Give credit to director Betty Thomas for making the notorious Howard Stern, self-proclaimed "king of all media," into a nerdish but appealing media rebel who loves his wife and family. Even if you hate Stern's rude radio show, you may discover that the underdog charm of this warm, whimsical film (based on Stern's autobiography) turns you into a fan--for the length of the film at least. Stern delivers a winning performance as the clumsy college kid and aspiring disc-jockey-turned-demon-shock-jock, who becomes an unlikely hero as he battles station managers, network executives, and conservative "arbiters of decency" in the name of unfettered bad taste. Mary McCormack is fine as his understanding wife, Alison, and longtime Stern sidekicks Robin Quivers and Fred Norris acquit themselves nicely appearing as themselves. By the end of this smart, funny little film, don't be surprised if you find yourself cheering for the slob. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>
Customer Reviews:
TRY IT AND SEE.......2007-04-08
I had a good time watching this again after 10 years. It's a little sad however to watch the relationship with Howard and his wife, knowing that it ended later. Im sure every Stern fan has already seen this movie, so for the rest of you, give it a chance.I think after seeing the other side of Howard, you may become a fan too.
A Timeless Classic.......2007-02-12
A Stern fan must have! A great movie, one of the classics
You don't have to be a Stern Fan...............2007-01-12
to enjoy this movie. This is an interesting story of how Howard Stern got started in radio and how he took a little radio show and turned it into the largest rated show in history. He does an excellent job acting, even if he is only playing himself. This is a must for Stern Fans and for anyone who enjoys a really good movie.
Must see!.......2007-01-10
This is one of the most under-rated movies I know of. A hilarious glimpse into the life of one of the most misunderstood men in history.
Please re-issue with commentary, extras, etcetera.......2007-01-04
This ia wonderfully funny film about a truly unusual entertainer and his initial rise in American media entertainment pantheon. It's been available on DVD without any real substantial extras for quite a good while now. Would it behoove Paramount or their corporate Redstone-led overlords to bury the hatchet and allow Howard, et alia, to create a truly innovative and entertaining re-issue of this DVD that would encompass commentaries, documentaries, games and other stuff that only and his creative team could only dream up? Sales would go through the roof, the fans would love it, everyone happy, right?

Peter Yates's flag-waving film stands with <I>To Kill a Mockingbird</I> and <I>American Graffiti</I> as one of the best films about small-town Americana. Steve Tesich won an Oscar for his semi-biographical screenplay about four 19-year-olds who don't know what to do after high school. Dave Stohler (Dennis Christopher) and his three friends--ex-football star Mike (Dennis Quaid), wily comedian Cyril (Daniel Stern), and tough kid Moocher (Jackie Earle Haley)--are doomed to live in the college town of Bloomington, Indiana, where the local kids (nicknamed "Cutters"--a derogatory reference to quarry workers and their blue-collar families) are looked down on by the uppity students of nearby Indiana University.
Stohler escapes into a world of Italian bicycling, picking up the lingo, the accent, and a good share of the talent of his heroes. He is also the scourge of his father's life. The used-car salesman (Paul Dooley) doesn't understand his son's affection for bicycling or, for that matter, his pride in being a "Cutter."
<I>Breaking Away</I> rehabilitates the word heartwarming as Tesich's uncommonly intelligent script gives us well-rounded characters and a potent sense of place. The grandstanding finale--the real life "Little 500" bike race--gives the film a perfect, crowd-pleasing end. However, the film never sacrifices the development of characters for the action. Dooley is especially effective in one of those once-in-a-lifetime roles. The lifelong character actor's place in film history is established with this indispensable performance. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>
Description
This charming, Academy Award winner (1979, Screenplay) cycles high on comedy as four friends come to terms with life after high school. When top-notch cyclist Dave (Dennis Christopher) learns that the world's bicycling champions are always Italian, he attempts to turn himself into an Italian, driving his parents (Barbara Barrie, Paul Dooley) crazy. But everything changes after he meets the Italian racing team-an encounter that ultimately leads him and his friends (Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, Jackie Earle Haley) to challenge the local college boys in the town's annual bike race.

