It's silly, it's superficial, it's so desperately earnest about its tale of time-spanning love that you almost wish for a cheap flatulence gag just to break the solemn mood. But there's something so unabashedly gushy and entertaining about <I>Somewhere in Time</I> that you can't begrudge its enduring popularity. The film has become a staple of romantic-movie lovers since its release in 1980, and endless showings on cable TV have turned it into a dubious classic of sorts--a three-hanky weeper that anyone can enjoy as a guilty pleasure or a beloved favorite, with no apologies necessary.

In his first film after the star-making success of <I>Superman</I>, Christopher Reeve stars as a contemporary playwright who visits a posh hotel and sees the portrait of an actress (Jane Seymour) who had performed there in 1912. He becomes obsessed with this beautiful woman and learns all he can about her, and then discovers a method of hypnotically transporting himself backward in time to meet her. "Is it ... you?" she says upon seeing the lovestruck playwright, and it's clearly a mutual attraction. But even the slightest reminder of the playwright's modern time can jar him from his seemingly real existence in the past, so his wonderful love affair is constantly just a step from being stolen away.

Based on Richard Matheson's novel <I>Bid Time Return</I>, this flaky film may strain one's tolerance for plot holes and corny romance, but it's hard to deny its lasting appeal--and let's face it, guys, it'll make wives and girlfriends swoon if they're in a tearjerker mood. --Jeff Shannon

Somewhere In Time is the story of a young writer who sacrifices his life in the present to find happiness in the past, where true love awaits him. Years later, Richard Collier is overwhelmed by a photograph of a beautiful young woman (Jane Seymour). Another picture of this woman in her later years reveals to him that she is the same woman who had given him a gold watch. Collier then becomes obsessed with returning to 1912 and the beautiful young woman who awaits him there.

5 out of 5 stars Great Purchase.......2007-06-08

I bought this DVD as a gift for Mother's Day. Amazon delivered the movie quickly and in great condition. My mother loved it - definitely will order from them again!

5 out of 5 stars One of the most romantic films of all time.......2007-05-31

Somewhere in Time is the movie I look to whenever someone asks me how did the whole time travel romance genre get started. The thought of finding ones soulmate living in another age has been explored many times since- but few with such passion and beauty as in Somewhere in Time. Jane Seymour is ethereal as the beautiful actress who falls for a mysterious traveller- a playwright who has come back through time to be with her. Christopher Reeve is at his most endearing- shy and yet confident. SMooth but not completely suave as a man out of time and place courting the woman he loves beyond measure.
This is a must for all die hard romantics! The music is beautiful and will always remind you of this film after you see it.

A talking baseball and a talking bat might not be the most likely characters to inspire a personal revelation about perseverance and self-esteem, but in Everyone's Hero it's just those two things that help young Yankee Irving (Jake T. Austin) overcome his reputation as a baseball loser and become a true American hero. A ten-year old spurned by the neighborhood kids because of his repeated strike-outs at bat, Yankee is at a point of personal crisis. A chance encounter with a talking foul ball named Screwie (Rob Reiner) and some time spent with his father (Mandy Patinkin), who's a janitor for the New York Yankees, gives Yankee cause for some serious reflection. When Babe Ruth's famous bat "Darlin'" (Whoopi Goldberg) is stolen by opposing teammate Lefty Maginnis (William H. Macy) and Yankee's father is fired as a result of the theft, it suddenly falls to Yankee and his new friend Screwie to find Darlin' and return her to Babe Ruth before the Chicago Cubs loose the final game of the World Series to the New York Yankees. The combined efforts of Screwie, Darlin', and new friend Marti Brewster (Raven-Symoné) aid Yankee in conquering his own self-doubt and infuse him with the self-confidence and strength to profoundly affect both his family and the entire baseball world. Produced by Christopher Reeve, this CGI animated presentation features a great cast of characters and voice talent, and an important message about the power of perseverance. Description

Ten-year-old baseball fanatic Yankee Irving (voiced by newcomer Jake T. Austin) is always the last one picked for sandlot baseball games. But when Babe Ruth's prized bat is stolen during the 1932 World Series, Yankee steps up to the plate to help retrieve it for his beloved idol. He embarks on a wild cross-country journey that teaches him the stuff real heroes are made of, and along the way, Yankee learns the importance of perseverance and the true meaning of friendship.

5 out of 5 stars Surprised by this movie..........2007-06-10

It was a lot better than I expected. I hadn't seen this at the theater, but my children really loved this. Though the star of the movie would've saved himself a lot of heartache and trouble if he'd delivered it to his dad, but then there would be no story!

A great movie for baseball fans and kids alike. Hopefully, my children will now understand who some of the great historic players are!

5 out of 5 stars If ya like baseball ...you'll love this film!.......2007-06-09

This little film is a little charmer. Thought provoking, endearing, totally wild and entertaining all mixed into one. If you like baseball at all, you'll have a blast... if you LOVE baseball, this film will touch you with the way it weaves history into the game! Great for kids, cool to watch with them and talk about the game! About the game that is and the game that was! There's a reason why it had such a brilliant cast and production team (I mean, c'mon - Christopher Reeve, Dana Reeve (a little gift they left behind), Rob Reiner, Whoopi Goldberg, Forest Whitaker, William H. Macy, Brian Dennehy, Mandy Patinkin, Joe Torre... !! Beautiful in it's simplicity... great characters...GREAT storytelling! Fun fun stuff!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-05-24

This was an excellent story with a moral. It was produced by Christopher and Dana Reeve and Dana's voice is in it.

