Story? What story? All a movie like Shanghai Noon needs is the amazing stunt set pieces featuring kung fu superstar Jackie Chan and the drolly caffeinated ramblings of Owen Wilson (and to be sure, that's all it gets). It's a buddy comedy about Roy O'Bannon (Wilson), a minor, borderline incompetent desperado, and Chon Wang (Chan)--Roy thinks he hears (and scoffs at) the name "John Wayne"--a member of the Chinese Imperial Guard searching for a kidnapped princess (Lucy Liu). They become reluctant partners in the Old West (Roy, who considers Chon his sidekick, is hurt to discover that the bounty on Wang's head is more than his own), brawling, drinking, bathing, and bonding and in general having mildly amusing adventures together, while eluding a posse and other random enemies.

There's not a lot of focus to the plot or much motivation for characters to turn up where and when they do--just what was achieved by the much-discussed trek to Carson City, anyway? But Chan's inventively staged battle sequences (particularly an early one in which he uses flexible, resilient trees to best some Crow Indians) are predictable highlights. You'll wish there were more to some of them, but as with his many of other films, you'll want them on video to watch in slow-motion to see how he pulls them off. And in a potentially star- making role, Wilson's loquacious, hyper-self-conscious meanderings--he's funny even when his lines aren't--make him seem less like a character than a very amusing deconstruction of one. Chan and Wilson are entertaining together, even though they're both off in their own little worlds. Think of it as Butch Cassidy and the Shanghai Kid, and you won't be too far off. --David Kronke

Shanghai Noon.......2007-03-10

The DVD was a gift for my sister and the first DVD sent to her was defective. Half way through playing, it stopped and went back to the beginning. I contacted Amazon and the DVD was replaced free of charge. I was very very pleased with how the whole thing was handled. Amazon even reimbursed me for the shipping I paid to return the first DVD. The second DVD plays fine and my sister is very pleased. Thank You Again

Jackie says he'd had the idea for this movie for years. I think it wasn't until he came to the US that he could do it justice. Yeah, Jackie's biggest fans usually prefer his Hong Kong films, but you gotta admit that this is a movie that would've been hard to make in Asia.

Jackie's sidekick in Shanghai Noon is a great comedian. He has a look and a voice quality that is very unique. Perfect casting for the part. The jail house scene between the two is priceless.

I also really like the music right from the beginning. The music sets the mood and really supports the action.

The settings are also quite interesting. The Forbidden City scenes, though brief are really cool (I'd like to know where they really filmed that), and the outdoor mountain scenes are inspiring.

Two thumbs up!

Shanghai Noon DVD.......2007-01-04

What a great movie! We love this one. It is a great addition to our DVD collection. I only wish they would have included the song "I Wanna Be A Cowboy" rather than this Uncle Kracker song on here. Great buy, I highly recommend it!

