Along the way she becomes the secretary of the rich and famous Trevor Graydon (John Gavin), befriends the sweet Miss Dorothy (Mary Tyler Moore), fights off white slaver Mrs. Meers (Beatrice Lillie) and hooks up with a lively paper clip salesman, Jimmy (James Fox). In the end it takes a rich nutty jazz baby like Muzzy (Carol Channing) to unravel all these complications, give a great party, and match up lovers.

Julie Andrews is at her peak of adorability in this enjoyable (and surprisingly sarcastic) spoof of the 1920s. It has every trick: occasional silent-movie intertitles, flapper lingo ("Oh, banana oil"), and a laughable plot about women being sold into white slavery by the scheming manageress (splendid Beatrice Lillie) of a Hotel for Ladies, aided by a cabal of wicked Chinese. (The stereotypes are bearable only if you remember this is a spoof of silent movie melodrama.) Even with able support from Mary Tyler Moore and James Fox, this is Julie's show; she plays to the camera with the collusion of director George Roy Hill, who's clearly smitten with her silly streak. The movie has an annoying tendency to spend time on musical numbers--a Jewish wedding, a vaudeville act--that don't serve the plot. A future Broadway musical would create a new score, except for the delightfully catchy title tune. <I>--Robert Horton</I>

5 out of 5 stars Just pure fun.......2007-06-01

This musical is just pure fun - jazzy music, great characters and lots of laughs. We love it!

4 out of 5 stars Throughly Modern Millie.......2007-04-05

This is not exactly a "family movie" which is perfect for adults that enjoy adult humor, but shun violence, sex, and violence. Surprisingly enough, there are a few explitives in this "G" rated movie. Carol Channing is intoxicating as the pleasure seeking widow. This is a must see for those who miss the glamour of "old time" films. The costumes, dance numbers and song are all in fun along with the story line.

5 out of 5 stars Thoroughly entertaining!.......2007-04-01

I watched this with my granddaughters who are ages 11 and 6. Both enjoyed it very much. It is so nice to have a wholesome movie to watch together!

4 out of 5 stars Thoroughly Modern Millie.......2007-03-11

We recently saw this title on stage. It is still a big hit!
The movie version is very well done and holds well to the stage version.
The movie has a few songs that some stage presentations don't use.
All of the music is very well done. Julie Andrews is brilliant, as always!
I feel that this is a movie that the entire family can view and be entertained.

3 out of 5 stars Whose brilliant idea was this?.......2007-02-22

I bought this DVD because Bea Lillie was in it. I remembered her from 50's tv and thought she was funny. She was a disappointment. Okay, the movie was supposed to be a spoof, but it had so many cliches that it was not enjoyable. However, Julie Andrews sang and looked beautiful, and Mary Tyler Moore danced and also looked beautiful. And it is fun to see them in younger days.

<I>Standing in the Shadows of Motown</I> is a must-see film for any fan of the Supremes, the Temptations, Marvin Gaye, or any other classic Motown stars. This swinging documentary celebrates the Funk Brothers--the team of studio musicians who powered dozens and dozens of hit Motown songs--by combining reminiscences, reenactments, and clips from a recent concert put on by the Funk Brothers, featuring singers like Chaka Khan, Ben Harper, and Joan Osborne on classic tunes like "What's Going On," "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," and "Heatwave." This crafty gang of elderly musicians will charm your pants off with a slew of entertaining anecdotes. Though it seems that there's a lot of dirt they're declining to dish, the movie deftly outlines the history of Motown, surely the most significant music label in American history--the label that turned segregated "race music" into chart-topping success. A soulful delight. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Description

Detroit, Michigan, 1959. Berry Gordy gathers the best musicians from the city's thriving jazz and blues scene for his new record company: Motown. For the next 14 years these players are the heartbeat on "My Girl," "Baby Love," "Ooo Baby Baby," "Bernadette," "I Was Made To Love Her," "I Heard It Through The Grapevine," "Dancing In The Street," and every other hit from Motown's Detroit era. By the end of their phenomenal run, the unheralded group of musicians plays on more Number One hits than the Beach Boys, the Rolling Stones, Elvis Presley, and The Beatles combined, making them the greatest hit machine in the history of popular music. They call themselves the Funk Brothers. But no one knows their names...this is their story.

