Product Description

Liam Neeson (Batman Begins, Star Wars: Episode 1 "The Phantom Menace" ) and Pierce Brosnan (Bond movies, The Thomas Crown Affair) star in this epic chase and primal battle set in the breathtaking landscape of the West. The civil war has ended but Colonel Morsman Carver (Neeson) is on one final mission: to kill Gideon (Brosnan) no matter what it takes. Launched by a gunshot and propelled by rage, the relentless pursuit takes them both far from the comforts and codes of civilization, into the bloodiest recesses of their own souls. Also starring Academy Award® winner Anjelica Huston and Angie Harmon. It's been five years since the end of the American Civil War. Somewhere deep within the snowy mountains of the American West a lone figure - Gideon (Brosnan) sits in front of a fire, lost in thought. Abruptly, he is pulled out of his reverie by the echo of a Henry rifle and a bullet puffing into the snow inches from his head. Instantly Gideon calculates his one chance of survival. To leave everything he owns and run for the cover. And so begins the thrilling account of Colonel Morsman Carver's (Neeson) terrible revenge - to hunt down and kill Gideon, no matter what it takes. There will be many men dead before these two meet face to face, and only then will Carver fully comprehend the full cost of his undertaking. Launched by a gunshot and propelled by rage, the relentless pursuit will take them both far from the comforts and codes of civilization and into the unforgiving wilderness.

A great-looking, well-acted Western in the old-school tradition, Seraphim Falls is definitely worth a look for fans of the genre. There's nothing really new here (which explains why it played only briefly in theaters), and more than a few critics noted its obvious similarities to Clint Eastwood's classic The Outlaw Josey Wales. Still, you have to admire director and cowriter David Von Ancken (a 10-year TV veteran making his feature debut) for delivering an engrossing post-Civil War revenge story (cowritten with Abby Everett Jacques) that isn't hobbled by its overly familiar plotting. Blessed by the exquisite cinematography of John Toll (whose credits include The Thin Red Line, Almost Famous and The Last Samurai) and bolstered by a lush but unobtrusive score by Harry Gregson-Williams, this prestigious production begins very well indeed, with a wintry manhunt in the Ruby Mountains of Nevada, circa 1868. Former Union captain Gideon (Pierce Brosnan) is being tracked by a seemingly brutal pursuer named Carver (Liam Neeson) whose four-man posse (including veteran character actors Ed Lauter and Michael Wincott) is soon reduced to two.

As the manhunt continues, Brosnan and Neeson make the most of minimal dialogue, and flashbacks give us hints about the tragic event that set this plot in motion. It's a simple, elemental tale of justice in the wilderness, with occasional quirks like a snake-oil vendor (Anjelica Huston) who appears literally out of nowhere, and a top-hatted Indian (Wes Studi) who gives the film a slight, mystical air of mystery. And while a more daring director might have opted for a more powerful visual style, there's something to be said for Von Ancken's straightforward approach, perfectly matched by Toll's breathtaking landscapes, shot on location in Oregon and New Mexico and ranging from raging rivers to sun-baked desert flats. None of this makes Seraphim Falls a particularly exceptional movie, but with a fine cast that also includes such familiar faces as Angie Harmon, Tom Noonan, Xander Berkeley, and Kevin J. O'Connor, there's ample reward in a film that doesn't pretend to be anything more than a respectable entry in its genre. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Intelligent but accessible.......2007-06-24

Any film with an opening half hour as great as this may inevitably seem like a let down when it draws to a close. Still, this is the best new Western in years. Liam's accent is a little off, but Pierce delivers an outstanding, almost animalistic performance. This should have been a hit.

4 out of 5 stars Beautifully filmed, well-acted Western.......2007-06-19

I'm not particularly a fan of the Western genre, but I am a fan of actor Liam Neeson, which is why I gave this film a try. I'm glad I did. The scenery is outstanding and just gorgeous to look at. Both of the lead actors, Neeson and Pierce Brosnan are very good. I've always thought of Brosnan as kind of a pretty boy, but not in this movie. In fact, it's even a bit hard to recognise him. The viewer can't help but pull for Brosnan's character as the hunted man. However, when we finally learn what exactly happened to put Neesons' character on his quest for revenge, we fully understand his actions and he emerges as much more sympathetic, whether or not you believe his actions are justified. I also thought it was interesting the way the director went from hard reality to scenes toward the end that were almost surreal, specifically the Native American at the stream and the lady trader who just happens to be traveling across the desert at exactly the right time to put the final events into motion. I don't know where this movie ranks in terms of great Western films, but I certainly enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars A thriller of a Western!.......2007-06-16

This movie really deserves 10 stars! Awesome scenery and fantastic directing/writing. Gideon (Pierce Brosnan) is a formidable foe for Carver (Liam Neeson), a man seeking revenge three years after the Civil War. 'War is Hell' is an understatement in this story of two men with emotional scars from the war and everything it has taken from them struggling to just keep going. Unable to put their pasts behind, they take their hatred and anger out on one another. The intensity of the action is constant as Gideon runs for his life, adept at killing anyone intending harm if they get too close to him. Both men leave a trail of blood. How much will they spill before putting an end to their personal war?

A really good movie. It is a great addition to my DVD collection

4 out of 5 stars Solid western.......2007-06-08

Very enjoyable for western buffs. Both Neeson and Brosnan were equals in performance and effort. Some well known faces in some very small secondary roles were interesting, but, really didn't add much to the overall story. This reminded me alot of the chase movie Charles Bronsan and Lee Marvin did several decades ago. Nice to see a western actually filmed in the states instead of Canada for a change. The ending was probably too predicatable, but, then anything else might have been wrong.

