The first thing you need to know about <I>Sleepers</I> is that it's based on a novel by Lorenzo Carcaterra that was allegedly based on a true story. The movie repeats this bogus claim, which was attacked and determined by a wide majority to be misleading. Knowing this, <I>Sleepers</I> can be a problematic movie because it's too neat, too clean, too manipulative in terms of legal justice and dramatic impact to be truly convincing. And yet, with its stellar cast directed by Barry Levinson, the movie succeeds as gripping entertainment, and its tale of complex morality--despite a dubious emphasis on homophobic revenge--is sufficiently provocative. It's about four boys in New York's Hell's Kitchen district who are sent to reform school, where they must endure routine sexual assaults by the sadistic guards. Years after their release, the opportunity for revenge proves irresistible for two of the young men, who must then rely on the other pair of friends (Brad Pitt, Jason Patric), a loyal priest (Robert De Niro), and a shabby lawyer (Dustin Hoffman) to defend them in court. Despite the compelling ambiguities of the story, there's never any doubt about how we're supposed to feel, and the screenplay glosses over the story's most difficult moral dilemmas. And yet, <I>Sleepers</I> grabs your attention and pulls you into its intense story of friendship and the price of loyalty under extreme conditions. The movie's New York settings are vividly authentic, and Minnie Driver makes a strong impression as a long-time friend of the loyal group of guys. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>
Product Description
The judicial system is supposed to protect them. But when a youthful prank in New Yorks Hells Kitchen spins out of control, the punishment does not fit the crime. Sentenced to the Wilkinson School for Boys, four pals are mistreated at will by a cadre of sadistic guards. Now, 15 years later, they have an unexpected opportunity to use that system-for revenge. Friendship. Loyalty. Retribution. From its telltale opening lines to its stunning courtroom climax, Sleepers is spellbinding entertainment. With a vengeance.

WHAT A CRAZY TWIST!.......2007-03-26
I WASNT TOO SURE IF I WAS GOING TO LIKE THIS MOVIE BUT ITS A WONDERFUL MOVIE. THE STORY HAD A CRAZY TWIST AND I NEVER THOUGHT THAT THIS MOVIE WOULD BE THIS INTENSE. ITS GREAT I WOULD RECOMEND EVERYONE TO SEE IT, BUT THIS IS NOT A FAMILY MOVIE UNLESS THE CHILDREN ARE OLDER!
So many missteps.......2007-03-14
Man, with this cast you really could have blown the roof off the house. I mean, all the national treasures of acting are here -- except for Kevin Spacey, Tommy Lee Jones, Will Smith, Martin Lawrence, John Travolta, Tim Allen and Carlos Mencia.
The kids were really annoying, right? How many astonished close-ups of them were we gonna get? Get over it. Big deal, a prison guard did some bad things to you. They acted like it didn't happen to everyone.
Dustin Hoffman is a national gem. He get so into character that sometimes he forgets to get back into Dustin. At least, that's all I can think -- because I saw him in Manhattan and I kept yelling, "Hey Dustin, want to go get a hot cocoa and some Buggles (crunchy corn snacks)?" But he acted as if he didn't hear me -- must of been deep into his character, yes?
Sleeper.......2007-01-12
IT WAS A GOOD STORY, TOLD WITH A LOT OF CLASS, AND THE SAD THING ABOUT IT,...IT REALLY HAPPENS TO CHILDREN..
BRAD PITT ANT THE CAST WERE GREAT....B. KIPKER
A feel good movie........2007-01-12
This movie is depressing, dark and a real eye-opener. Good cast, and good court-room drama. A strong cast and solid performances make this movie a must watch.
Entertaining well made film about a difficult subject.......2006-11-28
This film deals with a topic that continually arises in our culture, the sexual molestation of children by adults in authority positions. In some ways the film compliments the more contemporary film "Mysterious Skin" which deals with a similar theme. I will first discuss an overall assessment of the film and then return to the theme of sexual molestation and the long path to recovery from sexual molestation.
As a dramatic engaging film, this product is very good. The acting of Robert DeNero, Kevin Bacon, Jason Patric, Minnie Driver, Billy Crudup, Brad Pitt, and Dustin Hoffman is super. DeNero is wonderful as the priest put in an ethical dilemna. Jason Patric holds the second half of the film together as the most psychologically sound of the victims. Kevin Bacon is creepy and realistic as the sadistic molester. Dustin Hoffman is a rare talent as he plays an incompetent alcoholic drug addicted second rate lawyer. Also note that the child actors were very good also. The plot is well developed and engaging, especially the division of the film into childhood and adulthood experiences. The Count of Monte Cristo by Dumas is also used as a unifying theme of imprisonment, escape, planned revenge, and redemption from pain. The cinematography was very good (notice the camera angels and techniques used on the city streets, the courtroom, and especially in the youth facility) and sound track (with serious almost tragic overtones) are first rate. Overall the film gets 5 out of 5 points.
The theme of sexual molestation of children by adults is a difficult and disturbing topic. In this film, 4 boys are molested, with two emerging as angry killers and two emerging with intact emotional stability. Brad Pitt plays the young lawyer who uses the court room to unearth the sexual crimes committed by several guards in the correctional facility. Jason Patric however plays the victim with the the strongest emotional stability and who is capable of developing loving relationships and moving forward with his life. Revenge was the theme that holds the second half of the film together, carefully plotted and executed by two of the victims, impulsively and self defeating by the other two.
A fine film worthy of your time.

