Inspired by "Gulliver's Travels," the fantasy-adventure <I>Castle in the Sky</I> (1986) was Hayao Miyazaki's third feature, and helped to establish his reputation as a visionary in both Japan and America. The orphan Sheeta inherited a mysterious crystal that links her to the legendary sky-kingdom of Laputa. With the help of resourceful Pazu and a rollicking band of sky pirates, she makes her way to the ruins of the once-great civilization. Sheeta and Pazu must outwit the evil Muska, who plans to use Laputa's science to make himself ruler of the world. <I>Castle</I> echoes elements in Myazaki's earlier <I>Nausicaä</I>, and anticipates imagery in his later films, from <I>My Neighbor Totoro</I> to <I>Spirited Away</I>. Disney's new English dub, which features Anna Paquin (Sheeta), James Van Der Beek (Pazu), and Cloris Leachman (pirate matriarch Dola), is lively and close in tone to the original Japanese, if a bit talkier. The exciting flying sequences, appealing characters, and fantastic vision of a steam-powered future Jules Verne might have imagined make <I>Castle in the Sky</I> a must-have for fans of Japanese and Western animation. (Unrated: suitable for ages 10 and older: violence) <I>--Charles Solomon</I>

Description

The magic touch of master animator Hayao Miyazaki is visible from start to finish in CASTLE IN THE SKY -- an imaginative tale full of mystery and adventure. The high-flying journey begins when Pazu, a mining apprentice, finds a young girl wearing a glowing pendant and floating down from the sky. Together, they discover both are searching for the legendary floating castle, Laputa, and vow to unravel the mystery of the luminous crystal around her neck. Their quest won't be easy, however. There are air pirates, secret agents, and astounding obstacles to keep them from the truth -- and from each other. With spectacular animation, a fabulous musical score, and the voice talents of Anna Paquin (Sheeta), James Van Der Beek (Pazu), and Cloris Leachman (Dola), CASTLE IN THE SKY is an animated masterpiece you'll never forget!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movies... that some kids won't understand.......2007-04-30

I actually wouldnt recommend Castle in the Sky or Nausicaa for kids. when i say kids... i mean below 10 years old. They're too complicated and, i dont personally, but some parents might find the content a tad too violent. I wouldnt see any problem with 10 or 12 year olds seeing them as they could understand most of the concepts. I dont think these movies weren't really made for kids though. aside from Totoro, most of miyazaki's movies are made to appeal to either a certain group (Kiki was a message to the young women of japan), or to teenagers and young adults not because of violence, but because of concepts. Spirited away is an excaption to this in that it appeals to all ages young and old. If you want anime for children, some of that fake american made anime like Avitar: the last airbender or the french made Code Lyoko is a better choice. America hasn't really quite gotten the concept of making cartoon-style shows that appeal widely to adults and teenagers... so most of them are safe.

5 out of 5 stars One of Miyazaki's best!.......2007-04-05

Pazu is a young boy who works in the mines of his town. One day he's going about his business as usual, when he sees a light above the large mine and runs to see what it is. To his surprise, it's a girl his age, with a crystalline pendant hanging around her neck!

This is the beginning of Castle in the Sky, an wonderful adventure with just the right amount of adventure and comedy. Pazu soon realizes that the girl, whose name is Sheeta, is being chased by a sort of FBI--bowler-hatted government agents who will stop at nothing to capture her. He finds himself on a rousing adventure, which culminates in the beautiful Castle in the Sky.

(A side note: I can't help but compliment Mark Hamill of Star Wars fame on his great voice acting here. He does a wonderful job on the head secret agent Muska, giving him a tone of very real madness. Great!)

5 out of 5 stars Deja Vu.......2007-03-05

If you want to have an exciting time just as you see the films like James Bond movies, or Indie Jones series Miyazaki animation film as this one is just for you. Miyazaki often uses similar settings, ploys used in previous works and Castle In The Sky is no exception.

PAZU AND SHEETA
Pazu and Sheeta are the pairs exactly like his 1978 TV animation series Future Boy Conan. Pazu became less superhuman than Conan who has incredible power. Sheeta, however, is almost the same as Lana. It is bacause the basic movie plot was originally prepared for the sequel of Conan.

ECOLOGICALLY MOTIVATED
Most of the animation works he was deeply involved are themed with human and nature. Takahata's Heidi series in 1974 sets viewers closer to simple life in alps full of nature. Future Boy Conan in 1978 promotes ecologically friendly ideal community Highharbor. Naussica of The Valley of The Wind finds the heroine who stands between the antagonistic nature and human world. Castle tries to conclude that civilization who forgets firm soil withers away.

