There's an extra coat of hot wax on Pixar's vibrant, NASCAR-influenced comedy about a world populated entirely by cars. Lightning McQueen (voiced by Owen Wilson) is the slick rookie taking the Piston Cup series by storm when the last race of the season (the film's high-octane opening) ends in a three-way tie. On the way to the tie-breaker race in California, Lightning loses his way off Route 66 in the Southwest desert and is taught to stop and smell the roses by the forgotten citizens of Radiator Springs. It's odd to have such a slim story from the whizzes of Pixar, and the film pales a bit from their other films (though can that be a fair comparison?). Nonetheless, <I>Cars</I> is another gleaming ride with Pixar founder John Lasseter, who's directing for the first time since <I>Toy Story 2</I>. There's the usual spectrum of excellent characters teamed with appropriate voice talent, loads of smooth humor for kids and parents alike, knockout visuals, and a colorful array of sidekicks, including a scene-stealing baby blue forklift named Guido. Lightning's plight is changed with the help of former big-city lawyer Sally Carrera (Pixar veteran Bonnie Hunt), the town's patriarch Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), and kooky tow truck Mater (Larry the Cable Guy). <I>The Incredibles</I> was the first Pixar film to break the 100-minute barrier, but had enough story not to suffer; <I>Cars</I>, at 116 minutes (including some must-see end credit footage), is not as fortunate, plus it never pierces the heart. Trivia fans should have bonanza with the frame-by-frame DVD function; the movie is stuffed with in-jokes, some appearing only for an instant. Ages 5 and up. <I>--Doug Thomas</I>

Description

From the acclaimed creators of TOY STORY, THE INCREDIBLES, and FINDING NEMO comes a high-octane adventure comedy that shows life is about the journey, not the finish line. Hotshot rookie race car Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is living life in the fast lane until he hits a detour on his way to the most important race of his life. Stranded in Radiator Springs, a forgotten town on the old Route 66, he meets Sally, Mater, Doc Hudson (Paul Newman), and a variety of quirky characters who help him discover that there's more to life than trophies and fame. Revved up with a sensational soundtrack, featuring Rascal Flatts, Sheryl Crow, John Mayer, James Taylor, and others, plus exciting bonus features, including the exclusive short movie "Mater And The Ghostlight," CARS is full of freewheeling fun for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best animated features ever!.......2007-06-24

Every medium has its own unique opportunities, with animation its the ability to express emotion that has universal appeal without all of the trappings that come with an actor of a specific gender, race, etc.

The cars in Cars are more human than human. This is a very touching movie and true quality family fare. Its a great movie to buy- we watch it over and over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Can't believe this didn't win the Oscar!.......2007-06-20

I watched this with two aging race drivers: one a local dirt track champion and the other a former NASCAR Winston Cup driver. We all loved this movie. Besides being a high quality animated presentation, my companions pointed out the accuracy and realism regarding the racing episodes and techniques that was evident to them. This movie will be a classic!

4 out of 5 stars Good movie for the children.......2007-06-14

Richly colored. I enjoyed that a moral behavior was emphasized. Fun characters with which you can relate. Well done!

2 out of 5 stars Grandson wouldn't sit through it.......2007-06-13

I found the lack of people in this movie made it kind of silly. Who built the buildings, the racetrack, and the cars themselves? I thought it would have been a little bit more watchable if the cars had humans to deal and relate with. The cars could have spoke to one another on the sly so to speak.

I know this movie was for kids, but unfortunately there wasn't a lot of thought that went into the making of it. I was truly bored along with my grandson trying to watch it.

5 out of 5 stars my whole family loved it.......2007-05-30

My husband and i loved it! My 11 year old son as well as my 14 month old son loved it, they were so excited about the animated cars.
The first DVD i got in the mail from Amazon kept freezing up and skipping a section, i contacted them and they sent a new one right to us.

