Critics and controversy aside, <I>The Da Vinci Code</I> is a verifiable blockbuster. Combine the film's huge worldwide box-office take with over 100 million copies of Dan Brown's book sold, and The Da Vinci Code has clearly made the leap from pop-culture hit to a certifiable franchise. The leap for any story making the move from book to big screen, however, is always more perilous. In the case of The Da Vinci Code, the plot is concocted of such a preposterous formula of elements that you wouldn't envy screenwriter Akiva Goldsman, the man tasked with making this story filmable. The script follows Dan Brown's book as closely as possible while incorporating a few needed changes, including a better ending. And if you're like most of the world, by now you've read the book and know how it goes: while lecturing in Paris, noted Harvard Professor of Symbology Robert Langdon (Tom Hanks) is summoned to the Louvre by French police to help decipher a bizarre series of clues left at the scene of the murder of the chief curator. Enter Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou), gifted cryptologist. Neveu and Langdon team up to solve the mystery, and from there the story is propelled across Europe, ballooning into a modern-day mini-quest for the Holy Grail, where secret societies are discovered, codes are broken, and murderous albino monks are thwarted
oh, and alternative theories about the life of Christ and the beginnings of Christianity are presented too, of course. It's not the typical formula for a stock Hollywood thriller. In fact, taken solely as a mystery, the movie almost works--despite some gaping holes--mostly just because it keeps moving. Brown's greatest trick was to have the entire story take place in one day, so the action is forced to keep moving, despite some necessary pauses for exposition. As a screen couple, Hanks and Tautou are just fine together but not exactly memorable; meanwhile Sir Ian McKellen's scenery-chewing as pivotal character Sir Leigh Teabing is just what the film needed to keep it from taking itself too seriously. The whole thing is like a good roller-coaster ride: try not to think too much about it--just sit back and enjoy the trip. --Daniel Vancini

The DVD extras on a film as popular as The Da Vinci Code should be plentiful, and this version doesn't skimp. With over 90 minutes of special features, including ten behind-the-scenes featurettes, there's a lot here to explore beyond the film itself. The question is, is there anything new here that we haven't heard before, in all the hype, pseudo-documentaries, and controversy surrounding the movie, to make it worthwhile? For most viewers, the answer will be "yes." Essentially, if you like the movie, if you enjoyed the book, you will get a lot out of them.
Just as the movie is intended to make the book come to life, the DVD extras should make the film come to life by pointing the audience into the world of the filmmakers, connecting the dots between print and film, and for the most part they do just that. The extras here range from the typical look behind-the-scenes to more in-depth features on the supporting characters, the locations, and the <I>Mona Lisa</I> herself. "First Day on the Set with Ron Howard" features the director gushing about the opportunity to film in the Louvre and work with Tom Hanks again (the two worked together before on Splash and Apollo 13). It's a short piece that doesn't reveal much beyond making an attempt to share Howard's excitement (with the "Gee, I really loved working with him/her on this project" that you hear in every such featurette), but viewers might enjoy seeing how the stage was set up in the famous museum, down to the spike tape on the floor showing actors where to hit their marks. The Filmmaking Experience, Parts 1 and 2 further explores the creative and technical aspects of the filmmaking process. A Conversation with Dan Brown starts out feeling like a puff-piece (the man who wrote this book got started at age 5 with a story called The Giraffe, The Pig, and the Pants on Fire. "It was a thriller," he says.) and unfortunately it doesn't go very deep into much of anything of interest. But on the other hand, this isn't 60 Minutes here; it's intended to give viewers a better sense of the man behind the franchise, which it does. Much of the footage from this interview is sprinkled throughout some of the other featurettes. Meanwhile, the character behind the franchise, Robert Langdon, is examined in his own featurette, as is Sophie Neveu. The cool thing here is getting under the skin of the actors to see how they approached the characters, knowing that most of the movie-going public already has formed their own ideas about the characters from the book.
The most interesting extras are the featurettes that focus on the history behind the mystery. Or is it the mystery behind the history? Either way, the first one on the <I>Mona Lisa</I>, and the second featurette on the many codes and symbols that are hidden throughout the movie balance out the remainder of the extras nicely by demonstrating the sense of intrigue, mystery, and game-playing adventure that made The Da Vinci Code so popular in the first place. --Daniel Vancini