BOND FILM LIKE ACTION
That's what the movie is all about. Miyazaki's animation is vivid with action and each action seem so real we are enchanted instantly.

LAPUTA SO DISTANT
Contrary to our expectation the stay in Laputa floating kingdom is so short and I wish I could see the castle a bit longer.

SUPERGRANNY DOLA
Miyazaki films have lots of impressive old women characters such as Yubaba in Spirited Away and Dola in this film. Her street-smart yet with warm-hearted character gives the film the depth.

Verdict: Typical Miyazaki film enjoyable to wide audience.

5 out of 5 stars The old good vs. evil in a new exciting setting.......2006-10-09

This review is based on the Disney version of the movie, voiced by James Van Der Beek, Anna Paquin, Cloris Leachman, Mark Hamill and others. The basic premise is extremely simple - it's the old good vs. evil, science vs. nature scenario, but the animation and imagination is so cool that it looks much more complicated than that.

In case you were wondering, this is not based on the book "Castle in the Air" by Diana Wynne Jones. "Castle in the Air" is the sequel to "Howl's Moving Castle", which was also done in anime by the master Miyazaki. "Castle in the Sky" has roots in the story of "Gulliver's Travels" where Swift wrote about a flying city named Laputa, upon which this film is based.

Sheeta is a young girl, now an orphan, who was given an amulet by her mother before she died. It seems that lots of people are after the amulet, and after Sheeta is taken aboard an airship by creepy Government agents, the ship is attacked by a family of pirates. During the fracas, Sheeta falls from the airship, and it becomes apparent that the amulet is much more than a nice piece of bling-bling. She is rescued by a young boy named Pazu, who is also an orphan and works as an assistant to a mining engineer.

Both the pirates and the army are going all-out to get their greedy hands on Sheeta, and we learn that she is a vital link to finding the mythical floating city of Laputa, which is said to be packed with both treasure and advanced technology, securely hidden within a huge storm cloud.

The main characters, other than Sheeta and the heroic Pazu are Colonel Muska, a secret agent with huge ambition, Dola, domineering matriarch of the Pirate clan, and the General, leader of the armed forces.

Although more than two hours long, this action-packed family movie is never boring, but it does contain some amount of violence.

4 out of 5 stars THE SHEETA IS FALLING! THE SHEETA IS FALLING!.......2006-10-06

Pazu, a young boy, is looking for something to take his mind off the drudgery of working in a mine all day. He has to work because he's an orphan and he has to take care of himself. Then one day, inexplicably, he sees a pretty girl his own age floating slowly down from the sky with a glowing pendant around her neck. The girl's name is Sheeta and she had fallen out of a airship trying to get away not only from sky pirates, but also the government agents that had kidnapped her from her home. Both parties want the power behind the strange pendant and are willing to put Sheeta's life at risk to get it. Sheeta's only friend and ally is you spirited Pazu, whose dream of finding the mythical sky island of Laputa has an odd link to Sheeta's lineage.

Castle in the Sky is a beautiful piece of work that belies the fact that it was made 20 years ago. I really held both Pazu and Sheeta close to me because of the fact that these two kids have somehow managed to survive and even have positive outlooks on life without the benefit of having parents or family. You have to admire the strength of both of them, however farfetched it is in reality. Luckily, they do finally find the family relationships they never had with each other. I could very easily see the two getting married and living happily ever after when they get a little older. The thing that impressed me the most with Miyazaki's work on this film was that he was never afraid to use comedy. It was nice to have a laugh when the director's message became too weighty or the action got ahead of the story. Characterization was great. Animation was great. The story was the only part that seemed a little average. Still a great movie.

This MTV-produced drama only looks like an adaptation of H.G. Bissinger's expert dissertation of the church of high school football, <I>Friday Night Lights</I>. The energetic, breezy movie has none of the seriousness of Bissinger's book except on its basic level: in West Texas, high school football is life. Into this world comes Jonathan "Mox" Moxon (James Van Der Beek), a brainy, uncharacteristic jock who sits on the sideline reading <I>Slaughterhouse Five</I> until the West Caanan High School Coyotes All-Texas QB goes down with an injury. Suddenly the spotlight and the tyrannical ways of coach Bud Kilmer (another ace evil turn by Jon Voight) are on Mox and the light is white-hot. There have been several films that show tough, honest kids doing their best against the worst of small-town coaches (Tom Cruise in <I>All the Right Moves</I>, for one) but <I>Varsity Blues</I>, in its glossy style, takes a more curious turn: studying what happens when celebrity comes to the well-adjusted high schooler. Mox starts seeing the rewards of stardom: a six-pack under the counter, acceptance in school, even easy sex from the girl who goes after the starting quarterback (Ali Larter). Will Mox win the big game? Will he bend to the wills of his coach? Will he stay with his old girlfriend? The questions are easy enough to answer, but the film has an ace up its sleeve: Van Der Beek has the stuff to carry the movie. Fans of TV's <I>Dawson's Creek</I> will see a slightly grittier dreamboat here, and Van Der Beek's care with the role makes the most ludicrous parts--including a trip to a strip club--manage a certain aura. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