<img border="0" align=left src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/aplus/iceage/iceage5-300.jpg">The love life of a woolly mammoth--handled with G-rated delicacy--drives this sequel to the first computer-animated romp in the age of prehistoric mammals. While the first Ice Age took a delightful premise and suffocated it with a formulaic plot--in which a mammoth named Manfred (voiced by Ray Romano, Everyone Loves Raymond), a sloth named Sid (John Leguizamo, Moulin Rouge!), and a sabre-tooth tiger named Diego (Denis Leary, Rescue Me) helped an abandoned human infant return to its tribe (basically, Three Mammals and a Baby)--the sequel takes the now-familiar setting, gives it a shapeless, episodic storyline, and yet somehow becomes pretty darn entertaining. Faced with the threat of a flood from melting ice, our heroic trio are on the run to escape from their blossoming valley. On the way, they meet a female mammoth (Queen Latifah, Bringing Down the House) who thinks she's an opossum and get menaced by some freshly defrosted carnivo! rous fish. Add into the mix a herd of lava-worshipping mini-sloths, some Busby Berkeley-style vultures, and more ingenious slapstick featuring the acorn-crazed Scrat, and Ice Age: The Meltdown will amuse even jaded adults. -- Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars good comedy.......2007-06-17

Hmmm..... I thought Ray Romano was the star of the movie? After all, he's the one who played the voice for the main character, a giant self-conscious mammoth. For some reason, amazon doesn't list his name as one of the stars.

Hard to believe, but I didn't know what a mammoth was before watching this movie. At least, I didn't know they were huge elephant-like creatures.

The animation in the film is probably the main highlight, and the thing most likely to grab your attention. Why? Because there's nothing else like it. It's almost life-like. In fact, the atmosphere is nearly identical to the empty and quiet sound you'd hear if you were to step outside and walk through a giant icy land. Every time the squirrel tries to retrieve his nut, you're treated to an eerie silence, with no music playing- just sound effects. Very unsettling sound.

Anyway, despite that, this is mostly a childrens movie. Adults might find it funny for a few of the lines from all the movie stars that give their voices for the animal characters. It's funny and exciting, and that's what a good animation film is supposed to do to be a success.

5 out of 5 stars amm6.......2007-06-08

I bought this for my great grandson for his birthday. I'm sure he and his brothers enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Funny and entertaining!.......2007-06-04

A nice entertaining family movie! The squirrel is even funnier than before. Would buy again. Watched over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Blu-ray DVD and Really entertaining animation for the whole family! .......2007-05-21

I have to tell you that I have watched the standard dvd version and I thought it was great. I then bought the "Blu-ray" Version and it is ABSOLUTELY AMAZING! Excellent picture quality. But, (don't you hate it when there's a "but") I wasn't able to hear the audio on my Sony 5.1 Dolby Digital Receiver because it was presented in DTS instead, The French and the Spanish Audios were both both presented in 5.1 Dolby Digital but the English only in DTS and NO 5.1 Dolby. But why? that was a little disappointing. So I was finally able to find a way to go to the DVD player manu ( I own the newest Samsung BD-P1200 BD player) and switch the audio to PCM instead of Bitsream. Otherwise, the disc menu did not have an option for English unless you have a DTS receiver.

SUMMARY:

Pros:
1) Funny and entertaining Movie.
2) Excellent Picture quality.
3) One of the very best Blu-ray DVD.

Cons:
1) Price-why pay about $28 for ONE movie, when most competing HD DVD's sells for $19.95 and for $27 you get a Combo DVD that plays on Both HD DVD and standard and still offer and DELIVER more advanced Audio and Video encoding.
2) No English Dolby Digital Audio Support.

4 out of 5 stars The Ice Age in Meltdown is still a solid . . ........2007-05-21

piece of enjoyment. The Ice Age - The Meltdown continues the story of the principle characters from the first epic animated story, and adds new characters and relationships as the story of the "Meltdown" unfolds. This episode adds a love interest for Manny the Mammouth.