4 out of 5 stars Great movie for all ages.......2007-05-12

We found this movie to be surprisingly funny, and entertaining. Younger children will enjoy it. It passed the "scardey cat" movie goers (our daughters) for not being too scarey, even though there is a bad guy. The talking bat and ball were very funny. It is hard to find movies that are acceptable for children, and this is one that we found to have a good moral story.

5 out of 5 stars Fun time for everyone.......2007-05-07

I found this movie enjoyable for every age. Awesome job by Christopher Reeves and company.

Richard Donner's 1978 epic about the Man of Steel showed how a film about a superhero could be a moving and romantic experience even for people who long ago gave up comic books. Beginning on the icy planet Krypton, the story follows the baby Kal-El, whose rocket ship lands in Smallville, Kansas. He is found there by a childless couple and raised as the shy Clark Kent (the young Kent is played by Jeff East). The film is perhaps most touching in these sequences, with expanses of wheat fields blowing in the wind and with a young man who can't figure out what part in destiny his great powers are meant to play. The second half, with Reeve taking over as Clark/Superman, is bustling, enchanting (the scene in which Superman flies girlfriend Lois Lane--played by Margot Kidder--through the night sky is great date material), and funny, thanks largely to Gene Hackman's sardonic portrayal of nemesis Lex Luthor. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

5 out of 5 stars Great Seller!.......2007-06-13

The movie was exactly as advertised, great price, and the delivery was much faster than I'm used to with online purchases.

5 out of 5 stars Superman is fantastic flying fun!.......2007-05-06

The best thing about this movie are the opening credits! When I saw this movie nearly 30 years ago I was awe struck at the opening. The movie is first rate with first rate performances by Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Margot Kidder and of course Christopher Reeve.I enjoyed Superman I and II but didn't really care for the two other Superman movies. Don't get me wrong..Christopher Reeve is a wonderful actor and we miss him but the last two didn't have much of a plot. Superman I was and still is good high flying fun for everyone!!

5 out of 5 stars It's the internet, it's Amazon . . . it's SUPERMAN THE MOVIE! dvd.......2007-04-18

WARNING! The Intergalactic Credits that "Superman: The Movie" & "Superman II" open with are waaaaaaayyyyyyyyyy toooooooo loooooooooong in spite of the beautiful orchestral score of John Williams (Jaws, Star Wars, Boston Pops)! That epic intro is more befitting of an over-the-top 3-hour 1940s Biblical epic, unless both Superman movies were combined into one geeky gratuitous leviathan (I don't mean to compare Superman to God but . . well, actually, he DOES seem quite godlike!). Regardless, "Superman: The Movie" is a glorious cinematic experience on this widescreen dvd I checked out from the Ann Arbor Public Library (in case you're a spy drafting a list of my library lendings for Homeland Security; to you also I recommend this dvd and God help you protect our great nation!). This fast paced adaptation of Siegal & Shuster's D.C. Comics icon is packed with thrills, chills, excitement, humor, drama, gorgeous visuals and stunning special effects, and it's all rated PG! You can watch it with your wife, girlfriend, mom, kids . . . everyone is happy! Christopher Reeves tops his father's TV portrayal (George Reeves) as the hero, Gene Hackman is is always on the brink of stealing the show as supervillian Lex Luthor, and Margot Kidder gives the most blood-curdling scream to Lois Lane you could ever hope to hear in a non-slasher film (the helicopter disaster is great! who can't relate to a fall-to-your-death scene?). With cameos by Marlon Brando (Jor-L, Superman's father), lil' rascal Jackie Cooper (Perry White of the Daily Planet), and Glen Ford (foster father) as well as a superb screenplay co-authored by Mario Puzo (The Godfather), this thing is SUPER DELUXE CINAMANIA! I HIGHLY recommend it! As for this copy: mine doesn't seem to have all the extras other reviewers wrote about. I guess the proliferation of editions demonstrates the popularity and longevity of this film . . .

4 out of 5 stars Very nice for an older film.......2007-04-11

I remember superman since I was a kid. It was huge back in its day. This definitely brought back memories - but I'll stick to the quality of the movie in terms of the HD version.
So I thought I would do it justice and watch it on my 1080p screen. I was not disappointed. For a film of its time, I think it looks fantastic in HD.
It will not have the clarity and sharpness of today's HD films, but seriously this movie is as old as I am, and back then a Sony Trinitron was the best you could have.

I think its worth the money and definitely worth having in your HD collection.

5 out of 5 stars The ultimate Superman.......2007-04-07

I don't know why it took me so long to buy this film. I picked it up at the video store last week, brought it home, and I've been watching it every day since then! I first saw the film in 1978, when everyone was excited about seeing a film about the mythical superhero (before we all became jaded by endless superhero films). I remember being surprised by Margot Kidder's performance as Lois Lane; I was a child then, and I had always thought that Lois was supposed to be a very passive character, not an assertive, hard-working woman. Kidder changed that for me.

