Worry not, Disney fans--this special edition DVD of the beloved Cinderella won't turn into a pumpkin at the strike of midnight. One of the most enduring animated films of all time, the Disney-fied adaptation of the gory Brothers Grimm fairy tale became a classic in its own right, thanks to some memorable tunes (including "A Dream Is a Wish Your Heart Makes," "Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo," and the title song) and some endearingly cute comic relief. <table align=left cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0"> <tr><td align="center"> <img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/cinderella-slipper-small.jpg" border=0 align=top>
<span class="tiny">The famous slipper (click for larger image) </span> </td></tr> </table> We all know the story--the wicked stepmother and stepsisters simply won't have it, this uppity Cinderella thinking she's going to a ball designed to find the handsome prince an appropriate sweetheart, but perseverance, animal buddies, and a well-timed entrance by a fairy godmother make sure things turn out all right. There are a few striking sequences of pure animation--for example, Cinderella is reflected in bubbles drifting through the air--and the design is rich and evocative throughout. It's a simple story padded here agreeably with comic business, particularly Cinderella's rodent pals (dressed up conspicuously like the dwarf sidekicks of another famous Disney heroine) and their misadventures with a wretched cat named Lucifer. There's also much harrumphing and exposition spouting by the King and the Grand Duke. It's a much simpler and more graceful work than the more frenetically paced animated films of today, which makes it simultaneously quaint and highly gratifying. --David Kronke
<b>DVD Features</b>
For another of its classic films, Disney delivers another dazzling DVD with a gorgeous, razor-sharp picture and 5.1 sound. (Note: the 1949 film is properly presented in full-screen format, 1.33 aspect ratio, because widescreen films weren't made until the '50s.) The best part of the supplemental features is the archival material, the absolute highlight of which is two unused songs, "Cinderella's Work Song" (in which Cinderella imagines multiplying herself à la the Sorcerer's Apprentice) and "Dancing on a Cloud." <table align=right cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0"> <tr><td align="center"> <img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/cinderella-godmother-small.jpg" border=0 align=top>
<span class="tiny">Bippity-boppity-boo! (click for larger image) </span> </td></tr> </table> Because these numbers were never animated, they're accompanied by stylish illustrations from the Disney artists, and they're simply marvelous to look at. The artist of much of that material, Mary Blair, gets her due in a 15-minute featurette, while the better known "Nine Old Men" are the subject of a round-table discussion among some of today's top animators. In addition, a 38-minute documentary covers their contributions to specific characters of <I>Cinderella</I> as well as the film in general and the vocal cast. Also on the historical side is "The <I>Cinderella</I> That Almost Was," tracking the development of the project through decades of original Disney concepts, characters, and songs, including the 1922 silent "Laugh-o-Gram," which is also included in its entirety. <table align=left cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0"> <tr><td align="center"> <img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/cinderella-pumpkin-small.jpg" border=0 align=top>
<span class="tiny">The pumpkin transformed (click for larger image) </span> </td></tr> </table>
Additional musical material includes three radio programs and a short promo of the movie by Perry Como, in which he summarizes the plot amid some songs by the Fontaine Sisters, star Ilene Woods, and the host himself. Seven other unused songs (17 minutes total) are available in audio-only. The material for kids is on the sparse side, consisting of two music videos, Disney Channel personality Sally (from "Mike's Super Short Show") learning how to become a princess with the help of the <I>Extreme Makeover: Home Edition</I> crew and others, a minor dancing-princess feature, and a DVD-ROM design studio. Oddest extra: ESPN's "top Cinderella stories," including the 1980 U.S. Olympic hockey team and Joe Namath's New York Jets, although stories on Mia Hamm and tennis's Williams sisters should appeal to the film's primary target audience of young girls. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>