Scrat continues to amuse everyone in his quest to retain his acorn through all kinds of difficulties. He certainly has some bad luck, but continues on like a good Timex watch!

I just love this group of characters.

When <I>Seinfeld</I> wrapped up its ninth and final season in the spring of 1998, the popular show's namesake and cocreator decided to offer a symbolic gesture to his fans. Taped for HBO in August 1998, on the final date of Jerry Seinfeld's tour appearances at New York City's Broadhurst Theater, <I>I'm Telling You for the Last Time</I> presents the standup comedian's so-called "final" standup, or at least his final tour with the standup material that made him famous. The video opens with a great prologue in which Seinfeld's old material is literally laid to rest, with many of Seinfeld's comedy colleagues in attendance at the "funeral." (Jay Leno is there, but David Letterman is conspicuously absent, and while it's a bit self-congratulatory to show Seinfeld's fellow comedians fighting like vultures over his abandoned jokes, it's worth it just to see Garry Shandling pilfering from the catering table like a homeless intruder.)

Whether he's talking about airline flights, cab drivers, or memories of Halloween and an ill-fitting Superman costume, Seinfeld's observational humor is as timeless and sharp as the day he first performed it. Even the most familiar routines (such as the one about pharmacists with a superiority complex) are like old friends who still haven't overstayed their welcome. Seinfeld's delivery is polished to a shine--he's a consummate professional--and an impromptu Q&A with his appreciative audience demonstrates that he's equally adept with a fast and witty comeback. This performance certainly wouldn't be the last we'd see of Jerry Seinfeld, but from the perspective of phenomenal fame and fortune, it's a fitting farewell to the classic "bits" that took him to the top. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant Timing and Comedy.......2007-05-28

I think People sometime's forget just what a brilliant comedian Jerry Seinfeld really is. The television series was remarkable and the best ever, in my opinion. This movie; Jerry Seinfeld Live on Broadway: I'm Telling You for the Last Time, reminds us that the show was based on material that Jerry came up with. I have had the pleasure of seeing Jerry twice in Sacramento, California. He is brilliant with the most impeccable timing I have witnessed. This movie captures Jerry at the peak of his performing prowess with timeless material that serves as a testament to his sharp wit and billiant comedic mind. 5 Stars!

5 out of 5 stars A must have for any stand up comedy fan!.......2007-04-10

Whether you are a Seinfeld fan or not, this is a MUST HAVE! You will laugh from beginning to end and be able to watch it over and over and it only gets funnier every time you watch it. Jerry Seinfeld's clever and witty outlook on normal life scenarios provides humor that any person could relate to. If I ever lost this video, I would run right back out and buy it again just to be sure that I had it at my disposal when I needed a laugh. I enjoy showing it to others who have never seen it and watching them crack up laughing as it is always a good time.

The delightful designs of William Joyce (writer/illustrator of such popular children's books as George Shrinks and Bently & Egg) make Robots a joy to behold. The round, bouncy, and ramshackle forms of hero Rodney Copperbottom and his computer-animated friends are part of an ornate and daffy <table align=left cellpadding="6" cellspacing="0" > <tr><td align="center"> <img src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/video/stills/robots/robots2-small.jpg" border=0 align=top>
<span class="tiny">Fender providing assistance. </span> </td></tr> </table>Rube-Goldberg universe of elaborate contraptions and gleaming metallic surfaces. Rodney (voiced with a hint-of-Scottish lilt by Ewan McGregor) is a young inventor who sets off for Robot City to work for Big Weld (Mel Brooks), the supreme inventor of the mechanical world. But upon his arrival, Rodney discovers that Big Weld has disappeared, and the slick, shiny Ratchet (Greg Kinnear, As Good As It Gets) is phasing out the spare parts that lumpen robots need to function and replacing them with "upgrades"--expensive and glistening new exoskeletons. Unfortunately, from this suitable beginning, the story degenerates into a series of action sequences that make very little sense, though some are kinetic and fun (though others are only there to serve the inevitable Robots video game). Most kids will enjoy the sheer visual pleasure of the movie, but compared to the narrative richness of Pixar movies like The Incredibles and Toy Story, that pleasure is pretty short-lived. Also featuring the voices of Robin Williams, Halle Berry, Jim Broadbent, Amanda Bynes, Jennifer Coolidge, and many, many more. --Bret Fetzer

