Robin Williams in his fuzzy, sensitive mode with bittersweet touches plays a musician in a Russian circus who gets talked into defecting by a pal and does so (though the pal bails on him at the last minute)--in the middle of Bloomingdale's. A great concept, to be sure, but writer-director Paul Mazursky doesn't seem to know where to go from there. Williams winds up living in the same kind of poverty that he did in Russia, casting about for a way to make a living while both wallowing and drowning in the sudden tidal wave of freedom. Mazursky wants to make a point about how little we appreciate what we have, but he fails to entertain in the process--or at least to engage in a consistent way. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>
Customer Reviews:
Robin Williams at his finest!.......2007-06-07
I don't always agree with Robin Williams' standup humor but IMAO, he is a consumate actor bordering on dramatic and comedic genius. In this film he convincingly potrays a Russian circus musician that follows thru the dreams of his close friend by defecting to America.
What strikes in my mind about this film is when his girlfriend and many immigrants are granted U.S. citizenship. With the current state of today's political correctness, the judge's words still ring true when she states "no longer will you be a hyphenated American". What a delightful statement for all Americans.
A Forgotten Gem of Robin Williams.......2006-02-23
One of Robin Williams Early works and Sadly a Forgotten Gem of him. Sometimes Sad, Sometimes Funny as can be it showed his range and abilities even then. He Plays a Russian Circus Musician Tasked to keep an Eye on his friend who has made "Noises" about defecting when the Circus Travels to NYC. Don't want to ruin the Story or Surprises (If you are surprised) but this is a wonderful Story that will take you from Sad to Happy to Laughing and back again.
If you liked Dead Poets Society you will LOVE this.
a really good film ............2005-11-24
It is a good American movie about a Russian emigrant in NYC. Most of the viewers praise Robin Williams. Indeed, he plays very well the character of the Russian musician and there is no doubt - he is a great actor. But in this film, you have got a very rare chance to see the greatest Russian comedian Savely Kramarov (staring as head KGB man ). He died from cancer ten years ago in California. But his art and his films are still alive. Every film in which he took a part was automatically a hit in Soviet times. The tickets were sold out at cinemas and streets were empty during TV-broadcasts of his films. In "Moscow on the Hudson" he created a funny and grotesque image of KGB man (as he did it again in the film "RED HEAT" directed by Walter Hill) and I was enjoying watching his work there. It reminds me his best Russian films. I am sure you will appreciate it too.
The film is not perfect of course. Some stereotypes about Russia are implemented (such as the refrigerator full of vodka instead of food) Robin Willams struggles to speak "bad English" and has it hard to pronounce Russian words properly. But despite these small problems in showing life in Russia, the film gives a very authentic picture of the "Big Apple" and it is really good one.
Would give it ten stars if I could.......2005-11-16
While I absolutely love this movie, it, like any work of art, has flaws. Now, that said, I didn't see this movie when it first came out. I didn't see it until literally 20 years later! It still holds up well, but I was amazed at the blatant sterotyping that occurred in the film. The thing is, it happens with everyone from African-Americans to Russians, and even to WASPS. So I guess that cancels the thing out in a way.
This is a very touching movie and Robin Williams is probably at his best--and this is hard to do as he never bombs. Here's one actor who should be given more awards and credits for his acting ability--and this in addition to him being the world's greatest comic, no less!
Strangely, aside for my aforementioned comments on sterotyping, the movie does not seem dated--aside from a few glimpses of the World Trade Centers in the background, and it is a wonderful portrait of NYC. Really, I'm amazed this isn't more watched than it is. I highly, highly recommend this charming and enlightening film.
Freedom isn't free and other things to think about .................2005-09-07
For many years, I counted Moscow on the Hudson as my favorite film and if you like to be mildy entertained while considering what it means to be free in the USA, you may also love this thoughtful comedy. This was the first film that broke whatever box folks might have been trying to put Robin Williams in (after Mork and Mindy) and added Actor with a capital A to the public perception of him (at least for those who had the chance to see Moscow).