This film, regardless of the input of many talented artists, will always and indelibly belong to the late Christopher Reeve. It makes my heart ache to see him, young, strong, beautiful, and able-bodied. I had forgotten how good he really was; he's so good, you can easily miss the little subtleties he brings to his characterization. It was his first starring role, and he holds his own effortlessly even against such heavyweights as Brando and Hackman. He manages to be believably self-effacing and klutzy as Clark Kent, and believably strong and moral as Superman - NOT an easy task, by any means.

I believed that he would walk again, after his tragic accident. Then we suffered the bitter, heartbreaking loss first of Christopher Reeve, then of his incredibly strong wife, Dana. Now, THAT is a story worth telling.

This is the single best casting job ever performed in Hollywood, and nobody knew, at the time, how perfect or compelling it would be. Reeve had less than two decades of able-bodied life ahead of him; he would be gone from us before thirty years had passed. He didn't just play the part of Superman; he WAS Superman, with a strength, courage, and determination that even the Man of Steel didn't possess.

You are sorely missed, Mr. Reeve/Superman.

1 out of 5 stars Possibly Worst DVD Set Production EVER!.......2007-06-05

And not because of the content of the DVDs. The movies themselves are fine; although deep down inside everyone was a little disappointed in Superman Returns. I have purchased and exchanged this set 3 TIMES! First time, not all of the DVDs were functional. Second time, DVDs' special features fiasco. Third time, the DVDs' case was broken and the discs were loose and got scratched. Tired of this, I finally kept the set that I had on hand. However, it's worth noting that the DVDs were out of order in the case, which makes some peoples' complaints about receiving duplicate discs and missing others more plausible.
How could Warner Bros. mess this up so badly? It's Superman for crying out loud!! He is one of their flagship franchises! I have hundreds of DVDs and have never experienced this much difficulty in finding a quality copy of a boxed set. I will think long and hard before buying any more DVD sets from Warner Bros.

1 out of 5 stars Worse than George Lucas.......2007-06-05

So, Warner Bros. sells a defective product, ignores its customers' complaints, then expects us all to pay another $100+ for a "No Kidding, This Time We're SURE It'll Work" edition of a set we already bought? Thanks, but no thanks, Bullwinkle. Wow, how dumb you must believe we are...

This is a gold mine for all Superman fans everywhere. Despite the problems this set has been plagued with, it was well worth the wait. Yes, $75 is a bit painful, but think about it this way, you're only paying a little over $5 each per single disc. You won't get a deal like that anywhere.

And the content is top-notch. Reacquaint yourself with a young Christopher Reeve in his heyday, as he bumbles as Clark Kent, yet soars as The Man Of Steel. I had almost forgotten just how iconic these films were. My brother and I saw the first movie waaaaaay back in 1978 (that tells you how old I am), and needless to say, it left an indelible impression on us. But it's only now where I can appreciate it on a different level. Like George Reeves before him, Christopher Reeve had a charm about him which spoke volumes. You couldn't have found a better Superman if you tried (notice the nearly 20-year span in between the two actors). Not just anybody could play this character, but both men ran, I mean, flew away with him, and defined their careers.

And these films have never looked better. All 17 of the Fleischer brothers cartoons from the early '40's are included within this set, and let me tell you, you will cry tears of joy at the beautiful restoration Warner Bros. did on these. (These put the Bosko Video releases to shame. And those were very well done). Other than a few surface scratches, they haven't looked this good since they were originally released. (I'm not THAT old, but I can only imagine the sight of them back then, since they were the first filmed representation of Superman).

I am very well pleased with mine. This whole collection is pure gold. Sadly, for some of this collection's buyers, its become pure Kryptonite. Hopefully everyone will work their problems out, sit back and reconnect with an old friend. You'll forget all about all the money you spent.

Description

After Superman: The Movie's epic storytelling and Superman II's awesome battles, how could the first two hits be topped? In Superman III, meet Gus Gorman (Richard Pryor), a half-witted computer programming natural. For him a keyboard is a weapon - and Superman faces the microelectronic menace of his life. Christopher Reeve reprises his most beloved role, deepening his character's human side as Clark Kent reunites with old flame Lana Lang (Annette O'Toole) at a Smallville High class reunion. And when Superman becomes his own worst enemy after Kryptonite exposure, Reeve pulls off both roles with dazzling skill. Incredible visual effects abound - but above all it has heart, heroism and high-flying humor. All in superabundance.

3 out of 5 stars My First Superman Film!.......2007-02-15

I first saw this when I was just a kid, My earliest memory of Superman is from this film.(At the begining with the car filling with water and superman rescues the guy trapped inside)
Even though I know this film compared to the previous 2 films is very poor!
I still love it.
And this deluxe version really improves on the crappy release we got back in 2001.
A must have for any Superman fan and the last decent(ish) Christopher Reeve Superman before everything went down the plug hole in the 4th film.

1 out of 5 stars I wanted to give it no stars, but it wouln't let me.......2007-01-21

This is THE worst Superman film ever, it might even be the worst movie ever made!!!! If you want a good superman film DVD collection like I have, here's a list:
Superman: The Movie 4-Disk set
Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut
Superman Returns 2-Disk set
Unfortunatly you get less movies this way, but they're makind a sequal so hopefully it'll be good, however you'll have to wait unyl 2009, so my advice, watch Superman cartoons, read Superman comics, and all that other stuff, then 2009 will be here before you know it! Just don't watch this (and don't watch IV either.)