<b>DVD Features</b>

Jennifer Coolidge returns as the voice of Aunt Fanny in a mildly amusing new short, "Aunt Fanny's Tour of Booty," which allows her to again be the butt of the joke. Fans of the characters will enjoy both a 17-minute discussion of the robots' creation as well as profiles of 11 of the bots, including early, almost unrecognizable conceptual sketches and brief interviews with the voice cast. The original short is fairly dull, and of the three deleted scenes, the most finished is an extended version of Rodney's initial meeting with Tim at the gate. One other is in sketch form only but does preserve another performance by Robin Williams. The kids' games are pretty good. There's a dancing robot that will perform eight routines on command or in random order. A memory game has a bit of replay value, and the build-a-bot segment takes some thought and investigation. The Xbox demo is a nifty little diversion that transforms one element (the transport-pod race) of the full-length, single-player Xbox game into a frenetic one- to four-player free-for-all.

In their commentary track, director Chris Wedge and producer-inspiration William Joyce have to remind each other to stop patting themselves on the back, but it is interesting to hear them talk about old games such as Mousetrap that played a part in developing the film. (Wedge's frequent references to a possible "director's cut" might not seem like a joke to DVD buyers who have gotten tired of DVD rereleases.) The commentary track by the Blue Sky technical team might be better, offering insights into the characters and the creation of the film without lapsing into too much techie-speak. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>

5 out of 5 stars Fun, funny family movie.......2007-06-08

We sat together as a family right after supper, the 3 of us were enthrolled with the plot, the actions but the characters as well.
Human characteristics very apropiate, specially since cast are "robots".I feel this movie is great for young children as well because role models are clealy established from the start. Our highly functional autistic son truly enjoyed it. Halle Berry is superb.

5 out of 5 stars excellent childrens entertainment.......2007-05-14

My grandson has watched it approx six times so it is well worth the money.

3 out of 5 stars Some robots are funny.......2007-05-08

but others are just robots! It is a cute movie for kids. The previews were funnier though.

3 out of 5 stars Signs of the times.......2007-04-28

This movie is probably the saddest I've seen in a while. I can't remember the last time I saw a movie that was ruined to this extent. I've seen worse movies, of course, but I have never seen such a mix of such clever, fun entertainment with such sheer Hollywood trash.

This film shines in its action sequences and its design--I, a reputed animation buff/nerd couldn't be happier with its looks. However, its story's potential was lost because of some quite obvious, fundamental flaws.

All of the hilarious, personality-filled Buster Keaton and Marx Bros. antics of the Rusties are overshadowed by the crude humor that plagues our day and age. All of the fun stuff is equally balanced with sheer boredom and nastiness. The fundamental problem, though, was the contradiction in the story department.

This movie, I think, scared Blue Sky to death. "Be yourself" would offend FAR too many upper-Hollywood types, even though it had great potential for a movie. So what do they do? Instead of following through with the natural progression of their story, they have the "pretty girl" be among the upgrades. Cappy--her lack of acting and personality--as well as the directors' unwillingness to follow through on their premise doomed this movie to an early grave. All of the fun of sneaking into the Bigweld Ball, the mouse-trap-like ride through town, and, of course, "Singin' in the Oil" was dragged down into quagmire by the unwillingness of the directors/producers/etc. to tell the story that this wanted to tell.

