Although it wasn't a box-office success when originally released in 1958, Vertigo has since taken its deserved place as Alfred Hitchcock's greatest, most spellbinding, most deeply personal achievement. In fact, it consistently ranks among the top 10 movies ever made in the once-a-decade Sight & Sound international critics poll, placing at number 4 in the most recent survey. (Universal Pictures' spectacularly gorgeous 1996 restoration and rerelease of this 1958 Paramount production was a tremendous success with the public, too.) James Stewart plays a retired police detective who is hired by an old friend to follow his wife (a superb Kim Novak, in what becomes a double role), whom he suspects of being possessed by the spirit of a dead madwoman. The detective and the disturbed woman fall ("fall" is indeed the operative word) in love and...well, to give away any more of the story would be criminal. Shot around San Francisco (the Golden Gate Bridge and the Palace of the Legion of Honor are significant locations) and elsewhere in Northern California (the redwoods, Mission San Juan Batista) in rapturous Technicolor, Vertigo is as lovely as it is haunting. --Jim Emerson
Customer Reviews:
Hitchcock at his trippiest..............2007-06-01
VERTIGO remains one of the most thought-provoking films I have ever seen. I still remember my first taste of this film (at least thirteen years ago!). It's safe to say (without exaggeration) that it changed my life and how I view cinematography. Yes, I know that is a tall statement to make about this movie, but it's well-merited. Why? For starters, Alfred Hitchcock's depiction of the medical condition of vertigo (extreme dizziness onset by perceived or actual drops in height--example: standing at the top of a tall staircase and glancing down at the ground floor from where you stand) feels like, both, a deep acid trip (complete with spinning imagery and disorientation), as well as a really extreme look at the effect of this condition on Scotty (James Stewart), a retired policeman, hired by an old friend to follow his beautiful wife (Kim Novak) who believes is possessed by the dead soul of a mad woman. Of course, this woman also has a penchant for ascending to great heights and attempting to jump off of them. This only adds another twist to Scotty's pursuit of the woman.
Alfred Hitchcock always had a flair for bringing the ironic, gothic and darkly comedic all to the foreground, in his films. Cinematography was one way he achieved (and manipulated) these emotions in the stories he wove so eloquently, on screeen. VERTIGO is no exception. What's more, Kim Novak is a very compelling and beautiful actress who stepped out of her more "cheesecake" roles to play the role of Madeleine, a very deeply disturbed (and perhaps, psychologically pursued?) woman with a secret. What's more, I love James Stewart, here. His relationship with Madeleine is conflicted and borders on pseudo-erotic. Of course, I won't divulge more plot details here. I just figured dropping that clue would tease and tantalize you enough to want to see this great film for yourself. I am so glad that it was given the kudos it deserved, with a re-released DVD addition. Great news!!!
Criterion Collection would have done a superior job!.......2007-05-28
This mesmerizing film has been part of our culture for over a half-century. While it has its flaws -- especially in a script that reaches it's climax too early, and tacks on a final twist that is so unsatisfying-- it's a legacy film worth all the praise it has received.
James Stewart and Kim Novak are each remarkable, and the cinematography is perhaps the best of any Hitchcock film. Indeed, so many compelling moments in the film have no dialogue, the camera work is amazing. Bernard Hermann's score is consistently fine, though at times overbearing. The complexities of plot and use of symbols and colors throughout the movie are dazzing.
So why not five stars? Because Universal Home Video screwed up this particular remaster so badly, it interfered with my enjoyment in a BIG way. While the visual transfer is acceptable, the sound remastering is gruesome, with the score blasting several decibels above the voices, with reengineered sound effects produced on a Foley stage, and some critical dialogue marred by rolloff distortion. (Some viewers care about this stuff; others don't.)
Here's the beef. No corporation has the right to re-engineer a film -- especially one of this caliber -- in a way that alters the intent of the fimmaker. If one adds to that the weird balance of score and voice on the DVD, the occasional man-made distorion and trumped-up sound effects -- it's just not right. As for anamorphic widescreen, forget about it. It's not here.
