Product Description

When Harry Potter's name emerges from the Goblet of Fire, he becomes a competitor in a grueling battle for glory among three wizarding schools - the Triwizard Tournament. But since Harry never submitted his name for the Tournament, who did? Now Harry must confront a deadly dragon, fierce water demons and an enchanted maze only to find himself in the cruel grasp of He Who Must Not Be Named. In this fourth film adaptation of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series, everything changes as Harry, Ron and Hermione leave childhood forever and take on challenges greater than anything they could have imagined.
Running Time: 157 min.

The fourth entry in the Harry Potter saga could be retitled <I>Fast Times at Hogwarts</I>, where finding a date to the winter ball is nearly as terrifying as worrying about Lord Voldemort's return. Thus, the young wizards' entry into puberty (and discovery of the opposite sex) opens up a rich mining field to balance out the dark content in the fourth movie (and the stories are only going to get darker). Mike Newell (<I>Four Weddings and a Funeral</I>) handily takes the directing reins and eases his young cast through awkward growth spurts into true young actors. Harry (Daniel Radcliffe, more sure of himself) has his first girl crush on fellow student Cho Chang (Katie Leung), and has his first big fight with best bud Ron (Rupert Grint). Meanwhile, Ron's underlying romantic tension with Hermione (Emma Watson) comes to a head over the winter ball, and when she makes one of those girl-into-woman Cinderella entrances, the boys' reactions indicate they've all crossed a threshold.

But don't worry, there's plenty of wizardry and action in <I>Goblet of Fire</I>. When the deadly Triwizard Tournament is hosted by Hogwarts, Harry finds his name mysteriously submitted (and chosen) to compete against wizards from two neighboring academies, as well as another Hogwarts student. The competition scenes are magnificently shot, with much-improved CGI effects (particularly the underwater challenge). And the climactic confrontation with Lord Voldemort (Ralph Fiennes, in a brilliant bit of casting) is the most thrilling yet. <I>Goblet</I>, the first installment to get a PG-13 rating, contains some violence as well as disturbing images for kids and some barely shrouded references at sexual awakening (Harry's bath scene in particular). The 2 1/2-hour film, lean considering it came from a 734-page book, trims out subplots about house-elves (they're not missed) and gives little screen time to the standard crew of the other Potter films, but adds in more of Britain's finest actors to the cast, such as Brendan Gleeson as Mad-Eye Moody and Miranda Richardson as Rita Skeeter. Michael Gambon, in his second round as Professor Dumbledore, still hasn't brought audiences around to his interpretation of the role he took over after Richard Harris died, but it's a small smudge in an otherwise spotless adaptation. <I>--Ellen A. Kim</I>

<b>On the DVD</b>
The highlight of the two-disc set is a half-hour conversation with actors Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint. They discuss their reactions to the film and other topics with British writer Richard Curtis . Then they answer questions from contest-winning fans, such as what are their favorite kids' books (Watson bypasses the obvious answer in favor of Roald Dahl and Philip Pullman) and what scenes are they looking forward to in upcoming films. More routine extras include the "Reflections on the Fourth Film" featurette (14 min.), though it has comments from some of the other young cast members, and "Preparing for the Yule Ball" (9 min.). The 10 minutes of additional scenes are mostly skulking and skullduggery, plus a long musical number from the ball. The remaining material is grouped along the lines of the Triwizard Tournament, with behind-the-scenes looks at each of the competitions (about 22 min. total), two longer featurettes on He Who Must Not Be Named (11 min.) and the workday of the other contestants (Robert Pattinson, Stanislav Ianevski, and Clémence Poésy, 13 min.), and four games, playable with the directional arrows on the remote control, that can be frustrating to figure out. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>

3 out of 5 stars Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire.......2007-06-16

