Eddy is the sharpest player on the circuit but the game is a set-up, and Eddy leaves owing the underworld boss Hatchet Harry (P.H. Moriarty) half a million. Harry gives Eddy a week to come up with the money before he starts taking fingers as collateral. Eddy s dad, JD (Sting) can cancel the debt by handing over his bar, lock, stock and barrel to his old adversary, Harry. JD refuses to give in, feeling his street-tough son can get himself out of his own messes. So, while Harry sends a couple of petty crooks to steal a pair of antique shotguns to add to his collection, Eddy and his mates plan a caper that will enable them to pay off Harry and make out like bandits! In a comedy of errors, and a helter-skelter ride through London s gangland, the guns, cash, drugs and identities become all mixed up as a full complement of London s lowlife get involved in a melee which even all their menace can t handle. Cockney boys Tom, Soap, Eddie, and Bacon are in a bind; they owe seedy criminal and porn king "Hatchet" Harry a sizable amount of cash after Eddie loses half a million in a rigged game of poker. Hot on their tails is a thug named Big Chris who intends to send them all to the hospital if they don't come up with the cash in the allotted time. Add into the mix an incompetent set of ganja cultivators, two dimwitted robbers, a "madman" with an afro, and a ruthless band of drug dealers and you have an astonishing movie called <I>Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels</I>. Before the boys can blink, they are caught up in a labyrinth of double-crosses that lead to a multitude of dead bodies, copious amounts of drugs, and two antique rifles.
Written and directed by talented newcomer Guy Ritchie, this is one of those movies that was destined to become an instant cult classic à la <I>Reservoir Dogs</I>. Although some comparisons were drawn between Ritchie and Quentin Tarantino, it would be unfair to discount the brilliant wit of the story and the innovative camerawork that the director brings to his debut feature. Not since <I>The Krays</I> has there been such an accurate depiction of the East End and its more colorful characters. Indicative of the social stratosphere in London, Ritchie's movie is a hilarious and at times touching account of friendships and loyalty. The director and his mates (who make up most of the cast) clearly are enjoying themselves here. This comes across in some shining performances, in particular from ex-footballer Vinnie Jones (Big Chris) and an over-the-top Vas Blackwood (as Rory Breaker), who very nearly steals the show. Full of quirky vernacular and clever tension-packed action sequences, <I>Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels</I> is a triumph--a perfect blend of intelligence, humor, and suspense. <I>--Jeremy Storey</I>
Customer Reviews:
Madcap British crime caper.......2007-04-16
Director Guy Ritchie expertly concocted an amusing crime thriller replete with crosses and double crosses among various criminal groups in London's underworld. The plot surrounds a group of 4 low level criminals played by Jason Statham, Nick Moran, Jason Flemyng and Dexter Fletcher who pool their resources to sit in at a high stakes card game with a 100,000 pound admission. Nick Moran playing Eddie is a card shark but the game run by porn king Harry "Hatchet" Lonsdale played by P.J. Moriarty is fixed. He loses the 100,000 and an aditional 500,000 which must be paid within a week or else.
The band of 4 friends contrive to recoup the stolen funds by ripping off a marijuana growing cartel that conveniently live next door. That group had already been targeted by other group of robbers and things as a result get predictably muddled.
Meanwhile The "Hatchet" has commissioned the theft of a pair of antique shotguns worth a small fortune that bizarrely wind up in the hands of Moran and his friends. The various groups begin exchanging both the money and the shotguns among them leaving behind a trail of bloodied corpses in this farcical romp.
Ritchie concludes this well contrived comedic thriller, which includes a plethora of tough looking British thugs, with a touch of irony that effectively caps this winning film.
The only film that makes me proud to say I'm British.......2007-04-01
This is the best british comedy EVER....well in my opinion ;-)
It has a pulp fiction vibe, following a group of wheelers and dealers (hustlers) who get into a sticky situation with an East End gangster.
Original plot, clever dialogue and great cinematography. I'm sure Americans will struggle with the dialogue but give it a try!
Celluloid Fiction.......2007-02-08
A friend of mine suggested that I watch 1998's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels..."It's the British version of Pulp Fiction," he proclaimed.
There is the similarity that characters unaware of each other's presence are ultimately all connected by the closing credits in both Pulp Fiction (1994) and Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels. There is a lot of shooting. But otherwise, there were not a lot of plot similarities. And Pulp Fiction is much more of a violence R-rated film than the mainly language R-rating slapped on Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
So, I'm glad that my friend recommended Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels to me, but I'd mostly disagree about his summation of the film. This movie absolutely stands on it's own as a good, suspenseful action flick with some terrific twists. It's funny when it wants to be. It's serious. It's thrilling...a thoroughly enjoyable movie from the late 90s.
I don't know why I'd never taken the time before yesterday to watch Director Guy Ritchie's story of 4 guys that get themselves in deep with a local kingpin. But I can tell you that Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels was sure good enough to have me add Ritchie's 2000 follow-on Snatch (aka Lock, Stock and Six Stolen Diamonds) to my Ready-to-View queue; I understand that several of the actors are back, but all playing unrelated characters along side Brad Pitt. But that's another review entirely.
Check out Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels.