Description
Dan Brown's international bestseller comes alive in the film The Da Vinci Code, directed by Ron Howard with a screenplay by Akiva Goldsman. Join symbologist Robert Langdon (Academy Award® Winner Tom Hanks, 1993 Best Actor, Philadelphia, and 1994 Best Actor, Forrest Gump) and cryptologist Sophie Neveu (Audrey Tautou) in their heart-racing quest to solve a bizarre murder mystery that will take them from France to England - and behind the veil of a mysterious ancient society, where they discover a secret protected since the time of Christ. With first-rate performances by Sir Ian McKellen, Alfred Molina and Jean Reno, critics are calling The Da Vinci Code "involving" and "intriguing," "a first rate thriller."
Customer Reviews:
A good film and book........2007-06-12
I read the book on which this film is based before viewing the film. I was surprised that the film did, in fact, replicate the book.
There is some great acting in this film, & it does make the viewer think. Do I actually agree with the premise of the book and film? No.
This is not Tom Hanks' best film, but he did a good job of portraying the film's main character. I liked him better in films like "Forrest Gump" because these films truly show his versatility as an actor.
Even if you don't agree with its premise, I recommend that you read the book and then see this film.
The Da Vinci Code
The biggest secret of all: a cure for insomnia........2007-06-07
Tom Hanks is Robert Langdon, the walking bibliophile of ancient codes and symbols, who is implicated in the murder of one of the Louvre's curators, a man who himself is something of a mystery. Brought to the scene of the crime without being told that he's a suspect, Langdon is shocked to find the body positioned according to Da Vinci's "Vitruvian Man", and more shocked to learn that the victim assumed this position himself before dying - a sort of final coded message between two men with a love for codes. Warned of the suspicions surrounding him by Sophie Neveau (Audrey Tatou), the dead man's granddaughter, Langdon escapes and leads the police in a chase across France in a desperate gamble to learn the victim's last, greatest secret. Soon, Langdon's pursuers come to include a homicidal monk dispatched by a Bishop of the reactionary order of Opus Dei, and all events are shown to have been manipulated by a mysterious character known as "Teacher". As Langdon picks up clues, he begins to realize that the mystery may involve the legend of the "Holy Grail", and heads for the home of an old friend, Sir Lee Teabing, the foremost proponent of a particularly unique theory of Grail legend.
Even giving the movie the same allowances as the book, DVC is a horrible movie, slow, pedantic and full of red herrings that no sane moviegoer will fall for. The religious controversy surrounding DVC thinly masks the movie's two cardinal flaws - 1) that it takes itself way more seriously than it deserves (the world is full of distinct religions espousing wholly incompatible beliefs - are we to believe that an admittedly dramatic discovery on one of them will really change the rest of the world? Also, assuming the secret was uncovered, DVC never clears up how it would be proven); 2) it's boring! At over two hours (and boy, will you feel it!) the only secret uncovered is that it's possible to have both Ian McKellan and Tom Hanks in a movie lacking almost any energy. Hanks is serviceable as Langdon, Dan Brown's factotum of symbols nobody really cares about. KcKellen chews up the scenery as Teabing, but ultimately the pointlessness of his character overwhelms McKellen's presence - whether you buy into his theories or not depends largely on the same degree of faith as the religion that Teabing assails. The flick telegraphs its thrills - my wife and I were able to guess what would happen next, who would say what, etc... The novel excelled because skillful pacing kept the action from being overwhelmed by the hot air of its long theories.
The film plays down the novel's attacks on the Church for a more sustained atmosphere of religious antipathy (from disfavored apostles to Isaac Newton, if you've got a mind of your own, the Church hates and fears you, a bit of low-grade demagoguery that the script takes for granted). To add insult to injury, DVC treats the Church as irrelevant (despite their wealth and power, the clergy in DVC are relegated to being unwitting pawns of a higher, if more temporal power). But as I said, the story's attack on religion is itself a smokescreen hiding the fact that DVC is simply inert.
Cast Away this one.......2007-06-04
After hearing and reading all the fuss about this movie, I finally got to see it. Seems the fuss was about the subject matter and not the movie. Tom Hanks gave a mediocre performance at best, taking a back seat to the story I guess. The dots were connected too quickly and easily.
The movie was entertaining, but that was mostly because of the strong performances of Ian McKellen and Jean Reno.
I'm not much for conspiracy theories,so I'm sure I'll get blasted for my review but I have seen better told stories (regardless of the subject).
For some of Tom Hanks best see Cast Away. For some outstanding story telling see Strangers on a Train.
This movie makes for good Cable Fodder, but isn't one that will stand the test of time.
Suspensful and interesting and well acted!.......2007-06-04
Tom Hanks and the ensemble worked well together for this movie. A fast paced intellectual thriller that captures your interest all the way to the end. Wonderful scenes of Paris, etc. I thought the movie was great. Only one 'flaw', throughout the movie there were many night scenes that were too dark to see everything on screen. All in all the movie kept true to the book and that's a rarity. Just a few things were omitted from the book, but that's understandable. A great movie I highly recommend it for all.
This Movie Was Almost Great.......2007-06-03
I know that I'm probably the last American to see this film, but I'm sure mine won't be the last words written on this controversial subject. The film got pretty so-so reviews, which is surprising since Tom Hanks almost always delivers a very memorable film, but after seeing the film, I guess I can understand some of the reviews.
Speaking of Tom Hanks, I thought that he was less than sure-footed in this film which is unusual. At first I thought it was his portrayal of his character, but I don't think that was it entirely. In many moments of repose, he just seemed uncertain, etc.
The female lead was tremendous in the role, and she sailed through the movie as if it were all real, and I felt that the synergy between the two was great !
I enjoyed the angry driven stereotypical French detective, and really responsed to the bad guys, in the ways intented.
My conclusion is that this movie was almost great, and the combination of a bunch of little things, kept it from being great. Timing seemed off, I think that direction could have been tighter and ditto with editing, Tom was tenuous on a number of occasions, and the French detective's reaction to discovering that the truth about the hero seemed really understated, even for the French, and lost a ton of dramatic potential.
I enjoyed the subject matter, found it almost believable, and I suspect that some variation on that theme might be correct. I am pleased that the movie created so much controversy, because that has caused a lot of people to think about all of this, which can only be good.
I personally am going to watch it again, because I am curious to see how it feels to me, the second time around. I recommend this film.