I buy Criterion Collection remasters more than any because they are faithful to the originals, because their extras are meaningful, and because the company simply respects great movies. Their DVDs may cost a little more, but the payoff is worth it. Hopefully, Criterion will secure the rights to this beautiful chiller some day so the next generation can see it the way filmgoers did in the 1950's.
A wonderful psychological thriller poorly transferred and remastered by a company that should have known better.
Compelling!.......2007-04-23
This timeless thriller is one I love to watch often on a Sunday afternoon. One of Alfred Hitchcock's greats! James Stewart plays the police detective Scottie Ferguson who suffers from vertigo when in high places after the accidental death of a police friend during a roof chase. The accidental death is partly Scottie's fault and he bears the mental scars. Before he can recover from one blow, he's given another when duped by a beautiful woman and an old friend who have a sinister plot and a part for Scottie to unwittingly play.

One of Hitchock's best!.......2007-04-05
This haunting, mysterious, romantic movie about obsession is amazing every time I watch it. Although Hitchcock didn't originally cast Kim Novak as the source of Jimmy Stewart's affections, he later admitted that she made this movie what it is. The beautiful San Francisco Bay Area is truly a memorable "character" in this fabulous classic.
art.......2007-03-05
i am terribly surprised about how many seemingly quasi-intelligent people have left less than stellar reviews. and one of the only things i can think of that could cause these people to react in this way is that they just really dont think with the literary mind. why must we always be entertained the way we expect to be? our expectations of what someone else is saying always taints the way we listen. an objective ear is needed. a truly artful one. one that is connected with the greater picture of human existence, not our tawdry allegiances to technicality.
there is a thing we talk about in all stories called the suspension of disbelief. people read beowulf and dont believe that any of it really happened. but you allow yourself to be deceived by the story so that you can see something else beyond it. if all you look at is what is spoonfed to you and if it doesnt add up.....well im sorry to be so abrasive but what a sad existence you must lead.

Tyler Perry, impresario of the gospel theater circuit, brings his gun-toting granny-drag persona Madea back to the big screen in <I>Madea's Family Reunion</I>, a sequel to the surprise hit <I>Diary of a Mad Black Woman</I>. In addition to being saddled with an unruly foster teen (Keke Palmer, <I>The Wool Cap</I>), Madea has two troubled nieces: Lisa (Rochelle Aytes, <I>White Chicks</I>), who's engaged to an abusive and controlling investment banker (Blair Underwood, <I>Something New</I>); and Vanessa (Lisa Arrindell Anderson, <I>The Second Chance</I>), who can't open herself to the affection of a bus driver/artist (Boris Kodjoe, <I>The Gospel</I>) because of childhood abuse. Wreaking havoc on both of their lives is their mother Victoria (Lynn Whitfield, <I>Eve's Bayou</I>, in delirious wicked witch mode). Like Madea's previous outing, <I>Madea's Family Reunion</I> may induce mental whiplash--the movie zips from a discussion of flatulence to a jazz-backed poetry reading to domestic violence (Underwood, perhaps eager to leave his bland good-guy image behind, is genuinely scary), or from an act of horrific revenge to a staggeringly gaudy wedding. Though schizophrenic and morally questionable (beating an adult women is clearly wrong, but whipping a child with a belt in the name of tough love is apparently good), the movie is definitely unpredictable and never dull. Also featuring Cicely Tyson (<I>Because of Winn-Dixie</I>) and the poet Maya Angelou. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Tyler Perry hits the bullseye again. This item has been given by me to 6 of my friends. We can all learn something from writing of this quality and scope.
Tyler is the man........2007-05-31
The moive was generally good fun and the message pretty clear. I personally still prefer Diary of a Mad Black Woman but I am certainly looking to seeing Daddy's Little Girl.
great.......2007-05-20
i enjoyed every single moment of this movie and it got here in a very timely manner
Hillarious.......2007-05-14
Perfect "chick flick". It makes you laugh, then you get mad, then you cry, then you're happy again. The movie makes fun of some old worn out sterotypes, then it breaks them by showing people who are more true to life than people's perceptions.
