Description
In 1870, when white men and Indians are fighting bitterly, Tom Jeffords (Stewart) strongly believes the Apaches are treated unfairly. After befriending their leader Cochise (Jeff Chandler) and arranging a truce, he is called upon by a U.S. Army general to negotiate a government peace treaty. Though he fulfills his mission, Jeffords soon experiences great tragedy when he, his Indian wife (Debra Paget) and good friend Cochise become targets of a renegade ambush.
Customer Reviews:
Broken Arrow - James Stewart.......2007-06-17
James Stewart and Jeff Chandler have fine performances in thie 1958 Western. Good portrayal of the American Indians. This production was nominated for three Academy Awards, "damn good western" with plenty of action. Good performance by Debra Paget who plays the part of an American Indian woman. This is a Ten (10) excellent.
Realistic Western from the 50's!.......2007-06-08
This really is a terrific Western! The story you probably know by now, what you may not know is the great DVD tranfer, great color, and great Sedona Ariz. filming locations!
Jimmy Stewart starting doing westerns in 1950 with Winchester 73', a black and white film and a classic. Broken Arrow was his second entry and 5 more followed in the 1950's. But none were to top Broken Arrow. Or Winchester 73'!
Not only is the story very solid, fiction based on real events and people, but all the actors casting is flawless! Will Geer, an emotionally hurt settler, Debra Paget at 17 looking like a Indian instead of a young startlet, and Jeff Chandler as Cochise in a very believable good performance. Mabye his best!
And make sure to check out Jay Silverheels in the role of Geronimo, a top notch performance and I think biggest speaking part of anything he'd ever been in, including the Lone Ranger series. When he defies Cochise to follow the peace trail, his emotion is so powerful that it jumps off the screen. A truly great moment in the film. I had to replay that scene many times because I liked it so much!
I'm proud to place this among my Western Collection of DVDs!
One of the Absolute Best.......2007-06-07
From time to time on the net I come across these ever-present lists where someone is sounding off about what they say are the "best" of such and so . Frequently I see "best westerns" or "best war movie" lists and find myself laughing out loud when one of these things omits something universally acknowledged to be a Classic. When that happens you know you're dealing with a relative "newbie" in the world whose exposure to genre cinema isn't nearly as expansive as they think it is. War Movie lists that leave off "Sergeant York" (out of sight for along time) come to mind. So do "Best Westerns" lists that ignore "Broken Arrow" (another hard to find one for quite a while). This film is a treasure.
To all who think "Broken Arrow" is a John Travolta/Christian Slater military action thriller, I've got news for you: Travolta/Slater is just an "ehhh" popcorn programmer that happens to LIFT the title of one of the
most admired, acclaimed, respected, and loved westerns of all time; one that belongs up there with "The Searchers" , "Fort Apache", and others in the category of "the greatest".
Released in 1950, this Delmer Daves film tells the true (with very little ...and, even then, only minor...fictionalization) story of ex-Army officer Tom Jeffords and his early-1870s interactions with the great Apache warrior Cochise; a relationship that led to a major degree of peace in Arizona in the long run. It is a tale well written, well told, and beautifully photographed. Nominated for several Oscars and Golden Globe Awards, it won the Golden Globe for best screenplay.
Shot in magnificent locations in Sedona and Flagstaff, Arizona, and Lone Pine, California, the scenics are just gorgeous and the color cinematography absolutely superb.
The cast is fabulous as well. Jimmy Stewart turns in a great performance as Jeffords (gee, what a surprise! Stewart ALWAYS delivers!) but the performance to watch is Jeff Chandler as Cochise. It is awesome and well worthy of the Oscar nomination he received for it. To those unfamiliar with Jeff Chandler , he was a VERY popular he-man (like Duke Wayne or Robert Mitchum) actor of the fifties who possessed a facial bone structure like carved granite and a head of thick, prematurely grey hair. This was a guy born to play in westerns and private detective thrillers.
Chandler was on his way towards icon status when he died unexpectedly much before his time. He lives on here as Cochise, though, and this is not a bad legacy to leave behind.
Also here is one of the greatest acting beauties of the 50s, the breathtakingly beautiful Debra Paget. Paget could hold a male audience spellbound and get them all agitated when directors would kill her off ,as in "Broken Arrow", and, when they had her jump into a volcano as a self-sacrifice in the 2nd version of "Bird of Paradise" ( I remember yelling "Noooooooooo!" when I first saw that on tv years ago).
Many familiar character actors turn up here, among them Iron Eyes Cody and Arthur Hunnicutt. Hunnicutt, bearded and carrying a bugle, would, some eighteen years later, appear as "Bull" with Duke Wayne and Bob Mitchum in Howard Hawks' "El Dorado". Here he is "Milt Duffield" a friend of Tom Jeffords.