5 out of 5 stars SuperGREAT.......2007-01-11

Before writing this review, I viewed the others on this page and I am afraid that my view differs greatly from all but one of theirs. When I first saw this movie I was about 4 or 5 and found it to be fun and exciting. In experiencing these four films on DVD in a widscreen movie format as an adult I think Superman 1 through 3 are equally fantastic. What I liked about Superman 3 is precisely what most everyone else seemed to dislike, the lighter more humorous approuch to the story. I thought it was a nice change from the first two films which were very serious, excellent, but serious. It was in the same vain as Star Trek 4 The voyage Home, which was very light, humourous and adventurous. I thought it was a fitting change of pace from the first three, which delt with some very heavy issues as did the first two Superman Films. The new villain in this film was also a nice change, luther had already appeared in the first two, so having superman face off with someone unkown to him was great. I absolutely loved Richard Pryor in this, he was just so funny and his wonderful comic style helped bring a lighter air to this movie. I Agree with the other reviewers that Richard Donner is an excellent director and should not have been replaced, not to take anything way from Mr. Lester who I thought did a great job with Superman 3. I appreacated all of the opinions I read, as a superman fan who takes the quality of the films seriously, it is good to see that there are others as protective of the super film legacy as I.

Thanks for a great Movie Mr. Reeve and Warner Brothers

2 out of 5 stars Superman vs. A.I........2007-01-06

In "Superman III" Superman (Chrisopher Reeve) must battle misguided computer Gus (Richard Pryor) and truelly evil billionaire Ross Webster who use a new kind of artificial intelligence to gain control of the world's oil supply. Meanwhile Clark is back in Smallville romancing young mother and former childhood sweetheart Lana Lang (Annette O'Toole, who ironically plays Martha Kent in "Smallville" TV show).

This is the point in the series when the producers stopped taking Superman seriously. Richard Lester has a reputation in slapstick comedy, and that's where he should have stayed. This movie is too jokey and funny for it's own good. Not that it's all bad, the living computer was a good idea, and I think it was originally supposed to be regular Superman villain Brainiac. And twin Superman was also good, with shades of Bizaro. Too bad they didn't use those villains instead of the Richard Pryor, who is terminally miscast as a supervillian. When Gene Hackman refused to reappear as Lex Luthor they gave the part to Robert Vaughn, not a bad idea, just not right. The battle at the end with the zombie robot was a horrible idea, a scene that is more likely to scare kids than entertain them.

The good things is the sweet relationship between Clark and Lana. It has always been known (even before the show) that Clark still holds a torch for Lana, and this really concretes the idea. Also you can see that while Clark knows the need for Superman, he is also a little tired of his super alter ego, and the twin fight of Clark and Superman is a good example of the internal struggle, actually well done, I must give Lester credit for that much.

Not bad, but the "Superman"series has fallen a long way since "Superman II".

5 out of 5 stars Best Superman movie!.......2006-12-19

This is by far my most favorite superman movie. I've been waiting for 16 years for this "Making of Superman 3" to go on sale officially. I bought this dvd from amazon as soon as it got out and I don't regret it. The picture Quality of the main film seems better on this deluxe edition and the quality of picture on the documentary is superb. In additional scenes there is actually just one scene involving superman, and all the others revolve around richard pryor. Still for any Superman 3 fan this dvd is obligatory.

Description

This hilariously sexy, all-star comedy promises to be an entertaining treat you're sure to love! Featuring some of today's biggest comedy favorites, including Carol Burnett (TV's THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW), John Ritter (BAD SANTA), Michael Caine (THE CIDER HOUSE RULES), and Christopher Reeve (SUPERMAN) -- NOISES OFF! is an outrageously funny look at the love, lies, and deceit that take place behind the scenes as a group of ridiculously inept stage actors rehearse a Broadway-bound play! Just when members of this chaotic cast finally get their performances right, everything starts going wrong!

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars British silliness at its best.......2007-05-13

A dysfunctional bunch of actors tries to deal with a lame script; starting at the final dress rehearsal, the premiere, and several months later on the tour. The more they do the play, the worse their interpersonal problems become. It's all in fun, enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Applause! Applause!!.......2007-04-23

Although I enjoyed it immensely the first time, this hysterical showbiz farce, got funnier with each viewing. It is also a good idea to watch it at least once with the subtitles on, since the dialogue is extremely fast paced. The the actors are delightful. Michael Caine plays the two-timing director with his usual perfection, and Carol Burnett plays the temperamental leading lady with her usual panache. Both John Ritter and Christopher Reeve are very funny, the former as the neurotic leading man and the latter as a dim-witted method actor who has to have his off-stage beat for removing a box of groceries explained to him. Marylu Henner and Nicolette Sheridan are excellent in their supporting roles, as is Denholm Elliott, a has-been actor who hides bottles of whisky in convenient cubby-holes back stage. I especially enjoyed Mark Linn Baker who plays the beleaguered stage manager.

Peter Bogdonovich's direction as well as his actors' split-second timing makes this farce a real treat. Doors open and close, plates of sardines get passed back and forth, props get mislaid, and everything goes exactly right--before it goes awfully wrong.

And therein lies the fun!