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!.......2007-06-18

I rented this from Blockbuster, and immediately bought it. It's sooooo good and informative, I can't describe it. I loaned it to someone who stayed up until 2:00 a.m. to see the whole thing. There are absolutely great live performances from: the late Gerald Levert, (His "Shotgun" is outstanding) Me'shell Indegeocello (sp.)(who sexes up "You Really Got A Hold On Me"), Bootsy Collins, ("Cool Jerk"). Joan Osborne does a great ("What Becomes of the Broken Hearted") and Ben Harper all sing 2 songs. (The only performance I HATED was Ben Harper's "Heard it through the Grapevine"). Chaka Khan, Montell Jordan & Tom Scott also appear. The remaining "Funk Brothers" musicians who played behind the Motown groups, tell funny stories about each other, how they met, Berry Gordy and the label's performers. They even go to "Hitsville" where it all started. There are reinactments, and old photos. It's so good I've seen it at least six times. You will almost cry at the finale when they introduce everyone, even the musicians that have passed away. Their photos are on stage with the remaining members. There is a second disc of extras that I have yet to finish, but the movie itself is wonderful. I've watched it with Black and White people, young and old, and everyone loves it. Go get it. Now.

5 out of 5 stars I never really liked Motown..........2007-05-25

...and the Motown sound. I saw it as a saccharine, watered-down parody of Soul for mass consumption.

This DVD changed all that for me.

The story of the Funk Brothers and their different personalities --personal and musical-- was fascinating and a revelation. The music is top-notch and the modern vocalists they got for this film and for the excellent soundtrack --buy it, even if you think you don't like the Motown sound-- bring out the magic of those famous tunes I dismissed at an earlier age.

Maybe the current crop of singers have more soul or more influences to draw on than the originals artists, or maybe the engineers/producers sucked some of the guts out of the original tracks... I don't know, but these songs sound great!

What is more or less the same is the line-up of the Funk Brothers, finally getting a very small measure of the recognition they deserve.

The filmmakers and the the artists featured in this film turned me from detractor to a fan of the Motown sound. I can't give a better review than that.

If you like music documentaries and you haven't seen this one, you're missing one of the best!

5 out of 5 stars Standing In The Shadows of Motown.......2007-05-14

Excellent documentary brings to light the artists behind the music that was the "Motown Sound".

5 out of 5 stars Standing in the Shadows of Motown.......2007-05-12

Best DVD in my collection. By far. After watching it I ordered 3 more to give to friends and I may buy more. It's amazing to find all that music behind the Motown hits was played by the group of guys.. and now I know who they are.

This DVD made me want to dance. I swayed to the music as I sang along and smiled as I recalled an earlier time.

Nothing says comedy like a man in a dress, and <I>Charley's Aunt</I> is the archetypal man-in-a-dress comedy. In desperate need of a chaperone so they can woo their sweethearts, two college lads named Jack and Charley persuade their friend Fancourt (Jack Benny, one of the all-time great radio and television comics) to masquerade as Charley's aunt from Brazil, who had failed to arrive. Of course, the aunt also shows up (and is also in disguise), but not before Benny has had ample opportunity to run amok in petticoats while being chased by fortune-hunting beaus. Though the story's social milieu is woefully dated--the need for a chaperone is just the beginning--the movie has a number of classic comic bits that remain funny. <I>Charley's Aunt</I> doesn't suit Benny's dry style of humor as perfectly as does his next film, <I>To Be or Not to Be</I>, and Benny's English accent is a bit hit and miss, but he milks his wig and bloomers for all they're worth. Also starring Kay Francis (<I>Trouble in Paradise</I>), Edmund Gwenn (<I>Miracle on 34th Street</I>), Laird Cregar (<I>Heaven Can Wait</I>), and a very young Anne Baxter (<I>All About Eve</I>). Extras include a chipper commentary from film historian Randy Skretvedt (who rattles off dozens of Jack Benny anecdotes) and a goofy promotional short in which Benny, Tyrone Power, and Randolph Scott compare their upcoming roles. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

4 out of 5 stars Jack Benny. Superstar........2007-06-22

One of my fondest memories of my mispent youth was on Summer vacation watching re-runs of "The Jack Benny Program" on UHF. Sight unseen, I eagerly awaited the release of "Charley's Aunt" on disc. The film isn't a comic masterwork but it's a fun way to spend an hour and a half. Benny, predating Jack Lemmon's work in "Some Like It Hot", is a marvel as the English Earl posing as an Oxford classmate's aunt. His enthusiasm makes the film more than the sum of it's parts. The film also sports a great supporting cast that includes Richard Haydn, Edmund Gwenn("Miracle on 34th Street", and the late great Laird Cregar. If you need to see Cregar at his best check out the vintage noir "I Wake Up Screaming". Now if they would only issue "Buck Benny Rides Again" and "The Horn Blows at Midnight". It also wouldn't hurt if "The Jack Benny Program saw the light of day on disc.