Magic Kingdom.......2007-06-10
One of the best fantasy Disney films . Fun and magic and imaginative; entertaining for adults and kids. However, talk about the message of -Cinderella being rescued by her Prince Charming- with your older children. (Such as "Girls you don't have to wait for Prince Charming to come along to solve your problems. Cinderella could have and should have been able to overcome her problems, herself. She actually was a strong individual and happy, despite her circumstances and she was creative by eliciting the aid and frienship of the mice and she had the belief that her faith would make her own dreams come true, etc.)."
My little girl's favorite.......2007-05-14
What can I say that hasn't already been said? Cinderella is the classic princess movie - and it actually has an OK message - if you keep on believing and being a good person, eventually something good will happen to you. And if you are vain, mean, nasty and vindictive, you'll never win the prince.
There are some other messages that are not as good, but overall, we love this movie. We dress up like Cinderella and sing cinderelly cinderelly every night now.
I'm glad my little girl enjoys the classic Disney movies that I did when I was young.
Brings back great memories.......2007-05-14
My boyfriend gave me this movie as a gift, I loved it so much I had to get one for my daughter. I just had to have one for myself. It brings back great memories. The color and sound are wonderful.
Worth the dough..........2007-05-13
Who doesn't love Cinderella? Love the set...love the movie..worth the price.
A Disney Masterpiece.......2007-04-15
Not much more praise can be said about this Disney classic. This dvd edition of the film is excellent. Many special features. The film looks stunning and sounds great as well. It's very worth buying.

Not the egregious foul it seemed to be in theaters, Hercules stands up as an entertaining spritzer of an animated feature. The continual peppering of in-jokes and cultural references becomes less irksome on video. That there's no majesty or awe invested in the beloved Greek legends also seems less of an error. Also on the plus side is the bounciest Alan Menken music since Little Shop of Horrors. With Zeus's blood in his veins, young Hercules's amazing strength makes him an outcast (sorry, that still doesn't fly), so he trains with a satyr named Phil to become a hero. Along the way Herc meets Meg, a common mortal who falls hard for him. They're both against the jocular Hades, who has to destroy Hercules to take over Olympus. The hydra is the computer-animated set piece for this little number, a no-chance attempt to beat that wildebeest herd from The Lion King. --Keith Simanton
Description
An outrageous odyssey of fun, fantasy, and adventure unfolds in the hilarious hit film HERCULES, Disney's 35th animated triumph "brimming with comic surprise!" (Entertainment Weekly) Taken from the gods as a newborn, adopted on earth, Hercules becomes an awkward teenage pillar of strength. Trying to fit in, he discovers his dad is Zeus and home is Mount Olympus -- if he can move from "zero" to true hero! Hercules teams with babyhood pal Pegasus, the flying stallion, and Phil -- a feisty personal trainer -- for the mission. But it's no easy task as he must match wits with Grecian beauty Meg and a comical hothead named Hades. With the help of Pain and Panic, Hades plans to rule the Universe with only Hercules standing in his way! With a bold animation style, colossal voice cast, and spectacular music, HERCULES is unmatched in strength -- delivering something for everyone with "pinwheeling, knockabout fun!"
Customer Reviews:
Good Film.......2007-06-12
I saw this in my class while studying about Ancient Greece. I found it interesting to see everyone we learned about: the Muses, Zeus, Hera, Narciuss Heidis, the Gorgon Sisters, and of course, Hercules! I like how he calls Megara "Megan," when she said her 'friends' call her "Meg." This movies pretty good and will be great to watch if you'll ever have a Greek party!
Slow moving.......2007-05-13
This is a good movie, BUT it doesn't have the story line and action to keep a 3-year-old interested. It's very slow moving in parts and has lots of dark scenes with not much color. It also occasional breaks away to parts that have music but very few graphics and that causes a lost interest from the kids.
Disney Goofed!.......2007-01-23
I can't tell the number of hours my daughter and I sat in our big chair with a big bowl of pop-corn watching and rewatching this movie. She always loved it at five and, now at twelve, she still does.
Some people pick this movie apart as if it is supposed to be somehow "accurate" to the mythology. Sheesh! It's a disney film. Just enjoy the beautiful colors, more than tolerable story line, exceptional music and campy laughs. I did rewatching it for the first time on dvd.
One final point: Disney goofed in that they being one of the most left-wing liberal organizations out there mistakenly presented the Gospel to the world in cartoon allegory.
Think about it: The only Son of the Most High becomes human, and dwells among men, "discovers" himself, all the while perfoming a myriad miraculous feats. How does he become a "True Hero"? By sacrificing himself for the one that he loves...His bride.
Alright, it's a bit of a stretch and surely unintentional, but it still works. It's a beautiful thing!
Disney rewrites Greek Mythology.......2006-11-03
What a shock, Disney changed a story when they adapted it to an animated feature. Hercules is representative of the whole Disney canon in this aspect. This has been the norm for Disney going back to Snow White so I think complaints don't hold much water, especially if someone is willing to accept previous changes made in other Disney films.
As for Disney's Hercules, it's a fun film. This was a nice break for Disney as they had been putting out some heavier material for a LONG time. Aladdin was fairly light-hearted but Lion King, Pocahontas, and especially Hunchback of Notre Dame had all been harder edged. Hercules is a comedy and needs to be looked at as such.
The voicework and songs are all pretty good here. I do like the gospel approach on the music and think it works quite well. Menken, as usual, does a fantastic job with the music and Zippel does well with the lyrics. Granted, he's no Howard Ashman but no one is.
I wouldn't call Hercules one of Disney's best, but it is a good, entertaining film that fulfills its mission. Don't expect to get a lesson in Greek mythology. I do agree with others who encourage viewers to read the mythology, but that doesn't invalidate Disney's film. It's clear that they were merely inspired by the story of Hercules and went from there. I think it's a good thing that they don't feel constrained to follow the stories to a tee; a flat adaptation would not be this entertaining.
As for the DVD, it's far from spectacular. The film is not in anamorphic widescreen and the quality of the "Making if" Featurette is horrible. It looks like someone taped it on VHS and then dumped it on to DVD. The film looks good and the sound is good. This is a fairly barebones release and is one of the most poorly treated of all Disney animated films. It seems to be another that Disney has decided to forget or neglect. What a shame.
Disney does its magic!.......2006-09-22
Another Disney classic just like Pocahondas, Shrek, Snow white, Alandin and Lion King. These are cartoon figures and films that are never forgoten.