<I>Flushed Away</I> is a rip-roaring nautical adventure with a twist: The heroes are a pair of rodents braving the sewers underneath London. Roddy (voiced by Hugh Jackman) is an upper-crust house-mouse who finds himself flushed into the subterranean sewers. Eager to return to his posh home, he enlists the help of a boat-captain rat named Rita (Kate Winslet), who has troubles of her own; namely the kingpin of the underworld, the Toad (Ian McKellen), and his henchmen including the French mercenary Le Frog (Jean Reno).
While technically <I>Flushed Away</I> could be considered part of the wave of celebrity-voiced, anthropomorphic-animal movies that hit in 2005-2006 (<I>Madagascar</I>, <I>Over the Hedge</I>, <I>The Wild</I>, etc.), it doesn't inspire the same sense of déjà vu. For one thing, its voice actors are less recognizable than the likes of Bruce Willis and Chris Rock. For another, its look is very distinctive. Like Nick Park's <I>Chicken Run</I> and <I>Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit</I>, it's a joint production of DreamWorks Animation and Aardman Features, and although Park isn't involved, it retains his trademark blocky look of clay animation. But animating the movie by computer rather than by hand allows for some eye-popping tableaux, such as floodwaters rushing through the sewers and an entire town of little animated characters. It's a crazy thrill ride loaded with inside jokes and enough crude humor to earn a PG rating, and the band of singing slugs is also a hoot. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>
<b>On the DVD</b>
It's no surprise that the singing slugs are the stars of the DVD's bonus features. They're featured in two music videos (less than a minute total), and in a 13-minute segment an Aardman animator builds a slug out of plasticine. (In contrast, the lesson on drawing Roddy is a mere two minutes.) A song jukebox jumps to 10 musical points in the film, though the non-slug background music isn't really worth the jump. On the human side, there are eight-minute featurettes on the music and the voices, a set-top game that is easier to control than most such featurettes (and easier to beat too), and a commentary track by directors David Bowers and Sam Fell in which they have a grand old time remembering their inside jokes and showering love on the Spike and Whitey characters. The DVD-ROM has access to 21 more online games. <I>--David Horiuchi</I>
<hr> <span class="h1"><strong>Fun Facts from Flushed Away</I></strong></span>
<ul>
In Tabitha's room, there are a variety of dolls from previous DreamWorks Animation films, including a Gromit and several bunnies from Wallace & Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit, an Alex the Lion from Madagascar, and a Dragon from Shrek.</li>
Many characters from past films make cameos in Flushed Away. For example, a Chicken Run chicken is on the second page of the Toad's scrapbook, Gromit's head is a pencil top in the Jammy Dodger, the penguin from Wallace and Gromit: The Wrong Trousers is on a stamp on the Jammy Dodger, and a poster of Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit is on the side of a bus in Kensington.</li>
There are officially 60 million rats in the UK. That's one rat for every person.
The various boats in the film are made up of flotsam and jetsam that rats could conceivably find in the sewer. <b>For the double decker bus:</b> Ice chest, retro flipping numbers alarm clock, bike lamp, buckle, oil drum, soup can, license plate, rope, plastic suitcase, jerry can. <b>For the mini cooper</b>: Soda can, battery, sardine can, butter knife, old lights.
Simulating the toilet water and making it look realistic proved to be a challenge. After much consideration, it was finally discovered that what was missing was caustics, or the use of light reflection off the bottom of the bowl. This was added and everyone was happy because they could finally get their mind out of the toilet. </li></ul><hr> </p> <span class="h1"><strong>Stills from <I>Flushed Away</I> (click for larger image)</strong></span> <table border="0" cellpadding="4" width="100%" cellspacing="4">