"A minute ago this was the safest job in the world. Now it's turning into a bad day in Bosnia.".......2007-01-11
I've owned Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998) on DVD for a few years now and I've watched it about three or four times so far mainly due to the fact it's extremely entertaining and engaging, but also because it's one of those films that actually gets a little better each time it's viewed, in my opinion. Written and directed by Guy Ritchie (Snatch, Swept Away), the film features Jason Flemyng (The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen), Dexter Fletcher (Tristan + Isolde), Nick Moran (The Rules of Engagement), and Jason Statham (Snatch, The Transporter, Crank), in his first, feature film. Also appearing is P.H. Moriarty (Jaws 3-D), Vinnie Jones (Snatch), Lenny McLean (The Fifth Element), Frank Harper (Bend It Like Beckham), Steven Mackintosh (Underworld: Evolution), Nicholas Rowe (Young Sherlock Holmes), Stephen Marcus (Quills), Vas Blackwood (Mean Machine), and Sting (Dune) aka Gordon Sumner, former frontman of the band The Police.
The story, set in London's seedy East End, involves four friends named Eddie (Moran), Bacon (Statham), Tom (Flemyng), and Soap (Fletcher) who find themselves in deep with a local criminal boss after Eddie loses big during a poker game. Here's the deal...a scary fellow named 'Hatchet' Harry Lonsdale (Moriarty), who operates an adult novelty shop as a front, has a running card game, one in which the buy in is 100 thousand pounds. Seems Eddie's specialty is not so much in cards, but the ability to read his opponents, so Eddie and his friends come up with the dough in the hopes of turning around a quick profit. Thing is, Harry cheats, so subsequently Eddie loses, and loses big, to the point where he's a half million in the hole to Harry. Harry knows Eddie's buy in money came from a collective pool, so he now holds them all responsible for the debt, and has given them approximately a week to pony up, or else he'll have his collector, a seriously scary individual named Big Chris (Jones), come around to start removing body parts. The situation seems bleak but hope does arrive in the form of a plan, one in which involves Eddie and his friends putting it to Eddie's neighbor, a man named Dog (Harper), who, along with his crew, are planning to rip off a group of local weed dealers. As the various plans come together (along with various comical complications tied to each), Eddie and crew successfully heist Dog's score, but even more complications arise as various players get involved, resulting in an extraordinary amount twists and turns, so much so you just may need a scorecard to keep track of all the action...
One should know I barely scratched the surface of the story above, as there's a great many interesting characters running about this film, along with a large number of varied plot elements which don't seem all that related at first, but eventually do tie together well as the film careens towards its conclusion. The story is very complicated, but I think Ritchie does an excellent job in keeping things orderly and moving along at a solid pace. Ritchie uses a decent amount of techniques to forward the story, including voice overs, slow motion, still frames, flashbacks, odd shooting angles, etc., all of which are utilized in such a way to enhance the story. All the performances are solid, bolstered by a lot of great dialog awash with cockney slang. At first some of the language may seem odd, but after awhile the viewer doesn't notice it as much as they're engrossed in the activity on the screen and certain things not understood through dialog alone become apparent from the inflection of speech and the action of the characters. The first quarter or so of the film sets up most of the characters, while the second quarter presents the dilemma, and then the rest involves Eddie and friends trying to extricate themselves from a very deep hole. As I mentioned earlier, there's a large number of characters introduced throughout, but know each has a specific role in the overall scheme of things, and is presented with the appropriate amount of screen time in terms of their importance to the story. Given this was Ritchie's first film, I was amazed at how well he managed to present as much as he did with the ease in which he did it, as everything clicked her for me. I should also mention the eclectic choice of tunes used throughout worked very well, as there's songs by The Stooges, James Brown, Dusty Springfield, Robbie Williams, The Stone Roses, among others. My favorite character in the film was Big Chris, a no nonsense enforcer/collector played by Vinnie Jones (he was `Big' Chris, as his young son, who could often be found at his side, was `Little' Chris). There's a great scene near the end where Big Chris deals with a threat to his son by utilizing a car door on the head on the one who made the threat. There is a copious amount of violence throughout this comical crime caper, but most of it, in terms of the actual visceral displays, isn't shown. An example of this is you'll see someone shooting a gun at someone else, but you don't necessarily see the person being shot at during impact. The trick here is what you don't see you fill in with your mind, given the detailed events just prior, so there's a perception of violence, rather than the actual depiction, which can be just as effective. All in all this is a highly entertaining film, capped off by a great ending. If you've seen this film and are interested in others like it, I'd highly recommend Ritchie's next film entitled Snatch (2000), as they're very similar, the main difference being the latter has a larger budget and features a slew of recognizable faces such as Brad Pitt (Mr. & Mrs. Smith), Dennis Farina ("Law & Order"), and Benicio Del Toro (Traffic), along with a number of performers from this film.
The DVD I own is the initial release, and not the `Lock N' Loaded' director's cut which was released later. In terms of the version I own, the picture, available in both widescreen anamorphic (1.85:1) and fullscreen format (1.33:1), looks clean, and the Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround audio comes across very well. In terms of extras there are production notes, cast and crew biographies, a production featurette, trailers for both the U.S. and U.K. release, an informative cockney rhyming slang dictionary, and subtitles in English, French, and Spanish.

A great movie and start of a great career.......2006-12-26
This is Guy Ritchie's first movie. Very few screenwriters and directors can say they their first endeavor was so successful. This is an amazing story that is clever, funny, and unpredictable. I wish I could write movies like this! A must see for any serious film fan.