Roger Moore, in his second outing as James Bond, meets Christopher Lee's Scaramanga, one of the most magnetic villains in the entire series, in this entertaining but rather wan entry in the 007 sweepstakes. Moore balances the overplayed humor of the film with a steely performance and Lee's charm and enthusiasm makes Scaramanga a cool, deadly, and thoroughly enchanting adversary. --Sean Axmaker

<img border="0" align=right src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/aplus/007/300/goldfinger_2_300.jpg"> <b>Goldfinger:</b> To own Goldfinger (1964) on DVD is to have at your fingertips the proof that Sean Connery is the definitive James Bond. No one but Connery can believably seduce women so effortlessly, kill with almost as much ease, and then pull another bottle of Dom Perignon '53 out of the fridge. Goldfinger contains many of the most memorable scenes in the Bond series: gorgeous Shirley Eaton (as Jill Masterson) coated in gold paint by evil Auric Goldfinger and deposited in Bond's bed; silent Oddjob, flipping a razor-sharp derby like a Frisbee to sever heads; our hero spread-eagle on a table while a laser beam moves threateningly toward his crotch. Goldfinger's two climaxes, inside Fort Knox and aboard a private plane, have to be seen to be believed. --Raphael Shargel</p> <img border="0" align=left src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/aplus/007/300/not-enough_2_300.jpg"> <b>The World Is Not Enough:</b>Bond 5.0, Pierce Brosnan, undercuts his usually suave persona with a darker, more brutal edge largely absent since Sean Connery departed. Equally tantalizing are our initial glimpses of Bond's nemesis du jour, Renard (Robert Carlyle), and imminent love interest, Elektra King (Sophie Marceau), both atypically complex characters cast with seemingly shrewd choices, and directed by the capable Michael Apted. The story's focus on post-Soviet geopolitics likewise starts off on a savvy note, before being overtaken by increasingly Byzantine plot twists, hidden motives, and reversals of loyalty superheated by relentless (if intermittently perfunctory) action sequences.--Sam Sutherland</p> <img border="0" align=right src="http://g-images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/diamonds_3_300.jpg"> <b>Diamonds Are Forever:</b> Sean Connery retired from the 007 franchise after You Only Live Twice but was lured back for one last official appearance as James Bond in Diamonds Are Forever. Goldfinger director Guy Hamilton keeps the film zipping along gamely from one entertaining set piece to another, including a terrific car chase in a parking lot, a battle with a pair of bikini-clad killer gymnasts named Bambi and Thumper, and a deadly game with a bizarre pair of fey, sardonic killers who dispatch their victims with elaborate invention. Connery retired again after this one but he returned once more, for Never Say Never Again 15 years later. --Sean Axmaker</p> <img border="0" align=left src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/aplus/007/300/living-daylights_3_300.jpg"> <b>The Living Daylights:</b> Timothy Dalton made his 007 debut in the lean, mean mode of Sean Connery, doing away with the pun-filled camp of Roger Moore's final outings. This James Bond is ruthless, tough, and romantic. The Living Daylights, set during the thaw of the cold war, begins with the defection of Russian KGB General Koskov (Jeroen Krabb) and his revelation of a Soviet plot to eliminate Britain's secret agent force. Assigned to eliminate Koskov's Soviet boss (John Rhys-Davies), Bond uncovers a conspiracy involving Koskov and an American arms dealer (Joe Don Baker). Veteran series director John Glen's action scenes have never been better--especially the show-stopping mid-air battle on the net of a speeding cargo plane--and he returns the series to the smart, rough, high-energy adventures that made the Bond reputation. --Sean Axmaker</p> <img border="0" align=right src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/aplus/007/300/bond4-s.jpg"> <b>A View to a Kill</b>: Roger Moore's last outing as James Bond is evidence enough that it was time to pass the torch to another actor. Beset by crummy action (an out-of-control fire engine?) and featuring a fading Moore still trying to prop up his mannered idea of style, the film is largely interesting for Christopher Walken's quirky performance as a sort-of supervillain who wants to take out California's Silicon Valley. Grace Jones has a spookily interesting presence as a lethal associate of Walken's (and who, in the best Bond tradition, has sex with 007 before trying to kill him later), and Patrick Macnee (Steed!) has a warm if brief bit. Even directed by John Glen, who brought some crackle to the Moore years in the Bond franchise, this is a very slight effort. -- Tom Keogh