5 out of 5 stars fun and true.......2006-09-09

Okay, this is not a deep thought provoking documentary; it is, however, an uncannily accurate depiction of small town life in general and small town football in particular. Of course there are the riotous moments of teen insanity specifically unique to small towns (have you ever played quarters with a pet pig in your vicinity?) and Tweeder stealing the police car is just classic, no matter where you are from. Underneath the comedy, though, there is a lot of truth to these characters and this story. Football is a small town religion, and every Friday night is a worship service at the altar of the pigskin. The movie captures this feeling well, along with the frustration of feeling trapped in a small town and wondering if you will ever get out -- and if you do get out, where will you go? Nevermind that Van der Beek's accent is not terribly authentic, or that this ***spoiler alert*** has a somewhat sappy ending. If you grew up in a small town, you can probably put a name on each of these characters; if you didn't, get the movie and find out what it's like.

4 out of 5 stars "Good Moooning, Good Mooning, Good Mooning".......2006-07-10

The movie is based on a "piece" of everyone's life, in some small way, who have ever played football. Does it matter that HS kids get in a strip club and drink till 6:00am ? "NO" Does it matter that Hoss is sitting on a tailgate, drinking Jack like its water ... and shooting a shotgun, with the HS Football Field lights on ? "NOOOOO" !!!!

It is "Rocky" + "Friday Night Lights" + "Rudy" + "Stand By Me" = Varisty Blues.

If you played football, or ever hung out with the guys after a game, or ever LAUGHED at the guys who couldn't leave HS even after they graduated 9 years ago ... Then buy the movie, its worth it, and the soundtrack ROCKS !!!!

5 out of 5 stars Great Football Movie.......2005-11-14

This is by far my favorite movie about football. It is about football players playing in a small town where the dads wished they were still playing and the coach is mean son of a gun that has to get his way. It is very entertaining and and has some funny parts and some serious ones too. BillyBob and Tweeder provide tons of laughs in this movie. James Van Der Beek does a good job in this movie as the backup quarterback that becomes the star starting quarterback when the starter gets hurt. Jon Voigt also does a good job in this movie playing the mean coach. All in all this movie was extremely good with some great football action and some very funny moments.

5 out of 5 stars Varsity Blues.......2005-10-24

by Aaron Miller.

The starting quarterback Lance is injured. The second string quarterback steps up and takes his team to the playoffs.

A good action scene was when the offensive guard Billy Bob blocks for a game-winning touchdown. The football game showed great action when second string quarterback Mox goes and wins the game after the first string quarterback gets hurt.

I enjoyed the suspense of Varsity Blues, when quarterback Lance gets hurt. You didn't know if he will come back into the game. I also enjoyed the suspense in the scene where quarterback Mox takes his team to the playoffs and out of nowhere wins the game.

A good comedy scene is when Tweeter stole the cop car after getting drunk. A romance scene would be when Mox and his girlfriend went on a date. Another scene of drama would
be when Mox and his girlfriend make up.

If you enjoy football movies you should rent and watch Varsity Blues.

3 out of 5 stars Good movie, but not enough Paul Walker.......2005-07-28

Okay, I know this was a James Van Der Beek geared movie, but I wish it had shown more of Paul Walker's character. One of the most interesting things about the story was that Lance and Jonathan were best friends. We never really got to see how these guys actually worked through the strains that were put on their friendship by everything that happened - before and during the movie.

Jonathan had been in Lance's shadow for years. Everyone in town worshiped Lance, young and old. Then Jon became the star because Lance got hurt. Lance's girlfriend dropped him and went after Jon. Jon got into Brown Univeristy while Lance's dreams went down the drain. I mean, one trip to the the strip club and everythings okay?

Paul Walker is a good actor and could have done great with some meatier scenes and a bigger role. Too bad the director couldn't see that.

But that aside, Van Der Beek is good and Jon Voight was perfect as the coach.