Perfect to the very end. I rarely like a movie well enough to purchase it. I'm so glad I bought this one.
New Perry Fan.......2007-04-16
After seeing Diary of a Mad Black woman, I decided to give this movie a spin and I'm glad I did. The number one thing I'm surprised by is Perry's deep subject matters and at the heart of his message about the power of forgiveness. This is not some hammy Lawrence movie like Big Momma's house. It's a drama and a comedy and I don't think it was unbalanced at all. Whenever things get too serious, Madea would show up and deliver the message with a laugh. For me it was great to see Cicely Tyson, Dr. Maya Angelou and Lynn Whitfield working together. Perry has found a good thing and I wish him nothing but continue success. Highly Recommended.

When Roman tribune Marcellus Gallio (Richard Burton) is sent to Jerusalem, one of his assignments is the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Marcellus, a cynical and hardened man, wins the robe Jesus wore to the crucifixion while gambling with other Roman soldiers underneath the dying savior. He later becomes convinced that his hallucinations and violent outbursts are the result of a curse received from the robe, which is now in the possession of his escaped slave, Demetrius (Victor Mature), somewhere in the Middle East. He sets out to find Demetrius in order to destroy the robe and the curse and finds faith instead, converting to Christianity. This was the first movie to be filmed in CinemaScope, and won Oscars in 1953 for costume design, art direction, and set decoration. The visual aspects of the film are stunning, and it may be worth viewing for that alone; however, the script and acting leave much to be desired, and you won't find inspiration in these areas if that's what interests you. If, however, you are more interested in this film for its religious matter, the story of the conversion of the hardened Marcellus is inspiring. <I>--James McGrath</I>
Description
The first movie ever filmed in CinemaScope, THE ROBE ws nominated for five Academy Awards in 1953, including Best Picture and Best Actor for Richard Burton. Burton stars as Marcellus Galilo, the Roman centurian charged with overseeing the crucifixion. But when he wins Christ's robe in a gambling game at the foot of the cross, his life is forever changed.

Mythology is fun........2007-06-19
No historians of the time mention Jesus. Suetonius (65-135) does not. Pliny the Younger only mentions Christians (Paulists) with no comment of Jesus himself. Tacitus mentions a Jesus, but it is likely that after a century of Christian preaching Tacitus was just reacting to these rumours, or probably talking about one of the many other Messiah's of the time. Josephus, a methodical, accurate and dedicated historian of the time mentions John the Baptist, Herod, Pilate and many aspects of Jewish life but does not mention Jesus. (The Testimonium Flavianum has been shown to be a third century Christian fraud). He once mentions a Jesus, but gives no information other than that he is a brother of a James. Jesus was not an unusual name, either. Justus, another Jewish historian who lived in Tiberias (near Kapernaum, a place Jesus frequented) did not mention Jesus nor any of his miracles. It is only in the evidence of later writers, writing about earlier times, that we find a Jesus.
One of the Best "Biblical Epics".......2007-06-09
This 1953, multiple-Academy Award winning film is easily one of the best of the Biblical Epics, and was the "prequel" to "Demetrius and The Gladiators," which continued the story precisely where it left off in this presentation. Featuring some of the most powerful performances to that time, it is the inspirational tale of the conversion of Marcellus Gallio, the Roman Centurion (superbly portrayed by Richard Burton) who supervised the crucifixion of Jesus, and the price he and his lady-love (Jean Simmons) paid for their faith. In the story, Marcellus and the freed Greek slave Demetrius (Victor Mature) come into guardianship over the robe worn by Jesus at the crucifixion, a situation around which the story is woven. Though the performance is much-criticized as being "over the top," Jay Robinson's portrayal of the Emperor Caligula will grab your attention, and does reflect the thoroughly evil and dominant position that this emperor occupied at the time. It would be a mistake to own this film without also possessing the sequel. A very touching and inspirational movie classic.
THE ROBE, MOVIE VS BOOK.......2007-06-08
This is a review of The Robe, the movie.