<img border="0" align=left src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/aplus/007/300/bond8-s.jpg"> <b>Thunderball</b>: James Bond's fourth adventure takes him to the Bahamas, where a NATO warplane with a nuclear payload has disappeared into the sea. Bond (Sean Connery) travels from a tiny health spa (where he tangles with a mechanized masseuse run amuck) to the casinos of Nassau and soon picks up the trail of SPECTRE's number-two man, Emilio Largo (Adolfo Celi), and his beautiful mistress, Domino (Claudine Auger), whom Bond soon seduces to his side. Equipped with more gadgets than ever, 007 escapes an ambush with a personal-size jet pack and takes to the water as he searches for the undersea plane, battles Largo's pet sharks, and finally leads the battle against Largo's scuba-equipped henchmen in a spectacular underwater climax. This thrilling Bond entry became Connery's most successful outing in the series and was remade in 1983 as Never Say Never Again, with Connery returning to the role after a 12-year hiatus. --Sean Axmaker</p> <img border="0" align=right src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/aplus/007/300/bond1-s.jpg"> <b>Die Another Day</b>: The 20th James Bond adventure, Die Another Day succeeds on three important fronts: it avoids comparison to Austin Powers by keeping its cheesy humor in check, allows Halle Berry to be sexy and worthy of a spinoff franchise, and keeps pace with the technical wizardry that modern action films demand. Pierce Brosnan is paired with American agent Jinx (Berry) in chasing a genetically altered North Korean villain (Rick Yune) armed with a satellite capable of destroying just about anything. John Cleese and Judi Dench reprise their recurring roles (as "Q" and "M," respectively); they're accompanied by weapons-laden sports cars, a hokey cameo by Madonna (who sings the techno-pulsed theme song), and enough double-entendres to keep Bond-philes adequately shaken and stirred. Die Another Day makes you welcome the familiar end-credits promise: James Bond will return. --Jeff Shannon</p> <img border="0" align=left src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/aplus/007/300/bond10-s.jpg"> <b>The Spy Who Loved Me</b>: The best of the James Bond adventures starring Roger Moore as tuxedoed Agent 007, this globe-trotting thriller introduced the steel-toothed Jaws (played by seven-foot-two-inch-tall actor Richard Kiel) as one of the most memorable and indestructible Bond villains. Jaws is so tenacious, in fact, that Moore looks genuinely frightened, and that adds to the abundant fun. This time Bond teams up with yet another lovely Russian agent (Barbara Bach) to track a pair of nuclear submarines that the nefarious Stromberg (Curt Jürgens) plans to use in his plot to start World War III. The Spy Who Loved Me is a galaxy away from the suave Sean Connery exploits of the 1960s, but the film works perfectly as grandiose entertainment. From cavernous undersea lairs to the vast horizons of Egypt, this Bond thriller keeps its tongue firmly in cheek with a plot tailor-made for daredevil escapism. --Jeff Shannon</p> <img border="0" align=right src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/aplus/007/300/bond2-s.jpg"> <b>License to Kill</b>: Timothy Dalton's second and last shot at playing James Bond isn't nearly as much fun as his debut, two years earlier, in the 1987 The Living Daylights. This time Bond gets mad after a close friend (David Hedison) from the intelligence sector is assassinated on his wedding day, and 007 goes undercover to link the murder to an international drug cartel. Robert Davi makes an interesting adversary, but as with most of the Bond films in the '70s, '80s, and '90s--and especially since the end of the cold war--one has to wonder why we should still care about these lesser villains and their unimaginative crimes. Still, Dalton did manage in his short time with the character to make 007 his own, which neither Roger Moore did nor Pierce Brosnan did. --Tom Keogh</p> <img border="0" align=left src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/james-bond/3/goldeneye2_sm.jpg"> <b>Goldeneye</b>: The 18th James Bond adventure was a runaway box-office success when released in 1995, thanks to the arrival of Pierce Brosnan as the fifth actor (following the departure of Timothy Dalton) to play the suave, danger-loving Agent 007. This James Bond is a bit more vulnerable and psychologically complex--and just a shade more politically correct--but he's still a formally attired playboy at heart, with a lovely Russian beauty (Izabella Scorupco) as his sexy ally against a cadre of renegade Russians bent on--what else?--global domination. All in all, this action-packed Bond adventure provided a much-needed boost the long-running movie series, revitalizing the 007 franchise for the turn of the millennium. --<i! >Jeff Shannon

<b>Live and Let Die</b>: Roger Moore was introduced as James Bond in this 1973 action movie featuring secret agent 007. This film marks a deviation from the more character-driven stories of the Connery years, a deliberate shift to plastic action (multiple chases, bravura stunts) that made the franchise more of a comic book or machine. If that's not depressing enough, there's even a good British director on board, Guy Hamilton (Force 10 from Navarone). The story finds Bond taking on an international drug dealer (Yaphet Kotto), and while that may be superficially relevant, it isn't exactly the same as fighting supervillains on the order of Goldfinger. --Tom Keogh</p> <img border="0" align=right src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/james-bond/3/foryoureyesonly1_sm.jpg"> <b>For Your Eyes Only</b>: After a ship sunk off the coast of Albania, the world's superpowers begin a feverish search for its valuable lost cargo: the powerful ATAC system, which will give its bearer unlimited control over Polaris nuclear submarines. As Bond joins the search, he suspects the suave Kristatos (Julian Glover) of seizing the device. The competition between nations grows more deadly by the moment, but Bond finds an ally in the beautiful Melina Havelock (Caroline Bouquet), who blames Kristatos for the death of her parents. The non-stop action includes automobile chases, thrilling underwater battles, and even a breathtaking tour over razor-sharp coral reefs. But all of this is merely a prelude to 007's cliffhanging assault of a magnificent mountaintop fortress. -- Robert Lynch

<b>From Russia with Love</b>: Directed with consummate skill by Terence Young, the second James Bond spy thriller is considered by many fans to be the best of them all. Certainly Sean Connery was never better as the dashing Agent 007, whose latest mission takes him to Istanbul to retrieve a top-secret Russian decoding machine. His efforts are thwarted when he gets romantically distracted by a sexy Russian double agent (Daniela Bianchi), and is tracked by a lovely assassin (Lotte Lenya) with switchblade shoes, and by a crazed killer (Robert Shaw), who clashes with Bond during the film's dazzling climax aboard the Orient Express. From Russia with Love is classic James Bond, before the gadgets, pyrotechnics, and Roger Moore steered the movies away from the more realistic tone of the books by Ian Fleming. --Jeff Shannon</p> <img border="0" align=left src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/james-bond/3/majestysecretservice2_sm.jpg"> <b>On Her Majesty's Secret Service</b>: Australian model George Lazenby took up the mantle of the world's most suave secret agent when Sean Connery retired as James Bond (although Connery returned in Diamonds Are Forever before leaving the role to Roger Moore). In On Her Majesty's Secret Service, 007 leaves the Service to privately pursue his SPECTRE nemesis Blofeld (played this time by Telly Savalas), whose latest master plan involves a threat to the world's crops by agricultural sterilization. Lazenby hasn't the intensity of Connery but he has fun with his quips and even lampoons the Bond image in a playful pre-credits sequence. Former editor Peter Hunt makes a strong directorial debut, deftly handling the elaborate action sequences with a kinetic finesse. --Sean Axmaker</p> <img border="0" align=right src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/james-bond/4/doctor-no1_sm.jpg"> <b>Dr. No</b>: Released in 1962, this first James Bond movie remains one of the best, and serves as an entertaining reminder that the Bond series began (in keeping with Ian Fleming's novels) with a surprising lack of gadgetry and big-budget fireworks. In his first adventure James Bond is called to Jamaica where a colleague and secretary have been mysteriously killed. With an American CIA agent (Jack Lord, pre-Hawaii Five-O), they discover that the nefarious Dr. No (Joseph Wiseman) is scheming to blackmail the U.S. government with a device capable of deflecting and destroying U.S. rockets launched from Cape Canaveral. Of course, Bond takes time off from his exploits to enjoy the company of a few gorgeous women, including the bikini-clad Ursula Andress. This is Bond at his purest, kicking off a series of movies that shows no sign of slowing down. --Jeff Shannon