A not-quite dazzling array of cinematic tricks (split screens, freeze-frames, running the film backwards, rapid editing, etc.) are used to depict college students floundering in the pursuit of love and meaning. Drugs, blow jobs, pornography, booze, rape, masturbation, '80s pop tunes, beatings, suicide, attempted suicide, faked suicide, loss of bladder control, and trite pseudo-philosophy are on display as pretty young actors with squeaky-clean images (like James Van Der Beek and Jessica Biel) attempt to dirty themselves up. <I>The Rules of Attraction</I> comes to life for about five minutes when an actor named Russell Sams appears for an outrageous restaurant scene, then slumps back into terminal disaffection when he departs. Also featuring Shannyn Sossamon, Faye Dunaway, Swoozie Kurtz, Ian Somerhalder, Kate Bosworth, Eric Stolz, Fred Savage, and many strikingly good-looking young people. The filmmakers are attempting to depict the vacuousness of today's youth but only succeed in portraying the void in their own hearts. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

4 out of 5 stars wow.......2007-06-15

Went into this one not expecting much, and was surprised. Very good.

1 out of 5 stars Truly horrible.......2007-05-26

This is one of the nastiest things I've sat through for a long time. I kept waiting for some hint of wit or wisdom to emerge but it simply cloaks its vacuousness with some pretentious flashback trickery. Every characterin it is repellent and despaired, sex-obsessed and self-absorbed; the violence and abuse is graphic and it has nothing to say about human nature beyond what we know happens to people who have lost touch with all decent values. I'm told that it is satirical but it's too witless to be trenchant or mordant in its observations and as for comedy - I'm afraid I could not laugh at its glorification of decadence. People who live like this live neither long nor happily but this film attempts more to legitimise and normalise their casual misery than to satirise it. Real "vomit of despair" - avoid it.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, dark, and very funny.......2007-05-21

Bret Easton Ellis is an awesome writer. I think his book "American Psycho" captures a certain essence of modern America that eludes most authors. It's difficult to say that about a book whose main character spends most of his time killing people in the most nauseating ways possible while working days as a Wall Street insider. Based on that plot summary alone, I would say you'd have to be insane to think "American Psycho" is a modern classic. It is, though. It's how Ellis captures the vacuousness of the elites, the absolute absence of any form of morality, which makes the book shine. Too, he captures the mindlessness of rampant consumerism perfectly. He takes it over the top, I think, but he does so only to emphasize the emptiness of his characters. Not surprisingly, his other novels look at the same ideas from different perspectives. "Less Than Zero" cast a scathing eye on the immoral goings on amongst wealthy 1980s youth in Los Angeles. Then there's "Rules of Attraction," a book, eventually made into a major motion picture in 2002, which does the same thing for wealthy college students. I think I detect a pattern unfolding here!

"The Rules of Attraction" exposes the antics unfolding at Camden College, one of those snooty, Ivy League type schools attended by the offspring of America's rich and famous. Let's meet the cast of characters, shall we? We've got Sean Bateman (James Van Der Beek), a drug dealer in hot water with his supplier Rupert Guest (Clifton Collins, Jr.). Lauren Hynde (the delightful Shannyn Sossamon) is a pretty young girl saving herself for her boyfriend Victor (Kip Pardue), who in turn is currently making the party rounds in Europe. Lauren's roommate Lara (Jessica Biel) likes to mix it up with the entire male population of Camden College. Paul Denton (Ian Somerhalder) is a chap that likes to swing both ways. He used to date Lauren before coming out of the closet, so to speak, and now has eyes for Sean Bateman, who he thinks swings both ways as well. I think that pretty much covers the main characters. We've got a host of minor actors in the unfolding story arcs--people like Candice (Clare Kramer), Kelly (Kate Bosworth), and Marc (Fred Savage)--to keep things popping. We also see Faye Dunaway and Swoosie Kurtz as parents in a particularly amusing sequence.

Whew! Just trying to keep track of the characters takes up most of your first viewing experience. You'll need to watch the film again to get the most out of it, however, because director Roger Avary employs a most unusual narrative technique to tell these characters' stories. When we first enter the movie, Sean's prowling about the infamous "End of the World" party held every year on campus. We hear him talking about himself and his actions in voiceover, a tactic used for other characters as well, before the weirdness begins. Scenes start rewinding at an incredible pace, zipping back through what we've already seen in order to take us to another character's sad tale of woe. We see Sean's problems with Rupert, Lauren's romantic difficulties, and lots of out of control partying. We learn that Sean receives love notes in his post office box that he thinks Lauren sent. The two meet but eventually drift apart before anything serious occurs. That's mainly the crux of the film right there: interesting things start to happen but don't due to inaction, misunderstandings, and a lack of communication. It doesn't help that the characters labor under vacuousness so total as to preclude meaningful relationships with anyone other than themselves.