One of the most invigorating period adventures to hit the big screen in decades, this lavish, brilliantly directed film drew critical and audience raves when it was released in 1995. Inspired by historical fact and larger-than-life legend, the intelligently scripted story takes place in Scotland in 1713, when Highland farmer and clan leader Rob Roy MacGregor (Liam Neeson) is forced to borrow money from the duplicitous aristocrat Marquis of Montrose (John Hurt) to help his clan survive a harsh winter. When Montrose's vile henchman (Tim Roth) schemes to dishonor MacGregor and his wife (Jessica Lange) and take the money for himself, the rugged Highlander must take courageous action to preserve his integrity. What follows--along with some of the finest sword-fighting ever filmed--is a tale of courage and valor destined to become an enduring movie classic. Tim Roth received a well-deserved Oscar nomination (for Best Supporting Actor) for his indelible performance as the foppish but deadly villain Cunningham, and both Neeson and Lange bring an earthy, sensual quality to their passionate roles. Boasting a wealth of breathtaking scenery and high-intensity action, <I>Rob Roy</I> is further blessed by a splendid supporting cast (including Brian Cox and Eric Stoltz), and the lush soundtrack by Carter Burwell strikes a perfect balance of romanticism and vigorous dramatic energy. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Customer Reviews:
Worth watching again and again.......2007-04-13
Were there ever two finer men to grace the screen than Eric Stoltz and Liam Neeson? My eyes were constantly doing battle over which beauty to feast upon! Ah, but I digress!
I liked this film SO MUCH BETTER than Braveheart (which, frankly, bored me to tears!). Magnificent pagan pageantry, music and dancing frame the story of love, loyalty, honor, bravery, integrity, family, betrayal and trust so clear, so artfully created, and with such breathtaking beauty!
Not to be given short shrift is the story of women as property, chattel to be violated at will in battle, those who pay the price for the decisions of their men. Rape as a weapon of politics and property (honor violated) is a crushing testament to women's place in herstory.
"Honor is what no man can give you, and none can take away," says Rob Roy, "Woman is the heart of honor."
Rob Roy is nothing if not a man of honor. He will not swear false witness even against a man he has no respect for, he will not lie, cheat or steal and chooses only men of honor to surround him. When his best friend disappears with money borrowed as an investment, he refuses to believe he has been duped. There is nothing but honor around Rob Roy MacGregor.
This becomes crucial when Rob Roy speaks the truth of his rage to those in power. To accuse him of lying would be ludicrous, as everyone knows Rob Roy MacGregor doesn't lie. It is the best defense anyone has against being disbelieved.
A beautiful movie. Powerful themes. Worth watching again and again.
Dejas huella.
Ridicuouls.......2006-11-22
The film was fencing about all right, until the last sword scene. To pretend that someone can halt an expert swordsman at bay by grabbing the blade of his sword with, of all things, his bare hand, so that the attacker can neither plunge it past his grip or pull it out, is just outrageously silly. That this simple point should have eluded most of the reviewers on this site is, to say the least, almost as amazing. It is so silly it just metastisises over any enjoyment one might have had of the whole. Incredible that any one seeing this Munchausen fib when it was shown at the theatre, wouldn't have risen for his seat whith a loud "Oh, please, come on!!"
excellent movie.......2006-11-10
Just made an extended visit to Scotland last summer and it made the movie all the more interesting because I had actually trod on some of the soil where Rob Roy's adventures took place. Good entertainment for history buffs.
A Highland Legend brilliantly portrayed!.......2006-09-30
Here we have one of those films that is as enjoyable in the tenth or so viewing as the first! The landscape of Scotland is generously displayed throughout. Liam Neeson plays the part of Rob Roy MacGregor, the legendary outlaw of the Highlands, as only he can. I doubt there was anyone else who could have played the part so naturally. In this story, Rob Roy finds himself forced to fight a guerrilla war against Marquis Montrose, a string of events resulting from the criminal acts of the Marquis' vile employee, Archibald Cunningham. Cunningham robbed the clan of a monetary loan, murdered Rob's best friend, and raped Rob's wife. However, Rob Roy, a true Highlander and man of honor, settles this issue by the sword, putting an end to Cunningham! The duel is one high point of the film, another memorable scene is a meeting between rival aristocrats Marquis Argyle and Marquis Montrose, in which Cunningham is introduced. I won't give away the dialogue!