5 out of 5 stars A Hidden Gem.......2007-04-12

Hardly anyone I've ever spoken to has heard of this movie, which is unusual considering the caliber of the cast including: Michael Caine, Christopher Reeves, Carol Burnett, etc. This movie is one of my all time favorites. The perfect movie to curl up on the couch and watch on a rainy day. It's slap stick at its best. If you haven't seen it yet, I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Noises Off.......2007-03-14

This is a really funny movie! Top stars have been amassed with an awesome script. Lots of great physical humor. While many pants are dropped and much underwear seen, with the exception of a few vulgarities, it's a pretty clean film. A must see for theatre buffs who like a behind the scenes view.

5 out of 5 stars This is my favorite moive of all time.......2007-01-25

"Now I know what God felt like when he sat out there in the darkness creating the world . . . very pleased he'd taken his valium" (Lloyd - played by Michael Caine).

I found this movie sitting on a shelf collecting dust in an old video store. I rented it once and was hooked. The casting is superb and the material is hilarious. It helps if you like British humor as this movie is based on a British play of the same name.

It all centers on the set of a new "sex farce", showing the behind the scenes antics of the cast and crew (though mostly cast). Love triangles, jealousy, and payback all come into play. As the cast moves from rehearsing the show to performing it, things fall apart back stage - which is reflected in their performance on stage as the play within the movie falls apart as well.

The physical comedy, particularly by the able John Ritter, is wonderful, and Carol Burnette does a wonderful job as Dotty, the forgetful onstage housekeeper. What really makes this movie work is the chemistry between the characters - they work so smoothly together, it's like they've been there for years.

After seeing the movie more than a dozen times, I found it was playing in my area at a local playhouse. I've since seen the play numerous times (and I'm seeing it again in three days). It's as funny (if not funnier) than the movie, which was hard to beat. The movie director made minor changes - like moving the location of the play within the play to America instead of Europe and changing the play Lloyd was working on from Richard III to Hamlet. All to appeal more to the American audience. Other than that, they stuck very close to the original script and do tremendous justice to it.

If you don't enjoy dry wit and physical comedy, don't see this movie, you won't enjoy it at all. But if you like senseless romps, sticky triangles, and silly antics, then buy or rent Noises Off - you won't be disappointed.

Amazon.com essential video

This excellent film is probably best described as subtle elegance. Framed in the present, the movie deals with the lives inside an English country home just prior to World War II. Reunited with the filmmakers from <I>Howards End</I> are Emma Thompson as Miss Kenton, the head housekeeper, and Anthony Hopkins as Stevens, the impeccable butler. The bittersweet story centers on Stevens and his dedication to his master, Lord Darlington (a suitably officious and slyly pompous James Fox). Stevens summarizes: "I don't believe a man can consider himself fully content until he has done all he can to be of service to his employer." Enveloping Stevens's world are the pending war with Germany, Darlington's horribly misguided interests in said war, and, most effectively, his relationship with Miss Kenton. Stevens is the very essence of repression, but as played by Hopkins he is neither piteous nor self-righteous. Like his master, Stevens becomes misguided in his loyalties, although his is an emotional deprivation, possibly condemning him to lifelong regret. There's so much going on in this film, and yet the action is skillfully depicted through understanding and knowing glances, through emotions expressed only through eye contact. Like other Merchant-Ivory-Ruth Prawer Jhabvala collaborations, this film is sumptuous to look at, capturing the period effectively and affectingly. Jhabvala respectfully adapts from the Kazuo Ishiguro novel. Excellent in supporting roles are Christopher Reeve, Ben Chaplin, and Hugh Grant. <I>--N.F. Mendoza</I>

5 out of 5 stars "Z. Hayes" took the review right out of my minds eye :).......2007-06-19

Z hayes "myrradine" below kind of nailed the coffin shut on reviews for this tremendous work of exceptional purity. I HIGHLY disagree with anyone that thinks the screenplay was not keeping true to the book. In fact, as "myrradine" states below, it's even better than the original work. I concur.

This truly shows what one can masterfully do with a book. Take an exceptional director like Merchant Ivory, with the "raw" talent of Hopkins and the exceptional pure realism of someone like gorgeous Emma Thompson, and you have what movie making should be about: timely, percise, flowing and elequont.

I can clearly see how many people would find this very dull and boring, but there are very few films that can utterly show you the pinnacle of the craft. Remains of the Day is clearly that type of movie.

Without a doubt five stars in every direction.

(ok so I lied z. hayes, I did one anyway) :)

5 out of 5 stars PERFECT in every way.......2007-05-24

Have just become a fan of Merchant Ivory films and think this must be their best. Excellent performances by everyone in the film, excellent cinema photography, excellent screenplay. Have been watching it over and over and over and still am not bored.

4 out of 5 stars Thought Provoking.......2007-05-13

This movie has a great message. It shows, how loyalty, to a profession, nullifies and does not allow for expression of any emotional involvement with others, whether that may be a family member or possible romantic interest. It also shows, that one has to live with the choices one makes. Hopkins, again, gives a star performance as Stevens, the British butler. To me, it was sad to see how a "fanatic" devotion to his work, did not leave any room for him to experience love.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling performances by Hopkins and Thompson.......2007-05-12

Kazuo Ishiguro's The Remains of the Day was a masterpiece, and yet this movie adaptation is not only faithful to the novel, but in my opinion outshines the book. One reason is the excellent casting. Sir Anthony Hopkins plays the by-the-book butler whose icy demeanor actually belies a fondness and even love for his efficient and charming housekeeper, played excellently by Emma Thompson. His insistence on decorum and adherence to the politics of the houselhold cause him to refrain from ever proclaiming his true feelings for his housekeeper, and so also goes his chance of personal happiness. Fast forward years later, and the aging Hopkins now has a new master, an American [played by Christopher Reeve]...he has the opportunity of engaging a new housekeeper, and thinks of his old housekeeper...but things are not as easy as he believes...and whether he gets to rectify his past mistakes makes up the rest of the story. A well-told tale of love lost, and also a good movie that provides a glimpse of politics in England during a time when Germany was rising in power.