I got a huge kick out of this movie. Then again, I also got a huge kick out of the film versions of "Less Than Zero" and "American Psycho". Others disagree, obviously, but I think Ellis's novels translate well to the screen. "Rules of Attraction" works under the capable guidance of Roger Avery. I think a lot of people complain about this movie, and by extension the other film versions of Ellis's books, because they don't understand the subject matter. You can complain about the film's lack of substance (not substance abuse, though, because there's plenty of that to go around), but that's the point. Ellis writes books that expose the various forms of decadence plaguing our society, and writes them in order to show the consequences on its practitioners. If you can't grasp that concept, you won't like this film. Then again, maybe you will if you like your humor as black as pitch. Let me cite two wickedly funny sequences in the movie as proof. One, the scene in which Sean attempts to take his own life had me howling with laughter. I watched it again and again, and it never lost its ability to amuse. Two, Victor's sojourn through Europe is a sight and sound experience one should not miss. Hilarious. If you still can't groove to the flick, two words: Jessica Biel.

You'll find great picture and audio quality on this DVD. Supplements include an intriguing 26 minute "Anatomy of a Scene" that explains how Avary and company pulled off an especially tricky piece of camera work involving Sossamon and Van Der Beek. We also receive trailers and television spots for the film, promotional material, and a commercial for the book. We also get SIX commentary tracks. One of them is a bonus commentary with comedian Carrot Top (?). The rest rely on the various actors and a few crewmembers. SIX COMMENTARY TRACKS! What were they thinking? If you listen to all of them, and I did, you'll spend days working your way through this disc's special features. I like the movie, I'm giving it five stars, and even I don't think I needed to know this much information about the film. What's surprising is that director Roger Avary isn't on a single one of these tracks! Weird. Anyway, enjoy the film. It's a keeper.

4 out of 5 stars Great Book Adaption, Not so Great Film.......2007-03-14

Despite many large and small changes to the characters and storyline (what little there is) of Bret Easton Ellis' book, "The Rules of Attraction" manages to stay completely faithful to the novel's spirit and tone. In this, it a far more successful adapation of Ellis' work than any film thus far. Roger Avary has created an incoherent, chaotic, frenzied work, full of unlikable, selfish characters. Anyone that's read Ellis' book knows that's exactly what it is. However, what works on page often does not work on film, and this film is a clear example of that. Even though the entire cast is great, and James Van Der Beek has never been better on the big screen, the film simply does not really click. I don't know if Avary could have made the film differently and still stayed faithful to the book, but the end result is a great book adaption and a not so great film.

My advice? If you've read and liked the book, you'll like the movie despite its big, glaring faults. If you haven't read or didn't like the book, don't see the movie.

1 out of 5 stars Awful.......2007-01-10

Spend your money for some other DVD. If you're interested in watching this movie, just rent it.

3 out of 5 stars Good cast, some laughs, but overall a semi rehash of other stories........2007-06-21

This movie is essentially the story of marraige of a couple the day before their marraige with the arrival of old college friend and the ensuing bachelor/bachelorette parties and the wedding. Included in the story as always is some distress/secret in the bride and groom past, now confronting them. Some of the friend had broken relationships now brought back together with their mutual friend put in an awkward position. Also, thier is the best man confronted with his own future and questioning his own marriage plans to his long time girlfriend. No suprises here, many of the wedding party end up "hooking up" during the course of the evenings party, and no major suprises with any of it. Trying to be Sixteen candles meets American Wedding...maybe a touch of breakfast club/pretty in pink, just not great as a knock off. check it out, I think many may like this one, but just not my cup of tea.

Sadly, playwright Wendy Kesselman's sensitive story about anti-Semitism is rather forcibly directed by former casting agent Billy Hopkins, as if this were not so much a feature film as a glorified after-school special for TV. Despite that, the film largely works on the strength of its two leads: Claire Danes, who plays a young Jewish girl identified as such at her private, coed high school, and Jeanne Moreau, who plays her grandmother, a Holocaust survivor. As Danes's character is increasingly shunned and becomes a target of bigotry and vandalism, Moreau's loving grandma helps keep her from going over the edge.