Also making a splash in "Broken Arrow" is Mohawk character actor Harold J. Smith, playing Cochise's nemesis, Geronimo. Don't know him? SURE you do. You just know him as Jay Silverheels, and, at the same time he was playing hard-edged bad boy Geronimo for 20th Century Fox, he was off
also playing good guy Tonto with Clayton Moore's Lone Ranger for George Trendle.
All these elements combine here to make for a wonderful movie, western or otherwise.
It would also be interesting to note that this film has an affiliation with John Ford's "Fort Apache" in that, in "FA", Henry Fonda's unscrupulous "Col.Thursday" uses John Wayne's "Capt. York" character to deceive Cochise into a parley where he insults him (to Wayne's horror and disgust) and tries to capture his band. Fonda "gets his" because of this, deservedly so. One could almost watch "Fort Apache" and then "Broken Arrow" one right after the other and get a sense of this chief and his people...and understand that, in order to have any common ground with him, you did not try to trick him, con him, or lie to him. You did so at your peril.
One might also note that the popularity of this film carried over into a t.v. show in the fifties. The t.v. "Broken Arrow" starred John Lupton as Jeffords and Michael Ansara as Cochise. It featured mainly "keeping the peace" and "countering Geronimo" type stories.
Again, this one is real keeper. Rent it, buy it, watch it. You won't be sorry in the least. I am very glad its available again.
One of the best westerns about the American Indians of all time!.......2007-05-29
This film gives the best multilateral view of the American Indians versus the American white settlers than any Western genre of film I have seen. The story behind this film is a type of parable that can really be applied to any inter-racial or -ethnic conflict of any kind. It really states how we, regardless of race, religion, color, or ethnic background, can unite and work together to accomplish peace through increased efforts to bring about mutual understanding and trust. It is moving story of what "real" diplomacy is all about and the surrendering of one's own personal ambitions, prejudices, or fears to bring about the greater good of the whole. Too often we judge an entire group of people by a few bad men found among them and allow that to be the catalyst in forming our opinions or sentiments regarding another race or group of people. This story shows how there are good and bad among all people and that conditions of peace and friendship should not be based on the few "bad apples" that so often spoil those relationships with other peoples, races and nations by our holding up those few as being respresentative of an entire people or nation. It is a story that would serve all of us well today in a world filled with so much of hate, violence, prejudice, and mistrust. It also does much to tell the story of how one person, or small group of people, through their own personal efforts and sacrifice can do a great deal to help make the world a better place for everyone concerned. It really stirs consideration of how we can all unite together regardless of our backgrounds to overcome the real enemy in our midst.
Paying a High Price for Peace!.......2006-12-05
I've seen "Broken Arrow" (1950) when I was just a kid. The power of the images of this film remained in the back of my mind. In the near past a collection of the best Far West movies was edited in Argentina. This was the first title I run to buy. I wasn't disappointed with what I found.
It is one of the first films, if not the first, to show common human traits in both Native Americans and Pioneer Americans. Both are shown alternatively as brave, cruel, ruthless, honorable, truthful, and wicked. It shows a true kaleidoscopic round of basic human attitudes.
James Stewart impersonates Tom Jeffords (1832-1914) a historical character, known for opening the postal trail thru Apache's territory. This story is shown in the movie, with the logical and expected changes that a commercial product implies.
Nevertheless it depicts the relationship of trust developed between Cochise (1805-1874) the great Apache leader, fleshed outstandingly by Jeff Chandler, and Jeffords. They represent the better of two different worlds and work together to give peace a chance (as Lennon said). Peace is not an easy goal to reach; both of them had to pay a high price in order to obtain it.
A very young and beautiful Debra Paget, playing the role of Morningstar, contributes to give the romantic accent to the film.
There is enough action for the epic lovers, a very good photography in Technicolor and a solid script to backup the story.
One more thing, the Apache characters are, mostly, performed by Native American actors, contributing to make the story more credible.
I think this movie deserves, in justice, to be called a classic. Enjoy it!!!.

Description
After 25 chart-topping hits, the singing star becomes a movie star! George Strait makes his film debut in an entertaining look into the heart and soul of country music from Young Guns director Christopher Cain. <P>Superstar Dusty Chandler (Strait) is tired of the smoke, the strobe lights and the overmiked sound of his arena spectaculars. One night, something snaps. "I'm just going to take a little walk," Dusty says as he walks out of the empty hall, ditching his beard, ponytail - and temporarily, his career - to reclaim his down-home country roots. But his manager (Leslie Ann Warren) retaliates: a stand-in (Kyle Chandler) lip-synchs his songs in concert. And a romance with a lovely rancher (Isabel Glasser) is on again, off again like a rodeo cowboy. The simple life can be complex, but it's nothing a revitalized country boy can't handle!

A complete lack of imagination is what qualifies this as a B movie. Thankfully, this snowy adventure about a boy and his dogs is charming enough to entice the kiddies. Charismatic MacKenzie Astin plays a teenager trying to save the family farm by entering a 522-mile sled-dog marathon. Except for Astin, the lusciously scenic background has more depth than most of the characters. This is so predictable you could take a nap and miss nothing except a few rousing scenes in the 1917 Winnipeg-to-St.-Paul sled race. Although this is visually more appealing than most family fare, one wishes more attention had been paid to the script. <I>--Rochelle O'Gorman</I>

Iron Will This by far..is a Great rugged outdoor type film!! lots of snow Scenes heart pounding action all the ..way!
