From a pregnancy scare and a psycho girlfriend to a cameo by Color Me Badd, <I>Beverly Hills 90210</I>'s sophomore year demonstrates why this was "the greatest TV show in history with a zip code in its title." That's what comedians John Aboud and Michael Colton (<I>Best Week Ever</I>) call it in a very entertaining bonus feature that affectionately roasts <I>90210</I> from its so-the-drama melodramatics to its stuck-in-the-'90s fashion sense (high-waisted jeans, buttoned-up shirts, and whatever the heck you call the outrageous wardrobe worn by Brian Austin Green's David). This is the season that catapulted <I>90210</I> from Most Likely to Succeed to BSOF (Best Show on Fox). Certainly, it was must-see viewing for teens who anxiously tuned in each week to vicariously chart the serial adventures of siblings Brenda (Shannon Doherty) and older brother Brandon (Jason Priestley), recent transplants from Minnesota to glitzy Beverly Hills. Season 2, one of the best in this series' decade-long run, is one for the time capsule, with episodes and story arcs that loom large in the <I>90210</I> phenomenon, among them: Brenda's tempestuous, on-and-off-again relationship with soulful bad boy Dylan (Luke Perry in his instantly iconic role), causing rifts between her and her increasingly disapproving parents; new girl Emily Valentine (Christine Elise) going all <I>Fatal Attraction</I> on Brandon (no rabbits are boiled but a homecoming float is in jeopardy); Kelly (Jennie Garth</I>hooking up with <I>Melrose Place</I>-bound Jake (Grant Show), and Donna (Tori Spelling) in her mermaid Halloween costume.

<I>Degrassi Jr. High</I> has nothing on <I>90210</I> when it comes to issues-oriented episodes. Not four minutes into the season opener, Brenda announces she is five days "late." "I love Dylan, and I thought I knew what we were doing" she tells BFFs Kelly and Donna, "but I'm beginning to get the feeling that it wasn't worth it." Other episodes address abstinence, child abuse, the physically challenged, sexual orientation, racism, rape, and steroids. A heartbreaking story arc concerns David shunning his former best friend, Scott, who returns from an Oklahoma vacation all urban cowboy, making him even more of an outcast with the popular kids. "Cool it with the guns," David cautions, foreshadowing tragic events to come in the episode "The Next 50 Years." Throwing something of a wet blanket on precious memories of the show is the substitution of generic songs for <I>90210</I>'s originally killer soundtracks of alternative and classic rock and golden oldies. One would think that the Peach Pit has the lamest jukebox on Earth. <I>--Donald Liebenson</I>

Product Description

One of the definitive, landmark shows of the 1990s, 90210 quickly became an important fixture on the FOX and in the popular discourse of adolescents and young adults. The second season's main characters, Dylan, Kelly, Donna, Steve, David, Andrea and twins Brandon and Brenda all attended West Beverly Hills High School. Brandon and Brenda Walsh and their parents, transplants from Minneapolis were the stable nuclear family with strong values; their home was a safe haven for the whole gang and the center of much of the drama. The show dealt with a steady stream of love triangles and other romantic entanglements and occasionally touched on more serious issues as well.

Beverly Hill 90210 is as much fun now as it was back when it came out! It's funny to see on this season how the microphone pops into the top view of the screen in a lot of the episodes, but it doesnt ruin the show. Quality product, can't wait for season 3!!

5 out of 5 stars I love 90210!!!.......2007-06-02

I have season 1 and was glad when season 2 was coming out. I love to watch 90210 over and over again. They should have come out with the series on DVD a long time ago. For some reason the DVD's are a bit grainy, not up to DVD quality, but I see past that and keep on watching them.

This Western has become a modest cult favorite since its release in 1993, when the film was met with mixed reviews but the performances of Kurt Russell (as Wyatt Earp) and especially Val Kilmer, for his memorably eccentric performance as the dying gunslinger Doc Holliday, garnered high praise. The movie opens with Wyatt Earp trying to put his violent past behind him, living happily in Tombstone with his brothers and the woman (Dana Delany) who puts his soul at ease. But a murderous gang called the Cowboys has burst on the scene, and Earp can't keep his gun belt off any longer. The plot sounds routine, and in many ways it is, but Western buffs won't mind a bit thanks to a fine cast and some well-handled action on the part of Rambo director George P. Cosmatos, who has yet to make a better film than this. --Jeff Shannon

Tombstone is one of my favorite movies!!! I thought it was about time I bought the DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Tombstone is tops.......2007-06-11

This movie is very close to the actual circumstances of the OK Corral. Kurt Russell, Val Kilmer, Sam Elliot (who is so perfect in westerns it makes you wonder if he was time shifted from 1880!!), and Bill Paxton are great! Then you see some of the actors from classic western movies and TV back as older men. Another one that we have memorized the lines to and still have to watch it each time it is on the satellite!! If you've never seen it....buy it, pop some popcorn, pour some butter on it and turn on the home theater!!

5 out of 5 stars Tombstone review.......2007-06-08

Excellent movie. Hard to beat if you are a true western fan. Amazon service is great!