4 out of 5 stars It Took Awhile!.......2007-06-07

Benny's version of the old play was for years unavailable save for the most hideous transfers. Seen on the screen in revival houses it deserved release, but I can't say it is anything earth-shaking. Of the many versions of this play on film I still lean to the earliest - with Charlie Chaplin's brother in the lead - and a now unavailable televised one with Charles Grodin in one of his best roles as an impossibly funny Lord.
This Benny version lacks the combustible physical qualities all the best versions exploit. Charley's Aunt is a sensational example of that nearly impossible form to pull off - farce - and as each scene builds in silliness it requires a little abandon. Unfortunately for Jack Benny the concept of reckless abandon is almost an undiscovered country. He does his best, but piling up physical stunts and gags is not his chosen metier. Instead, fans of Benny should run, not walk to try the exquisite Lubitsch film, To Be Or Not To Be, where Benny marvelously creates a fopish conceited Polish actor who defines 'ham'. Set just prior to the German invasion of Poland, and with a thrilling and justly legendary opening piece of theater, a tip-off of many such sleight-of-hands to come, To Be Or Not To Be remains by several light years Benny's greatest film role. Cast against a luminous Carole Lombard, who plays his cheating wife, Benny is matchless in his every scene.
As for Charley's Aunt: There's no one performance on film of Charley's Aunt deserving classic status. An all star cast combining the very best players in each of the famous roles would be fun to put together. You might start with a striking Jeanette MacDonald doing the role of the 'real' Aunt from Brazil opposite her real life husband Gene Raymond in an early highly abridged tv version with Art Carney doing the honors in the title role.
But if no film version scales the heights don't despair. This is a wonderful can't miss play to see live - if you get a chance even so-so amateur troupes usually shine.

5 out of 5 stars A forgotten favourite.......2007-05-10

It was with some pleasure that I learnt that this little forgotten gem from 20th Century Fox was to be released on DVD. Now my worn out VHS copy can be replaced.

In 1941, this film was as unexpected from Fox as it is today. "Charley's Aunt" is a famous British play which for many years was the staple offering of every English high school drama class. It is a rollicking farce about undergraduates at university, one of whom, Jack Benny, disguises himself as another's Aunt from Brazil "where the nuts come from". The plot is full of romantic misunderstandings all of which resolve themselves for a happy ending.

Jack Benny is an improbable English student but it does not matter. This was one of Benny's best films because he is hilarious in drag and all scenes with Edmund Gwenn, the enamoured professor determined to win his hand in marriage, are priceless. The other standout performers are Laird Cregar, at the time in his twenties and easily immitating a man twice his age and Kay Francis, a model of class and sophistication as Charley's real aunt.

The film is simply directed, maintaining its stage bound roots. The photography is the usual Fox high standard. Only the accents of some of the players betray that this is an American production. The film makes an interesting comparison to an English version released at about the same time, starring Arthur Askey. I like both versions.

Romance at its most anti-romantic--that is the Billy Wilder stamp of genius, and this Best Picture Academy Award winner from 1960 is no exception. Set in a decidedly unsavory world of corporate climbing and philandering, the great filmmaker's trenchant, witty satire-melodrama takes the office politics of a corporation and plays them out in the apartment of lonely clerk C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon). By lending out his digs to the higher-ups for nightly extramarital flings with their secretaries, Baxter has managed to ascend the business ladder faster than even he imagined. The story turns even uglier, though, when Baxter's crush on the building's melancholy elevator operator (Shirley MacLaine) runs up against her long-standing affair with the big boss (a superbly smarmy Fred MacMurray). The situation comes to a head when she tries to commit suicide in Baxter's apartment. Not the happiest or cleanest of scenarios, and one that earned the famously caustic and cynically humored Wilder his share of outraged responses, but looking at it now, it is a funny, startlingly clear-eyed vision of urban emptiness and is unfailingly understanding of the crazy decisions our hearts sometimes make. Lemmon and MacLaine are ideally matched, and while everyone cites Wilder's Some Like It Hot closing line "Nobody's perfect" as his best, MacLaine's no-nonsense final words--"Shut up and deal"--are every bit as memorable. Wilder won three Oscars for The Apartment, for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Screenplay (cowritten with longtime collaborator I.A.L. Diamond). <I>--Robert Abele</I>

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-03-22

This was really a wonderful movie, the acting, the actors
and the storyline. This movie, I think, would even make it
with "todays audience".
A very believable drama with great humor.

5 out of 5 stars Superb Movie.......2007-03-02

I bought this DVD for research purposes. I will be performing in "Promises, Promises" the musical based on "The Apartment". I am so glad I bought this DVD, as this is a great film. That's not just my opinion. "The Apartment" was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, and won 5, including Best Picture and Best Director in 1960.