This 1987 thriller was a predictable hit with the teen audience it worked overtime to attract. Like most of director Joel Schumacher's films, it's conspicuously designed to push the right marketing and demographic buttons, and granted, there's some pretty cool stuff going on here and there. Take Kiefer Sutherland, for instance. In <I>Stand by Me</I> he played a memorable bully, but here he goes one step further as a memorable bully <I>vampire</I> who leads a tribe of teenage vampires on their nocturnal spree of bloodsucking havoc. Jason Patric plays the new guy in town, who quickly attracts a lovely girlfriend (Jami Gertz), only to find that she might be recruiting him into the vampire fold. The movie gets sillier as it goes along, and resorts to a routine action-movie showdown, but it's a visual knockout (featuring great cinematography by Michael Chapman) and boasts a cast that's eminently able (pardon the pun) to sink their teeth into the best parts of an uneven screenplay. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

80's Classics .......2007-05-23
If this movie could be rated Higher I would. Its just that great era where movies were just good, I love this movie a whole lot, I believe this movie got me into the whole genre of Vampire Loving. And of course the actors in this movie for a child growing up in that era were also hot. The soundtrack to this movie is off the hook and its a great summer time CD. I highly recommend this movie. It truly is the best movie ever of its time.
Full screen & Widescreen included.......2007-05-12
The great thing about this dvd is on one side is the 'full screen' version , and the other side is the 'Widescreen' (2:35) version. Its cool when dvds come with both versions!!
Guilty Pleasure.......2007-04-29
Reading these reviews, it's clear that "The Lost Boys" has some irresistable magic going for it; I've loved it ever since I saw it in the theater when it came out. The '80's trappings are at least authentic, as the film was made in 1986 when the splashy colors of Corey Haim's shirts were actually chic (believe it, kiddies, I was there).
But what really makes it work, I think, is the care the writer (or writers) took to get the details of vampire mythology - the "hellhound", the importance of inviting the vampire into the home - right even as they re-shaped it to fit the contemporary setting. The twists all work, and the ending is just brilliant ("..all the damn vampires"). It's a solidly entertaining and engaging horror film, possibly deserving a place in a "top ten" of the genre.
One of the Best Vampires movie if not the BEST!!.......2007-04-16
First of all, im not going to get into the history of who's in it and who isn't. Second, this movie is a DEFINITE! for Vampires fan. Third, Keifer Sutherland at his best, although Coreys are lame together, in this movie they did work together as best as they could. Fourth, the Movie, the plot, the action, and the look of the vampires, are all Cool. This movie is a must *HAVE* especially the 2 Disc Edition. The Fifth reason is just that, the bonus CD is extremely what EVERY "COLLECTOR'S EDITON" should be. This is the a great movie and a great buy any place for the price!

Paying homage to both The Road Warrior and The Lost Boys, Solarbabies is set in a futuristic world where water is scarce, children are locked away in orphanages, and a glowing ball of frenetic energy has the power to make dreams a reality. Released theatrically in 1986, the film's cast includes a who's who of some of that decade's most popular young actors: Jami Gertz (Sixteen Candles, Less Than Zero) is alpha girl Terra; Jason Patric (The Lost Boys, Rush)) portrays hot teen Jason; and Lukas Haas (Witness, Alpha Dog) co-stars as young deaf Danny. Through plucky perseverance and a skillful knowledge of skateball (a roller version of hockey), the kids come up with a plan to save civilization from the corporate dictatorship that rations the free flow of water and also save themselves from their stifling lives in the orphanage. As Terra points out, "We must have parents somewhere." Some of the sets seem so inspired by the The Road Warrior films that you half expect Tina Turner to pop out, referring to them as Raggedy Children. Instead, we get bon mots (again from Terra) such as, "Get out, you creature of filth!" The film has a certain cheesy charm that may appeal to viewers in their mid-teens. While not an original film by any means, it does include suspense and a surprising amount of heart. --Jae-Ha Kim