First off, I thought this movie was quite entertaining and exciting in a thrill-ride sort of way, but it was the weakest film in the Harry Potter series. Many people will disagree with me, but this film lacked in plot and character development. The Triwizard champions had a total of two or less lines in the movie, and they weren't shown enough to grow accustomed to them. Mike Newell might be a great director, but he didn't capture the mood and essence of the Harry Potter world. Every time I was getting ready to settle with a situation or conflict, the movie took me to an entirely different ball park. The film never settled... it was in a constant rush.
Before the movie premiered in theaters, I remember hearing Newell say in an interview that he took out a few unnecessary subplots. He definitely took out many unnecessary subplots, and he replaced them with some other unnecessary scenes. There was a part in the movie where "Karkaroff" (The Durmstrang Headmaster)is shown secretly entering the lonely Great Hall. It's a very suspicious scene that leaves the audience wondering: What happens?... Nothing... nothing happens. That scene was just placed there for the sake of adding suspense to the story. The Beauxbatons champion, Fleur Delacour, was a very intriguing character in the book, and I was very disappointed when her total screen time added up to about three minutes. I had no complaints about her look, because I think she was as beautiful as they described her in the book, yet the director didn't take advantage of her screen time. In fact, the director didn't take advantage of any actor's screen time. Rita Skeeter, the haughty reporter for the Daily Prophet (played by the talented Miranda Richardson), was a very random character in the film, but in the book, she was a very well-developed character.
I'm sorry to say, but I think this movie would've been better off in the hands of another director. I think Alfonso Cuaron and Chris Columbus captured the true spirit of J.K. Rowling's magical wizarding world. Chris Columbus portrayed the world as colorful, yet filled with hidden dangers; Cuaron made the third film dark and more adult, still maintaining a magical tone; Mike Newell... he created a tone that was all over the place.
I am no director, but I can say that Mike Newell definitely needs to work on character development in his films. I heard he made the film "Mona Lisa Smile", and when I saw that movie, I had the same complaints I had for Harry Potter 4: "It just could've been better". Mona Lisa Smile lacked in proper character development as well. I know we live in a society that demands instant action and conflict in its flicks, but there are ways of doing that without rushing plot or character development. I'm just glad he's not doing the next Harry Potter film.
Although I have some complaints about this film, I still have to say that I enjoy watching it because it is entertaining and it is a thrill ride; so I do recommend it for that purpose. Thank You for reading. =)

Come on. It's Harry Potter. You know you want to purchase it :D

3 out of 5 stars What happened here?.......2007-06-11

Before I begin let me say that I just recently discovered how amazing the Harry Potter series is. Although I had seen the first 2 movies I never thought of reading the books until recently. That being said let me add that I thought the first two movies were very good representations of the
books and the characters that are used in the movies are true to what Rowlings was trying to portray in her books. Now I turn my attention to a heavy weight of a book in Goblet of Fire. Amazing book and I was looking forward to finishing this and then seeing how the movie did this one justice, was I disappointed.

I am terribly sorry but I am NOT going to defend this movie and cry like many of the other people who reviewed this movie. "The book is over 700 pages", "there is so much detail" blah, blah blah. Well if it is that difficult then DON'T INSULT ME BY MAKING THIS MOVIE AT ALL. If I am interested in the story and the movie is an accurate portrail, I don't mind sitting through 3 to 3.5 hours to get the story right. That concept worked for the Lord of the Rings, why couldn't it work in this case as well?

The best part of the book was the shroud of mystery surrounding the person who was Lord Voldemorts other faithful follower. The movie decided to destroy that right at the beginning by showing a 3rd person in the house with Wormtail and Voldemort. Then lets just skip Bertha Jorkins, without whom Voldemort would have never of known about the world cup and Triwizard Tournament. The book did an excellent job at putting doubts in the readers mind about number of characters 2 of which, Ludo Bagman and Winky the house-elf never made the movie. At no point in the movie did the viewer get the real story on Barty Crouch. A power hungry anti-dark wizard with a private life filled with personal tragedy. The Pensieve trials in the movie were terrible. They completely hacked and changed the story, making Crouches knowledge of his son a shock at the trial in the movie. What about him being in prison and supposedly dying in Azkaban?
This knowledge gave the reader a sense that the son could never have been part of the plot at Hogwarts to harm Harry Potter. The movie instead, shows the son at the trial, the same face you see at the beginning of the movie so it is easy to deduce that he is connected to the plot against Harry. In the book the son's trial was surronded by the story of Neville's parents and the use of the Cruciatus curse. The movie went as far as to show Neville's complete demoralizing nature after Moody used the curse in class but then the movie let the story dangle and fade away.
The explaination about why two wands bonded during the battle was weak as well. I do agree with another reviewer that the story of Rita Skeeter was weak and not even needed. In the book the story was to show her as a pushy, emblesher and person just trying to get a "Juicy" story even if it ruined other peoples lives. Why not go the extra distance and show how she got her stories and Hermiones vendetta and capture of Rita in the end. If they weren't going to do that why not just replace that story altogther with the house-elf story and S.P.E.W.