IU nostalgia.......2007-05-13
I attended IU and I very much enjoy watching this movie again and again. It was a well written screenplay and adapted well to a movie version.
Buon giorno, Papa! .......2007-04-23
I just watched this movie for the first time in many years, and was just as captivated by it now as I was when I first saw it shortly after its release in theaters. Those who have grown up in small town America will find elements in the film that will take them back in time! I watched the film with my 12 year old, and both of us connected with the story, the characters, and the humor in it. This is indeed a real charmer of a film. I gotta have the DVD for my collection!
Breaking Away.......2007-03-28
We were so pleased to be able to purchase this movie as we could not find it anywhere else. It was in perfect condition in its original unopened wrapping and it came within three days.
They can't make 'em like this anymore........2007-03-03
"Breaking Away" is a true rarity: a feel-good movie that doesn't that isn't silly. Yes, there are plenty of laughs in it, but they're the result of great acting and writing, not the cheap, crude one-liners that litter so many of today's so-called "comedies." And while the movie will tug at your heartstrings, it never spills over into gooey sentimentality or empty pathos.
But I also feel sort of sad whenever I watch "Breaking Away." The small-town downtown where the guys hang out is just a fading memory for most Americans. And are there any old swimming holes anymore, like the quarry that the characters visit? Or have they all been paved over, for "luxury" McMansion subdivisions?
Shut me up! Just watch "Breaking Away" and enjoy it!
28 Years Later Flick Has Lost None of It's Charm.......2007-02-26
Last Summer, the AFI was running one of their annual 100 best lists on TV. The theme was crowd pleasers. Trying to foreshadow what would be picked "Breaking Away" came to mind. Surprisingly but not much so the film came in eighth. Not having seen the movie since a network TV showing in the early eighties I was compelled to revisit the film. It's as good as ever. What accounts for the film's durability? For starters, director Peter Yates and Oscar-winning screenwriter Steve Tesich fully flesh out the movies central premise of Middle-America townies and their uneasy relationship with the visiting University kids. All of the "Cutter" kids(Dennis Christopher, Dennis Quaid, Daniel Stern, and Jackie Earle Haley) are complex and endearing characters and at the time most of the actors were virtual unknowns so you can accept them as lifelong friends. Christopher's parents played by Barbara Barrie(Oscar-nominated) and Paul Dooley(criminally not nominated) are also recognizable as human beings and not caricatures. Then of course there's the cycling sequences which are nothing less than thrilling. If you haven't heard of "Breaking Away" I would behoove you to check it out. On a note of trivia, In 1980 there was a shortlived TV spin-off of the movie with Shaun Cassidy playing the Christopher role and Dooley and Barrie reprising their parts. The critical reception was pretty good but ABC gave it a killer time slot and the show was quickly cancelled. Also, cult fave P.J. Soles("Halloween", "Rock 'n' Roll High School") billed here as Pamela Jayne Soles has a blink and you'll miss her part as one of the college girls.

From its early scenes of a young Jimmy Piersall literally suffering his father's abusive determination that the boy should play baseball, Robert Mulligan's 1957 <I>Fear Strikes Out</I> becomes more about mental health than love of the game. But this is a compelling drama about the real-life Piersall's gradual breakdown one season before a national audience, the legacy of his domineering dad's overbearing ways. (Karl Malden plays Piersall's father.) Mulligan (<I>To Kill a Mockingbird</I>) brings his usual, civilized mix of poignancy and dramatic urgency to the proceedings, keeping any viewer (sports fan or not) involved. Perkins looks out of place on the field and is meant to appear that way; his fragility and intensity underscore the sad tale of Piersall's woes. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Customer Reviews:
Makes you think twice.......2007-04-01
Excellent movie for all parents with children playing
any sport to watch.
Pretty good movie about baseball, and then some........2006-10-13
Karl Malden and Anthony Perkins make a good pair for the father and son Piersall in this movie. Malden had a slew of movies like this where he played a heavy, in this flick the domineering dad that sends Perkins over the edge. And to say Perkins isn't Gary Cooper or Piersall not Gehrig. Well, duh! Not the point of this movie to make a warm loving character study as that of Gehrig in "Pride of the Yankees." And in that effort this movie is totally successful. Not all baseball stories end in warm touching moments, or the game winning walk-off home run that sends the fans a frenzy. Malden is excellent as Piersall's dad. And Perkins plays an edgy Piersall that can only garner the empathy of the viewing audience. I pesonally asked Jimmy Piersall if ths movie was an accurate depiction of how things actually occurred. He responded by saying that everything except for the scene where he climbed the backstop- the scene where he went over the edge and on his way to treatment- was pretty much on the money. And he said so with the humility that only Jimmy Piersall could respond with. He also chuckled when i asked if there was a deleted scene where Malden stopped him on his way out the door and said, "Jimmy. Here's your glove. Don't leave home without it." All that aside, this is a good movie, albeit an uncomfortable one to watch.
Not "Pride of the Yankees".......2006-07-05
Starring Tony Perkins perfectly miscast as a major league ballplayer. What can you say? The Red Sox have Jimmy Pirsall, Tony Perkins and "Fear Strikes OUT". The Yankees have Lou Gehrig, Gary Cooper and "Pride of the Yankees".
Fear Strikes Out.......2005-08-12
Perkins plays young Pearsall with just the right vulnerability, and Malden does a breathtaking turn as his driven Dad. An over-looked classic from young Mulligan, who'd go on to direct "To Kill A Mockingbird" five years later.
A Perfect Bookend to "Field of Dreams".......2003-05-11
For every person who has a warm fuzzy memory of playing catch with Dad, there is the ying-yang expereince of those abused by fathers living vicariously through their sons' little league experiences. Such is the essence of "Fear Strikes Out".
I first saw this movie on late night TV about 20 years ago. It scared the bejeezus out of me. Carl Malden gave a truly frightening performance. However, he was matched scene-for-scene by Anthony Perkins. I remember one early scene in the movie where young Jimmy Piersall is playing catch, rather poorly, with his father. Carl starts yelling. I was getting a pain in the pit of my stomach. Young Jimmy goes behind a shed, I think, to fish out the passed ball he just missed. Tony Perkins stops, his face contorted in angst. This scene stayed with me much like the Flying Monkees in the "Wizard of Oz" or the head-turning scene in "The Exorcist".
Every little league dad should be forced to this film at the start of every season!