This film will speak to you on many levels. On one level, it is an indictment of corporate politics and a condemnation of philandering executives. On another level, it is an examination of extramarital affairs, and the sometimes dire consequences. On another level, it is a love story where a damsel in distress literally meets her white knight. Then again, it is about people who fall into the abyss, only to find redemption and the happiness they deserve. It is about knowing what is right, and finally finding the courage to do what is right.

The cinematography is great, as is the lighting. The setup is perfect. We are shown the enormity of a life insurance company, with its 31,000 employees in the Manhattan headquarters. The shots of the teeming, faceless humanity are fantastic. The long shots of the endless office are fabulous, and will make you appreciate black and white. Out of this morass, we are asked to get to know 3 people; C.C. Baxter (Jack Lemmon), Fran Kubelik (Shirley Maclaine) and J.D. Sheldrake (Fred Macmurray). They are embroiled in a love triangle that will change all of their lives.

The late, great, Jack Lemmon is a wonderful C.C. (Chuck) Baxter. Lemmon was a dapper 35 years of age when this film was made. He wants to get ahead, and he does so by selling himself out. He loans his apartment to senior executives for their extramarital assignations. They in turn promise to move him up the corporate ladder. There is humor in this, as Baxter trys to juggle "appointments" with 4 different execs. But, as in the rest of this film, there is a pathos to it.

Chuck has quite a thing for cute elevator operator Fran, played by a 26 year old Shirley Maclaine. She returns his innocent flirtations, but for some reason keeps her distance. Maclaine is all sweetness and vulnerability. So, why won't she go out with Chuck?

As it turns out, Fran has a boyfriend. That boyfriend is the Director of Personnel, J.D. Sheldrake. Sheldrake is quite married, and has slept with many women in the office, including his Secretary Peggy Olsen. Macmurray plays a wonderful cad. He is not sleazy or oily. He is able to continue stringing Fran along until one fateful Christmas Eve.

I won't continue discussing the plot, as you need to experience it as it unfolds. While "what happens next" is not a huge leap of the imagination, the skill of the actors and the sensitive direction make for fascinating viewing. There are some great scenes in this film. The pivotal Christmas Eve scene with Sheldrake and Fran will get you at a visceral level. Macmurray and Maclaine shine here; her with vulnerability and his meeting her vulnerability with incredible insensitivity. Brilliant. Lemmon shines in the "discovery" scene when he figures out that Fran is involved with Sheldrake. Sheldrake had borrowed the apartment for a rendezvous with Fran, and Fran left her compact behind. The compact had a broken mirror. Chuck, not knowing who it belonged to, returned it to Sheldrake. Later, at a Christmas Eve party, Fran loans her mirror to Chuck, who recognizes it. Lemmon communicated so many emotions with his face, his voice, and his body. He was such an actor.

This movie is listed among the Top 100 movies of all time, and it deserves a place on your shelf.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars They don't make movies like this anymore.......2007-01-19

Today's business culture and legal system being what they are, many younger people today are totally unaware of the prevalence of sexual harassment/domination in the workplace as it used to be. Using that theme as a backdrop, "The Apartment" is one of those rare movies that makes you happy, sad, happy, sad ... it's an emotional roller-coaster from start to finish. A great storyline and awesome cast (besides headliners Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine you have great supporting actors such as Fred McMurray, Ray Walston and Edie Adams) make this a genuine period classic that snapshots an era in American culture.

5 out of 5 stars Movie Review 'The Apartment'.......2006-11-10

This movie, 'The Apartment' is an American Classic. Jack Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine at their best. A must for anyone who is a movie collector or anyone who just wants to see how romantic comedy was meant to be done. Surprise ending scare that can only leave you(and apropriately so) with 'Shut Up and Deal'.

5 out of 5 stars A Terrific Movie.......2006-11-09

"The Apartment" directed by Billy Wilder (Some Like It Hot, Double Indemnity, Sunset Boulevard, the list goes on) and starring Jack Lemmon, who had previously collaborated with Wilder on Some Like It Hot, is a great film and is considered by many others to be a great film. It's on The American Film Institute's Top 100 (#93) and is in Roger Ebert's The Great Movies. I had never seen a Billy Wilder film until about four or five months ago. After watching the film, I'm not sure I like it more than the three films mentioned above, but it's a smart and comedic semi-love story that features two great performances by Lemmon and Shirley MacLaine, as well as others. The films idea is truly original: Lemmon plays C.C. Baxter, commonly called Bud. He works in the insurance business (big surprise for a Wilder film) and is trying to get a promotion in an unorthodox way. He loans out his apartments to the executives of the company, so they can carry out affairs with women. In the beginning of the film, as one of the executives leaves with a girlfriend, we get one of the funniest lines in the film (I regret to say I'm paraphrasing):

Man: Why do all you dames have to live in the Bronx?
Woman: You mean you bring other dames up here?
Man: Certainly not! I'm a happily married man.