Finally there are some good points. The Goblet scenes and actual Triwizard Tournament was done well. I thought the first two tasks were done very well. The 3rd stage however was pretty lame, as if it just got in the way of the confrontation between Harry and the resurrected lord himself. No creatures, no riddle just a waste.

So there are my 2 brass knuts worth, the book deserved much better than this. I am very disappointed here and even more disappointed in the people who read this book but gave this movie 5 stars. To them and this movie I say Riddikulus!!

First sequels are the true test of an enduring movie franchise, and <I>Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets</I> passes with flying colors. Expanding upon the lavish sets, special effects, and grand adventure of <I>Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone</I>, Harry's second year at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry involves a darker, more malevolent tale (parents with younger children beware), beginning with the petrified bodies of several Hogwarts students and magical clues leading Harry (Daniel Radcliffe), Ron (Rupert Grint), and Hermione (Emma Watson) to a 50-year-old mystery in the monster-laden Chamber of Secrets. House elves, squealing mandrakes, giant spiders, and venomous serpents populate this loyal adaptation (by <I>Sorcerer's Stone</I> director Chris Columbus and screenwriter Steve Kloves), and Kenneth Branagh delightfully tops the supreme supporting cast as the vainglorious charlatan Gilderoy Lockhart (be sure to view past the credits for a visual punchline at Lockhart's expense). At 161 minutes, the film suffers from lack of depth and uneven pacing, and John Williams' score mostly reprises established themes. The young, fast-growing cast offers ample compensation, however, as does the late Richard Harris in his final screen appearance as Professor Albus Dumbledore. Brimming with cleverness, wonderment, and big-budget splendor, <I>Chamber</I> honors the legacy of J.K. Rowling's novels. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

4 out of 5 stars Pretty Cool!.......2007-06-13

I liked this movie a lot. I watched it in class. It was good, other than the violence. Dobi was pretty funny. He was the alien creature that appeared in Harry's room. I watched this in class, too. It was funny when there was a shadowy girl floating in the bathroom! It was a fun movie.

NOTE: Rated PG. Parental Guidance Suggested--Some Material may not be suitable for Children.

Rated PG for scary images, mild creature violence and some brief mild language. May not be appropriate for young children under age 8.

5 out of 5 stars Liked The First One Better.......2007-05-25

I liked the first one better, probably because everything was new. But this one is really good too. You need to read the book though, that's why I'm really posting this, to tell people to read the book. It has so much more.

I have these movies and love them. I bought the first movie also for my sister for her birthday.

It's Harry Potter... I mean let's not mince words. Chris Columbus directed, so it ain't the best adaptation it could be, but for what it is it ain't bad.

Amazon.com

The latest entry in the <I>Harry Potter saga could be retitled Fast Times at Hogwarts, where finding a date to the winter ball is nearly as terrifying as worrying about Lord Voldemort's return. Thus, the young wizards' entry into puberty (and discovery of the opposite sex) opens up a rich mining field to balance out the dark content in the fourth movie (and the stories are only going to get darker). Mike Newell (Four Weddings and a Funeral) handily takes the directing reins and eases his young cast through awkward growth spurts into true young actors.

But don't worry, there's plenty of wizardry and action in Goblet of Fire. Goblet, the first installment to get a PG-13 rating, contains some violence as well as disturbing images for kids and some barely shrouded references at sexual awakening (Harry's bath scene in particular). --Ellen A. Kim

5 out of 5 stars Review Harry Potter?.......2007-06-14

I love this and all the Harry Potter movies. People have said to me that to love or believe in the characters gives the impression that you believe in witch craft, which is a crock! You do not have to believe in one in order to love or care about the other.