All in all, this movie is worth watching--just not all the way through. Certain sequences are clever and fun, and others just aren't worth the thirty or forty minutes it takes. Be glad for DVD scene selections.

3 out of 5 stars Metallic World.......2007-04-28

With a cast of some very big actors and actresses, "Robots" had a tonne of potential. As a growing fan of animated movies, I was really looking forward to seeing this one, especially after some of the advertising shorts looked so good. While I rather enjoyed the movie, it did not "wow" me as others had done.

The animation is not an attempt to compete with the likes of Pixar, and the different style really works well for the movie. The detail is excellent, the characters all come off well, and the movie has a good overall texture to it. All in all, the animators crafted the movie exceptionally well.

In the humour side, there is some for the adult audience, such as when Rodney's father misses the "delivery" and his mum makes a comment that the fun is in "making the baby". Apart from once or twice, I do not recall much else along the same lines. The likes of The Incredibles (Two-Disc Collector's Edition) has a lot more of the references to other films and so on for the adults.

Having said that, a lot of the humour is quite funny, mostly from the different characters and their ways. Robin Williams is particularly deserving of mention, as his charm and style with animations comes right on through, perhaps more than other characters.

Overall, "Robots" is a good film, and certainly worth having a look. I enjoyed a lot, but I am not sure I would want to sit through multiple viewings like I have with other movies of the same genre.

<img border="0" align=left src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/aplus/iceage/iceage5-300.jpg"> The love life of a woolly mammoth--handled with G-rated delicacy--drives this sequel to the first computer-animated romp in the age of prehistoric mammals.

This slice of cornball Americana is so much fun you'll be tempted to stand up and salute. Director and costar Clint Eastwood manages to turn what might have been ludicrous into a jubilant tribute to age and experience, and <I>Space Cowboys</I> succeeds as two movies in one--a comedy about retired pilots given one last shot at glory and an <I>Apollo 13</I>-like thriller with all the requisite heroics. With a dream cast of Hollywood vets playing old farts described in tabloids as "The Ripe Stuff," the movie jumps from a 1958 prologue (establishing their lost bid for space travel) to 40-plus years later, when the retired Air Force aces (Eastwood, James Garner, Donald Sutherland, Tommy Lee Jones) volunteer to rescue a falling Russian satellite that only Eastwood's character can repair.

It turns out that Russky bird is a cold war leftover equipped with live nuclear warheads, and <I>Space Cowboys</I> revs up to a rousing climax in which our heroes prove their mettle. But first the comedy: watching these codgers struggle to pass NASA's physical tests is a total hoot, with running gags about wrinkles, dentures, and oysters for sagging libidos. (Sutherland is the scene-stealer, but they're all having a blast.) Once in space, the movie gets down to business, and the visual-effects wizards at Industrial Light and Magic provide stunning vistas from Earth's orbit; a shot looking down at the boot of Italy is particularly beautiful. A subplot involving a weasely NASA administrator (James Cromwell) is rather perfunctory, but it hardly matters. <I>Space Cowboys</I> earns its wings, once again demonstrating Eastwood's comfort with any genre he chooses. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

Description

In 1958, the members of Team Daedalus, a group of top Air Force test pilots, were ready to serve their country as the first Americans in space but were pushed aside. Now, as a Russian satellite fails and is about to crash into earth, Team Daedalus is back in action in a rescue mission.

5 out of 5 stars For Those Who Love Clint Eastwood.......2007-04-14

This is a wonderful movie; interactions between the main characters (Frank Corvin, Hawk Hawkins, Tank, and Jerry) are great to watch!!

5 out of 5 stars Good Actors.......2007-02-15

Nice job, I think the stars had fun doing this one. Nothing real special just a fun movie to watch.