Product Description
Set on and beneath the streets of London, Flushed Away is the story of Roddy, an upper-crust "society mouse," who is rather rudely evicted from his Kensington flat when he is flushed down into Ratropolis, the bustling sewer world found under London's streets. There, he meets Rita, an enterprising scavenger who works the sewers in her faithful boat, the Jammy Dodger. Together they must navigate their way through a busy city filled with dangers for any mouse, including terrifying rapids, treacherous whirlpools and, most of all, the villainous Toad and his hench-rats Spike and Whitey. Though completely out of his element at first, the privileged Roddy finds himself an unlikely hero when he learns that Ratropolis is in danger from the world above.
Customer Reviews:
Great Characters.......2007-06-20
While I have never enjoyed the Aardman style of animation (I find the claymation sort of "disturbing"), I really liked this movie. The story is original and the characters are engaging. My kids won't sit through a Wallace & Gromit movie, but they love Flushed Away.
Flushed Away .......2007-06-11
Very cute movie that the entire family will enjoy. The little worm things are cute with the noises they make. Had a lot of laughs throughout the entire movie. I would highly recommend.
A cute, odd film with a certain spark of British charm.......2007-06-08
Ok...er...bear with me people.
I never planned on seeing this movie. I hate these overdone CGI animal adventure movies. Doogal. Barnyard. Over the flippin' hedge. Happy Feet (though that one was ok). Besides crappy romantic comedies, they're the most overdone film genre of all-time.
But, as it so happens, I found myself on a bus to Six Flags in Massachusetts one day as part of a college reunion my dad was in (there was a program for the kids, and our group, age 15-17, was going to Six Flags one day), and they were showing this film, "Flushed Away," on the bus.
Meh. I had nothing better to do. Sleep? I just woke up like a minute and a half ago, it was 9:00 in the morning. Study for my exam I was taking off-campus on Saturday? Yeah, right. Watch "Flushed Away" for no apparent reason whatsoever? Sounds like a plan!
Ok, so basically, "Flushed Away" is about this lonely (but almost scarily elated) rat named Roddy who gets flushed down the loo one day and discovers a huge underworld city in the sewers of London where other rats live. He meets this girl scavenger rat named Rita who looks for treasures in the sewers and he keeps ruining things for her on her boat...thus Rita gets a huge sense of resentment for this poor rat. Roddy needs to get back to Kensington (hehe, I love that place) where he lives...but has no plan of doing so. Rita just so happens to have a dilemma as well: she has this quarrel with a big toad named...er...the Toad who stole a ruby from her that was going to make her poor family wealthy again. Roddy agrees to help Rita get the ruby back in return for her help in getting him back to the land "up top." (Kensington)
As you can see from my basic plot summary, "Flushed Away" is an odd film. It has some fantastic voice talent, though, starring Hugh Jackman, Kate Winslet, Ian McKellen, and Bill Nighy. It also is pretty funny with tons of British humour (oh, did I mention the evil Toad is trying to rig all the toilets in London to suck the people in during the half-time break at the World Cup? hehe ) and it reminded me immensely of Nick Park's brilliant "Wallace and Grommit" series. There are references to tons of other adult movies that only we would get. The soundtrack is fantastic as well with some very good tunes, including a track by The Dandy Warhols.
Overall--funny, entertaining, and enjoyable, but probably not worth seeing again. It kind of struck me as one of the kids' animated films that didn't exactly work for me, and (most of them) usually do. Ok for one-time viewing.
3-Stars
Good, but not up to Aardman's highest standards..........2007-06-04
Admittedly, those standards are 'way above anyone else's... I chuckled a few times in this, whereas "Chicken Run" had me in tears. It has the usual Aardman trademark of so many verbal and sight gags and references to other films flung at you that you need several viewings to get them all (and I'd imagine that a non-British audience night not get them all). Ian McKellen's megalomaniac frog was wonderful, as was Jean Reno's "Le Frog", but the singing slugs were the best. Still worth a view (and the kids will love it).

World War I aviation action gets an impressive digital upgrade in Flyboys, a welcome addition to the "dogfight" sub-genre that includes such previous war-in-the-air films like Hell's Angels, Wings, and The Blue Max. While those earlier films had the advantage of real and genuinely dangerous flight scenes (resulting, in some cases, in fatal accidents during production), Flyboys takes full (and safe) advantage of the digital revolution, with intensely photo-realistic recreations of WWI aircraft, authentic period structures, and CGI environments requiring a total of 850 digital effects shots, resulting in an abundance of amazing images, many of them virtually indistinguishable from reality. Unfortunately, the film's technical achievement is more impressive than its screenplay, which conventionally and predictably tells the fact-based story, set in France in 1916, of the daring young pilots of the Lafayette Escadrille, a pioneering French air-combat unit that welcomed American enlistees prior to the United States' entry into the war.</p>
There's a familiar cliché to match every thrilling scene of aerial combat, but director Tony Bill manages to keep it all interesting, from the romance between a young American maverick (James Franco) and a pretty French girl (newcomer Jennifer Decker) to the exciting action in the air, which includes a stock variety of heroes (many of them composites of real-life WWI pilots) and an intimidating villain known only as "The Black Falcon," whose Fokker Dr-1 triplane (one of many in the film) recalls the exploits of German "ace of aces" Manfred von Richtofen, the dreaded "Red Baron" of legend. With impeccable production values that will impress even the most nit-picking aviation buffs, Flyboys (like Superman Returns and Apocalypto, also released in 2006) was also one of the first feature films to be shot with Panavision's state-of-the-art Genesis digital cameras, resulting in beautiful images that meet or exceed the visual nuance of film. Flyboys also benefits from painstaking attention to physical detail, making it easier to forgive its shortcomings as a generic and formulaic slice of romanticized history. So while some viewers may have wished for a more realistic and grown-up depiction of the Lafayette Escadrille, it's safe to say that Flyboys will be thrilling its target audience for many years to come. --Jeff Shannon</p>