A wimpy remake of an already anemic movie (the 1947 Rita Hayworth vehicle Down to Earth), this glitzy musical from 1980 improbably stars Olivia Newton-John as a heavenly muse sent here to help open a roller-derby disco. Gene Kelly is mixed up in this well-meaning but goofy effort to fuse nostalgia with late-'70s glitter-ball trendiness, and he looks just plain silly. Directed by Robert Greenwald, the film doesn't even work as decent kitsch. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Excellent Movie.......2007-05-17
I needed this so that I could do a drag song number for a show. The show was cancelled, but I loved the movie.
I'm Alive! (So it gets a 5).......2007-05-16
I have probably seen this movie well over 300 times. It was one of the first video cassettes in my family (back when a VCR was the size of a semi truck) and I have literally watched this movie over and over again.
I still have the sndtrk. on vinyl and I love all of the songs, especially the ones by ELO. I thought Gene Kelly was just magnificent and Olivia has one of the hottest boot collections around as you will see in the end segment. The script is totally cheesy, the effects are laughable and Jeff Beck is awful but this all adds to the charm.
This movie is just mad silly fun and so brilliant in that it captured all that the 80's were about. I love the dance sequences, especially when they are in the new wave clothing store with the lurex spider people. You will see Solid Gold dancers, Olivia in legwarmers, Gene Kelly in a rollerdisco and a glimpse into what record stores were like before they were what the are today.
I really, really love this movie and I am not a male in my 40's with a a lurking crush on Olivia. I'm a female in my 30's who grew up on this film and you need to own this if only to see the 9 muses come alive from the mural in Santa Monica. Or was it Venice Beach?
It isn't as bad as it originally was.......2007-05-11
Upon rewatching the dvd after initially catching this movie on TV many years ago, it's actually not that bad. I do have to say that the male lead is sorta bland (John Travolta he ain't) but Olivia Newton-John was at her best (singing and looks) in this movie.
It's a good movie to watch if you want spend an afternoon on the couch.
Movie from childhood.......2007-05-07
I like this movie for the nostalgia. The music and scenes throughout takes me back to when I first saw it.