In another funny bit, we learn that the doctor who lives next to Bud (Dr. Dreyfuss played by Jack Kruschen) is under the impression that Bud is a sex-machine and, at one point, asks Bud if he'll sell his body to science. The love angle of the film fits in with Miss Kubelik (MacLaine), one of the women who runs the elevator is Bud's building. After getting his promotion (his boss Mr. Sheldrake [played by Double Indemnity's, Fred MacMurray] asks for the key to his apartment first), he finally asks Miss Kubelik out. She tells him she has another date, but will meet him at the theatre. This date happens to be with Mr. Sheldrake, whom she's in love with despite the fact he's married, frequently tells her he'll leave his wife, and never does. Anyway; Moving away from the plot, the film is shot in black & white at a point when Wilder could have easily used color. In researching the film a bit, I discovered that he uses black and white to make the colorful events around Bud seem dull and unammusing. Realizing I called this a love-story in the beginning of the review, I have to add that the love story is merely a facade. It plays like a love story, but I think the final scene (and final line) make it clear that it's really not. I think that the final line of Some Like It Hot (if you haven't seen Some Like It Hot, don't find out what the line is in advance) is the best curtain line ever. Before seeing that film, I didn't know what the line was. Before seeing this film, I did know what the final line was. To me, it didn't sound that impressive. After watching the film, when you view the line in context, it is really good. Wilder had a knack for ending his movies on that kind of note and he did oh so perfectly. As I said, earlier...This isn't my favorite movie in the Wilder cannon, but it's a wonderful film combining just the right amount of comedy and drama in a way only Wilder could do it.

4 out of 5 stars A good-quality set..........2006-09-09

... to add to your collection of Shirley Temple movies. While these aren't some of her best, they are still entertaining.

"Captain January" is probably the most fun of the bunch. I like most of the movies Shirley made between 1934 and 1936, and this one falls neatly in amongst them. "At the Codfish Ball", a great song-and-dance number with Buddy Ebsen, is included.

By the time "Just Around the Corner" came out, Shirley was getting a little old, and the mannerisms that might have passed for cuteness as a child were beginning to get a little annoying. The movie is still worth seeing though, if only for her dance routines with Bill Robinson.

When watching "Susannah of the Mounties", keep in mind that it was a story about a different time (the 1880s) that was made in a different time (the 1930s). It will probably come across as somewhat racist to today's viewers, but it will still probably appeal to Shirley fans.

The problems with sound that I noticed on some of the discs in the last two collections seem to have been corrected. The audio was fine, and the colourizations were decent. People thinking of purchasing this collection might want to be aware that, unlike the three previous collections, there was no charm bracelet included with this one (I don't mind... I'm still trying to figure out what to do with the three I now have!).

All in all, it's a fine set for the collection. I hope there will be a Volume 5... I'm still waiting for "Stowaway" and "Poor Little Rich Girl" (two of my other 1936 favourites).

Sometimes referred to as "the Poor Man's <I>Fantasia</I>," <I>Make Mine Music</I> (1946) was the first of the "package features" Walt Disney released after World War II. Instead of Bach and Beethoven, the artists illustrated segments set to popular music by Benny Goodman, Dinah Shore, and the Andrews Sisters. Originally set to Debussy's "Claire de Lune," "Blue Bayou" remains an atmospheric evocation of the Everglades. "The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met" is a charming fantasy about a cetacean with an extraordinary voice. "Peter and the Wolf," based on the Prokofiev score, offers brightly colored designs, but the narration by Sterling Holloway seems superfluous. "All the Cats Join In" is an upbeat evocation of the Bobby Sox era, but "Casey at the Bat" and "Johnny Fedora and Alice Bluebonnet" feel self-conscious and unfunny.<P>"Two Silhouettes" combines rotoscoped images of Ballets Russes de Monte Carlo stars Tatiana Riabouchinska and David Lichine with kitsch cupids, sparkles, and hearts. "The Martins and the Coys," a spoof of a hillbilly feud, has been excised in a bow to modern taste. The supplemental material includes <I>The Band Concert</I>, the first color Mickey Mouse short and one of the character's finest performances, and <I>Music Land</I>, a quirky Silly Symphony about clashing musical styles. <I>--Charles Solomon</I>

I ordered this dvd for my children not only for its content - songs I remember from my childhood, like "Johnnie Fedora and Alice Bluebonnett", but also to share with them a unique collection of musical variations not expressed today.
Loved it!