Among my favorite lines in the film is the disenchanted emigree played by Robin in a blue moment saying "When I was in Russia, I loved my misery, because it was mine." I think of this when I meet people whose eyes are closed to how precious our freedom is and the cost we must pay to learn to respect and treasure it.
There are many great scenes worth the wait, such as the final statement scene in the diner where other Russians who have learned how to deal with freedom, set the little Russian straight.
This is not an action filled or laugh filled romp. It is a film that requires a little patience and reflection, but an illumination to those with an open mind. Bravo Mazursky and Williams!

Cal (Billy Crudup) is a handsome, hard-drinking guy driving across the country with no particular destination in mind--but this is no romantic road trip. Cal has abandoned his wife and child and is running from a misery he can't even articulate; his encounters with other lonely people in bars and airports only render him more confused, while his inviting good looks routinely get him into trouble. <I>World Traveler</I> delves into the heart of a certain American grief and rootlessness, one that corresponds to the vast open space of the country itself. The movie doesn't explain itself, but the nuanced script and direction by Bart Freundlich (<I>The Myth of Fingerprints</I>) and superb performances by Crudup, Julianne Moore, James LeGros, David Keith, Karen Allen, Mary McCormack, and others make <I>World Traveler</I> completely compelling. A subtle but deeply felt movie, akin to 1970s character portraits like <I>Five Easy Pieces</I>. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Outstanding Flick. Don't let them fool you........2006-08-06
I watched it last night. Just to see what others thought, I
looked here on Amazon to see the reviews. Several hit it on the head, but a couple of the "WORST movie" and "BORING" comments were clear flags these people did not watch the movie, or perhaps were incapable of interpretting the relatively simple
plot.
The most annoying red flag was put up by a reviewer who enlightened us with how they didn't like the movie because the
character was "self centered".
I won't bother to explain that this is a fictional character, and that they are not written to become your "buddy", but to
describe a character that has flaws. Texture gives the film life, so its critical to remember you aren't watching movie characters to find your new bestest friend. sheesh.
Outstanding movie about a fairly disturbing scenario. Great
soundtrack, wonderful performances. A slice out of "Cal's" life that left open minded viewers wondering what the next day would bring him.
Not suitable for anyone to watch.......2006-08-06
A guy runs away from home on his son's 3rd birthday. Seeming to traveling aimlessly on I 80 west he drinks and plays around a lot. He's at a bar whining about waking up and seeing the same face everyday. Well, Schmuck, if that's not what you wanted you shouldn't have married! I found this self-centered creep annoying. Even when the trip ends with him confronting his runaway dad and finds closure I couldn't care less and I doubt if many viewers of this film cared what happened to him.
Good Movie. Great Soundtrack........2006-04-06
This movie is a non-conventional film. So if that's what you're expecting from this, lQQK elsewhere. Excellent acting. Excellent Soundtrack!
That whole non-existent desert road trip schtick.......2005-01-05
Honestly, I only made it about 15 or 20 minutes into this.
The opening act, I guess was supposed to set the stage, but then it ended and I forgot what it was about.
Then we proceed to the worn-thin territory of the predictable "American desert" drive. The one that only exists in movies, where there is no I-40, and everyone just rambles along in treasured classic cars down roads where there seems to be no cross-country trucking, no traffic, no one heading anywhere, drinking coffee alone somewhere in a non-existent Route 66-type diner out of the director's fantasy with the predictable results:
1) Long lonesome two-lane highways? Check.
2) A diner in the middle of nowhere? Check
3) A waitress in a ridiculous pink outfit that says "Hon"? and offers a refill? Check
4) A jukebox that always seems to play some kind of Patsy Cline or something similar, even though both jukeboxes and Patsy are unknown around the states. No Toby Keith or anything like that. Check.
5) No sports TV at the aforementioned bar. Check.
6) Some kind of gas station that would never meet any sort of legal standard, with a 50-year-old pump. Check.