Director Martin Scorsese reunites with members of his <I>GoodFellas</I> gang (writer Nicholas Pileggi; actors Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci, and Frank Vincent) for a three-hour epic about the rise and fall of mobster Sam "Ace" Rothstein (De Niro), a character based on real-life gangster Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal. (It's modeled after on <I>Wiseguy</I> and <I>GoodFellas</I> and Pileggi's true crime book Casino: Love and Honor in Las Vegas.) Through Rothstein, the picture tells the story of how the Mafia seized, and finally lost control of, Las Vegas gambling. The first hour plays like a fascinating documentary, intricately detailing the inner workings of Vegas casinos. Sharon Stone is the stand out among the actors; she nabbed an Oscar nomination for her role as the voracious Ginger, the glitzy call girl who becomes Rothstein's wife. The film is not as fast paced or gripping as Scorsese's earlier gangster pictures (Mean Streets and GoodFellas), but it's still absorbing. And, hey--it's Scorsese! --Jim Emerson

PRETTY GOOD MOVIE.......2007-06-13
I ENJOYED THIS FILM. IT WAS ENTERTAINING FROM START TO FINISH. GREAT CAST,GREAT STORY,AND TRULY A CLASSIC.I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS FILM,A MUST SEE!!!
this one is a sure bet.......2007-05-12
this is the movie martin scorsese SHOULDA won his oscar for. instead it was deemed upon its release an inferior copycat of "goodfellas", what with the same director, writer, and stars, and a similar set of circumstances. this though is a quite different movie, and (imho) a superior one. while "goodfellas" is set among a highly parochial little group, the gangsters are only a part of the scene in "casino": its much more widespread a saga of greed and the corruption of stupidity. whereas joe pesci is a cartoon in the earlier film, here he is a fully fleshed out character. de niro (more a glorified supporting character in "goodfellas") offers an insightful reading of an ordinary man with one phenomenal talent (the ability to set the correct odds) who parlays it into a position of power for which he knows he is unqualified, yet enjoys the ride. and sharon stone gives the performance of her career as de niros unfaithful drug-addicted wife. excellent supporting work also from james woods, don rickles, and a host of unknowns cast as aged mob bosses, &c. not to mention a great job of art & costume direction, brilliant soundtrack, the amazing opening titles sequence, and so on. it might not be scorses most underrated movie (thats still the hated but brilliant "king of comedy") -- but it might well be his very best.
LOVE IT!.......2007-04-11
i looooooove this movie. Bob DeNiro is SO good in it. and Joe Pesci too. and of course especially Sharon Stone. wow, didn't realize she could act until i saw this. amazing acting. even down to the extras its good acting. it feels so real. and this movie has my all time fave scene; when Sam sees Ginger for the first time, and Mickey and Sylvia's "Love is strange" song comes on, and Gin makes a scene, throwing chips, and Sam, who can obviously stop and throw her out doesn't, but just stares mesmerized at her. and she know she's got him. she leaves looking at him and laughing. that scene is SO SEXY. this movie also has some good, old time songs. Scorcese really took his time to make this. but major WARNING: seriously, it's NOT FOR KIDS. even i can't watch manyo its scenes they are so realistic and gruesome. that's the only thing that i don't like about it, that it's violence makes it unwatchable some times. but isn't that still good b/c it shows what great acting it is?! if u don't watch this u haven't watched a real movie. one of the bset movies ever made!
Gambling in the desert.......2007-04-02
Great performances by all-star cast. Martin Scorsese shows why he's the best action director in the business. Diniro, Sharon Stone and James Woods are the imperfect love triangle. And Pesci is Pesci. Must see mob movie.
an awful and exagerrated pastiche from Scorsese's better films.......2007-03-15
I was shocked at the crudeness of this film: it is like Scorsese took the best moments from a number of his films and strung them together to make a thriller about some horrible thugs: a guy gets his head put into a vice for cheating, Sharon Stone is too beautiful to fit in, Pesci gets it in a car, etc. It just didn't hang together, the story felt flat, and there was little smoothness to the narrative flow. This is Scorsese's worst by far.