The film also concerns the high price of being different on many fronts. Not only is Danes's young heroine dissimilar to her friends because she's Jewish, she's also intense, keenly intelligent, and a poetry lover. When she falls for a callow stud at school who worries about the opinion of his idiotic friends, she feels for the first time the pain of being rejected for being who she is. Moreau is magnificent as the lifelong survivor who knows when to give her granddaughter refuge and when to push her into the real world to find her own footing. Danes's performance reads like a map of increasingly exciting things to come in her career; there are moments in this film when you look at her and can see the consummate actress in her future. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

Description

Hot young stars Claire Danes (LES MISERABLES, WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE'S ROMEO + JULIET) and Jude Law (COLD MOUNTAIN, THE TALENTED MR. RIPLEY) heat up the screen in this passionate story about fitting in ... and falling in love! Head-turning cute but painfully shy and self-conscious, Daisy (Danes) feels like a complete outsider at her stuffy New York prep school. So when she catches the eye of the coolest guy in school, Daisy is totally psyched ... but afraid that opening up too much might blow it for her. Also starring legendary Jeanne Moreau (EVER AFTER, THE SUMMER HOUSE), I LOVE YOU, I LOVE YOU NOT is the film that proves dreams worth having are definitely worth wishing for!

3 out of 5 stars JUDE LAW..YUMMI...WEIRD STORY.......2007-03-29

This was the 1st movie i saw with Jude Law and i fell in love with him right away. I think this story is very sweet at the begining but it is a little bit weird and confusing.. u gotta keep up with Claire Danes's character which is a weirdo girl. I bought this dvd a while ago but what i didnt like is that there is a part that they edited, where they are in the park and they start kissing and he is about to take off her top and she says "no, just wait..wait for me" something like that. THEY TOOK THAT OFF! man!

1 out of 5 stars My So-Called Holocaust Life.......2006-02-12

I am so angry at this film that it will be very difficult for me to contain the harsh words that are ready to spew from my mouth. This will not be a review for young readers. I Love You, I Love You Not was an atrocity from beginning to end. From both the disgustingly poor editing, to the sloppy acting, all the way to the horrendous themes that seemed to plot two random events together this film screamed "After School Special". In fact, now that I think about it, "After School Special" would be too delicate of a summary, it instead felt like a eager undergraduate film student attempting to be smart by attempting to poorly summarize the Holocaust with the turmoil of being a high school student. Hopefully the professor of this assignment saw the project and properly gave it the "F" it deserved. Hollywood completely outdid itself on this doozy of a film. I am surprised that the Jewish community didn't find this film offensive in the way that it trivialized the events of the Holocaust and compared them to the social troubles of a High School girl. I was upset by this occurrence, and I am not even Jewish. After this short film viewing, I felt dirty, upset by the Hollywood community, and ready to shout obscenities at everyone involved with this project. I Love You, I Love You Not was just another Hollywood attempt to monopolize on Claire Danes' My So-Called Life popularity while trying to be overly symbolic by involving the Holocaust. Is anyone else as sick as I am about this disgraceful marriage?

I do not understand at all what director Billy Hopkins was attempting to convey with this film. The themes were muddled in a slew of choppy editing and horrid flashbacks that left my mind in a confused knot. In one instance we had Danes unwilling to spend time with her grandmother, while in the next instance she was opening up everything in her life to her, while in the next she was making out with the mirror, and suddenly in the next she was asking Moreau to tell her a nightmarish bedtime story involving Robert Sean Leonard. Wouldn't that give anyone nightmares? It did give everyone nightmares and preempts our next step into the randomly anti-Semitic High School in which Danes attends. Unlike other films that use the Holocaust to show the injustices of the world, like in School Ties, this film randomly interjects the anti-Semitic moments near the end as if only to help strengthen already dead climax. Like nearly every scene in this film, the supposed "high-points" come and go nearly as quickly as modern fashion, leaving the viewer with nothing at all. I walked away of this film with an embarrassed look. While there may have been some attempt at meaning behind Billy Hopkins' camera, what eventually was released was a childish attempt to combine the trivial life of a High School girl to that of the monumental disaster known as the Holocaust. Could you put these two together? A great director probably could, but Hopkins' could not. All that it seems that he wants to create are meaningless dramatic plot-holes coupled with beautiful people.

Which, ultimately, leads me to the acting. While "abhorrent" would be a light word summarizing the purely absent acting of Danes, Law, and Van Der Beek, it is the only one that I could think of. Danes, using the same character structure from My So-Called Life in this film, could not find her way out of a paper bag if she tried. I could hear Hopkins in the background saying, "Give me more Angela Chase, I hired you for Angela, I WANT ANGELA". Her character is all over the place, manic depressive in one moment, happy the next, chaotic throughout, pitiful entirely. I loved the fact that she was a "reader", but one of the most ignorant characters created. You would think that with all the books she would have learned from them, sputtering quotes throughout the film, but alas, that never happened. Again, we were left with only Angela Chase. Award winning Jeanne Moreau bounces of the non-existent acting of Danes by providing her own character which does not fit into this film. Obviously disturbed by her time in Auschwitz, Moreau never develops this. She allows Danes to walk all over her, creating a weak grandmother and a needy, spoiled granddaughter. Throw in "boy-toy" Jude Law only for looks (because his character was as transparent as Saran wrap) and you have the worst cast in cinema. Nobody did any work with their characters, but instead walked around the set happy to be earning some, if any, money for their roles. I am surprised that both Danes and Law were able to pull themselves out of the I Love You, I Love You Not rut.