<b>You Only Live Twice</b>: The film boasts the best of the Bond title songs (this one sung on a dreamy track by Nancy Sinatra), but the movie itself is one of the weaker ones of the Sean Connery phase of the 007 franchise. The story concerns an effort by the evil organization SPECTRE to start a world war, but the not-so-super villain behind the plot is the awfully civilized Donald Pleasence. The thin script is by Roald Dahl (shouldn't we have expected a better Bond nemesis from the creator of mad genius Willy Wonka?), and direction is by British veteran Lewis Gilbert (Alfie). But the movie can't hold a candle to Dr. No, From Russia with Love, or Goldfinger. --Tom Keogh</p> <img border="0" align=left src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/james-bond/4/octupussy2_sm.jpg"> <b>Octopussy</b>: Roger Moore was nearing the end of his reign as James Bond when he made Octopussy, and he looks a little worn out. But the movie itself infuses some new blood into the old franchise, with a frisky pace and a pair of sturdy villains. Maud Adams--who'd also been in the Bond outing The Man with the Golden Gun--plays the improbably named Octopussy, while old smoothie Louis Jourdan is her crafty partner in crime. Two Bond films were actually released in 1983 within a few months of each other, as Octopussy was followed by Sean Connery's comeback in Never Say Never Again. The success of both pictures proved that there was still plenty of mileage left in the old license to kill, though Moore had one more workout--A View to a Kill--before hanging it up. And that title? The franchise had already used up the titles to Ian Fleming's novels, so Octopussy was taken from a lesser-known Fleming short story. -- Robert Horton

<b>Tomorrow Never Dies</b>: Pierce Brosnan returns for his second stint as James Bond (after GoldenEye), and he's doing it in high style with an invigorating cast of costars. It's only appropriate that a Bond film from 1997 would find Agent 007 pitted against a media mogul (Jonathan Pryce) who's going to start a global war (beginning with stolen nuclear missiles aimed at China) to create attention-grabbing headlines for his latest multimedia news channel. It's the information age run amok, and Bond must team up with a lovely and lethal agent from the Chinese External Security Force (played by Honk Kong action star Michelle Yeoh) to foil the madman's plot of global domination. Luckily for Bond, the villain's wife (Teri Hatcher) is one of his former lovers and 007 finds ample opportunity to exploit the connection. Armed with the usual array of gadgets (including a remote-controlled BMW), Brosnan settles into his role with acceptable flair, and the dynamic Yeoh provides a perfect balance to the sexism that once threatened to turn Bond into a politically incorrect anachronism. He's still Bond, to be sure, but he's saving the world with a bit more sophisticated finesse. --Jeff Shannon</p> <img border="0" align=right src="http://images.amazon.com/images/G/01/dvd/james-bond/4/moonraker2_sm.jpg"> <b>Moonraker</b>: This was the first James Bond adventure produced after the success of Star Wars, so it jumped on the sci-fi bandwagon by combining the suave appeal of Agent 007 (once again played by Roger Moore) with enough high-tech hardware and special effects to make Luke Skywalker want to join Her Majesty's Secret Service. This time Bond is up against a criminal industrialist named Drax (Michel Lonsdale) who wants to control the world from his orbiting space station. Bond thwarts this maniacal Neo-Hitler's scheme with the help of a beautiful, sleek-figured scientist (played by Lois Chiles with all the vitality of a department-store mannequin). Despite Moore's passive performance (which Pauline Kael described as "like an office manager who is turning into dead wood but hanging on to collect his pension"), Moonraker had no problem attracting an appreciative audience, and there are even a few renegade Bond-philes who consider it one of their favorites. --Sean Axmaker</p>

5 out of 5 stars James Bond DVD set.......2007-06-08

Though i don't notice extreme improved visual quality (cleaner, clearer, or brighter), the results are great. I would recommend it even if you have, like i did, a few purchased individually, because these are packaged in slim cases with a 2nd DVD for bonus features. The only NEGATIVE part is that they are NOT put in order of production, which doesn't make sense, but it is still worth buying, especially for the price.

For the Hollywood remake rule, which dictates that an update of an older film be inferior to the original in almost every aspect, <I>The Thomas Crown Affair</I> stands as a glorious exception. The original 1968 film, starring a dapper Steve McQueen and a radiant Faye Dunaway, was a diverting pop confection of mod clothes and nifty break-ins, but not much more. John McTiernan's new version, though, cranks up the entertainment factor to mach speed, turning what was a languid flick into a high-adrenaline caper romance. Thomas Crown (Pierce Brosnan) is now a man of industry who likes to indulge in a little high-priced art theft on the side; Catherine Banning (Rene Russo) is the insurance investigator determined to get on his tail in more ways than one. If you're thinking cat-and-mouse game, think again--it's more like cat vs. smarter cat, as both the thief and the investigator try to outwit each other and <I>nothing</I> is off-limits, especially after they start a highly charged love affair that's a heated mix of business and pleasure.

What makes this <I>Thomas Crown</I> more enjoyable than its predecesor is McTiernan's attention to detail in both the set action pieces (no surprise from the man who helmed <I>Die Hard</I> with precision accuracy) and the developing romance, the witty and intelligent script by Leslie Dixon (she wrote the love scenes) and Kurt Wimmer (he wrote the action scenes), and, most of all, its two stunning leads (both over 40 to boot), combustible both in and out of bed. Brosnan, usually held prisoner in the James Bond straitjacket, lets loose with both a relaxed sensuality and a comic spirit he's rarely expressed before. The film, however, pretty much belongs to Russo, who doesn't just steal the spotlight, but bends it to her will. Beautiful, stylish, smart, self-possessed, incredibly sexy, she's practically a walking icon; it's no wonder Crown falls for her hook, line, and sinker. With Denis Leary as a police detective smitten with Russo, and Faye Dunaway in a throwaway but wholly enjoyable cameo as Brosnan's therapist. <I>--Mark Englehart</I>

This movie is OK, but I prefer the original version with Steve McQueen. This remake is too Hollywood for me, with too many unbelievable stunts. The original was better.