Robert Redford and Barbra Streisand star as sociopolitical opposites--he's a WASP novelist, she's an activist--who nevertheless strike up a romance in the 1930s, and have a rocky relationship through the next two decades that reflects much of America's history. An essential part of the movie--the Hollywood blacklist and the McCarthy witch- hunt years--comes across as a botch, due to some excessive cutting before the film was released. But except for that hole in the heart of the story, director Sydney Pollack (Out of Africa) has crafted a strong and moving drama about two interesting characters. Redford (always good with Pollack) is at the height of his powers, and Streisand is persuasive. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
A classic love story that was well worth the wait.......2007-06-11
The Way We Were is one of those classic love stories that I always knew I should see, but just never got around to it. Barbra Streisand and Robert Redford shine as a couple of polar opposites who are doing their best to make things work despite their differing political and economic views. Through it all, and despite their differences, their love for each other keeps them together year after year while they try to make their relationship work. The love story is beautiful, well told, and difficult not to enjoy. I'd definitely recommend this to anyone who loves love stories.
robert redford fan.......2007-03-18
a classic romantic movie, its so great to see the older movies restored on DVDs. robert redford is so handsome and as for the song, well, after i saw the movie, "the way we were" became so meaningful and beautiful to me.
Touching romance.......2007-02-16
Great love story. Everytime I watch this movie, I cry. Robert Redford couldn't have been more handsome than he was in this movie. And Barbra Streisand is always great in whatever she does. Strictly a chick flick for a rainy afternoon or a cold evening at home alone.
This is a true vision of history.......2007-02-02
It's about time someone stands up and says : "red scare is all about mean politicans and innocents writers", "soviet spies never existed". That movie is telling us just that, by completely ignoring the spionage problem and the Corea war. One thing is particularly shocking, let's think of the millions of the victims of the Gulag when we see Stalin's poster in Streisand's room. "Freedom of speech will never exist in this country", says Redford-Pollack ; i just wish you were born in USSR, you criminal.
Great Service.......2007-01-10
Arrived really quickly and I gave it away as a gift; I've heard no complaints so it must be in excellent condition.

The audacious concert film <I>Eddie Murphy Raw</I> rubbed some people the wrong way upon its release in 1987, but there's no denying that between Murphy's more insensitive bits about women and gay men is some of his most inspired material. While the young comedian indulges an unattractive homophobia and rants about the sexual manipulativeness of all females, he makes up for it with an amazing story about being chided by Bill Cosby for obscene humor and does a great impression of Mr. T falling under the spell of a Jedi mind trick. The best stuff comes deep into the show, particularly a long tale of being pressured into a fight at a club, resulting in a phone call to Murphy's drunk father, the latter in the middle of a verbal attack on his wife. The scene is genuinely horrifying and funny, testament to Murphy's early reputation as heir to Richard Pryor's mercilessly autobiographical brilliance. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Description
The record-setting number one concert film, EDDIE MURPHY: RAW shows Eddie Murphy doing what he does best: making people laugh. Filmed live at New York's Felt Forum, Murphy delights, shocks, and entertains with celebrity impersonations, observations on 'love, sex and marriage in the 80's, a remembrance of Mom's hamburgers and much more.