It has been almost 50 years since I last saw this movie. I did not remember that it was the first Cinemascope picture from way back in the 50's, 1953 actually.
I have recently read the book. The screenplay is reasonably faithful to the spirit of the story; some of the scenes, events, take place in a different context from those in the novel, but do not detract from the story.
Burton and Simmons are delightful to watch as they do their 'work.' Jay Robinson who plays Caligula does a very good job; his performance is almost in the nature of an upstage to the rest of the cast. The decadence of his rule as Roman Emperor is alluded to by casting him in, what were at the time (the 1950s), certain gay stereotypes.
Also, the character of Tiberius Caesar is well developed. His forecast of the development of Christianity is in keeping with the novel, but in more ambiguous terms than the author's. All the same, very effective.
To explain this last comment: Tiberius' commentary avoids the author's allusion to the later development of Christianity after it became the dominant religion of the Roman Empire when it would be in, to quote Douglas, 'a position to dictate terms.' In this way, the author shows us Christianity in its infancy with a warning of what happens when power, even religious faith, is misused.
All in all, I think all those who profess to be Christians would benefit from both seeing the movie and reading the novel. I could not help, myself, but be moved by both.
The Robe.......2007-05-19
This was an awe inspiring movie. The end was a heart stopper. I will watch it over and over.
Excellent.......2007-05-12
I remember seeing this movie as a teenager and I have always remembered it and enjoyed it and I had to have it in my collection to watch whenever I want to.

One of the Best.......2007-05-15
This is one of the all time classics, a great movie!
One of the best movies ever written and filmed.......2007-05-14
As I stated, this is one of the best movies ever written and filmed. Once you have seen this movie, you will never forget it-it will haunt your dreams. Excellent film!
Portrait of Jennie.......2007-02-13
Very fine and moving film. Good actors, story line excellent, and filming very nice. Movie still entertaining after all these years.
A Haunting, Timeless Romance........2006-10-24
This film is a magical gem. Despite the heavy-handed opening titles which were in vogue in the 40s, this story is one of a timeless love, and artistic inspiration. Set in New York in the 1940s, Joseph Cotton is a struggling painter who finds artistic inspiration in a chance encounter with an engaging little girl. But the girl becomes a mystery, as everything she talks about is from a past generation, and she asks him to wait for her to grow up.
Their chance meetings increase, and the threads of the mystery start piecing together, as each time they meet, she is significantly older. She in this world, but not of this world, and the entire film is as enchanting to the viewer as Jennie (Jennifer Jones) is to Eben (Cotton). Ethyl Barrimore, another actress who always had an "other world" quality becomes Eben's mentor in the art world, and his mother-figure confidant. Through her caring eyes we see both how his friends love him and fear for how the world would think he is insane.
Beautifully shot in ways that are still astounding, to make the film look like a painter's canvas, and also to make Jennie look somehow far away, even when she is in Eben's arms, the film is mainly in black and white, but as we reach the stormy climax, color comes into the frame, until the final shot in full color is the full realization of the promise of the film. Rarely has any film so successfully had the filming itself be as magical as the story. This is the ultimate romantic fantasy, a story and film that love can not only transcend time, it is beyond time. Beautiful in every respect.
Lovely, haunting story, marred by an unrealistic Jennifer Jones.......2006-10-21
I remember reading this story in junior high school - it's a wonderful, haunting tale of the love between a struggling artist and a mysterious girl who ages in fast forward.
This was the first time I had ever seen the movie, and right off the bat, I was bothered by Jennifer Jones's appearance. Jones's features immediately struck me as those of someone who had recently had plastic surgery. I've seen enough of these to know the subtle signs.
For this fantasy storyline to work, one has to accept Jennifer Jones as a sweet, innocent young girl who grows up into a twenty something woman. And Jones's plastic appearance immediately put the kibosh on any possibility of being believable as sweet and innocent
At the time that this movie was made (filmed at various times from 1947 to 1948), Jennifer Jones was already 28-29 years old. That's the age at which some fair skinned people start having the beginnings of wrinkles and sagging skin. No doubt she needed some work to make her face as smooth as a young teenager again. Unfortunately, whoever did her surgery didn't quite get it right (there are better plastic surgeons these days).