Mixed Content Movie.......2007-05-07
As someone who has not seen this movie when it was first released, I can't say it gave me a nostalgic feeling when I saw it now. But, I can say that the movie has that innocent feel to it as do many movies in the past have. The technology and special effects may be outdated, but the sentiment of the movie remains. What we take for granted now (e.g. freedom, water, ecosystem, etc..) may one day cease to exist unless we learn to coexist peacefuly.
Racist Movie - Worst Black Stereotyping I Have Ever Seen.......2006-01-20
This movie was pretty awful. Since I am ranking it with 1 star, then according to another reviewer I must not have a soul. Hey, it doesn't feel bad!
This movie has the worst black stereotyping of any of movie I have ever seen, particularly in a sci-fi movie. It is worse than the blaxploitation films of the 70's, which were at least entertaining.
This movie is about a group of teenage white kids, with one token black thrown in just for the hell of it. "But just how 'black' is he?," you may be wondering. Well the movie makes it clear that he's a true soul man because it goes out of its way to establish these facts:
1. He talks different from the whites. ("Hey Bodee." "His name's Bodhi!" "Well you say it your way, and I'll say it mine." Or something to that effect.)
2. He breakdances. (And we all know that all black people can breakdance, can't they?)
3. He likes basketball. (Again, every white person knows that black people all like basketball and they are all good at it, right?)
4. He raps. (Because a person isn't truly black unless they can do a little hip-hop, can they?)
I'm a white guy. And I'm not overly sensitive to racism issues. But watching this movie really surprised me. I was amazed to see such a blatant black stereotype. I can't say that it's a good thing. It is quite embarassing to watch, actually. What where they thinking? This movie would never have been made that way in today's day and age.
The movie itself is pretty lame. It was made back in the roller-blading / cyberpunk craze of the 80's. It has the usual bleak dystopian future typical of those movies in those days. It also features a funky little ball named Bodhi. It is the weirdest, most nonsensical story I have ever watched. It is almost like a bad dream that somebody wrote down as soon as they woke up, which was later worked into a screenplay.
This movie is so stupid that it is painful to watch. The only good reason to see it is to see a few young actors such as Jason Patric (The Lost Boys) and Jami Gertz (The Lost Boys, Twister, Still Standing). It is also nice to see Richard Jordan (Logan's Run), as well as the stunning Sarah Douglas (Superman II, Conan the Destroyer) starring in a villainess roll, as usual.
Sarah Douglas really does make a good villain, too. It's too bad that her talent was so wasted in this crapfest of a movie. "Sphere of longiness"? Ech!
I don't understand all you people who are giving this movie 5 stars. I mean, what are you thinking? It has to be just the "I love the 80's" nostalgia-factor kicking in. I don't see any other rational reason for this phenomenon.
And please. Skating on an overgrown road? Skating in the dirt? They'd get about 10 feet before a rock stuck in their skates and they went flying. It might be fun to watch if you can make yourself believe that rollerblades work in the sand.
I'd have to say, that other dystopian future skating flick, "Prayer of the Rollerboys" is a much better movie than this. Of course that ain't saying much, because that movie pretty much stinks too.
Buy something else. ANYTHING else. If not for yourself, then at least to show the black people of the world a little basic human respect.
I love this movie!!!.......2005-10-18
First of all I was a kid in the 80's and love everything about the 80's. I am now 25 and still love everything and anything having t do with 80's. Now, with that being said...I love this movie. To this day I love this movie. As well as The Lost Boys, Gremlins, Space Camp, Ice Pirates, etc. If you love 80's movies and the music you will enjoy this movie. Im so glad to have found it again and recommend it to anyone.
Solarbabies.......2005-09-27
I was very happy with the speed in which I received the movie and the packaging it came in plus the quality of the movie.
I would not hesitate to use this supplier again.
It was....well you'd have to see it to believe me........2004-05-18
This movie was a lot of things. It was funny (not funny haha, but funny that's retarded), it was silly, and it was amusing. One of the things, however, it was not, was good. My personal favorite part was when the children were break dancing with the glowing orb. Now this is a movie with substance. To begin the tale to which this movie is about, is to well, dig deep into one's imagination. (Or a psycho's.) You see there is this orpanage with these kids and they live during the future when there is no water on the surface of the planet. However, I'm not really sure of all the facts because my brain tends to weed out the useless info. Anyways, they find an orb, dance with it and try to escape for some reason. (Again, info has vanished....) Anyways, they run into and indian tribe, small cities, some people that live underground, etc. What I'm trying to say, is that this is definately a B movie. So unless you want to watch a bad movie with friends to laugh at, don't bother. Lesson learned from Solarbabies: If you find a glowing orb, be nice to it. It could help you save the world and teach you to break dance.