4 out of 5 stars He got his Kicks .......2007-02-07

Despite my misgivings I actually enjoyed this movie. I found it to be very entertaining. Pierce Brosnan is rich, affluent and board. He steals art treasures for kicks. Pierce Brosnan and Rene Russo make an acceptable and reluctant love duo. Denis Leary as the detective trying to nab Brosnan actually steals this film with his dedicated yet easy going style. As remakes go this is one of the better ones as of late. This film was made as one of Brosnan's non-Bond films during his tenure as 007. I still prefer the original.

5 out of 5 stars Find out what a billionaire does in his spare time.......2006-12-22

+++++

This movie is a remake (actually not an exact remake) of the 1968 movie "The Thomas Crown Affair" starring the legendary Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway (who has a small role in this remake).

In this movie a bored billionaire named Thomas "Tommy" Crown (Pierce Brosnan who also co-produced) masterminds an art theft of a 100 million dollar Monet painting. Unlike in the original movie (that was a bank heist), Crown actually participates in the theft.

Enter insurance investigator Catherine Banning (Rene Russo) with police detective Michael McCann (Denis Leary). Banning identifies Crown as the mastermind behind this crime. She's out to get him but a problem ensues along the way: she falls for Crown and Crown falls for her. Their scenes together are sizzling and explosive.

Unlike the 1968 original, there is tension created as the viewer wonders if Crown will actually get caught. As well, the sexual tension between Crown and the insurance investigator is heightened in this movie.

The acting is terrific by Brosnan, Russo, and Leary. I have to give special kudos to Russo as the smart and very sexy insurance investigator Catherine Banning. The background music is interesting and adds to each scene. There is a clever ending that I found unforgettable and fun to watch. I felt the entire movie was slick and ingeniously done.

Finally, the DVD (the one released in 2000) is perfect in visual and audio quality. It has the movie on both sides of the disc. Extras consist of the 1968 and 1999 theatrical trailers as well as a director audio commentary.

In conclusion, watch this movie for yourself to discover what a billionaire does in his spare time!!

3 out of 5 stars Watchable caper flick.......2006-12-05

This is a movie that moves in fits and starts. Parts of it are a lot of fun, parts of it stumble.

Most of the stumbling is done when Rene Russo is the focus of the movie. Admittedly, the script verges on the downright ridiculous, and she's placed in scenes that were simply hopeless. (Some of the dialogue is so bad that this movie might almost have made its way into an MST3K episode.) Still, a better actress might have made them...less hopeless. I found myself groaning and rolling my eyes at her hamming. And to hot things up, she's reduced to shimmying sans underwear in a see-through gown, and then providing plenty of topless footage. It doesn't work. The sudden, extended nudity seems kind of jarring, as if I just switched over to Cinemax without realizing it. There are also scenes where Russo switches to the cartoonish character known as The Bitch, and she's not believable then, either.

Brosnan is also a touch ridiculous from time to time, but mostly he plays his usual suave, handsome character. If you like that, you'll like him here.

Dennis Leary surprises with a low-key performance. If I would have expected anyone to deliver a true hambone performance, it would have been him.

There are lots of shots of exotic locales, like a hilltop cabana on a tropical island, or a glider flying over a forest alive with autumn colors, that are nice eye candy. We had just gotten our first widescreen TV and it was pretty nice to watch this movie show off the TV.

I found myself reaching for the remote a few times during this movie, telling myself, "OK, I've seen about enough of this." But I must admit, it held my attention, just barely, to the end.

5 out of 5 stars Excdellent!.......2006-12-02

I absolutely LOVE this movie. I am on my way to purchase my very own DVD today. I have been borrowing my sisters and decided I need my very own copy. Just like another reviewer said this movie requires intelect so if you do not have that don't bother. This movie is sexy, it has suspense, the music is nice and the characters make this movie seem very real. My sister and my friend use to rave about this movie years ago and I wander what the hype was about then finally years later I decided to watch it and became hooked! I can watch this everyday! LOL

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A very entertaining movie!.......2007-06-18

Wow! Has it really been 14 years since this movie came out? I remember when I was younger, this was one of my favorite movies. Even today, this movie is still entertaining and I'm not bored with it thusfar.

So what's this movie about? The movie starts out when Daniel Hibbard (played by Robin Williams) decides to throw a big birthday party for his son. His son and two other kids warn him that their mother, Daniel's wife, Miranda, will be upset if she finds out. Daniel throws the party anyway because he didn't expect her to be home for another few hours. Miranda comes home early and finds her house destroyed. Daniel and Miranda have a nasty fight which ultimately leads to a divorce. During the divorce hearing, Daniel gets delivered a blow when the judge gives sole custody of the kids to Miranda with occasional visits given to Daniel. The rest of the movie has Daniel doing whatever it takes to get more time with his kids, including dressing up as a woman and becoming Miranda's maid/babysitter.

So what's to like about this movie? First of all, the storyline is cute. Yes, there's quite a few movies that deal with divorce and overcoming it but movie comes with a twist. Second, although this movie is meant to be a comedy, there's a ton of emotion involved also. Throughout the entire movie, you're rooting for Daniel to get over his many obstacles so that he can get partial custody of the kids. Third, as mentioned above, there are lot of funny scenes. Robin Williams is hilarious and he was made for this role.

And what's not to like? Not much. Don't go into this movie expecting it be Oscar-worthy. It's just a funny, entertaining movie that will pass a couple of hours on a lazy Sunday.

If you're looking for a good movie to watch with your kids or if you want a no frills, comedy to watch with a couple of friends, this movie is a great choice!