Aimed directly at a mainstream audience, The Patriot qualifies as respectable entertainment, but anyone expecting a definitive drama about the American Revolution should look elsewhere. Rising above the blatant crowd pleasing of Stargate, Independence Day, and Godzilla, director Roland Emmerich crafts a marvelous re-creation of South Carolina in the late 1770s (aided immeasurably by cinematographer Caleb Deschanel), and Robert Rodat's screenplay offers the same balance of epic scale and emotional urgency that elevated his earlier script for Saving Private Ryan. Unfortunately, Emmerich embraces clichés and hackneyed melodrama that a more gifted director would have avoided. Instead of attempting a truly great film about the most pivotal years of American history, Emmerich settles for a standard revenge plot with the Revolutionary War as an incidental backdrop.</p>

On those terms, the film is engrossing and sufficiently intelligent, especially when militia leader Benjamin Martin (Mel Gibson) cagily negotiates with British General Cornwallis (Tom Wilkinson) in one of the most rewarding scenes. For the most part, the story concerns Martin's anguished quest for revenge against ruthless redcoat Colonel Tavington (played with snide relish by Jason Isaacs), and the rise to manhood of Martin's eldest son, Gabriel (Heath Ledger), whose battlefield honor exceeds even that of his brutally volatile father. At its best, The Patriot conveys the horror of war among innocent civilians, and the epic battle scenes, while by no means masterful, are graphically intense and impressive. And although Ledger's love interest (Lisa Brenner) is too bland to register much emotion, the focus on family (which frequently relegates the war to background history) provides a suitable vehicle for Gibson, who matches his achievement in Braveheart with an effectively brooding performance. --Jeff Shannon </p>

2 out of 5 stars MASTERS OF PROPAGANDA..........2007-04-30

Patriot brings to the screen a fictitious story from the American Revolution, or else the director and his sponsors' version of what they would like the people to believe as historical fact.
A quiet farmer and veteran of the French and Indian Wars is "forced" into partaking in the American Revolution on the side of the Continentals as a result of a sadistic British Colonel...
    The good things first:
    1) The cast, the setting, the battle scenes, and the costumes are all very good.
    2) The film does show (though sparsely) the pivotal role that France played during the War, without whom the Continentals would have been defeated.
    3) The Tomahawk trophy off a fallen Indian warrior (subtly) insinuating the ghastly relations between colonists and the natives i.e. the traditional hatred between the lower class North American colonists and the Indians (not a surprise considering the content of the Declaration of Independence: "the merciless Indian savages, whose known rule of warfare is an undistinguished destruction of all ages, sexes, and conditions").
    On the negative side now:
    1) It's a biased, one-sided approach to a major historical event which one would think by now would be able to be presented in an objective manner. It's the same old/usual cliches involving one of Hollywood's favorite villains/scapegoats: the British (it must have been really difficult to include Germans, Serbs or Russians in this one...).
For starters, misusing the term Patriot in referring to Englishmen who betrayed their government, their country, and their flag, is reminiscent of the Soviet Union and how they christened their ultimate tool (newspaper) of propaganda Pravda, or "Truth."
Similarly, the British Colonel asked the Loyalist how he could betray his neighbors and not the other way around.
    2) From the beginning, the setting is South Carolina and all that is heard throughout the film is either a British or a Northern (Yankee) accent!
    3) South Carolina was home to most of the 13 colonies' Loyalists, even to the point of outnumbering the Continentals, yet all we saw was but a few.
    4) At the time when the S.C. Assembly voted in favor of secession not a single Red Coat or a single Loyalist were in the vicinity! Not a single shot was fired...
    5) There is no clarification that taxes set by the British Government are taxes set by King and Parliament, not King George III alone.
    6) Throughout the film the Continentals are presented in good light while the Red Coats are demonized. Oh, I forgot; the British have to be the baddies while the Continentals are the heroes... Have mercy on us, please!
    7) The movie does not really portray the double-crossing merchants, farmers, and politicians that supported whichever side the wind happened to be blowing in, always in search of profit and personal gain. Nor does it show the clash within the Continental side (the undermining, the personality clashes, favoritism, public relations, political connections), between Congress and the Army, as well as the farmers and most importantly the merchants profiteering at the expense of whoever/whichever side etc.
    8) Martin's slaves were not slaves; they were "free men" working of their own will...
    9) Does not show what the Continentals did to the Loyalists during and after the Revolution.
    10) Blacks and Whites fighting together against the British was simply absurd for that era. What's more, the British policy, which was indeed to free the slaves from the colonists, is ridiculed in the movie...
In short, the film does a good job, as it should do, in presenting a case study on the use of propaganda on unaware people and the danger it poses.
If the American Revolution is what you had in mind, check out the AMAZING films Revolution starring Al Pacino and Donald Sutherland, and Benedict Arnold: A Question of Honor starring Aidan Quinn and Kelsey Grammer.
In conclusion, the potential for a great movie was there. A shame really... 2 Stars