Like The Gumball Rally (1976) before it, former stuntman Hal Needham's The Cannonball Run was inspired by the same real-life cross-country road race. If The Gumball Rally was the critical favorite, The Cannonball Run was the box-office favorite (spawning the almost-as-successful sequel, Cannonball Run II, a few years later). Aside from top-billed stars Burt Reynolds and Dom DeLuise (stars of Needham's Smokey and the Bandit series) plus Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. (as horny priests), the movie features many of the same actors (Bert Convy, Jamie Farr) that could be found on a typical '80s episode of The Love Boat (along with the same caliber of writing). But as the tagline notes, "You'll never guess who wins"--and it's true. As in most road-race movies, it's the journey that counts, not the destination. This particular journey includes cool cars (like Adrienne Barbeau's black Lamborghini), crazed bikers (led by Peter "Easy Rider" Fonda), hot martial arts action (from Jackie Chan as a Japanese racecar driver), a conspicuously braless Farrah Fawcett (recipient of a Golden Raspberry nomination for her performance), and possibly the most egregious use of product placement featured in a movie up until that time (one vehicle has "GMC Trucks" noted prominently along the top of the windshield, another has "Hawaiian Tropic" painted on the hood). I have never understood the critical dogging of this film. What were people expecting to see? It's a low-budget, screwball comedy that is just fun to watch. You could tell that the actors were just having a good time and it helps to make the film that fun to watch. As such, the performances aren't that bad. For example, try to watch Jack Elam in this and picture him in all of those serious, nasty villian roles he had in westerns. Sammy Davis and Dean Martin working together is almost worth the price alone. Their great chemistry is apparent. Frank Sinatra wanted to be in the sequel after seeing them in this. Roger Moore may have only been doing a parody of himself, but I have always wanted to see him do more comedy. He was known for helping to maintain a light-hearted atmosphere during the long filming of the Bond pictures. Also, this is the only one of Jackie Chan's (who actually does race cars) early Hollywood films that shows his talent for mixing martial arts and comedy. Who cares if he doesn't look japanese (which his character is supposed to be). Hollywood wouldn't realize what they had been missing until the success of Rush Hour. Hal Needam (Smokey and the Bandit) was just making a film to entertain, not educate or win oscars. And, it worked. Fast cars, laughs and great looking ladies (Adrienne Barbeau, yow!). I have grown tired of critics reviewing all films under the same guidelines instead of for what they are. I would have given it five stars but it was not quite as laugh-a-minute as some of the works of Blake Edwards, Billy Wilder and Buster Keaton and I would have liked to seen more car stunts.

Better than your average sequel, Shanghai Knights almost defies the law of diminishing returns. Lacking the freshness of Shanghai Noon, it compensates with a looser, disposable plot that plays to the strengths of costars Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson. It's 1887, and odd-couple heroes Chon Wang (Chan) and Roy O'Bannon (Wilson) are in London to retrieve the Imperial Seal of China, stolen by an English lord (Aidan Gillen) who killed Wang's father in his quest for the British throne. Wang's lithe and lovely sister (Fann Wong) joins the battle with high-kicking force, appealing to Roy's roguish charm and surfer-dude anachronisms. While Chan continues his transition to safer stunts and good-natured homage to Buster Keaton, Gene Kelly, and other Hollywood legends, Wilson indulges the party vibe to good effect, maintaining the anything-goes approach that allows silly encounters with Jack the Ripper, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and a Dickensian urchin named Charlie Chaplin. The heroic storey Chon Wang continues in Shanghai Knights the hilarious sequel to the successful Shanghai Noon. In this storey it has been a couple of years since Jackie Chain and Owen Wilson last rip roaring adventure. As the story starts of Jackie father who has protected the emperor's seal for over ten generations is brutal murder in Shanghai. Getting word from his sister Lin Jackie goes to New York to reunite with his old sidekick Roy "O' Bannon, played by Owen Wilson. Together with the aid of his sister line they must track down there killer. Which pulls them into a despicable plane set by the evil son of the former emperor and a selfish English prince to take the position of the royal throne on as the emperor of china and the other as the king of London will there dastardly plan to wipe out the rest of the royal family go through find out in the action packed conclusion. A word of warming due to several scenes in this movie with heavy Konfu action sequences and several brief scenes with heavy sexual content I do not recommend this two any one under thirteen. If you are 13 to16 years of age or older this movie should be fine for you.

Another uninspired sequel.......2006-11-10

Chon Wang (Jackie Chan) and Roy O'Bannon (Luke Wilson) reunite to recover the Imperial Seal of China and avenge the death of Chon's father, the Keeper of the Seal. They are joined by Chon's sister, the beautiful and equally dangerous Lin (Fann Wong). The chemistry of Wilson and Chan is as delightful as ever, but that (and the beautiful and talented Wong) is about the only reason to watch this tired comedy. Even the action scenes are uninspired. A disappointment.

