control persuades zoo officials that the animals are unhappy, so all four get shipped to an animal preserve in Kenya...only a squad of maniacal penguins change the destination to Antarctica. The quartet end up on an island where, in addition to meeting some hedonistic lemurs, they learn about the food chain--and that Alex is a different link on the chain from the other three. <I>Madagascar</I> doesn't achieve the snappy perfection of a Pixar movie, but it tops most other computer-animated efforts; the collision of friendship and predator instincts makes for an unusually gripping conflict. The vocal performances of the central characters is serviceable, but Sacha Baron Cohen (<I>Da Ali G Show</I>) provides topnotch lunacy as the lemur king, and the penguins--voiced mostly by the animators themselves--are the best thing in the movie. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice DVD.......2007-06-21

I watched this movie with my mom and we both thought it was really cute and funny. The penguins are great and some of the jokes are definitely more appreciated by the adults. The DVD extras were awesome too; there's a Penguin Xmas caper that's great, plus they have behind the scenes stuff etc. Overall it's an enjoyable short cartoon that's at least worth a look.

5 out of 5 stars Best cartoon of 2005; laughs for all ages.......2007-06-06

Since Shrek, DreamWorks pictures has annually put out cartoons aimed at audiences of all ages. Most of these end up behind Pixar's creations as best cartoon of the year. 2005 was one of the few exceptions; first, Pixar did not release any movie that year. Second, this movie is actually very good. It tells the story of four overly domesticated zoo animals who inadvertantly end up in Madagascar, where they have to learn to survive against the odds and in spite of themselves. The movie is written as a comedy with no romance or terror, and some action sequences. As a comedy, it includes elements of sarcasm, singing, slapstick and a lot of outright stupidity. Most of the jokes are original and appropriate for all ages, and the animation is quite believable and looks like a cross between the CGI wonders of Pixar and traditional cartoon drawings from the 1960's. The voiceovers are great, and all the characters are excellent. Most notable is Sacha Baron Cohen's first big role in a major Hollywood release. Here, he is the king of a band of lemurs, and his experience from the Da Ali G Show shines through as he sings away in a South Asian accent.

Overall, a great movie. The plot is simple but very original, along with the comedy. Fun for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Great move.......2007-05-16

Love this move it was so funny and I'm still a kid at heart. thank you

4 out of 5 stars Madagascar.......2007-05-13

This was a very enjoyable movie and I have sent it to a frined who also enjoyed viewing it. Very cute! I loved the Move It Move It song. I was hilarious at the end of the movie.

3 out of 5 stars I like to move it, move it.......2007-05-07

-The simple story is about Zoo animals that lead a very comfy life in NY. The Zebra called Marty longs for the Wild and after a failed attempt to visit Connecticut he and the other animals that include the Lion Alex, the Giraffe Melman, and the Hippo Gloria get sent to Madagascar. Whiles there they struggle to survive and have to deal with Alex and his growing need for steak.

-This movie isn't in the same league as "Finding Nemo" or "Toy Story" but what it has going for it is laugh out loud moments, and lots of it. The stuff with the animals in NY are funny, but things don't really get funny till they arrive in Madagascar and have to deal with the wild. The two funniest and best things about the movie are the Penguins and the Lemurs. The Penguins have this hush hush nature to them that just makes them so hilarious. Their dry sarcastic delivery also helps in their humor. The Lemurs are also great, especially their King Julien who should make anyone that has the smallest sense of humor crack up like crazy. When we first meet them they provide the single greatest LOL moment in the whole movie by dancing to the song "I like to move it". I haven't laughed that hard at a movie like that since "Scary Movie 3". I don't know why but the whole notion of Lemurs dancing just cracks me up.

-The animation isn't exactly the best looking in the world but it does fit the movie's silly feel. The voice acting is okay for the most part but you can tell some the actors are clearly just phoning it in *cough* Ben Stiller *cough*. The ones that do a great job in the movie are Sascha Baron Cohen as the hilarious King Julien, Cedric the Entertainer as Maurice, the guys that did the Penguin stuff and Jada Pinkett Smith as the Hippo. The Pinkett Smith thing is actually really funny because you have someone as tiny as her doing the voice for something as huge as a Hippo. Yet despite all that her voice works perfectly for the character and does help with the humor

-No one will confuse this with a great CGI movie like "Toy Story" but it is very funny and very entertaining so for that I recommend it.