Overall, this was a confusing film that was only proven worse by torrential acting, very ill cinematography, a hasty Hollywood story (very obviously created by the infamous recycle machine), and by combining a trivial moment in a teenager's life with the historical hardships of the Holocaust. That would be similar to me trivializing the horrible deaths on the beaches of Omaha with me not getting a date for my Senior Prom. That just is painful to hear and visually see. The acting was non-existent, but obvious ploys to get a younger audience to attempt to connect with the story. The direction was nauseating. The constant flicking between present day and past stories kept me dizzied for days afterwards. Then, there was the uproarious casting of Robert Sean Leonard, I couldn't help but laugh when I continually saw him on screen. The only actor worth mentioning in this film was Julia Stiles, but that was because she kept her mouth shut. This was a disaster from the beginning and should be forgotten by all!

4 out of 5 stars Strong Women, trying times.......2005-05-09

How could I resist seeing what the pairing of Claire Danes and Jude Law would be like? Honestly, I would love to see them together again. Jude Law is actually not the most important character in this, the relationship that is the glue of this movie is between the Claire Danes character and her grandmother, played by Jeanne Moreau. They have a great sisterly bond, occasionaly one of them has to play the adult, but often it is just play. It was really touching to see.

Jude Law is the 'it' boy while Danes is the wallflower he is intrigued by but dissapointed to learn that no matter how charming he is, she is always going to be herself. Her intense, poetic and mysteriously sad self.

The back of the box really gave no indication of what this story was really about, which was kind of nice, I might not have picked it up, but it was compeltely missleading!

I really enjoyed this movie, and the way it interplayed Daisy's life with her grandmother's experience with being a German Jew during Hitler's reign. I wouldn't call it sad, but a very contemplative movie.

It would have been nice to see Law's character come to some sort of enlightenment, but all in all it was satisfying, because he isn't the focus. The focus is between these two strong, surviving women, and their relationship stands the test of the movie. Which I applaud completely.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting in idea, but fell through slightly..........2004-04-03

I liked this movie...alot, but it could have been alot better. Claire Danes, Jeanne Moreau, and Jude Law did excellent jobs. The problem wasn't in the acting, and wasn't really in the dialogue. the problem was taht at times it was hard to follow and some parts felt unresolved or unexplained. It would have been nice to see more of the relationship between Law's and Danes' characters. It also would have been nicer to have just a bit more on Law's character on his own and why he went with Danes' character. The dreams and quasi-flashbacks were also very hard to follow. Maybe if the movie had been longer and given a cleaner, but not necassarily perfect feel it would have been better. the anti-semetic letters she get and the reason for the break-up isn't very clear and if we had been able to see more than a few temporary moments of her relationship with her parents then we'd get a bigger picture of the character's problems.

I'd suggest it to anyone who is a fan of Claire Danes or Jude Law. Or just a good movie.

1 out of 5 stars CLIVE BARKER, YOU SHOULD BE ASHAMED!!!.......2007-06-10

Let me start off by saying that CLIVE BARKER'S THE PLAGUE isn't the worst movie I've ever seen. It had a promising start--all the children in the world under the age of nine lapsing into a comalike state, foaming at the mouth and no one knows why and they remain so for the next 10 years. Then they awaken as pissed off zombies intent on killing everybody. But despite all this, I couldn't get passed the CLIVE BARKER'S THE PLAGUE title. When I see CLIVE BARKER's name attached to a film or any project,I tend to expect a certain level of achievement in horror, I mean, this is the man who created HELLRAISER, for GOD'S SAKE!!! And let's not forget NIGHTBREED, another one of my all time favorites!! CLIVE BARKER'S THE PLAGUE bears absolutely no kinship to those films, other than the fact that you can buy them all at the same store on DVD. Otherwise, they would NEVER be grouped together, EVER.

So, ok. If, you get get past the whole CLIVE BARKER name thing, THE PLAGUE is an ok little zombie flick, if you overlook the glaring plot holes. I'm sorry, but if I know that zombies are going to be chasing me, I want a GUN!! Not a wooden stake, or a wooden post. I WANT A FRICKIN' GUN!!! But for some reason, this seemed to be not on the top of the list for these characters. Go figure. Maybe I just being nitpicky. But I thought it made perfect sense--zombie--gun!! Just don't watch CLIVE BARKER'S THE PLAGUE with any kids under nine--just in case---they just might turn into ZOMBIES on ya!!