Product Description
Heavy on atmosphere and light on everything else, From Hell is visually impressive while lacking the depth of the acclaimed graphic novel it's based upon. Making their third feature since 1993's Menace II Society, twins Allen and Albert Hughes approach the Jack the Ripper case with physical precision, re-creating the gritty Whitechapel district of 1888 London in meticulous detail. What they've forgotten is the sheer terror that gripped Whitechapel in the wake of the Ripper's slaying of five prostitutes, investigated here by a Scotland Yard sleuth (Johnny Depp) who uses opium, laudanum, and absinthe to fuel his semiprescient visions of the slayings. Heather Graham attempts a slippery Cockney accent as a would-be victim, while Ian Holm steals the show as a has-been surgeon with devilish delusions of grandeur. Violence is obliquely suggested or briefly graphic, but no matter how you cut it, From Hell is only marginally thrilling as it treads familiar territory. --Jeff Shannon

Heather Graham attempts a slippery Cockney accent as a would-be victim, while Ian Holm steals the show as a has-been surgeon with devilish delusions of grandeur. Violence is obliquely suggested or briefly graphic, but no matter how you cut it, <I>From Hell</I> is only marginally thrilling as it treads familiar territory. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Customer Reviews:
A well-made Ripper movie with twists!.......2007-04-28
The Jack the Ripper murders in nineteenth century London has remained an intriguing unsolved mystery with many plausible theories behind the identity of the Ripper. Based on this background, From Hell posits the theory that the Ripper was actually a member of the British Royal Family, Prince Victor Albert who married & sired a child with a commoner, worse still a prostitute, and the movie revolves around the cover-up by members of the British upper class. Johnny Depp plays the role of the investigating officer who falls for a prostitute, Mary Kelly, played by the beautiful Heather Graham. There is more to the story than just that of course, and the plot is well driven, there is never a dull moment. What makes the movie truly gripping besides the credible performances by the leads is the realistic portrayal of London's Whitechapel district...one gets the sense that it is not a movie one's watching but the district as it truly was with all its poverty, squalor, disease and debauchery. The atmosphere is filled with menace and a sense of evil and this thriller makes for riveting viewing!
Interesting take on an infamous case.......2007-03-22
Based on the premise that the infamous Jack the Ripper case may have involved a member of the British Royal family, namely Prince Albert Victor and hints at possible connections to the notorious Cleveland Street scandal of 1889.
The film explores an alleged plot by Freemasons and high-placed persons in the British government to keep that knowledge away from the general public.
Visually stunning with accurate costumes and sets.
Entertaining but not historically accurate.......2007-02-22
For general entertainment purposes this movie is very good. However the audience must be cautioned that this movie is not historically accurate by any means. Abberline wasn't an opium addict, nor did he die at the end of the case (he live well into the 1920's). The murdered prostitutes never knew eachother, and the royal conspiracy theory is laughable at best. For a good weekend entertainment movie this film will certainly fulfill that need. This is not for the individual looking to learn more about the case.
From Hell (Two-Disc Special Edition).......2007-02-13
I have both the single disc widescreen edition and this issue. The extra bonus material is well worth having. Check out some of the Amazon sellers for GREAT prices if you already own the single disc version.
I especially enjoyed seeing how accurate the scenes were from line drawings from police reports or newspapers of the time and from crude photographs depicting the murder sites. The brothers Hughes did an EXCELLENT job recreating late 19th century London's White Chapel district.
I'm happy with this buy. The movie disc is exactly the one in the single disc version with the same bonuses which actually are pretty decent. The 2nd Disc is loaded with lots of interesting info on making the movie, "Ripper-ology", possible suspects, etc.

Graphic , well paced , dramatization of the Jack The Ripper story.......2006-09-09
The Hughes Brothers created a nightmarish vision of Victorian London only matched by some of Dickens novels. Johnny Depp and Heather Graham are fabulous as the police inspector investigating the case and a prostitute who is a friend to the victims.
The film is beautifully shot and the atmosphere of the grimy southside of London is captured incredibly well. The murder scenes are very graphic and this is definitely not for the squeemish or the very young. Depp plays a role similar to the one he played in Sleepy Hollow but this is a much more serious movie aimed at a different audience. My kids loved Sleepy Hollow but I wouldn't let them watch this. It would give them nightmares for a week.
The plot is interesting and while fictional it has enough plausibilty to engage the viewer for it's entire length.
Johnny Depp is an incredible talent. After seeing him in this,Pirates, Slepy Hollow and Edward Scissorhands I have to conclude that this guy is the best actor of his generation. He is always interesting to watch.

Usually it might seem a tad unfair to begin a review by referring to the director's missis. But then the missis in question wouldn't usually be Madonna--a woman whose ability to reinvent herself several times before breakfast seems in marked contrast to that of hubby Guy Ritchie. Certainly, this follow-up to the filmmaker's breakthrough film--the high-energy, expletive-strewn cockney-gangster movie <I>Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels</I>--hardly breaks new ground being, well, <I>another</I> high-energy, expletive-strewn cockney-gangster movie. OK, so there are some differences. This time around our low-rent hoodlums are battling over dodgy fights and stolen diamonds rather than dodgy card games and stolen drugs. There has been some minor reshuffling of the cast too, with Sting and Dexter Fletcher making way for the more bankable Benicio Del Toro and Brad Pitt, the latter pretty much stealing the whole shebang as an incomprehensible Irish gypsy. And, sure, people who really, really liked <I>Lock, Stock</I>--or have the memory of a goldfish--will really, really like this. The suspicion lingers, however, that if the director doesn't do something very different next time around then his career may prove to be considerably shorter than that of his missis. <I>--Clark Collis</I>

Guy Ritche slid this one out a few years ago, and I missed it. A good cast including Jason Statham plays Turkish (the transporter, Crank) and Brad Pitt as mickey, the bare knuckle gypsy boxer. Essentially an Action Comedy. Turkish, a unlicenced boxing promoter, narrates the story as it revolves around and 84 carrot Diamond, and what eventually turns out to be a stuggle to try and save his own hide from Brick top, the underground promoter that "tells you what will happen". Its intriguing how thing and paths finally entertwine. Must see. If you like Lock, stock and two smoking barrels, this one I believe is better. And if You like Jason Statham, this movie is good as well. A good movie for any collection.