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal.......2007-06-05

This movie is absolutely awesome. Sure, that sounds like a young awe struck boy in its description of the film, but that is what it reduced me to. Some of the best one-liners of all-time, and a great chemistry between the always solid Kurt Russell and Val Kilmer. Kilmer is at his best as the Consumption addled (read TB) Doc Holliday. This is a novie that I have never heard a bad thing about, even though the discussions almost always involve guys. Really a fun and well-made film. One of the few movies that I can watch time and time again. A 5 star classic. Enjoy!!!

5 out of 5 stars A gorgeous example of western nobility and honor..........2007-05-24

"Tombstone" is a classic American film of honor and nobility. In a time when villains openly used force, true heroes stood up to these men not because they were tough guys, but because they knew they were right. It provides a fine example of how cowards and bullies rely on fear and intimidation to gain their power, and how one needs only be strong to stand up to them.

Kurt Russell plays one of the most conflicted, yet noble characters with gravitas and strength. Val Kilmer as "Doc Holliday" steals the show as the southern gentleman with an unfortunate affliction and deadly vices. The Villains, led by Powers Booth as Curly Bill, are fantastic and able acting foils to the protagonists. The entire cast is strong and the script is outstanding.

This movie should be a standard for every young man on the nobility in honor, the value of intelligence and education, and the merits of being a gentleman.

Just as Fox's 21 Jump Street injected the cop drama with a dose of hip, Beverly Hills 90210 infused the primetime soap with youthful energy. Like Aaron Spelling's Dynasty, most characters don't lack for disposable income, except for middle-class twins Brandon <table align=left cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0" > <tr><td align="center"> <img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/features/darrenstar-sm.jpg" border=0 align=top> <span class="sans"><font size=1>

Created by Darren Star (Melrose Place), the class-conscious concept scored an instant hit. In the two-part Tim Hunter-directed pilot, the teens have just arrived from Minneapolis. "Nobody knows me," Brenda tells Brandon on their first day at West Beverly High. "I can be anyone I want." The two soon befriend Steve (Ian Ziering), Kelly (Jennie Garth), Donna (Spelling's daughter, Tori), David (Brian Austin Green), and commuter student Andrea (Gabriel Carteris). Then there's Dylan (Luke Perry), who debuts in the second episode ("The Green Room"). A poetry-reading surfer with a shady past, he's the James Dean of the piece, and Brenda falls hard for his bad-boy charms. Guests include Debbie Gibson ("East Side Story") and Matthew Perry ("April is the Cruelest Month"), while recurring characters include understanding parents Cindy (Carol Potter) and Jim Walsh (James Eckhouse) and Peach Pit manager Nat (Joe E. Tata).

Beverly Hills, 90210 ran for 10 years. Though it would move away from issue-oriented episodes in the seasons to come--in the first, it takes on shoplifting, cheating, and date rape--without it, there would be no O.C., no Veronica Mars, etc. Just like the 1980s films of John Hughes (The Breakfast Club), it set the standard to which all others must be compared. As nice as it is to have the show on DVD, it should be noted that not all musical selections made the cut, i.e. "Music has been changed for this home entertainment version." Otherwise, this guilty pleasure remains as pleasurable as ever. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

4 out of 5 stars It is Great.......2007-06-23

I am just so ecstatic about this show! I own the Complete First Season and the Second Season DVD's. I love watching them and can't wait for the rest to come out. My favorite episode is "The Gentle Art of Listening", where Brenda and Andrea try to help find the identity of a rape victim after getting a frantic call at their teen emergency hot-line. I like how it isn't a stupid, cheesy soap opera, it was a very interesting teen drama. The Second Season was definitely a bit of a downfall, but still pretty interesting. Can't wait for the rest!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Show Ever!!!!!.......2007-06-12

I saw one episode of this show on SoapNet and instanting became addicted. I started watching it in like the eighth seanson so I was a little hesitant to buy season one but when I got it I realized that it was even better. Even though I've never watched it until now, it's my new favorite show hands down!

5 out of 5 stars love the 90210 cheese!.......2007-05-11

as everyone says, finally! now you can own every episode and watch it secretly at home every night when no one is looking. it's pure 90's cheese, it will make you laugh out loud (was it THIS funny back in 1991?), it will make you gag sometimes. but it will always be pure, unadultered 90210 fun. i plan to own each season that comes out on dvd. i've had so much fun with these dvd sets (season 1 & 2). and of course i give it 5 stars, you get exactly what you expect. :)

Director Joe (The Howling, Gremlins) Dante helmed one of the more daring episodes of Masters of Horror to date--Homecoming-- and his second go-round for the cable anthology series is another thought-provoking chiller with real-world overtones. Here, Dante and screenwriter Sam Hamm (who also penned Homecoming) adapt James Tiptree, Jr.'s 1977 noted short story of the same name and concoct an alarming nightmare scenario in which men are suddenly and brutally attacking women when sexually aroused. The solution to this sudden wave of violence falls to scientists Jason Priestley and Elliott Gould, but the situation rapids erupts into a global epidemic, and Priestley's wife (Kerry Norton) must fend for herself and their daughter in a world that wants her dead at all costs. Dante and his capable deliver the terror with a straight face, and if Hamm's script strays too often into tangents about environmental responsibility, the abundance of suspense and outright violence offers a balance to genre fans that are less interested in social issues. The DVD includes commentary by Dante and Hamm, featurettes on the episode's production and special effects (by KNB), and the shooting script in DVD-ROM format. --Paul Gaita