4 out of 5 stars Chuck Yeager's Revenge..........2006-11-04

This is a fun movie based on an interesting premise. Back in the 1950's it was the Air Force that assumed that they were going to lead the country into space. Air Force test pilots were pushing aircraft to the edges of space and preparing to become the first astronauts when space research was taken away from the Air Force and became the mission of the newly created civilian agency, NASA. This was a real shocker to most of the top pilots of the Air Force, and although many of them left the Air Force to join the fledgling NASA eventually making it in to space, many like Chuck Yeager, (the man who broke the sound barrier) stayed in the suddenly mundane Air Force. Yeager served in Vietnam, and led an Air Force Fighter Group in Europe in the 1970's, but never got closer to space than he was in the late 50's.

In this movie, Clint Eastwood plays Frank Corvin a Yeager-like member of a fictional Air Force project called Team Daedalus that was pushing at the limits of space in the late 50's, only to have the rug pulled out from under them when space research went to NASA. Tommy Lee Jones plays Hawk, the best pilot on the team, and James Garner and Donald Sutherland are supporting members of the team.

The movie starts very effectively as a blue-tinted flashback to the Muroc glory days of the Air Force sometime in 1958 with a portrayal of Team Daedalus' fall from grace. The theme music, written by Eastwood who also directed the movie, complements perfectly this nostalgic look at simpler and starker times.

Flashing forward to the present the film picks up the pace as we learn that the Russians have a huge communications satellite called Ikon that has a deteriorating orbit and will be plummeting to Earth in 70 days or so. The Russians are adamant that the satellite must be saved and the only way to do it is with the Space Shuttle. Unfortunately, the shuttle isn't big enough to retrieve the massive satellite to return it to Earth, so repairs will need to be made in orbit. Adding to the complexity of the project is that the guidance system is 1970's era technology and there is no one around that knows enough about it to fix it.

Surprisingly, it turns out that the guidance system is a copy of the guidance system that Eastwood's character Frank Corvin designed for SkyLab in the 1970's, and Corvin is still around, although retired. Suffice it to say that Corvin is lured out of retirement by the chance to go into space as long as he can take the other members of the old Team Daedalus with him.

Eastwood, Jones, Garner and Sutherland are hilarious as the cantankerous old veterans cramming to learn how to fly a crash Space Shuttle mission. And James Cromwell, one of Hollywood's great character actors of the last 20 years does a fantastic job of playing the oily project manager, Bob Gerson. Cromwell is the kind of guy that seemingly pops up in small roles in every movie you see, but never actually stars in one. Every era of Hollywood has actors like that, think of Sidney Greenstreet in the 30's and 40's, and without them movies wouldn't be what they are. That said, Cromwell is truly great in this movie in what he does best, a supporting role.

The rest of the movie is pretty standard: they go into space, things don't work out the way they were planned, there's a surprise or two, a disaster to be averted, and a "will they make it?" trip home. But the special effects are fantastic, everything outside of the shuttle was done with computer graphics with the actors faces plopped in behind their face shields, and it is absolutely convincing. Of course you hear the hiss of the propulsion units on the space suits and the roar of the maneuvering rockets in supposedly silent space, but physics has never been Hollywood's strong point.

And while the second half of the movie is pretty formulaic, it is well done. The first half of the movie is different enough to make the whole thing an interesting and entertaining whole.

4 out of 5 stars Old codgers show the young-uns how its done!.......2006-03-26

Okay--it is a viable genre--the old codgers who come to save the day and don't use the new fangled computers that the young-uns are dependent on--etc. This is the top of that genre--Donald Sutherland displays why a younger woman would go for an older man--his aplomb, lack of shame and frank yet respectful worship of female beauty are hard to resist. Tommy Lee is hilarious, Clint is always Clint and James Garner rounds out the team.

Enjoyable and worth seeing.

This is one movie I will watch over and over. The actors are superb in their characters and the movie seems to be real. I thoroughly enjoyed it.