Hidden treasure.......2007-06-15
A very funny movie with an amazing Brad Pitt as a Gipsy boxing champ. The storyline is great, and the movie never had a dull moment. The director keeps your attention by leading the audience through the story with video clip styled movie scenes. The actors themselves play accordingly, so after watching the movie you'll end up with a big smile on your face.
great guy flick.......2007-05-09
not a fan of leaving long detailed reviews but this movie is pretty much awesome from beginning to end...Def check it out!
Overrated.......2007-03-18
I was upset that I wasted my money on this film. The film is extremely overrated. At best it should have only gotten 3 stars. I do not see what there is to like about this film. It was not funny, the plot was stupid, everybody's running around trying to find a diamond and the movie just ends so abruptly, not a comfortable ending at all. If you have never seen this film I highly suggest that you rent it before you buy it.
The Fighting Irish.......2007-03-15
A few weeks ago I looked at Guy Ritchie's Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels (1998), and I was pleasantly surprised with what a good movie it was. So how could I resist picking up 2000's loosely tied in follow-on Snatch (aka Lock, Stock and Six Stolen Diamonds)?
In Snatch, several of the actors are back from "Lock, Stock", but all playing unrelated characters along side Brad Pitt. The first few minutes of Snatch looked like it was going to be a cash-in imitation of Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, but Snatch quickly developed its own story and characters.
Both "Lock, Stock" and Snatch are stylistically similar presentation-wise in a Pulp Fiction (1994) kind of way: Characters involved with various criminal activity are unaware of each other's presence throughout most of the movie, but then they are ultimately all connected by the closing credits.
There is a lot of violence seasoned with a good amount of black comedy. The acting is great. Ritchie is a master at getting a realistic reaction out of his cast...not just to situations and shocking acts of violence, but to people. The way the cast reacts to Brad Pitt's character is as believable as it is priceless.
Brad Pitt does a great job in this movie. I've seen a lot of criticism about Pitt's acting abilities, but I've got to say that I am mostly impressed with the roles that I've seen him in. And his character in Snatch, due to how well he played it, will stand out in my mind for a long time.
Jason Statham is as good as ever too. Like Samuel L. Jackson, Statham always seems to be the same guy in all of the movies he's in...same persona. And it just works every time.
Looking for a blast from the past with good actors, good action and a good story? Look no further. Here it is. Snatch may not be a collector's item, but it's worth the price.
And check out Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels too if you've not done so already.

The Spice Girls have plenty of personality, and that helps make up for the lapses in inspiration that keep their feature debut from being a truly good movie and potential cult piece. As with Richard Lester's Hard Day's Night, Spice World is about a few days in the collective life of the all-female British group; and the banter is suggestively representative of how the Girls all speak to one another. But the value of individual scenes is woefully inconsistent, reaching a low point in a dumb sequence when a gaggle of extraterrestrials hit them up for autographs. Fortunately, the film is full of great people, or in some cases good people doing great things: Richard E. Grant, Roger Moore, Alan Cummings, Mark McKinney, and tons of cameos from the likes of Elton John, Elvis Costello, and Bob Hoskins. You don't have to be 11 years old and female to get some enjoyment out of this movie, but it might help. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>

CLASSIC!.......2007-04-04
This was a movie I got for my daughters friend and she loves it! To remind you she is 13 and enjoys the lovable and light hearted movie!
The Best Stupid Movie I've Ever Seen.......2007-03-12
This movie is simply hilarious. I was quite captivated by the Spice Girls when this movie first came out. Shortly after, I outgrew them, but I still LOVE this movie. Anyone who has not seen it, needs to. Period.
Cruel Brittania.......2007-02-13
Britain, circa 1997. Tony Blair is elected P.M. Princess Di perishes. And the Spice Girls are unleashed to an unsuspecting public. This effort is an attempt to cash in on the phenomenon before a fickle populace turns their attention to the next best thing. To be fair, the girls are not to blame for what a tedious flick this is. Rather, they are appealing and prove to be the film's lone redeeming factor. The fault lies in the script that tries to do for the Spice Girls what "A Hard Days' Night" did for the Beatles. Whereas the Fab Four's film was full of wit and cogent commentary on Beatlemania this flick is unfunny and basically incoherent about what it's trying to say about the Spice craze. I was reminded more of the Monkees' "Head" than I was of "A Hard Days' Night". Lots of celeb cameos (Roger Moore, Elton John, et al) that amount to naught. Oh, well. On to "From Justin to Kelly".
Loves It.......2007-01-25
I had this movie on VHS, and lost it. One day I had this incredibly strong urge to watch it, so I ordered it and now I watch it all the time. It's fun to sing along to in a group. One thing, the dance instructor isn't saying "porta bra," he is actually saying "port de bras," a French term for movement of the arms that is used in ballet.