I personally loved this ..Movie Dog sledding at its ..Best.....
IRON WILL.......2007-05-12
It is very refreshing to watch a movie that is both entertaining and heart tugging. I love animals or movies that show interaction between animals and humans with a personal relationship. This movie did a wonderful job that showed there is communication between the two. There is no such thing that animals are dumb or do not have sense of reasoning or acting or reacting. This is a classic example of just this. Thank you.
Iron Will.......2007-04-11
Great movie.....We watch it again every year or so and always enjoy it. Excellent family entertainment.
Iron Will Video.......2007-03-31
Iron Will (Clam)
During 4 weeks of fine snow, my grade 6 class often had "dog" sled races for phys-ed, as the teamwork warm-up for tobogganing. They loved it and were eager to learn about dog sled races; the Iditarod and others. It even integrated into our unit on Native peoples. As a finale, when the snow was fast disappearing we watched Iron Will. They were impressed with the determination and optimism that Will carried throughout the challenge.
Classic Film.......2007-03-27
This is one of my favorite movies of all time. Not only is it a compelling and inspiring tale, the viewer develops a bond with the actors and the dogs (I love Gus to this day). It's a great movie to watch with the family.

Lean, lanky Lee Horsley (TV's <I>Matt Houston</I>) is hardly the iconic image of a medieval warrior, but in this cheesy <I>Conan the Barbarian</I> knockoff he makes his swaggering, mercenary Talon a genial smart aleck of a barbarian hero. The plot is pure pulp cliché: evil Cromwell (Richard Lynch) raises a demon to conquer a peaceful kingdom, kill the rulers, and imprison the royal heirs, and the son of a murdered patriot returns to take his righteous vengeance with a projectile-loaded, three-bladed sword. First-time director Albert Pyun apprenticed under Akira Kurosawa and brings with him an eye for handsome images and a fluid sense of action that helps overcome B-movie dialogue ("Unlock this door, wench, and leave that to us!"), scenery-chewing performances, and bargain-basement budget. In one fight sequence a guard punches a rock wall--and dents it! Kathleen Beller (the dark-eyed beauty of <I>The Betsy</I>) is the rebel princess who enlists Talon to the cause, <I>Route 66</I>'s charming wanderer George Maharis is a conniving traitor under an unflattering mop of greasy hair, and Richard Moll dons a latex monster mask to play the double-crossed demon. It's utterly silly and often awkward, but it does have energy to spare. The sequel promised at the end of the film was never produced and Pyun went on to direct some of the best straight-to-video action films of the 1990s, including <I>Nemesis</I>. <I>--Sean Axmaker</I>

Oldie but a goodie!.......2007-06-11
I was very surprised watching this ancient dungeons and dragons-esque film. it reminded me of the days of going to arcades and playing games like "asteroids"! this is a great nostalgia flick from the 80's that is filled with the cliche' "hero" type elements. evil king cromwell (richard Lynch)wants dominion over the land and attempts to do so through the aid of a demon's help (richard Moll as Xusia which is a very well playeed role) to rid himself of all competition. Enter Talon a daring mercenary, whom conquers dungeons, and castles alike! But when Talon learns that he is Prince of a kingdom controlled by an evil sorceror he seeks out the Tri-Bladed sword (the slide sword) and seeks out the demon and the king to save a beautiful princess. can Talon arrive in time? or will Cromwell and the Demon win? watch this excellent albeit old film and find out!
one of the few films like Krull, Conan the Barbarian, Legend, LOTR trilogy and more (just not quite the buget of LOTR) a wonderful adventure suited for advenurers everywhere! (Rated R by the motion picture association of america) color 99 minutes widescreen (1.85:1) enhanced for 16x9 tv's theatrical trailers and a tv spot wrap this dvd up nicely in a 4 Star package!
The Sword and the Sorcerer
The Sword and The Sorcerer.......2007-03-29
This was one of the better sword fantasy movies of the 70's. I enjoyed watching this movie when I was younger and purchased this movie for my teenage son to watch. He enjoyed it as well, although he commented on the special effects being very cheesy compared to what they have now. I reminded him that this was 30 years ago. For then, I think the special effects were rather good.

So what if some of the dialogue is bad and some of the props are lame? This movie is fun, fast and never takes itself too seriously. Lee Horsley plays the archetypal mercenary/barbarian/Conan figure to perfection and is so likable it makes it all work.
Cromwell is great as is Xusia and Rodrigo and all the rest. A lot of these actors went on to successful TV roles in Murphy Brown, Night Court and of course Horsley in Matt Houston. Look through the credits to see.