ANOTHER GREAT SET FROM MURPHY IN HIS PRIME!.......2007-06-24
It may not be as great as Delirious, but that is a matter of opinion. It might make a difference which one you see first. It is still a classic comedy stand-up!
DO NOT BUY THIS VIDEO.......2007-06-20
FOUND THIS VIDEO OF EDDIE MURPHYS RAW A REAL DISAPPOINTMENT. FIRST HOUR HE CONCENTRATES ON THREE DIFFERENT SKITS AND MANAGES TO STRETCH IT OUT. LAST 30 MINUTES THERE IS MORE VARIETY BUT AT THAT POINT IT DOESNT MAKE UP FOR THE LOST FIRST HOUR. SAVE YOUR MONEY, GET DELIRIOUS IT IS FUNNIER AND HAS MORE VARIETY IN SKITS AND WORTH THE MONEY. I AM GLAD THAT I GOT THE RAW VIDEO USED SO I DIDNT LOSE TO MUCH MONEY.
I loved it.......2007-06-10
I've seen his before and it was still just as funny. If you are an Edie Murphy fan this is a must!!!

Pretty Good.......2007-05-14
Not quite as funny as Eddie Murphy - Delirious, but makes it worth it with a few routines, especially with the opening bits about reaction to that previous effort. There's an odd opening of a childhood scene and a closing where, I think, he's trying to live up to his father's rant in the first, but most of this stuff- the Rocky bit, the Caribbean bit (even pictured on the case, so I know I'm not alone)- is gold.

This movie has a checkered history, having been chopped from its original 227-minute director's cut to 139 minutes for its U.S. release. This longer edition benefits from having the complete story (the short version has huge gaps) about turn-of-the-century Jewish immigrants in America finding their way into lives of crime, as told in flashback by an aging Jewish gangster named Noodles (Robert De Niro). On the other hand, it's almost four hours long, and this sometimes-indulgent Sergio Leone film is no <I>Godfather</I>. Still, it is notable for the contrast between Leone's elegiac take on the gangster film and his occasional explosive action, as well as for the mix of the stoic, inexpressive De Niro and the hyperactive James Woods as his lifelong friend and rival. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>
Customer Reviews:
Haunting and Brilliant. .......2007-06-19
This is an unbelievably beautiful story which is multi-layered and textured to a great extent. Yes, it certainly is a gangster movie and it also is a love story; although, one about as politically incorrect as they come. Both aspects of the film are conceptually executed well. I can't say the same thing about many of its technical aspects, however. At 3:45, this movie is far too long and moves too slow. It could easily have been just as good if an hour had been cut out of it. Furthermore, Sergio Leone is no Martin Scorsese. There's an element of amateurism inherent to the production as the reunion of Elizabeth McGovern and DeNiro is rendered ridiculous as he was an old man despite her not aging a day after 35 years.
Once Upon a Time in America is a very unique film as unlike a Goodfellas or Casino it is rich in sentimentality and the effect is mesmerizing but also very depressing. Ennio Morricone's musical score adds to the film's melancholic feel. It's not the type of thing you can see more than a couple of times but there's no denying that it's excellent.
LONG AND DRAWN OUT.......2007-06-13
WITH AN ALLSTAR CAST YOU WOULD THINK IT WOULD BE SUPER. BUT IT'S NOTHING MORE THAN A SLEEPER. THIS MOVIE WAS TERRIBLE! I FELT TORTURED SITTING THROUGH THIS BOMB! DON'T WASTE YOUR TIME WITH THIS ONE.
I still say its the best .......2007-05-21
I'll see your "Godfather" your "Godfellas" your "Departed" and your "Scarface" and still beat you every time with "Once Upon a Time in America".
Now outright violence in these types of movies has its place and so does subtly of plot but I think it is only "Once Upon a Time in America" that manages to walk the line between both aspects. It also has something that many other movies, not just mobster movies forget, great charecter development. It has a great cast and a great story to go with it although it can throw people off with the quick pace with which it changes points of view.
If you can't get everything on the first try don't worry watch it a 2nd or 3rd time if you have to that is why god made good movies.
When you finally get it you will be amazed how attached and interested you get in the affairs of David 'Noodles' Aaronson and his friends.
Give it a shot if you like a good movie
Great movie..........2007-05-20
One of the best mob movies ever.. I wish they released this dvd with more features and deleted scenes which would have given us more about the story...Great film.
not a gangster film, but a love story .......2007-05-13
Robert De Niro and James Woods star in this Sergio Leone flick as two Jewish gangsters, "Noodles" and Max, who share a forbidden love for each other that the hyper-macho world they inhabit both creates and scorns. Unable to admit their love, they pursue a series of troubling, violent love affairs (especially Noodles - whose idea of intimacy is rape) with a number of women, whom unfailingly either conform to the stereotypes of the virgin or, more commonly, the whore (the women in this film, oddly enough, are either able to enjoy or forget the times that Noodles rapes them.) By the end of this nearly four hour exploration of unrequited love, Noodles has come to love Max so much that he's unable to take rightful revenge for all the heartbreak and hardship he's caused him. Kudos to Leone, well-known for his tough guy anti-hero films, for having the courage to explore such a taboo subject.