Walter Hill's revisionist take on the American cavalry's campaign to capture renegade Chiricahua Apache warrior Geronimo (Wes Studi) is, like Clint Eastwood's <I>Unforgiven</I>, a dark tale that both celebrates and critiques myths of the American West. Despite its title, <I>Geronimo</I> is really about the American cavalry officers who undertake the responsibility of recapturing the warrior, in particular the young narrator Lt. Charles Gatewood (Jason Patric), a Civil War hero who respects the great Geronimo and brokers a treaty with the Chiricahua, only to see it collapse when the army kills the tribal medicine man. Gene Hackman plays Gen. George Crook, the proud but sympathetic officer charged with bringing in the renegades who take to hills after the killing. Robert Duvall, the tough, racist army scout and Indian fighter Charlie Sieber, practically steals the picture with his cagey, underplayed performance. More complex and complicated than most Westerns, this is a Walter Hill film through and through: lean, ironic, beautiful to look at (it was shot on location against the astounding landscape of southeastern Utah), and driven by a wonderful Ry Cooder score. Don't confuse this with the 1993 TNT cable film by the same name; it confounded many viewers at the time of its release and may have been at least partially responsible for its box-office disappointment. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>
Customer Reviews:
the true story.......2007-05-13
A very good historial movie. It has the Indians side of the story, which is refreshing to see. A great action movie that will hold your attention.
Goy-Ak-la An American Hero.......2007-04-27
Those who gave this movie low marks are neither as bright nor knowledgeable as they would have you believe. True - the movie was not historically accurate because it is a MOVIE. The public does not go to the theater to watch documentaries.
Who really knows the whole truth? If you desire more information about Geronimo, (Goy-Ak-la was his real name), I strongly suggest that you read the books; Geronimo, In His Own Words and The Truth About Geronimo, written by Bitton Davis. Davis was an Indian scout leader and knew most of the people highlighted in the MOVIE. He was not fond of Geronimo, but wrote a very interesting account of his attempts to capture the so-called renegade. The victors in any clash of cultures, all to often, write the history. My studies of Native Americans have convinced me that the original inhabitants of this country usually provide the most reliable accounts of these clashes.
About the movie: I agree with those who felt that the action scenes were well done and the scenery was breathtaking. The directing and acting was very good, especially Wes Studi and Robert Duvall. The movie, while it may not be historically accurate, gave the audience an insight into the issues and adventures of the main characters. This movie should be in the libraries of anyone who loves a good western or action movie, even those who appreciate a history lesson every now and then.
GERONIMO THE BARBARIAN MEETS DIRTY HARRY .......2007-04-09
A movie never comes from nowhere. John Milius, who wrote GERONIMO - AN AMERICAN LEGEND, had already written in 1993, among others, the screenplays of Dirty Harry, Jeremiah Johnson, Apocalypse Now and Conan the Barbarian, nothing less. He's one of the most influential authors of the American film production of the last thirty years. The John Milius hero is a rebel who tries to impose his own law or his own ideas on the society he has to cope with. Who else could have dared to glue the word legend with the figure of Geronimo, the Indian terrorist in essence ?
Now, the historical accuracy of the events described in Walter Hill's GERONIMO - AN AMERICAN LEGEND is not so important, Hill and Milius's purpose was not to present a documentary film about one of the last Indian rebellions than to make us think about the motives that actuated 50 Chiricahuas warriors to defy 5'000 U.S. cavalry soldiers. Everybody is entitled to have his own opinion about the events pictured in the Walter Hill movie but we should nonetheless take the time to think about certain issues raised by Geronimo (the movie character, of course) : Why does the White Man need so much space ? If the White Men hadn't been so many, would they have still had the right to claim the Indian territories ? These questions need to be asked and, let's hope so, there always will be a John Milius to irritate us with them.
A DVD zone guilty conscience.
Don't forget Tom Horn... Geronimo wouldn't have........2007-04-08
Geronimo was a renegade Chiricahua Apache warrior but not the tribal leader. He was in fact a war chief and medicine man with an uncanny ability to elude the US Cavalry. This movie might be made well but I'll never know because I won't watch any film so historically inaccurate. The cast includes all the major characters of this very real part of American history except the most important one other than Geronimo himself. Tom Horn. Trained by Al Sieber as a civilian scout and known as "Talking Boy" to the Chiricahua Apaches because he spoke their language better than any white man ever did, including Al Sieber whom he replaced as Chief Civilian Scout when Sieber retired. Tom Horn was the only man able to track Geronimo and twice talked the great Chiricahua Apache warrior into surrendering himself to the US Military authorities. I suggest that anyone interested in this part of American history should read Life of Tom Horn: Government Scout and Interpreter by Tom Horn. It's not great literature but it was written by the man himself. A man that Geronimo greatly respected and many white historians seem to want history to forget. Life of Tom Horn, Government Scout and Interpreter
Great Movie.......2007-04-01
I think this was a great movie telling a story of what happen to a great war chief Geronimo. I think what the government did to the indians was very bad. I wish they would make a sequel of what happen to Lt.Gatewood after he was transfered.

The director of <I>Waterworld</I> teams up with playwright William Mastrosimone for a story of a lost Russian tank during the Afghan war; doesn't sound like your normal action fare, does it? Despite its awkward origins, <I>The Beast</I> is a satisfying action yarn that unfortunately was never widely distributed. When Afghan rebels find the lone tank lost in the high desert, a cat-and-mouse chase commences with nail-biting, emotional precision. The Russian tank crew is also at war with themselves after the sympathetic driver (a stalwart Jason Patric) debates the brutal tactics of his commander (George Dzundza). This visceral action drama was adapted from--believe it or not--a stage play but keeps its feet firmly planted in the war-action genre. Director Kevin Reynolds's second film showcases his aggressive camera work that was featured later, less successfully, in <I>Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves</I>. Made directly after the Afghan war, the film was hard to sell in the late 1980s. With the Russians speaking English (and the Afghans their native dialect), the viewer is uncomfortably bonded to the unpopular aggressors. Yet the film reverberates in the sweat and toil of battle, with Patric bringing a more dramatic flair to the role than comes from the usual set of cinematic action heroes. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

War trumps idiology.......2007-06-04
War becomes the "BEAST" of the title, though the TANK is the vehicle that carries the action.
I am, however, looking for a Russian, or maybe Soviet, movie that, I think, if it exists, was the origional, much grittier, version of this film.
If you know of that film, which I think is called "TANK" (in English), please let me know where I can get a copy.