I love the three bladed sword that shoots, I love the harem scene and the girls that trip up the soldiers chasing Talon, I love how Kathleen Bell keeps kneeing guys in the crotch until being blocked by the demon (and I learned a very important fact of life: demons have no nads), I love how the mercenaries all get caught trying to sneak back in the castle (hey potatoe head!), I love it all! It is all so much fun. I watch this movie at least once or twice a month and enjoy it again and again.
This film actually won some awards back in the day and made a ton of profit at the box office. It cost around 2 mil to film and raked in over 40 mil. That is why no sequel was ever made b/c the producers retired. But never fear fans of The Sword and the Sorcerer, I am in the works of obtaining the rights and making the sequel come true. Tales of the Ancient Empire will happen. Oh yes, it shall be done!
Talon and His Gillette Mach3 Turbo Razor.......2007-01-30
Our friends at Gillette would have us believe that three blades are better than one. Well then, Prince Talon in The Sword and the Sorcerer was waaaayyyy ahead of his time! Talon's triple-bladed sword not only would break any foe's single blade to pieces, it could launch two of its blades at its target(s).
Not to be one-upped, Gillette has launched the five-blade, battery powered (use a Gillette owned Duracell AAA please) Fusion shaving system that features a patented on-board micro-chip to optimize performance by regulating voltage and frequency. Good God...are consumers really so stupid as to go for such a crock? Oy.
Anyway....
How many movies do you remember seeing back in a different lifetime that you thought were really cool only to check 'em out in the current day and find that they really were average at best? The Sword and the Sorcerer is definitely one of those movies. 25 years is a long time, and my viewing of this film back in 1982 at age 20 was...let's just say..."enhanced" by...well...the things I used to do prior to plopping myself in front of cable TV at 2 a.m.
But The Sword and the Sorcerer is still fun. The audio magicians did a little sorcery of their own and gave Sword a surround sound update back in 2001, but the DVD picture is still as grainy as a VCR would be.
The story is cool. A fictional Days of King Arthur-ish tale of Tyrant Titus Cromwell's rise to power, and, Son of King Richard, Prince Talon's fight to take back the throne that would have been his. Throw in evil Sorcerer Xusia (also vying for the Crown), have him conjure up a ton of camp and a lack of continuity, and you have what-seemed-a-lot-better-at-the-time The Sword and the Sorcerer.
The Sword and the Sorcerer was Albert Pyun's directorial debut (and it shows). But the movie's $40MM box office take surprised even the producers that had originally planned a sequel called Tales of the Ancient Empire that continued the adventure of Prince Talon. Pyun said that Sword was so profitable that ironically a decision was made to scrap the sequel and just bank the profits of the original. Smart move.
Pyun went on to direct a score of B movies and clunkers. The little known lead actors all went on to lead pretty successful TV careers. No sequel was ever made. We all lived happily ever after.
Sword and Sorcerey.......2007-01-10
Loved this movie when I first saw it and now I can see over and over again, arrived in great condition.

romantic nice movie of the 50s
Great sequel to Peyton Place.......2007-02-15
Return to Peyton Place begins with Rosemary Clooney singing the beautiful title song,(she sings it faboulously, and she is featured here because her then husband Jose Ferrer is the director (also see his State Fair..a hilarious mess) the Franz Waxman melody that enhanced so much of the 1957 film, Peyton Place. Then you get a whole new cast, and Carol Lynley, writing a book about Peyton Place with Jeff Chandler. She and he are 'artists", and they have to deal with Mary Astor, a pillar of morality in Peyton Place. Her performance is not to be missed; it is a thorough lesson in screen acting, lessons she shared with Bette Davis years before. If you are curious about how to dominate a low end script, watch Ms. Astor do it.
Then there is Tuesday Weld, who should have been cast as Allison but is Salina Cross and very good in her scenes with Mary Astor. She(Weld) has some harrowing moments in trying to defend herself from charges of lustiness with certain folk in Peyton Place. Eleanor Parker is the new Connie and she is not as good as Lana Turner, but she has moments with Lynley that define a new kind of melodrammatic acting..so over the top Everest would be a mole hill here. . Also, Lucianna Paluzzi is here, with her Italian ways, her accent is so thick she is mostly incomprehensible, and she is driven to ,literally, the heights and depths of despair. Her scenes with Mary Astor are seering moments of sado-masochistic behavior. Bret Halsey, an actor with incredible limitations, is puddy for Mary Astor, who plays his mother. Robert Sterling as Parker's officious husband, and principal of Peyton Place High School, is an unintentional bore and has odd facial expressions and an aversion to E. Parker that makes one wonder.
The ending of Return To Peyton Place is a treasure of great and bad acting..terrible direction, and incredible style and talent, complments of Ms. Astor, on how to do the whole thing and take the film away from everyone.
There's a lurid quality to it all, and this sequel is not as polite as the first Peyton Place(a very good film). This sequel shows Peyton Place to be a really disturbed town within, like Black Rock in Bad Day At Black Rock.