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A LITTLE BIT SCREWY.......2007-06-14

This entry in the compelling MOH series is a little strange, mixing social commentary with a small dose of horror. The world is suddenly going mad, at least its male population...sexual arousal is leading men to murder the woman responsible...and soon it's just men murdering women. Two scientists offer a solution, as evidenced by the control of the dangerous screwfly population. But no one listens, and of course disaster ensues.
Director Joe Dante doesn't do anything compellingly different, and the acting by Jason Priestley and Elliott Gould is merely adequate. Not a sterling entry in this otherwise good series.

5 out of 5 stars Pest Control-and Man is the Pest.......2007-06-06

I expected this to be good because I know that Joe Dante is an excellent director, but when I saw that it was based on a story by James Tiptree Jr., I sat up, because I knew this was going to be something REALLY extraordianary.

James Tiptree Jr. is one of the greatest science fiction writers of the latter part of the 20th Century. James Tiptree Jr. was also the nom de plume of Dr. Alice Sheldon (look for Tiptree's books on Amazon). Her writing was always psychologically complex and surprising. And this installment of MASTERS OF HORROR captured that, thanks to Dante's brilliance and Sam Hamm's great script.

It's made clear from the beginning that there is a parallel between our decimation of the screwfly/pest insect populations by disruption of their sexual cycles, and what is occuring to the human population in this story (at least it's clear to us, the audience). So this naturally begs the question: If we did that to the insects, who or what could be doing this to us?

The conclusion of this story is set up right from the beginning, is deepend, enhanced, and made more apparent throughout the telling of it. There is no cheap ending here. It is logical, inevitable, and horrible. Horrible for humans, anyway.

The dogs seem to like it.

It's important to keep in mind that this isn't a chainsaw hack-'em-up-er, or blood drinking beast fest, or a vengeful ghost mind twister. This is a story about the most terrifying monsters in the world: ordinary people who give in to the worst within themselves, thinking they're right, and good, and normal. Men who don't see other people (women) as human. And you have to pay attention.

Personally, this is my favorite episode so far in the series.

4 out of 5 stars Chances are this Flick won't make it to "Lifetime: Television for Women" .......2007-06-04

In the 1950's 2 American Entomologists (Dr. Raymond Bushland & Dr. Edward Knipling) developed the "sterile insect technique",
to control the population of the screwworm fly. In this technique the male screwworm flies were exposed to radiation, thus rendering them sterile. They were then returned back to the wild, to mate with other wild female screwworm flies. The result was a reduction in the amount of eggs being laid inside American crops.
Now someone or something is applying the same technique to mankind.
A new form of sterilization, characterized by sexually driven bloodlusts.
At first it appears to be a few random mysoginistic slayings.
But as the numbers grow, so does the concern.
With the possibility of an epidemic, whole areas are soon quarantined.
No women are allowed in for they're own safety.
They're being forced to stay away, because women of all ages are being wiped out by men who seem to believe that what they're doing in natural & rational.
In countries around the world it's occuring on such a massive scale, that whole rivers are being damned by the steady influx of bodies.
But who is causing this, and why?

I watched this episode with my wife, which almost never happens as a result of her being female, and hating horror movies.
So, after an unnatural amount of coaxing, I finally got her to sit down and watch one with me.
And of course, it was an apocalyptic horror movie concerning the erradication of women.
Suffice it to say, she will never be watching another horror movie with me, for as long as we both shall live.
Obviously, this movie had a much greater impact on her than it did on me.
And rightfully so,
I'm not a woman, who in most countries (and maybe even in this one),
have to live in fear of men every day.
(Hell, in Japan, groping is so bad, women have their own subway cars.)
(And let's not even get started on the Middle East)
This flick is the cinematic embodiment of every woman's fear.
Namely, Men.

With all that being said,
this film deserved more time to explore it's subject,
a bigger budget to employ more extras & horrific scenes,
and a much better ending that doesn't blow the whole premise.
(Nothing ruins a good horror movie more than a really cheap twist ending.)
All in all this was an enjoyable film, that could have been memorable, had it been alotted the time to go the extra mile.
As a result, the films story suffered, often taking huge leaps in time, giving it an incomplete feeling.
But if you really wind up liking it, I have a suggestion.
A better, modern example of "gendercide" is depicted in Brian K. Vaughn's monthly comic series, "Y: The Last Man". Pick up the trade-paper-backs, you will absolutely not be disappointed.

In closing,
If you're a horror-buff you'll enjoy this movie for what it is,
But do yourself a favor and don't watch it with your female,
She won't look at you the same way, for like a week.