4 out of 5 stars Entertainment and a Little Slice of History.......2007-03-19

See pre-WWII England through the eyes of dedicated household servants. This is one of the finest performances of all involved, especially Christopher Reeve, who brings a touch of America to a staid English manor. A tale of servitude, the shaping of history, faithfulness to cause and service, "The Remains of the Day" is at heart the inexhaustable yearning for love lost.

The law of diminishing returns: It's the law--obey it! Someone should have posted that sign on the set of this, the third sequel to the film based on the DC Comics superhero. The "IV" in the title refers to medical supplies needed to resuscitate this anemic retread. This one reportedly was a pet project of actor Christopher Reeve, whose career seemed to flounder whenever he tried a role minus the blue underwear and red cape. Before agreeing to don the suit one more time, he insisted on a script that preached nuclear disarmament. So, in this film, Superman rounds up all the missiles and warheads and flings them into outer space. Which still leaves him to contend with Lex Luthor, who has a secret weapon: Nuclear Man. Yawn. Having pushed the envelope of special effects in the first film, it seemed as if the filmmakers simply stopped trying with this one. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>

Description

Christopher Reeve not only dons the title hero's cape for the fourth time but also helped develop the movie's provocative theme: nuclear disarmament. "For me, it's the most personal of the entire series," Reeve said. "It directly reflects what Superman should be, and should be doing." Superman does a lot this time around. To make the world safe for nuclear arms merchants, Lex Luthor (Gene Hackman) creates a new being to challenge the Man of Steel: the radiation-charged Nuclear Man (Mark Pillow). The two foes clash in an explosive extravaganza that sees Superman save the Statue of Liberty, plug a volcanic eruption of Mount Etna and rebuild the demolished Great Wall of China. Your quest for excitement is over!

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Poor film, Lots of deleted scenes!.......2007-06-06

Even though this is the silliest superman sequel, for a true and loyal superman fan this dvd is a must-have. Of all the recently released superman deluxe editions this one has the most deleted scenes of all. You get to see half an hour of scenes never seen before, some of which are pretty good. I like the extended flying scene and a typical Clark Kent's morning. The alternate version of Nuclear Guy looks very ugly and dumb. Thank God Mark Pillow ended playing it in the final cut. There are more fight scenes that were deleted and overall the studios really packed a good deluxe edition.

2 out of 5 stars The Quest for CHEESE.......2007-04-23

I recently bought the Superman DVD box set. I can't remember ever watching this sequel.. and WOW is this BAD! The story would make a mediocre comic book, which this movie reminded me of.. Nuclear Man? I can say the idea is cool.. But the way in which this character is created is way absurd. Nuclear dude and Stupidman have a most ridiculous fight on the moon which is half bar room saloon stuff to half the 3 Stooges (Nuke dude hammers Superman into the moon like a golf tee)

When Nukeman kidnaps the girl Hemingway and flies her into space was way beyond STUPIDO! Superman fights Nucleardude and gets Hemingway and flies her back to Earth and comes back to fight Nukenerd more without any explanation how Hemingway didn't explode on re-entry or how she was breathing in space.

Most interesting about this DVD is the deleted scenes. These incredibly are some of the best extras on any DVD I seen. They show a complete sub-story of whom I assume is Bizarro. When Lex steals Superman's hair, I thought he would make a crude clone of Superman i.e. Bizarro. But no we get a badly conceived Nuclear Man. The deleted clips show a completely deleted idea of the creation of Bizarro. The actor of Bizarro is over-doing it and played out as a comic interlude. Even if he were not deleted he is killed off quickly as plot device to get to Nuclear Man. Unfortunate they made so many mistakes with Bizarro since the entire movie should have been about him, preferably played out a tad more seriously. The complications of Superman dealing with his evil clone, make for a better movie than the cheesy save the world from nuclear war story.

The special effects are SO BAD, I can see the ropes when Superman flies, and cutouts of the moon look like bad Photoshop. The parts when Superman and Lois fly all over the world- might be the cheesiest scenes in movie history.

2 out of 5 stars Boggles the mind.......2007-02-05

1987's "Superman IV" made an attempt to return to the tradition of the first two Superman films, and steered away from the awful "Superman III," which was the most disappointing sequel in the history of film. But while it suceeded there, somewhat, it was actually more ludicrous than III in other ways. At least III didn't have Earth humans breathing on their own in space. Since this movie wasn't supposed to be a spoof, why would they just sit back and let this film be released with humans breathing in space? What were they thinking when they filmed that scene? Let alone when they allowed it to be released that way. You even see filmmakers today doing similiar things with today's movies. This is the most mind-boggling thing.