Spice!.......2007-01-19
I think this movie is great! it first came out when i was 2, and i remember all the time i wanted to watch it. just last year i saw it in the first in 9 years! all those GREAT song like "Too Much" and "Stop!". i also had "Spice Girls: One Hour of Girl Power" and my mum and dad used to put it on when i was born! i still reckon the spice girls are great and i cant belive that i forgot all about them! My Cousin just reminded my about them at my other cousins birthday. my favourite song would have to be "Who Do You Think You Are"

From the pages of Victorian literature come Captain Nemo, Dr. Jekyll (and his alter ego Mr. Hyde), Dorian Gray, Tom Sawyer, an Invisible Man, Mina Harker (from <I>Dracula</I>), and the hunter Allan Quatermain (Sean Connery), all brought together to combat an evil megalomaniac out to conquer the world. Hardly an original plot, but perhaps that's fitting for a movie sewn together like Frankenstein's monster. The movie rushes from one frenetic battle to another, replacing sense with spectacle--Nemo's submarine rising from the water, a warehouse full of zeppelins bursting into flame, Venice collapsing into its own canals; flashy, dumb, and completely incoherent. Fans of the original comic book will be disappointed. Also featuring Peta Wilson, Shane West, Stuart Townsend, Richard Roxburgh, and Jason Flemyng. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

I have to agree..........2007-05-23
With the majority so far here...this picture, panned almost to a man by the critics, was actually as enjoyable as I thought it would be before I started hearing the avalanche of negative reviews. Why did they hate this film so much?! It has NON-stop action, great art direction, good casting, (I am in love with Peta WIlson!) a nice, world-threatening plot, (probably yet another nod to Connery,) and passable special effects.
Perhaps it was the obvious hand that Marvel may have had in it...the whole movie reminds me an AWFUL lot of "Van Helsing", what with Mr. Hyde having a prominent part in it, on top of the presence of Richard Roxburgh, who played Dracula in that movie. "Van Helsing" also, in turn, bore a strong resemblance to "X-2, X-Men United". CGI effects are also a lot more obvious in Marvel's movies than they are in anybody else's, and they are here...THAT could have been a put-off...but for me, the not-so-great CGI was hidden well enough by shadows so that it wasn't as bad as it was in "The Hulk" or "Spiderman".
The group consists of: Allen Quartermain, (Connery...glad they didn't pick Richard Chamberlain,) Tom Sawyer, The Invisible Man, Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, Captain Nemo, (wait 'til you see the Nautilus...WOW!) and a persona de femme from "Dracula", Mina Harker, played by Ms. Wilson. Dorian Grey is along for the ride, too, but how much can you trust a character made up by Oscar Wilde?
It's great seeing Connery slug a villain and making it stick, at his age...(he's 77 now, can you believe it?) and Peta Wilson...YES!! Love that accent, love that stature, love that improvement-on-Julie-Christie thing she's got going for her....Love that car, too...I'll bet you anything either Panther Westwinds or Sbarro had something to do with that beast! That looked like a Lancia grille, too!
Anyway, there is, indeed, non-stop action! You really do root for the good guys, especially after it's revealed that the group's being conned by a surprising source, and just marvelling at the great sets and cinematography used in the film is a kick. I highly recommend this underrated little film, one that the critics made look much worse than it is!
3.5 stars--Over-the-top, ridiculous, fast paced, action adventure comic book style.......2007-04-28
I always feel you have to know what kind of movie you're about to watch so you can judge it accordingly. If it's based on a comic book it's going to be big, loud, dumb and ridiculous. If you don't go into "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen" expecting Oscar-caliber work you won't be disappointed.
The movie is set in 1899. Characters that we know from the literature of the times are assembled as the League: Alan Quartermain, The Invisible Man, Dorian Gray, Captain Nemo, Tom Sawyer, Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde and Dina Harker from Dracula. They are asked to work together to stop a man called The Phantom who is amassing a huge army and futuristic weapons to take over the world. You don't need to know much more because in the end it doesn't make any sense anyway. But why should it, it's source material is a comic book.
The movie is fast paced with some good special effects and well staged action scenes. There are also some bad effects and poorly staged action scenes, cliches aplenty and some dreadful dialog. I didn't take any of it too seriously and found myself enjoying the movie quite a bit. If you absolutely can't stand people with automatic weapons shooting at point blank range and not hitting anything or effects so overblown you can't believe them, this isn't the movie for you. On the other hand, if you can suspend your disbelief and just politely shake your head at some of the more ridiculous scenes, I would recommend "League of Extraordinary Gentlemen."
Surprisingly...decent *Spoilers*.......2007-03-21
3.5 stars. For me the movie didn't really start to be fun until after the Venice thingy. I didn't quite understand what that whole thing was about and then sighed with relief when that plot line turned out to be a ruse. I thought there was an interesting assembly of characters set in a Victorian age and I agree Dorian Gray stood out in his performance. I can't quite put my finger on what this film is missing, but I do know that it's missing something. Maybe a better explantion of bringing this assembly of people together in the first place when they, quite frankly, didn't have you in their radar to begin with. Couldn't he go about gathering what he needed from them without all this elaborate drama? Overall, this is an entertaining film and not at all as bad as I feared.