The mentality of all of them is small and pornographic, and Allison's book about the past goings on is the sum total of the town itself, illiterate, mean spirited and low vibration, and Allison is like this herself, splitting infinitives, her verb tenses all mixed up, and her continuous pouting and constant referral in every crisis to sexual repression. The book (written in the film)is, in an odd way, the best the town could ever do in this regard. In this sense Allison is more Peyton Place than anyone else; she is proud of her bad book, and wants to build a new Peyton Place on it.
See this film on DVD, and enjoy all of its craziness. You will not forget Mary Astor. Also check out the talk shopw scene with Lynley and the dubbing of the host by Jose Ferrer..unbelievable, and this man worked with David Lean.
Good follow-up on its own merits.......2007-02-13
I thoroughly enjoyed this film. It has a stellar cast & is an engrossing sequel to the original. The plots are interesting & the actors are talented & enjoyable to watch. It isn't fair to compare it to the original. The original was great, but then so is this contribution to the film series. I would recommend it to be watched back-to-back on a sunday afternoon, it would make for a fun marathon. Myself, I'm not at all a fan of sequels, but Carol Lynley, Jeff Chandler, Mary Astor & Brett Halsey deserve kudos for their meat & potatoes performances in this production. I'm very pleased it's finally on DVD.
Classic - Peyton Place.......2006-11-05
If you liked Peyton Place, you will love this movie. Jeff Chandler does a great job portraying "the publisher" of Allison's book as well as her lover for the moment. This also has a variety of things happening in Peyton Place that you will find interesting.
Gossip, Gossip, Gossip.......2005-11-07
It isn't mandatory that you watch Peyton Place before Return To Peyton Place as the actors are different and some of the characters did not reappear in the sequel. I watched both back to back and Return To... was just as glossy, trashy and colourfully slick as its predecessor. With a story like this, taking place in a small town full of characters, there are more than enough stories to interweave. The audio commentary of Sylvia Stoddard is a great supplement to this dvd. (see also The Best of Everything) She related stories about Tuesday Weld, Mary Astor and Grace Metalious among many others. This is a well-produced melodrama and I recommend it on that basis.

Love Willie Nelson.......2007-03-30
Wonderful double feature. If you like George Strait and Willie Nelson you will love these movies.Honeysuckle Rose is a fablous movie with Willie Nelson and has alot of his music in the movie. Great!
Honeysuckle Rose.......2007-01-30
The almost legendary country road movie finally on DVD! Never seen a more authentic movie on this topic. Nevertheless that it's an "oldie" already and there are no DVD main menu or subtitles - it's a "must" for everyone lovin' country music. You shouldn't miss it!
Country Music lover from Down Under.......2007-01-10
I happened onto Honeysuckle Rose late one night years ago and it has taken me some time to find this gem again. For all you good old boys who think you're the only ones who really understand Country Music, take it from an CM mad Aussie, this is Willie Nelson at his absolute best. OK, so it was never going to win awards for acting or story line, but Lordy, when you hear Willie get into "Whiskey River" it makes you want to get up on that stage with him. I love it.
Great deal.......2006-11-11
The Pure Country/Honeysuckle Rose DVD was not only a great deal---but it was also a great dvd---fantastic picture and sound.......
At last..........2006-09-19
I have been waiting for Honeysuckle Rose for years! I saw it in the theater and loved it. If you love Willie, you'll love this movie. Slim Pickens is also awesome. Don't look for anything deep - just a feel good movie with great music.
Pure Country is a movie you can enjoy with the whole family. If you like George Strait, you should see it. He essentially plays himself. Enjoyable.

A nice movie, well acted , but a little slow in places.......2007-04-12
As a child I remember watching this one with my Dad and enjoying it very much. I wish you could give half stars because that is what I would give this. The cast is first rate with special honors going to Jeff Chandler and his turn as the Captain. He really show what command must be like. We see the worry over his crew and how he has to ride them hard sometime to keep them ready to do their jobs and still shows the feeling of loneliness that goes with the job. My only problem with this film is that it tends to drag in some spots, but still I think most fans of war movies, the Navy, and older movies will enjoy this one.
Away All Boats.......2007-03-13
A typical black and white film with a superb story and a brilliant actor in Jeff Chandler
This DVD is a copy of a VHS tape.......2006-03-18
Good Times is selling a Chinese/Asian rip-off of a VHS tape. No wide screen, no digital upgrade.
The movie itself is excellent but don't waste your money on this thing.
Away All Boats.......2004-12-19
I'm also a Navy Vietnam-era veteran and I do love this film. I had recorded it years ago and now can't find the tape so I am sure I will be getting the DVD here. This movie was filmed, in part, aboard the Amphibious Transport ship USS SANDOVAL APA (LPA) 194. I was stationed on this ship in 1968-69 until we decommissioned her. Watching the landing exercises in this film brought back many memories as I was part of 2nd Division which was the boat division and we were "graded" on our readiness.