1 out of 5 stars Superman IV: The Craps for Pee.......2007-01-21

I found 3 reasons to hate this movie
3. You can't watch Superman Returns if you watch this.
2. Nuclear Man, they had Bizzaro in the movie but they replaced him with a blond haired weirdo that never even appered in the comic adaption.
and 1. Weak plot, it sounded like a good plot for a 60's Batman movie sequal (I still want a DVD release of the TV show though) but not for a Superman movie. Sorry Christopher Reeve (He made the Plot) it's just too campy for even Adam West's Batman.
Though I can't wait until the NEW Superman Movie for 2009, do NOT watch this movie.

1 out of 5 stars Depressing end to the Chris Reeve Superman films.......2007-01-16

Superman 4 was conceived by Chris Reeve as a great return to the orignal quality of the first 2 and hopefully to get the sour taste out of everyone's mouth's of Superman 3. What was delivered is a movie in shambles filled with plot holes galore and literally a fun house of 2nd rate special effects. The budget for Superman 4 was slashed in half by the now non-existant Golan Globus and the effects in this film are actually worse than what you saw in Superman the movie even though it was released 9 years prior to Superman 4. The plot is terrible Chris Reeve conceived a story about Superman saving the world from nuclear war by disarming the planet. Not a bad idea but the screenwriters did an awful job building upon that concept. The commentary by Mark Rosenthal one of the screenwriters is worth a listen because he is honest about just how awful the film is and tries to defend very little about just how lousy the production of the film was. Overall lousy movie and a tragic end to Chris Reeve's legendary portrayal of the Man Of Steel.

Description

"I thought the original Superman was terrific entertainment," the Chicago Sun-Times' Roger Ebert wrote, "and so I was a little startled to discover that I liked Superman II even more." Unwittingly released from Phantom Zone imprisonment, three super-powered Kryptonian criminals (Terence Stamp, Sarah Douglas and Jack O'Halloran) plan to enslave Earth - just when Superman (Christopher Reeve) decides to show a more romantic side to Lois Lane (Margot Kidder). Gene Hackman (as Lex Luthor) also returns from the first film and with a top supporting cast, witty Richard Lester direction and visuals that astound and delight, Superman II saves the day any day you watch it!

5 out of 5 stars Very powerful!.......2007-06-08

Usually only the first movie in a series of movies with the same title is the best, but thhis is not the case with superman 2. I thought that this was the best superman film that Christopher Reve was in. I liked the confrontation with the kryptonion outlaws and all the action sequences displaying the kind of power that the man of steel has. This film is a keeper.

2 out of 5 stars Not the ABC-TV Version!.......2007-03-31

I was disappointed when I bought this version, when I recorded the Superman 2 version on ABC way back in the late 80's. VHS tapes don't last, so I wanted the UNCUT version of Superman 2 on DVD. I wasted my money.

Vital scenes are cut from the DVD:
1) Superman saves the boy at Niagra Falls. He goes back to the hot dog stand and meet up with Lois, changes back to Clark Kent and walks away from the hot dog stand with a proud and humourous smile on his face (knowing that he saved the boy).
2) Flying to Paris.....and it shows him passing the Concorde in the sky.
3) A prison scene with Lex and Otis, about Otis going "pssh", which Otis mentions he had wished before they left the cell, even though it means something else. Funny scene.
4) Miss Teschmacher needed to go to the bathroom at the Fortress of Solitude, where she says she thinks she found it. And Lex says, "she found it."
5) And finally, the ending where Superman defeats the 3 supervillains, Lex shows more interest in befriending Superman (which he doesn't), the cops show up at the Fortress to arrest Lex, and Superman destroys the Fortress Of Solitude.

There's more from the ABC version, but too difficult to explain.

Just to say, the Lester cut wasn't worth the price! I don't know about the Donner version, but the DVD creators destroyed this movie....and who knew a TV version would be so much better!

4 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD.......2007-02-06

WELL I DON'T UNDERSTAND THE END HOW EVERYTHING GET BACK TO NORMAL EVEN THOUGH THE TOWN HAS BEEN DESTROY OTHERWISE I LOVE THIS MOVIE EVERYTHING IS PERFECT

5 out of 5 stars Superman II : Richard Lester's version is better!.......2007-01-08

Superman II: Richard Lester's version is better! I have sen both the original Theatrical cut version and the Superman II:Richard Donner cut, But I must say that Richard Lester version won me over. Richard Lester's Superman II is more entertaining and enjoyable to watch. Richard Lester's Superman II is very funny and you can see his sense of humor in this film. I think Theatrical cut is better! There is a more coherent story! Superman at the begining goes to Paris to save Lois Lane and th people of France from a highgergen bomb is better idea that Lois Lane falling out of window of the Daily Planet to prove Clark Kent is Superman. The Niagra Falls scene were Lois Lane jumps into the water and Clark Kent is under pressure to reveal his secret is much beter scene than what Rchard Donner had done with his movie. Also, I love the fight scene in the Fortress of Solitude near the end and that scene was missing in the Richard Donner cut. In Richard Lester's Superman II, Superman reveals more of his super powers that he never used in the comic books. Superman II: Theatrical Cut deserves an A+ and five stars******

1 out of 5 stars From what I can tell, not so special.......2006-12-03

Just to be clear, the actual movie I'd rate a 4. It's the idea that this edition is supposed to be "special" that I'm rating so low.