The opening and closing moments of Robert (<I>Forrest Gump</I>) Zemeckis's <I>Contact</I> astonish viewers with the sort of breathtaking conceptual imagery one hardly ever sees in movies these day--each is an expression of the heroine's lifelong quest (both spiritual and scientific) to explore the meaning of human existence through contact with extraterrestrial life. The movie begins by soaring far out into space, then returns dizzyingly to earth until all the stars in the heavens condense into the sparkle in one little girl's eye. It ends with that same girl as an adult (Jodie Foster)--her search having taken her to places beyond her imagination--turning her gaze inward and seeing the universe in a handful of sand. <I>Contact</I> traces the journey between those two visual epiphanies. Based on Carl Sagan's novel, <I>Contact</I> is exceptionally thoughtful and provocative for a big-budget Hollywood science fiction picture, with elements that recall everything from <I>2001</I> to <I>The Right Stuff</I>. Foster's solid performance (and some really incredible alien hardware) keep viewers interested, even when the story skips and meanders, or when the halo around the golden locks of rising-star-of-a-different-kind Matthew McConaughey (as the pure-Hollywood-hokum love interest) reaches Milky Way-level wattage. Ambitious, ambiguous, pretentious, unpredictable--<I>Contact</I> is all of these things and more. Much of it remains open to speculation and interpretation, but whatever conclusions one eventually draws, <I>Contact</I> deserves recognition as a rare piece of big-budget studio filmmaking on a personal scale. <I>--Jim Emerson</I>

Right Down My Alley!.......2007-06-21
The type of movie I love. It is scifi, rich in mystery! The beginning is very slow. When I watch it now I skip right to the beginning of the action. From there the movie flys. You are truly kept looking for the next clue, the next answer. You want to find out what this is all about. They could have done something different with the conclusion, but I liked the change in the main characters outlook.
This movie is assigned watching for college Ethics class........2007-06-04
This movie is rich in ethical points of view. It ranges from the insane who believe their harmful actions are saving humanity, to non-ethical behaviour by saying what ever it takes to succeed. the moral of the movie is amazingly simple yet illusive to even the wisest of Philosophers.
The special effects are fantastic, the casting is brilliant and the writing is incredibly profound. A definite 5 star movie.
terrible.......2007-05-15
it was long, unengaging and frankly, the end was not creative in the slightest. Don't know what else to tell you.
Great "What could be" Movie.......2007-05-12
Somewhat believable tale about potential life in the universe. Inspiring and fun to watch.
Contact.......2007-05-12
Contact is a movie about Astronomy and the search for signals in space from remote, intelligent life. Jodie Foster plays a gifted astronomer who struggles to keep her work and reputation alive in a very controversial field that very few people--including most other scientists--do not take seriously. Even a non-scientific audience cannot help becoming totally engulged in this story. The acting and direction are outstanding, and the special effects are stunning. The viewer is swept into a whirlwind of excitement and suspense as a world that does not yet exist for us becomes not only alive, but compellingly believable.