Not bad if you ignore the facts........2007-06-18
I confess I was entertained by the movie -in those moments when I wasn't screaming at the TV. Some of the historical inaccuracies were so glaring that even for a work of fiction it was hard to swallow. At the beginning the movie states that 9 million would eventually die in WWI - soliders perhaps. That total is nowhere complete if you add in the civillian dead. A good number of which would have come from the area in which the characters were fighting. The Verdun front was a wasteland for miles - towns were obliterated from the shelling - the area around the fronts were ruined for not years but decades. No cheery farmhouse with well-fed children, no trees or plowed fields visible from the air, nothing but death and destruction for miles and miles. Trench warfare was not confined to a thin sliver. Though the front itself moved only yards the shelling and death reigned over an extended area. There are villages in the area that never returned and if you drive over the battlefield even now 90 years later as I did, you can still see the craters and hills caused by the shelling. The aviators were above the day to day merciless killing field but they were not untouched by it. My biggest problem with the film was the complete santization of WWI. The northern part of France and southern Belgium were devasted far more thoroughly than even Germany in WWII. It was truely hell on earth. Other reviewers have addresed the inaccuracies in the planes used - do not get me started on the mechanized land transportation. Tanks were only beginning to be developed and would not have been used as shown - also correct me if I am wrong but the Germans had already crossed the Meuse River much earlier in the War. At this point in time they would have been drive back - probably by Black Jack Pershing. The producers could have spent a bit more money on some historical research and less on their computer graphics. They did not get their money's worth there either. As it was, I could never tell who was who during the arial combat sequences. I would have sworn one fellow was dead only to have him reappear later in the movie. I did enjoy the camaraderie and would have like to see more of the unit as a whole.
pretty good wwi movie.......2007-06-14
they don't bother to make many wwi movies anymore, so i was excited to see this one. the script is admittedly not very good, and the performances were kind of lame but they did not have good dialogue to work with. despite this i still enjoyed watching the movie as the combat sequences were very very realistic and had wonderful sound. it is great to finally see combat the way it probably really happened and feel adrenalin pumping. i thought that one scene in the howard hughes movie with decaprio got this across, and this movie continues what that scene suggested. too bad whoever wrote the script was not very smart or this could have been a classic.
Fly Boys Lafayette Escadrille, movie for Plane lovers!!.......2007-06-01
The "experts" always!! This movie is enjoyable, the air battle scenes are very well done, story well told,it is for planes lovers not for history or movie "experts",the dogfights are fantastic!!
I RECOMMEND for any plane Lover!!
For the History "experts",Marie-Joseph-Paul-Yves-Roch-Gilbert du Motier, formerly the Marquis de La Fayette (or Lafayette) (September 6, 1757-May 20, 1834) was a former French aristocrat and military officer who participated in both the American and French revolutions. He permanently renounced the title "Marquis" before the French National Assembly in June, 1790.)Lafayette served in the American War of Independence both as a general and as a diplomat, serving entirely without pay in both roles.
Movies are for Entertainment!!
I highly recommend this movie.
fly boys.......2007-05-29
i haven't watched this movie. it was purchased for a christmas present. i heard about this movie on american family radio and they gave it wonderfuly reviews. my brother is ex-military and loves these types of movie. since afr gave them a wonderful review, i thought this would be something that he would enjoy.
very enjoyable movie.......2007-05-28
i was moved throughout. very touching in many places, about many things (racism, heroism, family relationships, the cost of 'useless' war, etc.) i have to say though, that when the main character went to see his new 'girlfriend Lucienne, who is 'valiantly looking after her dead sister's children' (as one review stated) i was appalled that she went up in the airplane with her boyfriend, leaving all 3 small children down on the ground waving. crashes were very common in those days. imagie the trauma if those kids, who had already lost their parents, watched their aunt die and there was no other family to raise them. But overall, it was great!