The multitude of closeup shots in this movie only emphasize the dissonance in the appearance of Jones's face. The skin on her cheeks and forehead are taught as a drum, and her cheekbones are emphasized while the cheeks are hollowed out. In some closeup shots, there are still a few wrinkles in her eyelids, while in other shots the underside of her jaw bulges and sags slightly. These are areas that a modern surgeon could have taken care of better.
The biggest problem in her appearance is that her mouth is widened out unnaturally by this selective (and somewhat overdone) pulling of skin. That's because the basic facelift involves pulling the skin from the side, and trimming off the excess in an incision right in front of the ears. Do this to yourself in front of a mirror and you will see the effect - the cheeks get tightened and hollowed out, the cheekbones emphasized, and the mouth is widened laterally by this skin pulling.
I couldn't help but focus on Jennifer Jones's odd looking facelift appearance as I watched this movie. It sure ruined it.
Ugh.....

Ice Cube has turned his frown upside down with the family-friendly screwball road movie <I>Are We There Yet?</I> We know the actor/rapper can use his trademark scowl to be funny (the <I>Friday</I> and <I>Barbershop</I> series), or to be mean (<I>Boyz in the Hood</I>)--but can he use it to melt kids' hearts? That's the question <I>Are We There Yet?</I> answers with a resounding yes for youngsters in the audience (which will be the lions' share), but it'll probably be an emphatic shrug for the grownups. The contrived plot has Cube playing a wannabe-player (as in ladies' man) and ex-player (as in washed-up minor league baseball star) who now owns a sports memorabilia business. His partner, played by Jay Mohr is just a throwaway, as is the talented Nia Long, the single mom that Cube sets his blinged-out sights on. To try to get in her good graces, he offers to transport her two bratty kids in his pride-and-joy Lincoln Navigator for a joy ride to a distant city where she's attending an emergency business meeting so they can have a New Year's Eve celebration together. This kiddies version of <I>Road Trip</I> and <I>Planes, Trains and Automobiles</I> has its cute moments, but plenty more gross-out moments which will please the kids no end, especially as the Navigator gets more and more trashed. Suffice it to say they all learn about each others' good sides and hearts are suitably melted all around--until after the credits roll, then you'll probably forget about the whole thing.<I>--Ted Fry</I>
Customer Reviews:
It's an okay movie.......2007-05-12
Not a bad movie. Not a great movie, but not bad either.
Not What I Expected.......2007-05-07
We saw the move, "Are We There Yet?" in the theater and really enjoyed it, so we decided to purchase this DVD. It would be a good movie for kids if not for the swearing and bad attitudes of the children in the movie. We probabbly will not watch the DVD again (at least not with kids).
Family Friendly Fun.......2007-04-12
There is nothing great in this film, but it does have its moments and is pleasing entertainment. Ice Cube believably loses his bad-boy image, Nia Long is always both pleasing to watch and believable in this limited role, and the child actors are cute, but they always look like they are acting. These same two kids again play brother and sister later with Eddie Murphy in Disney's "The Haunted Mansion."
The script is cliche-ridden and predictable, and the direction is pedestrian at best; however, the film is also enjoyable in spite of these flaws. We get a typical guy all hot for a woman whom he discovers later has kids that are resentful of anyone trying to take their father's place. This "road" story has Ice Cube, hoping to get in the good graces of the very hot Nia Long, take the kids to see her in Vancouver, Canada where she is working because her lame ex-husband has bailed out on having the kids (again . . . ). The trio start off hating each other, but end up feeling like a family before all is said and done.
Some good moments: the slow, painful distruction of Cube's Lincoln Navigator, the wacko deer, and the good-intentioned, but easily fooled truck driver. Again, this is harmless family fun entertainment even with it's "been there, done that" feel.
mind-numbingly awful.......2007-04-01
In some sort of alternate universe where Ice Cube does ridiculously lame hack family feel good movies comes "Are We There Yet", possibly the worst movie to come out of 2005. The acting, plot, and overall concept is just so god-awful, a better title would've been "Please, Please God, is it Done Yet?"