5 out of 5 stars Mrs. Doubtfire.......2007-06-10

This movie is about a man, an immature, irresponsible kind of guy who loves his kids. How can you help but to love a dad who would do anything to be with his children, including dressing up as a woman in order to be their caregiver? It is refreshing to see a movie that shows a father's devotion and love in such a positive light. Robin Williams is a wonderful versatile actor and always gives a fantastic performance no matter what type of role he is playing. And Sally Field is adorable as usual. The family interaction is delightful throughout. This movie is funny, poignant, and entertaining for children and adults alike, a definite family movie sure to be enjoyed by all.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Movies EVER.......2007-04-07

This is one of Robert Williams best Movies ever because it has it all, Comedy, Drama, and it gets you all teary and mushy inside while making you laugh your head off. Deffinetely recommend to Robert William fans. Trust me you wont regret it. I sure didn't.

In his 19th screen outing, Ian Fleming's superspy is once again caught in the crosshairs of a self-created dilemma: as the longest-running feature-film franchise, James Bond is an annuity his producers want to protect, yet the series' consciously formulaic approach frustrates any real element of surprise beyond the rote application of plot twists or jump cuts to shake up the audience. This time out, credit 007's caretakers for making some visible attempts to invest their principal characters with darker motives--and blame them for squandering <I>The World Is Not Enough</I>'s initial promise by the final reel.

By now, Bond pictures are as elegantly formal as a Bach chorale, and this one opens on an unusually powerful note. A stunning pre-title sequence reaches beyond mere pyrotechnics to introduce key plot elements as the action leaps from Bilbao to London. Bond 5.0, Pierce Brosnan, undercuts his usually suave persona with a darker, more brutal edge largely absent since Sean Connery departed. The story's focus on post-Soviet geopolitics likewise starts off on a savvy note, before being overtaken by increasingly Byzantine plot twists, hidden motives, and reversals of loyalty superheated by relentless (if intermittently perfunctory) action sequences.

Indeed, the procession of perils plays like a greatest hits medley, save for a nifty sequence involving airborne buzz saws that's as enjoyable as it is preposterous. Bond's grimmer demeanor, while preferable to the smirk that eventually swallowed Roger Moore whole, proves wearying, unrelieved by any true wit. The underlying psychoses that propel Renard and Elektra eventually unravel into unconvincing melodrama, while Bond is supplied with a secondary love object, Denise Richards, who's even more improbable as a nuclear physicist. Ultimately, this <I>World</I> is not enough despite its better intentions. <I>--Sam Sutherland</I>

4 out of 5 stars One of Brosnan's better Bond films.......2006-11-26

Pierce Brosnan is back and has to save the world from a mad man once again. Robert Carlyle is really good as that mad man and is one of the best Bond villians in my book. You also have Sophie Marceau and Denise Richards as two sexy Bond girls. Most Bond fans just mostly picked on the film due to Denise Richards acting abilities. Which are limited. I never had much of a problem with her, I guess I was too busy looking at her and not watching her acting abilities as closely as other Bond fans lol.

I do think Brosnan's Bond films did try too hard in casting Bond women though. I mean most of them were too recognizeabke and just casted on looks basically. I think Goldeneye had the best casting though of any of his films. I mean I don't even know what else that Bond girl was in after Goldeneye or before it for that matter and she could act too. I do like the casting of Sophie Marceau here more than the Denise Richards casting though. Not only because she's a better actor but because she doesn't stick out like a sore thumb. I mean I just know her from a bad David Spade film.

Anyway I think The World is Not Enough is one of Brosnan's better outings as Bond. It's surely better than Tomorrow Never Dies. Plus I think Robert Carlyle is as memorable as a Bond villian as Sean Bean in GoldenEye. I don't know why people talk about the villian in Die Another Day like he was the best of the Brosnan films, he did nothing for me really. Brosnan doesn't shine here as much as he does in GoldenEye but I do find his line at the end both crude and funny and he delivers it well. Denise Richards' name is Christmas and he says somthing like "Christmas doesn't come once a year"....lol.

1 out of 5 stars Most Embarrassing Bond Movie Ever.......2006-11-18

This is simply the worst Bond movie ever, also included, the worst Bond Girl ever - that being Denise Richards. Denise was not glamorous or smart as past Bond girls, essentially if she were left out of the story no one would have noticed. She looked like some chick Bond picked up from the mall, denim jacket included, who just provided unnecessary commentary. The story was disjointed and hopes that it would go anywhere and went no where. M is kidnapped, yeah, that had nothing nor any relevance to the story. This movie seemed rushed to produce and you can tell.

3 out of 5 stars 3.5, it was the best of Bond it was the worst of Bond.......2006-11-14

Bond films seem very critic proof since they're not meant to move you to tears and they're not meant to be laugh riots or creep into your skin. They're action movies pure and simple and arguably no one does it better. But seeing as how we're already on Bond 19 and while it's not that the series has completely run out of ideas, there is a sameness and familiarity to it all that prevents it from being the best Bond it can be. Doesn't mean that the filmmakers don't try really hard though.

After the killing of oil tycoon Robert King, 007 James Bond is hired to protect his daughter, beautiful Elektra. The main villain orchestrating everything is Renard, a man who was shot in the head and affecting his brain so that he can't actually feel pain, although the bullet will eventually kill him. Bond has to team with nuclear physicist Christmas Jones (Bond girls have had pretty strange names but this is just stupid) in order to avert a world-threatening plan (natch).

First, the casting: Sophie Marceau personally is my choice for the hottest Bond girl but acting-wise it's very extreme from one end to the next without any in-betweens. And Denise Richards is arguably the biggest miscast I've seen in a film. As for Pierce Brosnan, well this is #3 for him so he's still as suave and Bond-esque with the action hero coming into play whenever he needs to. As for the villain, Robert Carlyle is one of those Bond baddies where the premise is there but he's just not as compelling, in fact he seems kind of wimpy.

The Bond series lately has been going for that bigger is badder approach but there's a couple of goodies: the opening with a big boat chase is one of my favorite openers in the series but then we have a kind of meh ski escape as well as Bond versus a helicopter with sawblades attached which is as exciting as it is preposterous. But that's what's expected with any Bond film so I don't even mind anymore but there's almost a too over-the-topness to it as if the films tried to eclipse Bond wannabe films of late.