Meg Ryan emerges bloodied but unbowed from this botched comedy by Lawrence Kasdan (<I>The Big Chill</I>). Ryan plays a woman whose fiancé (Timothy Hutton) leaves her for a Parisian beauty. She jets over to the City of Lights to fight for her man, but an incapacitating fear of flying forces her to seek help from a fellow passenger, a French thief played by Kevin Kline, who then tutors her in the ways of getting her beau back. Kasdan seems incapable of pacing the story, let alone getting a firm grip on its comic tone and intentions. The production sputters and regroups and stalls repeatedly, forcing Ryan, particularly, to find the boundaries of her own screwball performance. --Tom Keogh
Description
Meg Ryan ("Sleepless in Seattle") and Kevin Kline ("Dave") star in this bouncy romantic comedy about life, love and larceny. When her fiancé is smitten by a beautiful Frenchwoman, Kate (Ryan) flies to Paris determined to win him back. However, nothing prepares her for Luc (Kline), a cunning sexy Frenchman with a gift for gab and a fondness for thievery. A self-proclaimed expert on affairs of the heart, Luc promises to help Kate win back her man. But one star-crossed misadventure after another sweeps them across France, ultimately changing them in ways they never dreamed possible.

Lots of fun.......2007-06-16
The more I watch this film, the more I love it. It's funny, well-paced and Meg and Kevin (as always) are great!
All Time Favorite Girly Movie!.......2007-04-04
My college roommates and I watched the VHS version of this movie so many times we wore the tape out. Bad day at the internship, boyfriend broke up with you, need a good movie to nap to while skipping class...this is your movie! I was so happy to find it on Amazon and even happier that it arrived so quickly and in brand new condition!
Comical Romance.......2007-03-21
I just love this movie. I have seen it at least 10 times if not more and it is one that i just have not tired of. It's a great blend of comedy and romance. Meg Ryan and Kevin Klien make an interesting couple and the scattering of other French and Euro charters makes this a must have for my little library of romance movies.
One of the best performances by these actors.......2007-03-19
Wow, great movie! Keeps you laughing and brings a few tears as well. I think the actors do a great job and give one of their best and most mature performances ever.
Love is a Funny Thing.......2007-03-18
The movie is so very funny. You will laugh constantly. You never know what is going to happen next. It is one con after another. It reminds you that you can find love when you aren't looking.

Still worth a view (and the kids will love it).
movie review.......2007-06-02
This was a gift for a family taking a long road trip. The movie amused them

Unfortunately, the film's technical achievement is more impressive than its screenplay, which conventionally and predictably tells the fact-based story, set in France in 1916, of the daring young pilots of the Lafayette Escadrille, a pioneering French air-combat unit that welcomed American enlistees prior to the United States' entry into the war.
--Jeff Shannon

Perfect Movie! Perfect High Definition Quality on Blu-ray!.......2007-06-08
Unlike the 20 some movie that I watched on Blu-ray with either mediocre picture quality or picture freezing problem or grainy picture or too dark transfer--This one sets a new higher standard for Blu-ray!
Movie: Great story, beautiful colors, incredible cinematography!
Video: Just perfect (film like quality is finally achieved!)
Audio: Excellent.
I have no complaints-great movie for the whole family! Must own!
Well Worth Watching.......2007-04-23
Like the movies "Titanic" and "The Great Escape", This is a story taking place during a historic event with characters that are a composit of some of the real people involved.
It's WWI and the US has not yet entered the war. American volunteers are trained in France to fly and fight the war. They become the "Lafayette Escadrille". This movie covers their training, flying/fighting, squadron bonding and off duty time.
This is no documentary. It is a gripping story of the Americans who flew for the French combined with excellent air combat sequences. Better in the Blu-Ray Disc version. It will leave you wanting to run it again and again. Good photography, good story, good sound/special effects, good characters, . . . can you tell I thoroughly enjoyed it? Be sure to watch the special features, see how the combat footage was filmed.
Those who have seen "The DaVinci Code" will recognize Jean Reno as the squadron commander.
Flyboys [ Blu-Ray ].......2007-03-13
The disc was send in fast time, and made it in perfect shape.Info was great between Amazon and me,Thanks for a great job well done.
Quite an expierence.......2007-03-12
This really is a must see blue ray disc. I read a lot of reviews before getting and must say I see what all the excitement was about. Watching this movie on blue ray is a treat in itself. The movie was okay but the specail effects and photography really made it an exciting expierence.
Outstanding in every way........2007-02-09
I bought this one looking for a good historical action drama with good effects. Flyboys far exceeded my expectations. I am familiar with the Lafayette Esquadrille from history class and old movies. The movie stayed pretty close to the truth.
The characters were solid, well developed and believable. The sets and settings were on the money. Unique historical details (like use of landing gear in combat) were accurate (with two big intentional exceptations). The arial dog fights were fantastic.
Special effects were on par if not better than those in 'Pearl Harbor'. Motion Capture of actual arial stunts made a huge difference.
Extra features were some of the best I've seen.