MORAL OF THE STORY:
A world without women
is not a post-apocalyptic world I would want to live in.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Premise And Intelligent Plotting Bring New Life To The End Of The World.......2007-04-18

Joe Dante's "Homecoming" for Showtime's "Masters of Horror" anthology series was easily the controversial high point of Season One. Alternately described as "brilliant" and "complete trash," there were very few who straddled the middle on this political zombie satire. Needless to say, this intrigued me to contemplate how Dante would follow up this divisive little tale. Well, for Season Two, Dante clocks in with "The Screwfly Solution." It certainly has a provocative topic, and is the ultimate battle of the sexes--but I suspect that it is a lot less likely to engender the passionate debate of "Homecoming." That is not a criticism, however, as I think this episode stands as one of the more sophisticated entries we've seen so far!

Contemplating the end of the world, "Screwfly" offers a new take on the apocalypse genre. A virus affecting men is discovered where if the man is to become sexually aroused--his feelings end up turning to a murderous rage. Needless to say, this doesn't bode well for the women of the world--as this rage is directed at them! While this may, on the surface, seem to be a bit (or a lot) misogynistic--the disease is handled well and its repercussions are real, unpleasant and not taken lightly. The principles include Jason Priestly and Elliott Gould as researchers trying to combat the virus, but this just may take the ultimate toll on their families.

"Screwfly" may not be scary in the traditional sense if you're looking for quick thrills, but the premise is chilling and disturbing and it leads to appropriate gruesomeness. The tale is well acted and sometimes harrowing, with an emotional context I haven't found often in the "Masters of Horror" series. In fact, through most of the film, I thought I might be scoring this episode at 5 stars--that's how pleasantly surprised I was by this tale. The end scenes, however, may be a bit prolonged for some viewers. That didn't bother me as it brought the real domestic dilemma of this story to the forefront. But, at the last minute, the film provides us with an unnecessary explanation for the whole catastrophe which was both unnecessary and not worthy of what has preceded it. This terrific tale went wrong in the end, but that doesn't keep it from being one of the best this show had to offer! KGHarris, 04/07.

Description

George P. Cosmatos presents the Director's Cut of his incredibly popular TOMBSTONE, the action-packed, star-studded western that brings the legendary feud between the Earps and the Clantons to life. Former U.S. Marshall Wyatt Earp's (Kurt Russell) plan for peace, quiet, and prosperity misfires when he, his brothers, and the outrageous rogue Doc Holliday (Val Kilmer) encounter that ruthless band of outlaws, the Clantons. Gripping performances and explosive action fill the screen in this legendary western about Tombstone and the gunfight at the O.K. Corral.

Viggo Mortensen stars as Jimmy Kowalski, a Desert Storm veteran with racing in his blood, dark secrets in his past, a pregnant wife at home, and a vintage 1970 Dodge Hemi Challenger to deliver. But when his wife is suddenly hospitalized, a desperate Kowalski speeds cross-country with police from four states, a vengeful trooper [Steve Railsback of HELTER SKELTER and ED GEIN], and the FBI in hot pursuit. Now with the help of an outspoken radio DJ [Jason Priestley], the man a nation hails as `the last American hero' and the Feds label a `possible terrorist' rockets toward a final roadblock where the speed limit is the floorboard, and life, death and freedom all come together at the VANISHING POINT. Christine Elise [ER], Keith David [ARMAGEDDON] and Peta Wilson [LA FEMME NIKITA] co-star in this explosive Fox-TV remake of the legendary cult classic that fans call `the ultimate car chase movie'!

Great movie but couldn't figure out what happened to Viggo at the end. Did he die or live?

5 out of 5 stars IT'S AWFUL, SO WHAT!.......2007-04-05

It has plenty of Mopar action in it. I could care less about the two goober stars of this, Viggo & Priestly, and i'm sure i'm not alone. I will buy this for 2 reasons; the Mopars and to a lesser extent, it has Steve Railsback(his groundbreaking role of Charles Manson in the original Helter Skelter from 1976). If it's possible for a newer movie to achieve cult status, this will be it. You'll be seeing these used on Amazon for $100 when production ceases. Pick it up NOW!

1 out of 5 stars Aarrrrgghh! Vanished Point!.......2007-02-27

I saw this on TV when it came out. I'm sure it was a made-for-TV movie, and it should have stopped there. I remember looking forward to seeing it, then was totally bummed out. I wasn't expecting it to be as good as the original, but geeze, it shouldn't be allowed to have the same name or main character. Totally different plot, totally corny. Was this made to be a chick flick? Someone mentioned what's his names blue eye's, and the woman in peril. If I remember he has to drive through Utah to Idaho and plays chicken with the cops. No cop is going to play chicken! Why doesn't he buy a freakin' plane ticket? Instead he tries to kill himself so his wife has nobody. Arrggh!

5 out of 5 stars Haa - THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TWO.......2006-07-19

All the guys miss the nude shots of the first movie - the chase was excellent, the desert scene was disgusting.

Yeah, this movie version is definitely made for the ladies. Did you ever see such gorgeous blue eyes? They enhance the soul of the part Viggo plays. [Same with Hidalgo].