It seems that the actual movie presented here is the same theatrical version that I bought for $4 back when "Superman Returns" hit the theaters, instead on the extended version shown on TV back in the 80s. I don't understand why the bonus material is worth an extra $15 more than the movie alone is apparently worth.

If I'm wrong, and it is the extended version, then the packaging is poor for failing to say as much (I would certainly get it if I could be certain it was the extended version I remember.) Based on at least one reviewer here, I'm betting I'm right, though.

THIS WAS ONE OF THE BEST GIFTS THAT SUPERMAN FAN COULD EVER GET. I LOVE IT . THANK YOU

3 out of 5 stars There's still a problem even with replacement disc.......2007-04-23

As many already know Warner set up an exchange program for the first disc in this box set. It seems the origianl theatrical 2.0 (Dolby Surround) mix was not correct but instead a 2.0 verison of the new 5.1. There are many differences between this one and the original 2.0 theatrical one released to theatres upon release. Warner's exchange program was meant to replace those discs with new and corrected ones. After waiting nearly 3 months I was forced to call WB and question where mine was. It was then sent to me overnight. But when it arrived I found the 2.0 mix (simply labled ENGLISH) is defective. In Dolby Surround 2.0 all dialog is meant to be in the center channel. Insead this release has it coming from all speakers, and if you have a 6.1 or 7.1 set-up it get really annoying with an echo. If you need to test your disc go to a scene where there is more dialog and no music and a low amount of sound effects like when Lois interviews Superman. Then compare the way is sounds with SUPERMAN III and SUPERMAN IV, which are both 2.0 Dolby Surround. You will see what I mean. It's a shame that WB has let this sloppy mistake happen - it should be fixed. Since this is a replacement disc I would imagine its the same version in the re-release of the Silver Box Set as well - even in the SUPERMAN:THE MOVIE sold on its own. I've been reviewing film professionally and have been a consultant for home video for 20 years and haven't seen a mistake like this in a long time. I tried to connact Warners several times but no one has returned my calls in the past month. Even the Home theater fourm deleted my postings on this. Having interviewed the film's producer several times I know this soundtrack shouldn't be like this. This film is considered a classic and should have been given better treatment.

5 out of 5 stars Christopher Reeve Superman Collection.......2007-04-11

Great movies, perfect for a rainy weekend. Brings back great memories of a more relaxed time and a wonderful man.

3 out of 5 stars Great movies...POOR presentation.......2007-02-19

Where do i begin? If you don't really want to own the new Superman movie, but just want all the classic Christopher Reeve films, you wuld think this is the best way to do it, right? I mean, it is called the CHRISTOPHER REEVE COLLECTION, isn't it? Yeah, well, you'd be wrong. Why? Read on...

There is a lot of extra content on this box set that is NOT from the Christopher Reeve movies: 17 old cartoons, the 1951 movie with George Reeves, a featurette on the Fleisher Superman....all completely unnecessary. Now, i'm not dissing this content for being present.... i'm dissing this content because this NON-CHRISTOPHER REEVE material is included AT THE EXPENSE OF OTHER GENUINE CHRISTOPHER REEVE CONTENT!

Let's see what is NOT included in this collection:
1) Superman II: Richard Donner cut
2) Superman II: Restoring The Vision featurette
3) Superman II: Richard Donner's commentary
4) You Will Believe: The Cinematic Saga of Superman (includes many details on the production of all 4 Reeve classics)
5) Look, Up In The Sky: The Amazing Story Of Superman

All of the above material contains extensive Christopher Reeve content. Unfortunately, in the "Christopher Reeve Collection," you get plenty of non-Reeve content to take up all the space of what could have been included. I mean, c'mon...17 Superman cartoons? That much material could have been an entire separate DVD release! The George Reeves movie could have been released as a bonus with the old TV show DVD sets.

Well, there is some good news: You CAN get all the above material on the ULTIMATE Superman Collection. Unfortunately, the packaging is flawed. The outer tin often arrives damaged, the inner disc holders break easily, and again, you pay for a lot of things you may not want...such as Superman Returns (which doesn't contain the bonus content you can only get on the Circuit City version). Oh yeah, and not to mention, two of the discs in the Ultimate Edition are wrong, and have to be replaced, AND it's almost impossible to find new, because it's out-of-print! Even if Warner fixes their disc problems with this set, and re-prints it, i'm sure the layout will still be just as poor.

The individual releases of Superman: The Movie & Superman II are the same way. Bonus un-related content, at the expense of much more Christopher Reeve content.

I find this totally ridiculous that they released these movies this way. I guess if you really want them though, THIS SET is certainly the way to go. This set is the same as you would buy them individually, in the same format/cases/layout only at a cheaper price. Then pick up the Richard Donner cut of Superman II separately. I'm going to see if i can download the missing Cinematic Saga of Superman content.

4 out of 5 stars Super Superman Collection.......2007-01-18

Frankly I was not expecting a fantastic collection, technically, as most of the older Superman releases are pre Home Theatre time. However, the transfers were found to be quite good and we had no issue while playing them on multi-channel. With Sci-Fi genre it's actually important you see!

However, IF the viewers compare the audio/video quality of this collection with the latest release (Superman Returns), then they'd definitely be disappointed! As the latest one is simply loaded!

I personally feel that a booklet, paying tribute to Reeve, who had such a terrible end in his real life, must be included! Life's not been fair to him, but the producers can try to be!