Love this movie!!.......2007-03-17
This is another great work by Sean Connery!! The movie is really cool too~ combining differen classic novels in one. I really like how it's done. Although squeezing in a female dracula in there so there's a woman is kinda funny... =P
Fun and Entertaining!.......2007-03-04
Ignore the critics and naysayers - Most of them wouldn't know entertainment unless it exploded in front of their face - Also, people (especially young people don't read the classics anymore - I say this and I'm only 33) - One of the best things about this movie is the use of the literary characters (Love the casting) - I've never read the comic, so I had not been influenced by it upon watching this movie - However, I have read most of the novels these characters were based upon - Fantastic to see them brought to life on the big screen! - dark, somber - perfect mood for this time in history - but i can see why this movie didn't go down well - not enough dumb action, useless bloodshed, stupid jokes, and whiny characters for the masses

Critics were decidedly mixed about this 1996 drama from Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci, and the movie enjoyed only a brief theatrical release. Now it's best known for its early appearance by Liv Tyler as a 19-year-old beauty named Lucy who summers at a villa in Tuscany with a variety of artistic types who immediately respond to her inspirational innocence. An amateur poet who has decided it's time to lose her virginity, Lucy has come to Italy after the death of her mother, who visited this artist's refuge 20 years earlier. Several young Italian men find Lucy quite heavenly (she is, after all, Liv Tyler), and she's not immune to their attentions, but she'd rather spend time with a playwright (Jeremy Irons) who is dying of AIDS and therefore has something other than sex on his mind. The movie's plot is about as substantial as Tyler's character (she's sexy, all right, but hardly an intellectual muse), but Stealing Beauty creates a serene mood that's so soothing you'll want to book a flight to Tuscany immediately, just to soak up the setting's idyllic atmosphere. If you're in the right frame of mind, this movie is like a balm for the soul, and Tyler and Bertolucci can share the credit for making this two-hour vacation so charmingly relaxing. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
What happened to Bertolucci ?.......2007-06-12
This is what I think every time I watch his later work. Is it really the same Bertolucci who made "La Commare Secca", and "The Conformist", and "The Spider's Stratagem" ? What happened to this director who certainly had a genius and could have been on a par with the Italian giants: Fellini, Antonioni and Pasolini ?
This film is yet another example of a pitiful deterioration that began somewhere in "1900" and progressed through "The Sheltering Sky" and "The Last Emperor".
Often it seems to have been shot by a young amateur. A bunch of not particularly interesting people stuck in a country house, an American virgin trying to have it - there isn't really much to work with. The characters, with a possible exception of that of Jeremy Irons', are shallow, often annoyingly so.
There are too many people, there is no time to explore any of them. The guy who lives deluding himself into thinking that he is a sculptor, is outright pathetic, given the miserably low artistic level of his "work".
There isn't really much to write about. If you are a Bertolucci fan, then you should probably see it. Otherwise, you wouldn't lose or miss much.
There are some occasional sequences which reminded me of Bertolucci as he used to be. It has been a pleasure to see Jean Marais. The Italian countryside is of course beautiful. What else ? Well, that's about it.
It is a grossly overrated, pathetically pretentious low-grate production, in my humble opinion. Those bows to Antonioni's "The Red Desert", with paint-games, and to "Blow Up", with the pantomime actors who are as extraneous to the film as so many other things, only make the show more woeful.
I continue to hope that Bertolucci will come to his senses and remember that he probably still has his genius buried somewhere deep inside. Perhaps, it is a vain hope - but miracles do happen sometimes...
Tuscan Inspiration.......2007-05-07
Stealing Beauty is a must see for every teenage girl with a passion for art and life. The best review I can give of this film is to relate my personal experiences. I first saw Stealing Beauty when I was 17 and at an arts boarding school for dance. In the wonderous and confusing time of late teen female years, standing on the precipice of when to become a woman and how long to hold onto childhood this was the first movie I could identify with. I am an un-American minded American girl and to watch the weaving story of Lucy (Liv Tyler) amongst a variety of artists living in the warm Tuscan hills of Italy trying to find the answers to the secrets her mother left behind and come to terms with virginity and love, I was deeply touched. This movie is one of the reasons I waited for all of my first experiences to be with a man I truly loved and now we are planning our wedding in Florence, Italy!
YES!.......2007-01-23
One of the best movies of all time! Bertolucci captures it all: everything is well-rounded, every intimate moment realistically captured, the scenes, the emotion, the beauty and the avant guarde. This is avant-Guarde cinema at its best, it doesn't isolate the viewer, but wholeheartedly brings them into a brave new beautiful world. Lucy is leisurely looking for her father, life and love in an isolated arts commune in Italy. You will forget where you are and how you think you should be living after seeing such free and open beauty of people and interchanging lives. Gorgeous!
Stealing Beauty.......2007-01-17
This is a GREAT movie! I LOVE the soundtrack! This movie is a fav of mine and got me into TripHop. DaveC
A Beautiful Film.......2007-01-08
"Stealing Beauty" is a beautiful film, with beautiful people and beautiful, lush settings. The film is directed by Bernardo Bertolucci, the Italian director behind films like "Last Tango in Paris" and
"The Dreamers." This film is probably one of his most overlooked. I wanted to get it because I think Liv Tyler is gorgeous and she looks even more beautiful than usual in this film...The movie, judging by reviews I've seen on Netflix, doesn't have a lot of people who like it. One person even remarked that you'd be better off getting a travel video, but this is actually a pretty good film. Tyler plays a virginal 19-year-old girl named Lucy Harmon, whose mother (a poet) has recently passed away and whose father has sent her back to the Tuscan villa inhabited by artists that her mother used to be friends with. The people that own the place are Diane (Sinead Cusack) and Ian (Donal McCann), a sculptor whose sculptures line the yard. Other people are there as well, including Miranda (Rachel Weisz) and her boyfriend Richard (D.W. Moffett)...Also there is Alex (Jeremy Irons), a writer who takes a liking to Lucy. Lucy spends her day writing poetry (that she quickly burns) and looking for insight into her past. She believes that her father is not really HER father and is trying to figure out who is. A lot of people who see this movie will only be seeing it to watch Tyler disrobe...Which she does, but it's not in enough to abundance to be the only reason you see this movie. Even though I liked it, I found myself wondering what was the point? The point of a movie like "The Texas Chainsaw Massacre" is to horrify. The point of "Pulp Fiction" is to entertain and electrify. But what is the point of Stealing Beauty? The plot can be summed up in a few words and the movie plays like quiet jazz music. Maybe the 'beauty' in the title sums up this film. It focuses on beauty, but not just exterior beauty. The movie has a lot of beautiful people like
Liv Tyler and Rachel Weisz, but then there's the Jeremy Irons character. He's sick, almost bald, and is always pale but likes to admire the beauty around him. A lot of the characters are into art;
Lucy does poetry, Ian sculpts, Richard acts, and Alex writes..."Stealing Beauty" is not so much about plot as it is about atmosphere and feeling. The way you might like a gray, rainy day because of how you feel not what the day looks like. Another film that plays like this could become dull, but "Stealing Beauty" (for me) was never dull...That could be attributed to the spectacular performances, which are all low-key. Tyler is perfectly cast; she looks so innocent and vulnerable in the film. Irons gives one of his best performances. The man can do more with a whisper than most actors can with a flamboyant speech. It's not perfect, but it is a good film that's easy to enjoy. Just kick back, enjoy the scenery, and bask in the beauty of it.