If you see <I>Comedian</I> expecting a concert film with Jerry Seinfeld, you'll be disappointed. But if you're looking for an incisive--almost surgical--examination of the psyche of a stand-up comedian, this is your movie. <I>Comedian</I> zigzags back and forth between the hugely successful Seinfeld, who's trying to get back to his stand-up roots by developing an entirely new act, and an unknown comic named Orny Adams, whose naked craving for success is almost painful to behold. Adams lays bare his ego to an embarrassing degree; Seinfeld is more subtle but just as revealing about the fears and anxieties that drive him to go back on stage. By following these two through comedy clubs, festivals, and spots on David Letterman's talk show, the documentary cunningly explores how jokes are put together, the in-the-trenches camaraderie (tinged with competition) of stand-ups, and the sheer existential terror of trying to make people laugh. <I>--Bret Fetzer</I>

Description

Jerry Seinfeld is a working stand-up comic again. COMEDIAN is a candidly revealing, intimately observed, and often very funny look at what it takes to be a comedian. On-stage, Jerry delivers his hilarious brand of observational humor. Off-stage, he struggles with difficult material, confronts self-doubt, revels in small successes, and accepts help and support from friends and colleagues, including Colin Quinn, Ray Romano, Chris Rock, Garry Shandling, Jay Leno, and Bill Cosby. COMEDIAN also discovers the sharp wit of rising young comic Orny Adams -- outspoken, insecure, and fanatical about becoming the "next big thing." What emerge are two fascinating journeys by two contrasting personalities who have some surprising parallels.

4 out of 5 stars Great Insight Into The Life of a Comedian.......2007-06-09

This is an engrossing film that highlights the life of an up-and-coming comic, against mega-comic Jerry Seinfeld's return to stand-up. It features many interesting behind the scenes situations with Jerry's famous comic friends. Well shot and crafted. As an interesting comparison, watch Jerry and friends early appearances on The Tonight Show when they were first starting out - The Best of The Tonight Show - Stand-Up Comedians (2 Discs)

2 out of 5 stars Totally Misleading.......2007-05-08

This was a total waste of money....I Love Seinfeld, but this "documentary" has little to do with Jerry Seinfeld and a lot to do with a bunch of other comedians. WAY MISLEADING!!!!

2 out of 5 stars Seinfeld - behind the scenes.......2007-03-15

This portrays to be a "behind the scenes" view of several comedians' lives showing the ups and downs of the occupation. I found it to be boring and that it just drags on. It had some funny lines but was not a comedy; it gave us some information of the occupational lives of comedians but just scattered, disjointed and incomplete. I just do not believe there is any reason for this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Who is this guy Seinfeld..........2007-02-01

Back in the last millenium this fellow Seinfeld apparently had a tv show. Who knew? The best part of this movie is the commentary by Jerry.

Seinfeld's obsession with pettiness, materialism, fame, money, name-dropping and everything wrong with America is rivetting. It's like watching a car crash: you can't turn away. Seinfeld needed to show his private jet (several times), his entourage, his penthouse view of Central Park, his private beach and his other possessions (like his pretty wife and child) to prove to us all that he is where it's at. He obviously doesn't believe it himself. In his words, "The dream of every Jewish man is to own a home in Malibu". How much more out of touch can you get. Even Sadaam Husein showed more humility. The psychopathology that forms this kind of narcissistic demon is revealled in the homunculus that is Orny Adams. A foil to the materially successful Seinfeld, Adams is a purely dysthymic, neurotic egotist. The contrast is presumably intended to highlight Jerry's success against the odds of an industry that delights in degrading and humiliating its workers. The Comedians in this movie are paid poorly, forced to work in smelly, decrepit clubs in seedy neighborhoods to rude and unappreciative audiences. We should all feel sorry for them. But we have to really feel for Jerry (or so he believes) because he is driven by an angst to toil his craft even when he has the creature comforts to relax on a beach. In reality, we should pity Seinfeld for having become so enmeshed in the bicoastal despiritualistic obsession with celebrity that he feels a need to create a documentary channeling his deeper disaffection with his own empty existance and seeking a greater salvation by reminding us all that we are not him.
Very funny.