Shanghai Knights, brings to the screen the continuing adventures of Chon Wang and Roy O'Bannon. Picking up a few years after Shanghai Noon, the amazing duo heads to London, England, in an effort to retrieve the Imperial Seal of China and avenge Wang's father's death. The story gets a bit more complicated when all is not as it seems in 19th Century England...
Jackie Chan, Owen Wilson, Fann Wong (who is GORGEOUS!!!), and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows allowing for a highly entertaining movie that can be watched over and over again.
The plot, the setting, the dialogues, the humor, and the music are all EXCELLENT.
In short, Shanghai Knights is a movie definitely worth watching and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection! 4½ Stars

ORIGINAL IS BETTER~!.......2006-02-05

If you want UNCUT ORIGINAL version, ALWAYS look for ORIGINAL LICENSED Production. NOT US Release. Its a foreign film, it should not be US version to begin with~! HELLO!!!?? Why settle for LESS with US Version where they edit and cut so many excellent scenes especially with Jackie's Fighting Scenes. And US Release ruins the speed and sound as well. I have been collecting Jackie Chan's movies both HK and US Release Version for quite some time now. I found HK Version to be MUCH MORE in enjoyable, and HIGHER in Quality. American Market always like to "Americanize" and "Control". Regional Code Regulation thing is one of the example to CONTROL the Market. Why not let everyone enjoy the same HK Original Release move the same way ENTIRE WORLD enjoys it ?? No one makes Hollywood American movies to "French version" or "Chinese Version" ~! This what Americans are doing~! Well, enjoy the cheap "American version" then~! LOL

The plot line may sound familiar: Two mismatched cops are assigned as reluctant partners to solve a crime. Culturally they are complete opposites, and they quickly realize they can't stand each other. One (Jackie Chan) believes in doing things by the book. He is a man with integrity and nerves of steel. Directed by Brett Ratner, Rush Hour doesn't break any new ground in terms of story, stunts, or direction. It rehashes just about every "buddy" movie ever made--in fact, it makes films such as Tango and Cash seem utterly original and clever by comparison. So, why did this uninspired movie make over $120 million at the box office? Was the whole world suffering from temporary insanity? Hardly. The explanation for the success of Rush Hour is quite simple: chemistry. The casting of veteran action maestro Jackie Chan with the charming and often hilarious Chris Tucker was a serendipitous stroke of genius. Fans of Jackie Chan may be slightly disappointed by the lack of action set pieces that emphasize his kung-fu craft. On the other hand, those who know the history of this seasoned Hong Kong actor will be able to appreciate that Rush Hour was the mainstream breakthrough that Chan had deserved for years. Coupled with the charismatic scene-stealer Tucker, Chan gets to flex his comic muscles to great effect. I get a kick out of this movie. The way Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker interact and play off each other is so hilarious. Jackie Chan's Hollywood career got a second break with Rush Hour and the plot has more substance than most Jackie Chan movies.

We got James Carter, played by Chris Tucker, who is an LAPD detective with a penchant for dancing Michael Jackson-style while blowing up blocks of buildings. This gets him into trouble with his sergeant who, at the request of the FBI, assigns him to a case where he ends up being a nurse maid to Lee (Chan), a Chinese detective who has just broken up a huge smuggling ring in Hong Kong. The FBI want Carter and Lee to not interfere with the investigation of the kidnapping of the Chinese Consul's daughter, but Lee and Carter do anyway, in their own charismatic manner and triumph where the FBI fail.

The martial arts expertise of Jackie Chan is fantastic and shows that his truly a master in what he does. Chris Tucker does a terrific job of playing the off the wall LAPD officer who trys to keep Chan's character out of the way of an investigation. Chris Tucker is an extremely well disciplined actor, and seems to go very smoothly with the styles of Jackie Chan. Not only is the action part of the movie good, the now common jokes in martial arts movies are all there, including many racial/cultural difference jokes not necessarily making fun of races, but the cultural differences. Rush Hour is nothing to take seriously, but it is fun to watch.

One of my favorite movies!.......2007-03-07

Detective Carter (Chris Tucker) who has the fastest mouth in the L.A. police force has an assignment to track down a Chinese Consular's daughter with the help of Hong Kong detective Lee (Jackie Chan). The Two aren't getting along quite well for Carter thinks everything is his way, for Lee the mission is important but eventually along the way they become friends and must stop the international criminal mastermind behind this.