4 out of 5 stars if you can muscle your way through the historical blunders you got a good movie.......2007-04-27

a very good movie about the creation of america.but the following are big blunders that make it not perfect.1. all of the men look away while firing ,this although was tought up to a piont, near the end of the war this was given up.2. the battle of the cowpens is very unaccurate such as the fact that no french took part in the battle(but its only based on the cowpens any way).3. all men march shoulder to shoulder , this was NOT tought by any side that late in the war.plus many other small things.overall its good put not accurate

    3 out of 5 stars Braveheart Redone.......2007-03-22

Yes, it was. Braveheart taken to a different century and country. Otherwise, it's pretty much the same movie. -Shrugs.- I think Mel has something against the English.

Oddly enough, the best part of this movie was the English, vilified character of Colonel William Tavington, played by one of my top two actors, Jason Isaacs. Isaacs has always been a phenomenal actor, and this time, I think, he saved this movie from flopping.

The coolest thing about this movie was Tavington's Green Dragoons... or was it his long silky brown hair... or was it his accent? Hmm. It's a little of everything, I think.

Anyway. Great movie for the sake of seeing Isaacs in another awesome role.
Gibson? Not so much. See Braveheart.

5 out of 5 stars seen it many times.......2007-03-07

I've seen this movie enough times to know that i won't get tired of it easily. it's brutal enough to hold my attention during the fighting scenes while the rest of the storyline's plot doesn't let you go during the down time. I don't know and don't care if this movie was based on factual or fictional characters, so whether it is historically accurate is the last thing on my list of worries.
What i did like was how the protagonist maintained a reluctant stance until given no other choice. it felt real, and the reactions of all the other characters felt real as well; they didn't feel scripted. That is about the only concern i have with most of these past war movies and that's something i flushed away as soon as i started watching it the first time. one of my top movies of all time.

    5 out of 5 stars Bravo!.......2007-03-04

Love this film, it makes you laugh, cry and feel a lot of other emotions when viewing. Great performances by Heath Ledger and Mel Gibson. Beautiful countrysides are shown with epic battle scenes that test every man's last breath to truly fight for what they believe in. Fantastic and I give it five stars, it never loses value in repeated viewings for us.

Ridley Scott's <I>Black Hawk Down</I> conveys the raw, chaotic urgency of ground-force battle in a worst-case scenario. With exacting detail, the film re-creates the American siege of the Somalian city of Mogadishu in October 1993, when a 45-minute mission turned into a 16-hour ordeal of bloody urban warfare. Helicopter-borne U.S. Rangers were assigned to capture key lieutenants of Somali warlord Muhammad Farrah Aidid, but when two Black Hawk choppers were felled by rocket-propelled grenades, the U.S. soldiers were forced to fend for themselves in the battle-torn streets of Mogadishu, attacked from all sides by armed Aidid supporters. Based on author Mark Bowden's bestselling account of the battle, Scott's riveting, action-packed film follows a sharp ensemble cast in some of the most authentic battle sequences ever filmed. The loss of 18 soldiers turned American opinion against further involvement in Somalia, but <I>Black Hawk Down</I> makes it clear that the men involved were undeniably heroic. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars Review: Deluxe Edition 3-disc set.......2007-06-24