*ICE CUBE* does it again.......2007-03-27
I really enjoyed the movie. I think that it is a movie that the whole family can enjoy. If you haven't seen it yet, you should. Definitly watch it with the kids.

Half of a Good Movie.......2007-06-06
The first half starts to tell a good golf story. But somewhere on the way to a good movie the need to make the point that all rich people are basically evil gets in the way. The second half of the movie just made me shake my head shows how bad a movie can be when the scoring political points becomes the objective.
A terrible movie.......2005-10-12
If this director was trying to see how many ugly stereotypes he could cram into 111 minutes I think he succeeded. If you want to see a golf movie see any of the Bobby Jones flicks or better yet get some clubs and learn this wonderful game. You'll meet great folks whether its public or club golf.
A lesson of life!.......2005-06-03
Amateur is according the Greek meaning: all those who love what they do .
And somehow the spirit of constant and ascendant improving established the difference in Foster that day when the cheat was done. He imposed to himself the maximum penalty to finish with that hard and unbearable memories.
But when he watches that young promise who tries by all means to get close him and knowing about him, he will feel the last call and something inside him it will awake.
This slow paced but interesting script is a lesson of life, the constancy, tenacity and work ness will never lead you to a dead zone. Something is watching you and sooner or later the truth will shine.
Along the film there are another secondary lines that support the script: the caddy world, the racism and the secret passions. Splendid photography and a brilliant performance of Gary Sinise and Phillip Baker Hal confer this movie an artistic status.
what about the other kid in the movie ! ! ! ? ? .......2005-05-22
all things aside, the other kid in the movie the caddie friend that has the episode at the end [stated this way without ruining the ending]played a great part as a supporting actor. his name is justin goncalves i think. this kid was very believable in every aspect of the part he played. in fact i think he stole the scenes when he was onscreen with the gamble kid. believability is important and this kid carried his weight the entire movie for what limited scenes he had. i was particularly impressed with the part he played.
PURE...............................................................2005-04-26
I don't know if it was because the main character's name is Gamble, or because Henry Simmons fine self is in here, but whichever the case was, I wanted to see this movie!
Timmy Price, and only child listens as his father teaches him "A Gentleman's Game" How relevant it is to take care of your things. This is hard to stomach seeing that it appears Dad, is a pushover. Price is an accountant, who has invested a nice sum to join a prestigious country club. He decides that maybe Timmy could learn how to play golf. Before seeing if he had a niche for it, decides maybe being a caddy would be more fruitful.
Unbeknownst to dad, Timmy Price (Mason Gamble) seems to have a promising future in golf and it's not long before he's considered "a trophy." Foster considered one of the elite golfer's in his day is a golf teacher. As Timmy seeks him out he learns small trades from him, and they grow as friends with the other helping the other to make transitions in the others life.
Timmy and his father have somewhat of a strained relationship, and it seems that as his golf improves it helps the two connect. Dad is also given the opportunity to reestablish himself in his son's eyes as he finally stands up instead of being intimidated by the "HAVE'S!"
We watch as Timmy experiences a crush with the water girl; and friendships with the other caddies. Golf may seem like the most important issue here, yet it was more of an analogy about choices that life has to offer.

When pistol-packing, chain-smoking granny Mabel "Madea" Simmons (Tyler Perry) invites her family over for the weekend, chaos is sure to follow. First they gather for her sister Irene's funeral and then for the wedding of her granddaughter, Lisa (Sonya Evans). Naturally, nothing goes as planned. The rest of her extended family include daughters Cora (Tamela J. Mann) and Vickie (Pebbles Johnson), granddaughters Jackie (D'Atra Hicks) and Tina (Zakiya Williams), and irrepressible neighbor Mr. Brown (David Mann). The urban inspirational comedy, which was followed by popular spin-off <I>Meet the Browns</I>, takes place between the two events as family members attempt to heal their differences through quips, scriptures, and gospel-oriented numbers. Written, produced, and directed by Perry (who co-wrote the music and lyrics), Madea's Family Reunion</I> was filmed in his hometown of New Orleans, Louisiana in February 2002. A feature film version starring Blair Underwood and Lynn Whitfield is planned for 2006. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

wonderful.......2006-08-07
I enjoy all the Tyler Perry plays and movies that is why I purchased the item
Madea Still in the House.......2006-07-31
I was really impressed and pleased with the fact that the Madea role was still true to form. I thought that being a movie would take away the real Madea role. But it didn't!!! Super. I really enjoyed it.