This has good acting and alot of adventure. The script was a bit hoaky at times but that can be overlooked. I highly recommend this film. Get it and Set Condition One-Alpha!
High Marks from a Navy Vet! .......2004-08-21
I was a big fan of Chandler as a boy in the 1950's. My personal favorites of his from then and as an adult are Pillars of the Sky and Yankee Pasha. As always with older films, you have to put them in the context of the time in which they were made as far as style, realism, etc. Believe me, this guy was handsome to the ladies and a man's man to the guys....tons of on screen magnetism.
The main thing I want to add about both Chandler and this movie is my experience watching this film as a Navy officer aboard a ship of the very same type during the Viet Nam era. The title of the film refers to the fact that the ship (the Belinda, as I recall) was an amphibious cargo ship, one which carries marine vehicles, anchors off the coast, lowers boats ("away all boats") into the water and drops the vehicles into the boats for the trip to the beach with U.S Marines who drive them ashore and onward. In the officers' wardroom aboard the USS El Paso in the early '70's, we watched this movie multiple times and loved it as well done and realistic.
We did get some big chuckles out of the casting comparing actors like Richard Boone ("Have Gun Will Travel") playing, I think, the First Lieutenant, and Lex Barker (Tarzan) as the Executive Officer and comparing these guys to our own counterparts. We all thought the film was "Navy" all the way, however. I'm not sure if these amphibious cargo ships are still in operation, but they were used through the first Gulf War.
This movie is realistic and an accurate depiction of a U.S.Navy amphibious ship during wartime. Chandler is certainly the main man in the story but does not dominate to quite the same extent as in some of his other films. He is good in the role, however, and this is an authentic depiction of Navy life and a good story.

Description
Brigadier General Frank D. Merrill leads the 3,000 American volunteers of his 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), aka "Merrill's Marauders", behind Japanese lines across Burma to Myitkyina, pushing beyond their limits and fighting pitched battles at every strong-point.
Customer Reviews:
The star here is Sam Fuller.......2006-07-31
This is a great war film (I saw it first in its theatrical release), and deserves to be in DVD (like "Siege of Firebase Gloria" should be.)Sam Fuller made a number of war films -- ranging in quality and budget: his last war film was "Big Red One." Fuller made "noir" war films. Knowing something about Fuller helps explain the abrupt and unsatisfying ending of "Marauders": Fuller's original ending was considered too downbeat by the Studio and was cut. A new "rah-rah" ending -- the stock footage -- was added by the Studio. I do not know if the film with Fuller's ending was ever released: I have never seen it and have never read anyone who has. Fuller's film does bear comparison with "Objective Burma," which tells almost the same story with a more fictionalized historical context. Flynn thought it was the best film he was ever in, and he was probably right. "Marauders" is a gritty war film that should be seen by everyone who enjoys the genre.
Great cast, lame script, not filmed in Burma.......2006-01-06
I have to disagree with folks who like this film. The action scenes are extremely lame. Even the gunfire sounds like blanks, not real shots. The scenery could never be mistaken for Burma, it looks like, well, the Philippines! Despite earnest performances by all concerned, especially Chandler, the script goes nowhere and is merely a string of cliches. The budget must have been tight on this one, and it shows all over. The only decent music is stolen from "Objective Burma", a far superior production. It's too bad, as the cast here could have done fine with a better script and budget.
Another great war movie from Sam Fuller.......2005-06-28
Merrill's Marauders is an excellent WWII movie dealing with a topic often ignored in war movies covering the Pacific Theater. In 1944, the 5307th Composite Unit, Merrill's Marauders, 3,000 seasoned jungle fighters, march into Burma with the objective of the supply depot at Walawbum and the airfield at Myitkyina. The Marauders must march across hundreds of miles of dense jungle, pushing themselves to their mental and physical limits, battling Japanese troops all the way. Like most Fuller movies, Marauders has plenty of great action scenes as the 5307th trudges across Burma. Along with the excellent battle scenes, Fuller includes several very powerful and moving scenes, specifically when the Marauders are resting in a Burmese village and are approached by the villagers. At a compact 99 minutes, Merrill's Marauders is a quick-paced, action-packed, exciting war movie from Samuel Fuller.
Jeff Chandler gives one of his best performances as Brigadier General Frank Merrill, the commander of the 5307th who must push his men to their absolute limit, physically and mentally. Unfortunately, Chandler died before the film was released in theaters. Ty Hardin matches Chandler with his performance as Lt. Lee Stockton, Merrill's long-time friend and leader of the 5307th's scout platoon. Andrew Duggan plays Captain Kolodny, the doctor accompanying the unit. Stockton's platoon includes Peter Brown as Bullseye, the platoon's sharpshooter, Claude Akins as Kolowicz, the tough sergeant, Will Hutchins as Chowhound, Charles Briggs as Muley, the mule-packer, and Pancho Magalona as Taggy, the Filipino scout. Unfortunately, there is no DVD release of Merrill's Marauders, although this is one film that definitely deserves a release. The VHS copy is of decent quality in pan-n-scan. The VHS copies are getting harder to find, so if you locate one, pick it up. Overall, Merrill's Marauders is an exciting, moving look at the invasion of Burma that has been unfairly looked over since its release. Well worth it if you can find a copy.