Phenomenal and entertaining action-comedy that has the right ingredients to make one of 1998's most popular movies! Chan and Tucker make a great team together. The movie has a perfect mix of action, laughs, and stunts from Chan, it's the best work Brett Ratner has done and the sequel is even better.

The DVD has crisp picture and sound with cool extras like audio commentary, isolated score, Deleted scenes, featurette, a short film, the theatrical trailer, DVD-Rom extras and music video by Dru Hill.

I was impressed with this transfer to Blu-Ray. Resolution was great, although colors and detail not as vivd (due to reproduction from old film). Still, better than some of the newer BRD releases such as Legend of Sleepy Hollow (stay away from that one).

The definitive copy of Enter the Dragon for any Bruce Lee fan. The movie itself looks as good as it ever has. The single disc also includes something like 3-4 hours of Bruce Lee documentary including home video footage of Bruce training, and footage from him at martial arts expositions. The interviews are excellent throughout. Finally the real big plus is that it includes a new release of all available unedited footage from Game of Death.

It's basically Enter the Dragon, plus all the actual Bruce footage from Game of Death, and all the documentary you will ever want to watch.

This is an excellent martial arts movie, the never seen before for HD-DVD. Has an excellent video transfer and a good sound not the best sound possible, but an excellent movie to see.

Greatest martial arts movie of all time in HD!.......2007-04-19

I recently purchased a Playstation 3 and an HD LCD TV, and this is the first Blu-Ray disc that i have bought. Ive seen this movie dozens of times on TV, VHS and DVD and i thought i knew every fight scene back to front. Since seeing it today, i discovered how much i was missing in those old video formats. There really is that much more detail and smoothness in the images. Its a great showing for a 30yo movie. There is also a great deal of documentaries and extras if you dig that kind of stuff.

As for the movie itself...its a classic action movie with fantastic fight scenes, a convincing bad guy, funny bits, armies of dumb henchmen, hot chicks and Bruce Lee in his prime! What more could an action film lover want?

This is Jackie Chan's best movie. It is full of nonstop action and drama. Jackie Chan explodes with action in this movie. Some great action scenes, sewn in with a beautiful story and great music make this a Jackie Chan hit. I can't stop watching the ending fight. It is a great scene, and the movie was very well done. This is a vital part of any Jackie Chan collection.

This movie has heart. Jackie Chan does his usual un usual stuff, and hits the target.
The story is touching and and action packed. A great buy for any one who likes Jackie Chan, and wants to see some of his earlier stuff. Which I think is better any way.

The ultimate "Wow" movie.......2007-02-05

This movie is a non-stop adventure in "how did he do that" and "can he top this". While movies like Crouching Tiger and Heroe were as notable for their special effects as the stunts, Legend of Drunken Master shows that physical grace, athletic prowess, and, yes, guts can create an eye-popping experience for modern movie goers. This movie builds on one great set piece after another but when Chan's character really starts drinking....WATCH OUT! The last fight scene in the factory will have you rewinding and laughing in delight....it's that good. Highly recommended.

I have always been a fan of Kung fu flicks, I am the geek that discusses who could beat who in a fantasy fight for god knows what reasons. This movie (along with the previous drunken master) made me realize how intense his action sequences are and it propelled me on an entire new level of respect for Jackie. He does what he does best, and then some, while he is more famous for his fights, Jackie and the supporting characters displayed so much talent and emotion that it kept me glued to the movie without blinking. The movie is a perfect blend of comedy and action, there is never a dull moment in LoDM...

It's also fun to watch it intoxicated!

best Jackie Chan movie ever.......2006-08-19

Amazing. I have seen this movie at least a dozen times and it is still amazing. There is so much action, so much choreography that is impossible to take in every second of it after watching this only once. The Legend of Drunken Master has the best Jackie Chan fighting I have ever seen, but also a good story with a nice plot, good characters and villains, and dubbing that actually isn't too badly done.