amazing story pathetically portryed what american force might have to deal with in 21st century.......2007-04-09
the tank in this movie symbolized the cruelty of the modern day war machine just look like a beast to the simple and poor people of the third world country. a beast is an evil force, the only way to deal with it is fighting back with persistent force, no matter how much sacrifice you have to make. i guess now there are two beasts in iraq, the insurgent force is a beast, the american force is another. so now the situation is beast against beast, both beasts are wounded, not fatally wounded yet but both are bleeding profusely. it depends on how much blood it got in each beast. it does not guarantee whether you got more fire power. what was proved several decades ago in vietnam, a poor beast beat the more powerful beast which finally decided that it couldn't stand the heat and just wanted to get out of the kitchen. now similar situation is replaying in iraq. the stronger beast already got 2nd thought and wanted to get out of the hot kitchen again, but still trying very hard to save some faces, refusing to set a timeline or deadline to let the world know when to drop out. beast or no beast, the best way to play tough is to stay put where you are, don't meddle with other beasts' business. ever heard the isau's fable: an elephant was scared to death simply by a tiny mouse? now you got it.
Authentic and a great depiction of occurances in the Afganistan war.......2007-03-26
I am going to keep this short and sweet I really Liked this movie and have watched it several times. I only have one complaint, I wish it were offered in Russion with subtitles. It appears to much like they are Americans, no accents.
Afghanistan.......2006-10-11
After a raid on an Afghan village, a Soviet T-62 tank gets lost from its battalion in a desert valley surrounded with mountains with a single way out, finds itself fighting a group of Afghan moujahiddin.
The movie rotates around the 5 members of the tank, the group of Afghan fighters and their women, and the way each conduct the fight; some to revenge their family killed in the village, some to steal the dead and the crew of the T-62 trying to stay alive.
The movie ranks among the best realistic war movies I have seen.
To name few:
1. Das Boot
2. We were soldiers.
3. Black hawk down
The best of the beast.......2006-08-02
A rare war theme-the Russians in Afghanistan. I've seen this movie more than 20 times and never tire of it. I even know the lines the dialogue word for word. And stop moaning about the young Russian rat pack acting like American beach boys ofcourse they would the Russian way they are also cocky and immature. Pretend that the conversations are in Russian which actually is not necessary even without words just the excellent score of MArk Isham this is a sure winner.

"It's an ugly world," warns brooding undercover cop Jason Patric to his naive rookie partner Jennifer Jason Leigh. "You get ugly with it." First-time director Lili Fini Zanuck brings both accomplished style and three-days-without-a-shower grit to this tough adaptation of Kim Wozencraft's book, the real-life story of two undercover narcotics agents who succumb to the rush of the drugs and the danger while building a case in rural Texas in 1974. This isn't an action film, but a harrowing, tense drama in which sudden death hangs over every drug deal and the so-called rules no longer exist. Patric and Leigh give riveting performances as the compromised cops trying to survive the self-destructive spiral into addiction, and Gregg Allman is memorable in an almost wordless performance as a shady bar owner. Eric Clapton's bluesy score and a soundtrack of well-chosen roadhouse tunes perfectly set the time and the tone. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

Classic Drug Movie.......2007-05-07
Rush is not your typical drug movie. This is a story of two undercover narcotic agents ( Jason Patric and Jennifer Jason Leigh) and how they are trying to catch a local kingpin in the act. They go deep undercover and actually start to become addicted themselves. Greg Allman's almost silent role is interesting to watch b/c he plays the part so perfect. Patric and Leigh believable portrayals are the key indgrediant to this film. Eric Clapton also supplies a heartwrenching score that touches every last blue nerve you have. Rush is worth a viewing!

You must see if you grew up in the late 70's & 80's. So realistic it is scary.
Rush Kept Me Going.......2006-06-07
Moment by moment this movie kept my attention lots of action, great story line and excellent acting. I started watching this late at night and thought I might doze off in it. Not a chance it was thrilling the whole way through.
Not as gripping as the book.......2005-03-06
This movie was nowhere near as entertaining as the novel it was based on: Smith County Justice by David Ellsworth. If you are lucky enough to find a copy of this "not in circulation" book, read it. It is a gripping reality check a/b Texas Justice. Thirty years later, Smith County in Tyler, Texas, isn't very different. God Bless TEXAS!!!!!!!!