Is it the best Bond? No. The best Brosnan film? No. But it's a solid if very faulty Bond. I'd recommend it anyway though.

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie!.......2006-05-31

This is a pretty exciting movie. I have to say Pierce Bronsan makes the best James Bond, even better than Sean Connery in older James Bond movies. Some of the top action scenes include the Boat Chase, James Bond and Electra King(a very beautiful woman) getting chased while skiing and the helicopter scene. The basic story is that James Bond is sent to protect an oil heiress, whom unknown forces are trying to kill.

Bond thinks it is because they don't want competition from her Oil pipeline. However, the story takes a surprise twist that most won't see coming. For that reason I give this movie 5 stars; for this unusual twist that is not there in other Bond movies.

5 out of 5 stars "M" is kidnapped!.......2006-05-10

This is the 19th "Official" James Bond film and the third for Pierce Brosnan. Returning: Judi Dench as "M", Samantha Bond as "Miss Moneypenny", Desmond Llewellyn as "Q", Colin Salmon as "Charles Robinson", Michael Kitchen as "Tanner" and Robbie Coltrane returns as "Valentin Zukovsky". Michael G. Wilson plays a man in the casino.
At the MI6 Headquarters in London, England, an old friend of "M" (Judi Dench), Robert King (David Calder) who she used to study law with, is building a new pipeline and believes terrorists may be trying to destroy it. When Mr. King leaves, Bond sits down to have a cordial drink with "M". After the ice in his drink begins to fizz, Bond suddenly gets the notion to run to the safe to stop Mr. King. As King gets near the billetes of money, the special pin on King's lapel sets off a bomb in the bulk of money. It kills Robert King instantly.
Later at the funeral, Bond is briefed about Robert King's daughter, Elektra (Sophie Marceau). When the MI6 returns to the Headquarters in Scotland, Bond is briefed on his next mission. "M" had sent an agent to kill Renard (Robert Carlyle) who is a terrorist. The agent shot him in the head, but Renard still lives with the bullet still inside. The bullet is moving and killing his senses. He feels no pain. Eventually the bullet will kill him. Renard gets stronger everyday and Bond must find him. Bond will have some help by Christmas Jones (Denise Richards), but the plot thickens when Bond realizes Elektra isn't as innocent as everyone thinks and "M" is kidnapped and held hostage.
After 36 years of playing "Q" (1963-1999), Desmond Llewelyn makes his exit after introducing "R" (John Cleese), his new assistant.
Desmond Llewelyn passed away December 19, 1999, just weeks after the film's premiere.
This VHS also includes the music video of "The World Is Not Enough" before the film begins and a special montage tribute to Desmond Llewelyn.

The first of 1997's volcano disaster movies (the second being <I>Volcano</I>) was arguably the better of the two, but both of them made for passable entertainment with some spectacular special effects to serve as icing on the stale cake. After all, <I>Dante's Peak</I> doesn't pretend to be anything more than an updated variation on a whole catalog of disaster movie clichés. Despite all that, it's reasonably enjoyable. It's an added bonus that the script is just smart enough to allow Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton to play their roles with straight faces, never condescending to the audience of the formulaic story. He's a volcano expert from the U.S. Geological Survey, and she's the mayor of a cozy Washington State town perched beneath a volcano that's about to blow. Telltale signs are everywhere, so evacuation must be carried out immediately. Of course, not everybody's eager to leave, and even some of Brosnan's colleagues think his alarm is premature. This sets the stage for massive ash clouds, rivers of raging mud and molten rock, flattened forests, and death-defying escapes by Brosnan, Hamilton, and some (but not all) of her family, friends, and townsfolk. So what if it's all pretty flaky... and can a four-wheel-drive vehicle travel over fire and molten lava without bursting its tires? Don't ask too many questions, and you'll find <I>Dante's Peak</I> to be (if you'll pardon the pun) a total blast. The Collector's Edition DVD includes a documentary about volcanoes, <I>Getting Close to the Show</I>, in addition to behind-the-scenes footage, exclusive coverage of the creation of special effects, and audio commentary with director Roger Donaldson. <I>--Jeff Shannon</I>

3 out of 5 stars A Decent Volcano Movie........2007-06-14

An interesting story with its moments. The build up to the eruption was great! All the little momments like the too hot hot springs! Though once the lava starts to roll, the script gets a bit unrealistic. I guess it builds suspense. All in all, a good volcano flick.

3 out of 5 stars Volcanic delight.......2007-05-08

I've always been fascinated by volcanos, and have always like Pierce Brosnan doing his thing on screen also. Linda Hamilton is pretty good, though a little lost at times. The others, I hate to say, were just filler. They were never allowed to really fly, or even be more than scenery. Effects are solid, but overdone in some spots. The lead up to the actual blast is the best half. It's an ok film.

5 out of 5 stars Brosnan's Peak.......2007-05-04

This is the most absorbing film I've ever seen! You have a whole town trying to evacuate and all of them are thinking about Number 1. This is also one of Brosnan's best films - and you don't think about Bond when you're watching it. Tremendous.

5 out of 5 stars Dante's Peak.......2007-01-12

This is a wonderful movie. Unfortunately it came out at a bad time and never got the recognition it should have. It had adventure, suspense, and a lot of action, along with an offbeat love story. It's a great movie for all.

5 out of 5 stars Catastrophe-Action Done Right; A Whopping Great Thrill Ride With Feeling.......2007-01-11

"Dante's Peak" is one of the disaster movies that really brings the genre to a super peak, with a realistic and thrilling earth-shaking (in this case literally) catastrophe, high octane action, glorious cinematography capturing great natural beauty, and high-quality characters and relationships. It is, of course, about a volcano, one of the most powerful forces in nature, and it successfully captures the grandeur and terror of such an event. I've always found volcanoes fascinating - they're terrifically destructive, and of course tragic for the havoc they wreak, both when they're near human habitation and when they're in the 'isolated' wilderness where the other creatures are the sole recipients of their explosive force. And yet they're undeniably beautiful, like a sunset or a howling snowstorm, and they're in fact an essential part of the inner workings of the earth. Also, although there is often a lot of death associated with volcanoes as acre after acre gets burnt up or covered with ash, they're also, paradoxically, major bringers of life. Even extremely barren, infertile lands with usually burst forth with new life within a few years of a volcano, because they bring forth such rich new nutrients in their lava.