Well, that's about all I got out of the first 15 minutes. I probably could have gone on, but why bother? Not a single original idea so far. Maybe it gets better. I can't be bothered to find out.
Wake Me When It's Over.......2004-05-28
This has got to be one of the most boring not to mention WORST movies I've ever seen. The only saving grace is that Julianne Moore is in it and I feel embarrased for her. What a terrible waste of talent and her time. Typically, I love road movies but do yourself a favor and pass on this one. The main character is so selfish and loathsome that it makes it impossible to immense yourself in the movie which doesn't matter anyway because the movie itself goes nowhere.

Not a baseball movie...But a definate 80s classic..........2007-04-11
The first time I saw this movie I was probably either 5 or 6. This movie, along with many other 80s movies (Breakfast Club, Terminator, Weird Science, etc.) has been one of those movies that has stuck with me almost my whole life...Of course it's not the greatest movie...I agree with a lot of reviewers about the cheesy music...But it was the 80s...However the story itself is really good...
Now one thing that got to me was that they didn't release a widescreen version of the film...Instead we get this lame a** fullscreen crap which is why I didn't buy it...But luckily man created DVD Recorders and they played this movie on tv in HD and widescreen and I'm recording it as we speak so now I can enjoy this classic the way it and all movies should be enjoyed in...widescreen...
Master OF The Rare LASERDISCS Movies........2005-07-12
I have The Slugger's Wife [ 1985 - NEIL SIMON] on Laserdisc,'tis a great Movie and A MUST SEE :p
Not A Baseball Movie.......2005-01-06
For those of you renting this movie or watching it on HBO or whatever, and you're expecting this to be a baseball movie, of course you might be a bit disappointed. It's not realistic as a baseball movie, it's supposed to be a romantic comedy...the baseball player falls for a singer and marries her, only to smother her with too much love. At the end, they don't get back together, which is fitting, because the door is left open for that to happen. I've seen other reviews for this movie, and I'm sorry that you didn't like it, but I thought this was a very funny, very cute movie that happened to have some baseball elements in it. Give it a break.
Worst Sports Movie EVER!.......2003-07-24
I spent 2 hours of my morning watching this on HBO Signature and this is anything but good. The music in this movie is terrible, and I was cringed while I listened to it. This movie does not resemble baseball. Superstar athletes are inspired by others, but definately not to the point of this movie's main character. What bothered me the most was really a, if you think about it, an embarassment to Braves fans and baseball fans. In the last game of the season, when the player hits HR #62 you barely see the ball go over the fence. You could see empty seats all over. In addition, if the Braves won they would enter the playoffs. In real baseball, all 30 teams would have packed stadiums filled, with the probable exception of Montreal. This is the worst sports movie EVER. The romance is tolerable, but these newlyweds seem to hate each other. The wife doesn't want her own HUSBAND to see her. Doesn't sound like love to me. Don't waste your time on this piece of trash.
A Good Look at The Limelight Atlanta.......2002-04-13
While the story might be a bad excuse for an apology to Marsha Mason from Neil Simon, and the baseball scenes are incredibly inaccurate (Astros and Braves are wearing their home uniforms at the same time), this video affords the viewer a look at one of the best nightclubs ever seen. Limelight Atlanta was built in the old Harlequin Dinner Theatre and featured an extravagant light show valued some say at over a half million dollars. It's unfortunate the club is gone, but the footage inside the club is wonderful. Also filmed inside The Saint Atlanta which closed shortly after the movie was released theatrically...