"Merrill's Marauders".......2002-03-23
I have the movie in VHS, part of (I like to feel) a good collection of war films, in both VHS & DVD, from - "All Quiet on the Western Front '1930'" to "Saving Private Ryan '1998', some '140' war films. I can certainly use the 2 former as a benchmark for comparison & rating. If "Saving Private Ryan", the finest war film I have ever seen, with the most graphically realistic & brutal battle scenes, ever shown on film, has, without a doubt become the benchmark by which all later war films would be judged, then "Merrill's Marauders" is a '60's classic, with, in my opinion, some of the finest acting ever portrayed in a war film! Jeff Chandler, as an earlier review stated, gives one of his finest performances, (He truly is a gifted actor!)This movie portrays, as was intended the American involvement in the Burma Theater of Operations against the Japanese, a 3000 strong unit, put together of mostly seasoned troops, volunteers, for 1 mission against the enemy. From Jeff Chandlers gritty performance, such as when he tells his men - quote -"Everybody back into the swamp" instead of waiting for desperately needed food & ammo supplies, to avoid enemy troops searching for them, to a very poignant scene by actor Claude Akins. All the soldiers are completely exhausted from continuous battles with the enemy, and literally starving, from lack of food supplies that had run out, He's approached by an old Burmese woman & young boy, in a village they have just occupied after a brutal battle, the pair attempt to feed him the
only food they have, a bowl of rice. Overwhelmed by it all, he not only breaks down in tears, but in a gesture reminiscent of the generation, and considering the horrific battle he's just been through, removes his cap in a show of gentlemanly respect
to the old woman. To me the most touching & realistic scene I have ever seen him portray. As far as accuracy, I give the movie
"High Marks", there is a scene in the reservoir night battle scene when the Japanese are attempting to infiltrate the American lines, a Japanese soldier who tries to bayonet Claude Akins is stopped by him and flipped over the stone wall and killed. If you look closely at the Japanese soldiers footwear, as he is flipped over the wall(you may have to do it in slo-mo)you'll notice he is wearing the standard split-toe style shoe worn by Japanese troops during the war. The film makers, working for this type of accuracy, though it may well have not been noticed by the general public, only speaks for the realism that they worked to achieve. I agree with another review, in that the Japanese were, in many instances easy kills in the battle action, but I consider this a small slight against what I deem an excellent movie filled with gritty realism, good battle action, and an excellent look at the common American soldier in action and the constant fear, hunger & deprivation he faced, exemplified by the courage & tenacity with which he persevered and eventually triumphed over the enemy!
Sure it's meant to rous the American public of the "60's" with the unbeatable fighting spirit of the Ameircan G.I., and that's exactly what it does, and does well! To all who read this, I am fairly new to the internet, and just learning my way around, but at age 48, I've seen most every war film shown, and I feel I am a fair judge. I give this film and the director & cast a solid "4 STARS ****!!!

Merrill's Marauders.......2000-08-18
This is a rugged and gritty WWII film set in the CBI Theater directed by Samuel Fuller. The action concerns Jeff Chandler, in his last screen portrayal, as Brig. Gen. Frank Merrill. Merrill leads a band of battle fatigued GIs (Ty Hardin, Peter Brown, Claude Akins, Will Hutchins and others) against the Japanese in the Burmese jungle. It is beautifully photographed in color and CinemaScope by William Clothier. Fuller co-wrote the script with Milton Sperling. This film has been highly underrated. It is a good depiction of the stress, determination and humanity experienced by the average GI in everyday face-to-face confrontation with the enemy. Jeff Chandler gives an accurate performance of the real Merrill. Jeff Chandler truly was a gifted actor and deserves more recognition for his talents as this film demonstrates. The VHS copy is in Full-Frame, but it retains the images in vivid color and is very enjoyable. It was released theatrically in 1962.

Maureen O'Hara movies.......2007-03-20
This is a good movie for those out there putting a Maureen O'Hara movie collection together. The story moves along well and you might even recognize some other upcoming stars in supporting actor roles. The bottom line ? Maureen O'Hara looks great and has that "spark" that set her well ahead of the pack.
All right! But not very imaginative..........2006-11-09
"War Arrow" opens with major Jeff Chandler arriving at Fort Clark, Texas, and discovering that Colonel John McIntire openly opposes the government endorsed plan to make use of displaced Seminole Indians to stop the bloody Kiowa uprising on soldiers and settlers...
In fact, the only person at the fort who is friendly to Chandler is Maureen O'Hara, the attractive widow of Captain James Bannon...
All the action leads to a tidy end: Chandler discovers Bannon is very much alive (at least at the climax of the movie) and is really the renegade white chief of the Kiowas...