When I received the package containing my purchase, I opened it carefully.
I noticed the magnetic "Security Bar" was loose in the bottom of the box. When I performed an examination of the product, I found a scratch on the playing side. When I played the CD it would skip on of the selection of Casey at the Bat. I am very unhappy with this product.

3 out of 5 stars Make Mine Music.......2007-01-20

A lower budget production that was released between the bigger ones during the 1940's but never the less, a real charmer. The opening number in the animated presentation involving ten parts is 'A Rustic Ballad', and starts the show off in great style. From there the pace alternates between faster and slower with a wind up to the finale of the well known 'The Whale Who Wanted to Sing at the Met', titled 'Opera Pathetique'. The third item 'A Jazz Interlude' was the highlight for me with the superb Benny Goodman musical track providing the background for some of the best 1940's animation you could hope to see. Other musical stars of the period such as Nelson Eddy, The Andrews Sisters, Jerry Colonna and Dinah Shore who feature on the soundtrack show how well Walt Disney was able to add such a wonderful touch of quality and appeal to this release.

5 out of 5 stars My review on Disney's "Make mine music".......2007-01-10

Another classic from the Disney studio that is a 'must have'for all film buffs & collectors. The delivery and service for posting /receiving this dvd was excellent also.

5 out of 5 stars Lots of Good Memories!.......2007-01-03

Originally I was trying to find a particular cartoon short that my son remembered from when he was just a couple of years old. He's 21 now, and I finally found the cartoon that he remembered on this DVD. I watched it before I sent it to my son, and it all started coming back to me...songs, characters, fantastic animation, all from way back in a much more innocent time. My son called me after receiving and watching it and said that he absolutely loved it! Now he can't wait to have kids of his own to share this great DVD with!

Just as Roberto Benigni found himself on the receiving end of some finger-wagging for making a comedy set during the Holocaust, so the great Ernst Lubitsch caught some heat for this extraordinary 1942 satire set behind enemy lines during World War II. In his best performance on film, Jack Benny stars as Joseph Tura, the lead actor and head of a Polish theater troupe that is suddenly enlisted as a Resistance organization when an American pilot (Robert Stack) requires protection. The twist is that the pilot has been having a series of trysts with Tura's wife (Carole Lombard), the hilarious evidence being the disruptive departure of Stack's character from a theater audience each night as the hammy Tura unknowingly cues the lovers by launching into Hamlet's famous soliloquy. The remarkable script by Edwin Justus Mayer ingeniously folds the tensions of a betrayed marriage into the comic suspense surrounding Tura and company's efforts to pull off a <I>Mission: Impossible</I>-like sting on the local Nazi command. Many unforgettable moments and lines of dialogue adorn this black comedy, and the performances--most memorably Sig Ruman's crisp volleys with Benny--are a dream. Above it all, however, is Lubitsch's unmistakable Continentalism, his accent on Old World manners especially in a dangerous situation, suggesting the Nazis' very vulgarity was a reflection of their profound evil. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Amazingly funny Wartime movie.......2007-06-16

At first I was amused at the story and especially the performance of Jack Benny. Imagine him, in tights, performing Hamlet... "To be or not to be..." with that famous bland look on his face. Maybe it's having grown up with listening to him on the radio and then watching him on TV, that I so much enjoyed him here.

But after thinking a bit about the movie, I moved from being merely amused to being quite amazed at how this movie was so able to portray truly horrific events in a comedic way, during the time of the actual war.

We've seen a lot of movies that show the misery of war. We've seen some that managed to make former wars funny (MASH comes to mind, which showed the Korean War, while we were in Viet Nam). I can't think of any that managed to pull off comedy while everyone who was making it and watching it was still at risk,, with the possible exception of Stalag 17..and I'm not sure when that came out. Can you imagine a comedy featuring Osama ben Laden or Saddam Hussein or whoever our current enemy is supposed to be? Maybe if we laughed at our enemies more we'd disarm them....

This makes me want to see the Mel Brooks version. He's another genius who understands real comedy.