Honky Tonk Freeway.......2006-08-31
The movie is great fun to watch with my family. Parts of this film was filmed in Sarasota,FL where we live and I did work as an extra on this film. We were thrilled to find it and have a copy to enjoy again and again, and of course to go with the my keepsake Honky Tonk Freeway t-shirt, paycheck stubs and letter of thanks.
THE BEST!.......2006-03-17
I love this movie. There is wall-to-wall entertainment; or rather, tire-to-tire. Not one minute leaves you bored. It's a road movie but there is so much more. I love the characters. The actors playing them are all fantastic. I know this is an awful review but if you have ever just wanted to relax, past midnight, to watch a cool movie that will make you laugh but not to where your ribs hurt (the older we get, the harder it is to watch really, really funny movies, isn't it?) then this is your film.
More facts about than a reveiw........2006-03-05
Hi im carl and i live in Sarasota florida. When i was young around 1980 or so Interstate 75 was being built down the west coast. Just east of Sarasota there is a town called Fruitville. This is the town they used as Ticlaw. They painted all of the town pink, and erected a false church steeple behind some trees. The overpass that is referenced in the movie was just south of the Fruitville road(SR780) exit and passed over Palmer road. Its close proximity to the SR780 exit made the palmer road overpass not need any exits. But you will have to watch the movie to find out what they do to the overpass(which was a brand new I75 overpass). I rated it as a three as it was a so-so film but has interesting Florida and I75 history. I just ordered my copy for posterity.

If you are looking for a good laugh, get this movie! An oldie, I've been looking for it on cable for 10+ years. Beverly D'Angelo, Beau Bridges, William Devane, Jessica Tandy, Hume Chroyn, David (?) (the guy who played "Sledgehammer") and other character actors you'll recoznize. One of the funniest scenes has George Dzunda smelling women's panties.

Product Description
Three gorgeous dancers are hired for a new review in Los Vegas at Caesars Place. As the plot unravels, we see the girls going through various trails in their private lives as they prepare for the opening of the show. excellent performances, particularly by Lesley Ann Warren and Rita Moreno carry this too true to life drama.
Customer Reviews:
Worthwhile effort, especially from Lesley Ann Warren.......2005-04-13
An interesting melodrama, this production features Lesley Ann Warren, Rita Moreno and Dianne Kay as three dancers of differing skill levels who are hired for a new revue in Las Vegas at Caesar's Palace, where the picture is set, and focusses upon various travails within their private lives as they prepare for the opening of their show, with the eponymous Warren's character deservedly garnering the most screen time. As a Broadway dancer recruited for the engagement, Warren plays high-stepping Jillian Brooks, whose need for success upon the stage is altered by her affairs of the heart, while Moreno portrays a veteran hoofer whose husband (Tony Curtis) is a sucker for entrepreneurial scam artists, and Kay is an inexperienced beauty queen from the Midwest. The film could easily have been much less engaging, as clichéd situations abound, but the episodic script is effectively utilized and includes a good deal of skillful dialogue, there is splendid editing by John Woodcock, and a strongly appropriate thematic underscore is provided by Jimmie Haskell, while the performance of the talented and generally underprized Warren goes beyond the expected implications stemming from her comeliness.
for Lesley Ann and Rita fans only.......2005-04-12
PORTRAIT OF A SHOWGIRL is the made-for-TV movie genre at it's trashy-best. Musical theatre veterans Lesley Ann Warren and Rita Moreno shine as two hard-boiled hoofers looking to make the 'Big Time' in Las Vegas.
If you're a fan of Lesley Ann and Rita, you'll adore this film. The picture quality is quite lousy, but just having this campy gem on DVD is a miracle in itself.
Not the girls' finest hour, but worth a look nontheless.