Cathy Autry (a Madea fan from the very beginning)
Matriarchy.......2006-07-04
We live out in the midwest, so when we saw this movie, we were struck by the style and elements this movie captured for not only Black Americans, but other minorities as well [including all of you of European ancestry, who don't think you have a culture too]. It was funny, but it has elements of pride in it about black people, that shows the value system and familial relationships that are tribal and beautiful. The scenes about the elders were breathtaking. They brought the women elders, grandmothers and great grandmothers into the circle at the family reuntion. Cecily Tyson and Maya Angelou added so much. I am pleased to recommend this movie, and you will be delightfully surprised, as we were. Your children should definitely watch it because we aren't aren't paying attention to our elders or doing things that include "Ceremony" to welcome our sacred children into our families.
all families.......2006-06-22
It's absolutely wonderful how Tyler is able to transcend all earthly families and show that we all have the same problems and we all need the same Savior
Madea's Family Reunion.......2006-03-20
This is a wonderful, well written family movie. Admire Tyler Perry's GOD given talent very much. However, I will not order anything else from Amazon. Amazon mislead people by stating it was 2006 and Lynn Whitfield was in this DVD. Since then Amazon has change the ad, prior to they sold many DVD's under a false ad. Again the movie is fantastic.

Bumbling cop Washburn (Jimmy Fallon) is a terrible driver who loses his license and so recruits reluctant Belle (Queen Latifah) and her souped-up mega-cab after he stumbles onto a team of supermodel bank robbers. Several klutzy encounters and high-speed car chases ensue. If this sounds to you like the obvious result of a Hollywood pitch session ("Hey, let's pair some guy from <I>Saturday Night Live</I> with a tough-talking African-American and set them after babes on wheels!"), you're right; it doesn't mean, however, that you won't get in a few decent laughs before director Tim (<I>Barbershop</I>) Story's amiable time-killer falls into a steaming pile of would-be blockbuster buddy film cliches. The ever-ingratiating Latifah has long since proved her star charisma, and Fallon does an amusingly offhand parody of failed machismo. They're clearly having a good time together, and you could do worse than their company. There isn't a frame here that isn't cheaply recycled from some other lame action comedy, but if you grit your teeth for the very bumpy ride, you'll come out without too many scratches.<I>--Steve Wiecking</I>
Description
Sassy hip-hop star Queen Latifah brings hilarious attitude to this hard-driving, high-octane comedy action blast! Latifah plays Belle, New York's fastest cabbie, whose taxi-driving expertise - not to mention her loaded-to-the-max vehicle - comes in handy when a fumbling young undercover cop (Jimmy Fallon) must crack a bank robbery plot hatched by a gang of supermodels! Don't miss this tire-squealing, stop-on-a-dime comedy with a topflight cast of stars, including NYPD Blue's Henry Simmons, Ann-Margaret and supermodel Gisele Bundchen!

WORST MOVIE EVER... ok maybe not, but still god-awful.......2007-04-01
Wow, histerical. Another black-meets-white comedy, full of ridiculously cliched jokes and plotlines. This movie is so lame, the writer should've punched himself in the face the moment he even considered it. Bang your head against a wall for 2 hours rather than subject yourself to this crapfest.
"The Queen Is Back In This *SPEED CHASER*".......2007-03-30
The Movie was okay it had it's moments. Could have been better though.