Here's another example of TV giving James Woods the chance to stretch out from the intense-psycho roles he seems restricted to in too many of his movies. In <I>My Name Is Bill W.</I> he plays Bill Wilson, the overreaching businessman from the Roaring '20s who went on to found Alcoholics Anonymous. Woods gets plenty of chances to stretch out here in Bill's headlong slide to the bottom, through the terrors of the Wall Street crash (which amplifies a two-fisted drinking problem) and into the loss of everything he holds dear. Yet Woods also is convincing as the man who understands just how insidious his disease is and learns to try to take everything one day at a time. He receives strong support from James Garner as the alcoholic physician who teams with Bill to make AA a viable proposition. <I>--Marshall Fine</I>
Description

In this inspiring portrayal, My Name is Bill W. movingly depicts the trials, trauma and triumph of people and loved ones coping and recovering from substance abuse. Director: Daniel Petrie. Bill W. Rocks.......2007-05-13
This movie stands the test of time. Teaches us to remain humble and giving.
Hallmark Hall of Fame Strikes Again?.......2007-05-13
I wonder if this film is a *slightly* maudlin, syrupy, and overly-romanticized version of the strictly biographical history that so many millions of us have come to treasure in our twelve-step societies, AA being the first; notwithstanding, this film puts life, sound, flesh and bone, with appropos faces, to figures many only know from the black and white pages of AA literature. One can't be too critical of such larger-than-life portrayals of our founders and friends...
A Movie That Could Save Your Life!.......2007-05-12
This movie is a must see for anyone who is in reovery or anyone thinking about recovery. As a sober alcoholic for over 15 years, I am sure I would not be here if AA wasn't started by one drunk helping another drunk and this movie captures how it really happened. I have read much on the history of AA and "My Name is Bill W." truely honors and closely follows how it all came about. James Woods really captures the despair and hopelessness of the alcoholic who can't stop drinking and the how he found the solution to having a happy and productive life through just putting a plug in the jug and taking the simple 12 steps that he, Dr. Bob, brilliantly played by James Garner and God, played by God, ultimately put on paper in the book "Alcohoics Anonymous" better known as the Big Book and then into action. See this movie and give it to anyone you know who is afflicted with alcoholism. It may save their life!
One Day At A Time.....................2007-05-07
The great thing about this movie is, there is NO ending!! It keeps playing in the life's of recovering Alcoholics around the world!! The fact that both actor's are part of Alcoholic Anonymous, makes it a very moving example of what this AA program can do for the Alcoholic, and their famlies. Truly a movie to see!!!
Make a Pot of Coffee And Watch With Friends!.......2007-04-13
Did not know what to expect and was pleasantly surprised. Bought another copy to give as a gift. These guys were perfect and somebody did some research along the line. Was like Deja-Vu. I am thankful that I can add this DVD to my collection. Make a pot of coffee and watch this with friends.

Customer Reviews:
Great but flawed.......2007-06-20
If Scorcese hadn't already done 'Goodfellas' this would probably be a 5 star film, but Goodfellas came first and this second. Still its a dam good movie but flawed. At 178 minutes its way too long and whilst I like the over-dubbed narration that Scorcese uses in some films, there's too much in this one, especially at the start.
OK enough gripes, Joe Pesci is terrifying again, DeNiro is excellent and best of all Sharon Stone gives a fabulous performance and was deservedly nominated for best actress in the 1996 Academy awards. Naturally this being a Scorcese picture there are some classic moments, and some of them are extremely unpleasant.
If you haven't seen Goodfellas you'll probably love this. If you have then you'll see that it is the work of a master filmmaker, but its not quite up to the same standard as his earlier masterpiece.
excellent movie, and quality.......2007-05-12
I was very pleased with the quality and price of the DVD. I will remain doing business with Amazon. I like the variety of products.
casino.......2007-05-07
this is the 3rd time i had to replace this dvd....all my kids cheap friends keep "borrowing" it without asking me and never return it. help blockbuster....can change late fees on their credit cards?
Casino - the movie.......2007-03-29
Casino is a great movie. It is one movie that you will wish to watch over and over. Robert DiNero is perfect in his role as Nick Weinstein - he is tough and sometimes also tender. Sharon Stone plays the perfect slut-wife. Joe Pescci is a pathetic scoundrel, completely devoid of conscience and character (you don't want to meet him in an alley, or anywhere, for that matter). This movie is all-in-all among the greatest gangster movies ever made.