A hit in Europe but a flop in the U.S.--where it was trimmed, rescored, and given a new ending--Luc Besson's <I>The Big Blue</I> has endured as a minor cult classic for its gorgeous photography (both on land and underwater) and dreamy ambiance. Jean-Marc Barr is a sweet and sensitive but passive presence as Jacques, a diver with a unique connection to the sea. He has the astounding ability to slow his heartbeat and his circulation on deep dives, "a phenomenon that's only been observed in whales and dolphins
until now," remarks one scientist. Kooky New York insurance adjuster Joanna (Rosanna Arquette at her most delightfully flustered and endearingly sexy best) melts after falling into his innocent baby blues, and she follows him to Italy, where he's continuing a lifelong competition with boyhood rival Enzo (Jean Reno in a performance both comic and touching).
Besson's first English-language production looks more European than Hollywood, and it suffers from a tin ear for the language. At times it feels more like an IMAX undersea documentary than a drama about free divers, but the lush and lovely images create a fairy tale dimension to Jacques's story, a veritable <I>Little Merman</I>. More dolphin than man, he's so torn between earthly love and aquatic paradise that even his dreams call him to the sea (in a sequence more eloquent than any speech).
Besson has expanded the film by 50 minutes for his director's cut, which adds little story but slows the contemplative pace until it practically floats in time, and has restored Eric Serra's synthesizer-heavy score, a slice of 1980s pop that at times borders on disco kitsch. Most importantly, he has restored his original ending, which echoes the fairy tale he tells Joanna earlier in the film and leaves the story floating in the inky blackness of ambiguity. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

Great movie!.......2007-04-11
What can I say, the scenery and the music just makes this movie wonderful!
Big Blue.......2007-03-22
One of those films which takes you away from your humdrum life and makes you feel that you are actually in the film.
The acting and photography are fantastic, it is a very long film but well worth watching.
Fantastic Movie.......2007-03-13
I have seen the other version of the big blue and there was alot of empty spaces in it key parts of the movie that made it hard to understand. But the directors cut filled in those empty spaces and made those scenes they left out more understandable. The directors cut is a much better version of the movie and if you have never seen this movie before I recommend you see this version first. The music was much better in the first version I do have to say that. It was more mysterious and comforting in the other version this one was to upbeat it was more like disco to me. I loved the characters Jean Reno is one of my favorite actors. Im not sure why Jean Marc Barr's career didnt take off I thought he was wonderful in this movie.Rosanna Arquette well she was ok but I think they could have casted her part a lot better with someone else. All she did in this movie was giggle and scream to the top of her lungs. She was like listening to fingers nails going down a chalk board. My appologies to all the Rosanna Arquette fans I didnt mean to offend. It was a great movie and throughly enjoyed it and would highly recommend it to anyone. I would give it a 5 plus.
The movie of a generation...a trip to heaven.......2007-02-05
In Europe we consider this movie " the movie of a generation"...when it came out, it stayed in theater something like 4 or 5 month !! And it came out a second time with a longer version. In both versions we always had the same ending...so I'm pretty much disappointed (but not surprised) to read that in US you had a kind of "happy ending".
Anyway, the music scored by Eric Serra, the man who did the soundtrack from every Besson movies by the way, is magnificent. This movie ranks in my top five, the best french movie in my opinion. To see this movie in a theater is one of the most beautiful experience...!
If you like Luc Besson, there's actually two movies you MUST get : "SUBWAY" and "NIKITA" (not the one with Bridget Fonda...but with Anne Parrillaud).
A truly powerful and moving film.......2007-02-01
I just finished watching 'The Big Blue--directors cut' and I am really glad that I did. I honestly feel that it has influenced me on a deeper level, in a way that almost no other film has. I now own the DVD and I plan to watch it at least several more times in the next year or so. I want you to understand this:--this movie is meant to have a profound spiritual and existential theme to it. It is for this reason that I was very moved and inspired by it. If you are intrested in watching a wonderful yet simple movie, with great cinematography and great acting and writing (in my opinion), and a film which has a subtle, yet very profound spiritual and existential theme to it, then I highly recommend watching 'The Big Blue--directors cut'. On a personal note, I really identified with the main character Jacque. Thankyou for your time....-N

Product Description
Gary Oldman, Jean Reno, Natalie Portman and Danny Aiello star in LEON: THE PROFESSIONAL, a go-for-broke thriller about a professional assassin whose work becomes dangerously personal. Calling himself a "cleaner", the mysterious Leon (Reno) is New York's top hitman. When his next-door neighbors are murdered, Leon becomes the unwilling guardian of the family's sole survivor - 12-year-old Mathilda, but Mathilda doesn't just want protection; she wants revenge. Training her in the deadly tricks of his trade, Leon helps her track the psychotic agent (Oldman) who murdered her family.