"Dante's Peak" is smart by not having the disaster hit five minutes after the opening credits have finished rolling; there have been some movies of this nature over the years that have made just that mistake. This one though is perfectly paced throughout. There is plently of tight build-up and a couple of tragic harbingers of the bigger calamity to come. The action in the latter parts of the movie is explosive and exhilirating, among the best. It's interesting that "Dante's Peak" has managed to position itself as one of the greatest action movies without any real bad guys. There are some unlikable characters - short-sighted, arrogant, condescending - but that's all. They're jerks, but they're not characters who are going to go out and kill somebody. So in this tremendous action movie there's no one shooting at each other, no swordplay, no high-impact kick battles. Don't get me wrong - I love the kind of movies represented by "Lethal Weapon", "Timebomb", "True Lies", "Out Of Time", all that; and I generally even more love the more fantastical, really grand movies like "Superman Returns", "Star Wars", "Lord Of The Rings", "Spider-Man", all that stuff. But it's neat that a movie missing so many of the great staples of action fare has also brought itself up into the cream of the crop.

The visuals of "Dante's Peak" are awesome. The volcanic effects are extremely realistic, and just the natural splendor is great. As mentioned, the cinematography is incredible, although there is admittedly one wonderful shot that was promising to be truly spectacular but gets hampered a bit by the camera being in the wrong angle to capture it all. A very minor quibble. It would also be an extremely minor quibble if one was to spend too much time focusing on the improbably high number of razor-thin escapes by some of the characters. Movie makers Are allowed some artistic licences even in realistic scenarios after all, and besides, in a case where two outcomes are possible but one quite a bit more likely, you don't have to go with the most likely one Every time. You shouldn't also go with the most unlikely every time either or it loses its believability and tension, and "Dante's Peak" doesn't do that. It stays on just the right tip of the balancing scale.

Excellent stuff; for more disaster-oriented greats I also recommend "Deep Impact" and "Titanic".

It's enlightening to view Tim Burton's Mars Attacks! as his twisted satire of the blockbuster film Independence Day, which was released earlier the same year, although the movies were in production simultaneously. Burton's eye-popping, schlock tribute to 1950s UFO movies actually plays better on video than it did in theaters. The idea of invading aliens ray gunning the big-name movie stars in the cast is a cleverly subversive one, and the bulb-headed, funny-sounding animated Martians are pretty nifty, but it all seemed to be spread thin on the big screen. On video, however, the movie's kooky humor seems a bit more concentrated. The Earth actors (most of whom get zapped or kidnapped for alien science experiments) include Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Sarah Jessica Parker, Rod Steiger, Michael J. Fox, Lukas Haas, Jim Brown, Tom Jones, and Pam Grier. The digital video disc features an isolated track for Danny Elfman's score, as well as a few other clever and nasty little Martian surprises. --Jim Emerson

4 out of 5 stars A refreshing film!!.......2007-06-15

A refreshing and quite funny film. I saw this film years ago on TV (or on the cinema)and have since tried to obtain a DVD of this classic film. Fortunately amazon has it. It's quite "different" (quirky), but quite entertaining. You won't be dissappointed.

4 out of 5 stars Hooray for Tom Jones!.......2007-05-08

This movie has an all star cast and great visuals. There are a lot of sight gags, and the humor is timeless.

4 out of 5 stars Very funny classic retro movie!.......2007-03-28

I've always loved this movie, the special effects are incredible and the cast surprised me (I didn't know Jack Black was in this movie until recently). I always liked the way they made the movie very retro looking, since it was based on trading cards from 1960's. If you're into wacky sci-fi comedies, I HIGHLY recommend Mars Attacks! It's a shame there are no extras on this DVD, but the movie is worth getting, especially at under $10.

5 out of 5 stars THIS MOVIE IS TOPPS.......2007-02-02

Yes, I bought the TOPPS "MARS ATTACKS" trading cards when they first came out...and I still have them! So when this movie came out I ran to the theater to see it, expecting to be disappointed. Not so. I found Tim Burton's film to be both funny & scary, true to the spirit of the original cards & a great send off of 1950's sci-fi flicks. I consider MARS ATTACKS a classic of the genre. This is a great treat for sci-fi fans!...and I'm partial to Tim Burton's "ED WOOD" as well. Enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars All star cast keeps the laughs going.......2007-01-13

Mars is a classic comedy that I hadn't see in a long time that doesn't have the best script, but it's witty and funny in spots. The special effects are typical of that time and a little cheesy, but it's still an enjoyable movie.

With stylish director Roger Spottiswode (Under Fire) at the helm, this James Bond thriller is one of the sleekest ever. It doesn't feel weighed down by its mammoth special effects, like most other recent installments. It's consistently graceful and light on its feet, especially when high-kicking Hong Kong martial-arts star Michelle Yeoh leaps into action as Bond's Chinese counterpart. And a sequence depicting a high-altitude parachute jump ranks with the coolest set pieces of the entire series. There's even an attempt in this outing to modernize the stiff-jointed Cold War assumptions of the secret-agent genre, by making the bad guy (played with greedy relish by Jonathan Pryce) an international media mogul, a megalomaniacal blend of Rupert Murdoch and Ted Turner. As a ploy to boost the ratings of his cable-news hookup, Pryce's Jeremy Carver employs a globe-spanning satellite system to nudge the armed forces of China and Great Britain into a confrontation--quoting William Randolph Hearst (and Charles Foster Kane) along the way: "You supply the pictures, I'll supply the war." Bond number six, Pierce Brosnan, seems to be settling into a no-nonsense interpretation of 007 as "a professional doing a job," a craftsman who seems to be exhilarated by his own competence. Michelle Yeoh's best Hong Kong efforts include Yes, Madam, Heroic Trio, and Supercop, in which she costarred with Jackie Chan--and m