In the small assigned action-packed moments in this slight entrance, the pillaging Kiowas are totally controlled... For a rare change Maureen had some harsh competition in the fascinating department, which was supplied by Suzan Ball as the passionately sensual daughter of the Seminole chief...
The film is more of an excuse to show that excellent guys, always end up with excellent girls--even when the best guy resists authority and tries to match one tribe of Indians against another... All right! But not very imaginative... don't you think?
Entertaining Chandler/O'Hara Western.......2006-03-02
War Arrow is one of those Westerns that has fallen through the cracks over time. One reason is that there were so many of them. Another reason is that its male star, Jeff Chandler, was still in the early stages of superstardom before his untimely death in 1962. Another reason may be that War Arrow would never be considered one of the all-time great Westerns.
But War Arrow is also a very fun, entertaining Western with a great cast and top-notch execution. Chandler plays a cavalry officer sent to an outpost surrounded by besieging Kiowa Indians. Joined by fellow soldiers Charles Drake and Noah Beery, Chandler immediately annoys the fort's superior officer (played by John McIntire with his usual solid but natural acting style). Chandler accomplishes this by suggested that neighboring Seminole Indians would make a perfect weapon against the warring Kiowas.
Chandler also immediately becomes smitten with O'Hara, a widow of a recently killed cavalry soldier. O'Hara veers wildly from being madly in love with Chandler to being confused about being a widow in love so soon after her husband's death.
Chandler begins to train the Seminoles to fight, all the while realizing that McIntire is a rival for O'Hara's affections. Meanwhile, the Kiowas are working toward an attack on the fort.
The plot moves along crisply, with a number of nicely staged action pieces. Everyone does their job well and War Arrow is more than worth a Western-lover's time.
Entertaining little oater...........2004-06-08
Okay, this vehicle for Maureen O'Hara and Jeff Chandler isn't top drawer; still, it's nicely entertaining and filled with rip-snorting action. Universal-International put a lot of good production values into their '50s Westerns, and their output with Jimmy Stewart, Audie Murphy, Rock Hudson, and even Rory Calhoun, is admirable. War Arrow has those good values, and some decent acting, as well. Not maybe in the league with NO NAME ON THE BULLET or CANYON PASSAGE or some of the other Universals of the period, but still worth the relatively inexpensive price charged.
Here Come the Cavalry !.......2004-06-08
While "B" westerns died out in the early 50s, with the rising popularity of television, Hollywood continued to make dozens of "A" westerns with name stars and more adult situations. Some were true classics like "Shane" and "The Searchers"--some were just "product"--something to fill half of a double bill. "War Arrow" falls into the latter category.
Jeff Chandler stars as a US cavalry officer who tries to use a "good" Indian tribe--the Seminoles--against a "bad" tribe of marauding Kiowas. Let's not get into "political correctness"--the film is over 50 years old. Not only does he have his hands full with these Native Americans, the commanding officer of the local fort, played by a gruff John McIntyre, resents his presence and "progressive" ideas. A beautiful "widow"--Maureen O'Hara--is trapped at the fort, and she soon has Jeff practically drooling over her. Since John wants her too, the "rapport" between the two men plunges further downhill. The movie toddles along for about an hour, before a climactic attack on the fort by those nasty Kiowas--led by Jay Silverheels, taking a break from his "good guy" Tonto image !
Jeff Chandler, with his piercing eyes and prematurely grey hair, gives the film more dignity than it deserves. He was a good actor, and his early death deprived the movies of a fine leading man. Maureen O'Hara has always been a stunning woman--that red hair, those flashing eyes, the fiery "Irish colleen" personality--yet, in this film, she seems to be going through the motions. Perhaps after "The Quiet Man", movies like this were not exactly inspiring for her. Comic relief is provided by Noah Beery as one of Mr. Chandler's sidekicks--Charles Drake is the other. Suzan Ball sizzles as an "Indian maid", while Henry Brandon is solid as her father, the Seminole chief--not the first or last time that Mr. Brandon would play a Native American. Another member of the tribe, with totally understandable "hots" for Ms. Ball, is played by Dennis Weaver--not too well--a good thing that "Gunsmoke" was just around the corner ! "B" western actor, Jim Bannon, is also featured--he may bill himself as "James" here, but his acting is as wooden and one-dimensional as ever.
The DVD exhibits a colourful, if slightly hazy, full-screen picture, and mono sound.
I bought "War Arrow" because I like westerns, Jeff Chandler and Maureen O'Hara--but sometimes, even with a lot of good ingredients, you can wind up with a second-rate stew ! I would file this one under "disappointing".

I've always thought this movie was a little bit corny, but I love it anyway. It's one of those rare movies that you can watch over and over and still enjoy.
Great -- Music and story.......2007-06-08
I have watched this several times since purchase; I love the story line about getting back to what matters instead of smoke and mirrors. Needless to say, the music is even better. George Strait IS Pure Country.