For two-thirds of its spare 86 minutes, this remake of the 1962 cult classic is a tautly constructed, engaging, supernatural suspense thriller. Then, right when it needs to kick into high gear, it all goes flooey. Splatter fans will be disappointed by the low gore quotient and deliberate pacing; the film favors psychological horror over physical. The evil screaming worm-people that are intercut throughout the picture lose their shock value pretty quickly. The climax is, well, anticlimactic. And the shaggy-dog ending, which was a letdown in the original, is a letdown here too. But Larry Miller is superbly evil as the pederast and murderer who returns from the dead to terrorize the woman who helped put him behind bars. And Bobbie Phillips, despite her limitations, is nicely effective in the lead, especially in the quieter moments. It's two-thirds of a good movie (but then again, so was <I>Apocalypse Now</I>). Trivia factoid: Sidney Berger, who was the creepy neighbor in the original, plays the older cop in the end sequence. <I>--Geof Miller</I>
Customer Reviews:
HEAVY DRAMA, LOTS OF LESSONS ABOUT LIFE AND DEATH, BUT OBVIOUSLY NOT A.D.D. FRIENDLY.......2006-07-15
The 1998 version of the 1962 low-budget horror classic.
It was a bad idea to classify this as a "horror" story, even though some of the events do qualify as horror. But too many people try to match this to the original, and that in itself is a mistake. In the day where original films are passe, at least this tries to make a new story based on a similar premise. That being a young woman is made to face her fear.
The Phillips character (Alex), as a young naive girl, witnesses the rape and murder of her mother, and could have shot this fiend (Louis, portrayed by Larry Miller) before he killed her; he foolishly left his gun on the nightstand. Watching the mother character's neck snap in the hands of Louis, is singularly unpleasant to watch, and downright disturbing. Instead, she panics and runs. He was obviously caught, and served twenty years for his offense, and now he's out to even the score ("I never hold a grudge, once I get even").
It's about sacrifice, facing the thing that scares you the most, and letting your worries go. Many times in the film, the Sandra character (Shawnee Smith) tells her big sister not to worry about her, "You worry too much, I'll be fine." Alex sees herself as the reason the girls were orphaned so early, and denied the relationship with their mother; she could have shot Louis before he killed her mother (the father was absent all along, pretty typical in too many families) and fretted over Sandra as if she were her own daughter. In an act of closure, on the twentieth anniversary of the murder, Alex goes to the seaside to let the wind blow the ashes of her dead mother over the ocean, and when she returns to the car, there's a balloon on her car's antenna. Louis has obviously been stalking her, and at gunpoint, he decides it's time to finish old business. You are forced to drive to your home and watch this monster at work again. So what do you do? With a murderer's gun to your ear, you floor your gas pedal, steer your car off the pier, and even though you die yourself, you rid the world of this filth who has ruined at least three lives.
The entire middle of the film is a personal journey through life in an alternate dimension. Her aquaintences are all there, with their own lives, but everything they say and do, is geared to her dilemma. She's dead, and refuses to face it. She is afraid to leave her sister behind, and afraid of the man who has tormented her for twenty years, and afraid to move to the next. The "beings," I'll call them, are symbolic of crucial times , people and events in her world, and they are called "annoying" by some people, but they are symbolic of personal demons in her life; they pop up at crucial moments. Startling to look at, because they come in so unexpectedly, they are meant to catch you off guard, as they do Alex.
The events are about closure, and moving on, and in one flashback scene toward the end, the old man in the bar asks her, "You're not afraid, are you?" And again, Sandra says "You worry too much; I'll be fine."
It's a movie about life, that's all.
Not as good as the original, but it didn't suck as much as I was expecting it to........2006-07-10
A young girl sees her mother violently killed at the hands of the live-in boyfriend (who also happens to be a carnival clown). Later as an adult she is haunted by her past when the carnival comes back to town.
I loved the original black and white Carnival of Souls movie and I'm usually a little skittish about remakes. I must admit that I was given some forewarning that Wes Craven changed the plot in this one, which probably helped my overall take on it. So from the start I wasn't expecting much.
In this version the girl and her sister own a bar. There is no church and no organ music, which takes away from the eeriness that we all loved. Hmm how to describe? In another review someone described the original b&w movie as being "darkly poetic and haunting," which can't be said any better. In this version, Wes Craven turns the carnival into a brighter, more chaotic and psychotic place. The ending is similar in the sense that everything is not what it seemed, but obviously with the different plot comes an entirely new scene.
Shawnee Smith is in this film, which is a definite bonus. Also Larry Miller plays a great sicko clown!