Despite a troubled production history including a switch in directors, budget overruns, and delayed release dates, <I>The Alamo</I> turned out to be a remarkably intelligent mini-epic of corrective historical biography. Dispensing with the grandiose myth-making of previous films on this subject (including John Wayne's gung-ho 1960 version), this well-written film breathes new, credibly dimensional life into the stodgy legends of Davy Crockett (Billy Bob Thornton), Jim Bowie (Jason Patric), and Lt. Col. William Travis (Patrick Wilson), who fought with 185 Anglo-"Texican" settlers (some historians claim their numbers were closer to 250) during the bloody 13-day siege by 5,000 Mexican soldiers at the titular San Antonio mission-turned-fortress in 1836. While Gen. Sam Houston (Dennis Quaid) anguishes over military strategy and reluctantly withholds much-needed support, the Alamo defenders face the unbeatable multitudes commanded by Mexican Gen. Santa Anna (Emilio Echevarria), and the screenplay (on which John Sayles was an early contributor, when Ron Howard was slated to direct) allows the central heroes to reveal a richer, more substantial humanity beneath their mythic reputations. Tackling his biggest production to date, director John Lee Hancock (who previously worked with Quaid on <I>The Rookie</I>) reportedly shot 100 hours of footage, so it's almost miraculous that this 135-minute battle drama is so evenly balanced in telling its oft-told tale. Thornton was deservedly singled out for his fine performance, and Dean Semler's cinematography is Oscar-worthy throughout. Of course, any film about the Alamo necessarily includes speculative history, and this one's no exception, but it's got a ring of truth that previous versions conspicuously lacked. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Dennis!!!!!!.......2007-05-13
Anything Dennis Quaid will generally grab at least some of my attention. He is fun to look at and there were points in his career that totally plugged me in.
people have expectations.......2007-03-24
The actual events that led to the siege of the Alamo and the establishment of the short-lived country called Texas lie shrouded in the fog of contested legends. Like the Middle East today, two peoples necessarily tell the story of the same land in far different ways. It is often said by Texans today that Mexico is achieving through immigration and fecundity what Santa Ana could not.
Under such circumstances, there is room for a dramatic retelling of one side's story. THE ALAMO does that, and superbly. Jettisoning the attempt to see events from the Mexican point of view - it would have made for more textured history but a failed film - this movie simply tells the story of a heroic stand that many of its heros must have known was doomed from the start.
In the end, Mexican General Santa Ana's Napoleonic ambitions die in an eighteen-minute battle at a place of Sam Houston's choosing.
I work with leaders. Successful leaders usually have far more opportunity to draw on patience and fortitude than heroism. Yet in the heroism of this film *and* in Houston's patience, there are many lessons.
David (or was he Davey?) Crockett wearing his legend lightly. Houston refusing to be drawn in to battle when blood and anger were running hot. A young Lieutenant Coronel being told that 'sometimes it's just the *way* you say things' and discovering that stooping to burn his own hands on a hot cannon ball that someone else could have carried provided the elevation that had eluded him by command.
These are the film's enduring lessons. They can be told even when the history is sketchy, because somewhere, right now, some human being whose knees are shaking is becoming a hero in just this way.
A brilliant film, well shot, cunningly told, sincerely acted. Even Santa Ana would have admitted that much.
Spectacular.......2007-03-17
"The Alamo", I found, was a wonderful movie, even though it did have some historical errors. The acting was superb (to me Patrick Wilson stole the movie with his portrayal of William Barret Travis), and it kept me interested the whole time, so much so that after renting it, I bought a copy for myself from Amazon. Great movie!
Can there be any worse"Alamo"film than this one?.......2006-11-22
I doubt it...Even "The Last Command",a 1950s effort from Republic pictures, and starring Sterling Hayden(yes,Sterling Hayden, the corrupt police captain in the original"Godfather"film)is,overall, more entertaining than this revisionist twaddle..Hey!If you want"realism"(or political correctness)GO READ A BOOK !If you want history rather than entertainment, there's A&E,the History Channel and PBS...If you want a good story, robust performances, good music and award nominated film-making see the John Wyane version...
What is essentially wrong with this version is EVERYTHING...First of all it is revisionist political correctness taken to absurd lengths..Davey Crockett, played by Billy Bob Thornton(the only real reason to see this picture)is less than heroic but is portrayed instead as an opportunist ex-politician who has come to Texas thinking that the fighting is already over, and that he,as an ex-tennessee senator, might be able to renew his career in the new Texas republic..He is surprised that the fighting ISN'T over, and just the least bit annoyed that now he is in a position where his heroic manufactured image is in direct conflict with his real, opportunistic self..Jim Bowie is portrayed as a bigot, and Bill Travis is even more of an opportunist than ole Davey, and an adulterer to boot..Sam Houston ,likewise is not shown to be much more than an alcoholic who happens to be given command of an army that does nothing to help the defenders of the Alamo...
Claiming to give equal time to the other side in this conflict, the producers of this mess portray Santa Anna as a brutal tyrant, much like he has been portrayed in every previous"Alamo"film(indeed, the very BEST portrayal of the mexican general was by Raoul Julia in"13 DAYS TO GLORY",a made for teevee film, which was very well done, given the obvious budget restrictions..Julia's Santa Anna, while still a tyrant, was shown to be a much more complex individual than as portrayed in this film)...
Sure, the saga of the alamo,as history,is not written in strictly hero and villian terms, but the mission of our entertainment industry has been TO ENTERTAIN..teaching a strictly accurate rendering of any historical tale is not the same as providing entertainment,or,for that matter, providing charecters one can either root for or against..
This film wants to have it both ways...It wants to come across as a "great"american epic while at the same time attempting to straddle the fence of political correctness..Crockett,while certainly not the unabashed patriot of the John Wyane classic was also not the almost craven coward that one mexican after-battle account has him being...indeed,save for this one Mexican account, all other surviving firsthand accounts(most notably that of Mrs Dickinson)say that, like most of the other defenders,he fell in battle..This film ,determined to be in conflict with the facts, chose the account written by a mexican army officer(and which was as much a propaganda effort as any subsequent gringo account)to portray a crockett who surrendered and was executed by the victorious mexicans...
The final battle was, admittedly, fought just before dawn, but in terms of the cinema, such an epic scene filmed in near-total darkness(as it has been here)JUST DOES NOT WORK...a bunch of silhouetted figures running about, who are from time to time illuminated by weak light is not my idea of an exciting climax..add to this the god-awful dirge-like flapdoodle music, provided by Carter Burwell, and what you have is one really BAD scene, which is ironic, inasmuchas in every otheralamo film this last battle was the visual highlight...
The filmakers here extend thier storyline beyond the fall of the alamo(and the death of ALL of the main gringo players)and show us the Sam Houston victory over Santa Anna..But Randy Quaid's Houston is a marginal part of the movie, the battle scene is one-sided in the extreme, and the film ends, abruptly, with the defeat of the mexican army..Nothing heroic here either, with all of the mexicans appearing as cowards, and most of the americans looking like blood-thirsty louts...
This film is not entertainment..John Wyane's film is,even if it isn't historically accurate(and even if some of the dialouge is stilted)..What we have, instead,is revisionism that neither entertains nor informs..