5 out of 5 stars Humor at its best.......2007-01-10

I discovered Lubitsch's oeuvre as a teenager and since then he has remained one of my favourite movie directors. Great plans, suggested sexual innuendo in the perfect European way with lots of (not obvious) puns, a quality of photography that makes the light around the actors shine like a halo, integrating Shakespeare's texts in the plot of the 1939 invasion of Poland is a coup de maitre! The movie was made during the war itself and as such, is a strong denunciation of the enemy, probably stronger than the more "in-your-face/full-of-blood" classic war movies. Lubitsch must have been a great optimist and even his earlier and rarely seen or acknowledged "Broken Lullaby" (about World War 1), which is maybe his only "tragedy" movie, keeps the hope alive.
My children, age 11 and 17, who had never ever watched a Black and White movie (how prehistoric!) loved To Be or Not To Be. I am hopeful that they will show this classic to their own children too.

5 out of 5 stars Funniest movie of all time.......2007-01-04

This is by far the funniest movie ever made. Robert Stack looks all of seventeen. Jack Benny is young, but already has all the timing and mannerisms we saw in the early days of TV on the Jack Benny show. Carole Lombard (this is the last movie she ever made--she died in a plane crash soon after)is a comedic genius at the height of her talent. Listen carefully. You won't want to miss a single hilarious line.

3 out of 5 stars Mediocre classic.......2006-12-04

I watched it when a child and I didn't like it or find it funny. I watched again after many years and I am of the same opinion. Nevermind the poor quality of my Region 2 Spanish dvd transfer, it is a dated classic. Its humor has not lasted well. Its dialogue, although witty at times, cannot do enough to recuperate from mediocrity this theatrically-oriented film. I have seen much better films by Mr. Lubitsch; comedy wasn't his 'forte', I'm afraid (though a few are really good, I like his dramas best).

Of course for those who like to spend time analyzing the subliminal messages of what they watch there must be quite a few paralellisms to reward their interest, as for me, the film did not click at all. So much so that whatever lies deeper than the superficially visible and audible of this story is of no concern to me.

I love old movies, not least silent ones, but this one reminds me of all the people who say they don't like them generally, and I know what they mean. I respect that people may like it, as it seems there's a lot of good reviews here, but I just don't see anything special in it.

5 out of 5 stars Luminous Lombard and a Never-Better Benny Light Up Lubitsch's Classic Nazi Satire.......2006-07-26

There is a certain sense of melancholy I feel when I watch this 1942 classic Ernst Lubitsch movie, as it represents the last appearance of the luminous Carole Lombard, surely the most breathtaking and high-spirited of actresses during Hollywood's golden era. In a rush to get home to husband Clark Gable after a successful war bond tour, she died in a plane crash during the film's post-production, and as the result proves without a doubt, the world lost one of the great treasures of the silver screen. She and co-star Jack Benny play Maria and Joseph Tura, the egocentric stars of a Polish acting troupe who are caught in the 1939 Nazi invasion of Warsaw. As a world-class flirt, she is carrying on with a handsome young pilot named Stanislav Sobinski, and their trysts begin once he hears his cue to get up from his theater seat, Hamlet's famous opening line to his soliloquy as spoken by an increasingly perturbed Joseph.

The romantic triangle quickly takes a backseat to an espionage thriller involving a German spy named Professor Siletsky, who holds the names of members of the Polish underground. His intention is to kill them, but the acting troupe, now with their theater in ruins, band together to stop him. This includes the need for the extremely vainglorious Joseph to impersonate Siletsky in front of the befuddled Colonel Ehrhardt and for Maria to seduce any Nazi official who stands in their way. While it sounds like a piece of wartime propaganda, the film actually becomes more farcical even as people are getting killed.

As Joseph, Benny has never been better, conveying both self-absorption and cunning expertly, and the script by Edwin Justus Mayer and an uncredited Lubitsch gives him a number of great one-liners. With her honey-toned voice and smoky elegance, Lombard is at the top of her game as the seductive Maria, as she dexterously shows her comic and dramatic sides with precision and unparalleled style. Delivering her lines with subtle finesse, she provides a strong match for Benny. Sixty-four years later, and there is still no one who can touch her. The rest of the ensemble is memorable starting with Sig Ruman's hilarious turn as Ehrhardt. A fresh-faced Robert Stack, all of 22, plays Sobinski with a callow, zestful energy, while Felix Bressart excels as the ultimately heroic Greenberg.

The movie makes direct commentaries on the concentration camps, and the satirical aspects are blissfully unapologetic. The stylishness of the comedy in light of the virulent wartime setting is what makes the film memorable and it proves what a master Lubitsch was at this level of subtlety. The 2005 DVD comes with two extras both featuring Benny - an ancient twenty-minute comedy short from 1930 called "The Rounder" and a brief commercial for war bonds. I wish they could have included some tribute to Lombard as it would have been fitting on this disc.