The story has a good focus on family, and what Wong Fei Hung (Jackie Chan) must do in order to honor his family and his country by stopping thieves from stealing and exporting Chinese artifacts that represent China's history. Sounds a bit boring but the story develops nicely in the film. After the first 5 minutes, you may not care because the beginning of the movie has an incredible fight scene promising just some of the action yet to come. Some of the action scenes mid-way through the movie are so good, they are better than a lot of final fight scenes in other similar movies. By the time the final fight scene in this movie is over, you may not even have realized that 15 straight minutes passed by. It really is that long of a scene and it is very, very entertaining. Chan does not do many stunts in this movie, but rather displays his true and raw martial arts skills, specifically the uniqe form of Drunken Boxing.

If you have never seen a Jackie Chan movie and want to start, watch another one of his films first. This one is so good it might just spoil the rest!

Rush Hour 2 retains the appeal of its popular predecessor, so it's easily recommended to fans of its returning stars, Chris Tucker and Jackie Chan. The action--and there's plenty of it--starts in Hong Kong, where Detective Lee (Chan) and his L.A. counterpart Detective Carter (Tucker) are attempting a vacation, only to get assigned to sleuth a counterfeiting scheme involving a triad kingpin (John Lone), his lethal henchwoman (Zhang Ziyi, from Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), and an American billionaire (Alan King). Director Brett Ratner simply lets his stars strut their stuff, so it hardly matters that the plot is disposable, or that his direction is so bland he could've phoned it in from a Jacuzzi.

At its best, Rush Hour 2 compares favorably to Chan's glossiest Hong Kong hits, and when the action moves to Las Vegas (where Don Cheadle makes an unbilled cameo), the movie goes into high-pitched hyperdrive, riding an easy wave of ambitious stuntwork and broad, derivative humor. Echoes of Beverly Hills Cop are too loud, however, and stale ideas (including a comedic highlight for Jeremy Piven as a gay clothier) are made even more aggravating by dialogue that's almost Neanderthal in its embrace of retro-racial stereotypes. Of course, that's what makes Rush Hour 2 a palatable dish of mainstream comedy; it insults and comforts the viewer at the same time, and while some may find Tucker's relentless hamming unbearable, those who enjoyed Rush Hour are sure to appreciate another dose of Chan-Tucker lunacy. --Jeff Shannon

I really enjoyed the first Rush Hour but you can tell that Jackie Chan was given more control over the action in this one, the action is 10 times better than in the first one while the comedy stays at the same level.

Chris Tucker plays James Carter, a high-strung, motor-mouthed LAPD detective whose captain (Philip Baker Hall) is tired of his antics - and, yes, we've all heard that one before. The captain selects Carter as a candidate for an embarrassing job as a "babysitter" for Hong Kong detective inspector Lee (Jackie Chan), who has been invited to America by the Chinese consul (Tzi Ma), whose young daughter was violently kidnapped. The thing is, the FBI doesn't want a foreigner interfering with their investigation, so that's why they need somebody to "babysit" Lee and keep him away from the Feds.

On the surface, this is a routine, familiar cop movie combining some unoriginal elements - the "fish out of water", the "culture clash", the "mismatched partners" bits, etc. However, it turns out to be genuinely entertaining and funny; Tucker and Chan turn out to be a good team (Tucker is particularly funny), and they are surrounded by a capable supporting cast. One thing I must say is that the identity of the mysterious villain "Juntao" will be unfortunately easy for some to guess...but I won't say more than that.

Being a huge Chan fan I tend to enjoy his Hong Kong movies better where he has complete control and, although the plot sometimes suffer, the action is far superior to anything Hollywood has to offer (check out Legend of Drunkin Master). You can see he was given some control over the action in "Rush Hour 2," making it his best American movie to date. One of these days Hollywood will get smart and give Chan complete control over a movie (action wise, with his own people) with the big Hollywood budget and he will make the best action movie EVER!!