I love the souped up Hemi's - the muscle cars - but believe it, it takes a man to make the car.

And the gal who plays his wife has a certain beauty about her.
Believe me gals this is definitely a movie for the discerning female. Ignore any comments made by you know whos.

Enjoy the gorgeous scenery, the speed, the swerves, the nasty David Keith, the Indian Reservation part, the Spirit, the Ending, the speculation.

Much more to my likeing than the original movie with its dark side.

HIGHLY RECOMMENDED - One definitely to watch over again.

1 out of 5 stars I haven't even seen it and I hate it already!.......2006-06-01

I just watched the original Vanishing Point again after having bought the DVD a few years ago. I remember this flick from the mid-to-late 70's when I was a kid and too young to really get it.

Now it makes a lot of sense, after having lived another 30 years myself. And then there's the downright unexplainable, but still cool... take the mystic link between Super Soul and Kowalski! Somehow he knows when Kowalski is listening. Something about his blindness gives him a kind of "second sight". Freaky, but it works somehow.

To think that they could completely jack with that original concept!! There will never be another time like the early 70's. That great classic should just be allowed to rest unmolested.

I like the chick below who rated it one star simply because they sent her the wrong format. She, too, hasn't seen it, but she realizes it deserves only one star! I wish I could give it zero stars! :-D

Saddened by the untimely death of their father and husband, a family moves to a new town and confronts the usual--bullies, demanding new job--and the unusual: an autistic neighbor boy who believes he can fly. Bonnie Bedelia is the stressed-out mom, and Bedelia-look-alike Lucy Deakins plays the perceptive daughter who braves ridicule to reach out to the boy under the tutelage of wise teacher Colleen Dewhurst. This earnest film's melancholy is tempered by its fantastical ending and the fun of seeing a pre-<I>Wonder Years</I> Fred Savage as the soldier-obsessed little brother, not to mention one of the future denizens of <I>Beverly Hills 90210</I> (Jason Priestley). Parents may wax nostalgic over early '80s fashions and may take delight in appearances by Mr. Munster (Fred Gwynne) as an alcoholic with self-knowledge, <I>Facts of Life</I> gal Mindy Cohn as a chatty neighbor, and Louise Fletcher playing a kindly psychologist. Slow pacing and heavy dollops of tragedy make this most appropriate for ages 8 and up. <I>--Kimberly Heinrichs</I>

Some argue that this film takes a wrong turn at the end, but then I guess that depends on your own personal outlook on life. In my opinion, this film is pure perfection from the first frame until the last. Truly a classic from the 80's and for all time.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies from the 80s........2007-03-02

The 80s had a lot of great movies from a variety of genres. And with the bevy of great teen flicks, it's easy to forget or overloook a few gems, especially if you didn't catch them during their first runs at the theater or on TV. "The Boy Who Could Fly" is one of those kind of movies. It didn't get the kind of attention, publicity or promotion that, say, the John Hughes-Brat Pack teen flicks did. But box office aside, this movie didn't need it. It stands on its own feet. Though this movie didn't star what could be considered any big names at the time, a lot of great performances by "soon to bees" give this movie a true heart. Since this movie isn't saturated with dialogue or contain a steady pace of action, the heartwarming story is accomplished through fine direction that gets outstanding performances from the entire cast: the adorable and accomplished Lucy Deakins, a very young Fred Savage, Bonnie Bedelia (pre-"Die-Hard"), Mindy Cohn ("Facts of Life"), Colleen Dewhurst, Fred Gwynne (whom directors in the 80s finally realized could act without his Herman Munster costume), and a cameo by effectively typecast Louise Fletcher. It's a great mix of young actors and experienced veterans who create an inspiring, touching story that provides encouraging lessons with such subtlety, you wonder where that lump in your throat came from by the movie's end. I always wanted to see more of Deakins and was disappointed she made so few movies. But I was more impressed to see what she'd done with herself around her movie career. With such a background it's easy to see why her performance as Milly seemed so effortless. The scent of the 80s is evident in this movie in a few ways (the least being the cast itself) which makes it even more "comfort food" for those of us who first saw it back then.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Keep Going, Your Almost There.......2006-12-05

National Lampoons has always had the ability to put out mixed films. Some are good stupid and some are too stupid to even sit through like their genius movie Adam and Eve, which I turned off after 10 minutes. Here comes Going the distance which actually has some notable moments but most of them I can't write on Amazon. Going the Distance is about a teen named Nick who looks more like a 29 year old. Nick just got a special gift from his girlfriend on the night before she goes off to Toronto to intern for a slimy record executive who likes to take advantage of young interns. His girl doesn't tell him until the next day and Nick has no choice but to let her go.