If you've ever indulged a rock & roll fantasy, <I>Rock Star</I> will give you the vicarious thrill of seeing that fantasy come to life. That's what happens when talented tribute-band singer Chris Cole (Mark Wahlberg) is tapped to replace his idol as frontman for 1980s metal gods Steel Dragon. Chris becomes the groupie-laden "Izzy," his manager girlfriend (Jennifer Aniston) grows weary of sex 'n' drugs on tour, and <I>Rock Star</I> plays out its utterly conventional plot line. Despite the casting of real rockers to support Wahlberg's underrated performance (nicely matched by Aniston and Timothy Spall as Steel Dragon's road manager), his character is too rigidly written to follow an obligatory rise and fall, and even its basis in fact (inspired by Tim "Ripper" Owens's recruitment into Judas Priest) can't conceal the movie's predictable formula. As a cautionary tale it's routine, but as a leather-pants love story, <I>Rock Star</I>'s got enough good karma to keep its dream alive. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Product Description
Chris Cole (MARK WAHLBERG) was born to rock. His longtime girlfriend Emily (JENNIFER ANISTON) believes Chris's talent could take him all the way - but instead of writing his own music, Chris worships at the altar of Bobby Beers, the fiery frontman for Steel Dragon, the heavy metal rock legends that both inspire and consume his life. By day, Chris still lives at home with his parents and spends his days repairing copy machines, push-starting his sputtering Dodge Dart and fighting with his brother. But when Chris takes the stage, all of that disappears. When he's fronting Blood Pollution, Pennsylvania's premiere Steel Dragon tribute band, Chris Cole is Bobby Beers - mesmerizing audiences with his perfect imitation of Beers' electrifying vocals and sexy snarl. Blood Pollution's low-rent recreation of the Dragon's elaborate arena shows drive the locals (including Chris's loving parents and amused choir director) into a head-banging, hair-whipping frenzy. The night his bandmates boot him out of the group he founded, Chris is devastated - until an unexpected phone call changes his life forever: he, Chris Cole, has been tapped to replace Bobby Beers as the lead singer of Steel Dragon. In an instant, Chris rockets to the dizzying heights of sudden stardom, rising from devotee to icon, from the ultimate rock fan to the ultimate rock god - the wanna-be who got to be. So what happens when an average guy gets everything he wants... and discovers it's not enough?

Rock on! .......2007-05-09
I had a good time watching this movie. It's entertaining and one that you can watch more than once and still enjoy. Rock Star also had a great cast to help keep both the action and the melodrama on an even keel.
love the rock and roll music.......2007-03-18
the movie proves that everyone has a dream, and some day it will bw achieved thru hard work.
Pretty Good Rock Movie for the Hair Era.......2007-02-16
This at least glosses over many elements of rock stardom and in some instances, the acting and situations are pulled off very well. The hero worship, incredible fan dedication, sex, drugs, sex, alcohol, sex, heartbreak, band breakups, life on the road, sex, drugs, hair, leather, backstage passes (which lead to more sex and drugs) are covered pretty well. Fun flick!
AWESOME 80'S MOVIE TRIBUTE!! but kind of touching!!!!.......2006-11-30
I though that this movie would be cool as Detroit Rock City or Dazed and Confused but is not! Rock Star is not exacly a "rock movie tribute for the past deacades" like Detroit Rock City, this is more like a dramatic story of a rocker fan in the 80's.
But DON'T GET ME WRONG! this movie is COOL!! The main character in the story hang out with the band, gettin wasted, going with groupies, lisening to rock, flashing devil horn signs and teaching his little bother how to be a HEAVY METAL FAN!
The Cons are: Most of the soundtracks were not taken from true 80's rock bands, they were made by this fictional band with fictional songs called Dragon Steel. The movie have some touching moments that spoil the fun, there were no comments about 80's rock bands, the movie wasn't that funny and the ending was kind of predictable.
P.S: Is worth buying it, but if you are looking for cool funny rocking movies of past decades then this is not for you.
ADIOS.