1 out of 5 stars Clive Barker should be embarrassed .......2007-05-25

A strange virus affects all children under the age of nine. They suddenly go into foamy mouthed comas and experience seizures at 10 o'clock twice a day. Childbirth is in the process of being banned, because all children are born in comas.

Then, suddenly, 10 or so years later, the children wake up, and they're in really bad moods. Zombie-like, running around and wrecking havoc on their towns. They like to attack and bash people's heads and break necks.

Three friends, Tom, Sam, and Jean, after running from a school to a church, decide they need to make it to an air force base. But wait, the children have developed a "hive mind", and they're disabling all vehicles and learning to use and store guns.

There's only one thing that can stop them. The rambling diary of the church's priest leaves a clue that somebody must sacrifice a soul to these children to set them free.

That's about it, folks. As a lover of cheesy 'B' films, I can barely give this one an 'F'. To be short and to the point, there are no redeeming qualities to this film, very little gore, no suspense, no intrigue, no surprises, no monsters or daemons, no outstanding photography or soundtrack, no remarkable performances - nothing. If your curious, rent, but at your own risk.

2 out of 5 stars Plot...what plot.......2007-05-16

While the concept of the movie is interesting the follow through of the plot leaves much to be desired. The plague itself was interesting but the reasoning behind it was a little farfetched. As far as I understand it the children of the world (below a certain age) fall into a coma, and the only reasoning is that as a collective decided not to live in our barbaric world. Please....I could've made a better explaination. Try this on for size: Aliens were trying to take over through the use of younger generations, because something about their nature prohibits actual aggression. In reagards to the movie don't waste your time.

1 out of 5 stars Village of the damned.....but even more crappy.......2007-04-15

This movie begins with a very promising premise, a slow wasting apocolypse as the world's children, those under 9 that is, have lapsed into a coma for 10 years then the 'all hell breaks loose' scenario is enacted when they all wake up in a murderously foul mood. Yes, the dialogue is ridiculousy cliched but if you're interested in watching this, dialogue is probably a secondary concern but this movie lacks in all other areas as well, no gore, barely even any dribbling blood even with shots to the guts and head! The action of gun fights, as late rhte kids get weapons and learn to use them by 'sucking souls'; yea I thought that was stupid too, is nill, they stand in one place and fire one or two shots, a blasto-rama did happen, off-screen, the annoying friend of James' Vander Der Beek's character gets creamed with a deputy, they were armed, the kids were armed, WHERE THE HELL WAS THE GUNFIRE AND SPATTERING BLOOD?! The characers are inane and repeatedly make decisions that do eventually get them killed, it at least made me take comfort in the fact that they got killed no matter how boring (or off camera) their deaths were. The cause is never revealed and the finale well, became psuedo-religious dribble and really made no sense and utterly failed to close out the story.
My final word on this crap, avoid it; if they show it on the sci-fi channel catch it if you're curious other than that don't you dare pay a penny for this, Clive Barker deserves to lose money on this garbage! His name's on it but he didn't write it.

2 out of 5 stars Very disappointed in Clive Barker.......2007-04-09

I really like Clive Barker movies, but this one isn't that great. It lacked in many areas and didn't explain much at all about what was going on. The movie ended and all I said was "What?". I thought I would watch the special features and deleted scenes for the hell of it. I learned quiet a bit about what the movie was suppose to be after watching the deleted scenes. I don't know what the director was thinking when he deleted all of those important scenes, but it did fill in a lot of spaces about the movie. I still felt like there was no punch or excitement to the movie though. My guess would be is that this is another example of the director chopping and cutting the original writer's script and making a mess out if it. On the other hand, cutting all of those scenes could make for yet another DVD release being an "uncut and unrated" version. If you want suspense, I would advise you to pass on this one. If you want to see for curiosity sake, then rent it. I am very disappointed in this one.

This had to be among the top 100 dumbest shows ever. If you could stomach the lame often brainless dialoge and muti-season storylines that went no where, then you might just catch a sense that this was supposed to be about a romance between the two lead characters that was ultimately lost because they had idiots writing and producing it, and when people in charge make wrong decisons, it is ultimately the show and the Tv viewers that are the losers.

Rating: 90 out of 100
Recommended for: Wide range of moviegoers.

We've got Sean Bateman (James Van Der Beek), a drug dealer in hot water with his supplier Ruper