Michael Moore's superb documentary (following in the footsteps of <I>Roger & Me</I> and <I>The Big One</I>) tackles a meaty subject: gun control. Moore skillfully lays out arguments surrounding the issue and short-circuits them all, leaving one impossible question: why do Americans kill each other more often than people in any other democratic nation? Moore focuses his quest around the shootings at Columbine High School and the shooting of one 6-year-old by another near his own hometown of Flint, Michigan. By approaching the headquarters of K-Mart (where the Columbine shooters bought their ammo) and going to Charlton Heston's own home, Moore demands accountability from the forces that support unrestricted gun sales in the U.S. His arguments are conducted with the humor and empathy that have made Moore more than just a gadfly; he's become a genuine voice of reason in a world driven by fear and greed. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Acclaimed filmmaker Michael Moore (Roger & Me) takes aim at America's love affair with guns and violence in this Oscar(r)-winning* film that "demands attention" (People)! Mixing riveting footage, hilarious animation and candid interviews with everyone from the NRA's Charlton Heston to shock-rocker Marilyn Manson, Bowling for Columbine is a "brilliant" (The Hollywood Reporter) tour de force of filmmaking. *2002: Documentary Feature

4 out of 5 stars Improtant issues done well-with reservations.......2007-06-18

There is much to like AND dislike about this movie.

people often dismiss M/M as a leftist, but I think he strikes a balance in this film as an equal-opportunity critic of both the far left AND the far right (note the discussion with Marilyn Manson about Bill Clinton where they both are quite critical of Mr. Bill).

The sections on Canada and gun control are quite deep in debunking the rationales of causes of violence in America. However, trying to compare violence in different countires and cultures (i.e., comparing America's violent past with the fact that Germany has less violence today but was responsible for the Holocaust) depends on relativity and perspective.

The section on blacks, violence, and the media was dead-on target, with Mike and a white professor walking through South Central Los Angeles without anyone trying to harm them, although it would have been interesting if they had interviewed one of the residents about their opinions of the perceptions of their community. The cartoon on violence and race relations was also thought provoking, if a tad simplified (the 'toon omits the fact that blacks DID rebel against our oppression between the slave rebellions and Rosa Parks, although this is not well known among non-historians).

The Charlton Heston interview was ok, except I did not like the exploitation of the picture of the dead six year old Michigan girl who was killed by gunfire and what Mike does with the picture in this scene. This smacks of opporunitist grandstanding of the worst kind, and I would hate to see the reaction of the child's parents to this!

But that is the only thing I really disliked about the film. That aside, it says a lot of things that really need to be said and provokes a lot of thought.

5 out of 5 stars "Sicko", the movie on the health care industry, opens June 29th!.......2007-06-08

Michael Moore rules! Keep hope alive!
Go see "SICKO" on JUNE 29th! I'll be there!!

3 out of 5 stars Not nearly as good as Farenheit.......2007-06-07

I expected a little more from this movie after watching Farenheit 911, perhaps Moore has gotten better with time. It's difficult to grasp what point he's trying to make in this film. In one breath Moore says that Americans are afraid of one another and lock their doors every night and behave irrationally, yet in the next he lists crime statistics as being multiple times higher than other countries. So what is the point? Americans lock their door because the crime rate is high, it seems like we're actually being intelligent rather than irrational. The cartoon with the Pilgrams and early America is hilarious and worth the price of admission, but even that winds up being very skewed at the end. I wish Moore would have tackled the problem of inner cities and the rampant gun problem rather than attack the "whites" throughout the entire film.

I am certainly in favor of far stricter regulations and laws regarding gun use, but Moore just seems to touch on way too many points that are disjointed. At one point he attacks the media for scaring us, yet he is a very member of this media and is basically just a reporter himself. There are some very humorous parts and some very intelligent insights, but Moore was definitely more polished by the time he produced Farenheit. I was slightly disappointed overall by this film, but it keeps your interest throughout.

5 out of 5 stars guns don't kill people?.......2007-04-23

This film, flawed as it may be (mostly in the eyes of its detractors), once again must confront the blatantly inane axiom that "guns don't kill people." Guns DO kill people; and the people who use them are the cowards that stand behind them. The American Rifle Murderers and others of their ilk try to hide behind a Second Amendment that is now outdated historically and morally. And their gun lobbying and support have produced not only Columbine but the most recent tragedy in Virginia (2007). MIchael Moore should be applauded and lionized as a humorist with a true grit kick. What he says in this film is played out in this free (to die) society on a daily basis.