A few hours later Nick decides to fly to Toronto and ask her to marry him but not before his friends and parents (who absolutely hate his girlfriend) force nick to have a few going away drinks. Somehow Nick's mom slips him something to make him pass out and when Nick wakes up he is in his trailer and his friends surprise him by taking a road trip to Toronto. This movie is actually enjoyable but it could be way better if they picked a couple of better actors. Christopher Jacot playing the lead character Nick doesn't really fit him. I actually would have liked to seen Ryan Reynolds play Nick but he probably had better things to do. Chris was a dry actor for a National Lampoon film and he drops the films worth. The supporting characters were ok but you can feel the need for one more crazy character to boost the movies excitement. There wasn't enough funny stuff going on in this movie, just a little here and a little there. Going the distance is worth seeing if you have nothing else to do and nothing else to watch and you'll definitely get a few laughs, especially on the farmer's table scene.

4 out of 5 stars I really liked it.......2006-07-22

Well, I for one really liked this movie. It is like a canadian version of Road Trip, and the characters are pretty cliche, especially tyler, but other than that I really liked it! Lots of good scenery and good laughs. I really think you should buy this movie

2 out of 5 stars Please enter a title for your review.......2006-01-20

This is as bad as Out Cold. I think most viewers, even if they just want dumb fun, will find this movie insulting to their intelligence. I guess maybe it's just a movie to watch while drinking with friends. Your brain would have to be completely turned off to be entertained by it. It's template derived, an endless string of cliches. The kind of script that draws inspiration from other movies rather than from real life or a creative imagination. The basic plot outline of a guy making an emergency trip across the country to save his relationship, while falling for another girl in the process, is ripped off of Road Trip who ripped it off of Overnight Delivery. Only in this movie instead of the other girl being wilder and broadening the guy's horizons she's more conservative, I guess a testament to the conservative mentality behind this film. The added bit of having to save the girlfriend from a sleazy record executive type = Wayne's World. The picking up girls who subject the unwitting guy to violent bondage = Tomcats. The popsickle scene was the only remotely clever part. If it was just the girl licking the popsickle seductively to tease the boy it would be really dumb, but because the guy was doing it too it had a certain inane random charm to it that I liked.
It's pretty tragic to think that hundreds of people spent months working on this. The only real problem is the script. It's a professional looking movie as far as the actors and cameras go, but it's all wasted effort because of the weak script. It's like building a mansion on a sinkhole.

1 out of 5 stars The only good thing about it is the girl on the cover. Nothing else........2005-12-07

The National Lampoon movies used to be a respected name in comedy. When Chevy Chase still knew how to be funny and have a career, he made a good name for himself in some of the classics in the Vacation series. Then, not much happened with National Lampoon for a while. Van Wilder came out and floored most audiences. While I didn't care for it too much, you can't deny Ryan Reynolds' presence in it. But then it happened: countless direct to video/dvd releases flooded the market, and left most viewers wondering what the hell happened. Shoddy sequels to some of the better known installments, yet more about college, and a few road trip ones, it all got tiring fast. And for some reason, I had a glimmer of hope in Going the Distance. It looked the least irritating (read- it didn't look like it was going to try hard to be "edgy"), and had the most decent looking cover girl for the series this year. When I popped in the disc though, I felt like I was in generic comedy city. Everything was predictable, the characters weren't anything new, the situation was ridiculous, and there was no point in watching it through to the end. I actually had to watch this one in 4 installments before finishing it. It was that mediocre.

Because the back of the box fails to give any plot details, I'll have to actually sound like I was interested enough to follow what little plot there was. The movie follows three high school grads. There's the main character who has the best intentions (Guy A), the brawny jock that just wants to get laid (Guy B/Stiffler X), and the typical stoner who tries to give a few laughs (Guy C). Guy A ended high school with his loyal girlfriend, and they were each others' first time. But once college starts up, she wants more in life, and goes for an internship from some shady business executive she met at a party. She says she'll try to be faithful to Guy A, and leaves. But he doesn't take this too well since she was his first time and everyone's like that for some stupid reason, and makes plans to travel and propose to her. Guy B and C know he's making a mistake, and take him on a road trip one day after they all get stoned. He freaks out once more, and demands they all go to see his now former girlfriend. On the way, they pick up two girls that are trying to make a name for themselves in the music industry. Fortunately, they don't want to be pop singers, and are more hippy than bubble gum. Meanwhile, Guy A's parents hire a hit man to make sure he doesn't propose to his ex, because they know she's not good for him, and want him to make a better decision. Hilarity attempts to ensue.

There's more good than bad with this movie. The group constantly loses their mode of transportation to some abnormal circumstance, and then gets an even stranger way to travel. All the jokes are simple, and rely on small bits of "gross" humor. And most of it is pretty tame, so don't come in expecting something like the American Pie gross-out humor that Stiffler had to endure. The characters are so simple, that all of their dialogue is just there so we remember that they're in the movie. Most of the lines come from Guy B, and most of it is just him going on about how he wants to score. Guy A only whines about his problems, Guy C barely does anything after the first 40 minutes, Girl A is such a perfect woman with good intentions that they may as well hang a halo on her head and get it over with, and Girl B falls in love with Guy C for on apparent reason. For those looking for nudity, you'd better look elsewhere, as there are maybe 4 short bits of bare breasts, and 3 of them are later on. Something else unforgivable is a scene where the group gets a ride to their destination with some band. A few members play a ps2 game (it looks like Armored Core), but the sound coming from the tv is obviously from the first Street Fighter II game on SNES. It's the music from China, and you hear all the old sound effects. This doesn't make any sense at all, and is a disgrace to both game series, especially Street Fighter since, well...I love that series. Even worse is the generic ponk (pop-punk) music that plagues the movie. Just when one song ends and you breath a sigh of relief, another one starts up. I should've known better since the box mentions "Special Appearance by Avril Lavigne" under the title. Luckily, she barely does anything until the end, and is never seen again. If this is what her career's down to, she's no longer a threat in modern music. Add in an ending that you can see from miles away, and you've got one forgettable movie. I can't stress it enough- if you want a better comedy for the same age demographic, go for the American Pie series, or even better- The Girl Next Door.