Have move to Santa Calra where there is lots of vampires. Micheal thinks he i a vampire now.

Jittery camera moves and a gray-blue palette make it clear that <I>Narc</I> is a gritty police drama in the tradition of <I>The French Connection</I> and <I>Serpico</I>. Jason Patric (<I>Rush</I>, <I>Your Friends & Neighbors</I>) plays Nick Tellis, a former undercover cop with an accidental death on his conscience, which may be why he's agreed to partner with Henry Oak (Ray Liotta), a lieutenant determined to track down the killers of his former partner. This could all be rote, but the grit sticks: writer-director Joe Carnahan takes a huge leap forward from his Tarentino-wannabe first film, <I>Blood, Guts, Bullets & Octane</I>. The entire cast is excellent; Patric and Liotta give rich, textured performances that make their respective obsessions vivid and sad. <I>Narc</I> could use more of the dark humor that occasionally bursts out, but the movie's drive and energy make it more than a bleak tale of good intentions gone bad. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>
Description
NARC tells the story of suspended undercover narcotics officer, Nick Tellis (Patric), who is reluctantly drawn back onto the force to find the truth behind the murder of a young police officer killed in the line of duty. He is teamed with Henry Oak (Liotta), the slain officer's partner, a rogue cop who will stop at nothing to avenge his friend's death. As Tellis and Oak unravel the case, the dark underbelly of the narcotics world reveals itself in surprising ways that are more twisted than either officer has ever seen before -- and the mystery threatens to destroy them both.
Customer Reviews:
Awesome movie!.......2007-06-10
This movie is incredible. It is about a narcotics officer who is murdered, and the investigation that follows. The way it is shot is very gritty and raw. All around a great flick
One of the Best and Grittiest Crime Dramas in Years.......2007-01-10
Jason Patric and Ray Liotta pull out all the stops in this intense and action-packed, high end crime drama. Teaming up to find the killers of a fellow officer, these detectives move forward with voracious appetites for justice at any cost. But even then, not everything is what it seems leaving one detective to question the motives of the other. Do not miss this honest, bare-knuckled urban tale.
Joe Carnahan does an amazing job .......2006-12-04
To hell with Training Day, Copland, SWAT, or any other crappy (but more popular) cop movies. This one is brilliant.
The director(Joe Carnahan) takes a much different approach to filmmaking than I've seen. Here's what I mean-
Opening scene, theres a foot chase through the neighborhood. No steady-cam shot with perfect balancing, lighting, crisp images. The camera guy appears to be sprinting along with the chase. It is awkward, choppy, and off-center which really plays into the frantic mood of this scene. I loved it, very unique!
Another moment I remember, the two cops are investigating, asking people questions. It's filmed showing them both working with a full screen format, then goes to wide screen format, then dual split-screen, then finally a six screen depiction of the investigation. It looks so cool, big props to Joe C!
Another special thing about this movie is the casting. SO PERFECT. Jason Patrick and Ray Liotta couldn't have been replaced by anyone and even came close. Speaking of them two, you just won't see better acting performances than in this film. Seriously. Can you say Oscar snub?
The story itself moves with passion and rich detail, I love the intensity.
Finally, someone said they didn't like the ending. PPPuulleeeease!!! I won't give it away, but the ending is Awesome with a capital A. It will blow you away like a political intern. Don't rent this movie, Narc is a must own. The ultimate sleeper flick!
Narc.......2006-11-11
Narc is a great movie. I think the acting is played out VERY good, and the storyline keeps you interested until the end.
Ray Liotta stands out the most acting wise to me. Jason Patric falls right behind doing also a great job in acting. The story kept me interested, you want to know the next move theyre going to make. This movie is based around criminals and the drug underworld. Liotta and Patric team up to find out who was really behind everything that went on around Calvess.
I highly recommend this movie, its entertaining and keeps up the action. There are quite a few twists in the movie, more towards the end so pay attention so you can see whats really going on.
Overall, I give this movie about a 4.5/5. I thought the ending could have been a little different since I don't think it really led anywhere. But check this movie out you wont be dissapointed.
A Sleeper Film Makes Good.......2006-11-01
This is a case of an independent film making good. The story goes that Tom Cruise read it, fell in love with, and threw his considerable resources behind a small film and director from Sacramento, California that noone had ever heard of. This film makes Training Day seem like a children's story, and is a must see addition to fans of films like Reservoir Dogs, Pulp Fiction, and Boondock Saints. You're not a true film buff if you haven't seen this film.