Luc Besson (The Fifth Element) made his American directorial debut with this stylized thriller about a French hit man (Jean Reno) who takes in an American girl (Natalie Portman) being pursued by a corrupt killer cop (Gary Oldman). Oldman is a little more unhinged than he should be, but there is something genuinely irresistible about the story line and the relationship between Reno and Portman. Rather than cave in to the cookie-cutter look and feel of American action pictures, Besson brings a bit of his glossy style from French hits <I>La Femme Nikita and Subway to the production, and the results are refreshing even if the bullets and explosions are awfully familiar. --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Most convincing love story ever........2007-06-22
"I know what I want to do with the rest of my life. I want to be an assassin. Like you." Spoken by a little [..]Natalie Portman, which becomes the earmark of my early attentions that this movie was more than your run of the mill movie. In fact, Natalie Portman may not have been the focus of this film but every ounce of her characterization of Mathilda stood out as owning this films reputation as an underground international hit. I can't give justice to the power she releases at the explosive ending with Leon that comes straight from some everyone-dies-Scorsese-mob-ending. Her invoking sobs are stomach clutching and her innate control is so fantastic it's frighteningly genius. It's almost impossible for me to discover the means for her to of have created such a complete character with such genuine passion when I consider the real life pressures such as the presence of people and running camera's absorbing every nuance of her countenance and paired against such dominating presence as Jean Reno and Gary Oldman no less! At film ending, I felt obligated beyond an audiance member, as if some member in an important film jury. Obligated to award that outstanding performance. Because in the movie business, audiences (unlike sports spectators who support having the best of athlets)do not reward the best of movie making. They rush to see movies like spider man 3, and oceans and reward them with unbelievable revenues that executives celebrate over. This under the radar revenge film with a bizarrly genius child actor was more than just a klatch of hollywood moments, it was a delicate lingo of sexual undertones. It was a 'becoming of age'-ness, and metamorphisized rebirth. This child was fantastic and worth droves of applause. She literally and metaphorically walks away from the hollywood glitch and glamour at some point. Away from the eye catching fire, and explosions. The throngs of police extra's, and of the cliche final showdown. She walks away as a child would, but with the aged spirit of a master actress, spliting the story in no better way for me into that scence of departure. One the one side is Leon, the revenge gun for hire story, and then the other of a precious girl coming of age under extraordinary circumstances which parallels the slave of Leon's rebirth from soulessness. "Is it always this hard?" She asks Leon with blood on her face. And as if questioning the validity of her own living, sweeps the blood with her hand and stares at it. "No." Exclaims Leon without emotion. Planted behind Leon's mirrory glasses at that moment is his rebirth.
The Professional.......2007-06-12
Excellent movie now a classic never get sick of watching, a must have for all movie buffs !
The Professional.......2007-06-05
This is a fantastic movie. Jean Reno is absolutely marvelous as the hit man who takes in an orphaned young girl (Natalie Portman) after a crooked DEA agent (Gary Oldman) kills off her entire family. Reno brings depth, sensitivity and a true comedic flair to the character. Natalie Portman is, naturally, adorable and shows true skill in the role. And Gary Oldman? He's just brilliant. The best - that is the foulest, the most despicable - villain there ever was. You've just got to see this movie! The Professional
Unbelievably ridiculous but try not and be emotinally attached.......2007-06-03
Here is the rare film that combines a ridiculous storyline with a fabulous cast, great overacting, action, tenderness, angst and pathos and creates a winner you can't take your eyes, ears, heart or attention from. It will have you rooting for a serial killer who is teaching a 12-year-old the tricks of the trade. No kidding!
Jean Reno, who has probably never given a poor performance, is perfectly cast as an illiterate killer for hire. When Natalie Portman's family -- which lives in his building -- is murdered by bad cop-cocaine dealer Gary Oldman and crew, not yet teenager Portman survives and takes up housekeeping with the illiterate neighbor, a witness to the murders that is a full-time contractor to restaranteur Danny Aiello, playing the kind of gritty New York role that's made him famous.
You've probably already figured out this movie contains a lot of profanity, killing, bloodletting, foul play, and good guy-bad guy technique that's typical in this kind of urban drug-induced "police" drama. What you haven't figured out -- and what you won't until you see this film -- is the affectionate relationship it creates between older than her years but still youthful Portman and her new father figure and the way this relationship will addict you to this film.
Their relationship is about as connective as that torch you still carry for the high school sweetheart that got away. It sits beneath the surface eating up emotional bandwidth and retaining a place in your shattered psyche. The relationship between Portman and Reno (pronounced renn-Oh, not like the city in Nevada) will do the same thing to you.
I had no idea this movie, now 13 years of age, had all this going for it. It's a film that catches you unprepared. You want to see all the killing and be neutralized by its brutality. Yet this tender relationship between two down and out figures draws you in like a wet kitten at your front door whose mother was just run over by a car in the street. It melts your heart. Meanwhile, Gary Oldman is the [erfect foil, the epitome of evil. He gets his later in a memorable scene with our hero, Reno.
You have all this to look forward to as many times as you want by buying, renting, or borrowing this wonderful movie. My advice is to get on with it.
Very Good Movie.......2007-05-30
This version of Leon: The Professional is dead on perfect. The picture and audio quality is top notch. There are some nice bonus features thrown in too. Great acting by Reno, Portman, and Oldman. The extended scenes give you an even deeper look into Mathilda's training and her love for Leon. I highly recommend this DVD!