Since the budget for this thing wasn't that great to begin with, the visual quality isn't anything to rave about. Everything looks basic...worse than some tv shows even, and that's sad. Some backgrounds are muddy, close ups are blocky, and there's grain in the majority of the scenes. The audio's just as bad: most scenes are quiet, save the horrible soundtrack, and the mixing is so off, you'll find yourself playing with the volume on the remote every few minutes to rebalance it.

Aside from bloopers before the credits roll, the only other "extra" is 9 minutes of trailers for other MGM movies. The back of the box didn't even mention special features, so I didn't know what to expect. But hey, that means less time that the disc diseases your dvd player.

If I sound like I hated this movie, it's because I did. Sure, there were maybe 5 small laughs that I had, but that was it. I regret watching this, and will make sure to sell it by the end of the week. Things like these recent National Lampoon movies only further my mindset that I can get a movie made if crap like this does. Mark my words, after the script I'm writing, which is a disaster/zombie movie, I'll write a teen comedy, and it'll be the cure for STDs like this.

"You slipped into my life as easily as vermouth into a glass of gin," purrs reclusive singing star Angela Arden, as played by camp icon Charles Busch (<I>Psycho Beach Party</I>). Arden is not only haunted by a secret, she's treated like dirt by her louse of a husband (Phillip Baker Hall, <I>Boogie Nights</I>), her snoopy maid (Frances Conroy, <I>Six Feet Under</I>), and her petulant daughter (Natasha Lyonne, <I>Slums of Beverly Hills</I>). Only her mentally defective son (Stark Sands) and a well-endowed gigolo (Jason Priestley, <I>Beverly Hills 90210</I>) treat her with love and affection. Is it any wonder she takes drastic action to improve her life? Replete with lurid sex, incestuous overtones, a poisoned suppository, musical numbers, an acid freakout, and black-and-white flashbacks, <I>Die Mommie Die!</I> lovingly sends up movie soap operas. The tone is uneven, but Busch skillfully walks a razor-sharp line throughout. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Charles Busch is FANTASTIC! Lana turner , move over. I believe there is not one female actress in Holywood today thant can ACT! Charles can act at being all these awesome women in a drop of a pin. The movie has some flaws but they makeup with all the great talent and the FUN. This movie is Fun and if your in for laughs and DRAMA check it out. Great to see at a dinner party.

4 out of 5 stars A Drag Queen Extravaganza!.......2006-11-14

Charles Busch, who wrote the script for this film as well as plays the lead, has produced an odd soap opera with appeal to gay audiences. I had never heard of Charles Busch but he obviously is the penultimate drag queen in his outlandish flowing gowns, wigs, and dalmation pantsuits.

The story is actually based on Greek tragedy but in the hands of Charles Busch, it becomes a camp classic. The story is based on the Greek myth of the twin sisters, Helen of Troy and Clytaemnestra. Clyteamenestra is married to Agamemnon. Agamemnon has sacrificed his oldest daughter in an effort to change the course of the Trojan War, which he wins. However his wife Clyteamenestra has taken a lover, Aegisthus. He has another daughter, Electra, and a son, Orestes. In the hands of Charles Busch, these Greek mythology characters come to life in a sordid tale of Hollywood murder, incest, and all kinds of other sexual oddities.

Jason Priestly plays the bisexual gigolo lover who seduces both the son and the daughter in the story. One well acted character is the maid, played by Francis Conroy, the mother from "Six Feet Under". Natasha Lyonne plays the role of Electra seeking revenge on her mother. Phillip Baker Hall plays the role of Agamemnon, the Hollywood producer.

Charles Busch, playing actress/singer/dancer Angela Arden, is on camera about 90% of the time and carries the film with his costumes and hairstyles. The clothes he wears are outlandish but entertaining. After I saw the DVD with a group of guys, it was interesting how they described all the outfits you will see in this film.

Some parts of the film move more smoothly than others but overall it is entertaining and a bit over the top.