Jason Patric stars as ace art forger Harry Donovan, eager to get out of the counterfeiting business and become a legitimate painter, but willing to take on one last, monumental job: creating a fake Rembrandt that will fool absolutely everyone. The promised money is good but the clients are creeps: gun-toting art dealers who ultimately set up Harry for a murder, forcing him to go on the run across Europe with an art expert (Irene Jacob) in tow. The film has a major obstacle in Donovan himself, an arrogant and unlikable jerk played with unappealing self-absorption by Patric. Worrying about this guy's fate is not an inviting prospect, but there are compensations in Jacob's smart performance and Rod Steiger's emotionally raw presence as Harry's mentor father. Director John Badham takes particular delight in penetrating the arcane world of forgery and in detailing Harry's working methods, from intense research to color selections to choices of tools and aging processes. Badham keeps us constantly curious and fascinated by this unholy marriage of expertise and deceit, and at least nominally interested in Harry's efforts to free himself of the criminal squandering of his talents. The crisp DVD image does justice to Badham's careful palette of colors, light, and European exotica, and special features include interviews with Jacob, Steiger, and Badham, plus trailers and a panel discussion involving Badham, writer Jordan Katz, and composer John Ottman. The DVD also includes English and Spanish audio tracks, and English, French, and Spanish subtitles. <I>--Tom Keogh</I>
Customer Reviews:
Alright thriller.......2006-07-08
Art forger Harry Donovan (Jason Patric) agrees to one last job before making dad happy by giving up the shamming and pursuing his own art. His last job's a lulu, too - paint a `lost' Rembrandt. Lost off the coast of Spain centuries ago with no surviving copies.
It's a solid enough premise around which to build a movie. Films about obsessive people tend to be interesting, and expert art forgers - Donovan is supposed to be one of the best - have to be obsessive. And it's easy to get swept up in films that pursue their own idiosyncratic obsessions. Creating the perfect forgery seems a natural. How does the crook outwit the experts? Where are the pitfalls on the trail to the perfect fake?
INCOGNITO cares about some of that stuff, but it cares about more, too much more, besides. To begin with there's a trio of unscrupulous art dealers Donovan has to deal with. They're here mainly to provide thriller fodder - they fund the `last job' and are show up at the end to betray the intense young artist. Then there's Prof. Marieke van den Broeck (Irène Jacob,) the beautiful art expert who `feels' one candidate isn't a real Rembrandt and more or less jets around Europe bumping into Donovan. Of course the pretty Prof. and Donovan tryst, fall in and out of love, get handcuffed together for an escape through Britain, and cement their bond during an extended, and unconvincing, movie-ending courtroom act. Some movies throw in a little bit of everything. Of course, with the gorgeous Jacob and GQ-coverboy Patric in the lead I guess crowding a bumpy love affair into an already overloaded movie ought to have been expected.
INCOGNITO isn't a bad movie, but it's not one you lean into, either. There's an awful lot of hokum going on - the bad-guy art dealers were forced, the events that led up to the trial strained at the credibility leash, and the trial itself was thin and unconvincing. A shaky three-stars for this one.
Made for TV quality.......2006-06-26
Saw 'Victory' and thought it would be fun to see Irene Jacob in something else. Read the reviews here and thought this sounded interesting. Not! Nothing is believable about this effort. We hated Jason Patric's character throughout and found the 'love affair' ridiculous, to say the least! This is a sad and embarrassing movie. To be avoided.
Executed with Ingenuity!.......2006-04-05
We have here an intriguing and cunning adventure in the world of art forgery. The action spans across Europe with American art forger Harry Donovan, aptly played by Jason Patric, commissioned by a less than savory group to "create" a lost masterpiece by the Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn. The beautiful Irene Jacob plays his love interest, Prof. Marieke van den Broeck. A perfect mix of suspense and intrigue with a more than satifactory ending.
As others have have provided storyline details, I will comment on this movies vibrant cinematography with sensual colors and brilliant lighting and a supurb musical score. The DVD is packed with bonus features that will satify everyone. I highly recommend the accompaning sountrack CD to complete a most enjoyable movie.
Great Flick!.......2005-09-24
I caught this on HBO and had to buy a copy for myself. Not a great movie perhaps, but it is a great "flick." It does have some nudity so those with small children should be forewarned.
If you are looking for a movie for grown-ups then you have found it. The reason that this film was a box office bust is because teenagers can't identify with any of the characters or themes. Adults will appreciate that each of the characters have conflicting desires and must operate in circumstances that they do not control. Even the humor is of the shaded variety.
I disagree with those reviewers who overanalyze it. This was not intended to be a "Casablanca", but then what is? What makes this movie work is that the audience can only guess at where the story will go next. Nothing is telegraphed.
Each character's focus seems to be the cause of their own defeats. Jason Patric's "Donovan" is the epitome of this. His greatest work of art is a forgery that is so good that when he needs to prove it is a forgery, he is dismissed as a liar.
Actually, as I think about it, this movie shares some elements with Casablanca. Danger, a love affair, the sense that the lead character is wasting his life...
But it is not that good. Just worth buying and watching!
Wonderful!.......2003-10-17
I've seen this movie many times & it is such an enjoyable ride that not once have I been tempted to over-analyze it, hunt for plot holes, flaws etc... & there are very few movies I can say that about. My list of all time favorites is a very short one - movies that somehow retain their magic and freshness through the years enough that I never tire of watching them & will always go out of my way (if necessary) to retain suspension of disbelief for & this is one of them.