4 out of 5 stars Stars Made of Flesh and Blood........2006-06-13

Despite the confidence that most comedians project, this documentary showcases the fact that these often brilliant performers suffer from the same type of maladies as the rest of us. They are filled with anxiety, irritability, and ambition. By focusing on a legend, Jerry Seinfeld, and an unknown, Orny Adams, the audience discerns some of these characteristics and others which result in greatness on the stage. Examples evident are the need for compulsive attention to detail along with personal obsession over delivery and rehearsal. It's hard to imagine anyone going anywhere in that business without the concentrated efforts we witness here. It's surprising to find Adams watching tapes of himself and filling notebooks copiously with jokes and material.

Seinfeld is probably the most talented comedian that I've ever seen, but I never had any idea just how much effort he puts into his work. He labors for six months building, writing and performing until he becomes confident in the new shtick he has created. Even then we find that he is not satisfied. He is an intense perfectionist as is Adams, but the younger man is far less healthy than Seinfeld. Jerry may joke about neurosis but Adams appears to be the genuine article. He is oversensitive, self-doubting, agitated, abrasive, and fairly depressed, yet in every scene he tries to sell us on why he is so great. He doesn't really believe it and neither do we. When George Shapiro decides to represent him, he tells Adams something to the effect of that he's going to be a big success but will forever remain unhappy. Without knowing him well, Shapiro has already mastered his client. After Adams laments to Seinfeld that he has not made it, the genius puts it all in perfect perspective by asking him what exactly what he'd rather be doing with his life. Adams can give no answer which is itself an excellent answer and reflective of why these fellows sacrifice so much for their vocations. This is one of those films that would be impossible to quit watching in the middle as every character is engaging at some level.

Canadian filmmaker Ron Mann has specialized in making counter-cultural documentaries since 1978, and Tales of the Rat Fink is his masterpiece. Rarely has the combination of technique and subject matter been presented with such symbiotic perfection, and Mann's tribute to Ed "Big Daddy" Roth will appeal to anyone who recalls the glory days of hot rods and custom cars. Roth pioneered customizing in the late '50s, taking his cue from the legendary Von Dutch (whose automotive pinstripes "flowed like jazz") to become the first hot-rodder to sculpt custom cars out of fiberglass, the first to airbrush custom "monster" designs on T-shirts, and the inventor of Rat Fink, the "anti-Mickey Mouse" adopted as the drooling mascot of rodders, surfers, model-building hobbyists and assorted misfits throughout the '60s. Roth's best-known custom cars--The Outlaw, The Beatnik Bandit, Mysterion and others--remain timeless classics of southern California's custom-car culture, and they're all shown here on dazzling display.

It's a pity Roth (1932-2001) didn't live to witness Mann's exquisite collaboration with animator Mike Roberts, whose dynamic contributions bring Rat Fink to life in all his wretched glory. John Goodman splendidly narrates as a posthumous Roth, looking back at his creations as numerous pop-cultural icons (Ann-Margret, the Smothers Brothers, and author Tom Wolfe, who first brought Roth to the world's attention) lend their voices to custom cars that "talk" with flashing headlights, similar to (but more reverent than) Pixar's <I>Cars</I>. It's a perfect way of honoring Roth, the culture he created, and the enduring legacy of his "weirdo" ingenuity. Mann's playful tribute makes it perfectly clear that Roth and Rat Fink embody a creative spirit that will live forever. --Jeff Shannon

I'm 50, and I grew up building the models and reading the magazines, always loved the cars, and when they become art, that is just more magic. I loved this production, it brought a lot of my scattered knowledge of Big Daddy into the whole story and very fun and modern production. I'm recommending it to anyone who is interested.