The tribulations of Tommy and Dick Smothers and their popular late-'60s television show are detailed in Maureen Muldaur's interesting 92-minute documentary. Viewing the clips from <I>The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour</I>, one might find it hard to imagine that they were considered controversial at the time; indeed, the jabs at censorship, gun ownership, the Vietnam war, and more seem mild by today's raunchy standards. But controversial they were, especially to CBS, who aired (and eventually canceled) the Smothers' show. Turns out that Tommy, the "dumb" one, was in fact a gadfly who turned the program into a cause célèbre somewhat beyond its actual significance; and in the end, as one of the talking heads featured here points out, it was the Smothers' decreasing sense of fun that really doomed it. Both brothers are interviewed, as are writers Rob Reiner and Steve Martin and others. DVD extra features include bios and an excerpt from a book on the subject. <I>--Sam Graham</I>

I first saw The Smothers Brothers in an interview on the Dick Cavett Show. Tommy seemed to be the funnier brother, but they played well off of each other, and I wanted to see more. I found this documentary and grabbed it up. I learned so many things about the show that I never would have expected. I had no idea that Steve Martin was affiliated with it, that Tommy was such a huge force behind the show, or that it was anywhere near as political as it was.

Filled with interviews from the Smothers Brothers and their affiliates, this documentary explores the power of the show and its demise. Aired during a very poltically explosive time in US history, the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour reflected the times in a clever way. The brothers were clean cut products of the 1940s and 50s; their appearance was non-threatening. This allowed them to reach large audiences and attack controversial issues. Finally, their candidness and distaste for censorship did them in, but the show was ahead of its time.

The clips included in this video are only teasers for what I'm sure the show really could be. It is unfortunate that it has never been formally released to the public. I'm sure it'd be a bit hit, as the format seems to be a cross between a talk show and Saturday Night Live types of sketches.

1 out of 5 stars Hindsight is something to look at in the mirror.......2007-02-14

The shows of these guys blew me away each week I tuned in. I won't buy this DVD because of the political statements I have no desire to see or hear. Let the politicions do their job and the actors do theirs. The series would make a lot of money if put on DVD. There were few better people on TV than Jack Benny, Joan Biaz, Bob Hope, Johnny Carson, etc. It was an era never seen before or, I suspect, since.

5 out of 5 stars Intelligent Presentation.......2007-01-18

I bought this for my husband for Christmas and he was very pleased with it! As a huge fan of this show he admires it even more considering the social upheaval and political times it was set in and the intelligent, clever ways that the Smother's Brothers found to put a different light on events of the day. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The more things change, the more they stay the same!.......2007-01-12

What a wonderful documentary on the struggles of the Smothers Brothers to speak out publicly and without censorship on the important issues facing our country. That the administration of that time worked so tirelessly to whitewash their criticism of a divisive war and that they had a major broadcasting company so completely under their spell... Sound familiar? Watching this taught me that the more things change, the more they stay the same. Well worth watching. In fact it should be required viewing in high schools all over the country.

5 out of 5 stars The BEST DVD Set Of Live Benny Broadcasts.......2006-04-17

The last reviewer I am afraid has missed the point completely of what this DVD release is supposed to be. A public domain company like GoodTimes does *not* release episodes of the Benny show from the more commonly seen filmed episodes that aired for years afterwards in syndication. These are kinescopes of *live* Benny shows broadcast in the early 1950s, and as a result they come from source elements that will NEVER look as good as the filmed shows. That's just the nature of the beast one deals with if one wants to see these live shows from the 1950s again, whether they're Jack Benny or Burns And Allen. So it's not fair to dismiss this set just because one is seeing kinescopes instead of filmed programs.

Secondly, this set is of all the Benny sets put out by public domain companies is the BEST one available and should be picked up over all others that market the same episodes with some variations. The reason why Good Times is the one to get is because they are the only company I know of that leaves the episodes uncut, which means leaving the original commercials for Lucky Strike cigarettes alone. Other companies hack these out in an annoying fashion, but here the show plays uncut just as it first aired and on the Benny shows this is a must, because his commercials were always integrated into the program itself.

Don't dismiss this set based on the first reviewer's lack of understanding of the source elements and the kinds of programs that end up on the PD releases. This is the one to get if you want to see vintage live TV as it should be experienced.

1 out of 5 stars DEFECTIVE DVDs - AND TERRIBLE SOURCE MATERIAL.......2005-04-07

Not only are these transferred from terrible source material (interestingly, with an initial disclaimer stating they were made from the best source material available), but most critically, one cannot SKIP from scene to scene - or even episode to episode!! You are locked in Lousy-Source-Material-Purgatory.

Do NOT purchase these. Good Times Video has a real problem on their hands with this poorly thrown together release.

When, oh when, will somebody do right by Mr Benny?