I'm giving the movie a 2.5. Compared to the original, the movie deserves a 1 or less. However, anyone who enjoys Wes Craven flicks and sees this movie before seeing the original will probably enjoy it enough to rate it a 3 or 4. So I'll be generous and rate in the middle.
Stink, Stank, Stunk!.......2005-06-14
This 1998 version of the 1963 orignal is a pathetic attempt to scare, with its mundane "slamming-door-type" effects and stolen Jabob's Ladder gouls! I was very disappointed by this cheap imitation to conjour the allure and intrigue of the original masterpiece. I expected more, because of its later date of production. The only pleasant thing I can say about this movie,
save your money and buy the original version, whether it be re-mastered, colorized, or un-cut, but don't buy this!
They await..........2005-01-19
A classic horror film which reaches deep inside the psyche to manifest those dark primal fears.
Some people just can't deal with stress very well. A young lady is transported into the shadowy recesses of her own darkside, cued by the infernal instrument of the organ. Her life becomes haunted by her fears & nightmares, as they slither into reality.
The camera angles are very creativly utilized, & the sense of eeriness is preserved well throughout the movie. I thought it a great touch to present the movie mostly non-verbal but for a couple of occasions, in order to present realistic dream sequences. Mental torment & fantasy / reality crossover rampant here, without the demoralization. Very well recommended.
I HATE THIS MOVIE!.......2002-09-24
Why do I hate this movie? For many resons, in fact UNCOUNTABLE reasons. I'm not a snob, but truly, this is the stupidest remake ever! I'm a big fan of the original, it's one of the deepest, most disturbing films of all time. But this! It's a blasphemous (to the original)piece of garbage, which is unbeleivably tedious, and uses the original's title wi9thout hardly using any of the great material presented. Whatever you do, PLEASE don't watch this movie! Watch the original!

Customer Reviews:
"The black man cannot be destroyed...that's gospel truth.".......2005-01-23
This Vinnette Carroll production, brought to life by a talented 8-member troupe of singers and dancers, features a combination of poetry and song which reflects the African-American experience. Inspiring, at the same time that it is an indictment of the treatment black America endured over the ages, the production celebrates the ultimate triumph of the rich and varied African-American culture.
With music created and directed by Tony Award winner Cleavant Derricks and his twin brother Clinton Derricks-Carroll, the revue showcases the performers and their melodies and rhythms, rather than musical instruments. Hand-clapping, simple drums, and a single piano or sax often provide the only accompaniment.
Joyful and enthusiastic, the music ranges from early chants and marches, as in "When the Colored Band Comes Marching Down the Street," through folk dance, gospel, revival music, blues, and disco. The late Lynne Thigpen is the female anchor, doing a passionate blues solo, her voice a contrast to the soprano of Lynne Clifton-Allen, who "just spreads her mouth and shouts, 'Come to Jesus'" in a gospel song. Clevant Derricks is a powerful interpreter/singer throughout, as is his twin, Clinton Derricks-Carroll, whose stirring bass/baritone inspires both the live audience and the viewer.
The production contains almost as much poetry as it does music, with poems by Countee Cullen, Julian Bond, Nikki Giovanni, and Langston Hughes, among others, enacted by the talented cast. Sometimes humorous and satiric, the poems range from the elegantly expressed to the vernacular, always showcasing attitudes and events which have led to moments of triumph, including domestic triumph. Gracefully blending songs, dance, and poetry, the revue creates a moving and comprehensive tribute to the enduring spirit of Black America. As one singer attests, "You can't put out the fiery spirit [of] my soul." Mary Whipple

I'd watch anything with Meg Tilly in it.......2006-02-04
Meg Tilly sitting in a chair reading the newspaper for an hour and a half gets 3 stars from me so anything that she's in starts from there. This is an okay story, plot, etc but not the best to be honest. She's done better movies but this one's not bad and she does get a good amount of screen time. It will keep you entertained and if you're a fan of Meg Tilly, you'll like it.