1 out of 5 stars is this what liberals have been reduced to?.......2007-04-03

ive seen this movie and was disappointed. i mean ask yourselfs, is this about what really happend at columbine school or is just moore's opinion on a tragic event? id say its mostly moore's opinions on the subject. anyone in their right mind could easily tell ya guns dont kill people, people kill people. obviously moore ignored the students motive for their shootings. if people like moore did real research, they would explain why these two students went over the edge. its easy, they went two far after other students picked on a insulted them from time to time and like any student with low esteem, they decide to do somthing they regret. the problem is people cant get seema to get along with each other and instead call names, which libs would know all about that before they hear someone out. back to the movie, if moore really wanted this to be true, not only would he indeed talk about gun control, but how everyone should treat everyone else. u dont have to like each other, but should respect each other. i understand many might disagree with me on this review, but can i help being open-minded on issues????

With sidesplitting dialogue and rampant profanity, <I>Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back</I> reunites Kevin Smith's dynamic duo in supreme lowbrow style. It's the <I>fifth</I> comedy in Smith's celebrated New Jersey "trilogy." Here Quick-Stop potheads Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) wreak vengeance on Hollywood, where Miramax is making a "Bluntman & Chronic" feature inspired by J. and S.B., but without their permission. En route from Jersey to La La Land, Jay and his "hetero life mate" encounter sexy jewel thieves (including the delightful Shannon Elizabeth), a precocious orangutan, a dimwit wildlife marshal (Will Ferrell), and a nonstop parade of in-jokes, harmless (yet controversial) gay jokes, and splendid celebrity cameos. While gently biting the Miramax hand that feeds him, and paying affectionate homage to the <I>Star Wars</I> saga, Smith sheds all inhibitions to give Jay and Silent Bob a stellar sendoff that's nasty, sassy, and undeniably hilarious. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Description

Packed with stars including Ben Affleck (GOOD WILL HUNTING), Chris Rock (NURSE BETTY), Shannon Elizabeth (AMERICAN PIE), Jason Lee (ALMOST FAMOUS), and more, this wildly irreverent comedy is actor/director Kevin Smith's hilarious finale to the adventures of Jay and Silent Bob that began in CLERKS and ran through MALLRATS, CHASING AMY, and DOGMA! When best buddies Jay (Jason Mewes) and Silent Bob (Smith) discover that a major motion picture is being based on their likenesses, they head for Hollywood to claim the big movie money they deserve. But when the dopey duo learn that they've been cut out of the cash, they set out to sabotage the flick at all costs! Featuring a host of celebrity cameos set to a hot hit soundtrack, Jay and Silent Bob's raucous cross country road trip is a crash course in the rules of the road with a nonstop assortment of outrageous characters that will have you laughing out loud!

5 out of 5 stars Kevin Smith...........2007-05-26

Is the man. If you do not like any of his work (humor) then you should not watch this movie. However, if you can seperate yourself from the type of humor he writes, then you can enjoy the slapshot, twisted, backwards humor he brings to this particular type of movie (series of movies) he has written and acted in. However, most anyone could find something to complain about if you take it too seriously.
I love his work!!!! Clerks II (Two-Disc Widescreen Edition)Clerks (Collector's Series)Dogma (Special Edition)Mallrats (10th Anniversary Extended Edition)Chasing Amy - Criterion Collection

5 out of 5 stars great.......2007-05-22

this is a great and funny movie, but since a lot of the jokes are inside jokes, you should definetley pick up kevins other movies first, clerks , chasing amy , mallrats, and dogma, which all feature jay and silent bob

5 out of 5 stars Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back........2007-01-05

A great film, All-star cast. A fun trip in the life of two great men from the East coast JERESY REWLZ!!! If you liked Mall Rats or Clerks you'll love this movie!

5 out of 5 stars That's what the internet is for. Slandering others anonymously. Stopping the flick isn't gonna stop that. .......2006-12-17

Kevin Smith proved with J.S.B.S.B. that he is no longer just a glorified independent film maker. In past films, Kevin Smith seemed to have a limited appeal, mostly among arm-chair directors (such as myself)who had become jaded with the Hollywood film industry, but with his slap-stick-like middle finger to the movie industry he seems to have branched out and struck a note with the "MTV audience" (10 to 16 year olds). Smith's grade-school humor, delivered mostly by Jay, is nothing new to previous movies, but with the focus on Jay & Silent Bob this humor became more evident AND more inviting to a younger audience.