I rate BLACK HAWK DOWN only below BAND OF BROTHERS as the best war dvd available (I don't include SAVING PRIVATE RYAN because of the Hollywoodized, heavy-handed ending) for its accurate and graphic portrayal of combat.
I have the 3-disc Deluxe edition, which I recommend over the 1-disc because it includes the History Channel's THE TRUE STORY OF "BLACK HAWK DOWN" and PBS' FRONTLINE: AMBUSH IN MOGADISHU. The tv versions give more information on the political situation which led to the battle (which are only briefly mentioned in the movie) and provide more accurate accounts of the battle (the movie had to change some details in order to fit the entire battle into the given time, make it easier for the movie audience to understand and dramatize certain events). The 3-disc set also includes features showing the enormous amounts of computer-generated special effects which are so realistic that I was unaware they were CGI (the first Black Hawk helicopter crashing is entirely CGI, the dust clouds during the helicopter landings are CGI, many of the explosions, etc. are also CGI).
In response to some earlier reviews, here's some clarifications:
    1. In the movie, Pvt. Blackburn is shown falling from the helicopter rope after the helicopter suddenly swerves to avoid a rocket-propelled grenade. This is a dramatized version--the dvd commentary by the real Sgt. Eversmann said there's no real explanation for why Blackburn fell from the rope as Blackburn doesn't remember although everyone remembers the helicopter did suddenly jerk, but not to avoid a RPG.
    2. Col. McKnight (Tom Sizemore) actually did walk upright during combat despite the constant Somali gunfire. This is mentioned in the book and the dvd commentary.
For the very best in movie portrayal of combat and war, I highly recommend this dvd set.

    5 out of 5 stars Don't listen to them!.......2007-06-11

The extra footage on this version means that my original copy is for sale.
Nothing extra as far as what happens, but great additional human reflections.

4 out of 5 stars Rangers Lead The Way.......2007-05-31

It's a great movie for a guy who just endured a chick flick with his girl. It puts manhood back in you!

4 out of 5 stars Keeping it real.......2007-05-20

Having served, I appreciated the reality with which Black Hawk Down was presented. For example, the Ranger falling to his death because he missed the repeling rope as the Black Hawk manuevers to avoids enemy fire, showcases an unavoidable mishap. For me this movie revealed some of the subtle and rarely talked about realities soldiers face daily. It also showcased some of the overlooked political realties. Conflict is conflict; but real combat is a major advantage for real life guerilla fighters. Yes, our soldiers are well trained, but nothing prepares a soldier for combat like combat. Our soldiers do not have the opportunity to fight as much as militia fighters; yet we are always fighting battles in our enemies backyard creating a distinct disadvantage for our soldiers; and if they loose, for our militarys' reputation. And we always underestimate their (third world guerilla fighters) level of experience. We usually fail to take them serious until they kill one of our soldiers. This arrogant American mentality puts our soldiers at another distinct disadvantage. In one of the scenes the Ranger commander disagrees with the Delta Forces Non-Commissioned Officer In Charge (NCOIC) and subsequently reprimands him by telling him, "you are combat ineffective soldier!," for disobeying his directive in front of his subordinates. This may have been the most realistic depiction in the entire movie. Anyone who's been in the Army knows that Delta Forces soldiers are on an elite level rarely seen in any military setting and should be respected as such. It's not that I recommend or condone disobeying orders, I think experience trumps ego's and should be set aside during stressful situations. The egotistical infighting of arrogant leadership may be the military's most lethal killer....of American troops! Ironically, one of the most pronounced differences between the experienced and nonexperienced combat soldier, is the level of compassion with which they approach life. Those soldiers that have experienced combat shy away from bravado, while those that haven't actually seen war seek the glory of the sterotypical brave man. This overlooked aspect of military life is rarely exposed, but still puts lives at risk. "It's amazing what we can be accomplish, if it weren't for egos," Ronald Reagan. The method of international target selection also needs to be improved. The U.S. will always be called upon to help other nations with their political mishaps. (And don't discount the difficulties NATO Forces have communicating with each other.) But at some point we're going have to learn to be painfully selective. Don't we owe it to the parents of the young men and women who are, were and will be killed or maimed, to produce tangible results from these skeptical overseas missions? I'm sure they would think so. It's condescending of us (the US) to downplay the patriotism of the families of our nations fallen soldiers, by nonchalantly selecting insignificant international political targets. Black Hawk Down not only successfully salutes the soldiers involved in the Somalia experience with it's authenticity, it succeeds in showing the audience the always miserable and chaotic circumstances our soldiers face while in the exercise of heated international conflict.