Taxi - Queen Latifah.......2006-11-10
This movie is such a hoot! The plot has several levels of insanity and all of them are delightful, with the solution to the "crime" a subtle, "only in NYC" surprise. The obligatory "chase" scene is hysterical. Queen Latifa and crew at their joyous best.
Could've been better........2006-06-16
Queen Latifa was great but Jimmy Fallon is an idot. His character was too hard to watch and was insulting to the audience and to police officers even though it's supposed to be a comedy.
See it but don't expect Jimmy Fallon to win any awards, except for maybe the stupid award.

Aimed at teens with numb senses of humor, <I>The New Guy</I> earns its chuckles mostly by accident. Most of the comedy is DOA, although the cast--especially DJ Qualls in the title role--possesses a modicum of scrappy charm. DJ plays a "blip" on his high school's social radar, briefly jailed for chronic misbehavior and mentored in coolness by a fellow inmate (Eddie Griffin), who becomes the funky "new guy" at a new school, where he's worshipped as a mysterious hipster and attracts the hottest cheerleader (Eliza Dushku). Directed without a shred of inspiration (by a cowriter of <I>There's Something About Mary</I>) and looking like a drab 16-millimeter industrial film, the movie would be a waste of time were it not for its abiding cheerfulness, rock-star cameos (Henry Rollins, Gene Simmons, Tommy Lee), Lyle Lovett as DJ's dad, and a fresh cast that <I>almost</I> makes this lowbrow mess worthwhile. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Customer Reviews:
Funny Movie.......2007-05-02
It is really funny, especially if your looking for something mindless....some popcorn for the brain....when you need to unwind and don't want something too serious etc.
A guilty Pleasure.......2007-01-11
I like the New Guy. It has everything in it to be a dud and it kind of was at the box office. It is however a funny and predictable movie but enjoyable.
Dizzy Harrison(Qualls)is a loser and having a terrible senior year. He gets himself expelled by doing some crazy and fairly entertaining acts. He gets trained by his prsion inmated(led by Eddie Griffin)and sets off to his new high school to rule it. He quickly does and falls for the lead cheerleader Danielle(Dushku). She has a thing for "Gil Harris" as he's known at his new school. The movie then becomes the cliche teen movie it is as Dizzy is faced with the moral problem of being who he really is or losing everything he's worked so hard for. Geesh I wonder how it ends.
I like DJ Qualls. He's such a weird looking guy you can't help but like him. His best movie is still Roadtrip, but he does alright in his leading role here. His dancing is pretty hilarious. He's a funny guy and doesn't disappoint.
Eliza Dushku is gorgeous. Her dancing for her two minutes makes the movie for me. She's likeable as well. She's kind of a stiff in this flick, but that can be blamed on the poor writing.
It's a fun predictable movie. It's not as raunchy as alot of the teen movies so younger crowds can watch it. It's a good movie I'm not embarrased to say I own it. Check it out and enjoy yourself.
Absolutely hilarous!.......2006-03-26
My family and I accidentally found this on regular cable tv, and loved it so much, we came to amazon to buy it. I was shocked that none of us remembered any trailers or ads for this movie. It is incredibly funny, for anyone above age of 12.
The New Guy.......2006-01-23
Whenever this guy Dj Qualls is the funny character in the movie, expect it to be funny/stupid. Just the way he looks makes me laugh seriously. This guy is a nerd at the beggining of the movie, then ends up being the cool guy at the end lol. Its funny, all kinds of things happen during the movie to get him where he wants. Definately check this movie out. I havent watched it in sometime so I dont remember it that much, but I remember it being real funny.
Cameos Galore.......2005-09-02
This is a funny movie as is, however, what makes this movie so great are all the Cameos in it (mostly by Music Artist). From Henry Rollins playing a prison warden, to Gene Simons playing a preacher, to Lyle Lovette play Qualls' father, to Vanilla Ice playing an ex-bouncer working in a record store, this movie will keep you laughing. Granted it does take place in High School and geared for the high school/college crowd, it should entrain most everyone 35 and under.

Taxi.......2007-05-13
Great order and delivery service. Recieved the DVD in new and excellent condition. Thanks