Nonetheless, Smith has not alienated his core audience who are, "...over and underweight guys who can't get laid." (See Holden McNeil in "Chasing Amy"). The simple visual affects, as in his past movies, are FAR overshadowed by the fantastic dialogue he writes which has Hollywood stars chomping at the bit to deliver. If anything, the only disappointment was a very thin plot. But as he did in Mallrats, for what J.S.B.S.B. is lacking in plot, Smith sure as hell made up for it in laughs.

This movie junkie gives "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" a 5 out of 5.. And if you don't like that then you can get the F#@k out.

3 out of 5 stars Very funny beginning and end.......2006-09-25

Jay and Silent Bob discover that a comic book, Bluntman and Chronic, which was based on their lives, is being made into a movie. They are also introduced to the internet and the many thousands of people posting derogatory comments about the upcoming movie and the comic book. Too stupid to realize these people don't even know them and are commenting on their characters, Bluntman and Chronic. They decide to go to Hollywood to stop the movie from being made.

On their trip Jay falls in love with Justice played by Shannon Elizabeth. She and her three friends convince the guys to steal a monkey from a testing lab as an animal rights protest. The real reason is as a cover so the girls can steal diamonds from a nearby building. After stealing the monkey they are pursued by a federal wildlife marshal played by Will Ferrell.

The middle part with the jewel thieves and stealing the monkey almost grinds the film to a halt, it's that stupid. The beginning and the end however, are very funny. This a self-indulgant film but for me they were the funniest parts. I love inside jokes and people who can make fun of themselves. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon are very good as themselves acting in Good Will Hunting 2: Hunting Season, as well as directors Gus Van Sant and Wes Craven. There are a lot of good cameos: George Carlin, Chris Rock, Judd Nelson, James Vander Beek, Jason Biggs and scene stealing from Star Wars legends Carrie Fisher and Mark Hammill.

History will place an asterisk next to <I>A.I.</I> as the film Stanley Kubrick <I>might</I> have directed. But let the record also show that Kubrick--after developing this project for some 15 years--wanted Steven Spielberg to helm this astonishing sci-fi rendition of <I>Pinocchio</I>, claiming (with good reason) that it veered closer to Spielberg's kinder, gentler sensibilities. Spielberg inherited the project (based on the Brian Aldiss short story "Supertoys Last All Summer Long") after Kubrick's death in 1999, and the result is an astounding directorial hybrid. A flawed masterpiece of sorts, in which Spielberg's gift for wondrous enchantment often clashes (and sometimes melds) with Kubrick's harsher vision of humanity, the film spans near and distant futures with the fairy-tale adventures of an artificial boy named David (Haley Joel Osment), a marvel of cybernetic progress who wants only to be a real boy, loved by his mother in that happy place called home.

Echoes of Spielberg's <I>Empire of the Sun</I> are clearly heard as young David, shunned by his trial parents and tossed into an unfriendly world, is joined by fellow "mecha" Gigolo Joe (played with a dancer's agility by Jude Law) in his quest for a mother-and-child reunion. Parallels to <I>Pinocchio</I> intensify as David reaches "the end of the world" (a Manhattan flooded by melted polar ice caps), and a far-future epilogue propels <I>A.I.</I> into even deeper realms of wonder, even as it pulls Spielberg back to his comfort zone of sweetness and soothing sentiment. Some may lament the diffusion of Kubrick's original vision, but this is Spielberg's <I>A.I.</I> (complete with one of John Williams's finest scores), a film of astonishing technical wizardry that spans the spectrum of human emotions and offers just enough Kubrick to suggest that humanity's future is anything but guaranteed. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

4 out of 5 stars David is 11 years old. He weighs 60 pounds. He is 4 feet, 6 inches tall. He has brown hair. His love is real. But he is not........2007-06-22

When I first saw this film back in the summer of 2001, I definitely saw more Stanley Kubrick then Steven Spielberg like alot of people did, but then again this was Kubrick's dream project for many many years. And after he died, Spielberg figured the best way to honor Kubrick was to make this film.

Set in the not-so-far future where humans can make realistic robots (called mechas) comes an interesting take on the famous fairy tale Pinocchio.

David (wonderfully played by Haley Joel Osment) is the first of his kind,an artificial kid which is the first to have real feelings, who really wants to be a real boy.

I still don't understand why no-one really liked this film, yes it's long but I love long films. I guess people weren't ready for a film like this or the fact it was a weird combination of two director's styles.