4 out of 5 stars "We Lost the Initiative".......2007-05-10

"Black Hawk Down" is not a complex movie, but it is gritty and real. Holding nothing back in the violence stakes, it plunges the viewer right into the middle of a ground battle in an urban setting.

Following a unit of Rangers in an extraction mission in Somalia's Mogadishu. The mission goes disastrously wrong when the local militia decide to hit back. The militia shoot down a helicopter and the mission goes downhill from there.

The action scenes, of which the movie is full, are gritty, realistic and close up. The violence is reasonably graphic, but not overly so. I think We Were Soldiers (Widescreen Edition) is more graphic in this sense. "Black Hawk Down" makes the action frenetic and dirty, and that makes it one exciting movie to watch.

The movie does something to introduce the complexities of operating in Somalia, and the obstacles that faced the US forces there. The fact that Hoot could wander about the arms markets in Mogadishu goes some way to increase the confusing relations between the locals and the US forces.

For a movie heavy on action, lots of battles and tension, but relatively light on the intellectual loading, "Black Hawk Down" is a great one. I loved it and have seen it a number of times.

From the blockbuster-making team who produced and directed PEARL HARBOR and THE ROCK (Jerry Bruckheimer and Michael Bay) comes the biggest movie of 1998 -- ARMAGEDDON! Starring the explosive talents of Bruce Willis (DIE HARD), Academy Award(R)-winners Ben Affleck (GOOD WILL HUNTING) and Billy Bob Thornton (SLING BLADE), Liv Tyler (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), Steve Buscemi (CON AIR), and Will Patton (INVENTING THE ABBOTTS), ARMAGEDDON is a meteor storm of action-adventure moviemaking that has you on the edge of your seat forgetting to breathe! When NASA's executive director, Dan Truman (Thornton), realizes the Earth has 18 days before it's obliterated by a meteor the size of Texas, he has only one option -- land a ragtag team of roughneck oil drillers on the asteroid and drop a nuclear warhead into its core. Spectacular special effects, laugh-out-loud humor, great characters, riveting storytelling, and heartfelt emotion make ARMAGEDDON an exhilarating thrill ride you'll want to experience like there's no tomorrow.

The latest testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (<I>The Rock</I>, <I>Bad Boys</I>) continues Hollywood's millennium-fueled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid- fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving. Bay's protagonists--the eight crude, lewd, oversexed (but lovable, of course) oil drillers summoned to save the world from a Texas-sized meteor hurling toward the earth--are not flawless heroes, but common men with whom all can relate. In this huge Western-in-space soap opera, they're American cowboys turned astronauts. Sci-fi buffs will appreciate Bay's fetishizing of technology, even though it's apparent he doesn't understand it as anything more than flashing lights and shiny gadgets. Smartly, the duo also tries to lure the art-house crowd, raiding the local indie acting stable and populating the film with guys like Steve Buscemi, Billy Bob Thornton, Owen Wilson, and Michael Duncan, all adding needed touches of humor and charisma. When Bay applies his sledgehammer aesthetics to the action portions of the film, it's mindless fun; it's only when <I>Armageddon</I> tackles humanity that it becomes truly offensive. Not since <I>Mississippi Burning</I> have racial and cultural stereotypes been substituted for characters so blatantly--African Americans, Japanese, Chinese, Scottish, Samoans, Muslims, French ... if it's not white and American, Bay simplifies it. Or, make that white <I>male</I> America; the film features only three notable females--four if you count the meteor, who's constantly referred to as a "bitch that needs drillin'," but she's a hell of a lot more developed and unpredictable than the other women characters combined. Sure, Bay's film creates some tension and contains some visceral moments, but if he can't create any redeemable characters outside of those in space, what's the point of saving the planet? <I>--Dave McCoy</I>