5 out of 5 stars Wow This was Lots of Fun!!!!.......2006-10-18

I loved this clever and very campy film. I have always been a fan of female impersonators. I was very impressed and saw in NYC during the 70s the late Charles Pierce, and was equally impressed with the late Craig Russell, the star of the 70s movie "Outrageous" which I highly recommend. I am surprised that I had never seen the work of Charles Busch until I bought this DVD. He is truly a gifted performer. One forgets a bit that he is a man in a dress and you get into his very good acting and comedy effort. I felt that the scenes in black and white seemed to show him as being more male. The movie is one that is played for camp to the hilt and they used a Beverly Hills mansion to film lots of scenes in, and that worked very well. I sort of felt that the film resembled the movie from the 70s "Something for Everyone" in that a young man, basically a gigilo in both films, gets involved with the families, and then proceeds to seduce everyone. This film also makes the viewer work very hard to figure out what is going on, and they basically pull the wool over your eyes as to the true identity of the main character until close to the end. The murders are handled cleverly as well, not being at all what they appear. I thought Jason Priestly and Natasha Lyonne played very well against the work by Mr Busch. In the interview section Busch, who really looks so dramatically different out of drag describes how he was trying to send up different bits from old movies and great film stars of the past like Bette Davis. I think at one point he recreated the scene to some degree in "Sunset Boulevard" where Gloria Swanson is lead away by the cops. Obviously Mr Busch really had so much fun doing this film. I was not aware this had been a stage play. I do think it worked better as a movie as they were a bit restriced with the stage set which I saw on the special features. Oh and I must not forget to pay homage to the incredible costumes for Mr Busch which really were so dramatic. The two designers came forth with some great ones. I needed a laugh, and I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to laugh like crazy and is not put off by camp or parody. It also made me realize I need to watch again the fun and delightful "Wigstock". I find if I am down and depressed putting that movie on really lifts my spirits, so now if I need help elevating my mood in the future I will call on the zany and extremely talented Charles Busch. Finally in a small part Frances Conroy, who of course played the Mom in the brilliant HBO series "Six Feet Under" shows her talents for camp and comedy quite effectively as a somewhat mousy house maid, who has a bit of an evangelic Christian aspect to her character. This certainly is not for all tastes, I would not share this with my elderly parents as they might find it a bit offensive, and wouldn't get into the campiness of it. Everyone in this movie gave their best and I will certainly think of buying other DVDS that Charles Busch is a part of!!! This is one I was so delighted with I intend to watch it again very soon. Also I loved the way they intentionally made the lip synching look so off. A Campy Treat, This movie either works for you, or its doesn't!!
If you are a free spirit, go for it, if you are conservative, and uptight do not even think about it!!!

3 out of 5 stars Fun and well made........2006-09-05

"Die Mommie Die" is defintely a "gay interest" movie, but it is so well produced that it stands head and shoulders above most films of it's type whose audiences are usually limited to film festivals and fringe interest cinemas. Charles Busch is the talent responsible for writing and creating the project, and it's safe to say that his portrayal of the central characte of Angela Arden is what brings the film alive.

As Angela Arden (in drag but played straight), Busch gives us a glamorous former cabaret star, now living in the shadow of her past success, and surrounded by a wealth, but also a family full of deceit, hate and trouble. Angela is herself haunted by her own past, and the entry into her life of a young male lover who also seduces both her son and daughter seems to provoke a chain of events with very melodramatic and tragic consequences. All par for the course really as the film is intended to evoke the golden age of Hollywood melodrama as made famous by Bette Davis, Joan Crawford et al, and it does this pretty well, with it's own modern agenda creeping in, of course.

This is undoubtedly a vehicle for Charles Busch, and he makes a stunning job of it in my book. The photography, lighting, costumes and hairdos are all spot on, creating the perfect vision of a star every time he/she appears on screen. He even manages to deliver a great script, with plenty of brand new quotable lines for any aspiring screen goddesses out there, such as: "The only part of this house that I don't hate is that door, because that's how I'm getting out of this dump!" (ok that's not verbatim, but you get the idea!).

The fact that Busch keeps the camp element quite low key means that the film is capable of acheiving the valuable trick of pulling you into the plot, which, although based quite blatantly on certain star vehicles (if I say which films, I risk revealing the films twist ending!), still manages to hold your attention all the way through. Actually if there are any histrionics in the film, they come from the other cast members (especially the younger ones) rather than Busch, although Frances Conroy (from Six Feet Under) does a great job as the loyal maid, Bootsie, and so does Philip Baker Hall as Angela's tyrannical husband.

Above all, everyone involved in the film seems to be having a great time, and it's clear from the luxurious photography and design that a considerable amount of talent was working behind the camera as well. There are many stunning shots and some quite fun and novel compositions (one shot of Jason Priestly unzipping his fly fades perfectly into a shot of a cocktail glass on a tray - well, you probably have to see that to understand what I mean there!). I enjoyed watching this film immensely, and the twist ending surprised me (even though as soon as it happened, I remembered immediately which famous star movie I had seen it in before)

Put aside any preconceptions and you might just find that you have a lot of fun watching this. That said, if your preconception is of seeing an unashamed parody/homage to the great Hollywood women's pictures - with a modern slant - then keep it and you should be rewarded!

3 out of 5 stars Funny in parts.......2006-05-05

There are certainly some humorous moments in this odd little picture, but overall I'd say it's just a film made to showcase the talent of a drag queen to command attention. It was like watching a really bad soap opera.