But overall I found this a very enjoyable film and thought Haley Joel Osment should have gotten an nomination for his wonderful and heartbraking performance. And if you watch him very closely, throught out the whole film,he never blinks his eyes.

3 out of 5 stars Pinocchio meets Blade Runner indeed..........2007-05-14

A drama in all the sense of the word, A.I. Artificial Intelligence, brings to the screen the story of a couple that adopts an android capable of love following their son going into a coma. Things become rather complicated when the young boy regains consciousness...
The cast does a good job in their respective roles though its Haley Joel Osment that steals the show.
The similarities with Pinocchio are evident and the film focuses on human relations, hope and inner strength, as well as love, devotion and integrity.
Very serious and very slow at times it does not aim so much to entertain as to stimulate one's mind and emotions.
Recommended for Haley Joel Osment (who is really great) fans and for those with a taste for depression in the extreme.

3 out of 5 stars Blade Runner meets Pinocchio.......2007-02-24

I will say the movie is mesmerizing to watch simply because the visual effects are so good, but it is a highly derivative movie. Kind of like Blade Runner meets Pinocchio with an excrutiatingly long ending as Spielberg tries to sap as much emotion as he can out of this. Personally, I thought it was enough when David finally discovered he wasn't real. That scene carried with it a ton of emotional weight, but of course Spielberg couldn't content himself with such a somber ending to what was a very long journey for the boy to meet his maker. Probably the most impressive scene was that in the robot graveyard under the light of an artificial moon, where robots tried to piece themselves back together from the left over parts. It really gave this viewer empathy with their plight, especially when they were rounded up for the ensuing carnage in a carnival of robotic horrors. Spielberg picks and chooses from a number of science fiction themes as well as children's stories to piece together this ode to artificial intelligence.

5 out of 5 stars A Boy and His Mom, based on 'Super-toys Last All Summer Long'.......2007-02-05

Steven Spielberg is the best movie director ever, if not the greatest human being on our Earth... Now... for the review... A.I. Artificial Intelligence was originally a project - a long time project - of director Stanley Kubrick (Dr Strangelove, Eyes Wide Shut). Kubrick died before the project had progressed too far. I knew this movie was dedicated to Kubrick but the movie was just so very good I spent little time trying to discover any hidden meaning. I was thinking, 'this is the best movie I've ever seen'. Spielberg and crew do a wonderful job here.

Haley Joel Osmet plays 'David' an 11 year old boy who is actually an advanced robot. David is an experimental design equipped to learn and feel. David is adopted into the family of Monica and Henry Swinton (Frances O'Connor and Sam Robards). They have an older son Martin (Jake Thomas) who isn't always kind to his new brother.

The message isn't very subtle. . . Over and over and over, and over, David cries, "Please make me a real boy".

In the end David is hugged by his mother Monica and lies down with her, the narrator saying, "for one day. . . there was no Martin. . . no Henry. . . no doctor Hobby. . ." Only David and his Mom.

    5 out of 5 stars Someday ..........2007-02-04

... this film will be rediscovered and pronounced a classic! Mark my words and those of some of the other reviewers here. If ever there was a film that was ahead of its time, this is it. Fifty years from now it will stand in the company of films like "The Wizard of Oz" as an American movie classic. Breathtaking in every sense of the word and superior in every way to the current so called 'fairytale for adults' "Pan's Labyrinth." Long after that movie has faded from our collective consciousness, "A.I." will live on, possibly even eclipsing the memory of "E.T." This is one of Spielberg's best!

Comedian Chris Rock makes a raucous return to his stand-up roots in this HBO special filmed at Harlem's legendary Apollo Theater. Despite his manic and profane delivery, Rock's comedy is often rooted in traditional subjects for comedians: family relationships, misunderstandings between men and women, and observations on how childhood has changed. But he takes his material right to the edge, proving himself to be a sharp-eyed satirist. Serious and timely issues, such as school shootings or children being neglected by partying parents, are tackled by Rock, who's not afraid to slip in a serious point while being hysterically funny. His defense of President Clinton against his accusers is a good example of how Rock's material is almost always bound to offend someone: he slices through the self-righteous rhetoric of the impeachment spectacle, but even the behavior he defends comes in for ridicule with jokes that are extremely funny as well as extremely coarse. The pace of this one-hour show is uneven, and some viewers will no doubt find Rock's penchant for using profanity as punctuation tiresome. But those who like intelligent comedy with a hard edge will find much to laugh at in <I>Chris Rock: Bigger and Blacker</I>. <I>-- Robert J. McNamara</I>