Excellent.......2007-01-04
This product was brand new and the picture and image quality was clear and easy to understand. Thanks for a job well done and I look forward to do more business with you in the future and once again, thanks for a job well done and keep up the good work.
Action-less action movie.......2003-06-19
I've seen several of Doplh Lundgren's films. SHOWDOWN IN LITTLE TOKYO had to have been one of his best, and he excelled as the cop who I nicknamed "SGT. SAMURAI". I also liked some of his other films like SWEEPERS, and Lundgren made a great bad guy in UNIVERSAL SOLDIER.
These days, he's suffered the fate of so many karate stars out there to be condemned to only direct-to-video films. He may never be in another theatrical fim again, but that doesn't mean he can't still make good films. I rented this and popped it into the DVD player, having read reviews of it on .... There, it was classified as an action;martial arts;science fiction hybrid, and that appealed to me. I rented WARRIOR hoping to see some of Lundgren's kung fu on display in an exciting action film.
And that's the problem. This movie has much less action than Lundgren fans and Lundgren himself deserve. Oh, what little action there is in this flick is pretty well staged and has Lundgren showing off his martial arts prowess, and earns this film 2 stars in my book. The story is pretty clever to. An earthquake separating California from the mainland U.S., and it is then overrun by inmates of the maximum securiy prison.
That sounds like the perfect setup for an action film, doesn't it? Of course. So why didn't the filmmakers get it right. Didn't they know that action films THAT HAVE ACTION are popular for a reason? Apparantly not. This is the kind of action film that was made in the days when guys like Davey Crockett were popular. Thank God we've gotten past that.
Lundgren's career seems to be at a crossroads now, not so much because he's stuck doing direct-to-video, but because he did this movie. I have no doubt that his other films and his next film will better more enjoyable than this, but if he does continue to make this kind of action film, where the action is running on empty, he may be demoted further from direct-to-video to released-on-video-after-sitting-on-the-studio-shelf-for-three-years.
Not a chop socky action-fest....But still good.......2003-02-07
This movie without a doubt has the least amount of action sequences in it then any other Dolph Lundgren movie. And the one that it does have is very short, but skillfully done. Still the movie is never boring. Even though the movie at times does not make since its still has a fairly decent script with solid acting. Definatly worth a rental, and by no means Dolphs worst film.
A movie of epic terror... for anyone forced to watch it.......2002-07-15
Seldom is a film so bad that I waste my time reviewing it, but this action fiasco is simply so horrible it's worth the effort. I am a fan of the post-apocalyptic genre, and while I've never ranted at the Academy for overlooking him at Oscar time, I have on enough occassions enjoyed Dolph Lungren that I thought we had a chance here. Ninety minutes later, I was ready to go find someone to give me a hug and make me forget having ever seen it. This film fails in every possible way, and action film with no action, a post-apocalyptic with only passing reference to peril and no cool costuming eye candy, a war story with no discernable plot or point, a romance with all the chemistry of a stale pop-tart. This film couldn't even manage to be offensive. I'm sure everyone shares blame in it, the writers, the actors, the director. For goodness sake, if you have some critical need to see this, be it Dolph Lungren fan or masochism, wait for a tv broadcast. Waste as little money as possible.
Okay, Not Great.......2002-02-02
Dolph is the leader of a group of survivors living on an army base after an earthquake isolates California from the rest of the US.
I love Dolph in just about everything, but this movie really suffered from the lack of a decent script.
The writer, just couldn't seem to decide whether to do a 'survival' film, mad max, or some something like the "Stand." What we get is a hodge podge of several decent ideas, with none of them actually going anywhere. Dolph limps valiantly through the storyline, trying to hold it together, with dialog revolving around eating cans of alpo and finding water. Plot threads are left hanging like tinsel.
This movie would've been much better, if they had made it a straight action flick, and left out the hordes of urine drinking, heroin-shooting inmates.
I give this movie 2 stars, for what it could've been.

ANOTHER SIDE.......2001-09-24
Most of us know Jackie Robinson as the one who broke the racial barrier in Major League Baseball. Very few of us know about this other side of Jackie Robinson's life that occured prior to his becoming a Brooklyn Dodger. Enter into the world of a young Jackie Robinson whose life and career hangs in a precarious balance.
The Court Martial of Jackie Robinson is the dramatization of an actual event that occurred in Robinson's life while serving as a Lieutenant at Camp Hood, Texas during the 1944-45 time frame. Here we have a promising young Black officer whose career is about to come to a close. The charge? Refusal to obey a lawful order. Is this true?
Follow closely the events leading up to this delimma of Robinson's. You will find a young man who has dreams and hopes of his own that he wants to see emerge. Jackie is hot tempered and in his day was considered radical in taking a stand. This is the side of Robinson that isn't well known. Seeing how he copes with the challenges put before him and emerges into a champion athlete is a delight within itself. You will enjoy this intriguing drama of a young man unwilling to bend.
A Must See.......2000-03-12