5 out of 5 stars "We have 18 days before it hits Earth...".......2007-06-10

This action-packed, fast paced, movie has it all and it keeps your attention as well. People need to understand that Hollywood makes millions of dollars with this particular style of film, and who is to blame them. If something gives you a positive outcome, then it would be foolish not to attempt it again. I also understand that there are those movies that are on a category of their own and that break the boundaries of a typical Hollywood movie. But, Armaggedon serves its main purpose. It keeps you entertained and it has all the elements that make an action movie great. Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer are a lethal combination when it comes to this particular genre of movies, and I feel that is an honest compliment to admit that they are two of the best out there. Job well done!

I don't understand it when people say that this movie is not realistic, it never claims to be! It is a fun ride with with a great sound track and cast. I don't want this type of movie to be realistic, it would be too boring! This was the biggest hit of the year it was released for good reason......IT'S ENTERTAINING!!!!! That is what a movie should be! I watch a movie to escape and be swooped away from reality and that is what Armageddon does very well. If you can't just sit back and enjoy this movie with some popcorn and a soda than I feel sorry for you. Life is too short to not enjoy a great flick like Armageddon! I can't wait until it comes out in HD! Now go put the DVD in the player and hang on! :-)

1 out of 5 stars The perfect movie for stupid people!.......2007-05-30

Armageddon ranks up there with one of the absolute worst movies I've had the misfortune of seeing. It gives new meaning to the phrase 'over the top'. (Bigger is not better). Why is it that Hollywood insists on giving 99% of the attention to ridiculous special fx and 1% to the script/writing? Mega budget blockbusters like Armageddon are the most guilty of misappropriation of resources. Somebody please make Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer stop ...

    4 out of 5 stars Like a good friend.......2007-05-12

The music, how it is cut and taken - has a good feeling about it. One of those film I put on while I'm home doing something. And it keep's me company.

Okay folks, I am guessing you have seen this movie as it is quite a few years old now so I will not bother going into the details of it. If you wish to know more about the plot then check it out on imdb.

The big question is, how did it fare being transfered to HD-DVD? Well to sum it up I would say brilliantly. The video transfer is crisp and detailed, it does suffer a tad with film artifacts but this is the best we are ever going to see it that is for sure.

The audio transfer is absolutely superb.

You want HD-DVD? Well this is as good as it gets for this title.

Fine casting, genuinely <I>special</I> effects, and a keen combination of whimsy and danger make this <I>Peter Pan</I> the one to beat among all previous adaptations of J.M. Barrie's classic children's fantasy. The technical advances of CGI make the magic of Barrie's tale come alive, and the spectacular effects combined with luminous live action create an action-packed Neverland that's both believable and breathtakingly artificial, like a Maxfield Parrish landscape springing vividly to life before your eyes. More important, however, is the fact that director P.J. Hogan (whose splendid films include <I>Muriel's Wedding</I> and <I>My Best Friend's Wedding</I>) has taken care to develop a substantial, pre-adolescent affection between the boyish sprite Peter (Jeremy Sumpter) and resourceful London girl Wendy, played by Rachel Hurd-Wood in a marvelous screen debut. This emotional bond--and the mixed blessing of Peter's eternal childhood--is what gives Hogan's <I>Peter Pan</I> its rich emotional subtext, added to an already bountiful adventure that's equal parts delightful and menacing, especially when the villainous pirate Captain Hook (Jason Isaacs, doubling as Wendy's father) threatens to spoil the fun. With a mischievously dazzling Tinker Bell (played by <I>Swimming Pool</I>'s Ludivine Sagnier) and no expense spared on its lavish Australian production, this <I>Peter Pan</I> gets it entirely right by presenting childhood as fun <I>and</I> frightening, in all its wondrous joys and sorrows. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
